Latest / Patriots Unfiltered / Training Camp-Cast 8/10: Joint Practice Prep, Doubs Shows Improvement, O-Line Competition
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The Patriots are back on the practice fields after two
- 0:02Speaker 1: days off, they get ready for joint practices with the
- 0:04Speaker 1: Indianapolis Colts. Let's break it down.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Welcome everybody to the Patriots Training Camp cast presented by
- 0:18Speaker 2: New Balance. And yes, we had a weekend off, we
- 0:20Speaker 2: were back on the field today. Intensity dialed down a
- 0:23Speaker 2: little bit after a bunch of padded practices in a row.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Paul would say, this was, as you said, walking off
- 0:27Speaker 2: the field, maybe putting things in place to have a
- 0:29Speaker 2: good practice tomorrow against the Indianapolis.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what it looked like to me, was some
- 0:32Speaker 3: prep work for what they're going to see with the Colts.
- 0:34Speaker 3: That looked like the first offense and defense were working
- 0:37Speaker 3: separately against you know, some of the backup players. My
- 0:40Speaker 3: inference there would be that they were probably running against
- 0:43Speaker 3: Colts stuff on both sides. I thought the tempo was
- 0:46Speaker 3: a little slower as well, even when they did you know,
- 0:48Speaker 3: ones against ones. Later on, a lot of red zone
- 0:51Speaker 3: work with that, some two minute stuff, some situational work.
- 0:55Speaker 3: So all in all, you know, kind of uneventful, but
- 0:58Speaker 3: you know, you got to have the you got across
- 1:00Speaker 3: these days off. It's coming together.
- 1:02Speaker 4: Yeah, I would say, most of practice was at best
- 1:04Speaker 4: three quarter speed, like they weren't going full speed, but
- 1:07Speaker 4: first scout team type of stuff. As Paul said, I
- 1:10Speaker 4: thought of really training camp and not only the practice tomorrow,
- 1:13Speaker 4: but a lot of these guys are obviously going to
- 1:15Speaker 4: play on Thursday night in the preseason opener too, so
- 1:18Speaker 4: you don't want them going and completely cold without knowing
- 1:20Speaker 4: at all what the Colts are going to run and
- 1:22Speaker 4: what they're going to do. So not a full game
- 1:25Speaker 4: prep like you will see in the regular season, but
- 1:27Speaker 4: they at least get a little bit of taste of
- 1:29Speaker 4: what Indianapolis is going to bring here tomorrow, so you know,
- 1:32Speaker 4: a couple of highlights. Carlton Davis being back was exciting.
- 1:35Speaker 4: It was good to see that, but for the most part,
- 1:37Speaker 4: it was more about participation attendance than what actually happened.
- 1:40Speaker 3: I was a little surprised to see Davis based on
- 1:42Speaker 3: what Mike Grabil said on Friday about not seeing him
- 1:45Speaker 3: till the end of next week. Maybe he meant more
- 1:47Speaker 3: in terms of, you know, the full full Carlton Davis
- 1:50Speaker 3: because he did little more than positional stuff today. Yeah.
- 1:53Speaker 1: No, Christian Barmore as well, that's the second practice, he's missed.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Charles Woods wasn't out there Kendo wldor taking his snap.
- 2:00Speaker 1: I thought he had a couple nice plays there down
- 2:02Speaker 1: in the red zone. Also thought of Eli Reraredan gets
- 2:05Speaker 1: some chances. The two tight ends set down to the
- 2:07Speaker 1: reds out end were caught, some caught some passes there
- 2:09Speaker 1: from Drake. But again a lot of rotation going on
- 2:12Speaker 1: with these guys, so it's hard to like, you know,
- 2:14Speaker 1: really discern who's rising, who's falling, all that kind of stuff.
- 2:17Speaker 1: But it is obvious who's getting the chances With Drake Man,
- 2:19Speaker 1: I think that's what's you know, most important. But Eli Reridan,
- 2:22Speaker 1: and we got to mention too, of course Hunter Henry
- 2:24Speaker 1: signing a two year extension today reportedly, So rare it
- 2:27Speaker 1: In now in the mix. Maybe I think we'll probably
- 2:29Speaker 1: see a lot of him over the next couple of days,
- 2:31Speaker 1: you know, tomorrow, and then into the preseason.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I think it is. You know, we
- 2:35Speaker 3: keep talking about the cliche of you know, rere it
- 2:38Speaker 3: In is more of a pass catcher, you know, Arkin
- 2:41Speaker 3: is more of the blockers. So you're starting to see
- 2:43Speaker 3: now when it's two tight end looks and it's rared
- 2:45Speaker 3: In and Henry. It's probably spread, you know, maybe some
- 2:49Speaker 3: some some passing going on when Arkin's out. There are
- 2:51Speaker 3: a lot of first downs that we've seen in these
- 2:53Speaker 3: team periods have featured Tan or Arkin. Obviously you're looking
- 2:57Speaker 3: more to the run game, so probably looking to get
- 3:00Speaker 3: some of those trends bucked a little bit, figure out
- 3:02Speaker 3: some ways around it. But yeah, I think reard In
- 3:05Speaker 3: has made some slow but steady progress, if that's fair.
- 3:08Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I would say the same thing about Romeo Dobbs.
- 3:10Speaker 4: There's a little baby steps each day. It's not, you know,
- 3:14Speaker 4: Gangbusters quite yet, but I think that he's getting a
- 3:16Speaker 4: little bit better and better each day. And I see
- 3:19Speaker 4: Drake May figuring him out a little bit more. You know,
- 3:21Speaker 4: he's more of a strong at the catch point, go
- 3:24Speaker 4: get the ball, put it on him type of player
- 3:27Speaker 4: than what they had was Tefon Diggs, who is more
- 3:29Speaker 4: of a route runner and separator. So just a little
- 3:31Speaker 4: bit of a transition there in that zerole. But I
- 3:34Speaker 4: see every day Dobbs kind of getting a little bit
- 3:36Speaker 4: more and more comfortable. I thought he had to highlight
- 3:39Speaker 4: a practice at the end over Christian Gonzalez in the
- 3:41Speaker 4: back of the end zone. That was a really nice catch,
- 3:44Speaker 4: maybe his best play at camp to date. And I
- 3:46Speaker 4: thought that he got behind Kendallvilledor, but the ball was
- 3:48Speaker 4: thrown a little bit inside. If that I had been
- 3:50Speaker 4: on his outside shoulder, I think that might have been
- 3:52Speaker 4: a deep ball too. So a little bit of flash
- 3:54Speaker 4: from Romeo Dobbs. I know I've been small sea concerned
- 3:57Speaker 4: about it, but I'm getting you know, it was like
- 3:59Speaker 4: twelve size pomp. Maybe now it's like ten. You know,
- 4:02Speaker 4: you get a little bit smaller each day, which is
- 4:03Speaker 4: what you want to say.
- 4:04Speaker 1: It helps when you make a catch over Christian Gonzalez,
- 4:06Speaker 1: but again, you know, just showing up. And it's a
- 4:07Speaker 1: good sign Paul too, because he missed a couple of days.
- 4:09Speaker 1: We don't know exactly what Michael Vverbel said. It was
- 4:11Speaker 1: a good thing, personal thing that he was not out there.
- 4:13Speaker 1: A little worried briefly that he was maybe hurt, but
- 4:16Speaker 1: seemed like he picked right back up and is building
- 4:17Speaker 1: some momentum.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Yeah, and I would agree with Evan's assessment. I thought
- 4:20Speaker 3: he was he was open at times and then he
- 4:22Speaker 3: made plays that you show that that kind of physicality
- 4:25Speaker 3: that he has at the catch point and the one
- 4:28Speaker 3: in the end zone. I was not quite as impressed,
- 4:31Speaker 3: but almost so with a little two minute work, very
- 4:34Speaker 3: end of practice, catches a little sideline route on you know,
- 4:37Speaker 3: back shoulder kind of a route with with Gonzalez again,
- 4:40Speaker 3: you know, tightly in coverage. You know, Christian's been pretty
- 4:44Speaker 3: physical in his coverage. That's doobs his game. He's able
- 4:46Speaker 3: to sort of show his strong hands on those soul
- 4:49Speaker 3: I would agree I arrow up on Dobbs.
- 4:51Speaker 1: I know it wasn't full speed too, but it seemed
- 4:52Speaker 1: like they were getting a j brown away from Gonzales
- 4:54Speaker 1: a little bit today and he was having on maybe
- 4:56Speaker 1: a little bit more success, especially you know on the
- 4:59Speaker 1: crossers and stuff. But he continues to show up overall.
- 5:02Speaker 1: I think we're watching for, you know, is Barmore probably
- 5:04Speaker 1: not going to be back out there tomorrow. Will Campbell
- 5:06Speaker 1: was back out there today, so that's a good sign
- 5:08Speaker 1: for his participation tomorrow. I'll just say right now, you know,
- 5:11Speaker 1: him and Lomu two pieces I'm really excited to see tomorrow.
- 5:14Speaker 1: You know, not just the one on one stuff, but
- 5:16Speaker 1: the team stuff as well. How do they hold up
- 5:18Speaker 1: against you know, real NFL competition.
- 5:20Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that Lomu right now is in a
- 5:23Speaker 4: little bit of a competition with Marcus Bryant.
- 5:25Speaker 3: I really do.
- 5:25Speaker 4: And I know that people are going to say, oh,
- 5:27Speaker 4: he's a first round pick versus a seventh round pick,
- 5:29Speaker 4: it shouldn't be a competition, but that's where we're at
- 5:32Speaker 4: and Marcus Bryant today, it's kind of a left tackle
- 5:34Speaker 4: day for Caleb Lomu. So Marcus Bryant taking a lot
- 5:37Speaker 4: of those Morgan Moses snaps at right tackle, and Moses was,
- 5:41Speaker 4: you know, load managing or whatever we want to call it.
- 5:43Speaker 3: So we'll see.
- 5:44Speaker 4: I thought in one on ones Lomu looked a lot better.
- 5:46Speaker 4: He's three and oh today, but he was at left,
- 5:48Speaker 4: which we know he's comfortable at left. So the question
- 5:51Speaker 4: is is, you know, how does his development on the
- 5:53Speaker 4: right side catch up to where he's at on the
- 5:55Speaker 4: left side. But Marcus Bryant continues to be in the
- 5:59Speaker 4: mix for that swing tackle job, so it'll be interesting
- 6:02Speaker 4: to see how that plays out.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, Well that's going to do it for
- 6:05Speaker 1: this Monday, Big Day Tomorrow, joint practice against the Indianapolis Colts.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Gates open at nine pint fifteen. Here we'll be live
- 6:10Speaker 1: on the radio nine forty five to take you into
- 6:12Speaker 1: that practice. If you're not able to make it down here,
- 6:15Speaker 1: but if you are, get your butt down here. It's
- 6:17Speaker 1: a great take going U against the Indiapolis Colts. The
- 6:19Speaker 1: players are excited finally hit somebody else.
