- 0:20So that last week, you know how we put our first episode out.
- 0:24Ever?
- 0:25Will we hadn't edited it?
- 0:27I honestly thought most people wouldn't listen.
- 0:30Turns out maybe we don't even need to edit the podcast.
- 0:34We got some quite good feedback.
- 0:36They're like, I love the unissed version.
- 0:38Yeah, it feels like I'm in the room with you.
- 0:40Also, if someone commented being like, sounds like you guys were going to have a scrap
- 0:44at the end there.
- 0:45Honestly, I feel like we were, I was like, let's, let's just wrap this up.
- 0:50So are we doing this, are we doing this?
- 0:53Yes, we are.
- 0:54But I would just say, I think you spring that on me.
- 0:56No, I think it's good to have health as we're recording.
- 0:59So I can't get.
- 1:02Sorry.
- 1:03Yeah.
- 1:04Well, I mean, look, that wasn't the plan.
- 1:07I was planning on editing it, but then I've done a last minute trip to Turkey.
- 1:13I'm, I'm, yeah, I'm now in Turkey.
- 1:16So nice.
- 1:17I would really like to not spend my Sunday editing.
- 1:19Yeah.
- 1:20Fair enough.
- 1:23And bless our beautiful editor.
- 1:25She's back on Monday.
- 1:27I reckon I might cry when I see her.
- 1:29I have like a list of stuff.
- 1:31I mean, same.
- 1:32Yeah.
- 1:33I like the poor thing.
- 1:34I'll give her one day and then I will.
- 1:36I don't know if I'll even give her a day.
- 1:38I've been like, Emily, I've got like a list.
- 1:40It's like Emily, Emily, Emily, Emily.
- 1:42Yeah.
- 1:43She actually, she listened to the non edited one from Italy.
- 1:49And she was like, I don't think you need an editor.
- 1:52Sounded all good.
- 1:53I was like, please come back.
- 1:55Please don't stay in Italy.
- 1:56Yeah.
- 1:57She's back next week.
- 1:59Thank you.
- 2:00Goodness.
- 2:01I know.
- 2:02Oh, God.
- 2:03I just had this moment where I was like, I feel like this summer in London.
- 2:09So many people, like I've got friends that are barely in London the entire of like July August.
- 2:16They're just constantly away on holiday.
- 2:19Yeah.
- 2:20And I was like, how are people affording to do this?
- 2:25Like it is really expensive travelling.
- 2:28And I just sort of had this moment of thinking, you kind of can't do everything.
- 2:34You know, you can't be super super on it with your finances and amazing with investing in blah, blah, blah.
- 2:40And then also be spending a decent amount of money on travel.
- 2:43Unless you're earning, you know, lawyer level money.
- 2:47I think it's what you prioritize, right?
- 2:50Like, I think there's travel in this travel.
- 2:54Do you know what I mean?
- 2:56I think there's such different levels of travel.
- 2:59And some places more expensive than others.
- 3:02I think, yeah, I think it depends what you value.
- 3:07And that might not be going out for dinner or, you know,
- 3:12you might put a lot of value on travel because you're young.
- 3:16You don't have kids or whatever the reason.
- 3:19But yeah, I agree.
- 3:20I think also just in London, the winters are so grim that, of course, everyone,
- 3:27probably like little raccoons or whatever, you know, gathering up their nuts for summertime.
- 3:35Gathering up their nuts.
- 3:39No, I know what you mean.
- 3:41But I just, I think I had this moment.
- 3:44I was actually sitting on the plane.
- 3:46So like, I literally, the flights were booked within, like the flight left in four hours.
- 3:51It was the most last minute non-organized chaotic on-brand escape that anyone's ever saying.
- 3:59Like, there's nothing more Sophie Hall, right?
- 4:01Then book a flight and have left within four hours, you know?
- 4:04And I realized that's not exactly the cheapest way to travel either.
- 4:08Like the more that you plan and the more that you do things in advance,
- 4:11then relief and give it a deals and that kind of thing.
- 4:14But I feel like I've been really prioritising trying to be financially responsible.
- 4:21And it's actually been really impacting my happiness levels to the point
- 4:25where I'm restricting myself massively from doing things with friends,
- 4:29from going out for dinners, for going on trips.
- 4:32Because I don't have enough to be doing that and having heaps of fun.
- 4:38And I think I just, I just got to the point where I was like,
- 4:41I actually, I think that I need to find a balance.
- 4:44It's not to say I need to go and throw caution to the wind and all of a sudden be,
- 4:50you know, spending all of my extra money on travel
- 4:53or all my extra money on going up for dinner or going to concerts.
- 4:56But I need to find a middle ground because being as restrictive as I have been
- 5:00in terms of like even last weekend, I did literally nothing all weekend.
- 5:04And I remember thinking, oh, this is good, this is very cheap.
- 5:07But it's actually really sad, like if you're not doing anything with friends or making memories,
- 5:12it can really impact your mental health.
- 5:15What in your opinion is financially responsible?
- 5:19Because you were like, I've been financially responsible,
- 5:22but I think that's your problem.
- 5:25Your definition of financially responsible is not spending money.
- 5:31Yeah.
- 5:33And I don't think that's correct if you get what I mean.
- 5:37What would your definition be?
- 5:39I think it's in control, not having financial blowouts.
- 5:46I guess having a plan, planning and being in control,
- 5:49that to me is financial responsibility.
- 5:52And whether it comes a balance of fun stuff and chill time.
- 5:58Yeah, and I guess maybe because I'm a person of extremes,
- 6:01I'm not the kind of person to love the grey zone, let's just say,
- 6:06or be very good at, like, for example, I bought a yoga pass last month.
- 6:13LOL, my shit chat about yoga, I feel like this has come up so many times.
- 6:17But pointers, I bought an unlimited and then all of a sudden I'm going every day.
- 6:21Like, I can't really do once a week or once every two weeks.
- 6:26It's either I'm doing yoga all the time or I'm not at all.
- 6:29And I think when it comes to money, I can be quite similar.
- 6:32So financially responsible for me is not going out and spending money
- 6:38on, yeah, on restaurants, not buying tickets to go see the sailing,
- 6:42not going to the theatre, not going travelling.
- 6:46Like, I have one holiday booked this year, which is for a friend's wedding.
- 6:50And I realise this is first full problems, like, how lucky am I to be going
- 6:53to Portugal for a wedding for five days?
- 6:55Like, amazing.
- 6:57But I feel like everything around it is very restricted and not in like a healthy way.
- 7:06You know, I just don't think that I'm getting the balance right.
- 7:10I got on this plane yesterday and I was reflecting on who I used to be,
- 7:15maybe as I got when I was very, you know, I would book a random last one,
- 7:19I'd take it to Turkey.
- 7:21And this was like Mexican sort of, you know, like back in our Sydney days
- 7:25when I left and I was just like, and I guess when I say financially irresponsible,
- 7:29I had no idea what was in my account.
- 7:31I had no plan, I had no control.
- 7:34I hadn't done a budget for what I should be spending on the trip.
- 7:37You know, like, I was really flying quite blind, let's just say.
- 7:42And I think that when I booked this flight, I all of a sudden,
- 7:46and I was like, do I wrote a little article on it?
- 7:49Because I just actually was feeling like quite emotional about the whole thing.
- 7:52And I thought I actually kind of missed that version of me a little bit
- 7:55because she was really fun and she, she prioritised memories and things that made her happy.
- 8:01I know it's important to be financially responsible in terms of having an emergency fund if you need it
- 8:06or thinking about putting aside even if it's just a small amount of your investments
- 8:10but I think I've taken it to the extreme where it's restricting myself from enjoying things.
- 8:15And, you know, when I stay home or don't do something,
- 8:19my immediate thought is, oh great, well that's cheap.
- 8:23Rather, you know, I don't know how to explain it.
- 8:25I just think it's really good.
- 8:26Yeah, yeah.
- 8:27I think it's been impacting my mental health actually quite a lot.
- 8:29And I would love to be able to find a middle ground between like Mexican's self
- 8:33and what I've sort of been like.
- 8:36I'm Turkey's self.
- 8:37Yeah, yeah.
- 8:39I think it is having a plan and having a budget, right?
- 8:43So then you know that if you are staying home one weekend and not spending,
- 8:49it's okay because you're saving for a bigger trip or you know that next weekend
- 8:59you've got something exciting, you know, like I think we can't live in a world
- 9:04where we say yes to everything financially, that's just impossible really.
- 9:10But I think there is, I think having a plan, for me having a plan, having control
- 9:16gives me much more peace of mind when I am quote unquote saving money by not going out
- 9:21or not doing things in the weekend if that makes sense.
- 9:24Yeah, because I think at the moment what's happening is when I then go and spend money on something fun,
- 9:29like for example this trip, I mean firstly I was like this is so last minute and just ridiculous.
- 9:36But the main hesitation for me was spending money was doing things.
- 9:42I felt guilty about doing something fun.
- 9:45And I just thought what is happening?
- 9:47Like I shouldn't feel guilty if you've put money aside for that.
- 9:51You know, like I have a little travel fund.
- 9:53I've been putting money in that travel fund.
- 9:55I think something there.
- 9:57So just spend it and enjoy yourself rather than sitting there like squirreling it away, squirreling it away.
- 10:03Yeah, thinking that it needs to just sit there for a rainy day.
- 10:06Because that's, and it's the same with all my funds, like I've put money in there for beauty
- 10:09so I can go and get my hair done but I avoid going to do that because I don't want to spend the money
- 10:13and it's just like, oh what's happening?
- 10:15Yeah, and I think that's a really good point.
- 10:18It's like you put money aside.
- 10:20So therefore you're not financially stressed when you go to enjoy those things.
- 10:24And when you enjoy those things, like when you do those things, sorry, you enjoy them a lot more
- 10:28because you know that you can afford them so that we can enjoy them more.
- 10:35Do you know what I mean?
- 10:36So I think, yeah, I think it's more working on, I think it's feeling guilty about spending money to be honest for you.
- 10:47Yeah, because you've got money there.
- 10:50Yeah, I think it's the fear of then not having enough, you know.
- 10:55Like so for example, this trip or planning a trip.
- 10:58I think the, because at the moment I've got about 700 pounds in my travel fund, which is about 1400 New Zealand.
- 11:05It's not a huge amount, you know, like it isn't a lot.
- 11:10And so I think there's the idea of, yeah, not feeling guilty when you spend it.
- 11:16But there's also the reality that there's not heaps there either.
- 11:19You know, I'm not making heaps of money.
- 11:21I don't have heaps of spare.
- 11:23So I don't know how to explain it.
- 11:27Yeah, I think it's also for people that like can't even afford a travel fund, right?
- 11:33I think there is, I think just the overarching kind of takeaway is that if you're putting money aside for anything,
- 11:41even if it's a house deposit, even if it's grocery.
- 11:45Groceries, yeah, it's, it's when you're, when you're for going things to achieve it at another goal,
- 11:54it's changing that mindset and being like, no, the reason I'm not doing this is because it's to help accelerate something else.
- 12:04Does that make sense?
- 12:05So it's, yeah, it's kind of reframing there.
- 12:09Yes, and I think the thing is though, it's like, I've had this in my head where I've been wanting to build up an emergency fund.
- 12:16I've been wanting to invest about three to four hundred pounds of my pay every month, which isn't a huge amount.
- 12:23But even that amount means that I'm so much more restricted and the things that I want to do.
- 12:29And I think that it's just what it's made me realize is if I'm only saving or investing half of that,
- 12:34and it means that I'm, it's going to take me twice as long to get to that goal,
- 12:38I would rather take that option than feel how I have been lately, which is actually that kind of miserable.
- 12:45That's sorry, you know, like, no, no, no, but it is.
- 12:48I think it's a really important point where it's like, yes, you can use the goal as motivation,
- 12:52but don't do it at the detriment of enjoying your life or feeling safe or having the things that you need,
- 13:00because at the end of the day, nothing is guaranteed, you know, we might not make it to 60.
- 13:06And if you spend your whole the next 30 years restricting yourself from anything fun or like frivolous or making fun memories,
- 13:15what's the point of being alive? You know, I think I've just had that moment of like, I would rather take more time
- 13:22and enjoy the process than be as extreme as I have been, I think.
- 13:27And I think that's okay as long as you realize, like you said, it's going to take you twice as long.
- 13:33Do you know what I mean? Like, you kind of can't, you can't have your cake and eat it too.
- 13:37It's like, if you want some money now, you're taking it away from your investments or your time and fund,
- 13:44or whatever it is, or your house deposit fund.
- 13:47But as long as you're okay with that, that's the kind of crux of it.
- 13:52It's like, what do you, and some people will be like, no, you know what?
- 13:55I actually love not doing anything and putting money in like a cheat and you know, like really hitting my goal sooner than I thought.
- 14:03And other people are like, you know what? No, I want to balance because I'm unhappy doing that.
- 14:07And so I think it's like as long as you're, as long as you, that makes me feel guilty because I do want to hit my goals.
- 14:13Do you know what I mean? It's like as soon as I hear that, I'm then like, oh God, no, but I do want to hit my goals quicker.
- 14:20But I want to go over that and I'm sad.
- 14:23Yeah, well then I think that's the answer.
- 14:27But then I can't get upset about not achieving your goals fast enough.
- 14:33Do you know what I mean?
- 14:34We're also in this world where it seems like everyone has everything and we're always missing out.
- 14:40And yeah, like it's, I don't know, like I was thinking next year, next year I almost want to be really restrictive and not travel anywhere and be like really, really focused on building a house deposit for a house in London.
- 14:57And I was like, could you actually do that work or like you say, would it make you really unhappy?
- 15:05And therefore maybe you push out buying a house for a couple of years.
- 15:10I don't know.
- 15:11Yeah, it's like, so I guess life is all trade-offs, right?
- 15:16You know, even us sitting here doing this podcast right now is a trade-off of going outside and enjoying the sunny weather or like there's every decision you make in life is a trade-off.
- 15:27And I think for me, that's been a real aha moment.
- 15:31If I'm spending time at work, it's not with my family.
- 15:35If I'm spending time with friends, it's not at work.
- 15:37Like there's just, it's the same with money.
- 15:39If you're spending money on this, then you're not spending it on that.
- 15:43And I think that's, you've just got to be, I guess, happy with the trade-offs that you're choosing to do.
- 15:51And perhaps it's always looking at the trade-offs that you've chosen and deciding if you still want the same trade-off.
- 15:58Because for me right now, I'm spending a lot of money on rent way more than I should be based on my salary.
- 16:08You know, like I'm definitely on the upper end of London rent and realistically should probably be spending about 400 pounds less than I am a month.
- 16:19That extra 100 pounds a week, what would it go towards and would it make me happier than being in the house that I'm currently in?
- 16:27Because the thing is it's like that was like a decision that I made one even six months ago.
- 16:33But always checking in and being like, is this still the order of my priorities?
- 16:38Is this still the thing, even though I know I can't have everything?
- 16:41Is this what I'm choosing to put in this order?
- 16:44And it might be little things, right?
- 16:46It might be like, right, okay, I'm not going to go out for dinners or I'm going to do one dinner out every fortnight or something.
- 16:53And then you might realize actually I really miss that and I enjoyed that.
- 16:58So it's like, okay, what can I swap out or cut back on that might not be as impacting in terms of my happiness.
- 17:06And so I can reintroduce that, I don't know, yeah.
- 17:10If anyone feels like they would like to share anything on this, and there's no pressure too, but we actually have the curve hotline, which is a chart you can leave like a voice note.
- 17:20Whether it's commenting, whether you're listening, whether it's sending a voice note, whatever.
- 17:25It's kind of nice sometimes to hear how other people think about this.
- 17:28So if you're listening and you're thinking, oh, that's really interesting because we in our family have prioritized this, and it's made me feel like that.
- 17:35I think talking about it can be really helpful.
- 17:37So if anyone does feel comfortable sharing, would love to hear, yeah, would love to hear how you think about what you prioritize.
- 17:44Because you're right that most people will feel like they don't have enough money to do all the things that they want to do.
- 17:49It's just the reality. Even when you have heaps, you feel like you don't have enough.
- 17:53Because it's just the idea of wanting more always.
- 17:56I'm reading a book at the moment called The Soul of Money.
- 18:01And the chapter like just finished reading is all about how people never feel like they have enough.
- 18:09You never have enough time. You never have enough money.
- 18:14Most people wake up and start their day with I haven't had enough sleep.
- 18:22And they have the whole day and their whole lives is structured around not having sufficient.
- 18:28And it's quite fascinating how even the rich don't think they have enough.
- 18:34And it's what is enough.
- 18:36And I think we've kind of touched on this conversation before around what is enough.
- 18:42And I just think, I think even if you had an extra thousand pounds a week, for example, you'd still be making trade-offs.
- 18:51I don't know, it's like we always think that we're not.
- 18:57I don't know, beautiful enough, smart enough, fit enough.
- 19:02All of this is just, and money is a big part of that as well.
- 19:06I'm never thinking that we don't have enough money.
- 19:10I think the whole, like, not enough time is massive.
- 19:14Shit, massive, massive, massive.
- 19:17Oh God, you always wake up saying I don't have enough sleep.
- 19:21Oh, same. Oh my God. Right, wait, start the day.
- 19:23So I was, so obviously I, well, not obviously I don't even said this.
- 19:27My sister's in Turkey, which is the reason why I've made this trip.
- 19:30She already had her accommodation booked.
- 19:32And since we were a kid, I've always been like the family member that normal is to share a bed with.
- 19:38Because I sleep talk and I care.
- 19:41And I'm just like just a pain in the ass anyway.
- 19:44We woke up this morning and Lucy was like,
- 19:46that was probably the best sleep I've ever had in a bed with you.
- 19:49And I was like, yeah, I purposefully bought sleeping pills.
- 19:52I was not at the nightmare.
- 19:54I don't like a tiny bit of sleeping pool,
- 19:56because I was like, I don't want to wake up and be like,
- 19:58fuck you, you ruined my holiday.
- 20:00Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 20:03And especially on holiday, that's like the one thing you want to feel rested.
- 20:07Recoop, yeah, is your sleep.
- 20:11Yeah, definitely.
- 20:13But should we talk about some finance stuff?
- 20:16Yeah, I mean, to be fair, this whole conversation has been exciting.
- 20:20But just like very self-indulgent.
- 20:22I think we'll have to probably put some time codes in this podcast
- 20:26so that people can skip through our bullshit if they're not interested.
- 20:30Yes.
- 20:31But yes, I'd love to know what's been going on in the world.
- 20:35In business, economy, stock market, money, what's been happening?
- 20:40Well, we've had a bit of a birthday last week.
- 20:43We had a 30th birthday, and it was Amazon's 30th birthday.
- 20:49So one of the largest companies in the world had a 30th birthday,
- 20:54which I don't know.
- 20:56I thought back.
- 20:57I was like, okay, so I would have been six years old when Amazon was first created,
- 21:03which is quite wild.
- 21:05And you would have been three.
- 21:08Tiny, tiny.
- 21:10I've lost it.
- 21:11Oh, sorry, no, I am here.
- 21:13I just realized there was a towel in the background.
- 21:16Oh, no.
- 21:17Oh, no.
- 21:18It's like not that shake.
- 21:20Yeah, so I think it was just quite fascinating to think
- 21:23how far that businesses come.
- 21:25So from 1995, it went out only sold books.
- 21:32You're right.
- 21:33You sound like you're underwater.
- 21:34Oh, God.
- 21:35No, it should be fine.
- 21:36It should be fine.
- 21:37I mean, it's going through the scholar.
- 21:40What's that?
- 21:41Oh, God.
- 21:43What's what?
- 21:44Oh, that's fine.
- 21:46It's just gone somewhere in Turkey.
- 21:48Oh, no.
- 21:49Oh, no.
- 21:50Does it sound true?
- 21:51No, just before.
- 21:52It was like the...
- 21:53Did you put the towel on it or something?
- 21:55No.
- 21:56I put my microphone down for a second.
- 21:58Oh, sorry, sorry, sorry.
- 21:59No, that's right.
- 22:00I wasn't training.
- 22:01I wasn't training.
- 22:02I was just going to say on my, you know, very long bus ride
- 22:10from the airport to where I'm staying here.
- 22:13I was like, I can get a taxi or I can wait on the bus
- 22:17for three hours for it to be full before it leaves.
- 22:20And then a two and a half, you know, it was a whole thing.
- 22:22I saved, like, I don't know, 40 pounds or something.
- 22:25But I listened to a podcast in that time.
- 22:28And it was one of Grace Beverly's podcasts.
- 22:30And it was with Emma Greed, who you were obsessed with.
- 22:33And one of the things that she said was that, like,
- 22:36a lot of us think about successful companies
- 22:38were building businesses and we think, you know,
- 22:41three years, five years.
- 22:43And she was like, there are, like, some of the best companies
- 22:45in the world are old.
- 22:47She was like, Apple is old, Amazon is old.
- 22:51And she started talking about it.
- 22:52And I thought about this, just the idea
- 22:55that she's right, so many of these companies
- 22:58have evolved and been here throughout so many moments
- 23:02in the last, you know, they've gone through decades
- 23:04and decades of change.
- 23:06And I think just realizing that is like, I don't know,
- 23:09it gave me this for anyway.
- 23:11They start out as one thing.
- 23:13And they end up morphing into like, like, in 1995,
- 23:16when Amazon started, it was like Earth's biggest bookstore.
- 23:20And now it's the everything store.
- 23:22Like, it sells hundreds of millions of products,
- 23:24not just books, like, to think that it started selling books.
- 23:28And then it introduced the Kindle,
- 23:30which effectively cannibalized its book business.
- 23:34But like, I don't know, it's just constantly adapting.
- 23:36Wait, did they make Kindle?
- 23:39The Kindle.
- 23:40Yes.
- 23:41No way.
- 23:42And everyone was like, don't do it.
- 23:44Whoa, they made it.
- 23:46That's like the blockbuster story about, you know,
- 23:49it's like cannibalizing your main product with a new one.
- 23:52That's a bit of a make sense, because if you don't do it,
- 23:54someone else is going to, right?
- 23:56Like, codec.
- 23:57Codec camera is invented the digital camera,
- 23:59but didn't release it.
- 24:00And then someone else did and completely cannibalized their business.
- 24:04Like, what idiots, why would you not put that out?
- 24:06That's so strange.
- 24:08But yeah, so Amazon is 30.
- 24:11It's now got, it's gone from like half a million revenue
- 24:14to $500 billion in revenue, which I just say, well, well, well.
- 24:20It employs 1.5 million people.
- 24:23And I was thinking, what companies, back then,
- 24:26were the top companies in the S&P 500?
- 24:30Oh my god.
- 24:31Now we've got Microsoft, we've got Amazon Apple, Google,
- 24:35Meta, Nvidia, you know, like, we've got a lot of tech companies.
- 24:40And so I was like, when Amazon was first starting out,
- 24:44was it groceries?
- 24:46Like, I mean, sorry, was it soup markets?
- 24:48No, it's Exxon mobile.
- 24:51So oil, an oil company, petrol company,
- 24:54General Electric GE, which is like,
- 24:57kind of a conglomerate finance company,
- 25:00Coca-Cola, actually.
- 25:02Oh, yeah.
- 25:03McDonald's?
- 25:05No.
- 25:06I mean, it's up there.
- 25:07Like, I'm just these are just rattling off some,
- 25:09like, AT&T, which is a telecommunications company,
- 25:12IBM.
- 25:13And then the last one is Philip Morris,
- 25:15the tobacco company.
- 25:17Oh, whoa.
- 25:19So like, if you think like, all those companies are so old-world,
- 25:22or like, so boring.
- 25:24And they're also like...
- 25:26Like, most of us...
- 25:28As we said, they're all kind of irrelevant now, aren't they?
- 25:30Yeah.
- 25:31Like, yeah.
- 25:32And most of them, like, if we think most of us here
- 25:36will have maybe 30 years until we retire,
- 25:41or, you know, at least...
- 25:44I don't know, close to that.
- 25:4520 maybe?
- 25:46I mean, gosh, mine's creeping up.
- 25:47But anyway.
- 25:48So to think that...
- 25:49Oh, God's sake.
- 25:50Absolutely not.
- 25:51There'll be so many people listening who have had, like,
- 25:55five kids that have grown up and gone through university
- 25:57that are like...
- 25:58Shut up.
- 25:59Shut up, I know.
- 26:01But to think that there could be companies
- 26:04that aren't even around right now that could be driving
- 26:08my investment returns for the next 30 years.
- 26:10But even if you think about that, like, at the time 30 years ago,
- 26:13Apple was around, but it certainly was not up there.
- 26:16It was way down the list in terms of...
- 26:19You know, so it's like remembering there's...
- 26:21There's the apples right now, the equivalent of the apples,
- 26:24probably either not even listed or really low down in there
- 26:27some P500 that could creep up and end up being, you know,
- 26:30the biggest companies in the world.
- 26:32Yeah.
- 26:33And also, they...
- 26:35Like, the...
- 26:36I'm going to keep it there.
- 26:38Just lost my chain of thought.
- 26:40That's good.
- 26:41Still don't think that this is...
- 26:43Yeah.
- 26:44Oh, yes.
- 26:47The thing is, holding on to those companies for 30 years,
- 26:50I think that's the hardest part, right?
- 26:52Because we even saw a few months ago, like,
- 26:55a little blip in the stock market and people are like,
- 26:58oh my gosh, what do I do?
- 26:59Do I sell?
- 27:00And so, like, going through a massive global financial crisis
- 27:05is pandemic.
- 27:06Holding on to these companies for 30 years,
- 27:09that, to me, is the hard part.
- 27:11Yeah.
- 27:12Oh, I mean, we just put...
- 27:13We put out it.
- 27:14This is obviously not going up for a few days, but...
- 27:16But I literally just posted that video.
- 27:19We did that stupid, like, is it illegal song?
- 27:21You know, like...
- 27:22Hi, my name is Pankin.
- 27:23It was really nice to meet you.
- 27:25Anyways, it took us about 20 takes.
- 27:27Oh my god, wait, many times.
- 27:29I'm not saying glad we persevered, I think.
- 27:31I've actually got on...
- 27:32It's better than the first one.
- 27:33I've actually got on TikTok, so...
- 27:35I saw.
- 27:36I saw it.
- 27:38I saw it.
- 27:40I saw it, and I thought, shit, yes, Vic,
- 27:43you're best blogger, self.
- 27:44I'm so here for it.
- 27:45What did one did you see?
- 27:47The day in the life when you went to...
- 27:49Oh, I know.
- 27:50I also have my voice sound so annoying.
- 27:52I'm sorry.
- 27:53People that have to listen to my voice all the time.
- 27:55Trust me, it's not that annoying.
- 27:56So many people are more annoying.
- 27:59But I...
- 28:00Yeah.
- 28:01What was my point?
- 28:02Oh, in that video, I made the like...
- 28:04Captions, basically.
- 28:06Like, you being like,
- 28:07Hi, I'm a girl that's invested since I was nine.
- 28:09And then I was like, Hi, I'm a girl.
- 28:10I'm invested since I was 30.
- 28:12Yeah.
- 28:13Just learned about stocks or whatever.
- 28:14And then when it went back to you,
- 28:16it was like the girl that holds her investments
- 28:17for at least five years,
- 28:18because she's a long term investor.
- 28:20And then it went back to me,
- 28:21and it was like, trying to be a finance broker
- 28:23and sells like she thinks she can beat the market.
- 28:25Because it's true, I'm exactly that.
- 28:27Like, I get so excited and swept up
- 28:29in the idea of like...
- 28:31Buying selling at the right time.
- 28:33I just find it exciting and fun.
- 28:35But I know for long-term wealth,
- 28:37it's just so not the way to do it.
- 28:39Yeah.
- 28:40That's right.
- 28:41Still got some learning to do.
- 28:43But I've evolved a lot in the way that I invest.
- 28:46And I think that's good,
- 28:47because everyone,
- 28:48it's good to find the way you invest in her.
- 28:50But I think at the end of the day,
- 28:52the main thing here is there's so much data
- 28:56that says buy and hold is the way to do it.
- 28:59So for anyone that's worried or scared about investing
- 29:02or doesn't know if you can be good at it,
- 29:04it's very hard to effort up
- 29:05if all you're doing is buying,
- 29:06while it's doing nothing about it.
- 29:08And just like the more boring the better,
- 29:10the less you do,
- 29:12the more you set and forget almost the better.
- 29:15But also, I think,
- 29:17congratulations to you, Sov,
- 29:19because you're still part of a very small minority
- 29:24that isn't investing, you know?
- 29:26Even though you might, you know,
- 29:28we could always do better with our investments,
- 29:30whether it's amount, less trading, whatever.
- 29:32But you're investing.
- 29:34And I think that deserves a little round of applause.
- 29:37Because a lot of people aren't still.
- 29:40I must say, I wish I didn't from when I was nine,
- 29:42but you know,
- 29:44we can't all go back in time.
- 29:46And what do we say?
- 29:47We always think we want more of something.
- 29:49So just be proud of where we are.
- 29:51It's true.
- 29:52It's very true.
- 29:53There was a time in my life where I remember thinking,
- 29:55and I actually remember my friend,
- 29:57one of my really good friends,
- 29:59her dad used to be a,
- 30:01well sorry, yeah, used to be a primary school teacher,
- 30:03didn't earn much money,
- 30:05was investing though.
- 30:07He invested consistently,
- 30:09regularly, over like 30 years,
- 30:11and he was able to retire so much earlier than his friends,
- 30:13even though he was earning a teacher salary.
- 30:15And I remember him saying to us,
- 30:17like, read Rich Dad Poor Dad,
- 30:19and we got so excited.
- 30:21Like let's uninvest in club, let's invest,
- 30:23but then didn't know where to do it or how to do it,
- 30:25and you know, just kind of fell aside.
- 30:27But now I am.
- 30:29And now I get it.
- 30:31And I think you're right.
- 30:33There's lots of people that aren't even there yet,
- 30:35and you've got to be.
- 30:37You ought to take the small ones, you know?
- 30:39Exactly, exactly.
- 30:41In other news,
- 30:43Bitcoin is having a,
- 30:45like, time in the sun,
- 30:47holy hiker,
- 30:49it is,
- 30:51it reached $122,000,
- 30:55US dollars, a coin,
- 30:57last week,
- 30:59which is an all-time coin.
- 31:01I remember when 65,000 for a Bitcoin was like,
- 31:05the highest Zeverbane.
- 31:07Yeah, so it was in September,
- 31:09it was in the 50s,
- 31:11and now it's over 120.
- 31:15It's people are loving Bitcoin at the moment,
- 31:19and other cryptocurrencies,
- 31:21and it's all around
- 31:23this term that's,
- 31:25honestly, the US has deemed this week crypto-week,
- 31:29and it's because there's a lot of different acts
- 31:31and legislations that are going through,
- 31:33through the government right now
- 31:35in order to make it.
- 31:37I guess easier and more accessible
- 31:39for people to invest in crypto.
- 31:41So being, you know,
- 31:43very, very supportive policies,
- 31:45and so people are getting excited,
- 31:47they're thinking this is kind of game-changing for Bitcoin,
- 31:49and lots of other cryptocurrencies,
- 31:51and it kind of coincides with what Trump said, right?
- 31:53Like, he was like,
- 31:55very supportive of crypto,
- 31:57and yeah, it's...
- 31:59I mean, he's got his own coin,
- 32:01of course he's supportive of that.
- 32:03Yeah, very self-doubted.
- 32:05Have you got any money in crypto at the moment?
- 32:07No.
- 32:09You're not really a crypto girl, are you?
- 32:11I like the whole brand of stuff to be honest.
- 32:13I think we need to...
- 32:15Because every time I hear this,
- 32:17I'm like,
- 32:19damn it!
- 32:21And I think actually what we need to do is
- 32:23as soon as there's time for we haven't heard crypto
- 32:25or something for a while,
- 32:27that is when we go invest.
- 32:29Not when it starts making its way into the news.
- 32:31So like, if you're hearing this and you're thinking,
- 32:33I'm going to go invest in crypto.
- 32:35I mean, fine,
- 32:37but I, you know, investing when it's having a total boom
- 32:39is it?
- 32:41Well, that philosophy
- 32:43is good for absolutely everything.
- 32:45You know, if nobody's talking about Nvidia
- 32:47or if nobody's talking about
- 32:49the stock market
- 32:51or it's exactly that saying,
- 32:55oh my god, what is it when there's blood on...
- 32:57Invest when there's blood on the streets.
- 32:59Oh, no, it's like being greedy when...
- 33:01Oh, being greedy when others are fearful
- 33:03and being fearful when others are greedy.
- 33:05I also remember ages ago used to use the saying,
- 33:07you know, as soon as your taxi driver's talking about it,
- 33:11like you should have already sold it.
- 33:13And the idea behind that is not that taxi drivers
- 33:15don't know what they're talking about.
- 33:17It's the idea that if everybody has heard about it,
- 33:19there's no one left to buy it
- 33:21to push up the demand
- 33:23for what it is that you've got.
- 33:25Therefore, it's probably at the top.
- 33:27And if it's only got one way to go,
- 33:29that's probably down.
- 33:31And it's like so true, right?
- 33:33We haven't really heard
- 33:35a whisper out of crypto world or bitcoin.
- 33:39For ages.
- 33:41And that's when we should have been buying.
- 33:43And now everyone's getting excited
- 33:45and we're talking about it.
- 33:47Yeah. Maybe we should do like a...
- 33:49I don't know what you call it,
- 33:51an opposites podcast.
- 33:53I actually think that's a good idea.
- 33:55It should almost be like what's not being talked about right now.
- 33:57Yeah, and maybe that's the headlines.
- 33:59But what's not being talked about?
- 34:01Maybe it's like reading between the headlines or something.
- 34:03What are we seeing?
- 34:05And then what does that mean for how we should be investing?
- 34:07Because yeah, as you say,
- 34:11like if gold's in the headlines,
- 34:13then that's probably not reading between the headlines.
- 34:15It's like what else is there?
- 34:17That we haven't spoken about.
- 34:19Which is probably where you should be putting some more attention
- 34:21and potentially money.
- 34:23Buying at the bottom of the curve.
- 34:25Yeah.
- 34:27Yeah, love it.
- 34:29So, what does that mean then?
- 34:31In terms of crypto, like...
- 34:33Has the legislation been put through?
- 34:35Was it just whispers of something that's going to be coming?
- 34:39It's being put through this week,
- 34:41so TBC.
- 34:43But I think...
- 34:45I think this is the start of...
- 34:47If it goes through in the US,
- 34:49that also opens the doors for lots of other countries
- 34:51to put through a similar legislation.
- 34:53I also think
- 34:55it just is a massive metaphorical tick of approval
- 34:59for the legitimacy of it.
- 35:03Yeah.
- 35:05And it becoming an actual,
- 35:07invisible asset.
- 35:09Because it sits outside.
- 35:11It's not a share in a company.
- 35:13It does kind of sit outside the regulations.
- 35:15And I think that's also the beauty of it, right?
- 35:17But I think there is a lot of companies
- 35:19and a lot of places that are like,
- 35:21you know what, we won't invest in crypto.
- 35:23It's too speculative.
- 35:25It's too risky.
- 35:27Also keeping it like,
- 35:29unregulated and flexible, if that makes sense.
- 35:31So yeah, I think it's a big tick of approval.
- 35:35And I think there could be...
- 35:37It's going to open the doors for a lot of funds and money
- 35:41that previously, perhaps,
- 35:43weren't allowed to invest in crypto.
- 35:45To invest in crypto.
- 35:47And we saw this...
- 35:49Remember when the first Bitcoin ETF was created?
- 35:51And this opened up the doors for people who, you know,
- 35:55tried to buy the direct cryptocurrency
- 35:59off a crypto trading platform,
- 36:01like Coinbase or something like that.
- 36:03Whereas, with a Bitcoin ETF,
- 36:05you can buy that now through
- 36:07Shareses or through trading two and two
- 36:09or any trading platform.
- 36:11So it just opens up the world of
- 36:13Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies
- 36:15to people that previously
- 36:17had these barriers or weren't interested
- 36:19or it was too hard basket.
- 36:21And so...
- 36:23What are the regulations that have been put in?
- 36:25What are the new things?
- 36:27I knew you'd ask me that.
- 36:29And I purposely took it out because I was like,
- 36:31that is boring.
- 36:33Is it boring?
- 36:35Yeah.
- 36:37Can you just give me a bullet point?
- 36:39Like, is it essentially making it...
- 36:41It's about classifications.
- 36:43Right now, it is deemed a commodity,
- 36:47not a security,
- 36:49which means it comes under different laws.
- 36:51If you flip that, then you have more accessibility.
- 36:53Like, there's so many
- 36:55legalities behind
- 36:57investments,
- 36:59particularly in the US.
- 37:01And Trump's whole policy was to make it...
- 37:03What does that make US
- 37:05crypto capital of the world?
- 37:07He's basically trying to make it more accessible.
- 37:09That's the bottom line.
- 37:11It's easy to buy this year.
- 37:13You know, right now,
- 37:15it's still quite difficult.
- 37:17What about payments, right?
- 37:19You also lead to it being a lot more accessible
- 37:21in terms of paying for things like coffee and...
- 37:23Yeah.
- 37:25Speaking of coffee,
- 37:27it was a good segue.
- 37:29Nice, but she's good.
- 37:31She's the little valor.
- 37:33Oh, should I just keep going?
- 37:35Not ask for a compliment.
- 37:37Yeah.
- 37:39The price of coffee.
- 37:41You know, we're talking about how expensive things are.
- 37:43Like, the price of coffee,
- 37:45if you're feeling...
- 37:47Like, what is your standard coffee
- 37:49and how much would you pay?
- 37:51It's about £390,
- 37:53which is...
- 37:55Oh, do you get 80s or something?
- 37:57No, no, just like an O latte.
- 37:59Oh, yeah.
- 38:01So, it's not cheap.
- 38:03Yeah.
- 38:05I mean, I honestly have really been trying to
- 38:07pull back on buying coffee.
- 38:09I have been trying to switch a little bit more to
- 38:11kick out, which is like a
- 38:13non-caffeinated drink that I've
- 38:15always loved. It's kind of more in the
- 38:17community and I...
- 38:19The amount that I pay to, like,
- 38:21basically import, like, kick out
- 38:23is the same price as what I would pay for a coffee
- 38:25if I go out.
- 38:27So, I'm like, I can't be doing that
- 38:29and be buying coffee.
- 38:31Sometimes I do.
- 38:33And, like, this morning I've had about
- 38:35three espresso's, but it was because
- 38:37that was included in my stay here in Turkey
- 38:39and our buffet breakfast.
- 38:41But it's like, you know, £4 or £8
- 38:43It's expensive, yeah.
- 38:45I mean, I'm really...
- 38:47I do not buy into the idea of
- 38:49your coffee is making you're breaking the bank
- 38:51and, again, you know, kind of back to what we were talking about
- 38:53at the start. It's like, if your morning coffee
- 38:55brings you so much joy,
- 38:57then that should be prioritised
- 38:59over other things, you know?
- 39:01I'm exactly that.
- 39:03I'm like, I...
- 39:05I used to be every time I buy coffee out.
- 39:07I'm like, Vic, why don't you make it at home?
- 39:09And I was like, the joy I get
- 39:11from my morning walk,
- 39:13getting my coffee and starting my day like that.
- 39:15Or even the break, you know,
- 39:17mid-morning and going out and getting a coffee
- 39:19with the team or whatever,
- 39:21that, to me,
- 39:23has so much more value
- 39:25than that extra three, four pounds
- 39:27in my bank account.
- 39:29And I've added up
- 39:31and I'd save maybe a couple of
- 39:33a couple of thousand pounds, like not even that,
- 39:35over the year.
- 39:37And I was like, you know what?
- 39:39Get that money elsewhere
- 39:41than from my morning coffee,
- 39:43if that makes sense, to make up that.
- 39:45So anyway, you look for other things
- 39:47to take out of the budget,
- 39:49rather than...
- 39:51Where is my parents?
- 39:53Cannot understand why.
- 39:55I reckon our parents' generation
- 39:57and my grandma, like she absolutely
- 39:59cannot understand
- 40:01why people spend money on coffee.
- 40:03It's just unfathomable to her.
- 40:05Like, I remember I turned up to my parents' house.
- 40:07I didn't get it until I got bought the coffees.
- 40:09And I turned up.
- 40:11And honestly, it was like
- 40:13I had crashed the car or something.
- 40:15Like, she was like, why did you buy me one?
- 40:17I've just had...
- 40:19And I was like, wow.
- 40:21My life...
- 40:23Here I was doing a nice teacher.
- 40:25And I was like, also my...
- 40:27It's not that big a deal if you don't want it.
- 40:29I got the joy in buying it
- 40:31and also dad will have it if you don't...
- 40:33You know, it was quite funny how...
- 40:35I mean, like, yeah, exactly.
- 40:37But also, that's...
- 40:39I reckon that's a generational thing.
- 40:41Because the idea of having a coffee machine at home...
- 40:43And then they had like three of them a day.
- 40:45I don't know.
- 40:47It's also buying flowers.
- 40:49My parents are really anti-bying flowers.
- 40:51So it was your sister.
- 40:53I remember when we did a question box
- 40:55and it was like,
- 40:57things you don't value or something.
- 40:59And she commented saying flowers.
- 41:01And I was like, well, that's pretty funny.
- 41:03Because that's exactly how your sister...
- 41:05Like, shows love is buying flowers for people.
- 41:07I love buying flowers for people.
- 41:09I would also love to know the male equivalent.
- 41:11Because I really struggle...
- 41:13What to buy mean.
- 41:15I think buying them flowers is really lovely.
- 41:19I think that that should be not so feminine.
- 41:21Yeah.
- 41:23Maybe ask flower man.
- 41:25Yeah, I mean.
- 41:27It's literally his name.
- 41:29It's literally his name.
- 41:31But you should ask him.
- 41:33If I bought you flowers, would you think it was cute or a waste of money?
- 41:35I did buy them flowers the other day, actually.
- 41:37What did he think?
- 41:39And they got delivered to his hotel because there's a way.
- 41:41Oh, that's really cute back.
- 41:43And I was like,
- 41:45he didn't text me.
- 41:47Like, you know when someone gets their flowers,
- 41:49I was like, oh my god, thank you so much.
- 41:51And so I texted him.
- 41:53I was like, hey, how are you?
- 41:55Is that good?
- 41:57It's like with your fishing rod out.
- 41:59And everything arrived for you.
- 42:01And then I was like, yeah, anyway.
- 42:03And he was like, oh, sorry, I didn't even notice them.
- 42:05I was like, okay, cool, awesome.
- 42:07Last time I bought you flowers.
- 42:09Oh, what? He didn't notice them?
- 42:11What the hell?
- 42:13Have they just been sitting in his hotel room when he got there or something?
- 42:15Yeah, and so I spoiled the surprise.
- 42:17But I was like, well, yeah, anyway.
- 42:19Yeah, I'm a nice person.
- 42:21You're such a nice person.
- 42:23But yes, coffee, the price of coffee has gone up.
- 42:27There are a lot of things.
- 42:29There is a lot of droughts.
- 42:31And obviously like climate change impact in crops.
- 42:35So that means less supply of coffee beans, higher prices.
- 42:39But also, Trump is slapping a 50% tariff on Brazil.
- 42:43And Brazil controls 30% of the global coffee beans.
- 42:49So we're going to expect that to go up even more.
- 42:53Yeah, which is awesome.
- 42:55Maybe following soda from our parents.
- 42:57Yes.
- 42:58Or maybe you could say the side hustle of importing cacao for everyone.
- 43:01And we can all converse.
- 43:03Oh, I mean, like, honestly, anyone interested in cacao let me know.
- 43:07But I was awesome.
- 43:09I really actually think it needs a rebranded.
- 43:11Everyone goes for matcha, which look, sometimes can be yum.
- 43:15Kind of tastes like dirt.
- 43:17This is basically like a hot chocolate.
- 43:19And you put cinnamon and maybe a bit of honey and nutmeg in it.
- 43:21And it's so yum.
- 43:23And you don't get the coffee crash.
- 43:25And you feel like quite creative and loving.
- 43:28Every time I have a cacao, I'm a nicer person.
- 43:31No shit.
- 43:32Every time I have a coffee, I'm more chaotic.
- 43:35Have you heard of this new matcha?
- 43:39Well, it's like a new Japanese tea.
- 43:43And it's supposed to be the next big thing.
- 43:47No.
- 43:48It is.
- 43:49So it's like matcha, but it tastes like coffee.
- 43:52Oh, so weird.
- 43:54I can't find the name of it.
- 43:55But dammit.
- 43:56But yes, it's a new thing.
- 43:59So with these tariffs with the coffee.
- 44:02Yes.
- 44:03So what's happening?
- 44:05So the prices are going to go up even more is what I'm saying.
- 44:09They've gone up a bit.
- 44:11They're going to go up even more because we've got more tariffs coming.
- 44:15But to put that in perspective, the price of coffee,
- 44:19yes, recently it's gone up.
- 44:21But over the years, it's actually been,
- 44:25it has gone up as much as a lot of other things in our lives.
- 44:29If we wound back like 45 years, the price, I guess,
- 44:35per pound of coffee beans is $3.21.
- 44:40And that would actually be closer to about 13 pounds today if you adjusted for inflation.
- 44:47And it's about eight pounds.
- 44:50So like, it should be way more if we, if it had kept pace with inflation.
- 44:54So it's actually been relatively, I guess, controlled in terms of its price growth.
- 45:00It's just the last we while just increased, increased supply, more producers,
- 45:07all of that.
- 45:09Oh, that makes sense.
- 45:11Because I guess, look, there's nothing secret about the fact that people spend money on coffee, right?
- 45:15So I guess the idea that as soon as it started doing well, more popped up.
- 45:19And the more of something is being produced, sorry, I'm not explaining this well,
- 45:23but if something's being produced a lot by lots of different people,
- 45:25you can be price competitive.
- 45:27So do you think it's the fact that that's happened at the same time as prices increasing
- 45:31means that it's kept at that bay from a price perspective?
- 45:35Because there's so many different options in competitors and brands.
- 45:38Whereas now that's unwinding, right?
- 45:40There's a lot of suppliers that have been, their crops have been decimated
- 45:44because of climate change.
- 45:46And then we've also got this tariffs are now making it more expensive.
- 45:50Sorry.
- 45:51What's wrong?
- 45:53So it's just having a scratch.
- 45:56I can't hear her actually.
- 45:59Oh, okay, sorry.
- 46:02So yeah, price of coffee, but also coffee, you can invest in coffee.
- 46:06So coffee is a commodity.
- 46:08So just like gold, silver, milk, wheat, cotton, you know, you can invest in coffee.
- 46:15So a way to I guess kind of like hedge yourself is, you know,
- 46:21if you're paying more for coffee each day, maybe invest in like a coffee ETF or, you know,
- 46:29coffee, yeah, a coffee kind of commodity or something.
- 46:34But don't you think if there's all these tariffs going into place,
- 46:38and then it's going to get more expensive?
- 46:41Doesn't that mean it's not a particularly great time to be thinking about investing in coffee?
- 46:46Wouldn't you want to invest if it's like, you know, got a clear road ahead for growth
- 46:51and isn't being stifled by taxes and tariffs?
- 46:55I guess, I guess a commodity is a bit different.
- 46:58It's a bit more trading, right?
- 47:00Like gold, for example, gold doing super well at the moment because the world's not
- 47:04or seemingly, you know, a bit uncertain.
- 47:07And then there'll be a time when gold will not do so well when the world is doing really well.
- 47:12So commodities are a lot more cyclical.
- 47:14So yes, there's times when you kind of get in and get out.
- 47:17It's a bit of a different, I guess, trading approach to investing in shares.
- 47:22But with coffee, like we were just saying, you know, what would be your tipping point
- 47:28where you would stop buying coffee altogether?
- 47:31I honestly don't like beer.
- 47:33I don't think that people, I think because it adjusts so slowly in terms of how it increases.
- 47:40I think everyone that loves coffee enough to right now be spending four pounds or eight dollars
- 47:45or whatever on it is probably there's probably not a price cap
- 47:50because it's an emotional purchase.
- 47:52I think, well, I don't know, I could be wrong.
- 47:55There must be a tipping point, right?
- 47:57But whether it's, you know, another 20% or another 50%.
- 48:01Like there's a lot of price elasticity, which means,
- 48:06well, in the necessity, God, I'm really trying to bring in my economics,
- 48:10which means, you know, you could increase the price of something
- 48:13and the demand doesn't fall away.
- 48:16So I quite like that price elasticity.
- 48:20Yeah, so it means, in economics, it means like if the price of, I don't know,
- 48:25broccoli goes up, then you might switch to courgettes, you know,
- 48:29because broccoli is very little price elasticity.
- 48:33Whereas, so inelastic pricing is like, say that you needed a new heart for whatever reason
- 48:39and that doubled from 1,000 to 2,000.
- 48:42You're still going to get the new heart transplant because you need it.
- 48:46It's layered, yeah.
- 48:48I mean, I think a new heart versus a cup of coffee,
- 48:53probably need one more than the other, but yes.
- 48:57I also wanted to touch on, before we wrap up, this thing called the taco trade.
- 49:03Yeah.
- 49:04Some people may have heard of this, some may not, but it's not about,
- 49:08it's nothing to do with Mexico and it's not to do with guacamole and anything like that.
- 49:14It is, it stands for, so the taco trade stands for Trump always chickens out.
- 49:22And I love it.
- 49:25I also love that there's a Mexican kind of connotation into the fact that he knows.
- 49:32Anyway, it is the fact that, and we've seen this unfold,
- 49:36it comes out with these bagel, dashes, kind of threats,
- 49:39particularly around tariffs, and then wind some back and chickens out.
- 49:43And so people are starting to trade on this stuff.
- 49:47He's come out again, more recently with some more tariffs.
- 49:50And people are like, you know what?
- 49:53We kind of don't believe you.
- 49:56It's like, you always chicken out.
- 49:59And so, yeah, if you'd bought,
- 50:02like if you, when he announced those tariffs back in April and you'd bought shares
- 50:06because of a taco trade because you're like, you know what?
- 50:08He always chickens out.
- 50:09I'm going to take advantage of his opportunity of prices being lower.
- 50:13You would have done very well.
- 50:14So it's all around that and the fact that, you know what?
- 50:18Trump always chickens out.
- 50:20Do you know the thing that worries me about this is that as soon as it gets back to Trump,
- 50:25he's going to has tiny little penis that's going to shrivel up and he's not going to feel very masculine.
- 50:29And he's going to do something stupid and irrational.
- 50:32And that's the thing that worries me because I think it's fine to think our taco trade.
- 50:38But as soon as that becomes public and it hits his ego, that's where I'm like, oh God.
- 50:44Yeah.
- 50:45And there's also, there's also the, I guess the stock market element.
- 50:50And there's the actual impact, right?
- 50:52Like if he puts in tariffs, that's like, yeah, you actually don't remember that.
- 51:02Well, we can't wait to that one out.
- 51:05I was like, I was going to go down a rabbit hole and I was like, you know what?
- 51:09That actually happens a lot.
- 51:11That is one of the things that we added to it is like we start talking about something
- 51:14and then it starts talking about something really complicated.
- 51:17And I'm like, nah.
- 51:18And now she started self centering.
- 51:21Sorry, it's like a bigger conversation.
- 51:23So I'm like, okay, maybe I'll say that for another time.
- 51:26Yeah.
- 51:27Because we don't want to happen last week and we start on a big conversation in the last two minutes.
- 51:33Yeah, good idea.
- 51:34Yeah.
- 51:35So, yeah.
- 51:36The one thing I do want to ask you about, because I did see this in your notes, was the La Boo Boo Bubble.
- 51:40La Boo Boo.
- 51:41Is it popping?
- 51:42Has it popped?
- 51:43What's the deal with that?
- 51:45So a pop-up who owns La Boo Boo has just released that, well, sorry, it is expecting a 350% growth
- 51:56in profit the first half of this.
- 51:59No way.
- 52:01All based on this La Boo Boo.
- 52:03So, yeah, it was just a little anecdote in there going, wow, that is huge off one toy.
- 52:11Yeah.
- 52:12Yeah.
- 52:13Sorry.
- 52:14Is it public?
- 52:15I can't remember.
- 52:16Yeah.
- 52:17Yeah, pop-up.
- 52:18So you could have invested in pop-up.
- 52:19Yes.
- 52:20Yeah.
- 52:21I'd love to know if anyone has invested in pop-up.
- 52:24Yes.
- 52:25And if you are, join the investing club's dad.
- 52:27Please, give us.
- 52:28Give us your ideas.
- 52:29Yeah.
- 52:30We need your review signs.
- 52:31Yeah.
- 52:32Actually, Vic, that could be a really, it could be a nice chance for you to talk about those,
- 52:37the stocks that have done really, really well, because I saw something you wrote the other day.
- 52:42I can't remember where I saw it.
- 52:44And you wrote down like five or six investment ideas that you've talked about in the club,
- 52:49and how they've gone, and I thought, holy shit, that's amazing.
- 52:52I actually think I've got it here.
- 52:54Because I actually don't think we've given this enough attention.
- 52:58No.
- 52:59Like, here we go.
- 53:00Do a lingo up 100%.
- 53:03Micro strategy, 180%.
- 53:06Planet here, a 420.
- 53:11Rocket lab, whatever.
- 53:13Planet six.
- 53:14Six.
- 53:15That one.
- 53:16I'm quite tired.
- 53:18The Rocket lab one, up nearly 700%.
- 53:21Like, are you joking?
- 53:22That's insane.
- 53:23Like, imagine if we're all invested in that when you first spoke about it in the club.
- 53:27It's such amazing returns.
- 53:30Thank you.
- 53:31And that's obviously, I mean, no, that's amazing back.
- 53:34But also, that is credit to other people in the community as well,
- 53:40feeding those ideas in, because it's like, I'm only one person out there seeing the world how I see it.
- 53:46And there's nearly a thousand people in there also seeing the world in a different way and bringing those ideas.
- 53:52Like Ila Boo Boo to the table for the rest of the club to be an effort.
- 53:58It's a collective effort.
- 54:00It really is.
- 54:01Yeah, very cool.
- 54:02If anyone that wants to join the club will put the link in the podcast show notes.
- 54:07And was there any other research or fun things that you wanted to touch on before we finish?
- 54:13You did a lot of research for the episode and I am not sure if we covered it all.
- 54:17I bought a new Kylie lip gloss.
- 54:21Oh my god, what?
- 54:22Let's see it.
- 54:23Has this got anything to do with the best thing?
- 54:25Has it done well?
- 54:26No.
- 54:27No.
- 54:28Is she's not a public?
- 54:29Is she her company?
- 54:30I wonder what that would sell for if it sold like Rose, Hayley Bieber's brand.
- 54:34Oh, it would be worth billions.
- 54:36It did get me thinking.
- 54:38If you have a following, like, gosh, it's such a...
- 54:42No, okay.
- 54:43So this is really interesting.
- 54:45I know that episode I referenced earlier on this podcast with Grace Beverly and Emigrade.
- 54:50Yes.
- 54:51This is one of the things that they spoke about in this episode where Emma said,
- 54:55I don't believe in influencer brands.
- 54:58I think that it comes down to how good your product is.
- 55:00She said, there's 40 million online creators that have over a million followers.
- 55:0640 million.
- 55:07She was like, that's a lot of people with a lot of influence.
- 55:10And just because you have a huge following doesn't mean you can sell a product.
- 55:13And the idea that you can sell it once, fine.
- 55:15But repeat customers, it comes down to having a good product.
- 55:19No, I agree with that.
- 55:21And I thought that's quite interesting because we do often just say like,
- 55:24oh, there are influencers, there are celebrity.
- 55:26Therefore, they can sell anything or make a business out of anything.
- 55:29They probably can once, but you're not going to have a profitable long term business.
- 55:32If you have someone buy something, it's totally shit and they don't buy again.
- 55:36No.
- 55:37I guess what I'm meaning is that someone with zero followers...
- 55:42Versus someone with a couple of million.
- 55:45Like that's like a storefront, right?
- 55:47You've instantly got a few million people coming into your store
- 55:50that you can, that have eyeballs that can view your products.
- 55:54It's like a lot of ingrams.
- 55:56You've got a massive head start, I think is what I'm saying.
- 55:59But you're right to continue that and to be profitable and sustainable year after year.
- 56:05You have to have those repeat sales.
- 56:07So yes, the product has to be good.
- 56:10But to have that following as well is pretty helpful.
- 56:15Well, if you could continue with your tech talk career,
- 56:18at least really great.
- 56:19I've got four and a half thousand views.
- 56:22And I've got...
- 56:24I've got 21 followers.
- 56:26That's great.
- 56:28That's kind of very...
- 56:30Wow.
- 56:32I'm very impressed.
- 56:35Yeah.
- 56:36Also, can I just...
- 56:37I mean, I know this is...
- 56:38I don't know if it's going to sound desperate or not.
- 56:40But actually, for anyone that is listening to this
- 56:43and enjoys our brand, like our podcast,
- 56:46literally the best thing that you could ever do to help us
- 56:51and to help us grow and to help the brand, you know,
- 56:54be able to afford more people to help
- 56:56and like work on this content
- 56:58and actually build the curbs by doing things like sharing the podcast,
- 57:02sharing social posts to friends.
- 57:05Like, it is so helpful.
- 57:07And I know in a world where you're oversaturated with content,
- 57:09it can get really exhausting and you just feel like fed up.
- 57:12But if you like what we do, that is honestly,
- 57:16like the most helpful thing for us to grow.
- 57:19Like follow the show, rate it, share it with a friend,
- 57:22forward posts to people.
- 57:24Like, it's actually really hard, I think,
- 57:26in today's environment to get any kind of cut through and content.
- 57:29There's just such an oversaturation.
- 57:32I think one of us needs to go to a cold play concert
- 57:35and have an affair.
- 57:37Oh, my God.
- 57:40I've been loving it.
- 57:42So funny. I literally was this morning.
- 57:45My sister was like laughing on the toilet.
- 57:47And I was like, what are you laughing at?
- 57:49And she came out and she was like, she showed me this meme.
- 57:51And it was like, you know how I'm like done?
- 57:53There's like the open to work.
- 57:55Someone had put open to work over both of their faces
- 57:58because obviously they've lost their jobs.
- 58:00Honestly.
- 58:02So for Ian on the mystery, I mean, you probably haven't,
- 58:04by the time this podcast comes out.
- 58:06You have to be living under a rock.
- 58:08Yeah, it's honestly so funny, basically,
- 58:10at the cold play concert, like the CEO in the top of HR
- 58:13or something of this massive company.
- 58:15You know how at football games they have the camera,
- 58:18like pan to random people, they're like cuddling,
- 58:20and one of them just kind of like drops backwards.
- 58:23If they had just stood there,
- 58:25and like, it wouldn't have gone viral,
- 58:27it would never expect the virality that it has had.
- 58:31Like the commy section.
- 58:33What is the commy section I haven't read yet?
- 58:35It's so good.
- 58:36It's like conscious, and Chris Martin consciously
- 58:38and couples a couple like it's.
- 58:40And then what was it?
- 58:41When you try your best, but you don't succeed.
- 58:44And then it's like, oh, I think that's it's so good.
- 58:48What's the general, like is it saying that they'll,
- 58:52were they having an affair as in,
- 58:54they were with other relationships?
- 58:56Both and apparently.
- 58:57Oh wow.
- 58:58And then everyone's actually coming down on the girl
- 59:00that was next to them just laughing,
- 59:02being like, that's shit that she knew.
- 59:05Oh no, she doesn't know.
- 59:07She's laughing, like she knows.
- 59:09Oh, yeah.
- 59:10Oh come off it.
- 59:12You don't know what fault if you're a friend
- 59:14of someone that's having an affair.
- 59:15You're not encouraging them to go into work the next day
- 59:18if that was your company.
- 59:21It would just, you would just never expect the virality
- 59:24of that to go like the white, the children,
- 59:28like, you've a year.
- 59:29I'm just pretty bad.
- 59:30It's so bad.
- 59:31And then everyone's blaming us.
- 59:33Oh my gosh.
- 59:34And I'm like, oh my gosh guys,
- 59:35like you were the ones doing the dirty,
- 59:36like just accept it.
- 59:38Yeah.
- 59:39Doing the dirty.
- 59:40Like doing the dirty.
- 59:42Anyway, yeah.
- 59:45I want, yeah, some virality would be great,
- 59:47but not at that expense.
- 59:48Yeah, don't go in like having a affair
- 59:50with someone in the stock market or something,
- 59:52maybe not.
- 59:53So when in the stock market?
