- 0:39SPEAKER_02: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talking Tech Podcast.
- 0:42SPEAKER_02: My name is Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: Tristan, how you doing today, man?
- 0:48SPEAKER_03: I'll tell you how I'm doing today.
- 0:50SPEAKER_03: I'm feeling like a winner.
- 0:51SPEAKER_03: That's what I'm feeling.
- 0:53SPEAKER_03: Feeling like a winner, baby.
- 0:55SPEAKER_02: Feeling it, Mr.
- 0:56SPEAKER_02: Krabs.
- 0:57SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech wins a football game.
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: We beat West Virginia 34-27.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech's a winner.
- 1:06SPEAKER_02: We moved to 2-3 on the air, one and three in Big 12 play.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: Tristan, what's the significance of this win, man?
- 1:13SPEAKER_03: Man, I I like I said last on the last plot that this was a must win for Matt Wells because it really felt like he was losing a lot of the fan base.
- 1:21SPEAKER_03: And I think he really recaptured uh a good swath of the fans with a good home win because this team was three and one coming into Lubbock, and we went ahead and derailed that train.
- 1:32SPEAKER_03: And that makes two in a row, Matt Wells has dunked on West Virginia.
- 1:37SPEAKER_03: That guy knows how to beat the Mountaineers.
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: Yes, he does.
- 1:40SPEAKER_03: And I think it's time to play the song.
- 1:44SPEAKER_03: Steven, play that song, baby.
- 1:46SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah.
- 2:05SPEAKER_03: We're winners.
- 2:06SPEAKER_03: Man, that feels good to hear again.
- 2:09SPEAKER_03: I tell you what the biggest takeaway from that game was, though, Steven.
- 2:12SPEAKER_03: It was, did you know that Jarrett Dagey is from Lubbock?
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: No, I did.
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: You know, I heard it a few hundred times during the broadcast, but I I still I'm not sure.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: Did you know that he wanted to play for Texas Tech?
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: I think I he wanted to play for he went to school in Lubbock.
- 2:31SPEAKER_03: Is that true?
- 2:34SPEAKER_03: Had the announcers not said it 50 plus times, I don't think I would have known.
- 2:40SPEAKER_03: The announcers were brutal with that stat.
- 2:44SPEAKER_03: They wanted that to happen so bad.
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, the last like few drives for West Virginia, they wanted Jared Dageie to pull it out and come back to his hometown to the team that did not recruit him, to the team that slept on him and go win, but he didn't because they lost, and we won.
- 3:01SPEAKER_03: It's seriously like we're gonna discount, you know, you can discount Kingsbury for a lot of things, but we're never gonna discount him for his his eye in quarterbacks.
- 3:08SPEAKER_03: And this kid obviously didn't have it, you know.
- 3:10SPEAKER_03: He ends up going to Bowling Green.
- 3:12SPEAKER_03: Um, and now he's at West Virginia and loses to his hometown team.
- 3:15SPEAKER_03: I mean, I'm not ragging on the kid, I mean he's he's he's doing the best with what he has, so good for him.
- 3:19SPEAKER_03: But it's my god, those announcers were uh I was losing my mind with how often I kept saying that.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and Dagey had a had a pretty, I think, subpar game overall.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: He overthrew a lot of guys, he underthrew a lot of guys, he just wasn't on target, and I think that's really just the quarterback that he is, you know.
- 3:37SPEAKER_02: Unfortunately, uh, if it wasn't for him playing Texas Tech, I would root for him because he is a Dae.
- 3:43SPEAKER_02: But um, you know, he I I just think he a and he had some bad receivers too, so you can't really blame him for the drops that they've experienced the last uh it seems like all year, according to West Virginia fans.
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: Um, and then obviously the fumbles and stuff like that.
- 3:58SPEAKER_02: But uh Tristan, why don't we get into the good of this game?
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: Because it was announced before before the game by Don Williams that we were missing a lot of guys.
- 4:07SPEAKER_02: I mean, out of kind of out of nowhere.
- 4:09SPEAKER_02: You know, we uh Keyshawn Carter missed uh Dalton Rigdon, who they announced or who Matt Wells thought was gonna play, did not end up playing.
- 4:17SPEAKER_02: Um McClain Mannix, and then probably the most surprising one was TJ Vasher missing kind of out of nowhere.
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: We didn't see him get hurt last, you know, last week or or the or I guess the week prior.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: And you know, we're coming off a bye, and it you know, injury came out of nowhere.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: But uh Nick McCann on the defensive line, Seth Collins is gone for the year, and then offensive lineman Zach Adams.
- 4:38SPEAKER_02: We missed a lot of guys this game.
- 4:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I got really nervous whenever I saw that release, and it was like shortly before the game that we got to see all this.
- 4:46SPEAKER_03: So um that was a little nerve-wracking to see all us having to rely on the youth like that, because obviously you want experience when you're playing conference foes.
- 4:55SPEAKER_03: So those youngins went out there and got it, though.
- 4:58SPEAKER_03: We snapped a six-game losing streak in this conference with all those young guys making it happen, and I couldn't be happier with the way they went out there and did it.
- 5:06SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: And we're gonna get to the Columbia magic in a bit, but the young receivers were absolutely amazing this game.
- 5:14SPEAKER_02: You know, Miles Price, huge game, seven receptions, 79 yards.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: He led the team.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: Uh true freshman, we're talking about, and then another true freshman, Trey Cleveland, who came in and caught that touchdown pass from Columbia.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: Unbelievable for these guys just to step in and automatically, you know, be very good and and do their jobs correctly.
- 5:34SPEAKER_02: Uh, I will say Jalen Polk was another true freshman receiver that we got in there.
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: He's the guy that fumbled at the very beginning of the half.
- 5:41SPEAKER_02: He's gonna have to work on that.
- 5:42SPEAKER_02: But again, you know, true freshman receiver out there, you know, they're gonna make mistakes like that.
- 5:46SPEAKER_02: But uh honestly, I was so surprised with how good the young receiving core did.
- 5:51SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 5:52SPEAKER_03: And I mean, I don't want to go ahead and just plow into the uh Columbia stuff, but man, he had a connection with those guys, you know.
- 5:58SPEAKER_03: He it still happens because you know you probably were thinking that uh Columbia was gonna be uh playing with some of these veterans that you know through practice and he was gonna start, but man, he just made it work, you know.
- 6:09SPEAKER_03: And I the whole offense looked like they were practicing together for weeks, yeah.
- 6:14SPEAKER_03: So it was it was awesome to watch whether they were a receiver or a running back, and I think that's just the kind of quarterback he is.
- 6:22SPEAKER_02: He doesn't have his favorites, you know.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: Uh he has he the difference between him and Bowman are Columbi finds everybody on the field.
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: Bowman looks for his guys, you know.
- 6:32SPEAKER_02: Bowman looks for Basher, he looks for Keyshawn Carter, he looks for uh Zukama.
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: Now Columbi finds guys like Miles.
- 6:39SPEAKER_02: He even found him when he came into the uh Iowa State game.
- 6:42SPEAKER_02: He finds a bunch of different guys, and that's so nice to see because when you look for three specific dudes on the field, I mean you could see one guy wide open and Columbia finds him, but Bowman doesn't.
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: So that's what makes Columbia so good, I think.
- 6:58SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, man.
- 6:59SPEAKER_03: Should we just go ahead and get into this Columbi magic talk?
- 7:01SPEAKER_03: It's it sounds like we're just wanting to do it what aren't aren't diving into this.
- 7:06SPEAKER_03: So let's do it, man.
- 7:07SPEAKER_03: I mean, Columbi Magic, Heisman Henry, Hollywood Henry, District of Columbi.
- 7:12SPEAKER_03: Find your favorite nickname.
- 7:13SPEAKER_03: We got a bunch of them, but man, that guy, the way this man just methodically moves down the field, he just finds a way, you know.
- 7:21SPEAKER_03: This guy refuses to go three and out, and that's what I love about him.
- 7:24SPEAKER_03: His time of possession with the ball was awesome because we were getting really tired of watching uh Bowman's offense go out within a minute, you know.
- 7:33SPEAKER_03: It's but this man refuses, whether it's passing or using his legs, he makes the right call.
- 7:39SPEAKER_03: Everything seems so deliberate and always looks like he's he makes the right decision nearly every time.
- 7:44SPEAKER_03: And that's what you like to see out of a quarterback.
- 7:46SPEAKER_02: And unfortunately, I don't think he's gonna get the recognition he deserves because a lot of people that just look at the stat line are gonna say, Oh, you know, was he that good?
- 7:54SPEAKER_02: He was that good.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: He had two, he only had 209 total yards and two total touchdowns.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: But there were six key plays that he made that that were just unbelievable.
- 8:03SPEAKER_02: First off, the fourth and goal rush touchdown at the beginning of the game, you know, reaching over the goal line.
- 8:08SPEAKER_02: Great play from him.
- 8:10SPEAKER_02: The Miles Price, 44-yard completion on third and four at the beginning of the game to lead that drive.
- 8:15SPEAKER_02: He had a third and seven scramble for 13 yards that got the touchdown.
- 8:19SPEAKER_02: And that's what really makes him so scary is that scrambling ability, like we've talked about before.
- 8:24SPEAKER_02: That fourth and 11 pass, dude, to Ezukama when we chose not to punt early in the game.
- 8:30SPEAKER_02: I mean, it seemed like Wells made the right a clutch.
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: It seemed like Wells made the right decision there, but uh a little worrisome, and we'll get to that when we talk about special teams.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: But uh huge, huge pass right on the money to Ezukama, third and eight touchdown to Trey Cleveland, and then another third and four to Miles Price on that last clock draining drive, that four minutes that they took off the clock at the very end of the game.
- 8:53SPEAKER_02: That's all Columbia, man.
- 8:54SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's just I mean, obviously great plays made by the receivers too, but but uh you love this guy.
- 9:00SPEAKER_02: I love this guy.
- 9:02SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, way more confidence going forward in the season under this guy.
- 9:05SPEAKER_03: I uh there's no reason to take him out at this point.
- 9:08SPEAKER_03: I mean, you get a W with uh against a conference opponent at home.
- 9:11SPEAKER_03: Uh, things feel like they're turning around.
- 9:13SPEAKER_03: Things are, you know, and we've been waiting for this.
- 9:16SPEAKER_03: You know, it would have been a really hard podcast to see and record if we were sitting at 0-4, but uh Columbia just he like I said on the last plot, I think he just really brings that Utah State offense that we've that Matt Wells has been wanting to play with, and it really showed, you know, and they the play calling was confident for the most of the game, and uh it just it just seems like this guy knew how to get to the end zone.
- 9:39SPEAKER_03: And you want to hear something really weird?
- 9:40SPEAKER_03: This was like one of the most balanced games we've ever won, at least that I've ever seen.
- 9:46SPEAKER_03: These are weird stats.
- 9:47SPEAKER_03: Get ready for this.
- 9:49SPEAKER_03: Okay, so Texas Tech rushing, 179 yards, Texas Tech receiving, 169 yards.
- 9:58SPEAKER_03: Dude, does this sound like a Texas Tech football game to you?
- 10:01SPEAKER_03: We won that game, by the way.
- 10:02SPEAKER_02: These are stats that we won with, and and this is what Matt Wells wants to do with this team.
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: He's wanted to do it since he got here.
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: He wants a balanced team, he doesn't want to do air raid, he doesn't want to throw 50, 60 times a game to try to win.
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: He doesn't want that.
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: He wants a balanced rushing attack, he wants long drives.
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: Uh, he just this is what Matt Wells has wanted all along.
- 10:24SPEAKER_02: And and I've I said, at least in the last pod, that he uh it's good that he wants this.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: This is what most football teams play with.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech's not used to that, but this is what most football teams play with.
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: And if you have a balance, I mean it gives your defense a break when the offense is on the field for these long seven-minute drives or eight-minute drives, you know.
- 10:44SPEAKER_02: So I I I like Matt Wells' approach to the game, and I think we have the personnel to do it.
- 10:51SPEAKER_02: I just think we needed a change of quarterback to really find that, you know, that that leader for this type of offense.
- 10:57SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 10:58SPEAKER_03: And I think uh the best part about Columbia is his ability to extend the play.
- 11:02SPEAKER_03: I think that's what really helps the uh the Matt Wells style offense.
- 11:05SPEAKER_03: You know, everyone really wants to bleed some clock, it's hard to bleed clock if you have to check out or get sacked, you know, immediately, or if you go three and out uh like that.
- 11:14SPEAKER_03: So I really like his ability to extend the play and kind of the funny.
- 11:17SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna keep kind of rolling with those funny stats because the last time we won a game with less than 200 throwing yards was Mike Leach's first game at Texas Tech um against New Mexico, way back in 2000.
- 11:28SPEAKER_03: That was the last time we won a game throwing less than 200 yards.
- 11:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, I believe it.
- 11:33SPEAKER_02: I believe it.
- 11:33SPEAKER_02: Mike Leach was the guy who implemented the the air raid offense, you know.
- 11:37SPEAKER_02: And ever since then, we've kind of rode through it with with Tuberville and with uh with Cliff and Matt Wells, kind of a good, a nice change of pace, you know, in my opinion.
- 11:46SPEAKER_03: I agree.
- 11:46SPEAKER_03: You know, obviously a change needed to happen, it wasn't working for tech anymore.
- 11:50SPEAKER_03: In the in the college landscape was was transforming.
- 11:53SPEAKER_03: It worked while it was a novelty, it doesn't work very well anymore.
- 11:56SPEAKER_03: Plenty of tape on it, defenses have adapted to it, uh, to go at it, and that's why you don't you don't see um you know Mike Leach rising to the heights like he did whenever Texas Tech was in their heyday because he's he's struggling at Mississippi State and he struggled at Washington State a bit, but he did he did fairly well there.
- 12:12SPEAKER_03: But you know what I'm trying to say, it's it's it's it was time to change.
- 12:16SPEAKER_03: It was time to change a Texas tech.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: Time is kind of caught up with Mike Leach, as you're seeing from this season.
- 12:21SPEAKER_02: Um, and and granted, he's in a new first year at a new school, you know.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: You can't for sure.
- 12:26SPEAKER_02: I'm not I'm not gonna sit here and just crap on Mike Leach the whole time, but uh I I like Wells's approach to the game, and it's a nice change of pace, especially when we when we get a few wins.
- 12:36SPEAKER_02: So um, I did want to bring up the running backs though, because that's such a big part of this offense.
- 12:40SPEAKER_02: You know, every one of them was solid, uh, you know, and and we had two of them go down with injuries.
- 12:46SPEAKER_02: We had Sir Roderick and uh Xavier White go down with injuries this game, and true freshman Tosh Brooks had to step in and kind of finish him off, and he did beautifully.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: I was so I was so happy with how Taj Brooks played, especially as a true freshman, because we have him for years to come.
- 13:02SPEAKER_02: But Sir Rodrick broke off that that 48-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter to uh put us up on West Virginia after they tied it.
- 13:10SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, just uh great performance from our running backs all around.
- 13:14SPEAKER_03: For sure, expect like kind of the to rag on the the the the Taj Brooks part was in the fourth quarter, whenever we really needed to bleed some clock in the end.
- 13:22SPEAKER_03: Taj Brooks nailed it.
- 13:24SPEAKER_03: You know, they absolutely that brutally long drive was exactly what we needed because we've seen the nightmare of what happens when we let the other team get a ball at the end of the game because our our closing performances have been pretty atrocious.
- 13:36SPEAKER_03: Uh, I mean, we don't have to look very far back to open that scar up.
- 13:40SPEAKER_03: So I it it's great to see that shift.
- 13:42SPEAKER_03: It's great to see a young player like him step up when he needed it because that was such a high pressure situation for him, but he handled it beautifully.
- 13:49SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: I mean, that last drive four minutes, and it took two West Virginia timeouts off.
- 13:54SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, it's such a it's such a great thing to have, and it's such a good, good change of scenery, you know, for for us as fans to watch uh them drain some clock and and finally finish out a game.
- 14:06SPEAKER_02: Uh and and you know, just just great game.
- 14:08SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, like I said earlier, so Roderick and uh Xavier White went out with injuries.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: Uh we'll see if we have them for the upcoming week.
- 14:15SPEAKER_02: It looks like Matt Wells is is positive that uh they're gonna be back for the OU game.
- 14:22SPEAKER_02: So, you know, having that having three solid running backs, man, that's I mean, that's just a weapon in and of itself.
- 14:27SPEAKER_02: So, but Taj Brooks, uh unbelievable game.
- 14:30SPEAKER_02: Shout out to uh to Taj Brooks for having a great game.
- 14:33SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 14:34SPEAKER_03: The running backs really played their butts elf out there, and and again, nothing it's hard to not talk enough about the way the young receiver stepped up as well.
- 14:43SPEAKER_03: So it's you know, every the announcers, of course, you know, it seems like ESPN, the only receiver ESPN knows at Texas Tech is TJ Fasher.
- 14:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but man, like Miles Price and uh and EZ, they both stepped up and and just really played like Texas Tech receivers, man.
- 14:58SPEAKER_02: Ezukama was clutch, man.
- 15:00SPEAKER_02: And he he's still only a sophomore, so you know, he's still a young, he's part of that young receiving core as well.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: But uh Ezukama, I love I love that guy, man.
- 15:08SPEAKER_02: 6'3, he's got all the height, he's got a great frame, and he's got uh great ability.
- 15:13SPEAKER_03: So uh love to see the future of receiving core at tech.
- 15:16SPEAKER_03: So that absolutely he's a stud in the making, yeah.
- 15:20SPEAKER_02: And and just getting Vasher and Keyshawn Carter back and and Dalton Rigdon, that just adds to it.
- 15:24SPEAKER_02: So, you know, having these guys being really the backups, this is you know, it's great, great to have it.
- 15:30SPEAKER_02: So, but let's talk about the tech defense here because unusually good game.
- 15:35SPEAKER_02: And and we I say that the last few weeks they played pretty well, you know.
- 15:41SPEAKER_02: This is something we're not used to.
- 15:44SPEAKER_03: You'd never hear this from the media.
- 15:46SPEAKER_03: I mean, we're we're uh like I always say, we're a meme on the defensive side when it comes to any talking head, but dude, especially in this game, they have been playing their butts off, and their their performances have been serviceable, you know, and that's all we've been asking for.
- 16:02SPEAKER_03: You know, we've been holding these teams to about 30 points every week now since the since the UT game.
- 16:07SPEAKER_03: So it's it's time to start giving them some love, and they even had the game-winning play.
- 16:12SPEAKER_03: So it's it's time to start re I mean, we've been begging for this, it's time to finally start rethinking what Texas Tech defense is because they're finally hitting that decent level, you know, they're finally hitting that that winnable level because for a while there they're at the the level where we just couldn't win because of how bad they were.
- 16:28SPEAKER_03: But man, this the staff has really done some good stuff with them.
- 16:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 16:33SPEAKER_02: I mean, the reason we haven't won these last few weeks is because our offense hasn't been clicking, it hasn't been the defense's fault.
- 16:39SPEAKER_02: But I think you know, the first thing you have to talk about is holding Letty Brown to 3.1 yards a carry this game, only 77 yards.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: I unbelievable for a guy that came in averaging six and a half yards a carry, for them to do such a good job on him, great effort right there from the D-line, from the linebackers, from all those guys.
- 16:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the the defensive plan worked perfectly.
- 16:59SPEAKER_03: You know, we were talking about in our our last pod that the the goal to win the game against West Virginia would probably be having Deggy beat us, and it looks like they really did exactly that because uh Letty Brown, who is probably one of the best uh running backs in the Big 12 and also the country, you know, couldn't get anything going.
- 17:17SPEAKER_03: So, and we're that's against a historically awful rushing defense.
- 17:21SPEAKER_03: So love seeing that, and uh obviously Deggy couldn't pull it together to uh to win the game.
- 17:26SPEAKER_03: So our defensive plan was awesome, and I hope we come up with another great idea to get the Sooners.
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: And and you know, we we can't talk about the defense without talking about the game-winning play from the guy that I apologize, Zach McPherson.
- 17:41SPEAKER_02: I do.
- 17:42SPEAKER_02: I I crapped on you after the Houston Baptist game, and you have been absolutely unbelievable the last two weeks.
- 17:49SPEAKER_02: Uh picking up that fumble.
- 17:51SPEAKER_02: It was caused.
- 17:52SPEAKER_02: I need to give you know every guy their due credit, Jacob Morgan Stern, and Colin Schooler, who caused that fumble.
- 17:59SPEAKER_02: Uh, Zach McPherson picked it up and ran 56 yards for a touchdown to put us back in the lead with about nine minutes left in the game.
- 18:06SPEAKER_02: Um, awesome play.
- 18:07SPEAKER_02: Uh, obviously, you know, we were all so excited after seeing that, and uh just great play from the defense, man.
- 18:14SPEAKER_03: That was the game-winning play.
- 18:16SPEAKER_03: That was the play of the game, and uh that's it that's something we've been seeing out of this defense lately.
- 18:21SPEAKER_03: You know, they they've been getting some pivotal turnovers, and um uh I just unfortunately the offense hasn't been able to capitalize on them.
- 18:28SPEAKER_03: But dude, you want to talk about how well this defense played uh this game, they didn't West Virginia didn't score a single point in the fourth quarter, not a one.
- 18:38SPEAKER_03: Love that love it, whatever it matters most.
- 18:42SPEAKER_03: So I love this defense so far, and I hope it only improves as we go forward, and it looks like it is.
- 18:48SPEAKER_03: So, man, I and we though this was going against the supposed best defense of the nation.
- 18:53SPEAKER_03: Statistically, I know schedule kind of plays into that, and it's probably still one of the better defenses in the Big 12, but ours outshine theirs, yeah.
- 19:00SPEAKER_03: So, you know, we have the guys to get this done, and it looks like the schemes are working well enough um to to to to hold the team to about 30 points, which is all you can ask in the Big 12 right now.
- 19:12SPEAKER_03: So that's I mean, what more can you say?
- 19:15SPEAKER_03: I mean, that's just awesome.
- 19:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, I wanted to highlight a couple more guys on this defense.
- 19:19SPEAKER_02: Rico Jeffers had an uh an unbelievable game, and and Matt Wells said that in his in his post-game presser and in his presser today on Monday.
- 19:28SPEAKER_02: Um, uh great effort from the linebacker.
- 19:31SPEAKER_02: He's obviously one of the uh one of the longest tenured Red Raiders there on the defense.
- 19:36SPEAKER_02: So uh love to see that from your linebacker, who's who's really a leader of your team in general.
- 19:40SPEAKER_02: Uh, and then Eli Howard on that last West Virginia drive.
- 19:43SPEAKER_02: Uh, not the drive where they had to heave the Hail Mary at the end of the game, but the one before that.
- 19:49SPEAKER_02: He had a sack and he also got a trip, a big trip up on Letty Brown there that he uh spent all of his effort on diving for his for his feet that that stopped him and only you know that wouldn't let him get that first down.
- 20:01SPEAKER_02: Uh great effort from Eli Howard.
- 20:03SPEAKER_02: He he's uh another another guy who's been on the Red Raiders for a long time.
- 20:06SPEAKER_02: So love to see that from your veterans out there.
- 20:09SPEAKER_03: For sure, man.
- 20:10SPEAKER_03: And uh it wasn't just Rico.
- 20:12SPEAKER_03: I mean, Schooler and Merriweather, uh, all three of those guys, Jeppard Schooler, Merriweather, all totaled nine tackles.
- 20:18SPEAKER_03: So so I mean, geez, our our boys stepped up when it mattered, and uh, I'm just I'm really happy with the way the defense played.
- 20:27SPEAKER_03: So talk about a one-two punch from our new offense to compliment a defense that has been doing their part.
- 20:32SPEAKER_02: So, no doubt.
- 20:34SPEAKER_02: And let's but let's talk about the funniest moment.
- 20:37SPEAKER_02: Let's talk about the funniest moment what happened in the game.
- 20:39SPEAKER_02: And I'm not talking about I'm not talking about the punter yet.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: That was great, but I'm I'm gonna talk about that in a second.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna talk about the funniest moment that I thought happened in this game.
- 20:47SPEAKER_02: So, Tony Fields, West Virginia linebacker, gets called for targeting right at the quarter break.
- 20:52SPEAKER_02: There, they go, and if it really wasn't a quarter break, he probably wouldn't have been called for targeting because they took a look at it during between the first and second quarter there.
- 21:00SPEAKER_02: He gets ejected for targeting, and then later on in the game, Miles Price catches the ball, goes down, but he fumbled.
- 21:09SPEAKER_02: Turns out he went down before he fumbled, so it the play got reversed.
- 21:14SPEAKER_02: But after that, what West Virginia thought was a fumble, Tony Fields of all freaking people, the guy who just got ejected but can stay on the sideline, but was ejected, goes out and celebrates, hops on the field, goes and nearly runs into the ref, and that's why he got the freaking penalty.
- 21:30SPEAKER_02: And he goes, and that's 15 yards, a 15-yard penalty, play got reversed, and then Colombi led another touchdown on that drive.
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: Great play.
- 21:39SPEAKER_02: Lovely, love to see it from a dude on the other end that made that mistake.
- 21:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we don't like that guy because that was the guy that last year at Arizona knocked Alan Bowman out.
- 21:52SPEAKER_03: So you talk about a weird connection in the end, but man, I'm glad that he uh he gave us a hand.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: Forgive you, so that's we forgive that was he was he was just helping us out.
- 22:06SPEAKER_02: That's what he was.
- 22:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 22:07SPEAKER_03: It was like I really I really didn't did them dirty last season, but so I'm gonna give him a hand here.
- 22:11SPEAKER_03: But man, uh yeah, that that was I for almost forgot about that.
- 22:14SPEAKER_03: That was really funny because the dude just ran to the middle of the field, like he didn't have his pads on, he didn't have his pads on anymore.
- 22:21SPEAKER_02: He didn't have he had like an undershirt on, and he just ran out like what an idiot, what a stupid play to do, dude.
- 22:27SPEAKER_02: But and that's one of their best defenders, which is even the better part.
- 22:31SPEAKER_02: And you know, uh, you never want to see targeting, and and it's unbelievable that Texas Tech actually got the team playing Texas Tech got called for targeting.
- 22:38SPEAKER_02: Seems like that hasn't been going our way all year.
- 22:42SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 22:42SPEAKER_02: Uh, love to see it, love to see it.
- 22:44SPEAKER_02: Uh, but yeah, let's get into punter, let's get into Austin McAmara because this man is an MVP.
- 22:49SPEAKER_03: Hot take is he the best player on the team?
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: He might be.
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: Honestly, he really might be God.
- 22:54SPEAKER_03: He might be that's not even like a knock on anyone else on the team.
- 22:57SPEAKER_03: Like, holy cow, this guy might be the best punter in tech history.
- 23:01SPEAKER_02: He might be the best punter in the nation right now.
- 23:03SPEAKER_02: I mean, 87-yard punt, a Texas Tech record.
- 23:09SPEAKER_02: He went end zone to end zone on that bad boy, and that was just stuff.
- 23:13SPEAKER_02: And you know, you got to get a little uh a little uh boost from the West Texas win there, but man, 87 yards, and he also had a 74 yard earlier in the game, dude.
- 23:23SPEAKER_03: It went viral, and uh Pat McAfee even tweeted about it, so you know that's when it's it's big, man.
- 23:28SPEAKER_03: So for the brand, baby, for the brand.
- 23:32SPEAKER_03: Smack Monera is definitely the new MVP of the team, and and uh whole he flipped the field and you know from from basically the end zone.
- 23:40SPEAKER_03: So, I mean, that is ideal, it doesn't get any better than that.
- 23:45SPEAKER_02: Punting is such an undervalued uh position, you know.
- 23:49SPEAKER_02: It's so it's so nice to have a good punter and put their team into uh you know bad field position or something inside the 10, which he always does, and something where he just you know, you're in your opposite end zone, nothing's going for you, you just boom it out to their end zone and let the defense get great field position.
- 24:05SPEAKER_02: I mean, uh it's it's such a good part of the team.
- 24:09SPEAKER_02: Austin's great.
- 24:10SPEAKER_02: We love him.
- 24:10SPEAKER_03: Well, uh we'll we will without question be seeing that guy punting on NFL Sundays.
- 24:15SPEAKER_03: So absolutely very excited for his future, and maybe he'll even grab a award this year.
- 24:20SPEAKER_03: So, man, I mean, talk about one of the best recruits of the Wells era yet, without question.
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 24:26SPEAKER_02: And so, you know, we we got the win here.
- 24:28SPEAKER_02: It was it was a great win.
- 24:30SPEAKER_02: There were some things we still need to clean up.
- 24:32SPEAKER_02: Let's kind of talk about special teams here because that botched extra point early on was was brutal to watch.
- 24:38SPEAKER_02: Uh, it wasn't Trey Wolf's fault at all.
- 24:40SPEAKER_02: It was it was the holder Mark Richardson who who really just I mean, come on, man, you got one job, you got one job on this team, and it's to hold the ball.
- 24:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and that wasn't the only time that game where you'll screw it up.
- 24:52SPEAKER_03: Like he almost botched another one from his holding.
- 24:54SPEAKER_03: So it's I mean, dude, don't you practice this all week?
- 24:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, this is supposed to be the easy part, yeah.
- 25:00SPEAKER_02: And you know, this and I'm sure he'll he'll clean it up.
- 25:03SPEAKER_02: I'm sure you know it's it's such a mental thing with the with the special teams and with holders and kickers and punters, it's insane.
- 25:10SPEAKER_03: I I remember I just remember when that was happening.
- 25:12SPEAKER_03: Obviously, you and I are texting all game, and whenever that happened, I was like, That's gonna come back to haunt us because those are the one, those are the things that do.
- 25:18SPEAKER_03: It's like those mix missed extra points always find a way to come back and haunt uh haunt us because I remember whenever it was tied, we would have been in the lead had he made that extra uh point.
- 25:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 25:27SPEAKER_03: I mean, obviously it worked out in the end, but man, those are points you just do not want to give up, especially whenever our team is this, you know, at this level.
- 25:35SPEAKER_03: You know, we're not gonna be blowing anybody out right now.
- 25:37SPEAKER_03: You know, we're gonna need every point we can get.
- 25:39SPEAKER_03: It's just it hurts so bad leaving him off the board.
- 25:42SPEAKER_02: No doubt, no doubt.
- 25:43SPEAKER_02: Uh, but I'm sure you know, Wells and the special teams staff will hopefully be on that.
- 25:47SPEAKER_02: Uh it you know, it's catching a ball and placing it.
- 25:50SPEAKER_02: It's not it's not too difficult.
- 25:51SPEAKER_02: So guy just has to clean it up a little bit.
- 25:53SPEAKER_02: Uh, and then we also gave up a fake punt on a on a big third down stop that we made, uh, that really kind of altered the momentum a little bit.
- 26:02SPEAKER_02: It it led to them actually scoring and tying up the game.
- 26:05SPEAKER_02: Uh, you got to clean that up, man.
- 26:06SPEAKER_02: You can't and and I saw the snapper, the snapper was completely turned.
- 26:11SPEAKER_02: Like he wasn't even uh he wasn't in a normal snapping position to the punter.
- 26:16SPEAKER_02: He was ready to punt it to those to to the the runner on that one.
- 26:20SPEAKER_02: And uh you you just gotta notice that if you're the special teams unit, man.
- 26:23SPEAKER_03: Man, whenever they converted that, I I got really nervous.
- 26:26SPEAKER_03: I thought that was a complete momentum shift in the game because no one team had taken over yet.
- 26:30SPEAKER_03: I thought because those are one of those game-defining moments, and I was scared we just let one happen, even after an awesome third uh uh three downs.
- 26:38SPEAKER_03: So uh it hasn't been just that moment or this game, you know, it's been kind of a nightmare since UT, you know, since that uh amazing onside kick.
- 26:48SPEAKER_03: Uh, you don't know what special teams you're gonna get uh since then.
- 26:52SPEAKER_03: So I don't know the biggest thing you want to have a special team is consistency, and it just it's something that you kind of expect.
- 26:59SPEAKER_03: So whenever it goes wrong, it's a complete uh focal point.
- 27:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so it's it's just been kind of nerve-wracking there.
- 27:06SPEAKER_03: So I hope the the special teams unit can kind of pulled together as we get back in the season.
- 27:11SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 27:11SPEAKER_02: And I think it's a little concerning with Trey Wolf right now.
- 27:14SPEAKER_02: Uh, it doesn't seem like Wells has the most trust in him.
- 27:18SPEAKER_02: Uh, obviously, on that fourth and 10 uh that we completed, thank God, to to Columbia made a great pass to Ezukama, but uh you're you're at the 28-yard line, fourth and ten, and you're not gonna kick a field goal.
- 27:31SPEAKER_02: A little, you know, a little distrust there uh for for the kicker.
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: And he hasn't made a field goal all year, you know.
- 27:38SPEAKER_02: And so uh we'll see what happens with Trey Wolf.
- 27:42SPEAKER_02: I I hope it's I hope it's not you know something more serious because we're gonna need a kicker later on in the in the season.
- 27:48SPEAKER_03: For sure, man.
- 27:49SPEAKER_03: I mean, I love the guts on the fourth, uh, on that fourth down, but I feel yeah, it's it's kind of like why would you not kick it?
- 27:56SPEAKER_02: But yeah, it's just tough.
- 27:57SPEAKER_02: Uh seeing seeing a kicker struggle early on in the season, you know, uh the mental the mental game is so huge, like I keep saying, uh with with kickers, and and uh we hope you know he gets it together because he had a great season last year, and and let's hope he can continue it on to this year and and you know just kind of take a fresh start.
- 28:15SPEAKER_03: And he basically got tech talking tech preseason honors, okay.
- 28:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I know.
- 28:20SPEAKER_03: Our reputation is on the line here, Trey Wolf.
- 28:23SPEAKER_03: And we're very serious sports personalities.
- 28:25SPEAKER_03: Our words carry a lot of weight, okay.
- 28:28SPEAKER_03: Trey, we thought you were gonna be the greatest kicker in tech history.
- 28:32SPEAKER_03: I mean, you still could be, man, but let's go.
- 28:34SPEAKER_03: Let's pull it together.
- 28:35SPEAKER_03: Figure it out, figure it out, figure it out.
- 28:37SPEAKER_02: You got this, Trey.
- 28:38SPEAKER_02: We believe in you.
- 28:39SPEAKER_02: I know we're kind of crapping on you, but we believe in you.
- 28:42SPEAKER_02: Um, and then the last thing I wanted to bring up that was a negative were the injuries.
- 28:45SPEAKER_02: I mean, we just had a ton of injuries this game when you're talking about Sir Roderick Thompson going out with kind of a rib, rib injury, chest injury, whatever it was in that midsection area.
- 28:54SPEAKER_02: Uh Xavier White looked like a shoulder, kind of messed with him a little bit.
- 28:58SPEAKER_02: And then Kashawn Merriweather went up, went out for a little bit with a left leg injury.
- 29:02SPEAKER_02: He returned, which was nice.
- 29:04SPEAKER_02: But uh, seeing all these injuries, man, we only we only have so many guys we could put out on the field for sure.
- 29:09SPEAKER_03: And it seems like that's something that's been plaguing this team, you know, for a couple seasons now.
- 29:14SPEAKER_03: I I just I want to so much to ask for, and obviously it's not none of these guys help, so it's that's just a pure luck thing.
- 29:22SPEAKER_03: So, I mean, that's nothing the team is doing.
- 29:24SPEAKER_03: So I I just hope these guys can get healthy soon because we're gonna need them, and we're about to take on the king of the Big 12, so we're gonna need all of the the help we can get.
- 29:33SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, no doubt.
- 29:34SPEAKER_02: So, uh, I mean, did you have anything else on West Virginia?
- 29:37SPEAKER_02: Because I, you know, just so happy with this win.
- 29:41SPEAKER_03: Me too, dude.
- 29:42SPEAKER_03: It was needed so badly, and I like streaks against team, you know.
- 29:46SPEAKER_03: It's often we get to say we have a streak against a team, so that makes two.
- 29:50SPEAKER_03: And I mean, all you can say is John Denver went to Texas Tech University, you know.
- 29:55SPEAKER_03: So that's that he did.
- 29:57SPEAKER_02: He he went to Texas Tech University, not West Virginia, Texas Tech.
- 30:02SPEAKER_02: That is where he went.
- 30:03SPEAKER_02: And if this game didn't prove it, I don't know what will.
- 30:07SPEAKER_03: All right, love, love being up on the Mountaineers.
- 30:10SPEAKER_03: So I guess we can move on.
- 30:12SPEAKER_03: Well, I hope we get to talk about another win here next week and further on, man.
- 30:16SPEAKER_03: I just I feel better about the season now.
- 30:18SPEAKER_03: You know, I was a little worried if we lost this game, we were looking at maybe three wins.
- 30:23SPEAKER_03: So now I'm hoping when we get five or four.
- 30:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, this is a complete changer.
- 30:29SPEAKER_02: This is a complete changer, in my opinion, man.
- 30:31SPEAKER_02: It it just seems the offense seems to flow, the defense seems to be with it.
- 30:35SPEAKER_02: Wells seems to be on point.
- 30:37SPEAKER_02: So um I'm happy with it.
- 30:39SPEAKER_02: But let's kind of move on.
- 30:40SPEAKER_02: We'll get to the OU preview here in a bit, but we wanted to touch on a few things, you know, outside of football that's going on at Texas Tech.
- 30:46SPEAKER_02: Um, senior night win for the soccer team, uh, Texas Tech Soccer over Iowa State, one-nothing.
- 30:52SPEAKER_02: Uh, shout out to the seniors, Macy Hergrove and Amanda Porter, you know, the uh, you know, solid seniors on this team.
- 30:58SPEAKER_02: And uh this team hasn't really performed how they thought they would this year, but uh, you know, any any senior at Texas Tech, we got to give them a shout-out for for you know all their hard work and effort uh over the years uh in this game, 1-0 win freshman and and forgive me, I might botch this, but Giselle Kazark Kazarski uh kicked the only goal of the evening uh to beat Iowa State.
- 31:21SPEAKER_02: Tech gets their first win of the season.
- 31:23SPEAKER_02: They have tied twice this year, uh, so you know, not not as bad as it seems, but uh it's a young squad, only two seniors, like I said.
- 31:32SPEAKER_02: So uh I think a lot of good things to come for the for this team.
- 31:36SPEAKER_03: Exactly, man.
- 31:37SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's not the season we were expecting.
- 31:38SPEAKER_03: You know, we were number one preseason, uh Big 12 poll.
- 31:41SPEAKER_03: But I mean, whenever you have this many freshmen on the team and you're already getting that sort of recognition, I think there's a lot to be hopeful for going forward.
- 31:48SPEAKER_03: I mean, not every season is gonna be a uh uh rock the world.
- 31:51SPEAKER_03: So I think there's a lot of hope going in uh going into the future of this program as usual because man, uh Stone has had that program in top notch for years now.
- 32:00SPEAKER_03: So there's I don't think there's anything to worry about big picture wise, but these ladies I think can can probably pull out a few wins before the season's over.
- 32:07SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 32:08SPEAKER_02: Let's hope, man.
- 32:09SPEAKER_02: So uh had a had a bit of basketball news, uh, actually a good amount of basketball news going on.
- 32:14SPEAKER_02: Uh, want to start it off with uh the Andre Emmet court.
- 32:17SPEAKER_02: Uh, if you didn't see Andre Emmet, of course, former um Red Raider basketball star and and member of the Texas Tech Hall of Fame.
- 32:24SPEAKER_02: He was tragically killed in a in a shooting at his home in Dallas.
- 32:27SPEAKER_02: Uh he was only 37 years old.
- 32:29SPEAKER_02: This happened in September of 2019.
- 32:31SPEAKER_02: And uh uh they unveiled a court in his honor uh with thanks to Jarrett Culver and his foundation and uh Nancy Lieberman, uh Basketball Hall of Famer and her foundation.
- 32:42SPEAKER_02: So uh it's on the corner of 26th Street and uh Keweenee Avenue.
- 32:47SPEAKER_02: So uh, you know, great, great honor for such a Texas Tech legend that that passed way too soon.
- 32:53SPEAKER_03: For sure.
- 32:54SPEAKER_03: You know, it was from one legend to another.
- 32:55SPEAKER_03: So talk about that sort of respect and always giving back to the community.
- 32:59SPEAKER_03: It's uh more than just basketball in the end.
- 33:01SPEAKER_03: So uh you gotta love that the love that pours out for uh the community to that.
- 33:05SPEAKER_03: So I mean, that's it's sad, but it's awesome, you know.
- 33:09SPEAKER_03: It's what a great way to remember him.
- 33:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 33:12SPEAKER_02: I mean, uh unbelievable way to remember such a such a great Texas Tech player and such a such a good guy.
- 33:18SPEAKER_02: So um also on the other end of basketball, super United Supermarkets arena, gonna be the United Supermarkets arena until 2035, it seems.
- 33:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they really locked that down as HAB was uh invading the LBK, but yeah, they're getting in there, man.
- 33:33SPEAKER_03: They're trying to invade the United Supermarkets space.
- 33:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it looks like it's been a good relationship, though.
- 33:40SPEAKER_03: I mean, United is a Lub It company, so it's kind of cool to have that for them to kind of keep that money cure on such an important part of the of the community now, especially with the success.
- 33:49SPEAKER_03: You know, it's just kind of a focal point in the community now.
- 33:52SPEAKER_03: So it hey, I mean, uh we'll keep we'll be able to keep calling it the USA for a while.
- 33:56SPEAKER_03: I like calling it the USA.
- 33:58SPEAKER_02: I like calling it the USA, but we kind of had a little discussion with our buddy Clay about this.
- 34:02SPEAKER_02: Uh United Spirits Arena was better.
- 34:06SPEAKER_03: Uh I mean, but it it doesn't, I don't know how much sense that makes.
- 34:10SPEAKER_03: I mean, United Supermarket supermarket arena makes a little more sense because they're United Supermarkets.
- 34:14SPEAKER_02: I get it, but it has United in the name, so that's where it is.
- 34:19SPEAKER_02: You know, I I like the United Spirits arena better than the United Supermarkets arena, but that's I mean, it's it's just a little little stupid thing that we argued about.
- 34:26SPEAKER_03: But uh I'm sure the treasured listeners are like, this is great content.
- 34:30SPEAKER_02: Great content, unbelievable content, right here.
- 34:33SPEAKER_03: Something so mundane.
- 34:34SPEAKER_02: Spirits is better.
- 34:35SPEAKER_03: That's all supermarkets.
- 34:39SPEAKER_02: All righty, but moving on, uh, unfortunately, Orlando and and the worldwide sports at Disney have decided to cancel all of their pre-conference tournaments for for the big 12 well for the for the college basketball season.
- 34:52SPEAKER_02: Uh Tech was supposed to play a 14 tournament there with Houston, Auburn, and Gonzaga.
- 34:57SPEAKER_02: Uh, it looks like that's in jeopardy right now.
- 35:00SPEAKER_02: Um, it looks like really the whole pre-conference schedule is in jeopardy, and and it might be college basketball moving towards a conference-only schedule this season.
- 35:10SPEAKER_03: So, is that the tournament being uh making their own decision, or is it more the NCAA put putting pressure on the preseason?
- 35:17SPEAKER_02: Well, ESPN had a lot of say in it, and basically ESPN axed it and said this bubble isn't gonna work in in Orlando.
- 35:26SPEAKER_02: So they're they're looking at rescheduling some specific games and and and tournaments, like the Jimmy V Classic is looking to get moved to Indianapolis, and so is the Champions Classic.
- 35:37SPEAKER_02: The Champions Classic usually has the really good teams, usually has the North Carolina, the Duke, the Michigan State, those type of teams.
- 35:44SPEAKER_02: Um, and I you know, I I just wonder if we're even gonna play non-conference this year.
- 35:49SPEAKER_03: I mean, that stinks.
- 35:50SPEAKER_03: I was really looking forward to that.
- 35:51SPEAKER_03: I'm sure all the treasured listeners were too, because I wanted to see see some Texas Tech basketball sooner rather than later.
- 35:57SPEAKER_03: And I wanted to get our legs going before we hit conference play.
- 35:59SPEAKER_03: That would be a mess.
- 36:01SPEAKER_03: I mean, I'd I mean, not maybe not, but I mean uh I everybody wants to get a little you know play time before they have to go against the gauntlet.
- 36:09SPEAKER_03: So uh hopefully we can get some games together.
- 36:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 36:13SPEAKER_02: And and I mean, speaking of that, the Big 12 conference schedule did get released today, which was nice to see.
- 36:18SPEAKER_02: Uh, because you know, basketball, it's gonna happen.
- 36:21SPEAKER_02: It's gonna happen this year.
- 36:22SPEAKER_02: Uh, and I I think there's like five key points that I saw on this uh on this Big 12 Texas Tech schedule.
- 36:29SPEAKER_02: We opened up with Kansas in Lubbock on Thursday, December 17th.
- 36:34SPEAKER_02: So what a way to start it off, man, playing Kansas.
- 36:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, talk about, you know, I was saying the entering the gauntlet.
- 36:41SPEAKER_03: Talk about a way to enter said gauntlet.
- 36:43SPEAKER_03: You got King Gauntlet, you know, coming to Lubbock first.
- 36:46SPEAKER_03: So, I mean, hey, it's kind of like uh we were talking about with UT and football.
- 36:50SPEAKER_03: You know, I'd rather get them early.
- 36:51SPEAKER_03: So I think getting Kansas early in Lubbock's a good thing, and I think the students will still be there.
- 36:58SPEAKER_02: Um, just see probably probably on a limited capacity, uh with the USA.
- 37:03SPEAKER_02: But uh yeah, hopefully we could still get a good amount of students in there.
- 37:06SPEAKER_03: That'd be an awesome way to kick in the doors, and it'd probably be a good measuring stick on how this the team is doing at the early in the season as well.
- 37:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 37:15SPEAKER_02: And and the Big 12 is hard, as we all know.
- 37:17SPEAKER_02: Every game, every game is gonna be tough.
- 37:19SPEAKER_02: Uh every game matters.
- 37:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, every game does really matter, but for the first three out of four conference games are at home in Lubbock, so that's a that's a great way to start, you know.
- 37:30SPEAKER_02: Uh going in, I I I playing playing three three out of the four opponents at home.
- 37:36SPEAKER_02: It's such a plus.
- 37:37SPEAKER_02: And you know, it gets you on the right track and it gets your confidence going.
- 37:40SPEAKER_02: So uh hopefully we can grab a few doves because tech has been more than good at home uh in in the last few years in basketball.
- 37:47SPEAKER_02: Um, we also played Baylor for the first time in Lubbock.
- 37:51SPEAKER_02: Uh, so we don't have to go to Waco first.
- 37:53SPEAKER_02: They come to Lubbock first.
- 37:54SPEAKER_02: Baylor, you know, a preseason number one in a lot of analysts' eyes, uh, gonna be a really good team.
- 38:00SPEAKER_02: That's Saturday, January 16th.
- 38:03SPEAKER_02: Um, and then we play we play West Virginia twice in three weeks, which was I thought was kind of odd.
- 38:10SPEAKER_02: Uh West Virginia again gonna be one of the top dogs, probably in the Big 12 fighting.
- 38:14SPEAKER_02: Um, and then our last three conference games of the year, which we're looking at, you know, that's that's Big 12 title race, you know, kind of looking at time.
- 38:24SPEAKER_02: Uh, we're at Kansas, at Oklahoma State, and then UT at home.
- 38:28SPEAKER_02: So that's kind of a tough way to end the season.
- 38:30SPEAKER_02: Three, three, you know, tough opponents, uh, two of them on the road.
- 38:33SPEAKER_02: So uh kind of keep that in mind for for basketball season.
- 38:37SPEAKER_03: For sure.
- 38:38SPEAKER_03: And it's it's gonna be it's gonna be a tough sledding through the Big 12 this year.
- 38:41SPEAKER_03: So uh I this team looks awesome.
- 38:44SPEAKER_03: So I really I'm really just plain excited about it.
- 38:47SPEAKER_03: I'm not nervous, I'm just I'm excited to watch our boys get on the court and have fun.
- 38:50SPEAKER_03: And uh I can't wait to see where we land at the end of the year, you know.
- 38:53SPEAKER_03: So I can't I want to make some travel plans, yeah.
- 38:56SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, dude.
- 38:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so I mean, very excited to just talk about basketball, you know.
- 39:00SPEAKER_03: We're less than a month away from dedicating episodes to it, so very, very pumped to see this and uh see where Chris Beard takes us here this season.
- 39:08SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 39:09SPEAKER_02: Love uh love Chris Beard, love Texas Tech basketball.
- 39:12SPEAKER_02: So hope, hope uh, hope uh they they start off good.
- 39:16SPEAKER_02: But uh, let's kind of get into our OU preview here because this is the game coming up for football, back to football here.
- 39:23SPEAKER_02: Game coming up.
- 39:24SPEAKER_02: We're on a one-game win streak.
- 39:25SPEAKER_02: We're gonna stay at home, we're playing the Sooners, 7 p.m.
- 39:29SPEAKER_02: Halloween night in Lubbock, Texas.
- 39:32SPEAKER_02: And Tristan, what was the last time we beat OU?
- 39:35SPEAKER_03: Last time we beat the Sooners was in 2011.
- 39:39SPEAKER_03: So it's been a few years.
- 39:41SPEAKER_03: I mean, the last time we beat the Sooners, you and I were 15 years old.
- 39:45SPEAKER_03: We just got our driver's permits and had faces full of acne.
- 39:49SPEAKER_03: So there's a lot has changed since then.
- 39:54SPEAKER_03: So uh, but hey, I mean, the announcers the announcers would love this from the West Virginia game.
- 39:58SPEAKER_03: That was Seth Deggy.
- 39:59SPEAKER_03: You know who his little brother is?
- 40:01SPEAKER_03: Uh uh I think he's Jared Dakey.
- 40:04SPEAKER_02: I think I don't know.
- 40:05SPEAKER_02: I need to I need to go back and watch that game and hear 50 more times about how uh Jared Dagey is Seth Dagey's younger brother.
- 40:12SPEAKER_03: But yeah, we went into Norman and upset number three OU uh in that game.
- 40:16SPEAKER_03: Uh we snapped our 39-game home winning streak.
- 40:19SPEAKER_03: So I'm I'm hoping to get a win here in the Jones because out of all the years to get a sneaky one on OU, this one is one of the better ones because obviously this is not the OU team of the past few seasons.
- 40:32SPEAKER_03: They're in a bit of a rebuilding phase, especially with their younger quarterback, and they've dropped two games.
- 40:37SPEAKER_03: I mean, I I can't remember the last time they dropped two games in the Big 12.
- 40:40SPEAKER_03: Uh, not since you and I have probably been diehard.
- 40:43SPEAKER_03: So um shoot, what do you what do you have to say going into that?
- 40:48SPEAKER_02: Well, they've dropped two games, but they've also won their last two.
- 40:51SPEAKER_02: So uh dropped a couple early on in the season.
- 40:54SPEAKER_02: It seems like they're kind of picking it together.
- 40:56SPEAKER_02: Uh, which which not not the best you want to see if you're a Texas Tech fan, but um won their last two against Texas and TCU.
- 41:05SPEAKER_02: Um, but Spencer Rattler's the guy you need to watch.
- 41:08SPEAKER_02: He's he's the he's the red shirt freshman quarterback, number one quarterback in the high school class of 2019.
- 41:14SPEAKER_02: Um, he he was kind of a turnover machine earlier on in the year, you know, three interceptions again in that K-State loss.
- 41:20SPEAKER_02: And then he he's also fumbled three times this year.
- 41:22SPEAKER_02: He's only lost one of them, but he's fumbled three times.
- 41:25SPEAKER_02: And uh I you know, if you're Texas Tech, you want to kind of bring that back instead of instead of what uh UT and TCU have done, and and he's been pretty spectacular against those two teams.
- 41:36SPEAKER_02: Uh he's getting like I said, he's getting he's getting better each game.
- 41:39SPEAKER_02: He's finding his groove as the games go along.
- 41:41SPEAKER_02: Him and Lincoln Riley have been kind of figuring it out as the seasons progressed.
- 41:45SPEAKER_02: Um, and he's got that rushing ability too.
- 41:47SPEAKER_02: You know, he's not just uh uh you know sit in the pocket type of quarterback, he can he can rush and he can escape and scramble uh pretty well.
- 41:55SPEAKER_02: So uh gotta watch him.
- 41:57SPEAKER_02: And then you know, he had really what makes him so good is his O-line because his O-line is fantastic, they give him so much time just to make a decision.
- 42:07SPEAKER_02: And for a young quarterback, that's that's a plus, no doubt.
- 42:11SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, but uh, I I think the the the key to winning is you know putting pressure on him, so that's gonna be tough, yeah.
- 42:18SPEAKER_03: Um, because you really wanted to make those freshman mistakes again.
- 42:21SPEAKER_03: So and I don't think they're out of his system yet.
- 42:23SPEAKER_03: I mean, those don't just go away, you know, after in your freshman year.
- 42:27SPEAKER_03: Obviously, he's sinking into his his play a little better, you know.
- 42:30SPEAKER_03: He's been playing well these past two games, but it's it's in Lubbock, it's in Halloween, it's Halloween night, it's really spooky.
- 42:37SPEAKER_03: That's spooky.
- 42:38SPEAKER_03: Um, and Texas Tech is 40 and 15 in night games at the Jones uh since 2002.
- 42:43SPEAKER_03: So I I hope that this is the the the night that we can really bust it in.
- 42:50SPEAKER_03: And the thing about OU in Lubbock is it's always a wild game, you know, and it's this is one of those games where it's a it's a Big 12 rivalry that is and isn't at the same time.
- 43:01SPEAKER_03: You know, it always seems like it's such an emotional game anytime these two play each other, so and especially in Lubbock.
- 43:09SPEAKER_03: The I think probably what is the most iconic game of the decade in the Big 12 was 2016, our sophomore year of college, or would that be the junior year?
- 43:21SPEAKER_03: That was that was uh I think it was sophomore year.
- 43:24SPEAKER_03: Sophomore year, anyway.
- 43:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think you're right.
- 43:26SPEAKER_03: Uh that was that was yeah, Mayfield versus Mahomes, uh 66 to 59.
- 43:31SPEAKER_03: And I mean, I I they tried tuning into any NFL Sunday featuring either of those two without them bringing it up.
- 43:36SPEAKER_03: Oh so um, and then shortly after that, a couple years later, 51 46, Murray versus Bowman in Lubbock, and I think that's the game we probably would have won had Bowman stayed healthy.
- 43:46SPEAKER_03: So a lot happens in Lubbock with OU versus versus Texas Tech.
- 43:52SPEAKER_03: So this is this is speak spooky levels.
- 43:55SPEAKER_03: Both teams are coming in off of wins, so both teams are feeling confident.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: So I really hope that the the uh the spookiness, the night game, the squasi-rivalry really kicks in to get us this win.
- 44:08SPEAKER_02: No doubt, no doubt.
- 44:09SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, oh I I think you're I think you're on point where you're saying this is this is an OU team that is beatable.
- 44:15SPEAKER_02: Obviously, they've been beaten this year by Big 12 teams.
- 44:19SPEAKER_02: Uh, and so, you know, I I think I think guys you have to look out for here.
- 44:23SPEAKER_02: Uh, they have a solid wide receiver core.
- 44:25SPEAKER_02: Marvin Mims really seems like he has that connection with Spencer Rattler.
- 44:29SPEAKER_02: Uh, four catches, 132 yards, two touchdowns against TCU last week.
- 44:33SPEAKER_02: Um, Austin Stogner looks like uh averaging almost seven targets a game.
- 44:38SPEAKER_02: So he's a guy we got to watch out for.
- 44:39SPEAKER_02: And then uh Charleston Rambo has that big, big playability, and really you'll see that from all these OU wide receivers, is they have a lot of big playability.
- 44:48SPEAKER_02: And uh I we our our defensive backs, we just have to be on point this game, man.
- 44:53SPEAKER_03: For sure.
- 44:54SPEAKER_03: And uh, I I think our guys probably want to win this game more than anybody, you know.
- 44:58SPEAKER_03: He has had our number for years, so uh and the kind of a uh a fun thing is Matt Wells is really, really good at home.
- 45:05SPEAKER_03: He's 32, uh 32 and 13 in home games over his career.
- 45:09SPEAKER_03: Uh, I'm sure okay, a lot of those L's are from his time at tech.
- 45:14SPEAKER_03: I was about to say, I mean, if you do watch some of the uh some of his best games at tech, and they have been at home, and it looks like he is improving, you know.
- 45:23SPEAKER_03: I think yeah, last weekend was a big turnaround, and uh, I think Columbia will be a good match against this OU sooner team.
- 45:31SPEAKER_03: Uh oh, especially, you know, this isn't their best defense in a while, but it's still it's still probably more formidable than the ones that we've we've played with our high slinging offenses.
- 45:41SPEAKER_03: So I it just I think it's gonna take a lot of luck, but this is the year to do it if it's gonna happen.
- 45:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 45:49SPEAKER_02: I mean, you were talking about that OU defense.
- 45:52SPEAKER_02: Uh, really, their thing this year has been getting to the quarterback, they've uh uh especially over the last two weeks, you know, three sacks against TCU and six sacks against Texas.
- 46:00SPEAKER_02: So uh our O line has to be on point.
- 46:03SPEAKER_02: They gotta they gotta prevent that.
- 46:04SPEAKER_02: And Columbia, I'm confident that the guy, uh, you know, with his rushing ability and his escape, you know, I I think he has the ability to to lead those down a little bit and to uh get some rushing yards, get some positive yardage like he's been doing, you know, exactly all year.
- 46:19SPEAKER_03: Gotta use his legs because I mean I think that would have been a huge issue had Bowman been in this game.
- 46:23SPEAKER_03: Bowman's a bit of a statue.
- 46:25SPEAKER_03: So the that sacks are obviously a nightmare if you're gonna have someone like Bowman who can't move his legs.
- 46:31SPEAKER_03: So I I have a lot of confidence with Columbi being able to maybe scuffle his way down the field if he can't pass it.
- 46:36SPEAKER_03: So I just feel like we gotta play our consistent game that we have in and just try not try not to turn over the ball too much and try not to uh hand over the ball too much.
- 46:46SPEAKER_03: You know, I don't want any three and out.
- 46:47SPEAKER_03: So one definitely want us to keep leading that clock.
- 46:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 46:50SPEAKER_02: Uh I think keys to the game.
- 46:52SPEAKER_02: You're I I wrote down three of them.
- 46:54SPEAKER_02: Uh, just the rush needs to get to Spencer Radler.
- 46:58SPEAKER_02: Uh, Eli Howard, Tony Bradford, Rico Jeppers, Colin Schooler, those guys have to have big games.
- 47:03SPEAKER_02: You know, when we're rushing uh five and when we're we're we blitz very, very you know, rarely, but when we do, we got to get to that quarterback and we got to make him uh make some smart decisions.
- 47:13SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, for a guy that's not as experienced, uh, you hope he makes some bad plays, maybe throws a pick or two, that kind of thing.
- 47:20SPEAKER_02: Um, also in that same kind of stratosphere, the defensive backs need to limit the big plays.
- 47:25SPEAKER_02: OU has lived off big plays this season.
- 47:27SPEAKER_02: I mean, long 30-yard gains, 61-yard touchdowns, 40, whatever.
- 47:32SPEAKER_02: And and our defensive backs need to stop that.
- 47:35SPEAKER_02: I uh, you know, Zach McPherson, uh, DeMarcus Fields, those Alex Hogan, those type of guys need to step up and have a big game against this sooner offense.
- 47:43SPEAKER_03: For sure, man.
- 47:44SPEAKER_03: We're talking about OU.
- 47:45SPEAKER_03: We're talking about the the what has been the deadliest offense in the country for years.
- 47:49SPEAKER_03: So, I mean, even if even if it's not the full blood machine that it has been for uh of the past, you know, this year it's still OU.
- 47:58SPEAKER_03: So you're whenever you're talking about playing OU, you're gonna be talking about how you slow them down.
- 48:02SPEAKER_03: So our defense obviously needs to play lights out, and our offense our offense needs to keep up with the scoring because that's the only way you beat OU.
- 48:09SPEAKER_03: You know, it's it's you gotta cause mistakes on their offense and keep scoring.
- 48:13SPEAKER_03: You know, you can't let up.
- 48:14SPEAKER_02: So, yeah, no doubt.
- 48:15SPEAKER_02: And I think my last point that I'll say on OU is we need to get healthy and we need to stay healthy because of all these injuries that we suffered last week.
- 48:23SPEAKER_02: We need to get healthy going up to this game, and we need to stay healthy during the game.
- 48:27SPEAKER_02: You know, Sir Rodrigue tried to go in a couple different times after getting hurt, and it just wasn't working, and it led to a couple bad plays.
- 48:33SPEAKER_02: And it's like, guys, you know, if you're hurt, you're hurt, you gotta stay out.
- 48:37SPEAKER_02: But but uh we just need to find a way, and and I know most of that's luck, and but but we need to find ways to to stay healthy against OU.
- 48:45SPEAKER_03: All right, so we we we broke down the teams a bit here, but how do you feel confidently against this team?
- 48:50SPEAKER_03: Uh, what do you think?
- 48:51SPEAKER_03: How do you feel about this game?
- 48:52SPEAKER_02: I feel a different sort of confidence when Colombi is in the game.
- 48:56SPEAKER_02: Like I just do.
- 48:57SPEAKER_02: And it I felt it against West Virginia.
- 48:59SPEAKER_02: I was telling you and and Austin in our group text that I you know, we're gonna find a way to win this game.
- 49:05SPEAKER_02: We are.
- 49:05SPEAKER_02: I I don't know how, but we're going to win this game because I feel such a different level of confidence with Colombi starting at quarterback.
- 49:13SPEAKER_02: Um, I you know, I think it's gonna be a good game.
- 49:16SPEAKER_02: I don't think it's gonna be a blowout by any standards.
- 49:18SPEAKER_02: I think we're if we do lose this game, it's gonna be tight and we're gonna play well against this OU team.
- 49:23SPEAKER_02: Um, and this is a a really good chance to get a really good win.
- 49:27SPEAKER_03: This is the first time I felt pretty confident against OU in a long time.
- 49:32SPEAKER_03: I mean, I I'm not going into this thinking it's an L.
- 49:34SPEAKER_03: I'm not saying I'm going into this thinking it's a win either, necessarily, but I haven't felt this good about playing an OU team in a long time.
- 49:41SPEAKER_03: And I think that says a lot about the way this team has been shaping up.
- 49:44SPEAKER_03: I mean, asked me two weeks ago, I'd be like, oh, oh god, no chance.
- 49:49SPEAKER_03: No way.
- 49:49SPEAKER_03: But with that with that confident win over Western Virginia, you know, and the thing about it is um it didn't feel like we got lucky against West Virginia.
- 49:57SPEAKER_03: It really feels like we were the better team on the field, and I hope to see this say see somewhere more of the same against OEU.
- 50:03SPEAKER_03: And it would be uh monumental for Matt Wells and this program to beat OEU.
- 50:08SPEAKER_03: It would talk, it would give the fans and the program such a feeling of change since the last era if you beat the per perennial king.
- 50:17SPEAKER_03: So it would it would kind of bring us back to that upset central Texas Tech Lubbock football.
- 50:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 50:25SPEAKER_02: And and back to what you were saying, I mean, the confidence for me as from a fan's perspective, you know, in the past it's been like, oh yeah, I believe in Mahomes.
- 50:33SPEAKER_02: Mahomes is gonna score 40 points a game, you know, no matter what he does.
- 50:37SPEAKER_02: But the defense I have no confidence in.
- 50:39SPEAKER_02: And then you switch to like the Schimonek and Jed Duffy days, and you're like, I don't trust this offense, but the defense, you know, I I think they're gonna be okay.
- 50:46SPEAKER_02: This is the first time in a long time that I trust both sides of the ball pretty, pretty well to do their job.
- 50:52SPEAKER_03: Well put, man, and I feel the same way.
- 50:54SPEAKER_03: And we couldn't have a better time slot or a better day for this to happen.
- 50:57SPEAKER_03: So spooky, spooky season.
- 51:00SPEAKER_03: And I bet the Jones will be packed.
- 51:02SPEAKER_03: I bet I bet that they'll be to the limit of the capacity without question.
- 51:05SPEAKER_03: So uh students get out there, be loud, and I hope we can get that dub, man.
- 51:11SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 51:11SPEAKER_02: That would be un that would be a great win for Matt Wells, for the program, for everything right now to beat beat this OU team.
- 51:18SPEAKER_02: So um I you know, I think we can move on at this point.
- 51:22SPEAKER_02: Tristan, what's your song of the week?
- 51:24SPEAKER_03: All right, so for my song of the week, I wanted to give the listeners kind of a uh a Halloween vibe.
- 51:32SPEAKER_03: Um, so there's this there's this song, and it's uh it's by a man named Bobby, also known as Boris Pickett, and he has this uh great written song about this time.
- 51:45SPEAKER_03: He's reminiscing about a crazy night in his life uh during October, and it's called the Monster Mash.
- 51:53SPEAKER_03: And it's the match, it's a graveyard smash.
- 51:57SPEAKER_03: So I I feel like the listeners, it's it's obscure, you know, and it's kind of like one of those forgotten songs, you know.
- 52:05SPEAKER_03: And I I think the listeners will enjoy that on a October week with the hollow Halloween in it.
- 52:12SPEAKER_03: So I give it a listen.
- 52:13SPEAKER_03: I'm sure y'all have never heard of it before.
- 52:15SPEAKER_03: Monster Mash.
- 52:18SPEAKER_04: They played the Monster Mash.
- 52:21SPEAKER_04: It was a graveyard smash, it was on an old man, they played the mash, they played the monster mash.
- 52:33SPEAKER_02: Best best Halloween song there is.
- 52:35SPEAKER_02: I don't care, I don't care what you say.
- 52:37SPEAKER_02: Monster Mash is a winner in all books.
- 52:41SPEAKER_02: What's yours, the man?
- 52:42SPEAKER_02: What do you got?
- 52:43SPEAKER_02: I didn't do a theme.
- 52:44SPEAKER_02: I'm sorry.
- 52:45SPEAKER_02: I didn't do a Halloween theme to my song, but what I did do is I picked a song that neither of us have picked before, for uh, especially on my end, it's weird because I I am a hip-hop fan, I'm a rap fan as well.
- 52:58SPEAKER_02: Uh, I chose Kid Cuddy um Erase Me featuring Kanye West.
- 53:03SPEAKER_02: It's off of his Man on the Moon Volume 2 album.
- 53:06SPEAKER_02: He recently, Kid Cuddy just announced that he's gonna have uh Man on the Moon Volume 3 coming out here soon.
- 53:11SPEAKER_02: Uh, and he's just he's one of my favorite rappers.
- 53:14SPEAKER_02: He's he's fun to listen to, he's he's very chill.
- 53:16SPEAKER_02: Um, and I, you know, it's weird that I haven't picked a hip hop song yet because I I I am a hip hop fan.
- 53:21SPEAKER_02: I like it, I like it a lot.
- 53:22SPEAKER_02: So that was uh Kid Cuddy Erase Me featuring Kanye West.
- 53:44SPEAKER_03: Wow, it did take you a long time to pick a rap song, man.
- 53:47SPEAKER_03: That's that's crazy.
- 53:48SPEAKER_03: And weird.
- 53:48SPEAKER_03: I mean a way to pick one with future president Kanye West as well.
- 53:54SPEAKER_03: Kanye, vote for Kanye.
- 53:56SPEAKER_03: We we got some really weird vibes in the song of the week this episode.
- 54:01SPEAKER_02: So very, very different.
- 54:03SPEAKER_02: We're getting we're getting weird here on the Talky Tech podcast.
- 54:06SPEAKER_03: So y'all can't ever say I don't just do country music ever again since I gave you rock classic monster mash.
- 54:12SPEAKER_03: Is it rock?
- 54:13SPEAKER_03: Is it rock or is it uh it's it's many would say it's the greatest rock song of all time.
- 54:18SPEAKER_03: Okay, okay.
- 54:19SPEAKER_02: It might be in the monster rock genre.
