Speaker 2: Community Technical College, doctor Casey sachss Here. How you doing.
2:41
Speaker 4: Good morning, Dave. I'm wonderful. How are you.
2:43
Speaker 2: I'm doing fine. Always a pleasure to have you in studio.
2:45
Speaker 2: We talked to you a couple of times a month.
2:47
Speaker 4: So I have to tell everybody who can't see you,
2:50
Speaker 4: watching you read the news or the updates is like
2:53
Speaker 4: watching a YouTube video on double speed.
2:56
Speaker 2: It's is that is that good it is.
2:59
Speaker 4: I watch on my YouTube videos on double speed. No
3:01
Speaker 4: one talks fast enough. It's really a treat.
3:03
Speaker 1: I see that.
3:04
Speaker 2: I have been task I mean I've been burdened with
3:07
Speaker 2: that ever since i started this year. You know, career career,
3:11
Speaker 2: air quotes, career years ago is the real career. If
3:14
Speaker 2: I do talk, I do talk too fast, especially when
3:17
Speaker 2: I'm on the air, and I've had people have reached
3:19
Speaker 2: out to me. But after almost thirty eight years of this,
3:22
Speaker 2: it's kind of hard not to. But I'm not Dale Cooper.
3:25
Speaker 2: Dale Cooper, the boss here actually talks more bester than
3:29
Speaker 2: I do, so put him on YouTube. But thanks for
3:32
Speaker 2: making me really self conscious about it.
3:34
Speaker 4: Oh, I mean it in a bad way. It's just
3:36
Speaker 4: that most people don't get to watch you, and it's
3:39
Speaker 4: it's fun. It's really a treat.
3:41
Speaker 2: Okay, all right, Well it's kind of like, you know,
3:43
Speaker 2: watching a caged monkey. You know, you don't know what's
3:45
Speaker 2: going to happen next, spitting all over himself or something. Right,
3:49
Speaker 2: all right, the first time we've had you on in
3:52
Speaker 2: the new year, Do you have a good, happy New yon,
3:54
Speaker 2: good holiday season?
3:55
Speaker 5: And one?
3:55
Speaker 4: Yeah, it's always the best. Nice to spend time with
3:58
Speaker 4: family and eat.
3:59
Speaker 2: As you guess. So, yeah, but now you guys are
4:00
Speaker 2: back at it. I mean you never really stop at
4:02
Speaker 2: Bridge Valley, but you're back at it again.
4:05
Speaker 4: Right. School has started. The parking lot's full. It's a
4:07
Speaker 4: lot of fun to have school be started.
4:09
Speaker 2: Yeah, and when did it actually start?
4:10
Speaker 4: Wednesday?
4:11
Speaker 2: And it started this past Monday. Okay, that seemed to
4:13
Speaker 2: be like the more common starting dates for a lot
4:16
Speaker 2: of institutes of higher learning at a WV and Marshall
4:19
Speaker 2: and probably others started on Monday as well.
4:21
Speaker 4: Yeah, several. It's the right time of year, you know.
4:23
Speaker 2: Yeah itios. I want to talk about some of your
4:26
Speaker 2: health programs and some other select programs you got go now.
4:29
Speaker 2: You told me you're doing open applications through the end
4:32
Speaker 2: of the month, explaining on the aplenty specifically.
4:34
Speaker 4: Something that people don't always realize is that we have
4:38
Speaker 4: a limited number of space in a variety of healthcare programs.
4:41
Speaker 4: Rad Tech's a great example. The accrediting agency only lets
4:44
Speaker 4: us take twenty three students with the size that we are,
4:47
Speaker 4: and that's for a variety of reasons. A lot of
4:50
Speaker 4: it's based on how many clinical spots we can get
4:53
Speaker 4: in the community at our hospitals, you have to have
4:55
Speaker 4: access to machines, you have to have a really small class.
4:59
Speaker 4: So there's a lot of rules that come along with
5:01
Speaker 4: several health programs. So if you're thinking right now, gosh,
5:05
Speaker 4: I would really like to go into rad tech or
5:08
Speaker 4: do ultrasound or.
5:10
Speaker 2: Rad tech radiology, that's right radiology.
5:14
Speaker 4: If you want to do those things and you're thinking, gosh,
5:16
Speaker 4: I might start my classes in fall of twenty six,
5:20
Speaker 4: right now is actually the time to start thinking about
5:23
Speaker 4: that and to apply that. Our applications right now for
5:25
Speaker 4: those programs are actually do at the end of February,
5:28
Speaker 4: and so it's worth making sure folks just know that
5:30
Speaker 4: that's going on. Gives you some time to plan and
5:33
Speaker 4: to get everything in that you need to.
5:35
Speaker 2: Now, how does one go about getting applications on the
5:36
Speaker 2: website or rich.
5:37
Speaker 4: Valley dot edu. That's sort of the source of all
5:40
Speaker 4: truth and.
5:40
Speaker 2: Light, the source of all truth and light. I like it,
5:44
Speaker 2: b I CSI this c bisky.
5:48
Speaker 4: If my if my team's listening and they call me
5:50
Speaker 4: and say I'm doing it wrong, that is also possible. Okay,
5:54
Speaker 4: So the way they've described this to me is hooking
5:58
Speaker 4: up fiber Optic Cable are the only certified training program
6:01
Speaker 4: in the entire state. It's not super long. You can
6:04
Speaker 4: do this in a few weeks and you get certified,
6:07
Speaker 4: and then you go work for any of the installation
6:10
Speaker 4: companies that are interested in hiring people who can help
6:14
Speaker 4: make sure that West Virginia is connected. So some of
6:16
Speaker 4: the federal dollars that have come in when you hear
6:19
Speaker 4: about high speed internet, when you hear about cable lines
6:21
Speaker 4: being run, you need people who have fly certific certification.
6:26
Speaker 4: And you can think of it like this. You take
6:29
Speaker 4: a wire that has one hundred and twenty pieces of
6:31
Speaker 4: hair and you connect it to another wire with one
6:33
Speaker 4: hundred and twenty pieces of hair, and you need certification
6:36
Speaker 4: for that. So it's a short term certificate. It leads
6:40
Speaker 4: everybody who does these all they're all hired, which is
6:43
Speaker 4: really nice. That's an important thing to us. And classes
6:47
Speaker 4: start in mid February sixteenth, right around Valentine's Day.
6:51
Speaker 2: So if and that's the interest thing that I love
6:53
Speaker 2: about this, Doctor Sax is when you say that, when
6:56
Speaker 2: you say everybody's.
6:57
Speaker 4: Hired, Yeah, you complete the training program and then you
7:00
Speaker 4: go to work, and then you go to work.
7:01
Speaker 2: I mean it's unlike some other degrees, and it's some
7:04
Speaker 2: institutions you're included where Okay, you you graduate and then
7:09
Speaker 2: you send out resumes and you apply, and you know what,
7:12
Speaker 2: you got a job waiting on you when you when
7:13
Speaker 2: you graduate.
7:14
Speaker 4: And we do them on purpose because our employers say,
7:17
Speaker 4: we need some new people, so could you do the
7:19
Speaker 4: training program again so that we can hire right.
7:22
Speaker 6: Out of it.
7:22
Speaker 2: And this really is, as you said, all over West
7:24
Speaker 2: Virginian probably all over the country. This is really a
7:27
Speaker 2: growing field. And you can take that and you're going
7:30
Speaker 2: to enter this and maybe like an entry level position
7:32
Speaker 2: or whatever. But I mean, sky's a limit. I mean,
7:35
Speaker 2: it's no pun intended as far as as was what
7:37
Speaker 2: you can do, whether it's above or under or whatever.
7:39
Speaker 4: For sure, I would encourage people who really like this
7:42
Speaker 4: to look at our utility line program, to look at
7:44
Speaker 4: a few things that would be continuing it and more certifications.
7:47
Speaker 4: But it's a it's a terrific opportunity and it's available
7:51
Speaker 4: right now, in only a few weeks. So sometimes people think, gosh,
7:54
Speaker 4: I you know, I want to go to school, but
7:56
Speaker 4: I can't do that for years. So this is one
7:58
Speaker 4: of those Trench's points where it's like, Okay, well I
8:02
Speaker 4: could actually commit to something for several weeks and see
8:04
Speaker 4: if I like that job, and see if I like
8:06
Speaker 4: the aeara.
8:06
Speaker 2: And that's one of the great thing, one of the
8:07
Speaker 2: many great things I love about what you guys are
8:09
Speaker 2: doing out a Bridge Valley is that you are training
8:12
Speaker 2: people to go to work immediately. I mean, you know,
8:15
Speaker 2: they hand you a piece of paper and then they
8:17
Speaker 2: give you, you know, your lunch box or whatever. Being
8:20
Speaker 2: literal about that, but I mean basically, it's like, Okay, congratulations,
8:24
Speaker 2: now show up at seven am tomorrow morning to go
8:26
Speaker 2: to work.
8:26
Speaker 4: I mean, our really our favorites are when we find
8:28
Speaker 4: employers in the community who are willing to take our
8:30
Speaker 4: students while they're still in school. Those learn and earn programs,
8:33
Speaker 4: so we split wages with employers who give students meaningful work,
8:37
Speaker 4: and then it lets our students because most of our
8:39
Speaker 4: students have jobs, but what we want is for them
8:42
Speaker 4: to work in their fields. So if you're in our
8:44
Speaker 4: accounting program, we want you to go do the bookkeeping
8:46
Speaker 4: for Moseses Automotive while you're in the accounting program. That's
8:49
Speaker 4: a terrific scenario because then you get that really practical
8:53
Speaker 4: on the job skills training while you're actually in school.
8:56
Speaker 2: And talk about that. The partnerships you have with the
9:00
Speaker 2: businesses here. I know you mentioned one. I know you've
9:02
Speaker 2: got a great relationship with Toyota. I mean you don't
9:05
Speaker 2: need to mention the businesses specifically, because there's way too
9:07
Speaker 2: many to mension, but that those relationships, doctor Saxon, you
9:11
Speaker 2: have with the businesses here in the Kanawh Valley and beyond.
9:14
Speaker 4: We couldn't do what we do at Bridge Valley without
9:16
Speaker 4: our businesses. Our business owners are incredible in this region.
9:20
Speaker 4: They're really committed to helping people who work here be
9:23
Speaker 4: able to live here and work here and get the
9:25
Speaker 4: skills training that they need. They're very interested in our
9:27
Speaker 4: community college students because most of our students are from
9:31
Speaker 4: here and want to stay here, and so sort of
9:33
Speaker 4: the beauty of the entire system is that we've designed
9:36
Speaker 4: programs that exactly meet their needs. So our employers are
9:40
Speaker 4: consistently telling us we need this skill included, or we've
9:44
Speaker 4: changed our business process and so we need you to
9:46
Speaker 4: change your curriculum. And for us, that's just really normal.
9:50
Speaker 4: It's not always really normal for all of my colleague
9:53
Speaker 4: schools across the nation, but at Bridge Valley it's just
9:55
Speaker 4: the way we do business.
9:56
Speaker 2: At a tax here said any type of scholarships or
9:58
Speaker 2: apprenticeships to help with paying.
10:01
Speaker 4: So that's such a good question. The learn and earn
10:04
Speaker 4: that we were just talking about is certainly a good example.
10:07
Speaker 4: It pays people to work in the field that they're studying,
10:11
Speaker 4: so that's an immediate good one. It means working with
10:14
Speaker 4: our Career Services department and talking to them about you know,
10:18
Speaker 4: I mean the accounting program, who's who has a book
10:21
Speaker 4: keeping We don't call them apprenticeships because apprenticeship has a
10:24
Speaker 4: really technical federal definition, but it's on the job training
10:27
Speaker 4: where you get paid to work in your field. There's
10:32
Speaker 4: lots of scholarship programs available. West Virginia is actually incredibly
10:36
Speaker 4: generous with state financial aid. When we compare West Virginia
10:39
Speaker 4: to many surrounding states. West Virginia does a really good
10:42
Speaker 4: job in this area. My criticism would be that we
10:45
Speaker 4: could use our state elected officials to collapse some of
10:48
Speaker 4: those programs into just one thing. It would be much
10:50
Speaker 4: easier to tell students here's what we have for you,
10:53
Speaker 4: But instead everyone gets treated as an individual and so
10:55
Speaker 4: it means we really have to sort through, given your
10:58
Speaker 4: circumstances and what education maybe you already have, and what's
11:02
Speaker 4: going on with you, here's what the financial aid package
11:04
Speaker 4: looks like.
11:05
Speaker 2: All right, So the session is getting underway.
11:07
Speaker 4: You know, wouldn't it be fun if they would work
11:09
Speaker 4: on that.
11:10
Speaker 2: Twelve o'clock today, And of course the governor gives his
11:12
Speaker 2: stay of the state tonight and then they'll really get
11:14
Speaker 2: down to today's pretty much ceremonial. Can we anticipate you
11:17
Speaker 2: and other folks from higher learning? I know the you know,
11:20
Speaker 2: the West Virginia University, Marshall's WESTERNI you stay, they're all there,
11:22
Speaker 2: but you will also be at some point a couple
11:25
Speaker 2: of times, probably on the on the Capitol complex.
11:27
Speaker 4: Our chancellor has talked to some elected officials about what
11:32
Speaker 4: could a combined financial aid program look like. I haven't
11:36
Speaker 4: seen any introduced legislation, so.
11:37
Speaker 2: Okay, we'll see if you're listening, legislator or I know, if.
11:41
Speaker 4: You're an election official and you want a project, we
11:43
Speaker 4: should talk.
11:44
Speaker 2: Do what the doctor says. Okay, follow up on that
11:47
Speaker 2: other text, any businesses that offer paying loans as part
11:50
Speaker 2: of their salary packages?
11:52
Speaker 4: Huh, I'm less of an expert at that. There are
11:54
Speaker 4: definitely businesses that do that.
11:56
Speaker 7: I know.
11:56
Speaker 4: The one that comes to mind immediately is WU Medicine
11:59
Speaker 4: Time Hospital that if you are a nurse, there's a
12:03
Speaker 4: lot that they do to either bring in nurses or
12:05
Speaker 4: upskill nurses healthcare, especially in some of those critical need areas.
12:10
Speaker 4: But it's not something that I can just rattle of the.
12:12
Speaker 2: Okay, well that's fine, and we have you on a
12:14
Speaker 2: couple of times a month. We'll come back and we'll
12:15
Speaker 2: have that art. We'll try to remind each other between
12:18
Speaker 2: now and next. All right, another question, you're popular great.
12:22
Speaker 2: Any age limit for scholarships.
12:25
Speaker 4: There's not an age limit for scholarships. It's a terrific question.
12:28
Speaker 4: We our average age at Bridge Valley is.
12:30
Speaker 2: Twenty nine, so we which is a little older, I
12:33
Speaker 2: would think.
12:34
Speaker 4: So it's what's considered a non traditional student is what
12:37
Speaker 4: we call it in the business. But at Bridge Valley
12:40
Speaker 4: that is our traditional students. So it's folks who aren't
12:44
Speaker 4: right out of high school. They've generally had some work experience.
12:48
Speaker 4: But I can think of a student right now. I'm
12:51
Speaker 4: thinking of a young woman, a young woman in particular,
12:53
Speaker 4: who is pushing seventy and thinking about you know, I
12:57
Speaker 4: want a new job and i don't like what I've
12:58
Speaker 4: been doing, and I'm ready for something else. So we
13:01
Speaker 4: really do get the whole spectrum. I think our youngest
13:04
Speaker 4: right now on campus is sixteen. Okay, so sixteen to
13:07
Speaker 4: seventy is a pretty big range.
13:08
Speaker 2: All right, final question, and we've only got about thirty
13:10
Speaker 2: forty five seconds here. The WIN Academy is getting national
13:14
Speaker 2: attention and you're going to have an open house about
13:16
Speaker 2: the Wind Academy.
13:16
Speaker 4: So the WIN Academy is our early college, public early
13:19
Speaker 4: college charter high school at Bridge Valley. It's for students
13:23
Speaker 4: who are interested in nursing or advance manufacturing, and so
13:27
Speaker 4: they come in and we sequence all of their high
13:29
Speaker 4: school classes to align with those program areas. It's been
13:32
Speaker 4: really popular, and our last open house we had forty
13:35
Speaker 4: folks come in and try and figure out is this
13:37
Speaker 4: right for me? And is this the kind of high
13:39
Speaker 4: school I want to be in? And so Win Academy
13:41
Speaker 4: open house is coming up January twenty second. It's from
13:44
Speaker 4: five to seven in the evening and if you are
13:47
Speaker 4: a junior or senior or a rising junior and senior
13:49
Speaker 4: in high school and you think this might be a
13:51
Speaker 4: good fit for you. Come in. You can bring the
13:53
Speaker 4: adult who you love in your life. If you want
13:55
Speaker 4: to have somebody else, come vet us with you, but
13:59
Speaker 4: bring your kids, your grandkids. What we found is some
14:01
Speaker 4: of our best recruiters or grandma's who have said, I
14:05
Speaker 4: know you want to be a nurse, and this is
14:06
Speaker 4: a great opportunity.
14:07
Speaker 2: All right, I'm gonna give you an assignment. Okay, I
14:09
Speaker 2: have this is your second assignment at some point. Now,
14:12
Speaker 2: how does it feel? I like her, Leslie Nielsen said,
14:14
Speaker 2: of an ached gun. The shoes on the other hand,
14:16
Speaker 2: now that's all right, all right, so as well at
14:19
Speaker 2: some point, maybe not the next time you hear at
14:20
Speaker 2: some point you mentioned that nearly seventy year old student.
14:24

17:58
Speaker 2: a new magistrate, Judge Ball, when Delbert Rouse, the third
18:01
Speaker 2: to that position, made available due to a previous resignation,
18:05
Speaker 2: he joins, us, does Delbert Rouse the third in studio
18:08
Speaker 2: this morning? Good morning? How are you sir?
18:09
Speaker 6: Doing well? Mister Holland thank you for having me.
18:12
Speaker 2: You can stop with the mister al okay, all right,
18:13
Speaker 2: do it, but I do appreciate you being here. So
18:16
Speaker 2: you were appointed to fill a vacancy as a a
18:19
Speaker 2: vacant position magistrate here in Kanawah County s went in
18:22
Speaker 2: last week. What made you want to step up to
18:24
Speaker 2: be considered for the position.
18:26
Speaker 14: I've always had a interest in the court system, even
18:30
Speaker 14: when I was a young kid. Started out law enforcement.
18:38
Speaker 14: It was a deputy share for twenty six years with
18:40
Speaker 14: the Connall County Sheriff's Office, went up through the ranks.
18:44
Speaker 6: I completed at the end of my time.
18:49
Speaker 14: When I decided to retire, I was a lieutenant shift
18:52
Speaker 14: commander on road patrol, and you worked four months a
18:58
Speaker 14: day shift, four months of night shift. And in my
19:01
Speaker 14: twenties it was easy to do midnight shifts and everything
19:06
Speaker 14: to do at midnight, Yeah, you know, and kick indoors
19:09
Speaker 14: and chase chase people. But uh, but now I had
19:15
Speaker 14: worked for Judge Bloom for several years, uh as his bailiff,
19:21
Speaker 14: and while I was in the courthouse, you know, I
19:23
Speaker 14: was able to observe how he did things.
19:28
Speaker 8: Uh.
19:28
Speaker 6: Of course, being a.
19:31
Speaker 14: Law enforcement officer on the road, I had court in
19:34
Speaker 14: front of several magistrates and uh. I always thought, man,
19:38
Speaker 14: you know, it would be really nice when I retire
19:42
Speaker 14: if I had the opportunity to run for magistrate.
19:45
Speaker 10: Uh.
19:47
Speaker 14: You know, you're just not dealing with criminal actions, you're
19:51
Speaker 14: dealing with civil actions also, And I feel that I
19:56
Speaker 14: could always be just fair and partial when it comes
20:02
Speaker 14: to people's cases. The reason I know this is because
20:07
Speaker 14: when I was on the road, we go to calls,
20:08
Speaker 14: and I'm on one calls no matter what they were,
20:11
Speaker 14: I was always fair, just and im partial. And I
20:18
Speaker 14: think that's important when you're dealing with the public, and
20:21
Speaker 14: I've always had a strong will to want to help people.
20:27
Speaker 14: And you know, it's a different roles and you know,
20:31
Speaker 14: I'm looking forward to it and I'm excited about becoming
20:34
Speaker 14: a magistrate.
20:35
Speaker 2: It is certainly not, you know, required that you be
20:38
Speaker 2: a law enforcement officer to be a magistrate, but there
20:40
Speaker 2: have been several in other areas that have done what
20:43
Speaker 2: you're doing. Now, what kind of an experience, what kind
20:45
Speaker 2: of a looking back in your career in law law
20:48
Speaker 2: enforcement for so many years, what does that what extra
20:52
Speaker 2: does that help you bring to the table, Because, as
20:54
Speaker 2: you said, you have been doing those things that the
20:56
Speaker 2: that the police officers on patrol and as you said,
20:59
Speaker 2: kicking indoors and things of that nature. You you've done
21:01
Speaker 2: all that in the past. What what does that help?
21:03
Speaker 2: How does that help you in your new role.
21:05
Speaker 14: Well, and when I was running a shift, I had
21:08
Speaker 14: a really good shift, but uh, you know, I was
21:12
Speaker 14: always told I was a good supervisor, but I was
21:16
Speaker 14: sometimes probably hard on them because I believe law enforcement
21:19
Speaker 14: officers should be held to a higher standard than the
21:22
Speaker 14: general public.
21:23
Speaker 6: One.
21:24
Speaker 14: Two, I feel like if someone brings me a search
21:28
Speaker 14: more and there's inaccuracies to it. Yeah, that's that's something
21:34
Speaker 14: that's very important. Uh, the paperwork has to be complete,
21:40
Speaker 14: and you know, whether it's a victim or the person
21:44
Speaker 14: being charged.
21:46
Speaker 6: Everybody deserves a fair shake, I guess, is what you
21:49
Speaker 6: could say.
21:50
Speaker 14: And I think, Uh, with the years that I've spent
21:53
Speaker 14: on the road and uh in the courthouse, I could
21:57
Speaker 14: pick those details out.
21:59
Speaker 2: Yeah, talking to Delbla Rosh the third who again is
22:01
Speaker 2: a new magistrate here in kanawh County. And I think
22:04
Speaker 2: it's very important to remember as well. And you brought
22:06
Speaker 2: up a really good point there is that everybody thinks, well,
22:10
Speaker 2: no matter what branch it is in law enforcement of
22:13
Speaker 2: the court system, everybody thinks it's all going to be
22:15
Speaker 2: solved in an hour, you know, because we've seen cs
22:17
Speaker 2: I and we've seen all these shows over the years.
22:20
Speaker 2: But everything that you see is not necessarily criminal. You know,
22:24
Speaker 2: there's a lot of civil stuff. It's not always the
22:26
Speaker 2: exciting stuff, but it's just as important.
22:28
Speaker 14: It's very important. Take this week, I'm scheduled for wrongful occupations.
22:38
Speaker 14: Wrong for occupations are probably a big part of the
22:42
Speaker 14: court system. When someone doesn't pay their rent or they're
22:48
Speaker 14: in a home and they're of course renting. They could
22:52
Speaker 14: go month, two months, three months. Landlord tries to the
22:55
Speaker 14: victim and they'll come in and go to get them out,
23:01
Speaker 14: and there's several steps to doing that. One of the
23:06
Speaker 14: more important things that I feel like to help people
23:11
Speaker 14: is domestic violence, and that, unfortunately is a big thing
23:16
Speaker 14: in Kennall County, domestic violence.
23:18
Speaker 6: And I have seen personally that men and women.
23:26
Speaker 14: When you go and you separate them, they just wanted
23:32
Speaker 14: to end there and not knowing that. You know, some
23:37
Speaker 14: some women that I've encountered have taken years of abuse.
23:42
Speaker 14: And if you can help them, guide them, get them
23:46
Speaker 14: the necessary counseling, I think that's great, you know, kind
23:54
Speaker 14: of shows them how to get.
23:57
Speaker 6: Get away from a bad situation.
24:01
Speaker 2: And you were talking about the you know, the cases
24:04
Speaker 2: that come in front of you, and you mentioned domestic
24:06
Speaker 2: violence and a big part of that and a big
24:08
Speaker 2: part of what you will see as a magistrate and
24:10
Speaker 2: you were in law enforcement, you know, is somehow related
24:13
Speaker 2: to the drug epidemic.
24:15
Speaker 10: You know.
24:15
Speaker 2: I mean I've had people in your position that have
24:18
Speaker 2: told me that, in magistrates in other counties that I'm
24:21
Speaker 2: friends with that have said, you know, if I see
24:23
Speaker 2: ten people, eight of their issues have something to do
24:28
Speaker 2: with addiction. You know, whether it's it's they've stolen something,
24:31
Speaker 2: it's domestic abuse. What you said, that's going to be
24:33
Speaker 2: at the root of a lot of the things that
24:35
Speaker 2: you see from a criminal nature in your courtroom.
24:37
Speaker 14: Yes, yes, sir, you know, like I said, first hand,
24:42
Speaker 14: I've seen and I think if you ask anybody, you know,
24:47
Speaker 14: there's a drug problem here in Kannall County. There's a
24:51
Speaker 14: homeless problem here in Kannall County. A lot of it
24:54
Speaker 14: stems stems from drugs. No matter what area, Crossland, Saint Albans, Charleston,
25:01
Speaker 14: the East end of Kanawha County. Unfortunately, it's everywhere. And
25:06
Speaker 14: I think that the drug epidemic, people start doing drugs
25:11
Speaker 14: and some of these drugs that they're taking. And I'm
25:14
Speaker 14: not a doctor, I'm just throwing it out there that
25:18
Speaker 14: you know, probably leads to mineral illness that we have
25:21
Speaker 14: to deal with and people are looking for fixes. So
25:28
Speaker 14: that leads to people stealing stuff, stealing copper, stealing stuff
25:34
Speaker 14: from your home, breaking.
25:36
Speaker 6: In your cars.
25:38
Speaker 14: It perpetuates all the crime basically other than the regular
25:43
Speaker 14: crime that you have on an every daya basis, it
25:46
Speaker 14: all leads back to drugs, and that's just my opinion.
25:49
Speaker 14: If we could be harsher and do something to kind
25:56
Speaker 14: of help or prevent the rug abuse in the addiction
26:01
Speaker 14: here in Kanall County, I think it'd be great and
26:04
Speaker 14: that would probably lead to less crime.
26:07
Speaker 2: Talk to Delbert Rouse the Third again, who is the
26:10
Speaker 2: new magistrate here in Kanah County. But Dave Island Show
26:12
Speaker 2: and five at Live brought to you in part by
26:13
Speaker 2: Morgan and Morgan, America's largest injury law firm. If you're injured,
26:17
Speaker 2: visit for the People dot Com you Delbert Rouse the Third.
26:20
Speaker 2: That means there were two before you. Yes sir, Yes sir,
26:24
Speaker 2: that's your comfort. We'll talk about your family.
26:26
Speaker 14: My parents weren't original, now. My my mother and father
26:30
Speaker 14: were hard working middle class people. My father was a
26:35
Speaker 14: civil servant. He started out at Charleson Police Department and
26:40
Speaker 14: then went to the Charleston Fire Department and that's where
26:43
Speaker 14: he retired from. My mother was a hard working, god
26:49
Speaker 14: fearing lady and who made sure when I was young,
26:52
Speaker 14: I was in church every Sunday, whether.
26:54
Speaker 2: I wanted, not in front of a magic and not
26:56
Speaker 2: in front of a magistrate.
26:57
Speaker 6: Yes, sir, and so.
27:02
Speaker 14: She worked for the state and later went to work
27:05
Speaker 14: at the Prosecutor's office, and uh, she really loved politics
27:11
Speaker 14: and that was that was her big thing. And I
27:16
Speaker 14: think they they brought me up to where I respected people.
27:25
Speaker 14: And I was always taught it doesn't matter who you
27:28
Speaker 14: are and who you encounter in life, you treat everybody
27:31
Speaker 14: the same. And uh, you would treat people the way
27:35
Speaker 14: that you would want to be treated. So no matter
27:39
Speaker 14: you know, dealing with uh, yeah, you just yeah, all
27:46
Speaker 14: walks of life, everyone deserves fair shake and to be
27:50
Speaker 14: treated the same.
27:51
Speaker 2: Now you're heading out of here, going right down the
27:53
Speaker 2: street to because you're already at work, right.
27:55
Speaker 6: I'm already at work.
27:56
Speaker 14: I've spent the yes, sir, I've spent the last two
27:58
Speaker 14: days at the Supreme Court doing some training and uh
28:03
Speaker 14: I'll be receiving further training later on, but uh I'll
28:07
Speaker 14: be uh I'll be jumping right in on the bench today.
28:09
Speaker 2: All right. So we wish you the best to like, Oh,
28:11
Speaker 2: thank you, congratulations in a position. Okay, you mentioned your family.
28:14
Speaker 2: Is there anybody I always like to give people an opportunity.
28:17
Speaker 2: We only got about, you know, a minute or so,
28:19
Speaker 2: but is there anybody that you want to thank? Oh,
28:22
Speaker 2: but in your family or anything with that.
28:25
Speaker 6: Well, my wife and some closer veterans.
28:28
Speaker 2: You better start.
28:28
Speaker 6: I better think my wife. Yeah I was.
28:31
Speaker 2: I was throwing it out there. Okay, I'm trying to
28:33
Speaker 2: help you, brother.
28:33
Speaker 6: I know, and you do well. Yeah, I do want
28:36
Speaker 6: to thank my wife.

Speaker 2: Restaurant Week coming up, the final week of the month
31:50
Speaker 2: in Charleston, starts at twenty six. Here to talk about
31:52
Speaker 2: a dicats of gold of a buzz foods How you
31:55
Speaker 2: doing good? After Good Morning? I forget what shieft them
31:57
Speaker 2: on Good Morning, Sarah, Welcome to the show.
31:58
Speaker 3: Hey you, good morning, Dave. Great to be here.
32:00
Speaker 2: Give us the history of Restaurant Week in Charleston.
32:03
Speaker 3: Sure, we've been organizing this annual event for thirteen years.
32:06
Speaker 3: We did skip a year during COVID, so this is
32:08
Speaker 3: our twelfth event. But it started in twenty fourteen and
32:12
Speaker 3: it has just grown year after year. Amazingly, people still
32:16
Speaker 3: tell me that they're not aware of what the event is,
32:19
Speaker 3: and that just reminds me like, we've still got our
32:21
Speaker 3: promotional work to do. We need to reach every possible audience.
32:24
Speaker 3: But this has turned into not just an annual important
32:30
Speaker 3: economic event for locally owned restaurants, but an economic engine
32:35
Speaker 3: in downtown Charleston. And so we put a little bit
32:37
Speaker 3: of organizational effort behind it, my company and my colleagues,
32:42
Speaker 3: but it's the participating restaurants to do all the work.
32:45
Speaker 3: They write creative menus, they bring their best foot forward
32:49
Speaker 3: with their service staff, and they make a great experience
32:51
Speaker 3: for what is hopefully a lot of both loyal familiar
32:55
Speaker 3: patrons but also new first time visitors. During this annual tradition.
33:00
Speaker 2: Came out of the water crisis.
33:02
Speaker 3: The first event happened almost immediately after Charleston water crisis.
33:06
Speaker 2: Because we talked about COVID, you know, being devastating for
33:09
Speaker 2: the restaurant industry, but the water crisis going back all
33:12
Speaker 2: those years ago, didn't do the restaurant industry in Charleston
33:14
Speaker 2: any favors.
33:15
Speaker 3: Well, in some ways, it was just as bad they were.
33:18
Speaker 3: Every restaurant was ordered closed by the Health Department and
33:21
Speaker 3: through no fault of their own. And so we had
33:24
Speaker 3: been planning the event before that catastrophe happened, and it
33:28
Speaker 3: just the timing worked out just right so that the
33:31
Speaker 3: silver lining was people were ready, We had permission from
33:34
Speaker 3: the Health Department to reopen. People had a little bit
33:37
Speaker 3: of cavi and fever, cabin fever after a few weeks
33:39
Speaker 3: of being stuck at home, and people knew that the
33:43
Speaker 3: hospitality industry needed some love and support, and so man,
33:46
Speaker 3: they came out to support this event. The first time
33:48
Speaker 3: that we did it, we didn't know what was going
33:49
Speaker 3: to happen. It was a smashing success.
33:51
Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm and I'll give props to my guy. He's
33:54
Speaker 2: frequent guests on the program, Stephen Keith, the food ga,
33:56
Speaker 2: the rights to column in the Gazette Mail. He's got
33:59
Speaker 2: everything that today and I mean ten ten Hidelphia Black Sheep,
34:03
Speaker 2: Burritos and Bruce Bourbon Street Bistro, Bricks and Barrels, the
34:07
Speaker 2: Bucket at Eagle View, that's a new one. Of course,
34:09
Speaker 2: they've been, you know, down the road to all Ways
34:11
Speaker 2: and they're they're up there now, Phaseos, Fairbank, the Fort
34:16
Speaker 2: Bar and grill Kell's Tavern, Keida Modern Japanese, the Otto Tree,
34:23
Speaker 2: Cafe and cater and Coyer Diner, Pies and Pintes, Paulley's
34:26
Speaker 2: so Host. I mean, there's just so many that are
34:28
Speaker 2: listed here. I won't go over all of them, but
34:30
Speaker 2: I mean, that's that's pretty that's pretty much every I
34:33
Speaker 2: almost say every restaurant, but that's a that's a great
34:35
Speaker 2: percentage of restaurants in Charleston, and even on the outskirts
34:38
Speaker 2: a little bit.
34:38
Speaker 3: Twenty one participating restaurants this year, that's uh. And growing
34:42
Speaker 3: the number of participating venues is important because we allow
34:46
Speaker 3: the restaurants to pick a price point that works for
34:49
Speaker 3: their menu and their operation and their clientele. And that
34:52
Speaker 3: also broadens the event to allow more diners to participate, right,
34:56
Speaker 3: I mean, there was a time where it was really
34:58
Speaker 3: focused on fine dining restaurants on and we've expanded in
35:02
Speaker 3: a way that allows a more casual, family friendly venue
35:05
Speaker 3: like the Bucket or like Pies and Pints to appropriately participate.
35:10
Speaker 3: And it just it just gives more people a chance
35:13
Speaker 3: to join the fun and have a great meal. And
35:15
Speaker 3: you know, it's it's been good for the promotion overall.
35:18
Speaker 2: And I like how it's kind of gone in that
35:20
Speaker 2: direction again. We're talking digg. It's gold of buzzfoods about
35:23
Speaker 2: restaurant Week because and that's one of the things I love,
35:26
Speaker 2: and Steve and I are really great friends. One of
35:28
Speaker 2: the things that I that I like about him and
35:30
Speaker 2: his writing is everything doesn't have to be a white
35:32
Speaker 2: tablecloth dinner to be good. Good food can be found
35:37
Speaker 2: with a little grease involved as well.
35:38
Speaker 3: Oh, I absolutely agree. I mean, I you know, fine
35:42
Speaker 3: dining has its time and its place. You're celebrating a
35:44
Speaker 3: special occasion, or you have a you know, a friend
35:46
Speaker 3: or a client that you need to impress, but most
35:49
Speaker 3: of us eat like real people. We go to Yeah,
35:51
Speaker 3: I mean, there's needs to be a TV on somewhere,
35:53
Speaker 3: and there needs to be a friendly casual server that
35:56
Speaker 3: you can connect with. And we've got a little bit
35:59
Speaker 3: of all of that in this year's list of participating restaurants,
36:03
Speaker 3: and I think that's what's going to satisfy people more
36:06
Speaker 3: than anything. It's a lot of great choices.
36:07
Speaker 2: And what do the restaurants get out of this. I mean,
36:09
Speaker 2: obviously they get a lot of the publicity and everything,
36:11
Speaker 2: but what have you heard from the restaurant tours in
36:13
Speaker 2: the past that they really love about this.
36:16
Speaker 3: This might sound hard to believe, but we've had participating
36:18
Speaker 3: restaurants tell us it is their single biggest week of
36:22
Speaker 3: the year outside of Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, or maybe
36:26
Speaker 3: the week before Christmas. Is it's that impactful for these restaurants.
36:30
Speaker 3: And just to remind you, the reason that we do
36:32
Speaker 3: this during the last week of January is because that
36:35
Speaker 3: was a notoriously slow time of year in the restaurant business.
36:39
Speaker 3: Right there's a lot of good reasons that in the
36:41
Speaker 3: month of January, people don't dine out. They're sometimes bad weather,
36:45
Speaker 3: they're keeping a New Year's resolution, they're paying off credit
36:49
Speaker 3: card bills from December. It just makes a perfect storm
36:52
Speaker 3: of bad conditions for the restaurant industry. And so we
36:55
Speaker 3: started to organize this promotion and it would always be
36:59
Speaker 3: the last week of January specifically for that reason. Let's
37:02
Speaker 3: find a let's find an excuse to promote and celebrate
37:06
Speaker 3: locally owned restaurants at a time when they need us
37:08
Speaker 3: more than ever. And the response has been that it's
37:12
Speaker 3: a hugely impactful week for these restaurants. They really I mean,
37:16
Speaker 3: there's restaurants on this list that will sell every seat
37:19
Speaker 3: they have for every seating, every night of the week,
37:22
Speaker 3: and that just doesn't happen in Charleston.
37:24
Speaker 2: Yeah, I've got a co worker out there that we
37:26
Speaker 2: She and I were talking for the show started today
37:29
Speaker 2: and she actually had her planner out there and was
37:31
Speaker 2: writing and you know what she's going to do for
37:33
Speaker 2: it because she can't hit them all right, I mean,
37:35
Speaker 2: so you got to you got to pick and choose why.
37:36
Speaker 2: It's like, you know, Dickinson, I am continually amazed at
37:40
Speaker 2: the restaurant scene here in Charleston. I mean there's always
37:43
Speaker 2: been great places to eat, you know. I get that
37:45
Speaker 2: over over, you know, over the years, but over the
37:47
Speaker 2: last couple of years, I mean, it's been taken to
37:50
Speaker 2: a whole other level than Charleston. And having a James
37:53
Speaker 2: Beard Award winner doesn't doesn't hurt. But Cheff Paul would
37:57
Speaker 2: be the first person to tell you, look, he you know,
37:59
Speaker 2: he I'd had something to do with it, but so
38:01
Speaker 2: did a lot of other people as well. It's become
38:03
Speaker 2: Charleston has become a true food destination for literally this
38:07
Speaker 2: part of the country.
38:08
Speaker 3: I absolutely agree. We're really blessed to have some talented
38:12
Speaker 3: folks in Charleston, and Paul is I think the undisputed
38:15
Speaker 3: leader of this effort. He deserves all the kudos that
38:18
Speaker 3: he's received. But Paul's also really a generous spirit, and
38:22
Speaker 3: he you know, he encourages other restaurants and he offers
38:26
Speaker 3: help where he can. And there's plenty of people that
38:28
Speaker 3: have worked with Paul in one venue or another and
38:30
Speaker 3: now they're leading a kitchen for a different restaurant or
38:34
Speaker 3: a different operator and anyway that yeah, that Paul's famous
38:37
Speaker 3: for these always saying, you know, rising tide lifts all boats.
38:40
Speaker 3: And the attention that Paul has gotten at ten ten
38:43
Speaker 3: is only to the benefit of everybody else in this
38:45
Speaker 3: town who's trying to put out a great meal and
38:47
Speaker 3: offer great service. And I think we're getting better every day.
38:50
Speaker 2: Oh yeah, absolutely, one hundred percent. And I think it's
38:54
Speaker 2: something that Charleston can really when you talk about the
38:56
Speaker 2: things that you used to market Charleston, you could talk
38:59
Speaker 2: to mayor a good one or two Brady or any
39:00
Speaker 2: of those folks and they'll tell you, yeah, we talk
39:02
Speaker 2: about regatta. Yeah, we talk about you know, the things
39:04
Speaker 2: we do during Christmas and the basketball tournaments and all
39:07
Speaker 2: the great things Charleston does, but the restaurant scene is
39:11
Speaker 2: becoming part of it as well.
39:12
Speaker 3: It deserves to be part of that discussion. Yeah, we
39:15
Speaker 3: we have a lot to celebrate, and this is a
39:17
Speaker 3: week where again we try and shine a light on
39:20
Speaker 3: the places that are truly locally owned and operated, the unique,
39:24
Speaker 3: high character venues that we have around this town. And
39:27
Speaker 3: I'm just glad that the city supports this effort and
39:31
Speaker 3: uses it as a chance to get out and try
39:33
Speaker 3: something new and you know, repay the hospitality industry for
39:37
Speaker 3: their hard.
39:37
Speaker 2: Work and support local I mean, I just mentioned a few.
39:41
Speaker 2: You had twenty one restaurants who are taking part in this.
39:43
Speaker 2: I just mentioned a few of them. Each and every
39:45
Speaker 2: one of those are folks that give back to the
39:48
Speaker 2: community very much. These are the ones that do that.
39:51
Speaker 2: And look, I've said before, I don't hate on the chains.
39:55
Speaker 2: We all go to them from time to time, but
39:58
Speaker 2: they're a lot less likely. I'm not saying that they don't,
40:01
Speaker 2: because many of them do, but they're a lot less
40:03
Speaker 2: likely to support things in the community like these restaurants do.
40:08
Speaker 2: These are locally owned and operated places. These are people
40:11
Speaker 2: from here in Charleston and the surrounding areas that give
40:14
Speaker 2: back to the community, and that's why it's important, in
40:16
Speaker 2: my opinion that we support them.
40:18
Speaker 3: Yeah, I couldn't agree more Dave and I. I don't
40:21
Speaker 3: want to pick on chain restaurants. They serve a purpose,
40:24
Speaker 3: I guess I would say, But no people, No one
40:26
Speaker 3: visits the city of Charleston for the first time and
40:29
Speaker 3: then goes back to their community and says, oh, I
40:31
Speaker 3: had the most incredible meal at Olive Guard and I
40:33
Speaker 3: want to tell you about it. No one snapping pictures
40:35
Speaker 3: of the meals that they had at Red Lobster or whatever.
40:37
Speaker 3: The chain of the day is like, we have some
40:40
Speaker 3: outstanding places, like you know, and it's it's about the food,
40:44
Speaker 3: and it's about the service, but it's about the environment,
40:46
Speaker 3: right experience, the thoughtful experience, and the ambiance that's created
40:50
Speaker 3: in these locally owned restaurants. Just there's no replacement for it.
40:53
Speaker 3: It's what defines, you know, our culture and our community.
40:57
Speaker 3: And you know, this is just a week where we
40:59
Speaker 3: take notice.
41:00
Speaker 6: All right.
41:01
Speaker 2: It starts January the twenty six.
41:03
Speaker 3: Monday the twenty sixth through Saturday thirty Feve.
41:06
Speaker 2: And I read some of the restaurants, but where can
41:08
Speaker 2: people go online to get a complete list? I mean
41:10
Speaker 2: is what's the best place to go?
41:11
Speaker 3: The best option is the Charleston, West Virginia Restaurant Week
41:15
Speaker 3: Facebook page. You'll get a steady stream of information there.
41:19
Speaker 3: But you know you mentioned Stephen Keith already. He's been
41:21
Speaker 3: such a supporter of the Gazette. There's a lot of
41:23
Speaker 3: I think most local news outlets will have a full
41:25
Speaker 3: list of restaurants and maybe even the fullest of menus available,
41:28
Speaker 3: so it shouldn't be hard to find. But the number
41:30
Speaker 3: one piece of advice I have to say is, anyone
41:33
Speaker 3: who's excited about this, you should call and make a reservation.
41:36
Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's yes.
41:38
Speaker 3: You don't need a ticket to participate. You don't need
41:40
Speaker 3: to pay for anything in advance. All you need to
41:42
Speaker 3: do is let the restaurant know, please, so that you
41:45
Speaker 3: want to be there, and that allows them to plan
41:47
Speaker 3: for appropriate staffing and have the right amount of materials
41:51
Speaker 3: on hand, and it prevents you from having a two
41:53
Speaker 3: hour wait when you you know you want to have
41:56
Speaker 3: dinner at an.
41:56
Speaker 2: Appropriate and many of the restaurants we mentioned traditionally aren't
41:59
Speaker 2: open on Monday, but they are going to open this time.
42:02
Speaker 2: I know I heard, and I say that because I
42:03
Speaker 2: was listening to Chef Paul on hotline the other day
42:06
Speaker 2: with The Weekly and Coop, and he talked about his
42:08
Speaker 2: places being open on Mondays because many of them may
42:11
Speaker 2: not be, but they are going to be for restaurant.
42:13
Speaker 3: I'm glad you said that. Quite a few restaurants that
42:15
Speaker 3: are not traditionally open on Monday do open on Monday
42:18
Speaker 3: for restaurant weeks. So it's just worth picking up the
42:21
Speaker 3: phone and making, you know, calling the reservation line anyway.
42:23
Speaker 3: But it's just another indication of the demand that this
42:27
Speaker 3: event creates.
42:28
Speaker 2: No, I am Dickinson Gould of Buzz Foods. Appreciate you
42:31
Speaker 2: being here man, Thanks a lot, Thanks so much, and

Speaker 19: talking about the traditions that they've made. It's so awesome.
45:57
Speaker 19: So many more people propose for marriage at light the night?
46:02
Speaker 19: So many more people did you have this year that did?
46:05
Speaker 2: Honestly?
46:06
Speaker 19: I mean, because like they don't necessarily tell us, we
46:07
Speaker 19: just kind of see it on social media or something,
46:10
Speaker 19: so I mean, you know, like I guess we'll never
46:12
Speaker 19: technically know because you know, so much of it is
46:15
Speaker 19: not really planned with us at least, But it's just
46:18
Speaker 19: so cool seeing these seeing certain things pop up on
46:21
Speaker 19: whether it's on social media, whether it's pictures or videos
46:25
Speaker 19: that are sent to us directly. I mean, it's just
46:28
Speaker 19: so awesome seeing so many companies and groups and families
46:30
Speaker 19: coming out to have a celebration.
46:33
Speaker 2: It was just, you know, it was some extreme weather
46:36
Speaker 2: out there.
46:37
Speaker 19: Yeah, but I mean, all in all, another growth year
46:40
Speaker 19: and just absolutely awesome, and you end up had having
46:42
Speaker 19: to cancel a lot a couple of times, two or
46:44
Speaker 19: three something like that.
46:44
Speaker 2: I don't want to talk about.
46:46
Speaker 1: Just joking now.
46:46
Speaker 19: I'm just joking three, which is nuts because the first
46:49
Speaker 19: two years combined we had one and then we had
46:51
Speaker 19: three this year, so it was it was nuts. It's winter,
46:53
Speaker 19: so we're expecting we want cold, right, It's cool, it's fun,
46:56
Speaker 19: it's part of a winter event with you know, Santa
47:00
Speaker 19: and everything out there, but this year was kind of
47:03
Speaker 19: nuts with how extreme a couple of those were.
47:05
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, and I mean, like you said, little snow,
47:07
Speaker 2: you know, on the ground or on the field is good.
47:09
Speaker 2: But what we had in December, you know, we don't
47:12
Speaker 2: want to have, especially if you have to end up
47:13
Speaker 2: closing up. So do we have any any numbers that
47:16
Speaker 2: you can give us about people through the gates or
47:17
Speaker 2: anything like that, Jill.
47:18
Speaker 8: Yeah, it was over one hundred thousand people came through
47:21
Speaker 8: the gates. And remember we it was a six week
47:24
Speaker 8: event this time last year. We went a year earlier.
47:27
Speaker 8: So over one hundred thousand people came through the gates.
47:30
Speaker 8: Over ten thousand tickets were donated to nonprofits too. So
47:33
Speaker 8: it was a really good event in general as a
47:36
Speaker 8: business but also in giving back to the community. And
47:38
Speaker 8: it was a really great way to kind of end
47:40
Speaker 8: twenty twenty five for us.
47:41
Speaker 2: And when we had the football championships, I mean, we
47:45
Speaker 2: talked about that because Christmas, Charleston's kind of becoming like
47:47
Speaker 2: the Christmas City. And when we had the four state
47:50
Speaker 2: champions crowned, we anticipated and I don't know whether they
47:55
Speaker 2: had their so had their jerseys on when they came
47:56
Speaker 2: over there. I don't know whether you saw that or not,
47:58
Speaker 2: but we anticipated that you guys would have a lot
48:00
Speaker 2: of folks, a lot of the fans in their team
48:02
Speaker 2: colors that would come over to Light the Night. Was
48:04
Speaker 2: that the case.
48:05
Speaker 8: Definitely, I didn't see anyone actually in their jerseys, but
48:07
Speaker 8: we definitely had an uptick that weekend. Oh yeah, definitely
48:11
Speaker 8: there was an uptick that weekend in attendance.
48:13
Speaker 2: Yeah. And so when you talk about that many people
48:16
Speaker 2: coming into Charleston, obviously a lot of folks from the
48:18
Speaker 2: Metro Valley area came, but that's not all Charleston, Puttnam
48:23
Speaker 2: surrounding areas. That's a lot of folks that came in
48:26
Speaker 2: from out of town and out of state even Definitely,
48:28
Speaker 2: Oh that's absolutely true.
48:29
Speaker 19: I mean, like both anecdotally as well as what our
48:32
Speaker 19: you know, our ticket system and all that stuff says.
48:34
Speaker 19: And it was ridiculously cool talking to people who drove
48:37
Speaker 19: two and a half hours to come to Light to Night,
48:40
Speaker 19: and I mean they were just so pumped. You could
48:42
Speaker 19: see that, you know, you could like literally see them
48:45
Speaker 19: taking it all in and just this is awesome. And
48:48
Speaker 19: you know, I can't see this. I don't have anything
48:50
Speaker 19: like this close to me. So hearing about that talking
48:53
Speaker 19: to some of the hotels that you know that they
48:56
Speaker 19: just had a lot of people saying we're here for
48:58
Speaker 19: light to night, so we're in all of that, and
49:00
Speaker 19: from the economic impact and everything is pretty special as well.
49:03
Speaker 2: Yeah, and when those people come from out of town
49:06
Speaker 2: or out of state, chances are they're not just going
49:09
Speaker 2: to come look at the lights and go home. You know,
49:11
Speaker 2: They're going to They're going to go downtown, They're going
49:13
Speaker 2: to go to Slack Plaza, They're going to go grab
49:16
Speaker 2: a bite to eat at one of those many many
49:17
Speaker 2: places that we mentioned there.
49:19
Speaker 19: Oh yeah, absolutely, no, absolutely that, you know, I mean,
49:21
Speaker 19: we that's something that we clear as day heard from
49:24
Speaker 19: whether it was our downstairs neighbor of Bruises or people
49:27
Speaker 19: downtown or around town let alone. Definitely, Again, the hotel industry,
49:32
Speaker 19: you know, is really neat hearing kind of the stories,
49:36
Speaker 19: the impact, and again hearing kind of where people come from.
49:40
Speaker 2: But then what they do when they're in Charleston.
49:42
Speaker 19: All right, So we're back next year, rank Oh yeah, absolutely,
49:46
Speaker 19: you know, and and then the goal is is that
49:47
Speaker 19: what can we do more?
49:48
Speaker 2: What can we keep adding?
49:49
Speaker 19: You know, this year we had a bigger ice rink,
49:51
Speaker 19: we had more lights, we had significantly more rides and activities.
49:55
Speaker 19: So you know, the goal for sure is how do
49:59
Speaker 19: we keep max the space, you know, whether that's growing
50:03
Speaker 19: up or keep utilizing certain parts of the field. You know,
50:08
Speaker 19: how can we maximize the bumper cars, for instance. I
50:11
Speaker 19: mean that's a that's a major priority for me because
50:14
Speaker 19: every time that we had them out on the ice,
50:18
Speaker 19: people had at the time of their lives, they had
50:20
Speaker 19: a blast. I mean, people were really traveling far to
50:22
Speaker 19: be able to use those guys. But it's not too
50:25
Speaker 19: practical to have them on the ice when you've got
50:27
Speaker 19: ice skaters as well.
50:28
Speaker 2: All right, Well, so what seemed to be the biggest thing?
50:31
Speaker 2: Was it the was it what you mentioned, they're the
50:33
Speaker 2: bumper cars and stuff? What that seemed to be the
50:34
Speaker 2: highlight of the one or two big Oh, it was
50:35
Speaker 2: certainly part of it.
50:36
Speaker 19: I mean, we definitely had more ice skaters than we
50:38
Speaker 19: had had, you know, especially per event, than you know,
50:40
Speaker 19: the entire year. So that continues to be incredibly popular.
50:45
Speaker 19: I think when you look at the fact that we
50:47
Speaker 19: grew about fifty percent extra in terms of rides, activities, games,
50:51
Speaker 19: carnival games that were there, the utilization certainly went up.
50:55
Speaker 19: So you know, all of the kind of things that
50:58
Speaker 19: we do. We've had many golf at the baseball game
51:00
Speaker 19: games the last two years. This was the first time
51:01
Speaker 19: we had it late to night, and you could tell
51:03
Speaker 19: it was really fun seeing people utilize it.
51:06
Speaker 2: All right, all right, before you know it, we're gonna
51:09
Speaker 2: be talking baseball over at Go Martin Ballpark. We excited you.
51:11
Speaker 2: Oh yeah, great time to go over to Dirty birds
51:13

51:15

51:17
Speaker 2: look forward to that. What's opening Day? It's coming up.
51:20
Speaker 19: It's coming up April April Day, yesday after my brother's birthday.
51:26
Speaker 2: So it's easy for strew that at you. I apologize
51:29
Speaker 2: for that.
51:29
Speaker 8: No, that's my fault. I was looking at when we
51:31
Speaker 8: have a Grand Slam school day before opening day, and
51:33
Speaker 8: I knew that that date was on my mind, and
51:35
Speaker 8: I didn't have April Day locked in my head yet.
51:38
Speaker 8: Got you stumped me.
51:39
Speaker 4: I don't think you stumped me in two years.
51:41
Speaker 6: All right?
51:41
Speaker 2: All right, well you stumped me enough, so so we're good.
51:43
