- 0:11I was born to kill it.
- 0:15I was meant to win.
- 0:17I am down and willing,
- 0:18so I will find a way.
- 0:19It took a minute,
- 0:20now it didn't have to ride away.
- 0:21When it get hot in the kitchen,
- 0:23you decide to stay.
- 0:25That's how a winner's made.
- 0:26Stick a fork in the head.
- 0:35what's going on everybody
- 0:36welcome to the Clydesdale
- 0:37media podcast where we are
- 0:39featuring the athletes of
- 0:40the 2024 legends masters
- 0:43crossfit games and I'm so
- 0:45pumped to have with me
- 0:47james st ledger what's
- 0:48going on james hey thanks
- 0:50for having me so um I'm
- 0:53gonna dive right into this
- 0:55yeah you qualified for the
- 0:57games during the covet year yeah
- 1:01What a bummer, dude.
- 1:02I know.
- 1:02I mean, I should, I,
- 1:03I should have been excited.
- 1:04I was excited.
- 1:05I was, I was proper pumped.
- 1:06And then, yeah,
- 1:08I found out in a very
- 1:09roundabout way that it wasn't happening.
- 1:13Um, but I, I, yeah, qualified, did it.
- 1:18And then, yeah,
- 1:19it's taken a few more years
- 1:20to recall if I,
- 1:22so I know here in the States,
- 1:25we have very few masters
- 1:27aged in-person events, um,
- 1:31And the whole season is
- 1:32pretty much online.
- 1:34You finally make it to that
- 1:36big stage where you're
- 1:37going to get to show your
- 1:38stuff at an in-person
- 1:39competition and it gets
- 1:41taken away from you.
- 1:44Is there anything you get to
- 1:46do in the UK to help with that?
- 1:49In terms of alternative competition?
- 1:54Yeah.
- 1:55Yeah.
- 1:56There are other events.
- 1:58Most of our larger events
- 2:01have a Masters category within them.
- 2:04Some of it is standalone
- 2:05Masters and some of it is
- 2:06like pairs events or teams of three.
- 2:09However, with that being COVID year,
- 2:11pretty much the whole world shut down.
- 2:14So in any other circumstance
- 2:18or situation and every other year,
- 2:20if I've decided to go for
- 2:21it and for whatever reason
- 2:23it's been cancelled,
- 2:24there have been alternatives.
- 2:26But yeah, that year, it just literally,
- 2:28the brakes were slammed
- 2:30pretty hard on it.
- 2:32Yeah, here in the States,
- 2:32we had the Masters Fitness
- 2:34Collective do a competition
- 2:38to kind of simulate the games.
- 2:40They couldn't call themselves the games,
- 2:41but like invited everybody
- 2:43who made it and tried to
- 2:45carry on with a ton of
- 2:47safety protocol and hardly
- 2:49anybody in the building.
- 2:51Yeah.
- 2:52That's great.
- 2:54And that would have been lovely,
- 2:56but our government just had
- 2:59slightly different rules on
- 3:01what you could do and where
- 3:02you could do it and who you
- 3:03could be around.
- 3:04And so any competition that
- 3:06might've been pushed
- 3:07forward would have just
- 3:08been another virtual event.
- 3:12So now it's four years later
- 3:14and you finally get that
- 3:17next qualification.
- 3:19Yes.
- 3:20New age group category.
- 3:22And so now, for the first time ever,
- 3:25you're going to be heading
- 3:26to the CrossFit Games.
- 3:27Yes.
- 3:28And I cannot wait.
- 3:30It's been a long time coming.
- 3:33And that's a healthy trip for you.
- 3:34You got to come overseas to do this,
- 3:37but it means that much to you?
- 3:40Yeah.
- 3:40I think along with what most
- 3:43people do when they enter the sport,
- 3:45They've seen a few videos and they're like,
- 3:47I can do that.
- 3:48I'm going to the games.
- 3:49And yet I was one of those people.
- 3:51I was like, I'm going to the games.
- 3:53I just didn't quite envisage
- 3:55how long it would take and
- 3:56the route that it would take me down.
- 4:00At the time when I first started it,
- 4:03regionals were a thing.
- 4:05So my initial first goal was
- 4:07I'm going to make it to regionals.
- 4:10And for whatever reason, sickness, injury,
- 4:14not quite having muscle ups,
- 4:16not quite having double unders,
- 4:17believe it or not.
- 4:18Something always tripped me up each year.
- 4:21And then I finally qualified
- 4:22for regionals in 2018.
- 4:23And little did I know that
- 4:25would be the last regionals
- 4:26they ever did.
- 4:28Yeah.
- 4:30You're kind of cursed.
- 4:31Yeah, I know.
- 4:36So when I look at your Instagram,
- 4:38it's very fitness forward.
- 4:40Has fitness always been like
- 4:42a big part of your life?
- 4:44Uh, yeah, from a young age, uh,
- 4:46I did gymnastics until I
- 4:47was about six or seven.
- 4:50It might even have been eight.
- 4:51Um,
- 4:53and then I started swimming and I did
- 4:56swimming right.
- 4:57And through up until uni, uh,
- 4:59with swimming, I've,
- 5:01I was doing all the various school sports,
- 5:03um, played rugby to a decent level, uh,
- 5:07gave up rugby because I was
- 5:08getting squashed every game
- 5:09stuck to swimming.
- 5:11And then a couple of years
- 5:12after I stopped swimming, yeah,
- 5:13I discovered CrossFit and
- 5:15it just sort of like
- 5:16scratched the edge that I
- 5:18had of being competitive
- 5:21and trying to always like
- 5:22further and better myself.
- 5:24I'm the oldest of four boys.
- 5:26And so naturally,
- 5:27if one of us does something,
- 5:29the other three have to
- 5:30give it a go and try and at
- 5:32least do it or do it better
- 5:33or faster or whatever it is.
- 5:35So yeah,
- 5:36we've always been competitive and
- 5:38sort of like driven each other along.
- 5:41So I don't know if you know this,
- 5:43there's some breaking news
- 5:43going on right now.
- 5:46As of five minutes ago,
- 5:47they've released the events.
- 5:49Are they?
- 5:50I've been waiting for this for so long.
- 5:52Do you mind if we go ahead
- 5:54and pull them up here on the show?
- 5:55Yeah, do it.
- 5:56Yeah, yeah.
- 5:57Get a live reaction as well from me.
- 5:59Yeah.
- 6:00So here we go.
- 6:02Event one.
- 6:04Four rounds for time.
- 6:05600 meter run.
- 6:07Round one, five deadlifts.
- 6:10Round two, 10 deadlifts.
- 6:12Round three, 15 deadlifts.
- 6:14Round four, 20 deadlifts.
- 6:16The barbell is 255 and 180.
- 6:17255.
- 6:17Trying to now do calculations about 120.
- 6:21Yes, 120, 130-ish.
- 6:22Okay, cool.
- 6:24That's going to be very hamstring-loaded.
- 6:33Uh, I love a deadlift.
- 6:36Um, I'm not, don't love running so much.
- 6:39That's probably due to my
- 6:40swimming background and
- 6:41having like really big feet.
- 6:44So yeah, not an actual runner, but yeah.
- 6:45Happy with that one.
- 6:48Um, event two, four rounds for time,
- 6:51four rope climbs to 15 feet,
- 6:53six sandbag carries one 50,
- 6:56140 foot handstand walk
- 6:59time cap 12 minutes.
- 7:01Yeah.
- 7:01Loving that.
- 7:04Is that handstand walk on broken?
- 7:05I guess we don't know yet, but yeah.
- 7:06Um, yeah, I love gymnastics.
- 7:08Um, I love sandbags.
- 7:11That's a good one.
- 7:13Yeah.
- 7:13The unbroken thing might
- 7:15vary from age group to age group.
- 7:17Yeah.
- 7:20Event three for time, 25 overhead squats,
- 7:2380-foot dumbbell walking lunge,
- 7:2625 overhead squats,
- 7:28time cap three minutes.
- 7:31Okay.
- 7:31Yeah,
- 7:32I was wondering what they would do
- 7:33for these very, very short workouts.
- 7:35On the initial schedule they released,
- 7:39there was two of these really short ones,
- 7:40so I was wondering what it
- 7:41was going to be.
- 7:42What's the loading for the barbell?
- 7:45Barbell is 75, 55.
- 7:46Oh, that's dangerous.
- 7:48That's really light.
- 7:50Yeah.
- 7:51And so the dumbbells are 50-30?
- 7:5250-35.
- 7:52Yeah.
- 7:53That's going to burn for sure.
- 7:54But yeah, I like that one.
- 7:57Yeah.
- 7:57Event four for time.
- 8:01Snatch Speed Ladder.
- 8:01Four at 135.95.
- 8:02Three at 165.115.
- 8:03Two at 195.135.
- 8:03And one at 225.155.
- 8:20Time cap, two minutes.
- 8:25Yeah, that'd be good.
- 8:29I like the look of them.
- 8:30I'm just unsure as to what
- 8:33everyone else would be like on it.
- 8:34But yeah, I quite like that.
- 8:35That's good.
- 8:37Event five for time, 75 wall balls,
- 8:4040 shoulder to overhead,
- 8:4230 dumbbell stepovers, 40 dumbbell snatch,
- 8:4575 wall balls.
- 8:47Time cap, 15 minutes.
- 8:49Wall ball, 2014.
- 8:50Box, 2420.
- 8:50Barbell, 115, 180.
- 8:52And dumbbell, 5035.
- 8:53Yeah.
- 8:53In the past,
- 8:55wall balls have tripped me up.
- 9:07in comparison to my peers.
- 9:08Um,
- 9:09but that's just a bit of a burner
- 9:11already.
- 9:12Yeah.
- 9:13Yeah.
- 9:13I quite like that one.
- 9:16Event six round one, four minute work,
- 9:20one minute rest round two,
- 9:22three minute work,
- 9:23one minute rest round three,
- 9:24two minutes of work for completion,
- 9:27105 or 80 cows on the echo
- 9:30bike by an each round
- 9:33starts with 75 double unders,
- 9:3520 chest of our pull-ups.
- 9:38Okay, cool.
- 9:41So that's,
- 9:41I'm trying to get the format in my head.
- 9:42So skip, pull,
- 9:45and then just hop on the
- 9:45bike until you've done your cows.
- 9:48Yep.
- 9:50Yeah.
- 9:50That's going to get Lenny seven,
- 9:52the standard.
- 9:55Oh, I'm happy with this.
- 9:58Cause I've done this twice
- 10:01in the past few months.
- 10:05So yeah.
- 10:07Happy.
- 10:09Event eight, eight rounds for time,
- 10:12eight bar facing burpees,
- 10:14eight toes to bar, one clean, 255, 180.
- 10:17Time cap, eight minutes.
- 10:23Power clean.
- 10:24I'll be happy with power clean.
- 10:26Squat clean,
- 10:26that's going to get quite
- 10:29painful on the legs.
- 10:30But yeah, that's a good one.
- 10:34Event nine,
- 10:35five minutes to establish a one
- 10:37rep max front squat.
- 10:40Okay.
- 10:40I wasn't too sure if they
- 10:43would do a standalone strength.
- 10:46I'm happy they have done.
- 10:50Yeah.
- 10:50Okay.
- 10:51That's half decent.
- 10:53Although as event nine,
- 10:54you're not going to have much legs left.
- 10:58And then finally event 10, four time,
- 11:02eight, 12, 16,
- 11:04single arm dumbbell thruster,
- 11:06bar muscle up,
- 11:08Time cap, eight minutes.
- 11:09Dumbbell is 70, 50.
- 11:12Oh,
- 11:12on the assumption that's an even split
- 11:15on the arms.
- 11:18That's good.
- 11:18That's the last workout as well.
- 11:19They told us yesterday that
- 11:21there's going to be a cut
- 11:22leading into the top.
- 11:25There's a cut going into the
- 11:26last event and it's the top
- 11:2750% move forward.
- 11:29Yeah.
- 11:30And they rejiggered the schedule.
- 11:32So there was meant to be two
- 11:33workouts on the Sunday on
- 11:35the initial info we were told.
- 11:37And then, yeah,
- 11:38yesterday we were told that
- 11:40it's just going to be the one.
- 11:41So that's, that's, that's a good, heavy,
- 11:45heavy and different workout
- 11:46to finish off.
- 11:47Yeah.
- 11:47I like it.
- 11:48Yeah.
- 11:48That's a,
- 11:49that's a heavy dumbbell thruster
- 11:50to finish the week.
- 11:52I mean,
- 11:52I can't say I'm going to do well on it.
- 11:54I just like the look of it
- 11:54and it's going to be good to have a,
- 11:56have a go at it.
- 11:57Yeah.
- 11:58If, if I make it that far.
- 12:01Yeah.
- 12:02All right.
- 12:03So you were here for the breaking news.
- 12:06Excellent.
- 12:06Thank you.
- 12:07All the events announced now.
- 12:09Good.
- 12:09Yeah,
- 12:11it's going to be a tricky one to try
- 12:13these out just because of
- 12:14my travel schedule.
- 12:16I'm going to hit a couple of
- 12:18them just to get some feels for it.
- 12:23That's a great question.
- 12:24Like we're less than a week away.
- 12:26At this point, like,
- 12:28not going to get any better
- 12:29between now and next
- 12:31thursday right it's just
- 12:33really just feeling them
- 12:35out so you know kind of
- 12:36what to expect yeah 100
- 12:37yeah yeah you're not going
- 12:40to get any better but you
- 12:41could get worse um just by
- 12:44doing too much um yeah it's
- 12:47what we are now thursday
- 12:48now I fly saturday land the
- 12:52same day but it's probably
- 12:53going to take a day and a
- 12:54half just to get used to my
- 12:55bearings and managing the time difference
- 12:59And then it will be, what,
- 13:00three days before event time.
- 13:03So yeah, three days to have a little play.
- 13:05I'll pop into a gym over there.
- 13:08So whenever I fly west,
- 13:11it doesn't really affect me.
- 13:13When I fly east, it kills me.
- 13:17Yeah.
- 13:18Coming home is going to be tricky.
- 13:20Yeah,
- 13:20that's going to be rough on you going
- 13:22home.
- 13:22But hopefully it means
- 13:24you'll recover pretty quick
- 13:26for the event itself.
- 13:28Yes.
- 13:29Yeah.
- 13:29Yeah.
- 13:30Um, yeah, coming over shouldn't be, I mean,
- 13:32it shouldn't be too much of a problem,
- 13:34but the timings for my age group,
- 13:38it's the equivalent of
- 13:39working out at midnight.
- 13:42Um, and I normally get things done,
- 13:47try to juggle around childcare,
- 13:49normally get things done in the mornings.
- 13:51Uh,
- 13:52then I occasionally train early evening.
- 13:56I don't train at midnight.
- 13:57Um, so that's the only.
- 13:59difference in the system really.
- 14:00I thought everybody trained at midnight.
- 14:03No, it's been a while.
- 14:05Yeah.
- 14:06Um, so are you,
- 14:08are you with any kind of
- 14:09camp or any kind of
- 14:10programming or do you do your own thing?
- 14:12Uh, I've had the same coach now for,
- 14:16I want to say nine years,
- 14:19ever since I've started to
- 14:20try and actually chase this properly.
- 14:22Um,
- 14:23I've been with a company and within
- 14:25that company,
- 14:26I've had pretty much the same coach, uh,
- 14:28throughout,
- 14:29A guy's called Sam Smith.
- 14:32And he lives in Arizona.
- 14:34And everything's done remotely, naturally.
- 14:37So this will actually be the
- 14:38first time I've met him.
- 14:39So we've done plenty of
- 14:41video calls and catch-ups
- 14:42and whatnot to discuss things,
- 14:44but I've not actually met
- 14:45him face-to-face.
- 14:47So he's coming with you to the games?
- 14:50Yes.
- 14:51Yeah, yeah.
- 14:51That's cool.
- 14:56You're a husband and a father.
- 14:59Correct.
- 14:59Yeah.
- 15:00How do you balance all of
- 15:02that with the training you
- 15:04have to do for this?
- 15:09Oh, yep.
- 15:11I'm quite a good juggler.
- 15:14The wife is really supportive,
- 15:17as are various family
- 15:19members when we call upon
- 15:20babysitting needs.
- 15:22But training wise,
- 15:25Try and get things done, as I said,
- 15:27in the mornings where possible,
- 15:28just before the kids are up.
- 15:30So I'm not with them.
- 15:34In the evenings, if we've got a babysitter,
- 15:37then the wife and I will
- 15:38nip off to the gym together.
- 15:40That's kind of like our date
- 15:41day or date time.
- 15:42It's the one time that we
- 15:43are together without the kids.
- 15:46And then with my job,
- 15:49we're encouraged to
- 15:50maintain a level of fitness.
- 15:52So within that,
- 15:52we're afforded a bit of gym time as well.
- 15:55So I can train when I'm at
- 15:56work and the rest of it is
- 15:57just juggling around when
- 15:58the kids are either awake or asleep.
- 16:01What do you do for a job?
- 16:02I'm a firearms officer with the police.
- 16:05Okay.
- 16:06So in the UK, um,
- 16:10we don't routinely carry firearms.
- 16:13Um, there's like,
- 16:15there's certain teams that do.
- 16:17So I'm on one of those teams.
- 16:18I've been doing it for about 16 years now.
- 16:22Okay.
- 16:23Been a while.
- 16:25Did I see you coach as well?
- 16:27Yes.
- 16:28Yes.
- 16:29I used to co-run a gym
- 16:31before COVID dismantled that.
- 16:35And then, yeah,
- 16:36I've moved around a couple
- 16:37of gyms and I currently
- 16:38coach the competitors squad at the gym.
- 16:42And I also do online
- 16:44coaching and programming
- 16:45for some of those guys and
- 16:46also other people that aren't at the gym.
- 16:49Does being a coach help you be an athlete?
- 16:54It opens my mind to more
- 16:58things that I might not
- 17:00necessarily just be going
- 17:01through on my own.
- 17:05Yeah,
- 17:05it gives me a broader understanding
- 17:09of what a multitude of
- 17:10people are going through.
- 17:11And with that,
- 17:13sometimes I can relate to it very well.
- 17:15So I can have an
- 17:16understanding and we can
- 17:17have a nice discussion about it.
- 17:19And then other times there's
- 17:20things that are thrown my
- 17:21way that are big curveballs
- 17:22and I've then got to
- 17:24learn,
- 17:25learn a bit more about the human
- 17:27psychology of things.
- 17:29And yeah, it's, it's good.
- 17:34What, when you're competing,
- 17:37how much of your inner
- 17:38dialogue do you fight with
- 17:40during a workout?
- 17:46I've never been in the point.
- 17:48I thought I once
- 17:50I'll come back to that.
- 17:51I've never been to the point
- 17:52where I've not been able to do something.
- 17:56It's always,
- 17:56it's more been about how hard can I push?
- 18:01And yeah,
- 18:02you've got to have a little talk
- 18:04with yourself about, you know,
- 18:06how hard do you want this?
- 18:07Like, what does it mean to you?
- 18:08You do replay various conversations,
- 18:13you know,
- 18:14remembering all the training
- 18:15hours you've put in,
- 18:16all the sacrifices you've
- 18:17made to get to that certain point.
- 18:20And yeah,
- 18:21once that little flick in your
- 18:23head is switched, then you can obviously,
- 18:25well, yeah,
- 18:25I usually bury myself quite
- 18:27deep in a dark hole.
- 18:29Make it hurt accordingly.
- 18:32Yeah,
- 18:32going back to the thing I said where
- 18:34I've never not been able to do a workout,
- 18:35there was a workout that
- 18:37completely broke me.
- 18:38I want to say it was 2017.
- 18:40Might have been 18 at the
- 18:43French Throwdown.
- 18:46Double dumbbells, pull-ups and
- 18:49So double kettlebell thrusters,
- 18:51burpees and pull-ups, I think it was.
- 18:54And for whatever reason,
- 18:56mainly the heat that weekend,
- 18:57because it was when Europe
- 18:58had a massive heat wave and
- 18:59the air conditioning unit
- 19:00inside the Velodrome was broken,
- 19:03I just wanted to stop.
- 19:04You can see the whole pack
- 19:08of the heat was moving past me.
- 19:10I was probably last in my heat, I think.
- 19:14And that played on my mind,
- 19:16and then the heat.
- 19:16And yeah, I just...
- 19:17just that's the first time
- 19:18I've ever not wanted to be
- 19:20there and do something and
- 19:23ready to throw the towel in
- 19:24with three minutes left and
- 19:25I was like no just let's
- 19:26just keep sticking it out
- 19:27keep chipping away again
- 19:29the whole inner dialogue of
- 19:31you train hard for this you
- 19:33know don't let yourself
- 19:34down don't let your
- 19:36supporters down yeah
- 19:37eventually finished the workout um
- 19:41Went back to the room that
- 19:43night and the missus had a word with me.
- 19:44I was like, what are you doing?
- 19:46Do you want to be here or not?
- 19:47I was like, well, yeah.
- 19:48It's just that workout was just horrible.
- 19:50So I came out the next day,
- 19:51absolutely smashed the
- 19:53first workout that day, came sixth.
- 19:56And if it weren't for a silly mistake,
- 19:57probably could have won it.
- 20:00So yeah, inner dialogue is strong.
- 20:04When you, when you almost quit, right?
- 20:07Yeah.
- 20:07Do you beat yourself up as
- 20:09much as the missus wanted to beat you up?
- 20:13I think she might've been
- 20:15coming at it from a
- 20:16slightly different angle in
- 20:18terms of she knows how much
- 20:19it means to me to,
- 20:20to do this and to do well.
- 20:23Whereas at the time I was
- 20:24like pure survival mode.
- 20:26It's like for whatever reason,
- 20:27and the heat was a massive factor.
- 20:30I just need to survive and
- 20:32get through the workout as
- 20:33opposed to push myself anymore.
- 20:36I think because I've been
- 20:36training and doing various
- 20:38sports for so long, if I push too hard,
- 20:42I can tip myself over the
- 20:44edge and then recovery
- 20:45becomes a massive factor
- 20:46then that I'm not recovering properly.
- 20:48So yeah,
- 20:50that workout was definitely more
- 20:51about just like survival.
- 20:56Sorry, one second.
- 20:58My door has just turned up.
- 21:03I'm busy.
- 21:04Sorry, one second.
- 21:06Wait.
- 21:08Elsie?
- 21:08Sorry, guys.
- 21:11One second.
- 21:13Elsie?
- 21:16Elsie?
- 21:16Can you take Elsa upstairs, darling?
- 21:24I'm still on this call, darling.
- 21:27Okay.
- 21:28Okay, sorry.
- 21:32It's not about that balance
- 21:34you have to enjoy.
- 21:35Yes.
- 21:37You stay here.
- 21:38I'll go upstairs.
- 21:39Get somewhere quiet.
- 21:56okay sorry guys I'm back
- 21:59it's all good it's all good
- 22:01um usually it's my dog
- 22:02getting in the way he's
- 22:05definitely easier to lock
- 22:06out the room though yeah um
- 22:09so when when your your
- 22:11brain does flip into that
- 22:13like I'm gonna fight for
- 22:14this and then you lean into
- 22:16it yeah how good do you
- 22:18feel after that workout uh
- 22:21yeah good the adrenaline is
- 22:23usually riding high um
- 22:26more often than not the
- 22:27result has then been good
- 22:29so yeah definitely riding
- 22:30off those definitely riding
- 22:33off the position you're
- 22:34finishing um more so than
- 22:38the performance I've not
- 22:39yet been in the position
- 22:40where I've done the best I
- 22:43can and I'm also then happy
- 22:45with the place I've been in
- 22:46if it's like way down the pack
- 22:50So speak, so going in that direction,
- 22:53what are your realistic
- 22:54expectations for yourself
- 22:57at this year's games?
- 23:03Tricky one.
- 23:04I'm not trying not to place
- 23:07too much expectation on it.
- 23:10And although I will be
- 23:11looking at the leaderboard,
- 23:11I'm going to try my hardest
- 23:13not to be leaderboarding.
- 23:15Every other event I've done,
- 23:17including the Opens,
- 23:19the ones that I've
- 23:20performed at best are where
- 23:22I've gone in with no expectation,
- 23:25gone in to enjoy it and not
- 23:28looked a leaderboard.
- 23:28And for whatever reason,
- 23:31not carrying that stress
- 23:32around with you is always paid off.
- 23:37Maybe the start of the
- 23:38workouts on that particular
- 23:39year or the particular
- 23:40event has just fallen well
- 23:42in how they've done the programming.
- 23:45Um, but yeah, if I,
- 23:47if I go in with too much of
- 23:48an expectation,
- 23:49I don't hit it that a hundred percent,
- 23:53it's going to play on my head.
- 23:54And I know it's not over
- 23:55until the fat lady sings
- 23:57and the last event is all
- 23:58done and dusted.
- 24:00And there's always moving days.
- 24:02But if I'm focusing on the
- 24:03fact that I'm either where I want to be,
- 24:05or I'm not where I want to be, yeah,
- 24:08that will definitely carry
- 24:10over a level of stress.
- 24:11I don't need to be managing.
- 24:14or carrying with me.
- 24:15So if I can manage it and
- 24:16keep that stress level down,
- 24:18I find that my performance
- 24:19is often a lot better.
- 24:20I would, however, with that,
- 24:24keeping in hand today,
- 24:24I would love top 10.
- 24:27Pushing for top five is good.
- 24:31I kind of think first,
- 24:33maybe second are locked in,
- 24:36but the rest of us, yeah, third,
- 24:40three total,
- 24:4110th maybe 15th we could all
- 24:43be fighting for those near
- 24:45podium positions but again
- 24:47I've got no idea how these
- 24:49workouts have fallen for
- 24:50other people it could be
- 24:51their wheelhouse workouts
- 24:53or they could hate them I have no idea
- 24:56it's so hard to tell like
- 24:58where you even stand
- 24:59because online competitions
- 25:00are not the same as what
- 25:03it's going to be like in person, right?
- 25:05Yeah.
- 25:06Best in person competitor.
- 25:08And you have no idea where
- 25:09you stand because
- 25:10everything's been online up till now.
- 25:12Yeah.
- 25:13Yeah, totally.
- 25:14I think the only expectation
- 25:15I would like to carry
- 25:16forward is to execute my plan.
- 25:20So again,
- 25:21I've only literally had that
- 25:23quick glance of the workouts and,
- 25:25i like most of them I think
- 25:28I know how I'm going to
- 25:28attack all of them and as
- 25:31long as I can stay to my
- 25:33game plan and execute as I
- 25:35need to the leaderboard
- 25:37will be whatever the
- 25:37leaderboard is so as long
- 25:39as I do what I go into what
- 25:42I'm planning to do in the
- 25:43actual workout and the plan
- 25:45of attack for it if I can
- 25:46execute that well and to my plan
- 25:49Then I almost don't care
- 25:51where I fall in the leaderboard.
- 25:52If I'm near the top, brilliant.
- 25:54If I'm near the bottom, that's also fine.
- 25:56Providing I executed as per plan.
- 26:00So this has been a long time coming.
- 26:02How important is it for you
- 26:04to make sure that you soak
- 26:05in the experience?
- 26:09Yeah, quite, quite important.
- 26:11Um,
- 26:13going back to regionals when I didn't
- 26:15realize that that was going
- 26:16to be the last.
- 26:18regionals experience um I
- 26:21did take a lot of time back
- 26:23and trying to soak it in
- 26:25walking around just without
- 26:27overthinking too much um
- 26:29really taking my time and
- 26:31sort of trying to immerse
- 26:31myself with the other
- 26:33athletes uh and again
- 26:36similarly I feel this time
- 26:37um I would love to
- 26:39re-qualify and come back um
- 26:41in future years again I've
- 26:43got no idea on how the
- 26:45crossfit season is going to unfold
- 26:49And yeah,
- 26:49definitely going to be taking in
- 26:50as much as possible,
- 26:52but while still trying to
- 26:53have my head in the game.
- 26:55Corey Leonard says control
- 26:56what you can control.
- 26:57Let the rest fall away.
- 26:59Yeah, exactly.
- 27:00Yeah.
- 27:00Yeah.
- 27:01Yeah.
- 27:01Fully in agreement with that.
- 27:05If I do my best, that's all I can ask for.
- 27:07And then the leaderboard
- 27:08will be what the
- 27:09leaderboard is and everything else will.
- 27:11Yeah.
- 27:11As she says, it will just,
- 27:13it will just fall into
- 27:14place as it was meant to.
- 27:16Yeah, big props to Corey.
- 27:17He's the one that let me
- 27:18know that those workouts were released.
- 27:21Thank you.
- 27:23So we were able to share
- 27:24those in the show.
- 27:26Well, James, thank you so much for this.
- 27:28This has been a blast.
- 27:30We're going to be there in Birmingham.
- 27:32We're going to be filming a
- 27:33behind the scenes.
- 27:34Excellent.
- 27:34I'll make sure I come and stop by.
- 27:35Say hi.
- 27:37ellie hiller myself will be
- 27:38backstage in the corrals in
- 27:39the warm-up areas uh just
- 27:41kind of capturing
- 27:43everybody's experience
- 27:45through this uh this
- 27:46weekend and uh we'll put it
- 27:48together in a multi-episode
- 27:50documentary it should be
- 27:53out after it's all over and
- 27:54hopefully that allows you
- 27:56to remember your experience
- 27:57as well oh thank you yeah
- 27:58that'll be good yeah I
- 28:00can't wait to meet you in person
- 28:02Yeah, likewise.
- 28:02Likewise.
- 28:03I seem to be doing an awful
- 28:04lot of things online at the moment.
- 28:06So yeah,
- 28:06getting face-to-face with people
- 28:07will be brilliant.
- 28:09Yeah.
- 28:10Well, thank you, James.
- 28:11Thank you to everybody in
- 28:11the chat for being here.
- 28:12We will see everybody next
