- 0:17Eric Rutin: All right, here we are and we have a wonderful, lovely guest today.
- 0:26Eric Rutin: Amanda Khan, how are you doing today?
- 0:30Amanda Khan: I'm doing super fantastic.
- 0:31Amanda Khan: How about you, Eric?
- 0:33Eric Rutin: I am doing well.
- 0:34Eric Rutin: Now are you in Vancouver right now.
- 0:37Amanda Khan: I am in Vancouver and the sun is blazing, so it's a gorgeous day here.
- 0:42Eric Rutin: I was about to ask because I'm down here in Arizona and we're pushing 90 degrees, which is not really Thanksgiving weather.
- 0:48Eric Rutin: I don't know if it's cooled off up there for you at all yet.
- 0:52Amanda Khan: It has definitely cooled off, but that sunshine is still coming through.
- 0:58Eric Rutin: All right, speaking of which, we're talking Arizona, we're talking a little Vancouver here.
- 1:02Eric Rutin: Your IMDB, which you know, of course that has to be true if it's on the internet, right, but it says you've lived all around the world.
- 1:09Eric Rutin: So, of all these places you've lived, like what are a couple of them?
- 1:13Eric Rutin: And then, what is the favorite place where you think you've ever?
- 1:17Eric Rutin: Well, you should not think you know where's the favorite place you ever lived.
- 1:21Amanda Khan: Okay, well, a couple.
- 1:22Amanda Khan: So I'll give you a couple of examples.
- 1:25Amanda Khan: I was living in Kathmandu for a year and a half and after Kathmandu I moved over to Africa, lived in Malawi and then ended up settling in Mauritius for 18 years.
- 1:38Amanda Khan: And, yes, a tropical island off the coast of Africa, very tiny on the map.
- 1:45Amanda Khan: You actually usually there's like a magnifying glass that zooms it out so you can see that it actually exists.
- 1:50Amanda Khan: But that is my favorite place.
- 1:54Eric Rutin: Wow, and so what, what, what, how do you prompted you to be this world traveler?
- 1:58Amanda Khan: Well, initially I was married and my husband at the time was in travel and tourism, so he worked as an expatriate, which afforded us a lifestyle of a jet setter, and we had this agreement when we got together that we were going to live where everyone else vacationed.
- 2:15Amanda Khan: And he's yeah, oh, it was perfect.
- 2:18Amanda Khan: He was from the UK and I'm from Toronto, and neither of us wanted to raise our kids in Toronto or the UK If we could find somewhere tropical and sunny.
- 2:29Amanda Khan: And and that's what we did.
- 2:32Eric Rutin: Right.
- 2:32Eric Rutin: So most of the people listen to our podcast, but we do have some YouTube there as well.
- 2:37Eric Rutin: And as I'm looking, I just realized I'm looking in your background and you've got your Christmas tree going there.
- 2:42Eric Rutin: Now is this a real background or are we AI background?
- 2:44Amanda Khan: This is my background.
- 2:46Eric Rutin: Oh, beautiful house.
- 2:47Eric Rutin: So you, I guess you pull out the Christmas decorations.
- 2:51Eric Rutin: Well, you don't.
- 2:52Eric Rutin: You're Canadian, your Thanksgiving was ages ago, so you can do it.
- 2:57Amanda Khan: Yeah, I usually wait till Halloween's over and then, you know, I start heading to the Christmas cabinet.
- 3:03Eric Rutin: Respect the goblins Now.
- 3:05Eric Rutin: Do you ever get down to Buenos Aires?
- 3:09Amanda Khan: Yes, I did.
- 3:10Amanda Khan: I actually shot a commercial there.
- 3:12Eric Rutin: All right.
- 3:13Eric Rutin: So I did a.
- 3:14Eric Rutin: I had a trip where I went South America and did Santiago and Buenos Aires and Buenos Aires I just fell in love with.
- 3:20Eric Rutin: I loved it down there.
- 3:21Amanda Khan: So Well, I flew out to shoot an M&M's commercial there.
- 3:25Amanda Khan: Funny enough, and a candy M&M's.
- 3:28Amanda Khan: Yes exactly January of 20, was the 2023.
- 3:34Eric Rutin: We are at M&M or.
- 3:36Amanda Khan: I was stood next to a yellow M&M.
- 3:38Amanda Khan: But it was so funny because we got to Argentina and we were there for six days.
- 3:44Amanda Khan: Five days were off and one day I was on set and for the five days I was taking tango lessons every day.
- 3:52Amanda Khan: It was the perfect.
- 3:54Eric Rutin: Whoa, I guess that's the right place to go for tango lessons.
- 3:57Amanda Khan: Yes, I made some good friends there and, yeah, the tango was incredible.
- 4:01Eric Rutin: And way to go and good job, agent negotiating five days off, one day working down there, that's fantastic.
- 4:08Amanda Khan: It's the other way around, right?
- 4:10Eric Rutin: Right, all right.
- 4:11Eric Rutin: Well, speaking of your agent, so your agent, I'm assuming, helped you get this Jessamine role on Hallmark for the curious caters.
- 4:22Eric Rutin: Tell me a little bit about when.
- 4:24Eric Rutin: When you got the call and it's like, okay, here's the character.
- 4:26Eric Rutin: Like how did they describe the character so, like the Jessamine we see, is that like on your little note saying this is how she, she's just crazy off, you know crazy one, or is there something that you fabricated and brought to life?
- 4:41Amanda Khan: You know it's really funny.
- 4:42Amanda Khan: I had a feeling you might ask me that, so I actually went back into the original audition and screenshot of the breakdown and one line that stood out to me was both Marla and Goldie find Jessamine to be a punchable specimen of humanity.
- 5:01Eric Rutin: Who writes that?
- 5:02Eric Rutin: That's absolutely hilarious.
- 5:04Amanda Khan: I don't know.
- 5:04Amanda Khan: But you know they have the typical thing about how she looks and how she presents.
- 5:08Amanda Khan: But it was obvious that she was a bit of a pot stirrer from from the rest of it.
- 5:14Eric Rutin: And so you're sitting going.
- 5:15Eric Rutin: Hmm, how can I be punchable?
- 5:17Amanda Khan: Yes, so that's just that.
- 5:20Amanda Khan: Just spoke fun to me.
- 5:23Eric Rutin: All right.
- 5:23Eric Rutin: Well, you obviously nailed it because you, you got the role, so all right.
- 5:27Eric Rutin: So, speaking of auditioning, what is the worst thing about auditioning?
- 5:32Eric Rutin: Obviously there's being like, oh, you didn't get the role or the thing like that, but like a little bit more, behind the sceney thing of auditioning, what's that world like?
- 5:43Amanda Khan: Well, you know something you're speaking to somebody who absolutely loves the audition process.
- 5:48Amanda Khan: I always see it as an opportunity to be seen and to create and to present.
- 5:56Amanda Khan: I'd have to say my preference between auditioning in studio and at home is definitely in studio because when you're at home and you put up a self tape, you don't have a redirect and you know you don't really get a vibe for whoever it is you're reading for, and so you're sort of out there trying to make a choice and hoping that it's the right one, whereas when you're in the room you get a, you can have a little quick conversation and then whatever prep you've done you at the last minute I feel like you can just steer it to what it is they're looking for.
- 6:36Eric Rutin: So for us who are not accomplished actors such as yourself, is it what we see in like a movie where it's a whole bunch of you just sitting in the room together, staring at each other, going All right, amanda, you're next and you're like all right, see you, jc, I'm going on in and you know, in a room with a line of people there.
- 6:57Amanda Khan: It's actually really lovely in Vancouver because it's such a small community in terms of the actors in Vancouver and we all know each other and it's almost like we text each other when we get certain auditions, like, oh, did you get this, did you get that?
- 7:10Amanda Khan: Yeah, do you mind?
- 7:11Amanda Khan: I know we're both auditioning for it, but can you read for me?
- 7:14Amanda Khan: Sure, no problem.
- 7:15Amanda Khan: Or we'll come out of the room and someone will say, hey, when you go in, they actually would prefer that you do it in this sort of vein, which I feel is really nice, because at the end of the day it's I don't think competition is a really big thing.
- 7:32Amanda Khan: You can't get in your head about that because nobody knows what they're looking for.
- 7:36Amanda Khan: So you go in, you do your best.
- 7:38Amanda Khan: I feel like in the waiting room we sort of just were polite to each other, we chat to each other, and then we go in there, do our job and then let it go when you leave the audition room.
- 7:51Eric Rutin: Okay, well, that's not that fun.
- 7:52Eric Rutin: Then it'd be better that if you got like the little thing and then you saw like someone else is going for the role, so you invite him over for dinner and you would purposely serve him under cooked chicken or something like that, so you get the role, and I don't want this like oh, I'm good luck.
- 8:08Eric Rutin: Here's a tip for you.
- 8:09Amanda Khan: You should be serving them.
- 8:10Eric Rutin: Some, like you know, botulism or something, so they know they can't do their.
- 8:15Amanda Khan: Know what if I get desperate.
- 8:17Amanda Khan: I will definitely consider that option.
- 8:20Eric Rutin: I'll send you some recipes of like how to food poison your Okay.
- 8:24Eric Rutin: Well, haven't lived in some of the countries I've lived in.
- 8:27Amanda Khan: I've had my fair share of.
- 8:28Amanda Khan: I imagine you do have some interesting.
- 8:33Eric Rutin: Now I just totally off my question aspect.
- 8:36Eric Rutin: So do you have this incredibly global like palette for what you like so you're not going to in and out burger every day?
- 8:46Eric Rutin: You kind of have Listen.
- 8:49Amanda Khan: I love me in and out burger.
- 8:51Amanda Khan: I love all kinds of food as long as it tastes good.
- 8:55Amanda Khan: I really don't have a preference.
- 8:58Eric Rutin: All right.
- 8:58Eric Rutin: So you do eat some interesting things though, yes, okay, all right.
- 9:05Eric Rutin: So let's get back a little bit to this IMDB, which says you are trained in method acting, which once again I'll just go to.
- 9:11Eric Rutin: You know what I know about it, which is very little, and what I've just seen in movies and stuff like that, but are you just walking around like the set, acting like Jessamine the whole time?
- 9:21Eric Rutin: Or you know even better yet are you just spending three weeks of that whole shoot in your entire life going to the grocery store as Jessamine?
- 9:28Eric Rutin: Everyone?
- 9:28Eric Rutin: You know just what are you.
- 9:30Eric Rutin: You're punchable, whatever being punchable, and everything like that.
- 9:34Amanda Khan: Do you know what I feel like if I ever do any method stuff?
- 9:37Amanda Khan: It's in my kitchen with my, with my son, and he just looks at me like mom, are you, are you talking to me or are you, are you acting right now?
- 9:46Amanda Khan: It's, it's hilarious.
- 9:47Amanda Khan: I actually toy with a lot of different methods in terms of preparation.
- 9:54Amanda Khan: So I wouldn't say that I'm a method actor, but I do see the value in different techniques and so, depending on the role, I may adopt one more than the other.
- 10:06Amanda Khan: But yeah, I don't.
- 10:08Amanda Khan: I don't know if I went to the supermarket and pulled a, a hissy fit at the cashier.
- 10:15Eric Rutin: Jessamine would be awesome going through the line you don't have my kombucha today.
- 10:19Eric Rutin: Exactly All right.
- 10:22Eric Rutin: All right, so we're going to go through a little speed round of some questions.
- 10:27Eric Rutin: So not too much thinking, but just sort of what pops in your head.
- 10:31Amanda Khan: One of them is a little tougher, but all right.
- 10:34Eric Rutin: So first one is what is your opinion of pineapple on pizza?
- 10:39Eric Rutin: Is it reserved only for psychos or is it delicious?
- 10:42Eric Rutin: It's not my go to, but I feel like it's one of those.
- 10:50Amanda Khan: I feel like it's one of those things where, when you do try it, like, say, you're at a party and there's no other pizza left and it's the only one there, so you take a bite and you think you know what, it's not that bad.
- 11:03Eric Rutin: Or you say, okay, it's, this is my sign, it's time to leave.
- 11:05Eric Rutin: That's true.
- 11:07Eric Rutin: I bet you can guess what my answer to that question is yeah.
- 11:13Eric Rutin: I love me some pizza, and anyone who's sticking pineapple on it, I don't know.
- 11:17Eric Rutin: Yeah, all right, so we talked about this a little before we got on, but actually I guess no, we talked about when we saw your tree.
- 11:24Eric Rutin: So you are Canadian, so you already had your Thanksgiving, so you don't do the American Thanksgiving that's this week, right?
- 11:31Amanda Khan: No.
- 11:32Eric Rutin: Okay so.
- 11:34Amanda Khan: But I did take a trip down to Trader Joe's last week Because it's just across the border and I did a lot of shopping there because they had so many goodies out for Thanksgiving.
- 11:45Eric Rutin: So what is your now do you?
- 11:47Eric Rutin: Here's the strange thing, too, is I actually grew up in Canada.
- 11:51Eric Rutin: I moved.
- 11:51Eric Rutin: I was in Windsor when I was little and then, when I was in third grade, I moved across the border back to Michigan, and I don't remember Thanksgiving as a kid, so but do you do the same?
- 12:06Eric Rutin: The same turkey and green bean castrules and yams all that same thing.
- 12:12Amanda Khan: I absolutely adore Martha Stewart, so I do the, I do the Martha Stewart Thanksgiving.
- 12:21Amanda Khan: You name it, the cornbread, everything.
- 12:25Eric Rutin: Yeah, so what's your favorite then?
- 12:27Eric Rutin: Dish of Thanksgiving.
- 12:28Eric Rutin: Oh, a lot to choose from.
- 12:31Amanda Khan: There are.
- 12:32Amanda Khan: For me it's the stuffing.
- 12:33Eric Rutin: All right.
- 12:34Amanda Khan: Yeah.
- 12:36Eric Rutin: How do you put the stuffing in the in the turkey when you cook?
- 12:39Amanda Khan: Yes.
- 12:40Eric Rutin: Once again all right.
- 12:40Eric Rutin: Good answer or you're answering all the questions right so far, so all right, perfect, all right.
- 12:45Eric Rutin: So now let's get to it.
- 12:46Eric Rutin: Do you, do you watch Hallmark movies as well?
- 12:49Eric Rutin: Are they kind of your thing?
- 12:51Eric Rutin: Or I'm an actor, I act on them, but not really my kind of thing.
- 12:55Amanda Khan: You know what?
- 12:55Amanda Khan: I don't mind Hallmark movies, but because I lived out of Canada for about 23 years, I only came back to Vancouver in 2020.
- 13:03Amanda Khan: So it's been sort of catching up on, yeah, on sort of what's on TV and coming back to wow, there's so much in the Hallmark world.
- 13:13Amanda Khan: Like when I was growing up, hallmark was very specific and you know, now you've got the mysteries and and and all the rest of it and it's like whoa, it's like Hallmark's it's own universe, if you will.
- 13:24Amanda Khan: So I'm watching more Hallmark now because I am auditioning for a lot of Hallmark and I've done some Hallmark Christmas stuff this year as well too.
- 13:34Amanda Khan: So, yeah, I'm getting into it and I'm finding that it's.
- 13:39Amanda Khan: It's not the same as what I, what I remember from growing up.
- 13:43Eric Rutin: All right, so have you, have you?
- 13:45Eric Rutin: So you've been watching the countdown to Christmas so far.
- 13:48Eric Rutin: No I haven't, so you're watching the older.
- 13:52Amanda Khan: Okay, I'm watching, I'm sort of trying.
- 13:55Amanda Khan: I'm trying to watch the things that are that are coming out, that are, you know, linked to what I'm doing or what I've done.
- 14:02Amanda Khan: Like Nikki's just been what she had her when was it?
- 14:05Amanda Khan: On the 16th of November, right, but in Canada?
- 14:11Eric Rutin: I just watched it this morning.
- 14:13Amanda Khan: Oh, did you watch it?
- 14:14Eric Rutin: Yeah, and the woman I'm going to be doing my little review on it.
- 14:19Eric Rutin: But she is just incredibly talented actor.
- 14:24Eric Rutin: She just is so, so good.
- 14:26Eric Rutin: I didn't.
- 14:27Eric Rutin: I'll be honest, I found the movie not really.
- 14:29Eric Rutin: My thing was kind of just I don't want to say boring, that sounds harsh, it just it wasn't there.
- 14:34Eric Rutin: But the acting in the movie was just like because the Hallmark kind of gets, you'll see, like all the Tik Toks or whatever that makes fun of Hallmark movies and stuff like that.
- 14:42Eric Rutin: If you just watch Nikki act you're like no, there, there, that's, there's nothing cheesy or what whatever about her.
- 14:50Eric Rutin: She just that one was talented.
- 14:53Amanda Khan: Nikki is solid and she's a solid person both on and off camera.
- 14:57Amanda Khan: I absolutely love her.
- 14:59Eric Rutin: No, she can tell the truth.
- 15:00Eric Rutin: She's really evil.
- 15:01Amanda Khan: Oh, no, no, I do I do Sorry no no no Nikki from this girl.
- 15:07Eric Rutin: Well, it's interesting.
- 15:07Eric Rutin: We've talked to enough of the Hallmark people now that number one A, that's the fact that you all talk to us, is one thing.
- 15:16Eric Rutin: That's just wonderful.
- 15:17Eric Rutin: But you know, even when we have our conversations off camera or just you know, in DMing and stuff like that, it is just such a wonderfully nice universe of actors that it's.
- 15:29Eric Rutin: There's no wonder why Hallmark, I think.
- 15:32Eric Rutin: I think that's a big reason of why it's so popular, along with the stories.
- 15:35Eric Rutin: But just the people who are in them, you can tell, are just wonderful people.
- 15:40Amanda Khan: Yeah, and I feel like that extends to also, you know, people who are not on camera.
- 15:45Amanda Khan: I'm in the last film I had one of the executives from Hallmark come up and introduce herself to me and she was so lovely and she was just telling me how happy she was with my work.
- 15:56Amanda Khan: She was asking me if I'm okay and you know, because some of the scenes we did in the barn where you know, I was tied up with rope and I was in the hay and all the rest of it and just so lovely and accommodating and I just, whenever I go to a Hallmark set, I just feel that energy sort of from everybody and it's wonderful.
- 16:16Eric Rutin: I'm doing a terrible job with my rapid questions were supposed to be like okay, quickly now.
- 16:21Eric Rutin: Have you ever stolen anything from one of the?
- 16:26Eric Rutin: Or maybe not stolen?
- 16:27Eric Rutin: Have you ever just ended up mysteriously with something at your home from one of the sets?
- 16:32Eric Rutin: That's just awesome.
- 16:33Amanda Khan: Yes, a badge.
- 16:36Eric Rutin: A bag like a police badge kind of thing Like it was from.
- 16:40Amanda Khan: so help me, Todd, because I was a doctor and they actually had my photo on it and I didn't ask the props master if it was okay to walk away with it.
- 16:49Amanda Khan: But I thought, well, what are they going to do with it?
- 16:51Amanda Khan: So I was like taking up framing the form and I was like, okay, I think it's come on with me.
- 16:55Eric Rutin: Now what you need to do is put some scrubs on where like when you go get coffee or something like that and people were like I'm in a hurry, oh my gosh.
- 17:02Eric Rutin: And they'll think you're like at the ER or something like that, and they'll just part the ways and you can cut through all the lines.
- 17:08Amanda Khan: Oh my gosh, I could do that.
- 17:09Amanda Khan: And then what happens if somebody like faints and then they love them all.
- 17:12Eric Rutin: Well then you're like oh, I got to get my coffee and get out of here, I don't know.
- 17:18Eric Rutin: Let me just hope that doesn't happen.
- 17:20Amanda Khan: Yeah.
- 17:22Eric Rutin: Okay, all right.
- 17:23Eric Rutin: So would you rather be in a romcom or a mystery drama type movie?
- 17:32Amanda Khan: Romcom all the way.
- 17:34Eric Rutin: Really Okay.
- 17:34Eric Rutin: Yeah, Nice.
- 17:36Eric Rutin: So for the for the more.
- 17:37Eric Rutin: Are you more in the ROM or more in the calm?
- 17:40Amanda Khan: Oh, oh, oh.
- 17:43Amanda Khan: That's a very good question, I think more in the ROM, with sprinkles of calm.
- 17:49Eric Rutin: Okay, because you definitely brought the calm to curious caterer.
- 17:54Eric Rutin: Thank you, no problem, that's one of the things that we love about it is why it does have all the seriousness of it, but it just has a lot of good humor in that series.
- 18:06Eric Rutin: So we really like that, right.
- 18:08Eric Rutin: So this one actually does require a little bit of thinking, as much as the pizza, but all right.
- 18:14Eric Rutin: So think of any like iconic TV show or movie, one of the you know, one of the greats that are out there, and they're going to do a reboot and you're going to be cast in it.
- 18:24Eric Rutin: What would that be and what role would you want?
- 18:30Amanda Khan: Oh, my goodness, it's already come to my head and it's not the one that I thought it would be.
- 18:34Amanda Khan: I would love to be Scarlett O'Hara and Gone with the Wind, all right.
- 18:42Eric Rutin: Nice, nice.
- 18:44Eric Rutin: I asked Jason that she couldn't come up with anything, so we had to like, come back to it like five years later.
- 18:50Eric Rutin: So, all right, bringing back Gone with the Wind.
- 18:54Eric Rutin: Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.
- 18:56Amanda Khan: Fiddledy, that is awesome.
- 18:58Eric Rutin: That is awesome.
- 18:59Eric Rutin: Okay, all right, all right.
- 19:02Eric Rutin: So now the last one here is you have Andrew Walker, you have Nikki Loesch, you have JC and you have Lachlan Monroe.
- 19:10Eric Rutin: Oh, who are you going to be best friends with?
- 19:13Eric Rutin: Who are you going to be stranded in an island with?
- 19:16Eric Rutin: Who are you going to get arrested with and who are you murdering?
- 19:22Amanda Khan: Murdering.
- 19:23Amanda Khan: Do I have to?
- 19:23Amanda Khan: You got to kill one of them, oh my goodness, okay.
- 19:26Eric Rutin: You can kill them with kindness.
- 19:27Eric Rutin: I don't care how you kill them, okay.
- 19:28Amanda Khan: There we go, okay, so I feel like I get arrested with Lachlan, really.
- 19:34Amanda Khan: Yeah, I feel like Lachlan would have the chops to charm the cops and get us out of whatever sticky situation we're in.
- 19:43Amanda Khan: Who would I be?
- 19:44Amanda Khan: Stranded on a desert island with Nikki Hands down because she's a caterer, so you know, count on her to come up with something for us to eat for dinner.
- 19:57Amanda Khan: Besties would be JC or Andrew and Andrew.
- 20:03Amanda Khan: Yeah, but kill him with kindness.
- 20:05Eric Rutin: Well, he's your ex right.
- 20:06Eric Rutin: Yes.
- 20:08Amanda Khan: Exactly.
- 20:08Eric Rutin: Yeah, you know, we all thought he killed you, and so the twist is you actually kill him.
- 20:16Eric Rutin: I love it.
- 20:17Eric Rutin: Next episode, detective Tom dead.
- 20:20Eric Rutin: All right, we got our story.
- 20:24Amanda Khan: Oh, my goodness.
- 20:24Amanda Khan: But okay.
- 20:25Amanda Khan: Besides that, Andrew is actually super lovely and I'm so glad that I got to be working with him in both segments actually, Wow, you read my question.
- 20:38Eric Rutin: So you obviously got cast for dying for chocolate.
- 20:41Eric Rutin: Now, did you know at the time you were going to be brought back for the next episode, because a lot of times the characters are only in one of them other than that core group.
- 20:50Eric Rutin: So did you know you're coming back for the third?
- 20:53Amanda Khan: Well, you know something, I got cast for grilling season.
- 20:56Eric Rutin: Right, oh, that's not it.
- 20:57Eric Rutin: That's not it.
- 20:58Eric Rutin: Grilling season.
- 20:59Amanda Khan: No, that's okay and it's so funny because I auditioned for dying for chocolate For the role of Dr Smiley.
- 21:04Amanda Khan: He actually got killed.
- 21:07Eric Rutin: And then you would have had to do the big kiss.
- 21:10Amanda Khan: Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no no right, right, right, right.
- 21:13Eric Rutin: That's.
- 21:13Eric Rutin: That's great.
- 21:14Eric Rutin: See, they're all blending together, so okay.
- 21:16Eric Rutin: So dying for chocolate was.
- 21:18Amanda Khan: Yeah, dr.
- 21:18Eric Rutin: Smiley got killed in that one To drill off the cliff.
- 21:21Amanda Khan: Yeah, so then I exactly, so I didn't book that.
- 21:23Amanda Khan: Then I booked Jessamine and I didn't know what was going to happen in number three and I was so thrilled when my agent called and she said casting wanted my avail.
- 21:35Amanda Khan: And it was so funny because I was reading the script for Fatal Vows and I didn't realize that, you know, this bride that they were talking about was me.
- 21:44Amanda Khan: And the reveals coming on the oh, I get to wear a wedding dress.
- 21:46Amanda Khan: This is exciting.
- 21:47Amanda Khan: Oh no, I'm kidnapped.
- 21:49Amanda Khan: So I'm reading, I'm reading a month, please don't kill me off and I see that Nikki and Andrew rescue me and I was like, yay, so who knows, maybe there'll be a number four.
- 22:01Eric Rutin: All right, yeah, that's.
- 22:02Eric Rutin: That's well there is.
- 22:04Eric Rutin: I hope that Jessamine's in it.
- 22:06Amanda Khan: For Jessamine, I mean exactly.
- 22:08Amanda Khan: Right.
- 22:09Eric Rutin: All right.
- 22:09Eric Rutin: Do you have any good behind the scenes?
- 22:12Eric Rutin: Now you've been in two of them Any good behind the scenes story that you can share with us?
- 22:16Eric Rutin: That the cookiness that takes place on set?
- 22:19Eric Rutin: Or, like with your character, you have to be breaking scenes all the time.
- 22:24Amanda Khan: Let me tell you.
- 22:24Amanda Khan: So the entrance to my wedding rehearsal in Fatal Vows it was scripted to be Jessamine comes in and she poses, does duck face and photographer, photographer.
- 22:38Amanda Khan: And that's the entrance.
- 22:39Amanda Khan: But then, when I got to the scene, all of a sudden, you know, I saw sort of things that I could incorporate into it.
- 22:46Amanda Khan: I said, oh, paul, paul Zillor, director.
- 22:48Amanda Khan: I said, look at the store frame.
- 22:50Amanda Khan: I said what if Jess just came out like this?
- 22:52Amanda Khan: And he's like, yeah, go for it.
- 22:54Amanda Khan: So I said okay, great.
- 22:55Amanda Khan: And then I thought, oh, this feels like a runway.
- 22:57Amanda Khan: So in another take I was like I just did a little twirl and he's like, oh, that's great.
- 23:01Amanda Khan: And then every time we kept running, rolling camera, I tried something new and at one point I decided I was going to do a little skip, like a run in a skip.
- 23:08Amanda Khan: But one of my bridesmaids behind me didn't see it coming and she got kicked.
- 23:13Amanda Khan: I apologize.
- 23:16Amanda Khan: I said I'm so sorry, I don't know where that came from, but I'm going to keep doing it and they actually used it in the film.
- 23:22Amanda Khan: So this little part where she does this little hop yeah, that was.
- 23:27Amanda Khan: That was funny.
- 23:29Eric Rutin: How much of now?
- 23:31Eric Rutin: I obviously talk along, so I know you're not 100% Jessamine here, but how much do you have Jessamine in you?
- 23:37Eric Rutin: A?
- 23:39Amanda Khan: lot.
- 23:40Eric Rutin: A lot, yeah.
- 23:41Eric Rutin: So you see, when you're out and about you're not sitting in the background corner sort of watching people.
- 23:47Eric Rutin: You have a little bit of attention and yes you don't mind that.
- 23:52Amanda Khan: Oh no, I'm very bubbly, I'm social and yeah.
- 23:57Amanda Khan: So when I when I read Jessamine, I thought oh, I love her.
- 24:01Eric Rutin: So that's how you normally enter a party like that, though the little skip and hey, listen and everything, why not?
- 24:07Eric Rutin: I love it, love it, love it, love it, love it.
- 24:10Eric Rutin: All right, so let's go All right.
- 24:15Eric Rutin: So we had gotten a little note when, when you agreed to be on here and then you, before we talked, you said you had lunch with JC and she sent us a little note saying you're an absolutely amazing, wonderful person.
- 24:27Eric Rutin: So now I don't really have the question necessarily, but did you guys like know each other before?
- 24:34Eric Rutin: Like, have you guys known each other for a while or do you just sort of meet up through this?
- 24:39Amanda Khan: Yeah, we met on set and you know I met her doing grilling season and she was lovely.
- 24:47Amanda Khan: And when we came back to do fatal vows I think that's when I don't know we just clicked and we got to know each other more.
- 24:59Amanda Khan: We had a lot of time in the green room together and on set in between takes, especially filming that opening scene with the wedding cake.
- 25:06Amanda Khan: The amount of times I apologize, I'm like I'm so sorry, guys, bridezilla, and but it was, it was hilarious and we kept in touch after and, yeah, it's just naturally evolved into this friendship.
- 25:20Amanda Khan: She actually gifted me some really cute little booties for my dog.
- 25:25Eric Rutin: Oh no, what kind of a dog.
- 25:27Amanda Khan: My dog.
- 25:27Amanda Khan: She's a Pomeranian shitsue.
- 25:29Eric Rutin: Okay, so a little tiny pup there.
- 25:31Amanda Khan: Yeah, she's gorgeous Okay.
- 25:34Eric Rutin: I said JC is one of our faves.
- 25:36Amanda Khan: So I can see why.
- 25:39Eric Rutin: Okay, so back to the movie.
- 25:40Eric Rutin: One of our main complaints of the movie you kind of, you know, referred to it before was you were kidnapped and you were stuck in the the barn there, but you had your hands like bound in front of you.
- 25:52Eric Rutin: Come on, jasmine, can't you like just pull the duct tape off and work your way out?
- 25:59Eric Rutin: You're there for a couple of days, I think.
- 26:01Eric Rutin: Just it's got to get a little more, you know, resourceful there.
- 26:05Eric Rutin: You should have escaped.
- 26:06Amanda Khan: I think Sunita must have been in the Navy in a previous life, because the knot that she tied around my wrist I just couldn't.
- 26:16Amanda Khan: I couldn't budge.
- 26:18Amanda Khan: So you know, yeah.
- 26:21Eric Rutin: I'm going to give credit to Sunita for that.
- 26:23Eric Rutin: Okay, we want, next time Jasmine is abducted, to be a little more resourceful though.
- 26:30Eric Rutin: Okay, all right, put in your little notes of escape, so if you're in the trunk, you can push the button and hop out or do whatever you want to do.
- 26:38Amanda Khan: Right, okay.
- 26:40Eric Rutin: Speaking of your adduction, you were, as you said before, also in the wedding dress and you got to.
- 26:45Eric Rutin: There are many good lines in this movie, but the best line of the entire movie was when you came out and you saw a Nikki Goldie and said wait, you're wearing a wedding dress to my wedding.
- 26:56Eric Rutin: Now, when you got to see that, like in the script, did you just fall off the couch laughing yourself.
- 27:04Amanda Khan: I laughed.
- 27:04Amanda Khan: I laughed so hard, I loved it and I couldn't wait to say that line.
- 27:09Amanda Khan: And it's so funny because when Nikki and I shot it, she went back and she was telling JC she's like, just wait, just wait till you hear him in to say that line.
- 27:20Amanda Khan: She says she was beside herself, beside herself between takes.
- 27:23Amanda Khan: And it's so funny because obviously, before that happens, I'm literally in distress and I want to be rescued.
- 27:33Amanda Khan: I don't know that I'm going to be rescued.
- 27:34Amanda Khan: So you saw this emotional work that goes into what happens as they're going to roll camera and then we get to end it off with this nice little funny button.
- 27:46Eric Rutin: I think it was the best line in the entire entire movie and you delivered it absolutely perfectly.
- 27:52Eric Rutin: Now, how many did you go through?
- 27:55Eric Rutin: And a whole bunch of different ways, or did you just sort of boom?
- 27:58Eric Rutin: This is how it is and you just nailed that one.
- 28:01Amanda Khan: Yeah, you know what?
- 28:02Amanda Khan: I don't think I really strayed too far from that, but it was.
- 28:06Amanda Khan: The only thing I may have toyed with is how long I took before I set the line, whether I looked her up and down or whether I just sort of saw it and then reacted.
- 28:14Eric Rutin: But yeah, Okay, well, like I say perfect, perfect, so I'm talking about the writing there.
- 28:21Eric Rutin: In the script you got, one of the things that was there was there were obviously different writers from growing season here.
- 28:29Eric Rutin: Did you find that Jessamine was very different in the in the two, with having the different writers, or do you think her character obviously her character had more of a role in the, in the, in the in the ladder, but just in general, do you think they kept it going forward with the same arc that you expected, or did they change her at all for you?
- 28:54Amanda Khan: Honestly, I was not even expecting Jessamine to have as much as she had.
- 28:59Amanda Khan: You know, with the kidnapping and and and everything else, I was very happy with what the writers did in both of them and I really I liked how they just stayed true to form in terms of Jessamine's character and continuing to show that the contrast between her and Nikki.
- 29:21Amanda Khan: I thought they kept her fun for both of them, so I was very happy.
- 29:28Eric Rutin: Okay, all right.
- 29:29Eric Rutin: So one of the things that we wonder about is how Jessamine who is, as we said, not a shy, not a timid personality how was she ever married to Tom?
- 29:44Eric Rutin: Like, how did that relationship ever happen?
- 29:46Eric Rutin: You got to tell us.
- 29:47Eric Rutin: I know it's made up and everything that, but give us your backstory of how the heck does Jessamine marry Detective Tom, because they are polar opposite personalities.
- 29:59Amanda Khan: Absolutely Well.
- 30:00Amanda Khan: My backstory was that Jessamine came back to town to prove to everybody that she is now the big I am coming back from San Francisco and then she had her sights set on Tom because he was the hottest guy in the town and super successful and I believe she just, she just charmed Tom.
- 30:22Amanda Khan: Like you know, elk park it's a nice place, but it's a little bit too nice, maybe, maybe too sort of steady and stable and I think you know deep down Tom's got this.
- 30:37Amanda Khan: Tom must have this sort of curiosity going on as to what does it like to be with somebody who's a little bit you know more on the wild side.
- 30:46Amanda Khan: So I think Tom just decided to dip his toe in but then got out quite quickly.
- 30:51Amanda Khan: Maybe it's because his father was a jailbird.
- 30:54Amanda Khan: He just, I don't know.
- 30:56Eric Rutin: Yeah, you met him.
- 30:56Eric Rutin: You met him at your leaving, when he was walking in to see his dad.
- 31:00Eric Rutin: So you and you and Lachlan were getting getting signed up for whatever.
- 31:07Amanda Khan: Yeah.
- 31:08Eric Rutin: So all right, all right.
- 31:11Eric Rutin: So I'm guessing based on our earlier conversation.
- 31:13Eric Rutin: My next thing was you don't have any word yet because obviously the strike and everything like that put things a little bit on hold.
- 31:19Eric Rutin: So you don't.
- 31:20Eric Rutin: You don't have word yet on the fourth one and if Jessamyn's going to be rolling in this one or not.
- 31:27Amanda Khan: Not yet Fingers are crossed.
- 31:28Amanda Khan: Yeah, yeah, definitely fingers crossed, and you know it'll be great.
- 31:34Eric Rutin: I can't see why they wouldn't, because they didn't kill me, they didn't kill you, and I'll say it's.
- 31:40Eric Rutin: It's as I said earlier, it's why we like the series.
- 31:43Eric Rutin: It just has so much humor in it.
- 31:44Eric Rutin: One of the things we really enjoyed was Goldie and Marla's relationship.
- 31:49Eric Rutin: Is it expanded from the first one to the second one and all that?
- 31:53Eric Rutin: And your character too has now really developed, and so we really enjoy having that just very different character who comes in the set and sort of just is a whirlwind and a fun destruction of all the other orderly stuff.
- 32:10Eric Rutin: So we I think we need to see some more of you, maybe not kidnapped, but yeah, exactly no.
- 32:17Amanda Khan: Something.
- 32:17Amanda Khan: Something fun and exciting would be great.
- 32:20Amanda Khan: Fingers crossed.
- 32:23Eric Rutin: All right, so we're going with the assumption that they are smart people and you're getting cast in the next one.
- 32:30Amanda Khan: So when we talked to, Jaycee.
- 32:31Eric Rutin: last time we were talking about how she's obviously a very accomplished singer on her own.
- 32:36Eric Rutin: And then we all know Nikki, you know girl band Nikki singer and all that.
- 32:40Eric Rutin: So we thought it'd be great to have a karaoke scene in there.
- 32:44Eric Rutin: Plus, you know, get Andrew, who I have no idea and I'm guessing may not quite have the singing chops or the other two.
- 32:50Eric Rutin: But once again, imdb doesn't doesn't lie.
- 32:53Eric Rutin: It says you yourself are very talented singing.
- 32:56Eric Rutin: So we're going to bring you into the, into the karaoke scene as well.
- 33:02Eric Rutin: So I think that would be just absolutely hilarious to have on there, and Jessamine also taking the stage in a karaoke would be absolutely hilarious on its own.
- 33:13Eric Rutin: But forget well, two part question, I guess.
- 33:17Eric Rutin: What would Amanda's karaoke go to be and what would Jessamine's karaoke go to be?
- 33:26Amanda Khan: Okay, so Jessamans came to me first.
- 33:28Amanda Khan: I think hers would be these boots, all right, A little.
- 33:36Eric Rutin: Nancy Sinatra walking out, okay, guy Hatter being like a Celine Dion, or Whitney Houston who just like, or Cher, who just comes in and just like boom pow, I'm gonna just do this big huge thing and all that, but I can definitely see it with the boots too, so, but all right.
- 33:57Eric Rutin: So then what's Amanda's?
- 34:00Amanda Khan: Oh gosh, my karaoke.
- 34:02Eric Rutin: Do you ever karaoke?
- 34:04Amanda Khan: Oh, I love, I live for karaoke.
- 34:06Amanda Khan: There's so many, I feel like I like anything that's kind of soulful, like Hallelujah, you know.
- 34:13Amanda Khan: Okay To something where you can kind of really sing your way through it, fast ones too.
- 34:19Amanda Khan: But yeah, I think Hallelujah.
- 34:23Eric Rutin: So you're the worst, because what happens is you get all these drunk people up there, who are, like you know, singing whatever yes, suspicious, mine are meant for me and then you come up and you do Hallelujah, just absolutely perfect, jaw dropping, and everyone's like, oh man, she sings.
- 34:42Eric Rutin: So all right, but we can do it, you can do it.
- 34:48Amanda Khan: Thank you.
- 34:49Eric Rutin: I've actually never heard anyone do Hallelujah in a karaoke before.
- 34:54Eric Rutin: The last time I did karaoke I did do Elvis and I did get thrown out because I ended up doing too much of a incorporation of doing like my little, tapping my head for the sweat and giving it to people and sitting on someone's lap and singing as I was doing my whole Elvis thing and then the whatever the bar said I was a little too animated into it so they said you got to go.
- 35:20Amanda Khan: Oh.
- 35:21Eric Rutin: I thought I was brilliant.
- 35:22Amanda Khan: Yeah.
- 35:23Eric Rutin: They don't sound like team players.
- 35:24Eric Rutin: Exactly, they're waking room for the next person who's getting up to sing Hallelujah in perfect pitch.
- 35:31Eric Rutin: So all right.
- 35:33Eric Rutin: Well, this has been absolutely a blast.
- 35:37Amanda Khan: Thank you.
- 35:38Eric Rutin: We are putting out all the positive energy because we just need to see you in the fourth one.
- 35:43Eric Rutin: Don't know which one it's going to be yet, which story it's going to be based off of, but whatever one it is, it has to have you in it.
- 35:51Eric Rutin: But in the meantime I know things have been kind of a little bit weird the last few months, but now, with things getting a little more normal, you got anything lined up that we can be looking forward to coming down the road soon or anything getting released soon.
- 36:05Amanda Khan: Yes, actually I shot a couple of movies for Christmas.
- 36:09Amanda Khan: There's one coming out called the Missalto Connection.
- 36:13Eric Rutin: Okay.
- 36:13Amanda Khan: It's on upTV.
- 36:15Eric Rutin: Nice.
- 36:16Amanda Khan: And with Jessica Seapos.
- 36:17Amanda Khan: She's wonderful.
- 36:19Amanda Khan: And another one that I shot with.
- 36:23Eric Rutin: Who are you in that one?
- 36:24Amanda Khan: So I am Estelle.
- 36:26Amanda Khan: I'm an art dealer, okay, and yeah, I have a shop in this sort of syndicate where there's a whole bunch of boutiques, and I don't want to give away too much of what's going on in the story, but yeah, estelle is a fun character as well too.
- 36:42Amanda Khan: I actually shot a movie last year with the Ken Jeong and I'm going to mispronounce her name, michelle Kruciak.
- 36:55Amanda Khan: It's called Tiger Mom and, yeah, they just Sounds fun.
- 37:01Amanda Khan: Yeah, it was fun and he was hilarious, I mean, even in person.
- 37:08Amanda Khan: And he's such a wonderful person as well too.
- 37:09Amanda Khan: He's so talented and every time someone says to him like a lot of the background were coming up to him saying, oh my gosh, we loved you in community and we loved you in the hangover, and he's like, oh, you're too kind, you're too kind.
- 37:20Amanda Khan: Just such a super talented person but so humble, so sweet, and I believe that's coming out early next year.
- 37:30Amanda Khan: So, yeah, I was a school teacher and I had a French accent very strict.
- 37:38Eric Rutin: Oh, and you speak fluent French too.
- 37:40Amanda Khan: Yes, I speak French too.
- 37:43Eric Rutin: I should have taken you.
- 37:44Eric Rutin: So this is actually about five years ago.
- 37:49Eric Rutin: I did a river cruise with Mayan Laws, where we started in Paris, went to Normandy.
- 37:56Eric Rutin: Well, you couldn't get out of Normandy but you go as far as you can go and then you take a bus all the way to Normandy and then you go back.
- 38:02Eric Rutin: But to prepare for it, I was doing the audio, learning the language on tape, and I'm horrible.
- 38:09Eric Rutin: I can barely speak English right and I was trying to learn French and I'd be just terrible at it.
- 38:14Eric Rutin: I'd be driving in my car and I'd be trying to pronounce it and I'd miss exits because I was so focused on it, but regardless.
- 38:20Eric Rutin: So we get to France and my wife also did it and she just was like I'd be like on chapter three and she'd be on chapter 17.
- 38:28Eric Rutin: She just was picking it up, no problem.
- 38:30Amanda Khan: And.
- 38:31Eric Rutin: I was so envious of her.
- 38:32Eric Rutin: So we get there and the very first restaurant we go in, I sit there and I try using my French.
- 38:39Eric Rutin: I'm all like I am going to do this and they're like no, we can give you your menu in English.
- 38:45Eric Rutin: I'm like no, no, no, there's no way.
- 38:48Eric Rutin: I've been doing this French thing and of course my wife just buckles like yeah, damn right, bring on that English menu.
- 38:53Eric Rutin: And so she spent the whole trip because everyone over there pretty much spoke English, yes, and which we discovered.
- 38:59Eric Rutin: But I was still determined to use my French.
- 39:01Eric Rutin: The first night I don't eat red meat, just so you know.
- 39:04Eric Rutin: So the first night there, we're going through the order and I order a duck and lo and behold, this big ol' hunk of steak, red meat, shows up.
- 39:14Eric Rutin: Apparently.
- 39:15Eric Rutin: I don't even know how you, I don't remember what duck is and steak, Somehow I was so bad with my communication that I ended up with a steak.
- 39:27Eric Rutin: And then, at another place, we were doing pizza and the waitress was like please, please, just use English.
- 39:33Eric Rutin: I'm like oh, I'm trying to do fromage or whatever, four cheese, pizza and stuff.
- 39:40Eric Rutin: But the crowning moment was we were in this little tiny town and it actually was a place where they didn't speak English.
- 39:47Eric Rutin: So I was like oh, here we go.
- 39:48Eric Rutin: And I successfully bought a postcard, a stamp, addressed it and then gave it back to him to mail, and I had to borrow a pen.
- 39:57Eric Rutin: And so I did this entire transaction all in my bad French.
- 40:02Eric Rutin: And from that moment on I was just like I am brilliant, I am through it.
- 40:07Amanda Khan: Well, it couldn't have been that bad if you managed to post your postcard.
- 40:10Eric Rutin: I was literally so proud of my.
- 40:11Eric Rutin: I couldn't order a cheese pizza, but I bought a postcard and mailed it, so I was so happy.
- 40:17Eric Rutin: It is a wonderful wonderful language which I wish I could like when you were just doing your little bit there.
- 40:24Eric Rutin: It's just a beautiful language.
- 40:25Eric Rutin: Yeah, it is it is, but I guess, when you and it's beautiful to sing in as well.
- 40:30Eric Rutin: Oh, now you're just really showing up.
- 40:33Eric Rutin: Not only do I sing, I'm multi-language, saying geez.
- 40:38Amanda Khan: Actually, maybe I should do an E-D-P-F song for karaoke.
- 40:41Amanda Khan: There you go.
- 40:43Eric Rutin: Perfect, perfect.
- 40:44Eric Rutin: Well, when you're in Toronto, I mean obviously I'd quit back next to you, but you didn't have to like, you didn't grow up having to speak like with French right.
- 40:55Amanda Khan: Yes, from grade four it was mandatory in school.
- 40:59Eric Rutin: See, I left in grade three.
- 41:00Eric Rutin: Wow, okay, there you go, but I'll say it too late.
- 41:05Eric Rutin: I would.
- 41:07Eric Rutin: I'd like to say I tried.
- 41:08Eric Rutin: I ended up with steak and bad pizza.
- 41:11Eric Rutin: So all right, all right, amanda, but this has been an absolute blast.
- 41:16Eric Rutin: I greatly appreciate it and we'll look forward to up TV.
- 41:21Eric Rutin: What was it called again?
- 41:22Eric Rutin: Mistletoe Prom, mistletoe Connection, mistletoe Connection you gotta have Mistletoe in the name there, so absolutely fantastic.
- 41:30Amanda Khan: Yes, thank you, eric, and my best to Sydney as well, too.
- 41:34Eric Rutin: Yes, I'm hoping with the new year her life will be settled in and we'll be able to get her back on a regular basis.
- 41:41Eric Rutin: And then, after Curious Cater Four, when you have even the bigger role, we'll get you back on and talk about it.
- 41:49Amanda Khan: I love that.
- 41:50Eric Rutin: Or maybe with all your other stuff, maybe you'll get the next role will be the lead in a new mystery.
- 41:57Eric Rutin: Then we'll really have something to it'll be the private private investigative, the no-nonsense private investigators.
- 42:04Eric Rutin: We'll see your range and you'll be the detective Tom yeah.
- 42:10Amanda Khan: So all right, let's put it out there.
- 42:12Eric Rutin: Like I said, we're sending all these positive vibes out there.
- 42:14Eric Rutin: We got all the stuff For sure.
- 42:17Amanda Khan: Okay have a wonderful rest of your weekend.
- 42:18Amanda Khan: Thank you, you too.
- 42:20Amanda Khan: Bye, eric, I'll see you next time.
- 42:23Amanda Khan: We hope you have a great week.
