- 0:00The Bhagwad Gita describes the lower nature and the higher
- 0:04nature. The lower nature is the external
- 0:07manifestation of forms, matter, life, energy, mind that together
- 0:13constitute the creation and all the multiplicity of formations
- 0:18that together represent the external world.
- 0:22This can be seen as a type of machinery.
- 0:25It operates mechanically, so to speak, but does not show any
- 0:30apparent purpose or significance in its action beyond the fact of
- 0:35that action. In Chapter 7, verses 4 to 5, the
- 0:41Gita declares quote the five elements conditions of material
- 0:46being mined with its various senses and organs.
- 0:51Reason, Ego. This is my eightfold divided
- 0:55nature. This the lower, but know my
- 0:59other nature different from this, the Supreme, which becomes
- 1:03the jiva and by which this world is upheld.
- 1:07End Quote translation by Sri Aurobindo.
- 1:10Bhagwad Gita and its message Sri Aurobindo explains quote.
- 1:16The Supreme Nature, Para Prakritihi, is then the infinite
- 1:22timeless conscious power of the Self existent Being, out of
- 1:27which all existences in the cosmos are manifested and come
- 1:33out of timelessness into time. But in order to provide a
- 1:37spiritual basis for this manifold universal becoming in
- 1:41the cosmos, the Supreme Nature formulates itself as the Jiva.
- 1:46The eternal multiple soul of the Purushotama appears as
- 1:50individual spiritual experience in all the forms of the cosmos.
- 1:56All existences are instinct with the life of the one indivisible
- 2:00spirit. All are supported in their
- 2:03personality, actions, and forms by the eternal multiplicity of
- 2:09the one Purusha. End Quote page 117.
- 2:15The higher nature is that of the constituting intelligence that
- 2:19provides direction and purpose to the machinery.
- 2:22The Gita states in chapter 15, verse 7 quote.
- 2:27It is an eternal portion of me that becomes the Jiva in the
- 2:30world of living creatures and cultivates the subjective powers
- 2:35of Prakriti, mind and the five senses.
- 2:38End Quote. Sri Orobindo explains quote for
- 2:43it means that each soul, each being in its spiritual reality
- 2:47is the very Divine, however partial it's actual
- 2:51manifestation of Him in nature. End Quote page 225.
- 2:58The Jiva is therefore divine and partakes of the spiritual
- 3:02essence of the Divine. Para Prakriti is the supreme
- 3:07nature that manifests the entire universal creation.
- 3:11While a Para Prakriti is the lower nature, the Jiva inserts
- 3:17itself into the individual forms of the lower nature as the soul,
- 3:22which maintains the character of the eternal even while it is
- 3:27developing, guiding and uplifting the lower nature as it
- 3:32moves through its evolutionary cycle.
- 3:36Srioro Bindo notes quote. This spirit is the Atman
- 3:41Brahman, essential Divine. When the one Divine manifests
- 3:46its ever inherent multiplicity, this essential Self, where Atman
- 3:51becomes for that manifestation the Central Being who presides
- 3:55from above over the evolution of its personalities and
- 3:59terrestrial lives here, but is itself an eternal portion of the
- 4:04Divine. And prior to the terrestrial
- 4:08manifestation, Para Prakritir Jiva Bhuta, in this lower
- 4:14manifestation, A Para Prakriti, this eternal portion of the
- 4:19Divine appears as the soul, the spark of the Divine fire,
- 4:25supporting the individual evolution, supporting the
- 4:28mental, vital and physical being.
- 4:32The psychic being is the spark growing into a fire, evolving
- 4:37with the growth of the consciousness.
- 4:39The psychic being is therefore evolutionary, not like the
- 4:44Jeevatman prior to the evolution.
- 4:47But man is not aware of the Self or Jeevatman.
- 4:51He is aware only of his ego, or he is aware of the mental being
- 4:55which controls the life and the body, but more deeply he becomes
- 5:00aware of his soul or psychic being as his true center, the
- 5:05Purusha in the heart. The psychic is the central being
- 5:10in the evolution. It proceeds from and represents
- 5:14the Jivatman, the eternal portion of the divine.
- 5:18When there is the full consciousness, the Jivatman and
- 5:22the psychic being join together. End Quote Reference Srioro Bindu
