- 0:31Amen. Take your Bibles.
- 0:32Open them to Genesis chapter 18 verse by verse through the Book
- 0:37of Genesis on our midweek, Bible study, and on the weekends were
- 0:41in the book of Acts. So God has us as a church going
- 0:45back to Beginnings. Not only the beginning of
- 0:48everything in the heart of God, for the world.
- 0:51But then on the weekends, the beginning of the church and what
- 0:53does God want from his church? And we're studying right now,
- 0:57the life of Abraham, this man of great faith.
- 1:00At the ripe old age of 99. He was circumcised and although
- 1:06that would be a very painful thing for a man that's 99 years
- 1:10old, it's really an act of obedience and it reminds us that
- 1:15obedience sometimes is very painful and it has a
- 1:19long-lasting pain at all attached to it.
- 1:22I mean it's far more painful to live a life of Disobedience.
- 1:26I like to think in my own life, if I can remember properly.
- 1:30Walking in the spirit that I would much rather have the
- 1:33consequences of obedience than the consequences of
- 1:36Disobedience, because I think in living in the dark world that
- 1:39we're in right now. It's going to be painful.
- 1:41Either way, you have a world that's antagonistic toward God.
- 1:44You have a world filled with Temptations the World, the Flesh
- 1:47and the devil always pressing in.
- 1:50So there is going to be paying Jesus said there will be
- 1:52tribulation to have good cheer, he's overcome the world, but
- 1:57here Abraham's in a good place. Is now within a chapter at a
- 2:02high point in his life, he's obedient he's compassionate,
- 2:07he's hospitable and these are wonderful byproducts of living
- 2:11by faith. I ask you to open a Genesis 18.
- 2:14Would you hold your place there? Let's go back to Galatians for a
- 2:17moment Galatians, chapter 6. Galatians chapter 6, and when
- 2:23you get there, I want to draw your attention to verse 7.
- 2:27As Paul is writing to the Believers in the region of
- 2:30galatia, he has some strong encouraging words and he says in
- 2:35Galatians, 6:7 do not be deceived, God is Not mocked for
- 2:40whatever amount so's that he will also reap for.
- 2:44He Who sows to his flesh, shall of the flesh, reap corruption.
- 2:48But he who sows to the spirit will of the spirit reap
- 2:52everlasting life and let us not grow weary while doing good for
- 2:57Due season, we shall reap. If we don't lose heart,
- 3:00therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to
- 3:04all especially to those who are of the household of faith.
- 3:09And of the many things we learn in this section of scripture and
- 3:12Galatians, we learned that we can expect.
- 3:15We can expect great things in our lives.
- 3:17When we live righteously sewing, spiritual things you can have an
- 3:23expectation from God to reap. What you sow?
- 3:27Hey. I know that on the negative side
- 3:29of this that's probably the way that we use this most often as a
- 3:32warning. Don't sow to the flesh it's not
- 3:35going to end good and that's true but I also want you to know
- 3:39the same truth applies to those that sow in the spirit you can
- 3:42expect God to honor his word that you'll reap everlasting
- 3:46life. When you sow to the spirit, your
- 3:48family will be blessed, your home will be blessed, your
- 3:51workplace will be blessed. And I think the the issue that
- 3:56Paul attaches, this Is weariness.
- 3:59Its weary, you can get weary sowing to the flesh, but you can
- 4:04also grow weary sewing to the spirit like consciously
- 4:08continually. I mean, imagine God comes to you
- 4:12at the age of 99 and says, look, here's the sign in the Seal of
- 4:15my Covenant, you need to get circumcised physically and all
- 4:20the males need to be circumcised in order to sow to the spirit,
- 4:24it's going to be painful. There will be pain attached to
- 4:27it. It's not the pain of sin, it's
- 4:30the pain of obedience and in a world that we try to avoid so
- 4:34much pain and suffering. It's it's best just to say, you
- 4:37know what Lord, I know it's coming.
- 4:40And I know it's going to come is with this fight and the battle
- 4:43for righteousness in my life, but I can sow to the spirit and
- 4:47when you and I sow to the spirit, we won't be
- 4:49disappointed. It may take a day.
- 4:53Or a week or a month or maybe even years but you can Bank on
- 4:57this promise. If you sow to the spirit, you'll
- 4:59reap everlasting life and I would be remiss if I didn't warn
- 5:03you. If you sow to the flesh, it
- 5:05might be a day. It might be a week.
- 5:09It might be a month or years, but you will reap the
- 5:12consequences of sowing to the flesh.
- 5:15So, here's a high point in Abraham's life verse 1 of
- 5:18chapter 18, then the Lord appeared to him by the terebinth
- 5:22trees at Memory. As he was sitting in the tent
- 5:25Door, In the Heat of the day. So he lifted his eyes, and
- 5:29looked, and behold three men were standing by him.
- 5:32And when he saw them, he ran from the tent door, to meet them
- 5:35and bowed himself to the ground and said my Lord.
- 5:39If I have now found favor in your sight, do not pass on by
- 5:42your servant, please let a little water be brought and wash
- 5:46your feet and rest yourselves under the tree.
- 5:50And I will bring a morsel of bread that you may refresh your
- 5:53hearts after that, you may pass by in as much as you have, come
- 5:58to your servant and they said, do as you have said.
- 6:03So here's Abraham resting, taking a nap In the Heat of the
- 6:07day. I think spiritually, you could
- 6:09say he's resting in the Lord because I when you're obedient
- 6:12you can rest you rest better when you live a life of
- 6:16obedience. There's a real peace and
- 6:20Associated with abiding in Christ and I think Abraham's
- 6:24experiencing this long before the New Covenant and then I
- 6:27don't know where these three visitors show up and you know,
- 6:30Abraham doesn't know it yet but these are actually two angels
- 6:34and the Lord himself, this is a christophany or a theophany.
- 6:39You see it later on. If you just want to see it, jump
- 6:43over to verse 22 of chapter 18, the men turned away from there
- 6:47and went towards Sodom, but Abraham still stood.
- 6:50Notice before the Lord and again in verse 33.
- 6:54So the Lord went his way as soon as he would finish speaking with
- 6:58Abraham and Abraham returned to his place.
- 7:00And then in verse 1 of chapter 19, the two angels came to Sodom
- 7:04in the evening and lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom and
- 7:07when lot saw them Heroes to meet them and bowed himself and his
- 7:11face toward the Lord, you got two angels and a pre-incarnate
- 7:15appearance of Jesus Christ. Pre-incarnate means before the
- 7:19Eternal son. Of God took on a human body in
- 7:22the womb of Mary. He appeared from time to time
- 7:25and this was one of those appearances.
- 7:27Now notice when Abraham sees them, he has such a broad deep
- 7:31heart of hospitality that he runs out to them and invites
- 7:35them to stay and you know put this into context Abraham's 100
- 7:38years old. That guy just got circumcised.
- 7:42He's resting on a hot day and he runs to them to care for them.
- 7:48I mean, it's stepping into the situation, taking advantage, and
- 7:53opportunity to meet the Lord. Or in this case, all he knows
- 7:57yet is to meet these visitors but knowing that, this is a
- 8:02pre-incarnate appearance of the Lord.
- 8:04Let me ask you a question. How do you meet the Lord today?
- 8:08And what is your attitude? What does that look like?
- 8:12I mean, we have a familiar routine.
- 8:14The alarm goes off in the morning.
- 8:17And then we have a choice, many hit a button that says, going
- 8:22back to sleep, and we hit it. And and I don't even have that
- 8:26on mine anymore. And I use my phone.
- 8:28How many of you use your phone for an alarm now.
- 8:30Yeah, so it takes a long time to find that little button, you
- 8:33just like, you know, if you have the wrong alarm on and they just
- 8:36really wakes you up and you can't go back to sleep.
- 8:39But then what do you do? I mean, is it just the drudgery
- 8:42of the day and the difficulties before you or is there a
- 8:45consciousness of the God, how do you meet the Lord in the
- 8:48morning? First thought.
- 8:52Because he is there, you know it's time at opportunity for
- 8:56times of devotion or prayer or have on that same phone that
- 9:00your alarm. You can download the Bible app
- 9:02and have it read to you in the morning as the word of God is
- 9:05being saturating. Your heart.
- 9:07I mean, do you get up in the morning and go?
- 9:09Oh, lord, it's so good to be with you.
- 9:12Or do you wake up in the morning and say good lord.
- 9:15It's morning. I better get off to work.
- 9:19another thing I noticed here is how normal this situation is.
- 9:25So I think we over spiritualize things in our relationship with
- 9:29God. But this is very normal.
- 9:31Got a guy resting. Healing up after a surgery, he's
- 9:35on the heat of the day. He sees visitors, it's
- 9:39customary, it's hospitable to go out to them.
- 9:41And it's interesting that God comes to him in the form of a
- 9:46human, being appearing, to Abraham in a very natural way.
- 9:50A very natural way. And though it was very much, a
- 9:53supernatural event, it happened, very normally, and how often I
- 9:58think that God is trying to speak to us and appear Among Us
- 10:02and interact with us, but we miss him.
- 10:05We want something more. Dramatic.
- 10:07We want the Audible Voice speak to me from heaven and I'll know
- 10:11it's you, God, we're expecting the ground a rumble like Elijah
- 10:15did. But so often the Lord speaks to
- 10:17us in very normal ways. As our pastor, Pastor Chuck
- 10:20Smith once said, God off, Fan operates, supernaturally in very
- 10:26natural ways and in most of the time God speaking to you through
- 10:31his word. So you know if you're not
- 10:33reading the Bible then you're not going to hear from the Lord.
- 10:37You're missing a very easy opportunity just taking it in
- 10:41and allowing the Holy Spirit to speak to you in a very real way
- 10:44in his word. And I know every time I opened
- 10:47the Bible. I know he is speaking.
- 10:50I know that he is and and Me as well as the discipleship here.
- 10:55We train them in to carry their Bibles around.
- 10:58I know you can use your phone, I know you can, but the Bible
- 11:01represents something even at times, I'll use it.
- 11:04Like, this isn't just a decoration on the pulpit.
- 11:06This is my Bible. This is my Bible the one that
- 11:10I've used since I was a new believer.
- 11:12Actually. It's the second one I was
- 11:14looking not too long. I was just looking through and
- 11:16this was a gift from my mom back in 1995.
- 11:20Because the first Bible that I had like this was Destroyed.
- 11:23I mean, it was all tore up, it's in my office as a reminder of my
- 11:25mom saw it. And so I think I'm going to get
- 11:27you a new Bible son and I'm like great because we got no money.
- 11:31So please get us a Bible and moms and dads.
- 11:34You guys are a blessing that way so many times and I use it and I
- 11:38show you and I open it. And even today, this morning, I
- 11:42officiated a memorial and it's to me, it's very important that
- 11:48everyone in that room. See the authority that I stand
- 11:52in. Pulpit with it.
- 11:54You walk in differently when you have the authority but until
- 11:59it's an authority in your life you'll never treat the Bible
- 12:02that way. Hey I'm not opposed to, I do my
- 12:05DeVos on my iPad in the morning. I have that I have a diva book
- 12:09and some scripts, you know, my bible program, I use technology.
- 12:13I'm not opposed to technology at all.
- 12:15I think we should use the latest and greatest technology to reach
- 12:19every generation. I'm not opposed to it.
- 12:22However, there's something powerful about this book,
- 12:27there's something powerful about opening it up and using it and
- 12:32remembering this is the authority in your life.
- 12:35You guys know on the weekends, when we read a Psalm together,
- 12:38my I share open up your Bibles and let's stand.
- 12:43Let's stand in respect for God's word reminder that we stand on
- 12:47the authority of God's word and it's also a reminder Under that
- 12:51we stand under the authority of God's word and that you have a
- 12:55Bible and that you use it and that it becomes the tool in your
- 12:59life. You want to hear from God, read
- 13:01your Bible. That's tweetable.
- 13:04You guys should be You want to read from God?
- 13:08And then, of course, when I say tweetable, some people say, do
- 13:11people still use Twitter? Yes.
- 13:13Oh People Like Us still use Twitter.
- 13:17You want to hear from God. Open up your Bible.
- 13:19Stop complaining. You don't hear from God.
- 13:21Read your Bible and then of course I'm going to hear
- 13:23somebody but I do read my Bible. Well then maybe you need to
- 13:26examine yourself and see in a very natural way.
- 13:30God has been speaking all along and just do what he tells you to
- 13:33do. Pray over, read your Bible every
- 13:36day. And pray everyday and you'll see
- 13:39that God's operating all around you.
- 13:43It doesn't have to be some Supernatural Goosebumps I got
- 13:47chills that God is speaking to me.
- 13:49Now it's not always that I remember made me.
- 13:52Think I remember a few times over the years we get all kinds
- 13:55of feedback for the church and and and this is a familiar, this
- 13:59is actually a familiar one but I had one guy in particular that I
- 14:03remember he come up after a service, he was visiting and and
- 14:06he says, you know Pastor it's real quiet in here.
- 14:09You guys are on the verge of doing great things but it's so
- 14:13quiet. And I'm like, well what do you
- 14:15mean? And he said he was used to
- 14:17yelling screaming, you know, jumping up and down and all
- 14:21sorts of, you know, charismatic response in the church that he
- 14:24came from and he wasn't used to a quiet room where we are giving
- 14:30place to the Holy Spirit to speak to us through the teaching
- 14:34of his word. That's the primary, if you see
- 14:37and examine the life of Jesus. The primary Ministry of Jesus
- 14:42was not healing. It was not the kind of
- 14:46humanitarian things that God in human flesh.
- 14:49Did his primary Ministry was preaching and teaching that's
- 14:54where life change comes. And so the brother got, you
- 14:56know, it's really twice, it really really quiet.
- 14:59Well, another Sunday, somebody comes after service, pretty
- 15:01close to that because I put them together and they said, you
- 15:04know, it's too loud here too much, moving in the sanctuary,
- 15:08and I'm like, Like man why don't you just come to church with an
- 15:13attitude of listening to the Lord?
- 15:15Why is everything bother you? Why wide?
- 15:19And maybe this is a word for someone here.
- 15:21That doesn't. Maybe you're like I am that guy.
- 15:24All right. Maybe you are.
- 15:26And so just in a very real way, let me ask you.
- 15:29What's your problem? Listen to the Lord wherever you
- 15:33might be tune your ears to the Lord if it's too quiet for you,
- 15:38so be it, if it's too loud for you.
- 15:41So be it. If you are here by the will of
- 15:43God, he is ready to speak. He is ready to give you in a
- 15:48very natural way. The information, the knowledge,
- 15:52the wisdom that you're seeking from him very natural.
- 15:55Verse 6. Now, come To Genesis 18.
- 15:58So Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah and said, quickly
- 16:02Make Ready, three measures of fine meal, knead it and make
- 16:06cakes and Abraham, ran to the heard took a tender and good.
- 16:09Calf gave it to a young man and he hastened to prepare it.
- 16:13And so he took butter and milk and the calf which he had
- 16:16prepared and set it before them and he stood by them under the
- 16:20tree as they ate. It's interesting in the
- 16:24hospitality of the home both Sarah and Abraham were involved.
- 16:28It wasn't just delegated to Sarah, Abraham.
- 16:31Also was involved and he was also part of the service and the
- 16:34ministry to these visitors, it's important that you understand
- 16:39that it's togetherness in your marriage.
- 16:43It is not a man's job or a woman's job.
- 16:47It is the servant of the Lord's job to take care of those that
- 16:50are before you. So they both had a role.
- 16:51I like that verse 9, then they said to him where Sarah your
- 16:54wife and he said, here in the tent And he said, I will
- 16:57certainly return to you. According, to the time of life
- 17:00and behold, Sarah, your wife shall have a son and Sarah was
- 17:04listening in the tent door, which was behind him now,
- 17:07Abraham, and Sarah were old, well, advanced in age.
- 17:11Sarah had passed the age of childbearing.
- 17:14Therefore, Sarah laughed went in herself.
- 17:16Saying after I've grown old. Shall I have pleasure?
- 17:19My Lord being old also, And the Lord notice again, as you see in
- 17:26verse 13, you see the word Lord is in capital letters in a
- 17:30reference to Jehovah. So, this is where we learn here
- 17:34is one of these visitors is God in human flesh.
- 17:38And the Lord said Abraham, why did Sarah laugh saying, shall I
- 17:41surely bear a child? Since I'm old and Mark, this is
- 17:45anything too hard for the Lord, and at the appointed time, I
- 17:49will return to you according to the time of life and Sarah shall
- 17:52have a son, but Sarah denied. Saying I did not laugh for.
- 17:55She was afraid and he said no. But you did laughs.
- 17:59Can I just take a note? We won't develop it today, but
- 18:02it can. You just notice here?
- 18:03The fear of man can lead you to lie.
- 18:08I know that many of us. If we were asked, are you a
- 18:10liar? Most of us would say no.
- 18:13I'm a very honest person. And I'm certain that Sarah was a
- 18:16very honest person as well, but because of fear she lied.
- 18:23And that's one of the traps of the fear of men.
- 18:25You might be afraid to lose Integrity or, you know, loose
- 18:29face. So, you lie, you might be afraid
- 18:32to lose your job. So you lie, you might be afraid
- 18:36to lose the image that you've carefully crafted and so you
- 18:40lie, and I would just tell you, it's not good to lie.
- 18:44Tell the truth and be careful and watch out for fear to make
- 18:48you do things. You never wanted to do so, Sarah
- 18:51starts baking. He gets the main course.
- 18:54They put it all together, Abraham serving in the kitchen,
- 18:57Sarah serving in the kitchen, they're working together.
- 19:01Then the question comes, where is your wife and Sarah was
- 19:05listening in. It says, in verse 10, we learned
- 19:08that their far beyond the years of child bearing which caused
- 19:12Sarah to laugh here. She felt it was silly.
- 19:16And yet in verse 13, she's busted by the Lord.
- 19:20She's busted on it to which she denies of course.
- 19:24And to me that's incredible because I'm reminded that God
- 19:26knows my thoughts. That's one of the challenges
- 19:30that we have when were ministering to people as we
- 19:32don't know what's going on in your mind or your heart, nobody
- 19:36knows. Sometimes we don't even know our
- 19:38own hearts. However God knows, there's
- 19:43nothing hidden from him and there's no need to continue to
- 19:46live a life of pretense, he knows and I think to some
- 19:51degree, there's a lot about ourselves that we know, but then
- 19:54we believe lies about ourselves. And in believing lies.
- 19:59You may forget conveniently that you're a new creation in Christ.
- 20:03All things have been passed away, behold.
- 20:05All things have become new, that victory is yours by faith.
- 20:11And to me the Lord knows our thoughts and then can repeat
- 20:13them back to us in an instant and we need to be careful even
- 20:17as we're ministering to people. The way that hearts are
- 20:19revealed, the Bible says Jesus teaches us that out of the
- 20:23abundance of the mouth. The heart speaks or a bottom out
- 20:29of the abundance of the heart. The mouth speaks.
- 20:30Which one is it? It's a month.
- 20:32Which one or whatever one? It is.
- 20:33It open. Which one was it out of the
- 20:35abundance of the heart? The mouth speaks?
- 20:37Okay. So we won't edit that.
- 20:39We'll just see I miss quoted it. So I'll quote it correctly.
- 20:43Listen, if you can get someone talking eventually, they're
- 20:47going to show their heart. Which is why it's important to
- 20:51be a trustworthy person in Ministry.
- 20:55Which you could turn that word around and learn, it's important
- 20:57that you're worthy of someone's Trust. because the more someone
- 21:01trusts you the more their share with you, And we talked about
- 21:06this when somebody joins our team, we talk about
- 21:08confidentiality, we talk about the word confidence and then we
- 21:13talked about the person that we've all heard and I hear it on
- 21:16the news from time to time the con man, you know, a con man
- 21:20will seek to earn your confidence so that they could
- 21:24take advantage of you and take from you.
- 21:26And nobody in here needs to be, don't be if you are repent.
- 21:30If you're a con man this place the body of Christ, the family
- 21:34of God this church in particular.
- 21:36Any church for that matter is not a place for you to go and
- 21:40take advantage of people. And to earn their trust so that
- 21:44you can take from them, steal from them and hurt them
- 21:49financially, emotionally doesn't matter.
- 21:51We don't want to be a church filled with or allowing you know
- 21:55Jesus when you use the word con man he'd used the words.
- 21:58He'd used the phrase wolf in sheep's clothing.
- 22:02But on the flipside of that, while a con man will take your
- 22:05confidence and use it to hurt you.
- 22:08A servant of the Lord will take your confidence and use it to
- 22:11help you. That's a profound difference.
- 22:14And if you've ever been burned, or you've ever been hurt,
- 22:17because someone's taking advantage of you.
- 22:19Now, you understand why you feel so disconnected from people
- 22:22because you don't trust. And really the trust has to be
- 22:27unto the Lord I think of how many people come through this
- 22:30church and they you know we might be Hang on giving or
- 22:32something and and you know, we'll we'll talk about how
- 22:35pastors will take advantage of giving and, you know, Force
- 22:38things on you. There was a guy in town for a
- 22:40while that would make people stand and wave their tithe in
- 22:43the air so they could wave it. Like they were just wouldn't
- 22:46care and they make a big deal about it and they'd invite the
- 22:48big tithers up first and it was all just a sham to take
- 22:52advantage of people. He's just a big Thief is what he
- 22:55was. And anytime I share a story like
- 22:57that, that would be people listening to go, but I went to
- 22:59that church. And I gave that tithe and I did
- 23:03what I was told and now I was ripped off and you know what
- 23:08happens, is it you put a guard up you I will never be ripped
- 23:10off again. But I always careful to remind
- 23:14you. If that's you that when you gave
- 23:17yeah you may have done it wrong. You may have had wrong motives
- 23:19or anything, but you ultimately you gave to the Lord, he honors
- 23:24that and yeah he might have got burned because somebody missed
- 23:28used your trust and that's unfortunate.
- 23:30I wish it never happened but that is part of life.
- 23:33Jesus. He was crucified by very similar
- 23:36people 2,000 years ago. And so it doesn't mean now, you
- 23:40guard yourself and you protect yourself and you don't step into
- 23:44other people's lives anymore, or you don't give unto the Lord
- 23:47anymore, or whatever it may be. But God knows, and he wants us
- 23:52to build trust among one another.
- 23:55Now, notice this phrase, in verse 14, I have an underlying
- 24:00circled and highlighted in my Bible and just allow it to fill
- 24:04the room. Allow it to fill your cars are
- 24:06listening on the radio or, or where you are listening.
- 24:09On the app perhaps or watching online, just let it fill.
- 24:12Your heart is anything too hard for the Lord.
- 24:18This is an important question because there are many things in
- 24:22our lives even in my life right now.
- 24:25This is too hard for me. Too hard for me.
- 24:30Impossible for me. This is no way, I have no
- 24:34resources. I've nobility, I've no no power
- 24:37whatsoever and things, you know, even as I was reading, not even
- 24:41in my notes, flooding my mind right now I can think of a few
- 24:44things right away that are too hard for me.
- 24:48But is it too hard for the Lord? Is it too hard?
- 24:52Is is anything really too hard for God?
- 24:56And God is encouraging and now that there's nothing that comes
- 24:59into your life that he isn't big enough to handle.
- 25:03There isn't anything that comes into your life that even as it
- 25:06is too hard for you. And me to handle were told in
- 25:09the Bible that when we are weak. God becomes strong on our
- 25:12behalf. That the situation, you know,
- 25:16when everything's easy and there's no challenges, then, God
- 25:21doesn't show himself. Strong on your behalf.
- 25:23At least not demonstrative lie because there's really no need.
- 25:27It's when the need comes, when the impossibility knocks on the
- 25:31door, when the letter comes the phone, call the tax, the test
- 25:35results. That's when God has opportunity
- 25:38to show himself strong when we're out on a limb, when we've
- 25:42taken a step of faith and bladed.
- 25:44On the line for the Lord that's when.
- 25:46And so here, a beret, Sarah's laughing, it's impossible.
- 25:50This is silly. It doesn't.
- 25:51This stuff doesn't happen old man.
- 25:54And my old husband and me, we, this doesn't happen.
- 26:00And the answer was, is anything too hard for the Lord?
- 26:02There is an appointed time. and even Sarah denies it You know,
- 26:08Sarah is Mom. She was laughing like mockingly.
- 26:12It's like, oh, ho. That's never can happen.
- 26:16Who Do You Think You Are? And then she denies it.
- 26:20But I love the answer to again. This is so many things that we
- 26:24could stop and do Bible studies on alone, but I love the answer
- 26:28at the end of verse 15. No, but you did laughs, that
- 26:32happens to be a part of the ministry that God has called me
- 26:35to that. People don't like in my life,
- 26:37where I just like, no, this is what happened.
- 26:39This is what she said. This is what you did.
- 26:42And you need to come face to face with the reality of your
- 26:45current situation, or it will never change.
- 26:49I think I forget what, where I read this, somebody wrote it, I
- 26:53didn't make it up but I made it my own where he where he
- 26:56mentioned that a leader. One of the responsibilities of a
- 26:59leader is to Define reality for people.
- 27:02Oh my God. Sometimes people get so caught
- 27:05up in the situation. They don't understand the
- 27:06reality and until you understand the reality, you'll never be
- 27:10able to experience change. So Sarah look, nothing is
- 27:13impossible for God. I'm coming back at an appointed
- 27:16time. Don't you tell me?
- 27:18You didn't laugh? Did life.
- 27:21And I want you to remember this moment.
- 27:23Because it's going to play out when this kid does come in your
- 27:27life when I do fulfill, my promise notice in verse 16.
- 27:31Now then the men arose from there and look towards Sodom.
- 27:34Oh, topic is changing here. Abraham it with Anna.
- 27:38Send them on the way in the Lord said shall I hide from Abraham
- 27:41when I'm doing since Abraham, shall surely become a great and
- 27:45mighty nation and all the nations of the Earth shall be
- 27:48blessed in him for, I have known him in order that he may command
- 27:52his children. And his household after him that
- 27:55they keep the way of the Lord, to do, righteousness, and
- 27:57Justice. And that the Lord may bring
- 28:00Abraham, what he has spoken to him.
- 28:03And the Lord said, because the outcry against Sodom, and
- 28:05Gomorrah is great. And because their sin is very
- 28:08Grievous, I will go down now and see whether they have done
- 28:11altogether. According to the outcry against
- 28:14it, that has come to me. And if not, I will know.
- 28:17And then the men turned away from there and went towards
- 28:20Sodom but Abraham still stood before.
- 28:23For the Lord. So two angels walk away leaving
- 28:26Abraham alone with the Lord Abraham is growing in his fate.
- 28:31Don't forget he has a process of spiritual growth just like you
- 28:35do. He wasn't born as the man of
- 28:38Faith. He wasn't born, it needed to be
- 28:41developed in his life. And this is another moment of
- 28:44that development Abraham's growing and we find him about to
- 28:49grow and Leaps and Bounds in his prayer life.
- 28:52But notice the command was to teach his family righteousness.
- 28:57And that's your job moms and dads grandmas.
- 28:59And grandpas not only teaching righteousness, but by example,
- 29:03not merely Inward and a couple of things that I noticed here.
- 29:08First of all, that question in verse 17.
- 29:11Shall I hide from Abraham? What I'm doing?
- 29:14Number one, that tells me that we all have in our relationship
- 29:18with God. We all have partial knowledge.
- 29:22Don't forget that, we all have partial knowledge.
- 29:26Now I know the knowledge that we have seems to be everything that
- 29:30we need to know but we all have partial knowledge even though so
- 29:34much is revealed to us, we still don't know everything many
- 29:38times. We wonder what God is doing or
- 29:41not doing we think if I was God I would do this but God Alone
- 29:45knows all things. The doctrine of omniscience
- 29:50omnipotence, God knows all things.
- 29:52You and I, we know partial, we don't know all things.
- 29:57And then, the next thing we notice, It says in verse 22, the
- 30:02men turn away from there. Verse 23, Abraham came near.
- 30:06And said would you also destroy the righteous with the wicked
- 30:10Suppose? There were 50 righteous within
- 30:12the city. Would you also destroy the place
- 30:14and not spare for 50 righteous far be it from you to do such a
- 30:18thing as this to slay, the righteous with the wicked so
- 30:22that the righteous should not be as the wicked far.
- 30:25Be it from you or should shall be as the wicked shall not.
- 30:28The judge of all the Earth Do, Right?
- 30:32Another phrase to underline in your in your Bibles.
- 30:34Shall not the judge. Of all the Earth do, right?
- 30:38And the Lord said, if I find in Sodom 50 righteous within the
- 30:41city, then I'll spare the place for their sakes then, Abraham
- 30:44answered indeed. I am who but Dustin ashes and
- 30:47have taken upon myself to speak to the Lord.
- 30:50Suppose there were five less than 50.
- 30:52Would you destroy all the city for lack of five?
- 30:55And he said, if I find 45, I won't destroy it.
- 30:58Then he spoke to him yet again and said, Suppose there would be
- 31:0140 and he said I won't do it for the sake of 40 and then he said
- 31:05let the Lord not be angry. He and I will speak supposed 30
- 31:08should be found there and he said, I will not do it if there
- 31:10are 30 there and then he said, indeed, I've taken it upon
- 31:13myself to speak to the Lord supposed 20 should be found
- 31:17there and he said I won't destroy for the sake of 20 and
- 31:21he said Lord let not the Lord, be angry and I'll just speak one
- 31:26more time. Suppose 10 should be found there
- 31:30and he said I will not destroy it for the sake of ten.
- 31:32So the Lord, when his way as soon as he had finished speaking
- 31:35to Abraham and Abraham. And returned to his place.
- 31:39What we have here is a interesting perspective of
- 31:43Prayer by definition prayer, is someone talking to God, that's
- 31:49what prayer is. So we have an example of Abraham
- 31:52talking directly to with God and that is a good posture of
- 31:55prayer. You can come right into the
- 31:58throne room of Grace to find help.
- 31:59In time of need, you can talk to God in a very personal matter.
- 32:03We see this with Abraham and he's pleading and begging.
- 32:06Gagging and it reminds me. Secondly that they're Wicked
- 32:12really owe a lot to The Godly. I want you to let that sit in
- 32:17for a second the wicked truly owe a lot to those of you living
- 32:24a life in Christ. It is because of the presence of
- 32:28God's people that the world is not destroyed.
- 32:33There is a sense of Grace that comes through the pleadings of
- 32:38God's people in the life of unrighteous Laban.
- 32:41Remember later on, it was Jacob tending.
- 32:43The flocks that Laban was blessed and multiplied in the
- 32:47life of potiphar. It was because of Joseph that he
- 32:50was blessed and Acts chapter 27. We have an episode of Paul being
- 32:54on a ship and literally people were saved on that ship wreck
- 32:58because of Hall. In our country owes, so much to
- 33:04you, men and women who follow after God intercede greatly, I
- 33:10want you to notice here as well. That God is able to make a
- 33:12distinction between the righteous and the unrighteous.
- 33:15I know that's not a popular topic today, but there is a
- 33:18distinction between the righteous and the unrighteous.
- 33:22We may say with Christian language, the believer and the
- 33:25unbeliever God does marks in make no mistake about it.
- 33:30They're be our culture tries to erase it tries to sidestep it.
- 33:34Tries to change the whole language around it but not God.
- 33:39God is unchangeable It's not a politically correct thing to say
- 33:44of course, but the sin of Sodom is very serious.
- 33:49Homosexuality. Undermines The credibility of
- 33:56God's creation. It's actually a sin where you
- 33:59sin against yourself. Yes, it's true.
- 34:02Fornication is in the same category, adultery in the same
- 34:06category, but so is homosexuality.
- 34:12To God, the sin of homosexuality is gray, very grave.
- 34:17And it can lead to the loss of a soul, if unrepented and on a
- 34:22broader scale, according to verse 20.
- 34:26God says, because of the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is
- 34:29great. And because their sin is very
- 34:31Grievous, we also learn in this text that nothing is missed by
- 34:35God. Sin has an outcry to it, it has
- 34:39consequences it, crushes, and destroys men and women.
- 34:46I think of what's being perpetrated on the children
- 34:48today. I think of the surgeries that
- 34:52are being that are being allowed and encouraged that are
- 34:56Reversible, that's our culture and it's one thing to be angry
- 35:01and it's one thing to have an outcry, but have you been
- 35:04pleading with God? Like Abraham was.
- 35:10And I don't know for sure, we don't know.
- 35:14But as you see Abraham go from number two number, I wonder if
- 35:20in his mind he was thinking of 10 people and lots family.
- 35:25Because we know later on and we'll study a little bit more
- 35:27about lot, but we know later on that, the Bible says that lot
- 35:31was a righteous man and he was vexed in his soul daily.
- 35:36Here's a man struggling and battling and yet at the same
- 35:39time, God declares him righteous vexed in his soul.
- 35:42The Old King James says As Abraham intercedes.
- 35:46He asked the question he says, would you also destroy the
- 35:52righteous with the wicked again for you Bible students?
- 35:55This is a principle of the character of God that helps to
- 35:59me in one thing and there's many reasons why.
- 36:02But this alone this principle of the character of God really to
- 36:07me affirms, the New Testament, New Testament, doctrine of the
- 36:11pre-tribulation Rapture of the church.
- 36:13God is able to make a distinction and those that are
- 36:17righteous will not suffer the same judgment.
- 36:20Wrath than those that are unrighteous, just from this
- 36:23principle alone, he says in verse 25, now won't the judge of
- 36:27all the Earth do, right? Of course you'll do, right?
- 36:31And clearly in the back of Abraham's, mine is poor law at
- 36:33the backslider. The compromiser, his blessed,
- 36:37nephew, his family. We kind of look, we put people
- 36:40in categories, you know, lot made a lot of bad decisions, but
- 36:43he was someone's son. Someone's brother.
- 36:46Someone's husband. Someone's dad, someone's nephew
- 36:49Even as you have loved for your family. and as we close just
- 36:55real quickly again, I don't have time to develop it, but some
- 36:58notable things in the prayer life of Abraham that may be
- 37:01helpful for you and your own prayer life, as you're praying
- 37:04for your country, as you praying, for your politicians,
- 37:07gree or disagree with them, as you're praying for your family,
- 37:10as your pleading, for God's mercy, that's what Abraham was
- 37:15pleading for God's mercy, I mean if there's just 10 people there
- 37:19we you not destroy the city. Is there just 10 people there?
- 37:23So, three things real quick. Number one, his prayer was very
- 37:26specific and it's good in your prayers to be specific often
- 37:32when praying when my kids were younger.
- 37:34They would pray to save our family and save the world and we
- 37:39really wanted to walk into their lives and teach them that those
- 37:42are wonderful prayers to save our family and save the world.
- 37:45But As they grew older, they started naming names.
- 37:50And as they named names, they started paying attention to
- 37:52those names and I'm certain to this day and names are still
- 37:55mentioned in our prayers of family and friends like your
- 37:59boss. You know, it's impersonal to say
- 38:02I pray for the Salvation of my boss and he's like But you know,
- 38:08when you say, you know, would you, would you please touch the
- 38:11life of Chuck? God, you know, you put him in a
- 38:15position of authority over me. But I know he's just a man, it
- 38:19changes the whole perspective praying for your boss or praying
- 38:22for her or him by name. Specific number to his prayer
- 38:27was also respectful Respectful based on his relationship with
- 38:32God, up to this point, Abraham respected, the power, and the
- 38:35sovereignty of God, you see that in verse 25 shall not.
- 38:39The judge of the earth do, right?
- 38:40You see that in verse 30? Let the Lord.
- 38:43Not be angry. He's respectful.
- 38:45Don't be angry with me. But I keep working these numbers
- 38:48with you God because I love my nephew.
- 38:52I loved his family. He was respectful.
- 38:54And finally his prayer was hopeful or you could also say it
- 38:59had and the right expectation, he prayed with expectation.
- 39:06You could say that Abraham prayed in faith and by faith, he
- 39:10was leaning on the character and the nature of God and was
- 39:14hopeful in his request. So it says in verse 33 that the
- 39:18Lord went his way. He finished speaking and Doom.
- 39:22Now, in our next study of visit to Sodom would take place and
- 39:27we'll learn a little bit about Sodom and Gomorrah next time.
- 39:31Father, we pray for your spirit to take the lessons that we
- 39:34learn. And I think you know I know
- 39:36reviewing my notes and thinking this through I will sometimes
- 39:40impose my own limitations on you and what's impossible for me I
- 39:46just think is impossible for you.
- 39:49I also got find a failure and ask you to forgive me of that,
- 39:52failure of not being satisfied with the answer that you've
- 39:55given me. That you have answered.
- 40:01And it wasn't the way I requested.
- 40:04And so Lord, I pray that you would teach me and teach us
- 40:06contentment and Trust. Trusting you, with our lives and
- 40:11the situations in our lives. And forgive us, Lord for being
- 40:17so impersonal. So upset with the current
- 40:21conditions of unrighteous men and women.
- 40:26And let us be reminded that the wicked have a lot.
- 40:30They owe a lot to the righteous. And may we continue to ramp up
- 40:36what is owed by our prayers and our intercessions for them.
- 40:40We pray that in Jesus name. Amen.
- 40:44We pray that you've been encouraged by this Bible.
