- Keenan: Okay, so we're on day five of our nine days to believe. And the quote today is this: success about wins and losses. Welcome back, True and Real. We're halfway through the series: Nine Days to Belief. Over the past few days, we've talked about a few things: curiosity, learning from failure, and choosing obedience over comfort. Today we're We're talking about something that affects every one of us. How do you define success? Ted Lasso once said something that completely flips our normal way of thinking. Success isn't always about wins and losses. At first I heard that and I was like, Matt's kind of weird, because how do we know? just sounds weird. It's strange. I mean, that's what sports are literally all about winning and losing. But Ted understood something much deeper. The scoreboard doesn't always tell the whole story, and neither does life. So for a long time I measured success the way many people do. Did I accomplish enough? Was I moving forward? Was I checking the next box? Graduate school, passing exams, getting license, building a career, starting a private practice, trying to Grow a private practice. But none of and none of those things are bad. In fact, many of them gifts from God. But somewhere along the way, I realize something. My identity ⁓ and falls with my accomplishments. I'll never have peace ⁓ I believe that. Because there will always be another goal. There will always be another milestone. There will always be another comparison, another mountain to climb. Achievement. Is a terrible foundation for identity. For identity. Psychologists talk about something called hedonic adaptation. It is our tendency to quickly adjust to success. The promotion that felt exciting eventually becomes normal. The new house ⁓ ordinary. The accomplishment fades. Then we start chasing the next thing. And the next thing. And that's why so many successful people feel so empty. Because success can satisfy ambition, but it can't satisfy the soul. Purpose lasts much longer than performance will. So what does the Bible say? So one of my favorite verses found in Matthew 25, Jesus tells parable When the faithful turf servant returns, ⁓ he doesn't say Well done, good and successful servant, he says, done, good and faithful servant. Faithfulness, not fame, not influence, not wealth, not recognition, not the nice car, not the nice house. Faithfulness. doesn't ask me to be the biggest counseling practice in Florida. He asks me to be faithful to me. With the people he places in front of me. God doesn't ask me to have the largest podcast audience. he asked me to faithfully share the truth. The results belong to him. The obedience belongs to me. So one of the questions ⁓ I asked a lot is Who taught you ⁓ what success looks like? And sometimes, the answer is parents, sometimes it's culture. Sometimes it's social media, sometimes it's fear. But very few people have ever stopped to ask this: Does my definition of success actually come from God? When our worth depends on achievement, failure feels devastating. When our worth rests in Christ, we can work hard without worshiping success. So As I build this counseling thing, as I create these podcast episodes and I network and I meet with people, and as I dream about the future and think about where I'm gonna be, I have to remind myself of this thing almost every freaking day. Success is not married, married success is not measured by downloads, followers, income. Like, don't get me wrong, those things are matter, those things matter and they're important and they're great, but they aren't The ultimate. If one person encounters hope, if one marriage begins to heal, if one father decides to become more present, if one person takes that first step towards counseling, that success is a hundred percent worth celebrating because eternity measures success differently than our world we culture today. So this week, take a look at this. Ask yourself a couple of questions. What scorecard am I using to measure my life? If no one applauded me, would I still choose to be faithful? Where is God asking me to be obedient instead of oppressive, instead of impressive? Then pray this. help me seek your approval more than the approval of people. Teach me to value faithfulness over recognition and obedience and obedience over achievement. Let you my life bring glory to you, whether anyone else notices or not. And we'll wrap up with this. Tomorrow we're gonna be tackling one of Ted Lasso's most honest quotes. The truth will set you free. But first, it'll take you off. We'll talk about why healing often begins with uncomfortable honesty, about ourselves, the relationships that we're in, and Just our need for God's grace. then, don't measure your life by applause. ⁓ it by faithfulness. Because one day, the only words that will truly matter are these: Well done, good and faithful servant. I'm Keenan. This has been Rooted and Real with Keenan. And I'll see you all tomorrow.
