- 0:31Speaker 1: There's always just a lot going on with these and
- 0:34Speaker 1: that they're sometimes a tough tough to follow everything. The
- 0:38Speaker 1: Saints head coaching Tracker, the full tracker is up at
- 0:42Speaker 1: Louisiana sports on net, so it's we're keeping a running
- 0:44Speaker 1: tracker of every report that's out there.
- 0:47Speaker 2: So if you want everything sort.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Of consolidated in one space, go to Louisiana Sports on
- 0:52Speaker 1: net Saints Coaching Tracker and you'll see it right there.
- 0:55Speaker 1: It's just it's everything that's been reported chronologically. There's reports,
- 0:59Speaker 1: there's conformation, and then there's rumors, so it's all there
- 1:04Speaker 1: one that there's a couple on Wednesday that were reported
- 1:10Speaker 1: that were really interesting early Wednesday.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Actually believe it was late Tuesday.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Davis Webb, who's the offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos,
- 1:18Speaker 1: is one that was reported that the Saints would have
- 1:19Speaker 1: interested in speaking with. That was later refuted by Nick Underhill,
- 1:23Speaker 1: and then Josina Anderson tweeted that she was told at
- 1:27Speaker 1: least four teams have expressed interest in talking with Cliff
- 1:31Speaker 1: Kingsbury about their head coaching vacancy, and among those four
- 1:35Speaker 1: that she listed were the New Orleans Saints. Now, that
- 1:40Speaker 1: was another one that has now been refuted to suggest
- 1:43Speaker 1: that the Saints aren't one of the four.
- 1:45Speaker 2: But what do you This is where it's hard to tell.
- 1:54Speaker 2: What do you believe? Who do you believe?
- 1:57Speaker 1: It's I always say, believe nothing, consider everything. Dosina Anderson's
- 2:01Speaker 1: report is that she said, I'm told the Saints and
- 2:04Speaker 1: Bears are the two teams that have officially requested interviews
- 2:09Speaker 1: with commander's OC Cliff Kingsbury.
- 2:13Speaker 2: I'll go with that as legitimate.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Josina Anderson is a very reputable NFL reporter, and she's
- 2:19Speaker 1: citing sources saying that the Bears and the Saints are
- 2:21Speaker 1: the two that have officially requested an interview with Kingsbury.
- 2:24Speaker 1: I'm gonna come back to Kingsbury because i do think
- 2:26Speaker 1: that of the ones I'm about to discuss is the
- 2:28Speaker 1: most significant, most interesting. But the Saints have announced they
- 2:32Speaker 1: have conducted their interview with Dolphins d c Anthony Weaver.
- 2:37Speaker 1: There is a report from ESPN's Jeremy Foulder that the
- 2:39Speaker 1: Saints will interview Mike Kafka, the offensive coordinator for the
- 2:43Speaker 1: New York Giants. And then, as we mentioned, there was
- 2:45Speaker 1: the Davis Webb report, which has since been refuted.
- 2:48Speaker 2: But again, what do we really know? What do we believe?
- 2:51Speaker 1: At this point, I think the Cliff Kingsbury report is
- 2:56Speaker 1: the most interesting. So my contention in talking about this,
- 3:01Speaker 1: this Saints' coaching search is that I want a young,
- 3:05Speaker 1: offensive minded head coach, preferably from the Shanahan McVeigh tree.
- 3:10Speaker 1: The NFL is a copycat league. That's the direction the
- 3:14Speaker 1: league is going, and there's a lot of coaches that
- 3:16Speaker 1: have had success from Shanahan and San Francisco McVeigh with
- 3:21Speaker 1: the Rams, Kevin O'Connell with the Vikings, especially guys that
- 3:25Speaker 1: have a great knowledge of how to develop the quarterback position.
- 3:29Speaker 2: I think that is imperative.
- 3:31Speaker 1: You gotta have a great quarterback and great quarterback production
- 3:33Speaker 1: in the NFL to be great in twenty twenty, in
- 3:36Speaker 1: twenty twenty five and beyond. So you get someone who
- 3:39Speaker 1: is great at that, then you're never beholden to one guy.
- 3:42Speaker 1: For example, we could certainly look at the Lions, who
- 3:45Speaker 1: are awesome this year. They're the one seed in the NFC.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Ben Johnson's been great, Dan Campbell's been a great culture guy,
- 3:50Speaker 1: and they've certainly maximized Jared Goff. What if Ben Johnson leaves,
- 3:55Speaker 1: what happens there? I mean, is it fair to say, like,
- 3:59Speaker 1: look at what Matt Ryan was with Kyle Shanahan when
- 4:04Speaker 1: he was an MVP and had the Falcons in the
- 4:06Speaker 1: Super Bowl with a twenty eight to three lead that
- 4:08Speaker 1: they blew, and then look what Matt Ryan was like
- 4:11Speaker 1: after Shanahan.
- 4:13Speaker 2: There are examples of that all over.
- 4:16Speaker 1: So I think that's something that will be an interesting
- 4:19Speaker 1: test case if and or when Ben Johnson leaves Detroit.
- 4:22Speaker 1: You don't have that question if your head coach is
- 4:24Speaker 1: the guy who's calling the offensive developing the quarterback, which
- 4:27Speaker 1: is why that's appealing to me. Now I have said
- 4:31Speaker 1: I don't want to retread, and Kingsbury has been a
- 4:35Speaker 1: head coach before. However, it feels like it's a bit
- 4:38Speaker 1: of an asterisk because he's still a young coach and
- 4:41Speaker 1: he is still at least the offensive minded young coach.
- 4:47Speaker 1: And the other thing too, is while I think a
- 4:50Speaker 1: lot of us have our opinions made of Cliff Kingsbury,
- 4:56Speaker 1: they were made because of his time in college, not
- 5:00Speaker 1: his time in the NFL. Cliff Kingsbury in the NFL
- 5:05Speaker 1: was excuse me, Cliff Kingsbury as a college head coach
- 5:09Speaker 1: had a very low ceiling at Texas Tech because in Lubbock,
- 5:13Speaker 1: pre nil, you were never gonna have a roster good
- 5:17Speaker 1: enough to compete at the highest level. I mean, Mike
- 5:20Speaker 1: Leach was an amazing coach. That one year with Michael Crabtree,
- 5:25Speaker 1: and that really special season had Texas Tech knock it
- 5:29Speaker 1: on the door. But largely what you had was a
- 5:33Speaker 1: lot of six and seven lost seasons. He went eight
- 5:36Speaker 1: and five, four and eight, seven and six, five and seven,
- 5:38Speaker 1: six and seven, five and seven. He was thirty five
- 5:40Speaker 1: and forty overall during his time in Lubbock and quite Honestly,
- 5:44Speaker 1: he probably cared more about his social life than he
- 5:48Speaker 1: did about recruiting seventeen and eighteen year old kids to
- 5:50Speaker 1: come play football. For him, the NFL is a completely
- 5:52Speaker 1: different world. He gets the Arizona job, and I think
- 5:57Speaker 1: we look at it and we go man, he got
- 5:58Speaker 1: fired in Arizona.
- 5:59Speaker 2: He didn't work as an FF coach. Not exactly.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Cliff Kingsbury actually did well in Arizona. Year one they
- 6:08Speaker 1: were five ten and one headed a bad situation.
- 6:10Speaker 2: It wasn't great. Year two they go eight to eight.
- 6:14Speaker 1: He went from five to ten and one to eight
- 6:16Speaker 1: and eight to eleven and six, and they went to
- 6:20Speaker 1: the playoffs. They lost the rams of the wildcard round.
- 6:24Speaker 1: And yes, they struggled late in that season, and then
- 6:29Speaker 1: in twenty twenty two they went four and thirteen and
- 6:31Speaker 1: he got fired. You'd say, well, look they slumped at
- 6:33Speaker 1: the end of twenty one and then they were terrible
- 6:34Speaker 1: in twenty two. That's true, But Kyler Murray also towards
- 6:36Speaker 1: ACL and I don't care what franchise you are, you
- 6:43Speaker 1: lose your starting quarterback, it's probably not going to go great. Yes,
- 6:47Speaker 1: their exception Sam Darnold this year, but what do we
- 6:49Speaker 1: really expect from a rookie and JJ McCarthy. I could
- 6:51Speaker 1: think back to two thousand and eight the New England
- 6:54Speaker 1: Patriots when Brady got hurt, Matt Castle led him to
- 6:58Speaker 1: an eleven win season, Greatest franchise in the history of
- 7:02Speaker 1: the NFL, greatest dynasty in the history of the NFL.
- 7:04Speaker 1: The point is, I think Cliff Kingsbury is a pretty
- 7:08Speaker 1: good coach. He's a really good offensive coach, and he
- 7:12Speaker 1: gets a lot of credit for what he's done this
- 7:14Speaker 1: year with rookie Jaden Daniels. So could I see a
- 7:19Speaker 1: world where the Saints higher Cliff Kingsbury and you pair
- 7:24Speaker 1: Cliff Kingsbury with Spencer Ratler to see if he can
- 7:26Speaker 1: maximize a young quarterback with that dual threat skill set,
- 7:31Speaker 1: the big arm, the mobility, build an offense around him. Yeah,
- 7:37Speaker 1: I could, And to be very frank, I would like
- 7:40Speaker 1: to see what the Saints offense would look like with
- 7:44Speaker 1: Spencer Ratler behind a healthy offensive line, with your full
- 7:48Speaker 1: compliment of receivers in Taysom Hill and Alvin Kamara and
- 7:51Speaker 1: the whole works. We didn't get a fair judge of
- 7:54Speaker 1: what Spencer Ratler could be because he was playing with
- 7:56Speaker 1: a preseason roster. I'm not in worse thing. Cliff Kingsbury
- 8:01Speaker 1: is like my top candidate. I'm just saying, if they're
- 8:04Speaker 1: serious and this is a direction they go, I wouldn't
- 8:07Speaker 1: hate it because he is a good offensive coach in
- 8:11Speaker 1: the NFL. He is a good quarterback coach. He's got
- 8:14Speaker 1: the record to prove that. Can he be a high level,
- 8:19Speaker 1: playoff caliber culture guy in the NFL. I don't know that.
- 8:23Speaker 1: I don't know that we have enough sample of that.
- 8:26Speaker 1: But he is a much better NFL fit than he
- 8:29Speaker 1: was a college fit at Texas Tech, where the ceiling
- 8:32Speaker 1: was going to be low no matter who was coaching
- 8:33Speaker 1: that team.
- 8:36Speaker 2: I get him.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Man, there's gonna be a lot of people look at
- 8:38Speaker 1: Cliff and you see the beach pictures with his shirt
- 8:40Speaker 1: off with the co Eds and all that stuff, and
- 8:41Speaker 1: I get it. And you can ask, legitimately, is that
- 8:44Speaker 1: the culture that you want to welcome into your organization
- 8:47Speaker 1: as your head coach? And we can legitimately have that conversation.
- 8:51Speaker 1: But if we're having a football conversation about offensive football
- 8:55Speaker 1: in twenty twenty five in the NFL, you could do
- 8:57Speaker 1: much worse in Cliff Kingsbury
