- 0:38Speaker 4: Our nuclear reactor pumping out.
- 0:42Speaker 3: One million kilowatts of power. What's up and welcome to
- 1:10Speaker 3: Movie Meltdown.
- 1:10Speaker 1: I'm Brian.
- 1:11Speaker 5: I'm Gina. And I'm Paul John.
- 1:13Speaker 4: And we're coming to you live via digital.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Recording from Blue Jay Way. Sure.
- 1:35Speaker 6: I remember.
- 1:35Speaker 1: I can't believe you remember that.
- 1:37Speaker 2: It's been a long time since I've been here with
- 1:39Speaker 2: you guys. How's it going?
- 1:41Speaker 6: Well, several Blue Jays have died since then.
- 1:44Speaker 2: I took no responsibilities.
- 1:46Speaker 1: We also had two squirrel funerals this weekend.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Are you just taking out yard animals?
- 1:52Speaker 1: No, we don't know.
- 1:53Speaker 6: There was like a hawk massacre. Something strange.
- 1:57Speaker 1: We got some hawk action.
- 1:58Speaker 6: Something strange is afoot.
- 1:59Speaker 2: There's a monster back in those trees over there is
- 2:01Speaker 2: what you're telling me.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Actually, there really is. It's a pretty gnarly hawk that
- 2:05Speaker 1: eats everything. Our bunny count is way down.
- 2:07Speaker 6: You're assuming that that's a hawk.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Assuming that's a hawk.
- 2:10Speaker 6: You've not seen it in action this year.
- 2:14Speaker 1: But other years.
- 2:16Speaker 2: What you're saying, look at those trees out there. Somewhere
- 2:20Speaker 2: there's a cryptid hiding out there. And just tearing apart
- 2:24Speaker 2: squirrels and hawks and blue jays and.
- 2:27Speaker 6: Well, that's the strange part is the squirrels were intact.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Completely intact.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Well, he tore them apart and then put them back
- 2:34Speaker 2: together just like that. He's a crafty bastard.
- 2:38Speaker 6: Dissolving sutures.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Oh, I thought he just super glued them.
- 2:43Speaker 7: Super glue.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Just super glue.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Super glue works pretty good for that kind of stuff.
- 2:46Speaker 6: That's kind of messy. Because you walk around with a
- 2:49Speaker 6: squirrel stuck to your hand for 48 hours.
- 2:54Speaker 2: It bonds instantly.
- 2:55Speaker 6: I hate this stuff.
- 2:56Speaker 2: I need nail polish remover. That's when he breaks in
- 2:59Speaker 2: and gets your nail polisher. Yeah.
- 3:02Speaker 6: You did run out of nail polish.
- 3:03Speaker 2: I did.
- 3:04Speaker 7: Oh, yeah.
- 3:04Speaker 1: I don't know where it all went.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Suddenly it all disappeared. Well, this monster in the woods
- 3:11Speaker 2: fits in perfectly because I was thinking we've been like
- 3:16Speaker 2: edging our way up to Halloween these last couple episodes.
- 3:19Speaker 2: But this week we're in the middle of October. We're
- 3:22Speaker 2: right here. It's happening. Crossed over into the October land. So.
- 3:28Speaker 1: It's my favorite.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Maybe we should embrace it and discuss some Halloween-y things.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Maybe some horror movies.
- 3:36Speaker 1: You know what should be a horror movie? Pumpkin spice everything.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Like you would walk into a world where everything.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Is pumpkin spice.
- 3:44Speaker 1: It's like my ultimate nightmare.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Everybody else has gotten to the point they want to
- 3:47Speaker 2: complain about it. Now I'm just full on. I'm like,
- 3:49Speaker 2: let's go. What else? What else can you make? Bring
- 3:52Speaker 2: me the pumpkin spice, Charmin. Let's do it. Yeah.
- 3:54Speaker 1: I mean, it's everything. And it's so like insulting. I'm
- 3:57Speaker 1: so insulted by pumpkin spice.
- 3:58Speaker 2: You say that. Tomorrow when I'm enjoying my pumpkin spice
- 4:01Speaker 2: frosted flakes, I will do that, which is a thing
- 4:04Speaker 2: I saw this week.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Really?
- 4:06Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. See? It is a thing. Pumpkin Spice Frosted Flakes,
- 4:10Speaker 2: Pumpkin Spice Cheerios, both of which I've seen, in addition
- 4:14Speaker 2: to all the monster cereals you should already be buying in.
- 4:17Speaker 6: Droves at this point. Just load up on them. You
- 4:20Speaker 6: will enjoy the Pumpkin Spice.
- 4:21Speaker 2: You will.
- 4:23Speaker 6: He who controls the Pumpkin Spice controls the white women.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Controls all. I realized as I was having, and this
- 4:31Speaker 2: is true, yesterday, as I was having my Pumpkin Spice Twinkie, That, like,
- 4:36Speaker 2: really anything works better if you jam some sort of
- 4:39Speaker 2: seasonal thing into it. And better put, this is my
- 4:42Speaker 2: favorite on food items, limited edition.
- 4:45Speaker 6: Oh. Oh.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Limited edition pumpkin spice Twinkies, mind you. Wow.
- 4:52Speaker 6: So if you bought that, you know, pumpkin spice Cheerios,
- 4:57Speaker 6: limited edition.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Limited edition.
- 4:59Speaker 6: And did not open the box and put it on
- 5:00Speaker 6: a shelf. Yeah.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Wouldn't be the first time I've done that with a
- 5:03Speaker 2: food item.
- 5:04Speaker 6: In 40 years, would it, you know, be worth anything?
- 5:07Speaker 1: Because it's limited edition.
- 5:08Speaker 2: It says limited edition. Right on.
- 5:11Speaker 6: On open, I'd like to point out.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Mint in box.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:15Speaker 6: You'd have to, you know, you'd have to, you know,
- 5:17Speaker 6: seal it in a container so that the box didn't
- 5:21Speaker 6: fade or anything.
- 5:21Speaker 2: I'd get an acrylic, you know, Twinkie box holder. Like,
- 5:24Speaker 2: you know, you get for all your pops and your
- 5:26Speaker 2: action figures, but you know. Well, then you keep it
- 5:29Speaker 2: in a dark room. Come on.
- 5:30Speaker 1: You buy two of them.
- 5:31Speaker 7: You have one to show.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Geeks don't see the light of day.
- 5:33Speaker 1: You keep two of them. You have one that you
- 5:35Speaker 1: keep out, and then you have another.
- 5:36Speaker 2: That you keep. The one you get to.
- 5:39Speaker 7: Play with.
- 5:39Speaker 8: Come on, Twinkies.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Let's go. Crinkle, crinkle, crinkle.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Then the one you put away. That's how it works.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Pretend like geeks see the light of day. Come on now.
- 5:47Speaker 2: That's not how we roll.
- 5:50Speaker 6: So, yes. Basement pumpkin spice Twinkies.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Those are the many of my pumpkin spice adventures as
- 5:56Speaker 2: of late.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what I hate about this season.
- 6:00Speaker 2: It's ruined it for me.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Don't fight it.
- 6:01Speaker 7: Embrace the season.
- 6:03Speaker 6: Well, you know, this afternoon.
- 6:05Speaker 2: I love the season.
- 6:06Speaker 6: This afternoon we saw pumpkin undershorts. Like, with a jack-o'-lantern
- 6:13Speaker 6: right at the crotch.
- 6:14Speaker 2: You're assuming I'm not wearing those right now?
- 6:16Speaker 6: No, I'm not assuming that. But we saw them, and
- 6:19Speaker 6: they were satiny.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Sorry about that. I thought your guys were gone.
- 6:23Speaker 1: I bet they don't really breathe. It's that, like, cheap, weird, satiny.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Lycra.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Non-breathing pumpkin boxers.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Polyester pumpkin shorts.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Polyester pumpkin pants.
- 6:35Speaker 2: What we need are good cotton underwears. With pumpkins. Yeah. Yeah,
- 6:41Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 6:42Speaker 6: I can't imagine anyone taking anyone else seriously wearing them.
- 6:46Speaker 6: And I guess that's the point, I suppose. You can't
- 6:50Speaker 6: wear those out on the street on Halloween, you know,
- 6:53Speaker 6: just by themselves. That would be bad.
- 6:55Speaker 2: If you pair it up with something else, you know,
- 6:58Speaker 2: you could find a way to be random weirdo in
- 7:00Speaker 2: their underwear wandering the neighborhood. You know, you just got
- 7:03Speaker 2: to come up with the right angle. You got to
- 7:05Speaker 2: put the right spin on this outfit.
- 7:06Speaker 1: You could be a failed Fruit of the Loom character. Oh, right.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, if those leaves made it in, how
- 7:13Speaker 2: the hell is pumpkin getting kicked out? I mean, come on.
- 7:16Speaker 6: Well, yeah, yeah.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Can you name all the fruits?
- 7:19Speaker 2: How many grapes do we need, by the way?
- 7:21Speaker 6: Fruit of the loom, you know, used to be fruit
- 7:24Speaker 6: and vegetable of the loom, but they had too many
- 7:27Speaker 6: weird vegetables.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Was it an apple? That was the weird one.
- 7:31Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 7:31Speaker 1: It was like an apple and tights, right?
- 7:33Speaker 2: And too many grapes. And there were too many grapes.
- 7:35Speaker 2: There were no bananas. Yeah, no banana, which seems like
- 7:38Speaker 2: the most obvious one.
- 7:39Speaker 1: That would be the obvious one.
- 7:40Speaker 2: But yet, like, two bunches of grapes. And then who
- 7:44Speaker 2: brought leaves? Like, why are there just random leaves showing
- 7:47Speaker 2: up to our party?
- 7:48Speaker 1: Because they cover your business.
- 7:50Speaker 2: This isn't the eating party. But why an apple?
- 7:54Speaker 1: I don't understand Fruit of the Loom. And why isn't
- 7:56Speaker 1: it a cereal?
- 7:59Speaker 2: New grape and apple flavor. Now with more leaves.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Limited edition.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Limited edition.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Fruit of the loom cereal.
- 8:06Speaker 6: Yes. Apple.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Grapes and grapes.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Grapes and grapes.
- 8:10Speaker 6: And a gourd.
- 8:11Speaker 2: What? Now they're trying to be fancy.
- 8:15Speaker 1: It's a cornucopia.
- 8:16Speaker 2: Well, this is, again, season's greetings.
- 8:20Speaker 6: Lots of leaves.
- 8:21Speaker 2: You know what comes out of a cornucopia is just
- 8:23Speaker 2: tons of underwear.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Underwear that's where they're made in cornucopias by little elves
- 8:32Speaker 1: it's like if you fail as a Keebler elf you're
- 8:35Speaker 1: sent off to the cornucopia underwear farm oh wow I used.
- 8:42Speaker 6: To have an enjoyable life as a cookie maker.
- 8:45Speaker 1: I couldn't bake I was terrible now all I do
- 8:47Speaker 1: is make underwear.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Yikes I'm not gonna go there It's for the best, really. So,
- 8:57Speaker 2: have you seen any movies? Specifically, have you seen any
- 9:02Speaker 2: creepy Halloween-y movies?
- 9:03Speaker 1: We were just talking about that. We're starting that tomorrow.
- 9:08Speaker 6: Yes.
- 9:09Speaker 1: It's the official start of our Halloween viewing season. What
- 9:13Speaker 1: did we watch that was really terrible?
- 9:16Speaker 2: I can't imagine. We've never watched a terrible movie.
- 9:18Speaker 1: We watched a horror thing. Horror thing.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Horror thing.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Horror thing. We did watch this thing on Netflix called,
- 9:27Speaker 1: what was it? It was like you were the character
- 9:29Speaker 1: and it was this weird Russian.
- 9:31Speaker 2: Oh, yes. Hardcore Henry.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Yeah, we started that and I just was like, I can't.
- 9:37Speaker 2: It's a lot of motion.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:38Speaker 6: It's a lot of running and best viewed on a
- 9:42Speaker 6: very small screen.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Probably. Yeah, I heard stories of people not doing well
- 9:47Speaker 2: in theaters.
- 9:48Speaker 8: Really?
- 9:48Speaker 2: With a giant immersive screen. Bouncing around Image constantly.
- 9:53Speaker 1: So that was pretty bad.
- 9:54Speaker 6: It was like, you know, Blair Witch Project on crap.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Yeah, it is kind of.
- 9:59Speaker 6: Shaky canvas.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Galore it's like local local football video.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Yeah but that is the one i dad hold the
- 10:08Speaker 2: camera still i will almost give credit to only because
- 10:12Speaker 2: i think because they didn't if unless i'm making up
- 10:16Speaker 2: the stories i heard they didn't shoot it here So
- 10:18Speaker 2: they didn't have to abide by like American rules. So
- 10:21Speaker 2: some of those times, and it looks like they almost
- 10:23Speaker 2: killed somebody.
- 10:24Speaker 1: They probably almost killed somebody.
- 10:25Speaker 2: They almost killed somebody. I think they shot it in Russia,
- 10:27Speaker 2: which means no fucking rules. So, like, I'm pretty sure.
- 10:30Speaker 6: There was a scene there where he knocks a woman
- 10:33Speaker 6: down in the escalator headed to the subway. And it
- 10:36Speaker 6: looks like she hits her face right in the escalator stair.
- 10:39Speaker 6: Probably did.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Rest in peace to that actress.
- 10:41Speaker 6: And it looked very, very painful.
- 10:44Speaker 8: Wow.
- 10:44Speaker 6: If not life-changing.
- 10:46Speaker 2: I don't think they would have gotten away with under
- 10:48Speaker 2: current rules in, like.
- 10:49Speaker 6: A normal.
- 10:51Speaker 2: What's the problem? Another Hollywood situation.
- 10:53Speaker 6: I don't know why they became Italian, but that's as
- 10:55Speaker 6: close as I can get to Russian accent.
- 10:57Speaker 1: He's probably an Italian director.
- 10:59Speaker 6: Yeah, probably.
- 11:01Speaker 1: No, I mean, I just was like, this is not
- 11:03Speaker 1: even enjoyable to me for some reason. I'm like, I
- 11:06Speaker 1: can't even enjoy this.
- 11:08Speaker 6: It was mildly entertaining.
- 11:10Speaker 1: I'll tell you what is on our list of things
- 11:12Speaker 1: that we're going to watch. And this is not a
- 11:14Speaker 1: horror film.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Have you seen these before?
- 11:18Speaker 1: No.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Okay. Then we'll get to some other ones later. What
- 11:20Speaker 2: are your upcoming anticipated viewings?
- 11:23Speaker 1: Holy Mountain.
- 11:26Speaker 2: I think a lot of people might disagree. You might
- 11:28Speaker 2: land on horror after you're done.
- 11:32Speaker 1: My understanding is that it's more absurdist than horror.
- 11:35Speaker 6: Surreal? Surreal, yeah.
- 11:37Speaker 1: So that's in our queue. Yeah, yeah.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Again, you might be horrified at many turns. And that's
- 11:45Speaker 2: sort of what I know of the reputation.
- 11:48Speaker 6: We watched.
- 11:49Speaker 2: santa sangre on a oh i haven't seen that years.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Ago yeah i haven't seen that in a long time.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Again it's impressive and it's both things like on the
- 11:59Speaker 2: one hand it's like yes you can see it's very
- 12:01Speaker 2: like interesting and arthousey but then it does not shy
- 12:07Speaker 2: away from gore when.
- 12:08Speaker 1: It's super gory but it's like really beautifully shot yeah
- 12:13Speaker 1: i thought it looks.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Pretty great yeah it looks awesome That one's the most
- 12:16Speaker 2: we've officially dove into that director.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. You know, I haven't seen that since it
- 12:21Speaker 1: came out. It's pretty cool. I saw it when it
- 12:23Speaker 1: came out, and God, I feel old. I think I
- 12:25Speaker 1: was in college.
- 12:26Speaker 2: Back in the day.
- 12:27Speaker 1: I was probably in high school.
- 12:30Speaker 6: Grade school.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Was it grade school?
- 12:32Speaker 2: Watching Santa's Song.
- 12:33Speaker 1: I can believe it.
- 12:34Speaker 2: That's why you're this messed up.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Yeah, that and Blue Velvet have done this to me.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Oh, that's enough to do it.
- 12:38Speaker 1: Blue Velvet as a child.
- 12:39Speaker 2: That's enough to do it.
- 12:41Speaker 1: But yeah, that's a great, great film.
- 12:43Speaker 2: So are there others on this list?
- 12:45Speaker 1: Well, with that would be El Topo.
- 12:47Speaker 6: All right.
- 12:48Speaker 2: A little more Western-y. Yeah, but same director.
- 12:50Speaker 1: I'm not looking forward to that.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Really?
- 12:53Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't think El Topo holds any appeal to me.
- 12:56Speaker 6: Holy Mountain actually is pretty intriguing, you know, both cinematography
- 13:04Speaker 6: and the subject matter. But El Topo, you know.
- 13:08Speaker 1: A surrealist Western doesn't.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Speak to you?
- 13:12Speaker 6: Eh, eh. What's his name? Oh, God. Clint? No. John?
- 13:21Speaker 2: Dave?
- 13:23Speaker 8: Bill?
- 13:24Speaker 2: Bob?
- 13:26Speaker 6: Behold, a man named Clint. God, why can't I think
- 13:32Speaker 6: of the director's name? Tarantino.
- 13:35Speaker 7: Oh, okay.
- 13:35Speaker 6: Tarantino has already done the surrealist Western.
- 13:41Speaker 2: He's gotten on a Western kick as of late. And
- 13:43Speaker 2: I mean that of two movies because he works kind
- 13:46Speaker 2: of slow. But when you'd only make a handful of
- 13:49Speaker 2: movies and the last two have essentially been Westerns, it
- 13:53Speaker 2: sort of paints you into that corner. So it'll be
- 13:56Speaker 2: interesting when he does a Star Trek movie or whatever
- 13:58Speaker 2: he's got planned.
- 13:59Speaker 6: Now, I would be interested to see a Tarantino sci-fi film.
- 14:03Speaker 2: That's what he wants to do. He wants to do
- 14:05Speaker 2: Star Trek. Really? Yep. I don't know if they've officially
- 14:09Speaker 2: decided to let him, but Star Trek's kind of off
- 14:13Speaker 2: on its own thing now anyway, so they can do
- 14:16Speaker 2: whatever they want.
- 14:17Speaker 6: Well, it could use a Tarantino touch. I could see
- 14:21Speaker 6: that being either really.
- 14:27Speaker 6: Successful or horribly uh you know horrible failure.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Do you make it in this current timeline and or
- 14:34Speaker 2: group of casting characters you couldn't.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Because everybody would die so you'd have to make it
- 14:38Speaker 1: or maybe that's how.
- 14:39Speaker 2: We round out this current group of characters.
- 14:42Speaker 1: I'm just imagining like hateful eight set on yeah.
- 14:46Speaker 6: You just need to stock up on red shirts so
- 14:48Speaker 6: that you can kill them all off.
- 14:50Speaker 2: But technically this is its own alternate timeline so it
- 14:54Speaker 2: doesn't have to end the way that we know the
- 14:57Speaker 2: Kirk and Spock and all those storylines end up in
- 15:00Speaker 2: the older movies like this is an alternate timeline we
- 15:03Speaker 2: could just off them all in one Tarantino outing yeah
- 15:06Speaker 2: yeah oh hurrah.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Gone expendable done all of them.
- 15:13Speaker 2: The expendables that's another thing that's a totally different that's a.
- 15:16Speaker 1: Whole different thing Well, and then we did start watching
- 15:21Speaker 1: Space Cowboys. Is that what you put on?
- 15:24Speaker 2: That's just old age horror.
- 15:25Speaker 1: And I said, I was like, I can't even watch this.
- 15:28Speaker 1: It's just people complaining about being old in space.
- 15:32Speaker 6: And it was a horror film. It was an interesting
- 15:35Speaker 6: exercise in that I hadn't seen it since it was
- 15:39Speaker 6: in the theaters, right? So whatever that was, 1992, maybe?
- 15:44Speaker 2: Maybe a little later. Yeah, later 90s.
- 15:46Speaker 6: Anyway. Yeah, it did not hold the appeal that it
- 15:52Speaker 6: did in that era.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Oh, I could not do it. I was like, you
- 15:55Speaker 1: have got to turn this off. But we happened on
- 15:56Speaker 1: this weird B-movie kick, but for some reason I can't
- 15:59Speaker 1: think of anything that we've watched.
- 16:01Speaker 6: Well, because most of them are forgettable.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Yeah, but I think it's just because we had company
- 16:05Speaker 1: all week long that my brain is fried.
- 16:07Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:10Speaker 6: But we could go the route of what we're planning
- 16:14Speaker 6: to watch for the upcoming... For our march toward Halloween,
- 16:19Speaker 6: which I think Wakewood would fall into that category. But
- 16:23Speaker 6: I think we've talked about that before. I think we
- 16:25Speaker 6: have too.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Isn't that your small town craziness?
- 16:27Speaker 1: Yeah, my weird love of small town, small British town craziness.
- 16:30Speaker 2: I think we touched on that last season.
- 16:32Speaker 6: Folklore, I think, is the genre, the sub-genre, which I'm
- 16:37Speaker 6: a huge fan of. I love folklore.
- 16:39Speaker 2: If there's.
- 16:42Speaker 6: Some sort of... pagan ritual involved or we're.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Probably all over it we're probably like hey.
- 16:47Speaker 6: I want to see that you know um standing stone
- 16:51Speaker 6: uh megalithic mysticism that i'm i'm all in actually that
- 16:55Speaker 6: sounds great but see that.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Brings me to the question about horror films right like
- 17:00Speaker 1: there seems to be two very definite splits there's people
- 17:04Speaker 1: who like weird kind of psychological stuff which even gets
- 17:09Speaker 1: terrible and then there's people who just like straight up
- 17:11Speaker 1: like Clinical. Clinical violence.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Blood and gore.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Yeah, but the new blood and gore isn't as fun
- 17:17Speaker 1: as the old stuff because it is so clinical. Like,
- 17:20Speaker 1: it looks like probably what it would look like if some,
- 17:24Speaker 1: you know, these terrible things really happened to people. So
- 17:26Speaker 1: you lose that, like.
- 17:27Speaker 6: The original Friday the 13th versus Saw, for example.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, you lose the, like, thinking about how
- 17:34Speaker 1: horrible that is instead of seeing how horrible... in gruesome something.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Could be if someone filtered it through a 1980s what
- 17:44Speaker 2: can I make out of latex lens yeah that we
- 17:46Speaker 2: don't really get anymore we.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Don't get that anymore and I think that that's kind
- 17:50Speaker 1: of it's a lost art I mean it's some of
- 17:52Speaker 1: it was super.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Cheesy there's still people trying to do it but yeah
- 17:55Speaker 2: it's it's almost its own little throwback subgenre.
- 17:58Speaker 8: Yeah like people that are like we're going all practical yeah.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Yeah so that's kind of a weird thing to me
- 18:04Speaker 1: but I mean I do like horror films a lot
- 18:06Speaker 1: but sometimes I'm just like you know I don't need to.
- 18:08Speaker 6: See a You know, there's an element, I was just,
- 18:12Speaker 6: side topic here. I was thinking about Friday the 13th,
- 18:16Speaker 6: the original one. You know, and there's a scene there,
- 18:18Speaker 6: and it's sort of an idea that is present in
- 18:26Speaker 6: almost all horror films, where Jason is.
- 18:33Speaker 6: At, you know, Camp Crystal Lake.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Or, sort of. I was going to say, it depends
- 18:38Speaker 2: on if we're still talking about the person.
- 18:40Speaker 6: Right, right, right.
- 18:40Speaker 2: But, you know, spoilers for something in 1980. Right.
- 18:44Speaker 6: We don't want to give it away. But anyway, the
- 18:48Speaker 6: murderer is in the cabins. lying underneath one of the beds,
- 18:57Speaker 6: which happens sometimes, just sitting there waiting for Kevin Bacon
- 19:04Speaker 6: and the other, his female counselor counterpart, to come in
- 19:08Speaker 6: and get naked and start doing stuff before he, you know,
- 19:11Speaker 6: stabs him through the mattress. How, I mean, how practical
- 19:17Speaker 6: is it to really just sit there and wait for
- 19:19Speaker 6: that long?
- 19:20Speaker 2: And, you know, so... Patience is a virtue when you're
- 19:24Speaker 2: a murderer. I do really kind of just see Jason,
- 19:27Speaker 2: and we're going to picture Jason because it's funnier, just
- 19:30Speaker 2: full giant Jason with the mask on, just kind of
- 19:33Speaker 2: looking at his watch under the bed, and he has
- 19:35Speaker 2: to turn on the little light because, again, it's a
- 19:37Speaker 2: 1980s watch.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Is it like a Casio one?
- 19:38Speaker 2: It's got that little side light that only kind of
- 19:40Speaker 2: half lights up the numbers.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Is it a calculator one too?
- 19:42Speaker 2: Your kids won't understand this, but old people are laughing
- 19:45Speaker 2: because it's i could only see the eight wait a
- 19:48Speaker 2: minute person and you got it so.
- 19:52Speaker 1: You're talking about the the excuse to show boobs in
- 19:55Speaker 1: horror films in the 80s.
- 19:57Speaker 6: Well no that's not what i'm talking about but that.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Is included that has never gone out of style right
- 20:02Speaker 1: like that set the tone.
- 20:04Speaker 6: But that is also involved so i mean it's a
- 20:06Speaker 6: mechanism sure to Wait until counselors or what have you
- 20:11Speaker 6: get naked.
- 20:12Speaker 1: And get into a.
- 20:14Speaker 6: Cramped cabin bed scenario. And he's just sitting there the
- 20:20Speaker 6: whole time waiting. I know they're going to go to
- 20:22Speaker 6: this bed. I know they're going to go to this bed.
- 20:25Speaker 2: Yeah, what if they went in another cabin?
- 20:28Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 20:29Speaker 2: They're like 12 hours later.
- 20:31Speaker 1: And he got stuck beneath the flatulent camp counselor.
- 20:35Speaker 2: Right.
- 20:36Speaker 6: Well, he gets killed early on, I'm sure.
- 20:39Speaker 2: We know for that reason alone.
- 20:41Speaker 6: But, you know, it requires a lot of, you know,
- 20:44Speaker 6: thinking ahead if you're going to be a, you know,
- 20:47Speaker 6: mass serial killer.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Yeah. And a lot of, again, patience. You just have
- 20:52Speaker 2: to decide and then lay in wait and then attack.
- 20:57Speaker 1: I always feel weird talking about horror movies because there
- 21:00Speaker 1: are so many, like, super horror fans that they are, like,
- 21:03Speaker 1: the– Insane. Star Trek nerds.
- 21:06Speaker 2: I'm around them a lot. I may or may not
- 21:09Speaker 2: be one to some extent. It's a thing.
- 21:11Speaker 1: It's a real thing. So I feel really pedestrian when
- 21:14Speaker 1: I'm like, well, you know.
- 21:15Speaker 2: I think that's okay because I think that is, number one,
- 21:19Speaker 2: I think it is the way more people than not.
- 21:22Speaker 2: I think that it is a smaller group of hardcore
- 21:25Speaker 2: fans like that. But at the same time, I think
- 21:28Speaker 2: you also, and this is what people are always like,
- 21:30Speaker 2: even just talking about film in general, like, well, I'm
- 21:32Speaker 2: not an authority on it. I'm like, you know, you
- 21:34Speaker 2: probably come up with better stuff. Like somebody brought that up,
- 21:38Speaker 2: they're like, I don't know how officially schooled I am
- 21:42Speaker 2: to talk about film. I'm like, some of the most
- 21:46Speaker 2: schooled people I've talked to over the years are kind
- 21:48Speaker 2: of the worst at doing this stuff. Whereas people who
- 21:52Speaker 2: don't do this sometimes have a totally different perspective and
- 21:55Speaker 2: come up with way more interesting, like, a look at
- 21:59Speaker 2: something that normally you wouldn't get from somebody who's immersed
- 22:01Speaker 2: in it 24-7.
- 22:02Speaker 1: But, I mean, horror fans are, like, rabid.
- 22:04Speaker 6: Oh, they are. I tell you what, we're not going
- 22:07Speaker 6: to be watching this autumn anything with fucking zombies in it.
- 22:11Speaker 1: I'm zombied out, man.
- 22:13Speaker 2: Zombies is kind of a new thing. I don't know
- 22:15Speaker 2: if you guys have noticed.
- 22:16Speaker 1: It's the pumpkin spice.
- 22:17Speaker 2: It's going to catch on.
- 22:18Speaker 6: It's kind of not a new thing.
- 22:19Speaker 1: It's the pumpkin spice of horror films. Yeah, just put.
- 22:23Speaker 2: A zombie on.
- 22:23Speaker 6: I used to love the idea of zombies. It was
- 22:26Speaker 6: a great metaphor for the rest of humanity.
- 22:30Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 22:31Speaker 2: I mean, I will say it was yesterday. Yeah, yesterday
- 22:37Speaker 2: when I was buying my pumpkin spice Twinkies. I was
- 22:40Speaker 2: in a store. I won't plug them until they send
- 22:42Speaker 2: us the check. But for now, I'm in this large
- 22:45Speaker 2: retail outlet and I'm walking and like it really did
- 22:48Speaker 2: occur to me. There's like everyone wasn't even in aisles
- 22:52Speaker 2: or rows. They were just sort of staggered about in
- 22:54Speaker 2: front of me and they were all like heading to
- 22:57Speaker 2: the registers. Like we were in the main aisle going
- 23:00Speaker 2: back to the registers and everyone was just like drawn
- 23:03Speaker 2: to it. And they were going at this oddly slow pace,
- 23:06Speaker 2: but each one in a different little area, just sort
- 23:09Speaker 2: of dragging along, mindlessly shuffling towards the commerce. And I'm like...
- 23:15Speaker 2: wow like if ever i got the whole like dawn
- 23:18Speaker 2: of the dead version of real life of like oh
- 23:21Speaker 2: yeah commercial zombies i see what that that was it
- 23:24Speaker 2: i was just like damn this is weird and a
- 23:26Speaker 2: little creepy but no one else seems.
- 23:28Speaker 1: To notice yeah no that's always the thing and i
- 23:30Speaker 1: always wonder what that is because people always seem to
- 23:33Speaker 1: leave at the same time as well And then you
- 23:35Speaker 1: mention it to whoever's checking you out, and they look
- 23:37Speaker 1: at you like you're crazy.
- 23:38Speaker 2: They're just like, I'm here all day. Shut up. I'm like,
- 23:41Speaker 2: how come it always seems like.
- 23:42Speaker 1: People always come out at the same time?
- 23:44Speaker 7: I am Batman.
- 23:46Speaker 2: Shut up. I am Checkout Batman.
- 23:48Speaker 1: I'm going to punch you in the face.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Now go. That's what I do.
- 23:51Speaker 6: Now go.
- 23:52Speaker 3: Now go.
- 23:53Speaker 2: So, yeah.
- 23:54Speaker 1: Would you like a Target card?
- 23:56Speaker 2: Just happened to notice there were a lot of zombies
- 23:58Speaker 2: in front of me as I was doing my shopping. Yeah.
- 24:02Speaker 2: can't say i'm again i was like hurry up and
- 24:04Speaker 2: get on my way so i can pay for my
- 24:06Speaker 2: pumpkin spice twinkies so i am one of those commerce
- 24:09Speaker 2: zombies i realize yeah but i'm at least self-aware.
- 24:13Speaker 1: There is a certain like weird idiots slow retail shuffle.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Yeah and they were all doing it and they were
- 24:21Speaker 2: all like again they were all pushing a cart so
- 24:22Speaker 2: they were just dragging on top of like there was
- 24:24Speaker 2: not much effort. That was slowly rolling them to their
- 24:28Speaker 2: doom and or the register.
- 24:30Speaker 1: And they said, pumpkin spice brains.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Pumpkin spice latte, please.
- 24:34Speaker 6: More pumpkin spice.
- 24:37Speaker 3: Ooh, Cheerios.
- 24:38Speaker 1: So yeah, I don't know. Yeah, no zombies.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Those won't be on our list.
- 24:41Speaker 6: But we will be eating Smarties, which I'm enjoying right now.
- 24:44Speaker 2: I was going to say, if we have moved into
- 24:47Speaker 2: the Halloween season.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Talking about candy. Smarties. We're a table full of.
- 24:52Speaker 2: We're opening up Smarties right now.
- 24:54Speaker 1: We're a table full of. Late 70s, early 80s kids. Yeah,
- 24:58Speaker 1: what else do you want to watch? What's on our list? Hmm.
- 25:03Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 25:04Speaker 6: Do you have any recommendations?
- 25:06Speaker 2: Yes, but I'm just... I was just trying to think
- 25:08Speaker 2: of what it was.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Were you trying to figure out what flavor Smarty you got?
- 25:10Speaker 2: No, because they're all the same. They all taste like chalk.
- 25:14Speaker 2: And don't get me wrong, I love them.
- 25:15Speaker 6: I just had vanilla unicorn chalk.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Just keep telling yourself that.
- 25:22Speaker 4: Well.
- 25:23Speaker 6: Either way, it's unicorn dust.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Okay, I know it's kind of cliche to talk about
- 25:28Speaker 2: at this point among movie geeks, but you've said you're
- 25:31Speaker 2: out of the loop a little bit. Have you seen Heredity? Uh-uh.
- 25:36Speaker 1: It sounds familiar.
- 25:38Speaker 2: Based on what you've said here today, I'm going to
- 25:41Speaker 2: heavily recommend Heredity.
- 25:46Speaker 1: So we're super late to the party on this one?
- 25:49Speaker 2: It was one of those even like because I only
- 25:52Speaker 2: saw it a few weeks ago. So like everybody when
- 25:54Speaker 2: it came out in the theaters was freaking out. Oh
- 25:56Speaker 2: my God, you gotta go see this. So by the
- 25:58Speaker 2: time it like was already leaving the theaters, I was like, well,
- 26:00Speaker 2: now I'm behind things. So I just sort of caught
- 26:03Speaker 2: it right as it hit the DVD Blu-ray area. So
- 26:06Speaker 2: it is out there. It is accessible. And I think, again,
- 26:10Speaker 2: based on what you've said just tonight, it is exactly
- 26:13Speaker 2: what you need.
- 26:14Speaker 6: Cool. Well, what's the gist?
- 26:17Speaker 2: It's probably best you don't even know. Oh, really? Seriously,
- 26:19Speaker 2: I think because there is something in it that you
- 26:22Speaker 2: don't necessarily see coming that I think, once again, based
- 26:26Speaker 2: on what you've said, you will really appreciate.
- 26:29Speaker 8: Oh.
- 26:33Speaker 6: I also want to see A Quiet Place.
- 26:36Speaker 1: Yeah, we still haven't seen that.
- 26:37Speaker 6: Still haven't seen it yet.
- 26:38Speaker 2: That was, again.
- 26:39Speaker 1: You want to know why? Because I can't imagine that
- 26:41Speaker 1: guy is anything but Jim from The Office. Just like
- 26:44Speaker 1: in Jack Ryan.
- 26:45Speaker 2: I hate to tell you, he's Jack Ryan.
- 26:47Speaker 1: He is pretty good.
- 26:48Speaker 2: He is really good. We watched Jack Ryan and it
- 26:49Speaker 2: was awesome.
- 26:50Speaker 1: For the first couple episodes, I expected him to look
- 26:52Speaker 1: at the camera and make a face every time. I
- 26:54Speaker 1: know everybody says that.
- 26:56Speaker 2: And his girl's off married to that Hudson dude.
- 27:02Speaker 1: What?
- 27:02Speaker 2: I can't remember the name of that show, but I've
- 27:04Speaker 2: now watched a lot of episodes of it.
- 27:06Speaker 5: The Office?
- 27:07Speaker 1: No.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Pam is married to.
- 27:10Speaker 1: She was married to the director of Guardians of the Galaxy, right?
- 27:12Speaker 2: No, none of that nonsense. I'm talking fictional. She's gone off.
- 27:16Speaker 2: She's gotten married to Kate Hudson's brother, who used to
- 27:20Speaker 2: be in that show with David Spade that nobody wanted
- 27:22Speaker 2: to watch because David Spade was in it. And then,
- 27:25Speaker 2: now he's in this new show with Pam. And they're married,
- 27:28Speaker 2: except it was not a very good marriage, and now
- 27:31Speaker 2: they're divorced. But guess what? They have kids, so they're
- 27:33Speaker 2: going to stay together and kind of live together so
- 27:36Speaker 2: they can both raise the kids.
- 27:37Speaker 1: Oh, and comedy ensues, I'm sure.
- 27:39Speaker 2: I gotta say, based on that premise, I expected it
- 27:42Speaker 2: to be terrible.
- 27:42Speaker 1: It was actually good?
- 27:43Speaker 2: It was pretty good. Like, they're both pretty good in it.
- 27:47Speaker 1: Well, she's good. I like her.
- 27:48Speaker 6: Hereditary is available on Amazon Prime for $ 5.
- 27:52Speaker 2: You're gonna go watch it right now.
- 27:54Speaker 1: What's one movie I couldn't sit through? Black Rainbow?
- 27:58Speaker 2: Which one?
- 27:59Speaker 6: Oh, Beyond the Black Rainbow.
- 28:01Speaker 2: Beyond the Green Door. That's what you mean.
- 28:04Speaker 1: I had difficulties with Beyond.
- 28:05Speaker 6: The Black Rainbow. Well, you know, Beyond the Black Rainbow.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Holy Mountain might be trouble for you.
- 28:10Speaker 6: No way.
- 28:11Speaker 1: I'll tell you what it was with Beyond the Black
- 28:14Speaker 1: Rainbow was the like.
- 28:15Speaker 6: Soundtrack?
- 28:16Speaker 2: Soundtrack. How would you. There we go. I was looking
- 28:20Speaker 2: for a description.
- 28:21Speaker 1: So, wait a minute. Do you think that the... Yeah,
- 28:23Speaker 1: see that? You gotta stop it.
- 28:25Speaker 6: See, that's what it is.
- 28:25Speaker 8: It's horrible.
- 28:26Speaker 7: I can't do it.
- 28:26Speaker 2: Let's just do that for the next hour. Go. I
- 28:27Speaker 2: just can't do it.
- 28:28Speaker 6: For the whole thing, that's what that is.
- 28:30Speaker 7: Now, it.
- 28:32Speaker 2: Definitely... That's just ambiance.
- 28:34Speaker 6: It definitely has a mood. But, ultimately, the movie makes
- 28:39Speaker 6: no sense to me whatsoever and is very anticlimactic.
- 28:43Speaker 2: Some filmmakers are going for that.
- 28:45Speaker 1: Well, I think... It had that cool, weird 70s sort
- 28:48Speaker 1: of thing going on, but I just could not get
- 28:50Speaker 1: past the soundtrack. It looked like it was great at parts,
- 28:55Speaker 1: and I was like, yeah. And then I'd just be like,
- 28:57Speaker 1: I just can't. It's so distracting to me.
- 28:58Speaker 6: That I can't even. The cinematography was interesting. It was
- 29:02Speaker 6: very colorful.
- 29:02Speaker 1: Am I thinking right? Wasn't it like a weird 70s
- 29:05Speaker 1: kind of vibe?
- 29:06Speaker 6: Well, he definitely had a 70s light show going on.
- 29:10Speaker 1: In his dungeon room. Maybe that was it.
- 29:14Speaker 2: Like we all have.
- 29:15Speaker 1: As we all do.
- 29:17Speaker 6: But, yeah. Well, I don't want to give it away.
- 29:21Speaker 6: But ultimately, I don't know. It was just odd. It
- 29:29Speaker 6: was just an odd film that I decided I didn't
- 29:32Speaker 6: really care about. I didn't care about what happened to
- 29:37Speaker 6: that guy or the girl.
- 29:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:41Speaker 6: That's sad for a movie. I would mark that in
- 29:45Speaker 6: the unsuccessful category.
- 29:48Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 29:48Speaker 1: So we did do... This is totally off topic, but
- 29:51Speaker 1: it was horrible nonetheless. We did watch The Mummy.
- 29:56Speaker 2: All right. Now.
- 29:58Speaker 6: Wait, wait, wait. And.
- 30:02Speaker 6: We watched the new Mummy.
- 30:03Speaker 1: The new Mummy.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Oh, no, the Tom Cruise, I'm assuming.
- 30:06Speaker 1: Tom Cruise Mummy.
- 30:07Speaker 2: I have seen it. And then we followed that up.
- 30:09Speaker 1: With the Brendan Fraser Mummy.
- 30:12Speaker 2: Possibly a worse idea, but that's just me. I was
- 30:16Speaker 2: never on board.
- 30:17Speaker 6: Followed up by the Mummy Returns, followed up by the Scorpion,
- 30:20Speaker 6: followed by the Scorpion 2.
- 30:22Speaker 2: King. Did you watch the third Mummy? Which most people
- 30:25Speaker 2: forgot existed.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Has nobody in it.
- 30:27Speaker 2: I thought Brendan came back for it.
- 30:29Speaker 6: It wasn't available when we tried to watch it.
- 30:32Speaker 2: The only reason I know it exists is I think
- 30:34Speaker 2: they're attacked by yetis at some point.
- 30:36Speaker 6: Really?
- 30:36Speaker 2: Which is almost the reason this made me want to
- 30:38Speaker 2: seek it out. But then I'd have to look at
- 30:40Speaker 2: Brendan Fraser's face. I know. It's like, never mind.
- 30:42Speaker 1: That's the horror movie aspect of it all. I can't.
- 30:45Speaker 2: No offense to him. He seems like a nice enough
- 30:47Speaker 2: dude in the.
- 30:48Speaker 6: Real world, I guess. He's an affable person.
- 30:49Speaker 2: I just can't watch him. I can't watch him on screen. Like,
- 30:52Speaker 2: I just, all the time, every time I see him. Oh,
- 30:54Speaker 2: and then we watched Journey to the Sun of the Earth. Oh, yeah. So,
- 30:57Speaker 2: a good movie.
- 30:58Speaker 1: Frasier kick, because we thought that was pretty funny.
- 31:00Speaker 2: Oh, wait, that one. Never mind.
- 31:01Speaker 1: A funny thing to do, just to watch random Brendan Frasier.
- 31:04Speaker 2: If it doesn't have The Rock in it, never mind.
- 31:06Speaker 1: I know, right?
- 31:08Speaker 2: Didn't they do the right thing in recasting, and or
- 31:11Speaker 2: bumping him out of the way and bringing in a
- 31:13Speaker 2: good actor?
- 31:15Speaker 6: Speaking of which.
- 31:16Speaker 1: Wait, I like The Rock.
- 31:17Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying. Okay. They got rid of Brendan Fraser,
- 31:20Speaker 2: brought in The Rock.
- 31:20Speaker 6: Speaking of The Rock, we also watched.
- 31:25Speaker 2: Doom.
- 31:26Speaker 1: But not Dune.
- 31:28Speaker 6: Not Dune.
- 31:29Speaker 2: But I want to watch Doom.
- 31:30Speaker 6: D-O-O-M.
- 31:31Speaker 2: Everyone's favorite video game of the moment.
- 31:35Speaker 6: And, you know, I gotta say, it's just action-packed gore and.
- 31:44Speaker 3: Stupid, really.
- 31:46Speaker 2: But that's enjoyable. How first-person-y is it? I've forgotten most.
- 31:50Speaker 2: At the end, there's a very.
- 31:52Speaker 6: The climactic first-person end where he's... I think I blocked
- 31:56Speaker 6: out most of what I ever watched of it.
- 31:58Speaker 1: It was pretty bad.
- 31:59Speaker 2: But it's good.
- 32:00Speaker 1: But joyfully bad.
- 32:01Speaker 2: Video game movies usually turn out not so... There's exceptions. Obviously,
- 32:06Speaker 2: Super Mario Bros. But most of them are way off track.
- 32:09Speaker 6: Had the acting been really terrible, it would have been unwatchable.
- 32:14Speaker 1: Unwatchable but the actors.
- 32:17Speaker 6: That were in it were decent they were they did
- 32:19Speaker 6: a good job and the dialogue wasn't stupid it was
- 32:24Speaker 6: believable it was just moronic if you were in that
- 32:27Speaker 6: scenario yeah yeah yeah in the end it was just
- 32:31Speaker 6: you know tight t-shirts and uh you know uh.
- 32:35Speaker 2: The rock can't wear anything else They don't make big enough.
- 32:39Speaker 1: Everything is tight on The Rock.
- 32:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, nothing can be baggy when you're just
- 32:43Speaker 2: that muscle-bound.
- 32:43Speaker 6: He has his own size at Target.
- 32:45Speaker 2: And truthfully, that was when he was tiny compared to
- 32:49Speaker 2: when he became The Rock. He became so much bigger
- 32:53Speaker 2: as time went on. It's crazy that as a wrestler,
- 32:56Speaker 2: he was the small version of himself. Now he's a mountain.
- 33:00Speaker 2: He's just huge. Impressively huge.
- 33:04Speaker 1: Huge GH going on there.
- 33:06Speaker 2: Not just hefty, as many actors get as the years
- 33:08Speaker 2: go on. No, no, he went the other way.
- 33:10Speaker 6: He stopped going by The Rock and then started going
- 33:12Speaker 6: by Gibraltar.
- 33:13Speaker 2: Yeah, he can. But we've jumped over the most important thing.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Let's discuss The Mummy because I have seen it.
- 33:22Speaker 1: So I have this problem. I don't like, what's his face?
- 33:25Speaker 1: Tom Cruise. I don't like Tom Cruise.
- 33:26Speaker 2: I don't think you're the only one. I believe I've
- 33:28Speaker 2: heard that many times from people. People don't like Tom Cruise.
- 33:31Speaker 6: It's okay.
- 33:31Speaker 2: Yet, I don't want.
- 33:33Speaker 1: Tom Cruise, right? But I think it was pretty good.
- 33:35Speaker 2: I also think he can be a great actor.
- 33:37Speaker 6: He can!
- 33:38Speaker 2: If you put him in the right role, he can
- 33:40Speaker 2: totally deliver. If you even put him in a role
- 33:43Speaker 2: that just needs a body to be there and do
- 33:46Speaker 2: ridiculous things, because all of those, minus the first two,
- 33:50Speaker 2: all of the recent Mission Impossible movies are kind of great,
- 33:53Speaker 2: and like... regardless of his acting like just the fact
- 33:57Speaker 2: that he's willing to do the dumb things he does
- 33:59Speaker 2: because they look awesome on screen and like the rest
- 34:02Speaker 2: of the action scenes and the cast and the cast
- 34:04Speaker 2: is pretty great outside of him so like those all
- 34:07Speaker 2: work because he's there but i don't know if we're
- 34:10Speaker 2: getting that much out of him like acting no but
- 34:12Speaker 2: then you look he can be a great dramatic actor
- 34:15Speaker 2: in very specific roles but like there's times when he's
- 34:18Speaker 2: name one i i want to know he's great tropic
- 34:24Speaker 2: thunder Yes, that's as dramatic. No, legitimately, there are... I
- 34:31Speaker 2: just have to go back because I've blacked out.
- 34:34Speaker 6: I know. Well, there's risky business.
- 34:36Speaker 2: I mean, I'm thinking of like Color of Money, but
- 34:38Speaker 2: that's not that far off from what he does in
- 34:40Speaker 2: a lot of other things. Rain Man. Rain Man, he's
- 34:43Speaker 2: pretty straight. We watched Cocktail.
- 34:44Speaker 1: That was terrible.
- 34:45Speaker 2: That's terrible. That's the thing. I've never seen that. Like
- 34:47Speaker 2: it's separate categories. Like he does some terrible stuff like Cocktail,
- 34:52Speaker 2: but let me double check because I swear. The horror
- 34:55Speaker 2: of Tom Cruise.
- 34:56Speaker 6: The horror of Tom Cruise.
- 34:58Speaker 2: I'm forgetting the good ones. Well, I mean, born on
- 35:01Speaker 2: the 4th of July. That's great. He doesn't phone it in.
- 35:04Speaker 2: That's a great performance. You totally forget that that's him.
- 35:06Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 35:07Speaker 2: It's been so long.
- 35:08Speaker 1: It's been so long since he's done anything that.
- 35:10Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. He's.
- 35:13Speaker 6: It's weird.
- 35:14Speaker 1: But I actually kind of liked that version of the mummy.
- 35:18Speaker 2: See, that's the thing. I was so not a Brendan
- 35:21Speaker 2: Fraser mummy, which a lot of people, again, it'd been
- 35:24Speaker 2: just long enough that I don't know who they were
- 35:27Speaker 2: shooting for. You're not going to get old school Universal
- 35:29Speaker 2: Monster fans because it sure as.
- 35:31Speaker 6: Hell ain't that.
- 35:32Speaker 2: And the kids that grew up on the Brendan Fraser one,
- 35:36Speaker 2: it's not that fun. So it's not that level of
- 35:39Speaker 2: campy silliness. It's just a big dumb action movie. And
- 35:43Speaker 2: I'm like, that's what I've said every time I talk
- 35:46Speaker 2: about it. I'm like, it's not a bad movie. action
- 35:49Speaker 2: movie it's just not a mummy movie no it's not
- 35:51Speaker 2: a horror movie at.
- 35:52Speaker 1: All aspect is just like secondary it's.
- 35:56Speaker 9: A chase film yeah it's a chase film and i
- 35:58Speaker 9: don't know that i i don't know that i cared
- 36:01Speaker 9: at all for the film at all really the the
- 36:04Speaker 9: the dialogue was silly and i was not emotionally invested
- 36:09Speaker 9: in whether or not he lived or died or the
- 36:11Speaker 9: woman lived just a.
- 36:13Speaker 1: Good stuff being chased around.
- 36:15Speaker 10: Running from things exploding the mummy was done great that
- 36:19Speaker 10: scene where you know at the plane crash site and
- 36:23Speaker 10: the you know the mummy is unleashed.
- 36:26Speaker 6: From the sarcophagus and she's acting like an arachnid with
- 36:30Speaker 6: broken limbs I mean that was legitimately creepy and you know.
- 36:34Speaker 2: And I've heard other people them running away and like
- 36:38Speaker 2: the like mummy zombies that are coming after them and
- 36:41Speaker 2: like They're falling apart, but the arms are still going
- 36:44Speaker 2: after them. There's fun little aspects. If you latched onto
- 36:48Speaker 2: that kind of stuff and told a cool horror-themed fun action,
- 36:54Speaker 2: you could make that work. Again, it's mostly writing. They
- 36:59Speaker 2: missed it before it ever even got to shooting.
- 37:01Speaker 1: It had that feeling that it was a movie by committee.
- 37:05Speaker 1: So many people had made changes. You know what I mean?
- 37:08Speaker 1: Maybe it started out as one thing, but by the time.
- 37:12Speaker 2: And I think, I mean, it did because it started
- 37:15Speaker 2: out to launch an entire new franchise. And I think
- 37:19Speaker 2: we missed the boat on that because that was kind
- 37:21Speaker 2: of my favorite aspect. We'd already gotten our first crossover
- 37:25Speaker 2: character and like the setup to all of them. When
- 37:29Speaker 2: we get to Russell Crowe, I mean, his character is eventually,
- 37:35Speaker 2: if they had a chance to do them, was going
- 37:37Speaker 2: to be like the invisible. No, he's Jekyll and Hyde. Yeah. Yeah.
- 37:41Speaker 2: So he was going to be Jekyll and Hyde. They
- 37:43Speaker 2: were going to work in like an invisible man and
- 37:45Speaker 2: a creature from the Black Lagoon. And like that was
- 37:47Speaker 2: the plan is to launch a new universal monster series.
- 37:51Speaker 2: And they were all going to, because we love shared universes,
- 37:54Speaker 2: they were all going to legitimately cross over and have
- 37:57Speaker 2: characters that crossed over. And they even kind of ended
- 38:00Speaker 2: with it kind of like, I'm like, I kind of
- 38:02Speaker 2: like the way they left that. in a better movie
- 38:06Speaker 2: up to that point, that could have been a cool
- 38:07Speaker 2: way to end it so that we could revisit that
- 38:10Speaker 2: character down the line. So I think where we really
- 38:13Speaker 2: lost out was the much bigger thing that could have
- 38:16Speaker 2: happened had they brought in better writers and made a
- 38:19Speaker 2: better movie.
- 38:20Speaker 6: I would like to see a retelling of The Invisible Man.
- 38:24Speaker 6: I think that would be not like.
- 38:27Speaker 2: The one that we've... See, not too long ago.
- 38:30Speaker 1: Any success relaunching the Universal Monsters. They've tried so many times.
- 38:36Speaker 1: And I knew people that were so in love with
- 38:38Speaker 1: those things.
- 38:39Speaker 2: I still am. No joke.
- 38:41Speaker 1: Yeah, but I mean, outside of you.
- 38:42Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a lot of people that that is their
- 38:46Speaker 2: go-to for any horror. Movie-wise, it was that initial push
- 38:52Speaker 2: of horror movies in this country and the world over.
- 38:55Speaker 2: I mean, you get even older and silent stuff, but
- 38:58Speaker 2: That was when the entire industry went, oh, this is
- 39:02Speaker 2: a thing we can do. Horror movies. Yeah, Dracula.
- 39:05Speaker 6: Dracula with the latest reboot with... Well, it's not the
- 39:10Speaker 6: latest one, but the one with Winona Ryder.
- 39:12Speaker 1: Oh, God. It's so bad. I love that movie.
- 39:15Speaker 2: I love that movie.
- 39:16Speaker 1: I love it.
- 39:16Speaker 2: I do, too. Keanu. People love Keanu now. That's the
- 39:20Speaker 2: one thing that's changed in the last 25 years is
- 39:23Speaker 2: he went from being a joke that now suddenly everyone
- 39:26Speaker 2: loves him. Maybe that will get respect now.
- 39:29Speaker 1: I love that movie.
- 39:32Speaker 6: We may have talked about this before, but Keanu, as
- 39:36Speaker 6: part of his reintroduction into mainstream movies, he started working
- 39:40Speaker 6: with these Chinese action companies and he did some kung
- 39:43Speaker 6: fu films that were great.
- 39:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:46Speaker 1: But that Bram Stoker's Dracula was so cool because of
- 39:49Speaker 1: the way they did some of the special effects. It
- 39:51Speaker 1: was like super old school.
- 39:53Speaker 2: And I still say that's the last great, and I
- 39:57Speaker 2: think what broke, Coppola. Yeah. It's the last epic Francis
- 40:02Speaker 2: Ford Coppola movie. It's not the same guy making Jack.
- 40:07Speaker 2: It's not the same guy that's making all of these other...
- 40:12Speaker 2: What's the weird lawyer movie with.
- 40:16Speaker 2: Matt Damon there's like so many other like really normal
- 40:21Speaker 2: movies that came out the next 10 years from him
- 40:24Speaker 2: and it's just like what and that's the thing like
- 40:26Speaker 2: from what I hear it really like pushed him to
- 40:30Speaker 2: the edge of like this is too much stuff I'm
- 40:32Speaker 2: taking on too much because he was going to again
- 40:35Speaker 2: that was going to be that same idea he was
- 40:38Speaker 2: going to make the Dracula movie and then going to
- 40:40Speaker 2: make the Frankenstein movie that came out a year or
- 40:43Speaker 2: two later and And he was so overwhelmed. He was like,
- 40:47Speaker 2: Kenneth Branagh, would you please take over for me? Which
- 40:49Speaker 2: is why I think he's still like executive producer or something.
- 40:52Speaker 2: But he was going to direct that. And like Bram
- 40:55Speaker 2: Stoker's Dracula like broke him.
- 40:57Speaker 1: I still love that movie.
- 40:59Speaker 2: I love it.
- 41:01Speaker 6: Apparently he's no Stanley Kubrick.
- 41:03Speaker 1: Comfort food of movies.
- 41:05Speaker 2: Kubrick started broke, so it was okay. He was already
- 41:09Speaker 2: broke somewhere inside of his head and he was just like.
- 41:12Speaker 7: I'm gonna go with it.
- 41:13Speaker 2: There was definitely a screw loose. Which I love, though.
- 41:18Speaker 2: I'm gonna go research for 10 years and decide to
- 41:21Speaker 2: not make that movie. Because that's what I do. not
- 41:26Speaker 2: gonna do it so.
- 41:27Speaker 1: Yeah so i'll add the bram stoker's dracula to our
- 41:30Speaker 1: list you don't have to watch that one.
- 41:32Speaker 2: But you should i'll watch it it's awesome i'll watch.
- 41:33Speaker 1: It gary oldman is just so awesome gary.
- 41:36Speaker 6: Oldman that's his name i was trying to think gary
- 41:38Speaker 6: oldman is.
- 41:38Speaker 1: Amazing i really love gary oldman.
- 41:40Speaker 2: And everybody wants to make fun of keanu but i
- 41:43Speaker 2: will it was on a episode years ago sterling brought
- 41:46Speaker 2: it up and i was like damn you're right Because
- 41:48Speaker 2: everybody wanted to make fun of Keanu's like, whoa, you know, vampires.
- 41:52Speaker 2: But like, there is a moment where like, he's like,
- 41:55Speaker 2: you know, Jonathan, what is it? Harker?
- 42:00Speaker 1: Jonathan Harker.
- 42:01Speaker 2: Jonathan Harker kind of has to be a little dense
- 42:05Speaker 2: because he's like, he's like skittering on the walls and
- 42:08Speaker 2: like licking his own blood. And he's like, something peculiar
- 42:11Speaker 2: is going on. I better write about it in a
- 42:14Speaker 2: letter to my girl. I feel like things are strange.
- 42:19Speaker 2: Just like his shadows doing shadow puppets and yo-yoing. That
- 42:25Speaker 2: might be Treehouse of Horrors. But still, it's pretty close
- 42:28Speaker 2: to what's going on. And he's just like, hmm, this
- 42:31Speaker 2: thousand-year-old looking man, something's a little strange with him. So
- 42:35Speaker 2: maybe you do need to cast an actor that can
- 42:38Speaker 2: sell that being a little slow. And Keanu, certainly a
- 42:42Speaker 2: younger Keanu, could pull that off.
- 42:43Speaker 6: Folk in the Victorian era were not quick to make
- 42:47Speaker 6: snap judgments.
- 42:50Speaker 2: From that perspective, I was like, you know, you got
- 42:52Speaker 2: a point. Maybe that was better casting than we ever gave.
- 42:54Speaker 5: Him credit for.
- 42:58Speaker 6: Oh, and of course, all of the Harry Potter 1
- 43:02Speaker 6: through 7 or 8.
- 43:02Speaker 1: Yeah, those are like.
- 43:06Speaker 8: There's horror elements throughout.
- 43:08Speaker 1: These were the season... The seasonal aspect.
- 43:12Speaker 7: I just.
- 43:13Speaker 2: They're Christmas movies.
- 43:13Speaker 1: They are Christmas movies.
- 43:14Speaker 2: I'll admit it.
- 43:15Speaker 1: They're like Die Hard. It's a Christmas movie.
- 43:16Speaker 2: Sure. I love them. I love that.
- 43:20Speaker 6: The feeling that it gives me. The sense of.
- 43:24Speaker 2: Spooky, there might be a ghost in my bathroom kind
- 43:28Speaker 2: of a vibe.
- 43:29Speaker 1: Is that a Don Knotts movie?
- 43:32Speaker 2: Oh, I got a ghost in my bathroom.
- 43:34Speaker 1: There's a ghost.
- 43:35Speaker 2: There's a ghost in there and I got a bashful bladder.
- 43:40Speaker 2: All right, anyway. The bashful bladder opening this weekend at
- 43:44Speaker 2: the drive-in. My question for you, Paul, is are you
- 43:50Speaker 2: into the Fantastic Beasts end of this franchise? Have you
- 43:54Speaker 2: watched that first one? Yes. And or moving into the sequels?
- 43:58Speaker 11: Actually, I love it.
- 43:58Speaker 2: When does that one come out? I think it's... Is
- 44:01Speaker 2: it out? If not, soon. I don't think it's out yet.
- 44:04Speaker 6: I loved Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
- 44:06Speaker 1: I like the beasts.
- 44:07Speaker 2: Do you know Where to Find Them? I feel like
- 44:09Speaker 2: it's pretty easily found when you get into that movie.
- 44:12Speaker 6: And I like the more adult aspect of that. I
- 44:17Speaker 6: feel like it's... I don't know. In a way, it
- 44:22Speaker 6: was more interesting than the Harry Potter series.
- 44:26Speaker 1: Well, yeah.
- 44:28Speaker 6: It certainly spoke to me more, being of that age
- 44:31Speaker 6: range anyway.
- 44:34Speaker 1: You know, it feels like a juggernaut, and now it
- 44:37Speaker 1: just feels like another money grab, right? That's kind of
- 44:40Speaker 1: my thing, but I did like it, and I do
- 44:42Speaker 1: like that universe.
- 44:44Speaker 2: That's the thing. I like being able to build universes
- 44:47Speaker 2: and not have everybody assume that it's just a money grab.
- 44:50Speaker 1: It is.
- 44:51Speaker 2: It always is. It always is. I'm okay with Marvel
- 44:54Speaker 2: being a huge universe and Star Wars being a huge
- 44:56Speaker 2: universe and Harry Potter. They all kind of deserve their
- 44:58Speaker 2: own universe.
- 44:59Speaker 6: Certainly J.K. Rowling had no problems with her books being
- 45:03Speaker 6: turned into movies.
- 45:05Speaker 2: Well, I know. Well, I guess.
- 45:08Speaker 1: I mean, I did enjoy it. I won't say I
- 45:09Speaker 1: didn't enjoy it.
- 45:11Speaker 6: So just enjoy it. Okay.
- 45:12Speaker 2: Are you comfortable with the addition of a certain Johnny Depp?
- 45:18Speaker 2: being added to the lineup and i'm assuming a what
- 45:21Speaker 2: will be bigger and bigger role as.
- 45:24Speaker 6: Long as he has as long as he wears a
- 45:26Speaker 6: funny nose i'm okay with it.
- 45:27Speaker 2: How about eyeliner can he have some eyeliner.
- 45:30Speaker 1: It's another like jack sparrow you know well now he's.
- 45:33Speaker 2: Gonna like he's gonna take on the persona of mick
- 45:37Speaker 2: jagger and he's just gonna be doing a lot of
- 45:39Speaker 2: kicks and like hey ladies and like he's a lot
- 45:42Speaker 2: of flailing of his arms and like i.
- 45:44Speaker 6: Thought he was already doing that That's Keith Richards.
- 45:48Speaker 2: That's Keith Richards.
- 45:49Speaker 6: Break into the dancing chicken.
- 45:50Speaker 2: He does the little dance kick and like, yeah, see?
- 45:56Speaker 1: Yeah, that's horrible.
- 45:57Speaker 2: That's a horrible thought.
- 45:58Speaker 7: The wings.
- 45:58Speaker 2: It's going to happen.
- 45:59Speaker 1: But you know what I mean? What happens to actors
- 46:02Speaker 1: that they just become these cartoonish versions of themselves, like
- 46:05Speaker 1: Tom Cruise?
- 46:06Speaker 2: Well.
- 46:07Speaker 6: You know?
- 46:08Speaker 1: Johnny Depp is now just a cheap copy of Johnny Depp.
- 46:12Speaker 2: I miss the Johnny Depp we used to have.
- 46:14Speaker 1: Johnny Depp is now the dime store version of Johnny Depp.
- 46:17Speaker 2: In a way, it's a success.
- 46:20Speaker 6: They're giving the people what they actually don't know that
- 46:24Speaker 6: they want.
- 46:25Speaker 2: You become so much of a brand that you really
- 46:29Speaker 2: start to become your own brand.
- 46:31Speaker 6: It's just a... you know, repetition at a point and you're, you're,
- 46:37Speaker 6: you get into the groove and you're not really making
- 46:40Speaker 6: art at that point.
- 46:40Speaker 2: Well, and it's not like it's a new thing. Like
- 46:43Speaker 2: I think back sometimes of older actors and I think
- 46:45Speaker 2: somebody like Clark Gable. Did he ever break out of
- 46:48Speaker 2: that persona? Like, isn't he always kind of Clark Gable
- 46:51Speaker 2: in everything you've ever seen? Humphrey Bogart. Even, yeah, Bogart,
- 46:55Speaker 2: Cary Grant. Like, Cary Grant had a little more to
- 46:58Speaker 2: work with, but I still feel like he doesn't stray. Like,
- 47:01Speaker 2: sometimes he can do a little more comedy versus drama,
- 47:03Speaker 2: but that... His persona is still kind of there, and
- 47:07Speaker 2: he just does a little more with it than some
- 47:09Speaker 2: of the others. To Catch a Thief versus Mother Goose. Yeah.
- 47:13Speaker 2: He can do other stuff. He's pretty much doing the
- 47:16Speaker 2: same character, but... But the silly version.
- 47:19Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 47:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:21Speaker 2: It's like I feel like all of them find their thing,
- 47:23Speaker 2: and they're like, oh, this is what makes me money.
- 47:27Speaker 2: You almost do get people when they go too far,
- 47:29Speaker 2: and you're like, people are like, what the hell was that?
- 47:32Speaker 2: I hate this movie because... You tried something different. You
- 47:35Speaker 2: did something that you're not normally doing in all of
- 47:38Speaker 2: your movies. So, I mean, it is kind of a
- 47:40Speaker 2: proven track record kind of a thing.
- 47:43Speaker 6: It's kind of strange to think of Jimmy Stewart as
- 47:45Speaker 6: a brand, but he was.
- 47:46Speaker 3: He was.
- 47:47Speaker 2: Oh, he definitely was. And you do. Like, he's another
- 47:49Speaker 2: one of those. He never really strayed from that. But
- 47:53Speaker 2: you see how serious he can be in something like
- 47:55Speaker 2: Vertigo versus as light as he is in some of
- 47:59Speaker 2: the other stuff. And even, like, going back, he wasn't before...
- 48:03Speaker 2: before because that's what somebody was just referencing some of
- 48:06Speaker 2: the earlier stuff with him where he's a little darker
- 48:09Speaker 2: and like you're not used to it because we all
- 48:13Speaker 2: got to know him as the jimmy stewart when he
- 48:16Speaker 2: was conscious of his jimmy stewart persona but like the
- 48:19Speaker 2: early days he was just an actor he just showed
- 48:21Speaker 2: up and did stuff and sometimes it wasn't quite as
- 48:24Speaker 2: you know the normal jimmy stewart thing that he would
- 48:28Speaker 2: be okay with doing as he got.
- 48:29Speaker 6: It's a wonderful life it's actually a very dark.
- 48:31Speaker 2: Dark It's become a feel-good holiday classic, but not without
- 48:37Speaker 2: that last 15 minutes.
- 48:38Speaker 6: Makes me cry every time. And, you know, tackling some
- 48:42Speaker 6: serious issues. Clearly, he's got some psychological trauma.
- 48:47Speaker 2: A lot of people go through that at the holidays.
- 48:50Speaker 2: That's right.
- 48:51Speaker 6: All right. Sorry, I'm digging into my next round of Smarties.
- 48:56Speaker 1: What do they taste like? What color do you get?
- 48:58Speaker 6: Well, this one was peach chalk flavored.
- 49:02Speaker 1: See, I swear there's slight differences.
- 49:06Speaker 2: Very subtle. Very subtle.
- 49:08Speaker 6: And I think it's the difference of yellow number five
- 49:10Speaker 6: versus yellow number two.
- 49:11Speaker 1: But I don't know if you did a blind taste
- 49:13Speaker 1: test of smarty colors, if you could distinguish them. I
- 49:15Speaker 1: don't think you could.
- 49:16Speaker 2: I feel like this sounds like a challenge. It does.
- 49:19Speaker 6: Unicorn chalk. No. But so here's the vanilla one.
- 49:25Speaker 1: Yeah I mean if you were okay so if you
- 49:26Speaker 1: were going to make a horror film Alright. What would
- 49:29Speaker 1: you make a horror film about? Have you ever thought?
- 49:32Speaker 1: I mean I know you think about it a lot.
- 49:34Speaker 2: Do I?
- 49:35Speaker 1: Well you think about horror films.
- 49:36Speaker 2: I think about horror films a lot. But usually just
- 49:38Speaker 2: stuff I've seen. That's the thing I feel like is
- 49:40Speaker 2: hard to do. How do you make a horror film
- 49:43Speaker 2: that isn't something you've already seen before? How do you
- 49:46Speaker 2: come up with anything original when you've got so much stuff?
- 49:49Speaker 2: Especially in a genre that's got such rabid fans that
- 49:52Speaker 2: you're like, how do I not rip off people? How
- 49:57Speaker 2: much of an homage can I do before I just
- 49:59Speaker 2: become a hack?
- 50:01Speaker 6: I think that that is unavoidable to a degree, but
- 50:05Speaker 6: You know, the psychological aspect is always free reign because
- 50:08Speaker 6: there's always new things to be afraid of.
- 50:10Speaker 1: That one was lemony. Was it?
- 50:13Speaker 2: Well, there you go.
- 50:13Speaker 6: Lemon number five.
- 50:14Speaker 1: But I don't know if it was yellow.
- 50:16Speaker 2: I dropped that one in pledge.
- 50:18Speaker 1: Pledge smarties. This is the original Tide Pod.
- 50:22Speaker 6: I need to take a quick break.
- 50:24Speaker 1: We would take weird pills.
- 50:25Speaker 6: I need to take a quick break.
- 50:27Speaker 2: Let's take a break. And you can go take care
- 50:30Speaker 2: of your business. And I think. I think. Gina wants
- 50:34Speaker 2: to stay here and tell people they should have some coffee.
- 50:36Speaker 1: You want coffee? I'll make coffee.
- 50:38Speaker 2: Where would you get this coffee?
- 50:40Speaker 1: From my coffee maker. I'll make it.
- 50:42Speaker 2: And then where would you get the grounds to put it?
- 50:45Speaker 1: You want me to plug my favorite coffee shop?
- 50:47Speaker 2: I think you should.
- 50:49Speaker 1: I can't because they raise their prices and I'm mad
- 50:51Speaker 1: at them.
- 50:52Speaker 2: Probably because you're not using the Meltdown code.
- 50:54Speaker 1: And you have a code? What?
- 50:56Speaker 2: I've told you this.
- 50:57Speaker 7: In the past. You have not. You've told me.
- 50:59Speaker 1: I've told you I have it like three times a day.
- 51:01Speaker 1: Heine brothers.
- 51:03Speaker 2: I have it recorded by the way. You do realize
- 51:05Speaker 2: we record this every time. So I have it me
- 51:08Speaker 2: telling you on file.
- 51:10Speaker 1: I don't believe it.
- 51:11Speaker 2: All right. I can dig it up if you really
- 51:13Speaker 2: want but I do have me previously telling you and
- 51:17Speaker 2: everyone listening at home and or out in the world
- 51:20Speaker 2: that we have a code. You go to the website

- 55:35Speaker 5: the refreshment center before showtime.
- 55:47Speaker 7: This is Julie Adams, and you are listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 55:53Speaker 11: Movie Meltdown.
- 56:11Speaker 4: Last night at the museum, they were searching for a
- 56:15Speaker 4: trace of the thief who stole the mummy's bracelet.
- 56:19Speaker 2: From its case.
- 56:21Speaker 4: And now tonight, the mummy's curse is on his thieving head,
- 56:26Speaker 4: for the mummy's come to life, awakened from the dead.
- 56:42Speaker 4: If you're going to.
- 56:44Speaker 1: Make a horror film, how do you not do something
- 56:48Speaker 1: that's been done? It's like every horror film has been done.
- 56:52Speaker 2: You move into technology. The always changing technology. Because those
- 56:57Speaker 2: work really good. You know, ones about evil lurking on
- 57:00Speaker 2: the internet or in your cell phone. No way, I'm
- 57:04Speaker 2: thinking all those have turned out really bad. That's just
- 57:07Speaker 2: good sci-fi, right?
- 57:08Speaker 6: You start, you know... Reading the tea leaves of technology
- 57:12Speaker 6: and knowing where it's going to go, which is ultimately a,
- 57:16Speaker 6: you know, big brother scenario.
- 57:17Speaker 2: That's always terrifying to everyone.
- 57:20Speaker 1: But I'm not a sci-fi fan, really.
- 57:23Speaker 6: Well, it's sort of.
- 57:24Speaker 2: It's crossover genre.
- 57:25Speaker 6: It's dystopian horror, you know.
- 57:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 57:28Speaker 6: So, yeah, that's okay. That's not sci-fi, really.
- 57:33Speaker 2: It can be both. Yeah.
- 57:35Speaker 6: It absolutely can be, but.
- 57:38Speaker 2: It just depends on how you look at it.
- 57:39Speaker 1: I hate to say I'm not one of those, but I.
- 57:41Speaker 2: Am for some things.
- 57:42Speaker 6: It's a psychological horror.
- 57:44Speaker 1: What's the one that's set in New Zealand?
- 57:47Speaker 2: Oh, Quiet Earth.
- 57:48Speaker 1: That's a great one.
- 57:49Speaker 6: It is very good. Sort of 80s version of dystopian future,
- 58:00Speaker 6: but really psychological horror about being alone and the fragility
- 58:08Speaker 6: of the human mind when it's left to itself.
- 58:12Speaker 2: See, that's what I was going to ask you, is
- 58:14Speaker 2: more so, because I don't know that we can come
- 58:17Speaker 2: up with what can we make, but what are horror
- 58:20Speaker 2: movies that have worked for you, and then why is
- 58:22Speaker 2: it that they're effective for you?
- 58:28Speaker 6: Well, as I've previously stated, I think anything in the
- 58:32Speaker 6: folk horror genre works for me just because as a
- 58:37Speaker 6: child of the seventies, you know, who grew up watching
- 58:41Speaker 6: things like, uh, Arthur C. Clarke's mysterious universe and stuff
- 58:45Speaker 6: like that, you know, anything that touches those, uh, marks
- 58:53Speaker 6: work for me, um, you know, the, anything touching on
- 58:58Speaker 6: a actual, um, mystery that is, Actually, you know what
- 59:05Speaker 6: would be really interesting is uh a a horror film
- 59:13Speaker 6: set in ancient uh egypt or ancient.
- 59:19Speaker 2: Like the mummy no with tom cruise Well, that's modern day.
- 59:26Speaker 6: I'm talking about ancient Egypt.
- 59:27Speaker 2: He can do an old-timey accent. I'm pretty sure he's
- 59:29Speaker 2: a good actor. I'm pretty sure he's a good actor.
- 59:31Speaker 6: He can pretend to be an Egyptian or, you know,
- 59:35Speaker 6: some sort of movie that ties together all of the.
- 59:39Speaker 1: Ancient alien stuff?
- 59:40Speaker 2: Well, no.
- 59:41Speaker 7: Stargate?
- 59:42Speaker 2: I wasn't going to say ancient aliens.
- 59:44Speaker 6: I was going to say the... I think Stargate. The
- 59:46Speaker 6: ancient civilizations that, you know, constructed all of these, you know, massive...
- 59:52Speaker 6: monolithic structures and then somehow we we lost that ability
- 59:57Speaker 6: halloween three is.
- 59:59Speaker 2: That the one that's in space no that's the one
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: that deals with stonehenge what if you haven't watched it
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: lately Fucking watch Halloween 3. Wait a minute. There is
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: no Michael Myers.
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: No, that's the one with the television, right?
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: It is the television, but it also involves robots and
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: Stonehenge and was one of the weirdest. We watched it
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: for an episode. It is weird. I hadn't watched it
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: since I was a kid.
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: I don't remember.
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: I was just like, what? that's great hell is going
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: on i don't remember that i recommend.
- 1:00:30Speaker 6: For you that i love films that totally take you
- 1:00:32Speaker 6: on this wild roller coaster ride.
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: That's well i'll tell you what i think really worked
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: on that scene kind of encompassing all the things that
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: you like what works phantasm ah like that is a
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: weird creepy like set in a weird town you know
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: small i mean You don't find out that much about
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: the town, but still, it's like this weird remote place
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: with some weird.
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: It's also kind of that, like, 80s era of, like,
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: off on our own, some sort of horrible thing going on.
- 1:01:03Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: Nobody's going to believe us if we told them anyway.
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: So it kind of has that little kids version, but
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: they're not really little kids, but kind of still has
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: that same... kids off on a horrifying adventure that no
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: one's going to buy if you try to tell them
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: about it.
- 1:01:18Speaker 6: Leprechaun 1 through 3.
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: No, I mean, I think that Phantasm really kind of
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: works for me as a horror film for such a
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: variety of reasons.
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: And it's way weirder than you would think. I remember
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: Bits and.
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: Pieces as a kid and.
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: Didn't watch it for years. And then we started seeing
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: the tall man at shows and we started seeing all
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: these cast members. And I was like, I guess I
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: should go back and watch these again. And I remember
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: re-watching that first one and going, this is not at
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: all what I remembered or expected. It was very different.
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: So I think that kind of works in terms of
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: things that work. And I think that's a pretty original idea.
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: That's the whole thing.
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: There was nothing that was like that. And I don't
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: know if that's the problem with the Universal Monsters. What
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: are you going to do with them? I guess you
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: can do anything with them, yet you can't. And everybody
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: still thinks of them as these kind of campy.
- 1:02:11Speaker 6: Anything that, that touches on, um, reaching into a alternate
- 1:02:18Speaker 6: realm work, right.
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: As a, as a, as a horror subject.
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: So definitely gives you a whole other plane to work.
- 1:02:27Speaker 6: It gives you a lot of freedom to, you know,
- 1:02:30Speaker 6: be creative with your characters and your story and everything. So,
- 1:02:36Speaker 6: you know, alternate universe, sort of, uh, sort of the fringe, uh,
- 1:02:41Speaker 6: series version of horror.
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: Like Fringe the Show?
- 1:02:46Speaker 6: Fringe the Show, which I'm a huge fan of. Did
- 1:02:48Speaker 6: you ever watch that?
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: I like Pacey.
- 1:02:54Speaker 7: That's my response.
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: That's my only response.
- 1:02:58Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: Coffee's ready.
- 1:03:02Speaker 6: You too can enjoy Honey Brothers Coffee.
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: You too can enjoy Honey Brothers Coffee.
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: Brought to you by Honey Brothers.
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: Cashew milk.
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: Don't necessarily want it in my coffee if you had
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: pumpkin spice cereal of some sort there's some smarties in
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: it i was kind of thinking maybe i'm gonna put
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: some smarties in my coffee sugar is smarties and vice
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: versa so i think i'll be fine just dumping smarties
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: in my coffee you're putting smarties in your coffee i
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: can if you if you want to try this as
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: an experiment i feel like they'll break down it's kind
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: of hot i'm sure they will actually i have brown
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: sugar We have sugar. We have an entire pack. Do
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: you have an issue if I put Smarties in my cup?
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: No!
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: Go for it! Wasting my Smarties, damn you.
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: I'm just going to.
- 1:03:51Speaker 6: Offer you regular sugar.
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: I feel like it's a holiday episode. I need to
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: dump some Smarties in there.
- 1:03:57Speaker 6: It's going to taint the flavor of the coffee to
- 1:03:59Speaker 6: make it taste like unicorn chalk. I think you're... Yeah,
- 1:04:07Speaker 6: I'm sorry.
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: I feel like I ramble and I have nothing useful
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: to contribute except my coffee making.
- 1:04:12Speaker 6: There you go. But see, that's a good thing. You
- 1:04:17Speaker 6: can definitely regulate the amount of sugar you eat. Some
- 1:04:21Speaker 6: days it's a six smarty coffee.
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: Some days it's a three smarty coffee. It's sort of
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: like sugar cubes, but they're even more cut down. You
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: can just decide just how much you need. Smarty wise.
- 1:04:33Speaker 6: This one's purple flavored. See, I was right.
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: Look, I'm barely pulling any up. It already is liquefying them.
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: So you at home should also put Smarties in your coffee.
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: Pretty good.
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: Just saying. Enjoy the holidays. By that I mean Halloween.
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: Because I don't really care about most of the rest.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: I think it's the best holiday.
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: That's all I'm saying. Halloween's all we need.
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: We thought about getting more decorations for out front. Oh,
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: I got this cool cat thing. Hold on, I gotta
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: show you this.
- 1:05:02Speaker 6: I think we're gonna get a giant inflatable specter.
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: I went and then.
- 1:05:08Speaker 6: Very, you know, 12 foot tall and spookily. Has long
- 1:05:14Speaker 6: spectory fingers and a ghoulish face.
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: She's showing me her light-up cat face. She's trying to
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: light it up, but she's having issues. She has many
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: issues as you all know. If you all go stand
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: in front of her house, you can see it because
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: it's on the door. Go now. Go now in front
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: of the house.
- 1:05:37Speaker 6: Go now. Go look. Go now.
- 1:05:42Speaker 8: Oh.
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: Oh, God. I don't have any too much money to
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: put towards it, but I still can't fight it when
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: it's Halloween time. I have to go look for specific things. Now,
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: it used to just be normal Halloween-y stuff, but... I've
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: also been a sucker always since I found out it
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: was a thing for the Day of the Dead as
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: a concept, as an idea. So in the last four
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: or five years, like for some reason, that's also become
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: a thing. You can find more stuff. That surprisingly like
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: pretty mainstream places have gotten on board and been like, hey,
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: weirdos will buy this skeleton shaped thing. So I went
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: the other day and spent what little money I had
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: on a whole bunch of, I now have like two
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: sizes of mariachi bands of the undead. Wow, really? So, yeah,
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: there were two different scales, and I was like, well,
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: I like them both. When we were in New Mexico.
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: I can't eat food, but I have many mariachi bands.
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: When we were in New Mexico, we saw all kinds
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: of cool pieces like that.
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: I prefer Old Mexico myself. When it comes to my
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: Day of the Dead stuff. It makes it super legit
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: if you get it from Old Mexico.
- 1:06:47Speaker 8: Well.
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: It's just a knockoff if you get it from New Mexico.
- 1:06:50Speaker 6: It's cheaper for sure from old Mexico.
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: It's hard to find here, though.
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: It's marked up a million times.
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: I've spent years getting a handful of pieces because they are,
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: by the time they get up here, they're A, hard
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: to find, and B, the people on this end jack
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: up the prices. So legit stuff from Mexico actually costs
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: a fortune when you get here and some gallery puts
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: it out there and sells it.
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: There are these crazy hand-carved animals that they do. Have
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: you ever seen them? It's kind of like the Day
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: of the Dead carvings, but they're like these really weird
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: versions of animals. Anyway, I'm sure when the galleries there
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: buy them from the Mexican artisan, it's like $ 5.
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: Here's some beans or something.
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: By the time you get them here, they're like $ 500.
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: Of course. It's ridiculous.
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: But they are a piece of art.
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: That's how we operate.
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: But I don't think they're probably paying the artisans enough
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: for it. But it's from this particular kind of tree.
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: That's true always. As an artist, I'm sure you feel
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: that way. Yeah. Yeah, I.
- 1:07:51Speaker 3: Do.
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: You know what I'm talking about, don't you?
- 1:07:53Speaker 6: No, I don't.
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: You were looking at me like, I've never heard this before.
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: Actually, it was just a.
- 1:07:57Speaker 6: I was just staring through you, really.
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: Oh, God. Here's the twist. I was in a daze.
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: You were a ghost the whole time.
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: I was dead the whole time.
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: Craziness. What? I love making that the twist of everything.
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: It's become a running theme. It's a twist.
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: It's a twist.
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: What a twist. So, any other horror movies that work
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: for you? Or types of sub-genres that you're always kind
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: of on board for? Not the zombies we've heard. Anything
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: that's like anti-zombie subgenre that you're actually like on board with.
- 1:08:39Speaker 6: Well, horror comedy is generally an interesting adventure.
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: I feel like that's hard to do. Do you have
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: good examples?
- 1:08:48Speaker 7: No, I don't. Horror comedy?
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: What are you talking about? Good examples of horror comedy?
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: I don't.
- 1:08:52Speaker 6: I mean, nothing comes to mind immediately.
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: Again, not to bring up. shawn of the dead i
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: was gonna say not to bring up the horrible zombie
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: idea but it's.
- 1:09:00Speaker 6: Pretty damn all right right well actually any of those
- 1:09:03Speaker 6: in that.
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: Uh string what what is it called the uh ice
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: cream trilogy yeah but there's different yeah.
- 1:09:11Speaker 6: But um what was the hot fuzz That's actually.
- 1:09:17Speaker 8: A great folksy horror film.
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: That thing works for me all the time.
- 1:09:23Speaker 6: And also the, what is the name of that other one?
- 1:09:27Speaker 6: The End of.
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: The World is also sort of the world. It's the
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: sci-fi crossover. It too is a horror film.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: But I think like, what is it, Things We Do
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: in the Dark?
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: Hmm.
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: .
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: .
- 1:10:07Speaker 6: .
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: I feel like my brain is not working today.
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: It has been such a week. My brain is.
- 1:10:15Speaker 6: Definitely not working. It's operating on too few electrolytes.
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: We had our own, like, folksy horror thing going on
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: here for a week.
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: On the folksy horror thing, and this, again, is old
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: news for hardcore people, but have you seen the bitch...
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: which they spelled it with two Vs. It's not my fault.
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: The witch is how I guess they want you to
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: say it.
- 1:10:38Speaker 6: That's relatively new, and no, we haven't. But I've seen the.
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: Previews for it.
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: Yeah, we haven't watched it.
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: That trailer's really good, and then I watched it, and
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: I'm like, it lives up. But it's... I mean, it
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: lives in that time period, which it really is. If
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: you're into old school folksy, it is of that time period.
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: It is not a modernized horror movie at all. It
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: is definitely in and of its time period.
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: Oh my God, this is totally off the topic for
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: horror films. But here's how I got there. This is
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: how I got there. It's a chain of thought in
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: her head. I was thinking of a field in England, right?
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: That's kind of a weird folksy, somewhat... psychological horror film.
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: That took you to Field of Dreams.
- 1:11:20Speaker 6: No.
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: All right, you'll love that, sure. Then J.F.K. and Waterworld.
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:11:26Speaker 7: No, no, wait a minute.
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: Wait, you made me lose it. Oh, come on. Field
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: in England.
- 1:11:32Speaker 7: Okay, Field in England.
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: Oh my God, have you seen Mindhorn?
- 1:11:37Speaker 8: Oh, no.
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: This is not a horror film.
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: Mindhorn is so funny. Is this another sexy times movie?
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: No, it's about.
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: Sounds pretty Mindhorn-y.
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: It's about a British detective from the Isle of Man.
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: No, right? No, no, no.
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: He's an actor who was in a show about.
- 1:11:55Speaker 6: In the 70s.
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: He played a detective show.
- 1:12:05Speaker 6: In the 70s, and there is a modern-day serial killer who,
- 1:12:11Speaker 6: or so we're led to believe, who is invoking the
- 1:12:15Speaker 6: name of Inspector Mindhorn from the television show to assist.
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: And he will only deal.
- 1:12:20Speaker 7: With, yeah.
- 1:12:21Speaker 6: And so they bring the actor back, who has been
- 1:12:25Speaker 6: out of work for the most part for the last
- 1:12:27Speaker 6: 30 years. Interesting.
- 1:12:30Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: It has a song. It's great.
- 1:12:33Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: Yes. So this is a recommend.
- 1:12:36Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: It is a recommend. Sword of Porg. There is a
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: killer involved. There is a killer. It is a mystery.
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: It's totally not. It was completely off topic, but it's
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: so funny.
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: Well, you know, murder mysteries still fall into the genre.
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: It still works. It still falls into the spirit of
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: the season. I believe, yes.
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: The weird town. It's got a weird town kind of
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: thing going on. Isle of Man is very weird. So yeah,
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: that was a good one.
- 1:13:00Speaker 7: But.
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: It has a guy from a field in England, plays Mindhorn,
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: who is a guy from Mighty Boosh.
- 1:13:06Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: Oh, this, okay, so now this brings it back to
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: folksy horror, right? I did come full circle. I had
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: a point.
- 1:13:12Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: Waterworld, that's our point.
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: Waterworld. The, this is like the craziest thing, like talking
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: to me as I try to explain a movie or
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: a TV series without knowing the name. It's the British show,
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: the Are You Local?
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: Oh.
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: Uh, League of Gentlemen?
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: Yes. League of Gentlemen. But they're not extraordinary?
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: No.
- 1:13:35Speaker 8: Oh.
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: Did you ever see that? It was a British... No.
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: Oh, man. I stuck with the extraordinary ones and they
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: had some problems. This was a.
- 1:13:44Speaker 6: Was it a BBC series? And it was... It really
- 1:13:50Speaker 6: was in the surrealist category. I mean, it just was
- 1:13:55Speaker 6: very strange and it involved... A folksy kind of small
- 1:14:02Speaker 6: town England, but there were these old couple that owned
- 1:14:06Speaker 6: a shop on the outskirts of town, and if you
- 1:14:09Speaker 6: weren't local, you were murdered.
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: Are you local?
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: Are you local?
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: And then it just totally goes.
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: It's a way to keep down on tourists.
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: It goes totally off the rails in the last season
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: where there's like a witch doctor, like a New Orleans
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: kind of witch doctor.
- 1:14:29Speaker 6: Oh, God, I don't even remember.
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: Yeah, and he'd always be like, she's my wife now, Dave.
- 1:14:33Speaker 7: Oh, right.
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: That character. Yeah, that's kind of the same thing, but
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: you should check that out.
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: Very strange. Very strange. I can try to remember that.
- 1:14:42Speaker 6: What were we talking about before that? Oh, Mindhorn. Mindhorn, yeah.
- 1:14:48Speaker 6: And so for those truly looking for the obscure would
- 1:14:55Speaker 6: note that there is a song called On the latest
- 1:14:59Speaker 6: Robin Hitchcock album that is not included in the film,
- 1:15:02Speaker 6: but the song is titled Detective Mindhorn.
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: Deep cuts.
- 1:15:07Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: Deep cuts.
- 1:15:08Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:15:09Speaker 6: From an obscure artist.
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: I love him.
- 1:15:14Speaker 6: Anyway, so, yeah, that would, you know. Oh, so the
- 1:15:18Speaker 6: latest recreation of Murder on the Orient Express.
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: I did see that. What did you think of it?
- 1:15:27Speaker 6: I enjoyed it.
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: I did, again, not to bash him repeatedly in this episode,
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: but no spoilers here. You kind of know how there's
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: murder involved. But yeah, I think that's maybe the most
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: productive thing they did was really quickly offing Johnny Depp.
- 1:15:44Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: And the thing is, he's not bad. Like he does
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: his- He was toned down. He's doing that character that's very, again,
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: he's doing it kind of a bit, but it works.
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: But it's still toned down. It's a toned down beat.
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: It works for the character he's playing and it's toned
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: down for him. He's not falling over things and wearing eyeliners.
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: I mean, that's something. So yeah, there's, again, he's another
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: one of those. He can occasionally- turn in a real
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: performance on this string of nonsense that he does.
- 1:16:12Speaker 6: So what did you think of Kenneth Branagh?
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: But Kenneth Branagh, again, across the board, because he's also directing,
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: it's not super showy from the director end of it,
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: but I think if he's focusing more on on-screen... His
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: on-screen presence is pretty good. I don't know that it
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: made enough money to get another one, but I could
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: see them doing more.
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: No, they're working on 12 Little Indians, which is.
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: One of my favorites. I thought they were, but I
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: didn't know if that got.
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: No, I don't think it got.
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: So hopefully it's still going to happen, because I'd like
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: to see more of this character.
- 1:16:44Speaker 6: I liked it. I thought he really made that.
- 1:16:50Speaker 6: Visceral, you know?
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, those Agatha Christie things tend to be
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: very dry and rough, you know? And it's like, this
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: was interesting. And I'd love to see 12 Little Indians.
- 1:17:00Speaker 6: And I'm sure it's not popular for the theater goer.
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: My question, as an illiterate, have you read the book?
- 1:17:10Speaker 6: Years ago.
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: Do you remember, and again, no spoilers, but do they do,
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: the thing that they do at the end that is
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: the big wrap-up, Is that how it is in the book?
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: I don't think that's how it is in the book.
- 1:17:22Speaker 2: Because I thought that was kind of an interesting way
- 1:17:24Speaker 2: to do it, and it made me wonder, did they, again,
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: sometimes they want to change it so that it's like, oh,
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: you can't just get away with, oh, I've read the book,
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: like you need to see the movie because it's a
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: different thing, and vice versa.
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: But, I mean, honestly, like grade school, because my grandmother
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: would always keep Agatha Christie books around, so I read
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: them all that she had.
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: That's what happened to your brain.
- 1:17:42Speaker 6: Yeah, I know.
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: Poisoned as a child.
- 1:17:44Speaker 6: And then she watched Clue, and then it was all
- 1:17:47Speaker 6: thrown out the window. God, Clue.
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: Find Murder Mystery.
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: As I have said many times on this.
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: Which is another thing that should be watched at Halloween.
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: Clue is one of my favorite films.
- 1:17:57Speaker 11: Ever.
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: That does say a lot about you.
- 1:17:59Speaker 7: Ever.
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: It's a great film.
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: I probably would, you know.
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: And there's three different endings.
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: In my 20s and 30s, I never would.
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: Only now. Not in the theater. Well, that's true.
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: I never would have admitted that. You know, I would
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: have been like, oh, I liked Brazil. Actually, I really
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: do love Brazil. Yeah, I'm too cool. Brazil is also
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: in one of my top five.
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: I need to revisit it. I remember thinking it's great,
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: but it didn't... I don't know. I like his more
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: tight-knit stuff. Brazil seemed like it was trying to be
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: big and grand and.
- 1:18:31Speaker 5: Over the top.
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: But I think at the time when I saw that,
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: my little brain was just like, what?
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: See, mine is... Time Bandits?
- 1:18:37Speaker 7: Time Bandits, yeah.
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: See, that's my second. And I need to re-watch this one.
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: I think the maybe most genius and well-structured of his movies... Wait. The.
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: Go ahead.
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: It's 12 Monkeys. Oh. 12 Monkeys is a really well-put-together movie.
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: It's polished in a way that he's super grandiose in
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: some of the older stuff, but a lot of times
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: it kind of loses its way, whereas... think that one
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: is so well done across the.
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: Board i like baron von munchausen because it's like i.
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: Like that but it's crazy like it knows it's crazy
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: and he does not try to hone.
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: It in but i love the muppets on acid yeah
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: you know kind of is like i love.
- 1:19:19Speaker 6: That it's crazy i.
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: Do too which is fine and i think really it
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: is it is impressive that that early i mean one
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: of his first movies is time bandits which i think
- 1:19:27Speaker 2: Is really a well-told story and does hold up over
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: the years.
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: But I think Brazil was just so strange and I
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: had never seen anything like it.
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: It's still genius.
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: And it's still like... I would just watch it and
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: just be like, oh my God.
- 1:19:41Speaker 6: This movie. And that's an interesting topic in and of itself.
- 1:19:45Speaker 6: Can they....
- 1:19:48Speaker 7: Is the.
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: What is that?
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: Crazy cat. Is the market.
- 1:19:53Speaker 6: There today to allow for movies like that to be made.
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: Now, there is... And I would say not... I would
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: say it has to be something like Art House Crowd.
- 1:20:07Speaker 2: Occasionally stuff breaks through. Did you see Mother? No.
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: I just can't go there.
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: I will give you... If you want to see some...
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: It's another one of those that I just give you
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: credit as a filmmaker. How the hell you got that made,
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: I don't know. Because... It's a weird movie in the
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: first half, but as things get rolling, it becomes, holy shit,
- 1:20:30Speaker 2: how did this get through a studio system? Like, who didn't...
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: I know you're kind of a big name director, but
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: you don't have a lot of money makers under your belt.
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: So how a studio watched you doing this and went, okay.
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: Because they had Jennifer Lawrence.
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: That's pretty much it. But even then... Even then, though, like,
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: that to me still wouldn't, because, I mean, audiences saw
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: it and either shrugged or were angry. So, like, it
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: still didn't save it that it had her as a
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: critical acclaim kind of a movie. Or a huge box office.
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: I think it did good that weekend, but then everybody
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: saw it and went, what the hell was that? And
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: then nobody showed.
- 1:21:07Speaker 6: Up after that.
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: So, I don't know. I still don't even think that
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: saved it. So, occasionally one, like, slips through the studio
- 1:21:13Speaker 2: system that is, like, art house dialed up to 11.
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: And what the fuck? And that smothered it. It is
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: definitely that.
- 1:21:21Speaker 6: So you're saying that the environment is still ripe to
- 1:21:26Speaker 6: take advantage of the bureaucracy of giant mega studios.
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: Yeah. Occasionally.
- 1:21:33Speaker 7: Cool.
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: I would say 99 times out of 100, they're going
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: to get shut down.
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: And whoever okayed that is probably at a new studio.
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: Oh, they're fired a long time. So there's hope for.
- 1:21:44Speaker 6: People making odd, strange things just for me.
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: But I think there's a ton of stuff going the
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: indie route. And if you're willing to get by on
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: a million dollar budget versus a hundred million dollar budget,
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: you can make that kind of stuff. And you can
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: find enough investors and individual backers that'll let you make that.
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: Because there's a lot of weird indie movies out there.
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: And are really well made now. Versus, you know, it
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: used to be you'd get some crap. Not that there
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: aren't still crappy ones getting made. But like now there's
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: like technically it's easier to make. So if you get
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: a talented person, they can get the funding. They can
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: make a good movie.
- 1:22:22Speaker 6: There is a revolution that is happening in the last
- 1:22:25Speaker 6: five years of, of, of people unknown, but have enough
- 1:22:31Speaker 6: money to get the modest equipment that you need nowadays
- 1:22:35Speaker 6: to make a good film or a good record or anything.
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: I mean, you can do it in your own house.
- 1:22:40Speaker 7: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: I mean, literally stuff, has been shot on a phone
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: now and turned into a feature film. Yeah, you just need.
- 1:22:50Speaker 6: An iPhone and Final Cut Pro and you're ready to go.
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: Well, I think we're ready to do that.
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: Let's do that. Let's make our own film.
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: We can do that now.
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: We're going to make a horror movie. What do we make?
- 1:23:02Speaker 9: Comes back around.
- 1:23:03Speaker 6: See what I did.
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I know.
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: See what you did. I'm just trying to throw it
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: all on you so you can do the heavy lifting. Thanks, Brian.
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: That's what I'm here for.
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: Oh, I mean, we have a wealth of weird, folksy,
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: creepy Kentucky crap.
- 1:23:15Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true.
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: Oh, my God.
- 1:23:17Speaker 6: Wait.
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: I had the best idea because we went on a
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: bourbon tour.
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: Oh, no.
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: This is a drunken story.
- 1:23:23Speaker 8: No, no, no, no.
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: This is great. And I was like, somebody needs to
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: make like a Dallas bourbon. version, but like.
- 1:23:30Speaker 2: Bourbon. Bourbon. You know?
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: Like a bizarre... Assuming you aren't from here, the land
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: that we live in is overrun by people making bourbon
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: at this.
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: It always has been. That's where it comes from. But
- 1:23:45Speaker 2: in these last, once again, this five year period has
- 1:23:49Speaker 2: just launched a million new bourbon companies. It's the bourbon boom. No,
- 1:23:53Speaker 2: but I mean people... Like everything in this area now
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: kind of revolves around bourbon. So it really is its own... subculture,
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: and bourbon chocolate. It's kind of ripe to be used
- 1:24:03Speaker 2: in some way to make a fun horror movie.
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: The bourbon boom has happened outside of Kentucky. People drink
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: bourbon and love bourbon.
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: But you can't get away from here. You have to
- 1:24:14Speaker 2: be in the core of it or it's not bourbon.
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: Look, we've got how many bottles of bourbon on our.
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: It's just because you're alcohol.
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: No, God no.
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: The fifth bottle was taken. Admitting it is the first step.
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: But anyway.
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: Uh, so yeah, and there's all these crazy stories about,
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: you know, the same people who have worked forever, the
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: same families have all, like, there's always been a beam
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: at any of the, you know, so there's all these
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: like crazy ways that you could like make these.
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: So we're going to create like some sort of, oh,
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: it's a hybrid of national treasure meets justified treasure.
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: You just had to bring up National Treasure.
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: National Treasure means justified. Justified did work. I wanted it
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: to be because it's like all these families have owned
- 1:24:59Speaker 2: it forever. I want it to actually be the same
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: family for hundreds of years. These are just ancient.
- 1:25:05Speaker 8: oh yeah well there could be whatever this core bourbon
- 1:25:09Speaker 8: is that they're drinking keeps them alive and keeps them
- 1:25:12Speaker 8: because they have to like water it down for the
- 1:25:14Speaker 8: rest of the riff.
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: Because the gaelic call it the water of life.
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: So i think i mean i think this is what
- 1:25:19Speaker 2: we need to start writing right now so this is
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: the horror movie we need to.
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: Make yeah that's actually good it's not.
- 1:25:26Speaker 2: Bad actually i've heard much worse horror pitches yeah.
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: So Or we can make Dallas with bourbon fans.
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: I'd also watch that.
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: I would too. We could do both.
- 1:25:35Speaker 6: Just supplant the city of Dallas with the entire state
- 1:25:38Speaker 6: of Kentucky.
- 1:25:39Speaker 7: We'll do both.
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: We have a Netflix series and also a movie. But
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: they're totally different things. They just revolve around bourbon.
- 1:25:44Speaker 2: I'm weakly invested in the new dynasty. So obviously you
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: can sucker me into that. Which is pretty fun if
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: you haven't watched it.
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: There's a new dynasty?
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: Oh yeah. And it's so entertaining. I mean, they know
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: they're a nighttime soap, so it is insane level of
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: nighttime soapness. Wow. And it is very fun.
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: I'll have to start. Because I did start re-watching Dynasty
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: for no reason. And Paul was like, why are you
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: watching this? I was like, I don't know.
- 1:26:11Speaker 2: And they are making, like they do work in, there's
- 1:26:13Speaker 2: even not a crossover character. All the characters are already there,
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: but there's an actor that makes a weird crossover from
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: the old universe into the new universe. So, it's a
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: little wink to the old timey fans. It's fun.
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: Now, if they'd remake Falcon Crest, I'd be all over that.
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: And how come they haven't made a new Fantasy Island?
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: Has anybody tried that?
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: Because it's so ridiculous. How do you... Not that we
- 1:26:37Speaker 2: weren't making a lot of ridiculous stuff, but now we
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: would just make it a reality show.
- 1:26:41Speaker 6: I don't know. I think you could turn that into
- 1:26:44Speaker 6: a horror series.
- 1:26:45Speaker 7: Honestly.
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: Like how it went towards the end. But you could get,
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: you know, celebrities like in the old ones who were
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: kind of their career.
- 1:26:51Speaker 6: Welcome to Fantasy Island.
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: Who was somebody that was always on Fantasy Island? There
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: was always like one or two actors where you're like, well,
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: I guess I got paid this year.
- 1:27:00Speaker 2: Robert Goulet. Although they kind of go hand in hand.
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: They do go hand in hand.
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: The love boat takes you to Fantasy Island.
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: And then the love boat came on before Fantasy Island.
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: And then you hang out with Charo every week.
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: Yeah, because she's on both.
- 1:27:11Speaker 2: She's on every week.
- 1:27:12Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: And she's still out there cheeky-cheeking in it right now.
- 1:27:16Speaker 6: Robert Goulet was always there. Yeah, the guy that was
- 1:27:20Speaker 6: in that Bruce Lee film, he was always there.
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: Oh, the tall guy?
- 1:27:23Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: And Jamie Farr on this week's episode, The Love Boat.
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: Oh, see, that'd be great.
- 1:27:33Speaker 6: I used to watch The Love Boat a lot, and
- 1:27:35Speaker 6: I don't think I really enjoyed it. But it was
- 1:27:38Speaker 6: the only thing that was on.
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: And it was on for Fantasy Island, which I would
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: watch because I liked it when they had the weird
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: creepy stories on Fantasy Island.
- 1:27:44Speaker 6: I could never stay up that late. I was always
- 1:27:45Speaker 6: told to go to bed.
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: And you listened to it.
- 1:27:49Speaker 6: Well, I mean, occasionally I would just sort of fall
- 1:27:51Speaker 6: asleep in the hallway.
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: Oh, I do that now.
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: I just stayed up.
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: That's why you're breaking up.
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: Back to horror movies.
- 1:28:00Speaker 6: Runaway.
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: Does that count?
- 1:28:02Speaker 6: Runaway.
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: With Tom Selleck and... Oh.
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: Sci-fi horror. Oh, yeah. That's a sci-fi horror. The fact
- 1:28:07Speaker 2: that Gene Simmons is in it and you have to
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: look at his face is a horror movie. So, yeah.
- 1:28:12Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:28:13Speaker 6: Yeah. That one, I love that. I love that movie.
- 1:28:17Speaker 6: That's a tasty little number.
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: Again, kind of a lost sci-fi classic. I'm using that
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: a little loosely.
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: See, I say I don't like sci-fi, yet I love
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: all these sci-fi things.
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: These are all, to me, sci-fi.
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: But I don't like.
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: But mechanical spiders coming at your face is still horror.
- 1:28:35Speaker 6: It's horror.
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: It's cyborg. Or, you know.
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: I don't like sci-fi. It's like everything I talk about
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: is a sci-fi film.
- 1:28:43Speaker 8: Yes.
- 1:28:44Speaker 2: Yes, it is.
- 1:28:47Speaker 6: Yeah. I like the 80s martial artist....
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: Sci-fi crossovers. There's such a thing? All of them.
- 1:28:58Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: Oh, my God, we watched Mortal Kombat. That was a hoot.
- 1:29:03Speaker 6: Mortal Kombat. Not in a horror sense.
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: No, we just watched it.
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: Some people would find it horrific.
- 1:29:09Speaker 6: It's pretty cool. I mean, it is sort of, you know,
- 1:29:13Speaker 6: like alternate universe world kind of scenario thing.
- 1:29:17Speaker 2: After we're done, I will pitch another movie to you
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: only because... If you were paying attention, listeners, you already
- 1:29:24Speaker 2: heard this on a recent episode. But there's one that
- 1:29:27Speaker 2: someone brought to my attention recently that I had no
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: idea existed and is very Mortal Kombat-y. So I'll elaborate.
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: And if you don't know what I'm talking about, email me.
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: I'll point you to that episode. Anyway, there's another crossover
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: sort of unofficial Mortal Kombat movie for you to watch.
- 1:29:46Speaker 6: So.
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: We'll get to that later, but.
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: We'll forget. You better say it now because we'll forget.
- 1:29:51Speaker 6: Does it involve Jean-Claude Van Damme? No. Please.
- 1:29:57Speaker 2: So.
- 1:29:58Speaker 6: That's too bad.
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: More horror recommendations? Is that what you're looking for? Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: I did think of when you were describing stuff that
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: you're into. Have you seen House of the Devil?
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: No.
- 1:30:13Speaker 2: It came to my memory because earlier today Misty was
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: bashing it. Misty is not a fan of it, but
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: I thought based on the way you were describing stuff
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: you like, you might like that.
- 1:30:25Speaker 6: That's the modern movie that was shot to look like.
- 1:30:28Speaker 3: It was an 80s film.
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: It's very 80s stylized. She's the girl in the house.
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: Yeah, that was good.
- 1:30:35Speaker 2: Loved it. It's definitely.
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: Is that an Australian movie or a New Zealand movie?
- 1:30:39Speaker 6: No, you're thinking of, there's another film that you're thinking
- 1:30:43Speaker 6: of that was Australian and it's about the guy that
- 1:30:47Speaker 6: lives in the walls and is watching the... That was good.
- 1:30:51Speaker 6: I'm trying to remember the name of that film.
- 1:30:53Speaker 2: Bad Ronald. That's just Bad Ronald. Have you not seen
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: Bad Ronald? See, I don't know if they purposely ripped
- 1:31:00Speaker 2: it off, but that is... Once again, this shows you
- 1:31:03Speaker 2: the kind of culture we grew up with. That was
- 1:31:06Speaker 2: a made-for-TV movie in the 70s. Fun 70s that we
- 1:31:11Speaker 2: grew up in. But it is a... Basically, yeah, because
- 1:31:14Speaker 2: we did an episode on it once again. But yeah,
- 1:31:17Speaker 2: it's a made-for-TV 70s movie. This weird kid lives with
- 1:31:22Speaker 2: his mom in this house, and he... accidentally kills someone
- 1:31:27Speaker 2: and then mom doesn't want him to get busted and
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: go to jail so she hides him in their house
- 1:31:33Speaker 2: and then like so she basically like hides him when
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: the police come i don't know where he went then
- 1:31:38Speaker 2: she builds like a false wall and like hides him
- 1:31:40Speaker 2: inside the walls inside of her house mom dies So
- 1:31:47Speaker 2: then he can't come out, so they move stuff out
- 1:31:50Speaker 2: of the house. New family moves in. There's a weird
- 1:31:52Speaker 2: dude living in your walls. This was a made-for-television movie.
- 1:31:57Speaker 2: This is why 70s kids are so jacked up.
- 1:31:59Speaker 6: That sounds just like Housebound, which came out in 2014.
- 1:32:04Speaker 2: Very bad.
- 1:32:05Speaker 6: But Australian and a girl, very similar tale. They move
- 1:32:13Speaker 6: into the house, and this dude's been living in the
- 1:32:14Speaker 6: walls for decades. Yeah. Ends up saving everyone's life.
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: Spoiler. Yeah, spoiler, spoiler, spoiler. I can't even talk.
- 1:32:25Speaker 3: Oh, man.
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: But yeah, there was like a whole... I always wonder
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: if it was just my imagination in the 70s and 80s,
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: or if this really existed, that there was a whole
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: thing about like creepy houses and people having these parties
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: in these... Creepy houses. There were no key parties. And
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: then everybody dies. Or there's an old man that's barely
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: alive upstairs. I mean, it's like I've created this entire
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: genre of movies.
- 1:32:55Speaker 2: I've got a good one. Maybe these are the movies
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: we need to be making because you did make them up,
- 1:32:59Speaker 2: but now you need to create them into real movies.
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: But you know what I mean? There's this whole series,
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: and I'm like, was that a thing? Or is this
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: just a weird.
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: think this sounds like an amalgam of many things from
- 1:33:10Speaker 2: your brain in the 70s and you've turned it into
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: one movie that you're trying to remember the name of
- 1:33:15Speaker 2: yeah and it's not.
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: A thing and there's a hawk.
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: And people are like no that that was a yeti.
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: And the hawk like scraped somebody's face off no face.
- 1:33:25Speaker 2: And then attacked the six million dollar man and i
- 1:33:29Speaker 2: it I saw that episode, yeah.
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: It was a face-off scenario between the $ 6 million man
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: and the chip guys. Chips guys.
- 1:33:40Speaker 2: Larry Wilcox? Yeah. Recently brought up Larry Wilcox?
- 1:33:45Speaker 6: Never mind.
- 1:33:46Speaker 2: Anyway, I'm trying to think, and that reminded me because
- 1:33:49Speaker 2: I looked up the Ty West rundown. Have you seen
- 1:33:52Speaker 2: The Innkeepers?
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: That sounds familiar.
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: An old hotel that they're closing down.
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: I think we've seen that, Paul.
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: It has Pat Healy, previous guest on the show, who
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: is freaking awesome in it.
- 1:34:08Speaker 6: Is it anything like Motel Hell?
- 1:34:10Speaker 7: No.
- 1:34:11Speaker 2: Which is fun, but in an entirely different way. The
- 1:34:14Speaker 2: Innkeepers is fun because it's him and Sarah Paxton who
- 1:34:16Speaker 2: is also freaking amazing. So both Pat and Sarah are
- 1:34:20Speaker 2: kind of the bulk of that movie. It's got Kelly
- 1:34:24Speaker 2: McGillis in a smaller role. coming back out of nowhere.
- 1:34:27Speaker 2: She all of a sudden started popping up in a
- 1:34:29Speaker 2: couple of movies at that point. But yeah, it's mostly
- 1:34:32Speaker 2: Pat and Sarah and they're in this hotel. And the
- 1:34:36Speaker 2: reason to me it works so well is usually you
- 1:34:39Speaker 2: get most horror movies are just light on characters and
- 1:34:43Speaker 2: a whole lot of killing and a whole lot of
- 1:34:45Speaker 2: ghosts or whatever the hell it's about. This goes the
- 1:34:47Speaker 2: other way. It's been so much time building up these
- 1:34:50Speaker 2: two characters that And you kind of love them. They're
- 1:34:54Speaker 2: weird and silly, but you are still kind of engrossed
- 1:34:58Speaker 2: in the horror element, but you're really getting attached to
- 1:35:02Speaker 2: these characters. So by the time there is some sort
- 1:35:05Speaker 2: of paranormal horror effect going on later, but by then
- 1:35:11Speaker 2: you're so invested in these characters that I think it
- 1:35:14Speaker 2: pays off so well because of that. So I think
- 1:35:17Speaker 2: it helps that he does a great job writing and
- 1:35:20Speaker 2: directing these characters, and you've got two great actors there.
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: So yeah, Innkeepers, if you haven't seen it, is awesome.
- 1:35:27Speaker 6: What was that film that.
- 1:35:32Speaker 6: With Dan Aykroyd as the.
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: Nothing But Trouble?
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: Nothing But Trouble.
- 1:35:38Speaker 2: Is that it?
- 1:35:39Speaker 8: Yep.
- 1:35:39Speaker 2: It's a nightmare. I have not watched it in... Crazy
- 1:35:42Speaker 2: New Jersey Town?
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: We watched it maybe a year ago.
- 1:35:45Speaker 2: God.
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: It's crazy.
- 1:35:48Speaker 2: I love it. Does it hold up? And I'm saying
- 1:35:51Speaker 2: that like it ever did.
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: Well, I'll tell you. It holds up as well as it.
- 1:35:56Speaker 2: As the first time I saw it.
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: As the first time, yeah.
- 1:35:57Speaker 2: And I went, what the hell was that? I think
- 1:36:00Speaker 2: I saw that in the theater.
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: Really?
- 1:36:01Speaker 2: Like, I think I went and went. It was fantastic.
- 1:36:03Speaker 5: What?
- 1:36:04Speaker 2: This is a new movie with a lot of... Look,
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: Demi Moore. She's in big movies. Let's go see it. Wait, what?
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: I think it's like I only saw it on weird
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: hours on USA when they used to show awesome, terrible movies.
- 1:36:17Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: Sightseers. That's another one I want to see.
- 1:36:21Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: Have you seen that?
- 1:36:23Speaker 2: No. I know of it.
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:36:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: I keep saying I'm going to watch it.
- 1:36:29Speaker 2: I've heard good things if I'm remembering the right movie,
- 1:36:31Speaker 2: but again, there's so many to keep track of.
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: But yeah, that Nothing But Trouble is... Oh my God,
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: it has the Humpty... Digital Underground.
- 1:36:41Speaker 2: Digital Underground.
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: Why?
- 1:36:43Speaker 6: Why?
- 1:36:44Speaker 2: Why does anything work in Humpty Hump? But there you go.
- 1:36:48Speaker 6: It was a thing. What year did that movie come out?
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: What are you talking about?
- 1:36:52Speaker 6: Nothing But Trouble.
- 1:36:53Speaker 2: 1990?
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: It came out later than you would think. That was
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: the weirdest part.
- 1:36:58Speaker 2: It was early, yeah, it was like 90, early 90s.
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: It was like maybe 92.
- 1:37:01Speaker 8: 91.
- 1:37:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: But it looks like it would have been like 87.
- 1:37:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: I wonder if it got made in 87 and then
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: just sat around and they were like.
- 1:37:07Speaker 2: Because studio heads looked at it and went, what the
- 1:37:10Speaker 2: hell is this?
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: We have to put the stinker out at some point.
- 1:37:13Speaker 2: Dan keeps bugging me. He calls me every day. Are
- 1:37:16Speaker 2: we going to put out my movie yet? I need
- 1:37:20Speaker 2: some more money to make vodka.
- 1:37:22Speaker 3: Come on.
- 1:37:22Speaker 6: Chevy Chase and Demi Moore. Yeah.
- 1:37:25Speaker 2: Now, I was going to say, because you said you
- 1:37:28Speaker 2: wanted an updated Invisible Man, did you ever see Memoirs
- 1:37:31Speaker 2: of an Invisible Man? Which I think the most misstep
- 1:37:38Speaker 2: that they took was casting Chevy Chase. I think he
- 1:37:41Speaker 2: is the wrong casting. But it's really interesting as a...
- 1:37:47Speaker 2: real again as real as you can get because it
- 1:37:49Speaker 2: looks mostly at the problems of everybody, oh, it'd be
- 1:37:53Speaker 2: great if I was invisible. He's like, I can't eat.
- 1:37:56Speaker 2: I can't go anywhere. It comes up with every horrible scenario.
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: It is a horror movie in the sense that all
- 1:38:03Speaker 2: the bad side of having this, they'd be like, oh,
- 1:38:07Speaker 2: it'd be great and hang out in the girls' locker room. Like, no.
- 1:38:10Speaker 2: How about when you eat, you watch the food dissolve
- 1:38:14Speaker 2: in you because it's visible until it gets taken into
- 1:38:18Speaker 2: your system, right? And you can't go outside because you'll
- 1:38:22Speaker 2: get run over by a car because nobody can see you.
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: There's all these weird little elements to it that are
- 1:38:28Speaker 2: such a downside. to that scenario that never really get
- 1:38:32Speaker 2: addressed in the old Invisible Man movies. And again, I
- 1:38:36Speaker 2: did an episode on it. It is one of the few...
- 1:38:39Speaker 2: the character does not go insane. Almost everyone, all the
- 1:38:42Speaker 2: way up through Hollow Man, you know, it's like they
- 1:38:45Speaker 2: lose their freaking mind when it happens. This one, he
- 1:38:48Speaker 2: stays sane the whole time, and it's him sort of
- 1:38:50Speaker 2: rationally trying to deal with being invisible.
- 1:38:55Speaker 6: It's the Gollum syndrome.
- 1:38:57Speaker 2: Other than the miscasting issue, which he tries to be
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: as straight as he can. Like, it's not overly silly, actually,
- 1:39:05Speaker 2: for him. But it still feels weird. Like, because we
- 1:39:09Speaker 2: know him as nothing but comedy, it's hard to see.
- 1:39:12Speaker 6: Him do straight. Because he falls down and he stares.
- 1:39:15Speaker 2: There's a silly little trip at some point, and I'm like,
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: he did that out of muscle memory. There's times when
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: I'm like, that doesn't fit anything else going on in
- 1:39:25Speaker 2: this John Carpenter movie, by the way. That's a John
- 1:39:27Speaker 2: Carpenter movie? Forgotten John Carpenter movie that I'm like, there's
- 1:39:30Speaker 2: just stuff that doesn't match. All of it doesn't really match,
- 1:39:34Speaker 2: but it makes for a really interesting movie. So it's
- 1:39:37Speaker 2: worth revisiting. Not perfect, mind you, but. You get to
- 1:39:41Speaker 2: see Sam Neill be a bastard, which he's really good at.
- 1:39:44Speaker 2: Sam Neill?
- 1:39:45Speaker 6: Yep.
- 1:39:45Speaker 2: I love Sam Neill. But he can play a bastard
- 1:39:47Speaker 2: really well.
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: He's great.
- 1:39:55Speaker 2: Can you think of another outer space horror movie? Because
- 1:39:58Speaker 2: I thought there was another one. Well, yeah, not the
- 1:40:01Speaker 2: slashers that all went to space.
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: Was another like weird one right.
- 1:40:05Speaker 2: At the same time and then I could not find.
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: It just like there were the two water movies yes.
- 1:40:10Speaker 2: It's like I started trying to think I was like
- 1:40:11Speaker 2: I remember it recently seen it like a table on
- 1:40:15Speaker 2: a convention or something and then I could like I
- 1:40:17Speaker 2: even started looking it up trying to find a weird
- 1:40:20Speaker 2: one from that same era and I cannot think of
- 1:40:23Speaker 2: what it was I swear there.
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: Was another way for it was almost more enjoyable than
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: Event Horizon because Event Horizon.
- 1:40:30Speaker 2: Just got super weird I remember it's been so long
- 1:40:33Speaker 2: It's another one I want to put on the list.
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: Event Horizon is a strange movie. I remember seeing it
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: when it came out and I was like, but then
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: it has stuck with you for years.
- 1:40:46Speaker 2: People still reference it more than you would think.
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: It's a weird trip.
- 1:40:50Speaker 6: Yeah, but there was another space movie.
- 1:40:55Speaker 2: Matt LeBlanc in Lost in Space. Hey, that space monkey
- 1:41:00Speaker 2: was horror. What are you talking about?
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: I saw that on a plane.
- 1:41:05Speaker 6: Did you?
- 1:41:05Speaker 2: Yeah. I still feel like, again, kind of bad casting there,
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: but I still feel like the first half of that
- 1:41:12Speaker 2: is still a pretty solid sci-fi movie.
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: Isn't Gary Oldman in that too?
- 1:41:14Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: He plays Doc.
- 1:41:15Speaker 2: He's great in it.
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: He's great.
- 1:41:17Speaker 2: And that robot was cool, but you hit that, like
- 1:41:19Speaker 2: it literally shifts in the middle into an entirely different movie. Yeah.
- 1:41:23Speaker 2: When they hit that weird time loop and you see
- 1:41:26Speaker 2: a hole in space open up and you're like, and
- 1:41:28Speaker 2: there goes the movie I was watching and here's a
- 1:41:30Speaker 2: whole new movie. And it's like, For as cheesy as
- 1:41:34Speaker 2: it was, fighting mechanical spiders was pretty cool. That first
- 1:41:39Speaker 2: half had some cool action stuff to it that I
- 1:41:42Speaker 2: was on board with. Then it just takes a weird turn.
- 1:41:46Speaker 6: I loved Matt LeBlanc in Episodes, the TV series. Did
- 1:41:51Speaker 6: you see that? That's a great show.
- 1:41:52Speaker 3: Not horror.
- 1:41:54Speaker 6: Good luck. I couldn't find it.
- 1:41:55Speaker 2: Episodes is about.
- 1:42:02Speaker 6: These two writers from Great Britain who have an existing
- 1:42:05Speaker 6: show and they make a U.S. version and it totally
- 1:42:07Speaker 6: gets hijacked by the.
- 1:42:10Speaker 2: Which happens most of the time. Yeah.
- 1:42:13Speaker 6: But Matt LeBlanc is in it and he is so good.
- 1:42:15Speaker 6: A purely... despicable and what i assume is very realistic
- 1:42:24Speaker 6: version of himself and i've.
- 1:42:26Speaker 2: I realized again i didn't ever set out to watch
- 1:42:29Speaker 2: it but it kept coming on while i was sitting
- 1:42:31Speaker 2: in front of the tv doing something else and like
- 1:42:34Speaker 2: that new sitcom where he's the dad he's again i
- 1:42:38Speaker 2: got so used to him being joey all he did
- 1:42:40Speaker 2: was joey so i was like i guess that's all
- 1:42:42Speaker 2: he can do Cause even lost in space, he's kind
- 1:42:45Speaker 2: of Joey in space. Like it's not that different, but
- 1:42:48Speaker 2: like basically I was like, he's actually not being Joey.
- 1:42:52Speaker 2: Like he's kind of doing an entirely different character, which
- 1:42:55Speaker 2: I didn't know.
- 1:42:56Speaker 6: That he could do.
- 1:42:57Speaker 2: Cause I'd heard decent things about episodes, but yeah, I'm like,
- 1:43:00Speaker 2: even in this sitcom scenario where it would be real
- 1:43:02Speaker 2: easy to fall back into Joey mode, he's doing a
- 1:43:05Speaker 2: different thing. I will give him credit. It's not the
- 1:43:08Speaker 2: greatest sitcom ever, but like it's watchable and, And he's
- 1:43:11Speaker 2: kind of doing a different character.
- 1:43:13Speaker 6: You didn't care for it?
- 1:43:14Speaker 2: I didn't think he had that in him. For what?
- 1:43:17Speaker 6: Episodes?
- 1:43:18Speaker 2: I didn't watch it. That's what I'm saying. All I
- 1:43:20Speaker 2: had to go on was like, this show and Joey.
- 1:43:22Speaker 2: And I'm just like, huh, this is actually surprising. Well,
- 1:43:26Speaker 2: you should watch episodes. That's what I've heard. I've heard
- 1:43:28Speaker 2: good things. You should watch episodes.
- 1:43:29Speaker 6: It's good. It's funny. It's very funny in a very
- 1:43:31Speaker 6: British humor kind of way.
- 1:43:34Speaker 2: Which....
- 1:43:36Speaker 6: They actually make fun of British humor.
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: It is its own weird thing.
- 1:43:42Speaker 6: I'm chomping on chips right now.
- 1:43:44Speaker 2: Have you found space horror? No. I haven't found it.
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: I'm still looking.
- 1:43:51Speaker 2: Space horror.
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: I looked up space horror.
- 1:43:53Speaker 2: I tried that. It didn't work.
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: Nothing?
- 1:43:56Speaker 2: I might be making it up. It might have slipped
- 1:43:59Speaker 2: into a Berenstain Bears universe. I don't know. It might
- 1:44:03Speaker 2: be like, I swear there was two, but now there's not.
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: I swear you're right, because I always thought it was funny.
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: I was like, oh, there's two water movies. Oh, there's
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: two space movies. Because there was one about.
- 1:44:14Speaker 2: There's two volcano movies. There's two asteroids hitting the Earth movies.
- 1:44:18Speaker 2: There's two old men in space movies. They all come
- 1:44:19Speaker 2: along at the same time.
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: They travel in pairs.
- 1:44:22Speaker 2: Which they say that.
- 1:44:24Speaker 6: the cataclysmic Earth asteroid event is not ever going to happen.
- 1:44:32Speaker 2: That's not what they said in Deep Impact.
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: It wasn't pitch black, but pitch black was okay.
- 1:44:39Speaker 2: I can't watch it now. At the time, I don't
- 1:44:41Speaker 2: remember thinking it was bad. Now all I see is
- 1:44:44Speaker 2: Vin Diesel, and I can't watch Vin Diesel. Because he's
- 1:44:47Speaker 2: Vin Diesel, and I'm creeped out by him. I'm just like, oh,
- 1:44:50Speaker 2: shut up.
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't like him. It wasn't Screamers.
- 1:44:55Speaker 2: No, but I watched that in the recent years. It's
- 1:44:57Speaker 2: pretty entertaining. Yeah. Way more than I expected. I had
- 1:45:00Speaker 2: fun with Screamers.
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: It's weird. Like, it's kind of creepy.
- 1:45:03Speaker 2: Yeah, and just a strange little universe that they build
- 1:45:07Speaker 2: where I'm like, when did this happen?
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: It's another one of those that'll just be on at
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: some weird hour, and I'll be like, what is this?
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: And then I'm like, oh, it's that movie.
- 1:45:15Speaker 2: I specifically sought it out. I was like, this is
- 1:45:17Speaker 2: one of those I never watched, and I feel like
- 1:45:20Speaker 2: I probably would have liked, but I just never got
- 1:45:22Speaker 2: around to it, and I found it.
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: I'm still looking, you guys, but you're totally right.
- 1:45:28Speaker 6: Well, do you have Amazon Prime?
- 1:45:33Speaker 2: No, they charge money for that.
- 1:45:35Speaker 5: They do.
- 1:45:37Speaker 6: Well, this wouldn't necessarily be your gateway to it if
- 1:45:43Speaker 6: you're a longtime fan of the Mystery Science Theater. But
- 1:45:48Speaker 6: the Riff Trax guys are now on Amazon Prime all
- 1:45:52Speaker 6: over the place. And so that's always a hoot.
- 1:45:55Speaker 2: Actually, again, Misty told me this earlier today, so straight
- 1:45:58Speaker 2: line to you guys.
- 1:45:59Speaker 8: Yes.
- 1:46:00Speaker 2: No.
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: No?
- 1:46:01Speaker 2: That's not the one I'm thinking of, but that is... Again,
- 1:46:04Speaker 2: that's more of like straight sci-fi with horror elements, which
- 1:46:07Speaker 2: is what every... Or with supernaturally mystical universe elements, which
- 1:46:12Speaker 2: is what every sci-fi movie does, and I wish they
- 1:46:14Speaker 2: would stop doing that.
- 1:46:15Speaker 7: But.
- 1:46:16Speaker 2: Well, that was 1998.
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: When did.
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: Event Horizon was 97.
- 1:46:22Speaker 2: Still not the... It's not the schlocky horror I was
- 1:46:25Speaker 2: thinking of. I'm thinking it's a little more... just like, again,
- 1:46:32Speaker 2: it wants to be like a standard horror movie, they
- 1:46:35Speaker 2: just happen to set it in space. Which Sphere is not.
- 1:46:38Speaker 2: Sphere is a very sci-fi movie that they went, what
- 1:46:41Speaker 2: if we make a mystically crazy horror element to it? Oh, yeah,
- 1:46:48Speaker 2: supposedly on, if you have Roku, there's now like some
- 1:46:53Speaker 2: new subsection channel of Roku that you can get that's
- 1:46:57Speaker 2: just included as part of it. And there is a
- 1:46:59Speaker 2: channel running 24-7, nothing but Mystery Science Theater. I think
- 1:47:04Speaker 2: there's also a Riff Track subsection, but like Mystery Science Theater,
- 1:47:08Speaker 2: there's so many that it's.
- 1:47:09Speaker 6: Just on a loop.
- 1:47:10Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just going to loop. Yeah, so geeks, go
- 1:47:13Speaker 2: get yourself that, I guess.
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: You know, I missed many classes in college so I
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: could hang out and watch Mystery Science Theater.
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: At midnight, because, you know, back in the day. I
- 1:47:22Speaker 2: don't know.
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: I think it was Andre.
- 1:47:23Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:47:24Speaker 1: Maybe it wasn't.
- 1:47:25Speaker 2: I don't know. That was just Thanksgiving for you.
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: I think it was on a lot. Maybe I was
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: up that late.
- 1:47:34Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:47:35Speaker 6: I'm wondering if there's... Oh, there's so many Halloween-oriented riff
- 1:47:42Speaker 6: tracks available on Prime right now. One being the Psychotronic Man. Nice. Who,
- 1:47:49Speaker 6: you know, I don't want to give it away, but
- 1:47:52Speaker 6: he kills people psychically.
- 1:47:55Speaker 2: Is he Psychotronic? Oh, God, that's so good.
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: We've watched that, haven't we?
- 1:47:59Speaker 6: And by good, she means it's so awful that it's
- 1:48:02Speaker 6: really funny.
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I am lowbrow. I am totally lowbrow.
- 1:48:05Speaker 2: I'll say that about myself.
- 1:48:07Speaker 6: And the incredible two-headed transplant.
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: I was a completely annoying kid who did things like
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: Brazil and artsy movies. And then as I turned into
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: an adult, I was like... You're like, I'm going.
- 1:48:18Speaker 2: To kill all those brain cells.
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: This is rough. I just want to watch stuff blow up,
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: which is like the most typical thing, American thing I
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: could say.
- 1:48:27Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: I just want to watch things blow up.
- 1:48:30Speaker 6: Carnival of Souls.
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: There's nothing wrong with that.
- 1:48:32Speaker 6: Is that something?
- 1:48:33Speaker 2: In my book.
- 1:48:34Speaker 6: Have we seen Carnival of Souls?
- 1:48:36Speaker 2: Like the original... They did at least one remake. I
- 1:48:40Speaker 2: feel like maybe two.
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: I think there's two.
- 1:48:42Speaker 2: Yeah. I feel like there's a recent one, too.
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:48:47Speaker 2: I have the Smittle one at home that I think
- 1:48:51Speaker 2: I borrowed from Phillip like 12 years ago and still
- 1:48:54Speaker 2: haven't given him back. And he didn't ask for it. Actually,
- 1:48:58Speaker 2: I told him. I was like, I think I still
- 1:48:59Speaker 2: have that. He's like, yeah, whatever.
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: So did you ever see the remake of Dr.
- 1:49:03Speaker 6: Caligari?
- 1:49:05Speaker 2: No. Oh, I like the original.
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: I don't think you would like the new one.
- 1:49:10Speaker 2: How recent are we talking?
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: Like in the 80s.
- 1:49:13Speaker 2: Hmm. If they didn't get Tim Burton to direct it,
- 1:49:17Speaker 2: they missed their window.
- 1:49:18Speaker 1: Yeah, they did.
- 1:49:19Speaker 2: Because if anything, like, you think at the time, if
- 1:49:22Speaker 2: you grew up watching Tim Burton movies, you were like, man,
- 1:49:25Speaker 2: this guy is so cool and original. And you're like, oh, no,
- 1:49:27Speaker 2: he stole everything from Tim Burton. Usually from German Expressionists. So, yeah.
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it was. I think it was a German.
- 1:49:35Speaker 2: Yeah. At least they gave it to a weird German. Yeah.
- 1:49:39Speaker 2: That is fitting, I suppose.
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: That's worth checking out if you haven't seen it.
- 1:49:42Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: I mean, and it's not great, but it's a really
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: good class.
- 1:49:46Speaker 2: Again, I feel like I need to watch everything eventually.
- 1:49:48Speaker 2: I'm just way, way behind.
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: There's so much stuff. That's the problem. Like, when we
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: start looking on- And.
- 1:49:54Speaker 2: Usually I just fall asleep.
- 1:49:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:49:55Speaker 2: I barely crack a movie a week anymore.
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: Because it takes effort, right?
- 1:50:02Speaker 8: Because it's like- Because I'm doing this much.
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: Well, no, but you know what I mean? And then
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: you want to go to sleep, and.
- 1:50:07Speaker 2: Then- editing and planning the next episode and trying to
- 1:50:11Speaker 2: spin six other plates and then i'm like now let's
- 1:50:14Speaker 2: watch a movie and then i.
- 1:50:14Speaker 6: Immediately go to sleep so yeah cyborg cop 2 electric boogaloo.
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: Have we seen cyborg.
- 1:50:24Speaker 6: Cop i want to say that we have.
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: We've watched a lot of bad movies That's kind of like.
- 1:50:32Speaker 2: Seems to be.
- 1:50:33Speaker 6: We've been on a kick here.
- 1:50:34Speaker 2: And again is why we need to just do this more.
- 1:50:37Speaker 2: We need to pick specific ones and we can start
- 1:50:40Speaker 2: talking about them at great length.
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: What do we want to talk about in our next...
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: Let's pick a movie.
- 1:50:46Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:50:47Speaker 1: I can do this.
- 1:50:49Speaker 2: Do we need it to be horror or do we
- 1:50:50Speaker 2: think we'll get back in time? There's only a few weeks.
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: Before we miss that Halloween window. Well, I'm going to
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: be out of town next week.
- 1:50:57Speaker 2: We can not specifically pick horror. We can just pick bad,
- 1:51:00Speaker 2: and then we can assign that for our next get-together.
- 1:51:03Speaker 2: It could be horror. Coincidentally. There's never a bad time
- 1:51:08Speaker 2: to watch a horror movie.
- 1:51:09Speaker 9: No, I agree.
- 1:51:09Speaker 2: So feel free to pick horror.
- 1:51:11Speaker 6: Once the daylight starts to slip away.
- 1:51:16Speaker 1: Have we ever talked about this movie, and it's terrible,
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: and it's a horror movie? And I've probably mentioned it
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: on here before because I'm a broken record. It's like
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: Terror at 40,000 Feet. Okay, here we go.
- 1:51:28Speaker 2: I know the title. I'm trying to think.
- 1:51:30Speaker 1: William Shatner on a plane.
- 1:51:32Speaker 2: That's a Twilight Zone episode.
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: Returning from England with parts of a haunted castle on board.
- 1:51:41Speaker 6: Oh, yes.
- 1:51:42Speaker 2: Okay, how have I not seen this?
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: You have not seen this?
- 1:51:45Speaker 2: So you're saying this is the next episode. We're going
- 1:51:48Speaker 2: to watch this.
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: If it exists in some.
- 1:51:51Speaker 2: I don't think it can get near as horrifying... as
- 1:51:55Speaker 2: a recent episode of Columbo that I watched where William
- 1:51:59Speaker 2: Shatner had a mustache.
- 1:52:01Speaker 1: Can I ask you something? Do you enjoy weird Columbo episodes?
- 1:52:05Speaker 2: I kind of, I mean, it's another one. I don't
- 1:52:08Speaker 2: seek it out, but I watch a lot of me
- 1:52:10Speaker 2: TV and they just play Columbo on a loop some nights.
- 1:52:13Speaker 2: So I'm like, I kind of love Peter Falk anyway,
- 1:52:17Speaker 2: but like the, the, the parade of guest stars that
- 1:52:21Speaker 2: show up, like, 80s era, or maybe even early 90s
- 1:52:25Speaker 2: era Williams. Because I think it was the comeback. Oh,
- 1:52:28Speaker 2: the second round of Columbo. Yeah, that last ditch effort
- 1:52:32Speaker 2: of like, let's get some more Columbos made. And like,
- 1:52:35Speaker 2: you know what? It's terrible because I can show you
- 1:52:38Speaker 2: his mustache. I took a picture of the TV. Because
- 1:52:40Speaker 2: people were not... Again, I was going to see Misty
- 1:52:43Speaker 2: the next day. I'm like, oh no. I'm trying to
- 1:52:45Speaker 2: describe to her how bad it is over the internet.
- 1:52:48Speaker 2: And it's not going to do it. I need to visually...
- 1:52:52Speaker 2: show you how pretend this mustache is because it's not
- 1:52:57Speaker 2: even really a mustache and it's disturbing. You will feel
- 1:53:00Speaker 2: pain in your soul when you see it. Just hold
- 1:53:03Speaker 2: on a second.
- 1:53:05Speaker 6: While he's looking at that, so is it terror at 40,000 feet?
- 1:53:08Speaker 6: I think so. Or is it nightmare at 20,000 feet?
- 1:53:11Speaker 1: I don't know. I mean, you know, I have a
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: tendency to get.
- 1:53:13Speaker 2: That's the Twilight Zone episode.
- 1:53:15Speaker 1: I have a tendency to get names wrong. But I'm
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: pretty sure.
- 1:53:20Speaker 2: Or the horror at 37,000 feet.
- 1:53:21Speaker 6: Maybe it's that.
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: Maybe I rounded up.
- 1:53:24Speaker 2: I rounded up. Prepare yourself. This is going to be terrible.
- 1:53:28Speaker 2: It's William Shatner with a pretend not really a mustache.
- 1:53:32Speaker 2: What the fuck?
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: What is that?
- 1:53:34Speaker 2: What the fuck is that? What is on his lip?
- 1:53:38Speaker 2: First of all, it's barely there. It's like he's 12
- 1:53:41Speaker 2: years old. On top of that, why is it so high?
- 1:53:44Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: Look at all this empty space above his lip.
- 1:53:47Speaker 2: That's where you should be putting a mustache, dude. What
- 1:53:50Speaker 2: the fuck is that?
- 1:53:51Speaker 6: That is weird.
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: What is that? So if you watch Columbo, do you
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: ever catch a, God, what's the James Gardner thing? Rockford Files?
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: Rockford Files. So I love Rockford Files.
- 1:54:02Speaker 2: I haven't seen much of that lately. I remember it
- 1:54:05Speaker 2: being on back in the day more than anything.
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: It's on that same thing.
- 1:54:08Speaker 2: But I've heard, yeah, I've heard it's back.
- 1:54:09Speaker 1: So let me tell you my favorite thing about it.
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: It's bad, but I just like to see how high
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: he pulls his pants up. There's some episodes where it's like,
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: I guess he has on a girdle, maybe?
- 1:54:19Speaker 2: James Garner is really cool. So he can pull his
- 1:54:22Speaker 2: little pants as high as he wants.
- 1:54:23Speaker 1: There was one episode where I swear his pants were
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: like up to here. And so anytime it's on, I'm like,
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: what is the James Garner waist to pant ratio of
- 1:54:32Speaker 1: this episode?
- 1:54:33Speaker 2: I have watched a couple of episodes of Maverick lately.
- 1:54:37Speaker 2: There's one where they went to hang him.
- 1:54:39Speaker 1: Or his pants today. His pants were.
- 1:54:41Speaker 2: Not that high back in the olden days. They were
- 1:54:44Speaker 2: like to here.
- 1:54:45Speaker 6: No, no.
- 1:54:46Speaker 2: He was pretty cool as Maverick, though. Gotta say.
- 1:54:49Speaker 1: The pant to waist ratio is way off. What is this?
- 1:54:51Speaker 1: Is this what we were talking about?
- 1:54:52Speaker 2: This is horror at 37,000 feet. Okay, we'll figure out
- 1:54:57Speaker 2: which one is the right one and we'll watch that.
- 1:55:00Speaker 2: That's our assignment for the next time we get together.
- 1:55:03Speaker 2: Pan Am was still an airline.
- 1:55:05Speaker 1: Yes, that has to be it. It was Pan Am.
- 1:55:07Speaker 1: And I think followed by that was Manitou. I think
- 1:55:10Speaker 1: that was the next movie that came on after that.
- 1:55:12Speaker 2: So that's next after that. We're planning our upcoming episodes.
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: Do you remember Manitou?
- 1:55:17Speaker 2: Again, I know it by title. I feel like I
- 1:55:20Speaker 2: should have seen it, but I don't remember watching it.
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: How do I have such a weird working knowledge of
- 1:55:24Speaker 1: bad 70s B-movies?
- 1:55:25Speaker 2: That seems to be your jam. So let's go with it.
- 1:55:28Speaker 2: Let's feed off of it for upcoming episodes. So. You
- 1:55:32Speaker 2: guys also have your assignment. In between now and then,
- 1:55:35Speaker 2: figure out which one we're talking about.
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: And then I have to write a treatment for our.
- 1:55:39Speaker 2: And, yeah, start a bourbon town or whatever the hell
- 1:55:44Speaker 2: our show and or spinoff horror movie is going to be.
- 1:55:47Speaker 2: So these are all things we need to get done
- 1:55:50Speaker 2: before next we get together.
- 1:55:51Speaker 1: Also, to bring it full circle, I painted my fingernails
- 1:55:54Speaker 1: pumpkin spice.
- 1:55:55Speaker 2: You're such a basic bitch. That's what I keep seeing.
- 1:56:01Speaker 7: Everybody.
- 1:56:02Speaker 2: Everybody that refers to anything pumpkin spice now, they're just like,
- 1:56:05Speaker 2: basically such a bitch.
- 1:56:07Speaker 6: You can watch the entire movie on YouTube.
- 1:56:09Speaker 1: Really?
- 1:56:10Speaker 2: That's a plus.
- 1:56:11Speaker 6: Well, there you go.
- 1:56:12Speaker 1: So what's it called?
- 1:56:12Speaker 2: We can all watch it.
- 1:56:13Speaker 6: Horror at 37,000 feet.
- 1:56:14Speaker 2: Horror at 37,000 feet. All right, there's your assignment. 1973.
- 1:56:18Speaker 2: Somewhere in the near future, we'll be back to discuss
- 1:56:21Speaker 2: that movie and probably some other bad movies. So prepare
- 1:56:24Speaker 2: yourself now.
- 1:56:25Speaker 1: I'll be more awake next time.
- 1:56:27Speaker 5: I doubt that.
- 1:56:28Speaker 2: So is there anything else to pass along? Assuming we
- 1:56:31Speaker 2: don't get back before the 31st, would you like to
- 1:56:33Speaker 2: wish everyone a happy Halloween?
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: Happy Halloween.
- 1:56:36Speaker 2: Enjoy your pumpkin spices, you basic bitches.
- 1:56:39Speaker 7: Yes, queen.
- 1:56:39Speaker 2: Happy whore.
- 1:56:40Speaker 1: Whore. Whore.
- 1:56:41Speaker 7: Happy whore.
- 1:56:42Speaker 2: Happy whores.
- 1:56:43Speaker 1: I said whore, but it came out whore.
- 1:56:47Speaker 2: Whores. Happy whore.
- 1:56:49Speaker 6: Whore.
- 1:56:49Speaker 1: Lazy tongue.
- 1:56:50Speaker 2: Whore.
- 1:56:51Speaker 4: Whore.
- 1:56:51Speaker 1: Whore.
- 1:56:53Speaker 2: Otherwise that about does it we will return next time
- 1:56:56Speaker 2: same geek feed thanks for listening.
- 1:57:00Speaker 11: This monster came.
- 1:57:07Speaker 7: Upon the scene in cinema scope on a wide wide
- 1:57:12Speaker 7: screen He flipped his.
- 1:57:26Speaker 10: Tail and the mountain broke Wiggly.
- 1:57:30Speaker 7: Hoof and he puffed with fire.
- 1:57:31Speaker 11: And smoke.
- 1:57:43Speaker 4: Suddenly there in the dark by heck Well I felt
- 1:57:48Speaker 4: two arms around my neck.
- 1:57:52Speaker 2: At first I shivered and I shook with fright.
- 1:57:56Speaker 7: Then I saw what it was holding me tight. Well,
- 1:57:58Speaker 7: the clinging to me was.
- 1:58:00Speaker 2: A scared female.
- 1:58:05Speaker 7: Swinging this chick with a ponytail.
- 1:58:10Speaker 11: Chick with a ponytail Each.
- 1:58:19Speaker 7: Time she heard the monster roar She closed her eyes
- 1:58:25Speaker 7: and couldn't look more.
- 1:58:28Speaker 2: And when that movie show.
- 1:58:30Speaker 6: Was through, well, I took her home like she wanted
- 1:58:34Speaker 6: me to.
- 1:58:37Speaker 11: We saved our nickels and we saved our dimes.
- 1:58:42Speaker 7: We saw that movie 14 times.
- 1:58:44Speaker 11: We saw that movie 14 times.
- 1:58:48Speaker 7: We saw that movie 14 times.
- 1:58:53Speaker 1: I was there this morning, and yesterday I was there twice.
- 1:58:56Speaker 2: There you go.
- 1:58:57Speaker 1: I have a problem.
- 1:58:58Speaker 2: I think you should go in and scream Code Meltdown
- 1:59:01Speaker 2: every time. I'm sure they'll be like, what are you
- 1:59:05Speaker 2: talking about? But if you go online, it totally works.
- 1:59:08Speaker 1: They're probably like, oh, poor Gina has finally lost it.
- 1:59:12Speaker 2: One too many lattes. It's flipped out her brain.
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: Too much pumpkin spice.
- 1:59:17Speaker 5: This episode is a production of Movie Meltdown, produced and
