- 0:00laced up let's go it's time for banter with the
- 0:04boys welcome back to banter with the boys fast
- 0:17laps i am joe starting off a little bit differently
- 0:20we don't have smelty today instead it is just
- 0:23me and our lovely guest slash permanent guest
- 0:27slash co -host mike hello hi i'm here again i'm
- 0:32not smelty you're not smelty no believe it or
- 0:34not we're gonna have to i'm in his chair i mean
- 0:36we're gonna gonna have to kind of you know navigate
- 0:39this a little bit wing it we're winging it a
- 0:41little bit yep it's been a busy day smelty's
- 0:43gone he's he's incredibly busy with work right
- 0:45now i think you are incredibly incredibly busy
- 0:47with work right now you almost didn't make it
- 0:49yeah i'm very busy with work too the outline
- 0:51is barely done so it's gonna be it's gonna be
- 0:54an off the an off the cuff one a little bit and
- 0:56of course as always kevin behind the cameras
- 0:59behind the mics he's waving you can't see it
- 1:01but i promise he is waving and he's smiling he's
- 1:04happy to be here he's happy to be here he's crying
- 1:09Yeah, without further ado, I think we should
- 1:11get into it. We have a little bit to cover. Yeah,
- 1:13I think so. All right, let's do it. starting
- 1:23off per usual i think we should just kind of
- 1:25get into what happened before the race uh before
- 1:28the race happened uh not i usually have sometimes
- 1:31i'll have like paragraphs uh i'll have like a
- 1:33lot of bullet points i don't have a ton this
- 1:35time around um uh the first point i have yuki
- 1:38out in q1 starting in 20th just right off the
- 1:41bat um and then my actually only two i guess
- 1:45uh stroll to miss spain um there were uh i guess
- 1:49he still injured or he had to get into surgery
- 1:51i think i think Maybe it revolved around his
- 1:53wrist. I know he had a bicycling accident at
- 1:55one point. This was like a year and a half ago
- 1:58or something like that. He was out bicycling
- 2:00and got injured and had to go in and get surgery
- 2:03done on his hand and came back maybe sooner than
- 2:06he should have. and uh just kept racing and i
- 2:10guess they're saying that he just exasperated
- 2:12it and yeah i mean if you don't have someone
- 2:14fully healed and you keep working it it's not
- 2:15going to make it better no it's not especially
- 2:17not in something as demanding as formula one
- 2:19right right yeah and so i think we should talk
- 2:21a little bit i don't know if you've heard anything
- 2:22about it but you know what his future looks like
- 2:24and just for the next coming races we'll talk
- 2:26about it um lots to talk about jumping into the
- 2:30race that's all we have for kind of the pre -race
- 2:32banter um jumping into the race the starting
- 2:34grid um piastri norris and happen um russell
- 2:38hamilton antony leclerc ghastly hajar and then
- 2:43alonzo uh a bit of a mix -up uh at the uh really
- 2:48actually the latter half of that one big noticeable
- 2:51difference near the start but right off the bat
- 2:53mclaren won two i mean Did you think, I mean,
- 2:57did you think that your prediction was, you had
- 2:59some, you had Piastri first in your prediction.
- 3:02Right. I think I had Norse and then I had Piastri
- 3:05on third. Right. I mean, they're, they're looking,
- 3:08still looking very good. I mean, very comfortable.
- 3:10I think I said it on our last pod that Andrea
- 3:14Stella had came out and commented saying like
- 3:16for everyone hoping that these, these wing changes
- 3:18are going to make a difference. You're looking
- 3:20at the wrong thing. No, yeah, that's an excellent
- 3:22point. It was right when we had some new. uh
- 3:25some new changes to the car and again just like
- 3:28the rear wing everyone thought that this would
- 3:29be their downfall but yeah it wasn't yeah that's
- 3:32i think like looking at it more i think a lot
- 3:36of uh a lot of people are kind of narrowing in
- 3:39that their biggest strength right now is probably
- 3:42um their tire management and that mostly comes
- 3:45from the cooling of their brakes they're just
- 3:47way better at cooling their brakes than any other
- 3:49car on the grid i don't know did we talk about
- 3:52that last pot at all they're like the their brakes
- 3:55system being kind of like like i guess their
- 3:57biggest outlier right now right to other teams
- 4:00it's like they have this like um auto cooling
- 4:02kind of like brake feature where like it separates
- 4:04the the brakes from the actual wheel and so dag
- 4:08is a little bit better for them i don't think
- 4:09it's like you know otherworldly different but
- 4:11it's enough clearly good enough yeah it was it
- 4:14was enough that like i know red bull was trying
- 4:17to like crack the whip and try to be like hey
- 4:19the mclaren guys are cheating you need to do
- 4:21something about it and so the fia like dug into
- 4:24their car to see if they could find some way
- 4:26and the fia was like now i mean everything looks
- 4:30good yep Everything looks good. A near perfect,
- 4:34flawless race from Piastri, I would say. Norris
- 4:38doing, unfortunately, a little kind of Norris
- 4:41things at the start. He fought hard, I will say,
- 4:43through the first turn. He didn't give it up,
- 4:45but he did lose it immediately, but gained it
- 4:47right back and then was pretty steady there for
- 4:50the rest of the race. There's been an ongoing
- 4:53joke I've been seeing across a bunch of different
- 4:55F1 content creators where people are keeping
- 4:57a bottle count, the Norris bottle count. And
- 5:02I think our bottle count for this season is up
- 5:04to 19. wow 19 different bottles yeah because
- 5:08he keeps on bottling it in different situations
- 5:10in qualifying or in races or i guess i feel like
- 5:14this season he's already at 19 i feel like that's
- 5:17gotta be like season i don't know i feel like
- 5:18these creators just are out of are out for lando
- 5:21there are some lando haters out there and i'm
- 5:22not here for it i don't know one of them is notably
- 5:25a huge mclaren fan like it's his favorite team
- 5:27yeah so i don't know man i don't know well maybe
- 5:30he has definitely shown himself doing it in the
- 5:32past but i feel like he's had a pretty good season
- 5:34i mean he's second Second in drivers. He's only
- 5:3610 points off of Piastri, but none of us would
- 5:39have expected Piastri to be leading at this point.
- 5:42Currently 50 points off of Max. Crazy. 49 to
- 5:46be exact, but 50 points off Max. Max is closer
- 5:48to Russell than Verstappen. Max is closer to
- 5:51Piastri. Right. Isn't that insane? And then Russell
- 5:53in fourth. I mean, Mr. Consistently just ending
- 5:57up on the podium, you know? Yeah. I mean, these.
- 6:01like just so good at just accidentally being
- 6:04there i had to double check i was like wait was
- 6:06he on the podium no no no he wasn't just in general
- 6:08he finds himself there a lot he's got he's got
- 6:11the points to kind of show it um but yeah i just
- 6:13wanted to kind of throw it out there uh what
- 6:15do you i mean i just kind of want to stay in
- 6:17piaggio just for a second longer like he had
- 6:20incredible race granted uh mclarens are known
- 6:22to be kind of a little a little worse in the
- 6:24dirty air like other cars but notably it seems
- 6:27to affect them a little bit more he had clean
- 6:29air so he stayed in front of the entire time
- 6:31i don't think it was at any point was it like
- 6:34a max level dominance of being like over like
- 6:3610 or 10 seconds or something crazy or was he
- 6:39just steadily in front i think he was just steadily
- 6:41in front i don't think it was quite that crazy
- 6:43i don't remember we uh we're recording this race
- 6:46the week two weeks yeah yeah oh yeah after so
- 6:49a little bit later so i don't remember the race
- 6:52exactly but i don't think it was quite that dominant
- 6:54but to be fair he did get the max first app and
- 6:57treatment that we saw him take off in corner
- 6:58one and didn't see him until he crossed the finish
- 7:00line yep so i mean clearly there was that level
- 7:04of dominance that like we didn't need to look
- 7:06at him at all no so i mean yeah he is just again
- 7:10proving to everybody why you know he is a champion
- 7:14in the making yeah like very possibly this year
- 7:18absolutely i i absolutely agree and i'll kind
- 7:20of i'll kind of keep it on mclaren for a second
- 7:22and then we'll we'll ease ourselves into um probably
- 7:25the biggest thing to come out i mean i i saw
- 7:28the memes you probably saw them too it was like
- 7:30lap one and two everyone kind of cheering it
- 7:32was really exciting like two to what was it uh
- 7:36two to like 60 yeah two to 63 was like like our
- 7:42two to 64 59 was like boring and then 60 to 64
- 7:45was like crazy again super crazy so after that
- 7:48safety car brought out by i believe antonelli
- 7:50his car just blew up right yep just stopped working
- 7:53uh on the restart we saw piastri kind of i mean
- 7:56that's exactly what happened like i don't know
- 7:59if you've seen the footage but literally he was
- 8:00coming up to a corner and you can hear his car
- 8:02just going yep and then it just stopped silent
- 8:05and then you and then you see like yeah yeah
- 8:08it's it's like i i obviously not fun to see cars
- 8:12retire but when you see him retire i love seeing
- 8:14just the internal explosion kind of happen like
- 8:16i i remember i think it was austria one year
- 8:18signs his like you could see his back just explode
- 8:21yeah a bit like it no like huge like explosion
- 8:25outside but you could see like the body work
- 8:27like kind of fattened out a little bit because
- 8:29the engine just killed itself yeah um yeah so
- 8:32uh until they went out safe car came out on the
- 8:35restart piazza kind of backed up the field a
- 8:36little bit max had a little bit of a moment there
- 8:38um i guess we'll talk about his his pit as well
- 8:41um he pit for new tires and all he had left were
- 8:44hards came out complaining about him and then
- 8:47we saw the restart and i guess we can kind of
- 8:50get into max downfall do you want to just kind
- 8:52of run us through it for yeah so he he pits for
- 8:56the hards and even like they so they called him
- 8:58in for the pit like right when he was coming
- 9:01up to the pit lane so there was no time for him
- 9:02to like to say wait why are we pitting what tire
- 9:05are we putting on what's going on it was basically
- 9:07just max get in the pit now and he just trusted
- 9:10gp trusted his pit wall got in the pit pulled
- 9:13out and literally wasn't even out of the pit
- 9:15lane before he got on his comms and was like
- 9:17wait are these hards did you guys put hards on
- 9:20my car and went out and basically just went through
- 9:25The race restart, coming through that final corner
- 9:28into the pit straight, lost some traction, fishtailed.
- 9:33I mean, a beautiful recovery. Such a good recovery.
- 9:36He was almost perpendicular. Yeah. Like, so good.
- 9:39Like, incredible that he saved that car. He should
- 9:42have spun out. Definitely. But yeah, it did just
- 9:45completely open the door for Charles Leclerc
- 9:47behind him to make a charge on him. He did try
- 9:51to defend it. It did look like he might have
- 9:53tapped Charles Leclerc, but it wasn't enough
- 9:57to damage either car. And Charles got the position,
- 10:01so there's no reason to make anything out of
- 10:02it. Yep. And then he had to struggle with Russell
- 10:05coming up behind him. And they fought into turn
- 10:09one where Russell kind of shoved him out, like
- 10:12jetted him off the track. And so he took that
- 10:15runoff that so many drivers were doing at the
- 10:17race. Russell took the runoff, I believe, right?
- 10:19No, Max took the runoff. Max took the runoff
- 10:21to come ahead of Russell. Oh, okay. You're right.
- 10:23And he came ahead of Russell. And because of
- 10:26that, the team got on the radio and said, you
- 10:29need to give that position back. And Max was
- 10:30like, why? I don't need to. And the GP said,
- 10:33just give it back. Don't fight it. Just give
- 10:35it back. And Max was just not having it. Already
- 10:38upset that he lost the position because he was
- 10:40on the wrong tires. Upset that he pit to begin
- 10:42with and they put him on hards. And then this
- 10:45happens as well when he was pretty confident
- 10:47that he didn't need to give that position back.
- 10:50Uh, so he might have let loose a little bit and
- 10:53crashed into Russell on turn. I think it's seven.
- 10:57Somebody can correct me, but no one's going to
- 10:59correct you here. Yeah. I think it's around that,
- 11:01around that turn, uh, the turn before the kind
- 11:03of the straight that goes into the longer straight,
- 11:06a little uphill. Yeah. Um, yeah. And that was
- 11:09kind of like the biggest question coming out
- 11:11of the race. I mean, like to the viewer, to us,
- 11:14it was like, that was intentional. He just rammed
- 11:16him. Um, but kind of in the paddock how it was
- 11:19looked at how it had to be looked at it was just
- 11:21like was that on purpose if it was he should
- 11:24probably get a bit more of a punishment for it
- 11:26versus yeah maybe he just maybe he thought that
- 11:30he wanted to give the place but then he didn't
- 11:31so he made a bad move so it was like just like
- 11:33who was like what his intention was and of course
- 11:36max beautifully during interviews doesn't give
- 11:38anything i don't want to talk about yeah doesn't
- 11:40give a single thing away so like still kind of
- 11:42up in the air he does end up with a 10 second
- 11:44penalty which kicks him back to yep uh and i
- 11:49think like i think we were like looking at it
- 11:51just like if he had well no yeah he kicked him
- 11:53back to 10th yep yeah and uh yeah he what was
- 11:59my comment that i had on it just a second ago
- 12:01my brain is farting um i do know that after just
- 12:05i think it was about a week ago um A little while
- 12:09after the race, a few days after the race, Max
- 12:11did actually come out and make a formal apology
- 12:13on, I think, Instagram. And it was him saying
- 12:17that, you know, that was not professional. You
- 12:20know, I shouldn't have done that. It wasn't the
- 12:24most, the best apology he could have made. It
- 12:28was kind of, kind of. Kind of on the side, Kevin's
- 12:33pulling it up on screen right now for us. Yeah,
- 12:35I think he definitely took accountability for
- 12:42the error he made. He definitely didn't say that
- 12:45he intentionally did it, and I don't think we
- 12:47got a crazy apology. We had an exciting strategy
- 12:50and good race in Barcelona until the safety car
- 12:53came out. Our tire choice to the end and some
- 12:55moves after the safety car restart fueled my
- 12:57frustration, leading to a move that was not right
- 13:00and shouldn't have happened. i always give everything
- 13:03out there for the team and emotions can run high
- 13:05he wins them together you lose them together
- 13:07see you in montreal so no real apology per se
- 13:10but um did he did say that the move he made was
- 13:13a bad move right um didn't say he intentionally
- 13:16tried hurting russell just said that it was not
- 13:18a good move yes which is really i mean that's
- 13:21pr at its finest right yep fair enough and it's
- 13:23good that he addressed it um I mean, he did take
- 13:28accountability for it. He said, I was frustrated
- 13:30and I made a bad move. He did. Which is. Like
- 13:33I said, for Max Verstappen, more than he usually
- 13:36gives. Like ordinarily. Which is nothing. Yeah,
- 13:39ordinarily he makes a move like that. And people
- 13:41want to complain about it. He just says, I don't
- 13:44want to talk about it. I'd say we got growth
- 13:45from him, right? I think the earliest image of
- 13:50him I can paint in my mind is him pushing Ocon
- 13:53after the issue they had on track. Now he's a
- 13:55dad. He's still making crazy moves on track.
- 14:00But he's a little bit more calm about it. He
- 14:03just doesn't talk. He's going the silent route,
- 14:06which I can respect. I don't care. I don't love
- 14:07all the journalists anyway. And the journalists
- 14:11want to create drama. Yeah. Definitely. Before
- 14:15we move on from Max, I just want to ask then,
- 14:17obviously he was under pressure on track. Is
- 14:20it getting to him? I feel like we've seen this
- 14:22in the past where he gets under pressure and
- 14:25he starts making really, really aggressive moves.
- 14:28We saw it with Lando last year a good couple
- 14:30times. Is it just when he's put in a really bad
- 14:32spot, he starts to crumble a little bit? I feel
- 14:36like he does have a little bit of that rage,
- 14:37and it's gamer rage. It is gamer rage. It is
- 14:40literally gamer rage. I was listening to a different
- 14:42podcast earlier. who literally one of the people
- 14:45in the podcast was saying that they say that
- 14:48move on George Russell is literally something
- 14:51you see out of a sim racing game. And they're
- 14:54like, probably because Max is a sim racer. He
- 14:57did what he would have done in a sim racing game.
- 15:00crashed into him he did what max sometimes does
- 15:02do yeah we've seen him do it like i've seen the
- 15:06streams like so uh yeah i mean it was probably
- 15:10just a lapse of judgment he got angry and you
- 15:13know um i've seen some people and i'm kind of
- 15:16i i assume i know what your take on this is going
- 15:18to be but i've seen some people on like reddit
- 15:20and twitter and instagram and stuff like that
- 15:22who've made some comments saying that max's and
- 15:27the way he acted doing that to Russell is a champion
- 15:30mindset. And they're recalling it to say, look
- 15:35at Michael Schumacher or Ayrton Senna or Niki
- 15:40Lauda. These were drivers that would always shunt
- 15:43other drivers off the track and push drivers
- 15:46off and make these super aggressive moves. And
- 15:49these guys are champions. yeah i mean you don't
- 15:58have to let that define a champion right so was
- 16:01hamilton yeah i mean i don't think hamilton ever
- 16:04intentionally did something like that to at least
- 16:06to my knowledge like i mean i'm sure he probably
- 16:08has and also those are really old drivers where
- 16:12like it Things were a little bit more lenient
- 16:14back then, still not good to do, but like different
- 16:17back then. It was like high. I mean, it still
- 16:19is high drama, big entertainment when we see
- 16:22it now. But like it's it was like more so the
- 16:24norm, I would say. it was more dangerous back
- 16:28then it was more dangerous there's more point
- 16:30of safety nowadays oh yeah doing something like
- 16:33what max did is very it's like yeah if he ever
- 16:35came out that that was 100 intentional and i
- 16:38don't think we'll look into it because i don't
- 16:39think anyone wants this to happen he would get
- 16:41bans like straight up straight up yeah i mean
- 16:44I think Rosberg was the one who was calling for
- 16:46a black flag on him. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Like a commentator.
- 16:49Like he was sitting here. He goes, he needs to
- 16:50be DQ'd for that. We need a black flag him. That
- 16:52is unacceptable. Yep. Instead, demoted to P10,
- 16:56one point and enough points on his license that
- 16:59one more and he gets a race ban. Yes, sir. Which
- 17:03is exciting. And if that happens, I mean. Do
- 17:07they bring Liam back up? Do they try Hajar out?
- 17:09Can they even do that? Or do they get a reserve
- 17:11driver? Red Bull actually has already commented
- 17:13saying the fact that to address fans wondering,
- 17:16they say that they've stated the fact that they
- 17:22are likely going to bring Hajar up to the new
- 17:25car. At that point, they've got the chance. It's
- 17:28a benchmark to Yuki. Yeah. And then they get
- 17:31to have a benchmark to Yuki and Hajar both in
- 17:34the Red Bull. Yuki should be scared of that moment.
- 17:36Yuki should be scared of that moment because
- 17:38if Hajar comes in and really lights it up in
- 17:40the Red Bull, they don't have a real reason to
- 17:42keep him around. I agree. Yeah. Like, put him
- 17:45back in the V -Carb and then you got Hajar. I
- 17:48absolutely agree with you. So... Right. Ferrari?
- 17:53Ferrari. I mean, P3 for Leclerc, that is... best
- 17:58no he got p2 in manico right yeah um so obviously
- 18:02wanting to get higher up there but podiums back
- 18:05-to -back podiums which is the best we've seen
- 18:07ferrari all year so far um hamilton not super
- 18:10far behind in six uh picking up that extra place
- 18:13once max got demoted which is nice a little bit
- 18:16of a more rough race for hamilton i think it
- 18:19seems to be kind of yeah it seems to be kind
- 18:21of a It's becoming a thing. Yeah. I think he's
- 18:24still acclimating to the car. I've been seeing
- 18:27a bunch of people talking about like, oh, well,
- 18:29is Hamilton actually washed? Or how much time
- 18:32do we need to give Hamilton to learn the car?
- 18:34And like, yeah, I get that he's a multi -time
- 18:36world champion. But we also need to remember
- 18:37that he has his entire F1 career only driven
- 18:41with Mercedes power unit. Yep. Because prior
- 18:44to Mercedes, he drove for McLaren, which was
- 18:46a Mercedes power unit. Yeah. And so. This was
- 18:50before they were, I think they were Renault before
- 18:53they were Mercedes. But during Hamilton's time,
- 18:55they were Mercedes. Always Mercedes? Yeah. Okay.
- 18:57So he has literally only ever driven for a Mercedes
- 19:00power unit. So this is very different for him.
- 19:02So there's going to be some adjusting. I think
- 19:06it's fine. He's still picking up points. He's
- 19:07still doing a pretty good job. And he would have
- 19:09held sixth if it weren't for the fact that the
- 19:12car ahead of him had newer tires. Yep. And we'll
- 19:16talk about that once we get there. We'll talk
- 19:18about that very shortly. And I'm so excited to
- 19:19talk about it. Talk about that very shortly.
- 19:21Mercedes, Russell in fourth. Good placement for
- 19:25Mercedes. Very acceptable where they need to
- 19:27be, unfortunately. uh a more bad luck for them
- 19:32as well with antony you know his car exploding
- 19:34um not much else to say about mercedes clean
- 19:36race out there until the very end where he had
- 19:38that bit with uh max but i think kimmy was up
- 19:41in the points wasn't he using like eighth or
- 19:43something like that he was yeah i mean he was
- 19:45he was definitely competing so he was in the
- 19:46points which is like he started in pretty good
- 19:49show yeah he started in what is 10th 9th 8th
- 19:517th he started sixth sure yeah so i think he
- 19:54might have dropped positions but like c 'est
- 19:56la vie like it's he's still in the points and
- 20:00then his car exploded yeah um i mean if we're
- 20:03going in order of the finishing grid do you know
- 20:05who's next yes and this is just so everyone in
- 20:08case you haven't watched it you should watch
- 20:09it at least watch the first two laps and then
- 20:11the last five um yeah and then maybe maybe catch
- 20:15the highlights highlights i think highlights
- 20:17do well for you um hulkenberg and that's hulkenberg
- 20:21in a kick salber in fifth place before you go
- 20:26off There was a question you asked me after one
- 20:29of our recording nights. You said, if Hulkenberg
- 20:31was in a better car, would he consistently be
- 20:34competing for podiums? And I said, I don't think
- 20:36so. Yep. I'm not going to lie. This kind of turned
- 20:40me around a little bit. He's been so good. Like,
- 20:42ever since he came back, like, this is his third
- 20:46season back, right? Ever since he's come back,
- 20:47entirely different driver. Entirely different.
- 20:51The way he's been racing has been masterclass,
- 20:53given the... fact that he's driving boats yeah
- 20:55like a haas the the 2023 haas the 2024 haas obviously
- 21:00was better and we saw him consistently scoring
- 21:02points and consistently fighting his way up and
- 21:05like just great performances and now in a sauber
- 21:07um the first fifth place finish for sauber since
- 21:12i think i heard like like i think it was like
- 21:142008 So it's been a long time since Sauber has
- 21:21been this high up and he got them there. And
- 21:23it was mostly due to merit because I remember
- 21:27halfway through the race looking down and commenting,
- 21:30is that Nico Hulkenberg in 10th? Are we going
- 21:34to see a Sauber in points? What is happening?
- 21:38And then he just kept climbing and climbing and
- 21:41climbing. And then there's the infamous clip
- 21:43of him overtaking Lewis Hamilton on the last
- 21:46lap. which is crazy. I literally stood up out
- 21:52of my chair cheering when I saw him overtake
- 21:55Lewis. I was so excited. I watched it late because
- 21:58I was out of town, but I was on voice chat with
- 22:02you, and there was just a moment where I was
- 22:03like, Hulkenberg? I don't think I was watching
- 22:06the whole race, but he was slowly making his
- 22:09way. All of a sudden, you're like, wait, is that?
- 22:10And he started 15th. Yeah. It was a crazy drive.
- 22:15It was an insane drive. And yet somehow he didn't
- 22:18get driver of the day. No, Max did. And then
- 22:20Max got demoted to 10th, which was like, it's
- 22:24funny because I think if he didn't, if he didn't
- 22:26have that penalty, I probably would have understood
- 22:27more. But like, you know, voting was so late
- 22:30and the crash was so late. Everyone. Yeah. Well,
- 22:32by the time voting had ended, by the time that
- 22:34the. this the no voting ends on like the last
- 22:37like at the last lap did it it does yeah but
- 22:40like but like it was like i mean most votes are
- 22:42at that point yeah um he would need like a whole
- 22:45another country to start voting i was talking
- 22:48to uh our mutual friend about this and like uh
- 22:52him and i were talking about it and he's like
- 22:54oh well you know max was having a great race
- 22:55though up to that point and i was like yeah but
- 22:57max didn't drive 15th to 6th which then obviously
- 23:01Nico got promoted to fifth because of Max's penalty,
- 23:04but still. that's still six i would be just as
- 23:08astonished at sixth yeah that's crazy yeah it's
- 23:12a insane insane race for hulkenberg and sauber
- 23:16it puts them i mean still not high it puts them
- 23:18in eighth but they're level with aston martin
- 23:21they're above alpine and they're 10 points from
- 23:23haas right now like right i mean more points
- 23:26they had last year right and the year before
- 23:28i think i think together yeah so uh yeah it's
- 23:31uh so uh before i kind of yeah so i mean like
- 23:34anything else just his race that you want to
- 23:36kind of call out other other quick thing that
- 23:38i did want to talk about from sauber yeah so
- 23:40this race or actually i think it was the race
- 23:42before i think they might have brought it to
- 23:44monaco but over since coming to europe cake sauber
- 23:47brought a huge upgrade i want to talk about this
- 23:49too yeah and they upgraded the heck out of their
- 23:52car and now we're seeing the fruits of their
- 23:55labor and i'm really curious if you think that
- 23:58this is going to be something that we're seeing
- 24:00more consistently going forward if maybe the
- 24:02sauber is picking up more points or if this is
- 24:05just a one -time fluke obviously fifth is probably
- 24:08a fluke yeah i don't think i'm gonna see him
- 24:10i'm gonna i don't think we're gonna see him get
- 24:12into fifth again bordaletto in 12th oh my gosh
- 24:15bordaletto in 12th there's a lot of l's yeah
- 24:18uh i is still not bad really good honestly qualied
- 24:21was it 15th uh he qualified yeah he qualified
- 24:27i think bordaletto started he was at the bottom
- 24:32so he kept position yeah so he kept position
- 24:35yeah which is honestly for a rookie in the worst
- 24:38car in the grid you know like that's i'd still
- 24:40i still rate it you know yeah um so back to your
- 24:44question i do not see them getting into fifth
- 24:47again unless something crazy were to happen yeah
- 24:49i think enough enough kind of chaos ish stuff
- 24:53happened in this race to allow him to get into
- 24:55that place plus he just drove an excellent race
- 24:57yeah with great strategy i i do expect them with
- 25:01this upgrade or at least i hope that they start
- 25:03fighting for the last point position yes that's
- 25:06all i can really ask from at this point is that
- 25:08one point yeah because i mean getting that enough
- 25:11times and you're you're beating teams honestly
- 25:13yeah right um oh i do also need to make sure
- 25:17that i get my jabs in on you too because i do
- 25:20believe in our first episode of the pod Where
- 25:23I had made a comment about Nico Hulkenberg scoring
- 25:25points. And you and Smelty... God, I wish Smelty
- 25:27were here. Smelty, you're going to hear this.
- 25:31That you guys both looked at me like I was...
- 25:33crazy because i said nico hulkenberg was gonna
- 25:35score points this season and i was like i think
- 25:37he'll score some points and then he scored points
- 25:39in the first race and you guys were like it's
- 25:40a fluke he won't do it again and here he is in
- 25:43fifth i think we need to get a replay i don't
- 25:45think we said he was we were he wasn't gonna
- 25:47score points run it back i didn't i didn't think
- 25:49we said he was gonna not score points i just
- 25:51think we thought it was crazy for i think you
- 25:53said consistently score points no no i just said
- 25:56he's gonna score a few points across the season
- 25:57listen if i'm wrong i'm wrong and i'll eat my
- 25:59words now but i i don't it doesn't sound like
- 26:02me to say he wouldn't score points you'll be
- 26:03hearing about you'll be hearing about this i'm
- 26:05gonna go back to that right i'm gonna go back
- 26:06to that pod and i'll you know i'll send you a
- 26:08letter with the former apology and i expect it
- 26:11on my desk by midnight gotcha um all right uh
- 26:15we talked about ferrari already um seventh racing
- 26:18bulls hadjar crazy this guy yeah honestly he's
- 26:22our he's kevin's favorite red bull driver i guess
- 26:24um uh he's i mean i we've said it before he's
- 26:29the best rookie out there i think i think it's
- 26:32between him and antonelli and given the fact
- 26:35that antonelli is in just an objectively better
- 26:37car like yeah Yeah, I mean, that's a good point.
- 26:41Antonelli is definitely competing, but if Antonelli
- 26:45were at Hajar's level, Antonelli would be fighting
- 26:47for podiums consistently, I feel like, with the
- 26:49racing bull in the state that it's in. It kind
- 26:52of makes you wonder. We know that the Red Bull
- 26:56is a... It's just a flawed car, right? The second
- 26:59seat is a little bit cursed. No one else can
- 27:01really drive it but Max. At some point, if Hadjar
- 27:04keeps performing like this, I know they've already
- 27:06said they're not going to swap Yuki out, but
- 27:08maybe it's worth doing once or twice. In Constructors,
- 27:12Hadjar is only 27 points behind Antonelli. How
- 27:20is he compared? That's fine. How does he compare
- 27:22to Yuki is what I'm curious. To Yuki? Where is
- 27:25Yuki? He's above Yuki. he's above yuki sunoda
- 27:29is currently in 15th with 10 points isaac kajar
- 27:32is in 9th with 21 points i can understand not
- 27:37wanting to because i wouldn't want to either
- 27:39i don't want to swap the red bull drivers anymore
- 27:41um but and i think they should seriously be considering
- 27:44for next year right no I think so. Because I
- 27:48think Red Bull's biggest problem, and we see
- 27:50them do this over and over and over again, is
- 27:52they rush their rookies into the seat. Yeah.
- 27:55And the other Red Bull seat just eats them up.
- 27:59And so we finally have a rookie that we gave
- 28:02some seasons to to grow and develop in Yuki Tsunoda,
- 28:06and then we put him in that other seat. Obviously,
- 28:08that's not working really well right now, but
- 28:10that's mostly due to the car just not being copacetic
- 28:13to the second driver. But Hajar, I think if we
- 28:17put him in that other car, he's going to have
- 28:19the exact same problems. You're probably right.
- 28:21And all it's going to do is it's just going to
- 28:22ruin his career. I think we just take some time,
- 28:24give him his experience, let him continue racing
- 28:27with racing bulls, and just build this experience
- 28:30through all these races and let him grow. We
- 28:33already see this much experience. What happens
- 28:35in three years? Give Yuki maybe two years with
- 28:39this Red Bull and let Yuki kind of skirt by.
- 28:44And if Hajar is still performing, then pull Hajar
- 28:50up. So, fundamentally, I think you're absolutely
- 28:52correct. But that's not how the Red Bull machine
- 28:55goes, baby. God, I hate that you're right. That's
- 28:58not how the Red Bull machine goes. And you know
- 29:00it, too. All right? Hajar 2026. Oh, my God, please.
- 29:04Replacing Max. Max is going to Mercedes. Oh,
- 29:07my God. Aston Martin. Max to Aston? No. I truly
- 29:11do think, though, like, I mean. I mean, I just
- 29:14feel like Red Bull and their drivers, except
- 29:15for Max, obviously, because they hit the gold
- 29:17mine with Max, right? Every single of the drivers
- 29:21just in for a painful, painful career at the
- 29:24moment. Yeah. Because you're either Liam and
- 29:26you're stuck in reserve driving until you finally
- 29:28get your shot and then you're demoted back to
- 29:30the sister team and you don't succeed. Yep. Or
- 29:34you become Hadjar and he might be in for a fate
- 29:37such as Yuki where he's just in that team forever.
- 29:40He becomes the new benchmark. Yes. Because, of
- 29:43course, then you've also got the up -and -coming
- 29:44Arvid Lindblad in F2, who is, I think, performing
- 29:47pretty well in F2. I think he's only F3 right
- 29:49now. Oh, is he in F2? I'm pretty certain he's
- 29:51in F2. He was in F3 last year. He was in F3 last
- 29:53year, yes. He had a very, very quick... He had
- 29:55an incredibly quick step. I have him in news.
- 29:57We'll talk about him for a second. Okay, awesome.
- 29:59But yeah, once again, and I saw that, and I was
- 30:01like, once again, they're a cup runneth over
- 30:02with drivers, and you're just putting yourself
- 30:05in for a bad time. So Hadjar 7th, better than
- 30:08Lawson on 11th. Again, disappointing. I don't
- 30:10really want to talk about it anymore. In 8th,
- 30:13Ghastly. Smelty? Smelty? Weird. All right, I
- 30:17guess we're moving on. In 9th, Alonso. Alonzo
- 30:24in ninth. He got points. He got points. At his
- 30:27home race. He got points at his home race. Wait,
- 30:30was it really ninth? It was ninth. Yeah. Let's
- 30:34go. That's awesome. I should have worn my Aston
- 30:36hat. Two points, right? Two points, yeah. He
- 30:38got two points. Hey, you know what? That's more
- 30:39points than I think. That is 200 % more points
- 30:42than he had across the season. Actually, that's
- 30:44not even right because he was at zero. Yeah,
- 30:46it's not right. Yeah, you're right. It's not
- 30:48right. It's not right. It's not right. So he
- 30:53pushes Aston Martin to 16 points, still getting
- 30:57beat by Kick technically because Kick had the
- 30:59bigger leap. Because Kick has had a better finish.
- 31:02Because Aston has never been up to fifth place.
- 31:05So because Kick has had the higher finish across
- 31:07the season, Kick is ahead in constructors. Yes.
- 31:09That's how they measure that. That is true. I
- 31:12think, oh, Williams, Albon with, did Albon crash
- 31:17or did he have a car issue? It's been a while.
- 31:21I thought he crashed, right? Because he took
- 31:23wind damage in lap one, didn't he? And then he
- 31:26was racing later. No, you're right. Yeah, he
- 31:30took wind damage and then he went back out and
- 31:32then took wind damage again to Lawson or something.
- 31:38I don't think he took wind damage. He took wing
- 31:40damage a second time, and then they were like,
- 31:42yeah, just retire the car. Albon picks up wing
- 31:45damage after being overtaken by Lawson. He's
- 31:47told to box to retire, but he gets a 10 -second
- 31:50penalty while he's in the box. So they send him
- 31:52out to serve that penalty, and then he retires
- 31:55directly after. I don't remember the time beforehand.
- 31:57I don't have it noted, at least. But either way,
- 32:00he had a penalty, so he just... Yeah. yeah he
- 32:08had a penalty so he you know he ended his race
- 32:11that way not a great race for williams not in
- 32:14the form that i was at least hoping that they
- 32:16would be in right um you know i wanted them to
- 32:20keep getting into the points but hey you know
- 32:23what they're still fat or sixth they're still
- 32:25sixth and pretty safe in sixth because no your
- 32:28team is right behind them what are you talking
- 32:32about no wait Williams is in fifth currently.
- 32:34Oh, Williams is in fifth. I'm sorry. They are
- 32:36pretty safely in fifth. Yes, they are pretty
- 32:38safely in fifth. Speaking of your team, though,
- 32:41they're the last that we have on here. Haas,
- 32:43what do you have to say for yourself? Why are
- 32:47you wearing that hat? i like this hat it's a
- 32:51good hat yeah it's a good hat it just it tastes
- 32:54a little sour right now yeah it was a tough trip
- 32:56it fits a little poorly it was a tough triple
- 32:59header uh life moves on i don't know we were
- 33:02they actually had commented that they were expecting
- 33:04troubles in this track so yeah not europe in
- 33:08a whole i think they're gonna they're gonna do
- 33:09well in a couple of these tracks but um yeah
- 33:12they did they did say that They were expecting
- 33:16some difficulties on this track, especially.
- 33:18So I'm not too surprised. We're still in. No,
- 33:23we are down to seventh. We fell down to seventh
- 33:25behind V -Carb. You did. Two points. Yeah. So
- 33:29that sucks. But still very doable. V -Carb really
- 33:33only has one driver that's scoring them points.
- 33:36And he's not Max Verstappen. So as long as both
- 33:40of our drivers can keep hitting points every
- 33:43now and then, there's a good chance we can. catch
- 33:45up to v -carb and reclaim ourselves in sixth
- 33:48i think i'm i'm happy enough with hoss insects
- 33:51so it is what it is i'm glad you're happy that's
- 33:56all that matters when it comes to house your
- 33:58happiness you know it's great to see them falling
- 34:00back down consistency is key yeah yeah uh that's
- 34:06bad yeah unfortunately that's all i had for the
- 34:09race any other any other tidbits you want to
- 34:11bring up for the race before we get into comms
- 34:13No, I think we can just go jump into comms. Let's
- 34:15jump into comms. Do you have any that you want
- 34:17to call out? I have four. I actually think that
- 34:19I had one. You did have one. I usually don't
- 34:22keep track of comms. I do. Ever since we started
- 34:25this, I've started keeping track of them because
- 34:26I love them. They're just really good this year.
- 34:29I'm sure they've always been good. It was the
- 34:30comment between Max and GP. Yes. Max, driving
- 34:36out of the pit, said, Now, what the... explorative
- 34:41are these tires and gb came back and said uh
- 34:44so these are hards max That's good. And I just,
- 34:49man, I love how sassy GP is. He is so freaking
- 34:52funny. I remember the point, I think it was before
- 34:56last year, where he was his race engineer, and
- 34:59he was very calm and collected. And last year,
- 35:01he was like, I'm not putting up with anything.
- 35:03Yeah, I'm done getting bullied. Yeah, it's like
- 35:05during the winter, they just had a really bro
- 35:07connection, like a bro moment. He's like, I'm
- 35:10just going to say my mind. Or maybe Max was like,
- 35:12yeah, just say your mind on the radio. I can
- 35:14take it. They probably got really drunk together.
- 35:16Maybe. are we just making like fiction fiction
- 35:20stories yeah yeah i'm okay with this yeah yeah
- 35:25my fanfic um yeah big gp and max just hanging
- 35:30out just hanging out um okay uh i have a couple
- 35:34of them lap three uh this is after uh george
- 35:38had some struggles behind some people these explicitives
- 35:41are moving out of breaking today what is going
- 35:43on toto got onto the horn right after and said
- 35:45george concentrate george concentrate yep lap
- 35:4933 we had a max quote uh this was in reference
- 35:53to a quote he said last weekend on the weekend
- 35:56beforehand rather uh max it's again like i have
- 35:59no clutch while upshifting uh gp responds 1973
- 36:02max yeah maybe 74 now i love their banter it's
- 36:08so funny it's really really good when they're
- 36:10not arguing with each other like you know domesticated
- 36:13couple yeah that's funny because Most times you
- 36:15hear like the driver just pushes their engineer
- 36:17around, but GP just doesn't take it. Yep. Yeah,
- 36:20no. And then I have, I had the one that you had
- 36:24about max on that 55. The last one I have is
- 36:27Hamilton during the safety car. And he's, he's
- 36:30mentioned this before. In reference to the safety
- 36:33car, they do love wasting laps waiting for it
- 36:36to end. That was pretty funny. I've seen him
- 36:38a couple times get a little irritated with the
- 36:40safety car staying out too long. Speaking, you
- 36:43jogged my brain since you brought up Lewis. Did
- 36:46you see the post -race interviews at all? I watched
- 36:50a couple for the Max incident. Right, of course.
- 36:54I did not watch. the others though okay so lewis
- 36:58went up like um they're like right after the
- 37:01race they're just standing right outside the
- 37:02pit whatever and they talk to a commentator share
- 37:04a few words and then they go on their way right
- 37:05yeah um They went and talked to Lewis, and they
- 37:08tried talking to him, and I think that was the
- 37:10coldest, least interested, just very clearly.
- 37:14He was dejected. I do remember this now. And
- 37:16just kind of upset. And he was like, yeah, I
- 37:19don't want to talk about it. Goodbye. He was
- 37:21like, yeah, what do you want to say? It wasn't
- 37:24a good race. I'm not in a good mood. That's it.
- 37:26It was a bad day. I was like, wow. I mean, I
- 37:31would probably be a little upset, too, if I got
- 37:33overtaken by a Sauber. but yeah yeah finishing
- 37:38six yeah i mean if you're lewis hamilton i guess
- 37:40six really is never good enough no fifth isn't
- 37:43good enough fourth isn't good especially with
- 37:45all of the pressure on him from like moving to
- 37:47ferrari and like yeah yeah so yeah i just saw
- 37:51that i thought that was interesting i was gonna
- 37:53bring that up too because i was like i was like
- 37:55man what is going on with lewis he's got a little
- 37:59bit of an attitude right now yeah i think that's
- 38:01all we had for the spain uh you know It's a hard
- 38:05track to overtake on, but I love it. I'm really
- 38:09happy they're not replacing it next year. Same.
- 38:11That is confirmed now. We do have Barcelona coming
- 38:13back next year. Yes, we have Spain next year.
- 38:15I do have the calendar on our news segment, which
- 38:17is coming up next. We will talk about it. But
- 38:19very happy that we keep... spain i think i mentioned
- 38:23this before on the game probably the best track
- 38:25for me at least i love i love spain um so happy
- 38:28to see that's coming back um hopefully we'll
- 38:30get a bit more or we'll get um the same level
- 38:33at least of excitement that we got this year
- 38:35yeah maybe spread out a little bit during the
- 38:38race but i overall can't complain especially
- 38:40after monaco can't complain i don't know i felt
- 38:42like the race overall was enjoying i didn't i
- 38:44enjoyed it yeah it was my favorite out of the
- 38:47triple header i think so yeah yeah i would agree
- 38:50All right. With that, Kev, let's get into news.
- 39:00All right. Banter with the Boys does F1 news.
- 39:11I don't know. Well, we're getting into news now.
- 39:13That was my Ron Burgundy. I'm Ron Burgundy. I'm
- 39:16Ron Burgundy. First, first little tidbit here.
- 39:20I have this is your words, maybe Canada. And
- 39:24that's I think that's what kind of got me on
- 39:26this little question mark thing. News. Yeah,
- 39:30that's funny. Yeah. So I think you were hearing
- 39:33some similar stuff. So there is a very real possibility
- 39:38that we might not even be racing in Canada this
- 39:41weekend. There are a lot of wildfires going on
- 39:43in the Montreal area, and it is getting really
- 39:46close to Montreal to the point that it is reducing
- 39:49visibility and air quality. I saw photos of the
- 39:53track. It's already there. Yeah, it's pretty
- 39:55bad. And in fact, the Montreal area is currently
- 39:59listed as the worst air quality in the world.
- 40:02And so there's concerns about safety for the
- 40:06drivers and the pit crew as well as with visibility
- 40:09and just how well it's going to show on TV if
- 40:13everything is smoky and hazy. How good is it
- 40:16going to look? Is it even worth it? And then
- 40:19there's all the particulates in the air from
- 40:21everything burning around them. um that could
- 40:25potentially damage the vehicles these vehicles
- 40:27that are so sensitive in dirty air and now everything
- 40:31is dirty air yep so yeah i don't know it's uh
- 40:35it's interesting really good weather it's obviously
- 40:38it's not good it's really bad it's really bad
- 40:41obviously it's horrible uh we get affected by
- 40:44it we don't obviously we're not crushed we're
- 40:47not devastated by it but we see the smoke we're
- 40:49local minnesotans so we see the smoke climb down
- 40:53from canada quite often yep um it would what
- 40:56i was trying to say was like make would make
- 40:58really good photos when they're at the track
- 41:00but you're right it might not make good racing
- 41:02i'm just imagining poorly cropped pictures of
- 41:05lewis hamilton passing max with fire behind him
- 41:08i see i imagine different i'm imagining it's
- 41:10just like a slate of like or either a wall of
- 41:12smoke and then a mclaren just yeah It looks sick,
- 41:16but yeah, probably dangerous. So we should hear
- 41:19soon if it's canceled. I mean, I haven't seen
- 41:22anything official, right? So far, business as
- 41:27usual. So speaking of Canada, our Canadian stroll,
- 41:32has that been confirmed that he will be there?
- 41:35Has that confirmed that he will not yet? If he's
- 41:37not, who takes over for him? um yeah so uh deo
- 41:42porcher is driving in le mans he is he has stated
- 41:45that's happening that's happening the same weekend
- 41:47yep same weekend yep and deo porcher will be
- 41:49racing in le mans so he will not be available
- 41:51as their reserve driver so their other option
- 41:55Valtteri Bottas is accessible to every Mercedes
- 41:57works team as a reserve driver. I'd love to see
- 42:00him get back on track. We could get to see Valtteri
- 42:02Bottas. I want to see him get back on track and
- 42:04score the most points Aston Martin has seen this
- 42:07year. There has been some rumblings that Lance
- 42:10could just be coming back. Oh yeah, totally.
- 42:13And I think that's a bad idea. Not just for like,
- 42:17like as a Lance hater. Lance is worried if they
- 42:22put in a reserve driver in his place, he's going
- 42:25to keep the reserve driver. Well, no, not Lance.
- 42:28I think Aston is probably a little concerned
- 42:31about the optics of what happens if they do replace
- 42:34Lance for a race. And reserve driver turns out
- 42:38to do really, really good. He puts himself in
- 42:41fifth. And then what happens? Then how are they
- 42:44going to fight off all of the people who are
- 42:45trying to claim that Lance needs to get out and
- 42:47that he's holding the team back? In my opinion,
- 42:51they're fighting that all the time already. I
- 42:53don't think it's going to matter. It's not going
- 42:54to change anything. They don't address it ever,
- 42:56right? I mean, yes, but we as viewers and fans
- 43:01don't have benchmarks that we can directly take
- 43:03because we can only trust their benchmarks that
- 43:05they give us from their data. But if we see Valtteri
- 43:09Bottas get in that car and put up fast laps and
- 43:14really, really send it, then like... I mean...
- 43:20At that point, you should be more worried for
- 43:22Alonzo, probably. No, I don't think so. I mean,
- 43:27Stroll is the owner of the team, right? Yes,
- 43:33and he is still the major owner, but he doesn't
- 43:36have as much authority as he used to between
- 43:38Adrian Newey being a partial owner as well as
- 43:41the team being partially bought out by Saudi.
- 43:46uh so saudi's got a pretty large stake in the
- 43:48team now as well and so a lot of lance's or lawrence's
- 43:52like power that he has over the team is waning
- 43:55and so it's waning but i mean i don't think stroll's
- 44:00going anywhere i don't either I think it's heavy.
- 44:03It's probably heavy in Lawrence's contract that
- 44:05my son drives his car until he doesn't want to.
- 44:09Right. Yeah. I think my other big thing is I
- 44:12think they shouldn't put him in, not because
- 44:15I don't want Lance there. Because he should recover.
- 44:18But, yeah, it's because he should recover. Like,
- 44:20Lawrence, you watch our show. I know you do.
- 44:23It's his favorite show. It's his favorite show,
- 44:25obviously. Just give your son the time to heal.
- 44:29As a father, you should want your son to heal.
- 44:32Don't force him into the car any sooner than
- 44:34you have to. Force him to injure his wrist any
- 44:37worse. If he goes back too soon after a surgery
- 44:41and gets in an F1 car, he could ruin his wrist
- 44:44even more, and it could affect him for the rest
- 44:46of his life. So just give him time to recover.
- 44:49Like Danny Ricardo, give him some time. Let him
- 44:52come back. Who cares? And then give Dale Porcher
- 44:56some time to actually drive an F1 car. And then
- 44:59hopefully go to Cadillac. Dale Porcher is not
- 45:02coming back to F1. I'm just going to ruin it
- 45:03for you right now. No, Dale Porcher is never
- 45:05coming to F1. He's never been here. Yeah, yeah.
- 45:08Okay, good. We're going to be like that. Yeah.
- 45:11Yeah. I agree. I think. I mean, even like all
- 45:15thoughts aside, he shouldn't race if he's still
- 45:17recovering. Yeah. I would love to see. I would
- 45:20love to see Botas in the car. They could put
- 45:23no one in the car. They could just not run. It'd
- 45:25be weird for them not to. I think there are some
- 45:28rules about needing both cars to at least qualify.
- 45:32Maybe. Well, it's a race. You have to qualify
- 45:34to race. I don't think you have to have the car
- 45:36in. I don't know. We'd have to look into that.
- 45:40I thought they had some rule about that. Maybe.
- 45:42We can look into it. Something from back a long
- 45:45time ago that they made. All right, calendar.
- 45:48So today they released the F1 calendar, and they
- 45:54did make some changes with it. More so, we're
- 45:58still kind of going all over the place here and
- 45:59there, but there are some notable differences
- 46:02that bring places together more. To call some
- 46:07out, Canada is now right after Miami. spain austria
- 46:14uk belgium hungary netherlands italy spain again
- 46:18so we had the two spains kind of on opposite
- 46:21ends of the the calendar a little bit about a
- 46:23month or so apart um yeah so it's a little bit
- 46:28more bunched up in the places that we're going
- 46:29which is good it's you know the goal yeah i think
- 46:32i mean it's it's the biggest factor to how to
- 46:34get to zero you know zero missions um So Madrid
- 46:38is replacing Imola. I don't think you loved Imola.
- 46:41Yeah, I was a big fan of Imola. I like Imola.
- 46:44I don't think it produces really great racing,
- 46:46but I like the track. So I'm a little sad to
- 46:49see that go, especially since things I've seen
- 46:51of Madrid are not promising. So I'm not like,
- 46:54we'll see though. We'll see. I won't hold it
- 46:58against it until I see it. I thought Vegas was
- 46:59going to be bad, but I actually really enjoy
- 47:01that track, too. It's a really good racing track,
- 47:04but Madrid doesn't look amazing, so we'll see
- 47:06what happens. I'm not going to run through the
- 47:09list. You guys know the only differences is that
- 47:12Imola's gone, Madrid replaces it, and then some
- 47:15changes here and there in terms of the order.
- 47:17I know. Basically, we're going Australia to the
- 47:22Middle East. do a couple races there, and then
- 47:25we're going to America, right? Go Australia,
- 47:29China, Japan, and then the Middle East. That's
- 47:32right. Yeah, I forgot about Asia. So we go hit
- 47:35those Asian nations, and then we come to America,
- 47:37do those races, and then we go to Europe, and
- 47:41we're knocking all of our European races out
- 47:43in one fell swoop. And then we, I think, come
- 47:49back to the United States for... for what coda
- 47:55mexico vegas and then back to the middle east
- 47:59after we go to baku so we go to madrid and then
- 48:03we're at baku and then we go to singapore and
- 48:07then we're in austin mexico brazil vegas qatar
- 48:11and then abu dhabi right okay Generally, we're
- 48:16trying to keep things in the same area. Which
- 48:18is how it should be. And I know there's a lot
- 48:20of European fans that are very excited because
- 48:22it means that all of the European races are all
- 48:25happening clumped up together and everything
- 48:27like that. I'd be okay if our three US races
- 48:30happened all at the same time. Yeah, I'm cool.
- 48:31I'm fine with that. That sounds great to me.
- 48:33Just to Canada in there. Yeah, why not? Canada's
- 48:35really early. I guess it's May 22nd. But that's
- 48:41May 22nd in Montreal. It's a bit north. We can
- 48:45get snow and stuff. A bit cold. Just imagine
- 48:51that we're out here and these guys are having
- 48:54to go race in like 40 degree temperatures. It's
- 49:00a real possibility. I mean, we're getting...
- 49:03It's June 10th and we still get our mid -50 days.
- 49:08If my math is right, that's like 4 or 5 degrees
- 49:10Celsius for our European fans. That's pretty
- 49:14darn cold. Sound off in the comments, European
- 49:15fans. Yeah, sound off in the comments. Yeah.
- 49:21Wow, that was crazy. You were spot on. We just
- 49:25did a quick fact checking. I was pretty good
- 49:27with my Celsius calculations. That was really
- 49:28good. Right. Our last bit of news, Arvid Lindbald.
- 49:37Lindblad? Arvid Lindblad. Okay, I misspelled
- 49:40it here. We'll get it. I said Lindbald. I'm so
- 49:42sorry. Arvid Lindblad. What do you know about
- 49:47him? I mean, from what I've read, he was, like,
- 49:50carding. As early as 2021, he was in carding.
- 49:54And then he jumped into F4. And then he was immediately
- 49:57placed in F3. Yep. And now he's in F2 as of right
- 50:01now. He is Helmut Marko's prayer for Max Verstappen
- 50:06to Electric Boogaloo. He's been making big, big
- 50:11steps forward. making a big name for himself.
- 50:14And yeah, we're just really hoping that he's
- 50:17going to be the next generational talent, which
- 50:21I guess I hold out reservations on. I did the
- 50:25same thing with Kimmy when he came in. Everybody
- 50:27was like, he's just the Italian Max Verstappen.
- 50:29And I was like, yeah, okay, whatever. Show me
- 50:33some results. So I'll do the same with Arvid.
- 50:37you know we'll see it happens yeah i'm assuming
- 50:40we'll see him in f1 at least within the next
- 50:42two years yeah i did read that the f the f i
- 50:45did just approve him to race in f1 and he's only
- 50:4717 currently correct yep um it could happen it
- 50:51was it's been a really really quick turnaround
- 50:53time for him though so yeah which is just like
- 50:56man just get the get the kids some time to practice
- 50:59man yeah i don't know about enough about max
- 51:01to know if maybe if he had a very similar kind
- 51:04of uh pathway where he was just like i don't
- 51:08think he went from carding to f1 within three
- 51:10years but like i don't think so no um yeah it's
- 51:14crazy but he definitely did move up fast but
- 51:17i think he went through all the normal channels
- 51:19it was just like he would spend one year in a
- 51:20season he was yeah and like he was carding and
- 51:23then he finally got to formula i think he might
- 51:24have even skipped formula 4 i think he went straight
- 51:26to formula 3 i thought i read that he was in
- 51:28formula 4 but i could be he wasn't i don't know
- 51:30i'm like you i don't really follow max very much
- 51:35He was in 2022. So coming mid -2022. So Lindblad
- 51:41signed to the Red Bull Junior Program in 2021.
- 51:46Still racing karts recently is 2022. He rose
- 51:50sharp since then. Coming mid -2022, he stepped
- 51:53up to Formula Racing by taking part in a host
- 51:55of Formula 4 series. And then 2023, taking part
- 51:59in Italian UAE Euro Series before taking part
- 52:02in the Formula 1 edition of the Macau Grand Prix.
- 52:05And then he was placed in Formula 3 as a 16 -year
- 52:10-old in 2024. So he's in F2 right now? I believe
- 52:15he's in F2. Okay. Yeah, he's... He's zooming.
- 52:20Yes. He was promoted to F2 for the 2025 season.
- 52:23Yeah, and I believe they moved him up to... so
- 52:26that he could acquire the necessary super license
- 52:30points to be able to race in Formula One as soon
- 52:35as possible because Helmut Marko cannot choose
- 52:38one child. He's already listed as a test driver
- 52:41for Racing Bulls. He took part in his maiden
- 52:46F1 test in Imola in February, driving the 2020
- 52:50Alfatari. He got points very early on in F2.
- 52:55Yeah, he's making moves. He's on the right direction.
- 52:59Unfortunately, he's part of the Red Bull program,
- 53:00so wait for a seat to open. Doomed to fail. Yeah.
- 53:04So I did go check it out because this was bothering
- 53:06me. Max did jump straight to Formula 3. Okay.
- 53:09So, yeah, Max went from junior division straight
- 53:15to Formula 3, did a season in F3, a season in
- 53:17F2, and then went from F2 straight to... Toro
- 53:21Rosso. Sounds right. We know where the rest goes
- 53:23from there. Yeah, we sure do. Sounds right. All
- 53:25right. Well, we'll keep an eye out for him. The
- 53:27next Isaac Hadjar, possibly the next Max Verstappen.
- 53:29He's doomed to stay a test driver for the length
- 53:33of forever. Oh, that was a thought that I had
- 53:35earlier. He brought up. He could kick Liam. He
- 53:37brought up. I mean, probably kick Liam. That
- 53:41was a thought that I had earlier was a comparison
- 53:45of Isaac Hadjar and how well he's doing. I don't
- 53:49view Isaac Hajar necessarily as a future world
- 53:54champion, per se. It's still a little early to
- 53:56say. And I don't like arguing that sort of stuff
- 53:59in somebody in their first season. But the way
- 54:03he holds himself and the way that he races, the
- 54:07closest analogy I see to him as a driver is I
- 54:10could see Hajar be the next Lando Norris. A driver
- 54:15that's really, really good. but maybe not quite
- 54:19at that same top echelon i think as somebody
- 54:22like a lewis hamilton max verstappen fernando
- 54:24alonso yeah that's fair so just like a a very
- 54:28very talented driver and like good chance we
- 54:31see him winning races in five years that'd be
- 54:34nice yeah so i i didn't know if you had any disputes
- 54:39on that or not if you feel the same but i don't
- 54:41see him yet um I agree. It's interesting. I was
- 54:45thinking about it. I don't really even see Piastri
- 54:47as a WDC. I've never seen him that way. I do
- 54:49now. I 100 % do now. I still see Norris more
- 54:53of one than Piastri, but I know Piastri is more...
- 54:56I think Piastri is more of a place to win it.
- 54:58I think Piastri will win it, actually. I agree.
- 55:01The whole reason this came up was because it
- 55:03was after the whole champion mindset with Max
- 55:06thing. I was thinking about it where I was like,
- 55:10I feel like... lando's biggest struggle he has
- 55:13because lando has incredible race craft right
- 55:15but i think lando's biggest problem is his mindset
- 55:18lando struggles with his head too much he just
- 55:20gets to he gets under his own skin too much and
- 55:22things like that and that really gets in his
- 55:24way and like when he when he isn't getting under
- 55:27his own skin and he isn't getting in his own
- 55:28head just phenomenal racing from the guy just
- 55:32top tier racing but that's that's something that
- 55:34he's still trying to get over is that that mindset
- 55:37problem that you don't see out of oscar oscar
- 55:40just gets out and just gets to work like people
- 55:43make jokes that he's a robot and like he is yeah
- 55:46i mean i like that about him though to be fair
- 55:47i do too i love oscar like so i don't know i
- 55:51see that and i i'm like i i see oscar as more
- 55:55of a world champion now than i do lando which
- 55:58feels really bad to say yeah well uh he deserves
- 56:02it Well, I'm certainly hoping to see them continue
- 56:05to rise. I think that does it for news, though.
- 56:09I think we should get into our preview. All right,
- 56:27final stretch. I'm here to bring you up to speed
- 56:29for the Canada Grand Prix. This year, the Formula
- 56:32One Pirelli Grand Prix de Canada 2025. A fun
- 56:36fact, Canada was host to the longest F1 race
- 56:40in history at four hours, four minutes, and 39
- 56:43seconds. I think I shared this last year, but
- 56:46it's such a good fun fact. That's crazy. Imagine
- 56:49a four -hour race. I think Formula One has agreements.
- 56:54with like tv sponsorships and things like that
- 56:56that they need to keep their races at like three
- 56:58hours now yeah about two hours is the preferred
- 57:01but no longer than three yeah i think like three
- 57:03is like the limit they start a countdown timer
- 57:06yeah if we're getting close to three yeah um
- 57:09Right. So our starting grid for last year was
- 57:11Russell to Verstappen, Norris to Piastri. It's
- 57:14a wet start and all cars are on inters except
- 57:17for the Haas cars who chose to start in the extreme
- 57:19wets. Lights out in the top four keep their positions.
- 57:22Russell leading Max in the front of the two McLarens
- 57:25with a gaggle of other teams following in their
- 57:28overspray. A little further down the grid off
- 57:32the first few turns, Checo makes contact with
- 57:34Gasly. Pierre getting perpendicular to the direction
- 57:37of the track and Checo bumping his way. through
- 57:39making his way through the grass still middle
- 57:41of the lap one and it seems the extreme wets
- 57:43were the correct choice for the very start of
- 57:45this race magnuson making seven places from where
- 57:48he started up to eighth before the back straight
- 57:50five places up for his teammate hulkenberg magnuson
- 57:53continues his expert wet run through the next
- 57:56lap making his way past hamilton for sixth place
- 57:58hulkenberg getting past the player for 10th at
- 58:00the end of the straight magnuson gets up to p5
- 58:02overtaking alonzo and setting his sights on piastri
- 58:06next with more grip than anyone he He reaches
- 58:08Piastri at the hairpin before the straight in
- 58:10lap three, making his way past the McLaren by
- 58:12the end of the straight. The fun ends for Haas
- 58:14about five laps later as the sun is shining and
- 58:16their tires become suboptimal. They pit for inters
- 58:18and get back on track after making over 10 places
- 58:20each. Unfortunately for K -Mag, he is an incredibly
- 58:23slow pit, getting the inters on, knocking off
- 58:258 .6 seconds while stationary. All right, this
- 58:31is a long paragraph. You have to bear with me.
- 58:33We cut to the battle for second between Lando
- 58:35and Verstappen on lap 20. Lando slotted behind
- 58:38Max on the back straight and making his way around
- 58:40the Dutchman before they turn into the starting
- 58:42line. Lando doesn't stop there, and he sets his
- 58:45sights on Russell, overtaking him for first position
- 58:48at the same corner he took Max a lap before.
- 58:51Russell breaks a little too late and has to take
- 58:53the runoff area at that corner, comes back out
- 58:55on the second behind Norris, now severely under
- 58:57pressure from Max, who overtakes him almost.
- 59:00instantly through the starting straight we cut
- 59:02to four laps later piastri thinking about making
- 59:04some similar moves on russell right as they run
- 59:05into a yellow flag caused by the williams of
- 59:07sergeant turn the wrong way on track after spinning
- 59:11and hitting the barrier he brings out the safety
- 59:13card before retiring and gives opportunity for
- 59:15stappen russell and piastri to pit norris already
- 59:17having passed the pit lane norris gets himself
- 59:20in the pit lane on the next lap but loses a first
- 59:22and second position doing so slotting right ahead
- 59:24of his teammate on racer zoo most everyone pitted
- 59:27for newer enters before the green flag on lap
- 59:2930. Everyone except Charles who opted to go for
- 59:32the slicks. We watched with bated breath to see
- 59:34if he was too early. He was way too early. Already
- 59:38in 19th, he starts falling further behind and
- 59:40he ends up retiring at some point between 30
- 59:42and 45. On lap 45, we watched as the last three
- 59:46cars on enters Verstappen, Russell, and Norris
- 59:48in a 1 -2 -3 go for their pit strategies. Verstappen
- 59:51and Russell box at the end of the straight, but
- 59:53Russell decides to hold out for, sorry, Norris
- 59:55decides to hold out for one lap longer, hoping
- 59:57to get the over. Overcutting the two ahead. At
- 59:59the end of this lap, he pits. And while coming
- 1:00:02out of the pits, he slips a little bit on his
- 1:00:04mediums and unfortunately gets beaten out on
- 1:00:06the undercut by Verstappen. If it were just a
- 1:00:08little bit drier and his tires were a little
- 1:00:09bit warmer, North sort of perfected the overcut.
- 1:00:1249, Lando has a lockup at the hairpin before
- 1:00:14the straight, giving Russell an opportunity to
- 1:00:16overtake in the straight, which he makes. Only
- 1:00:18two laps later, Russell has a moment in the S's
- 1:00:20mid -track, giving Lando advantage, who takes
- 1:00:22second position back. Perez brings out the yellow
- 1:00:25flag a lap or two later after destroying his
- 1:00:27back wing, limping his way back to the pit. This
- 1:00:30is when he limped his way back to the pit, got
- 1:00:32a penalty, came out a couple laps later to serve
- 1:00:34that penalty, and then went back into the garage.
- 1:00:35I hated that. I hated that they were able to
- 1:00:38do that. But besides the point. flipping his
- 1:00:41way back to the pit just as signs loses grip
- 1:00:43on the same corner as Perez and he spins collecting
- 1:00:46Albon by bashing into his back right Albon unfortunately
- 1:00:49finding himself embedded into the wall ending
- 1:00:51Williams race as a whole both Mercedes opt to
- 1:00:55pit for brand new medium sitting in fourth and
- 1:00:57fifth the two McLarens and Max leading the pack
- 1:00:59all on all on 10 plus lapped tires Piastri and
- 1:01:03Russell have a kerfuffle at the end of the back
- 1:01:05straight making contact with each other and sending
- 1:01:07Russell through the runoff again where he loses
- 1:01:09position to Hamill effectively swapping them
- 1:01:12Hamilton has a go at Piastri next lap and he
- 1:01:14is able to make the move stick putting himself
- 1:01:16in the final podium position Russell makes the
- 1:01:18move stick on Piastri a lap or two later Russell
- 1:01:21seeks vengeance and on lap 68 he finds it overtaking
- 1:01:24his teammate Hamilton for the final podium position
- 1:01:26at the end of the race after giving permission
- 1:01:27to fight two laps later the hectic Canadian Grand
- 1:01:30Prix ends with Max crossing the line first followed
- 1:01:32by Lando and George our final 10 Verstappen to
- 1:01:35Norris Russell to Hamilton Piastri to Alonso
- 1:01:38Stroll ricardo ghastly 2 ocon crazy Yeah, I was
- 1:01:44not expecting to have to write such a long recap
- 1:01:46for that race. I do not remember it being that
- 1:01:49crazy. I completely forgot about the Haas at
- 1:01:51the start. Unfortunately, it ended 11th and 12th.
- 1:01:53It did not pay off, but they were still not in
- 1:01:56a good car at that point. Probably would have
- 1:01:58paid off had they not had an eight -second pit
- 1:02:00for Kevin. Yeah. I remember getting so excited.
- 1:02:05God, it was such a roller coaster. I was so excited
- 1:02:07at the start of that. I was like, holy crap,
- 1:02:09do you see Kevin Magnuson? Oh, this is amazing.
- 1:02:12And then it was an eight. second pit and i was
- 1:02:13like i'm taking my hat off like oh no i'm sad
- 1:02:19and i just watched them limp home yeah it was
- 1:02:24i mean it was a really good start it was really
- 1:02:27fun seeing haas just like cruise up front i think
- 1:02:30we were both cheering a bit like that was crazy
- 1:02:32and then he had that pit and it was all lost
- 1:02:34we were like ah dang it nice while it lasted
- 1:02:37right um so let's get into predictions shall
- 1:02:40we and then we'll wrap this baby up um let me
- 1:02:43go ahead and pull up our predictions here i just
- 1:02:45had to log back in because i got kicked out mid
- 1:02:47-podcast i don't even remember how many points
- 1:02:50i got over so uh this last weekend the two weekends
- 1:02:55ago rather um uh smeltsy once again once again
- 1:02:58stumbling into something great uh uh actually
- 1:03:02he actually had a fairly normal a fairly normal
- 1:03:05um podium he had oscar lando and george um gaining
- 1:03:10himself four points i had lando to oscar to charles
- 1:03:14gaining myself four points and you had max to
- 1:03:16lando to oscar gaining yourself three points
- 1:03:18which brings us uh smelty with 25 and then you
- 1:03:22and i tied 24 so because smelty is ahead however
- 1:03:28he is Kev, do you have his predictions? All right.
- 1:03:33Let's go ahead and lay him out for the Canada
- 1:03:36Grand Prix. In this order, Oscar, Max, George.
- 1:03:39Oscar in first, Max in second, George in third.
- 1:03:44No Lando on the podium. I'm not surprised. I'm
- 1:03:47not surprised at all. I guess so. I mean, I smell
- 1:03:50tea. Oscar, wait, he said Oscar, Max, George.
- 1:03:55Okay, yeah, I was going to say, there's no George,
- 1:03:57and then I was like, oh, no, there's a George
- 1:03:59Russell. How do we choose who goes next? Should
- 1:04:04we rock, paper, scissors? Do we want to do it
- 1:04:06fun? We'll each give each other our three. I'm
- 1:04:10trying to think. Technically, we both made the
- 1:04:12same amount of points getting up. We're tied
- 1:04:14right now, so we'll go at the same time. We'll
- 1:04:16go at the same time? Who's in third? We want
- 1:04:19to say it at the same time. Not at the same time.
- 1:04:22You'll do your third. I'll do my second. Lock
- 1:04:24in your third. Is it locked in? This is stupid.
- 1:04:30I'm running the calculations in my brain. My
- 1:04:32third is locked. My foresight is crazy right
- 1:04:35now. Okay, I'm good. All right, ready? Okay,
- 1:04:41third? Yeah. Who says it first? I can go first.
- 1:04:44I'll just go first. I'll say it right after you.
- 1:04:46Yeah, so my first. Your third. Your third. Sorry,
- 1:04:49my third. My third. Max Verstappen. Max Verstappen.
- 1:04:52Okay, well, this is boring. Yeah, this sucks.
- 1:04:54I hate this. Why did we do this? Why did we do
- 1:04:56this? All right, I'll say my second, and then
- 1:04:58you'll say your second. Ready? I think it's actually
- 1:05:00going to be different. I do think, I think we're
- 1:05:02going to have the same top two, but I think they're
- 1:05:04going to be reverse order. You think so? Yeah.
- 1:05:05Who says I'm going to have a McLaren? Good one.
- 1:05:08Charles McLaren. Good one. Second is Oscar Piastri.
- 1:05:12Lando Norris. Yep. So it's going to be, and then
- 1:05:14your first is. Obviously. Yeah. Okay. So mine
- 1:05:16is Lando Oscar Max. Yours is Oscar Lando Max.
- 1:05:25Ooh, we're breaking the mold here. Yeah, it's
- 1:05:29like this is just the same. I mean, God, these
- 1:05:32McLarens are so good. I will say I am very interested.
- 1:05:34Part of me was really, what I was really kicking
- 1:05:36around is how I brought up earlier the fact that,
- 1:05:40you know, Montreal is on fire. Yep. And there's
- 1:05:44a lot of talk about dirty air. The entire track
- 1:05:46is dirty air. And how poorly these McLarens handled
- 1:05:50in dirty air. So that could seriously affect
- 1:05:53the McLarens. Granted, yes, it is dirty air.
- 1:05:56It's not the same kind of dirty air that they
- 1:05:57experience. I think every car is going to be
- 1:05:59suffering if they have to drive in it. And I
- 1:06:01think McLaren will still get on top. I do too.
- 1:06:04Not that I have to defend myself. But Lando was
- 1:06:07obviously the fastest person last year. And he
- 1:06:09just got caught out, unfortunately. He got caught
- 1:06:12out. out but he also it was bad strategy kind
- 1:06:15of it was like it was just tough strategy i'll
- 1:06:18say he got caught out by the safety car and then
- 1:06:21you know he had a you know it was a really wet
- 1:06:23line out but lando was obviously fastest that
- 1:06:27being said oscars had a crazy year crazy crazy
- 1:06:30year and i could 100 see him getting first instead
- 1:06:33right i feel kind of the same like if lando were
- 1:06:35to get first i'd be like yeah that makes sense
- 1:06:36i mean he's super fast on this track and like
- 1:06:39he showed his pace last year i just feel like
- 1:06:41i just feel like every time i pick oscar it's
- 1:06:43lando and i'm like i gotta get one lando right
- 1:06:45you know yeah you gotta just keep sending lando
- 1:06:47in a eventually you'll get it yeah every single
- 1:06:50time i haven't gotten lando once i've gotten
- 1:06:54oscar a couple times but every time i put lando
- 1:06:56up there it's always someone different and then
- 1:06:58i put oscar up there and then it's lando and
- 1:07:00i'm like what are you doing to me what are you
- 1:07:01doing uh so yeah um natural order of things you're
- 1:07:05right it was lando uh in Monaco. There's Oscar
- 1:07:09in Spain. It's time for Lando again. It'll probably
- 1:07:12be next. It'll be Oscar again. Yeah. All right.
- 1:07:15So there's our podium. Any final thoughts before
- 1:07:18we... Actually, I do have one more. Yeah. Actually,
- 1:07:20Kevin, if you... Because I don't think you've
- 1:07:22seen this yet. Kevin, if you can put this up
- 1:07:23on the screen for us. I totally forgot to bring
- 1:07:26this up in news. It's Haas' 200th Wraith. Wraith.
- 1:07:30200th Wraith. Ooh, a lith. And they've got a
- 1:07:32special livery. Do they really? Yeah, and it's
- 1:07:35a throwback to their first livery, which is so
- 1:07:39good. There should be the F1 website. Oh, yeah,
- 1:07:41that's perfect. Yeah, that is going to be their
- 1:07:45special livery. They're going back to their original.
- 1:07:50their original livery oh yeah and it is that's
- 1:07:54good it looks so good the big haas on the side
- 1:07:57that's very good the the coloring around the
- 1:07:59letters and everything they've got their italicized
- 1:08:01numbers on the cars and and the colors are the
- 1:08:04same the silver black and kind of like that red
- 1:08:07orange kind of color i'm into it i'm very much
- 1:08:10into it i really like haas's livery now but i
- 1:08:13do love when When they all mix it up a little
- 1:08:15bit. I do too. And it's really nice to see this
- 1:08:18livery come back reminiscent of their first ever
- 1:08:20race. They should have done that. What was that
- 1:08:22energy drink? They should have brought that livery
- 1:08:25back. The black and gold. It was a good look.
- 1:08:28They kept the livery for a while.
