- 0:49SPEAKER_02: And Krimbus.
- 0:53SPEAKER_03: Very close to Christmas anyway.
- 0:55SPEAKER_02: Mary Chrysler.
- 0:56SPEAKER_02: So um when we were sitting down to figure out what our intro is gonna be, we realized that, oh hey, this is the episode that comes out right before Christmas.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: Also, we forgot all of the other mu uh holidays in December, so our bad.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: Very late.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: I hope you had a good Hanukkah.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: If you celebrate Hanukkah.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: Uh Merry Christmas.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: Yule was yesterday.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: Well, at the time of posting this.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: Um Saturnalia.
- 1:27SPEAKER_02: Um of the other ones.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: Listen, this has been a weird year.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: We're not totally sure what day of the week it is most of the time.
- 1:35SPEAKER_03: At this point, no.
- 1:36SPEAKER_02: Or day of the year.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: But it's almost over.
- 1:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:40SPEAKER_03: It is almost over.
- 1:42SPEAKER_03: Whether this is a good thing or not, we're still unsure.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, this is not quite our 2020 Reflections episode yet.
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: That's probably next week, but well, let's just focus on the Dungeons and Dragons because I don't want to really fucking fair.
- 1:57SPEAKER_03: Reflecting is just bad.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: So reflecting on Okay.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: Well, I reflecting on Chris Christmas last year.
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: Um I've told I told this this story, I think, in the Albear episode, about how last year my mom got me that little collection of like different types of notebooks that had iconic DD monsters on it.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: And I said I was doing Albears because that was one of the only topics we had actually not yet covered.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: That was on that.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: That was on that.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: One of them was a red dragon, which I mean like basic.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: We like well, and we've talked we've talked about a lot of dragons.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: So I feel like it counts.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: But we I mean we haven't really talked about red dragons, have we?
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: We've we've talked about a dragon that is red.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: So I'll take it.
- 2:42SPEAKER_03: We have talked about a lot of dragons.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: So I feel like they're the dungeons and dragons.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: They're 50% of what we have going on.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: So true.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: So seeing as I did one of the last entries on that, you know, yeah.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: That series of nice notebooks, which I will actually post pictures of on our Twitter now that I've done them all.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: Um, I only had one left left, one iconic D monster left, and that is the knoll.
- 3:13SPEAKER_03: The knoll.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: The ghost people.
- 3:19SPEAKER_03: Humanoid hyena.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: The humanoid hyenas, much like one of my personas.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: So Well then.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: You're laughing, but I'm dead serious.
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: No, I know, I know.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: Taylor, you know.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: I I do know.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: Lewin has multiple personas because she can't decide.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: I I'm flaky.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: So we're going to briefly talk about the real life uh origins and potential inspiration for Knowles.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: So, according to the book, a brief history of Knowles, Anthropophagy, and Emeralds from Wales to Wisconsin and beyond.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: That's the mouth that's a mouthful.
- 3:59SPEAKER_03: That is such a long title for a brief history of brief.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: The book is like 36 pages long.
- 4:07SPEAKER_03: So the title is like longer than the book.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: Um, and that was written by Paul Haney and was released in 2015.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: Um, according to that book, Knowles first appeared in the 1912 short story, How Nuth Would Have Practiced His Art Upon the Knolls, which is written by Lord Dunsy.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: And that was part of a it was basically like a compilation of short stories, because this is like a page-long story.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: Um, so in this story, the titular Nuth is a thief and he plans a heist to raid the house of the Knolls, which in this story was spelled G-N-O-L-E-S.
- 4:46SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: Very uh slightly like differently than D D Knolls.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: Um, alongside a young man who was dragged to Noth for an apprenticeship by his mother.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: So this poor, hapless kid that tags along with him.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 4:59SPEAKER_03: Um An apprenticeship in being a thief?
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: I I don't think she realized what his occupation actually was.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: Because the the whole thievery thing, I think, was new to him.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: It was something he was trying out.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: Okay, okay.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: Um, because all these stories revolve around this Nuth guy.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: Um, so the gnolls in the story are not really described, but I selected a quote to best convey, I think, the vibe.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: Quote.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: But the gnolls had watched him through knavish holes that they bore in trunks of the trees, and the unearthly silence gave way, as if it were with a grace, to the rapid screams of Tonker as they picked him up from behind.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: Screams that came faster and faster until they were incoherent.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: And where they took him, it is not good to ask.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: And what they did with him, I shall not say.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: God damn.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they probably ate him.
- 5:52SPEAKER_02: Probably, yeah.
- 5:53SPEAKER_02: Don't like to think about that much.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it is not good to ask.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: So that's kind of the the they weren't described like physically, right?
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: But you know.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: So, um, also, quick aside, this is not strictly related, but I had to talk about it, you'll see why.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: Um, I could not find much in the way of real-world mythology to point to a possible influence for either Lord Duncany's work or DD in general for gnolls.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: But like I had to share this.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: So there are a lot of myths across the African continent about where hyenas, which, spoiler alert if you don't know much about gnolls, is very different to a knoll.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: Because a knoll is just a humanoid hyena person.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: It's not a person who turns into a hyena.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 6:36SPEAKER_03: They're they're not shapeshifters.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: No.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: But a very interesting myth about uh were hyenas I found was from Ethiopia.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: And that is the notion that every blacksmith whose trade is hereditary is actually secretly a witch or a wizard who can turn into high a hyena and does so to go grave ropping at night.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: Hey, hey, hey, hey, babe.
- 7:02SPEAKER_03: I mean, mine isn't hereditary because I have absolutely zero blacksmiths in my family history.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: I'm so Travis is not a wear hyena.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: Don't worry, I am not aware hyena.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: So these were these blacksmith wear hyenas, which is the coolest thing I've ever said, are referred to Yeah, it's actually probably the coolest thing that was ever created.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: Like that's just like, hi, I'm a blacksmith wear hyena.
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: Fuck.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: Nice to fucking meet you.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: Um, but these blacksmith wear hyenas are referred to as Buddha, and the suspicious notion seems to have originated from the tension between the Christian and Jewish populations of Ethiopia.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: A lot of the the sources I'm seeing for like documentations of this this phenomenon are from like the early 1900s.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: So, again, gnolls are not wear creatures, but like, come on, blacksmith wear hyenas.
- 7:55SPEAKER_03: No, that is pretty cool.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: Blacksmith wear cry wear hyenas.
- 7:58SPEAKER_03: I'm going to guess that this Buddha is not in any way related to the Buddha.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: No, no, no, no.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: It's it's spelled differently.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: It's spelled B-O-U-D-A.
- 8:09SPEAKER_03: Just figured I would double check.
- 8:10SPEAKER_03: If they were one and the same, I was gonna like probably flip out just a little bit.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, and the and the Buddha did a little stint in Ethiopia, grave robbing, you know.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: Just grave robbing as a hyper.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: As you do, you know.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: Because why not?
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: Why not?
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: So, uh for after that brief aside, we're now going to finally venture into DD.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: Oh, wow, finally, and our DD podcast.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: Finally.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: It took us like however long.
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: So Knolls first appear in DD in the white box set, which was published in 1974, and were described as the cross between no gnomes and trolls.
- 8:47SPEAKER_05: Hmm.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: Uh guess why they gave it a name.
- 8:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: That yeah, which I mean to be fair, we don't know why Lord Dunsany gave them the name Knoll either, but I uh I guess maybe maybe Gary Gygax saw that the word Knoll and thought it was like into decided to inter Well, decided to interpret it as like a portmanteau of those words, but so of the lack of description in Lord Dunsy's work, Gygax said, quote, parentheses, perhaps Lord Sunsini, I guess I did not really make it all that clear.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: End quote.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: So he like calls this guy out for not giving them any description in his in his work and decided, fuck it, they're gnome trolls.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: They're gnome trolls.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: Interesting.
- 9:34SPEAKER_03: So Gygax was actually aware of Lord Dunsini's work.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: Yes, or Lord Sunsini, as it were.
- 9:41SPEAKER_03: Lord Sunsy, I guess.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: As it were.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: Um, so they were chaotic creatures that were generally described as being like an average hobgoblin, but with the exception of the gnoll king and his bodyguard who fought with the strength of trolls, sans regenerative power.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: Uh all gnolls received a base plus two to morale.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: That's that's it?
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: That's that's it.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: So this description of gnolls did not last long.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: Um with the ADD monster manual, which was published in 1977, their description was changed to that of hyena men who lived in loosely organized bands with a penchant for raiding and violence.
- 10:19SPEAKER_03: So that's more akin to fiction.
- 10:25SPEAKER_03: Modern knolls.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: Yes, modern gnolls.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: Not like your grandfather's gnolls.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: The same grandfather's gnolls.
- 10:32SPEAKER_03: Gnome troll.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: So they were described physically as being over seven feet tall and resembling greenish grey-colored hyenas with dull red or yellow manes.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: Okay, yeah.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: They had black eyes and wore armor fashioned of shabby leather, animal pelts, metal plates, and horns.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: They had short lifespans for humanoids, living to only about 35 and were chaotic evil.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: Spoiler alert, that doesn't change.
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: They're always just chaotic evil.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: They're always chaotic evil, and they always, in in iterations where their lifespans are mentioned, live to be about 35, and that's natural death.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: That's not, you know, dying in combat as is more likely for them.
- 11:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they are a pretty chaotic folk, as I recall.
- 11:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:14SPEAKER_03: And I love that.
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, that was the point.
- 11:17SPEAKER_02: It was the joke.
- 11:18SPEAKER_02: Okay, gotcha.
- 11:18SPEAKER_03: I love the fact that their armor is just fashioned of pretty much whatever they're doing.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: I know, it's kind of cobbled together.
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: So their society was very loosely organized.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: Uh, they often squabbled with each other, but would also often join forces with another knoll band to take out a common enemy or increase the chance of success in a raid.
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: They love raiding.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: Who doesn't?
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: Fair enough.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: Various increasing sizes of knoll gatherings brings the presence of leader or chieftain type gnolls that have higher hit dice.
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: So basically just like other knolls except better.
- 11:50SPEAKER_03: They're just stronger.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: Better, better, faster, stronger.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, more knoll.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: Ten times more knoll.
- 11:55SPEAKER_01: So the gnolls also had a king with a following two times the normal size, but other than that, and his you know, physical strength, higher hit dice, yada yada.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: Uh, he had about the same influence as any other strong knoll leader.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: So they had a king, but you know.
- 12:10SPEAKER_02: But like he didn't really do anything other than like exist.
- 12:13SPEAKER_02: And do knolls.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: Be more powerful.
- 12:15SPEAKER_02: Be a better knoll.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: He was better at knoll.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: He was better at gnolling, yes.
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: So 85% of knoll layers were subterranean.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: Knolls profess possess.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: Profess.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: They don't profess anything.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: They're not very smart.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: Knolls possess infra vision, so they can see in the dark.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: Uh the rest being of the that the 15% being settlements made in abandoned buildings or towns.
- 12:39SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: You know.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: Like maybe ones that they raided and killed everybody in town and then just kind of moved in.
- 12:44SPEAKER_03: And they're like, you know, this place actually looks pretty nice.
- 12:46SPEAKER_03: I think I'm uh I'm a I'm a chill here for a bit.
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: And then I'm gonna ruin it so it doesn't look nice anymore.
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: Hey, no, it looks nicer.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: Come on.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: Fair enough.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: For their sensibilities, probably.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: Um, so noseclid live in any type of environment besides arid or arctic.
- 13:01SPEAKER_01: So pretty much anything in kind of the temperate to tropical to kind of chilly, you know.
- 13:08SPEAKER_02: They they need a little bit of humidity and a little bit of heat.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: Partial sunlight, don't water it too much.
- 13:14SPEAKER_03: And no to extreme cold.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: Correct.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: So subterranean knolls often had trolls living with them and acting as guards, and knolls on the surface often had hyenas or hyenodons, which are apparently prehistoric carnivorous mammals.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: They had dinosaurs acting in a similar capacity as well as pets.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: They kind of considered hyenas and hyanodons to be their pets.
- 13:40SPEAKER_03: I mean, I I was aware that there are dinosaurs.
- 13:45SPEAKER_03: Dinosaurs and DDs.
- 13:46SPEAKER_03: Well, they're mammals, but you know.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: They're it's pre- I see the word preh-cause T-Rexes.
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: I see I see the word prehistoric, and it's it's a dinosaur.
- 13:54SPEAKER_03: It's a dinosaur, man.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: I just had to make a face at the accent that you just used.
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: Dinosaurs.
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: So uh they all they also kept captives for food or dentadone slave labor.
- 14:08SPEAKER_03: Shocker.
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: Woo! Woo! No slavery.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: So gnolls tended to be on good terms with a wide variety of goblinoid creatures so long as they were similarly matched in strength.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: And Knoll spoke the language of trolls, chaotic evil, because that was a thing.
- 14:24SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: Um, and they have a 60% chance of speaking either Orcish or Hobgoblin, as well as having their own Knoll language.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: Um, they were described as strong but disliking work, and specifically that they made poor miners.
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: I don't know why, in particular, they don't like mining.
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: But that that dislike of work is a is a pretty consistent factor, and kind of is part of the reason they like to keep slaves.
- 14:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: It's because they don't want to do the they don't want to do the labor.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: So they just they would rather just go and raid and enslave other people to do their work.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: Well, what do they even have them do?
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 15:03SPEAKER_03: Probably anything from I mean like stuff like that, mining or building to looking and maybe tending to other slaves so they don't die.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:14SPEAKER_03: Because I'm gonna assume that they're not very good at first aid.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: Probably not.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: So, Advanced Dungeons and Dragons also introduces the demon lord of Knolls, Yinogu.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: Yinogu.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: He was a powerful tauna reprince who appeared as a humanoid hyena with a giant figure, he's about twelve feet tall, dingy gray skin, and a sickly yellow mane, which was the only hair on his body.
- 15:38SPEAKER_03: Um That's strange.
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: He he was he and he he was kinda he is nasty.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: Nasty.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: He look he literally looked like a dead knoll, basically.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: Um he also always carried a seven foot long, three-balled damn it.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: I was gonna try.
- 15:58SPEAKER_03: Damn it.
- 15:59SPEAKER_03: Nope, there's no getting past that without laughing.
- 16:01SPEAKER_03: Fair enough.
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: You tried so hard.
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: He had he had three balls, adamantine flail.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: So it's got like little spike balls on it.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: Y'all know.
- 16:08SPEAKER_03: God damn.
- 16:09SPEAKER_03: It's a seven-foot-long flail.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:12SPEAKER_03: Jesus.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's a big boy, he's 12 feet tall.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: I mean, fair.
- 16:15SPEAKER_03: You're not wrong.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: He's a big boy.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: Um, he had a host of powers as a demon prince, including the ability to communicate telepathically.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: He also had access to a variety of magic, including but not limited to invisibility, fly, polymorph self, fear, teleport, telekinesis, transmute rock to mud, and mass charm.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: Because nothing's more charming than a gaunt, skeletal-looking, mangy hyena man.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: Yes, exactly.
- 16:41SPEAKER_03: I mean, don't forget, he has three-balled flail.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: He does.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: He does have he does have the balls.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: Uh boy.
- 16:47SPEAKER_02: There's a there's a kidna joke in there somewhere.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: So he he was said to typically have sixty-six of the most powerful gnolls in attendance.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: Of course, sixty-six.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: And if not, he could summon six to sixty-six of them in one round, as well as a less evil number of ghouls.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: I want to say it was like six to seventeen or something.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: So not five.
- 17:13SPEAKER_01: Not sixty-seven.
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: No.
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: Six, two.
- 17:16SPEAKER_03: Two sixty-six.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 17:19SPEAKER_02: That that feels like when your conspiracy theory grandma is trying really fucking hard to figure out how uh this relates to the devil.
- 17:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: Except like it literally it I mean, he it literally is a demon prince.
- 17:35SPEAKER_01: So don't have to look that far.
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: So uh Fiendfolio, which was published in 1981, introduced the flinned.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: Uh most of the physiological differences were not discussed until later.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: Uh, but flinns basically resemble s shorter and stockier knolls with shorter muzzles and rounder ears.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: So they look cuter.
- 17:55SPEAKER_03: I was like, are they just cuter then?
- 17:57SPEAKER_01: Like they're more akin to like dogs.
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: Like and like just a regular dog, yeah.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, to be fair, their their advanced dentists and dragon Sahara art was not cute, much like it was for was not cute.
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: Sorry.
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: Sorry.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: No, it's okay.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: Y'all know.
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: So they were very similar in behavior to gnolls who regarded Flynn's as higher beings, basically.
- 18:23SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 18:24SPEAKER_03: I was expecting the Flynn to be regarded as like a lesser variant between the knolls.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: Nope.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: Um, and they're there's given better, more concrete reasons for that later, but in Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, they basically just thought very highly of Flynn's for no particular reason.
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: Um, Flynn's were known for using a weapon called a flind bar, which basically was like a nunshaku that they used to disarm enemies as well as do damage.
- 18:49SPEAKER_01: So they were ninjas.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: No, they were not.
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: They were ninja dogs.
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: No, they were not.
- 18:54SPEAKER_03: Don't don't ruin this for me.
- 18:56SPEAKER_03: Ninja dogs.
- 18:57SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: Alright, fine.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: There's a rogue you can play a rogue flind and you can be a ninja dog.
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: Hell yes.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: So unlike no unlike Knolls, Flinds did not get along with trolls and are lawful evil.
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: Interesting.
- 19:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: I don't know why, but they were.
- 19:13SPEAKER_03: That is also different.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: I don't know what in particular was maybe the splitting off point between a gnoll and a flind, but they're here.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: There's one.
- 19:21SPEAKER_01: They're here and they have nunchucks.
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: So the the in Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd edition, the broad strokes of the gnolls remain the same between Advanced Dungeons and Dragons and the release of the monstrous manual that was published in 1993.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: And that's that's a theme.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: Like there's a there is a lot to talk about, but I will say the broad strokes of gnolls remain basically the same as what I just talked about.
- 19:49SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 19:49SPEAKER_01: So physiological details added include that gnolls have hands that can manipulate objects as well as any human can, so they can use computers.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: I don't know what that was my first thought.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: They could type.
- 20:01SPEAKER_02: You know, that's good for them.
- 20:02SPEAKER_01: They can type.
- 20:03SPEAKER_01: They could type if they wanted to, hypothetically.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: Uh, and also that females are equal to males in combat strength.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: There is basically no sexual dimorphism in their species.
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: So unless or at least nothing that the average human being.
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's it's said that you really can't tell the difference without closer examination, I think was the words used.
- 20:25SPEAKER_01: Or also if a null is pregnant or nursing.
- 20:28SPEAKER_01: Because you know.
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, kind of like dogs.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: Kind of like dogs.
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: They got that whole yeah.
- 20:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: Y'all know.
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: So the previous note about getting along with hobgoblins at all, as long as their strength is relatively equal, is plainly spelled out.
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: If the difference in group strength is too great, the stronger group will simply kill and eat the weaker.
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: So even if they get along.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: Well then.
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: I sure.
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: I mean, yeah.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: You know, sometimes you just get hungry and you gotta eat your friend.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: So they are stated to dislike goblins, which is funny, because they get along with every other type of goblinoid.
- 21:06SPEAKER_02: But not goblins.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: But not actual goblins.
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: They fucking they find goblins to be annoying, and that's just the end of it.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: That's bold coming from Knolls.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: So they dislike goblins, giants, kobolds, humans, demi-humans, and quote, any type of manual labor, unquote.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: They're really lazy guys.
- 21:27SPEAKER_03: They are super lazy.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: I love them.
- 21:31SPEAKER_01: So gnolls are carnivorous and preferred the taste of intelligent creatures because they screamed more.
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: Or perhaps the quote- What the fuck?
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: Perhaps the quote was screamed better.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: I don't remember.
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: You're like, I love them.
- 21:45SPEAKER_02: What the fuck?
- 21:46SPEAKER_02: You know.
- 21:47SPEAKER_02: I I might rescind my love a little bit.
- 21:49SPEAKER_02: Just a little bit.
- 21:51SPEAKER_03: No, I just I I I have nothing for that one.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's not that unusual, I feel like.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: I feel like that's what the Well that's what the edgy.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: like person in in an anime always says, you know?
- 22:03SPEAKER_03: It reminds me of the dude from Sin City.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: Or yeah, or like that.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: You know?
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: That's what that's what the edgy person always says.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: And gnolls aren't edgy, they're just hungry.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: So and like it better if you scream.
- 22:14SPEAKER_01: I mean who doesn't?
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: So in combat, gnolls seek to overwhelm their foes with great numbers and horde tactics.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: So, you know.
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: It in fitting with their very chaotic, let's say food-driven core.
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: However, when under the command of a leader type gnoll or a flind, uh, they diligently hold rank and work as a unit.
- 22:36SPEAKER_01: They're very um when it when it comes to mind.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well yeah, they're they they definitely, I would say, prioritize kind of their immediate pack over personal, you know.
- 22:49SPEAKER_01: Like a like a personal squabbles.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: Or like a say a personal desire for glory.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 22:54SPEAKER_03: It's just so strange to think about the fact that they can go from either being not really organized and just overrunning a place or to being strictly organized because they have like one person in charge of everything and they immediately just fall into line.
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:13SPEAKER_02: It's kind of bizarre to think about for sure.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: Um so they often the the kind of the source of them being nomadic is that they often deplete resources in an area by overhunting and then they simply move on.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: Because you know they don't understand the ecosystem.
- 23:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: They're just hungry.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: So Yunogu uh got a lot of fleshing out not that much because he's still gauntly thin in the supplement Monster Mythology, which was published in 1992, uh he's described as deposing the former gnoll patron Goralik.
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: So Goralik was a chaotic evil god from Pandemonium who was in decline even before being formerly deposed by Yinogu.
- 23:54SPEAKER_01: He was actually the one who originally taught the gnolls how to charm and tame hyenas which is pretty cool.
- 23:59SPEAKER_03: That is pretty cool.
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: But he did not create the gnolls and thus he did not have that as a like an advantage over Yinogu for their popularity.
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: And his shamanslash priests were also not as powerful as Yunogus because he could not provide them with this great of abilities.
- 24:19SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 24:19SPEAKER_01: Basically so Yunog's priests were described as quote witch doctors with power over the undead which I gotta say is a fucking metal image in my brain just like a witch doctor.
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah no it's patchwork doctor facilier no or uh I almost said gnome which is also cool but null you know I I do uh really enjoy that though yeah so uh Gorlik has mostly fallen to kind of the the rank of like a like a totem kind of animal you know like some people still respect him but like he's not he was he's not the gnoll patron god anymore.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: He yeah he doesn't quite garner as much like fear and like yeah uh what's the word I'm looking for here um clout clout I mean sure yeah um and he is also increasingly unpopular with Flynn's due to his own chaotic nature and propensity for like he just kind of wanders around pandemonium in the abyss is like a big hyena because he's mad that Yinogu stole all of his worshippers.
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: So he just sulks he just sulks around the abyss and pandemonium.
- 25:24SPEAKER_03: Fair fair okay I mean like I mean I would be a little salty about that too I ain't gonna lie.
- 25:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah well get with the times give your followers witch doctor powers.
- 25:33SPEAKER_01: That that would help.
- 25:34SPEAKER_03: That would definitely help.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah so Inogu's unspecified layer of the abyss is described as fetid and dismal and uh his avatar is as big as it is because Yinogu admires the strength of the evil giantish gods that he's come to associate with and basically wants to project this image to inspire his gnollish followers which is I mean yeah yeah I mean and if I could pick to be 12 feet tall I would too but but he he it he walks kind of a careful balance with that because you know his people don't like giants and they don't really associate with giants but he thinks some giant gods are kind of cool as long as they're evil.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: Right right gotta be evil.
- 26:20SPEAKER_01: So uh Yunogues Avatar cannot enter the prime without being sent via a gate spell a gate spell therefore he spends a lot of time communing with his priests to ensure his will is done.
- 26:31SPEAKER_01: I want to say a later a later book said that of the demon princess he's probably among one of the ones who spends the most time like interacting with his followers like telepathically that's interesting.
- 26:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah so he he takes care of his his children um but they're not actually his children because despite his ability to depose Gorilik Yinogu also cannot be credited with creating the gnolls who did it who created them we'll find out later but the at this point even the earliest of gnoll myths and like null oral history does not speak of their creation and it seems that they only value power which it I mean you know Gukin provides so they're fine.
- 27:18SPEAKER_01: They're happy.
- 27:18SPEAKER_03: I mean yeah he seems to do a pretty good job at granting them power so yeah but he did not create them.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: Hmm so third edition third edition third edition third edition as in Advanced Dungeons and Dragons second edition the broad strokes of the knoll remain the same um they had previously been categorized as large or even giant despite being the same size which this is roughly seven and a half feet tall so they're being described as medium in the three point uh three point oh not three point five the third edition monster manual which was published in 2000 is more to do with the evolution of the system so now they're now officially firmly medium sized creatures.
- 27:59SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 28:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah the system has evolved and numbers numbers have changed and so many numbers they kind of changed a lot of how it works so yeah that makes sense so gnolls are described specifically as being nocturnal and revering the phases of the moon but not nice same right but not actually having many priests or really much to do with the moon with religion.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: Oh you know but they maintain their penchant for horde tactics and ambushes but their cobbled together armor and penchant for carrying shields gives them a negative six to hide checks meaning that instead of like hiding they just kind of try to work the environment for surprise attacks by like you know attacking at night or you know like gorilla tactics knowledge of the area kind of thing.
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: Also a change is that instead of hyenas above ground settlements of gnulls keep dire lions as pets which I will say is fucking badass.
- 28:59SPEAKER_01: But also like why why not hyenas though?
- 29:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: Because they're they're they're they're hyena people maybe that's why I guess maybe yeah maybe they have the same mindset as I do sometimes when I see certain things or like the the fucking goofy and Pluto thing.
- 29:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:15SPEAKER_01: Maybe it's like that.
- 29:16SPEAKER_01: Maybe one yeah maybe when Knoll one day like looked at their hyena friend and was like wait wait a minute and then they like looked at looked down at themselves and they're like wait wait a minute something's not right here.
- 29:29SPEAKER_03: Let me go get me a lion we're gonna go get a dire lion instead.
- 29:33SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 29:33SPEAKER_03: Jesus badass though.
- 29:35SPEAKER_01: So um in addition these settlements are now described as being well fortified as opposed to I think the vibe before was that they were a little more just kind of haphazard.
- 29:46SPEAKER_01: Like they just killed everybody in town and then moved in but now it seems like they actually put some effort into like maintaining it.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: And fortify yeah and fortifying their settlements.
- 29:55SPEAKER_01: So tribes also often break apart if their leader dies and the squabbling among the next strongest takes too long.
- 30:02SPEAKER_01: They don't have a clear line of succession that has anything to do with anything with anything besides strength.
- 30:09SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 30:09SPEAKER_01: It's who is the strongest and I'm guessing at that point they have to prove that they're and fight each other and also worth noting is the generally ubiquitous third edition inclusion of usually in front of the alignment.
- 30:24SPEAKER_01: Which is my favorite thing because that opens up a lot of potential in my opinion for null characters who defy the chaotic evil conventions of their race.
- 30:35SPEAKER_01: Which we love to see which we we love to see we love to see exceptions and and fun characters and we love to have the door opened to that for creativity for for the rules purest Luna's taking a sip of the tea now it's actually water hydrate or didrate guys so okay what?
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: I mean it's it's true it's true it's important so curiously third edition introduces the god Erythnol into the sphere of gnoll concerns so in the Knolls Monster Mansion wow the Knoll's Monster Mansion Monster Mansion Yeah they live in mansion they live in mansions now and they do the monster mash in their monster mansion.
- 31:23SPEAKER_01: So in the Knoll's monster manual entry it's described that their clerics which it said they didn't have a lot of clerics and then so it's described that their clerics usually worship Erythnal who is described in Deities and Demigods which was published in 2002 as a pandemonium native chaotic evil god of quote these are his uh this is his portfolio hate envy malice panic ugliness and slaughter end quote I love it right which is very very null very evocative yeah so uh erythro sigil is a mask that is half of a boar's face and half of a demon's face because he's edgy naturally um and his his stocky red colored form often shifts in appearance between a human null bugbear ogre and troll which has earned him the title the many which creeps me out because that was what my character called in in our Pathfinder campaign called her unknown eldritch tentacally patron because she didn't know his real name but I hope it wasn't this guy because I hope it was no I just wanted to be Hermaeus Mora from Elder Schools because this guy fucking sucks.
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: I can neither confirm nor deny we'll talk after so in keeping with with his portfolio Erethnal's dogma instructs his followers to relish in violence for violence's sake and the notion of taking something from someone particularly a rival is a holy act what a great guy beautiful hilariously to me at least his clergy particularly love to deface beautiful locales and maim attractive people so this falls slightly out of the gnollish purview because you know they live they live off in the wilds on the countryside.
- 33:18SPEAKER_01: Right but the erythno's clergy's rural settlements tend to be exactly as Knoll settlements are described they're just like fucking you know yeah they just take over a town or whatever.
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: But yeah the so this clergy likes to maim attractive people I don't know which is just so like that's that's just there's a lot to unpack there.
- 33:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah like well that's uh that's chaotic evil for you yeah yeah you're not wrong yeah he is chaotic evil um so erythnal's relationship to Yunogu is briefly touched on in an aside in deities and demigods which is that while Yunogu is a powerful demon lord he is not a true god and therefore does not actually grant his clergy powers um and he's described in deities and demigods as a loyal servant of Erethnal and a middleman for null clergy basically so he's been downgraded.
- 34:19SPEAKER_01: It seems like this pivot doesn't last very long because for whatever reason um in the 3.5 Fiendish codex one Hordes of the Abyss which was published in 2006 they describe Yunogu as being able to grant his clerics powers and altogether don't really mention Erethnal.
- 34:39SPEAKER_01: So he was just there for a minute and it was like okay then they were like okay this is getting too complicated.
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: This guy's too edgy we need to gotta retract it this yeah we also finally get some more details about the creatively named realm he named it himself he's very proud I'm proud of him which is the 420 second layer of the abyss he needs and that's his goal is he's trying to move up two more layers so that way I can make a weed joke.
- 35:09SPEAKER_01: That way I can make a weed joke in my episode.
- 35:13SPEAKER_01: So um I don't have time to go into everything about Yinogu's realm but the main focus is that Yinogu lives in a citadel atop large stone rollers which is pulled by thousands of captured mortal slaves across a handful of specific destinations in his realm.
- 35:28SPEAKER_01: So he kind of just goes on tour.
- 35:30SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: Uh and his tour bus is slaves.
- 35:34SPEAKER_03: I like it so does he because he's for a demon lord you like the concept right I clearly do not like slavery just the concept of this dude being drug on these giant stone rollers is just funny.
- 35:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 35:49SPEAKER_01: So uh he delights in in hunting souls and idly planning moves against his enemies which include the Queen of succubi and Baphomet his most hated rival.
- 35:59SPEAKER_01: He and Baphomet really fucking hate each other.
- 36:02SPEAKER_01: I can tell so Inogu is described as wanting his children to dominate the Prime but he understands that with their current numbers they simply cannot so he accepts cultists from other races to further his end.
- 36:16SPEAKER_01: He also has some dominion over ghouls because basically he took over the 422nd layer of the abyss from the ghoul lord ghoul lord dorasane Jesus that's hard to say yeah so he's he's he's got ghouls he's got ghouls ghouls and and gnolls gnolls and ghouls so wow I think I just had a fucking stroke so um a stab lock is given for gnolls as characters in the 3.5 monster manual which was published in 2003 but more details and role playing advice is provided in Races of the Wild which was released for the Nintendo Switch in 20 no which was published in 2005.
- 36:59SPEAKER_01: I was like wait what?
- 37:01SPEAKER_01: Okay don't worry about it that actually testing our listeners yeah that actually leads me to the perfect notion to to or the perfect aside to say that moblins in Zelda remind me of gnolls.
- 37:12SPEAKER_01: Anyway oh yeah so the supplement spends a lot of time exploring the tribes of gnolls who are trying to pull their race out of savagery and create positive relationships with other races and I'm just gonna read a quote here.
- 37:24SPEAKER_01: Quote While most of their people remain mired in the cruelty of their demon prince, a few tribes of gnolls seek to pull themselves out of savager.
- 37:32SPEAKER_01: These tribes walk with weapons in hand knowing that the civilized races hate and fear their people and that other tribes of evil gnolls already seek to strike them down.
- 37:40SPEAKER_01: Geared more towards survival than the cruelty of their kin, these gnolls stand at a critical juncture either they will succeed in allying with the civilized races and pull some of their people away from the cruel worship of Inogu, or they will fail and their tribes will slip back into evil and brutality you'll see.
- 38:02SPEAKER_01: Oh no so even casting off their chaotic evil nature uh null adventures often struggle interacting with more charismatic races because they have the charisma of a gnull yeah so they are still used to the notion that the physically strongest person in any group should lead the group and have a dislike of staying in one place for too long.
- 38:26SPEAKER_01: Despite their negative two to intelligence and charisma gnolls do not see this as a weakness and take great pride in their natural strength and cunning.
- 38:35SPEAKER_01: A knoll adventurer is suspicious of others because of the civilized race's prejudice which is sometimes earned because of you know the rating and the murder and what have you right right you know that does happen sometimes.
- 38:47SPEAKER_01: But once someone has proven themselves to a knoll they are unflinchingly loyal to their new pack sibling so much they're very loyal.
- 38:57SPEAKER_02: That's a that's a I am not wrong for loving them.
- 39:00SPEAKER_03: No you're not it's just I don't know the way that they improved it and kind of like wrote that in is incredible actually.
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: And they Yeah yeah no it got me.
- 39:13SPEAKER_01: So fun facts that come from this for like PC gnolls is that many gnolls who turn away from Yinogu worship Obad High who is the unflinchingly loyal kind of green man figure god of nature or they reject religion entirely.
- 39:29SPEAKER_01: Knoll naming conventions also often favor a double R, such as Daror or Mirin, and gnolls are often given compound kind of like tribal nicknames such as Bloodfist or Great Fang.
- 39:40SPEAKER_01: Those were taken directly from the book hell yes this is my friend Great Fang Mirin.
- 39:45SPEAKER_03: See I was thinking Mirin Bloodfist.
- 39:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah that works too like that one too I also like that Great Fang is also just great it's so good.
- 39:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah so it's I love them so much.
- 39:59SPEAKER_01: You know what's embarrassing this is embarrassing guys I was like I actually teared up a little bit like when I was researching this and like reading certain things for some reason it just got me.
- 40:09SPEAKER_01: No you should say it.
- 40:10SPEAKER_01: This this like very forthright kind of earnest kind of dumb like null null kid you know it just I don't know I no I love it it just got me for some reason I don't know do you guys ever cry about Dungeons and Dragons?
- 40:25SPEAKER_01: Often actually it's kind of embarrassing well we're gonna take a little sabbatical real quick for you to go get over your embarrassment while we uh while we do our ads and Taylor and I can go cry.
- 40:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah it's actually just gonna be Travis doing our ads because Taylor and I need to go cry about this hypothetical noble player.

- 43:34SPEAKER_02: It's very confusing.
- 43:36SPEAKER_02: Yes it's incredibly confusing but most of the time they have notifications so whenever we post a new episode you will send you a notification which you will either be like okay go listen to or swipe away for later.
- 43:48SPEAKER_02: But it's okay.
- 43:49SPEAKER_02: We get it we do get it and on some of those platforms they have this little feature where you can rate and review podcasts and if you could just drop One in there, if it's one of those that has it, we'd really appreciate it.

- 44:14SPEAKER_02: Tell your family.
- 44:15SPEAKER_03: Tell your coworkers.
- 44:17SPEAKER_03: Tell the random person across the street at the bank.
- 44:19SPEAKER_02: Because you have to social distance right now, you can just scream it at them.
- 44:23SPEAKER_03: And that way even more people will hear it.
- 44:25SPEAKER_02: And they're like, what the fuck is Dungeon Pedia?
- 44:27SPEAKER_03: And then they Google it and they find us.
- 44:29SPEAKER_03: But also we have to thank one person specifically here.
- 44:35SPEAKER_02: Oh is it Santa?
- 44:38SPEAKER_03: No.
- 44:39SPEAKER_02: Is it our null friend?
- 44:40SPEAKER_03: Uh I mean, if our null friend is Alexander Nacarata, then yes.
- 44:44SPEAKER_02: Are you a null?
- 44:46SPEAKER_02: Imagine.
- 44:46SPEAKER_03: He might be a null.
- 44:48SPEAKER_02: Probably not, though.
- 44:49SPEAKER_03: But he is the one that made our theme song, Blacksmith.
- 44:52SPEAKER_03: So thank you, Alexander Nakarata.
- 44:54SPEAKER_03: Thanks beautiful.
- 44:55SPEAKER_03: We enjoy it.
- 44:55SPEAKER_01: There's a gift for everyone this holiday season.
- 44:58SPEAKER_01: As always.
- 44:59SPEAKER_02: And another gift this holiday season.
- 45:02SPEAKER_02: The second half of the null episode.
- 45:04SPEAKER_02: Let's get back to it.
- 45:05SPEAKER_01: Let's go.
- 45:08SPEAKER_01: So speaking of things that make me cry, we're gonna talk about fourth edition.
- 45:12SPEAKER_01: Oh god.
- 45:14SPEAKER_01: So I'm actually barely gonna talk about Knolls in the fourth edition Monster Manual, which was published in 2008.
- 45:20SPEAKER_01: Because quite frankly, like riding the high I just was uh after that, I think honestly it was the verbiage of that quote that really got me.
- 45:29SPEAKER_01: There was another one I didn't include that like had me crying in the fucking club.
- 45:33SPEAKER_01: But um, yeah, this is disappointing to say the least.
- 45:37SPEAKER_01: So Knolls are back to being a half page if you take out the variants, quote unquote, that mean absolutely nothing outside of a combat situation, and frankly, barely mean anything within a combat situation.
- 45:52SPEAKER_01: So they're back to being a half page long footnote on another chaotic evil monster encounter that scours the land in the name of their demon lord.
- 46:00SPEAKER_02: So you just took away any everything interesting about them.
- 46:04SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's how that makes me feel.
- 46:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 46:07SPEAKER_02: So the only I mean fourth edition messes something up and makes it less interesting.
- 46:11SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 46:13SPEAKER_01: I think I'm gonna have a heart attack of not surprised.
- 46:15SPEAKER_01: So the only interesting note is that on a DC-25 nature check, it's revealed that some captive slaves who show particular strength and ferocity can be indoctrinated into the knoll vanguard.
- 46:25SPEAKER_01: That's okay.
- 46:26SPEAKER_01: That's it.
- 46:27SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 46:28SPEAKER_01: So Yinogu is mentioned in the Demon Omicron, which was published in 2010.
- 46:32SPEAKER_01: Yinogu is mentioned in the Demon Omicron insofar as he gives a bunch of uninspiring buffs to loyal members of his death pack.
- 46:40SPEAKER_01: Uh he still commands layer 422 of the Abyss.
- 46:43SPEAKER_01: He has not moved up two layers yet.
- 46:45SPEAKER_01: God damn it.
- 46:46SPEAKER_01: Uh, and his inclusion in the book seems to lean very heavily on a dragon article for reference.
- 46:52SPEAKER_01: So he's kind of boring.
- 46:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 46:54SPEAKER_01: So said article comes from Dragon Magazine, issue 367, which was published in 2008.
- 47:01SPEAKER_01: And the article is named Playing Knolls by Drum Roll, please.
- 47:06SPEAKER_01: Keith Baker! Keith Baker's here to save us! Thank you, Keith.
- 47:10SPEAKER_01: I love you.
- 47:11SPEAKER_03: Keith Baker, welcome back.
- 47:14SPEAKER_01: We're so honored to have you on the podcast.
- 47:16SPEAKER_01: No.
- 47:17SPEAKER_01: I actually would die.
- 47:18SPEAKER_01: I would I would literally fucking die.
- 47:20SPEAKER_01: So this article finally explores the creation of the knoll in detail.
- 47:24SPEAKER_02: Okay, yes.
- 47:24SPEAKER_02: I need to know.
- 47:25SPEAKER_02: I need it.
- 47:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, same.
- 47:28SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 47:28SPEAKER_01: So Yinogu, the way back in the day, before Knolls, Yinogu sought to spread his influence across the mortal land, because he's a demon lord.
- 47:35SPEAKER_01: That's what they do.
- 47:37SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 47:37SPEAKER_01: Um, but his demons were too few in number.
- 47:40SPEAKER_01: So he took a few of his strongest demons and fed them to mortal hyenas, as you do.
- 47:45SPEAKER_01: It was a tough sell.
- 47:46SPEAKER_01: That was a tough sell at that meeting.
- 47:50SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 47:51SPEAKER_01: Um, and these mortal hyenas who consumed these demons uh then gave birth to what we know to be gnolls.
- 48:00SPEAKER_01: Don't ask me how that works.
- 48:02SPEAKER_03: Um I mean, I guess the demon weird used with the their essence.
- 48:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:09SPEAKER_03: The word essence was actually used.
- 48:10SPEAKER_03: So I mean that yeah.
- 48:12SPEAKER_01: That's all I got.
- 48:14SPEAKER_01: Uh fuck it essence.
- 48:18SPEAKER_01: But okay.
- 48:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, did you not expect Vor to be part of it?
- 48:20SPEAKER_01: Because I did.
- 48:22SPEAKER_02: You know, I didn't think about it like that until you just said it like that, and now I'm not very happy.
- 48:27SPEAKER_01: Um get over it.
- 48:29SPEAKER_01: Um in the next paragraph, it stated that while this is the accept a truth for gnolls and kind of like a story that they tell their young to inspire them, which now that I'm saying it out loud is kind of messed up, but whatever.
- 48:39SPEAKER_01: They're gnals.
- 48:40SPEAKER_01: Um, it said that it may very well be just a legend.
- 48:43SPEAKER_01: So that might not even be the truth.
- 48:45SPEAKER_01: But, you know.
- 48:47SPEAKER_01: At least it don't I I got nothing for you.
- 48:51SPEAKER_01: I mean, to be fair, at least it's like something that is like, well, maybe this is a legend instead of just being like, well, the exit the the creation of gnolls is shrouded in mystery.
- 49:02SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 49:03SPEAKER_01: You're not wrong.
- 49:04SPEAKER_01: At least it's something.
- 49:05SPEAKER_03: I mean, that's that's fair.
- 49:06SPEAKER_03: It's something.
- 49:07SPEAKER_03: It is something.
- 49:08SPEAKER_01: So this article does a lot for gnolls, both as alternative encounters to what is provided in the core text, which is chaotic evil killing machines, and also as player characters.
- 49:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so for the typical bloodthirsty packs of the Butcher's Brood, which is um the butcher is um one of Yunogoose titles, uh, he introduced the concept of clans having a slaver, which is called a Tanta Carash or Spirit Breaker in the abyssal language that Knolls speak a fragmented version of.
- 49:41SPEAKER_03: Beautiful.
- 49:41SPEAKER_01: Um, and this uh slaver specializes in torturing captive slaves both physically and mentally, which is not beautiful.
- 49:49SPEAKER_01: Not not as beautiful, not beautiful at all, one might say.
- 49:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, bad, one might say.
- 49:54SPEAKER_01: Um, in doing so, some or as a result of rather, some slaves become Christiantel, which is savage souls in aforementioned abyssal language, uh, who revel in combat just as their knoll masters do, and are regarded by the gnolls basically the same as they regard their hyena pets.
- 50:16SPEAKER_03: Which, I mean, let's face it, is a step up from slave.
- 50:19SPEAKER_01: I you're no, you know what?
- 50:22SPEAKER_01: You're not wrong.
- 50:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 50:23SPEAKER_01: And they have hyenas again, not lions, but dire lions, excuse me.
- 50:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, you're not wrong.
- 50:28SPEAKER_01: Um, so where you move up from there is in in in the process of this um, you know, torture and what have you.
- 50:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 50:37SPEAKER_01: Um, some Christiantel retain their intelligence, essentially making them gnolls in human form.
- 50:44SPEAKER_01: And they are used as scouts to evaluate the strength of potential potential raid conquests and also sabotage said places in a way that, you know, only a like a human, a human or demi-human passing person could.
- 50:58SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 50:59SPEAKER_01: Make it easier to raid and yeah, so you know, then they're basically like a like a like a spy or whatever.
- 51:06SPEAKER_01: So that's cool.
- 51:07SPEAKER_01: Definitely a step up from slave.
- 51:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's definitely I would say definitely, yeah.
- 51:12SPEAKER_01: So some gnolls embrace their hyena side more than their demonic side.
- 51:16SPEAKER_01: Over time, this has produced gnolls that do not revel in unnecessary bloodshed, but still retain a love for hunting and tracking and you know, the hunt and all that.
- 51:28SPEAKER_01: Um, these gnolls are typically unaligned, and while they retain their wild nature, they have come to terms with humanoids living in their areas.
- 51:36SPEAKER_01: So they'll they'll trade with them, they'll sell their services as hunters or trappers or whatever.
- 51:41SPEAKER_01: And while most gnolls, regardless of kind of their priorities, believe that they were created by Yinogu, some have turned to the worship of other deities.
- 51:52SPEAKER_03: No.
- 51:53SPEAKER_01: Just wait.
- 51:53SPEAKER_01: So some with a particularly strong connection to nature worship primal forces as opposed to deities.
- 51:59SPEAKER_01: Many clans worship Malora, and the Black Moon clan worship the Raven Queen and die there for black in homage to her.
- 52:07SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 52:08SPEAKER_01: Isn't that fucking awesome?
- 52:09SPEAKER_01: I I I love that actually.
- 52:11SPEAKER_01: Just these like ink black, uh, just these ink black gnolls howling at the fucking moon.
- 52:18SPEAKER_03: The raven queen by their side.
- 52:20SPEAKER_01: Wearing wearing feathers.
- 52:22SPEAKER_01: Fuck yeah.
- 52:24SPEAKER_01: Fuck yeah.
- 52:25SPEAKER_01: Fuck yeah.
- 52:25SPEAKER_01: You love to see it.
- 52:27SPEAKER_01: So, as a fourth edition, gnolls' willingness to eat carrion, because you know, they're hyenas.
- 52:34SPEAKER_01: They're hyena people, uh, including bones.
- 52:38SPEAKER_01: Uh, they have very strong stomachs, uh, means that typically a town raised by gnolls will not even have corpses, as gnolls have been known to dig up bodies from graves, which I'm sure is unrelated to the Buddha I talked about earlier, but it reminds me of them because they're they're hyena people and they're grave robbing.
- 52:56SPEAKER_01: I mean except I don't think the Buddha ate the bones.
- 52:59SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure though.
- 53:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 53:07SPEAKER_03: The Buddha, just the Buddha Buddha lowercase.
- 53:12SPEAKER_01: Buddha lowercase.
- 53:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 53:13SPEAKER_03: I'm connecting the dots.
- 53:15SPEAKER_03: The B-O-U-D-A Buddha.
- 53:16SPEAKER_03: I've connected them.
- 53:17SPEAKER_01: Or Bada?
- 53:19SPEAKER_01: Uh no, well, an alternative spelling was B-U-D-A, so I'm gonna say it is Buddha.
- 53:23SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 53:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you're probably right then.
- 53:26SPEAKER_01: So, uh the eat bones.
- 53:29SPEAKER_03: Yay.
- 53:30SPEAKER_01: So female gnals are largely indistinguishable from males.
- 53:33SPEAKER_01: Um that's the same as the same as before.
- 53:37SPEAKER_01: Though it said, this is interesting to me.
- 53:39SPEAKER_01: It's said that in some clans the females are larger than the males, and also that this general lack of sexual dimorphism has led to the incorrect rumor that gnoles are hermaphrodites or can change sex.
- 53:51SPEAKER_01: And this may be influenced by real-life spotted hyenas in which the females are larger than the males and also have very similar genitals and higher than typical levels of androgens.
- 54:02SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 54:03SPEAKER_03: I was not aware of this.
- 54:04SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 54:05SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 54:05SPEAKER_02: Yes, that yes.
- 54:07SPEAKER_02: Uh there's an alpha female in hyena pack, but not an alpha male.
- 54:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 54:13SPEAKER_01: And also the females fuck each other.
- 54:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 54:15SPEAKER_01: With their yeah, with their very similar genitals.
- 54:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 54:18SPEAKER_02: And also the females um fuck all of the males.
- 54:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 54:22SPEAKER_02: Like there's It's just a fuck fest.
- 54:25SPEAKER_01: What the Femdom fuck fest.
- 54:28SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 54:29SPEAKER_02: Sorry.
- 54:29SPEAKER_02: Sorry, the alpha female fucks all the males.
- 54:32SPEAKER_02: Not not the other way around.
- 54:33SPEAKER_02: Or not rather, not any other female females.
- 54:37SPEAKER_01: Taylor and I are making a lot of hand gestures.
- 54:39SPEAKER_02: I don't know why I know this much about hyenas.
- 54:42SPEAKER_01: I don't see why you do either.
- 54:43SPEAKER_01: I I when I looked into this, I was like, I need to find an opportunity to talk about female hyena penis somewhere in this episode.
- 54:52SPEAKER_01: And you know what?
- 54:53SPEAKER_01: I did.
- 54:53SPEAKER_01: And it was in fourth edition.
- 54:55SPEAKER_03: Good job.
- 54:56SPEAKER_03: I'm sure our listeners appreciate that.
- 54:58SPEAKER_01: They should.
- 54:59SPEAKER_01: They should.
- 55:00SPEAKER_01: You're welcome, guys.
- 55:01SPEAKER_01: So in including things they should appreciate, here's some tips and tricks from Keith Baker about Knoll player characters.
- 55:09SPEAKER_01: So when considering a knoll player character, it's important to ask exactly why they are away from their pack, because like I've discussed, knolls are very like pack.
- 55:17SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 55:18SPEAKER_01: So uh your knoll PC may be a fugitive being hunted by their original pack for crimes such as having compassion or having a disdain for mindless slaughter.
- 55:29SPEAKER_01: Oh wow.
- 55:30SPEAKER_01: How dare you! What a terrible thing.
- 55:33SPEAKER_01: Um they may be gladiators who were captive or who were um fucking yeah.
- 55:40SPEAKER_01: Um they may be gladiators who were captured uh and made to be gladiators in community where slavery is still legal.
- 55:48SPEAKER_01: That's a yeah.
- 55:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 55:50SPEAKER_01: Or they may be an orphan pup who is raised outside of their race.
- 55:55SPEAKER_03: Which that one seems like the easiest thing to like go around, but at the same time, there's so many cool things you could do with it.
- 56:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 56:05SPEAKER_01: So uh other races interacting with gnolls often find them aggressive even when they're being friendly.
- 56:11SPEAKER_01: But for gnolls, this is just a natural way of establishing hierarchy.
- 56:14SPEAKER_01: So for example, instead of asking a question, a knull may demand an answer, i.e., they they don't ask what do you or like they don't ask what do you want.
- 56:23SPEAKER_01: They say, tell me what you want.
- 56:26SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 56:26SPEAKER_02: Okay, yeah.
- 56:28SPEAKER_01: And and you know, to them it's just kind of a natural hierarchy.
- 56:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 56:32SPEAKER_01: It's how they do.
- 56:34SPEAKER_01: But I think it's funny, just like a knoll, just like grabbing their small human friend by the shoulders and shaking them and being like, tell me what you want from the markets! I'm getting lunch.
- 56:48SPEAKER_01: I I do enjoy that.
- 56:49SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 56:50SPEAKER_01: It's it's just precious to me.
- 56:51SPEAKER_01: Again, I'm that very forthright earnest, young knoll, barely barely an adult.
- 56:58SPEAKER_01: So even less demonic gnolls love to collect trophies of their conquests.
- 57:03SPEAKER_01: So for a gnoll with cobbled together armor, they will remember the story of the acquisition of every strip of leather, every animal horn, you know, every little chain link.
- 57:14SPEAKER_01: Which is just like I love it.
- 57:15SPEAKER_01: Tama's fucking dying.
- 57:17SPEAKER_01: I am.
- 57:17SPEAKER_01: I'm also dying.
- 57:19SPEAKER_01: So, as in a, you know, completely null pack, null adventurers are loyal to those they consider friends and can easily put aside personal glory for the glory and needs of the community.
- 57:30SPEAKER_01: Like I said, they're very pack focused.
- 57:33SPEAKER_01: Even if their pack is like a chosen pack.
- 57:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 57:36SPEAKER_01: A found pack, if you will.
- 57:40SPEAKER_01: Oh my goodness Don't make fun of me, okay?
- 57:43SPEAKER_01: Taylor and I are fucking Taylor and I are fucking found family hoes over here.
- 57:47SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 57:47SPEAKER_01: And we're not ashamed.
- 57:49SPEAKER_01: So, uh, well, I this is mostly for player characters.
- 57:52SPEAKER_01: I mean, I guess if you were a DM, you could give like an antagonist some of these.
- 57:56SPEAKER_01: Just fuck your fuck your players.
- 57:58SPEAKER_01: But um, this article provides some interesting feats, including, well, most no, a lot of them are just like damage buffs, what have you.
- 58:06SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 58:07SPEAKER_01: But the two most interesting ones are Carrion Eater, which gives Knolls a plus four to saving throws against poison and endurance checks relating to resisting disease on account of all the dead things they eat.
- 58:20SPEAKER_01: This victim got very strong stomachs.
- 58:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 58:23SPEAKER_01: And also Butcher's lure, which allows them to throw their voice and mimic specific people or sounds using ghost sound as an at-will ability.
- 58:32SPEAKER_03: Damn.
- 58:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 58:33SPEAKER_01: Isn't that fucking cool?
- 58:35SPEAKER_01: Damn.
- 58:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 58:37SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 58:38SPEAKER_01: And so this brings us to fifth edition.
- 58:42SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 58:44SPEAKER_01: So, um, I gotta say, oh no.
- 58:48SPEAKER_01: I am not the biggest fan of Fivey's portrayal of gnolls so far.
- 58:53SPEAKER_01: Um, and it's always worth noting that they might release something.
- 58:58SPEAKER_01: They might release something in the future, you know.
- 59:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, that's the thing about an edition that's still be making stuff.
- 59:06SPEAKER_02: Source books.
- 59:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 59:07SPEAKER_01: So in the monster manual, which was published in 2014, gnolls are described as chaotic, evil, tribally organized, butchers, yet again.
- 59:16SPEAKER_01: Which I mean, to be fair, has always been their core portrayal, but you know.
- 59:21SPEAKER_02: It's nice when they go a little bit off script.
- 59:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 59:24SPEAKER_01: So the uh origin story of their creation has changed a little, uh, instead purporting that Yinogu made his way to the prime and went on a rampage, as he does, because he's Yinogu.
- 59:36SPEAKER_01: Um, then hyena followed and scavenged his kills and were transformed into the first gnolls.
- 59:44SPEAKER_01: So you know, it kind of kind of kind of similar, but instead the hyenas themselves became gnolls as opposed to their offspring.
- 59:53SPEAKER_03: Rather yeah, rather than giving birth to a knoll.
- 59:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 59:56unknown: Hmm.
- 59:56SPEAKER_01: So Yenogu then bestowed the new newly formed gnolls with an unending hunger that can be only quelled temporarily by killing and consuming intelligent beings.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_01: So that sucks for them.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_03: That's kind of rude.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, right.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like and he was basically like, alright, go forth.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_03: You have this unending hunger now.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_03: Have fun.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_01: Eat things.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_01: Take over the world for me, bae! Eatings, bae.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna go back to the abyss now.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_01: I do what I want.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_01: Work on work on layer 420 down there.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_01: So, uh, gnolls have always squabbled amongst themselves, but fifth edition kind of removed any mention of their strong pack loyalty.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_01: Which, you know.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_01: So gnolls see bloodshed as a holy act, and while they're not known for complicated rituals, after battle they'll paint the sigil of Yinogu or some other demonic sigils, you know.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_01: Looking for looking for something wherever you can get it.
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_01: They will paint the sigil upon themselves, usually with blood, of course, uh, in hopes to curry Yinogu's favor or the favor of, you know, whatever.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_01: So gnolls are in general obsessed with the idea of signs from Inogu and will use them, whether they are real or imagined, to guide the actions of their pack.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_01: So they're they're really into signs.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_01: They're always looking for signs, you know.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_01: They look for they look for yellow trucks and they see a lot of yellow trucks, you know?
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_01: Even when they're not really there.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_01: They just make stuff up at that point as well.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_02: I I feel bad for them now.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_02: I don't like what 5th edition has done to them.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_01: So gnolls that do gainogus favor are then possessed by a demonic spirit and become what's called fangs of yinogu.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_01: So, in a similar way to 5th edition's story about the creation of the first gnolls, uh hyenas that feast upon the kills of a yinogu fang or of a fang of yinogu, excuse me, uh are transformed into fully grown gnolls.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_03: Okay, so really gaining his favor does nothing for you.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_01: I mean, you get stronger.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_01: You do get stronger.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_01: There's a in the in the st I hate to say this.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_01: Um in in kind of the style of a fifth edition or fourth edition, pardon, there's like a uh null pack lord and a null uh fang of Yinogu, but they're basically just like souped up null pack lord.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_01: Nothing really nothing nothing really special going on there.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_01: So Yunogu himself, the man of the hour, makes an appearance in Morden Kinen's Tome of Foes, which was published in 2018.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_01: Uh his realm has been named the Death Dells, whether or not that's by other people who are more creative, or himself, I'm not sure.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_01: But he finally came up with a good name for his realm.
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_01: I personally like Yonogu's realm, but whatever.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_01: Um, he's uh 14 feet tall now.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_01: He grew two feet.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_01: Jeez.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_01: And his weapon has been named The Butcher.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_03: Is it still the same?
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's still the candlestick maker.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's still the three ball, three balls.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_01: Three ball flail.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_01: And it's just called the butcher.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_01: The butcher.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_01: Which I mean is a pretty good name for a weapon.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_01: I mean, he does butcher with it.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_01: I love that name for a weapon.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_01: So anyone who comes within one mile of his lair on the Death Dells can be subject to a madness that, depending on a roll against a table, makes the target or victim, I guess, act like a knoll in a variety of ways.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_01: So, you know, you just get the unmistakable urge to eat your friends.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_01: Or, you know, you want to howl at the moon and stuff.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure if that was actually one of them.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_01: I think it might have been, but you know.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_01: Um, and obviously this can be cured and you know the ways that other types of madness are.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_02: Sorry, I I just yeah.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_02: I'm just very angry about this knolls right now.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_01: So some variants are introduced or reintroduced in Volo's Guide to Monsters, which was published in 2016.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_01: Uh Flynn's, flins are back, remember them.
- 1:04:19SPEAKER_01: Um Bright.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_01: Uh flins are described as no longer shorter and stockier, but larger and stronger knolls.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_01: Um, and they carry a weapon with Yinogu's blessing.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_01: So it's a flail pretty similar to the flint bar that I described earlier.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_01: And it both does damage and saps uh strength from the target, and by strength I mean hit points.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_01: Um so there's never more than one flind in a pack, and due to their rarity, gnolls consider flints to be special messengers from their god.
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_03: I mean, the fact that they're carrying a weapon that's blessed by their god, I can see why.
- 1:04:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:04:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_01: Um it said if a knoll kills a flind and takes their tail, that knoll will be transformed into a flint.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_01: So I don't know if that's how you get flints.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_01: If that's the only way to get flints, I really don't know.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_01: I mean, I would guess that Yu Goku can create them.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_02: Here's a here's a flint.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_02: Go do go do Flint stuff.
- 1:05:19SPEAKER_03: But also, if a knull is strong enough to kill one, then you can become one.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_01: You know, the the witch who's strong enough to eat the president should become the next president, you know.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_01: It feels like a blend of things.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_01: It's I don't even know.
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_01: I might have spun that one off of my insane hungry dome.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:05:40SPEAKER_01: But uh gnolls also keep the bones of their fallen brethren so that a flind or pack lord can perform a ritual to transform a collection of these bones into a witherling, which is an undead knoll, basically.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_01: It's a stall knoll, basically.
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_03: Damn.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_01: Um, witherlings may have honestly been.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_01: Been introduced as a variant in an earlier edition.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_01: But just kind of lost over the it's a it's a stall knoll, right?
- 1:06:07SPEAKER_01: You know.
- 1:06:08SPEAKER_03: It's it's fine.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's an undead knoll.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_01: It's fine.
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_03: Sounds pretty cool to me, but yeah.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, I mean, you know, they they they do knoll things, they don't have flesh, you know.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_01: So knolls are mentioned in the Explorer's Guide to Wildmount.
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, which was published in 2020, which is crazy.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_01: That is I feel like we talked about this last time that I that it was mentioned, but it's wild to me that I'm talking about a source book that did that didn't exist.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_01: Well, I say exist, like that hadn't been published when we started this podcast.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_01: We're literally watching history unfold at the hands of Matthew Mercer.
- 1:06:53SPEAKER_01: It's like crazy.
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_03: Man, it is very crazy.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_03: Just uh right.
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_03: So they were in the Explorer's Guide to Wildmount.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_01: Yes, and they are mentioned as finding places in the communities of the Crin Dynasty, which is a mostly drow nation.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean it's it's a drow nation, mostly populated by drow, um, that is also otherwise populated by other outsider races.
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_01: Like gnolls.
- 1:07:19SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_01: So there's some there's some cities in the crin dynasty that have like a 15-16% knoll population.
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_01: That's fine.
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_03: Kind of cool.
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_03: That is pretty cool.
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_03: And I mean, just yeah, there you go.
- 1:07:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, just that whole thing, just yeah, a whole bunch of random outsider races just chilling together.
- 1:07:38SPEAKER_01: Just vibrant.
- 1:07:40SPEAKER_02: I I love it.
- 1:07:40SPEAKER_01: I love to see it.
- 1:07:41SPEAKER_01: I love to see it.
- 1:07:43SPEAKER_01: But thus far, near as I can tell, I have not found anything for gnolls as player characters in fifth edition.
- 1:07:51SPEAKER_01: Give it to us, you cowards.
- 1:07:53SPEAKER_01: Oh god.
- 1:07:54SPEAKER_03: Whoa.
- 1:07:55SPEAKER_02: Sorry.
- 1:07:55SPEAKER_02: I'm just very much in love with the the Knoll creation that I know.
- 1:08:01SPEAKER_01: This this young Ernest Knoll man.
- 1:08:04SPEAKER_02: I love him.
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_02: He's the best boy.
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_01: You know, he's a good boy.
- 1:08:10SPEAKER_01: So that's Knowles.
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_01: So that's Knowles.
- 1:08:12SPEAKER_01: That is Knowles.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_01: Eight out of eight book cover creatures done.
- 1:08:16SPEAKER_01: Another iconic monster in the bag.
- 1:08:19SPEAKER_03: Another one down.
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_01: Another one bites the dust.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_02: Well, that's that's it for that little um continuation.
- 1:08:25SPEAKER_02: What are you gonna do next?
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:08:28SPEAKER_01: Elf part two.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_01: What?
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_01: What's an elf?
- 1:08:31SPEAKER_01: I only know gnolls.
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_03: Only no gnolls.
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_01: Nothing but gnolls.
- 1:08:36SPEAKER_03: Nothing but gnolls.
- 1:08:38SPEAKER_01: The highly anticipated sequel to Nothing but Gnomes.
- 1:08:41SPEAKER_01: They're not related except for the fact that gnolls were gnome trolls in like the white box set, and then after that.
- 1:08:48SPEAKER_03: At the very beginning.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_02: Thank you guys so much for listening.
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_01: If we actually name the episode that, I'm gonna fucking hate myself.
- 1:09:00SPEAKER_01: It's been it's been a it's been a year.
- 1:09:04SPEAKER_02: We're not reflecting.
- 1:09:05SPEAKER_02: Oh, right, that's right.
- 1:09:06SPEAKER_01: We're not reflecting this week.
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_02: We're not reflecting at all.
- 1:09:08SPEAKER_02: Oh, right, gotcha.
- 1:09:09SPEAKER_01: That's next week.
- 1:09:11SPEAKER_01: That's never.
- 1:09:12SPEAKER_02: Don't forget to follow us on our various social media platforms on Twitter, on Instagram.
- 1:09:17SPEAKER_02: We've been trying to be more active on Twitter lately, posting occasional hilarious poll.
- 1:09:23SPEAKER_01: Searching out art and things of null player characters now.
- 1:09:27SPEAKER_01: Oh, yes.
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_02: That's actually that's our challenge for next week when we post this episode.
- 1:09:32SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 1:09:33SPEAKER_02: Um, if you guys don't mind spreading the word to your friends, your friends who like gnolls?
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_01: They have to exist, I assume.
- 1:09:39SPEAKER_01: Your friends who like hyenas?
- 1:09:41SPEAKER_01: Your friends who like dogs?
- 1:09:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:09:43SPEAKER_03: Your DM friends.
- 1:09:45SPEAKER_02: Your DM friends, yes, who don't know how to include gnolls, who are like, what are gnolls?
- 1:09:49SPEAKER_02: They they need to know.
- 1:09:51SPEAKER_03: There's no reason to be scared of including them now.
- 1:09:53SPEAKER_03: It's all here.
- 1:09:55unknown: Do it.
- 1:09:56SPEAKER_01: If you have anything you would like to suggest as a topic, now that I I've finished the last of that thread, and I feel like it would probably be excessive for me to do too many more dragons, you can email us at dungeonpedia.podcast at gmail.com to suggest things.
- 1:10:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:10:13SPEAKER_01: Because I am lost.
- 1:10:14SPEAKER_01: And with like I am in the rest of my life.
- 1:10:17SPEAKER_02: And thank you guys once again for listening.
