- 0:53Speaker 1: this podcast delivered right to your phone, tablet, or computer
- 0:56Speaker 1: by subscribing wherever you get your podcasts. It's the greatest
- 1:00Speaker 1: thing since minimal traffic. Spending twenty four hours in the
- 1:05Speaker 1: New York City area is a reminder that traffic jams suck.
- 1:10Speaker 1: I lived in Boston for five years, where my ride
- 1:12Speaker 1: to work was forty eight minutes on a good day
- 1:16Speaker 1: and two hours on a bad one. So yeah, occasionally
- 1:20Speaker 1: traffic on seventy one and seventy five can be a
- 1:23Speaker 1: bit slow, But trust me, we have it great in Cincinnati.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Now let's get to Sunday's less than great performance in
- 1:32Speaker 1: the Big Apple. With rookie quarterback Zach Wilson out with
- 1:35Speaker 1: a knee injury, Mike White made his first NFL start
- 1:39Speaker 1: for the Jets. Facing one of the NFL's stingiest defenses
- 1:42Speaker 1: through seven weeks. The former Western Kentucky star went seven
- 1:47Speaker 1: for seven on New York's opening drive as the Jets
- 1:50Speaker 1: took an early lead. He's in the shotgun, he catches
- 1:53Speaker 1: the ball, It's a toss suite to the left. Michael
- 1:55Speaker 1: Carter has a haul night thing into the end zone,
- 1:58Speaker 1: touchdown New York Jets, the first time in seven games
- 2:04Speaker 1: the Jets have scored in the first quarter. White actually
- 2:07Speaker 1: completed his first eleven passes, but his streak ended on
- 2:11Speaker 1: the jets second drive, first and ten at the Bengals.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Forty five White passes and it is an accepted fuction
- 2:17Speaker 1: fate sprinting b the side, nice catch back at the
- 2:20Speaker 1: eighteen and gets tackled inside the five. They'll mark him
- 2:24Speaker 1: down at the one. Wow. It was first and goal
- 2:28Speaker 1: inside the one, but a run by Joe Mixon lost
- 2:31Speaker 1: a yard. Another run by Joe lost an additional yard.
- 2:35Speaker 1: A third down pass was dropped in the end zone
- 2:38Speaker 1: by Jamar Chase, and the Bengals decided to try for
- 2:42Speaker 1: that touchdown one more time. So rather than taking the
- 2:45Speaker 1: easy field goal, the Bengals line up to go for
- 2:48Speaker 1: it on fourth down and goal from the three. The
- 2:51Speaker 1: crowd going bananas here in New Jersey. Burrow extends the hands,
- 2:55Speaker 1: catches the shotgun snap, he's back to throw, he's in trouble,
- 2:59Speaker 1: and he gets sacks back at the fifteen yard line.
- 3:03Speaker 1: An absolute disaster for Cincinnati. After the interception by Jesse Bays,
- 3:09Speaker 1: Nieseman got the sack. And now that's just the New
- 3:12Speaker 1: York Jets. You can't play any better goal line defense
- 3:15Speaker 1: than that. It's first and goal the one. On that series,
- 3:19Speaker 1: the Jets physically dominated up front. Joe Mixon says, blame
- 3:24Speaker 1: it on locker room leaders like himself. We got to
- 3:27Speaker 1: have our team, you know, ready to go, and today
- 3:30Speaker 1: we just wasn't ready. Who came out flat? They wanted
- 3:33Speaker 1: it more and that's just what it was. Still, it
- 3:36Speaker 1: looked like the Bengals would overcome their early game duldrums.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Second down and four, the Jets at their own twenty
- 3:42Speaker 1: one White with a seven step drop. He throws it
- 3:45Speaker 1: short and it is inter second baby, he was off
- 3:47Speaker 1: the fingertips of Carter the running back, right into the
- 3:51Speaker 1: midst of a Bengals linebacker and Jermaine Pratt picks it off.
- 3:55Speaker 1: The Bengals will start from the Jets fifteen. This time,
- 3:58Speaker 1: the Bengals cashed in in the shotgun Mixon to his right,
- 4:02Speaker 1: second and goal inches away. Burrow hands it off, Mixon
- 4:06Speaker 1: runs it in the touchdown Bengals as Joe started right,
- 4:10Speaker 1: cut it back toward the middle and lunged forward for
- 4:13Speaker 1: the Bengal score that tied the game at seven, and
- 4:16Speaker 1: after stopping the Jets on their next two drives, the
- 4:19Speaker 1: Bengals took the lead. Late in a half, Burrow fakes
- 4:22Speaker 1: a handoff to Mix and, looking for an open target
- 4:25Speaker 1: scrambling left, throws for Chase. He's got it. Touchdown Bengals,
- 4:31Speaker 1: as Burrow bought time and fired a strike to the
- 4:34Speaker 1: forward left pylon, hauled in by Jomar Chase for his
- 4:39Speaker 1: seventh touchdown catch in eight games. Right, and that's just
- 4:42Speaker 1: being physical. That made it fourteen seven Bengals. And on
- 4:46Speaker 1: the jets next possession, Von Bell forced and recovered a
- 4:49Speaker 1: fumble for Cincinnati's third takeaway of the first half. With
- 4:53Speaker 1: the ball near midfield, the Bengals tried a Halloween trick
- 4:58Speaker 1: and the result was a tree. Burrow catches a chest
- 5:01Speaker 1: high snap, throws it backward for Boyd he wants to pass,
- 5:04Speaker 1: throws it across the field of mix it three blockers
- 5:07Speaker 1: show down the sideline to the thirty hand offended inside
- 5:13Speaker 1: the ten yard line. Oh Man. That forty six yard
- 5:16Speaker 1: pass made it first in goal at the seven, but
- 5:19Speaker 1: three in completions by Burrow forced the Bengals to settle
- 5:23Speaker 1: for a field goal and a seventeen seven lead. There
- 5:26Speaker 1: were less than two minutes to go in the half.
- 5:29Speaker 1: The Jets hadn't scored on their previous five drives. Mike
- 5:33Speaker 1: White promptly carved the Bengals defense up. Mike White, in
- 5:37Speaker 1: an empty backfield, catches the shotgun snap. He will plot
- 5:40Speaker 1: it toward the end zone. No pot Pie Barrios touchdown.
- 5:44Speaker 1: New York Jets that was right on the sideline and Barrios,
- 5:50Speaker 1: according to the nearest official, got two feet down for
- 5:53Speaker 1: the score that made it seventeen fourteen. His White passed
- 5:57Speaker 1: for two hundred and seventeen yards in the first half.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Here's Sam Hubbard. Yeah, it was a lot of you know, screens, misdirections,
- 6:04Speaker 1: checkdowns and forcing us to come up and get get
- 6:08Speaker 1: to a rally tackle. Um, you know, you know it's
- 6:12Speaker 1: it's really just about us. You know, we got to
- 6:14Speaker 1: make the plays to get off the field. Their game
- 6:16Speaker 1: plan was good, but um, you know, there's no excuse
- 6:19Speaker 1: for our mental errors and every single one of us
- 6:23Speaker 1: on the defense I'm speaking defensively, could have made a
- 6:26Speaker 1: play or had a mistake that cost us, including myself.
- 6:29Speaker 1: So that's all. That's all on us. In the third quarter,
- 6:32Speaker 1: the Jets tied the game on a field goal by
- 6:34Speaker 1: Matt Amondola, and Joe Burrow went to work. A fifty
- 6:38Speaker 1: four yard pass to Tee Higgins was the key play
- 6:41Speaker 1: on a seventy five yard drive for the league. Burrow
- 6:44Speaker 1: back to throw in the class pick touchdown pat goals
- 6:49Speaker 1: as he ran through a tackle at the two and
- 6:52Speaker 1: carried it into the end zone. For the score. Cincinnati
- 6:55Speaker 1: took a seven point lead to the fourth quarter. The
- 6:57Speaker 1: Jets kicked another field goal to make a twenty for twenty,
- 7:00Speaker 1: and Burrow answered again with another seventy five yard drive
- 7:05Speaker 1: that put the Bengals in the driver's seat. Two receivers left,
- 7:08Speaker 1: one right. Boy goes in motion. He'll line up to
- 7:11Speaker 1: the right. Burrow drops back to throw from the pocket.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Pump Fix scrambles right, keeps his eyes down field. So
- 7:16Speaker 1: yone touchdown Tyler Boy near the sideline. Burrow buying time,
- 7:23Speaker 1: and he delivers the ten yard td that made it
- 7:26Speaker 1: thirty one twenty with seven and a half minutes to
- 7:29Speaker 1: go against the league's lowest scoring team and its backup quarterback.
- 7:34Speaker 1: The next eight plays were all short passes and the
- 7:37Speaker 1: Bengals couldn't stop any of them. Mike white is Ready's
- 7:41Speaker 1: catches the shotgun, staff back to throw again, short pass
- 7:45Speaker 1: caught by Ty Johnson's logan. Wilson fails to tackle him.
- 7:50Speaker 1: He tight ropes the sideline and a pair stepped out
- 7:53Speaker 1: of bounds at the two. After review, the runner did
- 7:57Speaker 1: not step out of bounds. It is a touchsdown. Yeah.
- 8:00Speaker 1: The Jets went for two and failed it was thirty
- 8:03Speaker 1: one twenty six Bengals with four and a half minutes
- 8:05Speaker 1: to go. Here's Zach Taylor. You know that that's where
- 8:08Speaker 1: we needed a big stop. And they went down and
- 8:11Speaker 1: scored the six points to miss the two board version,
- 8:13Speaker 1: but they went down and scored, and really a stop
- 8:15Speaker 1: right there would have done it for us. And there's
- 8:17Speaker 1: a lot of misstacles on the drift, a lot of
- 8:18Speaker 1: miss tackles. In spite of everything, the Bengals were still
- 8:21Speaker 1: up by five with the ball in Burrows hands. But
- 8:25Speaker 1: even Joey franchise is human. Burrow under center on first
- 8:28Speaker 1: and ten fakes it tossed to the fuck that intercept
- 8:33Speaker 1: head Burrows pass was batted up in the air and
- 8:36Speaker 1: Shock Losson picks it off at the Cincinnati fourteen yard line.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Oh man, that's about the third or fourth deflection. And
- 8:46Speaker 1: what you don't want to have happen is that the
- 8:48Speaker 1: Bengals defense needed to hold the Jets to a field
- 8:51Speaker 1: goal try two receivers left, three right, White catches the shotgun,
- 8:55Speaker 1: snaff cocks the arm clicking left throws into the twk
- 8:59Speaker 1: by Tyler Crows for a touchdown to get the Jets
- 9:02Speaker 1: the lead with three forty five to go, White open
- 9:05Speaker 1: broken coverage a Keen Davis Gaither trying to react back,
- 9:09Speaker 1: but way too late. The Jets added a two point
- 9:12Speaker 1: conversion by running the Philly Special as wide receiver Jamison
- 9:16Speaker 1: Crowder threw the ball back to the quarterback White to
- 9:20Speaker 1: make it thirty four to thirty one. Mike White finished
- 9:24Speaker 1: thirty seven for forty five that's eighty two percent and
- 9:28Speaker 1: passed for four hundred and five yards. That's the second
- 9:32Speaker 1: most yards in history by an NFL quarterback in his
- 9:36Speaker 1: first start. Cam Newton holds the record with four twenty two.
- 9:40Speaker 1: According to ESPN Stats and Information, not one of White's
- 9:44Speaker 1: thirty seven completions traveled twenty yards in the air. Here's
- 9:48Speaker 1: Joe Burrow. They really well, and you know I told
- 9:51Speaker 1: him that after the game. You know, congrats to him
- 9:54Speaker 1: for start playing that way against our defense, who's been
- 9:57Speaker 1: really really good, you know, all seasons. No congrats to him.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Nice excigning for him and his family. The Bengals still
- 10:05Speaker 1: had a chance. They were down by three with three
- 10:08Speaker 1: forty five to go. If they could get to roughly
- 10:11Speaker 1: the Jets forty, Evan McPherson would be within field goal range.
- 10:15Speaker 1: But after driving to the fifty, the Bengals had to
- 10:18Speaker 1: punt and never got the ball back. They stopped the
- 10:22Speaker 1: Jets on third and eleven with one fifty three to
- 10:24Speaker 1: go and all of their time outs left, but Mike
- 10:27Speaker 1: Hilton was called for a questionable helmet to helmet hit
- 10:31Speaker 1: that allowed the Jets to run out the clock. Here's
- 10:34Speaker 1: Jesse Bates on the penalty. We were told not to
- 10:36Speaker 1: speak on that, but I mean you'll see that play.
- 10:40Speaker 1: You'll turn on any game in this whole world. You'll
- 10:43Speaker 1: see that same exact play and covered two happens at
- 10:46Speaker 1: least ten times a game. The final score New York
- 10:48Speaker 1: thirty four, Cincinnati thirty one. The players and coaches said
- 10:53Speaker 1: all the right things during the week about respecting the
- 10:55Speaker 1: Jets and avoiding a letdown, but still allowed it to
- 10:59Speaker 1: have happened. Here's Sam Hubbard. I mean, you can talk
- 11:02Speaker 1: about all you want, Um, you know, until it happens.
- 11:06Speaker 1: You know, it's doesn't seem real, Like still doesn't seem real,
- 11:09Speaker 1: but um, you know it's it happened. No matter what
- 11:12Speaker 1: you say, it's all about what you do. So that's
- 11:15Speaker 1: that's the reality of the situation. After the game, Tyler Boy,
- 11:19Speaker 1: Jesse Bates and Joe Mixon did something highly unusual. They
- 11:23Speaker 1: walked into the press room together. You know, we take
- 11:25Speaker 1: full responsibility for how we play. You know. I just
- 11:28Speaker 1: felt like like Joe was saying, like the message, um,
- 11:32Speaker 1: then correlate to what we want to go out there
- 11:34Speaker 1: and do you know? But um, I don't. I'm not worrying.
- 11:37Speaker 1: I know these guys not wearing either. We know what
- 11:39Speaker 1: type of a team we are. You know, we're not personally.
- 11:43Speaker 1: I think we came out flat, but I think we
- 11:45Speaker 1: turned up after the first quarter offensively, you know. But
- 11:48Speaker 1: um again, they they they played a great game. But
- 11:52Speaker 1: at the end of the day, we know we're a
- 11:53Speaker 1: better team. I think we came up here together because
- 11:55Speaker 1: these are guys that's been here. We've been through the
- 11:58Speaker 1: bad part of this, you know, organization, and we know
- 12:02Speaker 1: that we got the right guys in here to do
- 12:03Speaker 1: the right thing. So hopefully the coaches can just continue
- 12:07Speaker 1: to believe in us as players and as players put
- 12:10Speaker 1: it out there on the field. So we're excited, Like
- 12:12Speaker 1: I said, we're gonna go into next week to do
- 12:14Speaker 1: what we want to do. We gotta win our division
- 12:17Speaker 1: and that's going through and knowing the division going into
- 12:19Speaker 1: a bide weekend will be huge. So, like I said,
- 12:21Speaker 1: these are my brothers, Um we get thirty four points.
- 12:24Speaker 1: I'm sure they a little pissed off about that, as
- 12:26Speaker 1: they should m But like I said, we gotta get better.
- 12:28Speaker 1: We're together, and uh I got his back, he got
- 12:31Speaker 1: my back, saying with everybody and at the end of
- 12:34Speaker 1: the day, as captains, we gotta step up. We gotta
- 12:37Speaker 1: step up as leaders, and we gotta make sure the
- 12:40Speaker 1: team following and said, we got a huge game right
- 12:44Speaker 1: in front of us coming up, and I'm sure they
- 12:47Speaker 1: just came off of a loss and they're gonna want
- 12:48Speaker 1: us just as bad as we want them. So to
- 12:51Speaker 1: be honest, like I said, we together, we know what
- 12:54Speaker 1: to expect next week. We know we gotta play better.
- 12:56Speaker 1: We gotta be better, and we would make it happen.
- 13:00Speaker 1: We gotta bounce back and we're gonna do it with
- 13:01Speaker 1: a vengeance. The Jets outgained the Bengals five eleven to three,
- 13:05Speaker 1: eighteen and one the time of possession battle by nearly
- 13:08Speaker 1: thirteen minutes. After the game, Dave Lapham spent a few
- 13:12Speaker 1: minutes with Zach Taylor that was a tough one, man.
- 13:16Speaker 1: I mean, that's a that's a hard one to take.
- 13:19Speaker 1: I mean, particularly the way at the end of the
- 13:21Speaker 1: football game. I mean, and I know it shouldn't have
- 13:23Speaker 1: come down to that put in the officials hands, but man,
- 13:26Speaker 1: when it was put in his hands, that's a tough
- 13:28Speaker 1: call to make on Mike Hilton. I'm Mike played it
- 13:32Speaker 1: pretty well, but we shouldn't be putting ourselves in that
- 13:34Speaker 1: position for that cold matter. You know. On offense, we
- 13:36Speaker 1: left eleven points on the field and that should have
- 13:38Speaker 1: been enough to put this game wide open. Defensively or
- 13:41Speaker 1: tackling wasn't good enough. Special teams, we gave up return
- 13:44Speaker 1: before the half to put them in a position to
- 13:45Speaker 1: go score, and so we just didn't play well enough
- 13:47Speaker 1: to win on the road. Yeah, you mentioned just a
- 13:50Speaker 1: few right there. This is one of those games where
- 13:52Speaker 1: you can go back and you can find you a
- 13:54Speaker 1: myriad of things that you can say, Boy, we shouldn't
- 13:56Speaker 1: let it come down to this because of that, and
- 13:58Speaker 1: how all of that all of that works. Three takeaways
- 14:02Speaker 1: in the first half, I mean, they come in bunches,
- 14:04Speaker 1: and they came in a pretty good bunch there in
- 14:06Speaker 1: the first half. Of you. Yeah, you get three terms
- 14:08Speaker 1: in the first half, you should put a lot of
- 14:09Speaker 1: points on the board, you know, So to be on
- 14:10Speaker 1: the inch hard line come away with nothing on that
- 14:13Speaker 1: first turnover that they got Jesse's pick, and then you know,
- 14:17Speaker 1: we had another red zone third down where we should
- 14:19Speaker 1: have scored a touchdown and we didn't, you know, and
- 14:20Speaker 1: so we had to kick a field goal. And as
- 14:21Speaker 1: a four point player right there, so we should have
- 14:24Speaker 1: capitalized on those turnovers and try to put them away quickly,
- 14:27Speaker 1: and we didn't. The running game, or lack there of, obviously,
- 14:30Speaker 1: was a huge factor in the football game. It was.
- 14:32Speaker 1: It wasn't really much that you could lean on in
- 14:34Speaker 1: that running game, was there. Yeah, you know, they do
- 14:37Speaker 1: a good job there. Interior defensive line's pretty good. We
- 14:40Speaker 1: just never gotten a great rhythm that first quarter. We
- 14:42Speaker 1: kind of got out of there with two normal down
- 14:43Speaker 1: calls in the first quarter, and so you know that
- 14:46Speaker 1: the second third quarter we had some decent runs in
- 14:49Speaker 1: there mixed in. We felt good about some of the
- 14:51Speaker 1: stuff in the past game. We just need to score
- 14:54Speaker 1: more points. Our defense is bailed us out plenty of times,
- 14:56Speaker 1: and we need more than thirty one points today. Yeah,
- 14:58Speaker 1: that I guess that people are going to be like, well,
- 15:00Speaker 1: what's what's up with that? I mean, Mike White is
- 15:02Speaker 1: his first NFL start. He throws for over four hundred yards.
- 15:05Speaker 1: They get over five hundred yards as a as a
- 15:07Speaker 1: football team. But you saw, I mean Carter that that dude,
- 15:09Speaker 1: I mean that dude finish runs angry boy. He was
- 15:12Speaker 1: a finisher running the football. But like you said, the
- 15:15Speaker 1: tackling mechanics were less something to be desired. Yeah, they
- 15:18Speaker 1: played well in space. I thought our guys were oftentimes
- 15:20Speaker 1: a good position. Um again, I was happy that they
- 15:23Speaker 1: made those turnovers. We've been preaching that all week. We
- 15:25Speaker 1: need a big turnover game. They got us three of them.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Offense should have given more and defense got to do
- 15:29Speaker 1: a better job tackling there in second half. So schematically,
- 15:33Speaker 1: did they do anything differently than you anticipated? I mean,
- 15:36Speaker 1: I know the linebacker position got revamped on heartbeat. I mean,
- 15:38Speaker 1: you know, fifty seven comes back. That's a that's a
- 15:41Speaker 1: different deal. When he's out there on the football field,
- 15:43Speaker 1: he's a pretty good football player, as we know from
- 15:45Speaker 1: watching him in Baltimore. Their guys played hard. You know
- 15:48Speaker 1: they are in this one today. Give the credit to them.
- 15:50Speaker 1: We did do enough to get the victory, and we
- 15:52Speaker 1: gotta be able to put this one behind us pretty
- 15:53Speaker 1: quickly and refocus on Cleveland. Yeah, that's that's I guess.
- 15:56Speaker 1: The thing is the bounce back opportunity with the Cleveland Browns.
- 15:59Speaker 1: You're two and on in the division. You get Cleveland
- 16:01Speaker 1: at home and can make a you know, a big
- 16:04Speaker 1: statement in terms of division scenario with the three and
- 16:07Speaker 1: oh mark halfway through it. How how tough it will
- 16:10Speaker 1: it be for this football team. I mean, you know
- 16:12Speaker 1: them better than anybody, and you've talked about how you
- 16:16Speaker 1: know the the intangibles are so high with this football
- 16:20Speaker 1: team in terms of mentality and caring for each other
- 16:22Speaker 1: and all those kind of things. Bounce back quickly, do
- 16:25Speaker 1: you think? Yeah, that's what you're counting on, you know,
- 16:27Speaker 1: with guys leading the charge on a loss like this,
- 16:30Speaker 1: to be able to quickly refocus and get focused on
- 16:33Speaker 1: a new divisional opponent that we haven't played at the shore.
- 16:35Speaker 1: I'm confident that our guys will appreciate it. Coach, Okay, thanks,
- 16:39Speaker 1: Rounds lost at home to the Steelers on Sunday fifteen
- 16:41Speaker 1: to ten, So Cleveland will come to Paul Brown Stadium
- 16:44Speaker 1: next Sunday. With a four and four record, Baker Mayfield
- 16:48Speaker 1: is playing with an injured left shoulder that will eventually
- 16:51Speaker 1: require surgery, but if anything will make it feel better,
- 16:54Speaker 1: it's the prospect of facing Cincinnati. In six starts against
- 16:58Speaker 1: the Bengals, Mayfield is five and one with seventeen touchdown
- 17:03Speaker 1: passes and a passer rating of one to eleven point four.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Now time for postgame analysis with lab all right, Lap,
- 17:11Speaker 1: you know it's going to be said after this game,
- 17:14Speaker 1: coast to coast, the Bengals were sniffing the fumes of success.
- 17:18Speaker 1: They didn't want it enough. Whatever expression you want to use,
- 17:21Speaker 1: how fair are those criticisms today? They're going to be fair,
- 17:25Speaker 1: you know, because they had an opportunity right there waiting
- 17:29Speaker 1: for him, and they decided to push, you know, push
- 17:31Speaker 1: away from the table. They were in the table of
- 17:35Speaker 1: feast or famine, and they decided to push away and
- 17:39Speaker 1: go famine for a week. It was unfortunate. I just
- 17:42Speaker 1: keep going back to the It doesn't come down to
- 17:44Speaker 1: one play, but I just keep going back to the
- 17:46Speaker 1: Mike Hilton hit call off setting. He lowered his head,
- 17:50Speaker 1: Hilton lowered his They both lowered their head. It can
- 17:53Speaker 1: be called on a running back who lowers his head
- 17:55Speaker 1: to target on the perimeter as well. If you're going
- 17:58Speaker 1: to make a game changing call like that, don't make
- 18:01Speaker 1: it game changing one way. You know, if you thought
- 18:04Speaker 1: you saw something that looked a little if you call
- 18:07Speaker 1: it off setting, call it both ways and let the
- 18:09Speaker 1: players decide the game. But they shouldn't have been in
- 18:12Speaker 1: that position. They shouldn't have put in that's themselves in
- 18:15Speaker 1: that position anyway. But with that said, the officials, you
- 18:20Speaker 1: know you don't as an official. If I were an official,
- 18:22Speaker 1: I would not want to be the guy that, basically,
- 18:25Speaker 1: in a lot of people's opinion, determined the outcome of
- 18:27Speaker 1: the game. So and I think there was a way
- 18:29Speaker 1: around it. I call it off setting penalties. As I
- 18:32Speaker 1: look back on it, I thought it was a bad call,
- 18:35Speaker 1: no if sands or butts, But it sounds like whining
- 18:37Speaker 1: when you're on the on the wrong side of a
- 18:39Speaker 1: call like that. I thought the Jets, for lack of
- 18:41Speaker 1: a better term, were the more violent team. They were
- 18:45Speaker 1: physical upfront, they're running back ran angry. I just thought
- 18:49Speaker 1: in every way they were the team that just had
- 18:52Speaker 1: that edge more in this game. I agreed, Dan, you know,
- 18:56Speaker 1: and I give credit to the entire Jets organization, their
- 18:59Speaker 1: head coach, all these all the coordinators, all the assistance.
- 19:03Speaker 1: The Jets played like the game was more important to
- 19:06Speaker 1: them than the five and two number one seed in
- 19:08Speaker 1: the AFC, Cincinnati Bengals, And how can that be? How
- 19:12Speaker 1: can that be? So I agree with you. They came
- 19:16Speaker 1: out and after being embarrassed by the Patriots, their professional
- 19:22Speaker 1: pride was wounded and sometimes wounded animals the most dangerous
- 19:26Speaker 1: animal there is. And they were I mean they were.
- 19:29Speaker 1: They wanted to make restitution, and they played harder and
- 19:33Speaker 1: I thought they they you know, they set the tempo.
- 19:38Speaker 1: They were there. They're more physical football team, particularly at
- 19:41Speaker 1: the line of scrimmage, at both sides of the line
- 19:43Speaker 1: of scrimmage. We talked about that a bunch during the
- 19:45Speaker 1: course of the game, and I mean, you're first in
- 19:47Speaker 1: goal on the inch line and you're going backwards, come on, man,
- 19:51Speaker 1: you know just that the tone was set on that
- 19:55Speaker 1: goal line standing. I mean that that's when they got
- 19:58Speaker 1: on a score and then the reception puts them with
- 20:01Speaker 1: their backs against the wall and they said, we're fine.
- 20:04Speaker 1: I mean that that sent at that point, you know,
- 20:08Speaker 1: or you should know, you have a fight on your hands.
- 20:11Speaker 1: And and you know, I got the Bengals righted themselves
- 20:15Speaker 1: and took double digit leads more than once in the game.
- 20:18Speaker 1: Got to give the Jets credit, though, they came back
- 20:20Speaker 1: and won the football game. And that's a nature abuse
- 20:24Speaker 1: in the National Football League. I know, I said it
- 20:26Speaker 1: a bunch during the broadcast. What I gotta say it again.
- 20:29Speaker 1: I cannot believe they had three takeaways in the first
- 20:32Speaker 1: half and scored fourteen points because the takeaways were short field.
- 20:36Speaker 1: I mean camping in shorter field in this side, in
- 20:38Speaker 1: the one yard line and then they're inside the twenty
- 20:40Speaker 1: again in the red zone on a takeaway. You know,
- 20:46Speaker 1: to throw away short field field position opportunities like that
- 20:52Speaker 1: are going to come back to bite you. And it
- 20:53Speaker 1: bit them squarely on the cheeks. So Mike White in
- 20:57Speaker 1: his first start passed for four hundred and five yards.
- 21:00Speaker 1: The Jets had five twelve. As a team, they came
- 21:02Speaker 1: in averaging about two seventy five. Nobody saw that coming
- 21:06Speaker 1: against the Bengals defense that's really been great in the
- 21:09Speaker 1: first seven weeks. What was the biggest problem was it
- 21:12Speaker 1: tackling after the short passes. What stood out to you
- 21:15Speaker 1: the most from a bad standpoint on defense, I think
- 21:18Speaker 1: it was that. I think it was tackling, and again
- 21:21Speaker 1: that that's want too. You know, they wanted to break
- 21:24Speaker 1: tackles more than we wanted to tackle. It looked like,
- 21:26Speaker 1: I'll tell you what, Carter. I mean, that guy, man,
- 21:30Speaker 1: he's a little dynamoll, five eight over twound pounds. I mean,
- 21:34Speaker 1: if he's six feet tall, he's two twenty. He's a
- 21:36Speaker 1: he's a physical guy. He's short, but sometimes that can
- 21:40Speaker 1: be to your advantage. And man, in space, they were
- 21:44Speaker 1: the much better football team in space the whole day,
- 21:46Speaker 1: no question about it. And I give White credit for
- 21:50Speaker 1: hitting guys in stride though. I mean he realized what
- 21:54Speaker 1: he's gotten Carter and never made him turn for the ball,
- 21:58Speaker 1: stopped for the ball. He just sometimes those those passes.
- 22:02Speaker 1: You talked to a lot of quarterbacks, those those swing passes,
- 22:04Speaker 1: you know you have to put them in just the
- 22:07Speaker 1: right spot, and he did time after time after time.
- 22:10Speaker 1: It really was incredible. And talking to guys in the
- 22:13Speaker 1: locker room out of the game, I mean, it wasn't
- 22:15Speaker 1: anything that surprised them. He did it the week before
- 22:17Speaker 1: he checked it down seventeen times. They knew what they
- 22:19Speaker 1: were looking at. But these guys were great, not just good,
- 22:24Speaker 1: they were great after the catch, run after catch was phenomenal.
- 22:28Speaker 1: If you had told me before the game that the
- 22:30Speaker 1: Bengals would score thirty one points, I would have predicted
- 22:33Speaker 1: they would win by at least two touchdowns. I'm still
- 22:37Speaker 1: a little shocked that thirty one was not enough to
- 22:40Speaker 1: get it done against this team. I agree. I agree
- 22:43Speaker 1: with you wholeheartedly. And you know it's it's mind blowing. Really,
- 22:50Speaker 1: a team that hadn't given up twenty five all year
- 22:52Speaker 1: long gives up thirty four to a team that was
- 22:56Speaker 1: averaging thirteen points a game, and like you said, two
- 22:58Speaker 1: hundred and seventy plus yards and they get five hundred.
- 23:01Speaker 1: I mean they doubled down or tripled down on things.
- 23:05Speaker 1: So it's just like, as the old saying goes, you
- 23:10Speaker 1: just you never know. You stay around long enough, you're
- 23:14Speaker 1: going to see things in the National Football League you
- 23:16Speaker 1: didn't think you'd see. And that's why it's such an
- 23:19Speaker 1: exciting sport. It's the number one sport in the country
- 23:21Speaker 1: because of a lot of it is because of the
- 23:24Speaker 1: uncertainty of it. It really is. And I feel my
- 23:29Speaker 1: heart was breaking in the locker room for these guys
- 23:32Speaker 1: because you know, they put themselves in a really good
- 23:34Speaker 1: position beat in Baltimore like they did, and they just
- 23:37Speaker 1: gave it all back by throwing it away to the Jets.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Now it's going to be the burdens on them to
- 23:43Speaker 1: do what the Jets did. The Jets got embarrassed by
- 23:46Speaker 1: a division rival, and they came back and put it
- 23:50Speaker 1: on the Bengals. The Bengals get embarrassed by a one
- 23:52Speaker 1: in five football team, and now they get Now they
- 23:56Speaker 1: get an opportunity to go three and o on the division.
- 24:00Speaker 1: At the halfway point, you know, of six division games,
- 24:04Speaker 1: they could be undefeated. And that's what they have to
- 24:06Speaker 1: focus on now. And that's what guys were talking about
- 24:08Speaker 1: putting this aside and getting onto that. But I've found
- 24:12Speaker 1: you got you gotta let you have to suffer by
- 24:15Speaker 1: this for a little bit at least tonight. You have to.
- 24:17Speaker 1: You have to miss some sleep tonight, and hopefully a
- 24:19Speaker 1: lot of guys will because they should. I know I would.
- 24:22Speaker 1: I wouldn't. I wouldn't even be able to close my
- 24:24Speaker 1: eyes tonight. My eyesballs would be two movie projectors, just
- 24:29Speaker 1: looking at everything man and thinking through things, and these
- 24:34Speaker 1: kind of games, they're tough on you. They are tough.
- 24:37Speaker 1: First place was fun while it last. Did the Bengals
- 24:40Speaker 1: fall a half game behind Baltimore. The Ravens are idol
- 24:42Speaker 1: Since the Steelers won in Cleveland, the brow and shockingly
- 24:46Speaker 1: are in last place in the division. They're coming to
- 24:48Speaker 1: Paul Brown's stadium next week and look out for the resurgence.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Steelers given up for dead early this year. Just like that,
- 24:54Speaker 1: they're a game over five hundred and breathing down the
- 24:56Speaker 1: Bengals next. When you got a defense like that and
- 25:00Speaker 1: a quarterback that's got the tracker that that quarterback has,
- 25:04Speaker 1: that's that's That's two pretty good ingredients for a pretty
- 25:07Speaker 1: good recipe. And yeah, you can never count them out.
- 25:12Speaker 1: All I can say is anybody in the division is alive.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Nobody's worse than five hundred. It's gonna be a dog
- 25:19Speaker 1: fight to the end down the stretch, and teams are
- 25:22Speaker 1: going to be knocking each other off left and right.
- 25:24Speaker 1: I mean it's going to be it's gonna be like
- 25:27Speaker 1: the old AFC North days where guys beat each other
- 25:29Speaker 1: up and be a physical division. I know one thing
- 25:33Speaker 1: this Cleveland Brown's offensive line's no joke. The Jets offensive
- 25:38Speaker 1: line took care of business. If they think that's the
- 25:41Speaker 1: best they're going to see, they're going to see a
- 25:43Speaker 1: better one next week. Those guys do not mess around.
- 25:46Speaker 1: And if you think that, and I don't want to
- 25:51Speaker 1: diminish you know what Carter did. He's great. They got
- 25:56Speaker 1: two of the best running backs in the league if
- 25:58Speaker 1: they're back. If they're they get two of the best
- 26:01Speaker 1: in the league. And I think for the division game
- 26:03Speaker 1: they probably will be would not shock me. And they
- 26:06Speaker 1: have the best tanem of edge rushers in the league.
- 26:10Speaker 1: They got a lot of components. You know, they might
- 26:12Speaker 1: be they might be four and four, but they're a
- 26:17Speaker 1: good football team and the Bengals are gonna The Bengals
- 26:19Speaker 1: already realized they're a good football team. And that's just
- 26:22Speaker 1: life from the National Football League. Bengals are an early
- 26:26Speaker 1: two and a half point favorite for Sunday's game against Cleveland.

- 26:51Speaker 1: Now time for this week's fun Facts segment, where you
- 26:53Speaker 1: get to know the person under the pads. Time to
- 26:57Speaker 1: some fun facts with defensive Lineman cam sample from Snellville, Georgia,
- 27:01Speaker 1: not too far from Atlanta. Tell us a little bit
- 27:04Speaker 1: about where you grew up. Was it city, suburbs, country,
- 27:08Speaker 1: and what were some of the things you're into when
- 27:10Speaker 1: you're a kid. Yeah, definitely, I'll probably say it's right
- 27:12Speaker 1: that fine line between city and suburb. You know, downtown
- 27:15Speaker 1: is probably fifteen twenty men's away, but it's not, you know,
- 27:17Speaker 1: in the heart of Atlanta, So I mean it's different
- 27:19Speaker 1: some of the stuff I'm into. I mean I was
- 27:21Speaker 1: really neither playing ball and hanging out with friends, so
- 27:23Speaker 1: you know, real a bad just like to have fun.
- 27:26Speaker 1: Right after the draft, you said something that I thought
- 27:29Speaker 1: was great. You were speaking to reporters and you said
- 27:32Speaker 1: about your parents, this is just as much their accomplishment
- 27:36Speaker 1: as mine. Can you articulate what they did to help
- 27:39Speaker 1: you get here? Yeah, I mean, hats off to them.
- 27:42Speaker 1: My parents got the voice when allars two and you know,
- 27:44Speaker 1: growing up, I've seen a lot of situations that gets
- 27:46Speaker 1: really ugly for the kid in the relationship. But I mean, again,
- 27:49Speaker 1: hats off to them. They really came together, made it
- 27:51Speaker 1: work for me, were there with me every step of
- 27:53Speaker 1: the way. So I mean they raised me up, brought
- 27:55Speaker 1: me as far as that's what I'm saying, it's all
- 27:57Speaker 1: of our accomplishment. For sure. We're doing fun facts with cams. Sample.
- 28:00Speaker 1: You attended Shiloh High School, the alma mater of former
- 28:03Speaker 1: Bengal David Pollock, but despite earning all region honors, you
- 28:07Speaker 1: were not recruited by the powerhouse schools in the South.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Was that a big disappointment at the time, I mean, yeah, definitely.
- 28:14Speaker 1: Growing up, you know, you um watching college football. You
- 28:16Speaker 1: know you see the big time programs. You know that's
- 28:18Speaker 1: every kid's dream to get recruited by one of those.
- 28:20Speaker 1: But my high school coach at the time said, you know,
- 28:23Speaker 1: it just controlled your control. So I went out there
- 28:25Speaker 1: playing my butt off to have the offers I took.
- 28:28Speaker 1: You know, I feel like two of was my best opportunities.
- 28:30Speaker 1: So I just put my head down them and right
- 28:31Speaker 1: back to work once I got there. So as you
- 28:34Speaker 1: mentioned you wound up going to Tulane, one of the
- 28:36Speaker 1: most prestigious academic institutions in the country, and you madejored
- 28:40Speaker 1: in finance. What was the hardest course you took a
- 28:43Speaker 1: two Lane man? About everyone when you get in the
- 28:46Speaker 1: business world, it's a really hard school. I mean, you
- 28:49Speaker 1: know they it definitely tests you. Um, you know, you
- 28:51Speaker 1: have all everything going on with football. They have a
- 28:53Speaker 1: you know, a rigorous academic program like that definitely kept
- 28:56Speaker 1: getting your toes a bunch of long nights by me.
- 28:58Speaker 1: Shout out to the academic staff there. Can you know
- 29:00Speaker 1: they helped me get through it. So New Orleans is
- 29:03Speaker 1: one of my favorite places to visit with the nightlife
- 29:06Speaker 1: and the French Quarter and the music and the food.
- 29:08Speaker 1: As a two Lane student, do you get to enjoy
- 29:11Speaker 1: that stuff? Man? That that's part of the selling process
- 29:14Speaker 1: with two Lane man. You know the city, I mean,
- 29:16Speaker 1: it's a it's a culture I'm like none other. I say,
- 29:18Speaker 1: if you haven't been there, you got to go out there.
- 29:19Speaker 1: The foods different, their culture is different. Monte Grass second
- 29:22Speaker 1: line and all that. I mean, it's definitely a full
- 29:24Speaker 1: experience going to two Lane for four years. So you
- 29:27Speaker 1: were apparently two hundred and thirty five pounds when you
- 29:29Speaker 1: got there and you're about two hundred and seventy five pounds. Now,
- 29:33Speaker 1: was it an easy transformation for you or did you
- 29:36Speaker 1: have to eat even when you weren't hungry? Um? Yeah,
- 29:38Speaker 1: you know, I didn't even really try the game away.
- 29:40Speaker 1: It doesn't actually happened. I mean, I guess with the
- 29:42Speaker 1: Way program there, how much food they're giving us, and
- 29:45Speaker 1: then just the food in New Orleans period, I mean,
- 29:47Speaker 1: I mean it's kind of hard not to gainway there.
- 29:49Speaker 1: So I mean I just grew into it, and I
- 29:50Speaker 1: mean I just accepted, you know, me changed positions once
- 29:53Speaker 1: the Way can After your senior year of two lane,
- 29:56Speaker 1: you got invited to the Senior Bowl and you knocked
- 29:58Speaker 1: it out of the park. You re name the defensive MVP.
- 30:01Speaker 1: How much did that week change your life? That we
- 30:04Speaker 1: probably did more for me that I can probably even
- 30:06Speaker 1: realize right now. I mean, just because the big knock
- 30:09Speaker 1: on me coming out was I mean, he did he
- 30:11Speaker 1: had a great career at two lane, a great senior year,
- 30:13Speaker 1: but can he do it against power five opponents all week?
- 30:15Speaker 1: So I mean that senior ball really took that. As
- 30:17Speaker 1: our punities show everybody what I could do, and like
- 30:19Speaker 1: you said, I had a great week and it just
- 30:21Speaker 1: you know, projected me very well coming into the draft.
- 30:23Speaker 1: The Bengals were obviously impressed. They selected you in the
- 30:26Speaker 1: fourth round. Describe your draft experience. The draft experience was great. Um.
- 30:31Speaker 1: I was at home in Atlanta, had a couple of
- 30:33Speaker 1: close friends, some family members there. You know, We're just
- 30:35Speaker 1: sitting around waiting for the call and then you know,
- 30:38Speaker 1: when it finally came and vibrating, I mean, everything just
- 30:40Speaker 1: kind of went slow from me, like, man, this is it.
- 30:42Speaker 1: So answered the phone as coach Taylor in there saying,
- 30:45Speaker 1: you know, Cam, and you're ready to be a bank
- 30:47Speaker 1: I said, man, let's get it, let's go. So, I mean,
- 30:49Speaker 1: it's it's really even hard to put into words the emotions,
- 30:52Speaker 1: but I mean it was a great experience. By the way,
- 30:54Speaker 1: do you have a preference between Cameron and Cam? Cam?
- 30:57Speaker 1: Cam for sure? All right, let's do some wildcard cat
- 31:00Speaker 1: theories with Cam. Sample who is your all time favorite
- 31:03Speaker 1: athlete in any sport. I'll give it to Floyd. I
- 31:10Speaker 1: just like you know he uh, I like the way
- 31:12Speaker 1: he markets himself. He hell of a box or defensive
- 31:15Speaker 1: fighter and all that. He's just it's always entertaining watching Floyd,
- 31:19Speaker 1: whether it's an interview or in the rings, I'll probably
- 31:21Speaker 1: have to say, Floyd, do you like boxing, MMA? All
- 31:24Speaker 1: types of fighting? Yeah? Yeah, I like boxing. I actually
- 31:27Speaker 1: try to tune in when I can. I'm not as
- 31:29Speaker 1: caught up on everybody, but especially the top dogs. I
- 31:31Speaker 1: definitely try to watch their fights. All right. Do you
- 31:34Speaker 1: have any hidden talents? Ooh, I don't know. If it's hitting.
- 31:38Speaker 1: I talked so much trash, but I think I'm the
- 31:39Speaker 1: best at video games on the team. I tell anybody
- 31:42Speaker 1: they want, they want them problems, they could come see
- 31:43Speaker 1: me about it. So I mean, I'm just I'm good
- 31:45Speaker 1: at video game. Now. Mixing says he's unbeatable and maddened.
- 31:49Speaker 1: Has there been a matchup? I've heard mints unbeaten. I
- 31:51Speaker 1: haven't played mad as much this year, but once I
- 31:53Speaker 1: start playing, I'll definitely go see him in the undefeated street.
- 31:56Speaker 1: Where are your games of choice? Call of Duty two
- 31:59Speaker 1: K and then Madden's probably last? All right, So if
- 32:02Speaker 1: you're grade at video games, what are you terrible at? Oh? Singing?
- 32:08Speaker 1: I cannot sing, but if my song comes on after
- 32:11Speaker 1: I'll sing my heart out, but it's not it's not
- 32:12Speaker 1: the best. I'll give him my best shot to keep
- 32:14Speaker 1: it in the shower, even in oh of course, and
- 32:17Speaker 1: as it turns into American idol in there, I gotta sing,
- 32:20Speaker 1: all right, what do you like to splurge on? What
- 32:22Speaker 1: do you spend your money on? Oh? Um, I'm a
- 32:25Speaker 1: shoe guy. I like shoes. So I mean if I
- 32:28Speaker 1: if I see a pair of shoes I like. I mean,
- 32:29Speaker 1: I'm try to find survisor. Might killy if I'm gonna
- 32:32Speaker 1: try to make it work so I can go get them.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Do you wear them or do you just display them? Both? Um?
- 32:39Speaker 1: You know, definitely, I definitely get them to wear them.
- 32:41Speaker 1: I'm just not gonna leave it up some you know,
- 32:43Speaker 1: you can't wear as much as other ones when they're
- 32:45Speaker 1: those special ones. But I like to wear my shoes.
- 32:47Speaker 1: Is there anybody in the NFL that you are particularly
- 32:51Speaker 1: excited to meet? I wouldn't say meat, I mean I'm
- 32:56Speaker 1: just excited. Um. You know, growing up watching all these
- 32:59Speaker 1: guys who have great careers and just you answer to
- 33:01Speaker 1: play against them, you know, like the Tom Brady's, you know,
- 33:04Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson. I mean, he's always just exciting to be
- 33:06Speaker 1: able to play against other good football players. Did you
- 33:09Speaker 1: know anything about Cincinnati or the Bengals before you got here?
- 33:14Speaker 1: Nothing too heavy. Chad Johnson is a very loud, you know,
- 33:18Speaker 1: proud former member of the Bengal so you know he
- 33:20Speaker 1: always brought some attention here. But I mean as I
- 33:22Speaker 1: got here, you know, I'm learning as I go for sure.
- 33:25Speaker 1: All right, this is a tough one. This is deep.
- 33:27Speaker 1: If you could meet anybody in history, athlete, actor, statesman,
- 33:32Speaker 1: religious figure, whoever it might be, who would that person be.
- 33:37Speaker 1: I'll probably have to say Martin Luther King, just because
- 33:39Speaker 1: he was a great leader, and you know he wasn't
- 33:42Speaker 1: really going with the flowid things. You know, he was
- 33:44Speaker 1: going against the grain and facing a lot of adversity.
- 33:47Speaker 1: So just to see his thought process going through that
- 33:49Speaker 1: when when things aren't looking good, I'd just love to
- 33:51Speaker 1: see where his head was at during that time. It's
- 33:53Speaker 1: an excellent choice and a great way to wrap up
- 33:56Speaker 1: our fun facts. I appreciate your time, best of luck
- 33:58Speaker 1: the rest of the effort. So no problem and having
- 34:00Speaker 1: me who here's an invitation to join lapping me on
- 34:04Speaker 1: location for the Bengals Game Plan show this Wednesday night
