- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it's a Wednesday.
- 0:15It's the 27th of November and I am delighted to share this
- 0:19moment with you today. I hope you're going well.
- 0:22I hope that the end of the year is treating you kindly, that you
- 0:26were getting a little bit of a moment to reflect on the
- 0:29glorious, glorious time ahead as we celebrate the birth of Jesus
- 0:33to come. But that's a little while off
- 0:35yet. There still seems like a lot of
- 0:37life to be live between between then and now, right?
- 0:40And as we are reading through the book of Acts, we are now
- 0:44coming into a really interesting part of the story where it seems
- 0:47like there is a lot of focus on the church spreading into
- 0:52Gentile territory and it not just being a religion for
- 0:56converted Jews, but for Gentiles as well.
- 0:59And if you cast your mind right back to chapter 1 to the
- 1:02beginning of the book, you'll remember that Luke was writing
- 1:05to his friend Theophilus. And Theophilus was certainly not
- 1:08Jewish. He was a Gentile.
- 1:10And so if you think this book is being written to a Gentile
- 1:14believer, and one of Luke's goals in writing this book is to
- 1:17make sure that his audience really understands that this
- 1:21Church of Jesus is not just a Jewish movement, but it is for
- 1:26everyone, particularly for his friend Theophilus and everyone
- 1:29like him who is not Jewish. And well, that's me.
- 1:33And I'm assuming that's a lot of you as well.
- 1:35So this book is written to us to say that God's church that began
- 1:40in that part of the world is certainly not an exclusive one
- 1:43for anyone, people, group and everyone.
- 1:46Everyone is welcome at God's table.
- 1:49All we need to do is have faith in what Jesus has done for us.
- 1:54So this is a blowing open wide of this Church of God's people
- 1:59so that everyone can participate.
- 2:02So let us hear the story about them going back to head office
- 2:05in Jerusalem and saying things are changing, get on board and
- 2:09how they manage that together. As we read together Acts chapter
- 2:1315, while Paul and Barnabas were at
- 2:25Antioch of Syria, some men from Judea arrived and began to teach
- 2:29the believers. Unless you were circumcised, as
- 2:33required by the Law of Moses, you cannot be saved.
- 2:37Paul and Barnabas disagreed with them, arguing vehemently.
- 2:41Finally, the church decided to send Paul and Barnabas to
- 2:44Jerusalem, accompanied by some local believers, to talk to the
- 2:48apostles and elders about this question.
- 2:51The church sent the delegates to Jerusalem, and they stopped
- 2:54along the way in Phoenicia and Samaria to visit the believers.
- 2:58They told them, much to everyone's joy, that the
- 3:01Gentiles too were being converted.
- 3:04When they arrived in Jerusalem, Barnabas and Paul were welcomed
- 3:08by the whole church, including the apostles and elders.
- 3:12They reported everything God had done through them.
- 3:15But then some of the believers who belonged to the sect of the
- 3:18Pharisees stood up and insisted that Gentile converts must be
- 3:23circumcised and required to follow the Law of Moses.
- 3:27So the apostles and elders met together to resolve this issue.
- 3:31At the meeting, after a long discussion, Peter stood and
- 3:35addressed them as follows. Brothers, you all know that God
- 3:40chose me from among you some time ago to preach to the
- 3:44Gentiles so that they could hear the good news and believe.
- 3:48God knows people's hearts, and He confirmed that He accepts
- 3:52Gentiles by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He did to us.
- 3:57He made no distinction between us and them, for He cleansed
- 4:01their hearts through faith. So why are you now challenging
- 4:04God by burdening the Gentile believers with a yoke that
- 4:08neither we nor our ancestors were able to bear?
- 4:12We believe that we are all saved the same way by the undeserved
- 4:17grace of the Lord Jesus. Everyone listened quietly as
- 4:21Barnabas and Paul told about the miraculous signs and wonders God
- 4:26had done through them among the Gentiles.
- 4:29When they had finished, James stood and said, Brothers, listen
- 4:35to me. Peter has told you about the
- 4:37time God first visited the Gentiles to take from them a
- 4:41people for himself. And this conversation of
- 4:45Gentiles is exactly what the prophets predicted as it is
- 4:49written afterward, I will return and restore the fallen House of
- 4:55David. I will rebuild its ruins and
- 4:58restore it so that the rest of humanity might seek the Lord,
- 5:03including the Gentiles, all those I have called to be mine.
- 5:08The Lord has spoken, He who made these things known so long ago.
- 5:14And so my judgement is that we should not make it difficult for
- 5:19the Gentiles who are turning to God.
- 5:21Instead, we should write and tell them to abstain from eating
- 5:26food offered to idols, from sexual immorality, from eating
- 5:30the meat of strangled animals, and from consuming blood.
- 5:35For these laws of Moses have been preached in Jewish
- 5:38synagogues in every city, on every Sabbath for many
- 5:42generations. Then the apostles and elders,
- 5:47together with the whole church in Jerusalem, chose delegates
- 5:51and they sent them to Antioch of Syria with Paul and Barnabas to
- 5:55report on this decision. The men chosen were two of the
- 5:59church leaders, Judas, also known as Barsabbas and Silas.
- 6:05This is the letter they took with them.
- 6:08This letter is from the apostles and elders, your brothers in
- 6:11Jerusalem. It is written to the Gentile
- 6:14believers in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia.
- 6:18Greetings. We understand that some men from
- 6:21here have troubled you and upset you with their teaching, but we
- 6:25did not send them. So we decided, having come to
- 6:29complete agreement, to send you official representatives, along
- 6:33with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, who have risked their
- 6:37lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 6:40We are sending Judas and Silas to confirm what we have decided
- 6:44concerning your question, for it seemed good to the Holy Spirit
- 6:50and to us to lay no greater burden on you than these few
- 6:54requirements. You must abstain from eating
- 6:57food offered to idols, from consuming blood or the meat of
- 7:01strangled animals, and from sexual immorality.
- 7:05If you do this, you will do well.
- 7:08Farewell. The messengers went at once to
- 7:12Antioch, where they called the general meeting of the believers
- 7:15and delivered the letter. And there was great joy
- 7:19throughout the church that day as they read this encouraging
- 7:22message. Then Judas and Silas, both being
- 7:26prophets, spoke at length to the believers, encouraging and
- 7:30strengthening their faith. They stayed for a while, and
- 7:34then the believers sent them back to the church in Jerusalem
- 7:37with the blessing of peace. Paul and Barnabas stayed in
- 7:41Antioch. They and many others taught and
- 7:44preached the word of the Lord there.
- 7:46After some time, Paul said to Barnabas, Let's go back and
- 7:50visit each city where we previously preached the word of
- 7:53the Lord, and see how the new believers are doing.
- 7:57Barnabas agreed and wanted to take along John Mark, but Paul
- 8:01disagreed strongly. Since John Mark had deserted
- 8:04them in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in their
- 8:07work, their disagreement was so sharp that they separated
- 8:12Barnabas, took John Mark with him, and sailed the Cypress.
- 8:17Paul chose Silas, and as he left, the believers entrusted
- 8:21him to the Lord's gracious care. Then he travelled throughout
- 8:25Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches there.
- 8:29Ah Jesus, you know only too well
- 8:43the trap that we often fall into.
- 8:46That thinking that the old rules still apply.
- 8:50That thinking that it's up to us to do better and to do more and
- 8:55to try harder. And that through this effort of
- 8:58ours, we will impress you enough for your saving grace to be
- 9:03lavished on us. But Lord, let that lie never
- 9:07take root in our heart, because it's not following all the rules
- 9:12that gains your favour. No, it is Your love, Your love
- 9:17that is so hard for us to get our heads around that You just
- 9:22choose to lavish on us. It is Your grace, completely
- 9:28undeserved but given freely to us, that makes us acceptable in
- 9:34Your sight. My Lord, I pray that we would
- 9:39not feel that we are more special than anyone else because
- 9:43we have this love, but that we would live out this love and
- 9:48share it with those around us so that everyone can get a taste of
- 9:52your incredible, undeserved grace.
- 9:58Thank you that you give this to us and Lord, continue to
- 10:02transform our hearts so that Your grace can flow through us
- 10:06into this broken world that so desperately needs not only to
- 10:10know You, but to feel your love. So Lord, be with us.
- 10:16Continue your work in US as we live in gratitude to you for all
- 10:22you've done for us. And we pray this in your
- 10:25incredible name, Amen.
