- 0:02Welcome to Impact Ready, a show dedicated to helping you elevate
- 0:06your impact in the world. I'm Steph Safra, your host.
- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with.
- 0:11Intention and energy. Each day, this is for those who
- 0:15seek to make life truly meaningful.
- 0:17Get ready for impact. Hey team, welcome to the show
- 0:23today. Oh my God.
- 0:26It is Thursday, October 23rd and we are celebrating 150 episodes
- 0:34of the Impact Rating podcast today and I am so freaking
- 0:37excited. I am stoked to be with you.
- 0:40I can't believe that I'm at 150. I don't think that this is a
- 0:46very big deal to you, but I gotta tell you, I, I'm like, I'm
- 0:51going to take a moment to celebrate this because I
- 0:55honestly never fathomed that I would get to 150 episodes.
- 0:59This started out as a project to start really just creating a
- 1:05discipline for myself to be talking about the things that I
- 1:08care about, to be talking about and discussing the things that
- 1:12have to do with impact so that we could do more of that, so we
- 1:16could have a bigger impact, so we could create some different
- 1:18kinds of influence out in the world.
- 1:21I also wanted to make this a discipline for my kids.
- 1:26I wanted them to be able to have something down the line where
- 1:30they could hear me talking about stuff that I cared about,
- 1:33something that would hopefully make an impact on them.
- 1:37And anytime I wanted to quit in the last year and a half, I'd
- 1:42think about them and I would think, why don't I just do one
- 1:46more episode? Why don't I just do one more
- 1:50short little episode this week? Because then they're going to
- 1:53have that down the down the line 10 years from now, 15 years from
- 1:56now. I don't know what the future is
- 1:58going to hold. I don't know what technology is
- 1:59going to be like. But at least they could have my
- 2:01voice and I can be talking about things that hopefully are
- 2:05universal and don't change that much, even though the technology
- 2:10and the environment and the train around them might be
- 2:12totally different. And so I wanted to do it for
- 2:16them. I also wanted to do it for you
- 2:18because for 15 years I was in a clinic practicing acupuncture.
- 2:23I'm still practicing. But I was listening to people in
- 2:28these one-on-one treatment settings telling me their
- 2:32stories, their life's worries, their stressors, their traumas,
- 2:37their health experiences, things that they held so dear to their
- 2:40heart. And I could see people.
- 2:42I could see the people we're struggling.
- 2:45And one of the reasons I really wanted to start these
- 2:48conversations was so that you could feel a little more hopeful
- 2:53in times where you were feeling incredibly stressed or down.
- 2:56So you could feel a little bit more excited when life was
- 2:59feeling a little mundane. Or maybe you could feel like the
- 3:03thing that you're working on so hard, it actually does matter.
- 3:06It's not getting lost in the void.
- 3:08The things that you're working are are creating a difference,
- 3:12and that's another reason why I wanted this to be out in the
- 3:14world. And so for all those reasons and
- 3:17so many more, we're celebrating 150 episodes today.
- 3:21In the spirit of that, in this episode, we're going to continue
- 3:25this little unofficial miniseries that I've been doing
- 3:29the last couple weeks on people in relationships and talk
- 3:33specifically today, how you are often one connection away.
- 3:40How you are one connection away from unlocking something in your
- 3:43life or getting a game changing opportunity or busting through a
- 3:48roadblock that you've been dealing with for a long time,
- 3:50whatever it might be. What I noticed, especially
- 3:55lately, is that people are so casual or flippant about their
- 3:59relationship sometimes. I think tech has done that to
- 4:02us. I think social has done that to
- 4:04us. Text messaging has done that to
- 4:06us. We don't try as hard as we used
- 4:09to with our relationships, with our friendships, with our
- 4:13connections, our acquaintances. We don't try as hard as we used
- 4:17to. We don't have to.
- 4:19We can just send a text. I'll just message them.
- 4:22I'll DM them. It's not a big deal.
- 4:24I don't actually have to go anywhere.
- 4:26I don't actually have to get dressed and put time into
- 4:29driving somewhere and show up and have a real conversation.
- 4:33People just don't put as much effort into their relationships.
- 4:39I also find that people are pretty casual or flippant about
- 4:41creating new relationships, about putting themselves out
- 4:45into the world with intention and seeking out people that they
- 4:50align with not only just in their values, but in their
- 4:53energy and in their dreams. People who lift them up, people
- 4:56who cheer them on, people who are smarter than them, who have
- 5:00different opinions. We are not as intentional as we
- 5:04used to be about creating new relationships.
- 5:06And I think that that's a disservice to ourselves because
- 5:10when that happens, we miss the chance to meet someone or have a
- 5:13great conversation with someone that would change the game for
- 5:16us. Because like so many things
- 5:20team, it often just takes one. For example, in the dating
- 5:25world, you might go on a million dates, but it just takes one.
- 5:29It just takes one to be your person in the business world.
- 5:33It just takes 11. Great idea when it comes to
- 5:37decisions. It might just take one big
- 5:41decision or small decision to change your entire life.
- 5:46So why would it be any different with our connections to people?
- 5:49I mean, we often don't pay attention to this, but if you
- 5:53look back at your life now and think back to where you have
- 5:58come from, I guarantee there's someone or something, some
- 6:03situation that all started with one connection, one person, and
- 6:10you never know who it's going to be.
- 6:11You don't know who might show up in your life years later and
- 6:14say, hey, you, I want you to do this with me or hey, you're
- 6:19perfect for this job. I was thinking about you or hey,
- 6:23I've been watching you for years and I love what you've been
- 6:25doing out in the world and I have a proposal for you.
- 6:29I think about this a lot. I think about it with my
- 6:33business in coaching. I think about how we connect to
- 6:36each other, how we ask each other for help, how we support
- 6:40each other through different things.
- 6:44I think about this with my wife. If you've ever read her book,
- 6:48Please Don't Send Me Flowers, you already know this story.
- 6:53But when I was working at a spin studio here in Portland, I was
- 6:58probably working there for about a year and a half when there was
- 7:01some rumblings about us potentially hiring another
- 7:07instructor. And this instructor was coming
- 7:08over from a competing studio. And I was pretty leery because
- 7:13this studio was kind of known for smack talking and had
- 7:17especially been smack talking us, our studio.
- 7:20And I was like, why would we invite someone into our culture
- 7:25who's not of our same vibes? Why are we inviting in the smack
- 7:29talking? We don't want that energy.
- 7:32And lo and behold, it turned out to be this woman named Leanne
- 7:36Saffer. And she ended up getting hired.
- 7:40And the first time I met her, she was taking my class.
- 7:44And afterwards she came up to me and she said, hi, my name is
- 7:47Leanne. And as the lure goes,
- 7:50apparently, I said, I know who you are.
- 7:57And we made this connection. It was like, hi, hi.
- 8:00OK, we know who each other are. And we became team mates.
- 8:03She got hired. We started riding together,
- 8:06riding in each other's classes. I asked if she would cover all
- 8:10of my classes for an extended period of time.
- 8:12Well, I went up to Washington for an externship, and she said,
- 8:15Yep, I'll cover them. And so she started training and
- 8:18starting to take over my class. Ultimately, she became a friend
- 8:23and over time it became very obvious to me that I was in love
- 8:27with this girl. And the rest is history.
- 8:30We ended up falling in love, getting in married, going
- 8:32through a slew of hard things together, navigating breast
- 8:35cancer together twice. And that connection happened 10
- 8:41years ago and my life has forever changed in the best way
- 8:44possible. I got the big love that I wanted
- 8:47and I didn't see it coming at all.
- 8:49Never would have guessed it, never would have predicted it.
- 8:53And that's just one example, one example in just one life.
- 8:57And you think about all the examples in your life or in your
- 9:01spouse's life or your kids lives, how all these
- 9:04connections, one powerful connection at a time.
- 9:09See so many of us forget that we're playing the long game
- 9:12here. We will have multiple
- 9:14relationships and connections in our life, people that come and
- 9:18go in different seasons, different types of friends, and
- 9:21you never know who's watching you, who's keeping a thoughtful
- 9:25eye on you and how you're interacting out there in the
- 9:28world. You think you're playing this
- 9:31linear game, but the game is actually full of ups and downs
- 9:35and twists and turns that are so complicated that you could never
- 9:38predict the outcome of a conversation or a chance meeting
- 9:43or an old acquaintance. I think about my friend Jamie.
- 9:49Jamie is one of the most badass people you will ever meet.
- 9:52She's the founder and creator of a program called Imagination
- 9:55Yoga that is yoga curriculum for kids, and that curriculum is at
- 10:00Nike headquarters. She's been in Head Start for
- 10:03years. She's been in the Department of
- 10:05Human Services. Her curriculum is all over the
- 10:09country. She's a coach for teens and
- 10:11kids. She's one of the best I've ever
- 10:13met. She's worked with incredible
- 10:15people all over the world. She's done some amazing
- 10:19projects. You know, when I first met her,
- 10:23September of 2000, almost exactly 25 years ago, she was a
- 10:29junior in college and I was a freshman just in my first couple
- 10:34weeks at school, going through rush to be in a sorority.
- 10:39And I ended up joining a sorority, Jamie's sorority,
- 10:42Kappa Kappa Gamma, because I thought if all the girls are as
- 10:45cool as this chick, that I'm in the right place.
- 10:49Well, ironically, Jamie shortly dropped out of the sorority and
- 10:54although we were friends, we weren't that close.
- 10:57But Fast forward 10 years, we start to run into each other a
- 10:59little bit more in Portland. We stay in touch and we start to
- 11:02rekindle that friendship. Over time, we start asking each
- 11:06other for help in our businesses.
- 11:09Last year, Jamie introduced me to someone in the Head Start
- 11:12community. And then all the sudden, the two
- 11:14of us are flying to a conference together to present to give
- 11:18workshops at a Head Start annual Institute.
- 11:22And this year we get to do it again.
- 11:24And how did that happen? Connection, One connection.
- 11:30I can't even tell you how many ways our lives have overlapped
- 11:33since then and how much she has helped me and my family.
- 11:39But I never would have thought at age 18, walking up that brick
- 11:43path to the sorority house, seeing her inside the door, that
- 11:47this person was going to be an integral part of my life in my
- 11:5230s and my 40s. Not just as a friend, but in my
- 11:55business, in my coaching, helping support my kids.
- 12:00That's the power of 1 connection and it's the power of helping
- 12:05each other, being willing to ask someone for help and lean into
- 12:10that relationship because guess what?
- 12:14People want to help you. They want the best for you team.
- 12:17They want to be of service to you.
- 12:18I know that sounds crazy, but people want to help.
- 12:21It's fun for people to make shit happen for other people in their
- 12:25lives. And when you are someone like
- 12:28that to other people, whoa, you're creating a a new kind of
- 12:33alchemy. There's some true power in what
- 12:35two people or a group of you or a community of you can do.
- 12:39If everyone in your inner circle of friends was always looking
- 12:43for ways to help each other and lift each other up, what would
- 12:46happen? You would become this
- 12:47unstoppable force that you never would be on your own.
- 12:53Now, why are we even talking about this?
- 12:55Because it's a perfect example of impact and the ripple effects
- 13:00that you can have in someone's life.
- 13:02It's the perfect example of how one event, how one connection
- 13:06can have exponential effects as time goes on beyond what you
- 13:11would ever be able to predict. And because in a time where we
- 13:16are surrounded by tech and AI and non people powered systems
- 13:20and experiences more and more every day it seems it's a
- 13:24reminder that people matter. Our connections matter so much.
- 13:29And if you are stressing or in struggle in your life, please
- 13:35don't lose hope. Don't let go or give up on what
- 13:39you want because you might be 1 connection away from unlocking
- 13:44so much in your life. I swear to God one connection.
- 13:49And I say this to encourage you and also to remind you that you
- 13:54can only see a little bit of the puzzle.
- 13:55We can only see a few steps ahead.
- 13:59We don't get to see the whole game.
- 14:02And if you can think a little bigger, if you can see
- 14:04possibility and be willing to put yourself out in the world,
- 14:09be open to those possibilities, then you put yourself in
- 14:13positions to make those connections.
- 14:17It's also a reminder that you never know who's watching you,
- 14:22who's cheering you on, who's looking up to you, who you're
- 14:26inspiring and helping get out of bed some days.
- 14:30You never know whose life you're changing, and you won't.
- 14:34You'll never know or see it all. That was hard for me for a
- 14:37really long time. I want to see it all.
- 14:39I want to know the impact. We don't get to see everything.
- 14:43We just have to trust it that we have an impact that's bigger
- 14:46than ourselves in our own small sphere.
- 14:49You're 1 connection away and you might be someone else's one
- 14:54connection. So be a helper this week.
- 14:57Shine your light, be bigger, be bolder, and don't be afraid to
- 15:02be excited about your life because that's the energy we
- 15:05want to put out in the world and that's the energy that draws
- 15:08people to us. The more people we draw in, the
- 15:11more connections we make, the more opportunity is available to
- 15:15us. So I just want to say thank you.
- 15:18I want to say thank you for listening and for being here.
