- 1:43SPEAKER_00: I'm not gonna lie, I'm quite sweaty.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: I'm not a man who deals with high temperatures, by which I mean by which I mean temperatures of over 16 degrees.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: I'm very much the same if but like it's so hot today.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: It's a tropical, it's a tropical heat, a British tropic somewhere.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: The British heat is so humid.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: I hate it.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: It's a it's a it's a dry heat, just like a whit.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Um sorry.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: One thing Okay, calm down.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: Please try and be professional.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: Sorry, I'm sorry.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm sweating as well.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: The heat has got to my head.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: Um one thing was that we we were supposed to record yesterday and oh yeah.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: You uh because we because we planned it so far in advance, um, you ended up booking in a um you ended up booking a a uh tuxedo fit a suit for your wedding.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Which is happening in a month, and I'm gonna I'm not gonna lie.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: So excited.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: I don't regret my priorities.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: But it might it might in my defense, I don't know if you have this with Google Calendar.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Sorry, I don't know if your listeners relate to like Google Calendar material, but sometimes it switches your time zone from UK to US.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah so I had it in my thing, but like five hours later.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: So I was like, sure, I'm gonna record a podcast at at midnight.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: That is one of the least unusual things I've done in comedy.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: It makes perfect sense to me.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: Um, so I'm very sorry about that, but I didn't.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: No, it's totally fair.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: I just had to bring out because it was funny.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Oh, you had to, but I gave you like complete permission to just like you know, yeah, you also gave me permission for like a for like a minute to just like insult me, uh say what you like, be talk about my physical appearance, uh get homophobic if you want.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: I'll give you like a minute's pass where you can just use any sort of.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: I would never.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Alright.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Okay, that was a test and you have passed your notes.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Well done.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna insult you, it's very funny.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: And you also you're it's also a priority, I feel like, as well.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: Well to go to get your wedding suit is a priority.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: I suppose, yes.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: Did you get it sorted?
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Um, they didn't have enough sheer fabric for what I wanted.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: So what are you getting done?
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: No, I'm getting a nor I'm getting like a normal thing, but then I keep toying with the idea of wearing like a sheer top underneath.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: Like a but like everything else traditional suit, and then just just like just like something to like scare scare my partner's grandmother, just a little bit.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: It's my day and I can do what I like.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, there you go, girl.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: It's it's both of my nipples just out there in the open.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: The last time I saw you was at your show where you were wearing a sheer top as well.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: I was you got it, you got a taste, you got a little test event.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it could be something along the way.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: Maybe you should just wear that.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: Just wear that outfit.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: Maybe.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: But then I but I don't know, it's my wedding, so maybe I should have some kind of train or like a veil.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: Do you does your partner know what you're gonna wear?
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: Uh like do you know do you each know what you're gonna plan out to wear?
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: No, I have made him aware of of of of this idea.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: Because some because he's gonna wear a kilt and he was toying with the idea of not wearing a kilt because he's Scottish.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: Um so he was toying with the idea of wearing a kilt, not wearing a kilt, because we we were gonna do like a big wedding, and then obviously we had to like scale it quite a bit back.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: So this in a way feels like our wedding, but also not our wedding because a lot of people won't be there.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: But I was like, no, you should wear a kilt, you're gonna regret it if you don't.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: And he was like, Maybe I'll get maybe I won't tell you what I'm gonna wear on the day.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: And I was like, I've been talking about wearing a sheer top for months now, so sure, don't tell me what you're wearing, I won't tell you what I'm wearing, and that's your risk that you're choosing to take.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: So I feel like you somehow you're gonna come out the more adventurous out of the two of the two of you.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: I think so too.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: But um, you've come on today to talk about the movie Um Spice World after many, many suggestions, all of which should be done.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: I had so many.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: I was like, showgirls, you were like, that's been done.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: I was like, oh, Starship Troops, I think somebody's taken that one as well.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: Burlesque, somebody's done that one as well.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, these are great choices, but I hate whoever picked them.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: You picked, yeah, I couldn't believe how many you managed to pick pick that had been done already.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Like I mean, I think I mean that must say something about my taste in cinema.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: Uh they're all I enjoyed all the ones you suggested.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, me too.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't have suggested them otherwise.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: But I mean but to be honest, I wouldn't the what we're talking about today, Spice World.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: I never I never would have uh guessed to think this because it was news to me that this actually wasn't an Oscar nominated film.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: I I thought I the this episode will essentially be me making the case that Victoria Beckham should have been nominated for Best Supporting Actress.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: Does she have more than like four lines in this movie?
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: But it's what she does with those four lines.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: She really makes them her own.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: And it like there's the there's a bit there's the bit in the hospital where she wakes up a child by referring to Jerry's breasts, and she get and she goes, and I'm Victoria Malcolm, out of nowhere, nobody else is screaming, but Victoria is.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: She she makes choices that really Meryl Streep could never.
- 7:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: So and Meryl Streep would never.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: Would never, no.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: One thing that did surprise me, maybe the opposite of how you feel.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: 34%.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: However, I thought it'd be way lower.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Now, see, again, I just I I wouldn't have said Spice World because it I would have thought it scored higher, like higher than that.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: I I I don't know why, but maybe Well, even the fan score is 45, which is you know, like Well, okay, is this a fair question?
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: Was Rotten Tomatoes out at like a a well-known site when this film came out?
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: I don't know if it even existed when this came out.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: So it could be like people unfairly retrospectively reviewing it and being like, yeah, by today's standards, this film is terrible.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: Oh, I think it holds up better today than it did back then.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, actually, it yeah, it is an allegory for capitalism.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: You are right.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: We'll explore that theme, I'm sure.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: Uh but it's yeah, 64 critics' reviews, but a hundred thousand plus from the audience.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: Okay, and still like quite a low score.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: It's still a low score.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: But it's also it was considered like at the time, it was considered one of the worst movies ever made, from what I remember.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: I mean I don't I wouldn't say that.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: No, and I think it it it had to be like quite a successful film because the spy skills was huge at the time.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: It was huge.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: I had it on VHS.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: Did you?
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: I I remember it coming out, I never saw it.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: Uh so my first time seeing it was yesterday day day before yesterday.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: Um but it was uh what how much did it make?
- 9:01SPEAKER_01: So it made twenty-nine million.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: Oh, no, it wasn't huge.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: Okay, it wasn't huge.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: It made twenty nine million on a twenty-five million budget.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: I thought it was huge, my mistake.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: They did the the budget for the spice bus was just unreal.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: It was actually a real bus.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: We think it was made up, but they genuinely and it caught and meatloaf.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: They had to use the bus everywhere.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: Uh it it had a lot of people in it as well.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: So many cameos, so many.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: And like some questionable ones, which we'll get to, but yeah.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: But you rewatch it and be like, oh god, they were in this?
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: Oh well, I had no idea.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: I don't know how I missed that before, but every everyone wanted to be in the film and and and they they all were.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: Anyone who wanted to be in it.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: Anyone who wanted to be in it was an idiot.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: So could you are you able to give a plot synopsis?
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: Because I don't think I can.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: Spiceworld is a tale of five plucky young girls uh who go on a journey to womanhood.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: Um they're the I'm gonna I was gonna try to make it sound super serious.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: Um basically it is about the Spice Girls, they play themselves, and and I would say playing themselves is actually in acting terms quite a stretch for them.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: Um and the plot is that they are gearing up to I I don't know why they've said this, but their first like proper live gig at the Royal Albert Hall, which I think I don't know if that's them saying up until that point, every gig they had done had been lip-synced.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: But I don't, I don't know.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: But they were like, oh, it's the first like big, proper live gig.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: And it's everything's leading up to this, and that you follow them doing like a big press tour around the world.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: Uh you go to Italy, you see like oiled naked men, some aliens turn up because like they're so famous that like their stardom has gone into the stratosphere.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: Uh I think it was Mel C says something to one of the aliens, which I think maybe if we analyze it a bit for could be it could be potentially racist.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: And then and then they have a huge falling out just before the gig.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: And it's like, will they will they turn up for the gig?
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: Will they do it?
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: Will it all go to plan?
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: And then along the way, there's like this other side story where like they have a friend that they're all that they're all friends with, and she's pregnant, and she turns up and she goes, like, yeah, I'm pregnant, it's hard, isn't it?
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: Oh, can the Spice Girls be my godmother?
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: That you'll probably have lots of free time to look after my baby, right?
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: And the plot twisters they they don't, they really don't.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: And then they leave.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: No, and they leave their friend, they leave their friend, they were like, Oh, we've been really bad friends to her.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: This is a really long synopsis.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: They leave their friend, they go, they go into like a really like queer bar, like a queer bar that's like proper queer for like early naughty, late 90s standards, and they just leave a pregnant woman, leave her there.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: She starts going into labor and they don't notice right away because they've got some choreography to finish, and then they go to her, go with her to the hospital, she has the baby, and then they have to race back in the spice bus uh to try and make it to the show on time.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: Great synopsis.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I just God, it brings a tear to the eye just thinking about the journey they went on.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: And again, as much as you describe there, I don't know if that's a plot.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: No, it's it's also much a plot as a series of things that happen.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: A series of things, yeah.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: And the thing that connects them all is that the spice girls are there in some capacity.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: Oh! There's also a whole thing about like the the the invasion of the press and somebody spying on them, yeah.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: And like turns sticks it, like is like literally like climbing into their toilets to try and like get scoops on them, and then when they can't, they just make scoops up.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and like and there's also a documentary being made about them.
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: There's also a documentary being made.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: Unofficial documentary that they haven't agreed to.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: Well they they I think somebody said, like, yeah, you can like film with the cameras, but like don't get too close to them, and they don't.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: And and but uh it there's just there's lots of like little stories that happen interweaving with each other, but never quite like concluding or tying together neatly.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: Oh, it there's also another one, I just remembered another one, where um the there's a movie producer trying to get a movie made about them.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: Alongside all of this, a movie producer is trying to get a movie about the spice girls made, but oh, it's actually happening within a movie about the spice girls, and then like the the the Marvel style closing credit scene it shows you like all of the girls like on set of the movie that they're about to record, but you've just watched it.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: Whoa! They're ahead of their time.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: Did Spice World foreshadowed the Marvel cinematic universe?
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: It came a decade before it.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: Who inspired who?
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: It's a strange, strange movie.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: It's like I don't know.
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: So apparently they came up with the idea themselves.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: Oh, I absolutely.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: They absolutely did.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: Because people people don't realise they did like I don't know if they wrote all of their own songs, but they did like work with the writers, so they were happy with all of the lyrics and stuff.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: So like they did enjoy like a lot of creative control, and there's like outside of the film a whole thing about how they left their first manager and went to a different place where they felt like they had more creative control.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: So they it doesn't surprise me at all that they came up with the idea for the film and were like, yeah, we want to do it.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: We all think we're actresses.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: And then Kim Ful Kim Fuller wrote it, who is Simon Fuller's uh who was their manager, his brother.
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: And who who then also went on to write the S Club 7 movie.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: Again, double trouble or seeing double or whatever it's called.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: Something like that.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: He's he's got a niche.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: Uh and fun fact about the Cowell family, they have another brother who's like a property developer and had his own show where he just like judged like people's houses or something.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: I don't remember what it was called.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: I I had no idea about that.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: And it's probably best that we don't yeah, it's probably best that we don't tell anybody what it was called.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: I'm also looking up, he also wrote from Justin to Kelly, which is uh Kelly Clarkson one.
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: Yep, yep.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: So that's his career.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: I I believe he was also working on a biopic of uh Chico from the X-Facts.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: Uh The Cheeky Girls were into hawks uh for a trilogy series, yeah.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: He wanted to write the Westlife one, but Louis wouldn't let him.
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: No, no, uh wow, what a what a skilled man he uh he could have been.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: Uh but but so for the rest of the okay, so there's the Spice Girls as themselves, and then there's also Richard E.
- 16:24SPEAKER_01: Grant as their manager.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: Uh we've got Alan Cumming as the documentary guy, we've got George Went as the film producer, uh uh Roger Roger Moore is this Roger Bloody Moore, and he's like a weird like cat-stroking Yeah.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: He's like the manager's boss, but he only talks in proverbs that make no sense.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: He says stuff like, Oh, if the duck's back is wet, then you know it's been swimming, or stuff like that.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: And and then and then the manager's like, yeah, okay, alright.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: How much are we paying Roger Moore for this?
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: And he filmed all of his scenes in one day.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: And knew nothing, apparently he knew nothing of the rest of what the script was.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: No, he didn't even he did probably didn't even know who the Spice Girls were.
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: Um, I read that Victoria asked him to do it.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: That's that's pretty fantastic.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: Victoria apparently she got his autograph and then asked him to do it.
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: Just it just Victoria Adams just casually like, what in those days what?
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: Faxing Roger Moore, probably, and just saying, please be in this film that I'm doing.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: It's like you can film it all, you don't even have to leave your house, just just sit with your cat.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: We'll string together whatever you say.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yep.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: But okay, which furthers, I think, my my evidence required for Victoria Beckham getting a supporting actress nomination.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: She she had quite the hand in getting this movie to happen.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: She did, yeah.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: Uh at least the producer credit.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: Um it's what she deserves.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: I'm trying to look her up.
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: Okay, so yeah, you said Meatloaf as well.
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Meat Loaf was the bus driver.
- 18:18SPEAKER_01: Bus driver who who does nothing except for like just sit there for most of the time and then he he like makes us uh a nod to one of his songs at the end.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: Which would have been lost on any of the kids watching that film because they would not know who he is.
- 18:33SPEAKER_01: Uh I also read that his role was supposed to be, uh oh, where was it?
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: It said it somewhere.
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: It's really Frank Bruno was supposed to be that role.
- 18:44SPEAKER_01: And he left the movie after the security guard wouldn't let his son take a photo on set with the Spice Girls.
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: And so they replaced him with Meatloaf.
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: Who was the understudy for Frank?
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: Frank Guess.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: Am I thinking of the right person, Frank Bruno Box Boxer?
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: This movie has no this movie makes no sense.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: I I'm trying to remember if Frank Bruno, like Michael Jordan style, tried to carve out an acting career for himself.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: Not that I know of.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: He was like, This is my space channel.
- 19:22SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm trying to look at what he's been in.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: He has not been in a movie.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: Oh well.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: He really missed his chance then.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: It's like if I can't be in Spice World, then I'm not gonna be in anything.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that was gonna be his big break.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: It was that or nothing.
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: And then there's who else is in it?
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: There's uh Barry Humphreys is in it as the creepy like newspaper mogul.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: Uh uh, or Dame Edna Everidge is uh he's more commonly known.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: So I'm just looking at the name directly at the names.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: Who was um oh, their name was just in my head and now I've forgotten it.
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: But um Jennifer Saunders was in it.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: Uh uh Oh uh Richard Thingima Bob.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: Richard O'Brien.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: That's the one, as like this like dirty paparazzi guy who like did not realise that was him.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: No, no.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: Uh oh well, because his disguises were so good in the film.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: Uh uh yeah, who else?
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: I want to say, like there's a lot of other people.
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of other people, but there's oh, um flipping uh Bob Geldoff is in it.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: And Mel B gives him a Mel B hairstyle.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: Because there's just like a scene where like uh they get like a bunch of they're they're at like a I don't know, let's say a fashion show or a party, like a f a big celeb party.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: Jennifer Saunders is there playing like a sycophant, not herself, and everyone else is playing themselves.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: Weirdly, you've got Jennifer Saunders, Bob Geldoff, uh, and then uh and then the Spice Girls.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: Like very famous people, and then for no reason you have the guy who was the lead in this series queer as folk, which I can't imagine many.
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: I mean, I did because plot was spice world probably made me gay, but like they it just seemed like such an odd thing, where it's like Jerry with like her breasts as high as they could possibly be, say to this guy, like, Why are men always so uncomfortable around me?
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: And then he goes, like, Oh, I've just got to go to the toilet because he was that uncomfortable, and also probably because he was gay.
- 21:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: So two universes colliding there, that could have been a deleted scene, a mashup between Spice World and Queerus Fight, which would have made perfect sense.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: It yeah, it would have worked perfectly.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: And like I want to know, like how many times have you seen this now?
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: Do you know quite a few times?
- 21:57SPEAKER_00: Because when I was younger, if there was a film that I liked.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: And I had a copy of it, it would just be like, okay, this is what I watch exclusively for like a few days.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: And I would just, when I get to the end of the tape, rewind, watch it again.
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: Um, and now I look out for it whenever it's on any of the streaming services because it like switches around every time every now and again.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: But sometimes no, not right now, but for a while it was on like for a while it was on Netflix, and I remember because like it was, you know, sometimes they release like a classic and then it's like all over the Netflix front page, and it's like, oh, Spiceworld is on.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: And it's like, I would say for a lot of people, it's definitely like a guilty pleasure watch.
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: It definitely looks that way.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: Just like the other films that I suggested, like burlesque or whatever.
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: Um so whenever it is there, I'll be like, Well, I'll trait myself to a viewing.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: Um, and uh, I'm not gonna like pay money so I can watch it whenever I want.
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: No, I'll I'll I'll I'll I'll pay monthly fees to be disappointed regularly, and then when it does come on, I'll be delighted.
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: Um, I I I'd be pretty confident in saying like we're talking like upwards of 50 times.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: Well, it has to be, it has to be that's up there on on this podcast.
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: It's got it, but it's it it's rewatch value and also it is like it's not very long, it's not very it's an easy watch.
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: Um like it like I'm sure some of the reviews say like, oh, it's dreadful, but it's quite short, it's not gonna take up a lot of your time.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: Um, but I do um it it's like one of those films where you re-watch it and then you like look for all the things that you missed like before, and and then like it gets to the point where it's like there's nothing I've missed.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: I'm literally just watching this because I think it's the best film ever now.
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: Uh it's so yeah, it's kind of like indoctrinated me into thinking these five women gave the performances of the decade.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: So, did you watch it again for this, or did you just know it like and you were I don't need to re-watch it?
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: Both.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: I didn't need to watch it, I wanted to.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: Where did you find it?
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: Because I had to find it on YouTube.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: I don't remember actually.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: I must it.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: Do you know what?
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: I think I had it on Prime Video, but like I must have like bought it when it was like a long time ago.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: So it's in my library.
- 24:13SPEAKER_00: I think that might be what it is.
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: I found it on YouTube.
- 24:16SPEAKER_01: Uh someone has uploaded it.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: Someone always does, yeah.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: And it was like 240p the copy.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: I'm like, I guess that's how I'm gonna watch it.
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, what what what what was a P at the time of the Spice World movie?
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: People did two 240p, 360p, 108p?
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: I don't I don't know what this means.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: Um but it's it like it it's it's a very bright and colourful film, anyway.
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: I'd say it's mostly shapes that you're watching.
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: So so you don't need good quality, like uh like Victoria Beckham as a blob on the screen is still quite recognizably Victoria Beckham.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and again, that's more proof that she should have been nominated for a supporting actress.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: You really love Victoria.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: You show me a blob of Merrill Street, and I'll say I'll show you, I'll I'll show you 50 blobs of other women who look exactly the same.
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: But Victoria, there's only one blobby Victoria.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: There's only one Victoria.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: There's only one Victoria blob.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: Is she your favourite spice girl?
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: Or was she growing up?
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: She's not my favourite spice girl.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: Uh but in this film, in this film, she is.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: I think I I would I would say she has the most natural line delivery, and dare I say it is often the much needed comic relief.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: I I am reaching.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: I know I'm not sure.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: That is a reach, yeah.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but it there's lots of times where like they give the the punchline to Victoria, and I understand why.
- 25:48SPEAKER_00: Because if they give it to Jerry, she's not gonna say it right.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: Jerry was like, I remember reading about like how they all felt about the film after they made it, and the other four were like, that's a bit of fun, and you know, like it's what the fans wanted, and we wanted to do it, and we had a laugh.
- 26:05SPEAKER_00: And then Jerry was the only one who was like, I actually wanted to do some really serious deep acting, and I got very annoyed that we couldn't do more deep acting, and I don't know what she thinks deep acting is.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: There's a bit where she sat on a bench with the rest of the girls eating some chips, and she was like, God, sometimes you it used to be that we just think, Where's our next meal coming from?
- 26:29SPEAKER_00: But now it's where is our next single going to chart?
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: And I think she genuinely thought great line, but I'm I'm crushing this.
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I am absolutely nailing this.
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: But I if there wasn't a bit of delusion to the girls, this film would never have been made.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: So I respect it, but um no, in this film I think Victoria is the best one.
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: She gives the best performance.
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: She doesn't I don't know if I agree with that, but but yeah, I agree, she doesn't take herself seriously.
- 26:59SPEAKER_01: No, she doesn't give the best performance.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: Who do you who do you think gave the best performance?
- 27:03SPEAKER_00: Of of the girls.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: They're all pretty equal.
- 27:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, let's not forget, they are surrounded by actual professional actors.
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: So it's it's unfair to say they're the best actor in the film.
- 27:17SPEAKER_01: They're doing not the best actor in the film.
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: No, um but of the girls.
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: Of the girls.
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: I'm trying to think now.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: They're all pretty bad.
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: Did you did you not enjoy MC's like desire to not be always seen as the sporty one whilst riding a cross trainer?
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: It's a real powerful moment.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: They really do not give her a lot to do, do they?
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: No, they don't.
- 27:42SPEAKER_00: But you what what about when Milcy and Victoria nearly drowned with two children?
- 27:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: And it was very dramatic.
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: The most dramatic part of the movie.
- 27:54SPEAKER_01: It's the most scary part of the movie.
- 27:56SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: You really might say.
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: Oh, this is weird, but I might say Mel B.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 28:05SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: Is it when I think of Mel B's performance in this film?
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: I think of her yelling at a fish.
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:13SPEAKER_00: Mel B's thing is that her part of the bus is like covered in leopard print, uh, which I would say by today's standard, very fashion forward, actually.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: Leopard print very in.
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: And then she stares at like a big pillar, very like late 90s thing to have like a pillar in your house that's an aquarium and full of fish.
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: And she looks at all of the fish and goes like, Uh, this one looks like my ex-boyfriend Steven.
- 28:39SPEAKER_00: Uh, and then she starts yelling at the fish.
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: And I don't think that was in the script.
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: That was again a choice.
- 28:46SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 28:46SPEAKER_01: Look, she's ad-living, she's like making stuff up.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: She's thinking of the spot, she's making the words her own.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: Victoria could never Victoria would make different choices.
- 28:59SPEAKER_00: Victoria knows like when to like make a scene about herself.
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: She chooses her methods.
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:05SPEAKER_01: It's side, it's very silent and understated her performance.
- 29:08SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes, it is.
- 29:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: Um I okay, so like have you were I imagine you have to have been a Spy Scores fan growing up though.
- 29:20SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, absolutely.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: Of course.
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: Were they like were they the biggest band or like group at the time for you?
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: I would say so, yeah.
- 29:30SPEAKER_01: Um how old were you when this came out?
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: Uh when did it come out?
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: What year?
- 29:37SPEAKER_00: I feel like.
- 29:37SPEAKER_00: 97?
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: I would have been six years old.
- 29:40SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 29:41SPEAKER_00: Um, which is weird because I'm 18 now, so I don't know how that works.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, time is weird.
- 29:46SPEAKER_00: Time is weird.
- 29:47SPEAKER_00: Um I I they definitely were because uh I watch documentaries about the Spice Girls, like not really frequently, just like one a month, normal amount.
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: And they you you you see like their sudden like rise to success.
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: Like a really not a lot happened before they became like this this huge thing around the world.
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: And I think it was like it got to the point where there was like a Spice Girls TV special on every couple of months, and then there was like uh rumors that they were gonna do a Spice Boys because Spice Girls was so successful, and like when Jerry left the band, it was like worldwide news, it was all anybody could talk about, it was like a member of the royal family had been assassinated or something.
- 30:33SPEAKER_00: I really remember it clearly, yeah, vividly, and like she and and I think she knew at the time what a big deal it was because she like kept a video diary of what it was like and she like recorded herself and like she did it on Melby's birthday, she just and she didn't tell them I didn't know about that.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 30:52SPEAKER_00: So they're about to get they they get on like a little jet plane to fly them to where the like their next appearance is.
- 30:59SPEAKER_00: I want to say it's on the national lottery show with Scottish legend Carol Smiley Smiley.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: And forgot she existed.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: Forgot she existed.
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: Well, I mean tangent, she's still like a thing, but not a big thing.
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: She sells dishwasher tablets in Scotland, by which I mean she's in a dishwasher tablet advert.
- 31:19SPEAKER_00: She's not selling them out of the suitcase on the street.
- 31:21SPEAKER_00: So there you go.
- 31:22SPEAKER_00: And you And I know this because of your fiance.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: Because of my fiance.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: Lovely little segment for the show, What is Carol Smiley up to?
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: Um so but in the so what what happened was they they flew to the thing, um, and they they do the appearance, but Jerry's not there, and they go, Oh, Jerry's not well, and they like say hi to Jerry through the camera.
- 31:43SPEAKER_00: But what had really happened was Jerry got off the plane before the rest of the girls and said, Bye, girls, I'll see you tomorrow.
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: And they all knew that was weird because they're the Spice Girls, they go everywhere together.
- 31:54SPEAKER_00: So we're like, why where is she going on her own?
- 31:56SPEAKER_00: And she just left and just never came back and then publicly announced, I am not part of the Spice Girls anymore.
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: So they were all completely blindsided by it.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: Now they've forgiven her, um, conveniently in time when they want to do like a full arena tour.
- 32:12SPEAKER_00: Um, but um, it was like it was like huge news, and it was like and it was like every day it was just like, oh, well, Jerry said this thing.
- 32:21SPEAKER_00: Oh, well, the Spice Girls have said this thing.
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: Oh, well, Mel B's got involved now, and like what and then Jerry came up with a solo career, and then all of them had a solo career, then they came back, and like it they they were the moment to they were just like it was such a period of time though, when you look at it, because it was like what 96 to 2000, I guess.
- 32:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, in terms of like the length of their like music career, not not really long at all.
- 32:48SPEAKER_00: They only came out with three albums, so only three.
- 32:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they had they had uh two with Jerry, and then they did an album after she left, and then they sort of all went into their solo stuff.
- 33:01SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: I didn't realize it was I didn't realize it was only three albums.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: Like now they would be turning them over every like six months or something, I feel like.
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: Um Right, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:11SPEAKER_01: It's all it's kind of reminiscent a little bit of Little what happened with Little Mix as well, where she where they were like she went on to that show.
- 33:18SPEAKER_01: I don't remember I don't know their names for Little Mix, but like she went on basically like they went on a show and they were like, Oh, she's sick, she can't do it, and then like the next day she like she's left.
- 33:26SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:28SPEAKER_00: Jesse.
- 33:28SPEAKER_00: So there's so there's Jesse, Jade, Perry, and Leanne.
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: I also love Little Mix.
- 33:33SPEAKER_00: Um, but um the yeah, it's exactly like that.
- 33:37SPEAKER_00: I think I think so.
- 33:39SPEAKER_00: The reason Jerry says that she left was because she felt like she couldn't do anything on her own.
- 33:44SPEAKER_00: Whereas I I think Jesse left Little Mix because she could she couldn't stand the comparison to the other three girls, and she always felt like people always saw the other three girls as better in like a number of different ways.
- 33:57SPEAKER_00: So she always felt inadequate and it took a really big toll on her mental health.
- 34:00SPEAKER_00: And that's not saying Jerry didn't also have like her own issues as well.
- 34:05SPEAKER_00: Um, she says she wanted to do a breast cancer event, but she wanted to do it on her own, and the the her management wouldn't let her, so she was like, Okay, that's the last straw.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: Okay, yeah.
- 34:18SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 34:19SPEAKER_01: Uh like what's also interesting is like between this movie coming out and it coming out on video, she left.
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: Oh really?
- 34:28SPEAKER_01: She left the group in the middle of that.
- 34:30SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 34:31SPEAKER_01: And so the so like uh apparently like the studio were terrified that it wasn't it was gonna stop selling and like not do very well, but then it like ended up selling incredibly well apparently on video.
- 34:41SPEAKER_00: Well, I mean I could imagine, and I guess like even if like at a box office it doesn't do well, I would imagine it could only like yeah, the publicity and then like all of the merch that it would like they would make, like action figures, pencil cases, bag, whatever.
- 35:00SPEAKER_00: It must be like a boon for all of that stuff.
- 35:03SPEAKER_01: So it said it says it was in the UK it was number one for on the video charts for six weeks and certified 11 times platinum, becoming the ninth best-selling video of '98.
- 35:12SPEAKER_01: And then in the US it peaked at number one for five consecutive weeks and was the fifth highest selling.
- 35:18SPEAKER_00: So that's my girls.
- 35:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 35:23SPEAKER_01: And then they did a 20th anniversary screening of it in 2017, which did you go to?
- 35:28SPEAKER_00: No, I did not.
- 35:30unknown: No.
- 35:30SPEAKER_01: Were you aware of it?
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: I actually wasn't.
- 35:33SPEAKER_00: Where was it?
- 35:34SPEAKER_01: Uh it says in uh various cinemas in the UK and Australia.
- 35:38SPEAKER_00: Ah, well.
- 35:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I just didn't know about it.
- 35:44SPEAKER_00: I was gonna say I was gonna say, like, oh, I'm banned from cinemas, but like, well, anyway.
- 35:51SPEAKER_00: No, I didn't, but I it yeah, it's cut I would say it's like a cult film now.
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: It you know, akin to the room or something like that, where like if there's a sc or like the Rocky Horror Picture Show, whereas they can make like a big event out of like a screening of it in an actual theatre, especially for the people who like have a newfound appreciation of it now, yeah, and maybe weren't old enough to see it when it was originally out.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: Because I don't think I saw it.
- 36:24SPEAKER_00: Maybe I did see it in the cinema.
- 36:25SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 36:26SPEAKER_00: I think we got it on video, and that was the first time I saw it.
- 36:29SPEAKER_00: I didn't see it when it came out.
- 36:32SPEAKER_01: I I remember my cousin seeing it, and I had like no interest in going because I wasn't like I don't think I was like hugely into the Swice Girls or anything.
- 36:41SPEAKER_01: But then like now watching now watching it back, I was like, oh, I like that song.
- 36:45SPEAKER_01: I like that song.
- 36:46SPEAKER_01: I like this one.
- 36:47SPEAKER_00: I mean, it it was definitely like also a way to sell the second album.
- 36:52SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: The songs are the songs are bangers, they all slap.
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it it like from the slow one at the beginning, that's like a bit sensual, and they're not girls now, and then at the end you've got spice up your life, and then there's like a bunch of songs in the middle, and like I mean, yeah, sorry, it was really stupid.
- 37:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's a song at the beginning and a song at the end, and then there's other songs in the middle, and that's kind of the film.
- 37:17SPEAKER_01: That's like a much more succinct synopsis that I could have said, and then there's this and then there's some kind of plot throughout the movie as well.
- 37:27SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, not enough to get in the way of the songs, don't worry about it.
- 37:31SPEAKER_01: No, um, but it does open with so it opens with Bond style credits.
- 37:36SPEAKER_01: Yep, yeah, which is very weird at the time as well, because it's like, was Bond that big at the time?
- 37:44SPEAKER_00: I don't feel like maybe because of the Roger Moore connection, probably and also going back to the subplot of the film producer trying to cast the girls in a film, his whole thing is that he actually doesn't have an idea for the film, he makes it up on the spot, he just wants the spice girls in a film because he know it will make money.
- 38:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um, and uh one of the ideas is like the five of them are like James Bond type super spies.
- 38:13SPEAKER_00: That's right, yeah.
- 38:14SPEAKER_00: And that's probably the most like uh sexual scene of the film because they're all in like sort of like latex silver suits, and they all have different uh they all have different abilities.
- 38:28SPEAKER_00: So like Jerry it is like master of disguise, and I think she goes into a phone box and when she comes back out, she is uh Wonder Woman.
- 38:38SPEAKER_00: She no no no, she's she's a man, she's and a really famous man, and I've forgotten his name, Ronnie something.
- 38:45SPEAKER_00: It was like a like a big deal, like it like an Oscar-winning actor, I think.
- 38:51SPEAKER_00: Uh Bob Hoskins.
- 38:54SPEAKER_00: Bob Hoskins, yeah.
- 38:57SPEAKER_00: Um so that was like her ability.
- 38:59SPEAKER_00: Vic and then and and like Mel B's the explosives expert.
- 39:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 39:05SPEAKER_00: LC is uh she's not like a fighting person, like a sporty person.
- 39:12SPEAKER_00: Oh, she comes down on the she does the Mission Impossible style like lower from the ceiling, but then she plays a game of Sabutio because she's sporty spice.
- 39:21unknown: Okay.
- 39:22SPEAKER_00: Has to have some kind of reference to sport, has to have some kind of sport reference in there.
- 39:25SPEAKER_00: And then uh baby is is the fighter.
- 39:30SPEAKER_00: So she get she like beats up a bunch of dudes and then I think puts in a lollipop in her mouth, and then they and then they go like and then Victoria, she's just Victoria, and it's just Victoria in a tight, tight, tight little dress, and and then just like literally purrs at the character, goes, Meow.
- 39:51SPEAKER_00: Again, she's not taking it seriously, she doesn't care that she's not up for best supporting actress, which is exactly why she should be.
- 40:00SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, that's probably why there's like a little bond connection in, and again, another like really crazy cameo that makes no sense, but it's there, it's there if you want it.
- 40:11SPEAKER_01: I've just discovered something in in the Wikipedia page that you might you're not gonna like.
- 40:18SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 40:19SPEAKER_01: The five of them won an award.
- 40:22SPEAKER_01: Is it a Razzie?
- 40:23SPEAKER_01: It's a Razzie for worst actress.
- 40:26SPEAKER_01: They could they all won it together.
- 40:29SPEAKER_00: Four of them I could see why, but you know which one I think should be left out of that.
- 40:34SPEAKER_00: Uh hey, it's an award.
- 40:37SPEAKER_00: You can say this is an award-winning film.
- 40:40SPEAKER_01: It also won Best Stinker uh Stinker's Bad Movie Awards.
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 40:48SPEAKER_01: But I've no idea what that is.
- 40:50SPEAKER_01: As well as Worst Actress or slash or British singing group pretending to act.
- 40:56SPEAKER_00: That feels targeted.
- 40:57SPEAKER_00: That feels like bullying.
- 40:59SPEAKER_00: Also, I didn't know there was like another like bad film awards after the Razzies.
- 41:05SPEAKER_00: And I'd like to think that the more of them there are, the worse they sound because it goes like Razzies, and then did you say it's called the Stinkers?
- 41:11SPEAKER_00: Stinkers Bad Movie Awards.
- 41:12SPEAKER_00: The Stinkers Bad Movie Awards, and then like the next one is just like the biggest, steamiest, creamiest shit.
- 41:22SPEAKER_01: And that's what um the Westlife movie's gonna care.
- 41:24SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, it's gonna sore weep the board.
- 41:29SPEAKER_01: But they were also nominated for favourite movie actress at the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards.
- 41:35SPEAKER_01: Well, again, yeah.
- 41:36SPEAKER_01: And the Blockbuster Entertainment Award for Maverick Movie Actress.
- 41:39SPEAKER_00: So they know they know their demographic.
- 41:42SPEAKER_00: Like, I don't think like The Guardian was gonna go to this film and be like, it's really groundbreaking cinema.
- 41:49SPEAKER_00: You're not gonna believe this.
- 41:50SPEAKER_00: But Emma Bunton has quite a speech about white privilege and black lives matter.
- 41:55SPEAKER_00: She that's just that was just never gonna happen.
- 41:57SPEAKER_00: But she but it now I'm trying to find the Guardian review of it.
- 42:02SPEAKER_00: But like it it it caters to the fans, it's a fan service film, and their fans at the time were probably quite quite young.
- 42:11SPEAKER_01: Oh, they have to have been, yeah.
- 42:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, who else so of course like adults are gonna think it's a terrible film, it's not for them.
- 42:21SPEAKER_01: But at the same time, like who who cares what the adults think?
- 42:27SPEAKER_01: Like it it doesn't I don't know.
- 42:30SPEAKER_01: I I'm looking back on it now and I'm like it's very stupid, but it's it's funny, it's lighthearted, and yeah, it's bad, but it's fun.
- 42:40SPEAKER_01: It's very fun.
- 42:41SPEAKER_00: It's it's quite camp.
- 42:43SPEAKER_00: It's a camp little romp.
- 42:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:45SPEAKER_01: But I think they're also aware of what they're doing.
- 42:47SPEAKER_01: Like I think at the time, this is one thing I would wanted to say, but I think at the time people were judging it for for just like the overall thing.
- 42:57SPEAKER_01: But like when you when you look back on it now, they were very aware of what they were doing in like a send-up of of those kind of movies.
- 43:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 43:05SPEAKER_01: Of like the monkey style, the Beatles, like all of that sort of thing.
- 43:10SPEAKER_01: They were aware of what they were doing there, and they were playing up to their characters as well, and what people see.
- 43:15SPEAKER_00: Absolutely, yeah, which kind of frees them of the responsibility to like do acting good, yeah, or or you know, it say words correctly.
- 43:27SPEAKER_00: Or you know, they they they're not tied to any of that.
- 43:30SPEAKER_00: It's all supposed to just be a bit of fun, they're making fun of themselves, yeah.
- 43:35SPEAKER_00: Uh, and again, I think the Oscars, the Academy, they should take note of that when they put their short lists together.
- 43:45SPEAKER_01: So, do you think this should have been up against so what you this 97, so this would have been up against Titanic?
- 43:52SPEAKER_00: Oh fuck you, Titanic.
- 43:54SPEAKER_00: First of all, what Titanic is like what three and a half hours long, maybe the direction.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: You know what happens at the end.
- 44:04SPEAKER_00: You don't know what's gonna happen in this one.
- 44:06SPEAKER_00: What what's that?
- 44:07SPEAKER_00: Victoria Beckham's driving the spice bus over Tower Bridge.
- 44:12SPEAKER_00: Excuse me.
- 44:13SPEAKER_01: Not just Tower Bridge, it's a it's an it's a like specially designed Tower Bridge that they've made themselves.
- 44:19SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 44:20SPEAKER_00: Like it it's it's special effects that really rivals Avatar.
- 44:24SPEAKER_00: Um rivals Titanic.
- 44:26SPEAKER_00: Rivals Titanic oh Google, yeah.
- 44:27SPEAKER_00: Oh, St.
- 44:28SPEAKER_00: Guy.
- 44:29SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay, yeah.
- 44:31SPEAKER_00: Um but uh yeah, and what Kate Winslit and and Leo Thingimajigger, he yeah, okay.
- 44:39SPEAKER_00: They have like quite an interesting love story.
- 44:42SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I'm just gonna say it, I think the age difference is problematic.
- 44:47SPEAKER_00: Are you gonna get a a possibly pedophilic relationship in the Spice World movie?
- 44:51SPEAKER_00: No, you're not.
- 44:52SPEAKER_00: No, no, you're not.
- 44:53SPEAKER_00: Do you get any relationship in the Spice World movie?
- 44:56SPEAKER_00: You get friendship, you get friendship, which is the most important kind of ship, and that's a ship that never sinks, unlike the Titanic, which definitely did.
- 45:06SPEAKER_00: That was beautiful.
- 45:08SPEAKER_00: I may or may not have written some of my own reviews of this film.
- 45:13SPEAKER_00: And I'm just borrowing some lines that I wrote from.
- 45:16SPEAKER_01: Still a good line.
- 45:18SPEAKER_01: Um I really hope that's real.
- 45:24SPEAKER_00: It's written on Amazon or something.
- 45:27SPEAKER_00: If it's not, I might go there tonight and put it there so that it becomes canon.
- 45:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 45:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 45:34SPEAKER_01: Um so did you ever see them in concert?
- 45:39SPEAKER_01: Uh I have, but very recently.
- 45:42SPEAKER_01: Um the one a couple of years ago.
- 45:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was my um fiance's birthday, and conveniently they were playing Murrayfield Stadium here in Edinburgh.
- 45:52SPEAKER_00: Uh, and we went along and uh and had a lovely time, really drunk.
- 45:56SPEAKER_00: But it like a lot of as in they were, we were completely sober.
- 46:00SPEAKER_00: Um no, um it it was so much fun, and it was I mean, people are age like gearing up to their 30s, but that makes perfect sense because they were legends to us when we were younger.
- 46:13SPEAKER_00: Um I uh the only critique I had of them in concert, and I don't have anything to compare it to from when I was younger because I didn't see them in concert then, is that you know what song they're singing because you recognize the song, but you can't really hear them singing.
- 46:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 46:34SPEAKER_00: This like it so I couldn't tell you if they were singing live or not, because I genuinely just could not hear them.
- 46:41SPEAKER_00: And but what is a fun bit is they have like a live band on stage.
- 46:45SPEAKER_00: Live band.
- 46:46SPEAKER_00: And and the four of them, because Victoria didn't feel like doing it, uh, because she's focusing on more serious acting, um, she um she uh it's so they they're with the live band and they like do a thing where they randomly like sing each other's songs from their solo career, and they get to the Mel B song, and the other girl starts singing it, and she was like, Oh what?
- 47:08SPEAKER_00: Is this one of mine?
- 47:09SPEAKER_00: I don't fucking remember the words to this.
- 47:12SPEAKER_00: She has no recollection of her own solo career.
- 47:14SPEAKER_00: I don't remember her solo career.
- 47:16SPEAKER_00: You're in good company.
- 47:19SPEAKER_00: But yes, I have that, yeah.
- 47:20SPEAKER_00: So I appreciate them in live in concert.
- 47:23SPEAKER_00: Probably when I was old enough to like really appreciate it.
- 47:26SPEAKER_00: If I'd gone when I was little, I could have imagined that I would just like complain it was too noisy or there's too many people.
- 47:32SPEAKER_01: I had a thing where I went on a series of like first dates within like a space of a couple of weeks, and yeah, every one of the women that I'd been on and on that gone on the date, I was like, Oh, what did you get up to uh the last couple of in the last recent and they were like, Oh, I went to see Spice Girls last night.
- 47:49SPEAKER_01: I was like, Okay, like I've heard all about it from everyone.
- 47:56SPEAKER_00: I mean, chances are I mean, what I'm hearing is that maybe you stood outside the entrance and just asked every woman who came out, yeah, do you want a date?
- 48:04SPEAKER_00: Do you want a date?
- 48:05SPEAKER_00: Do you want a date?
- 48:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 48:07SPEAKER_00: And it worked apparently.
- 48:09SPEAKER_01: It was just a very odd couple of weeks.
- 48:15SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, so back to the movie itself.
- 48:19SPEAKER_01: And that I want to talk about the stuff I want to talk about the stuff that's problematic now.
- 48:26SPEAKER_00: Please let's.
- 48:28SPEAKER_01: So one character in it, Michael Barrymore, playing Yes.
- 48:34SPEAKER_01: A drill sergeant, a drill sergeant, and he's exhausting.
- 48:39SPEAKER_01: Yep, yep.
- 48:41SPEAKER_01: Um I don't know what he's doing in this movie.
- 48:44SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, I mean, okay.
- 48:48SPEAKER_00: Was this before or after Barrymore had the the pool instead?
- 48:55SPEAKER_01: It's right before.
- 48:57SPEAKER_01: Just before just before.
- 48:59SPEAKER_00: So it's unfortunate timing.
- 49:01SPEAKER_00: Even worse is that the scene that he's in does involve the girls, some of them falling into a padline pool.
- 49:09SPEAKER_00: I'm not I'm not drawing any connections.
- 49:12SPEAKER_00: I'm not saying they knew, I'm not saying they had a hand in it.
- 49:16SPEAKER_00: Um even the character itself is slightly problematic, though.
- 49:19SPEAKER_00: I mean, yes.
- 49:21SPEAKER_00: It is he I mean, it takes it takes a couple watches to understand what the hell he's there for.
- 49:31SPEAKER_00: I don't think it was like until I watched it as like a in my twenties, where I was like, oh, he's supposed to be teaching them to dance.
- 49:41SPEAKER_00: This is like a dance camp, and like he's supposed to get them like fit for the live show and teach them their routines, and then and then the girls are like, Oh, we don't like your dance moves, yeah.
- 49:51SPEAKER_00: We're just gonna do our own thing, and then he joins in, but he's in like an army outfit, yeah, but I can't picture him in the army.
- 50:00SPEAKER_00: He's like very he's very camp, but like when I say camp, I mean like stereotype camp.
- 50:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like offensively, yeah.
- 50:09SPEAKER_00: Um and then he's admittedly, he's not in the film for very long.
- 50:15SPEAKER_00: No, he's there for just that bit.
- 50:18SPEAKER_00: He get he's like, learn this dance routine.
- 50:20SPEAKER_00: The girls say no, and he's like, All right, then, and then they go do an assault course, which he just has on the grounds for some reason, and it's colour coordinated to match each girl's favourite colour, because of course, and then again, highlight of Victoria, instead of doing the assault course, she just catwalks down the side of it and lets the other girls get wet.
- 50:43SPEAKER_00: And and I'm I'm confused why like you're still not jumping in saying, like, yeah, the award was robbed from her.
- 50:50SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, I will say you're bringing me round on her being the best in this movie.
- 50:56SPEAKER_00: I think so.
- 50:57SPEAKER_00: I think just from like the sheer sheer refusal to do what the other girls are doing, it'd be like, yeah, I'm here for fun.
- 51:06SPEAKER_00: I'm not gonna like make a complete it of myself there.
- 51:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:09SPEAKER_00: Um to be fair though, it um I think oh god, I want to say that somebody said like a line, a throwaway thing, that is probably more problematic than Barrymore being in it.
- 51:26SPEAKER_00: I've forgotten what the line is.
- 51:28SPEAKER_00: I just remember I can't remember who said no, just like in the film in general.
- 51:34SPEAKER_00: Oh, I may have to re-watch it because I just there's like a couple I mean, again, this is a film from like over 20 years ago.
- 51:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:43SPEAKER_00: So I mean, yeah, Barrymore's probably the thing that sticks out the most just because that's Michael Barrymore.
- 51:51SPEAKER_01: But then I know there are some other scenes I we can get to.
- 51:55SPEAKER_01: There's so yeah, there is a scene where they sing a Gary Glitter song.
- 52:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and yeah.
- 52:05SPEAKER_01: He filmed a four-minute cameo and then everything came out about him, so they're like, We'll cut we'll cut his scene, but we'll keep the song in.
- 52:13SPEAKER_00: But the song's fine, because that doesn't benefit him in any way.
- 52:18SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, I God, I had forgotten about that bit because obviously in that scene the whole deal is uh Jerry uh pretending she can speak Italian and she just speaks and she speaks like a bit of Spanish at them, and they look at her confused because she's not speaking their language, and then she uses the word compromisation, which I don't think is a word.
- 52:40SPEAKER_00: No, uh compromise is is what she meant to say.
- 52:44SPEAKER_00: Uh and that's an example of taking the words and making them your own in a bad way.
- 52:48SPEAKER_00: Victoria would never, uh but they come out like all oiled up, and then they these backing dances, and then they reach a compromise where instead they come out and they just have the arse cut out of their trousers.
- 53:04SPEAKER_00: It's not a crucial plot point, just like the rest of the film.
- 53:08SPEAKER_01: It's a whole thing of like just getting into Milan for some reason and then they come back.
- 53:12SPEAKER_00: They immediately leave.
- 53:14SPEAKER_00: And keep in mind, like this, like they sing like the Gary Gittes glitter song in Italy.
- 53:18SPEAKER_00: So it's like, you know, it's Italy, like it's a bit more lax there.
- 53:22SPEAKER_00: Like, don't worry about it.
- 53:24SPEAKER_00: Like you get like appropriation, like problematicness, it's not a thing.
- 53:28SPEAKER_00: They didn't get they didn't get that in Italy until like 2010.
- 53:32SPEAKER_00: So like it was fine at the time.
- 53:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's it's a very weird scene, I have to say.
- 53:39SPEAKER_01: I think it's might be the worst scene in the movie, uh for me.
- 53:43SPEAKER_01: Um and then the other thing is this is no fault of their own for this one.
- 53:48SPEAKER_01: Um they did have to cut out mentions of Princess Diana and Gianni uh Versace.
- 53:56SPEAKER_01: Because those things Why?
- 53:58SPEAKER_00: What happened to it?
- 53:59SPEAKER_00: What happened?
- 54:00SPEAKER_00: No, I know.
- 54:02SPEAKER_00: Well, Victoria Beckham was driving the spice bus, and then one thing I told.
- 54:07SPEAKER_00: No, no, no, that's not.
- 54:08SPEAKER_00: I know, no, no, no.
- 54:10SPEAKER_00: Um, if the Academy is listening, I was that was a joke.
- 54:12SPEAKER_00: I'm so sorry.
- 54:13SPEAKER_01: With the Union Jack on it as well.
- 54:22SPEAKER_00: That I mean, that is a conspiracy theory that I would love to see.
- 54:26SPEAKER_01: Like please put that in your review that when you write it.
- 54:29SPEAKER_00: I just no, it's getting a bit QAnon y now, isn't it?
- 54:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 54:34SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, I mean it it just makes you think like 1998.
- 54:40SPEAKER_00: It went on in 97, a lot happened.
- 54:43SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, and it I don't know.
- 54:47SPEAKER_00: It's uh it's the same way that like people watch Friends, and some of the things they say in Friends like now would not fly.
- 54:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but at the time nobody would have called that out.
- 54:59SPEAKER_00: And and yeah, I mean, I guess like like good for them that they cut out the references.
- 55:07SPEAKER_00: It might have like But you know what?
- 55:09SPEAKER_00: I do what I'll start a campaign.
- 55:11SPEAKER_00: Director's cut of spy swelt.
- 55:13SPEAKER_00: If there was a director, that's neither confirmed nor denied.
- 55:16SPEAKER_01: Well, we could talk about this director if you want.
- 55:18SPEAKER_01: Can we please?
- 55:19SPEAKER_01: So let me just find his name.
- 55:22SPEAKER_01: Uh he is Bob Spears.
- 55:25SPEAKER_01: Oh, James Cameron?
- 55:26SPEAKER_01: No, no, no.
- 55:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, James Cameron.
- 55:28SPEAKER_01: He did this on his off time on his Right, right, right.
- 55:30SPEAKER_01: Um Bob Spears, who was not aware of who the Spice Girls were when he took the job.
- 55:38SPEAKER_01: Of course he wasn't, of course he wasn't.
- 55:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 55:40SPEAKER_01: And he'd just come off of filming the movie, let me find it.
- 55:46SPEAKER_01: He made the movie That Darn Cat.
- 55:51SPEAKER_00: Which is not like obviously that you know that was the deep acting that Jerry was talking about.
- 55:56SPEAKER_00: She was like, Bob, I've seen your work.
- 55:58SPEAKER_00: The cat, love it.
- 55:59SPEAKER_00: I would like to explore some of those themes in this film, please.
- 56:03SPEAKER_01: Uh and then he went on to make Spice World and then finished with Kevin of the North.
- 56:10SPEAKER_00: What's Kevin of the North?
- 56:12SPEAKER_01: Also known as Chili Dogs.
- 56:16SPEAKER_01: Your guess is no, sorry, no clue.
- 56:21SPEAKER_01: Just that film and then nothing ever again.
- 56:22SPEAKER_01: And then nothing.
- 56:23SPEAKER_01: So he made he made two films in '97, one in 2001, and then never again.
- 56:29SPEAKER_00: Well, I think we know what his peak was then.
- 56:34SPEAKER_00: I just can't imagine fascinating.
- 56:37SPEAKER_00: I could just imagine him sat in the chair just being like, hey Jerry, um, maybe on this take, just try to, you know, do it like like better.
- 56:49SPEAKER_00: So like before, like, okay, you gave it a try, and now this time, do it with like good acting.
- 56:56SPEAKER_00: Like act good.
- 56:57SPEAKER_00: Um I am, I'm really trying.
- 57:00SPEAKER_00: Well, okay, Cherry, that's great.
- 57:02SPEAKER_00: Um, but you're not looking at the camera, you're saying words that aren't in the script.
- 57:07SPEAKER_00: Um What about Victoria?
- 57:09SPEAKER_00: She's not doing anything.
- 57:11SPEAKER_00: That's why she's the best.
- 57:16SPEAKER_01: I hate this, I'm leaving the van.
- 57:23SPEAKER_01: Oh also, Dominic West is in this movie as a photographer.
- 57:27SPEAKER_01: Did you notice him?
- 57:30SPEAKER_01: He is, isn't he?
- 57:32SPEAKER_01: And he's got very ridiculous hair.
- 57:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 57:35SPEAKER_00: There's somebody else as well, and I think it's the guy who's the assistant to the big paparazzi boss.
- 57:41SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 57:42SPEAKER_00: He's got like quite an infamous line where he was describing the photographer they want to hire, and he goes, like, this guy's got everything.
- 57:49SPEAKER_00: He got like Ulrika Johnson picking her nose, he got Tinky Winky having a poo.
- 57:54SPEAKER_00: Because of course we all want to see it.
- 57:56SPEAKER_00: We all want to see it.
- 57:57SPEAKER_00: Show me that Tinky Winky butthole.
- 57:59SPEAKER_00: But they uh they but he that's someone famous as well who's famous now.
- 58:05SPEAKER_01: Jason Fleming, is that who he is?
- 58:08SPEAKER_01: Maybe.
- 58:09SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 58:10SPEAKER_01: I'm just looking at like some of the people in it.
- 58:13SPEAKER_01: The g- I know the uh the the movie producer's assistant who's like actually pitching is now in Superstore or was like the lead one of the leads in Superstore.
- 58:23SPEAKER_00: Yes, no, he's Glenn in Superstore.
- 58:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and he looks very different.
- 58:26SPEAKER_00: Very different.
- 58:27SPEAKER_00: Well, he's 20-something years older.
- 58:30SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 58:30SPEAKER_01: Like unrecognizable.
- 58:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he he looks like he's aged many more years.
- 58:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 58:36SPEAKER_00: Uh but that might be for the role, I don't know.
- 58:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 58:39SPEAKER_00: But uh, yeah, those are the only but those are the only two things I know him from.
- 58:43SPEAKER_00: Although I am I right in thinking he once was on Saturday Night Live.
- 58:47SPEAKER_00: Um I feel like he was.
- 58:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 58:52SPEAKER_01: I did not know.
- 58:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 58:54SPEAKER_00: Oh, also the guy who's the other movie producer is uh George Went.
- 59:00SPEAKER_00: Yes, yeah.
- 59:01SPEAKER_00: Frontiers.
- 59:02SPEAKER_00: Oh, you said that, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 59:03SPEAKER_00: Frontiers, yeah.
- 59:05SPEAKER_01: And again, like what is he doing?
- 59:07SPEAKER_01: Why is he in this?
- 59:08SPEAKER_00: It but uh you can kind of has anyone talked about movie 43?
- 59:15SPEAKER_00: No, they haven't, thankfully.
- 59:17SPEAKER_00: Okay, because there's so many like legends about how that film came to be.
- 59:22SPEAKER_00: And apparently, a lot of actors will do a film if you say to them it's good money and we don't need you for that long.
- 59:31SPEAKER_00: So, like if they say to a bunch of them, we can do all of your scenes in one at most two days, they'll just show up and do it.
- 59:39SPEAKER_00: Because like the the two producer guys, they're not in it.
- 59:43SPEAKER_00: They're in the world.
- 59:43SPEAKER_01: They probably filmed in a day or two.
- 59:45SPEAKER_00: You could film all of those scenes in a day, right?
- 59:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they're all in the same location, aren't they?
- 59:49SPEAKER_01: From what I remember.
- 59:49SPEAKER_01: Oh no, the Royal Albert Hall as well, but yeah, for the most part, they're just sitting out at a table.
- 59:53SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 59:54SPEAKER_00: They're like one's at a restaurant and then they're at the Royal Albert Hall, and then they're there's one somewhere else in like a corridor or something.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_00: You get very easy to all do on one day.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_01: Very easy.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_01: Uh there yeah, all the cameos are one day, definitely, as well.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_01: Uh like Barry Moore uh Elton John is just literally just walking through the set, it looks like.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_00: Of course he's in it.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_00: Is he in it right at the end in the middle?
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_01: No, it's by the beginning.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_01: He he's like pretty much opening the movie.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_00: Oh god, yeah.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_00: And they don't they don't like him or something.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_00: Or do I don't they do?
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_01: They just say like I'll hi Elton and he like suggests something to them, but I can't remember what he suggests.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_00: Uh listen, I've got this a thing about Princess Diana.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_00: Keep it under your hat.
- 1:00:39SPEAKER_00: Keep it under your hat.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, Elton John, another one.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_00: There's probably like other music styles as well.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_01: Um we've got uh Fry and Laurie are in it, but they're as separate people, like not together.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_01: In fact, I think Stephen Fry has the one of the like bad lines in it.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_01: I've not find I'll see if I'm gonna find it.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_00: Oh no, he go he's in it there's a a fantasy where uh baby bice uh baby bicep is like I don't want people to think of me like the sweet and innocent one.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_00: They talk about like her smile and she can just smile and get away with stuff, and it cuts like a fantasy she's having about and we don't talk about this enough, about her straight up murdering people.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, she sat in like a in like a smoking room and Stephen Fry is it Fry or is it Lori?
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_01: No, this is Laurie is the is Potrow.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_01: He plays and then Stephen Fry is a judge.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_00: So like there's a thing with Laurie where she she's like got like all of the bullets around her and she's like polishing the gun, sexually suggestive much, and then and then like they did she pins it on somebody else just by smiling, psychopath, and then Fry is there, uh when like the girls are like worried about their next single coming out, as Jerry told us on the bench, and she's and they're like not it what is it like not only is this song not jiggy, not hip, but fails to be a bop or something, something like that, and he sentences them to uh to like their song charting at like 179 in Japan or something, and then I feel like he makes some kind of vaguely racist comment as well.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_00: I think he does too.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_00: We might be saying that just because it's Stephen Fry.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_00: And it I mean, potentially, yeah.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_01: Um who else?
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_01: And then there's uh oh yeah, I wanted to can we also talk about their best friend?
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_01: Wait, wait, you touched on it earlier, but like I I want to talk about their best friend who what is that?
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_01: What's going on?
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_00: In the words of Lorraine Kelly, what's the point of that?
- 1:02:54unknown: What's the point?
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_00: She so in I think in order to humanize the girls in some way, they have a plot where um they they all have the same best friend, just one, yeah, just one best friend.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_00: We only know of two other people related to the Spice Girls.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_00: One is this friend, and then the other one is Melby's ex-friend Steven, that looks like the fish in the bus.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_00: And then she turns up at like their rehearsal, she turns up at their uh like press thing.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_01: She wonders in everything like nine months pregnant.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:27SPEAKER_00: Oh, she's nine months pregnant for the whole film.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_00: Like, no changing the bump at all.
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_00: But like she takes she rocks up to the rehearsal, and then she just she so casually says this that you're like, surely some more backstory is required here.
- 1:03:44SPEAKER_00: She rocks up completely pregnant, falls into like a beanbag chair, waves to the girls, they stop their song mid-song, and they go, Well, our pregnant friend is here, our priorities are we gotta look after our friend.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_00: So they all go over there and they go, like, oh yeah, how's the baby?
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_00: And and how's the boyfriend?
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_00: And he and she just goes, Oh, he's left me.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_00: And they all go, Oh no, what?
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_00: And then like, oh, of course, yeah, oh of course, and then like it could they try to like get trick trick you into thinking one of them's about to swear, and it's baby spice again.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_00: We're like, Oh god, what a complete and then it cuts to something else, and it was like, Oh, she could have said anything then.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_00: I think I think she said, I think she said the C-word, I'm just gonna say it, but she's just so casual, just like oh he's left me, and then they're all just like, oh well, we'll help you look after it, and then and then at some point she asks them to be godmother to the baby at the press event, so it's like oh added responsibility, and then they're like, Oh, we've been really bad friends to her, we don't see her enough.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_00: Let's take her to this like drag bar, and then when our favorite song comes on, which by the way is our own song, it's like a remix to their own song, yeah.
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_00: We're all gonna go to the dance floor and dance to it, she'll be all right on her own, and also like pregnant women love nightclubs when like with all of the alcohol and drugs and all of the sex that they're probably not gonna have, they love it, they absolutely love being surrounded by things that they can't have.
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_00: Then she just openly goes into labor on the floor, they finish their choreography, then they go like, oh no, let's get her to the ambulance, but there's no ambulance, so they drive her there in the bus, and then and then, like, I would say a lot of the scenes in the in the hospital are some of the more questionable ones of the film.
- 1:05:30SPEAKER_00: Like, again, I think this is Victoria's most iconic line.
- 1:05:34SPEAKER_00: There's like uh three of them are sat in the waiting room.
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_00: It's Mel, Jerry, and Vicky, and she a mum comes up to them and goes, like, I'm sorry, the spice girls, my son is in a coma.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_00: Do you think you could come talk to him?
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_00: And they're all like, Yeah, all right.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_00: So they do it, and they're all there looking at the boy who's really he's like so hard in a coma, and I'm I I think this is the best.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_00: So hard in a coma.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_00: So hard in a coma.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_00: Like he's commering like really hard.
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 1:06:06SPEAKER_00: I thought you meant something else.
- 1:06:08SPEAKER_00: Oh, no, no, no, no.
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_00: No.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_00: Deleted scene.
- 1:06:14SPEAKER_00: Because of what happens next.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_00: Well, like they introduce okay.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_00: This is one of Victoria's comedic genius moments.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_00: She's at the end of the bed, Jerry's the closest, Mel's in the middle, and they're like, what do we do?
- 1:06:27SPEAKER_00: And they're like, we'll just talk to him.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_00: So Jerry goes, Hi Max, I'm Jerry.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_00: And then Mel goes, and I and I'm Mel.
- 1:06:36SPEAKER_00: And then Victoria just goes, and I'm Victoria Malcolm.
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_00: And it's so funny.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_00: It's quoted all of the time.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_00: Just like I say it maybe a couple times a month when people are like, especially if it's like if I'm doing like a panel show or like a night, and like several people introduced one after the other.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_00: You're like, this is so and so, and this is so and so.
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_00: And then before they can introduce me, and I go, and I'm Victoria Malcolm, nobody gets it except everyone looking at you like you're insane.
- 1:07:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but it's not for them, it's for me and for Victoria.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_00: And then the boy still doesn't wake up, and they're like, What do we do?
- 1:07:14SPEAKER_00: Because they take it upon themselves to like end this boy's coma, one way or another.
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_00: And so they were like, I don't know what to do.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_00: Can we sing?
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_00: What do we do?
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_00: And then Victoria just goes, Well, maybe you should take your top off, Jerry.
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_00: And then the boy instantly wakes up at the thought of Jerry Halliwell's boobies.
- 1:07:29SPEAKER_00: Uh and it and do you know what it's a reference to?
- 1:07:34SPEAKER_01: No, what?
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_01: It's a reference to um her nude photo shoot before she was in the Spicers.
- 1:07:41SPEAKER_01: Her glamour modeling and turkey.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_01: And I can't imagine she was too pleased with that line.
- 1:07:50SPEAKER_00: Oh, well, okay, but it uh because of all of the press around her at the time and all the tabloids and everything that was being said about her, she did kind of get labelled as like the busty spice because everywhere that she would dress, she always just happened to be wearing like a dress that did not cover them properly, and she was always like on the on the brink of spilling out.
- 1:08:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_00: Uh and it's yeah, they really leaned into that.
- 1:08:16SPEAKER_00: And again, she said she wanted to do more deep acting, she didn't just want to be like the booby one.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_00: And what did they do?
- 1:08:22SPEAKER_00: They made her the booby one.
- 1:08:24SPEAKER_01: Do you know what she went on to act in?
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_01: Have you seen like anything else?
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_01: Because I've seen one other film she's been in.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_01: Oh, I I don't even know if I've seen it, I'm aware, I'm just aware of it.
- 1:08:34SPEAKER_01: And it is Fat Slags.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_00: Uh I've not seen that, no.
- 1:08:48SPEAKER_00: Uh okay.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_00: And you know what that is?
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_00: I don't.
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_01: It hasn't come up in my search history.
- 1:08:56SPEAKER_01: It is a movie based on these comic book characters.
- 1:09:01SPEAKER_01: Called Fat Slag.
- 1:09:03SPEAKER_01: Called Fat Slags.
- 1:09:05SPEAKER_01: She's not one of the leads.
- 1:09:08SPEAKER_01: So she's not one of the fat slags.
- 1:09:10SPEAKER_01: She's not one of the she's not one of the fat slags.
- 1:09:12SPEAKER_01: Does she play someone who is fat or a slag?
- 1:09:15SPEAKER_01: She looking at this, she plays some called Page.
- 1:09:18SPEAKER_01: But it also stars Jerry O'Connell, Anthony Head, Naomi Campbell.
- 1:09:25SPEAKER_01: Oh wow.
- 1:09:26SPEAKER_01: Les Dennis.
- 1:09:30SPEAKER_01: Dolph London.
- 1:09:34SPEAKER_00: Oh my goodness.
- 1:09:35SPEAKER_00: Naomi Campbell and Les Dennis sharing a billing like we always hoped they would.
- 1:09:43SPEAKER_00: Uh well, I know what I'm gonna watch after this then.
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_01: If you can find it, I'm pretty sure it does not exist anywhere now.
- 1:09:49SPEAKER_01: I'll find it.
- 1:09:50SPEAKER_01: Oh, I'll find it.
- 1:09:53SPEAKER_01: I remember it coming out at the time in 2004.
- 1:09:58SPEAKER_00: This must be like the deep acting that she wanted to do.
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_01: Because I'm looking at the rest of the movie.
- 1:10:05SPEAKER_01: Oh, and she was also in crank high voltage.
- 1:10:09SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's the is that the Jason Statham thing where he has to keep like electrocuting himself in order to stay alive.
- 1:10:15SPEAKER_01: And she plays Karen Chelios, which is either his sister or his wife, I'm not entirely sure.
- 1:10:21SPEAKER_00: Could be both.
- 1:10:26SPEAKER_01: But that's all she's that's literally the three movies she's been in.
- 1:10:30SPEAKER_01: So did not go on to do some so much deep acting that she No.
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_00: The only the only person I know who did do some acting was Emma Bunton because she had a regular role on Absolutely Fabulous when it was brought back.
- 1:10:47SPEAKER_00: Jennifer Saunders and Jennifer Saunders wrote her into it.
- 1:10:50SPEAKER_00: Ah, and I wonder if they met during this.
- 1:10:53SPEAKER_00: This is a fun story.
- 1:10:54SPEAKER_00: French and Saunders, like in the 90s, met the Spice Girls before they were like properly the Spice Girls, and thought they were like fun, but also like a bit delusional.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_00: And you can't really say that they were wrong, because they were like they were at the time, they were like, Oh yeah, we met them in like a cafe or something, and we asked them like, Oh, so what do you do?
- 1:11:15SPEAKER_00: And they're like, We're a girl band, and we're gonna be the biggest girl band ever.
- 1:11:19SPEAKER_00: And they were the cafe scene in this movie.
- 1:11:22SPEAKER_00: It's literally the cafe scene, except French and Sworders aren't there.
- 1:11:24SPEAKER_00: Oh god, oh god, when they have like their emotional flashback moment to where they to where they were like, We've got this song, sorry we can't afford like to pay for our bill, but like just put it on the table.
- 1:11:36SPEAKER_01: The£1.50 they get charged for their five Ts.
- 1:11:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, for their five T's and Baker Sani's, and then uh and then this is supposedly where they came up with wannabe.
- 1:11:45SPEAKER_00: They didn't write the song.
- 1:11:48SPEAKER_00: No.
- 1:11:49SPEAKER_00: No.
- 1:11:49SPEAKER_00: But Melcy does do a backflip.
- 1:11:51SPEAKER_00: So she does, yeah.
- 1:11:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_00: There are layers, nuances to the scene.
- 1:11:56SPEAKER_01: And their friend is there saying, do the song, do the song for Yeah, yeah.
- 1:12:01SPEAKER_00: You just it just to be clear, of this friend, we know nothing other than her first name, that her boyfriend has left her, that she is pregnant, and she is a friend of the spice girls.
- 1:12:13SPEAKER_00: We learn nothing else about her, absolutely nothing, not even the flashback.
- 1:12:17SPEAKER_00: She is she literally exists to say the spice girls are quite good, aren't they?
- 1:12:22SPEAKER_00: I like them, they're my friend.
- 1:12:24SPEAKER_00: Biggest fan.
- 1:12:24SPEAKER_00: And that's it.
- 1:12:25SPEAKER_00: Biggest fan, and that's it.
- 1:12:27SPEAKER_00: Nothing else, nothing else.
- 1:12:30SPEAKER_00: The like the man who takes the photos of them through like pops up in the toilet, has more like backstory than she does.
- 1:12:39SPEAKER_00: It and it's quite emotional as well.
- 1:12:42SPEAKER_00: This woman, what's the point?
- 1:12:44SPEAKER_00: What's the point?
- 1:12:45SPEAKER_01: What's the point of her?
- 1:12:46SPEAKER_01: I do, I do not understand.
- 1:12:47SPEAKER_01: Is it supposed to be like that anyone could place themselves as her?
- 1:12:51SPEAKER_01: Is that what it or am I thinking it into it too much?
- 1:12:54SPEAKER_00: Uh it's probably both, if I'm honest.
- 1:12:56SPEAKER_00: I mean, what you've said is a very good theory, but it's also like I wouldn't worry about it.
- 1:13:01SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't worry about it.
- 1:13:02SPEAKER_00: I don't think old Bob Spears or whatever his name was was like, yeah, oh, I wonder if people really like appreciate her backstory.
- 1:13:10SPEAKER_00: They won't because she doesn't have one.
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:13:14SPEAKER_01: But it's very much oh wait, I'm looking at I'm also looking up the how many songs are in this as well.
- 1:13:18SPEAKER_01: There's one, two, three, six, seven, eight, nine.
- 1:13:21SPEAKER_01: So it's eighteen songs in this movie.
- 1:13:23SPEAKER_00: I think they get pretty much like all of the heavy hitters off the first two albums.
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_00: Plus like a few X.
- 1:13:32SPEAKER_01: I feel like they get everything in.
- 1:13:33SPEAKER_01: Plus I'm the Leader of the Gang, plus My Boy Lollipop.
- 1:13:38SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 1:13:39SPEAKER_00: But they don't sing, they don't sing My Boy Lollipop.
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_00: That that's the song that the children nearly drowned in.
- 1:13:45SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 1:13:48SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 1:13:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:13:50SPEAKER_01: Um but the rest of them are all their own songs from the looks of it.
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_01: Um But yeah, they open with Too Much, they and they end with Spice Up Your Life.
- 1:14:01SPEAKER_01: Or there's like The Lady is a Vamp closing titles, it says.
- 1:14:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, which is an underrated song, which they do they did at the live concert, and everyone was kind of like, What is this?
- 1:14:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's how I felt.
- 1:14:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:14:15SPEAKER_00: Uh but it's not a bad song.
- 1:14:17SPEAKER_00: It's not bad.
- 1:14:18SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 1:14:20SPEAKER_01: Do you have a favorite song with this?
- 1:14:23SPEAKER_00: Um or a favorite song in this, even I do like um the song that they opened with uh Too much.
- 1:14:36SPEAKER_00: Too much.
- 1:14:37SPEAKER_00: Um because of Mel C.
- 1:14:41SPEAKER_00: So like any time where there's like really difficult bits to sing, they would always give that to Mel C.
- 1:14:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:14:46SPEAKER_00: Um But I also I do like giving you everything, which is where we first are introduced to their pregnant friend.
- 1:14:52SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 1:14:53SPEAKER_00: Um and I like Spice Up your life as well.
- 1:14:56SPEAKER_00: I like I like most of the Uptempo ones.
- 1:14:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, though I think the Uptempo ones are the ones I most enjoy as well, actually.
- 1:15:05SPEAKER_01: But again, like too much is fun.
- 1:15:07SPEAKER_01: Too much is fun.
- 1:15:08SPEAKER_01: Too much is fun, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:15:10SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, okay, so like we've pretty much kind of delved, like worked our way through this movie.
- 1:15:18SPEAKER_01: I don't know if there's anything that you've that you want to speak about that we've kind of that missed out I don't know, have we missed anything?
- 1:15:26SPEAKER_00: Well, um Academy Voters.
- 1:15:31SPEAKER_00: Uh I put forward the case to posthumously award not posthumously, she's not dead.
- 1:15:38SPEAKER_00: She's not dead, to retroactively not just nominate her, but award her an Oscar.
- 1:15:46SPEAKER_00: Do you know what?
- 1:15:46SPEAKER_00: Just give her any odd Oscar that you've got lying around.
- 1:15:50SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's not for best supporting actress, maybe it's for best sound design.
- 1:15:54SPEAKER_00: She she did sing a little bit, not much, but a little bit in all of the songs.
- 1:16:00SPEAKER_00: Uh, or best cinema cinematography for when she points.
- 1:16:04SPEAKER_00: She does it, she just she points at just for Victoria Beckham.
- 1:16:08SPEAKER_00: Just for Victoria Beckham, or just for her hand.
- 1:16:11SPEAKER_00: Give her hand an Oscar.
- 1:16:13SPEAKER_00: Um I just I just think also knowing what she went on to do, uh, she which was like, I mean, I guess not much, but like she any time that she was interviewed or when she had like a flutter with reality TV, I actually thought she was like really funny.
- 1:16:33SPEAKER_00: So I just think I think maybe we should get her to an open mic.
- 1:16:37SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:16:38SPEAKER_00: I feel like she can handle it.
- 1:16:41SPEAKER_01: That would be so funny.
- 1:16:44SPEAKER_00: Would you not listen to like a whole like set just about her?
- 1:16:49SPEAKER_00: I don't I don't even know what she would talk about.
- 1:16:50SPEAKER_00: Maybe she wouldn't even talk about the Spice Girls.
- 1:16:52SPEAKER_00: Maybe she'll just be like, don't you hate it when you can't go to the gym because all of your shoes are uh wedges or something?
- 1:17:00SPEAKER_00: Like she she she she could talk about her fashion line, she could I don't know, she could talk about like what her what her method is for acting.
- 1:17:11SPEAKER_00: Um and it's probably something along the lines of I get the script and I say the words, and it's very like wow, simple, taking it back to basics, very much like Robert Redford.
- 1:17:22SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, it's it's people often say she's the Robert Redford of the Spice Girls.
- 1:17:27SPEAKER_00: And who are the other Spice Girls?
- 1:17:29SPEAKER_00: Not Robert Redford.
- 1:17:30SPEAKER_00: There's only one.
- 1:17:31SPEAKER_00: Um I just think she's an unsung hero of the film, but also the they knew from the beginning the film is not a film to be taken seriously, it's an absolute cash grab, but like it's like I'm happy for them to grab my cash.
- 1:17:47SPEAKER_01: And they have done many times from the sounds of it.
- 1:17:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, more than I'm proud of, probably.
- 1:17:53SPEAKER_01: But yeah.
- 1:17:55SPEAKER_01: Okay, so let's let's move on to the final segment then, which is um the reverse of this, which is a movie that you think is well, is well reviewed and loved by critics that you actually think is a bad movie.
- 1:18:08SPEAKER_00: I would probably have to say um any film that isn't Spice World.
- 1:18:13SPEAKER_00: Um Wow All the ones you suggested before just all of them.
- 1:18:19SPEAKER_00: Um I I will have to have a think because I think I'm I'm one of those people that like if I hear too much about uh the hype of a film then and then I eventually end up watching it, I go alright.
- 1:18:35SPEAKER_00: Um what films have I seen that were like well reviewed?
- 1:18:40SPEAKER_00: I I I I think of like Inception is like a popular film, and it it I think it people found it confusing, but like on the whole, critics like people enjoyed it.
- 1:18:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's yeah.
- 1:18:54SPEAKER_00: Um we can talk about Inception if you want.
- 1:18:58SPEAKER_00: Maybe Inception.
- 1:18:59SPEAKER_00: I mean there's like there's probably a few.
- 1:19:02SPEAKER_00: Do you know what actually?
- 1:19:04SPEAKER_00: Uh no, I changed my mind, but I'm trying to think if this if this film was well reviewed.
- 1:19:10SPEAKER_00: But the greatest showman?
- 1:19:13SPEAKER_01: It was not well reviewed, but it did very, very well with the public.
- 1:19:16SPEAKER_00: Can I because I think I had a more perhaps a more visceral response.
- 1:19:23SPEAKER_00: Or okay.
- 1:19:24SPEAKER_01: We can talk about the greatest showman if you want.
- 1:19:26SPEAKER_00: La La Land.
- 1:19:27SPEAKER_00: I'll say La La Land.
- 1:19:29SPEAKER_01: It comes up so much.
- 1:19:30SPEAKER_00: Oh fuck, okay, no, we'll just show you.
- 1:19:32SPEAKER_01: No, we can do it, we can do it, we can do it.
- 1:19:34SPEAKER_01: If you want to talk about La La Land, we can talk about La La Land.
- 1:19:37SPEAKER_01: I think it's so funny how many people like are coming on and be like, fuck La La Land.
- 1:19:42SPEAKER_00: Well, okay, but I'll try and think of like a fun reason why I think it's not a good film.
- 1:19:46SPEAKER_01: Greatest showman has 57%, so it's like not well.
- 1:19:49SPEAKER_00: Let's do La La Land then.
- 1:19:51SPEAKER_00: I think it has to be like because that's the last film I remember watching, think uh knowing only the hype and thinking.
- 1:19:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:20:00SPEAKER_00: It's fine.
- 1:20:01SPEAKER_00: Again, same uh way I felt when I was at the Spice Girls concert and I couldn't really hear them sing.
- 1:20:06SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's just me.
- 1:20:08SPEAKER_00: I feel like all of the when they sing, it's very quiet, and you can't I and I don't know why.
- 1:20:13SPEAKER_00: And I know for a while afterwards this film Ryan Gosling felt like he saved jazz, but like a long time he's like, I am jazz.
- 1:20:22SPEAKER_00: Jazz was made to be saved by white people.
- 1:20:24SPEAKER_00: Of course it was, Ryan.
- 1:20:26SPEAKER_00: Um I it made me confused as to like why hang on.
- 1:20:34SPEAKER_00: There's a nicer way of saying this.
- 1:20:36SPEAKER_00: Uh I can say it in a horrible way.
- 1:20:41SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:20:43SPEAKER_00: I can picture the type of person who would watch this film and think it's magical and and wonderful.
- 1:20:53SPEAKER_00: In the words of Emma Stone winning the Oscar for this film, saying it's a film for dreamers.
- 1:20:58SPEAKER_00: I can so perfectly picture that type of person and I would not get along with that person.
- 1:21:06SPEAKER_00: Yes, exactly.
- 1:21:07SPEAKER_00: Or just like, oh my god, this film is just like about I can so relate to just like chasing my dreams and just like enjoying what I do no matter what the hurdles are, and like relationships will come and go, but ultimately what's the most important to me just really spoke to me.
- 1:21:23SPEAKER_00: And I'm like I I d I shush, just shush.
- 1:21:29SPEAKER_00: I know I don't I I can't agree with you.
- 1:21:31SPEAKER_00: No, no, no, no, no.
- 1:21:32SPEAKER_00: And yeah, and I don't think as like leads in it, I can think of other films that Emma Stone has been in for sure.
- 1:21:41SPEAKER_00: I'd be like, okay, she's good in this, but this one I was just like okay, she's singing, dancing, and acting.
- 1:21:48SPEAKER_00: Those are three things that she kind of does okay at consistently throughout the film.
- 1:21:52SPEAKER_00: I don't think it was a whole Oscar.
- 1:21:56SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 1:21:56SPEAKER_01: I I kind of agree with that.
- 1:21:58SPEAKER_01: I don't I think she was fine.
- 1:22:00SPEAKER_00: I think and also people kind of yeah, they were fine.
- 1:22:04SPEAKER_00: They would that's it.
- 1:22:05SPEAKER_00: That's exactly the word.
- 1:22:07SPEAKER_00: They were fine, it was fine, but like none of the songs if it's a musical, then that I think there are two things that have to be true about it that make me enjoy it as a musical.
- 1:22:21SPEAKER_00: One, it can't be a sung-through musical like Lay Miz uh hate it.
- 1:22:26SPEAKER_00: Second, the songs have to like be fun songs to sing outside of the context of the film.
- 1:22:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:22:33SPEAKER_00: And none of them are.
- 1:22:35SPEAKER_00: Not a one.
- 1:22:36SPEAKER_00: There's like the City of Stars one, but that's like a real like I don't like that song.
- 1:22:42SPEAKER_00: It's a real like sad wank of a song.
- 1:22:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:22:47SPEAKER_00: Just like a very tearful one.
- 1:22:49SPEAKER_01: I will actually say that my my favourite song in this movie is the opening song.
- 1:22:54SPEAKER_00: Because it's the most it's the most bubbly and joyful.
- 1:22:56SPEAKER_01: It's the most bubbly and joyful, and interestingly, then neither of them are in it.
- 1:23:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:23:03SPEAKER_00: Because then it goes to but again, it it it's a musical.
- 1:23:08SPEAKER_00: Music musical theatre people are trained to sing with such good diction that you can understand absolutely everything that they're saying because this that you have to, so you understand the plot.
- 1:23:22SPEAKER_00: This is why I can't get through Hamilton, because there's so many words.
- 1:23:26SPEAKER_00: There's so many words, and I go, what?
- 1:23:28SPEAKER_00: Sorry, what is this?
- 1:23:29SPEAKER_00: So they're in America now.
- 1:23:30SPEAKER_00: So are they who is that?
- 1:23:32SPEAKER_00: Right, and their sisters.
- 1:23:34SPEAKER_00: Oh, she's dead.
- 1:23:35SPEAKER_00: Oh, she's moved.
- 1:23:36SPEAKER_00: Oh, they're both dead.
- 1:23:37SPEAKER_01: Oh, you're gonna hate in the heights.
- 1:23:39SPEAKER_00: Oh god, but again, if it but I if you have to like I have to be able to hear every word.
- 1:23:47SPEAKER_01: And so In the Heights is easier, but I still think I have a feeling you're gonna hate it now.
- 1:23:52SPEAKER_00: Maybe I'm just a bit maybe I'm going deaf.
- 1:23:54SPEAKER_00: I mean, you just hate musicals.
- 1:23:56SPEAKER_00: Maybe I hate musical.
- 1:23:57SPEAKER_00: Well, there's some that I like, like Waitress, I think that's a great musical.
- 1:24:01SPEAKER_00: Uh uh Wicked, I think is a great musical.
- 1:24:05SPEAKER_00: Um so it's not just the fact that the other ones are big musicals.
- 1:24:08SPEAKER_00: It's not the reason you hate it.
- 1:24:09SPEAKER_00: No, no, no.
- 1:24:10SPEAKER_00: I like Chicago.
- 1:24:11SPEAKER_00: I actually like the film version of Chicago better than the stage version of Chicago.
- 1:24:15SPEAKER_00: Because if you see the stage version of Chicago, it's a bit like it's a bit understated, and it's like it's every clip that I watch, it's literally just like a woman in some black place going skatoosh and then doing some like erotic dancing.
- 1:24:29SPEAKER_00: I'm like, okay.
- 1:24:30SPEAKER_01: I've only seen the film version, I've never seen the stage version.
- 1:24:33SPEAKER_00: Cat Catherine Zeus Jones in that film is is is really quite wonderful.
- 1:24:37SPEAKER_00: I quite I really enjoy that film, but anyway, that so that's a good film.
- 1:24:41SPEAKER_00: La La Land?
- 1:24:42SPEAKER_00: La La Land.
- 1:24:43SPEAKER_00: It's not Chicago, no.
- 1:24:45SPEAKER_00: I mean it literally isn't, it's a different geographical place.
- 1:24:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but uh yeah, I just it it it's it's it's overhyped and massively overhyped does not satisfy.
- 1:24:55SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:24:56SPEAKER_01: And one thing that made me so happy, I bet on I put a bet on Moonlight to win the Oscar, and I and I won.
- 1:25:04SPEAKER_01: And I put on a bet on it, I put on a bet on it like three months in advance as well.
- 1:25:08SPEAKER_00: But for a moment, for a moment you think Oh for a moment I was like and then I found out I won a hundred pounds and I was like, yes.
- 1:25:17SPEAKER_01: That's quite a large bet to place.
- 1:25:19SPEAKER_01: Oh my goodness.
- 1:25:20SPEAKER_01: Oh, I put I put like five pounds on back when Moonlight was not expected.
- 1:25:24SPEAKER_01: And it with the odds with that white.
- 1:25:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, why this was like way before I got the hype around it.
- 1:25:32SPEAKER_01: Well, there you go.
- 1:25:33SPEAKER_01: Because I was just like, oh, this is a great movie, I love it, I'm gonna put a bet on this.
- 1:25:36SPEAKER_01: You saw that hand job on the beach and you were like, this is gonna go places.
- 1:25:40unknown: Yeah.
- 1:25:40SPEAKER_01: And then I was like, oh, then it got later and later, and I was like, of course, of course La La Land's gonna win.
- 1:25:46SPEAKER_00: Eh.
- 1:25:48SPEAKER_00: Eh, yeah.
- 1:25:49SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, so I guess it would be yeah, I guess La La Land.
- 1:25:53SPEAKER_00: No, well reviewed, but disappointing.
- 1:25:57SPEAKER_01: I think people are gr starting to grow to dislike it more and more as well, though.
- 1:26:02SPEAKER_01: As evidenced by everyone coming on and picking it.
- 1:26:05SPEAKER_00: Right, but isn't that fun?
- 1:26:06SPEAKER_00: Because I would say Spice World poorly reviewed at the time, but now sort of like a cult favourite.
- 1:26:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:26:15SPEAKER_00: Uh in the same vein of Showgirls burlesque, all of the other probably like every other film that's on this podcast.
- 1:26:22SPEAKER_00: And yet La La Land going the other way.
- 1:26:26SPEAKER_00: Like, and I think there's something about films that were so obviously Oscar baity that reduces your desire to re-watch them.
- 1:26:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:26:35SPEAKER_00: So uh because you can so obviously see, like, oh, this was they've put this scene in, so this person's got like a real good shot at an Oscar.
- 1:26:44SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:26:45SPEAKER_01: I saw Lala Land once at once in the cinema and then once at home, and then yeah.
- 1:26:50SPEAKER_01: I enjoyed it more at the cinema than I did at home, and I'm just like, I'm not going back to it, I don't think.
- 1:26:56SPEAKER_01: Fair enough.
- 1:26:57SPEAKER_00: I saw it once at home, and that was enough.
- 1:27:01SPEAKER_01: That's all it took.
- 1:27:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:27:03SPEAKER_01: That's yeah, that seems about right.
- 1:27:07SPEAKER_01: And then go and watch Spice World instead.
- 1:27:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like rinse the taste out a little bit, yeah.
- 1:27:13SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 1:27:14SPEAKER_01: If you're the audience members like listening to anyone listening to this, go and watch Spice World instead of La La Land.
- 1:27:18SPEAKER_01: It's more fun, you'll enjoy it more.
- 1:27:21SPEAKER_01: Please do.
- 1:27:21SPEAKER_01: Also, the music's better.
- 1:27:23SPEAKER_01: The music is better.
- 1:27:23SPEAKER_01: The music is definitely better in Spiceworld.
- 1:27:25SPEAKER_01: It has to be, right?
- 1:27:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:27:27SPEAKER_01: The music is so much more fun in Spiceworld and stands the test of time.
- 1:27:32SPEAKER_00: It really does.
- 1:27:33SPEAKER_00: I think we've proven that.
- 1:27:35SPEAKER_01: Well, this has been great.
- 1:27:36SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much for coming on.
- 1:27:38SPEAKER_01: Um, thank you for having me.
- 1:27:40SPEAKER_01: How can we find you online?
- 1:27:41SPEAKER_01: And do you have anything you'd like to promote at the moment?
- 1:27:43SPEAKER_00: Uh, you can find me online.
- 1:27:45SPEAKER_00: My my my social media handle is Mr.
- 1:27:48SPEAKER_00: Sam Lake, uh, but Mr.
- 1:27:50SPEAKER_00: is spelled M R.
- 1:27:51SPEAKER_00: So when you write it all down, it looks like it says Mrs.
- 1:27:54SPEAKER_00: Amlarkey.
- 1:27:56SPEAKER_01: I do see I do think that all the time.
- 1:27:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I get but it's too late to change it.
- 1:28:00SPEAKER_00: And so I don't read it as I read I read it as Mrs.
- 1:28:03SPEAKER_00: Mrs.
- 1:28:03SPEAKER_00: Sam Lake all the time.
- 1:28:04SPEAKER_00: Mrs.
- 1:28:05SPEAKER_00: Sam Lake, which hey, that's that's that's fine.
- 1:28:08SPEAKER_00: That's absolutely fine.
- 1:28:10SPEAKER_00: Um what do I want to plug?
- 1:28:12SPEAKER_00: I have a podcast, it's called I've Had a Rose, Let's Talk About Feelings.

- 1:28:27SPEAKER_00: It's on all wherever you get your podcasts.
- 1:28:29SPEAKER_01: Go straight from this and go listen to it.
- 1:28:31SPEAKER_00: Go straight from this.

- 1:28:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:28:54SPEAKER_00: Um which and I think it's going out to other places as well, but like keep an eye on Dave for that.
- 1:29:00SPEAKER_00: It will come out at some point in the channel.
- 1:29:03SPEAKER_00: Um both.
- 1:29:04SPEAKER_01: Both Dave Soundshift Dave.
- 1:29:06SPEAKER_00: Keep an eye on both.
- 1:29:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:29:08SPEAKER_01: You don't know when that's gonna come out though.
- 1:29:10SPEAKER_00: It's probably gonna be out by the time this is released.
- 1:29:12SPEAKER_00: It might be.
- 1:29:13SPEAKER_00: If it is out, it's called the Comedy Guide to Life.
- 1:29:16SPEAKER_00: Uh and uh there's a there's like uh a ton of like really uh really really cool people in it.
- 1:29:22SPEAKER_00: Um looks like it's gonna be a lot of fun.
- 1:29:24SPEAKER_00: Um it yes, it will be.
- 1:29:26SPEAKER_00: I was there, so I know it was.
- 1:29:29SPEAKER_01: I kept seeing behind the scenes things of it and being very jealous.
- 1:29:34SPEAKER_01: Um Ed, because all we did was talk about you, to be fair.
- 1:29:37SPEAKER_01: We did.
- 1:29:37SPEAKER_01: Would not shut off about it.
- 1:29:39SPEAKER_01: Pretty sure it's prior to you know who knowing who I was as well.
- 1:29:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but I was just like, I think I I think you're someone I knew off Twitter, and I was just like, do you know this Yannis guy?
- 1:29:48SPEAKER_00: I mean, what do we think about him?
- 1:29:51SPEAKER_00: Cancelled, cancelled.
- 1:29:52SPEAKER_00: Oh cancelled, okay, cool.
- 1:29:56SPEAKER_01: But yeah, thank you so just to lead off me being cancelled, thank you so much.
- 1:30:01SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 1:30:02SPEAKER_00: It's been very fun, it's been a very indulgent experience for me, and I appreciate that.
- 1:30:07SPEAKER_01: That's all this is, just bringing on people to talk in in their indulgent ways about uh any movie they love.
- 1:30:15SPEAKER_00: Well, there we go, that's what I just did.
- 1:30:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:30:17SPEAKER_01: So thank you very much.
- 1:30:18SPEAKER_00: Oh, you're very welcome, thank you.
- 1:30:20SPEAKER_01: That's the end of the podcast.
- 1:30:22SPEAKER_01: If you enjoyed it, please leave us a review and let us a like tunes and then making more episodes.
- 1:30:26SPEAKER_01: And I'll see you next week for more movies that critics got blog.
