- 0:05SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Writer, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for creative success.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: The history of writing is replete with stories about authors who were rejected but kept on trying until they found success.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: Here's just one example.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: A number of years ago, an aspiring author decided he wanted to write a book about the key decisions that determined personal success, except he didn't want to write it in a traditional nonfiction book format.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Instead, he wanted to teach the concepts in the form of a story.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: He spent a year writing the book, then proceeded to submit it to a publisher.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: It was rejected, so he moved on to the next publisher.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: Rejected again.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: The author tried a third and a fourth time.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Still more rejection.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Pretty soon he worked his way up to a dozen rejections.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Still no dice.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: So he kept pushing forward, submitting the book to more publishers.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: This went on for another dozen rejections, then another dozen, and another dozen still.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Then after spending three and a half years and getting rejected by 51 publishers, he struck gold when Thomas Nelson Publishers gave him the green light.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: That book was the traveler's gift, and the author was Andy Andrews, whose books have now sold over three million copies worldwide.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Andy Andrews tried 52 times before he got what he wanted.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Now this may sound like an extreme example, but the story of persevering in the face of obstacles is really common in the publishing world.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Even if you're self-publishing, you'll face challenges, setbacks, and problems that require you to dig down deep and keep moving when things are not going your way.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: The historical novelist James Mitchner once said, character consists of what you do on the third and fourth tries.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: There are a lot of writers with talent, but not all of those writers have the character and discipline to keep going in the face of rejection.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: How about you?
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: What are you up against in your writing?
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Are you willing to be persistent?
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: And how many times are you willing to try?
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: Because you may not have success on the third or fourth tries.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: It might just take 52.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Well, thanks so much for listening to this episode.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: I hope you enjoyed that story.
