- 0:02Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett.
- 0:06Speaker 2: All right, well you might have heard on this network,
- 0:09Speaker 2: the one like Up network, my appearance on One World Radio,
- 0:12Speaker 2: which is aired not only on w r H at
- 0:15Speaker 2: Hofst University, but on Bush Radio over in South Africa. Well,
- 0:20Speaker 2: Bush Radio has come to New York. So I'm very
- 0:22Speaker 2: honored to be in Serdo today with Renato, with Lydia
- 0:27Speaker 2: and with Jasmine. Guys, thanks for joining me today, So
- 0:33Speaker 2: tell me what's up. What brings you to New York
- 0:35Speaker 2: this week?
- 0:37Speaker 3: The presidential election that is happening, you know, in the
- 0:43Speaker 3: next couple of days, so which is yet to do
- 0:47Speaker 3: a little bit of coverage on that, plus also doing
- 0:49Speaker 3: some culturally excage and learning about you know, the American
- 0:53Speaker 3: culture and also trying to give some of our South
- 0:56Speaker 3: African culture as well. And yeah, we just learned from
- 0:58Speaker 3: each other.
- 1:01Speaker 4: Yes, definitely.
- 1:02Speaker 5: So that is why we came because like karnat Or
- 1:06Speaker 5: my colleague stated, now, it is an exchange program with
- 1:11Speaker 5: w r HU, so that is basically the show that
- 1:15Speaker 5: Lydia also Andy, So that's technically how we got here
- 1:21Speaker 5: by meeting Andy and Andy arranged all of this, so
- 1:25Speaker 5: we are here to cover the presidential elections Lydia.
- 1:28Speaker 2: How cool is One World Radio? And what's that like hosting?
- 1:31Speaker 6: Oh, it's absolutely amazing.
- 1:33Speaker 4: Andy is some so.
- 1:36Speaker 6: The president is absolutely amazing. It's with Andy, Cody and
- 1:41Speaker 6: Richard as well. Yes, so it's been fun. It's been Wow.
- 1:46Speaker 6: I've been learning a lot from them as well. Yeah,
- 1:49Speaker 6: that's what I can say.
- 1:50Speaker 2: It's an amazing doesn't hit you that you guys are
- 1:52Speaker 2: making a difference with that show. I mean there are
- 1:54Speaker 2: so many wide rides of topics you guys discuss on
- 1:57Speaker 2: that show.
- 1:58Speaker 6: Yeah, we do, hey, and you know, the feedback it
- 2:01Speaker 6: kind of it's stocking because I'm like, Okay, I'm just.
- 2:04Speaker 4: Doing a show.
- 2:04Speaker 6: I don't know that there are people that are listening
- 2:06Speaker 6: and they're like, oh wow, this is happening. This is
- 2:09Speaker 6: really you know, so I'm actually happy about it.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Well, I've had discussion on adaptability and accessible and I
- 2:16Speaker 2: know that's kind of a topic you.
- 2:17Speaker 4: Guys still deal with today.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Right, So being in New.
- 2:21Speaker 2: York and then you're gonna go visit WRHU, but broadcasting
- 2:24Speaker 2: out of South Africa, what's that experience like and are
- 2:27Speaker 2: there any tech challenges being I'd like to say transcontinental
- 2:31Speaker 2: between here in Long Island, any tech challenges or how
- 2:33Speaker 2: does that all work out?
- 2:36Speaker 5: So when it comes to take challenges, that's why it
- 2:38Speaker 5: anat is here to touch on that, because if there's
- 2:41Speaker 5: an issue with broadcasting or we go off A, this
- 2:45Speaker 5: is the guy that needs to sort it out and
- 2:48Speaker 5: make sure that we back on A.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Oh.
- 2:51Speaker 3: So it is a little bit difficult with some with
- 2:54Speaker 3: all technical issues. And that was one of the things
- 2:57Speaker 3: that I've learned coming here is that it's not that
- 3:00Speaker 3: much pig of a difference from what happens yeah, and
- 3:02Speaker 3: what happens back home the same issues. Yeah, you know,
- 3:05Speaker 3: computer gives up on us and we need to run
- 3:08Speaker 3: it ound. So fortunately you have engineer on hand, somebody
- 3:12Speaker 3: that can fix us. Our skills want to go to
- 3:14Speaker 3: a certain limit and then we have to get in
- 3:17Speaker 3: exter the resources that will assist us. But most of
- 3:20Speaker 3: the times, yeah, I know, there's either computer giving up
- 3:22Speaker 3: on us, somebody may be pressing the wrong button, and
- 3:25Speaker 3: us just trying to figure out where is the problem
- 3:27Speaker 3: coming from.
- 3:27Speaker 2: I just want to give a shout of Adrian, the
- 3:29Speaker 2: leader of the pack here with us today bringing you
- 3:32Speaker 2: guys to studio. Now, I understand the studio space might
- 3:35Speaker 2: be a little different than here. Tell us about the
- 3:37Speaker 2: studio space that you guys broadcast.
- 3:40Speaker 5: We actually have a nice studio.
- 3:43Speaker 3: What do you mean, we actually have a nice We
- 3:45Speaker 3: have a really nice studio.
- 3:47Speaker 5: Because I was going on. So we have the production studio,
- 3:51Speaker 5: which is basically the alternative if anything goes around studio,
- 3:57Speaker 5: So that is the studio. And yeah, it is not
- 4:00Speaker 5: such a fan of that studio. She likes the mind
- 4:03Speaker 5: studio because there you can be yourself. You know what
- 4:08Speaker 5: happens in studio, and it's quite easy to adapt in
- 4:11Speaker 5: the mind studio if a problem basically arises.
- 4:16Speaker 3: So yeah, I would say so judging from the spaces
- 4:19Speaker 3: over here in a medical way. Well, in New York,
- 4:23Speaker 3: the studio space is a lot smaller than what we
- 4:25Speaker 3: have at all. So we're all visitting around the same
- 4:28Speaker 3: size disc. Like I mean, I can reach over and
- 4:30Speaker 3: I can grab you. It's back home. We have quite
- 4:33Speaker 3: a big disc, so there is quite a distance between
- 4:36Speaker 3: us and the guests, and the space is massive, like
- 4:39Speaker 3: I think most of the space has been clicking up
- 4:40Speaker 3: by the disk, but that also has all the equipment
- 4:44Speaker 3: that's in there.
- 4:44Speaker 4: So some of the.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Equipment is also in the studio. I see this, the
- 4:49Speaker 3: server rooms, massive server rooms. I walk in there and
- 4:53Speaker 3: I get a headache. I'm like you, I thought I
- 4:54Speaker 3: was technical inclined until I walked into this room and
- 4:57Speaker 3: it's like this is something completely different. But our studio
- 5:01Speaker 3: space is very very nice, and yeah it's very spacious. Yeah,
- 5:05Speaker 3: it's like we can all hold hands.
- 5:07Speaker 4: It's like one big happy family. Definitely.
- 5:10Speaker 5: And also on that we technical engineer of ourselves. We
- 5:14Speaker 5: don't have someone that engineers, so I don't need to
- 5:18Speaker 5: call it an at and say Ranato, my case is
- 5:20Speaker 5: on a can you put us on end? So what
- 5:23Speaker 5: I deal with everything as I go along? Do the
- 5:26Speaker 5: interview tackles? Yeah, because engineer everything once, play music whatever.
- 5:34Speaker 3: It is called screening, running out of the studios to
- 5:37Speaker 3: go outside, learn everything.
- 5:40Speaker 4: So you ends on.
- 5:43Speaker 5: Technically by our studio. And like Renato said about the safety,
- 5:47Speaker 5: like Chaznis, so the studio, like the desk is very
- 5:54Speaker 5: proud speak so there's no someone can reach me. So yeah,
- 6:00Speaker 5: safety first.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Well tell me about how you guys got into radio.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Maybe Adriam can give us one comment today while he's here.
- 6:06Speaker 2: How you guys all got into radio over in South Africa?
- 6:11Speaker 3: So for me, it was interesting because I came in
- 6:15Speaker 3: to join with technical and learn about the technical side
- 6:18Speaker 3: of things. I was assisting producing or one of the
- 6:23Speaker 3: well the Morning Cruise Show or the Morning Show which
- 6:26Speaker 3: is called The Morning Cruise. I had done two segments
- 6:28Speaker 3: on the show where I had to use my voice
- 6:32Speaker 3: for the segments, so I done it pre recorded and
- 6:35Speaker 3: then people were just like, you have a nice voice.
- 6:37Speaker 3: Would you like to do a show? And me, being
- 6:40Speaker 3: all excited, is like, yes, sir, it's gonna be awesome.
- 6:42Speaker 3: I'm want to be, you know, on the big stage.
- 6:44Speaker 3: And then I had a show, well I didn't have
- 6:47Speaker 3: a show, put me on a show and like, look,
- 6:49Speaker 3: so you're gonna do the backshot show, and yeah, the
- 6:52Speaker 3: preparation work was not what I signed up for.
- 6:57Speaker 4: How old are you, by the way, I am twenty
- 6:58Speaker 4: five years old.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Great to see that radio is it's still live in
- 7:02Speaker 2: the generations of the twenties and you know, late teens,
- 7:05Speaker 2: because sometimes there's this idea that I radio is going away.
- 7:08Speaker 4: I on think it's going.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Away because they've got generations of people who want to
- 7:11Speaker 2: continue that.
- 7:11Speaker 6: Right, Yeah, that is so true, you know. So with me,
- 7:15Speaker 6: I've been a going to radio. A friend of mine
- 7:19Speaker 6: was like, you know what, Bush Radio is running an internship.
- 7:22Speaker 6: You should try it out. You got nice voice, like
- 7:24Speaker 6: really I will?
- 7:25Speaker 4: And then I did.
- 7:27Speaker 6: And here I am And I still need to ask
- 7:30Speaker 6: Adrian how why because I butchered that interview. I don't
- 7:34Speaker 6: know what I said during that interview because here I
- 7:37Speaker 6: am now sitting with you.
- 7:38Speaker 2: And Adrian's right here.
- 7:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I thought i'd grab the opportunity. I think I
- 7:43Speaker 4: also need to say thanks to the US Consulate in
- 7:46Speaker 4: Cape Town, because they really made this entire if possible.
- 7:52Speaker 4: So yeah, I'm the old guy in the group. I've
- 7:55Speaker 4: been doing this since nineteen ninety three. I started my
- 7:59Speaker 4: journalism kiddie with Bush Radio. Managed to spend some time
- 8:03Speaker 4: away from the station and enjoyed. But yeah, you were
- 8:07Speaker 4: talking about radio being you know, radio is still an
- 8:10Speaker 4: intimate medium, and what is so important in South Africa
- 8:13Speaker 4: is that it speaks to people's souls. People have access
- 8:16Speaker 4: to it. You know, we've got a lot of challenges
- 8:19Speaker 4: back home power, et cetera. And the radio is your friends,
- 8:22Speaker 4: so it's still that intimate medium. It's still you know,
- 8:25Speaker 4: we encourage people to talk to one person that sort
- 8:30Speaker 4: of thing is incredibly important for it. You know, the
- 8:34Speaker 4: team we have here, they were selected there to go
- 8:37Speaker 4: through a process all of that. Brend and myself put
- 8:40Speaker 4: them through quite a regulous and stressful process. But they
- 8:45Speaker 4: all represent what is possible with a station like Bush,
- 8:49Speaker 4: and I think a station like Bush represents hope. It
- 8:54Speaker 4: represents what's possible. It's one of the reasons we do
- 8:58Speaker 4: the show with Andy and One or the radio. You know,
- 9:01Speaker 4: it's bringing people together and bringing building bridges between communities,
- 9:06Speaker 4: and this is merely an extension of that as well.
- 9:09Speaker 4: You know, these guys are seeing seeing New York, experiencing
- 9:12Speaker 4: New York, you know, the food, the prices, getting used
- 9:16Speaker 4: to general sales tax and remembering to add that, remembering
- 9:20Speaker 4: wherever you go the bank charges are different, and taxes
- 9:24Speaker 4: are different, all of those that's all mind blowing for us.
- 9:27Speaker 4: So for me, I've been doing a lot of go out,
- 9:30Speaker 4: speak to that person, stop them on this huge right
- 9:33Speaker 4: and New Yorkers. Firstly, I mean I feel so at home.
- 9:39Speaker 4: I mean I've I've been lucky with Pusherdia to travel
- 9:42Speaker 4: to several countries all over the world. My first time
- 9:45Speaker 4: in the US, I think I may have found home.
- 9:50Speaker 4: I can understand why there's so many ex Bush people.
- 9:54Speaker 4: Yeare in New York. We've got somebody at the un Communications,
- 9:57Speaker 4: We've got somebody at the World Bank. This so many
- 10:00Speaker 4: Bush Radio people that live here, Now, that's fact, toys.
- 10:04Speaker 2: So I got to ask this though. To bring the
- 10:06Speaker 2: news to Cape Town and to South Africa must mean
- 10:10Speaker 2: something to all of you, right, I mean, are you
- 10:12Speaker 2: one of the only stations out there?
- 10:14Speaker 4: No, We've got seventy five community radio stations nationally, more
- 10:18Speaker 4: than seventy five. That's great, But I think stations like
- 10:23Speaker 4: Bush and I don't want to speak. You know, we've
- 10:26Speaker 4: been going on this old joke about not tooting our own.
- 10:28Speaker 1: All right, come on, but that's why you're here Bush
- 10:32Speaker 1: Radio in twenty twenty four, it remains one of the
- 10:39Speaker 1: last stations that doesn't serve a political master, doesn't serve
- 10:44Speaker 1: a religious master, and doesn't serve as a commercial master.
- 10:49Speaker 4: So yeah, the last true independent voice, independent media voice
- 10:56Speaker 4: in South Africa.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Well, I'm so honed that you guys join me and
- 10:58Speaker 2: the jazz me. How do you get into this whole
- 11:00Speaker 2: medium that we love called radio?
- 11:03Speaker 5: Okay, So firstly, I'm gonna correct you on my name
- 11:05Speaker 5: because I'm very fussy about my name is jas nine
- 11:07Speaker 5: with the inn and not the M. So for me,
- 11:11Speaker 5: it was when I was small, I always wanted to
- 11:14Speaker 5: be on TV, and as I grew up, I felt
- 11:17Speaker 5: like it's too or to maintain because it takes too
- 11:20Speaker 5: much effort because you're in front of a screen a
- 11:23Speaker 5: camera all day, so that's not gonna work. And that's
- 11:27Speaker 5: how I eventually got into radio when I did a
- 11:32Speaker 5: learnership program and from the because through that learnership, I
- 11:36Speaker 5: ended up at Push Radio, where I'm still at. And
- 11:40Speaker 5: I always felt like I wanted to make a difference
- 11:42Speaker 5: in our community because I come from a high risk gangsterism,
- 11:47Speaker 5: social ills infected community. So through what I'm doing, I'm
- 11:53Speaker 5: able to reach at least one person and change their lives.
- 11:57Speaker 5: So that is a feel good for me, showing me
- 12:02Speaker 5: that I'm actually making a difference in my own community
- 12:05Speaker 5: and inspiring the Nicks, Young Jazz nine arising.
- 12:09Speaker 4: I love that.
- 12:10Speaker 2: All right. Finally you're here to cover the election, so
- 12:13Speaker 2: I gotta say for those who want a different take
- 12:15Speaker 2: on the election, to choose, but radio, how are you
- 12:18Speaker 2: guys going to report? And what time can we listen
- 12:20Speaker 2: to your report on our elections tomorrow night.
- 12:24Speaker 5: Okay, So currently we are putting as we go along,
- 12:28Speaker 5: we are doing using social media as a platform and
- 12:34Speaker 5: putting the content and what we've done so far, we
- 12:39Speaker 5: basically put it on there so people can go via there.
- 12:42Speaker 5: Alternatively live reports.
- 12:46Speaker 3: We will be filing our live reports at midnight, hopefully
- 12:51Speaker 3: getting it the early morning on outside so that people
- 12:54Speaker 3: can actually have a listen and stay in touch and
- 12:56Speaker 3: also hopefully be part of the crazies that we don't.
- 12:59Speaker 4: Feel a love.
- 13:00Speaker 5: So I think the best way is to go via
- 13:02Speaker 5: Push Radio's website which is www dot push radio, dot co,
- 13:06Speaker 5: dot zra. All the information will be there because there's
- 13:09Speaker 5: a type difference, that is the best method to use
- 13:13Speaker 5: to get all the information. Yeah, because it's going to
- 13:17Speaker 5: be later in South Africa, so technically it's old news
- 13:22Speaker 5: in South Africa. On'sn't come there, but for them it
- 13:25Speaker 5: will feel like frees new news. So that is where
- 13:28Speaker 5: the platform that they can use to get all that
- 13:30Speaker 5: information from.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Very cool. Yeah, I think we're all tired of our media.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Well I don't hear how bush Town, but Cape Town
- 13:37Speaker 2: is reporting our election. I'd love to get that take,
- 13:39Speaker 2: so maybe I'll turn in tomorrow MINNTE. How about that?
- 13:43Speaker 4: Please do all right?
- 13:44Speaker 2: Thanks guys for joining the one leg Up Network. I'm
- 13:46Speaker 2: Alex Herrett with the team from Bush Radio from Cape Town,
- 13:50Speaker 2: South Africa.
