- 0:00We're back with Dan Hurley on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show, Mike chris
- 0:03Pino coach. The bench was a huge catalyst last year in that championship run.
- 0:09You know, people got excited when Joey California came off the bench and
- 0:12other guys, and it was it was just a beautiful thing. This year,
- 0:16it's a developing thing. So where are you at right now? Jayden
- 0:20Ross got some time Tuesday, played almost seventeen minutes. Jalen Stewart got in
- 0:25there for almost twelve minutes. Hassandi are at twenty one minutes, Samson Johnson
- 0:30coming up to bench sixteen minutes. Where do you think the bench brigade is
- 0:34at at this point? Yeah, I think it's a work in progress.
- 0:41There's obviously two veterans there that we need to be from somewhere between solid and
- 0:50really good this year with Hassan and Samson, and then you're going to be
- 0:55relying on you know, two or three are going to need two or three
- 1:00of those freshmen, you know, just to to give us some quality minutes
- 1:04to give us you know, twelve to fifteen minutes a game, potentially a
- 1:10little more. So you know, I think it's uh, something that's just
- 1:17going to take some time. It's it's not you know, college basketball has
- 1:22gotten old. There's not many top teams that are playing a lot of freshmen.
- 1:29You know, maybe Duke, maybe Kentucky. You know, we're probably
- 1:34playing a little bit more than most elite teams. It's just it's going to
- 1:37take some time for these guys to learn and develop and and get better.
- 1:42I think the good news is, you know, are starting five is really
- 1:48good. It's obviously these young guys have talent, no question. Jane Ross
- 1:52didn't score the other night. We got four rebounds. Jalen Stewart, I
- 1:57think I had a couple points in the game. What's the leash like for
- 2:01you on those guys? Do you let them make their mistakes here early in
- 2:05the season, hoping that it's all gonna come out in the wash by March?
- 2:09Yeah? Mistake maybe not mistakes? Yeah maybe one plural yeah, no
- 2:17plural. You know you've got to be able to obviously, you know,
- 2:23just maybe trying to help us a little bit, you know, not burious
- 2:27defensively, not burious on the backboard, you know, know what we're doing
- 2:30on offense. Uh, you know, if you get an open shot,
- 2:34step into it, if you have a chance to you know, to do
- 2:37something aggressive, you know, you know, go and attack. It's more
- 2:42so about just trying to avoid, you know, just cut of burying us,
- 2:46you know, just getting driven constantly fouling a lot, getting cut a
- 2:52lot, you know, like the things that just really make it hard for
- 2:58you to win if they're staying the court for a long extended period of time.
- 3:01And these are you know, the same struggles that that Andre Jackson went
- 3:07through, that Adamisonoga went through, Book Night went through Andre Jackson. Right
- 3:13everyone, everyone's gone through these struggles, uh, you know, early in
- 3:19their career, and they're going through it right now. Yeah, even Jordan
- 3:23Hawkins, who, by the way, lighting up pretty good for the Pelicans
- 3:28in New Orleans and the NBA. I know you're obviously huge fan of the
- 3:32of this kid, but I don't think anybody saw like a record number of
- 3:38threes by a rookie in his first eleven games like we're seeing from Jordan Hawkins
- 3:43right now. Yeah. I think I said last year, like there hasn't
- 3:47been a movement shooter like him in college in in uh, you know,
- 3:53since a you know, JJ Raddick. Uh, you know, type of
- 3:59a clay Thompson in terms of shooting on the move and it's still being a
- 4:04beautiful shot in college. Uh, you know, comparisons not comparing Clayton Thompson
- 4:11and Jordans Hawkins as NBA players, but and for for how important shooting is
- 4:18in the NBA and how unique his shooting skill set is. I was surprised
- 4:25during the draft that he probably didn't go eighth, ninth, tenth in that
- 4:29range, especially as he proved himself to be such a unique shooter but then
- 4:33also a champion. But I think we you know, we we value championships
- 4:40and winning more more in the past than we do today. I think today
- 4:47it's about it's about raw numbers, it's about social media clicks, it's about
- 4:55big personalities. Yeah, and I hate that to be to be reality TV
- 5:00and reality and oh I forgot, yeah, I forgot. Now, winning
- 5:05matters. Come on, A guy that helps a team win a championship has
- 5:11got to have some qualities that. I mean, I've never understood that about
- 5:15the NFL or the NBA. They just overlook it. And to me,
- 5:19it's such a it's such a quality that you're looking for, you need it,
- 5:24Yeah, I think, you know, I don't maybe at the professional
- 5:29level, particularly the NBA, I don't know they they look at uh maybe
- 5:33you know, the measurables, the size, the weight, the wingspan,
- 5:39the upside potentially. But I guess that's probably the most confusing part for me,
- 5:46is like when when a front office is eventually going to be judged on
- 5:49whether they win or lose, and not just whether the players were statistically uh
- 5:56successful. Uh, they eventually get fired for not drafting winning. Yeah.
- 6:01And it was funny too, is if you look at the rosters of NBA
- 6:03teams, there's plenty of guys drafted in the second round, you know,
- 6:08fortieth, thirty, fifth, whatever. I mean, guys that come out
- 6:12of schools that you haven't heard of, that are still on winning teams,
- 6:15still in the league, eight nine, ten years in. I don't understand
- 6:20how that happens so often, but it does. They just miss on guys
- 6:24who have the qualities that you're looking for. Yeah, I think both guys,
- 6:29and you know, we were both guys. I think all three were
- 6:32fortunate da Andre and Jordan just to end up, you know with Billy Donovan's
- 6:39a great coach and obviously Adrian Griffin. And there's a former teammate that that
- 6:44Andre plays for, you know, Willie Green, the Pelicans or I think
- 6:47the boys just all ended up in great organizations, and you know that's that's
- 6:54not always the case. Yeah, that matters. I got to tell you,
- 6:57having been around and seeing some organizations that were dysfunctional, you've got to
- 7:00be in a good organization. Dan Hurly with us, we got a little
- 7:04bit more to do on the little Big East basketball in Indiana that's coming up.
- 7:08That's the next opponent. This is the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show on Learfield
