- 0:11Hello, Hello, friends. It's Sean here.
- 0:13It's Tuesday. It's the 4th of March.
- 0:17Thank you for coming back. Coming back.
- 0:19If you were here yesterday, you read with me a a really
- 0:23challenging reading where the northern Israeli Kingdom is
- 0:27destroyed and taken into exile and just disappeared into the
- 0:31void of the Assyrian Empire. And have you ever wondered why
- 0:37when we read the Gospels, people hated the Sumerians and they
- 0:40thought that they were so, so far below the Israelites?
- 0:44Well, that's because of the fact that these are the people who
- 0:48came into the land of Israel and they were taught to to worship
- 0:52God, but they were not people of the tribe of Israel.
- 0:55And they attempted to worship God but didn't really quite get
- 0:59it right and mixed it with all of the traditions that that came
- 1:03from the different homelands. Which is why the people of
- 1:07Israel in Jesus time were so down on them for for having no
- 1:11idea how to worship God. So that's a little background
- 1:14context for you. And today we continue in the
- 1:17story when Israel has fallen and now Assyria comes knocking on
- 1:22the door of Judah. And how will they respond?
- 1:26Will the king give in to the the requests and the threats of this
- 1:30giant empire on his northern border?
- 1:34Or will he listen to the advice of God?
- 1:37Let's find out as we read together Second Kings Chapter
- 1:4018. Hezekiah, son of Ahaz, began to
- 1:54rule over Judah in the third year of King Hoshaya's reign in
- 1:57Israel. He was 25 years old when he
- 2:01became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem 29 years.
- 2:05His mother was Abijah, the daughter of Zechariah.
- 2:09He did what was pleasing in the Lord's sight, just as his
- 2:12ancestor David had done. He removed the Pagan shrines,
- 2:17smashed the sacred pillars, and cut down the ashrapoles.
- 2:21He broke up the bronze serpent that Moses had made because the
- 2:25people of Israel had been offering sacrifices to it.
- 2:28The bronze serpent was called Nahushtan.
- 2:32Hezekiah trusted in the Lord, the God of Israel.
- 2:36There was no one like him among all the kings of Judah, either
- 2:40before or after his time. He remained faithful to the Lord
- 2:44in everything, and he carefully obeyed all the commands the Lord
- 2:48had given Moses. So the Lord was with him, and
- 2:51Hezekiah was successful in everything he did.
- 2:55He revolted against the king of Assyria and refused to pay him
- 2:58tribute. He also conquered the
- 3:01Philistines as far distant as Gaza and its territory from
- 3:05their smallest outpost to their largest walled city.
- 3:09During the fourth year of Hezekiah's reign, which was the
- 3:127th year of King Hoshaya's reign in Israel, King Shalmanesa of
- 3:16Assyria attacked the city of Samaria and began a siege
- 3:20against it. Three years later, during the
- 3:236th year of King Hezekiah's reign and the 9th year of King
- 3:27Hoshaya's reign in Israel, Samaria fell.
- 3:31At that time, the king of Assyria exiled the Israelites to
- 3:34Assyria and placed them in colonies in Hallah, along the
- 3:38banks of the Habor River, in Gozan, and in the cities of the
- 3:42Medes. For they refused to listen to
- 3:45the Lord their God and obey Him. Instead, they violated His
- 3:49covenant, all the laws that Moses, the Lord's servant, had
- 3:53commanded them to obey. In the 14th year of King
- 3:57Hezekiah's reign, King Sennacherib of Assyria came to
- 4:01attack the fortified towns of Judah and conquered them.
- 4:06King Hezekiah sent this message to the king of Assyria at
- 4:10Lakish. I have done wrong.
- 4:13I will pay whatever tribute money you demand if you will
- 4:16only withdraw. The king of Assyria then
- 4:19demanded a settlement of more than 11 tonnes of silver and one
- 4:24tonne of gold. To gather this amount, King
- 4:28Hezekiah used all the silver stored in the Temple of the Lord
- 4:32and in the palace treasury. Hezekiah even stripped the gold
- 4:36from the doors of the Lord's temple and from the door posts
- 4:39he had overlaid with gold, and he gave it all to the Assyrian
- 4:42king. Nevertheless, the king of
- 4:46Assyria sent his commander in chief, his field commander and
- 4:50his chief of staff from Lakish with a huge army to confront
- 4:54King Hezekiah in Jerusalem. The Assyrians took up a position
- 4:59beside the aqueduct that feeds water into the upper pool near
- 5:03the road leading to the field where cloth is washed.
- 5:06They summoned King Hezekiah, but the king sent these officials to
- 5:10meet with them. Eliakim son of Hilkiah the
- 5:14palace administrator, Shebna the court secretary, and Joah son of
- 5:19Asaph, the royal historian. Then the Assyrian King's chief
- 5:24of staff told them to give this message to Hezekiah.
- 5:28This is what the great king of Assyria says.
- 5:32What are you trusting in that makes you so confident?
- 5:36Do you think that mere words can substitute for military skill
- 5:40and strength? Who are you counting on that you
- 5:43have rebelled against me on Egypt?
- 5:47If you lean on Egypt, it would be like a Reed that splinters
- 5:51beneath your weight and pierces your hand.
- 5:54Pharaoh, the king of Egypt is completely unreliable.
- 5:58But perhaps you will say to me, we are trusting in the Lord our
- 6:01God. But isn't he the one who was
- 6:04insulted by Hezekiah? Didn't Hezekiah tear down his
- 6:08shrines and altars and make everyone in Judah and Jerusalem
- 6:12worship only at the altar here in Jerusalem?
- 6:16I'll tell you what strike a bargain with my master, the king
- 6:20of Assyria. I will give you 2000 horses if
- 6:24you can find that many men to ride on them with your tiny
- 6:28army. How can you think of challenging
- 6:31even the weakest contingent of my master's troops, even with
- 6:34the help of Egypt's Chariots and charioteers?
- 6:38What's more, do you think we have invaded your land without
- 6:42the Lord's direction? The Lord himself told us, attack
- 6:46this land and destroy it. Then Alaikim son of Hilkia,
- 6:51Shebna and Joah said to the Assyrian chief of staff, Please
- 6:56speak to us in Aramaic, for we understand it well.
- 6:59Don't speak in Hebrew, for the people on the wall will hear.
- 7:04But Sir Nacarib's chief of staff replied, Do you think my master
- 7:09sent this message only to you and your master?
- 7:12He wants all the people to hear it, for when he put this city
- 7:17under siege, they will suffer along with you.
- 7:20They will be so hungry and thirsty that they will eat their
- 7:24own dung and drink their own urine.
- 7:29Then the chief of staff stood and shouted in Hebrew to the
- 7:32people on the wall. Listen to this message from the
- 7:35great king of Assyria. This is what the king says.
- 7:40Don't let Hezekiah deceive you. He will never be able to rescue
- 7:44you from my power. Don't let him fool you into
- 7:48trusting in the Lord by saying the Lord will surely rescue us.
- 7:52This city will never fall into the hands of the Assyrian king.
- 7:57Don't listen to Hezekiah. These are the terms the king of
- 8:01Assyria is offering. Make peace with me, open the
- 8:05gates and come out. Then each of you can continue
- 8:09eating from your own Grapevine and fig tree and drinking from
- 8:13your own well. Then I will arrange to take you
- 8:16to another land like this one, a land of grain and a new wine,
- 8:20bread and vineyards, olive Groves and honey.
- 8:24Choose life instead of death. Don't listen to Hezekiah when he
- 8:30tries to mislead you by saying the Lord will rescue us.
- 8:34Have the gods of the other nations ever saved their people
- 8:37from the king of Assyria? What happened to the gods of
- 8:41Hamath or Arpad? And what about the gods of
- 8:44Sephavaim, Haina, and IVA? Did any God rescue Samaria from
- 8:50my power? What God of any nation has ever
- 8:55been able to save its people from my power?
- 8:57So what makes you think that the Lord can rescue Jerusalem from
- 9:01me? But the people were silent and
- 9:05did not utter a word because Hezekiah had commanded them.
- 9:09Do not answer him. Then Alaikim son of Hilkiah the
- 9:15palace administrator, Shebner, the court secretary, and Joah
- 9:19son of Asaph, the royal historian, went back to
- 9:22Hezekiah. They tore their clothes in
- 9:26despair and they went to see the king and told him what the
- 9:29Assyrian chief of staff had said.
- 9:41Oh Lord, what? What a phenomenal test of faith
- 9:45this is for all involved in this story.
- 9:48When they confronted with what seems like overwhelming odds
- 9:53that there's no way they can possibly escape.
- 9:56But you just surrender to a God and Lord other than you, Lord.
- 10:01Oh, the temptation is so real. Lord, I pray that you would
- 10:07boister our faith, that You would increase our hearts
- 10:12capacity to rest in You so that as we live our day to day lives,
- 10:17as we go through today and we are pulled in a direction away
- 10:23from You, that we can continually be faithful and
- 10:29consistent in our faith and worship of You.
- 10:33Because you are our God and you are different from every other
- 10:37God in that You alone are the God of the universe.
- 10:41And so we fall before you on our knees in worship and service to
- 10:47you alone, our mighty God, our glorious King and our loving
- 10:55Saviour. And we pray all of this through
- 10:58that loving, saving name of Jesus, Amen.
