- 0:00SPEAKER_03: What's up everybody?
- 0:01SPEAKER_03: Welcome to the Comedy Podcast, where Comedy Meets Your Slash My Commute.
- 0:05SPEAKER_03: This is episode 15.5.
- 0:07SPEAKER_03: I am your host, Dave Thompson, and I'm here with somebody.
- 0:11SPEAKER_03: How do I describe this guy?
- 0:13SPEAKER_03: Rough around the edges, some might say.
- 0:17SPEAKER_03: Some might say this really funny.
- 0:22SPEAKER_03: Some might say this guy not only has a future in comedy, but he will be.
- 0:32SPEAKER_03: What's the right word for him?
- 0:35SPEAKER_03: Hold on.
- 0:35SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna get there.
- 0:36SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna get there.
- 0:38SPEAKER_03: What's the right word?
- 0:44SPEAKER_03: Okay, I can't think of the right word.
- 0:46SPEAKER_03: Everybody, Ed Selwyn.
- 0:47SPEAKER_03: Ed Selwyn, everybody.
- 0:48SPEAKER_03: Ed, how are we doing, dude?
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: What's up, Dave?
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: How are you, man?
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: Thank you for that uh glowing introduction.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: I appreciate that.
- 0:54SPEAKER_03: Glowing! Glowing, that's the right word.
- 0:58SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 0:59SPEAKER_03: He has a place in our community and he's also glowing.
- 1:02SPEAKER_03: That's what I'm talking about.
- 1:04SPEAKER_03: And for those that don't know you, because I we met what, like six months ago?
- 1:11SPEAKER_03: Seven months ago now?
- 1:13unknown: Yeah.
- 1:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:14SPEAKER_03: Or like seven months ago?
- 1:16SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 1:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:17SPEAKER_03: And when I first met you, I thought you were just a giant.
- 1:22SPEAKER_03: You know what I'm saying?
- 1:24SPEAKER_03: Because you're a big dude.
- 1:26SPEAKER_03: I thought you were just a freaking giant.
- 1:28SPEAKER_03: And I thought you were like, you look like you look like Usher's bodyguard.
- 1:33SPEAKER_03: Like you could just beat those women off of him that are trying to get their, you know, the eating the cherries.
- 1:38SPEAKER_03: You know what I'm saying?
- 1:41SPEAKER_03: And then I figured out later that you were that you're ex-law enforcement.
- 1:47SPEAKER_03: And so I wasn't very far off.
- 1:49SPEAKER_03: You know what I'm saying?
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, as uh as an ex-law enforcement officer, yes, I've done my fair share of beating women.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Let's make it go! We love that.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: We love that.
- 2:02SPEAKER_03: You uh nobody's getting canceled today because you know what?
- 2:08SPEAKER_03: Back in the old days, they used to stone women, so you better relax.
- 2:11SPEAKER_03: Uh, okay, cool.
- 2:13SPEAKER_03: So, Ed, Ed, avid listener of the podcast, so thank you so much for that.
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: Thank you for your service.
- 2:19SPEAKER_03: Thank you for being funny.
- 2:20SPEAKER_03: Thank you for being a part of the community.
- 2:22SPEAKER_03: For those of you that don't know, Ed is a door guy and has been uh at Above the Iron, and he has since moved down towards uh the San Diego area.
- 2:33SPEAKER_03: Um, but he's been around the like Nrieta Temecula scene.
- 2:36SPEAKER_03: Now he does a lot of stuff in San Diego with uh going to different mics and doing stuff.
- 2:42SPEAKER_03: So, Ed, let me ask you, what in your opinion do you think is the difference between doing comedy in the like Menaphy, Mirietta, Temecula area and doing it down in San Diego?
- 2:55SPEAKER_03: What's the biggest difference to you?
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: Uh you know, to be honest, it's it's uh it is different.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: There are differences.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: Um the crowds are different, the rooms are different, uh, the comics are different.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: Um not to say one's better than the other, they're just different.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: Uh it's like it's like comparing riding a 10-speed Schwin bicycle to riding a one-speed BMX bicycle.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: They're both bicycles, they're just uh different shapes, sizes, colors, nationalities, and income levels.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 3:40SPEAKER_03: Income levels for sure.
- 3:43SPEAKER_03: You know, I'm always amazed when I go down to San Diego that people are wearing cologne and open mics.
- 3:49SPEAKER_03: And I think that I knew that that was a huge difference because when you when you when you pull up and guys got on jewelry and and they have nicknames for themselves, and they're wearing silk button-ups with with cologne on and an open mic, I'm like, you we're not the same.
- 4:07SPEAKER_03: Because I'm used to pulling up and people are sweating because they have no AC in their car, maybe they live in their car, and they're gonna come talk about how they sell their booties for freaking gas money, and there's just a huge difference in the two areas, in my opinion, in that way for sure.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I we just I just left a mic uh 20 minutes ago, and uh you should have seen the amount of uh uh Gucci shirts and you know designer belts and boat shoes that were in this room.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: Uh it it's it can be shocking.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: It can be shocking.
- 4:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because up here in the IE, we don't have Gucci, we have Poochie.
- 4:54SPEAKER_03: You know what I'm saying?
- 4:56SPEAKER_03: Um I don't know why I thought that was gonna be so funny.
- 5:00SPEAKER_03: Poochie! Um okay, so as far as since you moved down in the area, what do you think is the best room?
- 5:11SPEAKER_03: If somebody asks you, they said, Ed, I'm gonna come down towards San Diego.
- 5:16SPEAKER_03: What is the best room that I can do and get up at at an open mic?
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: Um like it just there's so many variables to that question.
- 5:28SPEAKER_03: You can't, I can't identify like the Well, let's let's say this then what's what's your favorite room to get up at down there?
- 5:38SPEAKER_03: The one where you feel comfortable, the one where you feel good ranking?
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: There's a couple rooms.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: Um Jazzy Wishbone, uh Everloving Comedy.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: Shout out Kyle Dean.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: Shout out Kyle Dean on Thursday nights.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: Um he does a showcase show, and then he does an open mic after.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: Now, Jazzy is for all intents and purposes, it's a jazz club.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: But they allowed Kyle to do comedy in the back room, kind of like in the back garage area on Thursday nights.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: And dude, overall, like there have been rooms that wanted to like chase me out to my car to get me off stage, but then there's also been crowds there that have been so loving and accepting of a big ugly ogre like me and left me left me feeling like a total rock star.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: Um Oceanside is is is a good vibe because it's a good mix of people.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: It's not like you know, some of the bougier areas in San Diego.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: Um there's a good mix of people.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: There's some hardworking blue-collar people, there's some well-to-do, you know, second generation, uh, you know, richer people.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: And then you've got your old like barren, you know, railroad barren money.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: Uh it's a good mix.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: I like Jazzy Wishbone, I like Kilowatt, uh, I like Booze Brothers, because you know, those those type of people, the the blue-collar, hardworking, regular American people, I feel like that's my crowd.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: So that's what I gravitate to.
- 7:16SPEAKER_03: You know what?
- 7:17SPEAKER_03: And I'll be honest with you, I feel like if you did comedy in the Midwest were in Texas, brother, I feel like you would blow the roof off.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: I don't know whether that'd be a compliment or a slap on the back of the head, but I'll take it.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: I appreciate that.
- 7:37SPEAKER_03: It's a it's a compliment.
- 7:39SPEAKER_03: I'm just saying, because everybody's everybody's styles are different, and I like I've I've heard it said.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: Like when I was at the store, the comedy store in Hollywood, I've heard judges on there say, like, man, I I could see you doing this festival, or I could see you doing this room and this club, or oh man, if you made it to the Midwest, or oh, if you did this in in Carolina, or oh man, you would do great in New York.
- 8:08SPEAKER_03: Like, I feel like people they they see you and they judge you.
- 8:14SPEAKER_03: And then they judge you based off of your jokes when you start talking.
- 8:19SPEAKER_03: And some people I think just gravitate more towards different areas.
- 8:23SPEAKER_03: Not everybody plays to everybody.
- 8:25SPEAKER_03: If you're somebody that plays to everyone and you can make any room laugh, then then you're Nate Bergazzi, you're a superstar.
- 8:33SPEAKER_03: And even him, it's like he probably doesn't make every room laugh, but you could probably get close.
- 8:38SPEAKER_03: You know what I mean?
- 8:39SPEAKER_03: I feel like I feel like there's just certain certain strengths that people have as they're coming up, and and maybe others that have weaknesses.
- 8:47SPEAKER_03: Like my biggest weakness, and this will get into the next question.
- 8:51SPEAKER_03: My biggest weakness was doing a doing a black room, an all-black room.
- 8:57SPEAKER_03: The last time I did that, I bombed horrifically.
- 9:02SPEAKER_03: A horrific, stinky bomb.
- 9:05SPEAKER_03: It was really bad.
- 9:06SPEAKER_03: I I felt like I was getting run out of the building.
- 9:08SPEAKER_03: It was not good.
- 9:09SPEAKER_03: They were booing me and the whole thing.
- 9:11SPEAKER_03: So, coming into my next question, Ed, what do you think has been your biggest bomb that you've had since starting comedy?
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I've had a lot of them.
- 9:25SPEAKER_03: Um as have we all.
- 9:29SPEAKER_03: As have we all.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: You know, I when I look back on my illustrious um extensive uh dark-ended open mic comedy movie.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: Um I I did I did a lot of.
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: How many shows would you done?
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: I don't know, I'd have to guess probably maybe maybe a hundred.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: But uh one that I remember vividly.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: Um and I would do my best not to drop names, but people who people who know will know who I'm talking about.
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: I I went to Solaris open mic one night.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: And I had no new material to to try out, I had no new jokes, um, and I decided that hey, this this set, this five minutes that I'm about ready to do is gonna be me like screwing around for the next five minutes.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: I don't want to impress anybody, I don't care, I'm not gonna pull out my best stuff.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: I'm just gonna bounce stuff off the wall and see what sticks, right?
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: I went on stage for five solid minutes and just dislike killed the room.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: Like no one laughed, not even a s not even a chuckle, not even a wink.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: And after that set, I learned that there was a prominent local but you know quasi-famous comedian in the room that night.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: A guy who books rooms and a guy who tra who's on tour and and does uh uh cruise ships and such.
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: And it's like, how come no one let me know that that guy was in the room?
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: Do you think I would have dive minutes about my taint if I knew that that guy was in the room?
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: You know, it depends on the person.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: Some people like taint material.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: Um well if it was taint, it was not with the set tainted.
- 11:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was tainted.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: Totally.
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: And it smelled like shit.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: And uh Well, let me ask you this though.
- 11:51SPEAKER_03: Let me ask you this though.
- 11:52SPEAKER_03: If you're doing something like that and you're just like, hey, let me just try stuff, let me just try ideas, maybe it's not even stuff written down, that's not necessarily a bad thing.
- 12:01SPEAKER_03: And those sets aren't always going to go well, but there's gold that can come out of those things.
- 12:06SPEAKER_03: So was there anything that you took away from that set that you feel like in your mind was like, this is the bomb I remember?
- 12:14SPEAKER_03: Is there anything that you took away learning and see now in a positive light?
- 12:20SPEAKER_03: Something that you learn from that set?
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, of course.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: Every set's a learning opportunity.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: Um I learned that you never know who's in the room, you never know who's watching, and um it's okay to fuck around uh sorry, it's okay to screw around.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: You can say whatever you want, dude.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: It's okay to frick around, as Dave would say.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: Let's freaking go.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: And uh, you know, try new stuff, but you know, you always want to put your best foot forward.
- 12:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 12:56SPEAKER_03: I think it's that part of like believing in it too.
- 12:59SPEAKER_03: Like maybe you're gonna say something crazy and maybe it's not gonna work, but like believe in it.
- 13:05SPEAKER_03: You know what I mean?
- 13:06SPEAKER_03: And then maybe it's like, oh, okay, yeah, it didn't work.
- 13:08SPEAKER_03: Like I I would say, because we we went to that mic together tonight.
- 13:11SPEAKER_03: Shout out Grand Comedy Club if you're looking for something on a Sunday.
- 13:14SPEAKER_03: Um we we went to this mic.
- 13:16SPEAKER_03: There was some stuff that I tried that went okay.
- 13:18SPEAKER_03: There was some other ones I tried not so great.
- 13:21SPEAKER_03: But one of the ones that I tried that didn't go over so great, I do believe in it, and I'm gonna keep doing it and tweaking it until I get it to a place that I feel like with the right people, it's gonna do well.
- 13:36SPEAKER_03: So I do think that I agree with you, every set's a learning opportunity.
- 13:42SPEAKER_03: Whether or not you felt like you bombed or whatever the thing is, every set is a learning opportunity.
- 13:47SPEAKER_03: And yeah, that's totally true.
- 13:49SPEAKER_03: Even at Open Mics, sometimes there can be decision makers, there can be bookers that are watching, and they can see you and be like, hey, you know what?
- 13:55SPEAKER_03: Maybe I want to book this guy on a show because it's freaking funny.
- 13:58SPEAKER_03: But then again, there are those sets that you do where you're trying out new stuff, you're trying new ideas, you're trying new bits, you're trying new stuff, and maybe it doesn't show your best work.
- 14:07SPEAKER_03: But then again, if you always just did your best work every time, then you would never get better and you would never create, you would never expand your horizons, you would never learn anything more because you're doing the same stuff over and over again.
- 14:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I I'm with you on that because you know we've all seen those comics um that do the same material over and over and over again, and they do it the same way over and over and over again.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: Um, but you know, a happy medium between fricking around for five minutes and doing my you know the best stuff that I think I have for five minutes, there's there's there's it's it's a it's a spectrum.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: There's a gray area in there, you know what I mean?
- 14:49SPEAKER_03: There is.
- 14:50SPEAKER_03: And just double check on time.
- 14:52SPEAKER_03: If you look down at your phone and see that recording, what does it say we're at?
- 14:55SPEAKER_03: 14 what?
- 14:56SPEAKER_03: 1455.
- 14:58SPEAKER_03: 1455.
- 14:59SPEAKER_03: That's about are we doing it, are we extending it to a 30 or are we doing 15?
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: You got more questions for me?
- 15:06SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, I do.
- 15:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, let's make it a little longer.
- 15:08SPEAKER_03: Let's make it a little longer.
- 15:09SPEAKER_03: How much longer you got in on your drive?
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: For you, Dave, I'll I'll do whatever, man.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: Oh shoot.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: Okay, let's we can do another 10.
- 15:17SPEAKER_03: Uh, okay, so first of all, I should have asked, and I forgot this up top, so I genuinely apologize.
- 15:23SPEAKER_03: But what car do you drive?
- 15:24SPEAKER_03: This is a Carmedy Podcast.
- 15:26SPEAKER_03: What car are you driving?
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: Uh right now I'm currently in a Tesla Model 3.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: Dang, look at you.
- 15:34SPEAKER_03: You support Elon.
- 15:36SPEAKER_03: Let's go.
- 15:38SPEAKER_03: We love that.
- 15:39SPEAKER_03: We love that in the Carmody Pod! Please sponsor me, Elon.
- 15:43SPEAKER_03: I will take a Tesla sponsor any day.
- 15:46SPEAKER_03: Uh you know, hail Elon.
- 15:48SPEAKER_03: Hail Elon.
- 15:50SPEAKER_03: I just did the movement too with the arm.
- 15:54SPEAKER_03: I just did hail Elon, man.
- 15:56SPEAKER_03: You know, like they say in those Marvel movies, they say hail Hydra.
- 15:59SPEAKER_03: I'm saying hail Tesla.
- 16:01SPEAKER_03: Let's go, dude.
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: You know, immediately people uh people want to poo-poo on Tesla.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: I don't drive Tesla because of Elon's politics.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: I don't drive Tesla because I'm trying to save the planet.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: I drive Tesla because it's a badass car.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: It's fast as well.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: Let's freaking go.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: And uh the price of a kilowatt hasn't gone up in like a decade.
- 16:24SPEAKER_03: Let's freaking go.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: So it works for me, it works for my family.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: Uh, I love it.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: I wouldn't trade it for the world or you know.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: I mean, if you offer me a Porsche GT3, yeah, I'm probably taking the Porsche.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: But I love I love my freaking Tesla, dude.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: I freaking love that.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: And okay, so what did you think?
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: Go ahead.
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: Sorry, go ahead.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: I didn't mean to step on your brother.
- 16:51SPEAKER_03: No, no, no, you're good, you're good.
- 16:53SPEAKER_03: Um, I I love to talk positively about comedy.
- 16:57SPEAKER_03: So it's just, you know, even if it is like the thing you mentioned, the the bomb, but then the thing you learned about.
- 17:03SPEAKER_03: I love being able to discuss that in comedy because I feel like so many people look at social media, and this is my next question for you.
- 17:11SPEAKER_03: Sorry, it's gonna be a little long, long form.
- 17:14SPEAKER_03: My next you know, question for you, and I would love to discuss this with you.
- 17:17SPEAKER_03: There's so many people that post just the wins.
- 17:21SPEAKER_03: You know, these people that uh kind of network with everyone, they get in with everyone, and they get booked a lot on shows, and then they just post all of these different clips, and it's kind of just like just all the wins, you know what I mean?
- 17:36SPEAKER_03: But there's not really any losses that people are kind of displaying.
- 17:42SPEAKER_03: It's just kind of the wins.
- 17:44SPEAKER_03: And so, what I would like to ask you, as far as social media is concerned, what are your thoughts on this new trend now where people are posting and openly talking about all the losses?
- 17:56SPEAKER_03: Or are you aware that this is something that is kind of becoming a trend?
- 18:00SPEAKER_03: People posting the the biggest bombs, you know, whether it be on YouTube, like a long video of it or or a shorts reel on Instagram.
- 18:09SPEAKER_03: What do you think about people posting the the losses and the crushing defeats?
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: Uh I I don't know about the trend.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: I don't I don't follow you might be surprised by this, but I don't really follow social media trends.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: Um but uh now to hear that there is uh an uptick of people being real on social media, I'm all for that.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: Because uh social media, unfortunately, you know, it's it's it's curated, it's what people want you to see.
- 18:44SPEAKER_01: They want you to see, you know, the crowd loving you and laughing and and look, oh look how funny this guy is.
- 18:50SPEAKER_01: Oh, this this is the best joke he told all month.
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: To hear that people are being real or being real err on social media, that's that that's uh that's good.
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: I I appreciate that.
- 19:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you know, I think the thing about it is like I feel like if you had a manager or an agent, you're like, man, you don't want to show like a vulnerable moment, you don't want to show when a heckler got the best of you, you don't want to show this thing or whatever, but there is so much learning within that, and there is a build-up of a story that people have around you.
- 19:31SPEAKER_03: I feel like if you are a personality and you tell people about the things that you're learning about or the things that you are struggling in, you know, like I gotta I gotta tell you, and I'm still going through this right now.
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: My opening and closing of my sets is the part I struggle with the most.
- 19:52SPEAKER_03: Because I'm always thinking about that question in my head before I'm going up.
- 19:57SPEAKER_03: I'm listening to the person set.
- 19:59SPEAKER_03: I don't know if you do this as well, but I'm listening to the person set that's going before me, and I'm thinking to myself, is there anything that I want to say about this person as I go up?
- 20:09SPEAKER_03: Is there anything that I want to pick out and say before I get into my material?
- 20:16SPEAKER_03: And and sometimes that goes well, and sometimes it does not go well.
- 20:20SPEAKER_03: Like tonight, the guy before me was saying something about the disabled person or whatever, and then I went up there and talked about the disabled um para-Olimpian that's trying out for the regular Olympics, shooting arrows with his feet, and and then it was like, okay, well, that that joke just kind of duded out, and then I'm like, frick, I should have just gone into what I wanted to say.
- 20:47SPEAKER_03: So my question to you is how do you kind of do that?
- 20:52SPEAKER_03: And do you tend to just go straight into your material, or do you tend to kind of say something off of what the last person said or mention what the last person was saying?
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: I uh listen, if if someone is on stage before me and makes me feel a certain way about a joke or a premise or or you know, and he throws a softball and doesn't talk about it before I get on stage, then yes, I'm I'm tempted to swing at that softball.
- 21:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: Uh but what I think happened with you tonight, and this is just my opinion, dude, that that guy the premise was good.
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: The premise was there, but no one in the room was there with him for his joke.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: His punchline didn't land, and no one was really paying attention.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: And then you came in, and then so you're like, Yeah, that's a great premise.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: You went in on it, and just like him, people were like, What's this dude talking about with feet and archery?
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: And what?
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Like, you know what I mean?
- 22:02SPEAKER_01: He didn't have the room.
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: Now, if he had the room and had the room going on his bit, and you come in and you start adding yours, then yeah, dude, you're you're you're gonna ride that wave that that uh create.
- 22:16SPEAKER_03: Um I do my point.
- 22:21SPEAKER_03: If he doesn't land it, he or she doesn't land it, then if I'm kind of going off of that, I'm kind of setting myself up.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean you're you're asking to ride his wave of of failure.
- 22:32SPEAKER_03: Dude, I love that.
- 22:33SPEAKER_03: I actually never really considered that unless I'm like pooping on what they did, like, dude, that joke was terrible.
- 22:42SPEAKER_03: Or were or maybe something outrageous that they were doing, like that one time I called out the guy that was looking at the ceiling because he said he was a schizophrenic, and then everybody laughed at that.
- 22:52SPEAKER_03: Well, yeah, I never really considered that.
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because everybody in the room felt that way about that guy.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: So you stated the obvious and and went right in on him, and it worked.
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: Um I I've made the mistake of like crap talking the comic before me or crap talking the host.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: Um, and you know, most of the time it doesn't it doesn't work out well.
- 23:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: So I try to avoid that at all costs because you know, someone else's art is their art, and I don't want to I don't want to crap on their their stuff, just like I don't want people to crap on my art.
- 23:30SPEAKER_03: So yeah.
- 23:32SPEAKER_03: You know, I gotta say, the the time when I did that and I learned don't mess with the host, is I got invited to go up to Bakersfield and to perform at the Well Comedy Club, and I was so happy.
- 23:46SPEAKER_03: This was like pretty early on.
- 23:48SPEAKER_03: I was so happy.
- 23:48SPEAKER_03: It was my very first show that like a comedy club had invited me to come do, and I was so excited to do it, and I drove up to Bakersfield early and I worked there all day, and you know, obviously, you you've been to Bakersfield, I'm assuming, right?
- 24:05SPEAKER_03: You've been there, yep.
- 24:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, there's nothing nice about Bakersfield, but I was excited to be there, you know, and I went up there and my opener, because the the hosts were like sitting on stage because they were judging it, it was like a competition/slash interview type show.
- 24:23SPEAKER_03: And the first thing I said is that they look like Spongebob or or Mermaid, that they look like Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy from SpongeBob, which in my defense a little bit, they did look like Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, but they looked at me and they were just like, What?
- 24:42SPEAKER_03: And then the audience looked at me and they were just like, Okay, and it completely ruined the set.
- 24:48SPEAKER_03: And I was like, Oh no, I just said that, and then they and then they brushed me off the stage.
- 24:55SPEAKER_03: They were like, No, no interview for you.
- 24:58SPEAKER_03: You're good.
- 24:58SPEAKER_03: Go ahead.
- 24:59SPEAKER_03: Oh man.
- 25:00SPEAKER_03: And then and then and then the guy says, Isn't it cool that people, you know, drive really far to, you know, get better and work stuff out?
- 25:10SPEAKER_03: And he goes, buddy, that's gonna be a long drive home.
- 25:15SPEAKER_03: Because he knew how far I drove to come do that show, and I started out doing something, and then I spiraled out of control, and then I did it, I did this joke that I did once and then never did again, where I ask a woman her opinion, and then I let her give her opinion, and then I say, Ah, I don't I don't really care.
- 25:35SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, so everybody in the room hated me, everybody hated me, I hated me, and I did what I do when really bad bombs happen.
- 25:49SPEAKER_03: I drove home, no music, no talking, just sitting.
- 25:55SPEAKER_03: Re listened to the set, and I just sat with it, and I learned, and I wrote stuff down, and yeah, it was crazy.
- 26:06SPEAKER_02: It was crazy.
- 26:08SPEAKER_03: Alright, let's do one more question before we get out of here.
- 26:12SPEAKER_03: And first of all, thank you so much for being on.
- 26:14SPEAKER_03: I appreciate you.
- 26:15SPEAKER_03: I know you're an avid listener, and I've been excited to have you on.
- 26:19SPEAKER_03: Um considering like because how long you've been doing comedy now?
- 26:23SPEAKER_03: For like eight months?
- 26:25SPEAKER_01: No, like 14 months, 15 months.
- 26:28SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 26:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 26:29SPEAKER_03: So it's been over a year.
- 26:31SPEAKER_03: So what is your what I would say you what is your goal for the next year?
- 26:38SPEAKER_03: What is something that you're kind of doing slash focusing on?
- 26:42SPEAKER_03: Or do you have any like goals, comedy goals that you want to have accomplished by the end of this year or into next year?
- 26:51SPEAKER_03: What are some of the things that you're looking to do that you want to accomplish?
- 26:58SPEAKER_01: Uh you know, everyone talks about goals.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: Oh, you gotta have goals.
- 27:03SPEAKER_01: I think Shoddy talked about it in your last episode.
- 27:06SPEAKER_01: I don't have like set in stone, I want to perform, you know, at the comedy store by this date.
- 27:15SPEAKER_01: Um I want to continue to get better.
- 27:18SPEAKER_01: I want to keep writing.
- 27:20SPEAKER_01: I want to get in front of rooms that I've never been in front of before.
- 27:25SPEAKER_01: Um, I want to take risks on stage.
- 27:28SPEAKER_01: I want to keep learning, you know.
- 27:32SPEAKER_01: Right now I feel like I'm still kind of in my comedy apprenticeship, and I'm still absorbing as much as I'm trying to create.
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: Um, my biggest goal would get to a point where I stop absorbing and just create.
- 27:48SPEAKER_01: That'll be my next milestone, my next rung on the ladder.
- 27:53SPEAKER_01: And then, you know, whatever happens after that happens, dude.
- 27:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 27:58SPEAKER_03: And you know, I think one of the reasons why I felt like you were a cool dude to hang out with and stuff, is because a lot of people don't listen to the other people's comedy.
- 28:09SPEAKER_03: They they usually leave and and they aren't like fans necessarily of other people in their comedy.
- 28:17SPEAKER_03: But you do go to shows and you go and you support people.
- 28:20SPEAKER_03: And if I'm down in the area, or if other people we know that we're close to are in the area performing, like you go as a fan, not even to perform, but just to to hang out and support.
- 28:31SPEAKER_03: And so, like, kind of talk to me about that of what you think of how you think that's kind of vital to the community to not only be like just performing with people, but also like being fans of local people that are that are doing well and doing stuff.
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: Tonight of tonight was a good example.
- 28:50SPEAKER_01: Um, I know you had to go, you had to split, you know, you have other things on your plate.
- 28:56SPEAKER_01: Uh, you did your five, you hung out for one or two more comics, and then you had to go.
- 29:00SPEAKER_01: I get it.
- 29:01SPEAKER_01: Me personally, I went up pretty early tonight, and I knew from the moment I was done performing that I was gonna sit through the rest of the show.
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: From the next comic all the way through the deadliner.
- 29:15SPEAKER_01: Because if if I'm gonna subject someone to my art, I'm gonna give them that same respect, that same guy that's sitting in the back of the room who's going up last.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: I want to give him that same opportunity to make me laugh.
- 29:30SPEAKER_01: And you know, to have a good time and and to show me something that maybe I haven't seen before.
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm a comedy fan first.
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: I'm a I enjoy the art form, and I I will never leave a show early, ever.
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: Especially a free one.
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, these open mics are free, like we don't have to pay to get in the door.
- 29:53SPEAKER_01: They usually have decent food and good drinks.
- 29:57SPEAKER_01: Um, why the hell would I ever leave a show early?
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: Ever.
- 30:03SPEAKER_03: Most people would say because either they have work or they have another mic to go to.
- 30:10SPEAKER_03: Those generally the two main reasons why comics leave is because they're working or they're going to something else, going to another mic.
- 30:20SPEAKER_03: What's the timeout, by the way?
- 30:21SPEAKER_01: 30 minutes, 20 seconds, brother.
- 30:24SPEAKER_03: Dang.
- 30:25SPEAKER_03: Alright, we're just making this episode 15 because this is what it is.
- 30:28SPEAKER_03: Um what were you gonna what were you gonna say?
- 30:31SPEAKER_03: What did you say?
- 30:31SPEAKER_03: Sorry, I got you off, my bad.
- 30:33SPEAKER_01: That's right, I was gonna say there's the third kind, uh, which is so self-absorbed that uh they don't care to listen to everybody's stuff.
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: They don't care if they go up first, they're leaving at the second comic.
- 30:49SPEAKER_01: You know?
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: And I I've re I've met some of those people too, and they're not always the funnest people to hang out with.
- 30:58SPEAKER_03: I've always heard, and I know a lot of people do this, that they're like, I don't want to listen to other comics because I don't want in my mind to hear their stuff when I'm writing so that none of it gets stolen.
- 31:10SPEAKER_03: And I don't know, maybe if I'm just naive or blind or whatever, but like I think that's just like a really stupid way of saying, like, I just don't want to listen to other people.
- 31:22SPEAKER_03: Like, are you having that hard of a time writing that you just feel like if you hear it that you're gonna write it?
- 31:30SPEAKER_03: I mean, maybe, maybe for some people, but you know, when I listen to all of these great amazing comics of our day, of our generation, or the generation before us, you know what they're all talking about?
- 31:44SPEAKER_03: Or almost all, minus like Dave Chappelle, because he's a big like I don't like listening to other comics.
- 31:50SPEAKER_03: But like they're all talking about, oh, when you did this thing when you were on stage, or you did this thing when you're on stage.
- 31:56SPEAKER_03: Oh, I remember that time we were at the cellar and you did this, and and all of us were making fun of you because we were sitting on the back table watching you.
- 32:04SPEAKER_03: I love those stories, you know what I mean?
- 32:08SPEAKER_03: But so many people are like anti-fan of comedy, of local comedy, or they're or they look at it just like, oh, I'm better than this person, so I don't want to watch.
- 32:21SPEAKER_03: Or I don't want to listen because they're just gonna bomb and they bomb every time.
- 32:26SPEAKER_03: And like, yeah, there's some people that can definitely be a rough listen, but like dude, there's freaking a whole possum family in the in the street.
- 32:35SPEAKER_03: Live on Carmody, we have a possum family in the street, folks.
- 32:40SPEAKER_03: Um awesome possum.
- 32:44SPEAKER_03: Uh, but like, I feel like if you do, I mean, it doesn't mean you have to listen to them every single freaking time if it's just like, okay, this is insane.
- 32:51SPEAKER_03: But I feel like if people especially give you the time, giving them some time back is is not a bad thing at all.
- 32:57SPEAKER_03: And I appreciate that about you, Ed.
- 32:59SPEAKER_03: So thank you for doing that.
- 33:00SPEAKER_01: No, man.
- 33:01SPEAKER_01: Don't don't thank me.
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: Thank uh thank the craft beer and the uh waiter or waitress that's taking care of me at the pain.
- 33:10SPEAKER_03: You're like, let me tell you, if there wasn't good drinks and a cute waitress, trust me, I would not have listened to you.
- 33:16SPEAKER_03: There yet.
- 33:18SPEAKER_01: There are a lot of factors.
- 33:22SPEAKER_03: I freaking love that.
- 33:24SPEAKER_03: All right, man.
- 33:25SPEAKER_03: Well, we're kind of getting over the time now.
- 33:27SPEAKER_03: We talked about a lot of different stuff.
- 33:29SPEAKER_03: I think this was really fun.
- 33:31SPEAKER_03: I think it's it's gonna be a great listen.
- 33:33SPEAKER_03: First of all, I want to shout out all the comedians that are out there.
- 33:37SPEAKER_03: Thank you guys so much for listening.
- 33:39SPEAKER_03: Um, it's always amazing to see that people listen to the pod.
- 33:44SPEAKER_03: And I know, like Ed, he's a guy that listens to the pod.
- 33:48SPEAKER_03: And I wanted to have him on because he's also a comic.
- 33:51SPEAKER_03: So if any of you comics that listen want to come on at some point, uh I would love to have you guys on because it's fun just talking about comedy and talking about bombs or learning things and talking about what whatever the thing may be.
- 34:04SPEAKER_03: Uh, it's always a good time.
- 34:05SPEAKER_03: It's always fun just to get together, freaking you know, do some ideas and stuff.
- 34:10SPEAKER_03: Um, but I guess let's let's let's end on this because I love talking about jokes.
- 34:14SPEAKER_03: Okay, this is actually gonna be the end.
- 34:15SPEAKER_03: I promise I swear.
- 34:16SPEAKER_03: Uh is there any bits you're working on right now?
- 34:20SPEAKER_03: Something that maybe you haven't been able to crack, something you're you're working on.
- 34:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I my mind's going a thousand miles an hour all the time.
- 34:31SPEAKER_01: Uh, but one bit Hopefully not in the Tesla.
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I don't know.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: Uh but uh one of my latest bit that I'm I'm chewing on in my mind is like my list of complaints about white people.
- 34:47SPEAKER_01: And obviously, uh well you may not know.
- 34:49SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm a white dude myself.
- 34:51SPEAKER_01: Oh no.
- 34:52SPEAKER_01: So, you know, I I kind of have an inside scoop and an inside perspective about uh white people and their habits and uh their bull crap.
- 35:02SPEAKER_01: So I'm working on complaints about my own people.
- 35:07SPEAKER_01: Um some of it's self-deprecating, obviously.
- 35:10SPEAKER_01: Some of it is uh observational, um, some of it is uh cultural, let's just say that.
- 35:17SPEAKER_01: But uh yeah, I'm working on that right now.
- 35:19SPEAKER_01: I'm chewing on it, and uh hopefully you'll see it on stage, or someone will see it on stage soon.
- 35:26SPEAKER_03: Is that the one that you were doing where you kind of mentioned that there's like a ton of white people in your city?
- 35:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so that that's part of you know, part of the evolution of the bit and the joke uh is setting up the premise, and and you know, the city that I now live in is freaking full of white people, dude.
- 35:45SPEAKER_01: Like they're everywhere.
- 35:48SPEAKER_01: Uh and it it makes me uncomfortable.
- 35:50SPEAKER_01: Like it really makes me uncomfortable.
- 35:52SPEAKER_01: And I'm white, like it makes me uncomfortable to be around all these white people.
- 35:56SPEAKER_01: And see them verbally abuse waitresses and see them uh complain that their their drink is not balanced, and uh, you know, having their dogs sit on the chair at the table at the restaurant next to them, and you know, there's so much that uh that goes into it, but yeah, man.
- 36:16SPEAKER_03: I freaking hate it when people bring dogs into restaurants.
- 36:20SPEAKER_03: I used to deal with that all the time when I was a restaurant manager.
- 36:23SPEAKER_03: There'd be people that would be like, oh no, it's a it's a service dog, it's a service dog, it's a service dog, and I'm just like, it's not a freaking service dog.
- 36:32SPEAKER_03: I swear this is not a service dog.
- 36:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and just I've got a pick I've gotta pick dog hair out of my$18 margarita because you were too troubled to leave your quote unquote service dog at home.
- 36:48SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 36:49SPEAKER_01: Like, I don't know.
- 36:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:50SPEAKER_01: Uh so it's Are you are you a regular margarita or a skinny margarita guy?
- 36:54SPEAKER_01: Look at Dave, do I does anything about me scream skinny anything?
- 36:59SPEAKER_01: No, absolutely not.
- 37:00SPEAKER_03: I just wanted to ask the question because I knew you were gonna say that.
- 37:07SPEAKER_03: I knew you were gonna say that! No.
- 37:12SPEAKER_03: I do make a good skinny margarita, though.
- 37:14SPEAKER_03: I do make a good skinny margarita.
- 37:16SPEAKER_03: Kind of wild, actually.
- 37:18SPEAKER_03: Hey, we're at 37 minutes, man.
- 37:20SPEAKER_03: Cut this off or get out of here.
- 37:22SPEAKER_03: Let's freaking get out of here.
- 37:23SPEAKER_03: Alright, you guys, thank you so much for listening.
