- 0:08Five minutes past the hour. It is the third hour of the Morning Show
- 0:11with Preston Scott Show five seventy nine. Great to be with you. We
- 0:16appreciate you joining us, whether it's on terrestrial radio or iHeartRadio all throughout the
- 0:21country around the world. And that is Jared running the program and I am
- 0:26so I'm like such a kid right now. Joining me on the show is
- 0:31season ten winner of Alone, Alan ten to Alan, Welcome to the show.
- 0:36How are you, sir? Well, I'm pretty good, but you
- 0:40know what, I live in mountain times, so it's six o'clock in the
- 0:43morning right now, so homely been awake for both five minutes, so I'm
- 0:46a little sleepy dude. I will take what I get and I'm grateful that
- 0:51you are willing to wake up early for us. Does it kind of stir
- 0:56something that you know that the new season is going to start being shown to
- 1:00people across the country and around the world today, I mean, does this
- 1:03evoke a lot of memories? Absolutely? Yeah, Like I was talking about
- 1:08that with my wife yesterday. It's uh, it stirs up a whole new
- 1:12string of emotions because almost exactly a year ago, while it was June eighth
- 1:17for me last year, you know, and you wait a long time because
- 1:22it's filmed so far in advanced and you have to you wait, you know,
- 1:26almost an entire year before it's actually aired. And Yeah, there's just
- 1:30that weird feeling of excitement and because you have no idea what the edit is.
- 1:34You don't know what they did, You don't know what story they're going
- 1:38to tell because we filmed, you remember, we filmed eight hours a day
- 1:42and uh, and they take you know, we have no idea what footage
- 1:46they're going to take from that eight hours or what story they're going to weave
- 1:51for you, you know what I mean, Like it's all legit, but
- 1:53they can definitely take certain aspects of your of your experience out there and kind
- 1:57of you know, knit story to suit whatever kind of goal they had in
- 2:02mind for you. So a little bit nerve wracking, Alan, I could
- 2:07like dominate your day because I would. I would pay money to sit and
- 2:10just talk with you about this whole experience, because I've been fascinated with his
- 2:15show since it started. But I'm going to break it up into three parts.
- 2:17Tell me about your decision, what, what what caused you to say?
- 2:23I want to try out for this. Well, it was mostly the
- 2:28people around me. I'm an outdoor education teacher at the high school in my
- 2:31local town here in British Columbia, Canada, and I teach outdoor education to
- 2:37a group of kids. And every Friday, we used to do carving skills.
- 2:40We were working on a walking stick and they implement all the bushcraft garving
- 2:46skills onto that walking stick and they can take it home at the end of
- 2:49the year. And while we were watching sorry, while we were carving a
- 2:53stick, I used to put on old episodes of A Loan on Fridays so
- 2:57they can, you know, watch old episodes while we're doing a little carving.
- 3:00It's just a good relaxing Friday activity. And the kids started saying,
- 3:04mister Genta, you should apply to that show. We do a lot of
- 3:07these things, you know, we do shelter building, fire starting, a
- 3:12lot of things that they are doing on the show. And eventually I just
- 3:15h and my sister in law actually sent me the application email. It's just
- 3:21like to do a casting call once year. It was actually on Facebook that
- 3:23you sent it to me, and I just sent this a little blurb of
- 3:27an email. It was literally four or five sentences, and that led to
- 3:30a larger application, and then that led to an interview and casting videos and
- 3:35just and the whole process of the application went for probably four months. So
- 3:39I just kept on moving on to the next step. Somehow. When you
- 3:43got word you were selected, What was your reaction, What was your wife's
- 3:46reaction, your family? Well, I was driving at the time, was
- 3:51I remember exactly it was. I was on the Cocaalla Highway going to Vancouver
- 3:55and I got a phone call and the call displace said New York, and
- 4:00I knew right away that this was whether this was a yes or no.
- 4:03I pulled over and obviously it was a yes. And just pure excitement because
- 4:09there's so much waiting during the application process, Like you do one thing,
- 4:13and a new wait another two weeks before hear you do another thing, you
- 4:16wait another two weeks. So even though it was kind of it was fun
- 4:19and exciting, it was stressful waiting and knowing because there's so much preparation that
- 4:26it goes into it right. But I know it was pure elation. I
- 4:29was very excited. I wasn't nervous yet. I was just more Wow,
- 4:32this is the end of the process. How exciting. I can't wait to
- 4:36start my preparation. Alan ten to with us he won Season ten of a
- 4:41Loon. I mentioned earlier in the program that when my wife, my wife
- 4:45and I watch it every year, we kind of narrow it down right away
- 4:47when we see the ten who we think is kind of made up to be
- 4:51a finalist and make it to the end. Alan was one of our picks.
- 4:56I'm very proud to say that I did him early on. We've got
- 5:00more to talk about the ten items. I gotta get to that next on
- 5:03the Morning Show with Preston Scott, The Morning Shoe with Preston Scott, they're
- 5:08gonna get a I'm just reach which knock knock? Who's Nash? On w
- 5:14FLA eleven past the hour, continuing our discussion with Alan tent To season ten
- 5:21alone Tonight, season eleven debuts. How's that for timing nine o'clock Eastern,
- 5:29eight o'clock Central on the History Channel. I will be I can't I can't
- 5:32wait for the new season. All right, the ten items, everybody gets
- 5:36the same basic kit in terms of cameras, batteries, emergency gear. Right,
- 5:44yeah, and then the ten item list take me through without going through
- 5:49the whole thing. How did you decide what ten items were gonna be chosen
- 5:55based on your experience? Allen? What what was the criteria? Well?
- 6:00I knew that my two passions and things that I'm the best at a are
- 6:05bowl hunting and fishing, so obviously I was going to take my archery equipment,
- 6:11so along. It's got to be a traditional boat, either a long
- 6:14bow or a recurve. I shoot a long boat, and you're allowed to
- 6:16take nine arrows and that that counts as one item. And you're allowed three
- 6:20hundred yards of monofilamon fishing line with twenty five just bare hooks, and you
- 6:26have to make your own lures and whatnot out of those. So I knew
- 6:29those two were coming with me hands down, and I brought an axe because
- 6:35you know, I had a saw. But the only really reason I brought
- 6:39an axe was in case I made it to freeze up, i'd be able
- 6:43to chop through the ice to ice fish because I remember a previous season a
- 6:46character named with me. I don't know if you remember her. She didn't
- 6:50bring an axe, and I had seen in my mind of her trying to
- 6:55break through the ice with her saw and she just couldn't do it to ice
- 6:59fish. So I said, Man, I've got to bring an act for
- 7:01that very reason. Obviously, I brought a sleeping bag, a pot for
- 7:06cooking I brought. I brought a Leavenmin multi toool. There was a knife
- 7:11employers on there. I really wanted the multi tool because making snares and making
- 7:16krishing lures with my with my snare wire, I really wanted to be able
- 7:21to cut the wire easily with my players. Alan, Hell, how important
- 7:26you've mentioned a previous season watching what other contestants did. Had you watched all
- 7:30of the previous seasons and how much did that influence your choices? Well?
- 7:35I watched most of the seasons. There's a couple that I still haven't seen
- 7:39yet, but I'd say I've may have only missed one season just not making
- 7:45the same mistakes that some previous contestants made. And the big one for me
- 7:49was, I mean, how often have you have we seen past contestants build
- 7:55massive cabins, put all their energy into building the shelter, and then tapping
- 8:00out shortly after the build a shelter because they exhausted themselves and didn't put food
- 8:05procurement as their number one goal. That was one thing. And just some
- 8:09of the old players that had such a positive attitude, and I saw how
- 8:13that was so important not to let your mind go to those dark places.
- 8:18And yeah, so I kind of my brother directed me towards a little bit
- 8:22of meditation, just just very basic meditation to to help keep a positive mind
- 8:26frame, because when your mind starts going dark, you start convincing yourself with
- 8:31reasons you should hit that button. Because you got to remember, you've got
- 8:35a button on your hip, on a little on what's called the yellow brick.
- 8:39It's going to be with you all the time, with a go home
- 8:43button all the time. So if your mind isn't positive, it's it would
- 8:48be really hard to resist hitting that button, you know, because it's there
- 8:52all the time, and when it starts getting late in the game and you're
- 8:56and you're hungry and you're cold, and it's really easy to convince your to
- 9:00hit that button. Of the list of items that you were allowed to bring
- 9:05that you chose what one proved to be the most important, well, it
- 9:11would have to be the fishing equipment, because without the fish, I wouldn't
- 9:16have been able to sustain myself because I caught well, I think I caught
- 9:22roughly, as an estimation, probably over one hundred pounds of fish. Wow.
- 9:26With that fishing line so and the fish out there were big, so
- 9:30it didn't take very many to catch one hundred pounds, because the average size
- 9:33is probably between three to six pounds each fish I caught, I think it's
- 9:39one about eight pounds. All intent to with us, we got one more
- 9:41segment to go, kind enough to carve out some time. The season premiere
- 9:46of Alone on the History Channel is to night, nine o'clock eastern eight o'clock
- 9:50Central on the History Channel. And one more segment with all intent is the
- 9:54season ten winner next year in the morning show tell me fla on your phone
- 9:58with the ar radio app and on hundreds of devices like Alexa, Google Home,
- 10:03Xbox and Sonos soon Yesheart Radio station Alone the season premiere tonight, season
- 10:13eleven, nine o'clock eastern eight o'clock Central on the History Channel. Season ten
- 10:18Winner, how about this, Kirby. Shout out to you Kirby for helping
- 10:22make this happen. I appreciate you so very much. Alan ten to the
- 10:26season ten winner with me this morning, kind enough to wake up real early
- 10:31in British Columbia to join us this Morning Live, Alan. Was there a
- 10:37moment you talked about, you've got that button on your hip at the entire
- 10:41time you're out There was there one moment when it could have gone either way
- 10:46that you managed to push through that you can share. Uh, Yeah,
- 10:50there was one moment. I don't remember zas to what day was, Probably
- 10:54around day fifty. It got extremely cold. I mean, we don't know
- 10:58how cold it is, We have no way of knowing. But I woke
- 11:01up in the middle of the night and I was shivering uncontrollably in my sleeping
- 11:05bag and my teepee. And but at that point I'd probably lost seventy pounds
- 11:09and I had just no way of staying warm, and I was shivering.
- 11:13The inside of my sleeping bag felt like the inside of the freezer I put
- 11:18down. I put on all my clothes and cleaning my winter jackets, squeezed
- 11:20in my sleeping bag, and I shivered through the night. And there was
- 11:24a point where I was actually worried about my life that one moment, because
- 11:28I was so cold. And there was like three or four hours so morning
- 11:33when it was till it would warm up, and I thought it was getting
- 11:35hypothermic. And even if I did tap out of that moment, they wouldn't
- 11:41have been able to come and get me until morning. So I pushed through
- 11:45and I solved that problem. They didn't show it, but I had to
- 11:50heat up hot rocks every night and throughout the night to make it through the
- 11:52last sixteen days or so. And I had a hot rock on my feet
- 11:58like these are bowling ball sized rocks get up from my fire. I got
- 12:01one of my feet, one between my legs, and one on my chest.
- 12:03And every three hours i'd wake up, light another fire, heat the
- 12:07rocks again, and put them back in my sleeping bag. And that's how
- 12:11I made it through the nights for the last sixteen days. You mentioned weight
- 12:15loss give the before in the after. So I went in at two fifty
- 12:20nine and I came out at one point eighty one. So that's seventy eight
- 12:24pounds if my mouth is right. When you realize that you'd won, because
- 12:28you have no clue when or if anybody's tapped out, you just you don't
- 12:33know. You can kind of guess, well, we've got some people gone
- 12:35by now. But when that reveal happens. Describe that moment. Well,
- 12:43they lied to you. They told me we were having a medical check.
- 12:48I hadn't had one in about three weeks, so I knew that I was
- 12:50I needed to have the MET check soon. And the helicopter I heard the
- 12:54helicopter lad and the MET team came up and there you know, that took
- 12:58my blood pressure. I mean, and there was a blizzard. If you
- 13:01watched it the last episode, it's a snowstorm and they're asking me a questions.
- 13:05And the producers are really good asking you a questions that they know are
- 13:09going to be emotional, make you emotional. It was my I won on
- 13:13November nineteenth. It was my dad's birthday on November eighteenth, and he passed
- 13:18away in twenty thirteen, so he'd asked me a whole bunch of questions.
- 13:22Got me all emotional. And right after that, I was talking about doritos,
- 13:28how I was having all my food Fanca season, and then all of
- 13:31a sudden, my wife tapped me on the shoulder. She'd be waiting on
- 13:33the beach the whole time, and told me I'd won. And man,
- 13:35what an incredible moment When my wife and I still watched that scene. We
- 13:39still get very emotional. It's pretty powerful. And then there are all of
- 13:46the students that you have taught. Tell me the aftermath with those kids,
- 13:54Oh, they were, they were pretty excited. Unfortunately, it's summer holidays.
- 13:58When I won, right, it was right, except and there is
- 14:01no school, so everything kind of died down because it wasn't for you know,
- 14:05quite quite a few weeks, three weeks or so until I saw the
- 14:09students, so they had all got a chance to kind of get over the
- 14:13excited. You know, I'd seen most of them in town and whatnot previously.
- 14:16But no, they were pretty excited. They were pretty excited. It
- 14:20would have been better if the school was actually going on and I like showed
- 14:24up to class the next day. They all knew I was on the show,
- 14:26but they obviously no one knew how I did until it ended on August
- 14:33seventeenth last year. Over the years, we've seen some shows where they bring
- 14:39people that came close back together. If they ever offered you an opportunity to
- 14:43do this again, would you absolutely yes, as long as it's soon,
- 14:48because you know, I'm no spring chicken. I'm not getting any younger I'm
- 14:54already the oldest personet to ever win at fifty two, so you know it's
- 15:00going to happen pretty quick. You know, things aren't getting My knees aren't
- 15:03getting any better. If you did it again and it were in a cold
- 15:07environment again, what would you do differently? If anything, I'd build a
- 15:13smaller shelter so it'd warm up more easily. And I'd buy a much better
- 15:18sleeping bag. Yeah, I'd get a minus sixty rated instead of a minus
- 15:22forty. My sleeping bag was my weakest item. It didn't keep me warm
- 15:28very well. The nights were a real struggle. Alan, proud of you,
- 15:31brother, as just someone that admired the grit and the determination and the
- 15:37skills required to make it through it. Man, it's a delight to have
- 15:39you on the program. I count this a high mark for me, and
- 15:43I've done about eight thousand interviews on this show. Yeah, it's really cool
- 15:46to have you on the program, and I wish you nothing but the best.
- 15:50Hey, I appreciate it. Thank you very much, sir, Thank
- 15:52you. Alan tent To with Us Season ten, Winner of a Loon Season
- 15:58eleven debuts tonight on the History Channel nine. O'clock Eastern, eight o'clock Central,
- 16:04and yes, I will be talking about it twenty seven minutes past the
- 16:10hour in the Morning Show with Preston Scott
