Transcript
- 0:00Jon: This week on Xenomania, join us as we explore the world of the Strangers,
- 0:06chapter one, Renny Harlan Directed.
- 0:09So we're gonna get a little bit of an exploration of Freddy Harlan movies
- 0:13and a lot of side trips on this one.
- 0:16So sit back and enjoy a
- 0:34Ryan: I don't like it when they advertise.
- 0:37It's gonna be a new thing.
- 0:39and it's not just, like this.
- 0:41Welcome ladies and gentlemen to Xenomania.
- 0:43And today we are covering the strangers.
- 0:46Chapter one.
- 0:47Jon: Only chapter one
- 0:48Kearns: Just chapter one.
- 0:50Ryan: No, just
- 0:51Jon: probably ever.
- 0:53I have a feeling by the time we're done talking about this, none of us
- 0:57is gonna wanna watch the next two.
- 0:59Ryan: I'm curious because it, again, we're talking about trilogies the last time.
- 1:05Yeah.
- 1:06I mean, sometimes you can have a weak opening, which we'll get to it
- 1:11of with this one, but maybe chapter two has a different follow up
- 1:15because it is following a new story.
- 1:17way di well, different but very similar to the original one.
- 1:22That was in 2008.
- 1:25Jon: I mean, when your movie is three masked people invading a home and
- 1:31slicing up the couple people, there's only so much room for originality in it.
- 1:37you could argue that there wasn't even really a point in
- 1:40rebooting this, that this sh you know, just make another sequel.
- 1:43Kearns: the money without having to.
- 1:46Jon: Yeah.
- 1:46Kearns: a new script.
- 1:48That's pretty
- 1:49Jon: Yeah.
- 1:50I.
- 1:51Ryan: basically
- 1:51Jon: guess, I mean, it's, it's not, um, cabin fever being remade.
- 1:57It shot for shot, but you know, you've seen this movie, if
- 2:01you've seen the First Strangers.
- 2:03Ryan: a hundred percent,
- 2:03Kearns: don't really see much, I don't see enough different with it to
- 2:06make any like major comments on it.
- 2:09I think that there's less suspense in this one compared to the first one.
- 2:13I think the first one was trying to be more suspenseful.
- 2:17Ryan: yes.
- 2:17Kearns: a little bit more
- 2:18Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 2:19Kearns: but even that's kind of a stretch to point out.
- 2:23Ryan: There, is one thing I did like is they expand on their faith, like what
- 2:28they believe in because they hint at it.
- 2:30In the original one in 2008, I've seen bits and pieces
- 2:36of the sequel Pray at night.
- 2:38but seeing how they expand it in this one, I feel like their faith
- 2:42is like a big expansion, especially with them having their own, just God.
- 2:48It's just Christianity, Chris Christianity and Roman Catholicism,
- 2:52Kearns: Roman Catholicism,
- 2:56Ryan: Christianity,
- 2:57Kearns: little Constantinople stuff.
- 2:58I don't know how that fits their, actions, but, uh, I'm gonna be like the dude
- 3:04from big lab could be like nihilist man.
- 3:08Ryan: everyone's a sinner according to them, and it, makes a point when.
- 3:13in the beginning, this young couple, um, Maya and her boyfriend
- 3:17Ryan are just traveling to Oregon.
- 3:20Maya's got a new job.
- 3:21She's got an interview.
- 3:22Ryan's going along for the ride.
- 3:24He's like really into it, like it seems like she's forced him.
- 3:29He's like, comfortable.
- 3:31I could say she wants more.
- 3:33And as they're at the diner, the big question is are they married?
- 3:37And when they say no, that's when kind of everything turns
- 3:41like, uh, you live in sin.
- 3:44Jon: Well, yeah, but it almost feels like the whole being an
- 3:49outsider in that town is the sin,
- 3:52Ryan: oh, I can see that
- 3:54Jon: you know, that you're not from here.
- 3:57this seems like a very insular community and they're not gonna be
- 4:00welcoming of Amaya and especially Orion.
- 4:05Kearns: was waiting for somebody to do that.
- 4:07That was pretty good.
- 4:08That was pretty good,
- 4:09Ryan: it's this.
- 4:10This, Ryan is far different from me.
- 4:12He's egotistical.
- 4:13Narcissist
- 4:14Kearns: is,
- 4:15Ryan: no heart.
- 4:15Kearns: movie is New place.
- 4:17Second movie is Airbnb.
- 4:18Right.
- 4:19Our remake is Airbnb.
- 4:21Ryan: Yes.
- 4:22Yeah.
- 4:22Well,
- 4:23Jon: Yeah, it's a air,
- 4:25Ryan: I'd say
- 4:25Jon: Airbnb, vrbo, you know, that kind of situation.
- 4:30Yeah.
- 4:30And is,
- 4:31Kearns: but everybody says Airbnb,
- 4:33Jon: yeah.
- 4:34Yeah.
- 4:35As, as secluded as you can possibly be.
- 4:37You know?
- 4:38I don't know, maybe ask if there's a hotel in town if your car breaks down.
- 4:42Ryan: hold that
- 4:43Kearns: the Airbnb scaries.
- 4:46Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 4:47Ryan: just to say that.
- 4:48Jon: I, and I,
- 4:49Kearns: Poppy.
- 4:49Jon: I mean, barbarian hits them better.
- 4:51Ryan: Yeah, it did.
- 4:52Kearns: This movie compared to Barbarian
- 4:54Jon: Yeah.
- 4:54Kearns: so we're not gonna do that.
- 4:56the Airbnb thing also leads to another character.
- 5:00I don't remember the 2008 one as vividly as I'd like to.
- 5:04The Airbnb owner catches it in this movie,
- 5:08Ryan: Yep.
- 5:09Which is similar in the original, where the best friend
- 5:12gets it for similar things.
- 5:13you were mentioning in the original, it's like their cabin up in the
- 5:16woods and they're coming up from a, like a wedding and guy proposes
- 5:21to Liv Tyler, I forgot the actor's name, but he proposes to Liv Tyler.
- 5:26She says, no.
- 5:27And it's similar in that vein with, this one, definitely with that whole
- 5:32concept of relationships and stuff, the comfortability, you know, trying to out
- 5:38we outgrow, should we grow together?
- 5:40it's just a little less in your face in this one.
- 5:43Yeah.
- 5:44Jon: Yeah, I, mean, you get, Ryan agreeing that if she gets the job
- 5:49in the new city, he'll go like he's willing to relocate for her.
- 5:53And then the proposal, so like he's, Ryan is committed.
- 5:57Ryan is just sort of, I think the best way to describe him is maybe urban douchey.
- 6:04Kearns: I believe it's.
- 6:05Ryan: I agree with that.
- 6:06Jon: Like he's, he's, he's not a bad guy necessarily, but he's in a spot where he
- 6:12believes he's better than these people.
- 6:15And maybe he is, but
- 6:17Kearns: oh, that's so
- 6:17Jon: yeah.
- 6:18Kearns: I'm better than you.
- 6:21Jon: Yeah.
- 6:21Ryan: drinking Budweiser.
- 6:22He bought Budweiser.
- 6:24He was accepted
- 6:25Jon: mean, look at where he is.
- 6:28Do you think there's anything besides Budweiser in that town?
- 6:31Kearns: Triple Point
- 6:33Ryan: Yingling
- 6:34Kearns: out there.
- 6:35Jon: He's not getting yingling in there either.
- 6:38Ryan: Yingling.
- 6:38Ah.
- 6:39Jon: May, maybe a, maybe a blue room.
- 6:41Maybe a PBR?
- 6:42Kearns: So PBR is, is goaded status, but it's, also a garbage beer.
- 6:47but it's
- 6:48Jon: Yeah.
- 6:48Kearns: we've embraced that so much that we put it on a
- 6:50pedestal, like, rolling Rock,
- 6:53Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 6:54Kearns: Blue Moon, not Blue Moon, like, um, Labat Blue and stuff.
- 6:58Those are all bad.
- 6:59Ryan: Yep.
- 7:00Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:00Kearns: they're
- 7:01Jon: Yeah.
- 7:01Yeah.
- 7:02Kearns: bad.
- 7:03Jon: PPBR got the, urban douchey.
- 7:07I'm slumming it beer status.
- 7:09Kearns: then people started crushing those and rednecks and hipsters like a good PBR.
- 7:14Good.
- 7:1599 cent.
- 7:15PBR Can
- 7:18Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:19Ryan: Mm
- 7:19Jon: personally, I prefer the champagne of beers.
- 7:22Your, your Miller.
- 7:23Kearns: it Miller
- 7:23Jon: Yeah.
- 7:24Miller.
- 7:24Highlight.
- 7:24Kearns: would swipe 'em
- 7:25Ryan: Miller.
- 7:25Kearns: my friend's dad, Mr. P, if you're watching this.
- 7:28Yes.
- 7:29It was us.
- 7:31Jon: Go down So quick and easy.
- 7:33Ryan: why there was five beers short every time.
- 7:36Kearns: Yeah.
- 7:37Ryan: missed that 1 24 pack that weekend,
- 7:40Kearns: That's
- 7:40Ryan: Kurt.
- 7:40Kearns: have figured out from all this is like, why spend, I spend
- 7:4529 99 on a 24 rack of Yingling, which is good, by the way.
- 7:50I like the
- 7:50Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:51Kearns: tastes.
- 7:51It goes down easy.
- 7:52It's a good
- 7:53Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:53Kearns: after you've like, uh, mowed the lawn kind of one.
- 7:57Ryan: Yep,
- 7:57Kearns: realized like, you might as well just get or Bud Bud Light
- 8:02because it's, well, bud Bud's up there too but half the price 'cause
- 8:06you're getting the same quality.
- 8:07And then
- 8:08Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 8:08Kearns: to the
- 8:08Ryan: yep.
- 8:09Kearns: dispensary and pick out the ones that are made in all
- 8:11these local breweries that point,
- 8:14Jon: Yeah.
- 8:15Kearns: then you're on a different tier.
- 8:17Jon: Yeah.
- 8:18Ryan: It is just a grape
- 8:18Jon: I mean, back, back in the day, it was Milwaukee's best.
- 8:23I mean, that was like a, that was a, yeah, that was like a 5 99 case
- 8:28right there when I, was in college.
- 8:30Kearns: adjacent right
- 8:32Jon: Uh huh.
- 8:33Ice House, Natty Ice.
- 8:35Kearns: I was there it was
- 8:36Jon: Keystone
- 8:37Kearns: Malt Liquor.
- 8:39Uh, it said brace for the smooth taste.
- 8:40It tasted like you were drinking broken glass.
- 8:44Yeah, it was.
- 8:45It made cold
- 8:46Ryan: I can't.
- 8:46Kearns: look like a distinguished gentleman's beverage, but
- 8:51Jon: Cold 45 is a rough drink, man.
- 8:53Kearns: a 40
- 8:55Ryan: It's good.
- 8:55Jon: Yeah, it's a rough drink.
- 8:57Kearns: yeah.
- 8:59Ryan: It's the malt.
- 9:00Kearns: I'm so
- 9:00Ryan: You just got to,
- 9:01Kearns: of that crap anymore.
- 9:03Ryan: I God Imagine
- 9:08Kearns: and at this point
- 9:09Ryan: 40 and a cigarette.
- 9:10Kearns: a tangent for
- 9:10Ryan: I,
- 9:11Kearns: but I feel like that's the kind of stuff
- 9:12Jon: We sure did.
- 9:14Kearns: Well, we're a bunch of
- 9:15Ryan: that's.
- 9:15Kearns: dudes on a snowy day, been shoveling all day.
- 9:18We're just like, beer would be nice.
- 9:21Jon: Yeah, exactly.
- 9:23Yeah.
- 9:24It'd be a nice day if it wasn't so cold and snowy to sit out with a beer
- 9:28and a cigar and enjoy the afternoon.
- 9:30But
- 9:30Ryan: I do agree with that.
- 9:32It's still enjoy a cigar and a glass of wine.
- 9:35It's not that, not that bad.
- 9:37It's snowing a little bit now.
- 9:40Kearns: Be quiet about
- 9:41Ryan: Not in your neck of the woods.
- 9:42Kearns: out.
- 9:44You mean down here in Arizona where I live
- 9:47Ryan: In that heat.
- 9:48Jon: doesn't,
- 9:49Ryan: The dry heat,
- 9:50Kearns: dry.
- 9:51Jon: I mean
- 9:51Ryan: dry
- 9:52Jon: this ice down the bayou is rough on me.
- 9:55Kearns: It's, you know, it's like negative 13 down in northern Louisiana.
- 9:59Oh boy.
- 10:01Ryan: Oh,
- 10:01Kearns: All right.
- 10:02Back to this garbage heap of a film.
- 10:03So you know what you're getting into with this and you don't it, the problem
- 10:08is a remake carries with it expectation.
- 10:10You expect it to be good.
- 10:12Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 10:13Kearns: isn't bad, but it's not good.
- 10:16I don't know how to really
- 10:17Ryan: it
- 10:17Jon: I
- 10:17Kearns: it.
- 10:18Jon: mean,
- 10:18Ryan: it.
- 10:19Jon: I don't, I don't know that I went into it with high expectations because I
- 10:22didn't like the strangers to begin with.
- 10:25Like, this is a series that has sort of always fallen flat on me.
- 10:28I think Pray at Night is the best of them that I've watched so far, and
- 10:32that's, you know, not high praise.
- 10:36Ryan: Hey.
- 10:36Kearns: slashers and you guys know that, but like strain
- 10:39Ryan: Yeah,
- 10:39Kearns: out of the slasher genre and then at the tail end of the revival
- 10:43of it in the late nineties and then
- 10:45Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 10:46Kearns: to me too.
- 10:47I can't believe that Liv Tyler got signed for it, for starters,
- 10:51and it's just, I don't know, I, it never really hit for me either.
- 10:56Ryan: I think it was just because the time, I mean I was in, this movie came
- 11:00out, I was in high school senior year.
- 11:02So like we were talking about it as like it's something new.
- 11:05And the thing is you had the pacing.
- 11:07The pacing, I think it's like an 80 to 85 minute film.
- 11:11It's like starts off with the bang, like it's all uncomfortable in the beginning.
- 11:15And that uncomfortability like builds up as this couple's like reconciling
- 11:20during like this tirade with all these, mass killers and tirade,
- 11:28Kearns: you keep saying uncomfortability and I think the word
- 11:31you're looking for is discomfort.
- 11:33Ryan: uh, discomfort.
- 11:35Another word in the lexicon, this uncomfortability that they feel,
- 11:41they feel this uncomfortability.
- 11:42But, um, it was different though for 2008, especially when you've
- 11:46seen like the same old thing Michael Meyers, Jason, this was different.
- 11:51It was in the woods.
- 11:52It was like, you know, and most of the time when we were out partying,
- 11:56we're partying in the woods.
- 11:57Something similar to that.
- 11:58You go to that cabin and it's got that.
- 12:01I think it like related to us in that vibe of like, this is where we kind of party.
- 12:06If we're gonna look in the woods, where we might see these guys.
- 12:10Jon: Yeah, I can see that to, I mean, to me it just always fell flat.
- 12:14Like there's no motivations.
- 12:16There's just these like really expressionless killers and you
- 12:21know, some characters that I didn't care all that much about.
- 12:26And it's sort of repeated in this one.
- 12:28The only thing I sort of have hope for with, you know, chapter two and chapter
- 12:33three of this new trilogy, is that they get into some motivation and you know,
- 12:39may I know they're gonna reveal who's under at least one of the masks because I
- 12:46was looking at the cast for chapter two.
- 12:49Kearns: I forgot their names.
- 12:50Ryan: Yep.
- 12:51Kearns: let's
- 12:51Ryan: It's pin up girl,
- 12:52Kearns: girl.
- 12:53Ryan: doll face.
- 12:56Yep.
- 12:57Yep.
- 12:57Jon: Gary Crow and doll face.
- 12:58Yeah,
- 12:59Ryan: I'm
- 12:59Jon: I believe, I believe it was pinup that I saw
- 13:04Ryan: Ooh, so.
- 13:05Jon: the credit for,
- 13:06Ryan: I am curious.
- 13:08Jon: I mean, I can spoil it if you want.
- 13:10Kearns: the listeners want you to, but then again, it is a garbage heap
- 13:14Ryan: Amy,
- 13:14Jon: I mean, it,
- 13:15Kearns: property.
- 13:15Jon: spoil If you, just look at the IMDB page, like I don't think they're really
- 13:20trying to keep it hidden going forward.
- 13:24I mean, 'cause it's the waitress.
- 13:26One of them is the waitress.
- 13:30Ryan: come on, John.
- 13:31Now I'm not watching chapter two now.
- 13:33No, I'm, I mean,
- 13:35Jon: I mean, but.
- 13:35Kearns: two is 'cause you two are gonna make me
- 13:38Ryan: actually I, I'd be
- 13:39Jon: I don't, I mean, I don't know if I'm gonna make you, we, we will see, I mean,
- 13:42I, you know, at some point I imagine we closed the loop on this trilogy, but it's
- 13:47not gonna be anytime soon, I don't think.
- 13:49Ryan: nah, this isn't
- 13:51Jon: I mean,
- 13:51Ryan: levels or critters level, which is coming this year.
- 13:56Jon: I just don't think it's necessarily worthy of, multiple
- 13:59episodes at this point.
- 14:00maybe two and three get better, but I, think for me, once I saw who directed
- 14:07this, it was sort of, all right.
- 14:09I know what I'm about to get into.
- 14:11Ryan: Renee Hartland.
- 14:12Jon: This is, yeah, this is Renny Harlan at Renny Harlan's Most Renny Harlan.
- 14:18Kearns: So can we tell the listeners who may not know about Remy, Harlan what
- 14:21other pictures this person has made?
- 14:25Jon: Well, this is probably a good time to roll into our game.
- 14:28Kearns: buddy.
- 14:29Jon: Slasher Stash because it is Renny Harlan movies.
- 14:34Ryan: Uh, is gonna be interesting 'cause currents, just to give you a
- 14:38little info on Harlan, he's directed blah, he's directed diehard too.
- 14:44He's directed cliffhanger Deep.
- 14:46Oh,
- 14:46Kearns: John to
- 14:48Ryan: oh,
- 14:50Jon: Yep.
- 14:51Yep.
- 14:51So Guys
- 14:53Ryan: I had some trivia.
- 14:54Jon: slash Slasher Stash.
- 14:56These Renny Harlan movies.
- 14:59Kearns: John
- 14:59Jon: And number one
- 15:00Kearns: an,
- 15:01Jon: is the John Cena Classic.
- 15:0412 rounds?
- 15:05Ryan: Are we still keeping three?
- 15:07Cutting.
- 15:07Five.
- 15:09Jon: No, we're, gonna go to four and four because there's no way I can make, keep
- 15:13three of these piles worthy for you guys.
- 15:16Ryan: Well, I'm just gonna slash this out of the bat.
- 15:18I've seen 12 rounds.
- 15:20There's,
- 15:21Kearns: I gotta slash it as well.
- 15:23Ryan: it's not like blockers.
- 15:25Ricky Snicky, like, it's not like his, newer films where he can actually act or
- 15:32Jon: Any though,
- 15:33Ryan: be funny.
- 15:33He's funny.
- 15:35he's got a
- 15:35Jon: I mean, he, he's got, yeah, he's got some form of comedy presence.
- 15:42I mean, he's not the rock.
- 15:45Ryan: No, no.
- 15:47Kearns: Nobody's the rock.
- 15:48Jon: So we're both, you're, we're both slashing 12 rounds is where
- 15:53we're, we're getting to here.
- 15:54Ryan: Yeah,
- 15:54Kearns: the
- 15:55Jon: right.
- 15:55Kearns: is not even the rock.
- 15:56Oh.
- 15:56Keeping this bad boy.
- 15:58My hat is like a shock.
- 15:59Fin.
- 16:00Deep blue.
- 16:01See LL Cool
- 16:03Ryan: definitely keep, definitely stashing it.
- 16:06Kearns: I'm stashing this sucker
- 16:07Jon: Yeah.
- 16:08Kearns: parrot.
- 16:09Best part of the movie.
- 16:11That damn bird I.
- 16:13Jon: Is it the Parrot or is it Samuel l Jackson's motivational speech.
- 16:18Kearns: That part was good
- 16:19Jon: I love that part.
- 16:20Kearns: saw it coming.
- 16:21And then there was this big controversy that he had an issue with it.
- 16:25he wouldn't have taken the movie.
- 16:26He read the script.
- 16:27He wouldn't have taken the movie if he had an
- 16:29Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:29Kearns: it.
- 16:29You silly gooses.
- 16:32Ryan: It's
- 16:32Jon: Yeah.
- 16:32Kearns: the same actress that was in Gladiator as well.
- 16:36Ryan: Yep.
- 16:37Kearns: what her name is.
- 16:40Yeah,
- 16:41Jon: I'm blanking on it too.

- 18:26but as we look back, we're like, man, remember how big this was?
- 18:30This was.
- 18:31Kearns: I just assumed things would be that way forever.

- 19:44Brian knows a few more of the titles than I do probably too.
- 19:48I wanna cut it as well.
- 19:50'cause it is, I mean, it should have been a Fallout movie, you know,
- 19:55Ryan: Yep.

- 23:49look at that
- 23:50Ryan: Yeah.
- 23:50Slash slash this they say, uh, was in the behind the scenes that he
- 23:57actually like like a higher elevation compared to the Tom Cruise mission.
- 24:03Possible two seat.
- 24:04Kearns: yeah, there was, I,
- 24:06Ryan: Like,
- 24:06Kearns: if you sent a video or if we just both watched the same thing,
- 24:09but I watched a sizable amount of, stuff on cliffhanger trivia and behind
- 24:14the scenes like stuff recently, and realize it was as involved as it was.
- 24:20They, they went hardcore on cliffhanger.
- 24:24Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 24:25Ryan: okay.
- 24:25Jon: Yeah.
- 24:26Ryan: Yeah.
- 24:26No, they,
- 24:27Jon: Wait,
- 24:27Kearns: The loan's not skipping light day,
- 24:29Jon: Ryan, did you say.
- 24:31Ryan: say slash um, you know, I only saw the video with explaining how he
- 24:36actually held onto like a high elevation, and I was like, Jesus Stallone, like
- 24:42you almost killed yourself here for it.
- 24:43But again, what year did this film come out?
- 24:45Like early nineties, right?
- 24:48Jon: Early nineties.
- 24:49Yeah,
- 24:49Kearns: don't know if it was late middle,
- 24:51Jon: I think it was earlier than that.
- 24:53I think it was fairly, I think I was still living at home when this came out.
- 24:57Kearns: this.
- 24:57Let's find out.
- 24:58Jon: So it would be early nineties.
- 25:00Kearns: there.
- 25:00It's,
- 25:00Jon: Yeah.
- 25:01Kearns: I enjoyed this movie very much.
- 25:04I enjoyed it.
- 25:05And then, the nature calls, scene where he drops the raccoon, the
- 25:10Ace Ventura scene, and the se
- 25:11Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 25:12Kearns: making fun of it.
- 25:14dumb, but I loved it.
- 25:15I'm gonna stash it.
- 25:16Jon: Yeah.
- 25:18Excellent.
- 25:19Kearns: Excellent,
- 25:20Jon: Movie number seven.
- 25:24There it is.
- 25:25Ryan: Stash.
- 25:26Kearns: I don't even know if I have two left or one or none or
- 25:28whatever, but I have to stash it.
- 25:31Ryan: I'll be slashing
- 25:32Jon: you.
- 25:32Ryan: film.
- 25:34Jon: I think you both actually worked out well with this one, because
- 25:37there is no way either one of you're gonna wanna stash the last movie
- 25:42Kearns: Well,
- 25:42Ryan: What's,
- 25:43Jon: because the last movie is Oh, yeah.
- 25:49Ryan: oh, I would, hold on, hold on.
- 25:50Wait a minute.
- 25:51Wait a minute.
- 25:51Hold on.
- 25:52I would, I would've, I would've stashed that because Robert Englin in it is a gem.
- 25:59He placed
- 25:59Jon: Okay.
- 25:59Ryan: the, the assassin.
- 26:02Jon: Okay.
- 26:02Mr. Hindsight, what would you slash to ke to
- 26:08Kearns: Pirate
- 26:09Jon: stash Ford Fairlane
- 26:10Ryan: Cutthroat.
- 26:11Cutthroat island.
- 26:12Kearns: It sounds like a porn.
- 26:13Jon: after you, after you just talked so highly of Cutthroat
- 26:17Island and, your childhood with it?
- 26:19You're gonna get rid of it for Ford Fairlane.
- 26:23Ryan: Fairlane Ford Fairlane
- 26:24Kearns: for Dice Clay action.
- 26:27Ryan: Ford Fairlane is childhood two on VH one
- 26:30Kearns: don't
- 26:30Ryan: after.
- 26:31Jon: Oh,
- 26:31Kearns: Dice Clay had on America for a while.
- 26:36Ryan: Oh, the nursery rhymes.
- 26:38Jon: he had about three or four years that sort of ended with Ford
- 26:42Fairlane, where he was, everything.
- 26:46Kearns: He had CDs coming out left and right.
- 26:48Uh, it's overlaps George Carlin's dominance period.
- 26:52obviously he
- 26:53Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:54Kearns: at the time, but he was definitely the best shtick.
- 26:57Ryan: Yeah.
- 26:58Jon: It, it outshined carlin it out.
- 27:00He outshined everybody.
- 27:02He was selling out arenas.
- 27:04Kearns: 'cause everybody wanted to go see
- 27:05Jon: He, I think,
- 27:07Ryan: Yep.
- 27:07Jon: yeah, I think he sold out MSG telling Dirty Nursery rhymes like that.
- 27:13And that was like really the only, truly funny part of his, routine.
- 27:17The rest of it was just sort of like everybody else with, the thick accent.
- 27:22Like that was what set him apart.
- 27:24Ryan: he does do a good Michael Matson impression, which came up recently
- 27:28Kearns: him
- 27:29Ryan: decent.
- 27:30Kearns: over the last five or six years and stuff, like, a lot
- 27:33of people think he's like that.
- 27:35His stage persona,
- 27:36Jon: Yeah.
- 27:37Ryan: Yeah,
- 27:37Jon: Yeah.
- 27:38No.
- 27:39Kearns: a bit, it's a
- 27:40Jon: Yeah.
- 27:40Yeah.
- 27:41It's, fun watching him now, seeing the, bit gone and just listening to,
- 27:47he's a, been a fairly interesting guy to listen to, surprisingly.
- 27:52Ryan: he's got some funny skits with John Lovett's up there.
- 27:54He does a lot of skits with John
- 27:55Kearns: Lovetts would, um, it would seem like they would get after it for real.
- 28:00Ryan: Yep.
- 28:02Kearns: I don't know how
- 28:03Ryan: I'm just thinking.
- 28:03Kearns: like, you know, how we bicker and banter and, and have play and stuff.
- 28:06I don't know how true the Lovet dice clay thing was though, because that felt real.
- 28:11Ryan: I can see LUTs pushing it into it and then being like, I'm just a birdie.
- 28:15I'm just in your tree.
- 28:16Sorry, I'm thinking of little Nicki right now.
- 28:18Jon: I know John Levit is not particularly well liked,
- 28:22Kearns: he
- 28:22Jon: so
- 28:23Kearns: there's
- 28:23Ryan: no.
- 28:23Kearns: story about him getting yelled at by Chris Farley, or I
- 28:27guess he was giving crap to Farley, showed up to his party lady and he is
- 28:30Jon: mm-hmm.
- 28:31Kearns: food for everybody else.
- 28:32And he put, his cat on a sandwich or something, like he
- 28:35made a sandwich out of his cat
- 28:36Ryan: Yep.
- 28:37Kearns: and was dad.
- 28:38Lovet was furious.
- 28:40Ryan: They got a picture of that somewhere.
- 28:42A black and white picture of him putting the cat between the sandwich.
- 28:45Ah, Chris Farley was a gem.
- 28:47Another gem gone too soon.
- 28:49Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 28:50But before we move, move on and not going to Debbie Downer territory.
- 28:54I. Their best TV edit of all time.
- 28:58We should do one of those as like a top five best TV audio edit of all time.
- 29:02'cause the Die Hard two one he lights the fire, the for the fuel the end,
- 29:09yippy ca, Mr. Barack does he call him at the end instead of mother er?
- 29:14He goes,
- 29:16Jon: I don't know.
- 29:17I never saw the TV version.
- 29:19Ryan: the TV yet either.
- 29:20Kearns: The, the Big Lebowski might be the best of all time.
- 29:24best of
- 29:24Ryan: leow funny.
- 29:25Kearns: Hard.
- 29:26Um, all the Van Damm movies, the Terminator movies,
- 29:29there's a bunch of super
- 29:30Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 29:31Kearns: sure somebody put 'em all together out there.
- 29:33Jon: Yeah, the Warriors has a great TV edit because it's got
- 29:36stuff that wasn't in the movie.
- 29:38Like they put,
- 29:39Ryan: Yep, yep,
- 29:39Jon: they put some of the deleted scenes back in because once they cut
- 29:43the stuff they couldn't show on tv.
- 29:44They didn't have a long enough movie.
- 29:47Kearns: makes sense.
- 29:48Ryan: yep.
- 29:49Kearns: actually kind of neat.
- 29:50Jon: There's a few of those.
- 29:51Yeah.
- 29:52Kearns: mean, we should
- 29:52Ryan: But.
- 29:53Kearns: this for another 15 minutes.
- 29:54'cause as with all of our movies that are like, we're, we're gonna
- 29:58run outta stuff to talk about for the film about five more minutes.
- 30:03Jon: I mean, we can talk about the Warriors all day.
- 30:05I love that movie.
- 30:07Everything about that movie.
- 30:09Ryan: Warriors would be
- 30:10Jon: Yeah.
- 30:11Ryan: watching the original theatrical cut or are we watching the new edition?
- 30:15Like he designed it like a comic book.
- 30:19Jon: I prefer the original cut.
- 30:21I don't like the cartoon cut.
- 30:23Ryan: Nah,
- 30:23Kearns: Cartoon
- 30:24Ryan: nah.
- 30:24Jon: Yeah.
- 30:24Kearns: are
- 30:25Jon: Because I
- 30:26Kearns: across the board every time somebody tries to pull that off.
- 30:28They did that with the Hulk movie,
- 30:30Jon: mm-hmm.
- 30:30Kearns: Bana Hulk
- 30:31Ryan: Yep.
- 30:32Kearns: It just falls flat
- 30:33Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 30:33Kearns: woowoo
- 30:34Jon: Yeah, It doesn't bring anything to the Warriors.
- 30:38Like, I get it.
- 30:38All right.
- 30:39Here's this image of, from a comic book of the Warriors, and then
- 30:43you go right back to the movie, so it's like it doesn't do anything.
- 30:46Ryan: thought it was cool to give it like a
- 30:48little modern, fix up.
- 30:49And it's from the director.
- 30:50It wasn't the studio who decided, the
- 30:53Jon: Yeah.
- 30:53Yeah.
- 30:54Ryan: why I think it's cool.
- 30:55Uh, but nah, I mean, you, we could watch the original.
- 30:58Kearns: We
- 30:58Ryan: I just got the bottles ready.
- 30:59Kearns: we should watch
- 31:00Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 31:01Ryan: ears.
- 31:02Kearns: here.
- 31:03Jon: One of, one of the guys on the Patriots showed up yesterday
- 31:06with the bottles on his hand doing that, walking into the locker room.
- 31:09Ryan: great.
- 31:10Jon: was pretty cool.
- 31:11Yeah,
- 31:12Ryan: The warriors exist.
- 31:13it's a timeless movie.
- 31:15I mean, if you really get into it with gaming culture and retro gaming
- 31:19coming back there is a PlayStation two game on the Warriors, which
- 31:23Jon: there is,
- 31:24Ryan: Excellent game, pre cool.
- 31:26Jon: it's a rockstar game too, so you know exactly what you're getting from it.
- 31:30Ryan: yes, you are fighting looting.
- 31:34Kearns: Rockstar
- 31:34Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 31:35Kearns: out for micro transactions, did they?
- 31:39Ryan: Yes.
- 31:40For GTA five, technically they did you get the credit card and you can do, you
- 31:45know, buy cars, buy buildings, it'ss.
- 31:48Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 31:49Ryan: It's a scam.
- 31:51Kearns: a scam.
- 31:51Ryan: Art.
- 31:52Jon: is a.
- 31:54Kearns: I don't
- 31:55Ryan: It's not that they don't,
- 31:55Kearns: transactions.
- 31:57Ryan: they don't have that in arc Raiders.
- 31:58Right.
- 31:58Kearns: not like necessary ones.
- 32:00You could choose to buy extra outfits and stuff, but there's
- 32:03nothing that helps you with gameplay.
- 32:04Like you can't buy gear.
- 32:06That's good and stuff.
- 32:09Ryan: that's different though.
- 32:10I mean, when you're buying gear and like customization, but when
- 32:13you have to buy weapons and stuff, that's where you gotta draw the line.
- 32:17Kearns: Yeah, I agree.
- 32:19Jon: Yeah, I'm fine with bonus things being paid for in games,
- 32:22but like, don't let me earn stuff.
- 32:26I want to earn it.
- 32:26I don't wanna buy it.
- 32:27I don't even want like the pre-sale bonus stuff, like, let me earn
- 32:31it the way the game was meant to be earned and enjoy it that way.
- 32:36Ryan: I agree with that.
- 32:38Kearns: Fair enough.
- 32:39I like it.
- 32:42Ryan: Which kinda gets me thinking, is there any good reviews on this movie?
- 32:45John, did you find any good reviews on this?
- 32:49Please tell me
- 32:49Jon: I mean, listen, we're.
- 32:51talking, a movie that's, in the twenties on Rotten Tomatoes, so there's not a lot,
- 32:55but of course I found you a five star.
- 32:59Kearns: guy's gonna be unhinged.
- 33:00I want the B to.
- 33:04Jon: I mean, this is about the tamest of five star reviews you could get.
- 33:08I think this feels like it's a five star to balance out low ratings
- 33:12kind of review, but here we go.
- 33:14Five stars.
- 33:16I don't understand why this movie has 21% rotten tomatoes.
- 33:21'cause this movie is great.
- 33:26Kearns: Okay.
- 33:27Jon: That's it.
- 33:27Ryan: that was it.
- 33:28Jon: That's it.
- 33:29Ryan: You know what
- 33:29Jon: review.
- 33:30Ryan: this kind of gives into my idea, like if you saw the one in
- 33:342008 and see this one, you're like, crap, this is just the same movie.
- 33:37I don't care.
- 33:38But if you see this one first and then watch the 2008, it might be a
- 33:43different reaction being like, okay, that's how like the franchise is.
- 33:46It's the reboot.
- 33:48It could be in this situation.
- 33:49They never seen the original, saw the new one.
- 33:54Jon: I mean, maybe.
- 33:55Maybe.
- 33:56I think, I mean, I, like I said, this feels like a five star that's just
- 34:00trying to balance out the low reviews,
- 34:04Ryan: It was
- 34:04Jon: and most of the five stars sort of felt that way.
- 34:07Like, all right, listen, I didn't hate this movie.
- 34:09It doesn't deserve to be 21% on here.
- 34:13Let's give it a good review.
- 34:14I mean, if you like chapter one, you like chapter one, that's fine.
- 34:19This person did not one star.
- 34:22I have never been so frustrated watching a horror movie.
- 34:27The characters in this movie are unbelievably stupid.
- 34:31I can't even understand the thought process behind most of these scenes.
- 34:37Kearns: Okay.
- 34:38Jon: Which I mean it, that's a little over the top, right?
- 34:42Like, I mean, I, I don't, I don't think, you have to think really hard about
- 34:47most of what happens in this movie.
- 34:49You're there,
- 34:50Kearns: I don't know.
- 34:51They,
- 34:51Jon: ma masked dudes show up at the house you run.
- 34:55Kearns: like I said too, the first movie is more suspenseful, more home
- 34:59invasion, more like to creep out.
- 35:02It digs into the what creeps you out on a Saturday night at nine 30.
- 35:06You heard a bump.
- 35:07going after
- 35:08Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 35:09Kearns: the remake is more kung fu fighting.
- 35:14Ryan: Well,
- 35:14Kearns: I think
- 35:14Ryan: yeah,
- 35:15Kearns: I
- 35:15Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 35:16Ryan: no, no, you're right.
- 35:17Kearns: more scream, sprint sort of thing.
- 35:19And
- 35:20Jon: Yeah.
- 35:21Kearns: why people like it.
- 35:22It's in your, all right, so if you don't like that, if you don't
- 35:24like, they made that change.
- 35:25Okay.
- 35:26But then also if you're watching this movie, what else are you expecting?
- 35:31Ryan: so reading other reviews about this film is a lot of people notice that these
- 35:34main characters do not have common sense.
- 35:38And that was one of my like frustrations.
- 35:40'cause in the original, at least, there's common sense between
- 35:43the main characters in this one.
- 35:44You had certain situations where like, Ryan's got the
- 35:47gun pointed at the pinup girl.
- 35:50And if you're even writing it, I mean, if you're trying to build it up, then don't
- 35:53have him have the gun at the pinup girl.
- 35:56Maybe have him at doll face and shoot her.
- 36:00having the gun pointed at one of the characters for like five
- 36:03minutes and then get attacked.
- 36:04It's just like, what are you doing, dude?
- 36:06Where's your,
- 36:07Jon: Oh,
- 36:07Ryan: where's this?
- 36:09Jon: I can make that make sense because he's not a killer.
- 36:13it's different when someone's actively coming at you than you have this
- 36:18person at gunpoint, and now you have to make a decision to actually do that.
- 36:24Kearns: Guess,
- 36:25Ryan: self-defense though.
- 36:27Just a
- 36:27Kearns: And it could
- 36:28Ryan: devil's
- 36:29Jon: I mean, it is, it is, but it,
- 36:32Kearns: 'cause that is engagement.
- 36:34Jon: Yeah.
- 36:35it's a different experience though, like the, if she's coming, she's dropped
- 36:40the knife, you've got her disarmed now
- 36:43Ryan: Okay.
- 36:43Fair.
- 36:44Jon: I think his mistake in that moment is just not
- 36:48Kearns: now, right
- 36:48Jon: doing it,
- 36:49Kearns: up your
- 36:49Jon: you know?
- 36:50Kearns: You gotta take care of business.
- 36:51You understand?
- 36:52You gotta pull
- 36:52Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 36:53Kearns: Arkansas vibe when you get into that situation right there.
- 36:59Jon: Now.
- 37:00Ryan: Agreed.
- 37:00Jon: All that said, I found somebody who hated this movie probably more than us.
- 37:05Kearns: I don't
- 37:06Ryan: Ooh, I'll accept a half star.
- 37:08Kearns: it for what it is.
- 37:10like that
- 37:10Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 37:10Kearns: you really can't stand, but you're like, you made your peace with it.
- 37:15Yeah.
- 37:16Jon: Half Star.
- 37:19The story lacked any originality.
- 37:22The characters were so unlikeable, especially the guy, the pair of them
- 37:28making stupid decisions constantly.
- 37:31A movie using the same old horror tropes, run through the woods, trip over
- 37:37a twig, et cetera, jump scares that, failed to serve their intended purpose.
- 37:42Just a waste of 90 minutes really.
- 37:46Ryan: Hm.
- 37:47Okay.
- 37:47Well, I, yeah, I was gonna say it wasn't 90 minutes too, too long for
- 37:52you, like how the last movie was for me.
- 37:55Um, I, you know.
- 37:57Kearns: I mean, I, I'm having a difficult time defending this movie as well.
- 38:00If you like the purge, if you like, um, if you like movies like us and
- 38:05things like that, this will appeal to
- 38:07Jon: Mm.
- 38:07Kearns: that vibe to it.
- 38:08If you
- 38:08Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 38:09Kearns: love those kinds of movies and you're going into this thinking, you're
- 38:12getting some deep meaning or something like that, you're going the wrong way.
- 38:16This is a, ride.
- 38:17You paid for the ticket.
- 38:18You go around the loop and then you get off
- 38:20Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 38:22Yeah.
- 38:23Yeah.
- 38:23I mean, you know the notes that this is gonna hit, pretty much remake
- 38:27or not you, like right from the opening, you know what this is gonna
- 38:31be, you know how this is gonna go.
- 38:33And there's been a bunch of movies like this lately and they
- 38:38just sort of are what they are.
- 38:40Ryan: It's that whole, we're in that whole thing, that whole circle of reboots,
- 38:46remakes, you know, trying to like get the attention of an, yeah, I mean, still
- 38:52trying to get the attention of audiences.
- 38:54'cause now it's like, all right, so we see this, like I was in high school when
- 38:58this came out, you know, a few years later you get a sequel and now we're going to a
- 39:03new generation trying it all over again.
- 39:05To succeed.
- 39:07They just, again, we talk about it, give us some originality, give us something
- 39:13Kearns: I'm
- 39:13Ryan: different,
- 39:14Kearns: The
- 39:14Ryan: you know?
- 39:15Kearns: used to be worrying about box office flop and then you'd get movies
- 39:18like, I don't know, dirty dancing.
- 39:20And
- 39:21Ryan: Yeah.
- 39:22Kearns: better examples than that that you guys can throw out that do great on VHS.
- 39:27princess Bribe.
- 39:28Ryan: Wish master.
- 39:29Kearns: Finally a horror movie.
- 39:30Um, Candyman too, probably presumably.
- 39:33Ryan: I'm trying to.
- 39:33Kearns: that sort of issue that they would, do anything
- 39:36to avoid a box office flop.
- 39:39now you really don't need to have a huge box office to make money with a
- 39:43picture, with a picture like an old
- 39:46Jon: No.
- 39:47Kearns: with a movie.
- 39:49So I don't see why they're not taking more risks.
- 39:51Netflix alone should be pumping out seven, 10
- 39:55Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 39:55Kearns: that are kind of risky.
- 39:57Ryan: Yep.
- 39:58Jon: with the number of services that need content.
- 40:03You would think there would be more risks than there are.
- 40:06They just never get the, publicity that other things get.
- 40:10You can, go through, Netflix and find a train dreams.
- 40:14You can go through
- 40:15Kearns: Yeah.
- 40:16Jon: Hulu and find whatever they're like.
- 40:18They all, it's all there.
- 40:20There's just nobody bringing it out.
- 40:23Kearns: the thing is, alright, so now we don't have TV commercials
- 40:26to rely on 'cause obviously you're watching Netflix or HBO or whatever.
- 40:31So I would've loved to have known that Train Dreams existed
- 40:35even before it came out.
- 40:36I stumbled upon it, looked at the synopsis, saw that the
- 40:39imagery looked really cool.
- 40:41I was like, ah, I'll watch this.
- 40:42And then it ruined my whole night be,
- 40:45Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 40:46Kearns: to see more, movie marketing money going out to, social media and you
- 40:51Jon: Yeah.
- 40:51Kearns: to spend much on it.
- 40:52Get 17 influencers to share a few videos.
- 40:56Ryan: Yeah.
- 40:57Jon: I've said to you guys, I don't know if I've said it on
- 40:59the show, but I think Netflix botched the Frankenstein marketing.
- 41:03I think that's why it's not like a runaway or even, even really a
- 41:07favorite for any of the awards.
- 41:09It's just sort of nominated.
- 41:11They didn't, do what they should have done with that movie after it was released.
- 41:15Ryan: they didn't.
- 41:16they'll,
- 41:17Jon: They got it out, they got it out, they got the clicks, and
- 41:20that's what they were going for.
- 41:22Ryan: like,
- 41:22Kearns: they moved on to Stranger Things hype, the wor.
- 41:25Ryan: yep.
- 41:26Kearns: that out after Stranger Things.
- 41:27Actually, Del Toro should have known that.
- 41:29Seen
- 41:29Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 41:31Ryan: I
- 41:32Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 41:32Ryan: to get it in contention for award season, which it is of course, but it's
- 41:35Jon: Yeah.
- 41:36Yeah.
- 41:37And then, and that's sort of the problem.
- 41:39If you, push it to, like, say now, by the time you get to next Year's Academy
- 41:45Awards, it kind of gets forgotten.
- 41:47Like there are instances, but it happens a lot.
- 41:50That movies released in the first quarter of the year get forgotten in the end.
- 41:56So I think they've recognized what Frankenstein would be and
- 42:00you couldn't push it a full year because then you start to get the,
- 42:03oh boy, this was delayed for a year.
- 42:05It's gonna stink.
- 42:07Kearns: luckily the strangers 2024 chapter one is not gonna have that problem 'cause
- 42:12it was a nominated for Squat Didly.
- 42:15But it is nice to see that horror movies are being nominated
- 42:18in the big categories again,
- 42:21Jon: Absolutely.
- 42:21Kearns: Frankenstein sinners.
- 42:23Jon: Ab
- 42:25Kearns: was there a third one that got a, no.
- 42:28Not best picture, but for something.
- 42:31Jon: something.
- 42:32Um, weapons got, uh, supporting actors numb.
- 42:36Um.
- 42:38Begonia, I know people are gonna say Begonia is horror adjacent.
- 42:42It definitely has some elements that are similar to, you know,
- 42:46some things that could happen in a stranger's movie, but, you know,
- 42:50it's not, it's, it's got a little of that, but it's not a horror movie.
- 42:54Kearns: probably tonight.
- 42:55Jon: Good use of your time tonight.
- 42:57Kearns: Well,
- 42:58Ryan: A Pagon.
- 43:00Jon: Yeah.
- 43:01Kearns: that off to you, Ryan.
- 43:02I believe
- 43:03Ryan: Yes.
- 43:03I just.
- 43:03Kearns: the rotation.
- 43:05Ryan: Watching one battle after another yesterday.
- 43:08I, I need to see Paonia one battle after another was great, but that
- 43:12they did that correctly with the, uh, advertising and everything.
- 43:16They released it, they did a, release.
- 43:19Right.
- 43:21Jon: Well, they, but not only did they do a physical release, they did a rushed
- 43:25physical release just so it's out there.
- 43:27So people still remember it.
- 43:30Like the, release of, one battle after another that came out is Bare Bones.
- 43:35It's the movie.
- 43:37There's no extras, there's no deleted scene.
- 43:39It's, they just got the movie.
- 43:41Yeah, they just got the movie out so that you could see what's nominated so people
- 43:47can, you can sort of rally people to this cause and then, you know, I get, you want
- 43:54something more for a Frankenstein release and it's probably gonna get a, like a
- 43:59nice criterion release at some point.
- 44:02But you needed to get it out.
- 44:03You needed to figure out a way to get more people to see it and
- 44:06more people to talk about it.
- 44:08Kearns: Well, you know what's interesting is this is the first year
- 44:10after the new rule has been introduced as well for the Academy Awards, where
- 44:14you have to actually watch all the movies before you're allowed to vote.
- 44:17And I do wonder if that'll have an effect on this.
- 44:20And you know, they should.
- 44:22like disclose what order they watch it in that we can get some good data on that
- 44:25Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 44:26Kearns: you watch Frankenstein last, you always voted Frankenstein.
- 44:29It'd be kind of neat,
- 44:30Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 44:31Kearns: many people
- 44:31Jon: I,
- 44:32Kearns: vibe with it after watching it.
- 44:33I really do.
- 44:36Jon: mm-hmm.
- 44:36Ryan: of people
- 44:37Jon: Well, I mean, you can say that for a lot of the movies that are nominated, like
- 44:42One Battle after another, Frankenstein, bagonia, they all have audiences that
- 44:47are really gonna love them, but there's gonna be groups of people that do not.
- 44:52Kearns: Fair point.
- 44:53I can't speak to Paonia, but I know there's a lot of people
- 44:56who do not like one battle after another for the wrong reasons.
- 45:01Ryan: Oh,
- 45:02Jon: Yeah.
- 45:02Yep.
- 45:02Kearns: of a couple that didn't like it for uh, okay.
- 45:04Reasons too, but I liked it personally.
- 45:07I got what they were trying to do.
- 45:09I don't think it's the greatest movie I've ever seen or anything like that.
- 45:12Uh, John likes it more than I do.
- 45:14I know that much.
- 45:15Ryan probably does too, actually.
- 45:17Ryan: I, I do, I think it, it was done well.
- 45:20Kearns: fine movie.
- 45:21I didn't, I thought that maybe it, it had some identity issues.
- 45:25it was trying to be two
- 45:26Jon: Hmm.
- 45:26Kearns: in my opinion, and it should have just chose one another.
- 45:30Big
- 45:30Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 45:31Kearns: reference.
- 45:31I feel like if they lean more into that with Leo's character in that
- 45:34movie, you would've been Okay.
- 45:37instead of doing in and out, in and out, in and out, like
- 45:39the goofy revolutionary stuff.
- 45:41But this isn't an episode on one battle after another.
- 45:44So I'll shut up.
- 45:45Jon: So this is, where we like to give our own rating.
- 45:51What do we got guys?
- 45:53Kearns: Two stars.
- 45:56Two stars
- 45:58outta five.
- 46:01I'm always harsher than you guys anyway.
- 46:03So two stars outta five for this, for me.
- 46:10Ryan: So, I'm gonna be really harsh, and I'm just gonna say, hate half
- 46:16stars, but half out of five stars.
- 46:19So half a star out of five stars.
- 46:21I, I, I, you know what?
- 46:23Kearns: I was
- 46:23Ryan: just
- 46:24Kearns: than you.
- 46:24I was giving two because I thought it was like a jerk move to go below that
- 46:28Ryan: No, no, I, you know what?
- 46:30there's, there's no originality.
- 46:32You basically like what made the first one in 2008?
- 46:36So good.
- 46:37You just kinda rehash the plot for this generation.
- 46:40Listen, you wanna reboot something, you wanna remake something.
- 46:43And mostly this is a reboot and we're gonna, I'm gonna cover
- 46:46that 'cause that's my top five.
- 46:47That's, I'm doing top five reboots.
- 46:50Cool.
- 46:50You kind of give like a little, like you take a little something from the original
- 46:55and utilize it to your advantage or change it and you make the audiences or people
- 46:59who are coming back be like, wow, this case I wasn't wowed except when Maya got
- 47:05her hand like stabbed with like a, a nail.
- 47:08I was like, okay, that was a lot of impact if you're stabbing your
- 47:11hand with the nail and that's it.
- 47:16I mean, I was mostly complaining the entire time and on my phone
- 47:19waiting for this winter storm to hit.
- 47:22'cause I was like, I've seen this film before.
- 47:24Jon: in fairness, this is my second time watching this.
- 47:27I watched it in October, so I've now seen this, twice.
- 47:31I liked it better the second time, but that's z Liking it better the
- 47:36second time, gets it to about a two.
- 47:38I could be talked into 2.5, but it's, about a two for me.
- 47:43Kearns: liking, um, uncontrollable diarrhea.
- 47:48After you have
- 47:49Jon: It has its good points.
- 47:50Kearns: you're, you know, you, you're used to it.
- 47:53You know it's coming.
- 47:54You've got your pillow.
- 47:56Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 47:57Kearns: Yeah.
- 47:57Ryan: part.
- 47:58Kearns: So,
- 47:58Jon: You, no, you know, you're gonna be pretty emptied out afterwards.
- 48:02Like, you know, it's, it's all right.
- 48:04Kearns: You don't have
- 48:04Jon: It's alright.
- 48:07Like, I can, I can recognize how bad this is
- 48:10Kearns: bad
- 48:11Jon: a movie, but I know Ryan rates this lower because of how much he enjoyed
- 48:17the original, and I don't have that.
- 48:18So
- 48:19Ryan: Yeah.
- 48:20I.
- 48:20Jon: can, I can comfortably go a little higher.
- 48:22Kearns: nice perspective gathering right there, sir.
- 48:26Ryan: I, I that I give five stars.
- 48:28I'll give that five stars.
- 48:30Not this movie.
- 48:32Not this movie, but I'll give you five stars.
- 48:35Kearns: all right?
- 48:35I felt like too, because I also, whenever I do these and I'm being really
- 48:38harsh or I really glowy with a movie, I always try to factor in every other
- 48:43movie that I've ever seen in this genre.
- 48:46The broad horror
- 48:48Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 48:48Kearns: does feel like it falls into a two star with that,
- 48:52Jon: Yeah.
- 48:52Kearns: perspective.
- 48:53I get the half star though.
- 48:54That's, that's a statement right there.
- 48:57Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 48:58Ryan: Damn.
- 48:58Straight.
- 48:58Kearns: should have put some effort into this.
- 48:59You big dweebs.
- 49:02You hurt
- 49:02Ryan: Come on.
- 49:03You did.
- 49:03Kearns: You hurt
- 49:04Ryan: You did Diehard too.
- 49:05You did Cutthroat Island cliffhanger.
- 49:08Come on now
- 49:09Jon: I mean, it's Renny Harlan being Renny Harlan, I mean, this is, this is
- 49:16the movies he makes sometimes, he hits them a little bit better than other times.
- 49:20He didn't hit this one real well.
- 49:21Kearns: what?
- 49:22Yeah, well, they
- 49:22Ryan: No.
- 49:23Kearns: They, blew on it and he saw it said 2008 he said, here's your script.
- 49:28Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 49:29Ryan: He's like, how do
- 49:30Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 49:30Ryan: this?
- 49:31Kearns: redact this and, but anyway.
- 49:33All right guys, that's our, uh, thing on strangers.
- 49:35We got some top fives for you though.
- 49:38Ryan: Yeah,
- 49:38Jon: We do sometimes.
- 49:40Ryan: Yes, we do.
- 49:41And I'm stirring off, and like I said, I'm doing top five reboots, which, you know,
- 49:47I've, we've been talking about remakes, trilogies, reboots, the whole thing.
- 49:51I took it a little different meaning like, what haven't we, how, what
- 49:55haven't I talked about reboot wise?
- 49:57And we're gonna start off with a bang.
- 50:00Not my favorite at the time, but it is watchable.
- 50:03I do enjoy it.
- 50:03That's why it's number five, especially with the horrible remake
- 50:07of a nightmare on Elm Street, which followed, and that's Friday the 13th.
- 50:11it's a decent reboot.
- 50:12It does what it does.
- 50:13If you ignore the fact, and I, again, I was a senior in high
- 50:16school when this came out.
- 50:18I was excited for this reboot remake, and the whole joke was he
- 50:22was protecting his marijuana farm, which technically he is protecting
- 50:26a marijuana farm during this film, but they combine one, two, and three.
- 50:32They at least tried, you get, you know, produced by Shauna Cunningham,
- 50:36who originally like, Friday the 13th.
- 50:39He got Michael Bay, who's right off, you know, doing Texas Chainsaw
- 50:43Massacre, the remake, and he got Jared pki, who supernatural fame.
- 50:49I mean, you can't really beat it.
- 50:52I, it's just like, it's right in the middle.
- 50:55And it's doing something different with it than what haven't seen before.
- 51:02Jon: It felt too, TV for me.
- 51:04Ryan: Ooh, okay.
- 51:06Okay.
- 51:08I have to watch it again to, to get it, but I can see where your vibe is
- 51:11coming and how it's filmed and stuff.
- 51:13I can see
- 51:14Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 51:15Ryan: But I'll give you this.
- 51:16I thought this was gonna be tv, but it wasn't.
- 51:19And this was a nice little curve.
- 51:20And that's 2020 two's Hell raise reboot.
- 51:24I liked it.
- 51:25Um, after.
- 51:26Kearns: already.
- 51:27Ryan: Yeah, but it's, uh, it's, it's good though.
- 51:30It's, it's good reboot.
- 51:31Especially after reading The Hellbound Heart, which is the
- 51:34original book they borrow like Pinheads look style, the voice.
- 51:42in the book.
- 51:42It's a woman pen.
- 51:43It's a woman who's got the voice of a boy, which is very similar to this reboot.
- 51:48But also the fact like there's different characters involved.
- 51:50The lemon configuration changes, shapes, depending on that specific character
- 51:56until we get to the end where goes into the cube, which I mean, I'm waiting
- 52:01on a sequel still, but I don't think that's gonna happen anytime soon.
- 52:05'cause again, it just hits the nail on the head, But we are getting a game.
- 52:08And that leads to my number three.
- 52:10We've talked about this movie a couple weeks ago.
- 52:13I really loved it.
- 52:14And that's Candy Man, 2021.
- 52:16You can call it a reboot, you can call it a which is like a remake, se, sequel.
- 52:23It's everything and it hits it.
- 52:26And the thing is, Nia di Costa.
- 52:28She's an amazing director.
- 52:30We covered, uh, bone Temple recently.
- 52:33she's been delivering hits and I can't wait to see what else she does, And
- 52:37that leads to number two, is this, again, we're talking about reboots.
- 52:41last episode mentioned Evil Dead Burn.
- 52:43I'm excited for that.
- 52:45So that's why Evil Dead Rise is number two.
- 52:48done so well.
- 52:49Different vibes from the
- 52:51Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 52:52Ryan: like, know, you see the Neck Comic-Con, um, see,
- 52:56you see it in the cabin.
- 52:58Kearns: we're not letting that slide.
- 52:59I want to.
- 53:00I really do, but I can't.
- 53:01I can't.
- 53:03You did
- 53:03Ryan: If you, the second time it's been,
- 53:05Kearns: did
- 53:05Ryan: it's the second time it, then the Negro comm comma,
- 53:12Jon: That.
- 53:13Kearns: This
- 53:13Ryan: the Necro noon.
- 53:14Kearns: person.
- 53:15You can't even say the evil book's name.
- 53:19Ryan: I can easily open it though and read it, which is scarier in itself.
- 53:22But the neon, um, being featured in an apartment building instead,
- 53:29uh, gives it a little more flavor.
- 53:31Refreshens the concept and it's horror.
- 53:34And we're
- 53:35Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 53:36Ryan: recently, um, because me, when we saw Bow Temple, uh, Kern's mentioned,
- 53:41uh, we were talking about The Mummy.
- 53:42It's directed by Lee Cronin who directed Evil Dead Rise.
- 53:45And even though The Mummy, uh, we have, it's a 50 50 for us 'cause
- 53:51of Blumhouse, I'm hoping it's done correctly because of Lee Cronin.
- 53:56'cause I think Lee Cronin is a good director, but it's
- 53:59Blumhouse it's the, the negative.
- 54:02And anything with the Mummy title besides Brett and Frazier hasn't
- 54:06really hit the way it should?
- 54:09Jon: I mean, not 90 years.
- 54:12Ryan: I, no, not since,
- 54:14Jon: It's been, it's been about 90 years outside of Brendan
- 54:17Fraser that Mummy properties hit.
- 54:20Ryan: I was gonna say, are we going back to 1932, Boris Karloff, or 34 in Moap?
- 54:25Jon: Yeah.
- 54:26Somewhere in there.
- 54:27Somewhere in that range.
- 54:28Yeah.
- 54:29Ryan: Well,
- 54:29Jon: Way before any of us were Anything.
- 54:32Ryan: I, uh, fair point.
- 54:34Fair.
- 54:34But
- 54:35Kearns: They
- 54:35Ryan: this creature, this,
- 54:36Kearns: eggs of the child are in the fetus of the baby they're in the womb.
- 54:43So like your grandmother had your, if you're a lady like you were,
- 54:49you are the egg that became you was already in there the second your
- 54:53mother was developed inside of there.
- 54:55So that's, nifty.
- 54:56So there's a chance that your egg, egg that became you guys
- 55:00was around, that time more.
- 55:03More of a chance for John Ryan, you're the youngest.
- 55:06There's a shot for
- 55:07Ryan: yes.
- 55:07Jon: No, my dad was probably a thought when the mommy came out.
- 55:12Kearns: I
- 55:12Jon: Um, my mom was not.
- 55:16Ryan: Hold on now I gotta see the mummy.
- 55:18When did the original 1932 is the original one.
- 55:20Jon: depending on when my dad may have been in utero, my
- 55:24mom was not a thought yet.
- 55:26Kearns: in
- 55:26Ryan: Okay.
- 55:28Kearns: anyway.
- 55:28What a,
- 55:29Jon: Maybe
- 55:29Kearns: thing to say during the top fives.
- 55:31Let's continue.
- 55:33Ryan: Well that leads
- 55:34Jon: top five.
- 55:34Ryan: one.
- 55:35Number one.
- 55:36I mean, this creature's gone through the years and I really enjoy this reboot.
- 55:39Yeah.
- 55:40Tim Curry's still alive, but this is gonna be the modern day.
- 55:43It, part one and part two.
- 55:46I love how they take it from original book being in the fifties.
- 55:51They bring it it to the eighties.
- 55:53They bring it to modern time.
- 55:54And the thing is, is by doing that change, kinda rec like.
- 56:00It goes along with the audience.
- 56:02The audience is a better connection, I feel, with setting being the
- 56:06eighties into the two thousands.
- 56:11I feel like it resonates with a lot of audiences, the newer version
- 56:14of it, and, it's done so well.
- 56:17We got a show on HBO now, and it's, I feel like it's gone over
- 56:22what they expected it to be.
- 56:24I think they didn't have as high expectations thinking, oh, they've
- 56:28already done it, and it's grown further.
- 56:31when it comes to welcome to dairy, how it's becoming so expansive,
- 56:34I think it's leading into HBO, possibly doing a dark tower series.
- 56:40Kearns: And that, uh, would lead this episode to being like, I
- 56:44don't know, 10,000 minutes long.
- 56:46So I'm not even gonna talk about the dark tower right now 'cause that's bait,
- 56:49Ryan: That
- 56:50Kearns: that's bait.
- 56:51Ryan: beat.
- 56:51I'm actually, I think that's where they're headed.
- 56:53I mean, Amazon dropped the ball the lower the Ring show, and if HBO really
- 56:58wants to pick up the pieces, because I mean HBO getting bought out by
- 57:02Netflix, HB O's gonna have more shows.
- 57:06think it's, it's happening.
- 57:07And the idea of Pennywise going backwards in time.
- 57:11'cause that's the whole new gist, is he's going backwards
- 57:13in time to prevent his death.
- 57:15it's leading to a third part.
- 57:17So this reboot has been very expansive.
- 57:21It's just a rumor, but that's how they're going with it.
- 57:25that's my top five this week,
- 57:28Kearns: All right.
- 57:29Swinging to John, John top five.
- 57:32Ryan: And John.
- 57:34Jon: All right.
- 57:36I'm going back to masks.
- 57:38I believe I've done a mask list before, but I'm going,
- 57:42More obscure masks this time.
- 57:45Ryan: smoking.
- 57:47Jon: No, not Jim Carrey's The Mask.
- 57:49nor shares, mask.
- 57:50Kearns: that was another fantastic movie.
- 57:55Jon: number five, we're gonna start with a Jamie Lee Curtis movie, a
- 58:00group of kids celebrating New Year's Eve on a train it's Terror Train.
- 58:06it's three years after a group of friends pulled a prank, a terrible
- 58:11prank on a kid, and now they're on a train celebrating the new year.
- 58:16When things go south and they start getting off.
- 58:19and it seems like the past has come back to get them.
- 58:23Ryan: it?
- 58:25Jon: Uh, yes.
- 58:29Yep.
- 58:29Ryan: You know what?
- 58:30Jon: It's a nice watch.
- 58:31The remake not so much.
- 58:33It's a, but it's a good watch.
- 58:34Ryan: you
- 58:34Jon: It's a good watch.
- 58:35Ryan: say this, it's hard to come by on DVD now because as
- 58:40it's like outta print right now.
- 58:43It's one of those, but it's like, once it comes back, I feel like Vigar
- 58:46Syndrome or Arrow will do like a, a re-release of it because it's a, from my
- 58:50understanding, it's a decent slasher and
- 58:52Jon: Yeah.
- 58:52Ryan: talked about it before too, in the past, so it's like definitely on the
- 58:57Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 58:58Ryan: I,
- 59:00Jon: my number four is one that's come up before it's directed by Toby Hooper.
- 59:05It's
- 59:06Ryan: yes.
- 59:07I love the Fun House movie.
- 59:10Jon: So a group of friends decide to spend the night in the fun house at
- 59:14the local carnival, only to witness a murder committed by a man and a mask.
- 59:19but when they attempt to leave, they're stuck.
- 59:22They are locked in.
- 59:23There is no escape, and they are now the prey of the masked man.
- 59:28Ryan: The book is supposed to
- 59:29Kearns: Still surprised.
- 59:30Dean Koonz.
- 59:32the one based on Dean Koontz's book.
- 59:35That one's got some questionable scenes too, but it sounds like
- 59:40it's different than the book.
- 59:41The book has more than a masked man.
- 59:44Ryan: Yeah.
- 59:45Kearns: The book has a creature.
- 59:46Jon: Yes, there is more than a mask man, also.
- 59:49Kearns: All right.
- 59:50Jon: Yeah.
- 59:50Yeah, there's some creepy stuff hiding in there too, besides the mask.
- 59:55My number three is a movie called The Prowler.
- 1:00:01this mask is pretty good.
- 1:00:03Google the cover, you're gonna see a nice, interesting mask.
- 1:00:08so a killer clad in army fatigues is determined to reenact a brutal
- 1:00:1230 5-year-old double homicide on the night of the graduation dance.
- 1:00:19Ryan: It's very gritty.
- 1:00:20Jon: It's gritty.
- 1:00:21It's very gritty.
- 1:00:22It's very rough.
- 1:00:24It's also really good.
- 1:00:27It's really good.
- 1:00:27And my next movie's pretty gritty too.
- 1:00:29My number two is the original, not the remake, although the
- 1:00:33remaking was surprisingly decent.
- 1:00:35Also, it's the town that dreaded sunrise.
- 1:00:38And the mask in this is simple.
- 1:00:40It's, a sack.
- 1:00:42It's basically just a burlap sack mask.
- 1:00:45very similar to the original Friday, the 13th part two mask.
- 1:00:49so 1946 Tex Arkana, a hooded killer terrorized the town at night.
- 1:00:56The body count grows as the police are befuddled.
- 1:01:01you get a nice, like early seventies weird cast.
- 1:01:04you get Ben Johnson, who's in last picture show, the getaway, the wild bunch.
- 1:01:09She's, you know, someone you'll recognize when you see him.
- 1:01:11And you also get Marianne from Gilligan's Island, Dawn Wells, yep.
- 1:01:18Probably the only thing I ever saw her in, besides Gilligan's Island.
- 1:01:24Ryan: man.
- 1:01:25Jon: No, professor.
- 1:01:27I went through, his IMDB recently.
- 1:01:30It's hard to find a lot of stuff that we can pigeon hole into this.
- 1:01:35and my number one, 11-year-old Brooke Shields in a weird little
- 1:01:41movie called Alice Sweet Alice.
- 1:01:45when Alice's younger sister is brutally murdered, the 12-year-old is the
- 1:01:49prime suspect, then the body count grows and the question becomes, could
- 1:01:55a 12-year-old commit such brutality?
- 1:01:59Kearns: the Good Son.
- 1:01:59So yes, based on that film.
- 1:02:04All right.
- 1:02:05Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:02:05Well, no, this, the good son is pro more related, uh, based on this, this
- 1:02:10was mid, early to mid seventies also.
- 1:02:12Kearns: it based.
- 1:02:13I didn't mean this
- 1:02:14Jon: So out.
- 1:02:15Yeah.
- 1:02:15Kearns: My
- 1:02:16Jon: Oh, okay.
- 1:02:16Yeah.
- 1:02:17Yeah.
- 1:02:18Okay.
- 1:02:19Yeah.
- 1:02:19Ryan: You're number two
- 1:02:20Jon: I got you.
- 1:02:21Ryan: that dreaded sundown.
- 1:02:22I'm, I'm curious in that curious.
- 1:02:24In that film,
- 1:02:25Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:02:26That one piqued my interest
- 1:02:27Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:02:27Ryan: mentioning a western.
- 1:02:30Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 1:02:31I need a Western right now.
- 1:02:33Damn.
- 1:02:33Jon: It does ha It's, it's got a little western feel to it.
- 1:02:38It's not a Western, but it's got that, you know, that Texarkana, you know, setting
- 1:02:44it definitely has some of that to it, but
- 1:02:48Kearns: Cool.
- 1:02:49Jon: definitely.
- 1:02:50Kearns: That was our episode on Strangers one.
- 1:02:54Uh, you may not get to see us do chapter two, but the here was chapter one.
- 1:02:59Ryan: do chapter two and three.
- 1:03:01Speak grudgingly.
- 1:03:04Begrudgingly.
- 1:03:07Jon: Uh, maybe when they're both available, we can roll them into one.
- 1:03:11Ryan: Oh, you, uh, yeah.
- 1:03:12Kearns: We'll see how it goes.
- 1:03:13This was a big stinker, but anyway, that's Cino Mania, episode 58.
- 1:03:18We hope we'll see you next time guys.
