Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to Inside the Tape with Greg Cosell
- 0:12Speaker 1: on Inside the Birds. I'm Jeff Mosher and of course
- 0:15Speaker 1: we have Greg Cosell.
- 0:17Speaker 2: To break down the tape of the Eagles last game,
- 0:19Speaker 2: which of course was Sundays thirteen to twelve nail Bier
- 0:23Speaker 2: in Buffalo. The Eagles win that game, but come out
- 0:27Speaker 2: with probably a lot of question mark, specifically with the offense.
- 0:30Speaker 2: And Greg, I'd like to do part one. You know,
- 0:32Speaker 2: we do this in two parts. Let us start part
- 0:34Speaker 2: one with the Eagles offense, because I knowing how I know,
- 0:38Speaker 2: you watch the tape and you take everything in context
- 0:41Speaker 2: out of it. I imagine this was a unique take what
- 0:44Speaker 2: tape watching experience from first half to second half.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, you know, we know how it is,
- 0:53Speaker 3: you know, the way people respond to this stuff when
- 0:55Speaker 3: the offense doesn't work. And the thing is, you know,
- 0:58Speaker 3: I thought that there were a couple of really you know,
- 1:01Speaker 3: well schemed to all design plays in the first half.
- 1:04Speaker 3: In the second half, you know, look, they were winning
- 1:06Speaker 3: the game. It was they were clearly controlling the Bills offense,
- 1:11Speaker 3: which by the way, is not very good contrary to
- 1:13Speaker 3: what people might think. They're just not very good. They
- 1:16Speaker 3: don't have very much talent, so you know, the game
- 1:23Speaker 3: was totally in their control. So in the second half,
- 1:26Speaker 3: they basically came out I think with the idea that
- 1:28Speaker 3: you know what, we're going to run the ball when
- 1:30Speaker 3: you control the game, and you know we're gonna win,
- 1:34Speaker 3: even if it's an ugly win. We're gonna win the
- 1:36Speaker 3: game because our defense is now playing at a pretty
- 1:38Speaker 3: high level. And so they ran a lot of their
- 1:42Speaker 3: normal stuff and it just you know, the Bill's defense
- 1:46Speaker 3: really played well in the second half. I mean, there
- 1:48Speaker 3: were a lot of missed blocks. You know, there were
- 1:52Speaker 3: things that that are not a function of bad play
- 1:56Speaker 3: calls or bad coaching. You know, Jurgens had a bad
- 1:59Speaker 3: second half. He missed the number of blocks in this game.
- 2:02Speaker 3: They just they couldn't get people blocked in the run
- 2:05Speaker 3: game at all. And in the past game, you know,
- 2:08Speaker 3: the Bills played a lot of three three, five nickel,
- 2:12Speaker 3: which is something they've been doing in recent weeks, given
- 2:16Speaker 3: that a lot of their personnels come back, and you know,
- 2:19Speaker 3: it seemed to post some problems. I mean, look, the Eagles,
- 2:23Speaker 3: if you take away the victory snap at the end,
- 2:25Speaker 3: they had seventeen plays for seventeen yards in the second half,
- 2:30Speaker 3: and that's after having thirty six plays in the first half.
- 2:34Speaker 3: And even though they didn't have a ton of yardage,
- 2:36Speaker 3: they clearly controlled. You have to pay some tempo of
- 2:38Speaker 3: the game in the first half, which their defense had
- 2:40Speaker 3: a lot to do with as well. So you know,
- 2:45Speaker 3: it was, you know, to me, when these things happen,
- 2:49Speaker 3: it's very very odd because you know, it's you go
- 2:56Speaker 3: back to last week and I realized people probably think
- 2:58Speaker 3: that the competition wasn't good when they played the Commanders,
- 3:02Speaker 3: but they ran a lot of their basic stuff. Their
- 3:04Speaker 3: old line was blowing people off the ball, and their
- 3:07Speaker 3: running game looked really good. In this game, they ran
- 3:09Speaker 3: a lot of their basic stuff and the old line
- 3:11Speaker 3: was getting beat and missing blocks. So, you know, it's
- 3:17Speaker 3: for me, that's a hard thing, you know, I know
- 3:19Speaker 3: the way fans think, Oh you know, and you know too,
- 3:21Speaker 3: you get it. I'm sure you get it all the time,
- 3:24Speaker 3: you know, but I mean, what did I don't know
- 3:26Speaker 3: what people wanted them to be doing. You know, did
- 3:30Speaker 3: they want them to just you know, start doing flee
- 3:32Speaker 3: flickers and gimmick plays? You know, that's that's not who
- 3:36Speaker 3: they are. And that's not how they're going to win.
- 3:39Speaker 3: That's true.
- 3:39Speaker 2: I think the issue, just my own feeling had in
- 3:43Speaker 2: the moment and even watching again, is sort of the
- 3:46Speaker 2: So the Bills have a reputation for coming back in games,
- 3:49Speaker 2: So you can't treat a thirteen to nothing lead, no
- 3:51Speaker 2: matter how good your defense is playing like like you
- 3:54Speaker 2: got this game in the bag, right.
- 3:55Speaker 3: No, they also run defense pretty much throughout the course
- 3:59Speaker 3: of the year.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Yes, so I thought to myself, it seemed like the
- 4:03Speaker 2: second half, and the problem I have is that there
- 4:05Speaker 2: are only you just mentioned seventeen plays, is not a
- 4:08Speaker 2: whole lot to judge from, right, especially like what I
- 4:12Speaker 2: guess the question sometimes I have is what's your objective?
- 4:14Speaker 1: What are you trying to accomplish?
- 4:15Speaker 2: We talk about this, it felt like sort of run run, pass, run,
- 4:18Speaker 2: run pass there at the end, even as that wasn't working.
- 4:23Speaker 2: So in my mind, I felt like I don't have
- 4:26Speaker 2: any proof that past pass run would have worked out.
- 4:29Speaker 2: They just didn't execute, right, I mean, for instance, so
- 4:32Speaker 2: that's that's your issuees like executon versus coaching and play
- 4:35Speaker 2: calling or all.
- 4:37Speaker 3: You know, So, for instance, how many times have we
- 4:39Speaker 3: seen them throw quick slants to aj Brown where he
- 4:41Speaker 3: catches it and runs for yards? How many times over
- 4:44Speaker 3: the last number of years?
- 4:45Speaker 1: Yeah, very often.
- 4:46Speaker 3: So they started their second third quarter possession with that
- 4:48Speaker 3: play and Bedford read it. He ate up rown on
- 4:51Speaker 3: the quick slant. It was a slanted flat combination to
- 4:54Speaker 3: the field which they run all the time and Bedford,
- 4:57Speaker 3: you know reddit, So does that mean it's a bad
- 4:59Speaker 3: play call? So is it a bad play call when
- 5:01Speaker 3: it works? See? You know, I never know how to
- 5:04Speaker 3: react to it. And I'm being honest, I never know
- 5:06Speaker 3: how to react to this stuff. You know, if the
- 5:08Speaker 3: defense makes a good play or or recognizes a particular
- 5:13Speaker 3: concept and then they play it, well, what does that mean?
- 5:17Speaker 3: So then then when they when it works, so is
- 5:20Speaker 3: that also a bad play call?
- 5:21Speaker 1: But it just happened to work right right? No?
- 5:24Speaker 2: I think that I would say if this were an
- 5:26Speaker 2: isolated type of game, we could have this discussion and
- 5:30Speaker 2: be like, people have to relax the fact that this
- 5:32Speaker 2: is the second time this year that they've had zero
- 5:36Speaker 2: passing yards. Yeah, I know, second half and probably the
- 5:39Speaker 2: sixth time this year. I think I ended up where
- 5:43Speaker 2: they had such a lopsided second half compared to first half.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Shows you that like, we may not have the answers,
- 5:49Speaker 2: but something's clearly not right. We talk about the offensive
- 5:52Speaker 2: line that's been an issue. The lack of a home
- 5:54Speaker 2: run running game is an issue.
- 5:57Speaker 1: It's just it's a.
- 5:59Speaker 3: Hard first half, you see. You know, Hurts made some
- 6:02Speaker 3: very good throws in the first half, particularly on third
- 6:04Speaker 3: down right, And how about that throw he made to
- 6:07Speaker 3: Smith where he was late in the down and he
- 6:09Speaker 3: drove a strike between the numbers, which you don't normally see.
- 6:14Speaker 3: How about the nineteen order on third and ten in
- 6:17Speaker 3: the second quarter. You know, he broke down in the pocket.
- 6:20Speaker 3: He actually dropped his eyes, which you don't want to do.
- 6:22Speaker 3: But once he got outside the pocket, he refocused downfield
- 6:25Speaker 3: and threw a great ball to Brown you know, would
- 6:28Speaker 3: adjusted his route. So, I mean, you know, there were
- 6:31Speaker 3: good plays that were made. It's so hard to know
- 6:35Speaker 3: why they're not made in the second half. I mean,
- 6:38Speaker 3: and I'm just being honest. It's it's easy to rip
- 6:40Speaker 3: them that. And you know me well enough, and I
- 6:42Speaker 3: hope people listening know me well enough that I don't
- 6:45Speaker 3: respond like that. I'm not going to sit here and say,
- 6:47Speaker 3: well they stink. It's play calling, the game plan stings.
- 6:50Speaker 3: You know, those are those are meaningless statements, you know.
- 6:56Speaker 3: I it's just it's crazy that they had seventeen plays
- 7:01Speaker 3: and they went three and out on four consecutive series
- 7:03Speaker 3: and they gained seventeen yards. I mean, that's crazy.
- 7:06Speaker 1: And then it's crazy that it's happened twice that they
- 7:09Speaker 1: won both games. So yeah, yeah, there's.
- 7:12Speaker 2: There's clearly issues there that are tough to diagnose, multi layered,
- 7:17Speaker 2: but they keep happening, and that's been you know, I
- 7:20Speaker 2: think we all think that if the Eagles don't accomplish
- 7:22Speaker 2: the mission and defend their championship, it's going to be
- 7:25Speaker 2: because of their offense being very inconsistent and seemingly at
- 7:29Speaker 2: the at the stap of a finger.
- 7:31Speaker 3: I mean, you could almost argue, because Jalen hurts, his
- 7:34Speaker 3: numbers this year will end up being as good or
- 7:37Speaker 3: better than last year. Okay, just if you're just talking
- 7:40Speaker 3: about statistics. Yeah, so what is the difference between the
- 7:43Speaker 3: Eagles offense this year and last year? The run game,
- 7:47Speaker 3: run game, the run game, yep, the run game. And
- 7:50Speaker 3: I know, Barkley, Look, it's seventeen games now, so gaining
- 7:53Speaker 3: one thousand yards in and of itself is in a
- 7:56Speaker 3: great feet, but clearly the run game has been very,
- 8:00Speaker 3: very inconsistent and in some games non existent.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Yep.
- 8:04Speaker 2: So, yeah, and it looks promising right after the first
- 8:07Speaker 2: half there were some decent runs, and then yeah, and
- 8:10Speaker 2: then it was not in the.
- 8:11Speaker 3: And then coming off last week and again people talk
- 8:13Speaker 3: about the competition. You know, you thought that, Okay, this
- 8:16Speaker 3: looks like it's maybe it's on the right track, and
- 8:20Speaker 3: you know, a couple of runs this week, but nothing
- 8:22Speaker 3: we you know, nothing to write home about. Look what
- 8:25Speaker 3: what have we spoken about you? So many times? Last year?
- 8:28Speaker 3: There was a lot of games like this. Okay, well,
- 8:31Speaker 3: let's say it gets to be thirty obviously, the blocked
- 8:34Speaker 3: extra point gets to be thirteen to six. Then Eagles
- 8:36Speaker 3: get the ball, Barkley breaks a sixty yard touchdown, then
- 8:40Speaker 3: they get the ball again, they grind the clock, and
- 8:42Speaker 3: all of a sudden they win twenty four or twenty
- 8:45Speaker 3: seven to ten, and everybody goes home happy. The run
- 8:48Speaker 3: game has not done that. I don't think they've done
- 8:51Speaker 3: it one time this year.
- 8:52Speaker 2: No, it has not been the closer that it was
- 8:54Speaker 2: last year, hasn't been dominant, hasn't closed out games like
- 8:57Speaker 2: it did last year, what question, Greg, Sometimes you have
- 9:00Speaker 2: a question you just watch the tape and things pop
- 9:04Speaker 2: into your mind. Philosophically, strategically, are there anything did anything
- 9:09Speaker 2: enter your mind as you were watching this tape in
- 9:11Speaker 2: the second half?
- 9:12Speaker 3: Let mean again, overall, with few exceptions, the past game
- 9:17Speaker 3: for whatever reason, you know, has not really been very expansive, right,
- 9:23Speaker 3: And you know, there have been plays here and there.
- 9:25Speaker 3: I think there have been times where we thought, oh,
- 9:27Speaker 3: we're just starting to look good, you know, maybe we'll
- 9:30Speaker 3: see more things, But overall it hasn't been Although the
- 9:33Speaker 3: Brown play in the first half that was, you know,
- 9:36Speaker 3: a downfield play that set up that god or touchdown
- 9:39Speaker 3: was a really well schemed, well designed play, you know,
- 9:44Speaker 3: but you're you're not seeing much of that at all.
- 9:46Speaker 3: And what we've seen in the past where they went
- 9:50Speaker 3: outside and hurts hits either Brown or Smith on fades
- 9:55Speaker 3: or goes on the outside, you've seen very few of
- 9:58Speaker 3: those this year, right, you know, so and you can't
- 10:01Speaker 3: live on those anyway. I mean, they're nice when they happen,
- 10:03Speaker 3: and they look great, but you can't live on those.
- 10:06Speaker 3: And saw a lot of those, certainly in twenty twenty,
- 10:10Speaker 3: what year the Super Bowl year. We saw a ton
- 10:12Speaker 3: of them, the first Super Bowl year, and even last
- 10:15Speaker 3: year we saw a bunch, But you can't live on.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Those correct What did you see from Buffalo greg defensively
- 10:22Speaker 2: as far as strategically, formationally, anything that they did differently
- 10:25Speaker 2: than normal, or anything that stuck out to.
- 10:27Speaker 1: You that you thought was particularly effective.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Well. One of the things Buffalo does, and they've done
- 10:32Speaker 3: it in a lot of games this year, is they
- 10:34Speaker 3: whether it's an adjustment at halftime or whether it's planned.
- 10:37Speaker 3: That's something see, that's something we don't know. It's always
- 10:40Speaker 3: easy for people to say, well, that's an adjustment. We
- 10:42Speaker 3: don't know if they say, hey, we're going to start
- 10:44Speaker 3: the game this way and then when we get to
- 10:46Speaker 3: the second half, we're going to do this. We don't
- 10:47Speaker 3: know that. But they change up quite a bit from
- 10:51Speaker 3: first halfs to second half. That's something they've done in
- 10:54Speaker 3: a number of games this year, and they did that
- 10:56Speaker 3: in this game. You know, so you didn't see much
- 10:58Speaker 3: three three five in the first half. You didn't see
- 11:01Speaker 3: them blitz much in the first half. You know, they
- 11:03Speaker 3: did a lot. Now, maybe the score also dictated that
- 11:06Speaker 3: they were going to do that at a higher percentage
- 11:08Speaker 3: because they had to, you know, they had to pick
- 11:11Speaker 3: up the pace of the game, you know, because let's
- 11:14Speaker 3: face it, the Eagles defense is just far over match
- 11:16Speaker 3: the Bill's offense. The Bills don't have any players, you know,
- 11:19Speaker 3: they you know. And and the other thing which I
- 11:22Speaker 3: think really stood out to me, and we'll get to
- 11:24Speaker 3: this on the other side, but it also affected the
- 11:26Speaker 3: game is the Bill's O line is a mauling a line,
- 11:29Speaker 3: but not an athletic O line, and the Eagles front
- 11:32Speaker 3: is extremely fast and athletic, and that was a big
- 11:36Speaker 3: problem for the Bills in this game. So, you know,
- 11:39Speaker 3: the Bills couldn't really score. See people just assume and
- 11:43Speaker 3: you're going to start hearing this, you've heard it already
- 11:45Speaker 3: about this being Josh Allen's best chance. He's not on
- 11:48Speaker 3: a great team. Yeah, you know, people think that Josh
- 11:51Speaker 3: Allen is going to make up for everything else that happened,
- 11:54Speaker 3: you know, for everything else. It doesn't work like that.
- 11:58Speaker 3: So you know, of course, if he hits that throw
- 12:00Speaker 3: at the end which blew me away that he missed
- 12:02Speaker 3: on the two point conversion, they win the game and
- 12:04Speaker 3: Josh Allen a superman. And you know, the the narrative continues,
- 12:07Speaker 3: but to miss it and he missed it badly, which
- 12:10Speaker 3: I still don't understand it.
- 12:11Speaker 1: But I can explain it to you. Greg.
- 12:13Speaker 2: We talk about this all the time. I just don't
- 12:15Speaker 2: know why you refuse to understand this. But the Eagles
- 12:18Speaker 2: know how to win.
- 12:20Speaker 3: There you go.
- 12:20Speaker 1: I totally forgot how to win.
- 12:22Speaker 3: I totally forgot. That's a great point. That's a great point.
- 12:26Speaker 3: They know how to win.
- 12:27Speaker 2: I mean, Jillen Carter unbelievably blocks the pat which courts
- 12:32Speaker 2: is the Bills that have to go for two.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Because Jilli Carter knows how to win. That's you know,
- 12:36Speaker 1: you know how it.
- 12:37Speaker 3: Is pretty simple. Yeah, that's interesting.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Can you go in more into the three three five though,
- 12:42Speaker 2: that the bills you said did and what what that
- 12:44Speaker 2: does for them? Because I think people might think they
- 12:46Speaker 2: only play three three down players.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Three linebackers, so it gives them more speedy. They spied
- 12:53Speaker 3: on Hurts at times with Thompson, with Williams Uh. You know,
- 12:58Speaker 3: obviously they they can now do that with a bet
- 13:00Speaker 3: or athlete, and you know it's something they've done, you know,
- 13:04Speaker 3: quite a bit over the years. They go to a
- 13:06Speaker 3: three three five I guess when they feel that it's necessary,
- 13:09Speaker 3: obviously gives them, as I said, more speed, more you know,
- 13:13Speaker 3: they can do more things from it than in their
- 13:15Speaker 3: four two five nickel So you know, like I said,
- 13:18Speaker 3: I've seen them do it before. So you know, whether
- 13:21Speaker 3: they there was an adjustment or whether they just planned
- 13:23Speaker 3: on doing that anyway, we don't know the answer to that.
- 13:26Speaker 2: How do you think guys like Bosa did as far
- 13:29Speaker 2: as just applying pressure? Who's their other guy at Panessa?
- 13:32Speaker 2: So yeah, Russ, how do they look against an Eagles
- 13:35Speaker 2: offensive line?
- 13:37Speaker 3: You know, I didn't feel like they put on it.
- 13:39Speaker 3: They got a ton of pressure. You know, there were
- 13:41Speaker 3: a couple of times where I thought, you haven't left
- 13:43Speaker 3: the pocket prematurely. But you know, I think he does
- 13:45Speaker 3: that in every game. So I don't think that's in
- 13:47Speaker 3: oh my god. You know, I think quarterbacks who can
- 13:50Speaker 3: move tend to do that on occasion in every game.
- 13:52Speaker 3: You know, It's just the way they're built or the
- 13:54Speaker 3: way they play. So I don't view that as oh
- 13:57Speaker 3: my god, look at what Jalen Hurts did. But you know,
- 14:01Speaker 3: he always ran out to his right and then he
- 14:03Speaker 3: had a lot of throwaways, I'm sure for a lot
- 14:04Speaker 3: of fans. He brought back some bad memories because you know,
- 14:08Speaker 3: when he's not playing, well, what does he do? He
- 14:10Speaker 3: runs to his right and throws it away.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Yeah, well absolutely, all right, let's take a look at
- 14:14Speaker 2: some of the plays Greg that you're highlighted your notes
- 14:17Speaker 2: that were interesting. You know, we're obviously focused on offense
- 14:20Speaker 2: on much of the first half. You had already brought
- 14:23Speaker 2: up that you liked the concept on the first big
- 14:25Speaker 2: play to aj Brown was.
- 14:28Speaker 3: The twenty seven yarder on second and six on their
- 14:30Speaker 3: third possession.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Correct, So we have that here.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Why don't diagno because it looks like the Bills obviously
- 14:36Speaker 2: the Hulls are under center and the Bills have a
- 14:37Speaker 2: lot of guys here on the line of scrimmage.
- 14:40Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean this was outside zone run action into
- 14:43Speaker 3: the boundary and kind of a mini boot by Hurts
- 14:46Speaker 3: to the field. So there's a misdirection element here. Brown
- 14:50Speaker 3: was in a cut split to the field and he
- 14:52Speaker 3: ran a great route on the deep over versus Bedford.
- 14:55Speaker 3: But the post safety Bishop was reacting to Hurtz boot action.
- 14:58Speaker 3: That's the reason you do that because everybody kind of
- 15:01Speaker 3: moves with the boot action and the post safety Bishop
- 15:04Speaker 3: did so he rotated to the field away from Brown
- 15:07Speaker 3: who was running his route into the boundary. So it's
- 15:11Speaker 3: it's a beautifully designed play and it just you know,
- 15:15Speaker 3: it worked out perfectly because you could see Bishop moved
- 15:18Speaker 3: into the middle because he's watching herts, you know, he's
- 15:22Speaker 3: the center fielder. He's watching herds. And then Aj ran
- 15:25Speaker 3: a great route, created separation. You know, he sort of
- 15:27Speaker 3: stare stepped, you know, right there, so and did a
- 15:31Speaker 3: very nice job of subtly pushing off, which was beautiful,
- 15:35Speaker 3: and he created space and it's you know, it's a
- 15:37Speaker 3: big play. It's a beautiful design play.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:40Speaker 2: And we've talked about their ability to create good play
- 15:43Speaker 2: action pass games.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Going under center.
- 15:45Speaker 2: It's certainly helped the pass offense put more than the
- 15:48Speaker 2: rushing offense for sure, going under center.
- 15:50Speaker 3: Oh for sure. And the Goddard play, you know, is
- 15:53Speaker 3: this the touchdown?
- 15:54Speaker 1: Yes?
- 15:55Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean this came out a thirteen personnel a
- 15:57Speaker 3: lot too. Was the straight I formation fallback. It was
- 16:00Speaker 3: ISO lead run action into the boundary. Goddard initially showed
- 16:04Speaker 3: that he was blocking the safety Lewis. Then he released
- 16:07Speaker 3: clean into the end zone where no defender accounted for him.
- 16:10Speaker 3: You see that a lot on these plays from the
- 16:12Speaker 3: one yard line because teams feel they have to sell out. Yep.
- 16:16Speaker 2: I feel like this is not the exact same play,
- 16:18Speaker 2: but kind of how the Seahawks won in overtime against
- 16:21Speaker 2: the Rams on that later or that two point conversion
- 16:24Speaker 2: where the tight end I think blocked first and then
- 16:26Speaker 2: he just freed himself up in the end zone and
- 16:28Speaker 2: and caught the pass for the two point conversion.
- 16:30Speaker 3: And then when I look at these plays, I watched
- 16:32Speaker 3: them so many times, Jeff, because I try to get
- 16:35Speaker 3: a feeling for like, who's got Goddard, which I assume
- 16:38Speaker 3: is the safety that's you know, in the end zone,
- 16:40Speaker 3: but his size are not on Guardard, which is very
- 16:43Speaker 3: you know again, you're thinking run all the way here
- 16:45Speaker 3: looking three tight ends a lot too in the full
- 16:48Speaker 3: back position, you're thinking run one hundred percent.
- 16:51Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, it does look like nobody. It looked like
- 16:54Speaker 1: two guys.
- 16:54Speaker 3: I think Bedford got him, but I you know, I
- 16:56Speaker 3: don't want to I don't want to knock Bedford if
- 16:58Speaker 3: I'm wrong, but I don't know who else could.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Take them right right by the way, Latto there as
- 17:03Speaker 2: a fullback, what did you observe about the usage of
- 17:05Speaker 2: Law two in this game.
- 17:06Speaker 3: Well, he only played six snaps and you know we
- 17:08Speaker 3: played They used them as an I formation foot They
- 17:11Speaker 3: use Gotter at times as an I formation full back
- 17:14Speaker 3: in the second half, but that's you know, they used
- 17:17Speaker 3: a lot to that way. I didn't get the sense
- 17:19Speaker 3: that it was something they truly game plan as being, Wow,
- 17:23Speaker 3: this is something we're really going to do and it's
- 17:25Speaker 3: going to be foundational to how we play.
- 17:27Speaker 2: Which surprised me a little because I thought with the
- 17:30Speaker 2: with the Bills down three defensive tackles, I thought they
- 17:32Speaker 2: might try to play a little bit more I formation
- 17:35Speaker 2: style H football. This is so I think this is
- 17:39Speaker 2: the fourth possession where Hurts really started to heat up.
- 17:42Speaker 2: This is the throw you mentioned to DeVante Smith in
- 17:46Speaker 2: a really really tight window, maybe the tightest window throw
- 17:49Speaker 2: he has made all year long, including that Chargers game.
- 17:52Speaker 3: This was the eleven yard right. Yes, yeah, this was
- 17:55Speaker 3: a big time late in the down pocket throw by
- 17:57Speaker 3: Hurts into a ZiT tight zone window on the hash.
- 18:01Speaker 3: Hurts actually went through his reads, then came to Smith
- 18:03Speaker 3: when he uncovered, and he drove a strike here with
- 18:06Speaker 3: velocity and ball location. This was a big time play
- 18:08Speaker 3: on it, and third down right, yeah, third.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Yeah you do You did you get a sense of
- 18:12Speaker 2: what was going on with the bills here, because it
- 18:15Speaker 2: looks like the Nikol is talking here to the safeties
- 18:19Speaker 2: about something and he starts he was really making a
- 18:22Speaker 2: lot of hand gestures there, almost as if he was
- 18:25Speaker 2: asking for something, and I wasn't sure.
- 18:26Speaker 3: Yeah, we'll never know that.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Okay, we'll never know that.
- 18:29Speaker 3: You know. The people who say they know unless you're
- 18:31Speaker 3: in their meeting rooms and know exactly what they're doing,
- 18:34Speaker 3: are just bessing. You know, they're obviously saying something, but
- 18:38Speaker 3: we don't know. Yeah, I mean, they're showing man, they're
- 18:41Speaker 3: showing a two man look, so maybe they're just say maybe,
- 18:45Speaker 3: like I said, I'm not saying I know, but they
- 18:48Speaker 3: end up playing zone. So maybe out of this look
- 18:51Speaker 3: they're saying, hey, in so many words, don't forget we're
- 18:54Speaker 3: not playing man, you know, right, Yeah, but they're showing
- 18:58Speaker 3: two man. And then they go to his own mm hmm,
- 19:02Speaker 3: because they're trying to, you know, make Jalen hesitate, which
- 19:06Speaker 3: he does, you know, because he's looking right and it's
- 19:09Speaker 3: not there, and maybe he's thinking because it's man who's
- 19:12Speaker 3: the receiver up top? Is that AJ? Maybe he's thinking, hey,
- 19:17Speaker 3: it's Man, I got the fade ball with my best
- 19:19Speaker 3: receiver and I'm throwing the fade and he looks that
- 19:21Speaker 3: way again. I'm just guessing now, yep.
- 19:25Speaker 1: Interesting by DeVante.
- 19:26Speaker 2: Right, it almost looks like he was making his way
- 19:29Speaker 2: a little bit around the traffic because they tried to
- 19:31Speaker 2: put a guy in front of right.
- 19:32Speaker 3: It was a good lights into the void in the
- 19:35Speaker 3: coverage and it's I mean, this is excellent by this,
- 19:38Speaker 3: this big time NFL throw right here.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:41Speaker 2: I like this angle from it at the end zone
- 19:42Speaker 2: because it showed you see.
- 19:45Speaker 3: I think he was looking for a J. I think
- 19:47Speaker 3: if I if I had to guess, I would say
- 19:50Speaker 3: that he was reading Man, which they showed, and he
- 19:52Speaker 3: was going to throw the fade ball to AJ. And
- 19:54Speaker 3: then when he saw that the corner bailed and it
- 19:57Speaker 3: wasn't Man, that throw wasn't there, So now he had
- 20:00Speaker 3: to come back and do something.
- 20:02Speaker 1: I feel like he would never have made this throw
- 20:05Speaker 1: last year or the year before.
- 20:06Speaker 3: A throw.
- 20:07Speaker 2: It's not between the numbers, but it's darn close, and
- 20:09Speaker 2: it's definitely between two defenders.
- 20:12Speaker 3: Who you know what I like most about this throw, Jeff, that.
- 20:14Speaker 1: He made it, planted his foot and threw it right, that.
- 20:17Speaker 3: He made it. Yeah, too often we've seen him not
- 20:20Speaker 3: think that these are viable throws.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Yes, Adam and I talk about this all the time.
- 20:25Speaker 2: We still get some people who don't like Jalen Hurts
- 20:27Speaker 2: in our mentions. But he has it when he plants
- 20:30Speaker 2: and throws. He has a strong He has a great
- 20:31Speaker 2: good enough him to make any throw.
- 20:33Speaker 3: Got a plus arm. Yeah, not at like Stafford gun level,
- 20:36Speaker 3: but he's.
- 20:36Speaker 2: Got a good arm right when he plans, got a
- 20:39Speaker 2: plus arm without question, sure when he's decisive. Now, this
- 20:42Speaker 2: is another good play where you felt he bailed early,
- 20:45Speaker 2: but he's still recovered and was able to make the
- 20:47Speaker 2: round play.
- 20:48Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, he dropped his eyes here. This is what
- 20:50Speaker 3: you don't want to do. He he dropped his eyes,
- 20:53Speaker 3: did what you never teach. And you know, fortunately they
- 20:56Speaker 3: were not able to sack him. He was able to
- 20:58Speaker 3: manipulate in the pocket. And as you keep going, you
- 21:02Speaker 3: know he drops.
- 21:03Speaker 1: Back right there, right is where he drops.
- 21:06Speaker 3: I can understand why, you know, because you see he
- 21:08Speaker 3: can feel that pressure off the edge. He can feel that.
- 21:11Speaker 2: I think though, where he probably could just refine a
- 21:15Speaker 2: little bit, is as that's around if he just steps up.
- 21:18Speaker 2: I know it's easy for me to say, but I
- 21:19Speaker 2: see other quarterbacks do it where they just work their
- 21:22Speaker 2: way up the pocket so that they can keep their
- 21:24Speaker 2: head up and they're.
- 21:25Speaker 3: Legally climb the pocket. Guy.
- 21:27Speaker 2: No, he's kind of like a shudder around it. Yeah,
- 21:30Speaker 2: just low does a little, you know, jittery move, which
- 21:33Speaker 2: he does.
- 21:33Speaker 3: So you know, he dropped his eyes, started to run,
- 21:36Speaker 3: then then got out in space and was able to refocus.
- 21:39Speaker 3: And this is another great.
- 21:40Speaker 1: Throw, really beautiful throw, great throat.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I only picked this one running place
- 21:48Speaker 2: the last player we're gonna look at in the fourth quarter,
- 21:50Speaker 2: Barkley gets stuff.
- 21:51Speaker 1: They're under center, Greg. I don't know if this one
- 21:54Speaker 1: sticks out to you. Uh, this is.
- 21:56Speaker 3: Goddar uh here too is the I formation fallback?
- 22:00Speaker 1: Yes, I information fullback.
- 22:01Speaker 2: So I guess I'm wondering what you think that what
- 22:03Speaker 2: were they trying to accomplish other than a forward run,
- 22:06Speaker 2: but in their blocking for this because there's a lot
- 22:08Speaker 2: of guys at the line of scrimmage, and I don't
- 22:11Speaker 2: think there's any like pulling or trapping here or any
- 22:13Speaker 2: manipulation of the numbers, right, So I guess the question
- 22:17Speaker 2: in my mind is you see this at the line
- 22:20Speaker 2: of scrimmage. Is this a time where you should either
- 22:23Speaker 2: flip your play, your.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Run play, or just call something else?
- 22:27Speaker 3: Where was this play in the second half? Jeff?
- 22:29Speaker 1: Uh Like? As far as what down in distance or
- 22:32Speaker 1: what quarter?
- 22:33Speaker 3: Yeah? Where? What? Yeah? What? What time of game?
- 22:36Speaker 1: Hold on? Let me let me check really quick.
- 22:38Speaker 2: It was minus minus three for Barkley, So I want
- 22:44Speaker 2: to say it was the third quarter, but it might.
- 22:46Speaker 1: Have been the fourth quarter. I will tell you. Yeah,
- 22:50Speaker 1: I know it was minus three.
- 22:53Speaker 3: It was minus three for for sae.
- 22:56Speaker 1: Quon there it was or was this the minus two
- 23:00Speaker 1: on second and ten and the third This.
- 23:02Speaker 3: Was the second fourth quarter possession. They're leading thirteen to six.
- 23:05Speaker 3: It was the first play of the possession.
- 23:07Speaker 1: It was that's right. And it's first and ten at
- 23:09Speaker 1: the thirty. Yeah.
- 23:10Speaker 3: So this is an outside zone toss to the field
- 23:12Speaker 3: from the straight eye formation with Goddard again the fallback,
- 23:18Speaker 3: you know, which Goddard is not used to playing, by
- 23:20Speaker 3: the way correct, So he has to block the play
- 23:23Speaker 3: side stack backer Thompson, which he doesn't do a great
- 23:25Speaker 3: job of, and then the backside stack linebacker Milano, you know,
- 23:28Speaker 3: makes the play, but Goddard didn't really square up on
- 23:32Speaker 3: on on Thompson here.
- 23:34Speaker 2: Yeah, but also fifty seven, who's the edge defender. It
- 23:39Speaker 2: looks like Cooper who is the slot wide receiver. Title
- 23:43Speaker 2: line of scrimmage is supposed to I don't know.
- 23:46Speaker 3: Yeah, it's kind of a pin poll element to this.
- 23:48Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think that guy's penetration slowed up Barkley
- 23:52Speaker 2: a little bit in the end.
- 23:52Speaker 1: And then like as you mentioned, not a.
- 23:55Speaker 3: Great well Barkley is you know what you're trying to do.
- 23:57Speaker 3: It's got that pin poll element. And Cooper is trying
- 24:01Speaker 3: to seal you know, he's making that a seal block
- 24:03Speaker 3: on Epinessa and they're getting you know, my Alta out
- 24:06Speaker 3: front and then Gottard out front, and you know, God heard.
- 24:13Speaker 1: I'm because I'm thinking like, even if Godard makes a
- 24:15Speaker 1: better block, it looks like fifty eight's got a clear path.
- 24:19Speaker 1: I just didn't know if.
- 24:19Speaker 3: The well they don't really have a blocker from Rolano.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Here, right. That's what that was The question I had was.
- 24:27Speaker 3: When you see not an ex guy, he's a stack
- 24:30Speaker 3: he's the backside stack backer.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Right, you just come over and makes a good play.
- 24:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean maybe it was just too You know
- 24:38Speaker 2: how we've talked about asking guys to make blocks that
- 24:40Speaker 2: are difficult. I felt like for Cooper in particular, that
- 24:43Speaker 2: might have been a little bit of all.
- 24:44Speaker 3: Technically, it's not considered a super hard block because you've
- 24:47Speaker 3: got the angle and you got the leverage. Yeah, he's
- 24:49Speaker 3: trying to see him inside so that my alota can
- 24:52Speaker 3: get outside cleanly, which he does.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Right, Okay, Well, the Bill has just made a good
- 24:57Speaker 1: play on it, I suppose.
- 24:58Speaker 3: But you know the and here's where we don't know.
- 25:01Speaker 4: Hey, it's that time of the year that everyone's trying

- 28:21Speaker 2: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans twenty
- 28:24Speaker 2: one and up.
- 28:25Speaker 3: And I'm saying this honestly, there's a lot of really
- 28:28Speaker 3: great quarterbacks who are not guys who change plays very
- 28:32Speaker 3: often at the line of scrimmage, right. You know, we
- 28:34Speaker 3: don't know if Jalen does. You know, obviously, when you're
- 28:37Speaker 3: in no huddle, the quarterback always looks like he's doing something,
- 28:40Speaker 3: but half the time he's just telling the guys what
- 28:42Speaker 3: the play is because they're in no huddle. What we
- 28:45Speaker 3: don't know is if Jalen is a guy that changes
- 28:48Speaker 3: plays a lot, you know, it's the first play of
- 28:52Speaker 3: his series. They may have said, here's the play, let's
- 28:55Speaker 3: run the play.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Yep, we don't know that, right, you know, so I'm.
- 28:59Speaker 3: Not gonna rip jail. And it's easy to look at
- 29:01Speaker 3: that and say, gee, there's a lot of guys on
- 29:02Speaker 3: the line of scrimmage, but we don't know the answer
- 29:04Speaker 3: to that question.
- 29:05Speaker 1: True indeed.
- 29:07Speaker 2: All right, So that's a look at the Eagles offense,
- 29:08Speaker 2: and on the next episode we will get to the defense,
- 29:13Speaker 2: which will be probably a much more than that.
- 29:16Speaker 1: They know how to win, that's right, they know how
- 29:18Speaker 1: to win. They won the game.
- 29:19Speaker 3: They remembered how after a couple of for good knows
- 29:23Speaker 3: that in the three game losing screak they forgot, but
- 29:26Speaker 3: now they remembered.
- 29:28Speaker 2: I love that stuff, all right, Greg, good job, And
- 29:30Speaker 2: again next episode will go through the defense for Greg Gsel.
- 29:33Speaker 2: I'm Jeff Mosher. You've been watching inside the tape on
- 29:37Speaker 2: Inside the Birds
