Latest / OneLegUpAlex Media / How Nick Mangold’s Humanity and Tragic Passing Can Bring About Kidney Disease Awareness 10-28-25
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Well, I've been meaning to cover the tragic and sad
- 0:09Speaker 2: passing of Nick Mangold Jets Ring of Honor Jets Center,
- 0:15Speaker 2: and I didn't realize this all the way up until
- 0:17Speaker 2: the twenty sixteen season, but his story is starting to
- 0:23Speaker 2: remind me a bit of Garrig and Als. A couple
- 0:28Speaker 2: of weeks ago, Mangold wrote, and as you know, he
- 0:31Speaker 2: passed away from kidney disease, and it was waiting a transplant,
- 0:35Speaker 2: and I guess the transplanters did not.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Surface or come about. He also was on dialysis, and
- 0:48Speaker 3: he wrote this a couple of weeks ago.
- 0:51Speaker 2: In two thousand and six, I was diagnosed with a
- 0:53Speaker 2: genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease. I'm
- 0:57Speaker 2: undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant. I
- 1:00Speaker 2: always knew this day would come, but I thought I
- 1:02Speaker 2: would have more time. But in two thousand and six,
- 1:06Speaker 2: at the same time he was diagnosed with US.
- 1:07Speaker 3: You know what he did. He took the field as
- 1:10Speaker 3: the Jets.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Center and snapped the ball from six until late twenty
- 1:16Speaker 2: sixteen season, the Jets right every Jets quarterback until late
- 1:20Speaker 2: in twenty sixteen. Also, this is why you go to
- 1:23Speaker 2: Woodbridge events, because he was actually at Woodbridge last year
- 1:27Speaker 2: for a Jets watch party and I wanted to go.
- 1:30Speaker 3: It just did not happen. But you know, time is fragile.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Get to meet these guys.
- 1:38Speaker 2: And.
- 1:42Speaker 3: For me, it's just it's very similar.
- 1:45Speaker 2: I mean, he had this genetic diagnosis in two thousand
- 1:48Speaker 2: and six and snapped the ball every time out and
- 1:56Speaker 2: starting playing every Jets game from six until twenty eleven,
- 1:59Speaker 2: eight nine games, including seven playoff games until hy And
- 2:02Speaker 2: goes spraying in twenty eleven against Saxonville Asylum for the
- 2:06Speaker 2: first time as a pro. He also made a few
- 2:08Speaker 2: Pro Bowls if I'm not mistaken, right, Ryan, Oh, he did.
- 2:11Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely, multiple time Pro bowler and doing all that
- 2:16Speaker 4: with the condition that he had. I mean, it just
- 2:19Speaker 4: makes his story even better but also more tragic.
- 2:23Speaker 3: And also more inspired.
- 2:24Speaker 2: I mean, he went through all of that, and I
- 2:28Speaker 2: don't think he was doing Dallas while he played. He
- 2:29Speaker 2: might have, but he was obviously on DALYs now. But
- 2:33Speaker 2: to go through and have this kidney issue his whole
- 2:37Speaker 2: playing career and not really talk about it, you know,
- 2:40Speaker 2: he didn't make a big deal about it. It wasn't
- 2:42Speaker 2: really a storyline every time he snapped the ball as
- 2:44Speaker 2: far as I could tell.
- 2:46Speaker 4: Yeah, Like, he didn't make it his entire personality trade
- 2:48Speaker 4: because really, in the end, what he wanted to focus
- 2:50Speaker 4: on was just bring the Jets winning football and for
- 2:53Speaker 4: a good chunk of his career. I mean, that's exactly
- 2:56Speaker 4: what he did, checking guys like Pennington, far Sanchez and Look.
- 3:00Speaker 4: I could go on about how bad the Jets QB
- 3:03Speaker 4: room was, but that really isn't the point of your
- 3:08Speaker 4: show today, Alex.
- 3:09Speaker 1: The point is Mangoled.
- 3:12Speaker 4: Hell of a football player and even better as a
- 3:15Speaker 4: man pulls playing.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Days, and it's about bringing awareness because kidneys are nothing
- 3:20Speaker 2: to mess with. And when I found out about that,
- 3:24Speaker 2: it struck a chord personally because I have one. And
- 3:37Speaker 2: the fact that Mangold has worked so damn hard up
- 3:41Speaker 2: until his passing to maintain his kidney function is admirable.
- 3:47Speaker 3: It is admirable how.
- 3:48Speaker 2: He continued even after his playing days to maintain and
- 3:53Speaker 2: fight this fight with the kidney disease through dialysis and
- 3:57Speaker 2: dialysis is not easy. I know it's painful, and it's
- 4:01Speaker 2: having won myself, it's very, very fearful.
- 4:03Speaker 3: To get have to get that.
- 4:05Speaker 2: So I commend him for all the work he put
- 4:07Speaker 2: in to keep going with the disease.
- 4:10Speaker 3: It's a shame the transplant did not happen though.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Yeah, it really is such a shame.
- 4:15Speaker 4: But it also just puts in a perspective just how
- 4:17Speaker 4: hard it is these days.
- 4:19Speaker 1: To even get a new organ in the first place.
- 4:22Speaker 4: I mean, all the ads that we've been seeing, especially
- 4:26Speaker 4: over the past couple of months, you know, become an
- 4:28Speaker 4: organ donor, become an organ donor, really hammers it home
- 4:31Speaker 4: that getting a new organ, like a new kidney, it's
- 4:36Speaker 4: never been tougher than ever to get.
- 4:39Speaker 1: A new one, especially in this day and age.
- 4:41Speaker 4: And you know, if somebody like Nick mangled, somebody of
- 4:45Speaker 4: his stature unfortunately wasn't able to get one, then you know,
- 4:50Speaker 4: I think at some points should be raised about potentially
- 4:54Speaker 4: making new organ access a little bit easier, even perhaps
- 4:58Speaker 4: encouraging man more people to sign up to become organ donors,
- 5:02Speaker 4: because now I don't know the exact numbers as far
- 5:06Speaker 4: as right now is concerned, but to my knowledge those
- 5:10Speaker 4: are pretty low compared to what a lot of people
- 5:13Speaker 4: are expecting it to be.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Yeah, and right now, you talk about stats. One in
- 5:19Speaker 2: seven US adults. That's an estimated three and a half
- 5:22Speaker 2: million Americans suffer from kidney disease.
- 5:25Speaker 3: That's a big number.
- 5:29Speaker 2: As of the nhl NIH's recent studies. And of course
- 5:33Speaker 2: the organ donors themselves. It's not an easy process, and
- 5:39Speaker 2: of course you can register to donate.
- 5:40Speaker 3: And there's just a lot of red tape.
- 5:43Speaker 2: I feel like that goes into this whole don you know,
- 5:47Speaker 2: organ donor situation.
- 5:48Speaker 3: But I digress.
- 5:51Speaker 2: I think the way everybody's remembering, I mean, he seemed
- 5:54Speaker 2: like such a beloved figure on and off the field.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Rex Ryan was crying on the NFL that morning on ESPN.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Yeah, Mike Greenberg Show, and.
- 6:05Speaker 4: Mostly because this wasn't just a player coach relationship, and
- 6:09Speaker 4: he went in depth about it, even through all the
- 6:11Speaker 4: tears that he shed that it was more of a
- 6:15Speaker 4: man to man connection that he felt with Nick.
- 6:18Speaker 1: And you know what, his.
- 6:20Speaker 4: Last game as the coach of the Jets, it perfectly encapsulate,
- 6:23Speaker 4: encapsulates just that Mangold played for Rex Ryan hurt in
- 6:29Speaker 4: that last game of the regular season, even when he
- 6:31Speaker 4: had no business of being out on the field whatsoever,
- 6:34Speaker 4: just because he wanted to play for his.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Coach, and I think of Mango.
- 6:38Speaker 2: He also had a lot of fun on the field,
- 6:39Speaker 2: if I'm not mistaken, I got a lot of fun
- 6:41Speaker 2: on the field as the Jets center.
- 6:43Speaker 3: And of course he was.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Part of the teams that did get to the AFC
- 6:47Speaker 2: Championship Game back to back appearance.
- 6:50Speaker 3: I mean, I remember that.
- 6:51Speaker 2: I was so hopeful for the Jets of that time too.
- 6:53Speaker 2: That was just a lot of hope there and they
- 6:56Speaker 2: got to Pittsburgh and that was it. But he was
- 6:58Speaker 2: a he was a He was a solid core to
- 7:01Speaker 2: that team, no doubt about it.
- 7:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, especially when you have to Brickashaw Ferguson
- 7:07Speaker 4: on that same line, Damian Woody, you know, just to
- 7:10Speaker 4: name two other Keth Coggs to that Jets old line
- 7:14Speaker 4: in the very early twenty tens, and it's just been
- 7:19Speaker 4: tragic to see both of them. But really, all those
- 7:22Speaker 4: Jets from the early twenty tens just talk about what
- 7:26Speaker 4: Nick meant to them as a teammate, as a friend,
- 7:31Speaker 4: a brother, because nobody should really have to go through that,
- 7:37Speaker 4: especially at such a young age. And my heart just
- 7:41Speaker 4: goes out to you know, not only Nick's family can't
- 7:44Speaker 4: imagine what they're going through right now. But you know,
- 7:46Speaker 4: anybody that got to know Nick, not just as a
- 7:49Speaker 4: football player, but as a person, life just sure taking.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Yeah, so short, and it is a reminder though here
- 7:59Speaker 2: on the adapt side see adaptation and sports blend together.
- 8:04Speaker 2: And I'm gonna talk with Paralympi and Patrick Holgren play
- 8:07Speaker 2: that interview with did in the city over the weekend,
- 8:10Speaker 2: but in another show. But this brings awareness that we
- 8:16Speaker 2: always have to keep adapting to our circumstances. If you
- 8:19Speaker 2: feel anything is wrong with your kidney function, get it
- 8:24Speaker 2: checked out. I think Nick getting it checked out probably
- 8:28Speaker 2: added ears to his life, to be honest with.
- 8:30Speaker 3: You, because you have the diagnose NOS six.
- 8:32Speaker 2: But you think about this, about nineteen years after getting
- 8:36Speaker 2: the diagnosis, he was still here with us.
- 8:38Speaker 3: That's to me impressive because I'm always worried about my
- 8:41Speaker 3: one kidney. He had to deal with it in both
- 8:43Speaker 3: of his kidneys.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, to deal with it in both is just.
- 8:48Speaker 4: Not at all easy. And you know, not that I
- 8:52Speaker 4: can really understand where you're coming from, at least in
- 8:54Speaker 4: your situation, Alex, but you don't. It's just tough to
- 8:58Speaker 4: even imagine. I imagine him went through having it in
- 9:02Speaker 4: both kidneys, you know, not just having it in Won,
- 9:06Speaker 4: but both.
- 9:08Speaker 2: And I mean, wow, I'm wondering if he had the
- 9:13Speaker 2: same fear that I do, which is like, oh my god,
- 9:14Speaker 2: this kidney's gonna just let out one day, you know,
- 9:17Speaker 2: because you have that fear, uh, and you gotta work
- 9:20Speaker 2: to maintain it every damn day. And clearly since diagnosis
- 9:24Speaker 2: for nineteen years, he did that to the best of
- 9:27Speaker 2: his reality. So we got to take his story much
- 9:29Speaker 2: like Terry Worden, who actually was honored by his family.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Of course, he had a stovagio cancer, but he took care,
- 9:38Speaker 2: he worked to take care of himself through that. All
- 9:41Speaker 2: these people and their stories are just a reminder, and
- 9:46Speaker 2: they're really short how life was cut short for them.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Both are a reminder to keep working as hard as
- 9:55Speaker 2: them on their health but also in their memory, like
- 9:59Speaker 2: we gotta now keep working harder on ourselves, because that's
- 10:02Speaker 2: what Nick would want. That's what Nick did for those
- 10:05Speaker 2: nineteen years, even as a player.
- 10:07Speaker 4: Yeah, that's what he did, and it's what any football fan,
- 10:12Speaker 4: anybody who has followed his career, any Jets span out there,
- 10:16Speaker 4: that's exactly.
- 10:17Speaker 1: What Nick would want them to do.
- 10:19Speaker 4: And you know, I can just only hope and pray
- 10:22Speaker 4: that the Johnson's can honor him and the only way
- 10:26Speaker 4: they could.
- 10:27Speaker 1: I mean, they got their first win of the season
- 10:29Speaker 1: this Sunday against him.
- 10:30Speaker 3: That was a dramatic way to win for him too,
- 10:32Speaker 3: by the way.
- 10:32Speaker 4: No absolutely, I mean Mason Taylor, son of his former
- 10:37Speaker 4: teammate Jason getting the touchdown. Nick Folk is former teammate
- 10:41Speaker 4: kicking all those field goals in the game too.
- 10:44Speaker 1: And not only that.
- 10:45Speaker 4: But you know what a way for Aaron Glenn to
- 10:47Speaker 4: get his first win as the Jets head coach. Granted
- 10:50Speaker 4: they weren't teammates or anything like that, but you know,
- 10:54Speaker 4: you know, Nick definitely knew a thing or two about
- 10:57Speaker 4: what it was like to be in that locker room
- 10:59Speaker 4: for head coaches first win at the NFL level. I
- 11:04Speaker 4: mean you just look at Eric Mangini, you look at
- 11:06Speaker 4: Rex Ryan, yeah, all those other Jets head coaches.
- 11:09Speaker 1: I mean, he knew what it was like to be there.
- 11:11Speaker 4: And something else I'll bring up as well, Alex, because
- 11:14Speaker 4: I've seen this around Jets Twitter the past couple of days,
- 11:17Speaker 4: a lot of fans suggesting that the Jets re release
- 11:23Speaker 4: Nick Mangle's Jersey circa. The twenty tens re release it
- 11:28Speaker 4: for sale in their Team store, but with all the
- 11:32Speaker 4: profits one hundred percent of the profits going towards Nick's family.
- 11:36Speaker 4: I've seen a couple of people also suggested going to
- 11:39Speaker 4: oh a.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Foundation if he doesn't, If he doesn't know, how would
- 11:41Speaker 2: you feel about that?
- 11:42Speaker 3: If he doesn't have it already?
- 11:43Speaker 2: I think a foundation will be formed in Nick's honor, because,
- 11:47Speaker 2: as I say, one in seven thirty million people have
- 11:51Speaker 2: a kidney disease. That's a lot of people, and you
- 11:55Speaker 2: don't think about it every day that you're rolling around,
- 11:58Speaker 2: but it does happen. And I know a friend or
- 12:01Speaker 2: two that have had dialysis, so they've gone through it.
- 12:05Speaker 2: It's painful. But yeah, I would say that would be smart.
- 12:09Speaker 2: And what foundations have you founded in your.
- 12:11Speaker 4: Yeah, So to circle back to that, Nick Mangold, he
- 12:13Speaker 4: doesn't have a foundation yet, and I'm sure there probably
- 12:18Speaker 4: will be one that's created, whether it's by his wife
- 12:21Speaker 4: or somebody else in his family. I mean that, you know,
- 12:26Speaker 4: not that I want to put it this way, but
- 12:28Speaker 4: it does seem like a foregone conclusion. But the National
- 12:32Speaker 4: Kidney Foundation, American Kidney Fund, they're both promoting Oregon donation
- 12:37Speaker 4: awareness in his memory.
- 12:39Speaker 1: So it's something important to note.
- 12:40Speaker 4: As well if any of your listeners perhaps want.
- 12:44Speaker 1: To raise hard yourself. Yeah, I'm awareness for those foundations.
- 12:49Speaker 2: I'll post a link on that because we always are
- 12:52Speaker 2: trying to bring awareness.
- 12:53Speaker 4: Here, and even the Leary Firefighters Foundation as well, because
- 12:57Speaker 4: not that it's kidney related, but.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Nick was a big support and you think about it,
- 13:01Speaker 2: he waited till two weeks before his passing basically to
- 13:08Speaker 2: share this, which means he tried his hardest not to
- 13:11Speaker 2: let it out in the public. He wanted to work
- 13:13Speaker 2: through it in private. And I actually give him a
- 13:17Speaker 2: lot of credit for coming public about this because then
- 13:22Speaker 2: maybe people who have this chronic inn disease won't feel
- 13:25Speaker 2: as alone. Well I haven't been, now Nick Mingo's telling
- 13:28Speaker 2: us he has. I mean that's a big deal in
- 13:30Speaker 2: an athlete share such a human side to them, Yeah.
- 13:33Speaker 4: Because it's not often that you really get to see
- 13:36Speaker 4: that side of these athletes. I mean we put them
- 13:39Speaker 4: on a pedestal all the time and think that, you know,
- 13:42Speaker 4: they're soul above us, but in the end of the day,
- 13:45Speaker 4: they're human too, And even with.
- 13:48Speaker 1: The crazy, crazy world that sports has become, especially.
- 13:52Speaker 4: In this day and age with all the gambling scandals
- 13:55Speaker 4: in the NBA controversies as well with the NFL in
- 13:59Speaker 4: regard to to gambling, we forget that these people are
- 14:03Speaker 4: human too in the end, and we should be really
- 14:06Speaker 4: seeing them for who they are as fellow humans, not
- 14:10Speaker 4: just athletes.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Well, I am I am touched that he went public
- 14:16Speaker 2: about it because I now feel less alone as well.
- 14:20Speaker 3: I mean, one kidney.
- 14:21Speaker 2: They never could find the other one when I was born,
- 14:24Speaker 2: which is just the craziest thing. It's just we assume
- 14:27Speaker 2: I have one and it's been going for thirty four
- 14:30Speaker 2: years now. But when something like this pops up, it
- 14:34Speaker 2: just also brings an internal awareness. Okay, if Nick Mangold
- 14:40Speaker 2: a big ass center like he was big, he's a
- 14:43Speaker 2: big dude.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 14:44Speaker 4: Even when I saw him at the Stadium Series press
- 14:47Speaker 4: conference at MetLife November twenty twenty three, he was over
- 14:51Speaker 4: there along with all those representatives from the Aisles, Flyers, Rangers,
- 14:55Speaker 4: and Devils.
- 14:56Speaker 1: He was there as one of the ambassadors as well.
- 14:58Speaker 1: I believe he.
- 14:59Speaker 4: Was there with Leonard Marshall too. I need a fact
- 15:01Speaker 4: check myself on that one, but it was still pretty big,
- 15:05Speaker 4: especially in his post playing days.
- 15:09Speaker 2: But if if, if he can, and I hate the
- 15:13Speaker 2: word inflict inflicted, but if he can have an affliction
- 15:17Speaker 2: like that, And by the way, to be a center
- 15:20Speaker 2: of the NFL, you have to take great care of yourself.
- 15:21Speaker 2: I know he probably did. I mean, the guy was
- 15:24Speaker 2: a hall Is he a Hall of Famer yet.
- 15:27Speaker 4: Not yet, but he will definitely get a busting cannon.
- 15:31Speaker 2: And by the way, looking about the shoes he had
- 15:33Speaker 2: to fill Becausekevin Mawai was an unbelievable center back in
- 15:35Speaker 2: the day, and so Mango comes in there and does
- 15:38Speaker 2: an incredible job for those seasons. But my point is, Uh,
- 15:44Speaker 2: this prolific athlete comes out in public and says this
- 15:49Speaker 2: and shares.
- 15:49Speaker 3: With them I need help. I wish more athletes had that.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Kind of human side of them, that they would be admitting, Hey, yes,
- 15:57Speaker 2: I need some help with something here. You know, I
- 15:59Speaker 2: don't know it just it would add a lot more
- 16:01Speaker 2: humanity to sports rather than the arresting side of things
- 16:04Speaker 2: that we're seeing in the gambling scandal, as.
- 16:06Speaker 4: It really would, and it would just help oh so
- 16:09Speaker 4: much to just make us see the good side of
- 16:11Speaker 4: sports for once in any age. That is just filled
- 16:13Speaker 4: with so much negativity.
- 16:17Speaker 2: So to anybody out there with these kidney issues, just know,
- 16:23Speaker 2: if Nick Mango can take care of himself for nineteen years,
- 16:27Speaker 2: that's longevity. Take care of yourself and be able to
- 16:29Speaker 2: be around for nineteen years and you think, I mean,
- 16:33Speaker 2: you get pretty beat up on a football field, so
- 16:35Speaker 2: we had to overcome that too and taking care of
- 16:37Speaker 2: this chronic kidney. And I'm wondering what the disorder was,
- 16:41Speaker 2: the genetic was, because I'm not going to research this.
- 16:46Speaker 3: And report more on it because we should.
- 16:48Speaker 2: We should, we should build an awareness campaign on this
- 16:52Speaker 2: because I'm sure whatever he had people have it too.
- 16:55Speaker 3: They just don't talk about it.
- 16:57Speaker 2: And I feel like the more you open up about
- 16:58Speaker 2: this stuff, the more clear your head's going to be,
- 17:02Speaker 2: the more you'll feel at peace with it. Maybe that's
- 17:04Speaker 2: what maybe he also felt with that piece. While I
- 17:06Speaker 2: needed help, he was at the point where he was
- 17:08Speaker 2: at peace.
- 17:09Speaker 3: With what he was having. You know, I think that
- 17:10Speaker 3: could have been it too. So I am.
- 17:16Speaker 2: I needed to get this out there and just talk
- 17:18Speaker 2: about it because it just wraps me up to keep
- 17:24Speaker 2: holding on strong with my own stuff. But I mean,
- 17:29Speaker 2: I Gemini literally wrote that I have one kidney. I
- 17:34Speaker 2: don't remember talking about that on the year, but I
- 17:36Speaker 2: guess I did.
- 17:36Speaker 3: At one point. So it's just this connectivity I have.
- 17:41Speaker 3: And that's the other thing.
- 17:42Speaker 2: When these players talk about it, you start to feel
- 17:44Speaker 2: a connection with them instantly, like, oh my god, I
- 17:47Speaker 2: have what he has or he has, you know what
- 17:49Speaker 2: I mean. It's just there, there's an instant connection, and
- 17:51Speaker 2: I I don't know if i'd feel tied to him
- 17:55Speaker 2: in that way, but I definitely feel like I can
- 17:57Speaker 2: relate to what he was.
- 17:58Speaker 4: Going you know exactly what you said that tide. It's
- 18:02Speaker 4: not necessarily the best word, so to speak, but you know,
- 18:06Speaker 4: you're kind of in the same boat there, so like
- 18:08Speaker 4: you both have a.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Mutual And I can fucking respect what he went through
- 18:12Speaker 2: because I'm sure that kidney issue got worse as he
- 18:15Speaker 2: got older. I mean, that's just part of life, so
- 18:18Speaker 2: to need dialysis that he got, So I can respect
- 18:22Speaker 2: the way he was able to carry himself.
- 18:23Speaker 1: And yeah, agree after all those years of hard nos
- 18:27Speaker 1: football too.
- 18:28Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's beyond before the NFL.
- 18:31Speaker 2: He probably did college stuff too, high school in high school.
- 18:35Speaker 2: So Nick will be missed, But I want to just
- 18:39Speaker 2: say thank you to Nick Mingle for sharing his story,
- 18:42Speaker 2: even though it was weeks before he passed, the fact
- 18:45Speaker 2: that it's out there now and written about could give
- 18:48Speaker 2: all of us with some kind of kidney issue some
- 18:52Speaker 2: solace that we're not alone and maybe we all connect
- 18:55Speaker 2: more through this, Like maybe this things people with kidney
- 19:01Speaker 2: issues together instead of feeling isolated.
- 19:04Speaker 3: That could be another result of all of his unfortunate passing.
- 19:08Speaker 2: So but we will miss him. I know he was
- 19:11Speaker 2: I think he was still going to football to Jet games,
- 19:13Speaker 2: I'm sure over the years as well. And of course
- 19:15Speaker 2: there was a big Ranger fan, which I didn't really
- 19:17Speaker 2: know until I saw that video of him heckling Penguin's bench,
- 19:21Speaker 2: but oh we.
- 19:21Speaker 1: Else would you see him at the Stadium Series press
- 19:24Speaker 1: conference then, that's especially when the Rangers being involved.
- 19:27Speaker 4: And I was the heck of a Stadium Series game
- 19:29Speaker 4: too that he helped him be an ambassador for, even
- 19:32Speaker 4: though it even though my team was on the business
- 19:37Speaker 4: end of that.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I was still a heck of a game.
- 19:39Speaker 4: Then the last end with that, in hindsight, it just
- 19:44Speaker 4: makes it even more special.
- 19:47Speaker 3: Well, maybe this will be the spark the Jets needed.
- 19:49Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 19:50Speaker 2: I mean there they seem to be really fired up
- 19:55Speaker 2: to win for Nick on on Sunday, and that's that.
- 20:00Speaker 2: But again I'm just saying the airwaves here at the
- 20:03Speaker 2: One Leg Up Network to say thank you Nick man
- 20:05Speaker 2: Gold for not only your contribution as a jet and
- 20:08Speaker 2: the excitement you brought on the field, but now to
- 20:11Speaker 2: add this human side, just because weeks before I think
- 20:15Speaker 2: you might have known you were going to pass, it
- 20:18Speaker 2: opens the door to more conversation about this which we need,
- 20:22Speaker 2: which we definitely need. Thirty million people should not be
- 20:26Speaker 2: suffering with kidney disease alone.
- 20:29Speaker 3: And that's what I'm gonna end with here on the
- 20:31Speaker 3: One Leg Up Network.
- 20:33Speaker 2: And maybe this will breed a champion for people with
- 20:38Speaker 2: kidney diseases that they can speak up more and take
- 20:41Speaker 2: the mantle that I think Nick was trying to set
- 20:44Speaker 2: before he passed.
- 20:45Speaker 3: I mean, he didn't say it for no reason.
- 20:47Speaker 2: He obviouset it for awareness purposes, I would think, in
- 20:50Speaker 2: addition to asking for help.
- 20:51Speaker 3: So we'll have to see.
- 20:53Speaker 2: I'm Alex Garett, One Leg Up Alex, and if you
- 20:58Speaker 2: have kidney issue, use do consult. It's very weird the
- 21:03Speaker 2: timing of this because you don't know this, Ryan, but
- 21:05Speaker 2: all we go is on my doctor's office literally getting
- 21:08Speaker 2: a renal test. Okay, so it's very weird timing Dad
- 21:12Speaker 2: get that and then this happens.
- 21:14Speaker 3: So that's why I'm really it's affecting me a little bit.
- 21:17Speaker 2: So just just got to show we gotta keep on
- 21:20Speaker 2: pushing and keeping taking care of ourselves.
- 21:23Speaker 3: And now Nick sort of blaze that path. And had
- 21:28Speaker 3: we known about it while he played, how interesting would
- 21:31Speaker 3: that have been?
- 21:33Speaker 2: But see, he didn't want us to know about it
- 21:34Speaker 2: while he played. He didn't want that to be the attention.
- 21:36Speaker 2: So that's it for now. I'm gonna get Ryan's links
- 21:40Speaker 2: to all those foundations, and we need to collaborate.
- 21:43Speaker 3: We need to explore this more because kenney disease is
- 21:47Speaker 3: no joke.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Having one kidney and worrying if it's going to fail
- 21:51Speaker 2: on you any minute is no joke. And I can't
- 21:55Speaker 2: imagine what Nick was going through the last few months.
- 21:59Speaker 2: But we miss you now, and we'll have you in
- 22:02Speaker 2: our thoughts and prayers always, and maybe, just maybe we'll
- 22:07Speaker 2: take the mantel from here and really bring awareness that
- 22:10Speaker 2: you tried to.
- 22:11Speaker 3: Bring two weeks ago.
- 22:14Speaker 2: God rests the soul of Nick Mangold at the very
- 22:17Speaker 2: very young age of forty one,
