- 0:50Speaker 2: Back here at Saint Vincent College in Latroe, Pennsylvania. Day
- 0:53Speaker 2: eight coverage of Pittsburgh Steelers Training Camp twenty twenty six
- 0:57Speaker 2: right here on Steelers Nation Radio and the Dealers Audio Network.
- 1:01Speaker 2: I am Ed Troup. We are in the locker room,
- 1:04Speaker 2: but I am not Rob King. You know that voice,
- 1:06Speaker 2: and that's not me, But next to me, I'm summing
- 1:08Speaker 2: in today, by the way, for Rob who has the
- 1:10Speaker 2: Pittsburgh Pirates this afternoon against the Milwaukee Brewers. But Max
- 1:15Speaker 2: Stark's in the locker room and Ma's first time working
- 1:18Speaker 2: with you. Man, I'm pumped to be beside you here
- 1:20Speaker 2: and get your thoughts on training camp so.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Far, looking forward to it, Ed, I mean, this is always,
- 1:25Speaker 3: you know, a fun time when we get to kind
- 1:26Speaker 3: of change up the line up a little bit and
- 1:28Speaker 3: we get to work with our other colleagues across the
- 1:31Speaker 3: different shows. So this this is fun. It's kind of
- 1:33Speaker 3: like a mashup show, you know, we kind of get
- 1:35Speaker 3: a nice little mix here. So now looking forward to
- 1:39Speaker 3: hanging out with you for the next two hours, and
- 1:41Speaker 3: we have live practice to watch. Because no more acclamation,
- 1:45Speaker 3: no more ramp up, no other cliche phrase that lets
- 1:50Speaker 3: you know that they're not allowed to do full things.
- 1:52Speaker 3: We are at full fledged practice. That's why this practice
- 1:55Speaker 3: started at eleven and we'll go to about one fourteen
- 1:59Speaker 3: seventy somewhere in that range. So it's a good day.
- 2:03Speaker 3: It's a good day.
- 2:04Speaker 2: It has been a good day here from Latrobe. A
- 2:06Speaker 2: lot of different storylines unfolding. We have the initial death
- 2:09Speaker 2: chart out Max that came out late last night beginning
- 2:12Speaker 2: of today, and again you're gonna take with that with
- 2:14Speaker 2: what you will it's something that's required by the NFL
- 2:16Speaker 2: that the Steelers have to do, as Aaron Rodgers across
- 2:19Speaker 2: the middle to Pat Friarmuth in this sequence that we're
- 2:21Speaker 2: seeing with eleven on eleven drills. But the initial death
- 2:24Speaker 2: chart is out there, required by the NFL, required by
- 2:27Speaker 2: the Steelers. But you know, Bob Labriola Labs was on
- 2:30Speaker 2: early this morning with Tom Auferman to kick off our
- 2:33Speaker 2: coverage here today, and he brought up a good point.
- 2:35Speaker 2: You know, when you look at that DK metcalf is
- 2:37Speaker 2: wide receiver number one, no doubt about that. But then
- 2:39Speaker 2: Ben Scronick is listed right behind him on that chart.
- 2:42Speaker 2: And no disrespect this Scronic. I mean, he's great player,
- 2:45Speaker 2: but if DK would go down in the game, Scronic's
- 2:48Speaker 2: probably not your number two that's coming in for him.
- 2:50Speaker 3: No, he's not. And Jeremy Bernard listed behind Michael Pitt.
- 2:54Speaker 3: I think you're gonna see it a lot of different
- 2:56Speaker 3: amalgamates once get you know, And I said, I said
- 2:58Speaker 3: this on training Camp live on on the Steelers dot
- 3:00Speaker 3: Com show. I said, this is just a template right right,
- 3:04Speaker 3: like you go online the Microsoft word hey click, A
- 3:07Speaker 3: template like this is starting a roster day one template.
- 3:11Speaker 3: Everything can be moved around, everything can be edited. In fact,
- 3:14Speaker 3: we got a we also have a signing today, right,
- 3:16Speaker 3: so we've already seen how the moving parts work with
- 3:20Speaker 3: the team. But you're right, you gotta throw guys somewhere.
- 3:24Speaker 3: And I mean when you look at the list, Am
- 3:26Speaker 3: I putting Ben Skearnic at Perry? Who else is behind him? Uh? Yeah,
- 3:33Speaker 3: Levi Wentz or Jacoby Keeney James who just came here
- 3:36Speaker 3: two days ago. Well I'm picking Vin Scaronic out of
- 3:38Speaker 3: out of that style of guys, right, yes, and you know,
- 3:41Speaker 3: and we'll get to the rest of the lineup and everything,
- 3:43Speaker 3: But yeah, you gotta put them somewhere. But I mean, listen,
- 3:45Speaker 3: Skoronic had in the first touchdown last year. So Ray
- 3:49Speaker 3: Jackson happens.
- 3:51Speaker 2: He's gotten a lot of work out here at Camp
- 3:52Speaker 2: two from Aaron Rodgers, as has Roman Wilson.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Roman Wilson has been a popular target for Aaron Rodgers.
- 4:00Speaker 3: In this camp, a lot of opportunities, and.
- 4:01Speaker 2: He's on the deaf chart. He's above Jeremy Bernard, but
- 4:05Speaker 2: I think it's more Jeremy Bernard. He's a rookie in
- 4:08Speaker 2: a crowded wide receiver room. He just hasn't had the
- 4:11Speaker 2: reps yet, but I'm sure that'll start to ramp up
- 4:13Speaker 2: as we go throughout this camp.
- 4:14Speaker 3: And I think that's the thing that you also have
- 4:16Speaker 3: to remember, right rookies, you're never gonna get in a
- 4:19Speaker 3: right okay, And I've said this across every platform everybody
- 4:24Speaker 3: talked to. The best a rookie can hope for is
- 4:26Speaker 3: a B plus plus because you're not gonna get an
- 4:29Speaker 3: A as a rookie, not this early. Like you gotta
- 4:32Speaker 3: you gotta go put some NFL reps under the proverbial belt, right.
- 4:36Speaker 3: I need you, I need you to need you put
- 4:38Speaker 3: a couple of feathers in the cat before we start
- 4:40Speaker 3: doling out the top of the alphabet. But for what
- 4:43Speaker 3: we've seen so far, Jeremy Bernard is a guy. He's
- 4:48Speaker 3: a guy that's gotten opportunities from Mason Rudolph, Drew Aller
- 4:51Speaker 3: and Will Howard. They've all looked to him, given him opportunities.
- 4:56Speaker 3: And when he has jumped in a few handful of
- 4:58Speaker 3: times with Aaron Rodgers, he's got a couple passes throw
- 5:01Speaker 3: in his way. But you're right, Roman Wilson has been
- 5:03Speaker 3: that number one third option because we know Michael Pittman,
- 5:06Speaker 3: we know Dk metcalf are one and two. But who's
- 5:09Speaker 3: gonna be number three? Right slot slash come in at
- 5:13Speaker 3: x or Z and be that filling guy. That's what
- 5:16Speaker 3: we're really working on. But this is a template. And
- 5:18Speaker 3: right there as we talk about it, Jared O you
- 5:21Speaker 3: I know, runs a shallow drag and turns it up
- 5:24Speaker 3: the sideline. And he's a big body too. You you
- 5:27Speaker 3: don't necessarily put that body type at slot, you know,
- 5:30Speaker 3: like that's an outside receiver. That's an ISO one on
- 5:33Speaker 3: one man coverage fifty to fifty ball receiver. But he
- 5:38Speaker 3: but but Mike McCarthy said, this's got to be a
- 5:40Speaker 3: play all positions.
- 5:40Speaker 2: That's it.
- 5:42Speaker 3: I might need you in the slot. Can you get hey?
- 5:45Speaker 3: Can you give me bond? Can you give me the
- 5:46Speaker 3: lefty right? Can you give me a wild thing, like,
- 5:48Speaker 3: give me something a little bit different that we're not
- 5:50Speaker 3: used to. So you have to be able to play everything.
- 5:52Speaker 3: But right there you have nice pitch and catch And
- 5:54Speaker 3: that was from Will Howard.
- 5:55Speaker 2: That's it, Will Howard.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Yep.
- 5:57Speaker 2: And now we see Drew All getting getting to work
- 6:00Speaker 2: in and there's another guy that hasn't had as many
- 6:02Speaker 2: reps as Will Howard, Mason, Rudolf and Aaron Rodgers has,
- 6:05Speaker 2: so when he's in there, he has to take advantage.
- 6:06Speaker 2: He goes to uegion another rookie, another rookie. It's the
- 6:09Speaker 2: rookie and that's one thing to Max store in this
- 6:11Speaker 2: camp that we've seen a weeknd from Mike McCarthy. He
- 6:14Speaker 2: has not been shy about this rookie class. They are
- 6:16Speaker 2: getting lots of reps and lots of work so far,
- 6:20Speaker 2: and some are shining, others maybe not as many reps
- 6:23Speaker 2: is as the ones in that upper class that we
- 6:24Speaker 2: were just talking about with Bernard and of course Maxi
- 6:26Speaker 2: Onchor which I'm axes just to get your feedback on.
- 6:28Speaker 2: He's the most popular Pittsburgh Steeler at this camp right now.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Especially that's right, great name and just having to be
- 6:36Speaker 3: drafted in the first round, so it's like two perfect things.
- 6:38Speaker 2: But Starks is a lot easier to say than.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Correct, especially when you look at it and you didn't
- 6:44Speaker 3: know how to say it at first. That's right, Yeah,
- 6:49Speaker 3: I I I I in core like chorus knows not
- 6:54Speaker 3: so yeah, you're absolutely right. But I think that's one
- 6:57Speaker 3: of the things that you love about this is that
- 6:59Speaker 3: you have guys who fill a multitude of roles. And look, oh, Kateen,
- 7:03Speaker 3: we just got a throw attempted at Oh wait a second,
- 7:06Speaker 3: we gotta we gotta camp fight, Yes, finally gotta fight
- 7:09Speaker 3: fisticuffs a little not not quite bench clearing. But I
- 7:14Speaker 3: love when a good scrape up.
- 7:15Speaker 2: You said, this isn't a physical camp, Max, right, exactly.
- 7:18Speaker 3: I mean, listen, it's it's a collision sport. So you know,
- 7:22Speaker 3: this is the collision attitude and feelings. I think that
- 7:25Speaker 3: was Ryan McCollum in the middle of the dust up. Uh,
- 7:28Speaker 3: And I couldn't see who the defensive guy was, but
- 7:31Speaker 3: I'm sure. Oh look Derek Harmon. Well it was not
- 7:35Speaker 3: harmonious there between Harmon and mc collumn. But yeah, you
- 7:39Speaker 3: know you need, yeah, you need a little bit of that,
- 7:41Speaker 3: you know, listen, just a little injection, you know, of
- 7:47Speaker 3: some emotion. Not that there's not plenty of testosterone to
- 7:50Speaker 3: go around down on the football field at any given moment,
- 7:53Speaker 3: but sometimes you like to see the physical application of
- 7:56Speaker 3: said frustration.
- 7:57Speaker 2: It seems. And you know, I was, I was an
- 8:00Speaker 2: old offensive lineman, not to your level, Max, but I
- 8:02Speaker 2: could speak a little O line with you. But as
- 8:05Speaker 2: an offensive line, you're it's usually in the trenches where
- 8:07Speaker 2: you see those camp fights happening with an offensive lineman
- 8:10Speaker 2: maybe holding up that block a little bit longer than
- 8:13Speaker 2: maybe they should, or a defensive line and maybe pushing
- 8:15Speaker 2: them back, and except.
- 8:17Speaker 3: I would say more so on their side, right that
- 8:20Speaker 3: the tug a little extra like little move at the
- 8:23Speaker 3: end when the whistles, and you're just like, you didn't
- 8:26Speaker 3: need to You didn't need to tug me there, didn't
- 8:28Speaker 3: didn't need to do it. I mean, heck, I mean
- 8:30Speaker 3: I can't tell you you know, I've broken my prominent
- 8:32Speaker 3: middle finger on my right hand because of O line,
- 8:35Speaker 3: D line.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Uh.
- 8:36Speaker 3: You know relations out there, DK Metcalf nice nice little
- 8:40Speaker 3: route up the seam there, Aaron through that one, but
- 8:47Speaker 3: nice seam route. I mean, the relationship that DK and
- 8:49Speaker 3: Aaron has built has carried over from last year this
- 8:53Speaker 3: year and only deepening now this year. You can see
- 8:55Speaker 3: they're getting on the same page and they understand each
- 8:58Speaker 3: other's strengths and and to release the football because Aaron
- 9:02Speaker 3: likes nice timing routes, right like, once I get the
- 9:04Speaker 3: break that I'm looking for, you give me the cue
- 9:07Speaker 3: to break the inside outside boom balls in the air,
- 9:09Speaker 3: and then now it's for you to locate it and
- 9:11Speaker 3: just know it's gonna where it's supposed to be, so
- 9:13Speaker 3: you don't have to look around. Crazy. But they're developing
- 9:15Speaker 3: a nice relationship. Like you said, he's building his encyclopedia
- 9:20Speaker 3: on Roman Wilson getting a lot of opportunities, and also
- 9:23Speaker 3: Michael Pittman like it's almost like he picks and chooses
- 9:26Speaker 3: his segments where he wants to really go after certain guys.
- 9:29Speaker 3: Another throw there to Rome Wilson, a little bit of
- 9:32Speaker 3: an overthrow. Nice coverage there defensively by Denico Slaughter, Ye
- 9:39Speaker 3: in coverage Roman and the kind of got twisted at
- 9:41Speaker 3: the top of the route brisker of course in coverage
- 9:44Speaker 3: is a deep safety, but wasn't a great read by Roman.
- 9:48Speaker 3: Roman kind of broke it to the inside and kind
- 9:49Speaker 3: of got stuck in the mud trying to come back out,
- 9:52Speaker 3: trying to run a double move on on Slaughter. But
- 9:55Speaker 3: that's the thing. You're you're testing each other out. Hey,
- 9:57Speaker 3: how fast are you recognition wise? How do you get
- 9:59Speaker 3: off of things? How do you get the breaks right
- 10:02Speaker 3: at the beginning Aaron's taking in all this information as well,
- 10:05Speaker 3: so that he knows when he goes into games, I know,
- 10:07Speaker 3: depending on whatever it is. Here's where I'm looking first.
- 10:10Speaker 3: I want to be able to make a quick decision.
- 10:12Speaker 3: Get the ball up because miche Car's talking about two
- 10:14Speaker 3: point three seconds. Two point three seconds not allowed speed dating,
- 10:17Speaker 3: Yeah it is, it is, And you might not even
- 10:20Speaker 3: get a birth date out in that time, you know.
- 10:21Speaker 3: But I need to know your birth date ahead of time.
- 10:24Speaker 3: So that's why we have practice out here. Another another
- 10:27Speaker 3: mistime read that was Jeremy Bernard this time. So, like
- 10:29Speaker 3: I said, we just saw two guys fighting for that
- 10:31Speaker 3: number three spot. Each guy just got an equal shot
- 10:34Speaker 3: and both guys kind of went the wrong way or
- 10:37Speaker 3: Aaron overthrew it for whatever reasons based on the coverageman.
- 10:39Speaker 3: Who's just getting the ball out. But this is what
- 10:41Speaker 3: camp's all about. This's about figuring out how it is.
- 10:44Speaker 3: And like you said, to go back to this depth
- 10:46Speaker 3: chart template not commandments. And when I say stone, yes,
- 10:51Speaker 3: is not in stone. It is not written. It didn't
- 10:54Speaker 3: come down from the mount. You know. This is just
- 10:57Speaker 3: the starting point because we still have three preseason games
- 11:00Speaker 3: to really flesh out how this is really going to
- 11:03Speaker 3: show itself. So this is just an initial I gotta
- 11:07Speaker 3: do it what I talked about all over the years.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Mike tomins like, I'd rather not do it, but here's
- 11:12Speaker 3: something for you guys. I'm just gonna put them together
- 11:14Speaker 3: and throw it out there. But I think Mike McCarthy
- 11:16Speaker 3: probably was a little bit more intentful than Mike Tomlin
- 11:18Speaker 3: was in this. But it's also there's no surprises.
- 11:21Speaker 2: On here for someone that's been on the air since
- 11:24Speaker 2: ten thirty this morning. We welcome it because it gives
- 11:26Speaker 2: us something to talk about.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Max, Yeah, it does.
- 11:28Speaker 2: It does a deep shot by Mason Rudolph, but there
- 11:31Speaker 2: was a procedure call up front. The officials are out
- 11:33Speaker 2: here as they have been every single practice.
- 11:35Speaker 3: I really don't appreciate it. Called it on somebody on
- 11:37Speaker 3: our side.
- 11:38Speaker 2: It's on the offensive side. Max. You know, you mentioned
- 11:42Speaker 2: DK Metcalf too, and you know we were talking camp
- 11:45Speaker 2: standouts earlier on our shows and maxi Onior being at
- 11:49Speaker 2: the top of that list. But DK, Brian Becko on
- 11:51Speaker 2: our show mentioned DK, and you just did as well.
- 11:54Speaker 2: The superstar playmakers in the NFL at training camp, maybe
- 11:58Speaker 2: not as many reps as they as other players would
- 12:02Speaker 2: get and maybe not needed, right, they don't need them.
- 12:04Speaker 2: But DK up here in this camp one weekend. I
- 12:06Speaker 2: don't know about you, but man, I feel like DK
- 12:09Speaker 2: is getting a big workload. And maybe that's the timing
- 12:11Speaker 2: that you spoke of with Aaron Rodgers. Not that it
- 12:13Speaker 2: was bad last season, it was their first year together.
- 12:16Speaker 2: You got a veteran quarterback, future Hall of Famer in
- 12:18Speaker 2: Aaron Rodgers and DK Metcalf. They got to be on
- 12:21Speaker 2: the same page. And boy they have They been on
- 12:23Speaker 2: the same page here at camp so far.
- 12:24Speaker 3: They've been on the same page. And also think about this,
- 12:26Speaker 3: Aaron Rodgers has not gotten off day yet, No, none,
- 12:29Speaker 3: we have been up here this entire time.
- 12:31Speaker 2: Cam Hayward an off day today, but I think he's
- 12:33Speaker 2: the first VET that's had that.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Yeah. TJ. Watt hasn't had an off day yet. No.
- 12:37Speaker 3: And you know, well, so there's not that many old
- 12:39Speaker 3: guys up there, so this roster would from really old
- 12:42Speaker 3: the year ago, it's getting young, so pretty young this time.
- 12:45Speaker 3: Ad obviously not like the youngest by any stretch. Yeah,
- 12:47Speaker 3: when you're talking about probably average age probably around twenty
- 12:49Speaker 3: seven to twenty eight years old, right, but last year
- 12:51Speaker 3: it was like thirty second it was. It was ancient.
- 12:54Speaker 3: So you know, Aaron hasn't gotten a break yet, TJ
- 12:58Speaker 3: hasn't gotten a break. Obviously, none of the offensive line
- 13:01Speaker 3: are going to get a break really because they're all young.
- 13:05Speaker 3: They're all young. I don't even think you know, and
- 13:07Speaker 3: you know, if we're going by toddler ages in years,
- 13:10Speaker 3: I think they're barely at the walking and eating solid
- 13:12Speaker 3: food face, you know, an offensive line. So you know,
- 13:15Speaker 3: I think that's kind of how you look at it
- 13:17Speaker 3: and say, Okay, there's a lot of work to be done,
- 13:19Speaker 3: and they get a lot of reps in, they get
- 13:22Speaker 3: a lie I know, they just bleue practice in and
- 13:23Speaker 3: if you guys heard that horn faintly in the background.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Practices officially ended today but started at eleven, ended at
- 13:30Speaker 3: one seventeen. So you're looking at a two hours you
- 13:34Speaker 3: know to what two hours in?
- 13:36Speaker 2: Just about two hours and ten minutes closing in.
- 13:38Speaker 3: I think, I see, yeah, seventeen minutes a little bit over,
- 13:41Speaker 3: but I think you get a plus or minus of
- 13:43Speaker 3: six what it is that you get to carry, That's
- 13:45Speaker 3: what it would be. And also the clock. Here's another
- 13:47Speaker 3: little trick to the trade. Here here, here's how the
- 13:49Speaker 3: sausage is made. That first early part of practice. When
- 13:53Speaker 3: they get down here, if the coaches aren't present, the
- 13:56Speaker 3: clock doesn't start.
- 13:57Speaker 2: That's interesting.
- 13:58Speaker 3: So if the coaches kind of me and a little
- 14:00Speaker 3: bit after eleven, they get down eleven oh four, that
- 14:03Speaker 3: clock doesn't start till all the coaches are on the field.
- 14:05Speaker 3: So all that individual work that you would do, that's
- 14:09Speaker 3: free house money there.
- 14:11Speaker 2: So just just to go along with that, because we've
- 14:14Speaker 2: been here for our show. Right at the beginning of
- 14:16Speaker 2: practice every.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Day it's not over. They're running it looks like they're
- 14:20Speaker 3: running a couple of last minute drills.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Okay, well maybe the last three more minutes left on
- 14:24Speaker 2: the clock is then moments. Oh, this is what we've
- 14:27Speaker 2: been building up for.
- 14:29Speaker 3: Yeah, there we go. So yeah, so we've got Franco moment.
- 14:32Speaker 2: We'll explain no, no, But you explained it because you
- 14:35Speaker 2: clarify when you came in. I said the max. I
- 14:36Speaker 2: said that the Franco moment that McCarthy spoke of in
- 14:39Speaker 2: his press conference, they quick change mojo moment, as he
- 14:42Speaker 2: referred to it. Yeah, surprise, I said, goal line drill.
- 14:45Speaker 2: But you you said, no, no, look Franco, it wasn't
- 14:47Speaker 2: at the goal line.
- 14:47Speaker 3: You're right.
- 14:48Speaker 2: This is situational football.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Right, yeah, these are These are not hail Mary's but
- 14:53Speaker 3: gotta have it because you're not just throwing the deep
- 14:56Speaker 3: bomb to the end zone. These are plays where you're
- 14:59Speaker 3: in a situation what can you do to be creative
- 15:02Speaker 3: last second based off of what the drill is. So
- 15:05Speaker 3: right now we have Drew Aller taking the snaps here
- 15:09Speaker 3: in this drill in this moment, so not the number ones,
- 15:12Speaker 3: and this gotta have it moment was a run play
- 15:16Speaker 3: and that looked like who was that was? It was that?
- 15:17Speaker 3: Oh Travis Homer in with him, And so they're going
- 15:21Speaker 3: like almost like a two minute drill type of situation
- 15:23Speaker 3: right now on the board, and they're just gonna try
- 15:26Speaker 3: and matriculate as fast as they can down the field.
- 15:29Speaker 3: Up ball was out. Who was a potential receiver was.
- 15:32Speaker 2: That Wentz product plan?
- 15:37Speaker 3: First of all, why is a receiver wearing I think.
- 15:39Speaker 2: I'm with you, man. Every time i've seen twenty eight,
- 15:41Speaker 2: I'm thinking it's a running back exactly.
- 15:43Speaker 3: That's a running back number. But okay, you know it's
- 15:46Speaker 3: now a wide receiver number. Levi Wentz. Okay, so that's him.
- 15:52Speaker 3: It looks like we have Drew aller Odenwegien in the
- 15:56Speaker 3: slot as well. Yep. On that and leave wins.
- 16:01Speaker 2: This is almost like your third fourth team.
- 16:04Speaker 3: Yeah, these are the guys that are actually going to
- 16:06Speaker 3: be in in these moments in the preseason and fourth quarter.
- 16:09Speaker 3: So more realistic than you'd want to see. And that
- 16:12Speaker 3: was Jukuan Davis, right, yep, uh das Joaquin Davis like
- 16:19Speaker 3: Joaquin Phoenix the same way.
- 16:21Speaker 2: And they got They had a minute thirty, so about
- 16:23Speaker 2: ninety seconds left on the clock when this started. Now
- 16:26Speaker 2: they're down to a minute three, so it looks like
- 16:27Speaker 2: they're stopping it. But the big clock off to the left, bax,
- 16:29Speaker 2: that might be our that's left in.
- 16:31Speaker 3: The practice that's your practice clock.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Okay, so that's three minutes. But the Steelers are no
- 16:35Speaker 2: rush here.
- 16:36Speaker 3: So it might be oh and they're and oh they
- 16:38Speaker 3: got a procedural penalty. So they got a penalty. So
- 16:40Speaker 3: now they're backing up on this next week. They need
- 16:43Speaker 3: to get in.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Quite I was going to say that they're under three
- 16:46Speaker 2: minutes left for the I think what's allowed. Mike McCarthy
- 16:49Speaker 2: with a chuckle. So obviously trying to set his offense
- 16:52Speaker 2: up here Max, but one oh three and they're going
- 16:54Speaker 2: to start that. Let's see from their own forty seven
- 16:57Speaker 2: this yard line we'll call it, and that is Drew
- 17:00Speaker 2: from Penn States. So well, just let's just walk you
- 17:02Speaker 2: through here. Let's see what Aler does with this two
- 17:04Speaker 2: minute offense and tries to find Wigion but too high.
- 17:07Speaker 3: Yeah, tried to climb the staircase. Did not have it.
- 17:09Speaker 3: Carson Brunner in coverage on that one, and so once
- 17:13Speaker 3: again little zone coverage there by the defense kind of
- 17:16Speaker 3: disguising it. So you're not going, man, Kayden Wegien, we
- 17:20Speaker 3: know it's very slippery fast. I mean I had a
- 17:21Speaker 3: bunch of his Iowa games back back over the last
- 17:24Speaker 3: couple of years, and I'm talking about six house calls
- 17:26Speaker 3: between punts did and kickoff returns. That's why out here
- 17:29Speaker 3: a depth chart. That's why he's your number one.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Part returner and kick returner.
- 17:33Speaker 3: Yeah, he's on the kick return so that's why he's
- 17:36Speaker 3: your number one guy. But also you want to see
- 17:38Speaker 3: what he can do offensively, because if you're getting a hat,
- 17:40Speaker 3: you don't know what's gonna happen. Receiver goes down, you
- 17:43Speaker 3: gotta jump in. You have so you have to be
- 17:45Speaker 3: able to be multi position flexible.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Next man up, Drew Aller here just under two minutes
- 17:50Speaker 2: left on the practice clock and the game clock that
- 17:53Speaker 2: stopped for this sequence of a real game event fifty
- 17:56Speaker 2: eight seconds and going Aller, nice pass off to the left,
- 17:59Speaker 2: but just a bit too low.
- 18:00Speaker 3: For ruision and Weison was running across. And that was
- 18:05Speaker 3: old Darnell Savage, New Rashan Jackins twenty seven.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Take a name and we got another one. Yeah, I
- 18:10Speaker 2: mean you know Israel Mukuamu.
- 18:12Speaker 3: Yeah, Mcuamu comes in Vet. He was obviously a guy
- 18:15Speaker 3: that was with Mike McCarthy in Dallas. Drafted in the
- 18:19Speaker 3: sixth round there, I think in twenty one. Now now
- 18:22Speaker 3: you won't mistake him on the field. He's six four
- 18:24Speaker 3: to two fifteen wow, a defensive as a defensive backslash safety,
- 18:28Speaker 3: big nickel. He's pretty much a defensive secondary piece and
- 18:31Speaker 3: also a core four special guys UH special team's candidate
- 18:35Speaker 3: as well. But it's it's chock full and now practice
- 18:39Speaker 3: officially over that they called it a minute twenty six early,
- 18:41Speaker 3: so trying to bank some of that extra time that
- 18:43Speaker 3: you might need later in camp, because that's another thing
- 18:46Speaker 3: they can kind of bank time. Like I said, there's
- 18:48Speaker 3: a sliding scale about six minutes extra.
- 18:50Speaker 2: And it's interesting when you said about the coaches coming down,
- 18:52Speaker 2: because I think I'm starting to go into and we
- 18:54Speaker 2: got distracted with what was going on the field. But
- 18:56Speaker 2: Travis Homer has been the first Steeler down every day
- 19:00Speaker 2: since we started last week with heat acclamations, the work,
- 19:03Speaker 2: the jugs machine in the right end zone. But he's
- 19:06Speaker 2: down here, including today, like twenty five minutes before anyone
- 19:09Speaker 2: else is down. So as you said, that doesn't count
- 19:11Speaker 2: towards their their clock for this practice because no coaches,
- 19:14Speaker 2: no coaches.
- 19:15Speaker 3: Are down here, so it's extra credit, so to speak.
- 19:17Speaker 3: This is like going to study hall before class starts
- 19:20Speaker 3: and trying to get just a little extra work in
- 19:22Speaker 3: finish your homework from the night before. Maybe who knows,
- 19:25Speaker 3: And those moments matter, and these environments people are watching
- 19:30Speaker 3: even when or not just talk about you. Guys have
- 19:32Speaker 3: noticed it. You blogged him as the number one guy
- 19:34Speaker 3: down here that matters, and coaches talk and people talk personnel, guys,
- 19:38Speaker 3: we could stand up top and we can see the
- 19:41Speaker 3: field ahead of time. I mean, fans get in here,
- 19:43Speaker 3: you know, thirty forty five minutes before, so they could
- 19:45Speaker 3: jock for their position down there, you know, on the
- 19:49Speaker 3: hill or you know, whether you're in the bleachers in
- 19:51Speaker 3: front of us here in the press box. But all
- 19:54Speaker 3: those things matter. People see that and they resonate that,
- 19:56Speaker 3: and the work is the work got to put it.
- 20:00Speaker 3: And that's why guys stay after after practice to get
- 20:02Speaker 3: a little extra, you know, in their groups, or you
- 20:04Speaker 3: pull a guy from the opposite side to have a
- 20:06Speaker 3: quick little chit chat with him. Obviously, if you haven't
- 20:09Speaker 3: gotten into a fight with him, it's going to be
- 20:10Speaker 3: better to talk to that guy. You know. I don't
- 20:13Speaker 3: think Ryan mccollin's gonna go ask Derek Harmon for anything
- 20:15Speaker 3: after he not right raw, Yeah, yeah, yeah, we could
- 20:19Speaker 3: talk tomorrow. You know, maybe if we're in the lunch
- 20:22Speaker 3: line we can have a conversation, but it definitely won't
- 20:24Speaker 3: be on the field. But that's what that's what this
- 20:26Speaker 3: environment is. So now it's done, guys are taking pads off,
- 20:29Speaker 3: but you see everybody starting to separate into their little
- 20:31Speaker 3: groups and just do some extra work. Like right here,
- 20:34Speaker 3: we got Mason McCormick, Zach Frasier, Troy Fatanu, and Spencer
- 20:37Speaker 3: Anderson walking to have a little corner. Dylan mccor Dylan
- 20:40Speaker 3: Cook trailing behind McCollum, and uh, I can't tell because
- 20:44Speaker 3: once again, curled up numbers always makes that a fun
- 20:48Speaker 3: process to figure out. Looks like it might be a
- 20:50Speaker 3: Greg Crippen rookie from Michigan also meandering over there on
- 20:56Speaker 3: the sidelines. So you know, Broderick having a talk with
- 20:59Speaker 3: coach jar Evans, which anytime you get to talk with
- 21:02Speaker 3: a Hall of Fame caliber offensive lineman, that is always
- 21:06Speaker 3: a good thing to talk to. Now, Jarry was a guard,
- 21:08Speaker 3: but he's talking to talking about tackle stuff.
- 21:10Speaker 2: So well, I'm going to continue to pick the brain
- 21:14Speaker 2: of an old offense. I'm not gonna say old, hold
- 21:17Speaker 2: on for a minute, hold on.
- 21:21Speaker 3: Former, Now here's the thing. We used to do this
- 21:25Speaker 3: all the time. Ractice that extra work, right, hey, endurance,
- 21:30Speaker 3: because once again, we are the ironman. We are the
- 21:32Speaker 3: Marine Corps of this football. If we're going in the
- 21:35Speaker 3: military terms up front, and and we are expected to
- 21:38Speaker 3: play the entire time like there's no like, hey, we're
- 21:41Speaker 3: to call in support. Now. A year ago we would
- 21:43Speaker 3: have called it in Spencer Anderson's six offensive line to
- 21:45Speaker 3: run the footall that's a whole different story. But you
- 21:48Speaker 3: have to be able to run and you need the
- 21:50Speaker 3: requisite endurance that's necessary. Now, Zach Spence and Troy Tale
- 21:56Speaker 3: of the tape, they ran a true half gasser. The
- 21:59Speaker 3: rest of the offense line literally ran across two fields.
- 22:02Speaker 2: They went all the way down.
- 22:04Speaker 3: Yeah, they went all the way straight. So that is uh,
- 22:08Speaker 3: that's about one hundred and one hundred and seventeen yards.
- 22:11Speaker 3: Yea one way across. I do like the change the
- 22:13Speaker 3: direction aspect of it, but listen long distance, however, you
- 22:17Speaker 3: can get the work. You get the work. I mean
- 22:19Speaker 3: we're running, we're moving. That's the most important thing. And
- 22:24Speaker 3: that's more Mason and that's Mason McCormick led and Max.
- 22:26Speaker 2: This is this is the players volunteering this right, I
- 22:29Speaker 2: mean after practice.
- 22:30Speaker 3: Nobody coaches them to do anything.
- 22:32Speaker 2: This is the extra workers.
- 22:34Speaker 3: This is the extra work that that's required. And like
- 22:36Speaker 3: I said, as an offensive line, and it started my
- 22:38Speaker 3: rookie year, Jeff Harding's Allen Fanica, you know, Marvel Smith,
- 22:44Speaker 3: Oliver Ross Keydrick, Vincent, Kendall, Simmons, Barrett Brooks, Chucky at Kobe, like,
- 22:50Speaker 3: those are the guys. I was a rookie with all
- 22:53Speaker 3: these veterans and I and you know, I definitely wasn't
- 22:56Speaker 3: maxianature where I had like a Jennings Duncan. I did
- 22:58Speaker 3: have a bow Lacey bow was. Bo was my buddy.
- 23:00Speaker 3: We were the two linemen that were drafted that year.
- 23:04Speaker 3: Bo was a sixth rounder. And then we brought in
- 23:06Speaker 3: a guy by the name of Josh Parrish and Drew Taylor,
- 23:09Speaker 3: where another two guys actually Drew was also drafted. So
- 23:13Speaker 3: three linemen. But but yeah, we were led by vets.
- 23:17Speaker 3: So Alan Fanica wanted to run half gassers and Jeff
- 23:19Speaker 3: Hardys wanted to red half gas. I guess what, we
- 23:20Speaker 3: all ran half gas. I'm not gonna do anything different.
- 23:23Speaker 3: This guy has Pro Bowls and All Pro honors and
- 23:25Speaker 3: the other guy is a first round draft pick and
- 23:27Speaker 3: Jeff Hardings that came over from Detroit, all Pro Bowl caliber,
- 23:32Speaker 3: all Pro caliber guys. I'm gonna follow them because obviously
- 23:34Speaker 3: they know what it takes to stay on a team.
- 23:36Speaker 3: So so yeah, so you followed them, and good to
- 23:39Speaker 3: see the leaders. Like I said, Zach Troy Mason and
- 23:43Speaker 3: McCollum all out there leading the charge on getting some
- 23:47Speaker 3: extra condition. It was anything basic. I mean we just
- 23:49Speaker 3: saw it two half gassers or one over and back
- 23:52Speaker 3: on the field at a good pace. But just something extra.
- 23:55Speaker 3: This has already been a too iro intimate in practice
- 23:56Speaker 3: as long as they've done so far. But get a
- 23:58Speaker 3: little bit extra, little bit extra.
- 24:01Speaker 2: We'll take a quick break. When we come back, we'll
- 24:02Speaker 2: get more here in the locker room with Max Starks.

- 25:37Speaker 2: Williamson will go with the drive to get you through
- 25:40Speaker 2: the rest here on day number eight, Max practice has
- 25:44Speaker 2: wrapped up here for the day and day number eight
- 25:47Speaker 2: we were talking earlier today about you know, Day one
- 25:50Speaker 2: was the first day in pads. It was a ramp
- 25:52Speaker 2: up period on Monday and Tuesday. Tuesday a bit more
- 25:55Speaker 2: physical than what we saw on day one. We were
- 25:58Speaker 2: not here yesterday because the practice was not open to
- 26:00Speaker 2: the public. I would imagine Mike McCarthy in his soft game.
- 26:04Speaker 2: They did a mock game. Okay, there you.
- 26:05Speaker 3: Go, that's what that is the official title of it,
- 26:10Speaker 3: but as a walk through practice and then yeah, because
- 26:12Speaker 3: he doesn't want to go three days in a row,
- 26:14Speaker 3: so he wants to go two quote unquote hard practices.
- 26:18Speaker 3: One day's a review kind of day. They kind of
- 26:20Speaker 3: take a breath and kind of do a cumulative review
- 26:22Speaker 3: of what we've learned thus far. So he likes to
- 26:24Speaker 3: do that just to make sure that the recall is
- 26:26Speaker 3: strong and that they're not really installing because they're throwing.
- 26:29Speaker 3: The entire playbook was open since day one, so now
- 26:31Speaker 3: there's a chance to kind of go back over things
- 26:33Speaker 3: at a slower pace, but get still a lot of reps.
- 26:36Speaker 3: I mean they had I think, I want to say,
- 26:38Speaker 3: I think the average was like seventy reps and they
- 26:41Speaker 3: have both fields going at the same time, so you're
- 26:43Speaker 3: getting one hundred and forty reps that so long we
- 26:45Speaker 3: would not get in a practice environment out here. But
- 26:49Speaker 3: like you said, you also don't want to show everybody
- 26:51Speaker 3: how the sausage is made from a day to day purpose.
- 26:54Speaker 3: And the fans got to see one of the mock
- 26:55Speaker 3: games but this is now more strategic, more high level
- 26:59Speaker 3: and getting ready for game preps. So you know, no
- 27:02Speaker 3: eyes here so in case you have some some Belichick
- 27:06Speaker 3: alumni an audience.
- 27:07Speaker 2: So there's a rhyme and reasons. That's why that announcement's made.
- 27:10Speaker 3: Do not yeah, don't show up on campus. You will
- 27:12Speaker 3: be turned away.
- 27:15Speaker 2: Imagine that. So there's a rhyme and reason to coach
- 27:18Speaker 2: McCarthy for the Wednesday not open to the public. It's
- 27:20Speaker 2: a review day to get you ready for the rest
- 27:22Speaker 2: of the week. That makes sense. Today Thursday definitely a
- 27:27Speaker 2: bit more physical than we saw earlier in the week.
- 27:30Speaker 2: We didn't have the individual battles a little bit down
- 27:32Speaker 2: here with the offensive line and defensive line.
- 27:34Speaker 3: I still did their O line, D line, and they
- 27:36Speaker 3: did some combination blocks in the run game today, which
- 27:39Speaker 3: was which was an addition. I guess because you have
- 27:42Speaker 3: more time, you can now start to integrate more of
- 27:45Speaker 3: the run game combination battles. And this is what Mike
- 27:49Speaker 3: McCarthy kind of talked about, what's the best one to
- 27:51Speaker 3: two punch combinations on the offensive line. Set of worrying
- 27:53Speaker 3: about who's that individual positions, it's what do the best
- 27:56Speaker 3: two and three man combinations look like. So this was
- 27:58Speaker 3: a first preview of the run gain side of that.
- 28:02Speaker 3: We'll obviously see some pass protection side of that come
- 28:05Speaker 3: later in camp, where you'll see double combos working twist
- 28:08Speaker 3: games against the defensive line. How do they communicate, how
- 28:11Speaker 3: do they bump off leveling so to speak, when a
- 28:14Speaker 3: guy makes the loop versus the guy that makes the penetration.
- 28:17Speaker 3: So there's so many different elements you have to watch,
- 28:20Speaker 3: and this is where it starts to get a little
- 28:21Speaker 3: bit more high level watching the offensive because I feel
- 28:24Speaker 3: like that's the only we and Rob and I talked
- 28:26Speaker 3: about this, that's only two true battles here in camp.
- 28:29Speaker 3: Everybody else you kind of know who's going to be
- 28:31Speaker 3: the starter, you kind of know who's going to be
- 28:32Speaker 3: in the rotation for wide receiver, you know, quarterback, running back,
- 28:37Speaker 3: and everything else. But there's two open jobs on the
- 28:39Speaker 3: right side that are available, right tackle and right guard.
- 28:42Speaker 2: That's a good segue to this again with this initial
- 28:45Speaker 2: depth chart that came out, Spencer Anderson's you're starting right guard,
- 28:48Speaker 2: Dylan Cooks, you're starting right tackle. Now, that's pretty much
- 28:51Speaker 2: in line what we've seen so far here in camp.
- 28:53Speaker 2: Correct the number ones. They're the two on the right
- 28:55Speaker 2: side have lined up, Roger Jones listed as number two
- 28:59Speaker 2: tackle behind Troy Fontanu on the left side, Maxianachur, the
- 29:03Speaker 2: first round draft pick, on the right side behind Dylan Cook.
- 29:06Speaker 3: So far, Yeah, so far, that's how it's looked. I think,
- 29:08Speaker 3: going into this first game, that's what you're probably gonna get.
- 29:11Speaker 3: I agree, and I think it's fair assessment, especially since
- 29:13Speaker 3: you know that Aaron's actually going to be playing in
- 29:15Speaker 3: these preseason games. That's already been been charted and talked about.
- 29:19Speaker 3: So first real access in twenty eighteen. Yeah for all
- 29:23Speaker 3: aa Ron jumping in there and of course against two
- 29:26Speaker 3: of his former teams in the preseason, right, getting the
- 29:28Speaker 3: Packers and yeah, first two So Bills is like, ah,
- 29:31Speaker 3: you weren't a Bill, so we could just sit you out.
- 29:33Speaker 3: This is another part of New York you didn't. He
- 29:34Speaker 3: didn't have to be in trip there too often.
- 29:36Speaker 2: Well, it's funny because we had Louis Lipp's former Pittsburgh
- 29:38Speaker 2: stewer wide receiver on our show with the Alumni. I
- 29:41Speaker 2: hear this morning and we talked to him about preseason
- 29:44Speaker 2: games and he said, back then, Chuck Nole was going
- 29:47Speaker 2: to win, although they played like five or six preseason
- 29:50Speaker 2: games at one time. He went after the starters played
- 29:53Speaker 2: because he wanted to win the preseason games even though
- 29:55Speaker 2: it didn't matter a little bit different today, But at
- 29:58Speaker 2: least for our purposes, as you said, it sounds like
- 30:00Speaker 2: at least number eight is going to get some action
- 30:02Speaker 2: as well as some of the other starters here in
- 30:03Speaker 2: the next couple weeks.
- 30:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I think. I mean, if there's a guy that
- 30:06Speaker 3: I think is not going to play or two, I
- 30:08Speaker 3: should say they'd be on the defense side of the ball.
- 30:11Speaker 3: And number ninety in your playbooks, number one in your
- 30:14Speaker 3: hearts and jersey sales here for the Pittsburgh area, and
- 30:17Speaker 3: then number ninety seven, Right, Papa Bear is not going
- 30:20Speaker 3: to play in there, and I don't need him to.
- 30:23Speaker 3: He's got fourteen prior years of preseason experience as we
- 30:26Speaker 3: can lean on. I think he can do that. But
- 30:28Speaker 3: I think for Aaron this is a good exercise him
- 30:31Speaker 3: because once again he's readjusting himself to a system that
- 30:35Speaker 3: he already knows. Right, he ran in this system under
- 30:37Speaker 3: Mike McCarthy for thirteen years, but he also hasn't ran
- 30:41Speaker 3: in seven years, so it's been a minute. Let's go
- 30:44Speaker 3: get some live action rep so that Week one against
- 30:46Speaker 3: the Falcons is not the first time we've all done
- 30:49Speaker 3: this drill before. And as we know, Mike McCarthy very
- 30:52Speaker 3: detailed oriented, just like Aaron Rodgers twenty one years and
- 30:55Speaker 3: still going to quarterback school. Hasn't quite got his post
- 30:58Speaker 3: secondary degree yet, so still working on some extra credits there.
- 31:01Speaker 3: You know, maybe he'll graduate, you know at the end
- 31:03Speaker 3: of this year, maybe Finger's crossed a spring graduate finally
- 31:07Speaker 3: with seventeen degrees by then. But you know, that's the process,
- 31:11Speaker 3: and I think I think that's the right thing to do.
- 31:13Speaker 3: Like you just you got to move the body right,
- 31:15Speaker 3: You've got to have a little bit of a live
- 31:18Speaker 3: game time feeling. Back when I played, that's what we did.
- 31:21Speaker 3: We had four preseason games. Your starters were gonna ramp
- 31:23Speaker 3: up into that we're gonna get a series or two
- 31:25Speaker 3: in the first preseason game, second game, get a quarter.
- 31:29Speaker 3: Third game was really like our first half or dress rehearsal,
- 31:33Speaker 3: dress rehearsal game. And then you maybe came out if
- 31:35Speaker 3: we had the ball first offense, you're going starting to
- 31:38Speaker 3: start the second half and then boom, bring it back
- 31:40Speaker 3: and then last game that that's the bottom of the roster,
- 31:44Speaker 3: trying to see who's gonna get cut or not. So
- 31:46Speaker 3: your starters maybe get a series in there, but your
- 31:48Speaker 3: starting quarterback will probably sit out. So you get your
- 31:50Speaker 3: rep with your number two just in case he has
- 31:51Speaker 3: to come in, get live game reps, and then boom done,
- 31:54Speaker 3: ready for the season. Max.
- 31:56Speaker 2: I have to ask you about Maxionichory, the Steelers number
- 31:59Speaker 2: one draft pick. And I know you and Rob have
- 32:01Speaker 2: probably talked about this, but you haven't talked about it
- 32:03Speaker 2: with me.
- 32:03Speaker 3: That's true.
- 32:04Speaker 2: And the especially this week, you know, in the last
- 32:07Speaker 2: twenty four to forty eight hours, if if you turn
- 32:10Speaker 2: on social media and look around, he is the hot
- 32:13Speaker 2: topic right now here at Pittsburgh Sewers training camp of
- 32:15Speaker 2: how well he's done, specifically to the reps that he
- 32:18Speaker 2: did on Tuesday when he had to go up against
- 32:20Speaker 2: the likes of TJ. Watt and Alex high Smith and
- 32:23Speaker 2: Nick Herbig. He won. If you want to call win
- 32:27Speaker 2: or lose depending on how you wanted to find.
- 32:29Speaker 3: An objective there with that one, I'm going to call
- 32:31Speaker 3: them victories not because I'm an offensive lineman, because I'm biased.
- 32:34Speaker 2: And well, you should be my friend. But that was
- 32:38Speaker 2: the communication. That was the feedback that the number one
- 32:40Speaker 2: draft pick held his own and if not just holding
- 32:44Speaker 2: his own, won a lot of those battles.
- 32:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean he played well and I would say
- 32:47Speaker 3: easily probably had the most consistent performances across the offensive
- 32:52Speaker 3: line in those drills. I agree. So he got he
- 32:55Speaker 3: got a B plus plus from me day one.
- 32:57Speaker 2: There you go, do creating scale.
- 32:59Speaker 3: Yeah, then you got a beat plus plus plus on
- 33:01Speaker 3: day two. So he will never get an A until
- 33:05Speaker 3: we've seen a preseason game and he's put it all
- 33:07Speaker 3: together in a competitive environment driving the football. But for
- 33:12Speaker 3: camp purposes, that's the highest he's gonna get. So he's
- 33:15Speaker 3: graded out the highest thus far. Guys have looked solid though.
- 33:19Speaker 3: I mean Mason McCormick and Zach Frazier. We know what
- 33:21Speaker 3: we're getting with them. We know what we're getting with
- 33:23Speaker 3: those two. They're solid, still steadily rising. I still want
- 33:27Speaker 3: to see a little bit of a bigger jump instead
- 33:29Speaker 3: of a step with them. Troy Fautanu, you know, had
- 33:33Speaker 3: really good reps and then got beat a couple times,
- 33:35Speaker 3: which you know, adjusting to the left full speed, that's
- 33:38Speaker 3: gonna happen. He played all right tackle a year ago.
- 33:40Speaker 3: Still has to get the body in the right position
- 33:42Speaker 3: with the legs, so the biomechanics has to kick in there.
- 33:46Speaker 3: Roger Jones had a couple of good snaps and then
- 33:48Speaker 3: had a couple of bad ones. You know, he's and
- 33:49Speaker 3: he's swinging left and right on his responsibilities. Looks, of
- 33:54Speaker 3: course as good as I expect on the left side.
- 33:56Speaker 3: Solid right side was a little shaky. So when you're
- 33:59Speaker 3: thinking about out battling for the right tackle job, you're
- 34:02Speaker 3: also battling for that swing tackle job as well. So
- 34:04Speaker 3: there's two positions up at play at the tackle position
- 34:07Speaker 3: at the same time, just the same as the interior.
- 34:10Speaker 3: You're gonna have your starting right guard. Then you're gonna
- 34:12Speaker 3: have your swing interior guard who can play all three
- 34:15Speaker 3: in the middle. And so right now you have brock
- 34:17Speaker 3: Hoffman's lotted. It is that guy that because he has
- 34:20Speaker 3: center experience as well, that could also do that, just
- 34:23Speaker 3: like Spencer Anderson. So there's four jobs technically on the line.
- 34:27Speaker 3: You got one, you got you got right tackle, right guard,
- 34:29Speaker 3: but you also got number six, number seven linemen.
- 34:31Speaker 2: You know, Max, I know, I know You're you're biased,
- 34:33Speaker 2: So I'm gonna tee this one up for you, but
- 34:35Speaker 2: I'm gonna be biased with you on what I'm about
- 34:37Speaker 2: to say next. I was driving up this morning. I
- 34:40Speaker 2: was looking and thinking to myself. I wasn't looking while
- 34:42Speaker 2: I was driving, but I was thinking to my No, no, we.
- 34:44Speaker 3: Never drive distracted, and we want you out there listening
- 34:47Speaker 3: on cars. The only due you will do is listening
- 34:50Speaker 3: and driving.
- 34:51Speaker 2: Okay, exactly, yes, But I was thinking about the Steelers'
- 34:54Speaker 2: offensive rooms, uh, and specifically the offense, the quarterback room,
- 34:58Speaker 2: the running back room, receivers, tight ends, and then the
- 35:00Speaker 2: offensive line group. I feel that this is the first
- 35:03Speaker 2: time in a long time that the strongest room right
- 35:06Speaker 2: now on this roster is the offensive line room. They're young,
- 35:10Speaker 2: they're strong. You have Zach Fraser, who's poised to become
- 35:14Speaker 2: maybe the best center, if not the second or third
- 35:16Speaker 2: best center in the National Football League this season. McCormick,
- 35:20Speaker 2: Strong Fontano as you just spoke to on the left side.
- 35:23Speaker 2: They got this right side that they're trying to figure
- 35:25Speaker 2: out right now. But they have great options with Spencer Anderson,
- 35:28Speaker 2: Dylan Cook, maxionichor brock Hoffman. As you said, Roger Jones
- 35:32Speaker 2: still in the mix on both sides if you want
- 35:33Speaker 2: to plug him in there, if you have to. This
- 35:36Speaker 2: group is really strong right now and poised to maybe
- 35:39Speaker 2: maybe be one of the best, if not, you know,
- 35:42Speaker 2: one of the top five offensive linemen linemen in the
- 35:45Speaker 2: National football.
- 35:46Speaker 3: And we still got to think about Ryan McCollum, who's
- 35:48Speaker 3: been a long time backup and a good guy that's
- 35:50Speaker 3: come in and filled in when Zach Frazer got injured
- 35:52Speaker 3: a couple of years ago, so he's still in that mix.
- 35:55Speaker 3: And then you got Jennings Dunker. Of course, the flaming
- 35:57Speaker 3: hot Cheeto himself coming in here. Took Pittsburgh I storm when
- 36:00Speaker 3: he got drafted. Still love that guy. Best hair in football.
- 36:04Speaker 3: Yeah you got I mean, you got those guys. You
- 36:05Speaker 3: got Jack driscoll that's in the mix. You got a
- 36:07Speaker 3: couple other rookies. So there's a lot of talent and depth,
- 36:12Speaker 3: and you're right, I think it's the deepest room we
- 36:14Speaker 3: have talent wise, because there's untapped and there's also proven talent,
- 36:19Speaker 3: and that's when you're talking about having a football team.
- 36:22Speaker 3: You need that mix constantly. And it's also a lot
- 36:24Speaker 3: of that's home grown outside of brou k Hoffman. All
- 36:27Speaker 3: these guys were handpicked by the Steelers, whether it's draft picks,
- 36:29Speaker 3: are undrafted free agents. So that's a good place to be,
- 36:31Speaker 3: and that's what you want to be. You don't want
- 36:33Speaker 3: to be in the mercenary business where you're just picking
- 36:34Speaker 3: up free agents to plug and play every single year.
- 36:37Speaker 3: Ala Cleveland, Alla, Houston, Texas. Anyways, I'm not gonna get
- 36:40Speaker 3: buy it that, but that's that's where you're at because
- 36:44Speaker 3: you're bringing guys into you know, already fit your culture,
- 36:46Speaker 3: and you're not trying to retro fit guys and also
- 36:49Speaker 3: unlearning them to what they are, what they've known, and
- 36:52Speaker 3: then reinstitute new policies in these guys are growing up
- 36:55Speaker 3: in the culture as NFL athletes.
- 36:57Speaker 2: And it was not that case for aut here. Yeah,
- 37:00Speaker 2: up front, I mean there were a lot of moving parts,
- 37:02Speaker 2: some injuries, guys coming in coming out. You know, each year,
- 37:06Speaker 2: I felt like each week, I'm sure when you rub
- 37:09Speaker 2: and prior to rob, you know, when you guys, yeah
- 37:12Speaker 2: with Wolf, when you guys would sit down and look
- 37:13Speaker 2: at this offensive line, you'd have to piece together, what's
- 37:15Speaker 2: it gonna look like?
- 37:16Speaker 3: He see Cole James Daniels. I want to see a malu. Now. Granted,
- 37:20Speaker 3: some of those guys fit better than others, but still
- 37:22Speaker 3: a lot of turnover and figuring out. Kendrick Green was
- 37:25Speaker 3: a former d lineman that was learning to be an
- 37:27Speaker 3: offensive lineman. So you're right, you didn't get professional linemen
- 37:31Speaker 3: out of the way that were drafted here. A lot
- 37:33Speaker 3: of those guys had to be supplemented through free agency
- 37:36Speaker 3: and through you know, signings throughout the off season or trades.
- 37:41Speaker 3: So now you're actually, this is this is what it's
- 37:43Speaker 3: supposed to look like. Right, it's supposed to look like
- 37:46Speaker 3: draft pic, draftic, draftic, draft pick, draftick, undrafted, free agent, signed,
- 37:50Speaker 3: has been here his entire career. All those are kind
- 37:52Speaker 3: of how you have to look at an offensive line
- 37:55Speaker 3: room because it also is the largest concentration of your
- 37:57Speaker 3: team resources. So of the fifty three of available, eight
- 38:01Speaker 3: to nine of those guys are in the offensive line room.
- 38:04Speaker 2: Including three first round draft picks in the last four years.
- 38:08Speaker 3: Right, yes, three of your first first rounders.
- 38:10Speaker 2: Yep, And uh, they're in a good spot, that's for sure.
- 38:13Speaker 2: And again, it's a good problem to have when you're
- 38:14Speaker 2: sitting here having a debate in August about Spencer Anderson,
- 38:18Speaker 2: Dylan Cook, Maxiona Chore, gonna throw brock Hoffmin in there,
- 38:21Speaker 2: who I think is nasty. I thought that was a
- 38:23Speaker 2: great free agent pickup that the Steelers added into this
- 38:26Speaker 2: room in the off season.
- 38:27Speaker 3: Yeah, you need you need the vet, you need the
- 38:28Speaker 3: adult in the room. So now, granted, the guys are
- 38:31Speaker 3: gaining a lot of experience and they're becoming more adult like,
- 38:34Speaker 3: but like I said, I mean, if we're talking about
- 38:36Speaker 3: toddler years, they're just eating solid foods. So they're still
- 38:39Speaker 3: a very young group.
- 38:39Speaker 2: There still more to do.
- 38:41Speaker 3: Yeah, still more to do, and Isaac Ciamala was that
- 38:43Speaker 3: voice to kind of stabilize that for a number of years. Now,
- 38:45Speaker 3: insert brock Hoffman as kind of that vet in the room.
- 38:49Speaker 3: That's gonna, that's gonna, that's gonna round things out and
- 38:52Speaker 3: allow this group to really grow. But also know that
- 38:55Speaker 3: you have a steady vet in there. And he also
- 38:56Speaker 3: he's he's a he's a Mike McCarthy alumnus, So.
- 38:58Speaker 2: Mike Mike McCarthy and offensive minded head coach for sure.
- 39:02Speaker 2: And with this offensive line, he wants them to protect
- 39:05Speaker 2: a veteran quarterback and Aaron Rodgers that they're gonna have
- 39:08Speaker 2: to and a running game in which they're looking to
- 39:10Speaker 2: get more out of with Jalen Warren and now Rico Donald.
- 39:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean that backfield, you know, and you know
- 39:16Speaker 3: having Rico come in here, and you know he's one
- 39:18Speaker 3: of those guys we talk about. He's as advertised, you know,
- 39:20Speaker 3: a guy who comes versatile, three slash four down back.
- 39:24Speaker 3: As Mike pursuita to try to correct me, I'm like,
- 39:26Speaker 3: fourth down, I'm picking Cam Johnson in the backfield that
- 39:29Speaker 3: Rico Dowell. Okay, unless like fourth and one, fourth and two,
- 39:32Speaker 3: but its fourth and six. Bring Cam in, punt the
- 39:34Speaker 3: ball and he's gonna punt it a mile, So I
- 39:37Speaker 3: trust I trust his leg better in that. But a
- 39:40Speaker 3: three down back one that Mike McCarthy talked about a
- 39:42Speaker 3: couple of days ago in his press conference, I don't
- 39:45Speaker 3: want to have to think about who's in the backfield
- 39:47Speaker 3: on third down. I'm worried about calling the right play,
- 39:50Speaker 3: and that's what I need these backs to be able
- 39:51Speaker 3: to do. Three down versatile. So, like you said, Jalen Warren,
- 39:54Speaker 3: we know, we know that he's going to be a
- 39:56Speaker 3: three down back. Rico Dawdle showing us all signs in
- 39:59Speaker 3: his as, I says, three down back. Now, who's that
- 40:02Speaker 3: third guy? Is it Caleb Johnson? Is it Lou Nichols?
- 40:04Speaker 3: Is it Travis Homer? Is it Eli heiden Reich? And
- 40:07Speaker 3: we know Riley Milkowski is just he's a He's a fullback.
- 40:11Speaker 3: That's what he's built for, That's what God intended him
- 40:13Speaker 3: to be. He's a guy, yeah, and he looks at
- 40:16Speaker 3: every part of it. A lot of muscle there. So
- 40:19Speaker 3: that's your rotation. So who's gonna be number three? Can
- 40:21Speaker 3: Caleb Johnson, you know, rebound from last year he was
- 40:24Speaker 3: in the doghouse with Arthur Smith. But new coach, new staff,
- 40:27Speaker 3: new opportunity. Can he go and take that third running
- 40:30Speaker 3: back position.
- 40:31Speaker 2: We talked a bit about Caleb Johnson during our broadcast
- 40:34Speaker 2: here earlier today Max with Brian Becko and Chris Adamski,
- 40:39Speaker 2: and uh, you know, he hasn't done anything to hurt himself,
- 40:42Speaker 2: I think so far. But the same time, he hasn't
- 40:44Speaker 2: done anything where we go, wow, Caleb Johnson's back. I
- 40:47Speaker 2: don't know if that's a good thing, right. He needs
- 40:49Speaker 2: those wild moments in this training camp. He hasn't gotten
- 40:52Speaker 2: him yet. But in his defense, it's a tough for
- 40:54Speaker 2: room to get those reps. It's been a lot of
- 40:56Speaker 2: Jalen Warren, ric O'Donnell. But one thing I think that
- 40:58Speaker 2: was telling today was when they went for that third look,
- 41:01Speaker 2: it was Travis Homer who was getting a lot of
- 41:03Speaker 2: those looks, not Caleb Johnson.
- 41:04Speaker 3: And we talked about in that two minute drill, the
- 41:06Speaker 3: Franco moment session the most session. Yeah, it was Travis Homer, right,
- 41:10Speaker 3: and he and he actually got to pass in the middle.
- 41:12Speaker 3: So yeah, Caleb Johnsons gonna have to fight a lot
- 41:16Speaker 3: because like you said, uh, this is a very packed room.
- 41:20Speaker 3: I mean, Lou Nichols look good a year ago in camp.
- 41:23Speaker 2: And the preseason.
- 41:24Speaker 3: So it's like, so there's a guy who has something
- 41:27Speaker 3: to prove and he got another shot, another bite at
- 41:29Speaker 3: the apple. So what is he gonna do? And like
- 41:31Speaker 3: you said, Travis Homer getting some early looks here with
- 41:34Speaker 3: Drew Aller and Will Howard, they're throwing the football. So
- 41:37Speaker 3: Caleb Johnson, you got you gotta you gotta come along.
- 41:39Speaker 3: But that running back room, I feel good about it
- 41:41Speaker 3: because there's versatility back there. Once again, another deep group,
- 41:45Speaker 3: not as deep as the old line. But this is
- 41:47Speaker 3: what we're talking about, Like, there's no real thin groups
- 41:49Speaker 3: here at camp where it has been in years past.
- 41:51Speaker 3: You're like, ah, we go past the starters. I don't.
- 41:53Speaker 3: I don't know here. I feel comfortable. We could run
- 41:56Speaker 3: two full lines and you've got quality guys across the board,
- 42:00Speaker 3: your TV.
- 42:01Speaker 2: And it's a weird conversation to have when your team
- 42:04Speaker 2: MVP and Kenny Gamewell leaves via free agency. But yeah,
- 42:08Speaker 2: you still feel good about that room. And in fact,
- 42:11Speaker 2: I'm gonna whisper this Max when I say this, but
- 42:13Speaker 2: I don't even feel a little bit better with this
- 42:15Speaker 2: room this year than I did a year ago. And
- 42:16Speaker 2: no disrespect to Kenny g Hey, look he got paid,
- 42:19Speaker 2: he moved on. But when you lose your team MVP
- 42:22Speaker 2: at that position, you're thinking yourself, where do we go
- 42:24Speaker 2: from here? But I feel good about this group.
- 42:26Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, look at Seattle lost Kenneth Walker, who
- 42:29Speaker 3: was a Super Bowl Super Bowl VP, not just TV,
- 42:32Speaker 3: was m VP of the biggest game of the year,
- 42:34Speaker 3: and he was able to walk in Seattle hasn't missed
- 42:37Speaker 3: a beat either, So you know, I think that's what
- 42:40Speaker 3: it comes to. But that's also trusting that in that
- 42:42Speaker 3: group up top the scouting department, your management, Omar Khan
- 42:46Speaker 3: at the head, at the head of that triangle of
- 42:48Speaker 3: of of of individuals. He is the head of that.
- 42:51Speaker 3: Andy Whidel is a support guy. And they knew they
- 42:54Speaker 3: could go in free agency and replace that skill set
- 42:57Speaker 3: and still give this team an opportunity. Hints insert Rico
- 43:00Speaker 3: into the conversation. And as we've seen in camp, look
- 43:03Speaker 3: good three down backs. Mike McCarthy doesn't have to change
- 43:07Speaker 3: who's in there and try and insert them into the offense.
- 43:10Speaker 3: And I think you're right when you talk about Kenny Gainwell,
- 43:13Speaker 3: where did Canwell make his hey third down? He was
- 43:16Speaker 3: a third down back out of the backfield, and he
- 43:18Speaker 3: was a change up to Jalen Warren. And Caleb Johnson
- 43:21Speaker 3: was just kind of a plugger and chugger. You know,
- 43:23Speaker 3: we're we're gonna see him first and second down. But
- 43:25Speaker 3: that's what Caleb Johnson now gets the opportunity to do
- 43:28Speaker 3: is do you have the hands out of the backfield?
- 43:30Speaker 3: Can you be a three down back? Can you be
- 43:32Speaker 3: that guy that can come over and blitz pick up
- 43:34Speaker 3: and pick up that back or that's blitzing off off
- 43:36Speaker 3: the blind side that the quarterback doesn't see. You're the
- 43:38Speaker 3: hot guy and you gotta make the quarterback right. Those
- 43:40Speaker 3: are the little things they're gonna see, and so great
- 43:44Speaker 3: opportunity there is. There's a lot of open battles, but
- 43:48Speaker 3: they're just not frontline starting positions, and they're right there.
- 43:50Speaker 3: Third running back is the question that we're looking at
- 43:53Speaker 3: in camp. Who's gonna be number three? We know who
- 43:54Speaker 3: the top two are. Who's gonna be number three that
- 43:57Speaker 3: can round out that room?
- 44:00Speaker 2: You'd have to think it's Travis Homer out in front
- 44:03Speaker 2: of Caleb Johnson and Loud Nichols, but still more to come,
- 44:06Speaker 2: and maybe Caleb Johnson, as you said, with a new
- 44:08Speaker 2: coaching staff, works his way back into good graces with
- 44:12Speaker 2: that room. Whenever we come back, we'll talk some defense
- 44:15Speaker 2: with Max Starks here in the locker room. We've talked
- 44:17Speaker 2: to all offense here in our number one, but now
- 44:19Speaker 2: our number two, let's talk Pittsburgh Steelers defense. That what
- 44:22Speaker 2: we've seen so far a week now here into training camp.

- 45:27Speaker 2: continuing coverage of Pittsburgh Steelers' training Camp twenty twenty six
- 45:30Speaker 2: right here on Steelers Nation Radio and the Steelers Audio Network.
- 45:35Speaker 2: We are in the locker room with Max Starks and
- 45:37Speaker 2: Rob King Rob Off this afternoon. So I'm at troop
- 45:41Speaker 2: and I'm subming in for Rob Max. You know, right now,
- 45:44Speaker 2: practice just let up for the first practice of two
- 45:48Speaker 2: for today. This is the first one with pads. There's
- 45:50Speaker 2: a walkthrough later on this afternoon that the team usually
- 45:52Speaker 2: does here from Saint Vincent College. It is not open
- 45:54Speaker 2: to the public or us here in the media. But
- 45:57Speaker 2: what do you do during this time? Do you do
- 45:59Speaker 2: you grab some lunch? Do you go take a nap?
- 46:01Speaker 2: Do you watch film? Is it a little bit of
- 46:03Speaker 2: everything here going into the early afternoon hours.
- 46:06Speaker 3: Uh so, mindset for myself here as I was in
- 46:10Speaker 3: the two to one two era and that's not an
- 46:13Speaker 3: area code. That was two days, two practices a day
- 46:15Speaker 3: to one practice a day and then back to two
- 46:17Speaker 3: and kind of did that shower, shower, go eat, no eat,
- 46:23Speaker 3: got to refill the tank listen. You know, as ye
- 46:26Speaker 3: Black has coined his uh training camp look free the gut, Well,
- 46:31Speaker 3: you got to feed the gut too, So feed the
- 46:32Speaker 3: gut first and then kind of get off your feet
- 46:34Speaker 3: for a couple because then they go into meetings now
- 46:37Speaker 3: with the new ruling since the new CBA, no two
- 46:41Speaker 3: a days. But you can't have a quote unquote walk through,
- 46:43Speaker 3: and they usually do that in the gym or the
- 46:47Speaker 3: or the indoor facilities. Sometimes they come out here on
- 46:49Speaker 3: the field and do a detailed scripted walkthrough, so you
- 46:54Speaker 3: just want to get off your feet, don't don't want
- 46:56Speaker 3: to nap just yet, and then there's plenty of meetings
- 46:58Speaker 3: in between. You'll kind of get the first re action
- 47:01Speaker 3: from practice film. You know, coaches will and then here
- 47:04Speaker 3: here's the thing, so coaches what they'll do quick lunch
- 47:07Speaker 3: and then they go straight to film and then they're
- 47:09Speaker 3: ready for the next film session and then they walk
- 47:12Speaker 3: through so they're kind of getting getting their barriers, and
- 47:14Speaker 3: then you get a little break after that dinner time
- 47:17Speaker 3: you can kind of meander a little bit more and
- 47:19Speaker 3: take your time off, get get off your feet. Then
- 47:22Speaker 3: you have evening meetings, night meetings, and then you break
- 47:26Speaker 3: down for the night. You have team snack at the end,
- 47:28Speaker 3: and then it's it's rinse and repeat for the next day.
- 47:31Speaker 3: Because that's how the schedule is dictated now the new
- 47:33Speaker 3: collective bargaining agreement maximize the off time, so maximize off
- 47:38Speaker 3: the feet time. But you definitely can't take a nap.
- 47:40Speaker 3: The nap time is gone. It usually was in the
- 47:42Speaker 3: mornings before the one pm practices with Mike Taiban, but
- 47:44Speaker 3: now with that eleven am you got a seven am
- 47:48Speaker 3: wake up call and you're you're at it early morning meetings,
- 47:52Speaker 3: walkthroughs in the gym, then you get a break to
- 47:56Speaker 3: grab like your lift in. And also I'll also say this,
- 47:59Speaker 3: if you didn't get your lift in in the morning,
- 48:01Speaker 3: which a lot of vet's usually like to get their
- 48:02Speaker 3: lift ins in the morning, you then come in the
- 48:04Speaker 3: afternoon after practice, get a quick little thirty minute lift,
- 48:07Speaker 3: then go eat, then get a little off time, and
- 48:10Speaker 3: then go to meetings quickly.
- 48:11Speaker 2: What did you prefer when it came to the lifting,
- 48:13Speaker 2: Lifting in the morning or.
- 48:14Speaker 3: Get it out the way. Yeah, I get it out
- 48:15Speaker 3: the way. I don't. I don't want to think about
- 48:18Speaker 3: it now. Now it's a different story. It's whenever I'm
- 48:20Speaker 3: literally feeling language is almost never. But but yeah, back
- 48:24Speaker 3: in the day, it was get the early morning lift
- 48:25Speaker 3: because I want to. I wanted that out of the way,
- 48:27Speaker 3: cause especially on two days, like I don't want to
- 48:29Speaker 3: have to try and lift in between padded practices, Like
- 48:32Speaker 3: that's just a recipe for disaster. Some guys love that
- 48:34Speaker 3: James Harrison couldn't get them out of the gym, But me, no,
- 48:37Speaker 3: get it in the morning, get get it done. Yeah,
- 48:39Speaker 3: I'm with you.
- 48:40Speaker 2: I'm a morning person too, you get your work, and
- 48:42Speaker 2: Mike McCarthy's a morning person too. That's why they start
- 48:45Speaker 2: seven thirty in the morning for a lot of their
- 48:47Speaker 2: team meetings before they get into their practices here at
- 48:50Speaker 2: eleven o'clock. As he said at the beginning of this camp,
- 48:53Speaker 2: I like to get my work in early and then
- 48:55Speaker 2: ease out as the day goes on. So I'm with
- 48:57Speaker 2: you there as well more whenever we come back here
- 49:00Speaker 2: in the locker room with Max Stark's am Ed Troop
- 49:02Speaker 2: and for Rob King, It's day eight, continuing coverage of
- 49:05Speaker 2: Pittsburgh Steelers training Camp twenty twenty six right here on
- 49:09Speaker 2: Steelers Nation Radio and the Steelers Audio Network.
