[upbeat music] Ow. Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow. Ouch.
• 0:17
Something happened to my finger [laughs] in the shop today and now it's got a little cutty thing on it and it hurts. It didn't trip the button though, that's good. Right? No.
• 0:24
[laughs] Little finger's all dangling down on there or whatnot. Uh, hey, everybody. Welcome to Full Spectrum Cycling. This is show number 244 currently that you are listening and/or viewing to.
• 0:38
The two four four, woo-hoo, woo, woo. Uh, you will notice that the beer seat is unoccupied by Mr. T Berger this week. Apparently, the plague is going through his house.
• 0:49
He'll have been remotely shaking up the beers in the cooler. Right, right, and not the, not necessarily the, the current plague, but a, a plague of some- Yeah, the l- the, uh, Petri dish that is having a young child.
• 1:04
Oh, God, those days were so fun. [laughs] And then some- Well, I work on a fricking campus, which is its own... And he works on campus, so I think it's a combo platter that he's- Right... dealing with on that.
• 1:13
And they have their, they have their youth in the daycare program at said campus. Yes. So. Yeah, so it's all- There's a lot of... I'm gonna-... baked in together. Shift. Freaking Matt, bro.
• 1:28
[laughs] S- Supreme Court my ear. Come to Butthead. [laughs] Uh, boy, it's been sort of the rollercoaster-y thing in a couple different ways this week, weather-wise for one. Oh, yeah, blustery. It was blustery.
• 1:42
It was- It was warm, then it was blustery, now it's cool. I don't know how to dress for this ever. Also, the, uh, the crypto market boy up and down, up and down.
• 1:52
I got, I got a, I got a good time to go, like, "I'm getting out of this one," and it was like, yeah, perfect timing, and then it went... [imitates crashing] Oh.
• 2:00
So other people thought similar, but the, that being said, Bitcoin reached an all-time high today. Then FacePlace took a poop on everybody. Massive. Massive dumping.
• 2:11
How can I take pictures of my food on the Instagrams and have everyone comment on it? I wonder how many Threads people were all pissed off. [laughs] It's like the eight people that use it or whatever.
• 2:22
Yeah, well, Threads is like, [coughs] and myself included, after the T. Rump got elected, "I'm moving to Canada." Nobody moved to Canada, or few did. [coughs] The, the stalwart few- Yeah... did it...
• 2:36
something of that nature. And it, it- And so it was like when Elon took over Twitter, then rebranded it, and everyone's like, "I'm going to Threads," and- Or other things. There's a- Yeah, like-...
• 2:47
there's a couple other ones... yeah. But did they though? Not really. [laughs] No. Me included. That's what I'm just saying. I'm just glad they're not calling it X formerly Twitter.
• 2:57
Now they're just calling it X, you know? Why? Yeah. Everybody knows and stuff anyway. But it's still, like, anytime I have it in the fricking browser address bar, it still says twitter.com.
• 3:06
It doesn't even, like, kick it to- Oh... that domain. I did not know that. So kiss my ass. Shows how often I use it. I didn't use it before. I'm not using it now. [laughs] Such an idiot. It's ghost, yeah. Such a twit.
• 3:19
Ha, get it? Yeah. [laughs] Whoa, what's in this? That's amazing.
• 3:24
Uh, we'll get to that in a little bit, but, uh, before we get to that, there's just a couple things we could go through about Milwaukee Minute here- Mm-hmm... or five or so.
• 3:32
[singing] We, we, meaning I, being me, that is as I am- The royal we... [laughs] had confirmed with Ron at Amorphic that indeed, August, or August, April, [laughs] it's April, folks. April 2nd will be our, our partay.
• 3:48
Truly Fools Day. [laughs] Which is within a few days of our semi-10 year anniversary sort of thing, and that would be directly south of our current location in the podcast MKE studio
• 4:03
over at Amorphic Brewing in the back room, which is... It's a nice l- it's a nice party place back in there. The one with the, the stage? Right. Or the- Yeah... the landing that's a stage area.
• 4:14
And the, and the penny-farthing that is [laughs] we, we'll play. That is- We're, we're, we're kind of expecting Mark Peterson to call in tonight, so hopefully we can talk penny-farthings with him.
• 4:23
But, uh, there's a story behind the one that's also in the, uh, back room at Amorphic, and I have sent out word to people to do entertaining.
• 4:36
So we- we'll get a schedule closer to the date, so but just mark it on your calendar if you're around here.
• 4:41
I'll, we'll be doing a Facebook event in- once they're back up and running and we can trust them not to screw shit up. And, uh, April 2nd, somewhere around, uh, 6:00 PM would be a good time to do.
• 4:52
We may even do a live show for your entertainment pleasure. Watch the magic. Maybe. You can, it could, you can see it happen live. You can smell it. Maybe. Smell it. [laughs] Possibly. Uh, what else we got going?
• 5:06
Hey, hey, today, today I should have picked up, uh, Dave Slobowski's Omnium cargo bike, meeting Brandon from down there in Chicago, getting this. I'm excited about these things. I haven't looked at it yet.
• 5:20
I think it's- But-... worth looking at. I'll have a link- That's on me. I'll have a link in the show notes. It's not a low-slung thing like a, like a Bullet. It's more of a...
• 5:28
It, it, reports are it rides much more like a normal, quote-unquote, bike, so. Huh. And, and Dave is doing a very specific use, which is dog packing, because Cowboy's getting older, so. Gotcha, gotcha.
• 5:41
Yeah, the, you, we'll have a, we'll have a, hopefully a video on it when we build it and stuff and- [laughs]... all sorts of goodness. I just can't get over...
• 5:49
Well, I mean, when I won my backpack was the cargo bike bingo from when, uh, argh, what was the name of the damn shop? In Walker's Point. Third Eye Blind? Man, you know what I'm talking about.
• 6:02
I always wanna say Truly Spoken, and I know it's not Truly Spoken. No, no, Truly Spoken still lives. Yeah, it was the one that was across from Savatic- Oh-... and the-... if you went into the- Ar, it's driving me nuts...
• 6:10
if you went into the other room on the shop, looked at the Bullet that's in there, you'd probably see the name on there. Mm-hmm But- The one with Big Bird in it. Yes. Okay.
• 6:19
And they, and it was a bingo thing and okay, boom. And I, I, I won whatever, and I won that Banjo Brothers backpack, and I'm still, well, using a vari- a variance of it, but all the same,
• 6:36
part of that was having to ride cargo bikes. And I had a Tony Burger, Burger Tony, kinda in the front of not a Bullet, but the same idea, the front- Sure, sure...
• 6:49
cargoing, and I almost put him into the, uh, antique store [laughs] that was- [laughs]... right there in front of Radio Milwaukee. Was it outside or inside? Outside. [laughs] Oh, okay.
• 6:59
Well, I, you know, I don't know how many- Well, they had the, they had the big-ass garage doors open, and it would've gone inside, but [laughs] I mean, it was my first time on a cargo bike- Yeah...
• 7:07
in the- It, it takes-... saddle at all... it, on a, on one of those type of bikes, it takes just a couple of minutes. Basically, you, you wanna look forward, not down at the, like- Yeah, yeah...
• 7:16
the front wheel or whatever. It's snowboarding and skiing. Look where you're going, not where you are- Yeah, right...
• 7:20
or just the, the- Or, or with the, with the T Burger in the, you know- Yeah, well it's hard not to see a damn T Burger when he's... Well, yeah, when he was [laughs]
• 7:28
complaining about Daniel squirming around on the back, uh, of his steed, I'm going like, "Yeah, you were squirming around the front of mine [laughs], doing the same thing, almost ramming into antiques."
• 7:40
[laughs] It all go, it all comes full circle, I tell you. It's not a bull in a china shop. [laughs] It's a cargo bike [laughs] in an antique shop. Yeah. Oh, man. I didn't...
• 7:50
So I, I don't know, did you put the story on Ringo on here? Yeah, yeah. That it, it,
• 7:56
it was done in like last year in November or something like that, but it popped up on a couple occasions through the social media feeds of the world. Yeah, I saw it this morning- But the-...
• 8:05
and I thought, um, somebody commented that he used to, like, collect stones and give them to people. I'm like, "Wrong guy. Wrong one-name guy. That was Marco. This is Ringo." Ah. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. The, the- Yeah...
• 8:18
now deceased- Oh, yeah... Marco. Oh. [laughs] Yeah. He used to give you the, the, the stone. The BBC Marco, yeah. Yeah, BBC Marco- Yeah... with stones. Oh, yeah. And I'm like, "It's not Ringo, man."
• 8:26
When he would go on vacation- It's a, it's a different guy... when he would go on vacation and told Carney [laughs] to water his plants, and he left like little stations of his urine [laughs] by each of the plants.
• 8:37
Yeah, I don't know. Plants don't... I don't know if they- They eat his urine, apparently. I don't know if they... Maybe certain plants like urine. [laughs] It's acidic or whatever. But he was a cat like that.
• 8:46
Not, not sure. But yeah, he was, he was a cool dude. Uh, man. And yeah, and, uh, Lunz was talking that, uh, he got him a bike at some point on one comment somewhere.
• 8:56
Yeah, many, many years ago when he was still at Bike Smith's, I believe, so it's- Yeah, that's why I was like-... been a long time. It, it was a time machine story-ish.
• 9:03
It's worth a read if you like, uh, characters from your city. You prob- wherever you are, you probably have one similar. We've got the Milvereen, we've got the Ringo.
• 9:12
You know, there's, there's stalwarts that are very noticeable if you are- [laughs]... in your city at any time. Uh,
• 9:22
hey, I was, uh, I was putting these show notes in the show notes, the Google Doc show notes and- [laughs]...
• 9:27
noticing, I didn't know if it had anything to do with, uh, any, the in- general internet slowdown today, yesterday, Tuesday, but it seems to be taking an awful long time, and I did a little research on how long it's been out there, and it's every show since we started, so, or whatever, since we started using this.
• 9:45
It's been- Yeah... many years, and it's 328 pages that are trying to load into the browser, and it's like- It belongs in a museum. [laughs] Well, I'm gonna, I might just do... I don't know.
• 9:54
I, see, I wonder if it will, if, if I can make a WordPress post, just copy and paste this into a post with 75,000 words or whatever it is. [laughs] I'm sure. Why not? I mean- Well... I don't know.
• 10:06
We'll- Well, how many- We'll, we'll-... pages did you say? 328 pages. Shit yeah. [laughs] Shit yeah. As one post. No problem. No problem whatsoever. We'll give it a go.
• 10:15
But it was going slow, 'cause I thought it was my phone because I normally have a potato phone that don't do nothing. Right on. But ta-da. It, it is because [laughs] of its density. Damn it, Google- All right...
• 10:27
failing everybody. I got a thing. I gotta do a deal here. Mm-hmm. I got a, I got a green, I got a green thing. I'm gonna push on the green button. There we go. Green light go. Welcome to the radio program caller.
• 10:37
Who do we have on the line? Hi. Uh, this is Mark Peterson from Ogden, Utah. How are you guys doing today? Dandy. And yourself? Fantastic. Just watching Life Cycles. I forgot how good a movie this is. What? That?
• 10:53
Is it a s- is it a movie about cycling? Yeah, bike... It's a bicycling movie called Life Cycles. It's several years old, but it's just really cool movie. What- Oh, yeah. Is it on one of our streaming channels?
• 11:07
Um, let me get you some more information. Uh, directed by Derek Fren- Frank, Frank Loski and Ryan Gibb. Um, I, I don't... It's... I can't believe you guys haven't seen it.
• 11:25
It's like a, it's a movie about mountain biking that's filmed in, at the level of, like, a National Geographic, uh, project. Huh. It's just incredible photography, amazing music. It's just beautiful. Huh.
• 11:39
Is it on DVD, video VCR, or is it streaming on Netflix or some other online service? Oh, you can just go onto YouTube. Tube. Oh. Oh, gotcha.
• 11:49
Yeah, you can just go on YouTube and just put in Life Cycles and you'll find it. I always- Yeah... forget about YouTube because I only recently started paying for it to not have ads, and- Oh. [laughs] I d- Oh, yeah...
• 11:58
I don't normally think of it. It's like, well, I really wanted to see X movie, and it's not on any f- trying to find one on any streaming service is a, a exercise in futility, but it's, I think- Yeah...
• 12:09
they're all on YouTube at some point. True, true. Pretty much. Pretty much, and even with ads.
• 12:13
I mean, I was hunting for, speaking of bike, bicycling movies, Pee-wee's Big Adventure, and I was like, "Where can I find Pee-wee's Big Adventure? It's gotta be on one of these damn platforms." And sure enough, YouTube.
• 12:24
W- free with ads, but- Yep... it, uh- Yep... maybe that's all you need. Yep. Whatever, I have to, you know, I have to go get a beer, I have to go to the bathroom. Gotta make, uh- Yeah...
• 12:33
gotta, gotta, gotta address my paella, things of that nature. Works for me. [laughs] So h- how you guys doing, man? What's the weather like out there? As far, like out here, this winter has sucked.
• 12:44
Like, it's been a brown winter. I've only gotten to ride in snow probably a handful of times, and that was over just a couple of days 'cause it snowed and then it melted. Yep.
• 12:53
So please tell me you guys are riding in snow. [laughs] Negatory, good buddy. I think, I think we're... I don't know if we're in a similar boat, but heck it, we had an all-time high- Yeah...
• 13:02
several days this month, I think. It's, it, it's- Last week we hit a 74 as a high. Yeah, and 74 degrees in February- Holy shit... in Wisconsin. And then the next day it was down to 24. Wow.
• 13:13
[laughs] There was, yeah, there was- It was like a 50, blip... yeah, 58-degree temperature drop in one day. Yeah. Uh, and ver- no snow. Yeah.
• 13:20
But, but here, the icing on the cake might be that the lake also has gotten, like Big Lake Michigan, no ice on it. Uh, and that means it should be evaporating faster, which means we should have more beach
• 13:35
come summertime. So- Mm... where we didn't get any snow, and they didn't even get snow in, in northern Wisconsin. The Birkie, you know, ski race was- Oh, yeah, they had to-... bad. The- [clears throat]...
• 13:45
the, uh, the Fat Bike Birkie, which is coming up- For real? Yeah. Yeah, they had to, uh, they got, um, uh, they had to manufacture snow. Yes, but they- Like, this-...
• 13:53
could only do, like a 10K loop, and it was- Oh, is that it?... it was bad news. And then the Fat Bike Birkie, which is- Don't you guys get just buried in snow? Not where we are, but up there they usually do.
• 14:03
Uh, Fat Bike Birkie is coming up this weekend, which is March 9th or whatever the date of the actual Fat Bike Birkie is.
• 14:12
I think that, I mean, they, lots of people have canceled, lots of people aren't going 'cause there's no snow, so. Uh, that said- All right...
• 14:19
you can still ride your fat bike anywhere you want, any time you want, and you could go do the Fat Bike Birkie, although it will be more like a Chequame- a Chequamegon, you know, fat tire 40 race on a fat bike
• 14:32
'cause there's no snow. Yep, yep. But the, the course doesn't care. Well, that's fun. Yeah. Um, yeah, our buddy, our buddy- Yeah, it's still fun. Right on. Our buddy Dave up there has a- Yeah...
• 14:42
Airbnb, and the people that he had, uh, canceled for this, they said, "Well, blah, blah, blah." I think they should've just gone up there. It's a kick-ass place to stay anyway, so. Yeah.
• 14:54
But, uh, yeah, so, so no- Well, so, um-... no snow for you either. Well, yeah, I know, no snow, and it's been bumming me out. It's like, it's, it's kinda depressing when it's just gray and cold and kind of wet. Hmm.
• 15:08
[laughs] Yeah. And windy. [laughs] And [laughs] yeah, for sure. Yeah, windy. Windy, for sure. Yeah. So I've been- Yeah, lame, lame. But yeah, go ahead. Go ahead.
• 15:17
I was gonna say, I've been f- uh, following your posts on Facebook as s- some of us are want to do. [laughs] I know I'm just playing- Uh-... with this box of beer here, which we, we- [laughs]...
• 15:27
we'll get to the top of the hill in a second. [laughs] But, um, I was interested to see that your- [laughs]... your banana seat spring saddle, uh, project is not dead. Yes. It's not dead. Excellent. Excellent.
• 15:39
I, you know what- No, I, I, I've been... Go ahead.
• 15:42
Well, I was just gonna say, I mean, the people, I, I have, uh, pirated a couple of those pictures because we don't have your, uh, glorious visage on our video podcast this time. We're working on that.
• 15:53
Someday we'll have- Oh... we'll have everybody on.
• 15:55
But, uh, I did take a couple of your, uh, your pictures of your saddles and whatnot, and maybe I'll intersperse them through the video so they know what we're talking about.
• 16:03
But when I first saw the front of it- Oh, cool... I, I thought it was like, did you repurpose, like, a titanium w- water bottle cage, or what is that thing?
• 16:10
[laughs] Because if, if, uh- It's, it's actually the, it's a spring seat, a spring for a seat.
• 16:17
Uh, it, it hooks to the top of the seat post, just in a double-rail clamp configuration, and then it goes up and it has a double-double rail clamp on it that hooks onto your seat and to the top of those rails.
• 16:27
And what it does is it's supposed to create, like a, a spring, like a, just a springer that you could put on any seat off the seat post into a twin rail type seat configuration.
• 16:38
Well, when I saw this, I thought, "There's my front pivot," because the front, the, on the banana seat springer that I wanted to do, I was forcing a pivot through a hard connection where I'm clamping down on a post.
• 16:50
It's not meant to rotate. You're kinda forcing it to rotate. It's not freely moving. And I, I, uh, was thinking about bearings, about doing this, that, the other thing, just getting overly complicated.
• 17:01
Then I saw this thing and I was like, "Oh my God, that is the answer. This thing is gonna be plush." And when does, when does it, uh, actually get its first ride?
• 17:11
Um, um, I don't know about ride, but I'm hoping to mock it up tomorrow and actually put my weight on it and see what it feels like. That sounds, uh, imminent, then. Yeah, yeah.
• 17:23
Well, I mean, it'll just be the metal pan, and I, I'll probably ride it around a little bit.
• 17:27
I'll take pictures of it and stuff when I do it, but I just wanna see how it feels, 'cause I had to order special springs to get the spring rate right on the little old shocks that I'm putting on there.
• 17:38
And so I wanted it to feel kinda like, you know the, the old Springer seats from, like, Schwinn's and stuff back in the day, how you'd get on 'em? They'd be very comfortable but, you know, a little mushy.
• 17:49
Like, they l- just a little bit of squishy squish everywhere you go, right? Right.
• 17:54
Well, I wanted that, I wanted that kind of performance, but with a banana seat it's so long that w- you get that long, you get all this torsional, uh, twisting motion that makes it feel weird, like the bike's a giant noodle.
• 18:07
Like, the whole bike starts feeling like a noodle because you control a lot of the bikes through your butt. You know, bike grip and the seat? Yeah, for sure. You, you put a lot of stability into the bike, right?
• 18:17
So, um, when I found this configuration, it got rid of a pivot up at the front and made it just a, a spring-loaded front kinda curve that's a solid, solid connection- So the front end will move around.
• 18:30
I can hard clamp it up at the front, and then my springs in the back that have an adjusted spring rate, this thing should be like riding on a cloud, man. [laughs] That sounds- But after I- That sounds encouraging...
• 18:42
after I get the proto, like it, uh, mocked up for the first time, then I'm gonna weld in X bracing underneath it so I don't have another banana seat fold in half, then custom spray it copper, and then I'll be wrapping, uh, my caterpillar custom seat cover on it.
• 18:58
Let's see. You're, you're putting a lot of time into this thing. It's, I, I'm sure it's gonna be worth it in the end. It's like a vision. It's like one of those things, like an OCD, once you see it, you have to do it.
• 19:08
[laughs] You just have to make it. Right on. Oh, there it is. Yeah. By cracky, I think we've ridden this seat for a little bit, and [bell ringing] we are now at the top of the hill. Woo-hoo.
• 19:20
I understand you went out to get, to get- What are you guys drinking? We're doing, this is a Jay Cave find. This is, uh... See, last week I said Deschutes, and I was wrong. [laughs] Twice. Wrong, wrong.
• 19:31
[laughs] It was, uh, New Belgium last week. But this is Deschutes this week, Fresh Haze IPA. Uh, it is a- Nice. Nice... it is a juicy, it's a juicy, hazy 6.5%.
• 19:42
Deschutes, which I don't think they make a bad beer at Deschutes. No. And at least of what I've had, they really don't do a poor job there. When you get the Bends in Oregon. Yeah, so that's what we've got.
• 19:52
How about your d- your own self? No, I'm going old school. P- uh, PBR, just like in my, uh- [laughs]... penny-farthing, uh, video. Nice.
• 20:01
Um, w- yeah, PBR is, like, usually a staple in the fridge, but it's not in there right now. [laughs] I was looking for Lone Star. I was looking for, like- Grain-... Grain Belt, Lone Star...
• 20:11
yeah, they w- they didn't even have the, you know, the, the go-to dad beers I would go to. Right?
• 20:16
So you mentioned penny-farthing briefly just this second ago, and I was, uh, we, before you were on air, we were talking about our, our upcoming- [laughs]...
• 20:25
Apr- April 2nd, uh, 10, 10-year anniversary party next door to Morphic, and there's a penny-farthing over there, too.
• 20:33
I don't think it's quite as authentic as the one that you demonstrated so skillfully [laughs] in your videos, but it- [laughs]... but it is, um, it was, I think, a Coker or somebody made one, Coker.
• 20:45
You know, they make the 36-inch bikes. Yeah. Like, this is a, a 36-inch penny-farthing, and our good friend Dave almost ended up in the hospital riding it.
• 20:55
[laughs] And then because he wanted more people to go in the hospital, he gave it to us to mess around with, and then I said, "No, [laughs] I'm not going to the hospital, so I'm not riding that thing."
• 21:05
[laughs] But, uh- Didn't, uh, DiNardo take a stab at it or- Some-... or was he just mentally gonna take a stab at it? People have taken s- I don't know.
• 21:11
Peop- and it's sitting over there by the stage where either DJs and/or bands will be performing, just m- Mocking... visually mocking people to make them wanna [laughs] come and ride it and throw them on the ground.
• 21:25
[laughs] So. You know, it was way easier to ride than I thought it was gonna be. Um, what you guys didn't get to see was the very first swing I took at it, I rode it. It, it didn't kick me off or nothing.
• 21:34
I got up, I rode it, and it was just fine. But, um, you know, where's the fun in that, right? [laughs] Like, you're just riding around. You're on it. Yay. So I set out to create some drama, so I kind of intentionally
• 21:49
wrecked a couple times, just to see if I could get off that bike with the same kinda skill I can get off other bikes, and it turns out I can, except for on the way down, I punted the frame with my right shin.
• 22:01
Oh, my God, I got a mouse that was an inch and a half tall. [laughs] Yeah, were you trying to do, like, the leg over the handlebar thing or something or...? Yeah, yeah, I wanted to go full OTB on it.
• 22:15
[laughs] Which works better on bikes- Well, the, the-... that are closer to the ground... right. When the wheel's not so big, it's not such a big deal, but, uh, if you're gonna do it, do it right. But, um- Wow. Yeah...
• 22:27
it's in, in the picture, you can see it in the picture of me going over the bars. The rear tire's off the ground, like, by a foot. Yeah, I see that.
• 22:35
[laughs] So, so this particular one you had is, is the, is fixed, like, uh, you're, you're braking and/or powering with your legs, right? Yes. Yes, sir. Yes, sir.
• 22:45
So, so the one we have is ridiculous because it has an actual caliper brake on the front wheel, meaning if you really grip that thing, you're gonna, you know- End up [laughs]...
• 22:57
probably la- launch yourself as you intended over the, over the bars, I would think. Um, but yeah, it's- Or do something really cool...
• 23:05
and it also has, it also has a, a freewheel, so you can coast on it, which is not typical of penny-farthings either. Yeah. Yeah. That, that is a weird aspect.
• 23:16
See, the, uh, in the video, on my fourth try when I jumped up on it, I didn't get all the way onto the seat, so I had to lift myself up and forward a little bit in mid-stroke on the pedal.
• 23:25
But where it's fixed and the way that that configuration is, it was a very awkward maneuver to kinda get up over it. It was a little spooky. But yeah, those things are tons of fun.
• 23:33
They're not nearly as scary as you might think. Um, if you're with someone who knows how to ride 'em, they can talk you through it, and almost anyone can get up on there, provided you don't have a giant gut.
• 23:44
The, the last time I went, wanted to ride it and had the opportunity to ride it, I weighed, like, 260 pounds, and it just wasn't gonna work, you know? My belly was way, would've been hanging over the front of the bars.
• 23:58
[laughs] Oh. And so I had to, I had to wait until I had lost a, a bunch of weight, uh, to even be able to attempt it, but man, they're super fun. I think it's cool as hell.
• 24:07
So is this, is this an old, old one, or is it a modern, uh, reproduction? It's a repop. It's a repop. Um, but, uh, I guess, uh, my buddy wants to pimp it out.
• 24:18
[laughs] Like, you know how I do with my bikes, like, I put crazy shit on 'em, bling and whatnot. A- I guess he wants to do some stuff to it, so maybe we'll pimp out a penny-farthing.
• 24:29
Yeah, you've, you've, you've been, you, you're still building bikes. I, I see on the, uh, on the Facebook that you're... You haven't stopped making the colorful and, uh, and interesting bikes that you like to do.
• 24:42
Yeah, and I'm only about 50 into it, so yeah, I'm not getting bored yet. [laughs] Awesome. Uh, y- Yeah, crazy... so yeah, here's one more thing I wanted to ask you about, uh, your Dirty Apes- Yeah...
• 24:56
your Damn Dirty Apes con- connection. Rawr. What's that all about? Uh- Yeah... tell me about the, the connection between you and, and the music that's... It's in the penny farthing video, right? Oh, yeah, yeah.
• 25:09
  Um, well, I...
• 25:11
Back in the day when we were doing the whole thing with fat bikes, we were, it was starting to blow up, uh, '13, '14, um, I was looking for other people that loved fat bikes, and I ran across this dude that loved fat bikes, and his name was Jody Huck.
• 25:24
And, um, I, unbeknownst to me, he's a rock star, right? So, um, w- we spent years just, you know, him doing his thing, me doing my thing, until I finally found out that he had a band.
• 25:36
I started listening to his music, and it's awesome. And, um, uh, a little while back, I contacted him. I said, "Dude, this, I've got this project that I wanna un- uh, roll out. Can I you guys, use you guys' music?"
• 25:48
And he's like, "Absolutely." And he gave me permission to use their entire, uh, catalog of music, and it was... It's just been so awesome. He's done so many cool things.
• 25:57
Dude, he s- he sent, like, five T-shirts, every one of their albums, CDs. He sent me one of their original first press vinyl records, like their very first piece of stuff, you know?
• 26:11
It, it's just I'm honored and privileged to have the Damn Dirty Apes as a sponsor for the, the Neighborhood Bike Shop, and hopefully, when I get everything figured out right, I'll kick it off, and I'm not gonna do it bo- before then.
• 26:25
I don't wanna put out something half-assed as my first thing. Yeah. Yeah. Well, you've had a lot of irons in the fire.
• 26:30
We talked, uh, a few weeks ago about starting to do some kind of video, like, with, with Zoom or how- however we're gonna do it, and it would be awesome- Yeah, it, uh- At s- It's all wrapped into that... yeah, okay.
• 26:42
At some point, yeah, we'll, we'll get that figured out so that, you know, you're on while we're talking live, as we are right now, but also on the video. Yeah. And, you know, uh, we're working on the studio here too, so,
• 26:56
um, uh, it's a learning experience- Well, by the way, congratulations... on. I, I've been watching, I've been watching all of you guys' videos, and I really enjoy them, man. Um, uh, Tony and JK are awesome.
• 27:08
Uh, you guys have had a couple guests on. I, but I mean, listening to the podcast is awesome. It's fun.
• 27:15
But seeing everyone talk about it and seeing their facial expressions and the shit that goes back and forth, there's so much more depth to it. I, I really enjoy it, man. Thank you.
• 27:24
Well, I appreciate that because I think there's room for both, you know? While I'm driving down the road, I don't think I can watch a video [laughs] podcast. [laughs] And that is somewhere where I do- Sure...
• 27:33
consume video or a [laughs] podcast regularly is, like driving up to Hayward five hours away, I'm gonna be listening to podcasts on my way up there. [laughs] But I, I agree with you that having- Yeah...
• 27:44
the, the video aspect is definitely adding, uh, another layer, and we've got, we got big plans. We're gonna, uh, J- Joe Rogan and, uh, the Beast got nothing on us, what we got coming, so, um. Oh, boy.
• 27:58
Or whatever his name. What is his name? McBeast or Mr. Beast, whatever the hell his name is. [laughs] I mean, w- look, we got one listener. His name is Mark. We're gonna have more- [laughs]...
• 28:08
because we're gonna do better shit, so you know. [laughs] Like [laughs]
• 28:14
I say, um- So, so, uh, I was gonna ask about, um, something in particular, and I, maybe it's the, we're almost time to open a can of worms, but counterfeit parts.
• 28:23
Um, I've had a buddy that, uh, bought some Paul counterfeit parts off of AliExpress. The levers, they looked pretty damn good. I'm not gonna lie to you.
• 28:33
There was a little bit of shoddy machining here and there, but they were pretty close to looking exactly like Paul levers.
• 28:38
But then he got a Paul boxed stem, like a, a fake Paul boxed stem, a knockoff, and the s- thread stripped out and pulled out on it, and that got me thinking about it.
• 28:48
So I ended up contacting Paul and Gary, uh, uh, at, uh, Paul Components, talking to them about it, and they turned me on to what they're doing about it.
• 28:57
But it's a big deal, and people are getting hurt by buying these products. So people need to know, don't fuck around with that shit. Yeah. Don't fuck around with it.
• 29:06
You may be costing yourself a big chunk of teeth or- Yeah... forehead or whatever. Well, I mean, Paul's been around forever. I, I, I was around when he first started, and I've been, I mean, he's...
• 29:18
I would consider him, like, an Interbike buddy for sure 'cause we hang out at Interbike when they used to do that.
• 29:23
But, uh, I'm pretty sure that, um, he, he's very conscious of making good quality products to the point that if you have something that he put out in, like, 1989 or 1995 and you wanna sell it on eBay because you're trying to, you know, do something different, he'll say, "You know what?
• 29:43
That one could use a bearing upgrade," or, "That one could use this," and it, you know, he's, he's very, very good with- Yep. Yep...
• 29:50
uh, making sure that his product, even from that long ago, is not gonna, you know, fuck someone up, basically. [laughs] Yeah. He's, he stands behind everything he's ever done.
• 30:00
That's, and that's, you know, I mean, that's 20, 30, it's 30 years, close to 30 years that he's been doing this, and- Yeah. Yeah... uh, that's, you know, what, does GM stand behind their cars for 30 years?
• 30:11
I don't think so. You know? Right. I mean- Right. Yeah.
• 30:13
Anyhow, I just, I just felt like I needed to bring that up real quick, like, because it was something that was, uh, powerfully demonstrated right in front of me and could've been something that caused one of my friends to get hurt really bad.
• 30:25
  Yeah.
• 30:25
And I consider all of you guys my friends, so I want you all not to make the mistake of thinking, "Oh, I'm gonna take a shortcut and get something that looks like Paul but it's not really Paul," and you're gonna know it's not Paul.
• 30:36
Saul. So- [laughs] Don't, don't be a, don't be a... We call 'em Raul. Raul. Raul. Damn you. [laughs] Yeah.
• 30:44
Well, and, you know, and, and I mean, flip side to this, just because it's possible, you know, there's a lot of good stuff made overseas, and it just, it basically requires somebody to be actively
• 30:56
keeping up with the quality. But a lot of times what you're finding is that that doesn't, that's not how those companies work. It's, you know, good companies do good stuff. Bad companies do bad stuff, so. Yeah, yeah.
• 31:09
There's no liability for, uh, and, or, or accountability, should I say. And when something, one of those knockoffs go bad, they seem to contact Paul and say, "Hey, your product went bad."
• 31:19
And he's like, "Uh, uh, that's not our product." Right on. Well, uh, y- I'm glad he's o- he's obviously aware of it. He keeps a very good track on his, his brand- Oh, yeah... and hi- and his- Yeah...
• 31:30
quality and, and just how, um, i- into being, making the best stuff there is, that he doesn't let that [laughs] crap happen. Yeah, yeah. Uh, so yeah, my PSA- Well, it, it is an issue, and people need to be aware of it.
• 31:43
That's all. Yeah, perfect. All right, Mark. Yeah. Well, thanks very much for, uh, calling in this week.
• 31:48
We, we were Tony-less today, and, uh, a- and you've done a good, you've done a good thing for us by helping us make a show that doesn't suck. [laughs] Oh, no worries. Thank you for having me on.
• 31:59
It's always a pleasure talking to you guys. Uh, as always, I'd like to invite anybody to come into Prong Horn, either in Syracuse or in Perry in, uh, Utah. Um, stop by. Check us out. Hang out with the staff.
• 32:12
See what we've got to do, how, how we're approaching the whole bike thing. I think you'll enjoy it, and, um, I hope to talk to you guys in the near future.
• 32:19
Real quick, uh, in your recent- [clears throat] One of your recent posts you were in Prong Horn. Is the, is the fella in the picture one of the owners, or is he a, a, a fellow worker? He's the boss. Right on.
• 32:31
He is the guy, guy running the show. Well- The boss with the hot sauce... all right. Well, I'm gonna pu- I'm gonna- I'll throw that picture up there. Uh, you know, we'll, we'll, like, intersperse it with the video.
• 32:40
I'm a lead man. Uh- Yeah, yeah... so that people know who they're talking to, and they, and they can see your, your massively awesome beard, so. [laughs] I'm trying to get there, baby. Why, thank you, fellas.
• 32:50
[laughs] All right, Mark. [laughs] Thanks again. Well- We'll talk to you hopefully soon. Yep. Okay. Love you, bros. Later. Right on. Peace. Bye. All right, everybody. Mark Petersen from out there in Ogden, Utah.
• 33:03
I'm gonna write Prong Horn on my show notes so I don't forget to put... It's now P-R-N-G, uh, forward slash R. I, I'll know what that means when it comes time to [laughs]- Oh... to do this. Sven shorthand.
• 33:18
Yeah, it's f- when it comes time to do that- My scribbles. Nobody knows, to know my scribbles- Yeah, don't-... but me. Don't make no big deal about it. [laughs] Um,
• 33:27
I think- Yeah, Utah I do believe had a, uh, I, I saw something where with the, uh, recent release of Dune Part Two- Something that I need to see...
• 33:38
people were going, "Oh, this is where you could vacation in places that remind you of..." Well, yeah, the Ar- the- Arrakis. Yeah. You can- So yeah. Also- And I do believe something Utah was kicking in one of those lists.
• 33:53
I think you might be able to, you know, get your thirst on out there if you're in the middle of the desert too. You're gonna have to- Isn't, isn't-... cultivate desert power.
• 34:02
Yeah, isn't water a big deal out there in the Dune area? I don't know. Like, you know. Uh- I haven't even... I gotta wa- It's a conspiracy by Is- uh, uh, Oscar Isaac,
• 34:11
who has been in the Marvel universe, the Star Wars universe, now the Dune universe. Am I- Don't get me started... am I gonna have to read all the books again and watch the movie before- [laughs]... I watch the movie?
• 34:20
I'm like, I can't. [laughs] That's, that's a lot of- I, I- That's a lot of Herbert... by- A lot of Herbert... I will can only, uh, [laughs] I, I'm having a hard time getting through Dune Part One- [laughs]... the movie.
• 34:29
  I really am. I, I don't... D- I'm sorry, Timothée Chalamet just pisses me off. [laughs] He just aggravates me. I ca- I can't... I just, I don't... Ugh. That's- I know it's a hurdle.
• 34:41
It's like a Will Ferrell o- uh, over, over. You're, uh, you're too much of you in the world right now. That's, I, I feel you. So I can't, like, invest my brain too much into it. I feel what you're saying.
• 34:53
So I go back and I see the freaking original. [laughs] So I'm gonna leave- And Sting in the underpants. [laughs] Since we've been, since we've been...
• 35:02
I don't know how many episodes in a row we've bashed Florida- [laughs]... but I feel like we shouldn't let this one go without bashing Florida a little bit. Well, yeah. Look what you elected, you shits.
• 35:11
[laughs] This fucking guy. Also, here's a CNBC thing. The 10... Th- these are the 10 happiest cities in America. Guess what number four is, A, right here in our own fair state. Madison.
• 35:24
Madison, is number- It is a happy jolly town... it is number four, and I'm not 100% sure why, 'cause I would posit that Milwaukee's a pretty freaking happy place too. Uh, but the off and the- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 35:36
You get into- You go to the crime and the deaths and the- Ah, whatever... Kia boys and bullshit- But here's the, here's the actual full headline. These are the 10 happiest cities in America. None of them are in Florida.
• 35:47
[laughs] Oh, that's their headline. That's CNBC's. I thought it was your headline. No, no. Oh, I gotcha. I gotcha. That's CNBC's headline. [laughs] I gotta click the button that turns on- Yeah... I thought. For sure.
• 35:56
[laughs] All right, Florida. Go suck an egg, and, uh, we'll be here next week if you- Watch out for your weird crocodiles eating the committee...
• 36:02
if, if you, if you wanna call in and tell us it's all great and whatnot, go right ahead. Yes. My ego is not, it's not flat. Thing [laughs] may have sprung a small baby leak. All right then. Later for you people. Bye.
• 36:17
  Here's how this goes.
• 36:19
[upbeat music] And just because I did this in the middle of the show last week, I'm gonna do it at the end of the show now.
• 36:37
[claps] Thank you, and sync sound and all that crap. Later for you people.
