Transcript
- 0:00You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast the First
- 0:03Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:05On our podcast, the goal is not just to share our sermons, but
- 0:08to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're learning and
- 0:11what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:14The conversation you're about to join was inspired by our Spring
- 0:17Mixtape 2025 non series sermon series.
- 0:21Rather than a series, this will be a collection of sermons based
- 0:24on what God is leading us to preach on this spring.
- 0:27You can find out more information about our church at
- 0:29fumccollingswood.org. Thanks for joining us for this
- 0:32conversation. So Jeremy, you really jumped
- 0:38into the deep end of the pool this week with your sermon.
- 0:43Did I? You did.
- 0:45You did. OK.
- 0:48I think you did, yeah. I mean, certainly not a bad
- 0:51thing. It's just it's not every day you
- 0:56walk into church or in my case, put on the podcast and, you
- 1:02know, hear someone wrestling with what Paul's talking about
- 1:06there in chapters 6-7 and eight of Romans.
- 1:09And, you know, I think most of the time pastors at best are
- 1:14like, are most likely to just kind of ignore those chapters
- 1:19and not really wrestle with the reality of them.
- 1:24Or hone in on like two to six verse section of them and just
- 1:30focus more on like the plain reading of.
- 1:32I think it's hard for a lot of pastors and churches to approach
- 1:36that section and let go of their already preconceived notions of
- 1:45what Paul is saying there. So hopefully it was helpful to
- 1:50people. How'd you end up there though?
- 1:54What what led you to jump into? That section in general, yeah,
- 2:00or like. Or to that idea like what how
- 2:03did how did God get you to want to preach that sermon from that
- 2:07passage? So there's a chapter.
- 2:10One of the books I had to do a review on for school was called
- 2:14To Be Holy by John Oswalt. Oswalt Dang it, one day I'll get
- 2:20it right on this podcast maybe. And I was, I think I talked
- 2:24about it earlier on the podcast of just like the first half of
- 2:27the book, I hadn't even finished it.
- 2:28And in the second-half, he really dives into this argument
- 2:34of believers not only being called to holiness, but the
- 2:41capacity to be more holy than maybe we either deemed possible
- 2:48or whatever. Because we know ourselves and we
- 2:50know our limitations. But we seem to focus more on
- 2:54that than on God and his lack of limitations of what he can do in
- 2:59general and what he can do in and through us.
- 3:02And so that's where I kind of started out with was like from
- 3:07that. And then I never even read that
- 3:08chapter last week, but like, like I was going to reference
- 3:11it, but kind of that that general thing.
- 3:15And then I was like, I this would be a whole series.
- 3:19Yeah. To go through all of Chapter 6
- 3:22and 7 and 8. And so which I did.
- 3:25Offer to you at one point. So then, but I, yeah, because I
- 3:30have, I'm, I'm preaching this coming week as well.
- 3:33And I couldn't find a part where like you would just cliffhanger
- 3:37and be like, oh, well, we just spent a whole Sunday to not get
- 3:40to a point and then next week we'll finish it up.
- 3:45I didn't know how to make it possible.
- 3:47I didn't know where to hone in. And then Angela Mess, I'll throw
- 3:52out her name, sent me a YouTube link of a, of a guy because we'd
- 3:57been like talking about Romans 6 through 8 and of a guy that she
- 4:03follows. Actually, she volunteers for the
- 4:06Wise Disciple and he had a video focusing in on this section of
- 4:12Chapter 7 and he points to reasonings within the text and
- 4:15wording in chapter 6 and 8. And I was like, OK, I really
- 4:19liked how he didn't have to go through all of the chapters, but
- 4:24he could focus on just a few to get us associated with the
- 4:28concept and the understanding of it.
- 4:31And then where do we go from there?
- 4:35And we and we went with like a similar conclusion, but he used
- 4:41very different texts. And it was his, his conclusion
- 4:44and application was very, very quick and short.
- 4:46He was more just focused on. Working through the.
- 4:49Yeah, working through the text and showing that it's not Paul
- 4:52talking about his current experience.
- 4:55And so that helped me give like a, a framework of how to tackle
- 4:59this in a way that's not as crazy.
- 5:01And then there was a there was a couple things that shifted
- 5:04around through the week that I guess since I'm talking about
- 5:07it, I'll just talk, keep talking.
- 5:09Here we are. That's.
- 5:10That's. What the podcast is for.
- 5:12So I, there were, there was a version of this sermon in which
- 5:16I ended the sermon before the prayer.
- 5:21The as in like I, I acted as if that whole first section was the
- 5:26entirety of my sermon. And then I would say, OK, let's
- 5:30close in prayer. And you know, that'd be like 5-6
- 5:32minutes, right? Which no one would be surprised
- 5:34of from me. But then I would afterwards be
- 5:37like, oh, I'm getting some dirty looks from SPRC members.
- 5:41I guess I should keep on going because I think that many people
- 5:48would anticipate that first section to be the sermon itself.
- 5:51But it's, it's what's expected. And in a lot of places it's
- 5:54what's taught regularly because as I spoke in the sermon of like
- 5:59you do a plain reading and you're just reading that
- 6:01section. It's hard to get any other
- 6:05conclusion from that section. So that was shifted in the in
- 6:12the towards the end where I was talking about not focusing on
- 6:15the do's and don'ts, but whose we are and who we have to help.
- 6:21I was going to go into kind of like a back and forth of we are
- 6:25this because of God or God says we are this, we are not this and
- 6:29kind of going back and forth. And that got shifted Saturday
- 6:33night when I showed up and I was like, Oh, I'm like pretty much
- 6:36done. Let me just like connect a
- 6:39couple pieces. And then God just kept like
- 6:42providing things over and over again.
- 6:44And that was one of the changes that came out of that and giving
- 6:47phrases and all this stuff. And at one point I was like, I
- 6:53don't know, I felt like I wasn't capable of doing justice to what
- 6:58God wanted me to share. So I just like, I wasn't arguing
- 7:03with God, but I was just like, God, I, I don't know how to
- 7:07convey what you're providing me to the congregation.
- 7:11Well, yeah. And then at one point he was
- 7:14just like, have you not been paying attention to the entire
- 7:18sermon you've been preparing? I was like, oh.
- 7:21Not about you, Jeremy it. Doesn't have to be by my own
- 7:24power and me doing the thing. I'm like, OK, God, I I literally
- 7:28smacked myself in the forehead sanctuary so hard because I was
- 7:32like, wow, it it. And that's the thing.
- 7:34That's why I think it's so important to delve into this
- 7:37text and wrestle with this and not just be like interesting
- 7:40concept and be done. Because like, even though I've
- 7:43been ruminating on it slightly for maybe a month and intensely
- 7:48for the past couple of weeks, it can still just stick to head
- 7:54knowledge and you not know it with your heart.
- 7:56Yeah, like live it out. Well, and and it's not just
- 8:00about sin. Yeah, right.
- 8:02Like that's, that's what Paul's focusing in on.
- 8:04It's easy to just stay there and think, all right, this this
- 8:08whole passage is all about what God is or isn't able to do in
- 8:13regard to the sin and the way we live our lives.
- 8:16But we we don't realize that it's all about what God is able
- 8:23to do in a human person, Right. And that's exactly what God was
- 8:29finally trying to get through to you.
- 8:31Yeah, yeah. So it was, it was a beautiful
- 8:36time Saturday night. Like I went in and I was like,
- 8:38I'll be done by 9:30. I'll get a good night's sleep.
- 8:42And then I was there till like 12/30, 1:00.
- 8:46But it wasn't like I told her back.
- 8:47I was like, I'm doing fine. Like this is great.
- 8:49Like I'm I'm enjoying this time with God in preparation and then
- 8:55the only other shift that I guess people that were in either
- 8:58services. I used all Scripture NIV for
- 9:03service, all Scripture NLT second service.
- 9:06And there are some big enough changes in wording that it did
- 9:11change kind of how I talked about it afterwards.
- 9:15Still in the NIV it says, but those who live in accordance
- 9:19with the Spirit have their mind set on what the Spirit desires.
- 9:24So then I went on like mindset, what does the Spirit desire?
- 9:28He desires the same thing as the Father Son and went and then we
- 9:30went into the freedom and what does the Father and Son desire?
- 9:34But in the NLT, it uses the phrasing of, but those who are
- 9:42controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please
- 9:48the Spirit. And so like, same meaning, but
- 9:51how you like talk about those things.
- 9:53Yeah, I felt like it's more direct in the one text than the
- 9:57other. And so that was another
- 10:00variation, more of the more prominent variation I would say.
- 10:05Curious, as you were thinking through all of this sermon and
- 10:11what God's able to do and what sin means for us now and what it
- 10:17is to live in the Spirit, did you think at all about Genesis 2
- 10:24and 3? We're just reflecting on the
- 10:26fall in general. Yeah, because I, because the
- 10:30reason I ask is I think so often we get wrapped up in this idea
- 10:35that, you know, Romans 7 is Paul describing his current
- 10:41experience. Because we only ever start our,
- 10:46our theological anthropology, right?
- 10:49Our. Our.
- 10:51Idea isn't anthropology. Like, never mind.
- 10:55Yes, I'm with you, okay. The study of humanity, right?
- 10:58Not where I was going with it. That's why I stopped myself.
- 11:00Okay, all right, But this, this theological anthropology, this
- 11:05idea, this kind of biblical framework of what humanity is,
- 11:11we start that post Genesis 3. Yeah.
- 11:16You know, and, and we make Genesis 3 and the fall the
- 11:20limiting factor of humanity and completely ignore that God's
- 11:27creative intention for humanity preceded that fall and it's.
- 11:33Possible to live that for a while?
- 11:35Yeah, right before the. And, and not just for a while,
- 11:40right? Because Jesus did as well,
- 11:42right? And so.
- 11:44That's why it's so important that he was fully human, yes,
- 11:48and fully God, because it was only partially then he didn't
- 11:51give a an example that it is possible.
- 11:54Right, yeah, but and so I just I I think we we limit what God can
- 12:00do if we only start with humanity after Genesis three,
- 12:07Yeah. Any thoughts about how that?
- 12:12I mean there so if you so I get I hopefully by Wednesday you
- 12:17guys have till Wednesday. You've done the homework I
- 12:20assigned at Sunday. Which was to read Jenna Romans
- 12:246-7 and eight. Yeah.
- 12:26Hopefully, you know, in close succession, if not all at once,
- 12:31yeah. Because in there there's a
- 12:34section that like, I didn't really dive into, but it's
- 12:36talking about like kind of the history of sin and the law and
- 12:44like how it makes us dead. And I think Adam's even thrown
- 12:47in there where it's, you know, the interplay of like the law.
- 12:52Let us know what is good and then we send afterwards because
- 12:56we knew what was good. So the law didn't 'cause our
- 12:59death. But it like I'm I already know
- 13:01that I'm butchering some of the phrasing, but it is very
- 13:05intricate and intentional. And so I think that part kind of
- 13:11alludes to what you're talking about, about how from Adam, pre
- 13:17fall, post fall, all the way to the Israelites receiving the
- 13:20commandments, what that meant for us and sin in our
- 13:24relationship with God. And there's a lot happening in
- 13:27those chapters. Yeah, there's a lot happening,
- 13:30yeah. Yeah, easily some of the densest
- 13:34parts of of the New Testament and.
- 13:38And and that's the thing I think dense because it covers a lot
- 13:42and it and it can shift how we view parts of the faith, parts
- 13:48of Scripture, parts of our personal life.
- 13:51But I think if we deem some of those things impossible because
- 13:56our emotions are experienced, the theology we've grown up with
- 14:00or we've gotten ourselves into, then we're withholding what God
- 14:06is going to do in our life. Or we're like putting some sort
- 14:10of barrier of like there's no condemnation in Christ.
- 14:15Oh, I just listened to a great. Great.
- 14:18Podcast, I know you're tired of hearing about him, but Francis
- 14:22chanted his first podcast in years, right?
- 14:25And not that I get notifications about that, but it just happens
- 14:31to be. He's just been watching every
- 14:32day. In years.
- 14:34And he was talking about a church pastor that had worked in
- 14:40the business world and specifically in like, training
- 14:43businesses on how to maximize profits and all that kind of
- 14:48stuff. And he would always tell
- 14:51businesses to hire insecure overachievers and their
- 14:57production will always go up infinitely.
- 15:00Yeah. And he was very saddened because
- 15:05when he got into ministry, he found that mindset influencing
- 15:12how he would preach and lead people because if they were told
- 15:17there's no condemnation under Christ, it would relieve them of
- 15:20the insecurity. And in his mind, it was he was
- 15:25trying to do it for their benefits.
- 15:26Like the more insecure they are, the more it will push them into
- 15:30the doing the good works that God wants of them.
- 15:33So if we take away that insecurity, then they'll just
- 15:37get complacent and not want do what God calls us to.
- 15:41Sure. And he's like, but when I'm
- 15:43looking at Scripture, it's as we lean into who God is, when we
- 15:46think of the things that the Spirit desires, that the, you
- 15:50know, all of this kind of stuff and truly accept the love of
- 15:55God, that's what stirs up and leads to the actions.
- 15:59Not the insecurity of not being good enough and falling short
- 16:03and all of that. But we can move confidence not
- 16:05in our works, but what Christ has done on the cross and what
- 16:08God has done. And, you know, all of the
- 16:11inspiration that we might hear about next week.
- 16:15But yeah, it was really interesting to me where, like,
- 16:18we can't fully believe certain statements because either we
- 16:22don't want them to be true, we can't fathom them to be true.
- 16:26What would those truths mean? Maybe not only for us but for
- 16:29our loved ones or for our church.
- 16:31Sure. And would that paint them or us
- 16:34in a picture we don't want to see them as?
- 16:36I mean, there's just so many layers going on in these
- 16:40chapters that I think I just provided Scott a good series
- 16:46coming up. You know, you said most pastors
- 16:50want to avoid certain sections. Yeah, but that's not our pastor,
- 16:53Scott. No, no, no.
- 16:55Yeah. It's a great example of what a
- 17:00older missionary mentor while we were in Uganda would call
- 17:05stinkin thinking. Stinkin thinking I.
- 17:10Think that's a Saint Augustine quote.
- 17:12Yeah, yeah, yeah. Probably one of those church
- 17:14fathers, but yeah. And just that idea that you you
- 17:18really got into there towards the end of the sermon, that
- 17:22where our mind is is where everything else, our actions are
- 17:28going to flow out of that, you know, the things we think about
- 17:33are going to determine the things we do, right?
- 17:37And so I think that makes it all the more important when later on
- 17:42in Romans, Paul says chapter 12, don't be conformed to the
- 17:48patterns of this world, which is what he's talking about there,
- 17:52right in Romans 7. All these things that we do
- 17:55because we're part of fallen humanity in the world is don't
- 18:00be conformed to the patterns of this world, but be transformed
- 18:03by doing more good things. No, no studying more good books.
- 18:11No, no. Loving people better No, no,
- 18:17this is by the renewing of your mind.
- 18:21I appreciate how you you brought that in without needing to
- 18:26necessarily go to Romans 12 and where Paul's kind of climaxing
- 18:30the the book. But yeah, the idea that it's our
- 18:35minds and something you could argue mind, heart, you know,
- 18:39there's a pretty close connection there.
- 18:42But wherever you think, we, we actually think about things and
- 18:49dwell on things and reflect on things.
- 18:52That's where it's at. That's that's what has to change
- 18:55because it's like Jesus says about our speech, it's out of
- 19:00the overflow of our hearts that our mouth speaks.
- 19:04Yeah, my mom used to hold that against me, not hold that
- 19:07against me. Remind me of that scripture
- 19:09regularly when I would, out of anger, say certain things and be
- 19:13like, oh, I didn't really mean it.
- 19:15And she was like, well, out of the heart is yeah, where your
- 19:19words come from. Yep.
- 19:21I've definitely pulled that out on my boys couple times for
- 19:25sure. But it's true, right?
- 19:27It's we we want to think that somehow what's internal to us,
- 19:36as long as we don't act on it, somehow doesn't count.
- 19:40And that there's there's this divide between what we do and
- 19:48what we think about. As long as we don't do
- 19:51something, then we're off the hook.
- 19:54Yeah. Which is somehow, and I think if
- 19:58you in the context of Romans 6 through 8, you could say like,
- 20:01that's what the law said, right? As long as you don't do it,
- 20:04you're good. And that's where the law was
- 20:07never going to be enough to make us holy, as God is holy.
- 20:13Yeah, and that's the thing, I didn't even like hardware in on
- 20:16it more than I that I could have.
- 20:20But like the way 7 in that section talks about the law
- 20:25compared to how and and like I quoted verses, you know, that
- 20:30has the contradiction, but compared to how the law is
- 20:32talked about all around it. I don't know how to explain it,
- 20:35but it's it's very much it's given way more power and credit
- 20:39in the that chapter of seven. Then all these new things God is
- 20:46revealing through Paul in chapters 6 and 8, specifically
- 20:52in regards to how believers relate to the law.
- 20:56Now post Jesus and PUT. Sure yeah, I'll see if it picks
- 21:03up. Tick, tick, ticking me.
- 21:06But Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount takes all that the law was
- 21:12doing and its focus on the outward behavior.
- 21:17And he says it doesn't actually go far enough, right?
- 21:21And, and so all through the Sermon on the Mount there and in
- 21:24Matthew chapter 5-6, that area, he's saying, you heard it said
- 21:31from Moses that if this, then you're a Sinner.
- 21:36But I'm telling you that if it's in your heart, right?
- 21:41If it's in your heart, then you're just as guilty.
- 21:45So if you have hatred in your heart, it's just the same as if
- 21:48you murdered somebody. And so I think it's really
- 21:51helpful to us that you got to the point of forcing us to think
- 21:58about what it is we're thinking about.
- 22:01Yeah. Right.
- 22:02And so any recommendations or other passages of Scripture or
- 22:10anything that have been helpful to you as you have in your own
- 22:17life had to work through allowing your mind to be
- 22:22transformed. Oh gosh, I don't want to edit a
- 22:28podcast this morning, Scott. Whatever yet. 28.
- 22:34Resource wise I would say outside of scripture that points
- 22:40to scripture call to be holy mentioned earlier.
- 22:48Which we can throw that in the show notes.
- 22:49Yeah, I'm going to throw all these in the show notes.
- 22:51Brainwashed, Manny Rango and Crazy Love Francis Chan.
- 22:58For this specific area. I would say those three were
- 23:04probably the most impactful books, maybe the only books I
- 23:07read related to. That's why, because you guys
- 23:11don't read much. But those, those 3 and, and I've
- 23:17had some others that like touch on it, but these are like solid
- 23:21all the way through. I will say that crazy love is
- 23:25probably the most approachable. And that's more of just wrapping
- 23:29our minds around God's love for us and how we respond to it and
- 23:35that. So if you're dwelling on it or
- 23:36reading that book for that long, you know, it'll, it'll lead to
- 23:39things. And then brainwash is more of a
- 23:43getting out of the mind of Adam and into the mind of Christ and
- 23:48giving more next steps that and then called to be holy is more
- 23:54of like a overarching look, beginning of Bible to end of
- 23:59Bible of how holy God is and how us as his people are called from
- 24:05the beginning to the end to be a holy reflection of him.
- 24:10So I would say those are like the levels, maybe as you're
- 24:14entering into this, if you'd like to enter into this or feel
- 24:17like you're already in a certain place within that tier.
- 24:19Experiences and slash practices that have gotten me there is the
- 24:27more you trust God, the more you'll trust God.
- 24:32I don't, I don't know a more refined way to say it, but like,
- 24:37yeah, just trusting God. I need to expand because it's,
- 24:40it's too vague to articulate all that it entails.
- 24:45But for me it's, it's in everything like name any action
- 24:49or decision that you make in the daily or in life.
- 24:54Are you relying on God for that, asking for direction with it?
- 25:01Are you trusting him no matter how it turns out?
- 25:04Like the more you trust him with every aspect of your life, he
- 25:10proves himself trustworthy and it makes it easier for you to
- 25:13trust him in the future. And the more you trust him, he
- 25:17shows himself. Then you're love.
- 25:20Like it's just adds an intimacy and a stronger connection within
- 25:26the relationship that helps you with the next thing and the next
- 25:32thing and the next thing. And so I, I wish I had more like
- 25:37I can give, I guess examples in my life of like moving to
- 25:42Columbia for a few months to help with compassion
- 25:44International. That was one of the biggest
- 25:47shifts because I was trusting God with my all day, every day
- 25:53for three months of like, I don't know what this is going to
- 25:56look like. I don't know if I'm going to
- 25:58interact with what I'm going to be doing day-to-day at this
- 26:01thing. It was just being faithful to
- 26:03what God had formula. He would provide physical needs,
- 26:05social needs, emotional needs, spiritual needs, like all of
- 26:08these things. And so every day it was just
- 26:12being faithful. And after doing that for so many
- 26:17months in a row, why would you want to do anything else?
- 26:20And afterwards, like you, you realize how the blessings that
- 26:25he not only provides you, but also how He's able to bless
- 26:29other people through your faithfulness.
- 26:31I was like, oh, this is so much more important than the goals
- 26:34that I had prior of certain destinations to go to or things
- 26:39to acquire in this world or whatever it may be.
- 26:43And so I don't necessarily know, right, you can't just plunge and
- 26:49leave your current life and standings and sure jump into
- 26:52something that that dramatic after listening to a podcast.
- 26:57But if you do, I'm so excited for you.
- 26:59But I think it's. And you didn't, right?
- 27:01You didn't just wake up one day and say I'm going to go to
- 27:05Colombia for the next three months.
- 27:07It took two days. Yeah, yeah.
- 27:09No, it was a maybe a little over a year discerning process and
- 27:16after hearing from God and that. And so I think for us here and
- 27:22now, it's literally going through your list of life and
- 27:29your priorities, your desires, all of these things and like
- 27:33checking in with God, even if it's something so minuscule that
- 27:36you're like, God doesn't care about that part of my life.
- 27:39He does, right? Heart, mind, soul, strength,
- 27:43every single part of who you are, what you have, what you do,
- 27:47He wants to be a part of it and he knows best for each and every
- 27:50one of those areas. You may be on the right track
- 27:53and he may not in a loud voice say yes, stick with this amount
- 27:57of caffeine coffee for the morning, like to those degrees.
- 28:01But if you yearn after his will for your life in every area, he
- 28:07will make himself known. And it's it's doing this with a
- 28:11true honest desire for it. Because why would he tell you
- 28:16what he already knows you're not going to go through with?
- 28:19Right. Right.
- 28:21So it's like, well, I didn't make it clear.
- 28:23He's like, well, he knows your heart.
- 28:24He knows it doesn't matter if he shouted it from the heavens.
- 28:27You're not going to give up coffee forever and always.
- 28:29Not that everyone has to, but like, right, a lot of people
- 28:31struggle with coffee from trying to give a yeah common example of
- 28:35something that sure, most people don't, but even.
- 28:38Just what we do with our discretionary time, right?
- 28:40Like should I sit down and watch this entire sports game or TV
- 28:45season or horror movie or whatever?
- 28:51It's about those little check insurance, just like in a
- 28:56relationship, right? Because that's what it is.
- 28:59But in a relationship with another human, like, we build
- 29:02trust through the small interactions, and how we respond
- 29:07to someone determines, you know, in those little bids for
- 29:11attention that happen. Yeah, you.
- 29:13Know when you say hey do you know blah blah blah and you're
- 29:16like, no, and I don't really care, that's going to cut off
- 29:19part of that relationship, right?
- 29:21It's going to shut it down. But if you engage, if you get
- 29:23curious, if you keep asking, then the trust grows.
- 29:27And it's the same with our. Relationship on the specifics
- 29:32while also trusting and the broad that he's called us to as
- 29:37his people in Scripture. Yeah and so we have the
- 29:39foundation and you know, example that comes up with like kids and
- 29:44and should be more. It's like, OK, we're called to
- 29:47dress modestly. That's objective what modesty
- 29:50is. So going to God personally and
- 29:52asking, you know, how does this look in my life?
- 29:55So like, there's the broad and then there's the specific for
- 29:58the individual and going to God, desiring what he wants for us.
- 30:04But sometimes we go into scripture and we see, for
- 30:08example, we, this is going to sound horrible, but I hope my
- 30:12ultimate point will make it not sound as horrible.
- 30:16Like take care of widows and orphans, right?
- 30:19So God calls us to do so in Scripture and, and care for the
- 30:23least of these and so forth, so on.
- 30:25So if I, you know, open my house, put on a sign, all widows
- 30:29and orphans welcome here all the time, anytime, whatever.
- 30:32And like this is just my thing based off of this one scripture.
- 30:36I do this forever and always. I never talk to God to get about
- 30:39it. I never, you know, all this kind
- 30:41of stuff. I just went all in on this thing
- 30:44that we are called to do. It's thinking on like
- 30:48relationally, if you know, Rebecca's favorite movie is
- 30:52Pride and Prejudice, like, oh, I know that you love Pride and
- 30:56Prejudice. You love reading the book, You
- 30:58love watching the movie. You know, here or now, anytime
- 31:02we ever watch TV, we're going to be watching Pride and Prejudice
- 31:05because I know how much you love Pride and Prejudice and not give
- 31:10her a voice and to say not ever reconsider.
- 31:13At some point, maybe we should stop.
- 31:15You know, it's been three years of only watching Pride and
- 31:18Prejudice. You want to watch something
- 31:21else, Rebecca, like never considering that something else.
- 31:25And so it's also, I think as we see Paul and and them as I
- 31:30talked a couple weeks ago of like desiring going out because
- 31:35they knew that they were to share the gospel.
- 31:37That's what God wanted all of his believers to go and do.
- 31:40And as they're going out to do what God wanted, the Spirit
- 31:43steers them away, not from sharing the gospel, right, but
- 31:47doing it at that specific place at that specific time and moving
- 31:52on and moving on. Because trusting God that with
- 31:55the time He's given us that it would be most fruitful for the
- 31:59Kingdom where he sends us at that time.
- 32:02And I think that needs to be the desire in our heart, not just,
- 32:05oh, I feel most comfortable with housing and feeding widows and
- 32:11orphans. And God likes that.
- 32:13So that's what I'm going to do because that's what I'm most
- 32:14comfortable with. What if God calls you to
- 32:16preaching and you're like, I don't like talking to five
- 32:19people in a room, let alone to a room of 50 or more, whatever it
- 32:24may be. And yet God knows not
- 32:27necessarily what you can do on your own power, but with the
- 32:31power of the Holy Spirit in you, what he's able to do in that
- 32:34time. And so that's, I think the mind
- 32:37shift that's important, the thinking of the Holy Spirit,
- 32:40thinking on the Father, on his love, what he desires for us,
- 32:43and allowing him to lead us, right.
- 32:46It's in the NIV. The NLT version was controlled
- 32:49by the Holy Spirit. We're relinquishing that control
- 32:53over to Him. And I think those are the things
- 32:57that the more you relinquish control, the more you think
- 33:00about what God desires and you strive again to love him with
- 33:04all your heart, mind, soul and strength.
- 33:06Love your neighbor as yourself. He will guide you.
- 33:11We just don't want to do that. Yeah, like, and I'm not saying
- 33:15we use them like we extremely immature Christians that, you
- 33:19know, whatever it may be, but like just down to our core,
- 33:24releasing control completely and trying to focus on something
- 33:30that isn't ourselves, right? We're the main character of our
- 33:33each of our lives is going against the grain.
- 33:36That's why it's the narrow path. Yeah.
- 33:39So here's the invitation for you today as you listen to this
- 33:43podcast. You know, unless you've been,
- 33:46you know, sitting in your car hoping to finish this before you
- 33:50rush into your next thing, as I know you do, if you've got the
- 33:54time, take two minutes, 3 minutes, 5 minutes and just ask
- 34:00God about the rest of your day and, and what he's saying and to
- 34:05give you the his eyes to see the situations around you and, and
- 34:11to ask him how he might want to use you today.
- 34:19Well, that's our conversation for today, but that doesn't mean
- 34:22the conversation is over. We'd love to hear your thoughts
- 34:25on these topics as well. To ask a question about anything
- 34:28we've discussed in this episode or to join the conversation, you
- 34:31can head over to fumccollingswood.org/podcast.
- 34:37Thanks for being part of this conversation.
