- 0:00Hey y'all it's friendly. Happy Friday.
- 0:03We have made it to the end of the week and I hope y'all are
- 0:07all doing amazing. I do want to say I know there's
- 0:10a winter storm coming through parts of the South, I'm in Texas
- 0:13so I hope that y'all stay safe and stay warm and soak up just
- 0:18being inside this weekend. But today I'm going to be
- 0:22walking through the passage of of Matthew chapter 19, verses 16
- 0:28through 30. This is the story of the rich
- 0:31young man, or you might have heard it, rich young ruler.
- 0:34And it's one that really presses on the heart.
- 0:37But it's one of those stories that I think is a great
- 0:40invitation for us to slow down. And I really want y'all to ask
- 0:44the Lord before I go into reading it, Lord, is there
- 0:48anything in my life that I'm holding tighter than you and ask
- 0:52Him to reveal it to you as you're listening?
- 0:55So I'm not going to read the entire passage for the sake of
- 0:58time like yesterday, but I am going to read some key verses
- 1:02that I want y'all to hear and then paraphrase the heart of the
- 1:06story. So verse 16 it starts just then
- 1:11a man came up to Jesus and asked teacher, what good thing must I
- 1:16do to get eternal life? Why do you ask me about what is
- 1:20good? Jesus replied, there is only one
- 1:23who is good. If you want to enter life, keep
- 1:26the commandments. Which ones he asked and Jesus
- 1:30replies with six out of the 10 commandment, 10 commandments.
- 1:34And The thing is that Jesus when he asked this, he already knows
- 1:38this man has kept these commandments.
- 1:41So then this young man, he goes, what do I still lack because
- 1:45I've he's kept all of these and Jesus answers, if you want to be
- 1:49perfect, go sell your possessions and give to the poor
- 1:54and you will have treasure in heaven.
- 1:55Then come follow me. And the young man, he walks away
- 1:59sad because he's not willing to give up his money and his
- 2:02wealth. So Jesus turns to his disciples
- 2:06and he says, truly, I tell you, it is hard for someone who is
- 2:10rich to enter the Kingdom of heaven.
- 2:12And his disciples are shocked because they are like, well then
- 2:17who can be saved? They've elevated the wealthy.
- 2:20And Jesus looks at them and says with man this is impossible, but
- 2:25with God all things are possible.
- 2:28So I want to skip down to the final verse, verse 30.
- 2:32Jesus says, but many who are first will be last, and many who
- 2:37are last will be first. So my takeaways, what really
- 2:43stands out to me is I think it's interesting because Jesus does
- 2:47not immediately challenge what the man loved most.
- 2:50And obviously Jesus knows what he loves most, but he lists
- 2:55these commandments that while they're still important, they
- 2:58didn't actually touch the deepest place in this man's
- 3:01heart. So when Jesus tells him to sell
- 3:03all he has, he is shining a direct light on what the man's
- 3:08weakness is. And The thing is, money was not
- 3:12just something that this young man owned.
- 3:15Money owned him. It had become his idol and his
- 3:20little G God. That's what I like to call
- 3:24anything that is not God, it's a little G God.
- 3:26And so Jesus was not saying that the man could earn salvation by
- 3:30selling everything. When he uses the word perfect,
- 3:35he's not talking about our idea of perfection.
- 3:38He's talking about being complete, justified, and whole
- 3:43in the Kingdom of heaven. So this man was ultimately
- 3:48violating the greatest commandment that Jesus gave us
- 3:51in Matthew 2237. This is to love the Lord your
- 3:55God with all of your heart, all of your soul, and all of your
- 3:59mind, and even violating the commandment in Exodus 23 that
- 4:04says you shall have no other gods before me.
- 4:08So it's important to say this clearly that Jesus is not
- 4:11necessarily calling every believer to go get rid of
- 4:16everything and just be irresponsible.
- 4:19Obviously, practically, we have to survive.
- 4:22We have families that need to be cared for, but God is calling us
- 4:27to steward what he gives us rightly and wisely.
- 4:31And parables and stories that Jesus is using, they're not
- 4:34meant to be taken quite literally, but they are meant to
- 4:38be taken seriously. So I believe that this is a call
- 4:42to obedience. We are taught to sacrifice
- 4:45whatever God asks us to sacrifice.
- 4:49If you think back to the story of Abraham, God asked him to
- 4:53place Isaac, his promised son that he had prayed for.
- 4:57He asked to place Isaac on the altar.
- 5:01And Abraham, he is a man of faith, as Scripture tells us,
- 5:05and it was credited to him as righteousness because God had
- 5:09every single part of his heart, Abraham, he was willing to do
- 5:13this. And later he was greatly
- 5:15rewarded. And this rich young man's faith,
- 5:20The thing is, it was built on what he had done, but Jesus was
- 5:24calling him to an entirely new foundation of his belief,
- 5:29humility, surrender, and a full dependence on God.
- 5:34So I just want to say that anything that we give up in this
- 5:38life with an open heart, it will be repaid a hundredfold in
- 5:43eternity. We honestly cannot even fathom
- 5:47the blessings that God has prepared for those who love Him
- 5:51and fear Him on this side of eternity with our full hearts so
- 5:55loving God entirely. This means using our money and
- 6:00our entire lives in honorable ways.
- 6:03So I want to give y'all a heart check that I had to ask myself
- 6:07personally, how do I spend my money and just reflect on this?
- 6:13But yes, we have practical needs and God wants us to be provided
- 6:18for. He is our provider.
- 6:20He wants us to enjoy life. It's so clear in scripture.
- 6:24But I had to ask myself, OK, am I spending more on my own
- 6:29pleasures than investing in the Kingdom?
- 6:32So for me, I know there have been times where I've spent
- 6:36money on unnecessary shopping that I really did not need, when
- 6:41maybe I could have been giving it to a ministry or giving money
- 6:45to support somebody go out, going out to another country in
- 6:49missions or maybe even buying a meal for a homeless person on
- 6:53the street. So I just want to ask you all,
- 6:55what are ways that you could give back more?
- 6:59And in the story the disciples, they're shocked by this teaching
- 7:03because in their culture wealth was praised, the rich were
- 7:08elevated and everything revolved around what people had.
- 7:13Y'all does this sound familiar? I I think it might but when
- 7:17Jesus says with man this is impossible, but with God all
- 7:21things are possible. This is a common phrase that we
- 7:24might hear or common verse. But he's reminding us that God
- 7:29can save anyone. No one is too far gone.
- 7:33Salvation comes by faith. It doesn't come from our riches,
- 7:38from our rituals or works. It is plain and simple by faith.
- 7:43And this connects actually very closely to what we talked about
- 7:48yesterday about forgiving without limits and the verse
- 7:52that says whoever is forgiven little loves little.
- 7:55Because I believe once you truly understand and realize how much
- 7:59God has sacrificed for you, you can't help but be willing to
- 8:03sacrifice. You're all for Him.
- 8:06He gave up his one and only son. He asked Abraham to do this, but
- 8:11God actually gave up his one and only son.
- 8:14And y'all, Jesus is our living hope.
- 8:17We would not have hope right now without him.
- 8:20It is God's breath breathed into our lungs.
- 8:24We would not be where we are or have a life to come in eternity
- 8:28if it were not for Jesus. And our lives are the greatest
- 8:32sacrifice that we can even bring to His altar, our ultimate
- 8:36reward. It's not wealth, it's not
- 8:38comfort. It's God with us, Emmanuel.
- 8:42It's his presence, his spirit that he is gifted us and his
- 8:47power within us. So yes, Scripture tells us there
- 8:52are heavenly rewards for faithful, obedient service and
- 8:56justice here on this earth right now.
- 8:59But consider that earthly reward.
- 9:03It's not always promised, because if it was, this might
- 9:09lead us or tempt us to do things from wrong motives or for wrong
- 9:13reasons. So I just don't want us to trade
- 9:17eternal, lasting rewards for temporary earthly ones.
- 9:22Guys, let this be a reminder for me and for y'all.
- 9:25Live for what matters. Sacrifice now for the gifts to
- 9:29come. You may experience rejection
- 9:32from friends, from family, but it's for glory later.
- 9:38And obedience, I assure you, will not fail to be rewarded.
- 9:42God wants our whole hearts. So a closing challenge before I
- 9:48head into prayer is just two questions to sit with.
- 9:52Don't rush through them, but consider them honestly.
- 9:56One, is there anything in my life that I would not be willing
- 9:59to give up if God asked me to right now?
- 10:03And I know this passage is about money, but not just money.
- 10:07Think about a job, a relationship, my own comfort, my
- 10:12time, or my plans. And 2:00 AM I living for
- 10:17temporary rewards here on earth or eternal rewards in heaven?
- 10:23Am I investing more in my own comfort, or am I investing more
- 10:26in the Kingdom of God? So let those questions just sink
- 10:30in as we pray. Dear Lord, thank you so much for
- 10:38loving us 1st and forgiving everything You had so that we
- 10:43could truly live. Would you examine our hearts,
- 10:46God, and reveal and bring to light anything that we're
- 10:51holding on to more tightly than You?
- 10:55Lord, we do not want to cling to anything more than we cling to
- 10:58You. Would you form us in a willing
- 11:02and obedient spirit? God, lead us into a deeper
- 11:07surrender. Would You help us to rest in
- 11:10confidence that Your ways are good, Your plans are perfect?
- 11:17Father God, fix our eyes on eternity.
- 11:20Would You give us the courage and the boldness to follow you
- 11:25100% no matter the cost or the sacrifice right now?
- 11:30Lord, we desire you more than anything that this world has to
- 11:34offer. We praise you, we honour you, we
- 11:39give you this day, We ask this all in your name, Jesus.
- 11:42Amen. OK, well that is today's
- 11:46episode. Hope you all enjoy it and that
- 11:48the Lord tends to your heart personally and I will see you on
- 11:52the next one.
