- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. The feast of Saint Jerome Emiliani. Confessor, July 20 in the year of our Lord 2026.
- 0:22Born at Venice of the patrician family of Emiliani, Jerome unreservedly gave himself up to the influence of divine grace, which on the ruins of the corrupt man, raised him as a new man made in the image of God, as is said in the secret. Filled with the spirit of adoption which makes us children of the father, he was chosen by heaven to be the father of orphans and of the poor as mentioned in the collect.
- 1:01As Jesus had asked the young man in the gospel to do, he left everything and, like his master, made little children come unto him. He founded at Somazgah between Milan and Bergamo, a congregation whose object was to educate youth in orphanages and colleges. Wherefore the introit, applying to him the words of Jeremiah, shows him full of compassion for children who, thanks to him, learned to praise the Lord. Dividing his bread with those who were hungry and covering the naked, he opened asylums for the poor and gave them abundant alms with the help of the nobility of Pavia and Milan. He died of the plague in the year of Our Lord 1537, having borne on his shoulders the plague stricken to their burial place.
- 2:09Let us have recourse to the father of mercies so that we may be filled like Saint Jerome with holy charity for the poor and for children. Commemorated today is Saint Margaret, Virgin and Martyr, who had been taught the Christian religion by her nurse. She perished by the sword in the last general persecution at Antioch in Pisidia towards 02/1955 to 02/1975. From the East, her worship was carried to the West during the Crusades. She is especially invoked by those about to become mothers.
- 2:58Her name is in the list of the 14 auxiliary saints. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. The introit. My heart lies trampled in the dust to see the desolation of my country women.
- 3:25No child left. No baby at the breast in all the streets of the city. Praise the Lord, you that are his servants. Praise the name of the Lord together. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages.
- 3:55Amen. My heart lies trampled in the dust to see the desolation of my country women. No child left, no baby at the breast in all the streets of the city. The collect. Let us pray.
- 4:18O God, the father of mercies, grant by the intercession of blessed Jerome, whom thou didst will to be the helper and father of orphans, that we may faithfully guard the spirit of adoption, whereby we are both in name and reality, thy children. A commemoration of Saint Margaret. May blessed Margaret, Virgin and Martyr, who was ever pleasing to thee by her merit of chastity and by her extolling of thy power, implore thy forgiveness for us, we beseech thee, O Lord. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 5:21A lesson from the prophet Isaiah. Share thy bread with the hungry. Give the poor and the vagrant a welcome to thy house. Meet thou the naked. Clothe him.
- 5:39From thy own flesh and blood, turn not away. Then sudden as the dawn, the welcome light shall break on thee. In a moment, thy health shall find a new spring. Divine favor shall lead thee on thy journey. Brightness of the Lord's presence close thy ranks behind.
- 6:05Then the Lord will listen to thee when thou callest on him. Cry out, and he will answer, I am here at thy side. Banish from thy midst oppression and the finger pointed scornfully and the plotting of harm. Spin thyself giving food to the hungry, relieving the afflicted. Then shall light spring up for thee in the darkness, and thy dusk shall be noonday.
- 6:44The Lord will give thee rest continually. Fill thy soul with comfort, thy body with ease. Not more secure the well watered garden, the spring whose waters never fail. The gradual. Let thy fountains be conveyed abroad, and in the streets divide thy waters.
- 7:14Acceptable is the man that showeth mercy and lendeth. He orders his words with judgment because he shall not be moved forever. Alleluia. Alleluia. He hath distributed.
- 7:31He hath given to the poor. His justice remaineth for ever and ever. Alleluia. A continuation of the holy gospel according to Matthew. At that time they brought children to him so that he might lay his hands on them in prayer.
- 7:55And his disciples rebuked them for it. But Jesus said, let the children be. Do not keep them back from me. The kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these. And so he laid his hands on them and went on his way.
- 8:16And now a man came to him and said, master, who art so good? What good must I do to win eternal life? He said to him, why dost thou come to me to ask of goodness? God is good and he only. If thou hast a mind to enter into life, keep the commandments.
- 8:47Which commandments? He asked. Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not steal.
- 9:04Thou shalt not bear false witness. Honor thy father and thy mother. And thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. I have kept all these, the young man told him, ever since I grew up. Where is it that I am still wanting?
- 9:30Jesus said to him, If thou hast a mind to be perfect, go home and sell all that belongs to thee, give it to the poor, and so the treasure thou hast shall be in heaven. Then come back and follow me. The Offeratory. When thou didst pray with tears and didst bury the dead and didst leave thy dinner and hide the dead by day in thy house and bury them by night. I offered thy prayer to the lord.
- 10:21The secret. Oh, most merciful god, who having destroyed the old man did vouch safe to create in blessed Rome a new man according to thee. Grant by his merits that we, renewed in like manner, may offer this sacrifice of propitiation for an odour of sweetness unto thee, a commemoration of Saint Margaret. Graciously accept, O Lord, the sacrifices dedicated to the merits of Blessed Margaret, Thy Virgin and Martyr, and grant them as a perpetual aid on our behalf through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 11:26The common preface. Just it is indeed and fitting, right in for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, The power stand in awe. The heavens and the hosts of heaven, together with the blessed Seraphim, joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts.
- 12:18The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion.
- 12:39Religion, clean and undefiled before God and the Father, is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation and to keep oneself unspotted from this. The post communion. Let us pray. Refreshed with the bread of angels, we humbly ask of thee, O Lord, that we who joyfully celebrate the annual commemoration of blessed Jerome, thy confessor, may also imitate his example and be enabled to obtain a most abundant reward in thy kingdom. A commemoration of Saint Margaret, filled with the bounty of thy divine gift, we beseech thee, O Lord, that by the intercession of blessed Margaret, thy Virgin and Martyr, we may ever live in the partaking thereof through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages.
