- Lucas: We’ve spent a lot of time talking about the grand architecture of Istanbul and the military brilliance of Mustafa Kemal, but there’s a quieter, more painful chapter in 1923 that defines the modern map of Turkey. It wasn’t just about drawing lines on a map; it was about moving millions of people to fit those lines. Luna: The population exchange? Lucas: Exactly. When the Treaty of Lausanne was signed in July 1923, it formally ended the Greek-Turkish War, but its most famous clause mandated the compulsory exchange of minorities. Roughly 1.1 million Orthodox Christians were sent from Turkey to Greece, and about 400,000 Muslims went the other way. Lucas: It sounds efficient on paper, like a bureaucratic solution to a messy political problem, but for the families involved, it was the total obliteration of their ancestral homes. Luna: Did they have any choice in the matter? Lucas: None at all. The agreement, negotiated by Ismet İnönü for Turkey and Nikolaos Mavrogenidis for Greece, defined citizenship by religion rather than geography. If you were Orthodox Christian living in Anatolia, you were Turkish-citizen-by-birth but Greek-national-by-law, and vice versa for Muslims in Thrace and Athens. Lucas: This included groups who had lived in the region for over two thousand years, like the Pontic Greeks from the Black Sea coast or the Cappadocian Greeks from central Anatolia. They weren't recent arrivals; they were part of the fabric of the land itself. Luna: What happened to the properties they left behind? Lucas: That was the real tragedy. The treaty theoretically allowed people to sell their assets before leaving, but the timeline was so compressed—often just weeks—that few could get fair value. Most simply abandoned their homes, farms, and businesses, leaving them to be absorbed into the state treasury or redistributed to incoming refugees. Lucas: Imagine waking up in a new country, speaking a different dialect, surrounded by strangers, while your childhood home sits empty somewhere else in Europe. Luna: And this applied to everyone, even in Istanbul? Lucas: Mostly, yes. But Istanbul was a special case because of its strategic importance and the presence of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The treaty made an exception for the Greek community in Istanbul and the Muslim community in Western Thrace, allowing them to remain. However, this 'exception' would later become a source of significant tension and discrimination. Luna: So the city didn't become purely Turkish overnight? Lucas: It remained remarkably diverse for a few more decades. You still had Armenian, Jewish, Greek, and Levantine communities thriving in neighborhoods like Balat and Kasımpaşa. But the psychological shift was immense. The idea of a homogeneous Turkish nation-state began to take hold, and diversity started to be viewed with suspicion. Lucas: The incoming refugees from Greece, known as muhacirs, brought with them a deep sense of loss and a desire for stability. They settled in vacant houses across Anatolia, often in villages that had been depopulated during the earlier waves of violence. Luna: How did they integrate with the local population? Lucas: It varied wildly. In some places, the newcomers and locals blended seamlessly, sharing agricultural knowledge and cultural traditions. In others, there was friction. The locals might view the Greeks as collaborators or outsiders, while the Greeks viewed the Turks as conquerors. Language barriers were also huge; many Cappadocian Greeks spoke a distinct dialect that was unintelligible to standard Turkish speakers. Lucas: Yet, within a generation, these distinctions faded. The shared trauma of displacement created a new, unified refugee identity that eventually merged into the broader Turkish national consciousness. Luna: What about the Jews in Istanbul? Were they affected too? Lucas: Jews were generally exempt from the population exchange because they were not considered Orthodox Christians. Many Jewish families in Izmir and Istanbul stayed, continuing their centuries-old traditions. However, the atmosphere changed. With the removal of the Greek minority, the Jewish community found themselves in a smaller, more vulnerable position, though they largely avoided the violent upheavals faced by their neighbors. Luna: Did the exchange actually achieve peace? Lucas: In the short term, yes. By removing the 'minority question,' Atatürk’s government believed they had eliminated a pretext for foreign intervention. Greece and Turkey stopped fighting. But the underlying resentment didn't disappear; it just went underground, preserved in oral histories and family memories for decades. Lucas: For many historians, the population exchange is seen as the last great act of the Ottoman Empire's dissolution and the definitive birth pangs of the Republic. It was a brutal method of nation-building that prioritized homogeneity over pluralism. Luna: It feels like a heavy price for stability. Lucas: Absolutely. And it set a precedent. Later conflicts in Cyprus and elsewhere would echo these patterns of forced displacement and demographic engineering. The map we see today is a direct result of those decisions made in Lausanne. Lucas: As we walk along the Bosphorus now, looking at the skyline that includes both the Hagia Sophia and modern skyscrapers, remember that every stone holds a story of someone who arrived and someone who left. Luna: A city built on layers of departure and arrival. Lucas: Precisely. Before we go further into the economic reforms of the 1920s, I want to mention something important about how we make this show. Luna: Right, the support model. Lucas: We deliberately don't run ads on these episodes because we want the content to stand on its own merit, without interruption or commercial influence. If you find value in these deep dives into history, the link is buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: It really helps keep the research thorough and the production clean. Lucas: It does, and it allows us to continue exploring these complex topics without compromise. Thank you for considering that support as we move forward. Luna: Let's get back to the economic side of things. Lucas: Good. So, after the population exchange, the new Republic faced a devastated economy. The war had destroyed infrastructure, and the influx of refugees created an urgent need for housing and employment. Atatürk turned to his inner circle, particularly İsmet İnönü, to stabilize the currency. Lucas: They established the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey in 1930, but before that, they relied on a chaotic mix of currencies. The Turkish lira was introduced, but inflation was rampant. The government tried to encourage domestic industry through tariffs, isolating Turkey from global markets somewhat. Luna: Was that isolation intentional? Lucas: Partially. They wanted to reduce dependence on foreign powers, especially Britain and France, who had controlled much of the Ottoman debt. The idea was self-sufficiency. They promoted Turkish merchants and entrepreneurs, trying to fill the vacuum left by the departing Greek and Armenian business elites. Lucas: But it was difficult. The skills and capital that had left were hard to replace quickly. Many small businesses struggled, and the rural economy, which employed the majority of the population, remained largely traditional and inefficient. Luna: So progress was slow? Lucas: Very slow. It wasn't until the Second Five-Year Plan in the late 1930s that the state took a more direct role in industrialization, building factories for textiles, sugar, and cement. But in the early 1920s, it was a period of survival, not growth. Luna: A time of rebuilding from scratch. Lucas: Exactly. And amidst this economic struggle, the cultural revolution was accelerating. Schools were closing mosques, women's rights were being expanded, and the Latin alphabet was replacing Arabic script. All of this was happening while people were still trying to find food and shelter. Lucas: It’s a testament to the resilience of the Turkish people that they managed to lay the foundations of a modern state under such extreme pressure. Luna: Resilience born out of necessity. Lucas: Indeed. One thing remains to be explored: how did this rapid modernization affect the daily lives of ordinary women in the countryside? Luna: That seems like a crucial next step.
