Latest / Journey to the Fringe / Fringey Mini: Whats the street outside of Nicholas Cage's house in Malibu up to?

- 0:00Right. My, my mini. So. It's your mini. Chelsea.
- 0:05Yeah. I found a emotions edition that I am quite
- 0:10excited about because, you know, I'm just going
- 0:14to read the title. This comes from the LA Times.
- 0:18It is written by Fedora Zarkin. Okay. This sounds
- 0:23promising. It is written on? Where's the date?
- 0:26Why is it when you have the MSNBC, like, versions
- 0:29of things, they don't give you the date? Anyhow,
- 0:31doesn't matter. Oh, September 11th, 2026, article
- 0:35title, At the Nicolas Cage Sinkhole in Malibu,
- 0:38El Nino Fears Alter the Good Vibes Mood. I thought
- 0:42this was a satire. Is it real? You would think.
- 0:45Oh, it's very real. I didn't even read the article
- 0:48because I saw it circulating and I was like,
- 0:50sure, this is satire. It is not. And I realized,
- 0:54like, I saw that and I was like, this is ridiculous.
- 0:56And I was like, wait, technically this probably
- 0:58falls into rich people's emotions. You're right.
- 1:01And looking further into it, I thought I haven't
- 1:05even looked at it. So I'm intrigued now that,
- 1:07because no, that does make sense now that you
- 1:10say it that way. Let's listen to the main. Especially,
- 1:14Chelsea, I'm going to show you a photo of this
- 1:16house at the very end. You'll realize, oh yes,
- 1:18this is definitely a rich people's emotions one.
- 1:22And how did this not happen sooner? Okay, I'm
- 1:26excited. So, as the waves bashed the coast this
- 1:29week, boulders smashed into the piles of Mitchell
- 1:32Lib's Malibu home, plucking them like a guitar
- 1:35string and shaking his house. That, along with
- 1:38the news of a massive sinkhole opening up about
- 1:41seven miles away, has the man worried about the
- 1:43house he's lived in for ten years. Standing outside
- 1:46a shopping center in Malibu on Thursday afternoon,
- 1:48Lib, 67, checked a tide chart to see when the
- 1:53water would be low enough for him to even be
- 1:55able to see the damage to his house. After days
- 1:58of high tides and the remnants of Hurricane Marie
- 2:00battering his home, Lib said that his wife has
- 2:03asked if they can sell the house and move elsewhere.
- 2:06He's not entirely opposed. Quote, We're looking
- 2:09to have peace and quiet in our lives, not fear.
- 2:13End quote, Lib said. Fear is exactly what was
- 2:16struck in some Malibu residents since early Tuesday
- 2:19when the sinkhole opened up in front of a beachside
- 2:22property owned by actor Nicolas Cage. By the
- 2:25day's end, the hole was about 25 feet deep and
- 2:2730 by 60 feet wide. Most residents on the street
- 2:31have been ordered to evacuate with seven homes
- 2:34red -tagged due to hazardous conditions and an
- 2:37additional 24 red -tagged because emergency vehicles
- 2:40wouldn't be able to access them in an emergency.
- 2:43city officials have said not everybody appears
- 2:46to be quite as worried as lib or at least not
- 2:48everybody's showing it former malibu mayor andy
- 2:52stern's house was one of those ordered to evacuate
- 2:54because emergency vehicles can't access it stern
- 2:58who is a real estate agent said he thinks the
- 3:01sinkhole down the street was a one -off incident
- 3:03caused by a combination of a burst water pipe
- 3:06and the waves and not something that is necessarily
- 3:08a harbinger of unsolved problems to come The
- 3:12city of Malibu said the sinkhole was, quote,
- 3:14caused by coastal erosion from high waves and
- 3:17tides associated with Hurricane Marie, end quote.
- 3:20Adding that the city is, quote, preparing for
- 3:22potential strong storms, high surf, heavy rain,
- 3:25mudslides, and coastal erosion with this winter
- 3:27associated with forecast El Nino conditions,
- 3:31end quote. The Malibu residents who live near
- 3:33the beach but up on higher ground are concerned
- 3:36for their neighbors and for the coastline as
- 3:38a whole. Joe Geis, was in her home on the phone
- 3:42with her insurance company for an unrelated reason
- 3:44Thursday when she thought it wouldn't hurt to
- 3:47ask whether her policy covered a sinkhole swallowing
- 3:49her home. Not that guys thought there was much
- 3:52of a chance. She and her husband live in a house
- 3:55on a cliff above the ocean. Still, she couldn't
- 3:58help but wonder, given those ordered to evacuate
- 4:00included two of her friends. She's feeling pretty
- 4:03good about herself. Yep. Guys said... She has
- 4:09been monitoring the work contractors have been
- 4:12doing. Why didn't she give us the answer? Oh,
- 4:14she doesn't? No, apparently not, because there's
- 4:17not that much left. Why the fuck wouldn't she
- 4:17give us the answer? She saw a long line of concrete
- 4:20trucks headed that way a few days ago, and a
- 4:23contractor told her the concrete was to fill
- 4:25in the hole. When she went to see the hole for
- 4:27herself, it appeared unchanged, and the contractor
- 4:30told her that the concrete had been washed out
- 4:32to sea. What the fuck's up with this lady's story?
- 4:35Malibu City Manager Joseph Irvin. Previously
- 4:39said construction and repairs would take about
- 4:41four weeks. Lib hasn't decided yet what all of
- 4:44this means for the future. Quote, is this just
- 4:46a one -time event or what we could call normal?
- 4:50End quote, he said. Quote, or is this really
- 4:52a reflection of a greater problem? End quote.
- 4:55Also, end of article. And Chelsea, I just need
- 4:57to share my screen for a second so that you can
- 4:59see like what we're talking about here because...
- 5:02I can't exactly wrap my head around. What exactly
- 5:06this article was. When I saw this photo, this
- 5:09is like, oh yeah, this is rich people emotions
- 5:11right here. Okay, I'm waiting. Wow, they are
- 5:14right in the ocean. And you can see the sinkhole
- 5:17right there. Oh, yep, there it is. The houses
- 5:20are literally in the ocean. Like, they get hit
- 5:22by waves before the beach in this photo. I mean,
- 5:27if I was a rich person... And I didn't think
- 5:31the ocean was going to rise due to climate change
- 5:34because I thought it was a joke. I think I would
- 5:38like that. It would be picturesque living, yeah.
- 5:41Yeah. But also, like, you're too close to the
- 5:43beach to even use the beach. No, you definitely...
- 5:46Like, you're over top of the beach. I wouldn't
- 5:51consider that beach access unless it was like
- 5:55considered diving. They have a diving board off
- 5:57the dock or the patio. See, it's between that
- 6:01and, you know, up in the hills where you can
- 6:04still see the beach, I think might be a better
- 6:07view. Still, I know I brought that up on a previous
- 6:10mini. I still think that's a better view. Back
- 6:13in the hills, overlooking. Yeah, the question
- 6:16is, do you want to see the ocean or do you want
- 6:18to be in the ocean? And I do agree. I think I
- 6:21just want to see the ocean. I think I would just...
- 6:23It's such a better view still, I think, because
- 6:26you're seeing more than just open ocean. You're
- 6:29seeing... Yeah, and I guess the difference...
- 6:30I live near a lake. You know, the difference
- 6:32between lake living and ocean living is there's
- 6:34another side to the lake, and it's beautiful.
- 6:37Yeah. On the ocean, there's not another side
- 6:39to the ocean that you're going to see anytime
- 6:41soon. Yeah. So, like, even where you are, like,
- 6:44the view... From Lakeview versus up in the mountains
- 6:48is a very different view. I prefer the mountains.
- 6:50You're going to see a lot better. Personally,
- 6:52this is me as a non -rich person having rich
- 6:57people emotion. So maybe don't trust me. You
- 7:01don't understand that you're going to have somebody
- 7:03else pay for the damage that's going to be done
- 7:05to your house. And that's the real rush that
- 7:10the rich people want, I assume. Well, here's
- 7:12what I'm thinking. buy a house and probably I
- 7:16have mental illness when I buy that house. To
- 7:21be fair, being rich is a mental illness. I think
- 7:23we can agree on that. That's at least the podcast
- 7:25official position. Nicholas Cage, eh? And I gotta
- 7:30love that they did not get a quote from Nicholas
- 7:33Cage on this. I love that as well. It really
- 7:36had nothing to do with him other than it was
- 7:38his house that has a sinkhole. Yeah. And you'd
- 7:42really think that that would mean, like, they
- 7:43even said, like, Nick Cage was reached out to
- 7:46and did not comment. No. But no. It doesn't feel
- 7:49like they even... We had to talk to the guy seven
- 7:50miles away. Yeah. Who is now a little worried.
- 7:54Who asked their policy if they recovered, but
- 7:55we don't know. Yeah. We don't know for sure.
- 7:59I would have liked that for me. And then people
- 8:01aren't worried because it just had to do with
- 8:03waves. Yep. Good people of Malibu. Smart enough
- 8:08to separate from the city of Los Angeles because
- 8:11they didn't want to pay taxes for other people.
- 8:13Now reaping what they sowed. So it's a feel -good
- 8:16story, it sounds like. Bit of a feel -good, but
- 8:18we'll see. Because, again, rich people's emotions.
- 8:21And that doesn't stop the state of California
- 8:23from making them whole. Plus, it does sound like
- 8:27there's upper emotion Malibu and lower. Yes.
- 8:32It depends where on the cliffs you are. Yes,
- 8:35exactly. And it feels like the upper people may
- 8:37be feeling quite, what's the word, cocky about
- 8:42themselves currently. I hope that bites them
- 8:45in the ass. Did you take that as a gloat when
- 8:46she asked the insurance company if they'd be
- 8:48covered for a sinkhole and they were up on a
- 8:50cliff, like up on a mountain? No, but she did
- 8:52seem to really like... gloat about the fact that
- 8:56my friends are losing their house should i worry
- 8:59about this yeah no i got from it that she was
- 9:02like i'll ask but i don't feel like it'll ever
- 9:05happen to me because i am much higher up as if
- 9:09it's a higher status to be on a higher cliff
- 9:12rather than right in the ocean that's what i
- 9:15took okay that's how i heard it okay maybe it
- 9:20was the way you read it okay And hey, you guys
- 9:26got 48 hours. Would you live oceanfront or up
- 9:29in the hills if you were rich? And importantly,
- 9:31would you like snobbingly call your insurance
- 9:34company and rub it in your rich friends on the
- 9:37oceanfront's face if you were up in the hills?
- 9:40Even though they would have no way of knowing
- 9:42what you had said. Yeah. You guys got time to
- 9:45figure it out. Bye. Yeah. 48 at least. Bye.
