Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schreger is a production of the
• 0:09
Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. What's Up, Everybody, Welcome to
• 0:25
Speaker 1: another episode of the Peter Schreger Podcast. A little later
• 0:28
Speaker 1: in the week than usual. And there's a reason for that.
• 0:30
Speaker 1: I was traveling on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday in Los Angeles.
• 0:36
Speaker 1: I cannot share the reason why yet, Aaron, my producer,
• 0:42
Speaker 1: Aaron wankoffin, Does that get you intrigued that I have
• 0:44
Speaker 1: to be talk secret about this?
• 0:46
  Speaker 2: Yeah?
• 0:47
Speaker 3: I don't. I mean my nice share my eyes were
• 0:50
Speaker 3: as big as dinner plates there. I mean that that's
• 0:53
Speaker 3: like the oldest person phrase I've ever used.
• 0:55
Speaker 1: I think, just as old as my eyes were as
• 0:57
Speaker 1: wide as dinner plates.
• 1:00
  Speaker 2: Can't share?
• 1:01
Speaker 1: Is that some teas?
• 1:03
  Speaker 2: Yeah?
• 1:04
Speaker 3: Well I'm speechless. Yeah, okay, I'm going to speculate.
• 1:10
Speaker 1: I'm going to give you two things honest cannot share
• 1:13
Speaker 1: why And here is things signed paperwork saying I cannot
• 1:20
Speaker 1: talk about what went down in Los Angeles. Number two,
• 1:26
Speaker 1: not NFL related? Is your head going nuts? Are your
• 1:33
Speaker 1: eyes as wide as dinners?
• 1:36
Speaker 3: They're they're larger than serving balls. Now not NFL related.
• 1:41
Speaker 1: We don't need to guess let's just go Okay. So
• 1:43
Speaker 1: I get to LA on Sunday. And the reason I
• 1:48
Speaker 1: was flying out was because of something that was going
• 1:50
Speaker 1: on on Monday. And as I'm with my family and
• 1:56
Speaker 1: one of the last weekends we'll have together as a
• 1:58
Speaker 1: family unit before I start trekking off to Los Angeles
• 2:01
Speaker 1: every weekend for Fox. The people who were flying me in,
• 2:06
Speaker 1: so someone else paid for this flight so it is professional,
• 2:09
Speaker 1: said can you come in Saturday because the worst hurricane
• 2:14
Speaker 1: to hit Los Angeles in over one hundred years is
• 2:17
Speaker 1: coming and we want to make sure your flight's not canceled.
• 2:21
Speaker 1: I rolled the dice. I said, Nope, I'm getting my Saturday.
• 2:24
Speaker 1: I'm staying with my family. My son had baseball in
• 2:27
Speaker 1: the morning, then we went to the driving range. Later
• 2:32
Speaker 1: we had a great All American Saturday. And I'm like,
• 2:34
Speaker 1: I'm doing it a flyout Sunday morning. Flyout Sunday morning,
• 2:38
Speaker 1: get on the plane, and you would think it's mass
• 2:41
Speaker 1: hysteria on this plane of all the LA people who
• 2:44
Speaker 1: are on this plane, Like, am I gonna get home?
• 2:46
  Speaker 2: Okay?
• 2:46
Speaker 1: And I'm not minimizing it because I was nervous too.
• 2:48
  Speaker 1: I'm like, wait, we're flying through a hurricane. They're like,
• 2:50
Speaker 1: we're flying through a hurricane. Let's roll take off. We
• 2:54
Speaker 1: get in and it's pouring rain. It's the rain is legit.
• 2:57
Speaker 1: But you know we live in here. I am a
• 2:59
Speaker 1: tough guy in New York, Bravado. I live in New York.
• 3:01
Speaker 1: Like well that like the rainstorm, eternal local news and
• 3:07
Speaker 1: they've got all the local correspondents out there and there,
• 3:10
Speaker 1: you know, the biggest weather event. Da fine. As I'm
• 3:14
Speaker 1: sitting there pooh poohing this hurricane quote unquote, the entire
• 3:20
Speaker 1: hotel room just goes. I'm like, what. I look to
• 3:26
Speaker 1: my left. I've got a little lamp on a nightstand.
• 3:30
Speaker 1: It shook. There's a pen on the nightstand. The pen
• 3:34
Speaker 1: fell off the nightstand. I'm like, holy crap, that was
• 3:38
Speaker 1: an earthquake, Aaron, I was in an earthquake.
• 3:42
Speaker 3: Had you been in one before? Or is this your
• 3:44
  Speaker 3: first earthquake?
• 3:45
Speaker 1: I've been in one before, but I didn't necessarily feel it.
• 3:49
Speaker 1: This one was legit, this one, and like, what's your
• 3:52
Speaker 1: first inclination? Like, what do you do if you're so?
• 3:55
Speaker 1: The first thing I do if this tell everyone tells
• 3:57
Speaker 1: you that Twitter's dead and Elon musk is awful and
• 3:59
Speaker 1: all this stuff. Ignore them, because the very first thing
• 4:02
Speaker 1: I did in a natural disaster was to run to
• 4:05
Speaker 1: my phone on Twitter, and sure enough, every single LA
• 4:09
Speaker 1: person on my Twitter was like, they don't feel that,
• 4:11
Speaker 1: they don't feel that. It was a five point one,
• 4:15
Speaker 1: which sounds legit. I'm not a Richter scale guy. I
• 4:18
Speaker 1: can tell you about the wonder Lick test. I don't
• 4:21
Speaker 1: know about the Richter scale tests. But it was legit.
• 4:25
Speaker 1: And it was a hurricane and an earthquake all at
• 4:28
Speaker 1: the same time. And the jokes were hilarious because i mean,
• 4:32
Speaker 1: first of all, I thought it was kind of cool
• 4:34
Speaker 1: to be in an earthquake. It felt kind of crazy
• 4:36
Speaker 1: and you have no control, so it's like being on
• 4:38
Speaker 1: a roller coaster without knowing when it's gonna end. It ended.
• 4:40
Speaker 1: I survived, It was all right. But the jokes were
• 4:45
Speaker 1: like this and this has like series finale vibes. That
• 4:49
Speaker 1: was one of the jokes, and I laughed, I'm like,
• 4:51
Speaker 1: like the end of the world vibes.
• 4:53
  Speaker 2: That was it.
• 4:53
Speaker 1: The other one was, you know, there's a writer's strike
• 4:57
Speaker 1: when you're getting a hurricane and an earthquake in one episode.
• 5:00
Speaker 1: I'm like, Uh, it was nuts. So then it was
• 5:05
Speaker 1: raining throughout Sunday night Monday, I do it. I was
• 5:10
Speaker 1: there for whatever, and then I got a flight that's
• 5:14
Speaker 1: gonna be, you know, either a red eye or a
• 5:17
Speaker 1: Tuesday morning and they asked me like, what would you ratherfy.
• 5:20
  Speaker 1: I was like, I changed my plans. I'm like, I'll
• 5:22
Speaker 1: go Tuesday morning. I text Cliff Kingsbury, who's the former
• 5:27
Speaker 1: coach of the Arizona Cardinals, who if you listen to
• 5:30
Speaker 1: this podcast, you know, is one of my good buds,
• 5:32
Speaker 1: and I'm like, dude, I'm in LA. He's now. It's funny.
• 5:36
Speaker 1: He's an offensive consultant for USC. So he's working with
• 5:40
Speaker 1: Caleb Williams, who's the Heisman Trophy winner, and he's working
• 5:43
Speaker 1: with the head coach, Lincoln Riley, who they have a
• 5:46
Speaker 1: ten year friendship. And Cliff's whole deal is basically, I'm
• 5:51
Speaker 1: gonna work with these players. I'm gonna do everything I
• 5:53
Speaker 1: can to be the quarterback whisper. He's not looking to
• 5:57
Speaker 1: be on the road in Tallahassee and recruiting for USC.
• 6:01
Speaker 1: So he's like the football coach. When from what I
• 6:04
Speaker 1: gather in college football, and we had Matt Ruhl on
• 6:06
Speaker 1: and we're gonna have another coach on today. It's a
• 6:08
Speaker 1: lot more than just coaching football when to the head coach.
• 6:11
Speaker 1: For Cliff, he's doing that. But I'm like, all right,
• 6:13
Speaker 1: I'm going out with Cliffe's he's out. He's living in LA.
• 6:17
Speaker 1: He lives in a sick pad. I went there. I
• 6:19
Speaker 1: was like, all right, this is pretty cool. And then
• 6:21
Speaker 1: we're going out to go get dinner. And we go
• 6:23
Speaker 1: get dinner and we go locally to where he lives.
• 6:26
Speaker 1: He's living in downtown LA. And we go to a
• 6:29
Speaker 1: spot and we're having dinner and sure enough, someone comes
• 6:34
Speaker 1: up and comes to the table and I'm like, all right, yeah,
• 6:37
Speaker 1: they recognize Cliff. And Aaron Dude is like, are you
• 6:41
Speaker 1: Shraker from the NFL network. I'm like yeah. He's like,
• 6:43
Speaker 1: you get a selfie with me. I'm like yeah, so
• 6:46
Speaker 1: I'm getting selfie's taken and La Cliff is just watching.
• 6:49
Speaker 1: I think Cliff took the photo for him.
• 6:53
Speaker 3: Did he ask you for your fantasy advice?
• 6:56
Speaker 1: And his yeah, exactly. I said, get out of here.
• 7:01
Speaker 1: The love was real, felt great. Went to the airport
• 7:04
Speaker 1: the next morning, flew back and my family they're not around,
• 7:08
Speaker 1: so my wife and my two kids. We rented a
• 7:12
Speaker 1: spot in Long Island and they're they're out there for
• 7:15
Speaker 1: the last week here. Okay, so then I'm home alone
• 7:18
Speaker 1: and Tuesday night whatever, get home, No big deal. Actually
• 7:23
Speaker 1: watched a movie. Watched the movie that Rogers recommended in
• 7:27
Speaker 1: our interview. I watched The Proceige. I'd never seen it. Okay,
• 7:31
Speaker 1: it was great, it was great. Watched it, and then
• 7:33
Speaker 1: watch the YouTube explainer afterwards to this, like put it
• 7:36
Speaker 1: all together, too awesome, But that's not important. Wednesday, do
• 7:39
Speaker 1: good Morning Football. All this news comes out in the
• 7:42
Speaker 1: NFL on Wednesday, and I think maybe I'll hit it
• 7:46
Speaker 1: up in a little bit. We'll get to it, but
• 7:48
Speaker 1: I want to get to this part. I'm going to
• 7:50
Speaker 1: take it easy. Wednesday night. This happens. This is why
• 7:53
Speaker 1: I live in New York City, and why every other
• 7:56
Speaker 1: city you might live in if you're listening, is a
• 7:58
Speaker 1: second tier place to live, and why I don't live
• 8:01
Speaker 1: in the suburbs. And every night I stare at my
• 8:03
Speaker 1: mortgage and I stare at the costs of of everything
• 8:06
Speaker 1: in New York City, and I look outside my window
• 8:08
Speaker 1: and I see some unsavory things. I'm like, why do
• 8:10
Speaker 1: I do this? Why do I do this? Why do
• 8:12
Speaker 1: I do this? It's nights like this. Wednesday night, I
• 8:17
Speaker 1: got a text from a dude named Adam, who I'm
• 8:22
Speaker 1: not best buds with, but our kids were on the
• 8:25
Speaker 1: same flag football team together and he knows I do
• 8:28
Speaker 1: this for a living. He's a diehard Vikings fan. Adam's cool.
• 8:31
Speaker 1: His kid Jack is a nice little wide receiver. Adam
• 8:34
Speaker 1: texts me out of the blue, like, again, we've never
• 8:36
Speaker 1: hung out socially, but like we're on the sidelines together
• 8:39
Speaker 1: and he's cool. He's like, Yo, I've got two great
• 8:44
Speaker 1: all access tickets to Dave Chappelle at the Garden if
• 8:49
Speaker 1: you want to go. And I'm like, oh my god,
• 8:52
Speaker 1: Chappelle at the Garden. Now, if you're not familiar, Chappelle's
• 8:54
Speaker 1: at the Garden for like a five night's day and
• 8:58
Speaker 1: Chappelle is bringing on musical ass. Last night was his
• 9:01
Speaker 1: birthday show. And I'll get to who performed all that
• 9:06
Speaker 1: in a second. And I'm like, I want to go
• 9:09
Speaker 1: to that. I am exhausted. I really want to go
• 9:12
Speaker 1: to that. I'm exhausted. Talk to my wife Erica and
• 9:14
Speaker 1: she's like, look, you got the season coming up. You've
• 9:19
Speaker 1: got travel like up to you. If you really need
• 9:22
Speaker 1: to go to Chappelle, you know it's gonna go to
• 9:24
Speaker 1: one in the morning. Do you really need to do that?
• 9:26
Speaker 1: Do you want to do that? And I'm like, I
• 9:28
Speaker 1: kind of do And then I'm like, all right, cooler
• 9:31
Speaker 1: heads prevail. I'm gonna say no, Aaron, I don't go Chappelle.
• 9:37
Speaker 1: Last Night, John Stewart, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, The Roots,
• 9:44
Speaker 1: The Baby, nas Day, Lass Soul, Jeff Ross, The Roastmaster, Earthquake,
• 9:52
Speaker 1: one of the great comedians of all time, and I'm
• 9:55
Speaker 1: probably missing one other musical act all performed. It went
• 10:00
Speaker 1: to one am. And I'll tell you this, I made
• 10:03
Speaker 1: the right decision. Oh there's a second chapter to my night.
• 10:09
Speaker 1: I'm sitting on the couch, it's six o'clock and my
• 10:13
Speaker 1: guy Andy reaches out to me. Who's Andy? Who are
• 10:17
Speaker 1: these people? Andy works for the Brooklyn Nets. Andy's kid
• 10:23
Speaker 1: is with my kid in basketball. And Andy texts me
• 10:27
Speaker 1: and says, hey, late, notice I know, but I've got
• 10:33
Speaker 1: a table at Lukalli, which is the hottest spot in
• 10:40
Speaker 1: New York, a pizza place in Brooklyn that does pizza
• 10:43
Speaker 1: and cal zones. But is like, you go there at
• 10:47
Speaker 1: three o'clock to the line one hundred deep, they only
• 10:49
Speaker 1: see a few people. There's like four tables. I've been
• 10:52
Speaker 1: there twice in my life and I live in Brooklyn
• 10:54
Speaker 1: a block away. It's like, do you want to join
• 10:58
Speaker 1: my two friends and I or you know, do you
• 11:01
Speaker 1: want to come to Lucali? And now it's seven o'clock.
• 11:05
Speaker 1: I just said no to Chappelle. I've got the mess
• 11:07
Speaker 1: shorts on, i got the T shirt on. I'm all
• 11:09
Speaker 1: set to watch, you know, Wheel of Fortune and then
• 11:13
Speaker 1: maybe you know, just watch a rerun of like Big
• 11:16
Speaker 1: Bang Theory. I was set. I was feeling good about
• 11:18
Speaker 1: that situation. I got the invite to luc Collie Aaron,
• 11:21
Speaker 1: I'm like, all right, let's go. I meet him. We
• 11:25
Speaker 1: head over to Lucali. Line is fifty deep. He works
• 11:29
Speaker 1: for the Nets. We walked to the front. Naturally, there's
• 11:33
Speaker 1: a group in front who know him from the Brooklyn Nets.
• 11:36
Speaker 1: There's a couple of people in their marketing department. We
• 11:39
Speaker 1: tap it up with them. It's great. Whatever Mark comes
• 11:42
Speaker 1: out who runs Lukali legendary guy. If you watch Netflix
• 11:48
Speaker 1: the David Chang series where they go to the different
• 11:51
Speaker 1: like restaurants and what was it called.
• 11:53
Speaker 3: Even though we're at acid Heat.
• 11:55
Speaker 1: I think might have been the one before that. He
• 11:57
Speaker 1: had a series before that. Maybe David Chang did where
• 11:59
Speaker 1: like they would go to different countries Ugly Delicious. Yes,
• 12:04
Speaker 1: it was like him and his ease right, they go
• 12:06
Speaker 1: to like another country with Mark from Lucali Mark Lukali.
• 12:11
Speaker 1: If you don't know, google it. It's you know, jay
• 12:13
Speaker 1: Z's there all the time, Beyonce is there all the time.
• 12:16
Speaker 1: It's a spot in Brooklyn. And the pizza is unreal,
• 12:18
Speaker 1: Like I would love to pooh poo it and say,
• 12:19
Speaker 1: like the pizza's not good, pizza's unreal. Cal zones are insane.
• 12:23
Speaker 3: Have you been ar I have not, but I mean
• 12:24
Speaker 3: I've heard about it.
• 12:25
Speaker 1: Yeah, And like people, it's an Instagram thing. You line
• 12:27
Speaker 1: up one hundred deep and like they let in four people.
• 12:30
Speaker 1: But for whatever reason, Andy's got an extra I think
• 12:34
  Speaker 1: I'm a fill in spot. I'm in Andy and I
• 12:36
Speaker 1: don't hang like we're very friendly through the kids, and
• 12:39
Speaker 1: he's got sports connections. But I'm like, hell, yeah, I'll
• 12:42
Speaker 1: go out with you. We're having a blast. It's bring
• 12:44
Speaker 1: your own wine. We're kicking it. We got a great table.
• 12:47
Speaker 1: I walk in and there's like a buzz in the air.
• 12:50
Speaker 1: There's a little buzz in the air, and I'm like,
• 12:52
Speaker 1: all right, what's going on here?
• 12:54
  Speaker 2: Oh?
• 12:54
Speaker 1: At that table is this rapper who was there? I
• 12:58
Speaker 1: don't even know who it was. Fine, Okay, that's in
• 13:00
Speaker 1: one corner. Now listen, there's only like four or five
• 13:02
Speaker 1: tables at that table. It's Jeffrey Katzenberg, who used to,
• 13:07
Speaker 1: you know, run dream Works and now is on his own,
• 13:11
Speaker 1: but like Disney legend, was a chairman of Disney for
• 13:14
Speaker 1: thirty years. He's got a table, he entertaining people. I'm like,
• 13:16
Speaker 1: all right, this is a power room right now. Us
• 13:19
Speaker 1: opens going on, and there's rumors that Fetterer was gonna
• 13:23
Speaker 1: come through. I'm like, oh, if I met fed that
• 13:24
Speaker 1: would be great, that would be pretty cool. And then
• 13:27
Speaker 1: all of a sudden, door swings open. Shaggy haired guy
• 13:32
Speaker 1: New York Yankees hat hugs Mark. The owner goes up,
• 13:37
Speaker 1: DAPs up. Katzenberg looks me right in the eye, and
• 13:39
Speaker 1: the guy's like, oh, what's up? Man hug him and
• 13:43
Speaker 1: I'm like, what's up, dude. We exchange quick pleasantries, no
• 13:47
Speaker 1: names exchange, so there's not one hundred percent confidence that
• 13:50
Speaker 1: he knows who I was, but he definitely recognized me.
• 13:53
  Speaker 1: Tap it up.
• 13:54
  Speaker 2: Talk.
• 13:54
Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, I heard you're new in the neighborhood.
• 13:56
Speaker 1: Ah just moved in. Love it here. It's unbelievable. It's
• 13:59
Speaker 1: great British Ed Sheeran, awesome. Ed Shearan cool as hell,
• 14:06
Speaker 1: talks to everyone in the restaurant, dabs it up whatever
• 14:09
Speaker 1: sits right there, right next to us. We're talking throughout
• 14:12
Speaker 1: the dinner. Ed Shearon is just in a This is
• 14:15
Speaker 1: literally a week after Ed Sheeron did a show out
• 14:18
Speaker 1: in Emma Gans at New York, where Howard Stern was there,
• 14:23
Speaker 1: Jerry Seinfeld was there, Sir Paul McCartney was there, Billy
• 14:25
Speaker 1: Joel was there, and now Shearon we're just in the
• 14:28
Speaker 1: same dining room. And it was the night like this
• 14:30
Speaker 1: where I look over at Andy and I'm like, yeah,
• 14:32
Speaker 1: that's why we live in New York. It's happened on
• 14:33
Speaker 1: a random Wednesday, and I was gonna be sitting on
• 14:35
Speaker 1: my home watching mad Men reruns, or maybe watching Two
• 14:38
Speaker 1: and a half Men, or maybe watching Suits for the
• 14:41
Speaker 1: thirteenth time on Netflix. The pizza was great. The col
• 14:45
Speaker 1: Zone was great, the company was great. We had a
• 14:47
Speaker 1: great time hanging and Eddie Shearon was great. Aaron your thoughts.
• 14:52
Speaker 3: I mean, my takeaway from this is I very quickly
• 14:55
Speaker 3: need to have children and get them on a sports
• 14:56
Speaker 3: team that has great dads who will invite to other things.
• 15:01
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 15:01
Speaker 1: Right, So we didn't do Chappelle, but I did get
• 15:05
Speaker 1: to have one of the cool dinners I've had in
• 15:08
Speaker 1: quite some time. And maybe the lead up to ed
• 15:11
Speaker 1: sharan'ce not what the listeners want to hear. Maybe they're like, oh,
• 15:13
Speaker 1: I thought you were gonna say Tom Brady, or oh
• 15:15
Speaker 1: I thought you were gonna say Elon musk At. Sharon
• 15:19
Speaker 1: just cool like the man. It was awesome and that
• 15:23
Speaker 1: was fun. So that was the last few days. I
• 15:25
Speaker 1: cannot share while I was in LA, but I can
• 15:28
Speaker 1: share this. I did. What do you got?
• 15:30
Speaker 3: Will you share it later?
• 15:32
Speaker 2: Okay? Cool? Yes? Cool?
• 15:34
Speaker 3: So we will find out at some point.
• 15:36
Speaker 1: Yes, in a few weeks I will share amazing. It's
• 15:39
Speaker 1: just cool. It's it's freaking cool. And that's all real quick.
• 15:44
Speaker 1: Some football thoughts before we get to our guests, because
• 15:48
Speaker 1: I think if you don't listen to every single podcast,
• 15:52
Speaker 1: you don't watch every single day. You might miss some
• 15:54
Speaker 1: of these in the Cracks headlines, and I've got good
• 15:56
Speaker 1: insight on them. I'm sure you saw obviously that Trey
• 16:00
Speaker 1: Lance has been named the number three in San Francisco.
• 16:03
Speaker 1: My takeaway on that was Donald beat them out right
• 16:06
Speaker 1: for that. And this is a Super Bowl contender, and
• 16:09
Speaker 1: John and Kyle John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan, if they
• 16:11
Speaker 1: were in a different situation, maybe Trey Lance is given
• 16:15
Speaker 1: the second job because he was an number three overall
• 16:17
Speaker 1: pick and they traded a million first round picks to
• 16:19
Speaker 1: get him. But this is like, no, like, we're here
• 16:22
Speaker 1: for this team in rock Perty, I could tell you
• 16:25
Speaker 1: is far and away the number one, like performed better
• 16:29
Speaker 1: than them in camp. Everyone in the the locker room
• 16:31
Speaker 1: believes it. So then it goes to who's the number two?
• 16:34
Speaker 1: Donald out played Trey and they're going with Donald. Now,
• 16:37
Speaker 1: remember Donald's another number three overall pick, so it's not
• 16:40
Speaker 1: like you're dealing with some great shame to lose out
• 16:43
Speaker 1: to him. Donald signed a real contract this offseason and
• 16:47
Speaker 1: Donald's played in real NFL games. So the way they're
• 16:50
Speaker 1: running this offense with Party, it sounds like Kyle and
• 16:53
Speaker 1: the guys there in San Francisco, were like, if our
• 16:56
Speaker 1: guy goes down, who gives a better chance to win?
• 16:59
Speaker 1: And who's in a better position for us to win?
• 17:01
Speaker 1: And the answer is with this current offense, the party offense,
• 17:04
Speaker 1: Sam Donald. So now you're wondering what to make of
• 17:07
Speaker 1: Trey Lance. Trey Lance has already made close to and
• 17:10
Speaker 1: I might be exactly, I gotta get that exact. I
• 17:12
Speaker 1: think he's made close to thirty million dollars already being
• 17:16
Speaker 1: a safety to go forty nine er for three years.
• 17:18
Speaker 1: He still has a pretty big contract. He's number three
• 17:20
Speaker 1: overall pick. It's not like a crazy contract before the
• 17:23
Speaker 1: CBA where the rookies made nuts money. But it's still
• 17:26
Speaker 1: a big contract. So it's not like you're just gonna
• 17:29
Speaker 1: trade him for a fifth round pick and that be done.
• 17:31
Speaker 1: The other team needs to want to take on that contract.
• 17:34
Speaker 1: Problem is there's no evidence that Trey Lance is that guy.
• 17:38
Speaker 1: You'd have to go back to your pre draft notebooks.
• 17:40
Speaker 1: And I've talked to teams, talked to several teams over
• 17:43
Speaker 1: the last forty eight hours, and I'm like, would you
• 17:45
Speaker 1: trade for Trey Lance? And it's like, I don't know
• 17:49
Speaker 1: what Trey Lance is and if the Niners are deeming
• 17:51
Speaker 1: him third on the depth chart behind Sam Darnold, who
• 17:54
Speaker 1: we passed on signing, I don't know if I'm rushing
• 17:57
Speaker 1: to get Trey Lance. So he might end up getting
• 18:00
Speaker 1: traded for like a fifth, sixth or seventh round pick
• 18:03
Speaker 1: on a team that might want to take And the
• 18:07
Speaker 1: natural fit would be the Minnesota Vikings, and that Kirk
• 18:10
Speaker 1: Cousins is in the final year of a contract and
• 18:11
Speaker 1: they don't have a true runaway number two that you're like,
• 18:15
Speaker 1: slam dunk that's their number two guy. Also, Trey Lance
• 18:18
Speaker 1: is from Minnesota. Trey Lance was drafted by the forty
• 18:23
Speaker 1: nine ers, and that front office contains contained at the
• 18:28
Speaker 1: time Kuaisia Dofo Mensa, who put a lot of work
• 18:30
Speaker 1: in who is now the Vikings GM. But I don't
• 18:34
Speaker 1: you're not going to do it as a charity, like
• 18:36
Speaker 1: they have to want him. So the Trey Lance watch
• 18:40
Speaker 1: is really interesting, and I think my big takeaway on
• 18:43
Speaker 1: it is just how fed up the draft process is.
• 18:46
Speaker 1: Like they traded two future first round picks and moved
• 18:51
Speaker 1: up from number twelve to number three to get a
• 18:53
Speaker 1: player that is number three on their depth chart two
• 18:55
Speaker 1: years later, and because they've built such a good team
• 18:58
Speaker 1: around them, Like no one's calling for John Lynch's head,
• 19:01
Speaker 1: no one's saying like this is the greatest draft miss
• 19:04
Speaker 1: of all time. It just is what it is. And
• 19:07
Speaker 1: Trey Lance is the number three. My other point is this,
• 19:11
Speaker 1: Zach Wilson was number two. So the Jets before them
• 19:14
Speaker 1: did the same exact thing and whiffed on a pick
• 19:17
Speaker 1: and it didn't work out right away and had to
• 19:18
Speaker 1: make a drastic move trading picks and giving a monster
• 19:24
Speaker 1: salary and trying to cover up that with a band
• 19:26
Speaker 1: aid and getting Aaron Rodgers for the number two and
• 19:29
Speaker 1: three overall picks to be Zach Wilson, whose image is
• 19:32
Speaker 1: going through a great rehab this summer, and these hard
• 19:35
Speaker 1: knocks clips, they make them seem like he's Rogers's little brother,
• 19:37
Speaker 1: and like, aw shucks, guess what Zach Wilson's making, something like,
• 19:40
Speaker 1: you know, second overall money, it's real money that could
• 19:43
Speaker 1: pay in him. Zach went to Trey Lance went three,
• 19:48
Speaker 1: And nobody would look at either of those teams, the
• 19:50
Speaker 1: Jets and forty nine ers, and look at their GMS
• 19:52
Speaker 1: and say, gosh, those guys messed up. Because both teams
• 19:55
Speaker 1: are in really good position right now, real quick. Some
• 19:59
Speaker 1: other housekeeping around the NFL, Josh Jacobs's name keeps popping
• 20:02
Speaker 1: up as far as trade rumors. I'm not sure if
• 20:06
Speaker 1: I see Josh Jacob's being traded. Jonathan Taylor's name keeps
• 20:09
  Speaker 1: being brought up.
• 20:11
  Speaker 2: Now.
• 20:11
Speaker 1: I don't know what Jonathan Taylor wants. Jonathan Taylor, from
• 20:14
Speaker 1: what I'm told, wants a new contract and it might
• 20:16
Speaker 1: blow the contracts out of the water that we saw
• 20:19
Speaker 1: Dalvin Cook and zekev and potentially Saquon blow with those
• 20:23
Speaker 1: guys out of the water what he wants. But I
• 20:25
Speaker 1: would keep an eye on Miami in the past when
• 20:27
Speaker 1: Miami does these fishing around explorations, and whether it be
• 20:31
Speaker 1: Tyreek Hill or Bradley Chubb last year, sometimes there's more
• 20:35
Speaker 1: smoke than fire. It wasn't with Dalvin Cook. It turned
• 20:39
Speaker 1: out Dalvin Cook was a free agent and signed with
• 20:40
Speaker 1: to the Jets, and that's all good. Jonathan Taylor is
• 20:44
Speaker 1: a superstar. And if the Miami Dolphins add Jonathan Taylor
• 20:47
Speaker 1: to that offense, it already has Tyreek and Waddle and
• 20:51
Speaker 1: we we'd hope to have a healthy Tua that could
• 20:53
Speaker 1: be lethal I would keep an eye on the Miami
• 20:55
Speaker 1: Dolphins as much as Jim Mersey says, like, we're not
• 20:59
Speaker 1: looking to trade Jonathan Taylor. He's at camp. He's there,
• 21:05
Speaker 1: he's just not playing, and he apparently wants to dig
• 21:10
Speaker 1: in with ten toes. Down lengthy monologue. We have an
• 21:14
Speaker 1: awesome guest. He's been a friend of mine for a
• 21:16
Speaker 1: real long time and I'm so happy for his success
• 21:18
Speaker 1: and his football program is on the rise. We're going
• 21:21
Speaker 1: to bring in Jed Fish to coach the Arizona Wildcats
• 21:24
Speaker 1: right after this. Our next guest is a longtime friend
• 21:31
Speaker 1: of mine and a longtime coach in the NFL who
• 21:33
Speaker 1: is now a very established college football head coach and
• 21:37
Speaker 1: his program is on the rise. I'm so happy he's
• 21:40
Speaker 1: joining the podcast, especially right now where the college football
• 21:43
Speaker 1: season is just kicking off. Jed Fish, Welcome to the
• 21:46
Speaker 1: Peter Schrager The Season with Peter Schrager Podcast.
• 21:50
Speaker 2: I love it. Thanks for having me, man, It's great
• 21:52
Speaker 2: to see you and great to be a part of this.
• 21:54
Speaker 1: Yeah. You and I I was thinking I was last night.
• 21:56
Speaker 1: I was preparing for this and I'm like, when did
• 21:57
Speaker 1: I first meet you? It was actually at the Senior Bowl,
• 22:00
Speaker 1: and I think like twenty thirteen, you were the OC
• 22:03
Speaker 1: for the Jacksonville Jaguars, and of coaches who do not
• 22:07
Speaker 1: give a hit about me, you were like, what's up, man,
• 22:10
Speaker 1: what's up? Like what do you want to talk about?
• 22:11
Speaker 1: Let's talk, let's go through the list, like whatever. And
• 22:12
Speaker 1: you were cool to me then and we've been friends
• 22:14
Speaker 1: ever since. And now I see you as the coach
• 22:16
Speaker 1: of Arizona in this hot program that everyone's talking about
• 22:19
Speaker 1: and just straight up from the top. Couldn't be happier
• 22:21
  Speaker 1: for you. Man.
• 22:21
Speaker 2: Well, I appreciate that, man, And I remember I remember.
• 22:24
Speaker 2: I think our friend Tony Sorrentino was the one that
• 22:26
Speaker 2: introduced us. And you know, his dad was my high
• 22:29
Speaker 2: school coach, and I brought up to about three different
• 22:31
Speaker 2: places throughout my spots and he's doing great now with
• 22:35
Speaker 2: the Vikings. But it was great to meet you then,
• 22:37
Speaker 2: and obviously we've had so many opportunities to be together
• 22:40
Speaker 2: throughout the year, so it's been great. Yeah.
• 22:42
Speaker 1: So if the listeners are like I know that name
• 22:44
Speaker 1: and I remember him on this team or that team,
• 22:46
Speaker 1: I thought this would be a cool exercise because we
• 22:48
Speaker 1: always talk about the life of a coach and what
• 22:51
Speaker 1: that means. And some coaches are fortunate to be in
• 22:55
Speaker 1: the same place for twenty years and that's it. And
• 22:57
Speaker 1: other coaches are going up the ladder and constantly, you know,
• 23:02
Speaker 1: being forced to uproot their families but also tackle new opportunities.
• 23:05
Speaker 1: I think you're coaching resume might be the most fascinating
• 23:08
Speaker 1: coaching resume in the history of the sports edit. And
• 23:11
Speaker 1: I say that because you're my friend, and I know
• 23:15
Speaker 1: when you're like, I'm actually getting an opportunity here or here,
• 23:17
Speaker 1: and I'm like, God, add that to the list, can
• 23:19
Speaker 1: you fit? Listeners, take us through your resume, starting with
• 23:23
Speaker 1: your first gig out of college when you went to
• 23:25
Speaker 1: the University of Florida.
• 23:27
  Speaker 2: Sure, yeah, I mean it's certainly unique. I don't know
• 23:30
Speaker 2: how much time we have, but I know the biggest
• 23:32
Speaker 2: thing for me is every decision that I made in
• 23:36
  Speaker 2: coaching was I didn't believe I was just a teacher,
• 23:39
Speaker 2: but I believe I was also a student throughout my
• 23:42
Speaker 2: all of my decisions. So you know, I got the
• 23:45
Speaker 2: University of Florida, and I went there to learn how
• 23:47
Speaker 2: to coach football. That was the only reason why I
• 23:49
Speaker 2: chose Florida. Steve Spurrier was the head coach. He was
• 23:52
Speaker 2: the best in my opinion, and probably there wasn't really
• 23:55
Speaker 2: an opinion at that point in the nineties that he
• 23:58
Speaker 2: was the best college coach in the country. And I said,
• 24:00
Speaker 2: I'm going to figure out a way to get work
• 24:01
Speaker 2: from for him. And whatever it took. It took everything
• 24:05
Speaker 2: in my power, from notes on his car door to
• 24:09
Speaker 2: trying to become an equipment manager and everything in between
• 24:12
Speaker 2: to finally be allowed in the building and became a
• 24:14
Speaker 2: GA at Florida and was a GA at Florida and
• 24:18
Speaker 2: ninety nine through one, and then after that Dom Capers
• 24:24
Speaker 2: was at Jacksonville and Dom Capers became the head coach
• 24:27
Speaker 2: of the Houston Texas and they started a franchise and
• 24:31
Speaker 2: he called Coach Furrier and he said, Hey, I need
• 24:33
Speaker 2: a GA, someone that I could pay twenty five grand
• 24:37
Speaker 2: to make him a quality control coach who wants to
• 24:39
Speaker 2: learn how to build a program from scratch. And somehow,
• 24:43
Speaker 2: some way, maybe the other ten guys coach Berrier recommended,
• 24:46
Speaker 2: they didn't want to take it, but I got it.
• 24:49
Speaker 2: I interviewed for the job, I got the job and
• 24:52
Speaker 2: spent three years with Coach Capers in Houston and first
• 24:55
Speaker 2: year no team. It was just Dom Capers Christmas.
• 24:59
Speaker 1: Now that's cool. So you had the organ you had
• 25:01
Speaker 1: the franchise, but we still have another year to We're
• 25:02
  Speaker 1: playing games.
• 25:03
Speaker 2: Unbelievable. It was just the coolest thing.
• 25:05
Speaker 1: So you're truly build bilding an expansion franchise.
• 25:07
Speaker 2: I got there in April. We had eight months. We
• 25:11
Speaker 2: had no staff members other than Dom Capers, Chris Palmer
• 25:15
Speaker 2: and myself and Charlie Cashley the GM and I spent
• 25:20
Speaker 2: every Sunday in Don Caper's couch at his house watching
• 25:23
Speaker 2: all the pro football games. I mean, you can't, you
• 25:25
Speaker 2: can't get better. So the year comes to an ad
• 25:28
Speaker 2: and he says, well, what side of the ball do
• 25:29
Speaker 2: you want to be on? Offense or defense? And I said, coach,
• 25:32
Speaker 2: I'm twenty four years old. You tell me what side
• 25:34
Speaker 2: of the ball should I be on? Right now? He said,
• 25:36
Speaker 2: where do you want to finish your career? I said, well,
• 25:37
Speaker 2: I want to be a head coach and offensive coordinator.
• 25:39
Speaker 2: He said, okay, I'm going to put you on defense.
• 25:42
Speaker 1: Yes, let's learn that first.
• 25:43
Speaker 2: Let's learn that first. So Vic Fangio was the defensive
• 25:47
Speaker 2: coordinator and I spent two years as his defensive quality
• 25:50
Speaker 2: control coach, learning it from the studs, truly building it.
• 25:55
Speaker 2: And then after three years, Brian Billick called from Baltimore
• 25:58
Speaker 2: Ravens and David Shaw was on that staff and they
• 26:01
Speaker 2: wanted to hire him.
• 26:02
Speaker 1: Already, these names here, you're mentioning Brian Billick, super bowing
• 26:06
Speaker 1: and coach David Shaw one of the best college coaches
• 26:08
Speaker 1: last twenty years. Dom Caper's basically the godfather of the
• 26:11
Speaker 1: three four defense. I mean, you're just naming names and
• 26:14
Speaker 1: we're just getting started, all right.
• 26:15
Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just wild, you know. And Vic was just
• 26:18
Speaker 2: you know, we all know Vic, like he's the talk
• 26:20
Speaker 2: of the town still, you know. And so I'm with
• 26:24
Speaker 2: coach Billick, and so I take the job, and I
• 26:27
Speaker 2: told coach Caper's, you know, it's time to get on offense.
• 26:29
Speaker 2: This is a chance to get on offense. And spent
• 26:32
Speaker 2: four years with the Ravens and I really thought, you know,
• 26:35
Speaker 2: you mentioned those like coaches that have those long tenures.
• 26:37
Speaker 2: I mean I was twenty seven something like that, twenty
• 26:40
Speaker 2: eight at that time, and I was like, oh, this
• 26:43
Speaker 2: is gonna be great. Four years, five years, we're winning,
• 26:47
Speaker 2: We're thirteen and three. Now I'm the quarterback coach, coach,
• 26:49
Speaker 2: and Steve McNair, you know, this is like this was gold,
• 26:53
Speaker 2: This was gold. And we go thirteen and three and
• 26:56
Speaker 2: oh six. We lose to the Colts in a playoff game,
• 26:59
Speaker 2: fifteen to six. We throw five interceptions, We don't have
• 27:02
Speaker 2: a good game. And the next year we have injury
• 27:05
Speaker 2: after injury from Todd heat to McNair to Jamal to whatever,
• 27:09
Speaker 2: and we get let go at the end of the year.
• 27:11
Speaker 2: And I was in shock and I didn't know anything
• 27:14
Speaker 2: about it. And Mike Shanahan called and Mike Shanahan was
• 27:18
Speaker 2: the as we all know, the head coach of the
• 27:20
Speaker 2: Broncos and offered me the wide receiver coach. So I
• 27:25
Speaker 2: go to Denver. So now pick up the family. We
• 27:27
Speaker 2: go to Denver. But again it's like, I'm going to
• 27:29
Speaker 2: work for Mike Shannan. I'll be here for the next decade.
• 27:32
Speaker 1: I gotta do this, I gotta do it.
• 27:33
Speaker 2: And he's the most stable coaching coaching at that time,
• 27:36
Speaker 2: right Brian got fired up for ten years. Now it's Mike.
• 27:40
Speaker 2: So I go there and it's like, this is gonna
• 27:42
Speaker 2: be great. And I have Brandon Marshall. Yeah, we draft
• 27:45
  Speaker 2: Eddie Royal.
• 27:46
Speaker 1: We draft Eddie Royal, loved Eddie Royle.
• 27:49
Speaker 2: Oh god. Brandon Stokely was our slot and Darryl Jackson,
• 27:53
Speaker 2: who I was with at Florida was our four.
• 27:56
Speaker 1: So I'm like this from Seattle, Sure and Cutler.
• 27:58
Speaker 2: Then we had color right, Okay. So we go to
• 28:01
Speaker 2: Denver and we have the number one offense in the NFL.
• 28:04
Speaker 2: We go eight and five through Game thirteen, and then
• 28:08
Speaker 2: we need to win one or someone needs to lose one,
• 28:11
Speaker 2: and we're in the playoffs. We lose all three and Fluke,
• 28:15
Speaker 2: you know, miss a field goal. I remember.
• 28:18
Speaker 1: I remember the New Year's game. I remember they missed
• 28:20
Speaker 1: the field goal at the end.
• 28:21
Speaker 2: It was crazy, man. So next thing, you know, I'm like,
• 28:24
Speaker 2: all right, well, whatever it is a Nate, We'll got
• 28:26
Speaker 2: to get better next year. And then make a coaching
• 28:29
Speaker 2: change in Denver for the first time in what seventeen years,
• 28:32
Speaker 2: I forget, and I'm like, this is the great one
• 28:34
Speaker 2: of This is one of the iconic coaches in this profession,
• 28:37
  Speaker 2: and as we've.
• 28:38
Speaker 1: Especially synonymous with Denver too, Like you figure he's the
• 28:42
Speaker 1: Supreme Court justice. He decides when he wants to leave.
• 28:44
Speaker 2: Yeah, and as you and I have learned, look at
• 28:46
Speaker 2: his tree, right, I mean, who do you talk to
• 28:48
Speaker 2: all the time, right from Sean to Kyle to Matt
• 28:50
Speaker 2: to you name him, right, they all went through it.
• 28:53
Speaker 2: So but anyway, it winds up opening up. And at
• 28:56
Speaker 2: that time, I'm like, okay, well, now you got to
• 28:58
Speaker 2: figure out what you're gonna do next. And I got
• 29:01
Speaker 2: a call to be the offensive coordinator at the University
• 29:03
Speaker 2: of Minnesota, and I'm like, all right, well done, I've
• 29:06
Speaker 2: paid my dues. I'm now a Big ten offensive coordinator.
• 29:09
Speaker 2: I'm only twenty nine or thirty. At that thirty, I'm like,
• 29:12
Speaker 2: I got to take it. So I go to Minnesota
• 29:15
Speaker 2: coach Eric Decker, coach Adam Weber, get to a bowl game,
• 29:19
Speaker 2: and I'm like, all right, this is sweet. This was fun.
• 29:22
Speaker 2: I loved it, Amber loved it. And my phone rings
• 29:26
Speaker 2: and it's Pete Carroll and I loved Pete's like, hey, Jed,
• 29:33
Speaker 2: Pete Carroll here, I'm like, you know, checking my phone.
• 29:37
Speaker 2: I'm like, let me see this one more time, you know,
• 29:39
Speaker 2: and he goes, I just took the job because he
• 29:41
Speaker 2: was at USC you know forever, you know, and he
• 29:44
Speaker 2: was never leaving and he was in his and he goes,
• 29:46
Speaker 2: I just took the job of the Seattle Seahawks. I
• 29:48
Speaker 2: want you to come here as a quarterback coach. And
• 29:50
Speaker 2: I'm like, all right, Well I got home. I called Amber.
• 29:54
  Speaker 2: I said, I know, I told you we weren't moved,
• 29:56
Speaker 2: and everything's good because it's been like move move now right.
• 30:00
Speaker 2: I'm like, but like, Mount Rushmore just called, you know, seriously,
• 30:05
Speaker 2: I said, the guys, I go, we just left Mike
• 30:08
Speaker 2: a year ago coach, and now the next face on
• 30:12
Speaker 2: the Mount Rushmore just called and he wants us to
• 30:14
Speaker 2: go to Seattle with him in year one. You know, bab,
• 30:17
Speaker 2: this is one of those great opportunities year one with
• 30:19
Speaker 2: the best. So I go, So we go, and we
• 30:23
Speaker 2: have that year that we go seven to nine, but
• 30:25
Speaker 2: go to the second round of the playoffs.
• 30:27
Speaker 1: Yeah, you're the the Beast.
• 30:28
Speaker 2: The Beast game and beat the Saints who won the
• 30:31
Speaker 2: Super Bowl the year before, and hassle back through like
• 30:35
Speaker 2: six tugs in that game where five he was playing up.
• 30:38
Speaker 1: It was one of those Brandon Stokely you guy, yeah,
• 30:42
  Speaker 1: you know.
• 30:42
Speaker 2: And I'm coaching at quarterbacks and that's amazing and brought stokely.
• 30:45
Speaker 2: We brought you, tried to bring Brandon and he went
• 30:47
Speaker 2: to Chicago. But anyway, so go there. And at the
• 30:51
Speaker 2: end of the season they let go of Jeremy bis
• 30:54
Speaker 2: And Jeremy Bates was like my best friend in this profession.
• 30:57
Speaker 1: And he was the offensive coordinator.
• 30:59
Speaker 2: He was the offensive coordinator. He was with me at
• 31:01
Speaker 2: Denver and now Seattle. And when Pete spoke to me,
• 31:04
Speaker 2: it's like, you know, do you want to be the
• 31:08
  Speaker 2: office And I said, I can't do that. I said,
• 31:10
Speaker 2: I don't feel comfortable with that. I said, Jeremy's my guy,
• 31:15
Speaker 2: and I really don't want to stay and work for
• 31:17
Speaker 2: somebody else when I know I probably could have been it,
• 31:20
Speaker 2: but I didn't want to, you know, take the drink
• 31:22
Speaker 2: at it. It was a weird dynamic because I loved it.
• 31:25
Speaker 2: I loved Pete and I and he said, well, let
• 31:28
Speaker 2: me give you he goes. If that's the case. You know,
• 31:31
Speaker 2: my son just went to the University of Miami as
• 31:33
Speaker 2: a tight end coach. They need an offensive coordinator.
• 31:35
  Speaker 1: This is amazing.
• 31:37
Speaker 2: So I'm like, whoa the you? I'm a Jersey guy.
• 31:41
  Speaker 1: You know, Like there's a lot of there's a lot
• 31:44
Speaker 1: of procedure with that logo in Jersey.
• 31:46
Speaker 2: Yeah, you know that. My brother went to University of Miami,
• 31:51
Speaker 2: you know, back in the day during the thirty for
• 31:53
Speaker 2: thirty and like immediately my brain went thirty for thirty
• 31:56
Speaker 2: and immediately my brain went like Dennis ericson Jimmy Johnson.
• 32:01
Speaker 1: Hi, we're wearing the commando outfits off the plane taking
• 32:05
  Speaker 1: on Penn State.
• 32:05
Speaker 2: I know. And I was ready to go Camo on
• 32:07
Speaker 2: the plane. Bro. Like that was so I'm like, you
• 32:10
Speaker 2: know what, I just don't want to do it. I
• 32:13
Speaker 2: don't want to take my best friend. I don't want
• 32:15
Speaker 2: my best friend's job. I get it, and it was weird,
• 32:18
Speaker 2: but I took it. I went to University of Miami
• 32:20
Speaker 2: and loved it. Man loved it, and we got good
• 32:22
  Speaker 2: on offense.
• 32:23
Speaker 1: Who was the head coach, Al.
• 32:24
Speaker 2: Golden in his first year?
• 32:25
Speaker 1: Oh cool? Yeah? Yeah, So we had.
• 32:27
Speaker 2: Philip dor Set, Travis Benjamin Lamar, Miller, Mike James, j
• 32:32
Speaker 2: Corey Harritt. I mean it was a blast right college football,
• 32:35
Speaker 2: iconic names of you know athletes, Sean Spence. So we
• 32:40
Speaker 2: go there, spent two years there and going into our
• 32:44
Speaker 2: third year, Gus Bradley, who I coached within Seattle becomes
• 32:47
Speaker 2: the head coach Jasville and yeah, you know thon Rings
• 32:52
Speaker 2: and it's like, Jed, you know, I want you to
• 32:55
Speaker 2: be the offensive coordinator here. I just got the job.
• 32:58
Speaker 2: You know, Mikaylic just called Amber we can all do
• 33:01
Speaker 2: this together, be amazing defensive head coach. And I'm like, yeah,
• 33:05
Speaker 2: I mean this is what you work for, right, go
• 33:06
Speaker 2: be an NFL offensive coordinator. I go there, and we
• 33:10
Speaker 2: just weren't very good. You know. Just the bottom line is,
• 33:12
Speaker 2: for whatever reason it didn't click. We weren't as good
• 33:16
Speaker 2: as I wanted us to be. We weren't as good
• 33:18
Speaker 2: as anyone wanted anyone to be, whether it be we
• 33:21
Speaker 2: didn't have the players, the coaching, whatever it might be.
• 33:24
Speaker 2: I didn't do a good enough job. And after two years,
• 33:27
Speaker 2: the humble pill hit, and you know, and for the
• 33:30
Speaker 2: first time I was fined. Right like other times I've
• 33:34
Speaker 2: had to deal with maybe a coach, head coach, yep,
• 33:37
Speaker 2: but you know, I got called in and Gus was like, hey,
• 33:40
Speaker 2: we got to make a change, and you know, and
• 33:42
Speaker 2: I said, I get it. You know, we're playing with
• 33:44
Speaker 2: the rookie quarterback and rookie receivers. But that's you know,
• 33:47
Speaker 2: that's excuses. So I had a you know, for the
• 33:49
Speaker 2: real it was really the first time that I was like, whoa, yeah,
• 33:52
Speaker 2: you know it's I was what was I fourteenth thirty?
• 33:56
Speaker 2: I was forty exactly for it, and now you're like,
• 33:59
Speaker 2: oh my god, what happens. So luckily there was people
• 34:03
Speaker 2: that called and asked about was interested in quarterback jobs
• 34:05
Speaker 2: around the league. And then the phone rang and it
• 34:09
Speaker 2: was Jim Harbaugh and he just left the Niners to
• 34:13
Speaker 2: go to Michigan. And that was another double check. You know,
• 34:17
Speaker 2: it's like, I've never met Jim Harbaugh in my life,
• 34:20
Speaker 2: is that right? Never knew who he was.
• 34:22
Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's like you were working for Billick, not John,
• 34:24
  Speaker 1: so it's.
• 34:25
Speaker 2: Not like but the tie in was Vic Fangio. So Dick,
• 34:31
Speaker 2: who worked with him at San Francisco franchur, said he's like, Hey,
• 34:35
Speaker 2: I need a guy that's going to coach my quarterbacks
• 34:37
Speaker 2: receivers and run my passing game. So Vick's like, I
• 34:40
Speaker 2: got the guy. So Jim call said, how would you
• 34:44
Speaker 2: have interest in coming to Michigan? I said, when's the flight?
• 34:48
Speaker 2: Let's go. It's Michigan, man. You know, if there's certain jobs,
• 34:51
Speaker 2: there are certain people. I get it, So flew to Michigan,
• 34:56
Speaker 2: took the job on the phone, didn't have to. He goes,
• 34:59
Speaker 2: do you want to see it around? You know what
• 35:00
Speaker 2: am I going to see at college town?
• 35:03
Speaker 1: I've seen the Big House on TV my entire life.
• 35:05
  Speaker 1: I'm good.
• 35:05
Speaker 2: I've been to the game when Cordell Stewart through the hail. Mary.
• 35:10
Speaker 2: I was at the game at you were in Boulder.
• 35:14
Speaker 2: It wasn't it when they when they one hundred and
• 35:17
Speaker 2: ten thousand people went quiet? I was there, so I
• 35:19
Speaker 2: know it's like. Took the job there, went there for
• 35:22
Speaker 2: two years, worked for Jim. We had two great years
• 35:26
Speaker 2: and number two in the country. But it was a
• 35:28
Speaker 2: split job. It was I ran the past game, the
• 35:31
Speaker 2: on line coach, ran the run game, you know, Whaye
• 35:33
Speaker 2: calling And Jim Mora called at UCLA and he's like, hey,
• 35:37
Speaker 2: I have Josh Rosen. I want someone to coach, and
• 35:41
  Speaker 2: a lot.
• 35:41
Speaker 1: Because like I'm picturing, picturing the Wikipedia page which I
• 35:44
Speaker 1: don't have up or anything, and it's just like program,
• 35:47
Speaker 1: It's like all right, Miami, Jacksonville, Michigan, now UCLA, like
• 35:51
Speaker 1: these are not like we're not going to Eastern Illinois
• 35:53
Speaker 1: and nothing against Eastern Illinois, but like this, this is
• 35:56
  Speaker 1: major programs.
• 35:57
Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's how I looked at him, Like this
• 35:59
Speaker 2: is a PAC twelve coordinator job. I'm gonna do it.
• 36:01
Speaker 2: Jim Morra was an NFL Coach of the Year. I've
• 36:03
Speaker 2: always looked at who I'm working for. Go there, we
• 36:07
Speaker 2: go six and on home, we go all and six
• 36:09
Speaker 2: on the road, go to a bowl game. I was
• 36:12
Speaker 2: the interim head coach the last two games of the year.
• 36:14
Speaker 2: They let Jim go week eleven, So, you know, looking
• 36:17
Speaker 2: back on it, I left stability for what I didn't
• 36:20
Speaker 2: realize was instability. We were number three in the country
• 36:22
Speaker 2: in offense. We did a lot of good things, but
• 36:24
Speaker 2: we couldn't get it. We didn't win enough games, and
• 36:27
Speaker 2: they let Jim go and they hired Chip. Chip didn't
• 36:31
Speaker 2: want to keep me. You know, we off to keep me.
• 36:34
Speaker 1: You know, Chip's a beautiful mind on offense himself. He
• 36:36
Speaker 1: doesn't need your Yeah.
• 36:37
Speaker 2: Yeah, so there's no reason for him to keep me.
• 36:40
Speaker 2: And a lot of people in the college I had
• 36:44
Speaker 2: a lot of great opportunities, yes, but I was like,
• 36:47
  Speaker 2: I can't do this in a family. I mean, I
• 36:49
Speaker 2: can't move back to the SEC right now, Like, there
• 36:51
Speaker 2: was great jobs that were offered and I took a risk,
• 36:55
Speaker 2: and I'm like, I'm not doing it. I'm not picking
• 36:57
Speaker 2: my family up and moving him from the hand beach again.
• 36:59
Speaker 2: I have another year on my contract. I'll see what
• 37:01
Speaker 2: it looks like. I go, I'm gonna call you and
• 37:03
Speaker 2: I's mutual friend. Yeah, And I'm gonna give Shawn a call.
• 37:07
Speaker 2: He just got to the RAMS. He was there one year,
• 37:10
Speaker 2: and I was gonna see what his interest was in
• 37:13
Speaker 2: me coming on board, and he said, give me twenty
• 37:15
Speaker 2: four hours. And he caused me back at two o'clock
• 37:17
Speaker 2: the next day and offers me a job to come.
• 37:21
  Speaker 1: There, and.
• 37:23
Speaker 2: We went to the super Bowl.
• 37:25
  Speaker 1: It's amazing.
• 37:26
Speaker 2: It was amazing. Spent two years with Sean absolutely, you know,
• 37:31
Speaker 2: helped him in every way he would allow me to
• 37:33
Speaker 2: help him. I always tell his story and you and
• 37:35
Speaker 2: I know Sean as good as anybody tell it.
• 37:37
  Speaker 1: I agree.
• 37:38
Speaker 2: I want to hear like I drove in every single
• 37:42
Speaker 2: Now you think of this, right, like, I feel like
• 37:44
Speaker 2: I had a pretty good career up until that point.
• 37:46
Speaker 2: Like I've you know, I was successful. I've been on
• 37:49
Speaker 2: good programs, work for good coaches, Sean was I guess
• 37:53
Speaker 2: thirty two maybe as a time, thirty three, thirty two.
• 37:58
Speaker 1: And got there when he was thirty, so yeah, he's
• 38:00
Speaker 1: probably thirty. He went to super Bowl at thirty three,
• 38:02
  Speaker 1: so yeah.
• 38:02
Speaker 2: Okay, so so okay, the first Super Bowl was because
• 38:05
Speaker 2: I went with he wanted to thirty three, right or
• 38:07
  Speaker 2: he won?
• 38:08
Speaker 1: You're right, so this is he's probably thirty two when
• 38:11
Speaker 1: you were because it was your first year. It was
• 38:12
Speaker 1: after the first year in Atlanta, that super Bowl.
• 38:15
Speaker 2: Yeah, that super Bowl? Right. So I'm there after what
• 38:17
Speaker 2: and I'm driving in every single day, scared to death
• 38:20
Speaker 2: about letting Sean down. You know, I'm just like this guy.
• 38:25
Speaker 2: He works so hard and he's so driven and he's
• 38:29
Speaker 2: so smart that Yeah, I've worked for some great coaches,
• 38:31
Speaker 2: any great programs. But I left my house in my ambage.
• 38:34
Speaker 2: I had to drive fifty three miles every day to
• 38:37
Speaker 2: go two thousand dollars dang, And I was like for
• 38:41
Speaker 2: two years, I was like, all I want to do
• 38:43
Speaker 2: is make sure at the end of the day Sean
• 38:46
Speaker 2: goes home and goes yeah, Jed did a good job today,
• 38:48
Speaker 2: And that's what that's the magic of Sean. Yeah, the
• 38:51
Speaker 2: magic of Sean. My office is my office was sandwich
• 38:54
Speaker 2: between Shane Walden and Zach Taylor. Yep, kay, Liam was
• 38:58
Speaker 2: next to Zac. Yeah, Clane Phillips was across from me.
• 39:02
Speaker 2: So you're thinking, like, this is a great staff, but
• 39:05
Speaker 2: a great group of people, you know, great people, and
• 39:09
  Speaker 2: I don't know. I just that's the Sean magic. Everyone
• 39:12
  Speaker 2: wants to know.
• 39:12
Speaker 1: Well, what was the goal?
• 39:13
  Speaker 3: It was?
• 39:13
Speaker 1: You wanted to beat him to work every day? Like
• 39:15
Speaker 1: did you want to be in that parking lot before him?
• 39:17
Speaker 1: You want to stay later? It was just I'm driving
• 39:19
Speaker 1: these fifty three miles. I want to make sure this
• 39:21
Speaker 1: guy knows that I'm doing my job.
• 39:22
Speaker 2: I just want him to know that, no matter what
• 39:25
Speaker 2: how indebted I was to him for keeping me not
• 39:28
Speaker 2: moving my family, giving me an opportunity and with it, like,
• 39:32
Speaker 2: everyone wants to know. And he has this magic about him.
• 39:35
Speaker 2: Everyone thinks it's his play calling. He's a good play
• 39:37
Speaker 2: he's a great play caller, or you know, his football mind,
• 39:40
Speaker 2: he's got a great football mind. But what his magic
• 39:44
Speaker 2: is how hard people want to work for and how
• 39:47
Speaker 2: hard players want to play for him. And that's, unfortunately,
• 39:52
Speaker 2: I think that's the missing link. A little bit. When
• 39:53
Speaker 2: people talk about Sean, you know, oh, he's such a
• 39:56
Speaker 2: great play caller, always got such a great memory. Yeah,
• 39:59
Speaker 2: that's fine. It's the other part that makes him elite.
• 40:03
Speaker 2: And when I was working for him, that's how I felt,
• 40:06
Speaker 2: and so I was. I just dove into the offense,
• 40:08
Speaker 2: learned the offense. Obviously I was from the Shanahan tree,
• 40:11
Speaker 2: so I knew a lot of it to begin with.
• 40:12
Speaker 2: And then we put a lot of stuff together and
• 40:14
Speaker 2: we talked a lot about what I've done and it
• 40:16
Speaker 2: was great. Spent two years there. Season came to the
• 40:20
Speaker 2: end in twenty nineteen. We didn't have as good of
• 40:22
Speaker 2: a year, went nine and seven and Super Bowl the
• 40:25
Speaker 2: nine and seven and we're sitting a we're on vacation
• 40:28
Speaker 2: and Bill Belichick calls, I love this phone.
• 40:31
Speaker 1: This is like you're like the this is not exulting.
• 40:34
Speaker 1: You're like the forest freaking gump of coaching when you
• 40:36
Speaker 1: get these calls, like and here's this world luminary just
• 40:39
Speaker 1: in my life. It's amazing Belichick calls out of the bliz.
• 40:41
Speaker 2: Yeah. And I've known coach for a very long time.
• 40:45
Speaker 2: We talked a lot throughout the decade that I that
• 40:47
Speaker 2: I knew him. I met him at Miami when I
• 40:49
Speaker 2: was coaching at University of Miami and he calls and
• 40:52
Speaker 2: he says, you know, do you want to come here
• 40:53
Speaker 2: and be the quarterback coach? And a lot of other
• 40:55
Speaker 2: opportunities in the future that could present and.
• 41:00
Speaker 1: You know, finished the Rushmore had on the Mountain rush, right.
• 41:04
Speaker 2: And you know the thing that always obsessed me is
• 41:07
Speaker 2: when people are like, your job, you know, hopping. I'm like, no,
• 41:11
Speaker 2: I'm learning hopping. I don't know what that is, but like,
• 41:14
Speaker 2: you know, no, I get it.
• 41:16
Speaker 1: You're soaking up the best of all of these amazing code.
• 41:19
Speaker 1: Who else has that in their back pocket?
• 41:20
  Speaker 2: And what else?
• 41:21
  Speaker 3: You know?
• 41:21
Speaker 2: So you turn it down. You turn it down, and
• 41:23
Speaker 2: then you're like, wait a second, man, it would have
• 41:25
Speaker 2: been cool to one day work for him. Well, I
• 41:27
Speaker 2: had the chances to work from, So why would you
• 41:28
Speaker 2: ever turn it down? And you know, it's tough on
• 41:31
Speaker 2: your family, It's tough on my kids. It's not like
• 41:33
Speaker 2: I'm this, you know, single guy that runs around the country, right,
• 41:35
Speaker 2: It's I got it. At this point in time, a
• 41:38
Speaker 2: sixth grader, ninth grader, a college graduate. You know, it's
• 41:42
Speaker 2: like they're moving with us and Ambers, you know, the
• 41:45
Speaker 2: best coach's wife in the world. And she's like, yeah,
• 41:50
Speaker 2: it's coach Belichick. You know, like, what are you gonna do?
• 41:52
Speaker 2: Say no, I mean the guys won. Guy's been in
• 41:55
Speaker 2: ten Super Bowls. I won eight. So we go there
• 41:58
Speaker 2: and I'm like, this is it. This is like my
• 42:02
Speaker 2: I'm definitely not going anywhere.
• 42:05
Speaker 1: Putting the bags away. That's throw the two cases away.
• 42:07
Speaker 2: We're staying, build a swimming pool, you know it. We're home.
• 42:12
Speaker 2: Whatever you want to do, you got you know, we
• 42:16
Speaker 2: are here and we're staying here, and COVID hits and
• 42:19
Speaker 2: all this other stuff. But whatever. We're like, it's okay,
• 42:22
Speaker 2: we're home, you know, three hours from home. We're in Boston. Boston,
• 42:26
Speaker 2: you know, you know, get to Nantucket, get to the Hamptons,
• 42:29
Speaker 2: get to vacation spots, you know, running to you on vacation,
• 42:33
Speaker 2: all the good stuff. Go to New York City. And
• 42:36
Speaker 2: week fourteen, Universey Arizona calls, not even the rest of us,
• 42:40
Speaker 2: not even through the season.
• 42:42
Speaker 1: So at this point, you have never been a head
• 42:45
Speaker 1: coach at college or the NFL here in your early forties,
• 42:51
Speaker 1: and a major program calls, what what is that phone.
• 42:55
Speaker 2: Call, like, yeah, so it was you know, I interviewed
• 43:00
Speaker 2: for this job in twenty seventeen. I've interviewed for the
• 43:04
Speaker 2: univer the Arizona job. They hired Kevin's someone, but I knew,
• 43:07
Speaker 2: you know, there was always going to be a chance
• 43:09
Speaker 2: to come back around. And the phone rings and you're
• 43:14
Speaker 2: like that one was more like are you interested in
• 43:16
Speaker 2: this job? Versus me saying I would love this job.
• 43:19
Speaker 1: You know, I want that job. I want that job.
• 43:21
Speaker 1: It was we're coming after you, We're courting you a
• 43:23
  Speaker 1: little bit.
• 43:24
Speaker 2: And for this one for this situation, because they were
• 43:27
Speaker 2: coming off of seventy to seven loss, yes the two
• 43:30
Speaker 2: Arizona state So you lose to your arrival by nine
• 43:34
Speaker 2: touchdowns at home and then make a coaching change. And
• 43:39
Speaker 2: I was like, oh boy, this is a lot of work,
• 43:43
Speaker 2: you know, And I'm sitting here and I don't want
• 43:46
Speaker 2: to stay with the Golden Ticket, but like you go,
• 43:48
Speaker 2: McVeigh Belichick, You just you ride that bad boy out
• 43:51
Speaker 2: right until some owner wants to say, this is the
• 43:54
Speaker 2: type of guy that I want to hire, right. And
• 43:57
Speaker 2: it's not like it was hard to get people who
• 43:59
Speaker 2: want to hire offensive coaches from the McVay tree. But
• 44:02
Speaker 2: it's not like right, assistant coaches hired from the Belichick tree.
• 44:06
Speaker 1: You're right, does it like the only trees that get you.
• 44:10
Speaker 2: Know, with the forest the tree kings. And I'm like, well,
• 44:16
Speaker 2: that's not what I do it for. I don't do it.
• 44:17
  Speaker 2: I don't take a job to get a job. I'm
• 44:20
Speaker 2: in a job and I got a job. So like
• 44:23
  Speaker 2: that didn't make like it wasn't. So I'm like, I'm
• 44:24
Speaker 2: taking this job and I'm gonna go be the head
• 44:26
Speaker 2: coach at Arizona. We're going to turn this thing around,
• 44:29
Speaker 2: and I'm gonna live in the sunshine and coach every
• 44:31
Speaker 2: day with a smile and build this thing from scratch.
• 44:35
Speaker 2: So I got here, and let me tell you this
• 44:37
Speaker 2: one quick story about Coach Belichick. So I walked into
• 44:39
Speaker 2: his office at eight thirty at night and I said,
• 44:42
Speaker 2: I was just offered the yeod a job. You know,
• 44:44
Speaker 2: I had a zoom interview, got the job. The next
• 44:46
Speaker 2: day they offered me the job. I go, I just thought,
• 44:49
Speaker 2: And he's like, and I told him I was having
• 44:51
Speaker 2: to the zoom interview, of course, and he's like, that's great.
• 44:54
Speaker 2: What did you decide to do? And I said, I'm
• 44:56
Speaker 2: gonna take the job. He goes, great, takes his phone out,
• 45:00
Speaker 2: he goes, let's call Bruce Ki, Yes, let him know.
• 45:05
Speaker 2: And then let's call Rob let him know.
• 45:08
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 45:08
Speaker 2: And then why don't you go back to your office,
• 45:10
Speaker 2: take a deep breath, figure it out, and then tomorrow morning,
• 45:13
Speaker 2: why don't we meet and why don't we talk about
• 45:15
Speaker 2: what it's like to be a head coach.
• 45:17
Speaker 1: Dude, I love this. So instead of Belichick being territorial
• 45:20
Speaker 1: or say it okay, give me your playbook and get out,
• 45:22
Speaker 1: let's get teddy Bruce Ki maybe the Desert Storm greatest
• 45:26
Speaker 1: defender or Desert swarm at the time, greatest defender in
• 45:29
Speaker 1: Aarson history. Let me call Gronkowski and let's give you
• 45:31
Speaker 1: those contacts and let's get you going because you're gonna
• 45:33
Speaker 1: need those guys on this ride and.
• 45:34
Speaker 2: You're gonna need him to support you. And I'm gonna
• 45:37
Speaker 2: give you the blessing and to support you.
• 45:39
Speaker 1: And it was that is cool. Jed is a cool story.
• 45:42
Speaker 2: It was It was like it was one of those moments.
• 45:45
Speaker 2: And then I walk in the next morning, and you
• 45:46
Speaker 2: never know, right how anyone handles those type things. I
• 45:49
Speaker 2: spent three four days at the office. I did my
• 45:51
Speaker 2: press conference in the conference room across from Bill's office.
• 45:54
Speaker 2: I mean, he was amazing, and he sat there and
• 45:57
Speaker 2: he went through and he's still amazing. He checks it out.
• 45:59
Speaker 2: He's been to campus four times already. He brought his
• 46:01
Speaker 2: team here for a week before they played the Raiders.
• 46:04
Speaker 2: He came out here this spring to meet with team
• 46:06
Speaker 2: and watches practice and spend the day with I mean,
• 46:09
Speaker 2: but anyway, that the point is that that moment, those
• 46:11
Speaker 2: twenty four hours of like, hey, let's talk about the
• 46:14
Speaker 2: training room, let's talk about the weight room, let's talk
• 46:16
Speaker 2: about staffing, roster management. You know, he gave you, he
• 46:21
Speaker 2: opened up his book to you, and that was so cool.
• 46:24
Speaker 2: And now we're in year three. We got a good team,
• 46:27
Speaker 2: and I'm waking up every morning that same spilem bro So,
• 46:31
Speaker 2: I'm sorry for a long story, but that is ye
• 46:33
Speaker 2: I asked for it. That's what I want.
• 46:34
Speaker 1: This is the season with Peter Schrager. And there's nothing
• 46:36
Speaker 1: that encapsulates, you know, two journeys more than the coach
• 46:41
Speaker 1: who says, oh, well, I've just been with this team
• 46:43
Speaker 1: for twenty years and here's what I've been through, than
• 46:45
Speaker 1: you who says, here's my you know, for verbial man
• 46:49
Speaker 1: walking in the desert and going spot to spot spot
• 46:51
Speaker 1: to finally finding that home in the desert. And Arizona
• 46:54
Speaker 1: is a hot team. Like everywhere I go, people are
• 46:56
Speaker 1: talking about Arizona football and it's not just this regional
• 46:59
Speaker 1: thing anymore. I feel like you guys have talent from
• 47:03
Speaker 1: all over the country. Give us a quick snapshot for
• 47:05
Speaker 1: a lot of NFL listeners boun to get going with
• 47:07
Speaker 1: the college football season what they can expect from the
• 47:09
  Speaker 1: Arizona Wildcat.
• 47:10
Speaker 2: Yeah. I think what's been super cool about our program.
• 47:12
Speaker 2: I had Steve Kahm talk to our guys yesterday, and
• 47:14
Speaker 2: so Steve was in the building and I got.
• 47:16
Speaker 1: The selfie he sent me that I said, does that's
• 47:18
Speaker 1: my guy having about tomorrow?
• 47:21
Speaker 2: And what I've told our guys is this is the
• 47:24
Speaker 2: first time that you could actually take us to think
• 47:27
Speaker 2: of looking the mirror and say we got some NFL
• 47:28
Speaker 2: players on this team. And that's the super cool part
• 47:31
Speaker 2: of it. I think our left tackle who came back
• 47:34
Speaker 2: from an ACL is gonna be a first round pick.
• 47:37
Speaker 2: What's his name, Jordan Morgan. He's you know, every NFL
• 47:42
Speaker 2: guy has been through he came back for his last year,
• 47:45
Speaker 2: which is an amazing deal for US. Jacob Calling has
• 47:49
Speaker 2: had two thousand yard receiving yards in a row, so
• 47:52
Speaker 2: he's going to star. He's on the Plit, the Coff Watchlist.
• 47:55
Speaker 2: He had eighty five catches for eleven hundred yards last year.
• 47:57
Speaker 2: He came back rather than go early, go in the
• 48:00
Speaker 2: draft and instead of a fourth round pick, try to
• 48:02
Speaker 2: be a second round pick. Mike Wiley are running back.
• 48:05
Speaker 2: I think it's fantastic player. He's climbing the charts everywhere.
• 48:10
Speaker 2: And Tanner McLaughlin our tight end, and another guy that's
• 48:13
Speaker 2: climbing all those charts in the NFL. I think we
• 48:16
Speaker 2: have a chance to get four guys drafted in this class,
• 48:19
Speaker 2: if not maybe five, and then, uh, you know, it
• 48:21
Speaker 2: all starts with our quarterback.
• 48:23
Speaker 1: Let's talk about him. Because I was with Kingsbury on
• 48:27
Speaker 1: Monday night. This is ty territorial for you. You're like, wait,
• 48:30
Speaker 1: that's a USC coach and he was raving about this
• 48:32
Speaker 1: Caleb Williams, and I'm like, what about the Arizona quarterback?
• 48:35
Speaker 1: And Cliff's like, oh, that guy's good too, So tell
• 48:37
Speaker 1: us about the Arizona quarterback.
• 48:38
Speaker 2: His name yeah, the DeLaura. So I got Jaden Delarea
• 48:41
Speaker 2: in the transfer portal. He was the PAC twelve Freshman
• 48:43
Speaker 2: of the Year a year ago, two years ago now
• 48:46
Speaker 2: and was at Washington State, went into the transfer portal,
• 48:50
Speaker 2: came here on his way to a bunch of other spots,
• 48:52
Speaker 2: and we, you know, I always say, we just kidnapped him,
• 48:54
Speaker 2: kept him, didn't leave. He was undefeated in high school,
• 48:59
Speaker 2: played at Saint Louis High School, same high school two
• 49:01
Speaker 2: in Mariota, was uh, you know, undefeated, you know, was
• 49:05
Speaker 2: the Gatoray Player of the Year. You know, it was
• 49:08
Speaker 2: the All Polly Bowl MVP. And went there Washington State
• 49:12
Speaker 2: with Rolovich. That whole thing happened when in the portal
• 49:16
Speaker 2: came here. Last year, our offense went from one hundred
• 49:19
Speaker 2: and twenty first to first in explosive place.
• 49:21
Speaker 1: Damn, damn. In explosive plays, which is what thirty yards
• 49:24
  Speaker 1: or more.
• 49:25
Speaker 2: No, it's eighteen yards or more, eighteen yards or more,
• 49:28
Speaker 2: we went from one twenty one to one. And in
• 49:30
Speaker 2: total offense or in passing offense, we went from one
• 49:33
Speaker 2: nineteen to sixth in his first year, yes, okay, And
• 49:37
Speaker 2: in total offense we went from one twenty two to twenty,
• 49:41
Speaker 2: so he's back. He's got two years left this year
• 49:44
Speaker 2: plus one. Who knows what that will look like. I
• 49:46
Speaker 2: think this kid is special. I've been around a lot
• 49:50
Speaker 2: of quarterbacks. He has completely changed his life, the way
• 49:54
Speaker 2: he's focused, the way he's preparing, what he believes in,
• 49:58
Speaker 2: trying to do things right all the time. But he's
• 50:02
Speaker 2: also got this gift of instincts that I rarely have
• 50:06
Speaker 2: been around. And I've been around really good quarterbacks and
• 50:09
Speaker 2: coach really really good quarterbacks, but this guy's got like that.
• 50:12
Speaker 2: You know, he's got two eyes in the back of
• 50:14
Speaker 2: his head and he just sees things and gets the things.
• 50:17
Speaker 2: And there's sometimes it's like I always look at something,
• 50:20
Speaker 2: I'm like four times again, I'm like, anything can happen.
• 50:23
Speaker 2: I mean, it's like, guys wide open over here, and
• 50:26
Speaker 2: he's like whoa and turns and runs this way and
• 50:28
Speaker 2: hits the touchdown pass over here, And I said, how
• 50:30
Speaker 2: did you never mind? Anything can happen? Yeah, So we
• 50:34
Speaker 2: got to cut down the interceptions. We got to continue
• 50:37
Speaker 2: to build on his let's call it, you know, rhythm
• 50:43
Speaker 2: and timing and decision making. And if we can do that,
• 50:46
Speaker 2: this kid is going to be the best quarterback in
• 50:48
Speaker 2: the nation. I don't know if it's or next love,
• 50:50
Speaker 2: but I'm telling you, this kid is going to be
• 50:53
Speaker 2: the best quarterback in the nation.
• 50:59
Speaker 1: All Right, give me a couple quick things here. When
• 51:02
Speaker 1: you have this NFL background, this pedigle. You mentioned that
• 51:06
Speaker 1: Belichick's been there, I would think that one of the
• 51:08
Speaker 1: allures or one of the cool things for playing for
• 51:11
Speaker 1: Arizona's that you're going to get a touch of the
• 51:13
Speaker 1: NFL too. These guys are going to get back in there.
• 51:15
Speaker 1: Who have you had visit campus and who have you
• 51:17
Speaker 1: had speak with the team You mentioned Steve Kimon Belichick
• 51:19
  Speaker 1: so far?
• 51:20
Speaker 2: Yeah, well we've had. So we do something called we
• 51:22
Speaker 2: Educate Wednesday, and every Wednesday during the year we bring
• 51:24
Speaker 2: a different speaker in to talk to our program. You know,
• 51:27
Speaker 2: sometimes it works out on a Wednesday, sometimes it doesn't.
• 51:30
Speaker 2: But on campus, Pete Curll's been on campus three times
• 51:33
Speaker 2: talking to our team. Sean McVay has been on campus
• 51:36
Speaker 2: talking to our team. Was the keynote speaker at our clinic.
• 51:39
Speaker 2: Brian Billick was the keynote speaker of our clinic one year.
• 51:42
Speaker 2: Zach Taylor has been on campus spoke at our clinic
• 51:46
Speaker 2: after this past year. Zach obviously spoke to our quarterback,
• 51:50
Speaker 2: spent time with all of our players. He was amazing.
• 51:53
Speaker 2: Mike Smith from the Falcons has been here. Howie Roseman
• 51:57
Speaker 2: has been here. Coach Belichick's been here a couple of times.
• 52:00
Speaker 2: Mike Lombardi has been here I think four different times.
• 52:05
Speaker 2: Oh wow, Okay, And you know, and there's probably more
• 52:09
Speaker 2: that I haven't even thought of that.
• 52:11
Speaker 1: What about some of the players you mentioned.
• 52:13
Speaker 2: Jordan has spoken Cam Jordan came to town from Chandler, Arizona,
• 52:19
Speaker 2: but Doug hendrick Ston brought him in town, and you
• 52:23
Speaker 2: know he was He had an amazing message. Matthew Slater
• 52:26
Speaker 2: spoke to our team talking about the just character, special teams,
• 52:32
Speaker 2: work ethic, doing things right. We had Cam Newton talk
• 52:35
Speaker 2: to our team, you know, former players, former coaches, current coaches.
• 52:41
Speaker 2: We tried to Mike Tannembaum has talked to our team.
• 52:45
Speaker 2: So what we've tried to do is bring in guys
• 52:49
Speaker 2: that can share the message and reiterate the message of hey,
• 52:54
Speaker 2: it's everything you do, it's everything you do if you
• 52:58
Speaker 2: want to. The NFL is a game of attrition. They
• 53:01
Speaker 2: wait for you to screw up. In college so they
• 53:03
Speaker 2: don't have to draft you. You know, That's what I
• 53:06
Speaker 2: tell these all the time.
• 53:07
Speaker 1: What a what a true fact too. I'm just doing
• 53:09
Speaker 1: the draft stuff every year. It's just all right, before
• 53:11
Speaker 1: we even talk about heights and waits, do we have
• 53:13
Speaker 1: a red flag on him or not?
• 53:14
Speaker 2: Yeah, they just wait for a screw up, right, Oh
• 53:16
Speaker 2: he's not a hard worker, Okay, no problem. Oh he's
• 53:18
Speaker 2: not good in the weight room, Okay, no problem. He
• 53:20
Speaker 2: doesn't love football, Okay, no problem. Right, because otherwise you'd
• 53:23
Speaker 2: have to evaluate a thousand players that no one has
• 53:25
Speaker 2: time to do that. So what I talk to these guys, go, guys,
• 53:28
Speaker 2: I've been in the draft room for thirteen years at
• 53:31
Speaker 2: every role from a nobody to a moderate somebody right
• 53:36
Speaker 2: in that draft room that you had either no opinion
• 53:39
Speaker 2: or you had a big opinion. Right, you're an offensive court,
• 53:41
Speaker 2: you got a lot of opinion. So it's like from
• 53:44
Speaker 2: that area, I can just tell you what they look for,
• 53:46
Speaker 2: and we try to reiterate it constantly, you know, with
• 53:49
Speaker 2: different speakers. And you know when you have Coach Carrol,
• 53:52
Speaker 2: Coach Belichick, you know, Coach McVeigh, Coach Taylor talking to you, guys,
• 53:56
Speaker 2: they're they're saying, this is what we're looking for. It's like, guys,
• 53:59
Speaker 2: that's not that hard, be a great teammate, do things
• 54:02
Speaker 2: right off the field. You know they're gonna be scouts
• 54:06
Speaker 2: want to know are you the last guy off the
• 54:07
Speaker 2: field or not. They want to know this. And so
• 54:10
Speaker 2: when you're the first got out the field, you've eliminated yourself.
• 54:13
Speaker 2: No problem. They'll go to the next guy. And they
• 54:16
Speaker 2: think talent overrides the talent's irrelevant. Everybody has talent. It's
• 54:21
Speaker 2: what you do it. Steve Kims sitting beautifully yesterday, he said,
• 54:24
Speaker 2: you don't miss on players, you miss on people. And
• 54:28
Speaker 2: I thought that was so good, so good. So that's
• 54:31
Speaker 2: what we do. That's how we recruit. Josh McDaniels will
• 54:34
Speaker 2: be here next year's clinic. We'll get him down here.
• 54:37
Speaker 2: We'll get you know, Vic's been here, Chris Furster's been here.
• 54:42
Speaker 2: You know, as you start thinking about some of the
• 54:43
Speaker 2: guys that have been through, Vic's been in a practice
• 54:45
Speaker 2: every single year. Chris has been here at least three times.
• 54:49
Speaker 2: He went to you know, he's from Tucson. Yeah, another
• 54:52
Speaker 2: Shanahan disciple, probably the best offensive line.
• 54:55
Speaker 1: Coach in the NFL still doing it dominant.
• 54:57
Speaker 2: So I mean it's been awesome Peter, you know, just
• 55:00
Speaker 2: to have these guys here and just continue to build
• 55:02
  Speaker 2: this program up.
• 55:04
Speaker 1: Let me let me do it because you've been so
• 55:06
Speaker 1: gracious time. I'm loving this. I could do honestly for
• 55:08
Speaker 1: three hours. Let me give you a couple of questions here.
• 55:11
Speaker 1: First one, you you get to Arizona and you've got
• 55:14
Speaker 1: these teams USC obviously Utah's now a power when you're recruiting.
• 55:21
Speaker 1: Take a moment, look into the zoom camera, give me
• 55:24
Speaker 1: the thirty second elevator pitch on why I would go
• 55:26
Speaker 1: to the University of Arizona over some of those other
• 55:28
  Speaker 1: Pack twelve teams.
• 55:29
Speaker 2: Yeah, I would say, real simple that you have a
• 55:32
Speaker 2: chance here that you don't have other places to learn
• 55:37
Speaker 2: a learn what it's like to be an NFL player,
• 55:39
Speaker 2: be treated like an NFL player, Be coached by guys
• 55:42
Speaker 2: that have been in the NFL, from Chuck Cecil to
• 55:44
Speaker 2: Ricky Honley, Guys that you know I've been a coach
• 55:47
Speaker 2: in the NFL, Bunning Carroll, myself, Scott A. Graham. You
• 55:51
Speaker 2: have an opportunity here to truly showcase your skills in
• 55:55
Speaker 2: a small town. We are at college town. You're not
• 55:58
Speaker 2: fighting for billboards. You're not fighting for It's not going
• 56:02
Speaker 2: to be either Matthew Stafford or Jaden DeLaura on the billboard.
• 56:05
Speaker 2: It's going to be Jaden Delare And you have a chance,
• 56:08
Speaker 2: I believe, with our connections and with our ties, to
• 56:11
Speaker 2: always be on everybody's map. And then it's a matter
• 56:14
Speaker 2: of do you want to be the guy that turned
• 56:15
Speaker 2: around a program or do you want to guy to
• 56:18
Speaker 2: be a guy that's plug and play that no one's
• 56:19
Speaker 2: even gonna know. You know, you're just another guy at
• 56:23
Speaker 2: the great programs to get another win, and that to
• 56:25
Speaker 2: us is the biggest key.
• 56:27
Speaker 1: Love it. Quick questions, rapid fire about some of the
• 56:30
Speaker 1: people you've worked with, and give me your best stories
• 56:32
Speaker 1: you were. Tell me this is true. This might be
• 56:34
Speaker 1: a myth or a legend, or it's been exaggerary. Were
• 56:36
Speaker 1: you college roommates with Howie Roseman at Florida or just
• 56:38
Speaker 1: buddies with how college roommates? This is insane. So your
• 56:43
Speaker 1: college roommates kid from New Jersey and how he's from
• 56:45
Speaker 1: New Jersey. Also, neither one of you played football, and
• 56:48
Speaker 1: one of them is the reigning executive of the year
• 56:50
Speaker 1: and the other one is the head coach at Arizona
• 56:52
Speaker 1: with the I mean, take us into that dorm room.
• 56:55
Speaker 1: What is that dorm room? Like with Howie Roseman and Gainesville,
• 56:58
Speaker 1: Florida in the late nineties, so.
• 57:00
Speaker 2: We were He's one year older than I am, so
• 57:03
Speaker 2: he was a class at night he was. He started
• 57:06
Speaker 2: ninety three, I started in ninety four. We pledged the
• 57:08
Speaker 2: same fraternity. Okay, didn't know each other, you know, it's
• 57:12
Speaker 2: not like I knew how he at all. He was
• 57:14
Speaker 2: from about an now up in about forty five.
• 57:16
Speaker 1: Yeah, Jeries Central, so now you know.
• 57:19
Speaker 2: So we pledge a fraternity and then at the end
• 57:21
Speaker 2: of my freshman year, I needed a roommate or I
• 57:24
Speaker 2: wanted a roommate to move out of the dorms into
• 57:27
Speaker 2: an apartment my sophomore year, and Howie's roommate who was
• 57:31
Speaker 2: going abroad, going to study abroad. So he's like so
• 57:34
  Speaker 2: they're like, yeah, there's a room in Oxford manor X
• 57:37
Speaker 2: one twelve. So I'm like, all right, So I move in.
• 57:40
Speaker 2: And he was a fraternity brother and we became friends
• 57:43
Speaker 2: and better friends, and now we're roommates for a year
• 57:46
Speaker 2: and we're living together and it started in the spring.
• 57:49
Speaker 2: So the story really my favorite story in this whole thing,
• 57:53
Speaker 2: because I was a you know, my freshman year and
• 57:55
Speaker 2: he was a sophomore, so life didn't really happen at
• 57:58
Speaker 2: that point. It's a draft day morning. It's draft day morning.
• 58:03
Speaker 2: What year ninety fourteen, ninety okay, spring of ninety five.
• 58:09
Speaker 2: When was Kyle Brady drafted? That's why I need you know.
• 58:12
Speaker 1: Kyle Brady was the eleventh overall pick in the ninety
• 58:15
Speaker 1: five drafts of the New York Jets, and that was
• 58:16
Speaker 1: the Warren Sap Draft.
• 58:17
Speaker 2: Go there you go. So it's nineteen ninety five, it's
• 58:21
Speaker 2: whatever time, it is, probably eleven am. And my room
• 58:25
Speaker 2: was on the bottom floor. I was on the bottom floor.
• 58:27
Speaker 2: How he was above okay, and the he starts rolling
• 58:30
Speaker 2: down the stairs and it's whatever. You know, it's a
• 58:33
Speaker 2: Saturday morning in college.
• 58:35
Speaker 1: Yeah, and you're not you're not you're not graduates yet,
• 58:38
  Speaker 1: your sof fores.
• 58:39
Speaker 2: And probably mess shorts and says gaitors And I'm in
• 58:43
Speaker 2: some fraternity T shirt that says like tep Margaritaville. Okay,
• 58:48
Speaker 2: and I'm on the couch and like kind of lying down,
• 58:51
Speaker 2: and how he walks down, briefcase in hand.
• 58:54
Speaker 1: Folder in hand, ready to go, and I'm a briefcase
• 58:58
Speaker 1: in folder the NFL draft or.
• 59:01
Speaker 2: What are you doing? Man? You know, probably like what
• 59:03
  Speaker 2: are you doing?
• 59:03
  Speaker 3: Man?
• 59:04
Speaker 2: He goes, it's draft day. I go, yeah, I know,
• 59:09
Speaker 2: Kuiper's on, you know, like Kuiper's on this.
• 59:11
Speaker 1: Yeah, we got like and there's and there's a fraturity
• 59:13
Speaker 1: party and there's a keg in the front.
• 59:15
Speaker 2: I know, we got like the nineteen inch Yeah, no
• 59:20
Speaker 2: flat screens at that time, right, So we're watching TV
• 59:23
Speaker 2: and I'm like, all right, yeah, the draft is on,
• 59:25
Speaker 2: and he's next thing. You know, I'm not kidding you. Okay,
• 59:29
Speaker 2: He's got the setup of all setups. He's got his
• 59:33
Speaker 2: draft board, he's got his list, he's ready to go.
• 59:37
Speaker 2: He's marking down, he's following draft picks are going. I'm
• 59:39
Speaker 2: in awe. I'm just sitting there watching him, like what
• 59:41
Speaker 2: are you doing? Man? And he's like, this guy gets taken.
• 59:45
Speaker 2: This guy. He's like, all right, he's ready now we're
• 59:48
Speaker 2: eleventh overall. He's ready to take his pick as the
• 59:51
Speaker 2: New York Jets general manager. And oh, by the way,
• 59:54
Speaker 2: he was a Jets fanatic it's.
• 59:56
  Speaker 1: A Jets fanatic.
• 59:56
Speaker 2: I know that, ye fanatic.
• 59:58
Speaker 1: I don't know if it was eleventh pick. But they're
• 59:59
Speaker 1: on the board and it's the draft and Warren Sapp
• 1:00:02
Speaker 1: is falling and Kyle Brady from Penn State is available.
• 1:00:05
Speaker 2: And they just took a tight end and I believe
• 1:00:07
Speaker 2: right they had Mitchell was there, of course, and they
• 1:00:11
Speaker 2: go Kyle Brady, you know, like commissioner. Uh, I think
• 1:00:17
Speaker 2: it's yeah, I forget which one is there, Kyle? And
• 1:00:22
Speaker 2: the reaction was like someone killed his dog in front
• 1:00:25
Speaker 2: of him. Okay, he's slamming his pad, he's yelling about
• 1:00:32
Speaker 2: who is available. We have a tight end. I'm like, bro,
• 1:00:38
Speaker 2: what are you doing? He goes, I'm gonna be a
• 1:00:41
Speaker 2: GM in this league one day, and this is never
• 1:00:44
Speaker 2: gonna happen on my watch.
• 1:00:46
Speaker 1: Wow, yeah, okay, sure you know here is bro Howie.
• 1:00:52
Speaker 2: Anyway, getting back through the social aspect of the draft,
• 1:00:56
Speaker 2: I'm gonna head over back over here and he says,
• 1:00:59
Speaker 2: and what are you gonna do? And I go, well,
• 1:01:01
Speaker 2: I'm gonna be an NFL liked coach one day, but
• 1:01:04
Speaker 2: this conversations for another day. Yes, And you know, we
• 1:01:09
Speaker 2: laugh about it all the time. We played against each
• 1:01:13
Speaker 2: other in twenty fourteen when I was the Ocia Jackson
• 1:01:16
Speaker 2: and we played against each other when I was at
• 1:01:18
Speaker 2: ball Shuston and O two and he was I mean.
• 1:01:22
Speaker 2: And obviously we still spend the summer ted time together.
• 1:01:26
Speaker 2: And it's an amazing story though, but that is the
• 1:01:28
Speaker 2: true is the true stories.
• 1:01:30
Speaker 1: So how he's twenty years old, not working in football
• 1:01:34
Speaker 1: at all and has a shirt on, like a button
• 1:01:36
Speaker 1: down shirt, brings in a briefcase and has all his
• 1:01:39
Speaker 1: draft lists and a highlighter. Well, there's probably a party
• 1:01:43
Speaker 1: going on in the front lawn and we're not talking
• 1:01:44
Speaker 1: a party in some small school, University of Florida party,
• 1:01:47
Speaker 1: and he's busy with that.
• 1:01:48
Speaker 2: I had to reevaluate my life at that moment. I
• 1:01:51
Speaker 2: want him to hire me if he's going to be
• 1:01:53
Speaker 2: an NFL GM. I have to come back and leave
• 1:01:55
Speaker 2: the party. I have to go to the orange juice.
• 1:01:57
Speaker 2: I can't be mixing anything at this point.
• 1:02:00
  Speaker 1: I love this.
• 1:02:01
Speaker 2: I love this. It's so good.
• 1:02:04
Speaker 1: All right, we'll wrap it a little bit. I have
• 1:02:06
Speaker 1: couple more quick rapid fire questions your funniest McVeigh football
• 1:02:11
Speaker 1: obsessed story, because I think that's what it is it's
• 1:02:14
Speaker 1: like this guy is wired different, but there's also comedy
• 1:02:17
Speaker 1: that comes out of it. Do you have a good
• 1:02:19
  Speaker 1: McVeigh story. You'd be like, all right, that's that's a
• 1:02:20
  Speaker 1: good one.
• 1:02:21
Speaker 2: I mean I think I think the best ones are.
• 1:02:25
Speaker 2: You know, you you think you have this great idea. Okay,
• 1:02:29
Speaker 2: so you run it by Zach first, right, you have
• 1:02:31
Speaker 2: a couple like you drop this pass up and you're like,
• 1:02:33
Speaker 2: we're gonna do this, and you know this guy's gonna
• 1:02:35
Speaker 2: come wide open, right, and then you go into Zach
• 1:02:38
Speaker 2: Taylor's office, right, so he you know, he's checkbox A right, right, Zach,
• 1:02:43
Speaker 2: you like this. Oh yeah, that's a good one right there. Okay,
• 1:02:46
Speaker 2: good checkbox C. Going to Shane Waldon's office, all right, Shane,
• 1:02:49
Speaker 2: Before I go into the Big Cheese, I need your
• 1:02:52
Speaker 2: sign off. Oh yeah, that's a good one. Yeah, sign
• 1:02:55
Speaker 2: off on that walk into the office. You draw it up. Okay,
• 1:03:00
Speaker 2: Z's gonna run an in cut X, is gonna run
• 1:03:02
Speaker 2: a post. F's gonna run in Challa whatever it might be.
• 1:03:05
Speaker 2: And Sean's like, yeah, I like that. I like that.
• 1:03:08
Speaker 2: You know, just if we had Z running out cut
• 1:03:11
Speaker 2: X run of the corner totally he's like, I see
• 1:03:15
Speaker 2: that though, you see that? Do you like that one
• 1:03:18
  Speaker 2: a little bit better? It's a little bit I'm like,
• 1:03:20
Speaker 2: oh yeah, oh that's what I was thinking. Definitely better. Yeah,
• 1:03:24
Speaker 2: I walked it. How's that? You know? Then you get
• 1:03:27
Speaker 2: Shane and Zach just waiting for you because they know,
• 1:03:29
Speaker 2: right this is the routine. And he's like, how'd you
• 1:03:32
Speaker 2: think them? I go, yeah, wait, we're good, We're good
• 1:03:36
Speaker 2: pretty well. How many changes the routes? He said, well,
• 1:03:38
Speaker 2: you know, four of the five eligibles are running different
• 1:03:40
Speaker 2: routes than we walked in with. And they go, it's
• 1:03:43
Speaker 2: a win win. You would it's the best, and it
• 1:03:49
Speaker 2: makes you feel so good. You leave the office saying
• 1:03:53
  Speaker 2: it's exactly what I think I wanted. I just needed
• 1:03:56
Speaker 2: him to bring me to it.
• 1:03:57
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 1:03:58
Speaker 1: Here's another one. Cooper Cup walks out there as a
• 1:04:01
Speaker 1: third round pick. Did you know right away that this guy,
• 1:04:04
Speaker 1: like when you got your first eyes on him, this
• 1:04:06
Speaker 1: guy was for special or was that one where it's
• 1:04:08
Speaker 1: not it's not unnatural, it's that guy works for every
• 1:04:11
  Speaker 1: single place.
• 1:04:12
Speaker 2: You know. The bias was this I got there after
• 1:04:14
Speaker 2: year one, so he was there for a year. So
• 1:04:18
Speaker 2: you get the mcveigh's sales pitch immediately before you get
• 1:04:22
Speaker 2: on the practice field about how great Cooper. He goes, Wait, jet,
• 1:04:25
Speaker 2: wait till you see this guy we got, Wait till
• 1:04:28
Speaker 2: you see this Cooper cut, Wait till you see and
• 1:04:30
Speaker 2: then when you get out there, you're like, wow, he is.
• 1:04:32
Speaker 2: He's everything Sean just said he was. He's unbelievable. But
• 1:04:36
Speaker 2: he's unbelievable because of how already works, how smart he is,
• 1:04:41
Speaker 2: whatever deficiency he made, a had, he overcomes a ten X.
• 1:04:45
  Speaker 2: He's big, he's strong, he's fast, he's run after catch,
• 1:04:48
Speaker 2: is incredible. So you know, hats off to them taking
• 1:04:50
Speaker 2: him the third round. But I don't know questionable decisions
• 1:04:54
Speaker 2: by the one hundred and six people that didn't or
• 1:04:57
Speaker 2: whatever want because this guy's ridiculous.
• 1:05:00
Speaker 1: Yeah. I actually showed before the Super Bowl against the Bengals.
• 1:05:03
Speaker 1: I got footage from the Rams guys. I have footage
• 1:05:06
Speaker 1: of his Pro day workout and of all people, Zach
• 1:05:08
Speaker 1: Taylor's the quarterback throwing a rounds and then it was
• 1:05:11
Speaker 1: Taylor coaching again. It was pretty cool. It's pretty cool.
• 1:05:14
Speaker 1: I love that Belichick. Outside of the work area, I
• 1:05:19
Speaker 1: hear from all these coaches being like you would like Bill.
• 1:05:21
Speaker 1: Bill's great, He's funny. It's not. In my twenty years
• 1:05:25
Speaker 1: covering the sport, I have not had that interaction with him.
• 1:05:27
Speaker 1: Like He's been pleasant to me in meetings, but like
• 1:05:29
Speaker 1: I've not seen like funny Bill or cool Bill. But
• 1:05:31
Speaker 1: to a man, everyone says, Belichick is just a great
• 1:05:35
Speaker 1: hang and an awesome big brother or father figure. Your
• 1:05:39
Speaker 1: experience with Belichick off the coaching stuff, off.
• 1:05:41
Speaker 2: The field, you know, Amber and I spend spend at
• 1:05:45
Speaker 2: least a week every summer in Nantucket and get to
• 1:05:49
Speaker 2: spend so much time with him when we're there, and
• 1:05:52
Speaker 2: I'll just say, I mean he is everything to me
• 1:05:56
Speaker 2: in terms of like, you know, my dad passed away
• 1:06:00
Speaker 2: when I was thirty, and you know he'd be about
• 1:06:04
Speaker 2: the same age, you know, pretty close to Bill, maybe
• 1:06:09
Speaker 2: be a little older. But the calmness that Bill has
• 1:06:13
Speaker 2: is very similar to what my dad had, the intelligence,
• 1:06:15
Speaker 2: the way to speak to him, but on the same token.
• 1:06:18
Speaker 2: I mean, you take him off the field and you're
• 1:06:20
Speaker 2: able to talk stories and you're able to I mean,
• 1:06:23
Speaker 2: he's funny as could be. Man, he's funny, not knowing
• 1:06:25
Speaker 2: he's funny sometimes, but Amber loves him he's just a
• 1:06:30
Speaker 2: fantastic person. But what makes him so special is how
• 1:06:33
Speaker 2: much he cares about people. And I don't think everyone
• 1:06:36
Speaker 2: realizes that, but he is. Uh. He cares and it
• 1:06:40
Speaker 2: matters to him. And he's funny. Like I've been to
• 1:06:43
Speaker 2: music concerts with him. I've been to I almost went
• 1:06:45
Speaker 2: to that Swift concert with him. I missed it by
• 1:06:48
Speaker 2: like four hours. I was flying in and I just
• 1:06:51
Speaker 2: saw all over whatever his last radio show talking about
• 1:06:55
Speaker 2: Taylor Swift. But he's the man. He's fun, he's cool,
• 1:06:59
Speaker 2: and he wants to teach. He's a teacher.
• 1:07:02
Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. In closing your first game this season, who
• 1:07:07
Speaker 1: do you guys have?
• 1:07:08
  Speaker 2: When is it?
• 1:07:08
Speaker 1: And where can we find these Arizona Wildcats?
• 1:07:11
Speaker 2: Yeah? We got We open up next Saturday night against NAU.
• 1:07:15
Speaker 1: At our place, Northern Arizona.
• 1:07:17
Speaker 2: Northern Arizona PAC twelve Network there, seven pm kick and
• 1:07:21
Speaker 2: then we're going to Mississippi State.
• 1:07:24
Speaker 1: Really that's an interesting one. We okay, that's an interesting game.
• 1:07:26
Speaker 1: How does that come about? And I know the late
• 1:07:28
Speaker 1: Mike Leach was the coach?
• 1:07:29
Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know. These things get like you know,
• 1:07:32
Speaker 2: they get scheduled so far in advance. Yeah, but we
• 1:07:35
Speaker 2: played them last year, we were you know, we lost
• 1:07:38
Speaker 2: by a couple of scores, didn't play very well the
• 1:07:41
Speaker 2: second game of the year, and we got them this year.
• 1:07:45
Speaker 2: We gotta we gotta play better than we did. So
• 1:07:48
Speaker 2: that's a big game for us. You know, go to
• 1:07:49
Speaker 2: the sec C how well we can do and then
• 1:07:51
Speaker 2: you know, UTEP and Stanford and then we got Washington
• 1:07:55
Speaker 2: and USC back to back.
• 1:07:57
Speaker 1: So where where's the USC game? This USC, bro, I'm
• 1:08:02
Speaker 1: gonna go. I'm going to that game.
• 1:08:03
Speaker 2: It's yeah, Saturday, I'll be there. We'll be there the
• 1:08:06
Speaker 2: rams of a home game the next day. They do
• 1:08:08
Speaker 2: have a game the next day, and we play there
• 1:08:11
Speaker 2: on Saturday, October seventh on ESPN, and we got to
• 1:08:16
Speaker 2: play some really good football because last year they beat
• 1:08:19
Speaker 2: us by eight forty five thirty seven I remember hying
• 1:08:22
  Speaker 2: touchdowns combined. So I hope it's I hope it's a
• 1:08:26
Speaker 2: game where we all play our best.
• 1:08:28
Speaker 1: Dude, I appreciate you taking the time. You guys have
• 1:08:31
Speaker 1: a football game next week and you're sitting here for
• 1:08:32
Speaker 1: an hour relishing me with Pete Carroll stories. The listeners
• 1:08:36
Speaker 1: are going to love this, Jeded. I could have done
• 1:08:38
Speaker 1: this for two hours. This is what it's like when
• 1:08:39
Speaker 1: we hang and can't thank you enough. Dude, good luck
• 1:08:43
Speaker 1: this season and good luck and bear down how that sounds.
• 1:08:45
Speaker 2: I love it, man, appreciate you. Thanks Peter, thanks for
• 1:08:48
Speaker 2: having me on by the best.
• 1:08:49
Speaker 1: I'm gonna start rocking some Arizona football gear. I think, Jed,
• 1:08:51
Speaker 1: I hope that's okay. I love it. Jed Fish maybe
• 1:08:54
Speaker 1: my favorite guest on this podcast. And here's what I say, Aaron,
• 1:08:58
Speaker 1: because I think the listeners might have clicked on this
• 1:09:00
Speaker 1: fan like, oh, Arizona coach. I guess I know that guy.
• 1:09:03
Speaker 1: I knew there was NFL golden there, but I realize
• 1:09:07
Speaker 1: he'd be able to storytell like he did. And gosh,
• 1:09:10
Speaker 1: I could sit at the hip of Jed Fish and
• 1:09:11
Speaker 1: listen to stories for the next two hours.
• 1:09:14
Speaker 3: Yeah, and he'd hit so many like every time. I
• 1:09:16
Speaker 3: was like, wow, that's an impressive coach that he worked with.
• 1:09:18
Speaker 3: And I was like, oh wow. And McVeigh okay, but
• 1:09:21
Speaker 3: I mean he never worked for Bell. Oh no, he
• 1:09:23
Speaker 3: worked like it just kept going. He was great.
• 1:09:26
Speaker 1: Yeah, it's cool. I'm excited. I think when the ref
• 1:09:28
  Speaker 1: Arizona the year I don't have a team, I went
• 1:09:29
Speaker 1: to Emory Division III school. You went to a small

Speaker 1: school as well, right, no football, we.
• 1:09:34
Speaker 3: Had a football team. I went to one football game
• 1:09:37
Speaker 3: I went to I think our first home coming.
• 1:09:38
Speaker 1: Well it was the school called that. You went to
• 1:09:40
Speaker 1: Carlton College and that's in Minnesota. Yes, and they have
• 1:09:42
Speaker 1: school Division III football.
• 1:09:44
  Speaker 2: What is it?
• 1:09:45
Speaker 3: I don't even know what division we are. The only
• 1:09:48
Speaker 3: time we really made the news for football was like
• 1:09:52
Speaker 3: that we had a game. This is not why I
• 1:09:54
Speaker 3: was there, and it got called off because the score
• 1:09:57
Speaker 3: was so high like ESPN was reporting I think it
• 1:10:00
Speaker 3: was it was tripled in it was a loss. Oh yes,
• 1:10:03
Speaker 3: oh yeah, it was a loss.
• 1:10:05
Speaker 1: Oh my gosh. Yeah.
• 1:10:06
  Speaker 2: So like.
• 1:10:09
  Speaker 1: I don't have a time. I mean, my wife went
• 1:10:10
Speaker 1: to Michigan. So I'm always pulling for Blue and I
• 1:10:13
Speaker 1: go for that. But like, I don't know, I work
• 1:10:14
Speaker 1: at Fox and a lot of those guys are USC guys,
• 1:10:17
Speaker 1: and so I'm like, all right, let's see them happy.
• 1:10:18
Speaker 1: But we've got two Arizona guy. I don't know if
• 1:10:21
Speaker 1: you know, Jason Kleinman, who works on the LA desk
• 1:10:23
Speaker 1: and does all the great digital stuff for us, and
• 1:10:26
Speaker 1: Matt Schneider, who also works with the NFL media group
• 1:10:29
Speaker 1: both hit me up before we had jed on or
• 1:10:32
Speaker 1: like bear down. So I think I'm putting my weight
• 1:10:34
Speaker 1: behind Jaden Delora and the Arizona Wildcats this year.
• 1:10:38
Speaker 3: I was excited to hear him talk about the Laura.
• 1:10:41
Speaker 3: I've never I do not follow college football, and I
• 1:10:44
Speaker 3: am excited to see this kid now.
• 1:10:45
Speaker 1: I mean that was he was all in on, very
• 1:10:48
Speaker 1: very high praise for Jaden Dolores. We get Jaden DeLaura jerseys. Yeah,
• 1:10:54
Speaker 1: it could be a moment in time if they lose
• 1:10:56
Speaker 1: to Utup or they went to Northern Arizona in seven
• 1:11:00
Speaker 1: days and they lose by thirty.
• 1:11:02
  Speaker 2: That was fun?
• 1:11:04
Speaker 1: Was I insulting when I said the forest? Is that
• 1:11:07
Speaker 1: like a I know Forrest Gump isn't exactly the greatest praise,
• 1:11:09
Speaker 1: but I meant the way his life just intersects all
• 1:11:12
  Speaker 1: these coaches.
• 1:11:12
Speaker 3: Oh no, I think that was good. I also, I
• 1:11:14
Speaker 3: feel like Forrest Gump is more endearing. Okay maybe now
• 1:11:20
Speaker 3: than I would have ten years ago.
• 1:11:22
  Speaker 2: I don't know.
• 1:11:22
Speaker 1: I'm not entire the Storest Gump thing. It felt like
• 1:11:24
Speaker 1: he's like he almost stepped in. That's what I'm saying.
• 1:11:26
Speaker 1: Like Forrest Gump didn't earn any of that. He kind
• 1:11:28
Speaker 1: of just was like there and it's like, here's the stories.
• 1:11:32
Speaker 1: Jed's earned everything. So Jedfish Arizona football. Who knew. I'm
• 1:11:36
Speaker 1: all in. I got two teams this year. I'm rooting
• 1:11:39
Speaker 1: for Nebraska because of Matt Rule, because he came on
• 1:11:42
Speaker 1: the show and it was awesome. I was throwing flames.
• 1:11:44
Speaker 1: We love that, and Jedfish for Arizona. If they happen
• 1:11:48
Speaker 1: to play in the college football playoffs, I will be torn,
• 1:11:50
Speaker 1: but we'll be going. I'll buy a ticket for you
• 1:11:52
Speaker 1: and me and we'll go. Jason, We'll go. We'll be
• 1:11:54
Speaker 1: all right on behalf of Jason English, who's in here
• 1:11:58
Speaker 1: and always so quiet but such a great man and
• 1:12:00
Speaker 1: so supportive from iHeart and you, Aaron and the aforementioned
• 1:12:05
Speaker 1: Jason Kleinman and Matt and Meredith Batton and the crew
• 1:12:08
Speaker 1: at LA and all of you who listen.
• 1:12:11
  Speaker 2: Thank you.
• 1:12:12
Speaker 1: If you bump into Ed Sheeran, don't say that he saw.
• 1:12:15
  Speaker 1: I don't know if he knows my name. I don't
• 1:12:16
Speaker 1: want to be embarrassed and be like who, Just give
• 1:12:19
Speaker 1: him a nod. He's pretty friendly. And if this was
• 1:12:21
Speaker 1: a free commercial for Luke Collie. That's okay because you're
• 1:12:24
Speaker 1: not getting a table anyway. It's impossibly. You got to
• 1:12:25
Speaker 1: go like three o'clock. So if you're in Brooklyn, give
• 1:12:27
Speaker 1: it a shot. This was the Season with Peter Schrager.
• 1:12:31
Speaker 1: Plenty more stuff happening. I see the Giants just traded
• 1:12:33
  Speaker 1: for Isaiah.
• 1:12:33
Speaker 3: Simmons, seventh round pick.
• 1:12:35
Speaker 1: I think okay that they do. Trey Lance was a miss.
• 1:12:39
Speaker 1: Isaiah Simmons was a top ten pick. I knew the Cardinals.
• 1:12:41
Speaker 1: We're calling around a little bit and seeing who's interested.
