- 4:29[SPEAKER_00]: So welcome to another awesome episode of Inside the Vault with Ash Cash, the greatest money mindset show on the planet.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_00]: Some people know today's guests because of the headlines.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_00]: Others know him because he helped create the headlines, but long before social media turned controversy into currency, today's guest understood the power of attention, branding, and building platforms that change hip-hop culture forever.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_00]: He co-founded one of the most influential hip-hop magazines in history, helped shape careers, built businesses across media and entertainment, survived public feuds that the entire world watched and somehow continues to
- 5:10[SPEAKER_00]: reinvent himself through it all.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_00]: Today, we're talking about the business behind the brand, the cost of fame, ownership, media power, family, mistakes, redemption, and what really happens when your personal life becomes public property, if you ever wonder whether controversy can build a business or destroy one, this is the episode four.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_00]: You, ladies and gentlemen, we have the legend in the bill there.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_00]: Mr. Benzino, what's up brother?
- 5:38[SPEAKER_00]: That was by far the best and most truest intro I've ever experienced.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_00]: So I appreciate you.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_01]: No, congratulations, man.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_00]: No, I appreciate you, man.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you, like you are legendary for real though.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I'm saying like you're a legend for real because like I'm you know, I grew up You know I grew up in the source, right?
- 5:59[SPEAKER_00]: I grew up in the source.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_00]: I grew up Made man like I like like I was like I was a kid here.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_00]: I'm saying like like watching hip hop history unfold
- 6:10[SPEAKER_00]: you know, understanding like what you've done for the culture I think it I mean and I and you know I think it's unfortunate that we have now We now live in an intention kind of world if you will and a lot of the legendary things people have done And now being buried under you know controversy and things only if they let them only if they let them that's the fact as a fact
- 6:35[SPEAKER_00]: But for those who don't know, man, like who is Raymond Scott with us?
- 6:38[SPEAKER_01]: Ben, Ben, you know, Raymond Scott, so, you know, I'm from Boston, Roxbury, Dorchester area to hood, you know, grew up in the streets, I'm saying my dad was heavy in the streets, so he kind of introduced me to that life at the early age.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, um, pretty much, you know, he was born in New York on my family on his sides out of New York.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_01]: Bronx and Brooklyn.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_01]: So I would be shipped back and forth and that's I got to experience hip hop at an early age in New York and the Bronx and my grandfather's house and my uncle and you know from there just kind of
- 7:12[SPEAKER_01]: balance out there in the streets in hustle and yeah and doing hip hop that was my life for a long time and the other side when it comes of course when it comes to the streets you know you you always involve what you know catching cases shoot outs and you know I'm saying overdoses everything that comes with selling drugs and the hood and that's pretty much that was my life you know for the first
- 7:35[SPEAKER_01]: early period of my life.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_01]: It was hip hop and pretty much selling drugs.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_00]: That was what I did.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_00]: What came first?
- 7:44[SPEAKER_00]: I think I think wrapping came first like the hip hop part of it.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know what?
- 7:48[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_01]: It's a great question.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_01]: So, 11 years old, I was in my grandfather's basement.
- 7:52[SPEAKER_01]: My uncle taught me how to cut on two turntables.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_01]: I was like a 76, 77.
- 7:56[SPEAKER_01]: And I fell on
- 8:02[SPEAKER_01]: My dad, unfortunately, was, you know, did a couple of Fedbids and like I said, he was, you know, pretty heavy up there in Boston, he dealt with a lot of the Italian mob up there.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_01]: Some real big Irish guys, just a lot of people with my father, yeah.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_01]: Boston is not that big when it comes as far as the underground, the criminal world.
- 8:21[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, he kind of introduced me.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_01]: to hustling at the early age and not to knock him, but that's what everybody around where I came from, grew up in Academy Home's projects.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_01]: Move to four corners.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_01]: These are two like poverty, dangerous drug areas.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, man, you know, I would have been introduced to it anyways.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_01]: So my father, you know, my father taught me a lot how to be a man, but also how to survive in the streets and how to hustle, you know, and not, you know, I'm grateful for that, because when I look back, that's that, and I'm sure God, you know, is what kept me alive.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_01]: You know, because I've been through a lot, but, um, met Dave Mays, you know, he was going to harvest it.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_01]: We formed bond of a friendship, you know, and the rest was history, man.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_01]: In 1988, the source was found, and I had a group called the Arrasso, which turned into the made man.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_01]: I produced what a team called the Hangman 3, and, you know, in a nutshell, that was that's when I would say,
- 9:35[SPEAKER_01]: source was found at 88.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_01]: I probably left the streets alone in 98.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_01]: Because even still, source wasn't making a lot of money at first.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I'm saying?
- 9:45[SPEAKER_01]: So I still was kind of, you know, I had one foot in one foot out of touch it.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, you know, I, you know, I,
- 9:52[SPEAKER_00]: Even at the height of it though, because like I'm so I'm remembering the source in the 90s though, right?
- 9:58[SPEAKER_01]: Well, yeah, like, you know, yeah, but it wasn't even you know, let's say 95, 96.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I said it wasn't making it was doing good.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know what I'm saying?
- 10:07[SPEAKER_01]: It was but as hip hop was growing
- 10:09[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_01]: The source was going.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_01]: And hip hop journalism was grown.
- 10:14[SPEAKER_01]: This was all brand new.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you figure like 96 was only 8 years apart from when it was just one piece of paper at a Harvard radio station with Dave Mays, you know.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_01]: But how did I meet?
- 10:27[SPEAKER_01]: I was what my group, and we was doing like this, Telethana at another college radio station, W-E-R-S, Emerson College, and Dave had showed up there, and he wanted to interview us.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_01]: That's out the blue.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_01]: It was like a popular,
- 10:41[SPEAKER_00]: local group around that time gotcha gotcha gotcha gotcha and then what what what what what about him like like how Because that just seems like a you know me care for the family.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_00]: That was crazy.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_01]: Why why do for Harvard like that from DC What you know he just and you know it was it was it was crazy how we popped up yeah because
- 11:00[SPEAKER_01]: You know, Boston's a racist town.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_01]: So it's like very segregated white black.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_01]: But hip hop kind of brings people together.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_01]: Mm-hmm.
- 11:09[SPEAKER_01]: And he, I guess, was interested in just any of you.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_01]: And he had heard about us, and I think he heard us on another college radio station.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_01]: I'm music being played or maybe heard us get interviewed, and he came up there himself.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, it was kind of...
- 11:24[SPEAKER_01]: You know, because we was a wild cool back then, so you know, it was kind of a brave of him.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_00]: Right, right.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_01]: You don't say it's even one of the interviewers, man.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you know, we did the interview, I think, and then we just changed numbers and really it was just a friendship here.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_01]: started a radio station at Harvard.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_01]: It's only like five watts.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_01]: It really wasn't, you know, at Harvard's in Cambridge, so the station bleeding, you couldn't hear it in Rocksbury.
- 11:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_01]: But it was some of the Saturday afternoon at 12 o'clock street beat, my DJ with my group two times at the time, Def Jeff.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_01]: or he wanted him to DJ and I would go up there and I'd co-host it.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_01]: What I'm just something to get out of the hood for a minute, Cambridge is cool, quiet, you know, low, low, it's no different taste of life.
- 12:08[SPEAKER_00]: Sure, sure, sure, sure.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_00]: And then, and then, as the, how did it feel though, as the success of the source grew, and it became, you know, like the awards, like it became part of, well, the culture though, you know?
- 12:25[SPEAKER_01]: It's not like, I guess, of course it had now, it felt good, like I said it, but back then, we was building it.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_01]: And every day was just a lot of hard work and a lot of trying to stay faithful to the vision.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_01]: Like for instance, the source towards didn't make no money.
- 12:41[SPEAKER_01]: We did about seven of them until the last one.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_01]: We was losing money, but we had to stay true to the vision because we've seen it.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_01]: We've seen that.
- 12:50[SPEAKER_01]: The Grammys wasn't really given hip-hop.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_01]: it's just do hip-hop some streets and the Grammys was far away from the streets yeah yeah so you know when they gave awards it was like to Will Smith or like the safe guys yeah but there was so many guys that was really you know successful yeah that wasn't getting really any attention when it comes to awards or TV yeah you know people was it was very reluctant to put
- 13:22[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, man, you know, that's why I don't, you know, I mean it was good, you know, what we started making money, everything was good, yeah, yeah, but it was just a wild period at that time, you know, the 90s was a wild period, yeah, for sure, you know, it was like, I don't know, we started getting so much money and things were just happening, you know, so fast, yeah, I was getting like mate, you know, I was getting like 800, I was like,
- 13:50[SPEAKER_01]: Motown signed me for like 600,000.
- 13:50[SPEAKER_01]: Electra signed me for 800,000.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_01]: So money was coming in from everywhere.
- 13:52[SPEAKER_01]: We're making about two and a half million a month on ads.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so just everything was just, everything that we had built was happening fast.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
- 14:05[SPEAKER_01]: Even though we did some amazing things, of course we spent money, of course we did, but it just happened so fast, you know?
- 14:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_00]: If you could go back to that time, like just like with money coming fast, like monetarily, like what would you, would you have done anything different?
- 14:23[SPEAKER_01]: What would you have done anything different?
- 14:24[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you know, you know,
- 14:26[SPEAKER_01]: Of course, you're always going to think of something you could do that for sure, for sure.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_01]: Things are million things.
- 14:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a firm believer that whatever your journey is and whatever took place in your life.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_01]: It took place for some sort of reason.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_01]: Whether good or bad if it was bad, it was the lesson that had to be learned.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_01]: If it was good with it, there was just a moment in your life that was going to be good.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_01]: It's nice that, you know, you're wasting your time regretting and what it should have could have.
- 14:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, for sure, for sure.
- 14:52[SPEAKER_01]: No, I'm saying as long as you're still here now, that's a blessing that I've got.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_01]: That's the fact.
- 14:56[SPEAKER_01]: You know, especially the stuff that we went through and helped the and free.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, for sure.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_01]: But I don't get too much into regret.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_00]: For sure, for sure.
- 15:04[SPEAKER_00]: Um, you've had some like legendary beefs, right?
- 15:07[SPEAKER_00]: Meaning like, I mean, you know, oh, I mean, you know what I'm talking about?
- 15:11[SPEAKER_00]: I just know, I'm talking about it.
- 15:12[SPEAKER_00]: Um, simultaneously though, you're running, you know what I mean?
- 15:16[SPEAKER_00]: You have your music career, you've got these beefs.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_00]: You're running this successful magazine.
- 15:20[SPEAKER_00]: Um, how, you know, how, like, how did you balance that?
- 15:24[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you know what I mean?
- 15:25[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you know, with me and Dave, our relationship was always an orthodox.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_01]: Depends on who you was, everybody had a million stories on who I was and what I was doing at the source.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_01]: They had that million opinions.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_01]: You know, me and Dave, I think our relationship and I think we was put together because me being from the streets black, you know, my lineage is Cape Veridian, but we're African black.
- 15:54[SPEAKER_01]: Dave being Jewish from East from DC Jewish, yeah, he grew up around a lot of black guys.
- 16:02[SPEAKER_01]: Our dynamic, I think, together with him having the vision to be like, he wants to be the role of the stone of hip-hop, for Maca, you know what I'm saying?
- 16:11[SPEAKER_01]: And really bring companies and advertisements to understand that this is going to be the next big light, not just music, but lifestyle, yeah.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_01]: influential to the culture, the type of situation, and he had to relate that to the advertisers.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of advertisers, just like I said, people wouldn't put in more platforms, advertisers would not advertise their projects with guys from the streets from the projects.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_01]: guns, drugs, naked women, so Dave got to give him his flowers.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_01]: He was really responsible for that.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_01]: Running a magazine takes a lot of work.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 16:49[SPEAKER_01]: People think you could just run them, but it was a lot of work at the source.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of, it really wasn't no nine to five.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_01]: It was sometimes nine to nine.
- 16:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, how big did you guys like grow it?
- 17:00[SPEAKER_01]: Like how many like staff members or mainly had staff we had office in L.A. Sunset we had staff we had office in Miami staff in New York probably was about 50, 60 people Wow
- 17:17[SPEAKER_01]: You know, like I said, probably at our height, every month we probably got up to two and half a million, a month with advertising, you know, so, you know, we, we tasted real success.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_01]: For sure.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_01]: You know, of course, you know, we, we made some mistakes along the way, for sure.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_01]: You know, but, yeah, like the thing about, I want people to understand is that, you know, me and Dave, like I said,
- 17:45[SPEAKER_01]: Our relationship and what we did and how we navigated that magazine was the success of the magazine.
- 17:52[SPEAKER_01]: The staff, there was a lot of great staff there, but they would come and go.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_01]: You know, me and Dave,
- 18:01[SPEAKER_01]: Being the heads it was a lot of crisis management a lot.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you know, dealing with street guys dealing with labels Trying to make everybody happy dealing with advertisers.
- 18:11[SPEAKER_01]: It is not easy.
- 18:12[SPEAKER_01]: I think it took a lot of work and our method and you know With me and Dave and how we did it was something that we didn't like
- 18:22[SPEAKER_01]: Sit and talk about it just develop.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, me going over to the source and might My responsibilities developed.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Dave being around me and my guys all that was a A working progress with everybody.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because they you know, we was street guys.
- 18:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and there would you know, and um, you know, Dave wasn't into that
- 18:42[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and I was an interjournalism, but I learned a lot from Dave and Dave learned a lot from me and together I think we was hip-hop being College and administrative and street and creative and outside that was That's what made the source what it was and you know Put 18 years of our blood sweat and tears in it, man.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 19:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you'll give it everything we got
- 19:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, when you think about the time, right?
- 19:07[SPEAKER_00]: Because you got the source, you got the double excels, you got the vibe magazine copies, right?
- 19:12[SPEAKER_00]: That's what's like what made, you know, what made your last because they, because of the real cause, yeah, we had the blueprint.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_01]: And like I said, one thing, one thing, see vibe was shutting the streets.
- 19:25[SPEAKER_01]: They, they wasn't, you know, there was, they was the,
- 19:28[SPEAKER_01]: You know, upper echelon, upper echelon, upper echelon, upper echelon, upper echelon, upper echelon, upper echelon, upper echelon, upper echelon, upper echelon, upper echelon, upper echelon, upper echelon, upper echelon, upper echelon, upper echelon, upper echelon, upper echelon, upper echelon, upper echelon, upper echelon, upper echelon, upper echelon, upper echelon, upper echelon, upper echelon, upper echelon, upper echelon, upper echelon,
- 19:42[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's so big, copepsy, copepsy, copepsy, right, right, right, right, right, right.
- 19:47[SPEAKER_01]: And not only that though, but we only put 12 artists a year.
- 19:50[SPEAKER_01]: 12 covers, there's way more artists.
- 19:52[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, XXL could put other artists that we didn't for that month, but it was just, it was just a carbon copy.
- 19:58[SPEAKER_01]: The guys that owned XXL were, they were publishers of like,
- 20:03[SPEAKER_01]: Fish and magazine golf magazine golf died just field and stream all these you know real white magazines They just said hey look the sources make it out of money.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_01]: Let's just copy.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 20:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah What did y'all did y'all sell the source like what what like what was the exit of it?
- 20:20[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, no, what happened was Dave had took out a loan by 12 million in the mid-90s and want to start source.com.
- 20:30[SPEAKER_01]: He's seen the vision and seen where the internet was going, yeah, with advertisement.
- 20:36[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, it was real high interest rate, right?
- 20:39[SPEAKER_01]: But he banked everything on it.
- 20:45[SPEAKER_01]: Steve, the BET's owner, man, I'm running up blank, was BET who sold it, oh Bob Johnson, I'm Johnson off his 55 million dollars to buy it, we food it, DC, when his office he had just sold BET for a lot of money, he said, look, I don't want to talk too much I'm just going to write down on a piece of paper, what I want, I'm going to walk out
- 21:13[SPEAKER_01]: So we opened it up a little piece of paper.
- 21:15[SPEAKER_00]: We just saved it.
- 21:16[SPEAKER_00]: That's a five, five blue ink I'll never forget.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_01]: Five, five comma zero, zero, zero, comma zero, zero, zero, zero, zero.
- 21:24[SPEAKER_00]: Dave looked at me the day.
- 21:26[SPEAKER_01]: So what do you think?
- 21:27[SPEAKER_01]: We start doing numbers in our head.
- 21:28[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you know, we owe the bank $30 million from that loan.
- 21:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, loan does.
- 21:32[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, wow, wow, wow.
- 21:33[SPEAKER_01]: with the entrance.
- 21:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, taxes.
- 21:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 21:35[SPEAKER_01]: And then we, you know, he wanted to buy it and just let us go.
- 21:40[SPEAKER_01]: We, we didn't want to let out baby go.
- 21:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 21:42[SPEAKER_01]: And we wanted 75 million.
- 21:43[SPEAKER_01]: We was asking 75.
- 21:44[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 21:45[SPEAKER_01]: He offers 55.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 21:47[SPEAKER_01]: We felt that couple more years was that close.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_01]: I'm taking a public.
- 21:52[SPEAKER_01]: That close.
- 21:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 21:53[SPEAKER_01]: With everything.
- 21:54[SPEAKER_01]: So it's entertainment.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_01]: We had did on the awards.
- 21:57[SPEAKER_01]: TV shows that was on syndication.
- 21:59[SPEAKER_01]: Source, our
- 22:02[SPEAKER_01]: I came up with compilation Dowdons, we did a debt chain, we sold over 5 million copies, which I'm fighting universal to get my money now.
- 22:09[SPEAKER_01]: They only about $10, $15 million right now.
- 22:12[SPEAKER_01]: Right now, today.
- 22:12[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely right now.
- 22:13[SPEAKER_01]: I did a 50-50 profit share and split with my record company called Surrender Records, which was a arm of source entertainment.
- 22:22[SPEAKER_01]: So even though when we lost the source, the rent had none to do with surrender records.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_01]: Universal did a 50-50 profit share rate.
- 22:29[SPEAKER_01]: They gave us $4.5 million up front.
- 22:31[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe about another million, then just stop paying.
- 22:35[SPEAKER_01]: And the reason they stopped paying was because when Jimmy Ivine took over Universal, he was playing with, you know, my money, and because of the M&M situation, so he purposely stopped my check, so I'm in court right now, but it's looking really well, but they only well over 15 million dollars.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you're so 5 million domestic.
- 22:54[SPEAKER_01]: Right, right.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_01]: Seven different, nine different compilation albums.
- 22:58[SPEAKER_01]: And what they was was I came with the idea to put, whether it was on a cover, we would
- 23:05[SPEAKER_01]: So you have, but just songs on it.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_01]: I would always put a little bonus on it.
- 23:09[SPEAKER_01]: I did make one with rock the party.
- 23:11[SPEAKER_01]: That was, you know, because rock the party was on, but yeah, and you know, we did really well with it and overseas.
- 23:18[SPEAKER_01]: They never even gave me an overseas accounting.
- 23:20[SPEAKER_01]: So the money they owe me is ridiculous.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, court.
- 23:44[SPEAKER_01]: they take advantage of it and the crazy thing is if you don't find out in a period of time statual limitations catches you yeah but what they've done to me was fraud you know this is over 15 years ago 20 years ago yeah so you know it's it's looking really well when yeah you know I'd I'll let you know that's good that's good that's good and and so so Bob Johnson over
- 24:08[SPEAKER_01]: And then we said, no, as I know, we said no, because again, we want to stay on if we, we would took it.
- 24:14[SPEAKER_01]: Because me and Dave could have walked away with a, you know, a few million of peace after taxes, paying the bank, paying everything we had to pay off.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 24:20[SPEAKER_01]: But we knew we had an order for the source to still thrive.
- 24:24[SPEAKER_01]: You still need a benzino or a Dave.
- 24:26[SPEAKER_01]: at your home, for sure.
- 24:28[SPEAKER_01]: These guys that ended up taking it over black and enterprise and outland of McMillan.
- 24:32[SPEAKER_01]: These guys, they're not even hip hop.
- 24:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he's a black man that kind of like Ivy Leagueers, lawyers, and that really don't have the, you know, even though they'll say, hey, man, I grew up in Brooklyn and I grew up.
- 24:43[SPEAKER_01]: That's not the point, you know I'm saying in order, you know, you could think your hip hop and you know, and I'm sure you you know, you listen to it and I'm sure you know and I'm sure, but there's a to run a magazine and to understand what the country and the world and to get the pulse, you gotta be at then in the streets and a lot of people are scared to be in the streets.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_01]: To this day, everything's here, you know, outside's where it counts and I've always been that, to this day.
- 25:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 25:08[SPEAKER_00]: And so, so, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what happened?
- 25:11[SPEAKER_00]: And y'all want them selling it.
- 25:12[SPEAKER_01]: We had to know, um, black and appropriate, we had to sell up percentage.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_01]: It was me and Dave's 100%.
- 25:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 25:18[SPEAKER_01]: So, once it, the, we all the bank 30 million.
- 25:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 25:21[SPEAKER_01]: Black and surprise, there was a magazine, uh, real prestigious black, uh, business magazine out for a while.
- 25:28[SPEAKER_01]: But they was, I mean, the furthest of, I mean, guys with sandals and no socks.
- 25:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 25:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 25:33[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 25:34[SPEAKER_01]: And, uh, Tommy Bahamas shirts on, you
- 25:37[SPEAKER_01]: And God bless them.
- 25:38[SPEAKER_01]: They are saying black man gets your money.
- 25:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 25:40[SPEAKER_01]: When it comes to this hip hop, no.
- 25:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 25:42[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely not.
- 25:43[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if a new black enterprise was the one that took it over, then they kicked me in Dave out.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_01]: War.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 25:50[SPEAKER_01]: They, it was like a hostile takeover.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_01]: They, it was like, they had three people on the board and we just two of us and they got rid of us.
- 25:55[SPEAKER_01]: Well, what was the, the just still owner percentage?
- 25:58[SPEAKER_01]: Or, you know, a lot of that answers would be Dave.
- 26:01[SPEAKER_01]: But, yeah.
- 26:02[SPEAKER_01]: You know, they bought a percentage and then like I said,
- 26:06[SPEAKER_01]: I just know that we was being David.
- 26:08[SPEAKER_01]: Dave handles all that.
- 26:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, for sure.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_01]: I just remembered that they got rid of us.
- 26:12[SPEAKER_01]: Dave trusted them.
- 26:13[SPEAKER_00]: I never trusted them.
- 26:15[SPEAKER_01]: I never liked them.
- 26:16[SPEAKER_01]: I never when they came around.
- 26:17[SPEAKER_01]: I never want to deal with them.
- 26:18[SPEAKER_01]: I never want to know me and the Dave hands with that.
- 26:22[SPEAKER_01]: Just like the internet.
- 26:23[SPEAKER_01]: Dave had a great vision, but it was just too early.
- 26:26[SPEAKER_01]: And it crashed and we lost all that money.
- 26:28[SPEAKER_01]: He opened up a brand new office on 5th Avenue where a bunch of computers that was like this big, like it looked like, you know.
- 26:35[SPEAKER_01]: Foxes and this was in the 90s and it was about five six shares ahead of its time.
- 26:40[SPEAKER_01]: Wow, you know, he had the idea Yeah, and a lot anything any Back then any when any before pre-phones anything That tried to crash right, you know, I'm saying you know, we had to pay Got to pay the bank back and we saw the percentage and they had again.
- 26:59[SPEAKER_01]: They they they they figured
- 27:01[SPEAKER_01]: Dave and Ray, you know, they're the ones, you know, because, you know, they're the ones that mess the source up and it's like, as soon as they bought it, the source crashed.
- 27:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 27:10[SPEAKER_01]: It just crashed.
- 27:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 27:12[SPEAKER_01]: And then when Londell McMillan got it now, it's not doing that there.
- 27:16[SPEAKER_01]: He's living off of selling, you know, Londell is a lawyer guy, who's Prince's lawyer, Mike Jackson's lawyer, black man.
- 27:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 27:25[SPEAKER_01]: But again, man, not, you know, he ain't hip-hop.
- 27:28[SPEAKER_01]: He, uh, how he, how he's making his money is renting out the source of words for the for movies, to pop big and WA was all in there.
- 27:41[SPEAKER_01]: That's my work.
- 27:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I know that's my work.
- 27:44[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 27:44[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 27:44[SPEAKER_01]: So no matter, you, you have it.
- 27:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 27:47[SPEAKER_01]: But at the end of the day, it's not your legacy.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_01]: And that's the difference.
- 27:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, how do you how do you feel about that like when you think about that right the legacy the work that you've done, you know, whether you're being compensated from it or not, but like, you know, you're you're part of that that legacy that that's, you know, reason.
- 28:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 28:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know the reason yeah, I'm saying yeah the answer the reason you know the the solution the antidote Yeah, it's it's not part it's it's the whole yeah and Shalada me and Dave was the reason and and I think that
- 28:23[SPEAKER_01]: Again, you know, sometimes these guys, they see money, but they didn't know what it takes.
- 28:28[SPEAKER_01]: It's almost like a car, like you see one of these dope cars and you get the car.
- 28:31[SPEAKER_01]: You know, the original owner really knows that it looks a crannies car.
- 28:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know what I'm saying?
- 28:35[SPEAKER_01]: You get the car and the car's not running the way you thought it was, but the original owner knows that car.
- 28:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 28:41[SPEAKER_01]: And that's just what it was with the source.
- 28:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 28:43[SPEAKER_01]: Me and Dave, we did amazing things.
- 28:45[SPEAKER_01]: And, um,
- 28:47[SPEAKER_01]: built it from the ground up and everything that came through there that was successful had our stamp on it and hip hop at that time was under a standard yeah and we were part of the gatekeepers and and we held the standard well yeah you know people can say what they want and you know internet I don't listen to it yeah you know we mean Dave did that there's nobody can take that from sure absolutely
- 29:10[SPEAKER_00]: Right, five bikes, we didn't, who was like that with them?
- 29:12[SPEAKER_00]: They were all the same.
- 29:13[SPEAKER_01]: They were all the same.
- 29:14[SPEAKER_01]: But that came from Roland Stone.
- 29:16[SPEAKER_01]: You know, Roland Stone would rate the albums.
- 29:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 29:18[SPEAKER_01]: And Dave came with the idea to put the mics with the same rate and system.
- 29:21[SPEAKER_01]: Because Roland Stone, I think, used albums.
- 29:24[SPEAKER_01]: And we used mics.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 29:26[SPEAKER_01]: That became the...
- 29:28[SPEAKER_00]: That became the, you know, the, the, the, I got a lot of flack, the make a break, the make a break, you know, the make a, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I got a lot of flack by, you know, because I don't remember, like I, I've been high school, we're like, you know, let's see what else coming up.
- 29:41[SPEAKER_00]: You only got four mics, you know what I'm saying?
- 29:43[SPEAKER_00]: Right, right.
- 29:45[SPEAKER_00]: What, what was the, you know, after the source, what was the trajectory like what, what did you guys decide to do after that?
- 29:52[SPEAKER_01]: I came with the idea immediately, not even a week later with hip hop weekly.
- 29:57[SPEAKER_01]: you know, because at that time now, it's crazy, but the internet is starting to pop now.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 30:03[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's like everything that Dave seen has come to fruition six, seven years later.
- 30:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_01]: No, we could do about it.
- 30:09[SPEAKER_01]: You know, that's how the ball bounce.
- 30:11[SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, at that point, when I used to take flights, I'd always get star and choir us and just read those.
- 30:19[SPEAKER_01]: And I felt that, hey, man, there's a lot of the long reading and the long stories over with because everything's going to be now coming through here and it's going to be quick reading, quick stories, quick articles, people's attention spans are much more smaller.
- 30:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 30:34[SPEAKER_01]: So we had to find something to fit, you know, that area.
- 30:39[SPEAKER_01]: And hip hop weekly just came to my head.
- 30:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 30:42[SPEAKER_01]: And man, you know, it did well.
- 30:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 30:44[SPEAKER_01]: Of course not as well as the source, but I'll pay the bills for a minute.
- 30:49[SPEAKER_01]: Beautiful brand of the hip-hop league.
- 30:51[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we just I took us weekly.
- 30:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and just say, hey, we're gonna make it Hip-hop can't keep the font for the source.
- 30:58[SPEAKER_01]: We're gonna make it the thing was We we to put out a magazine one week is every week.
- 31:04[SPEAKER_01]: You really have to have a big staff big office We didn't have that no more sure.
- 31:07[SPEAKER_01]: It was a few of us and then we had
- 31:09[SPEAKER_01]: Journalists and different parts of it.
- 31:11[SPEAKER_01]: We actually did that magazine online, put it together.
- 31:14[SPEAKER_01]: It was an online thing, but instead of we knew we couldn't do it every week, but we knew we could do it every two weeks.
- 31:20[SPEAKER_01]: So that would still constitute us to use weekly.
- 31:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
- 31:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
- 32:11[SPEAKER_01]: the internet's popping, you know, me and Dave are kind of, we had been together so long.
- 32:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean, years, bro, yeah, yeah, and I think, you know, he had just met a girl and fell in love.
- 32:22[SPEAKER_01]: I think it was just time for us to kind of go out on ways and that's what happened, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, and then, um,
- 32:32[SPEAKER_00]: any other businesses you decided to do after that?
- 32:34[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I mean, love and hip hop came after that.
- 32:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 32:37[SPEAKER_01]: On my did the crab trap, because I like the cook.
- 32:40[SPEAKER_01]: So I ended up a restaurant, did really well.
- 32:42[SPEAKER_01]: I was the first one, actually, to introduce the crabs in the bag, the sauces, yeah, a wave before juicy crab.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_01]: Or, yeah, absolutely, I had a place on Delk Road.
- 32:52[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure people look at the,
- 32:54[SPEAKER_01]: You know, they'll know, and if you have lines out to do, you know, I had our own Zeno sauce, Asian Caves, and it'd make a jerk sauce.
- 33:01[SPEAKER_01]: Everything was all my recipes.
- 33:02[SPEAKER_01]: It's something great, it's crap cakes.
- 33:04[SPEAKER_01]: I just love to cook, and it was a success.
- 33:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 33:07[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of work, a lot of hard work.
- 33:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_00]: When you decided to do love a hip hop, did you worry about it, tonnishing your reputation?
- 33:19[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I didn't.
- 33:20[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't cast for it.
- 33:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 33:23[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I was, me, I was always private when it comes to relationships.
- 33:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 33:27[SPEAKER_01]: People just did not know who I was, you know, talking to.
- 33:31[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, you know, Stevie Slees was the one that cast it for with me.
- 33:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 33:37[SPEAKER_01]: I came up with just to,
- 33:38[SPEAKER_01]: I came up here for Miami because I was living in Miami at the time and hip-hop weekly office was down there.
- 33:43[SPEAKER_01]: My studio was down there and everything.
- 33:46[SPEAKER_01]: And I just decided to come up here for two weeks and hang out with them because he had just left Miami, you know, staying with me for a minute.
- 33:51[SPEAKER_01]: You know, because me and Stevie, you know, we had a relationship way before it loved in hip-hop.
- 33:56[SPEAKER_01]: You know, me and Sly's back in the day with two wild guys.
- 33:58[SPEAKER_01]: They had come back with me for some sort.
- 34:00[SPEAKER_01]: So we had that in common.
- 34:02[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, he cast it for it, and then I was just really at the time who stayed with me.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_01]: I had got a house here.
- 34:11[SPEAKER_01]: I had rented a house when I came up for Miami.
- 34:14[SPEAKER_01]: And I think him and Mimi had just got into it in real life.
- 34:18[SPEAKER_01]: So, as soon as I got up, he basically, I'd go pick him up and he came and lived with me.
- 34:21[SPEAKER_01]: He was living with me, so when loving hip hop first came on, he was staying with me.
- 34:25[SPEAKER_01]: I was staying together.
- 34:30[SPEAKER_01]: set, and then you know, I end up seeing one of the girls not talking to her off camera.
- 34:37[SPEAKER_01]: I wasn't going to be on camera talking to nobody, right?
- 34:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because you know, I already knew the messiness that comes to that.
- 34:44[SPEAKER_01]: I wasn't doing that, and then you know, what thing led to another way of, you know, Mona had called the girl I was talking to and said, basically look, you know.
- 34:54[SPEAKER_01]: need to be on the show if you're going to be talking to one of the castmen.
- 34:57[SPEAKER_01]: Now I didn't take it like she was going to stop talking to me, but I don't know what made me decide.
- 35:03[SPEAKER_01]: She had want me to do it and I just started doing scenes with her.
- 35:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'd call you and don't send the rest of her sister.
- 35:10[SPEAKER_01]: So it was kind of like, I just fell into that.
- 35:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 35:14[SPEAKER_00]: Did it, you know, financially?
- 35:16[SPEAKER_00]: Did it help you at all?
- 35:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, my reality TV, especially back then, those big shows.
- 35:21[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, my third season paid well, first two, I didn't get shit.
- 35:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but after that, marriage book can't paid really good.
- 35:29[SPEAKER_01]: Old board network paid really good, and I was getting paid.
- 35:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 35:33[SPEAKER_01]: It was some good checks coming from the, yeah, you know, TV one paid really good.
- 35:37[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I got some real big checks from from reality TV.
- 35:40[SPEAKER_01]: So absolutely, it helped me financially.
- 35:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 35:44[SPEAKER_01]: Let's talk about, so now you, I mean, as a father, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you were a, you were a, you were a, well, it'll actually a couple, my son, seven years old had wrapped on my album, we had case, and we did a huge video, yeah, and a new York, it was called Sean, like my son, case, the singer, you know, I was, was he did the hook, yeah, and Ray Ray was like seven, eight, we did a video, and all the rappers
- 36:12[SPEAKER_01]: Then he had his own deal at Inniscope, Jenny signed him for Huge Deal with him, Baby Pond at the town, Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't Don't
- 36:28[SPEAKER_01]: Adam didn't come out because you know me and Eminem started going to we went through when he was in the scope Jimmy dropped him but Ray Ray's nice he's under chavo if you check him out but he was the first one I mean my kids came out the woman in the studio yeah yeah yeah that's been my whole life yeah yeah just music yeah so when Corey was introduced to her she just would hang around the studio and just see her brother do it and just really be I knew I never knew how much he was really paying attention to be on
- 36:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
- 37:13[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you know, it's impossible.
- 37:15[SPEAKER_01]: You can.
- 37:16[SPEAKER_01]: You had to deal with everything that comes with the good, the bad, and ugly, and it's all three.
- 37:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 37:20[SPEAKER_01]: Fame brings the good, the bad, and the ugly, with your family, friends, and anybody else.
- 37:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 37:25[SPEAKER_01]: But you've got to navigate through that.
- 37:27[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, that's not easy.
- 37:28[SPEAKER_01]: I think the situation with Cory was extra hard for me because I love it so much, you know.
- 37:34[SPEAKER_00]: But...
- 37:35[SPEAKER_01]: If there's, and we're in an amazing place, I just came from there.
- 37:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 37:39[SPEAKER_00]: And you came from there to see, you know, just from New York.
- 37:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 37:42[SPEAKER_01]: And I want to thank you because I want to let anybody know that I was supposed to be here last week, but I was in New York.
- 37:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 37:48[SPEAKER_01]: And I was actually working and then, you know, you know, me and her got together and I seen the baby.
- 37:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 37:54[SPEAKER_01]: And it was just an amazing, amazing time, man.
- 37:56[SPEAKER_01]: It was so good right now.
- 37:58[SPEAKER_01]: And it's like,
- 37:59[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I'm so happy about it.
- 38:01[SPEAKER_01]: I'm so, but the lessons I did learn and it was like, first of all, the internet is here.
- 38:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, social media is here.
- 38:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 38:11[SPEAKER_01]: And that is definitely affecting the relationships between parent and child.
- 38:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and that's everybody across.
- 38:18[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody for sure.
- 38:19[SPEAKER_01]: Of course, me and Koy stood out because of who we are and because of the internet, for sure.
- 38:30[SPEAKER_01]: should be even more private than the moments with your spouse I won't go for it.
- 38:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 38:34[SPEAKER_01]: And the internet is just not allowing that.
- 38:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 38:37[SPEAKER_01]: So I've learned how to not just deal with my child when these moments come up as any parent would.
- 38:46[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 38:47[SPEAKER_01]: Nobody, we don't have a handbook from the hood on how to raise kids.
- 38:51[SPEAKER_01]: And what we do the best we can.
- 38:54[SPEAKER_01]: And I was raised by a mother and father that gave me morals, different rules and regulations.
- 39:00[SPEAKER_01]: So I was kind of like a hard parent, but a very generous parent.
- 39:04[SPEAKER_01]: I'd spoil you, but I'd still be hard on you, the same time.
- 39:08[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, you're going to have times, difficult times when your kids kind of disagree with you or do something that you don't think they should be doing, right?
- 39:18[SPEAKER_01]: That just comes with parents.
- 39:21[SPEAKER_01]: And so without the internet, you wouldn't have to do it.
- 39:24[SPEAKER_01]: Nobody would just be you and them.
- 39:25[SPEAKER_01]: It makes it easier when the world's not looking in judging you.
- 39:30[SPEAKER_01]: What I have learned and what I could pass on to other parents is that there is a difference if the internet was here and if the internet wasn't here, raising gen Z's, and even having a relationship with millennials, there's a difference, okay, it's more challenging with the internet, so you have to just your style of how your relationship is with them and how you raise them.
- 39:56[SPEAKER_01]: and the dynamic of the father, mother, child, or young adult, or adult.
- 40:02[SPEAKER_01]: And I think I got it now, at first, you can't be so personal and sensitive.
- 40:13[SPEAKER_01]: The first thing you're going to do is be mad because no adult wants to be disrespected by the child in front of the world, but you have to take that out of it.
- 40:21[SPEAKER_01]: You got it that that has you got to take that out of it.
- 40:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and because I think that's what That's what takes precedent inside your emotions.
- 40:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you're more angry that in the virus you think in your head, but yeah You know that's my child no matter what that's my child right and with anybody else thinks
- 40:40[SPEAKER_01]: means absolutely you have to block that out right now really you have to that cannot mean anything to you yeah because that takes more than on the emotions than with the child did right no so I had to learn that yeah and then just give core her space man yeah you know she's done amazing things yeah she's a young adult um
- 41:02[SPEAKER_01]: I know she's watched me, so you have to take faith in Him into yourself because she's watched you.
- 41:08[SPEAKER_01]: So you have to trust her in these things.
- 41:10[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, um, you know, I'm saying it and and another thing, you're going to put your faith in God.
- 41:16[SPEAKER_01]: Still stand on what you stand on.
- 41:18[SPEAKER_01]: You don't break on the things and the foundations of an adult and maturity that you know will help them.
- 41:24[SPEAKER_01]: You can't break that because that could actually hurt them if you just tell them what they want to hear or tell them when you know they might be not right Just agree with them.
- 41:34[SPEAKER_01]: Just to agree.
- 41:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so there's a fine line.
- 41:36[SPEAKER_01]: You got to walk with that as a parent.
- 41:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and man.
- 41:39[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just man.
- 41:39[SPEAKER_01]: We just
- 41:40[SPEAKER_01]: I went up there, I made a shrimp, and greats, and I was playing with Yoko, and, you know, not just caught my son Taj, you know, I had two by her mother, and it was just, man, I'm, you know, blessed.
- 41:50[SPEAKER_00]: More than a blessing.
- 41:51[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just so appreciative of the moment.
- 41:53[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going back up the next week to see her, and it's just so amazing, man, and like, together we're dope, you know, like, you know, you know, you know, you know, you know, you know, you know, you know, you know, you know, you know, you know, you know, you know, you know, you know, you know, you
- 42:00[SPEAKER_01]: You know, watching her, she's a cook cook, so we don't go cook cooks, we cook together.
- 42:03[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I'm saying?
- 42:05[SPEAKER_01]: You know, of course, she likes, you know, we watch like SpongeBob, yeah, things like, you know, I like SpongeBob, she likes it.
- 42:12[SPEAKER_01]: So things that we like together, man, and really, we see each other, there was no awkwardness, there was no, we didn't.
- 42:17[SPEAKER_01]: And almost like nothing happened.
- 42:19[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 42:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, man.
- 42:20[SPEAKER_00]: And I know it's real family, don't like.
- 42:21[SPEAKER_00]: Come on, I love you.
- 42:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, man.
- 42:23[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, I'm really, really, really pleased with that.
- 42:27[SPEAKER_01]: From hair on our relationship will only be amazing.
- 42:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, know that.
- 42:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, how how do you how do you prepare or it or do you prepare her or what have you to her from the business side?
- 42:37[SPEAKER_00]: You know like you've made millions of dollars.
- 42:40[SPEAKER_01]: She's you know, well, you know, one thing I could say about Cory money wise
- 42:46[SPEAKER_01]: Corey gets it.
- 42:48[SPEAKER_01]: She's worked at a very young age.
- 42:50[SPEAKER_01]: She had her own apartment young.
- 42:51[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I mean, Corey, she works.
- 42:53[SPEAKER_01]: She was doing telemarketing like, Corey, and then she's, you know, Corey comes from really rough plot.
- 42:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 43:00[SPEAKER_01]: My family, street family.
- 43:02[SPEAKER_01]: My mother worked with me.
- 43:03[SPEAKER_01]: My father was real street.
- 43:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 43:04[SPEAKER_01]: Her mother's family.
- 43:05[SPEAKER_01]: Same thing.
- 43:06[SPEAKER_01]: Street.
- 43:06[SPEAKER_01]: You from Rocksbury.
- 43:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 43:08[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, hustlers, dope dealers, drugs, guns.
- 43:11[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that's what she comes from.
- 43:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 43:14[SPEAKER_01]: And not saying that bragging, for sure, for sure, it's just, you know, surviving Boston is, you know, believe me, but Corey comes from that.
- 43:22[SPEAKER_01]: Now she didn't have to pour a say, be a part of that, you know, I'm saying in the, in the level that we was, but,
- 43:30[SPEAKER_01]: she watched us and she watched me and you know I'm saying she's very very intelligent and she knows how to, man, when it comes to money, man, noise better than me.
- 43:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, man, it took me a while to really understand how to manage money and you know I'm saying but she knows that a young age, so yeah.
- 43:49[SPEAKER_01]: I'm here if she asked me, right for sure, for sure, if there's any questions that she wants, but I have full faith in her and everything she's doing, she's an amazing mother, and you know, she's still my baby, so if there's any questions or anything, she let me hurt her music when I was at her meal.
- 44:06[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, of course, yeah, yeah.
- 44:07[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, no, I'm not going to say nothing about them because last time I said somebody
- 44:18[SPEAKER_01]: You know the stuff that she dropped I liked right I keep a real with it.
- 44:21[SPEAKER_00]: It was a stuff she let hurt me play Wow, so yeah, she has some a real deal for Audrey no, okay, okay, okay, cuz I have I've done some yeah So like sometimes when you hear though, you know like she it sounds like you'll say this and you'll say it
- 44:37[SPEAKER_01]: I love poetry.
- 44:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 44:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 44:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 44:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 44:40[SPEAKER_01]: Now, you know, I mean, listen, Corey has been around wrap her entire life.
- 44:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 44:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 44:44[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 44:44[SPEAKER_01]: Ray Ray's video that he did his seven coi was, I think, too.
- 44:48[SPEAKER_01]: Mm.
- 44:48[SPEAKER_01]: She's in there with a little fur coat on and a little cool, yeah.
- 44:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 44:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 44:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 44:54[SPEAKER_00]: Are you still doing music?
- 44:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, hell yeah, yeah, I love music.
- 44:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I love music.
- 44:58[SPEAKER_00]: You know, apples coming out or anything.
- 44:59[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
- 45:26[SPEAKER_00]: I've done a lot, man.
- 45:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, for sure, for sure.
- 45:28[SPEAKER_01]: Years and years and years of hip hop, and then even reality show and dealing with relationships and women, you know, I have a lot of insight on that because I've been doing those people seeing my problems with that.
- 45:41[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, but again, these are all lessons.
- 45:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 45:43[SPEAKER_01]: So my experience is, you gotta read what a book is.
- 45:46[SPEAKER_01]: It's coming.
- 45:47[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that's coming.
- 45:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 45:49[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I want to do all that.
- 45:50[SPEAKER_01]: You know, with me, I'm pretty much out here.
- 45:51[SPEAKER_01]: Don't know.
- 45:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 45:53[SPEAKER_01]: You know, one thing about it when you're on top, everybody's ringing.
- 45:56[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 45:57[SPEAKER_01]: When when when when when it when it don't look like, you know, I'm saying your phone don't ring.
- 46:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 46:00[SPEAKER_00]: But I got what you look.
- 46:01[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to ring now.
- 46:02[SPEAKER_00]: You're just talking about to get 50Ms.
- 46:05[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's so crazy when it comes, yeah.
- 46:08[SPEAKER_01]: And I think people know, yeah, I think the people especially the closest ones that ain't been checking on me, I think they know how to do it because it'll be too obvious and they know I'm not going to pick up anyway, I'm just going to, ugh, just, ugh, yeah, yeah, forward, yeah, you know what I'm saying?
- 46:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because I was good to a lot of people, man.
- 46:26[SPEAKER_01]: I don't hold, I didn't do nothing for all these people just to get it back, but people really just don't,
- 46:34[SPEAKER_01]: And people only mess with people who are successful.
- 46:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, for sure.
- 46:37[SPEAKER_01]: I've just never been like that.
- 46:38[SPEAKER_01]: I've always been for the underdogs.
- 46:40[SPEAKER_01]: I've always given people opportunities and put them on payroll and jobs just to see how good they would do.
- 46:47[SPEAKER_01]: Right, for sure.
- 46:47[SPEAKER_01]: You don't have to have a college degree.
- 46:49[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I'm saying?
- 46:50[SPEAKER_01]: Like, because I did it.
- 46:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 46:52[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, I'm going to imagine, you put a lot of people on a lot of people, a lot of artists, to give them.
- 46:59[SPEAKER_01]: to have them come on the source of words and let them bring all day guys.
- 47:03[SPEAKER_01]: I would fly hundreds of people and put them in hotels from Boston.
- 47:06[SPEAKER_01]: I had bought a club down there, just show your Boston ID, you get them for free.
- 47:10[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I was doing stuff that nobody had never done, and probably nobody would ever do.
- 47:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and again, you know.
- 47:15[SPEAKER_01]: it'll be in the book and everything but I'm just I was blessed to have have it sure pretty much gave it all away sure for sure you know I'm saying I made a lot of I made a lot of money mistakes yeah you know because I was a hustler so do again I mean I know you said no the grass but like would you would you well again again those those like me up this this is what I believe I believe this
- 47:35[SPEAKER_01]: I believe I had a hell of a run in the streets for sure.
- 47:38[SPEAKER_01]: I believe it would straight to magazines, music, yeah TV.
- 47:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 47:43[SPEAKER_01]: Look at the run that God gave.
- 47:44[SPEAKER_00]: I'm for sure.
- 47:44[SPEAKER_00]: I think that which is why I say like You're legit like this is legendary.
- 47:50[SPEAKER_01]: I know people don't know and I appreciate that I don't consider myself, you know, I can you know Muhammad Ali's a legend.
- 47:55[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I'm saying?
- 47:56[SPEAKER_01]: Those guys in me
- 47:57[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just a street guy from the mud that wants to represent his people to let people know that you can be from the mud.
- 48:03[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm a people person.
- 48:06[SPEAKER_01]: I love people because you know, I just think like, God gave me that run.
- 48:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 48:13[SPEAKER_01]: And then he had to sit me down.
- 48:16[SPEAKER_01]: It kind of humble me and see what it is to struggle again.
- 48:28[SPEAKER_01]: I appreciated the small things, man, just a bad heat.
- 48:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 48:33[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 48:33[SPEAKER_01]: Food in the Fidgerator, like things that I took for granted, maybe, just spending money frivolously, just doing all kind of, yeah, man.
- 48:42[SPEAKER_01]: Like now I look at prices when I shopped for sure, man.
- 48:45[SPEAKER_01]: Sure, yeah.
- 48:46[SPEAKER_01]: These are the things I think God wanted, and I think that he sat me down for a period of time.
- 48:49[SPEAKER_01]: And I think I passed the test.
- 48:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 48:52[SPEAKER_01]: And man, I think that's what this universe of, I think God is, I mean, I'll just say, I don't, you know, listen, you ready?
- 48:57[SPEAKER_01]: Man, listen, yeah, yeah, yeah, because I've looked at my journey, man, and that's what it's about, man, it's not always about money.
- 49:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, sure.
- 49:04[SPEAKER_01]: I'm more happy now, not having the money I had, than I've ever been.
- 49:08[SPEAKER_00]: I want to present, even when you talk about coin and your grandchildren, like,
- 49:13[SPEAKER_00]: It like like how you face lit up though you don't say it, but it's also it's peace like You got money man.
- 49:19[SPEAKER_01]: I I'd have to deal with hundreds of people on a regular basis and their problems and their issues And I did it and I did it willingly and I was good at it.
- 49:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 49:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 49:28[SPEAKER_01]: Christus management.
- 49:28[SPEAKER_01]: I do know but man like that took up my life That took up my time.
- 49:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, now man.
- 49:33[SPEAKER_01]: I can
- 49:35[SPEAKER_01]: I can work out men, I walk, you look good for your age also.
- 49:38[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
- 49:39[SPEAKER_01]: I appreciate your age.
- 49:40[SPEAKER_01]: I walk trails.
- 49:41[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you know what age really isn't nothing?
- 49:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 49:43[SPEAKER_01]: Age doesn't even exist.
- 49:44[SPEAKER_01]: Age is just something for the government to get, you know, to really keep tabs on you.
- 49:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 49:49[SPEAKER_01]: But there is no age.
- 49:51[SPEAKER_01]: You know, people who, you could be dead at 15 and you could live at 92 or so.
- 49:54[SPEAKER_01]: So there's no age, you know, and you could be healthy at 60, you could be really super unhealthy at 16.
- 50:01[SPEAKER_01]: That's amazing.
- 50:01[SPEAKER_00]: So it's just really, you, your mental.
- 50:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 50:05[SPEAKER_01]: Because it starts here first, what you can overcome are your uncomfortabilities in life, the things that are uncomfortable to you, you have to overcome them.
- 50:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 50:17[SPEAKER_01]: Whatever that is, whether it's physical, spiritual, whatever you don't like, you have to make yourself overcome that.
- 50:24[SPEAKER_01]: Lazyness overcome that fear overcome that I don't want it or I don't want it or that you know or that negativity You have to overcome these things these are natural things that are going to get inside you You have to be stronger of to overcome it.
- 50:38[SPEAKER_00]: I've overcame mine.
- 50:40[SPEAKER_01]: I walk trails.
- 50:41[SPEAKER_01]: I look at nature Yeah, and I just look man.
- 50:43[SPEAKER_01]: I just appreciate it.
- 50:45[SPEAKER_01]: I appreciate things that I never ever did before.
- 50:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know I know
- 50:50[SPEAKER_01]: When you're older, it's easy to say, yeah, you're older, but you're supposed to.
- 50:54[SPEAKER_01]: I see life, there were different lens that shit that I did then, I would be disappointed in myself.
- 50:59[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 51:00[SPEAKER_01]: And the things, how I looked at life then, you'd be a fool to look at life the same way.
- 51:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 51:05[SPEAKER_01]: So without being hypocritical, I can't look at life the same way in certain areas.
- 51:11[SPEAKER_01]: I had to change.
- 51:13[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, I lost a lot, but I didn't lose me, I lost material things.
- 51:22[SPEAKER_01]: And I gained insight from God and through God and I gained insight on it to be a better person for myself and for the people.
- 51:30[SPEAKER_00]: And I think, you know, as you look at that level of peace, have you ever had money and peace at the same time?
- 51:38[SPEAKER_01]: never absolutely not and that's a great fucking question yeah that's a great question yeah that's a man yeah I don't even they don't even go together yeah piece of money don't even go together piece in money and that's and look at that yeah peace real peace true peace in money who never go together yeah it just it's just not gonna happen now if it does being white would you
- 52:08[SPEAKER_01]: yeah you would be white yeah if peace if you was at peace and money yeah being black yeah peace and money is hard yeah yeah not one of a cent one of a cent you meant you mentioned um the m and m few and just like how did that start like 23 years people still yeah yeah people still man you know it was a situation I was at the source and I you know I come from Boston Boston's
- 52:35[SPEAKER_01]: I've told the story three million times, but in a nutshell, I just felt like when he came, he was getting preferential treatment that other artists wasn't given.
- 52:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 52:43[SPEAKER_01]: Like for instance, he's in the rock and roll Hall of Fame care versus one.
- 52:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 52:47[SPEAKER_01]: That's the plastic exam.
- 52:50[SPEAKER_01]: That's a perfect exam.
- 52:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 52:51[SPEAKER_01]: So everything, he came in and just because he was white, he was getting preferential treatment and that's what hip hop was against.
- 52:57[SPEAKER_01]: Hip hop was against corporations.
- 52:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 52:59[SPEAKER_01]: You know, the, you know, the,
- 53:03[SPEAKER_01]: like the normal of what was going on, you know what I'm saying in society, we was the rebels, we was against that fashion, everything was against what those people were doing.
- 53:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 53:13[SPEAKER_01]: And I just believe that the powers that be understood that there was a big part of white America that just wouldn't mess with black people at all.
- 53:23[SPEAKER_01]: And so even if a lot of white
- 53:29[SPEAKER_01]: There's a certain millions of them that wouldn't because of the racism, and they just gave them Eminem.
- 53:35[SPEAKER_01]: I just brought that out.
- 53:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 53:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 53:37[SPEAKER_01]: I was in trying to outrap him.
- 53:38[SPEAKER_01]: I wasn't trying to say he didn't belong.
- 53:40[SPEAKER_01]: I just felt like he was being used in the way that other white rappers wasn't being used.
- 53:45[SPEAKER_01]: The Beastie Boys wasn't being used.
- 53:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 53:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 53:48[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I'm saying?
- 53:49[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, I didn't look at them as white rappers.
- 53:51[SPEAKER_01]: I looked at them as dope rappers.
- 53:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 53:53[SPEAKER_01]: I was on deaf channel.
- 53:54[SPEAKER_01]: I was sure for sure.
- 53:54[SPEAKER_01]: Eminem, you count the way they Jimmy and the machine positioned him was the white rapper.
- 54:01[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 54:02[SPEAKER_01]: So, yes, from now when you look at history and history pulls up when we're gone
- 54:07[SPEAKER_01]: They look at hip hop in this time that black men were really striving and who's going to sort all the records and then his face pops.
- 54:16[SPEAKER_01]: That's not good for our history, that's what they did to rock.
- 54:20[SPEAKER_01]: You know, Elvis is the biggest.
- 54:23[SPEAKER_01]: I just didn't want that happen to hip hop and I felt like at that time my platform was the source.
- 54:28[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't have to answer to nobody.
- 54:29[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 54:30[SPEAKER_01]: And I felt like that was a subject that I want to get across.
- 54:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, do you think the other people within the culture do they back you or do they go against you?
- 54:44[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he's a group feathers overnight of all the top guys, you know, it's funny all the top guys was going at each other All the big big big guys, but they wouldn't go with him And they wouldn't because you know going against him will go against Jimmy Irene universal Yeah, nobody want to be blackless.
- 55:00[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I got blacklisted my music our blacklisted rock the party slip slip slip through the cracks Right, you know me god right and that was a hit.
- 55:08[SPEAKER_01]: That was a slip through the cracks.
- 55:09[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that was my billboard hit
- 55:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know, but I could have been a bigger artist if I didn't bring up the M&M situation.
- 55:22[SPEAKER_01]: And I'd just speak it up for hip hop and black people in general.
- 55:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 55:26[SPEAKER_00]: Um, the Xenos always in the headlines.
- 55:30[SPEAKER_00]: What, um, what's the misunderstood about the Xenos?
- 55:35[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's Ben Zeele's not misunderstood.
- 55:38[SPEAKER_01]: I think the people writing the stories and doing the media is they're misunderstood with themselves.
- 55:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 55:43[SPEAKER_01]: That's really I think with a mis-understatement is with themselves.
- 55:47[SPEAKER_01]: You know, because I know exactly who I am and what I stand on, America is not too fond of black men like that.
- 55:56[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, when you stand on business and you're not bowing down and nobody,
- 56:03[SPEAKER_01]: stand on principles and morals as a black man, you will always have problems in this country.
- 56:08[SPEAKER_01]: Sure, sure.
- 56:09[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that's what it is, you know, you meet me, you understand who I am clearly.
- 56:17[SPEAKER_00]: Sure, sure.
- 56:17[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I'm saying?
- 56:18[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you can't meet nobody and just judge them based off of what you see.
- 56:23[SPEAKER_01]: You know, the thing what I think the most disappointing thing of the internet is, music was something that when you listen to an artist back in the day, you get to use your own imagination.
- 56:32[SPEAKER_01]: Your own mind and imagination and thoughts become your own social media and you get to be and do anything you want and that's what grows you as a human being.
- 56:41[SPEAKER_01]: That's being ciphoned away.
- 56:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 56:46[SPEAKER_01]: And it's, you know, everybody, you act like you really know somebody because you see things on the internet.
- 56:50[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 56:51[SPEAKER_01]: You don't know nobody.
- 56:52[SPEAKER_01]: As a founder who they are.
- 56:54[SPEAKER_01]: That has actually messed up the music, the music came up.
- 56:59[SPEAKER_01]: It's given the audience too much opinion and given them too much of your life.
- 57:04[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, yeah, like I'm saying back in the day, I didn't know who these people was.
- 57:09[SPEAKER_01]: You didn't have access to them, but you loved them so much.
- 57:12[SPEAKER_01]: It was a mysterious and used to think who they was.
- 57:14[SPEAKER_01]: Based off of their music, this here is anybody could be a rapper, not based off of just
- 57:22[SPEAKER_01]: running around with dirty drawers.
- 57:23[SPEAKER_01]: I write a wrap around, the wrap on dirty drawers now.
- 57:25[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I'm saying?
- 57:26[SPEAKER_01]: Get a million clicks like, you know, that's not what hip hop was.
- 57:29[SPEAKER_01]: And to be honest with you, hip hop is devalued right now.
- 57:32[SPEAKER_01]: It's taken, I look at it as a female that I once loved that I was gorgeous and loved her and treat her right.
- 57:38[SPEAKER_01]: And all of a sudden, I've seen him in years.
- 57:40[SPEAKER_01]: And now she's been abused.
- 57:41[SPEAKER_01]: I see her on a strobe on the streets as a street walking down.
- 57:46[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just like, wow, look what happened to her.
- 57:47[SPEAKER_01]: That's how I look at hip hop.
- 57:49[SPEAKER_00]: What is it going to take to resurrect life back into hip-hop?
- 57:55[SPEAKER_01]: Older people, you know, I think, you know, us given, first of all, I think we should never, the term why and I never, a day and for sure.
- 58:03[SPEAKER_01]: These are young people when you want to address them as that and these are the young people that have to carry the torch I think this new generation as much as the amazing things they've done I just don't think they have the critical thinking and the maturity to run the game I think if it's some Logical mature people get back to right and gatekeeping running the game Then you know a lot of this foolishness and a lot of this garbage music wouldn't even be around Yeah, that's because that's what it is.
- 58:30[SPEAKER_00]: Do you do you think at some point
- 58:34[SPEAKER_00]: The people will regain the power because even when you think about the songs that are, you know, again, the light, it's still the big corporations, it's still the machines behind that.
- 58:44[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not mad at the songs that are charting that are big songs, I'm mad at the millions of people who just wake up tomorrow and want to be a rapper because they are on social media or just because they have a reality show and they put out a bunch of songs and social media, which is because they got a nice body and you know, that's, I'm not with that.
- 59:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 59:04[SPEAKER_00]: Practice.
- 59:05[SPEAKER_01]: I'd say you can't wrap practice, put work into it, put work into it.
- 59:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 59:09[SPEAKER_01]: I got respect for people who put work into things.
- 59:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 59:11[SPEAKER_01]: We'll pay the dues.
- 59:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 59:13[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 59:13[SPEAKER_01]: It's about paying the dues.
- 59:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 59:14[SPEAKER_01]: It's about that normal.
- 59:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 59:16[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, me, um, especially having family in it, whatever, I love hip-hop.
- 59:22[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm saved my life man, so I take a serious.
- 59:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 59:26[SPEAKER_00]: When people hear the name Benz, you know, 50 years from now, what do you hope they remember that has nothing to do with like controversy?
- 59:36[SPEAKER_01]: I just think it's going to be a different depending on who you are on what race you are at this point.
- 59:40[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I still get a lot of flag from a lot of white people because of the M&M thing.
- 59:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 59:43[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you know, still 23 years later,
- 59:52[SPEAKER_01]: I love I want people I'm more famous and get more and more than I've ever had I can't go nowhere without but the thing is what I'd love so much It's my people.
- 1:00:02[SPEAKER_01]: It's a deal from the struggle from the hood.
- 1:00:04[SPEAKER_01]: They love me, man.
- 1:00:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's it's the grandmother It's the mother.
- 1:00:07[SPEAKER_01]: It's the granddaughter.
- 1:00:09[SPEAKER_01]: I would just go out of jail.
- 1:00:10[SPEAKER_01]: It was the guy who worked for UPS.
- 1:00:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah
- 1:00:12[SPEAKER_01]: Zeno, Benzino, Benzino, they act like they know me.
- 1:00:15[SPEAKER_01]: It's just a different, I can't explain it to you.
- 1:00:18[SPEAKER_01]: Wherever I go, I'm talking to a gas station in the bathroom, who has to run their airport.
- 1:00:23[SPEAKER_01]: It just doesn't matter now.
- 1:00:24[SPEAKER_01]: I'm recognized by everyone.
- 1:00:26[SPEAKER_01]: And any, you know, I get my money doing these walkthroughs in different cities.
- 1:00:31[SPEAKER_01]: And I go by myself, and I go by myself, you know.
- 1:00:35[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I'm saying?
- 1:00:35[SPEAKER_01]: I get picked up at the airport and we go right right to the hood Yeah, I'm in the worst hood.
- 1:00:41[SPEAKER_01]: I don't need no security of body guys.
- 1:00:43[SPEAKER_01]: I see the security sometimes they're extra Like come on, you know what I go look like?
- 1:00:47[SPEAKER_01]: I don't need yeah, yeah, you know so I walk in what a liquor store in the worst hood Yeah, and there's a people like that's and I go in there to get some bloods Yeah, like I love that
- 1:00:56[SPEAKER_01]: Oh man, you know what's on man, what you doing over here, yeah.
- 1:00:59[SPEAKER_01]: I love that, bro.
- 1:01:00[SPEAKER_01]: I've seen everything.
- 1:01:01[SPEAKER_01]: I've seen I've been through death and destruction a lot of times.
- 1:01:05[SPEAKER_01]: I've lost a lot of guys.
- 1:01:07[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 1:01:07[SPEAKER_01]: I've been through a lot of trauma.
- 1:01:09[SPEAKER_01]: So you know nothing Nothing there's nothing that
- 1:01:16[SPEAKER_00]: There's nothing that's gonna keep me from going anywhere, being around anything because I come with love and peace and smiles, and I get it back, that got to be like, I don't know if it's a project thing or a street thing, but I'm not famous, but same thing, when I go to conferences, I grew up in the projects, I'm from Harlem, so I grew up in the projects.
- 1:01:37[SPEAKER_00]: So I feel weird, I wanna be with the people in a lot of times, people who watch the podcast, people who made no me,
- 1:01:45[SPEAKER_00]: They, they look and they like, oh, you hear what us, but it's not.
- 1:01:48[SPEAKER_00]: We're still the best though, I feel like.
- 1:01:50[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm glad you say that because that's, that's because wherever you was naturally born and naturally came up with your environment, it's the same thing with animals, we're really a species.
- 1:01:59[SPEAKER_01]: Animals are a species, humans are a species.
- 1:02:02[SPEAKER_01]: We have similarities with animals.
- 1:02:05[SPEAKER_01]: They feel most comfortable with their environment when they first was.
- 1:02:10[SPEAKER_01]: If an animal grows up in Africa, now there's something he's in a fucking zoo.
- 1:02:16[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to get this son, whatever, but he's not, you let him back in Africa.
- 1:02:20[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to be like, oh, yeah, he's not saying, that's what it is, man, no matter what.
- 1:02:24[SPEAKER_01]: Let me tell you, man, we are the same everywhere.
- 1:02:27[SPEAKER_01]: Only thing changes is maybe how we dress,
- 1:02:31[SPEAKER_01]: how we talk, the slaying in our voice.
- 1:02:34[SPEAKER_01]: And I die like other than that.
- 1:02:36[SPEAKER_01]: We all the same man.
- 1:02:37[SPEAKER_01]: We just people trying to get by and make it to another day and pay bills.
- 1:02:41[SPEAKER_01]: And when we look at entertainment, this is the little bit of happiness that we're getting in our life.
- 1:02:45[SPEAKER_01]: So when people see me, the first thing they do is light the fuck up.
- 1:02:49[SPEAKER_01]: They light up.
- 1:02:50[SPEAKER_01]: So man, I'm man, listen man, I ain't never turned down a pitch.
- 1:02:53[SPEAKER_01]: I think thousands of pitches a year with everybody.
- 1:02:56[SPEAKER_01]: And I never ever turned down a picture.
- 1:02:58[SPEAKER_01]: It's a blessing.
- 1:02:59[SPEAKER_01]: It's a so, you know, I shit.
- 1:03:01[SPEAKER_00]: And I mean, I mean, when you walked in here, I was so happy to see you because your energy was so good, though, right?
- 1:03:07[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, man, yeah, I should.
- 1:03:09[SPEAKER_00]: And I also believe, because, you know, I mean, like I said, I grew up in the hood.
- 1:03:15[SPEAKER_00]: I always say we're like, especially in the night I grew up in the night.
- 1:03:17[SPEAKER_00]: So in the night, it's like, it's dull, yes.
- 1:03:20[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I woke up with Jimmy's very, very early.
- 1:03:23[SPEAKER_00]: I saw dead bodies at 12.13.
- 1:03:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's about a time I'm saying normal, right?
- 1:03:27[SPEAKER_00]: Normal.
- 1:03:28[SPEAKER_00]: But by the time I said, I feel like I've been through life.
- 1:03:31[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I feel like a 30.
- 1:03:32[SPEAKER_00]: All of us.
- 1:03:33[SPEAKER_00]: All right, yeah.
- 1:03:33[SPEAKER_00]: And we can't take that for granted.
- 1:03:35[SPEAKER_00]: It's not normal.
- 1:03:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:03:37[SPEAKER_00]: which is why like like I'm 45's that 45 now I'm happy all the time.
- 1:03:42[SPEAKER_00]: I'm the big jolly dude because any difference from that is beautiful.
- 1:03:46[SPEAKER_01]: That's how everybody should feel, man.
- 1:03:48[SPEAKER_01]: It has nothing to do with money.
- 1:03:49[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I'm saying as long as as long as you're in a great environment around positive people like I said the main things, heat, air condition water to to hot water, food.
- 1:04:00[SPEAKER_01]: There were a few things.
- 1:04:01[SPEAKER_01]: Those are a bad nice bed,
- 1:04:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and you got that patient, it's a virtue, elevation is a process.
- 1:04:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, for sure.
- 1:04:10[SPEAKER_00]: You got that patient, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:04:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, for sure.
- 1:04:13[SPEAKER_01]: You know, faith in yourself is non-negotiable.
- 1:04:15[SPEAKER_01]: You got to have it.
- 1:04:16[SPEAKER_01]: Not for sure.
- 1:04:16[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you can move mountains with it, man.
- 1:04:18[SPEAKER_01]: It'll happen.
- 1:04:19[SPEAKER_01]: It's just going to take time, man.
- 1:04:21[SPEAKER_01]: God opens up invisible doors all the time.
- 1:04:24[SPEAKER_01]: But if you're as don't see him or if you ain't ready to go, go into him, that's on you.
- 1:04:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:04:30[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I'm saying?
- 1:04:30[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you got to take responsibility for you, man.
- 1:04:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, not for sure.
- 1:04:34[SPEAKER_00]: For sure.
- 1:04:35[SPEAKER_00]: Speaking of legends, because I mean, you, you, you know, mentioned, you know, relationship with Stevie J, legends, things of that nature.
- 1:04:41[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you think about, like, what's happening with Diddy, right?
- 1:04:44[SPEAKER_00]: Like,
- 1:04:46[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, when he comes home, he'll be home soon.
- 1:04:49[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:04:49[SPEAKER_00]: It's a half way house next month, I heard.
- 1:04:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:04:51[SPEAKER_00]: When he comes home, like, wish it thoughts about how he's going to be remembered.
- 1:04:55[SPEAKER_00]: His legacy.
- 1:04:56[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, man.
- 1:04:56[SPEAKER_01]: Listen, man, did he's going to be celebrated?
- 1:04:58[SPEAKER_01]: Mm-hmm.
- 1:04:59[SPEAKER_01]: There's going to be some people who's going to be upset.
- 1:05:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:05:01[SPEAKER_01]: But he'll be celebrated.
- 1:05:02[SPEAKER_01]: That's just how we are as black people.
- 1:05:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:05:04[SPEAKER_01]: We forgive.
- 1:05:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:05:05[SPEAKER_01]: Success makes us forgive.
- 1:05:07[SPEAKER_01]: Mm-hmm.
- 1:05:08[SPEAKER_01]: That's the group.
- 1:05:08[SPEAKER_01]: That's that's our culture's greatest attribute.
- 1:05:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:05:16[SPEAKER_01]: And I hope that never stops.
