- 0:23Speaker 1: That's Alabama Arrogance, Vanderbilt Trophy Captain. Wow, good morning, we
- 0:36Speaker 1: are the Out of Bound Show ESPN one oh five
- 0:40Speaker 1: nine the Zone and uh let's give away. Let's give
- 0:46Speaker 1: away four four packs of Old Miss and Mississippi State cigars,
- 0:51Speaker 1: brought to you by the Bocock Brothers. You know, they're
- 0:56Speaker 1: great cigars. They're branded Mississippi State and Old Miss. The
- 0:59Speaker 1: BIS is everything of the rapper, the whole thing they're
- 1:04Speaker 1: they're in. They're good premium Honduran cigars. So we'll do
- 1:08Speaker 1: this around. And I know I'm about to talk about
- 1:11Speaker 1: a big time figure outside of the state of Mississippi,
- 1:16Speaker 1: but he was tied in to the state because LSU
- 1:19Speaker 1: played Mississippi State and Old Miss all the time. And
- 1:23Speaker 1: and Skip Burtman, you know, was the architect of UH,
- 1:27Speaker 1: the one and only dynasty in SEC baseball. I guess
- 1:32Speaker 1: Corbin came close in the modern era, or you could
- 1:36Speaker 1: argue did and a much more difficult time. Not taking
- 1:40Speaker 1: anything away from the late great UH Skip Bertman out
- 1:45Speaker 1: of LSU. But we need to give away four four
- 1:48Speaker 1: packs of Bocock Brothers cigars, Old Miss and Mississippi State.
- 1:51Speaker 1: So on the Out of bounds role call, I need
- 1:53Speaker 1: to hear from you. Here's how you enter to win
- 1:56Speaker 1: on the tax line six oh one eight eight five
- 1:59Speaker 1: three seven seven six. I'd like to know how you're
- 2:03Speaker 1: listening either radio one O five to nine the zone
- 2:07Speaker 1: or streaming on the out of bounds radio app or
- 2:11Speaker 1: the Zone one O five to nine dot com. Where
- 2:13Speaker 1: are you listening from? And uh? And then you can
- 2:17Speaker 1: throw in your thoughts on Skip Bartman, your team's football
- 2:23Speaker 1: fall report, or the Jaden Daniels LSU divorce in which
- 2:30Speaker 1: we're also going to cover a little bit later, probably
- 2:33Speaker 1: in the In the segment, Tom Lougan Bill will stop
- 2:37Speaker 1: by at eight thirty today and Nathan McCarty with Briarwood
- 2:40Speaker 1: Wine and Spirits will bring in the Elijah Craig barrel
- 2:42Speaker 1: pick that hit the market over the weekend. We picked
- 2:47Speaker 1: it out several months ago, not the one we just
- 2:49Speaker 1: did a few weeks ago right with Taste Italian Kitchen.
- 2:52Speaker 1: This we did several months ago. It hit the shelves
- 2:55Speaker 1: at Briarwood, Wind and Spirits. So the Elijah Craig barrel
- 2:59Speaker 1: pick is UH is here and we'll taste it in
- 3:02Speaker 1: the third hour and talk about it. It's perfect just
- 3:05Speaker 1: in time for football season. And as you know, cooler
- 3:10Speaker 1: weather not right now, but cooler weather will be here
- 3:12Speaker 1: at some point. Thank you. You know what. But that's
- 3:16Speaker 1: how you enter, and you could win a four pack
- 3:19Speaker 1: of you get to pick well, depending on where you
- 3:22Speaker 1: are in the pecking order on this or Mississippi State
- 3:26Speaker 1: branded Bocock Brother Cigars. We'll throw in an out of
- 3:30Speaker 1: bounds hat and some kind of piece of barswag from
- 3:34Speaker 1: Elijah craig Ertito's all right, so that's the out of
- 3:38Speaker 1: bounds prize pack this morning. We want to hear from
- 3:41Speaker 1: you on the text line six oh one eight eight
- 3:44Speaker 1: five three seven seven six. So great trip to Deston
- 3:49Speaker 1: right before football season, and that was a ton of fun.
- 3:54Speaker 1: I'll continue to talk about that. I've always been in
- 3:59Speaker 1: love with Deston, but even more so now. It's just
- 4:02Speaker 1: fantastic and the people watching and everything else is great.
- 4:06Speaker 1: And I'll be honest, I mean, when you get to
- 4:08Speaker 1: go down just the two of you, that's nice. You
- 4:12Speaker 1: don't have to worry about anything anybody. Sometimes you do
- 4:16Speaker 1: your own thing, you know, but you have to carry
- 4:19Speaker 1: a bunch of stuff to the beach. You don't have
- 4:21Speaker 1: to do this or that, You eat when you want,
- 4:22Speaker 1: you have what you want, and so on. So it
- 4:26Speaker 1: was fabulous and the weather was great too. I hope
- 4:28Speaker 1: you've had a good trip or two or three over
- 4:31Speaker 1: the summer. And now we get ready for high school football,
- 4:33Speaker 1: college football, and the NFL. Now we're going to talk
- 4:37Speaker 1: a little college baseball here for a second. I grew
- 4:40Speaker 1: up on it, so did some of you. I you know,
- 4:42Speaker 1: my first memories are nineteen eighty eighty one Bruce Kastoria,
- 4:46Speaker 1: before skip Bertman had LSU tuned up, Ron Polk had
- 4:50Speaker 1: Mississippi State tuned up. And that's where, you know, in
- 4:54Speaker 1: the seventies the leftfield Lounge or whatever, foul pole to
- 4:57Speaker 1: foul pole was born and Polk got rolling and so on,
- 5:03Speaker 1: and then skip Bertman takes the job at LSU. Of course,
- 5:07Speaker 1: Mike Bianco was skip Bertman's catcher, along with Ben McDonald
- 5:11Speaker 1: being the pitcher on that team or teams. And Mike
- 5:14Speaker 1: Bianco has been in Mississippi at Ole, miss what feels
- 5:17Speaker 1: like fifty years, and we feel like he's going to
- 5:19Speaker 1: outlive us all. And yeah, three generations from now, Mike
- 5:23Speaker 1: Bianco will still be the head baseball coach at Ole
- 5:25Speaker 1: Miss and Elon may be living you know, on Mars,
- 5:30Speaker 1: but Mike will be in Oxford at Swasey coaching baseball.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Former LSU catcher but Bertman was the architect of a dynasty.
- 5:39Speaker 1: He took over LSU baseball in nineteen eighty four and
- 5:42Speaker 1: he turned it into a national powerhouse. And it's the
- 5:46Speaker 1: only dynasty in SEC baseball. He did it through you know,
- 5:51Speaker 1: sheer will and guts and determination, and LSU was not
- 5:57Speaker 1: the LSU of today, the absolute total monster of a
- 6:01Speaker 1: top five athletic department, program and brand and everything that's
- 6:05Speaker 1: happened to them in the last twenty five years since
- 6:07Speaker 1: Sabing set foot on campus and all the great players
- 6:10Speaker 1: that they put in the NFL and well even NBA,
- 6:14Speaker 1: but MLB two and so he was the architect with
- 6:18Speaker 1: national titles in nineteen ninety one, ninety three, ninety six,
- 6:25Speaker 1: ninety seven, In two thousand eleven College World Series appearances,
- 6:34Speaker 1: he was eight hundred and seventy and three thirty yeah,
- 6:41Speaker 1: and a winning percentage in Omaha that's still the best
- 6:43Speaker 1: in NCAA tournament history. He is a legend. He had
- 6:49Speaker 1: no budget nineteen eighty four, eighty six, eighty eight, ninety
- 6:52Speaker 1: ninety two, ninety four. We're gonna drop some of this
- 6:54Speaker 1: audio coming up. It's pretty funny. He had a hell
- 6:58Speaker 1: of a win about him, super smart, believed in self actualization.
- 7:02Speaker 1: He believed that if you visualized it, talked about it,
- 7:05Speaker 1: manifested it, then you got there. He talked about it
- 7:07Speaker 1: all the time. That's all he talked. We're here to
- 7:09Speaker 1: win national championships. We're here to go to Omahall. We're
- 7:13Speaker 1: here to go to Omahall and win games. We are
- 7:16Speaker 1: the out of Bound show ESPN one oh five nine
- 7:19Speaker 1: of the Zone. We're brought to you by Farm Bureau Insurance.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Bundle your auto and home and save with your local
- 7:25Speaker 1: Farm Bureau Insurance agent Auto Home Life powered by Farm
- 7:29Speaker 1: Bureau Insurance any of the eighty two counties in the
- 7:32Speaker 1: state of Mississippi. You can find your local Farm Bureau
- 7:36Speaker 1: Insurance agent. Go with the home team, as Jake Mangham
- 7:39Speaker 1: likes to tell us, so he basically he took He
- 7:46Speaker 1: knew he was a promoter too, okay, and Bertman understood
- 7:51Speaker 1: the marketing side of it and how important it was.
- 7:56Speaker 1: And then he went from dugout to athletic director which
- 8:01Speaker 1: was crazy and really did a good job there. He
- 8:09Speaker 1: was a builder of LSU baseball and along with Saban
- 8:13Speaker 1: on the reboot LSU Athletics in the modern era. Is
- 8:18Speaker 1: that fair? And so when you know jo Deine Senior
- 8:24Speaker 1: made the higher but Bertman literally five minutes later or
- 8:27Speaker 1: something was the flag director and from there they really connected.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Bertman multi you know, national championships, Saban, you know the drill.
- 8:41Speaker 1: And it's too many players to list. For as far
- 8:46Speaker 1: as Major League Baseball, we all know Ben McDonald, Todd Walker,
- 8:51Speaker 1: among many many others, and Jay Johnson is the current coach.
- 8:55Speaker 1: But uh, Bertman is the legend of college baseball. Okay
- 9:01Speaker 1: he is, and he won a ton of championships and
- 9:07Speaker 1: you felt I remember in the eighties watching LSU when
- 9:12Speaker 1: they started to get you know, when they started to
- 9:15Speaker 1: get rolling. But by the nineties you knew who the
- 9:17Speaker 1: who the beast was. When they would come into your
- 9:21Speaker 1: place or you went down to alex Box, you knew
- 9:27Speaker 1: they were on another level. They were trained on another level.
- 9:32Speaker 1: The whole thing and their whole deal was winning championships.
- 9:39Speaker 1: And and Bertman knocked down five of them. Yeah, and
- 9:43Speaker 1: since then, what manary won one and Jay one two.
- 9:47Speaker 1: So post Bertman Manary with one and Jay with two,
- 9:52Speaker 1: that's eight since Bertman took over eight national championships. That's
- 9:58Speaker 1: pretty damn good. We've got some audio for you this morning.
- 10:01Speaker 1: We'd love to hear if you have a Burtman story
- 10:04Speaker 1: or if you'd like to share some thoughts on this,
- 10:07Speaker 1: we'd love to hear from you. Skip. Bertman, legendary LSU
- 10:10Speaker 1: baseball coach passes away. One of the biggest winners in
- 10:14Speaker 1: the history of North American sports, one of the biggest,
- 10:16Speaker 1: which makes him one of the biggest in the SEC
- 10:20Speaker 1: up there with Paul Bear Bryant, Pat Summit, Nick Saban,
- 10:24Speaker 1: you know, among others okay, and and Don Staley and
- 10:28Speaker 1: others that have knocked down a bunch of championships. But
- 10:34Speaker 1: this is Bertman. I will start with Bertman, the legend.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Here we go.
- 10:41Speaker 2: And uh boyd I get yelled at. They can be
- 10:46Speaker 2: pretty nasty.
- 10:47Speaker 1: What would they say? What would they say mean to
- 10:49Speaker 1: a nice guy like you?
- 10:50Speaker 2: Well, one of the things, like I'm walking out well here,
- 10:53Speaker 2: one of the things.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Was you want to name the school?
- 10:55Speaker 2: Well, in this case, I have to. Okay, I go
- 10:58Speaker 2: down two lane and this is a long time ago,
- 11:01Speaker 2: and Barry Manual was pitching, so it had to you know,
- 11:04Speaker 2: nineteen eighty six or eighty seven, and big crowds like
- 11:09Speaker 2: there always are wherever we go. Well, my daughter Lisa
- 11:15Speaker 2: is attending two lane at the time, so it's very
- 11:18Speaker 2: very difficult for her, and a coach at that time,
- 11:22Speaker 2: Joe Brocko was very nice and got some seats for
- 11:24Speaker 2: my wife because they were very hard on some other people,
- 11:26Speaker 2: very hard to get seats. And I'm walking out the
- 11:29Speaker 2: change Manual in the ninth and I come back and
- 11:34Speaker 2: I hear all of these things, you know, Bertram, you idiot,
- 11:37Speaker 2: and all of these things. But what catches my attention
- 11:40Speaker 2: is a big white poster board side and it says
- 11:45Speaker 2: even skips kid doesn't go to LSU. I thought that
- 11:52Speaker 2: was I thought it was pretty good that it's got
- 11:54Speaker 2: to give them that one. The only one I really
- 11:57Speaker 2: I hear a lot is when I walk to them out,
- 11:59Speaker 2: I hear whack quack. Well, I walk like a dunk lee.
- 12:06Speaker 2: I mean, you know, people, people should walk a hell
- 12:10Speaker 2: of a lot better than you used to because you
- 12:11Speaker 2: got new hips. Hey for a guy, uh, some new hips.
- 12:15Speaker 2: I mean a lot of people and for all the
- 12:17Speaker 2: brothers and sisters.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Of the hip out there. No, I tell you what
- 12:30Speaker 3: people ask me all the time. When should I do it?
- 12:32Speaker 3: What should I do?
- 12:33Speaker 2: People got me pu I don't even know.
- 12:35Speaker 3: We call all the time and h since that.
- 12:41Speaker 2: You like that one.
- 12:42Speaker 1: That's good, That's what.
- 12:45Speaker 2: I mean anyway, all right, anyway, you had both hips replaced,
- 12:49Speaker 2: the first oneing around nineteen nineteen ninety one and then
- 12:52Speaker 2: again in nineteen ninety four. It's worked for me and
- 12:55Speaker 2: uh mag about three hundred thousand of those a year,
- 12:58Speaker 2: more knees being done.
- 13:00Speaker 1: All right. So that was skip Bertman talking about his
- 13:03Speaker 1: child going to Tulane and Tulane giving him all unfiltered.
- 13:08Speaker 1: You know what. Uh you know, even skip Burtman's kids
- 13:11Speaker 1: don't go to LSU. It's pretty good. Yeah, he he was.
- 13:16Speaker 1: You know how we get some of the best quirky
- 13:18Speaker 1: personalities in baseball. There's so much downtime that you've got
- 13:22Speaker 1: to be a storyteller. You got to be playing pranks
- 13:25Speaker 1: or jokes or you know. And back then y'all know this,
- 13:28Speaker 1: and again it's overused for me. But in the russ
- 13:32Speaker 1: can rule sec if you remember in the eighties, damn
- 13:36Speaker 1: near walking the dugout in SEC baseball, I mean Bertman
- 13:41Speaker 1: would be there wasn't there were no new stadiums. It
- 13:44Speaker 1: was just a little fence. And Bertman could be out.
- 13:47Speaker 1: I mean it could be it could be Rotten Polk,
- 13:49Speaker 1: it could be Burtman. But Burtman was one to you know,
- 13:52Speaker 1: mix it up with the either his it could be
- 13:56Speaker 1: his fans or the opposing team fans. That was just Bertman.
- 14:01Speaker 1: So I ran into him and start well, and I
- 14:04Speaker 1: don't remember what it's either ninety nine or two thousand,
- 14:08Speaker 1: and he's walking. Bertman was known for walking in whatever
- 14:14Speaker 1: town he was in. He was a walker. Right exercise,
- 14:18Speaker 1: You're there for a couple of days, depending on the split, right.
- 14:22Speaker 1: You know, you used to have Friday doubleheader Saturday and
- 14:25Speaker 1: then and then somehow, you know, they were able to
- 14:27Speaker 1: break it up Friday Saturday Sunday three game series. Many
- 14:31Speaker 1: of y'all remember that that we didn't play three three
- 14:36Speaker 1: days over the weekend, and then they changed the format.
- 14:39Speaker 1: But I run into Bertman, and I know who he is.
- 14:41Speaker 1: And this is at a time believed or not, when
- 14:44Speaker 1: a lot of people don't. I've been y'all know this
- 14:46Speaker 1: I mean, I grew up on Mississippi State baseball and
- 14:50Speaker 1: the he's Wendy and I were finishing grad school and
- 14:56Speaker 1: he's walking through this little neighborhood where we were, where
- 15:00Speaker 1: we lived, and I'm talking to I'm assuming they were
- 15:05Speaker 1: at the holiday in Express because we were a Rocks
- 15:08Speaker 1: throw there on Highway twelfth in Starville, So it's kind
- 15:13Speaker 1: of nestled back and there's a neighborhood behind it. And
- 15:18Speaker 1: I run into him and start talking. He can't believe
- 15:20Speaker 1: that I recognize him. Well, games weren't on TV in
- 15:24Speaker 1: nineteen nine, you know, and again while college baseball was
- 15:28Speaker 1: exploding a little bit, I mean a little bit, it
- 15:31Speaker 1: really didn't explode until a good decade or so later
- 15:35Speaker 1: as far as the stadiums, the investment, and then of
- 15:41Speaker 1: course now the last fives, I don't know how many
- 15:43Speaker 1: years you get every single Mississippi State O MISS game
- 15:47Speaker 1: on the stream, which now we see people's faces more,
- 15:51Speaker 1: you know, the drill, right, And I mean, can you
- 15:54Speaker 1: imagine if Jake Mangham would have played in nineteteen eighty seven,
- 15:57Speaker 1: or what if Raffie and Will would have played today
- 16:01Speaker 1: and you would have watched all fifty six games and
- 16:04Speaker 1: been able to see their face not just have to
- 16:07Speaker 1: go to Smith Wills or start Bull or wherever they
- 16:10Speaker 1: were playing. So that was like a big deal for me.
- 16:14Speaker 1: I thought I'd just met, you know, the second coming
- 16:18Speaker 1: when I saw Bertman. But he was the architect of
- 16:23Speaker 1: one of the greatest dynasties in all of collegiate athletics,
- 16:27Speaker 1: right Bear Bryant, Woody Hayes, Pat Summit, Nick saban Gino
- 16:33Speaker 1: at Yukon Dawn at South Carolina. We could go on
- 16:36Speaker 1: and on, I think Oklahoma and Softball whatever. But Bertman
- 16:41Speaker 1: won five national titles in a short period of time
- 16:45Speaker 1: in the nineties slash with that last one in two thousand, right,
- 16:50Speaker 1: which is incredible, and eleven College World Series appearances. What
- 16:58Speaker 1: you got there, just I needed to see it like
- 17:03Speaker 1: laid out the years that he wanted, yeah, to understand
- 17:06Speaker 1: the shortness of this. So ninety one to two thousand
- 17:09Speaker 1: and he won five and then he went to eleven
- 17:14Speaker 1: College World Series, which is I mean again, now, a
- 17:20Speaker 1: lot of that was the sixteen regionals. You had eight
- 17:24Speaker 1: sixteen regionals. Remember we didn't go to the super Regionals
- 17:27Speaker 1: till ninety nine, So prior to that it was just
- 17:31Speaker 1: eight regionals, six teams, and you played forever, double elimination,
- 17:36Speaker 1: and you played and played and played and played and
- 17:39Speaker 1: played and then played some more. That was just the format.
- 17:43Speaker 1: And then someone I don't even know who it was, decided, Hey,
- 17:46Speaker 1: why don't we go regionals? Pare them down to four
- 17:49Speaker 1: sixteen four fourteen regionals, and then we'll do sixteen supers
- 17:54Speaker 1: and then we'll do Omaha, which has which has been
- 17:57Speaker 1: awesome for college baseball. The super regionals have you on
- 18:02Speaker 1: the edge of your seat every single pitch, which is
- 18:05Speaker 1: a ton of fun for people that are in him
- 18:07Speaker 1: in June, How big of a transition was that? You know,
- 18:13Speaker 1: I didn't he didn't think about it. Well, I knew
- 18:16Speaker 1: I was actually covering Pat McMahon at the time because
- 18:20Speaker 1: he had become the baseball coach. And Pat and I
- 18:22Speaker 1: hit it off, really liked him, really enjoyed covering him,
- 18:28Speaker 1: loved his intensity and fire, and he would have won well,
- 18:34Speaker 1: he was already winning big, but he would have won
- 18:35Speaker 1: big big had he not left Mississippi State to go
- 18:38Speaker 1: to Florida. But he was promised some things that were
- 18:40Speaker 1: not done. And so yeah, we knew it was big,
- 18:47Speaker 1: but also understand Jackson that we weren't able to watch
- 18:52Speaker 1: the Super Regionals live for years, all in streaming. So
- 18:56Speaker 1: even though Mississippi State went to the first one or
- 18:59Speaker 1: the first year super Regionals were there, McMahon drove MSU
- 19:03Speaker 1: he had just gone to the College World Series in
- 19:05Speaker 1: the old format in ninety eight and then he went
- 19:08Speaker 1: to the Super Regionals in ninety nine. In two thousand
- 19:10Speaker 1: and one, before going to Florida, we knew it was different.
- 19:14Speaker 1: I don't know if we knew how cool it was
- 19:16Speaker 1: going to be until streaming became prevalent and the access
- 19:20Speaker 1: all of us have now on our TVs and phones.
- 19:23Speaker 1: So Supers in the beginning, you still had to travel
- 19:25Speaker 1: to go see Oh absolutely, okay, yeah yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 19:28Speaker 1: because I think I think McMahon played in Clemson and
- 19:31Speaker 1: Ohio State or cal State Fullerton, and you didn't get
- 19:35Speaker 1: the channals. No, you're not you're not getting those. You're
- 19:38Speaker 1: not getting that. Dang. Yeah. Do you remember like when
- 19:43Speaker 1: the first super you watched them TV was no. I
- 19:46Speaker 1: remember going to Supers. I guess we started to get
- 19:52Speaker 1: a little bit on TV, and I don't know, two
- 19:55Speaker 1: thousand and five, three, four, five, six, somewhere in there,
- 20:00Speaker 1: but you didn't get what you get today, which is
- 20:02Speaker 1: every single one. I don't know when that started it
- 20:05Speaker 1: all runs together? Who I mean, I need to find
- 20:08Speaker 1: out who this guy was. It reinvented the college baseball postseason. Yeah,
- 20:12Speaker 1: I don't know. Faithful for him? Right, that's a lot
- 20:15Speaker 1: of baseball they were playing, no question, I mean double
- 20:19Speaker 1: elimination everybody in no way. A's as way too much
- 20:24Speaker 1: cycling in and out. Now the four team is still double,
- 20:31Speaker 1: but it's not near the same as having a six team,
- 20:34Speaker 1: no double limb with eight regionals like it was in
- 20:38Speaker 1: the format prior to breaking it up in nineteen ninety nine. See,
- 20:42Speaker 1: we got two different iterations or models right back to back.
- 20:46Speaker 1: Ninety eight was the first BCS national championship where you
- 20:50Speaker 1: actually started to get a real national championship in college football,
- 20:55Speaker 1: and then the next year was the first year of
- 20:58Speaker 1: breaking it out into sixteen regionals four teams, which then
- 21:02Speaker 1: drove you to the Soupers, which then drove you to Omaho.
- 21:04Speaker 1: What were they doing back in the nineties that made
