Transcript
- 0:00Do you listen back to those songs and do you, do you
- 0:01remember like being like I was in pain when I recorded that or
- 0:04how do you? I listen back to that like man,
- 0:07written by woman, like that was one of my last singles.
- 0:10Truly one take and why? Yeah.
- 0:14And so I did. I did the one take of the chorus
- 0:17and I remember just I had a full on panic attack.
- 0:19Girl, are you nervy because you're performing at
- 0:21Lollapalooza this year? Yes, I'm I'm sweating.
- 0:24Oh my gosh, just do you think your voice will be fine by then
- 0:26though? That's it in like 3.
- 0:27Months. I'm going to make it fine by
- 0:29then. More excited or more?
- 0:29Nervous. I'm more excited to be honest.
- 0:47Hello Delulu Delulu's and welcome back to Delulu.
- 0:50And a very special welcome to our guest cinematic rising pop
- 0:54starlet Miss Whitney Whitney herself.
- 0:56Hi Whitney, Miss Whitney squared.
- 0:59Thank you so much for coming on the show.
- 1:01We're so excited to have you. Well.
- 1:02Thank you for having me. I have so much I want to get
- 1:04into with you. Like, I feel like there's so
- 1:05much lore to explore. And like, everything we were
- 1:07kind of talking about before the show even started, I was like,
- 1:09wait, wait, we need to do it here.
- 1:11We need to chat about it here. But before we get into anything,
- 1:14we start every show by doing some affirmations.
- 1:17So if you're listening at home, all you need to do is sit back,
- 1:21relax, breathe, and let Whitney and I speak some greatness into
- 1:25your life. OK, so do you want me to start?
- 1:29You. Yeah, you start.
- 1:30OK. I'm going to start.
- 1:31Do you want a disclaimer? From Oh yeah, the huge
- 1:33disclaimer. I'm dyslexic going in on a cold
- 1:35read and there is a typo in what?
- 1:38It there is a typo which was not intentional, that's actually on
- 1:41me. But at least you know I'm not
- 1:42using AI. OK, so I release fear, scarcity
- 1:47and attachment, and I welcome prosperity with an open heart.
- 1:52I release what no longer aligns with me and make space for
- 1:56greater things to enter my life. The more I let go of what drains
- 2:00me, the more energy I have for what nourishes me.
- 2:04Letting go is not Los and inviting an abundance, peace and
- 2:10new opportunities. Letting go is not Los y'all.
- 2:14Abundance flows to me naturally when I trust myself and honor my
- 2:18Grove. I trust that what is meant for
- 2:21me will never require me to force or chase it.
- 2:24Clock it. I no longer cling to the past.
- 2:28I'm creating a future filled with expansion, happiness and
- 2:32possibility. Every ending clears the path for
- 2:36something more beautiful, aligned and fulfilling.
- 2:40I'm stepping into a new chapter where peace, confidence, love
- 2:44and abundance finds me effortlessly.
- 2:47I have a typo 2 Fuck OK sorry y'all.
- 2:53Maybe oopsies? Let's bring an AI I am worthy of
- 3:00overflowing love, success, joy, and abundance in every area of
- 3:05my life. I'm claiming all of that.
- 3:08And guys, if you're listening at home, feel free to claim it is
- 3:12yours. All right, We're going to get
- 3:15into the Whitney Whitney lore lore.
- 3:16So Whitney, Whitney Whitney is a reinvention, A rebrand because
- 3:21you were actually releasing music under a different artist
- 3:23name. You're your name, name.
- 3:24Yeah, your name, name, name for like a decade.
- 3:28Right. Yeah, 10 years for sure.
- 3:29So where did this all begin for you?
- 3:31Like releasing music? Putting it out because you
- 3:33actually started as a teenager. Yeah, yeah.
- 3:35Oh my God. I wrote my first song at like
- 3:3713. I won't get too deep into the
- 3:40story, but it was for. Well, maybe I will.
- 3:45It was for I wrote this poem for one of my Internet friends.
- 3:48Sure, we all had that. Yes, love that.
- 3:51Especially if you were in like the fandoms of it all.
- 3:53Yeah, What fandoms were you in? Oh.
- 3:55God. Give it to us.
- 3:57This one happened to be from the Mag Con fandom.
- 3:59Oh I love mag con, I don't no shame.
- 4:02Who? Who's your fave?
- 4:03Who's your fave? I was Nash Grier for sure.
- 4:05Really. OK, who's mine?
- 4:07The Jacks. The Jacks, Jack and Jack.
- 4:09Yeah, and I actually, UN ironically love their music.
- 4:12It's really quality. It's really quality music, yes.
- 4:16Anyways I. Smoke 2 cigarettes and I don't
- 4:19even smell. Yeah.
- 4:20Oh my God what a bar. Are you fucking kidding me?
- 4:23What a bar from their Gone EP. Me too.
- 4:25I literally went to their tour. I bought meet and greet.
- 4:28Actually not kidding. I'm going to find these
- 4:30pictures. Wait yes I have to find my mags
- 4:32on meet and greet pictures. Too.
- 4:34Oh my God, wait, we're like spiritually connected.
- 4:37Was that shocking? Yes.
- 4:38I'm super into it. You know what?
- 4:40I just think for me, I was like, I don't know why I was so into
- 4:43it, but I was really into it too.
- 4:45Maybe we were Internet friends, done the mag con era.
- 4:49On cake. Or something.
- 4:50That was that was me girl. Wow.
- 4:52OK, there we go. OK, love Nash too.
- 4:55Yeah, I wrote like a poem for her.
- 4:57She was pretty depressed. And yeah, so to bring it way
- 5:02deeper than Mag con, Yeah, I that's so.
- 5:04Funny, I can we just put that out.
- 5:06We were like haha, teenage voice laughing like we're done.
- 5:09And then we're like, so then she was going through it.
- 5:13Right. Yeah, yeah.
- 5:14And then that was like the first thing you wrote.
- 5:15Wrote a song. Yeah, my dad plays piano, so he
- 5:18like, put piano to it and I wrote melody.
- 5:21And yeah, that song is called Ghost Story, and it's out on
- 5:24Whitney. Whitney Wars.
- 5:25OK, we're going to. Listen to 2013 Wow.
- 5:28That's crazy. Yeah.
- 5:29Wait, so that's so special. And then when you wrote that,
- 5:31that was the first thing you wrote.
- 5:32Yeah. Did you know you wanted to sing
- 5:33though? Yes.
- 5:34So you do know what you want to sing?
- 5:35Did you know you wanted to write?
- 5:37I no, that's a great question, honestly.
- 5:40Did you ever imagine, like, being an artist?
- 5:42Did you think like, oh, people just give me songs and then I'm
- 5:43going to have songs written for me and I'm just going to sing
- 5:45them because I'm a singer? Because I know a lot of artists
- 5:47have friends who are artists who don't care to write their music.
- 5:49Because I know you write yours. You know what I mean?
- 5:51Like when you began your journey, did you always imagine
- 5:54like I'm going to be the one penning this too?
- 5:56Yeah, I think once I wrote that I was like, oh wait, I'm
- 5:59actually, I'm not that bad. I'm.
- 6:01Not too shabby. Something's happening here.
- 6:04The lyrics are they don't make any sense though.
- 6:05Like, oh really? Well, what?
- 6:07How old were you? You were like 13.
- 6:08I was 13. Yeah, 13.
- 6:10That's fair. That's fine.
- 6:11Yeah. Yeah, we're not.
- 6:12We're not thinking Shakespearean anything at 13.
- 6:15I I thought I was at 13. That's fair.
- 6:19You are now. You are now.
- 6:22Maybe you are a woman riding a man.
- 6:24Oh, Shakespeare. We'll get into it.
- 6:28We'll get into it. So that's how it started for
- 6:30you. And you start writing and you
- 6:31start making music, and then you actually start releasing music
- 6:34really early, like at 15. Yeah, that's great.
- 6:36Were you doing independently? I Yeah.
- 6:39Brave. That's so young I can't even
- 6:42imagine. Yeah, I found like a producer in
- 6:44Nashville. And so I'd fly to Nashville like
- 6:48throughout middle school. No fucking way.
- 6:50Like by myself, like my parents were like, you could do that.
- 6:51And. You were just going just right,
- 6:53yeah. Oh fuck, they treated me so bad
- 6:56in those sessions though. Like, 'cause imagine like you
- 6:58walk in, it's a 13 year old. Yes, it's like, yeah, like
- 7:01people would do like drugs. Oh, what?
- 7:05There's no good, no. Good.
- 7:06No way. Some.
- 7:07People are great though, you know who you are.
- 7:09Oh God yes, name them, name them right now.
- 7:13Wait, that's crazy, 'cause it also feels like that's such a
- 7:15mature thing to do, especially like coming from wait, where
- 7:18you're based in LA, Where you based in LA so you'd fly to
- 7:20Nashville. Yeah, I'd fly.
- 7:22I'm like, I was born in Connecticut, in middle school
- 7:25Connecticut. So yeah.
- 7:27And then I moved to New York, then I'm Nashville, then LA.
- 7:31Damn all over the place, all the music scenes.
- 7:33Does New York have a music scene?
- 7:35I think it likes to think it does.
- 7:37Yeah, 'cause I want to do a writing camp in New York.
- 7:39I've been saying this, but I'm like, I don't think that's like,
- 7:41that's just a personal thing I want to do.
- 7:43Yeah, like do it. I'm gonna do it.
- 7:45But like, no expectations maybe? I also want to do a writing camp
- 7:49in Nashville, but now I don't know anymore.
- 7:50Oh, I don't know anymore. I don't want to share my drugs
- 7:53in my sessions. Just kidding.
- 7:54Just kidding, y'all. OK, so you're releasing music.
- 7:57So who is like Whitney? Whitney versus like, when you're
- 8:00releasing under your name? Name.
- 8:01Yeah. Whitney Weares was very
- 8:06cultivated by others. Like, even though I was trying
- 8:10to write like my stuff, it was like, oh, well, you're 13
- 8:13through 15. Like, even when I was older,
- 8:15doing it like 1617, it was your child.
- 8:20We know better. We're like the adults.
- 8:22I literally was just talking to my, I had a session right before
- 8:26this and I was talking to my producer and I was telling my
- 8:29session in horror stories. And one of them I was just like,
- 8:31I went into a session and the producer was like super creepy
- 8:35and like, you know, because I was, I told you I had a terrible
- 8:37session last night. And then I was like telling my
- 8:40producer today. I was like, that was the second
- 8:41worst session of my life. The first one was definitely
- 8:43like the guy who's like, you know, super creepy, like sexual
- 8:46harassing, whatever. That was the worst one.
- 8:49But I was like, at the very least he was nice though, and at
- 8:51least like, but when it wasn't nice was he did not want me to
- 8:54write the song. He wanted to write the song.
- 8:56And I was like, I was really confused because like, wait,
- 9:00what? You know what I mean?
- 9:00Like, what's happening here? I hate that.
- 9:02I really don't like that. So like, I definitely.
- 9:04I feel that, yeah. And it still happens like no.
- 9:07You're kidding Like. Sometimes not like, oh, she's a
- 9:09child. Like, I'm obviously not Yeah,
- 9:11yeah, yeah, yeah. But it's like, Oh no, we're
- 9:14going to we're going to write this song like.
- 9:16But then I don't work with them again.
- 9:17A. 100% that's what I was going to say.
- 9:19Like what do you do in those situations?
- 9:20Like in in that session, do you just let them write or do you
- 9:22like? I'm like texting my manager,
- 9:24Justin. I'm like, Justin, I'm never
- 9:26working with these people again. Like I'm about to cry and then I
- 9:27go cry in the bathroom, you know?
- 9:30I feel like that's such a rite of passage for making music
- 9:32though. Like you kind of need a weed
- 9:33out, like the people you don't want to work with.
- 9:35Yes, and then it brings you to the ones that are just the most
- 9:38magical you're. So much more grateful for them.
- 9:40And you're like, this is right. This feels better.
- 9:42That's how I feel. I'm so right there, too.
- 9:45So I feel like with Whitney, Whitney, like, it also feels
- 9:47super refined, you know, Is this like the sound and like the
- 9:50things you're imagining for yourself?
- 9:51Yes. So yeah, to answer the rest of
- 9:53that question, it's like Whitney.
- 9:54Whitney is kind of who I always wanted to be musically and and I
- 10:00would like try to in my previous sessions for Whitney Wars,
- 10:06right, Like we just talked about and Whitney, Whitney is like no
- 10:11rules. I'm fully myself.
- 10:13Like we're doing the tempo changes, the key changes, the
- 10:16chords that don't make sense, like.
- 10:18That's what I like about cicadas.
- 10:19Fucking missing wrong cicadas. You had it right before.
- 10:22This he was like, is it? Cicadas.
- 10:25And I was like, yeah. Bitch, I knew it when I was
- 10:26listening to it too. I was like, I'm not gonna get it
- 10:28right. Oh my God, I'm so embarrassed.
- 10:30That's so funny 'cause I literally said before this was
- 10:31like, let me just confirm before we go.
- 10:33I like the outro, you know what I mean?
- 10:35And then you also do it on the narcissist one right as well.
- 10:40Like the how it slows down. I just, I like that.
- 10:42Like, I like things that keep it interesting and fresh when
- 10:44you're listening to a song. We're going to really get into
- 10:46it because that's actually what I really want to talk about.
- 10:48But so now you rebrand as Whitney Whitney.
- 10:50Like, was this an intentional decision?
- 10:51You're like, OK, I'm going to leave behind this other project
- 10:53I've been putting into for the past decade.
- 10:55You know, you've been releasing music under your own name,
- 10:57moving on to becoming Whitney. Whitney.
- 11:00Like, this is a decision you made.
- 11:01Like what made it be like, OK, I'm going to reinvent myself
- 11:05now. The real answer is I've always
- 11:07wanted to and like for many, like legal annoying industry.
- 11:14Thanks. I like couldn't like I wanted to
- 11:17do this type of music and rebrand for years and years.
- 11:20How do you deal with that? Like I can't even imagine not
- 11:23making music. I'm not like super like.
- 11:25Oh, yeah, no, it's the worst. I didn't even want to release
- 11:27any of those. Whitney, Whitney, Whitney were
- 11:29songs. No, yeah, the Whitney were
- 11:31songs. I didn't like them when they
- 11:33came out. I was just like, I just have to
- 11:35push through. Like, I can do this.
- 11:37I can do it like, because everyone was like, oh, well, you
- 11:40have to be more pop and it's going to be well.
- 11:42And then radio. I hate, honestly, that's that
- 11:46was banned for my sessions when they're like, well, this is not
- 11:49going to do on radio. I'm like, yeah, I I would hope
- 11:51not because I don't. I'm not writing for radio.
- 11:53No. Yes, I'm writing for me.
- 11:58So it was like a conscious decision a while ago, but I was
- 12:01only able to act on it. Got it like a year ago.
- 12:04OK, so like, you've been wanting to do it.
- 12:06Yeah. Oh my gosh.
- 12:07So then you're able to finally do.
- 12:09And that's when you're like, OK, pulling the trigger because like
- 12:11with all the EPS that you release in your upcoming EP,
- 12:14like everything is so cohesive and living in this world of
- 12:17Whitney Whitney. And it, like I said, it feels so
- 12:19refined and it feels really refreshing that it's like, you
- 12:21know, this is something I talk about all the time, just like
- 12:24with my friends and also just with guests I have on the show.
- 12:26But I really like artists who world build.
- 12:27I really like artists who give us something that we can sink
- 12:29our teeth into versus just like waterfalling singles or like,
- 12:32here's this and this and this and this.
- 12:33Like I like things that kind of sit sonically together and
- 12:36things that fit. And then with your EP that
- 12:38you've released, EP 1.1, EP 1.2, like it's all in the same realm.
- 12:43It's like it is very cinematic, which I someone asked me
- 12:46earlier, they're like, oh, what kind of music does Whitney
- 12:48Whitney make? And I was like her press release
- 12:50said cinematic pop. But when I listened, I was like,
- 12:52it is cinematic pop. It's very lush, It's very big.
- 12:55It's very like feels coming of age.
- 12:57Like I feel like I can hear these in coming of age movies in
- 12:59those like sunset scenes and driving in the car and like what
- 13:03a feeling. Thank you.
- 13:04That's literally. The goal, guys, you're doing it.
- 13:08You're slaying. OK, so we need to get into this
- 13:11too before we continue. First, thank you so much for
- 13:13coming on the show. But I know you've been dealing
- 13:16with like how things with your voice.
- 13:18So I just saw, I don't know if you posted this yesterday.
- 13:22You posted a video about how you've been struggling with your
- 13:24voice. You lost your voice.
- 13:25You said singing has been torturous for you, talking has
- 13:28been torturous for you. And you agreed to come onto a
- 13:30podcast and release music, make EPS, work on an album, sign to a
- 13:34record label. But what's going on?
- 13:37Are you OK? I am OK, I am does.
- 13:41This hurt to speak. It it does hurt to speak.
- 13:43Yeah, I'm so sorry. Not as much as it did, which is
- 13:46why I finally posted that video. Like I promised myself I would
- 13:49make it public when I knew I was at the.
- 13:54I'm going to say end. I'm going to say end.
- 13:56Yeah. Tail end.
- 13:57Yeah, you're good. Yes.
- 13:58You're healed? Exactly?
- 13:59Yes, healed. That should.
- 14:02Have been the affirmations. That is affirmation.
- 14:04I can speak without pain because I've been there.
- 14:08Actually, I lost my voice a couple months ago and it was a
- 14:10bitch and I was also recording and I completely understood that
- 14:12and I pushed through like I would just see and I'd be like,
- 14:14this is ripping me apart. But I like so I I kind of got
- 14:18it. Yours seems way more intense
- 14:19than mine. No that sucks though.
- 14:21Like no one should have to go through that even for a day like
- 14:24as an artist. Do you know what happened?
- 14:27It's like yes and no. It's such a mystery and I feel
- 14:30like a lot of like chronic pain with random stuff.
- 14:32It's just like you don't know. And that's why it just continues
- 14:35and continues. But like 2 years ago, honestly,
- 14:39maybe even more, I was in a session and Whitney Wers would
- 14:43do this like crazy belt. Whitney Whitney does it
- 14:46sometimes too, but she's not really allowed to do that
- 14:49anymore. Because I did like a crazy belt
- 14:53and I just like felt something snap and I was like, oh, OK, oh
- 14:57shit. And I wasn't like that
- 14:59concerned. But you knew in the moment I
- 15:02did, something was wrong. I was like, I cannot do another
- 15:03take of this and I went home. I was like, it's fine.
- 15:08Like it'll be fine. And then ever since then it so.
- 15:13Painful. Two years ago, Yeah.
- 15:14And it wasn't like a vocal note or something.
- 15:16So I got scoped, but I've been scoped like a.
- 15:20Scoping is for those who don't know.
- 15:22Give it to us. It's like they put a camera down
- 15:25your throat and like see your vocal cords vibes.
- 15:29And I've had like small, like super duper small vocal notes
- 15:34for so long. Like so long.
- 15:36So they saw those again. I personally think I've had them
- 15:39for years on end. So we tried to get rid of those
- 15:43by doing months of silence. Like I was just, I was mute.
- 15:47I was mute. You weren't recording music or
- 15:48talking or anything. And then I would like stop the
- 15:50silence and then go back into the studio, which was so dumb.
- 15:53Like they're like, oh, you're fine.
- 15:55Like take some steroids which is the worst thing you could do.
- 15:57Oh my God. Yeah, and then it still hurt,
- 16:01and then I go back on vocal rest.
- 16:04Wait, girl, I'm so shooky McKee. I'm sorry.
- 16:06That's actually terrible. Yeah, what the fuck?
- 16:09So I still haven't like sung like song sung since then.
- 16:14I'm so shocked cause like you, so you you're dealing with this
- 16:16and the 2 EPS that you had released and the music that
- 16:18you've been putting out under Whitney.
- 16:19Whitney, this is while you're. Yeah, you sound incredible.
- 16:22Thanks. It's sickening.
- 16:24Like what? Like because when you said in
- 16:27that video you were like, I would do one take of the course
- 16:29and be like, OK, that's it y'all Yeah, take it.
- 16:31That's it. What about double?
- 16:34S Oh yeah. I would do double S, but like
- 16:36very light double S And then I'd have like one of my main
- 16:39writers, Cleo Tai, she's done all the harmonies.
- 16:43That's so sweet. And like our voices blend really
- 16:45well. So it just like.
- 16:46And that's, that's honestly really rare too, to be honest.
- 16:49I like finding that. That's really nice though, how
- 16:52that supports so then you can still flesh out the song and the
- 16:54vision without having to push yourself too hard.
- 16:56But you genuinely sound incredible.
- 16:57And I'm like also shocked. I was like, 'cause then I saw
- 17:00that video first before I listened to the music and I was
- 17:02expecting for you to sound strange or something, but then I
- 17:06was like, oh, she's like a better singer than the rest of
- 17:09the world without the vocal issues.
- 17:11But that's. Crazy.
- 17:12I'm going to come back even. Better.
- 17:13Oh my God, do you want to belt again?
- 17:16No, my voice teacher was like never again.
- 17:19Yeah, and I'm like, well, I mean, you don't even like,
- 17:21honestly, you don't even need to.
- 17:23I think so. No, I think voice textures and
- 17:25just like performance is like that itself can already feel
- 17:27really big, you know? Yeah, I get a belt though.
- 17:30I love a belt too. I'll.
- 17:31Do a healthy belt but like there's like some like
- 17:34borderline screamy belts that caused.
- 17:36It I think my belts are pretty screamy, but yeah, we'll get
- 17:39there. We'll we'll figure it out.
- 17:40So it's hurting. It's like where you at right now
- 17:43talking to me on the show. Out of 10, you're at like a one
- 17:48or a. 2 which is really sad. I really did heal you.
- 17:50You did? Period.
- 17:51Oh OK wait, I'm happy to hear that.
- 17:53OK, good 'cause I felt bad. I was like Oh my gosh, she's
- 17:54gonna come on in yappers. We'll make it a light and easy.
- 17:57Yeah and you're having a good time so it's like fine.
- 17:59Absolutely. Well, do you listen back to
- 18:01those songs and do you do you remember like being like I was
- 18:03in pain when I recorded that or how do you I?
- 18:06Listened back to that, like, man run by woman.
- 18:08Like, that was one of my last singles.
- 18:10Yes, truly one take. And that's why, yeah.
- 18:14And so I did, I did the one take of the chorus and I remember
- 18:18just I had a full on panic attack because it was such a
- 18:22hard thing of oh wait, this actually sounds really good, but
- 18:26it hurts so bad like that was. Just like, and it's like what
- 18:29you do in that situation. Do we keep going or do we just
- 18:32like? Like that's it.
- 18:34Like that's the that's the take I.
- 18:36Think that's also really special, though.
- 18:38That's also a really true testament to your talent and
- 18:40like delivery and performance because like I'm I am not a one
- 18:44take Jake, Like I will deliver it like 17 times and I'm like
- 18:47comp comp that shit. That's what I used to do and
- 18:50like versus, like low versus were easy and I could do a bunch
- 18:53of takes of those. But you know, courses are a
- 18:56course. So I got when you said that when
- 18:58you were like, I would do one take, of course, I was like, I
- 19:00know exactly why. Of course, of course, like, yes,
- 19:03I got that. Oh my God, you were truly God's
- 19:06strongest warrior, 'cause like, that's crazy.
- 19:10How have you been getting through it 'cause I know you
- 19:11said in your video that you were also like, you did Western
- 19:17medicine. You're doing some woo woo shit.
- 19:20You saw a sorcerer. What's going on over here in New
- 19:24Orleans? How are how's the sorcerer?
- 19:28The sorcerer was phenomenal. So I this is I just, I love this
- 19:32story and like some people are going to be like, bro, what?
- 19:35No, I'm on board. I'm woo woo as fuck, give it to
- 19:37us. Woo woo and delulu.
- 19:40Woo, woo, do woo. Woo woo.
- 19:43Bitch coining. Boom, put it on a mug.
- 19:49Yeah, New Orleans was a few months ago and home went with my
- 19:54family and my brother and I went to all those, like voodoo shops.
- 19:57If you know New Orleans, like that's just like the touristy
- 20:00sort of like thing to do. One of them is to like, go to
- 20:03the voodoo. Shop you just like visiting?
- 20:05Yeah. You weren't there for the
- 20:06sorcerer, you were just happened to be.
- 20:08Happened to be around. Oh, I was thought, I thought you
- 20:09were like, I saw that. The sorcerer in New Orleans and
- 20:12the sign. Of the.
- 20:13Right, little Princess and the frog type shit.
- 20:15Yes, yes. OK.
- 20:16So you're, you're venturing, you're seeing, you're seeing
- 20:18this up. And so I'm like talking to this
- 20:21woman who runs one of the stores, and I'm like, you know,
- 20:24there's a lot of healing stuff here.
- 20:25Like, do you have any? I just kind of, like, started
- 20:27talking. And she was like, you know, you
- 20:31should go down the street and you'll find, like, a very small
- 20:35blue door. And then it doesn't look like a
- 20:37store, but you walk through that door and then you're going to
- 20:41see a very small room and you're going to ask for Phillip.
- 20:45And I was like, OK, she. Sent you on a quest.
- 20:47She sent me on a quest yes. So I'm like OK great.
- 20:51So me and my brother, we follow the just verbal directions by
- 20:54the door, walk in. It's like the size of a bigger
- 20:57closet. And there's just potions all
- 21:00along the walls. Like, they're all like brown
- 21:02bottles, handwritten labels. And there's one person sitting
- 21:06in this rocking chair with the tallest glass of white wine you
- 21:10could possibly imagine, like to the brim.
- 21:12And I was like, I'm looking for Phillip.
- 21:16You're like and I'm not sure if I like or if I should be.
- 21:19And he was like, I'm Phillip and I was like slay.
- 21:23So I explained my issue. They didn't like charge me or
- 21:26anything too like to do this. Like it's crazy.
- 21:30They just like listen to me, got me like this special potion.
- 21:33It's literally like this big and I rub it on my neck every day.
- 21:38And then the quest is I was sent to find a dried cricket, a
- 21:43feather of a songbird, glitter and something that represents my
- 21:48artistry. So like I would do like a piece
- 21:50of my. Hair, Phillip was telling you.
- 21:51Oh yes, and then some of the potion get a neck, like a
- 21:54bottle, like a tiny bottle, wear it around my neck.
- 21:58And there's just so many issues there because, yeah, songbird
- 22:03feathers are illegal. Yeah, and I was like, I'm not
- 22:05talking no dad cricket. Oh, I was shipped 10.
- 22:09My stepmom's mother lives in Arizona and she mailed me.
- 22:12One specific cricket you needed. No, just any dried cricket.
- 22:15Yucky. Yeah, I feel like you can get
- 22:17that at the pet store actually, not on.
- 22:18Thinking about it, I did think about that.
- 22:20Then I would have to let it die like they do.
- 22:22Like live crickets. Oh, maybe you're right.
- 22:25Yeah. I thought about that.
- 22:26Yeah, I thought about that route.
- 22:27OK, You got shipped 1 though. I got shipped the Commission, by
- 22:30the way, This plus is really, yeah.
- 22:33So I still need the feather of a songbird though I do.
- 22:36I haven't. I haven't found it.
- 22:38OK, what's a songbird specifically?
- 22:40Like a singing bird? Yeah.
- 22:42I I chat a ChatGPT D it and it was like there's so many
- 22:47different species. OK, there's like one that's
- 22:49possibly illegal in the US. Are songbirds illegal or the
- 22:52feathers of them illegal? The feather, the feather, the
- 22:56cicadas. Yes.
- 22:56OK. The feather is illegal.
- 23:01OK, Well, legally, we were not looking for a father.
- 23:04No. But if anyone watching has one
- 23:06by any chance or means, you know, forward it to Justin.
- 23:10Yeah. Whitney's manager.
- 23:11Just for like, no. Specific purpose.
- 23:15Like fuck it if you just have a spare one, fuck it.
- 23:16Yeah, this. It's a spare.
- 23:17A spare. Yeah, and none of us will say
- 23:19anything. Yes, Mom's a word.
- 23:20So this is the final step of the healing thing.
- 23:22I genuinely think so. I'm not even kidding.
- 23:25Wait, how long ago did you see the sorcerer?
- 23:27Like 2 months. Oh, OK, why aren't you wearing
- 23:32the vial? Because I don't have the feather
- 23:34yet. So I feel like it would go the
- 23:35vial. Yeah, the cricket, the glitter,
- 23:37the hair and the the songbird feather, Yeah.
- 23:40And the potion all in the vial. And you're just.
- 23:42I feel like it's going to look super sick to be honest.
- 23:44That could be a part of your branding.
- 23:45OK, because you had a spiritual awakening in 2020.
- 23:47Your Wikipedia confirmed you were shocked when I told you
- 23:50that earlier. Like why is that on the
- 23:52Wikipedia? You were like, how did you know?
- 23:54How deep did you go? Like.
- 23:56Not that deep, it was actually just the first page of Wikipedia
- 23:59for you. Oh God, your spiritual awakening
- 24:01you said. That's helped you a lot through
- 24:02the voice issue as well. Yeah, like.
- 24:05What was this the spiritual awakening like?
- 24:07Tell us about that. In high school, I want to say
- 24:09was actually. So Wikipedia is Loki wrong We.
- 24:12Need a Fact Check like. I don't know who wrote that, but
- 24:14that'd. Be so cool, your Wikipedia gets
- 24:16updated and the Spiritual Awakening gets cited as the show
- 24:19that we rectify as 2015 actually.
- 24:23Yeah, let's make it happen. No, it was kind of, I think it
- 24:26was 2016. I watched Yeah high school and I
- 24:30watched this movie called Waking Life, and it's just like, I
- 24:34don't even know what happened in my brain.
- 24:35I was just like so they clicked Wow.
- 24:38Yeah, so your life changed. And then I went down like this
- 24:40whole rabbit hole. I watched this like influencer
- 24:43called Phil Good Life. And I think he changed his
- 24:46username to like feel good Within.
- 24:49OK. But yeah, that's it, full.
- 24:50Shout out Yeah, Phillips are pouring in your life.
- 24:53Oh my God, that's crazy. Wow.
- 24:56And still two of them. Yeah, Phil means love in Greek
- 24:59or something. Don't quote me on that.
- 25:01It's either Greek or I know it's love, but.
- 25:03Which is the Wikipedia. Latin.
- 25:06Latin for. Something around there that's.
- 25:08Pretty, yeah. But yeah, so maybe Phils are.
- 25:10Yeah, they're important. Sending love.
- 25:12Yeah. But yeah, I just have always
- 25:15gone down that path since then. Yeah.
- 25:17And I don't, like, shove it in people's faces.
- 25:19I think I did on Tiktok during COVID because I was like Oh my
- 25:23God that's why I'm here. You have I'm pretty woo woo, so
- 25:26phenomenal. That's why everything you're
- 25:27saying I'm like. Yep, yeah.
- 25:29I'm like, yeah, 100% and like, lock it.
- 25:31Yeah. I was like, so specific cricket
- 25:33though, yes, the feather, I get all that.
- 25:36Yeah, of course. Yeah.
- 25:37But no, that's helped me. I feel like my connection with
- 25:40like the universe definitely got like tampered with two years ago
- 25:44when I lost like the thing most important to me.
- 25:47And I, I've definitely been working to get it back and I
- 25:51feel like I have since January, like it was like lost, like, you
- 25:56know, like sometimes it just goes away and.
- 25:59That's scary, especially as like an artist and someone sings and
- 26:01like even just one who wants a yap, you know what I mean?
- 26:04But. I'm a yap.
- 26:05Brad, how we going? Yap.
- 26:06You know, we can't. So I can't believe you hid from
- 26:09your record label that you lost your.
- 26:10How is that even possible? I mean, I wouldn't have been
- 26:12able to sell, you know? Yeah.
- 26:14Do you think they wouldn't have signed you if you told them?
- 26:16They're like, oh, by the way, it hurts.
- 26:18I look. He don't know if they would
- 26:20have. Justin's shaking his head.
- 26:22What? OK, well, the contract's signed.
- 26:24We can't go back. No.
- 26:25Take you back to you. But yeah, well, hopefully not.
- 26:29Sorry, I've just I was just like I just had so many artists sit
- 26:32on this couch with their like being whatever.
- 26:35Anyways, go. Ahead.
- 26:36No, no, I've I've, I've also been if we're talking dropped
- 26:39land, Yeah, I. Was like don't say the word.
- 26:41I feel like no, like it's a cursed word.
- 26:43No sign artist. I was with Island for like a
- 26:46second. Really.
- 26:47Oh, that didn't come up on the Wikipedia did.
- 26:49It. No, no.
- 26:52UMG maybe, yeah, maybe that one. OK.
- 26:55But no, I kept it a secret, like pretty easily because I sounded
- 26:59good. Yeah.
- 27:00Oh yeah. And because I was talking to
- 27:01them honestly. I love that this happened
- 27:05honestly. Like somehow my demos got sent
- 27:08around, which I just does not happen anymore.
- 27:11So I was just like, OMG, like what's going?
- 27:14On. So yeah, like different record
- 27:16labels were contacting me and I was like, I guess I just have to
- 27:19keep making these demos. So I did.
- 27:22And yeah, it was so exciting. Super exciting, yeah.
- 27:25Especially because you've been putting out music for soul long
- 27:27and it's like this opportunity of like this rebirth and like
- 27:30you already knew that you wanted to change into like Whitney
- 27:32Whitney and like having the lineman and the team that like
- 27:34that's cool. No, it was awesome.
- 27:36Like very validating that because it was once I wrote, I
- 27:40think it was does the narcissist need a kiss?
- 27:42Was kind of the first thing I wrote in the very first.
- 27:45Single you released to yes under Whitney.
- 27:47Whitney, That's right. And the fact that, like, the
- 27:51thing I've been told no to my whole life, which is like
- 27:54weirder music, is the thing that like people actually started to
- 27:57like. And it's just a demo like Girl.
- 27:59That's what I'm. Saying like it was, I was very,
- 28:02I was very adamant on I don't know, you can have your take on
- 28:06major labels. I personally am Atlantic.
- 28:09They wooed me like I love them so much.
- 28:12Hello. Hello.
- 28:14Hello. Hello.
- 28:15Like, I'm trying to be a label mate.
- 28:16Let's go. Yeah, I know people.
- 28:18The industry is so interesting. I have so many artists I talk to
- 28:20and like everyone has such a strong take on labels or
- 28:23whatever, but I see them as just like a partnership and like like
- 28:27another resource to try to get the music out because
- 28:29ultimately, you know, I I would hope all orders just create
- 28:33connection and people who could resonate with the music and
- 28:35stuff. I'm like what you said, like
- 28:36that's surprising because like something a little weirder
- 28:38because like, even like, you know, you're very conceptual
- 28:41with like this narcissist indeed.
- 28:42A kiss a man ran by a woman. If the rain doesn't stop, we can
- 28:44stay forever. Girl we these novel.
- 28:47Titles. Yes, so funny.
- 28:50I wrote a song called It's Hot When Boys Cry, and I remember
- 28:53thinking I was like, this is a long title, this is really long,
- 28:55and now I'm looking at these. I'm like, not long.
- 28:58I was like, no, I don't. I don't kind of fine.
- 29:00I was like the if the rain doesn't stop, we can say for
- 29:03everyone like that that's a sentence.
- 29:06Yes. Yeah.
- 29:07But that's good though. Like now you're tapping into
- 29:09that and that's awesome. So.
- 29:11OK, so you end up signing of Atlantic.
- 29:12When did you sign? Halloween.
- 29:15Wait, really? 2024 Wait 20252025.
- 29:21No way. Like 6 months ago.
- 29:23Seven months ago. Wait, what is the time?
- 29:25What are we, 2026 = 20? The math meme?
- 29:30I was like. Really thinking that right now.
- 29:31I was like, Oh no, she's asking me to do math right now for
- 29:34months. 2024, so only 2024, so it's been like a year and a half
- 29:38so. You had like a year of like
- 29:39development and then before you put out the first song, 'cause
- 29:41it didn't you, you did the first one end of last year.
- 29:44It was, yeah. And.
- 29:46Or. Beginning of getting everything
- 29:48that I've ever done in my life. Yeah, same these.
- 29:51That's so. Oh my God.
- 29:53The Wikipedia was not updated. No, it's just the spiritual
- 29:56awakening. Just the spiritual awakening
- 29:57showcased. Yeah.
- 29:59So a year and a half ago. And then honestly, like, then I
- 30:02did tell them I was like, hey, guys, this is going on.
- 30:06And so it wasn't necessarily development.
- 30:09It was trying to heal my vocal cords.
- 30:12So yeah, that's what they were. And then they were.
- 30:14Yeah. So we were all.
- 30:16I'm very thankful. Like, my team was so supportive
- 30:19and they still are, like, genuinely so thankful.
- 30:22Yeah, like good people. That's nice, though, to work
- 30:24with people who, like, care about, like the artists, of
- 30:27course, the art belts of the person.
- 30:29Yeah, because like, that's a physical thing and that's
- 30:31suckies, you know? That's bad.
- 30:33And then finally, it's just like, whatever, like let's just
- 30:35release it even though I Can't Sing.
- 30:36Oh. No, but it's not great.
- 30:38Thanks. Do you listen back and you think
- 30:40it sounds great? Do you listen back?
- 30:41And you're like, I wish I could. No, I listen back and I'm like,
- 30:43wow, no one would know. No one would know.
- 30:45Yeah. No one would know.
- 30:47Exactly. Yeah.
- 30:48So you don't feel like tainted by yours just like, OK, cool.
- 30:50It is it? It didn't.
- 30:51No, like I was like there. It couldn't even be better.
- 30:53A. 100% and honestly, I think there's a magic in that too.
- 30:55Like of course, what's that ailment that sucks, but I also
- 30:58like it also gives it the real raw aspects, which I think now
- 31:03that we know that like you're not doing a million takes,
- 31:05you're not comping a bunch for these songs.
- 31:06Like that's so special, it makes it even more like connected.
- 31:12What's the word intimate? Intimate.
- 31:14Yes. Got it.
- 31:15Yes. That's yeah, yeah, it sounds
- 31:18really good way to look at it, honestly.
- 31:19Definitely. I mean, it's one of those things
- 31:20where just like it could be like, OK, well now I Can't Sing,
- 31:24I can't do it, and now like this is my only take.
- 31:26But it's like it sounds great, it feels good.
- 31:28I think that's what matters the most to you.
- 31:29Just like how you connect with the music and the people who are
- 31:32listening and everything's super cinematic, just like your press
- 31:35release said. And I definitely agree.
- 31:36I love the strings that are on the project and that would you
- 31:39like feels very coming of age. It's very sophisticated.
- 31:42Pop OH. Thank you.
- 31:43Yeah, like feels mature. It also feels like a woman.
- 31:46Like becoming. Oh, woman becoming.
- 31:48Love. I need to come up with a long
- 31:50title to give you a long sentence.
- 31:52That's not long enough at. All that really wasn't that's
- 31:55long for me me love my singular words.
- 31:57You know what's funny is like your EPS are titles so simple
- 31:59too? That yeah, that was kind of the
- 32:01point because I was like, what else could I possibly call that?
- 32:04Like it's already saying way too much in the titles.
- 32:07Let me just do 1.1 1.21.31.4. Are we thinking about 1.4
- 32:12already? We it's all it's all done.
- 32:16We're doing 4 EPS. We're doing 4 reviews and then.
- 32:18When's LP 1.1 coming the. Actual album is just called 1 so
- 32:23that's why it's like points but. Yeah, wait, I like that all.
- 32:31Come together. No, I really like that.
- 32:33Super intentional. Yeah, I'm clocking.
- 32:36So you're gonna do four. You're waterfalling 4 EPS.
- 32:38So EP 1.1, EP 1.2 are out right now and EP 1.3 is coming in.
- 32:44The time. No, I don't know.
- 32:45OK, wait. Do we, are we not announcing?
- 32:47I mean no. That's still coming out in June.
- 32:49Slave. I mean, I think the first single
- 32:51is coming out middle of June vibes and then I'm releasing
- 32:55just all four of those singles because it's my favorite EP of
- 32:59the four. So we're just P. 1.3 is your
- 33:01fave. Yes, yes.
- 33:03So we're just gonna single them all out, you know?
- 33:05Wait a minute, is the album gonna be the four EPS compiled?
- 33:10Yeah. Oh, that's what you're doing?
- 33:12So that. So by the time 1.4 comes out, it
- 33:15will be the album? Yeah.
- 33:17So 4 songs each. 1616 songs. On the album. 16 So then when
- 33:21you drop 1.4, is it going to be EP 1.4 and then one or is it
- 33:26when EP 1.4 comes out then it's like that's album the.
- 33:29Fact that I have thought about. This sorry I'm a nerd about this
- 33:32shit. I'm thinking about my own roll
- 33:34out Moon is right. I ask because I'm also trying to
- 33:36like. Wait, I don't know.
- 33:37Because I'm also, I'm also going to, I'm going to do something
- 33:39similar, yeah, similar. I think like, I think we'll talk
- 33:44about it later. Wait.
- 33:45OK, sorry, that was just for me. I just wanted to know like.
- 33:48Maybe like the top of my head this, yeah, this guy for sure.
- 33:52And I guess off the top of my head, it would probably be like
- 33:55the album is with 1.4. I feel like that'd be kind of
- 33:58awesome so that people don't already have the EP, like all
- 34:02the EPS. I would say as a listener, I
- 34:04would be personally excited to have something new on top of a a
- 34:07moment. Yeah, cuz what a moment in your
- 34:09career, your debut album, right? Like that would be so
- 34:12monumental. But you know what do I know?
- 34:16Do you want nothing? Whatever you feel fit, of
- 34:18course, but. I think that's probably what
- 34:19it's going to be. I think we've decided it here on
- 34:21the Delivery podcast. Not the marketing meeting on
- 34:24camera. I'm like, so what's the RAW
- 34:27exactly looking like and what's the timeline?
- 34:30That is so funny. That's literally how I talk,
- 34:32just naturally with my my friends.
- 34:33No, me too. I I business conversations are
- 34:36just like bread and butter. It's.
- 34:38Terrible. I'll be like OK, so third single
- 34:40coming out. How much are we investing in
- 34:41this one? Like music video, yes or no?
- 34:44Like what's the roll up plan? Did we do visual like it's
- 34:46crazy. I love it.
- 34:47I'm not. I don't even know why.
- 34:49I'm like, it's just. So fun.
- 34:51It's like fun to like see if you can outsmart it.
- 34:54I know. Like me and just.
- 34:55Ever changing. Yeah, started to derail this,
- 34:57but me and my manager Justin, like I don't know if anyone's
- 35:00seen the the popular anime Death Note and I heard of it.
- 35:06I made Justin watch it because it's like we love talking about
- 35:10the business side of music so much, and Death Note has nothing
- 35:13nothing to. Do with music but I was like.
- 35:16No, like we love talking about the business so much and it just
- 35:20makes like, Death Note is the smartest thing.
- 35:23It's like the smartest TV show and we want to be the smartest
- 35:26in the music. Got it.
- 35:27So you're learning. So I was like, if you watch
- 35:29Death Note, then we can be a partnership.
- 35:31But if you don't like unfortunately.
- 35:34And then he watched Death Note. And then he did he.
- 35:36Has yeah, love that I'm about to test my team yes, I'm going to
- 35:40give. Them a little mission, you gotta
- 35:42be so smart. Actually I do like not the
- 35:44definite thing but I will like put them through a lot to see if
- 35:47how invested they are in me first before I take them on.
- 35:49Like I think maybe Charlie come with me to like 6 things before
- 35:53I was like OK then I had like 12 meetings with my manager before
- 35:57I signed anyways regardless. Well and just for two years
- 36:01really. That's so good Oh my God.
- 36:03Pre Atlantic. Pre like every like yeah.
- 36:06Yeah, when you're still Whitney. Whitney Worse.
- 36:08That's crazy town. OK, so EP 1.3, you feel like
- 36:12it's your favorite 1. You feel like it's the closest
- 36:13to you, the most you. But like I remember you have
- 36:16your song touching you, which you said you wrote when you were
- 36:19like painfully single and it was kind of talking about the love
- 36:22that you wanted, right? Like manifesting that.
- 36:24So how was like that perspective, especially coming
- 36:26in knowing that you were single, writing it, etcetera, like
- 36:28essentially fantasizing You're a little delulu about that.
- 36:31I was delulu, delulu. You got it.
- 36:32You're on the show. It was like actually more of a
- 36:36sad thing. Like I was like.
- 36:39It's so pretty, I wouldn't have guessed.
- 36:42It was like I couldn't even write the lyrics.
- 36:45It took so long to write the verse lyrics.
- 36:47Because it was like, Oh yeah, you rewrite it 6.
- 36:49Times. Yeah, I did.
- 36:50You did rewrite it 6 times, Wikipedia.
- 36:52Just kidding. Oh, wait, really?
- 36:53Oh, no. Atwood.
- 36:54Oh, that's awesome. Yeah, it was Atwood.
- 36:56Yeah. So shout out your publicist,
- 36:59because they're really going. Yeah.
- 37:01Yeah, it was. I couldn't even, like, describe
- 37:06a loving feeling. I was like, So what does it feel
- 37:08like? Like what?
- 37:09Counting the freckles on your chest.
- 37:11So gorgeous, by the way, that's such a beautiful lyric, like so
- 37:15visual and love how was delivered like that's that's a
- 37:18such a stunning 1, you know? Yeah, I I just like, it was
- 37:23hard, but then, Oh my God, it's playing in the background.
- 37:26That's so funny. Manifested, yes, that's so
- 37:28funny. But yeah, it was more of a sad
- 37:30place than a manifestation place.
- 37:32Yeah, but you wanted to be open to falling in love again.
- 37:34Exactly. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 37:36And I feel like speaking about things like that really welcomes
- 37:39in that energy. Yes.
- 37:40Yeah, and you want to be on that vibration, you know, you want to
- 37:43be there. I got it.
- 37:44OK cool. So like the first EPS, EP 1.1,
- 37:48EP 1.2, like they don't feel as you as like you would hope for
- 37:51it. Like where do you stand with
- 37:52those? Like, I'm curious because I know
- 37:53you write all your own songs. I read your credits, you know.
- 37:55I love the whole 16 like I. So it is Dunzies.
- 38:02It's super dunzies all 16 Yes and mix and mastered.
- 38:07I feel like you give me like a mix of like early Lana and
- 38:10modern Lana. Yeah, really, genuinely.
- 38:13Yeah. It's giving Lana.
- 38:15I feel like it's Lana coded. Like I just feel like, by the
- 38:17way, I'm not even that in depth with Lana Del Rey, but like feel
- 38:19like whatever I've heard it feels like cinematic, lush and
- 38:23like like the world building aspect of it, you know?
- 38:25Wait, thank you. I've never actually gotten
- 38:27someone that compared me to Lana, but I personally kind of
- 38:30yeah. See it?
- 38:30Yeah. Because your influences are
- 38:32Elton John, you know, Apple, other people whose names I can't
- 38:34pronounce. So like, also, I'm not.
- 38:36I don't. I'm not familiar with those
- 38:38artists. But now I am.
- 38:40Yeah. OK.
- 38:41That's really good. But I feel like they're all like
- 38:43near and dear to me, even the ones I mean they're EP3 like.
- 38:48I'm really excited for her then. Yeah, yes.
- 38:50Oh my gosh. OK, so like EP 1.3, this one
- 38:53that's coming out that's going to precede before we finish off
- 38:56the thing. So you finished the.
- 38:57When did you finish the project? The entire album.
- 39:04Like dude, this song's a year and a half.
- 39:06I like this song. Thanks.
- 39:09Like a year and a half ago all the songs were done and then we
- 39:14actually did some finishing touches on one of the songs in
- 39:17EP 1.4 a month ago. Like it poof.
- 39:22So how do you feel now that you don't have to record it anymore,
- 39:24especially with the voicing? Do you feel relieved or do you
- 39:27miss going in and working on the music?
- 39:29I miss it so much. It's like the biggest, yeah,
- 39:32biggest part of my life and writing.
- 39:35Like I feel like I can't not can't, but I'm such a melody
- 39:39driven person, even though maybe my lyrics suggest otherwise.
- 39:42But I mean no. We can use melody though.
- 39:43Yeah. Yeah, I mean, that's just as
- 39:45important. And I haven't been able to write
- 39:48a melody because I'm like gonna wanna record it on my phone.
- 39:51And then I'm like, not that slay at piano yet.
- 39:54I'm learning, but I can't. I'm gonna lose it if I try to
- 39:57clunk it out on a piano. Would like maybe a hum be
- 40:01sufficient do you think? It's tricky.
- 40:04Don't push yourself because honestly, especially 'cause
- 40:07you're getting in a better place.
- 40:08Like I wouldn't push yourself. Yeah, but I miss.
- 40:11It so much. I know I'm.
- 40:13So relieved just recorded because if it wasn't I like I
- 40:16Can't Sing right now so. Girl, are you nervy because
- 40:18you're performing at Lollapalooza this year?
- 40:20Yes, I'm I'm sweating. Oh my gosh, just do you think
- 40:23your voice will be fine by then though?
- 40:24That's in like 3. Months.
- 40:24I'm gonna make it fine by then. Yeah.
- 40:26Like, are you excited though? I am excited.
- 40:29OK, excited, more excited or more?
- 40:30Nervous. I'm more excited to be honest.
- 40:31Yeah, and congratulations, Massive what?
- 40:35I'm so excited. My first festival and yeah, it
- 40:38just happened. So like, naturally, yeah.
- 40:40Like it was just so last artist on the lineup, first on stage.
- 40:45Oh my God, go off girl. Like hello, what are you opening
- 40:48with? I don't know set list yet.
- 40:51OK. But you'll be healed by then.
- 40:53You're gonna. Slay it.
- 40:54I'm like, it's my full mission to heal by then, yeah.
- 40:57EP3 will be out by then, right? Yeah.
- 40:59OK, cool. Or like maybe there's.
- 41:01Like one more song that'll be left, Who knows.
- 41:03But yeah. OK.
- 41:05We'll discuss in the marketing meeting after this, of course.
- 41:07OK cool. Yay, that's super exciting.
- 41:10I love a man ran by a woman. I think my favorite is Kikatas.
- 41:20No. I did that one on purpose.
- 41:22OK, good, because that was so much worse than your first try
- 41:26and your second. OK, that is my favorite.
- 41:29Though I love kikatas too, girl. You're gonna make me lose my
- 41:32fucking voice like I'm the same. What?
- 41:36Please heal me. I also lost my voice for a while
- 41:38and I was when I was recording my songs during it, I was like
- 41:40Oh my God, I hate my life. We.
- 41:41Have to talk about that, you do. I can hear it.
- 41:44That's why I asked you. I was like, cuz when I hear
- 41:45those songs I recorded when my voice was gone, I'm like, I can
- 41:47genuinely hear it. Like I don't hear my voice being
- 41:50as healthy as it needs to be. But I also kind of like the rasp
- 41:53and I'm like. Yeah, that's crazy.
- 41:54Yeah, I'm like, oh, give a little edge, but I love the
- 41:58outro on that. I love what you do.
- 42:00Like honestly, it's really interesting where you go with
- 42:01your production. And also it's just like with the
- 42:03soundscape of your music. I think the way you play around
- 42:06and the way you're performing it and the way that the music is
- 42:08just like, it's unexpected, but it's also so pleasant and nice.
- 42:12Like I keep going back to that outro.
- 42:14It's so good. And you also did it on
- 42:16Narcissist as well. Yes, yes.
- 42:18Wanna hear something crazy? Spill.
- 42:20Actually improved that outro. Shut the hell up on cicadas.
- 42:23Yeah, no fucking way. It was like I was.
- 42:25Like, what was it, Jake? It was.
- 42:27I mean, I improved the melody. I don't think that was like a
- 42:29one take that ended up on the record did.
- 42:31You get yourself down. No.
- 42:33It's got so much deeper. Wait, it's like.
- 42:37Maybe there's like, oh, Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 42:41Yeah, that one. Literally don't know my song
- 42:45not. You gaslighting me.
- 42:46And so I was like, wait. That's so funny, I thought you
- 42:48meant like the post chorus before the outro, no?
- 42:50No, no, straight up like the last 20 seconds.
- 42:52Fully forgot that part even existed in the song.
- 42:54No, I love that. Right.
- 42:55Yeah, yeah, it is pitched out, man.
- 42:56It's so pitched out. OK, I was like, am I being
- 42:59ghastly? This is so crazy.
- 43:00No, I just like, you know, shape shift.
- 43:02You were just like that was that's my voice.
- 43:04Why? Like what are you talking about?
- 43:07What's wrong with it? Do I sound weird?
- 43:09That's crazy. No, I love that that's.
- 43:11We're good. Wow so I just like did a little
- 43:14brag and it wasn't even. No, go off flex it.
- 43:18So you, you, you improvised, No. Stop talking about it.
- 43:21No. OK well let's move on to a man
- 43:24written by a woman. What a beautiful fucking song.
- 43:26Where did that come from? You rewrote the verses 6 times
- 43:29with your Co writer. Yeah, was touching you and man
- 43:31written by a woman. Big fan of urine core.
- 43:34So that song I'm like urine core, like you're yearning urine
- 43:38core, you know what I mean? I feel like urine pop is my
- 43:41favorite so I love that one. I'm I'm a really big lyric
- 43:45person. Like how you're talking about
- 43:46melody. I really love lyric and I feel
- 43:48like these are all so well written because I was like
- 43:51looking at it when I was listening and I was like love
- 43:53gag. Really well done.
- 43:55So this one you rewrote the verses 6 times.
- 43:58Like what? Was going on here this is like
- 44:02kind of embarrassing but I I feel like I'm chronically
- 44:05offline so. So oppo from the early days back
- 44:10when we were on mag con. Mag con vine all yes,
- 44:13everything. Jack and Jack and Nash miss us.
- 44:16They they do. They miss us dearly.
- 44:18They they think about those pictures that we took about.
- 44:20They do yes. They release 2 cigarettes for
- 44:23us. They yes.
- 44:26But I was on TikTok and I was like in a comment section which
- 44:30sometimes I get song ideas from a TikTok comment section.
- 44:34That's a place to find. It's like people go off.
- 44:36I don't like copy but like if they say like something.
- 44:39If there's a bar bar, yeah. Like this someone said, man,
- 44:45it's just like seems like you need a man run by a woman.
- 44:47And I was like, Oh my God has two likes like that's insane.
- 44:49Like I'm literally going. To wait, that was kind of I was
- 44:52like, she. Ate with that Like I've never
- 44:55heard that before. Yes, little did I know it's like
- 44:58a thing. I haven't heard it before but
- 45:00tell you. Well, good.
- 45:01You're the originator. Coming up on my page now because
- 45:05I like have the the song, but I'm like, I totally thought this
- 45:09woman coined it. I was going to give her credit.
- 45:11And then like I heard it. I was like, oh.
- 45:13You know, that's how Lizzo wrote.
- 45:15Good as hell. I think she was like, she said
- 45:16she saw a comment that was like hair toss, check me out,
- 45:19something like that. And she did go to house.
- 45:20So that's really interesting. Yeah.
- 45:23I sometimes I see banger tweets and I'm like, I'm just gonna,
- 45:26I'm gonna bookmark that. Bookmark it.
- 45:28Yeah, bookmark that. We might see her again.
- 45:30Yeah, we might see her again and.
- 45:31It's nice because it's like real life, you know what I mean?
- 45:34Yeah, that's really cool. Like they found it in a TikTok
- 45:36comment. Yeah, and I was like, I hit you.
- 45:38And I was like, yes, I do need a man ran by a woman, and so do so
- 45:42many other. People and you're like, and I'm
- 45:43gonna write about it. I am.
- 45:44Yeah. Oh my God, I love that one.
- 45:46That one's so like, it just feels good.
- 45:50It just feels like, it feels like what I just did.
- 45:52Like that little sigh of relief, you know?
- 45:53It makes me feel seen. So me gets that.
- 45:56Yeah. So these EPS were leading up to
- 45:59the album, really exciting project, really cohesive world.
- 46:01Like everything's like kind of just falling together.
- 46:03Super, super pretty. And I'm really excited for the
- 46:06next one just because, like you said, it's like you're fit.
- 46:08It's the most personal 2. I would say it's quite personal.
- 46:14Do you feel like all the music under Whitney Whitney has been
- 46:16personal? No.
- 46:17Really. Yeah, it's like I have to form.
- 46:20There's so touching you was I mean, that was actually.
- 46:22Like fantasy though? Quite personal, yeah.
- 46:24There's a song called Lucky that's coming out on EP3, and I
- 46:29had nothing to write about that day.
- 46:30It was like when I was deep in the trenches of sessions and so
- 46:34I've been nothing. And I looked down at one of the,
- 46:36I was wearing mismatched socks. So I looked down at one of the
- 46:39socks I was wearing and it was the starry night.
- 46:41And I was like, I wonder like how he painted that?
- 46:44Like was it inspiration? What?
- 46:46What's the story? So then, yeah, I wrote the verse
- 46:51and I was like, that was actually originally going to be
- 46:53the chorus. It's not going to make sense
- 46:55now, but it's. Fine, I was literally like how
- 46:56do we interact with this? I don't know.
- 46:58What you're talking about I've not heard this like.
- 46:59Yes, yes. No, because in my head I was
- 47:01like, I've been there. I've moved things around.
- 47:04Yeah, yeah, but that was inspired by a sock.
- 47:09That is TikTok comments socks thesaurus is long, long
- 47:14sentences. That's where you're pulling
- 47:16everything from. But the rest of EP 3 is like
- 47:20very very me, very vulnerable. Is that exciting or scary?
- 47:27I think it's exciting. Did you sing about or write
- 47:29about the voice vocal thing? No, not yet.
- 47:33I've tried a lot of times to like write poems or even songs.
- 47:37Like while I was going through it, they never were like fire.
- 47:40But then I was crying about the voice, silently crying.
- 47:46Got to learn how to silently cry after all this.
- 47:49But this? Is the saddest thing you've ever
- 47:50said that that's your next song? Got to learn how to silently
- 47:54cry? That is it.
- 47:55That's a sentence. I should actually, Yeah, I'm
- 47:56going to write it in my notes, please.
- 47:58I'm going to be so excited. About that.
- 48:00Great, you'll get. Three points on the master.
- 48:05We'll talk about it in our meeting after the marketing
- 48:07meeting. OK, Yeah, OK.
- 48:09Thinking 0, but that could change.
- 48:11I feel like I wrote the song, so I also produced it.
- 48:14So we'll see. Yeah, we'll see.
- 48:16You signed before the show started 40% of your masters
- 48:19anyway, so we could talk about it.
- 48:20But you're right. You know, you're right.
- 48:21You're right. Contracts we know.
- 48:24But yeah, I am writing. I have this idea to.
- 48:27I'm going to explain this so badly because I haven't talked
- 48:29about this ever, but I have this idea to kind of like do like a
- 48:34speaking sort of thing while I'm still recovering.
- 48:38And I have all the lyrics for it.
- 48:39I even have like the melody, if you will, Not that there's like
- 48:42a melody, but record that. And then like I will, I'm going
- 48:48to say in the verse, like, and now I'm going to sing the chorus
- 48:51like when I'm healed or something like that.
- 48:53Yeah. So then I'm going to, yeah.
- 48:55So then I'm going to sing the chorus or whatever other parts
- 48:58when I'm healed. So that's happening.
- 49:01That is genius. I'm on board.
- 49:02I totally understood that top to bottom.
- 49:04That's really good. So you're going to start there.
- 49:05You're going to do that while you're in the situation with the
- 49:07voice. Then when you are healed, then
- 49:09you're going to come in, you're going to cut the rest.
- 49:11See, that's genius. That's meta as fox.
- 49:12I like meta songwriting. I really like meta songwriting.
- 49:15I like things. I acknowledge that this is a
- 49:16song I write about. I write that all the time where
- 49:18I'm like, now I'm writing about you in the lyric.
- 49:20Like that's what I like, you know what I mean?
- 49:21Like it's just that's exciting just as an artist in general.
- 49:25OK, that is big sleigh. I love how we are your spiritual
- 49:28awakening. We're correcting on Wikipedia,
- 49:30but how delulu are you? I ask every guest who come on
- 49:35the show what their most delulu take is like.
- 49:37What is the craziest thing you believe could be silly,
- 49:40controversial, serious, whatever whatever is like the most insane
- 49:44Whitney Whitney thought you have you got lots of.
- 49:47Them that's so it's so crazy because like last night I was
- 49:51like because I didn't get the questions beforehand.
- 49:53So I was like I. Wonder not my fault.
- 49:54For some no, no, no, no one's fault, no one's fault.
- 49:56And I was like excited to go in cold, but but I was thinking
- 50:02like, Oh my God, what if he asked me that exact question?
- 50:05I like haven't because I wow. And I like was like, no, he's
- 50:08not going to do that. No, I didn't so.
- 50:11Did you, did you prepare? No, no, just in.
- 50:13Case I like literally thought of so many things that were just
- 50:15way too far to say and I just so how about I go with I don't
- 50:22think Selena Gomez is Selena Gomez and that's like a kind of
- 50:27that kind of blew up on the Internet like a month ago.
- 50:29That is so crazy. Bro, she's not the same.
- 50:31Was that a natural thought you came up with, or do you see a
- 50:34conspiracy? No, I've not.
- 50:36Seen this conspiracy? Really I should give I'm
- 50:39chronically not online me chronically not.
- 50:41Online but like I'm sometimes I fall into the rabbit holes of
- 50:45like the conspiracy theories that are like more fun rather
- 50:48than like. That is, that is the craziest
- 50:51thing anyone's ever said on the show.
- 50:53I so mean that. I'm so I'm so I I don't have a
- 50:59take on that. That's OK.
- 51:00You out to Lulu me. You out to Lulu me.
- 51:04I would mine was Nash Grier would be a Whitney.
- 51:06Whitney is a Whitney Whitney fan.
- 51:08You never know. He is coming in Lollapalooza to
- 51:10see you. He might be outside right now.
- 51:13He is outside right now. He stalks me.
- 51:14With the kakadas. The Kakadas?
- 51:17Good guess. OK, that was pretty Lulu, Yeah.
- 51:20I'll send you some videos. Oh my.
- 51:23God. OK, yes, I'll dive into that.
- 51:25No, like it's I'm 100% convinced you're.
- 51:27Gonna have to send me the videos.
- 51:28Send me the videos, I'll watch the videos.
- 51:30I'll watch the videos. OK so we also close every show
- 51:34by manifesting together. This was so much fun and I love
- 51:36yapping with you and wish we could yap so much more but you
- 51:38know I don't want to lose my voice.
- 51:40You got it. Yeah, you got.
- 51:42Yeah, we all got a. Little Rusty, you got it.
- 51:45You got it. So with the last muster of what
- 51:47we can voice right now, what do you want to speak into existence
- 51:50here on the show? I would love to speak into
- 51:53existence my full healing and 0 pain while talking and singing
- 52:01and full vocal health by a month before Lollapalooza so I can
- 52:07rehearse properly. Yes, and it's happening.
- 52:14It's happening. It's actually happening.
- 52:16Claiming, claiming, claiming. I actually felt that.
- 52:19Me too. Bro it's actually happened, I
- 52:20know. That's dead ass I'm I'm healed.
- 52:22That is crazy. You're healed and to be honest,
- 52:24this wasn't even that bad. You're like, it was really.
- 52:26Good. Yeah.
- 52:26Am I? Did I sip my tea every few
- 52:28sentences? Yes.
- 52:29And that's why we provided the tea, yes.
- 52:33And then she also said before the show, Sir, that this is the
- 52:35best podcast she's ever been on. Or it will be.
- 52:39I definitely said those words. She said them word for word,
- 52:41verbatim. That's that's right.
- 52:43But actually, out of the two full podcasts I've done in my
- 52:47life. Yes.
- 52:50I had a great time on both. Fuck you bro PR train she's
- 52:54media train down. Damn you're a dream.
- 52:57My I know I stress my publicist out so bad.
- 52:59I just did so funny. My entire team was there, just
- 53:02did a panel and I was talking so much shit on it.
- 53:05And every time I looked up at them, they were like, they come
- 53:09up to me after. They're like, oh, so they told
- 53:11Charlie they were like, are you not going to media train Ryan?
- 53:14And Charlie was like, Ryan is media train.
- 53:16Ryan just does not care. I.
- 53:18Was like I don't care. That's just fun.
- 53:21We want to be authentic, you know?
- 53:22Of course, you got it. I'm manifesting all that for you
- 53:25too. Thanks.
- 53:26That's super slay. I'm super excited for you.
- 53:28What? Do you want to manifest?
- 53:30You're also you're healing as well.
- 53:31I want to manifest that my music keeps getting better and I keep
- 53:35loving the songs that I'm excited about them and that I
- 53:39keep working with people who make me feel good and inspired
- 53:44and excited about music because I just feel like it's so it
- 53:47could be. So you've been there, you know,
- 53:48it's like when you're working with different people and stuff
- 53:52like that, it's like you have to find your people.
- 53:54You know what I mean? You have a good team.
- 53:55I've noticed in your credits you have a lot of the same names
- 53:57along them. So like, that's great.
- 53:59That's nice. See, that's what I'm that's what
- 54:01my album is going to look like too, because it's like when you
- 54:03find the right people, I'm like, why would I want to do anything
- 54:05else? A million percent well.
- 54:07Manifesting that for you as well.
- 54:09Thank you and pop stardom, it's happening, period.
