- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it is Thursday getting close
- 0:17to the end of the week. It is the 22nd of January.
- 0:21Great to have your company. How am I?
- 0:24Oh, what a lovely question. Thanks for asking.
- 0:25I'm going great, but boy, this is my second week of working
- 0:29from home of two weeks. So I get to go back to actually
- 0:32driving in my car to go to work and actually interact with other
- 0:35people, which would be lovely, but it has been quite a singular
- 0:39and focused effort over the last two weeks.
- 0:43I have been preparing material so that in a couple of months I
- 0:46can begin providing training for all the new chaplains who joined
- 0:50the Australian Defence Force, teaching them about mental
- 0:53health. Because who knew there aren't
- 0:54many chaplains for the background as a psychologist and
- 0:57experience as a chaplain like myself.
- 0:59So they said sure, and please can you write some material and
- 1:03share this with our new chaplain?
- 1:04So that is a great honour. But boy, I am up to my neck in
- 1:08writing mental health presentations and I'm ready to
- 1:11go back to interacting with humans next week.
- 1:15I promise I will never complain about having to get dressed up
- 1:18to go to work again. But here we are, and it's not
- 1:21about me. It is about finishing off our
- 1:24time in the Gospel of Luke for this week before our Proverbs
- 1:28tomorrow. And today is no different from
- 1:31the rest of the week. We will hear some parables.
- 1:34We will see Jesus in action, teaching, healing, and generally
- 1:38being awesome. So let's read together, friends.
- 1:41Luke chapter 18. One day, Jesus told his
- 1:54disciples a story to show that they should always pray and
- 1:58never give up. There was a judge in a certain
- 2:02city, he said, who neither feared God nor cared about
- 2:06people. A widow from that city came to
- 2:09him repeatedly saying give me justice in this dispute with my
- 2:12enemy. The judge ignored her for a
- 2:15while but finally he said to himself, I don't fear God or
- 2:19care about people, but this woman is driving me crazy.
- 2:23I'm going to see that she gets justice because she is wearing
- 2:27me out with her constant requests.
- 2:30Then the Lord said, learn a lesson from this unjust judge.
- 2:35Even He rendered a just decision in the end.
- 2:38So don't you think God will surely give justice to His
- 2:41chosen people who cry out to Him day and night?
- 2:44Will He keep putting them off? I tell you, He will grant
- 2:48justice to them quickly. But when the Son of Man returns,
- 2:52how many will he find on earth who have faith?
- 2:56Then Jesus told this story to some who had great confidence in
- 3:00their own righteousness and scorned everyone else.
- 3:03Two men went to the temple to pray.
- 3:06One was a Pharisee and the other was a despised tax collector.
- 3:10The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer.
- 3:14I thank you God that I am not like other people, cheaters,
- 3:19sinners and adulterers. I'm certainly not like that tax
- 3:23collector. I fast twice a week and give you
- 3:26a tenth of my income. But the tax collector stood at a
- 3:31distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed.
- 3:36Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, Oh God, be
- 3:41merciful to me, for I am a Sinner.
- 3:45I tell you, this Sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home
- 3:49justified before God. For those who exalt themselves
- 3:52will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be
- 3:56exalted. One day some parents brought
- 4:00their little children to Jesus so he could touch and bless
- 4:02them. But when the disciples saw this,
- 4:05they scolded the parents for bothering him.
- 4:08Then Jesus called for the children and said to the
- 4:10disciples, Let the children come to me, don't stop them.
- 4:14For the Kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these
- 4:18children. I tell you the truth, anyone who
- 4:21doesn't receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never
- 4:24enter it. Once a religious leader asked
- 4:29Jesus this question. Good teacher, what should I do
- 4:32to inherit eternal life? Why do you call me good?
- 4:37Jesus asked him. Only God is truly good.
- 4:41But to answer your question, you know the commandments.
- 4:44You must not commit adultery. You must not murder, you must
- 4:47not steal, you must not testify falsely.
- 4:50Honour your father and mother, the man replied.
- 4:53I've done all these commandments since I was young.
- 4:56When Jesus heard his answer, he said there is still one thing
- 5:00you haven't done. Sell all your possessions and
- 5:03give the money to the poor and you will have treasure in
- 5:06heaven. Then come follow me.
- 5:09But when the man heard this, he became very sad, for he was very
- 5:14rich. When Jesus saw this, he said how
- 5:17hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God.
- 5:21In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a
- 5:24needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God.
- 5:28Those who heard this said then who in the world can be saved?
- 5:33He replied what is impossible for people is possible with God.
- 5:39Peter said, We've left our homes to follow you.
- 5:43Yes, Jesus replied. And I assure you that everyone
- 5:46who has given up house or wife or brothers or parents or
- 5:50children for the sake of the Kingdom of God will be repaid
- 5:54many times over in this life and will have eternal life in the
- 5:58world to come. Taking the 12 disciples aside,
- 6:01Jesus said, listen, we're going up to Jerusalem where all the
- 6:06predictions of the prophets concerning the Son of Man will
- 6:10come true. He will be handed over to the
- 6:13Romans and he will be mocked, treated shamefully and spit
- 6:17upon. They will flog him with a whip
- 6:20and kill him, but on the third day he will rise again.
- 6:25But they didn't understand any of this.
- 6:28The significance of his words was hidden from them, and they
- 6:31failed to grasp what he was talking about.
- 6:35As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind beggar was sitting beside
- 6:38the road. When he heard the noise of a
- 6:41crowd going past, he asked what was happening.
- 6:43They told him that Jesus the Nazarene was going by, so he
- 6:47began shouting. Jesus, son of David, have mercy
- 6:51on me. Be quiet.
- 6:53The people in front yelled at him, but he only shouted louder,
- 6:56Son of David, have mercy on me. When Jesus heard him, he stopped
- 7:02and ordered that the man be brought to him.
- 7:05As the man came near, Jesus asked him, What do you want me
- 7:09to do for you Lord? He said, I want to see.
- 7:14And Jesus said, all right, receive your sight, your faith
- 7:19has healed you. Instantly the man could see and
- 7:24he followed Jesus, praising God and all who saw it praised God
- 7:29too. Oh Lord, let us never cease to
- 7:42ask you for what it is that our heart desires.
- 7:47Thank you that we hear your teaching about praying
- 7:49continuously and we see this wonderful story about you
- 7:53healing that beggar when he asks for his heart's desire.
- 7:57So Lord, I pray that you constantly remind us to bring
- 8:02our hearts before you in prayer, that we don't sit silently with
- 8:06what our heart desires, but we bring it to you.
- 8:10And Lord, this may not be a little magic formula where we
- 8:13say I want a new Lamborghini and pump their one isn't our garage,
- 8:17but that we continually to come to you with our hearts desires.
- 8:21And through that you are part of our journey and you shape our
- 8:25heart and you draw our desire back into you and your Kingdom.
- 8:32And we see your generosity and we see you participate in our
- 8:36life day by day. So may we always, always come
- 8:42back to You again and again and share our life with You so that
- 8:47you can share yours with us. You are a good and loving God,
- 8:53interested in being involved in our little daily lives.
- 8:58And so while that blows our mind, we thank you, the God of
- 9:02the universe who lowers himself to be beside us.
- 9:08You are the greatest and we love you.
- 9:10And we pray all of this in your incredible name, Amen.
