- 0:00I started posting covers while being a teacher.
- 0:02My students told me to hop on TikTok and I.
- 0:05You're an early one, yeah. 2019, September, they told me to hop
- 0:08on to like, Oh yeah. And I gained 1,000,000 followers
- 0:11in four months my sophomore year or after my freshman year, being
- 0:14called a Happy Feet because I was always singing and dancing.
- 0:16That's so cute. Throughout the years, I've
- 0:19always like, if I come up with an idea, just like while
- 0:21talking, conversating, we say a word that triggers me.
- 0:23I'm like, oh, let me write that on my list.
- 0:24Yeah, I think like that day or the day before, I wrote down
- 0:26worst case scenario just as an idea.
- 0:37We. We have to start you doing that
- 0:42again please like. What in the city?
- 0:45Yes, thank you. Hi guys, welcome back to Delulu.
- 0:49Hello Guacamole Lulu, Guacamole Lulu and welcome back to Delulu
- 0:52and a special welcome Today's guesty.
- 0:54He is a massive content creator, artist, songwriter and honestly
- 0:58a modern day marketing genius. Like I need to do a case study
- 1:02on you. Thank you so much.
- 1:03The way that you promote everything is so well done and
- 1:06organic. Thank you.
- 1:07Thank you. I think you have like a massive
- 1:08team and we were talking earlier that you don't.
- 1:10No, no, it's pretty much me. I mean, I get help from some
- 1:12people. I hire videographers.
- 1:14I have my friend, he's an assistant, but like, yeah, it's
- 1:16pretty much just me out there with the ideas and we
- 1:19brainstorm. I call some people, but yeah,
- 1:22it's it's the ideating the the even like I'll Co edit and like
- 1:26you're really how you're. Doing it?
- 1:28That's crazy. Yeah, I'm.
- 1:29I'm excited to meet talented people and work with other
- 1:32people and collaborate. But yeah, I feel like I I have a
- 1:36very strong skill at delegating. So like, I know where my
- 1:39strengths are, my weaknesses. Are that's how I am too.
- 1:41Yeah. And welcome Jail.
- 1:43This is jail. Hi.
- 1:44Hi, guys. So jail actually, I was at a
- 1:47showcase, artist showcase out of their day, and you were there.
- 1:50You played some of your album and after I heard, I was like, I
- 1:52need him on the show. Yeah.
- 1:54And you sound good. Yeah, I know.
- 1:55And you actually played me the entire album right before we.
- 1:57Started. Yeah.
- 1:58Yeah, it was fun. I like the product, it's super
- 1:59cohesive. Thank you.
- 2:00Thank you. Yeah.
- 2:01So we're getting into it. This is the first time that
- 2:03you're actually putting out a full body of work because you've
- 2:06just done stand alone singles for years now.
- 2:08Like, why is this the time that this is your debut album you're
- 2:11finally doing? It, you know, I, I've just been
- 2:14kind of like tired of being told what to do as an artist.
- 2:16I think partly. Who?
- 2:18And just everybody, like I watch YouTube, I watch all the stuff.
- 2:22Everybody's like, oh, you need to get signed, you need to do
- 2:23this. And then it's like, I, I got my
- 2:265050 deal that I thought was good and it wasn't right.
- 2:29And I think like, after that I just realized like, you know
- 2:31what, like why don't I actually just be an artist?
- 2:33Like they're like, oh, it's 2025 or 2026.
- 2:36You don't release albums anymore.
- 2:38People only want singles. So I'm like, you know, I.
- 2:40Hate that so much. Let me, let me build this album
- 2:43that I want to do. Like I have so many songs that
- 2:45feel cohesive. Let's actually like focus, go
- 2:48into album mode on these and just like make the best project
- 2:51I can and you know, yeah, go from there.
- 2:53And I want to make more albums and just like really build like
- 2:57a a fan base and audience that just like, you know, enjoys my
- 3:00music and can hear stuff in context.
- 3:02Yeah. So.
- 3:02Yeah. It's finally happening.
- 3:04Yeah, it's finally happening. Because I feel like it's been
- 3:06like literally just like single after single, you promote it and
- 3:09then you do you never before wanted to like do a body of
- 3:12work. You never wanted to like.
- 3:13Feel like I've always wanted to like even the the name for this
- 3:16album. I've had that name since like I
- 3:17started doing music in 2019. I've had my album title since
- 3:212019. I have the next album title and
- 3:23like the possible third one too, so I already know that album
- 3:26title names. I just like was kind of waiting
- 3:29for the time. I think like there's always
- 3:31these rules, like, I don't know, I just heard rules like, oh, you
- 3:34don't want your first album until you blow up.
- 3:36So that way you could be Grammy nominated for, you know, like,
- 3:39like. Everyone says a bunch of shit
- 3:41like that 'cause they like, it's just like, but I don't know,
- 3:44whatever. I think in this day and age, and
- 3:46you know this better than anyone, it's like you can really
- 3:48create your own path. You can market it how you want
- 3:50to market it. Exactly.
- 3:51So with this first album and your next album, which you're
- 3:54calling Jeofication. You want to know the next album
- 3:57name? We haven't even mentioned this
- 3:59album name. What is the name of this album?
- 4:02Album name for this one is Antidepressants.
- 4:04And I love that. And it goes really perfectly
- 4:06with your brand, because Jo stands for.
- 4:08Just the young optimist. There you go.
- 4:10Yeah, and I heard the album and it's a very optimistic album.
- 4:12Thank you. I'll be one song, but yeah,
- 4:14yeah. No, when I was coming up with
- 4:16the artist named Jo, like so my name, John O'Leary is my
- 4:20government name and I'm not like hiding that at all.
- 4:22But I took my initials 'cause people call me Jo all the time
- 4:26when I was playing basketball track.
- 4:27Totally like the letters and then like my handle used to be
- 4:31like Jo Lear. And then I remember when I was
- 4:33like, I was literally just praying one day like I need an
- 4:35artist name. And then it just like came to me
- 4:37Jo and I was like, Oh well if I do Jo I need a meaning.
- 4:40And like 2 seconds later just young optimist.
- 4:42And I was like, I feel like that's the most like In Sync
- 4:46with who I. Am a million percent because
- 4:47your music sounds like that too. It's super bright and super
- 4:50optimistic. And I just feel like I'm in
- 4:52general an optimistic person. I just like.
- 4:54You are, Yeah. You're a laugher.
- 4:57We're like chatting before this. Like you are.
- 4:59Very conductions. Yeah.
- 5:00Thank you. Thank you.
- 5:01Yeah. And yeah, I I even like when I
- 5:04was, I used to be a substitute teacher and like just like so
- 5:08many people have told me like my music has helped them like feel
- 5:11joy or just even my presence. So I felt like naming my first
- 5:15album antidepressants, you know, not to say take these instead of
- 5:18like, you know, if you need an antidepressants the course, but
- 5:21but I just feel like my not a doctor.
- 5:24Yeah, exactly. I'm not a doctor, but I feel
- 5:26like my mission on this earth is to bring joy and a light to
- 5:30people. So.
- 5:30That's awesome man, you do that with your content too.
- 5:32Yeah, yeah, and everyone. Feel like everything you do is
- 5:34so intentional and it really is leaning towards like bringing
- 5:36positivity. Like it's super awesome to see.
- 5:39It's actually kind of refreshing.
- 5:40Thank you. Thank you.
- 5:41Because I feel like some of your lyrics can lean really sad too
- 5:43though. Yeah, no, definitely.
- 5:45Like it's it's funny that like my biggest song is a sad song
- 5:48technically, but right what I thought.
- 5:50But yeah, you're about. To rectify that though.
- 5:52Yeah, yeah. I mean, maybe it was.
- 5:55I got like other sad songs on the album that can go crazier.
- 5:58So. So yeah, it's it's funny if, if
- 6:00that's what works, it works because even for that song,
- 6:03people are telling me, you know, like, oh man, you really helped
- 6:06me get through this relationship.
- 6:07You really? Helped me pass it here,
- 6:08especially as an artist. Yeah, I actually need to start
- 6:10taking screenshots of it and just make a collage of like 100%
- 6:14of all the people that are impacted.
- 6:16I mean, you still can. The song's still going.
- 6:18Honestly, yeah, it is. It is.
- 6:20Yeah, you're. About to revive it too.
- 6:21We'll. Talk about it, yeah.
- 6:22Well, have you always wanted to be an artist?
- 6:25You know, it's crazy. I have like when I was four
- 6:28years old or like really young, I have like little kid tapes of
- 6:32me, like singing with a headset, singing Backstreet Boys and then
- 6:36growing up, like singing. I just like I didn't, we didn't
- 6:38know it was a possibility. My parents are, you know,
- 6:40immigrants and came from Nigeria and with Nigerian immigrants
- 6:45everywhere, you know, it's just lawyer, doctor, you know, pursue
- 6:48that path and like arts wasn't really seen as like a a job or.
- 6:52I totally understand that. Like yeah, coming from an.
- 6:54Asian upbringing, it's all out of love.
- 6:56But yeah, it's like growing up it was just like, you know,
- 6:59focus on math. I was a math or my mom was a
- 7:01math teacher and then I would focus on math and you know, I
- 7:04actually wasn't even that good at writing.
- 7:05So it's it's actually crazy that really.
- 7:07Song nurses now. Thank you.
- 7:08Yeah, No, I, I it's it's actually insane because like, I
- 7:11failed English like multiple times.
- 7:13No way. What?
- 7:14In middle school? I think I failed in high school
- 7:15and I failed in college. I had to retake it in college.
- 7:17What and you're such a good yapper though.
- 7:19It's great. Yeah.
- 7:19I'm better at communication, which is what I ended up
- 7:21majoring in. Oh God, you.
- 7:23But yeah, it's just like you don't know what it is.
- 7:25Reading comprehension. Maybe it's the ADHD just like
- 7:28the reading stuff was. Hard like all over the place.
- 7:30Yeah, like totally becoming a a teacher.
- 7:32I had to like take a grown SAT called AC Best and like I passed
- 7:37the math part with like I only missed one question which I was
- 7:39like. So you're like good at math like
- 7:40that? Really good at math English.
- 7:42I passed by one question, got it as a grown adult.
- 7:45So I was just like crazy you. Should do like this thing And
- 7:47can I recommend something maybe like in your music and your
- 7:50lyrics? I don't know if you already do
- 7:51this, but maybe you should do like some counting like maybe
- 7:54like some. Of mine I love concepts yeah I
- 7:57love concepts so I love like to to do number stuff I mean yeah
- 8:00I'll probably bring it I mean music in general if you if you
- 8:03know like. Counting just fresh you.
- 8:04Know if you play music and play instruments and like, especially
- 8:07if you know a little theory, you'll understand that there's a
- 8:09huge like synchronicity with math and music.
- 8:13Theory. Oh yeah, it's such a formula.
- 8:14He talks about that all the time.
- 8:15Like there is like a math to writing a pop.
- 8:17Song right exactly even yeah writing and playing and like
- 8:20chord progressions and all and all this stuff like there's
- 8:22there's so much like so I think that's why I like.
- 8:24Probably why you're good at it. Yeah, yeah.
- 8:26I think like, because I was late to it and it just like worked
- 8:29like growing up. Like if I go back to my story,
- 8:31my, my sister, my older sister was a track athlete Olympian.
- 8:35And like the way she got found was like in 7th grade, I guess a
- 8:41boy took her to lunch and like she hawked him down and track
- 8:44coach was like, you're on the team.
- 8:45So I guess like that's how my family saw talent.
- 8:48And when I was seeing, you know, I was singing around the house
- 8:51and stuff and like, or even in school, people just say shut up
- 8:54and all this stuff. And nobody really understood
- 8:56like, or he told me like you can learn and get better.
- 8:59I think like we all just thought it was kind of like, oh, if you
- 9:01see a singer that's amazing. They just like started that's.
- 9:03Like the expectation, yeah, honestly, that people are just
- 9:06like good singers, that you're a better artist because you're a
- 9:08good singer. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:09And I didn't, I didn't know that until like college.
- 9:12I was, I I wasn't even on track team because all my siblings
- 9:15attract in college. But I was like the weakest
- 9:16athlete on my family. I was the only one that did D2,
- 9:19everybody else's D1. But my passion was basketball
- 9:23and I chose my college baseball basketball, But my sophomore
- 9:25year or after my freshman year being called a happy feet
- 9:28because I was always singing and dancing.
- 9:29That's so cute. My my sophomore year, someone
- 9:32was like, Yo, you need to try out for gospel choir, like
- 9:34you're going to fall in love with music.
- 9:35And I was like, I don't know. And I've tried out.
- 9:37I fell in love with music and then picked up piano, guitar and
- 9:41just was on five choirs to finish out finish out college on
- 9:45a scholarship. Damn, and you're just doing it.
- 9:47Yeah. And then after I just decided
- 9:49to, my mom was like, you should, if you're going to pursue this,
- 9:51you got to be at like something that with a flexible job, be a
- 9:54substitute teacher. And I was like, that's actually
- 9:56really smart. Yeah.
- 9:57I was like, that's a genius idea.
- 9:58And I was like because I can literally call off tomorrow if I
- 10:00want and no more music or. Something.
- 10:03Yeah yeah, I started posting covers while being a teacher in
- 10:0620 shoot 2017. But 2019 my my students told me
- 10:10to hop on TikTok and I. You're an early one, yeah. 2019
- 10:15September. They told me to hop on to like
- 10:17and I gained 1,000,000 followers in four months.
- 10:19That's crazy. And then I just like.
- 10:22Was it from that was like when you're doing like comedy of the
- 10:24video, like you're doing skits, When did you start doing like
- 10:26singing on like TikTok? So so before that in 2018 while
- 10:31I was like subbing, I was started doing covers and then on
- 10:34YouTube and stuff and I grew like to like 10K on IG and like
- 10:377. K yeah, that's good.
- 10:39And like I or like 4K on YouTube, but when I first
- 10:44started posting on TikTok because my students told me to,
- 10:46they were like, you're funny. You need to show people you're
- 10:47funny. I did like A1 video got 800
- 10:50views and I was like, what? You can like get views of no
- 10:52following. That's crazy.
- 10:53Yeah. And then like I posted 2 music
- 10:55stuff. They flopped.
- 10:56So my 4th post I talked to my friend and she like was had 100K
- 11:00at the time on TikTok. She's like oh you need to do
- 11:02what people in the music faith edit it.
- 11:04He's funny. So I do it.
- 11:05This girl Fozia, who had like a viral video for countdown by
- 11:10Beyoncé the boy I. Remember that.
- 11:14And she's banging on the wall. So I do edit it as a rat in the
- 11:17wall. And that was my first video to
- 11:19hit 1,000,000 views. Yeah, that's fine.
- 11:20So like since then I was like, alright, I was just a funny
- 11:22little skits. Yeah.
- 11:23And I did like POV or the Barber.
- 11:25I can't stop staring. And that went viral like across
- 11:28every platform that is funny. I just kept doing funny stuff.
- 11:30So I gained a million off comedy and I was like, in my head,
- 11:33music isn't working. So I was like, I was still was
- 11:35making music, but I couldn't figure out how to do it on
- 11:38social media. So I spent the LAX like few
- 11:41years just trying to convert that.
- 11:42You kind of mastered that though, combining skits and
- 11:44comedy and then. Like some time.
- 11:46We're all building with it. Yeah, it took some time.
- 11:48You're like the best side of now.
- 11:49I think you're the face of like, actually marketing music.
- 11:51Yeah, Thank you. Thank you.
- 11:52That's crazy. Yeah.
- 11:53I I I still have a lot of high expectations for myself and some
- 11:57goals for myself, so that's definitely fair.
- 11:59Even better. But yeah.
- 12:00Yeah. Well, so then you start with
- 12:02like storytelling, you do the skits with TikTok.
- 12:04How did, when did you Start learning how to like bridge that
- 12:07gap between like your comedy videos and then the music thing
- 12:09you're doing? I was probably trying from like,
- 12:12because I, I went to like 2 million followers on TikTok and
- 12:15then like after that point I was like, I really want to do music.
- 12:18I'm not happy doing comedy. Like I love that I love comedy,
- 12:20but like I'm not happy with people not knowing that I'm a
- 12:24musician. So and I think part of it was
- 12:26also just making better music. But I, I do think some of those
- 12:28songs should have sent like I put, performed those songs live
- 12:31now and it's still a good, but like, I think I spent like 3
- 12:35years just really trying to get it to work like figure out
- 12:38what's that balance? Like how much of should I put
- 12:40like my song behind a comedy skit?
- 12:42Should I kind of write a skit around the song?
- 12:44Should I do like you know, I was trying to find that balance.
- 12:46How'd you figure that like strategy that ended up working?
- 12:49Honestly the first song I feel like connected music wise was a
- 12:52song called Comfortably You in 2023 and it was.
- 12:56It was funny because I it was the first time I came up with
- 12:58the video concept before the song.
- 13:00Oh really? Yeah, before writing the song.
- 13:01Yeah, I was in the shower and I was.
- 13:03Like you had a video ID. Yeah, I had that idea.
- 13:05You're. Gonna make a song around.
- 13:06I was literally like, OK, I have this idea.
- 13:08I'm like, what if I go up to somebody that's like, you know,
- 13:115-10? And I asked, hey, what's your
- 13:13height? And he's like, oh, I'm 6 foot.
- 13:14And I pull out a measuring tape and I measure and I sing a song
- 13:18about being honest. So I wrote the the hook.
- 13:21I was like, you could be honest, you could be cool comfortably,
- 13:24really uncomfortable you and then, but so the hook was still
- 13:27there. And then I still made the song
- 13:29like really vulnerable and honest about like just like
- 13:31insecurity and everything. But I wanted the so now I have
- 13:34this video idea. I went and staged that made sure
- 13:36like, you know, I did a few times just to make sure it feels
- 13:39real. And then I just did multiple
- 13:40situations of just people getting caught and it it
- 13:43actually connected. And it was first time I was
- 13:44getting like hundreds of thousands of views on like my
- 13:47music now because people are like, Oh my God, this.
- 13:50Honestly, I want to bring back this series.
- 13:51It was fun, but like, yeah, it was like it connected.
- 13:54And then I ended up having to go to Greece for my cousin's
- 13:58wedding. And we came back and my
- 14:00grandmother passed. But like, it was it was just
- 14:02like a lot of time. I didn't post after.
- 14:04And I think that's why that series fell off.
- 14:06But. Yeah, that's the thing you have
- 14:07to say. Super consistent, yeah.
- 14:09You have to say once it works, you have to stay consistent and
- 14:11it was working. And then when I try to post
- 14:13again after two months of not posting that same series, it
- 14:16didn't work. So that's the.
- 14:16Thing about momentum, like you really can't like stop like when
- 14:19you start you have to like keep going.
- 14:21Exactly. And that can be so challenging,
- 14:23too. I mean, there's so much more of
- 14:24a demand, especially as like a modern day artist with TikTok
- 14:28and like, how to market it. It's like you never stop.
- 14:30Yeah. The second it begins, you just
- 14:32have to keep it pushing. It's all about like, yeah,
- 14:34keeping, keeping the ball rolling a million.
- 14:36Once you get that spark, it's like that's just the beginning.
- 14:38A. 100% so like so yeah and then it's actually go time now in
- 14:42the. Process and I've gotten that
- 14:43spark multiple times. So now it's like, OK, how do I
- 14:45how do I won capitalize again, but also capitalize better?
- 14:48Like how do I really like funnel people better Has been my focus
- 14:51this year. Oh yeah, we were just talking
- 14:53about that. Absolutely.
- 14:54Converting people to be more loyal into like, what's
- 14:56happening to the world. You know what, what I liked
- 14:58about your project, though, was I felt like that was a cohesive
- 15:00world that you were building, especially because, like you
- 15:02said, you were just doing a bunch of singles leading into
- 15:05this new album. And now it's like, this is a
- 15:07project, this is cohesive and we want people to tap into that
- 15:10world. I'm super into like world
- 15:12building, especially of artists and albums.
- 15:14I'm really into like having people be invested in the
- 15:17artists and this album, the world that was built there.
- 15:19So like, I think that's going to be really interesting.
- 15:21You have so many more songs that you're going to be able to play
- 15:23with and make little videos about everything too.
- 15:26No, thank you. I feel like your productions on
- 15:29your videos are so like they look so big for like short form
- 15:33videos. Yeah, like big.
- 15:35Productions To the editors, I'll say Dylan has helped work with
- 15:39Tom and Zach. I've worked with Stefan Desmond.
- 15:43I've worked with like a lot of people just that have helped.
- 15:45Like do you all like creative conceptualize it or is it just
- 15:48you? For the most part I come up with
- 15:50most ideas, but I definitely bounce stuff back and forth and
- 15:53like people come up with ideas too.
- 15:54It's. So I'm going to work with three.
- 15:55People Yeah, yeah, yeah, I totally take credit for all the
- 15:57ideas, but I think it's like, you know, the very first video
- 16:01that took off a worst case scenario, I was like, I'm going
- 16:03to drop ice cream and stare at the camera.
- 16:06Like, you know, it sounds simple, but like, you know, I
- 16:08saw I saw that videographer is kind of like the way he did it
- 16:11some other videos. And I was like, OK, I bet if I
- 16:12combine my idea with this, we can make this work.
- 16:15And like, yeah, that's how it started working.
- 16:17And, you know, then we start bouncing off each other.
- 16:19We have some calls sometimes and and you know, I think like being
- 16:23able to bounce back and forth, like I understand top to bottom
- 16:27the whole editing process. So it kind of helps when we like
- 16:30ID 8 like OK, if we are going to do a green screen video, like
- 16:34what does that look like? What do we need to shoot?
- 16:35What blinks do we need to get all that stuff?
- 16:37And it helps like, yeah, it just helps bouncing back and forth
- 16:41with the videographers to get like the best product.
- 16:44How much planning goes into it before you even shoot these
- 16:46videos? Depends on the video, but
- 16:49definitely like sometimes it's like, you know, like we have a
- 16:52call and it's like, OK, I want to shoot like these five of this
- 16:54day and I just go get the props or order on Amazon and and then
- 16:59yeah, it's like sometimes it's just like we're already there,
- 17:01like effortless, just do stuff like there's actually this prop
- 17:04store that I got like a lot of my like rubber bats that I've
- 17:07hit myself in the face with or like glass regular glasses.
- 17:10It's like very sensationalized. Yeah they do like movie effects
- 17:13and stuff but sadly they they burned down in like November so
- 17:16no. Fucking way that's.
- 17:17Crazy. Yeah, that was crazy.
- 17:18I I was like trying to get a prop and that's why I found out.
- 17:20I was like, oh shit. So.
- 17:21What do you do now? They just got back soon, so
- 17:24hopefully I got to check in and see.
- 17:26But yeah, I've I'm excited to get back into being consistent
- 17:29with content and. I mean, you're working on an
- 17:32album, so I think it's understandable.
- 17:33Yeah. I think it's it's like more
- 17:34important to like make sure the art's good and make it make.
- 17:37Sense too yeah I I I started going into quote UN quote album
- 17:41mode of the songs I would say in 2023 OK the very first song I
- 17:47felt like I went album mode with was not my fault.
- 17:50That song actually has like 11 different versions.
- 17:52Interesting it's not on the album.
- 17:54No, no, no, it's not on the album.
- 17:55But it was like as far as like, because I felt like with a lot
- 17:58of other songs I would rush them.
- 18:01Like I would spend like 4 maybe 8 hours on each song like.
- 18:04Oh yeah, like. 21 to two sessions and just drop it.
- 18:07Even if I felt like oh I could have done something different, I
- 18:10would still just drop it and just.
- 18:12Like why is that? Just put it.
- 18:13Out people were telling me just be consistent, just drop it out
- 18:15there. You know, I was learning from
- 18:17people like Russ or like whatever.
- 18:18And I'm not blaming Russ for why I did that, but right.
- 18:20I'm just saying like, you know, like I just felt like I just
- 18:23never really like took the time on a song.
- 18:25And not my fault was one of those songs.
- 18:27I was like, no, this is a good written song.
- 18:29Totally. I just not happy with the
- 18:30production where it's at. Yeah, let's let's move it.
- 18:33Let's let's get another, let's let's get another producer.
- 18:35Let's change the bass, like get a live bass.
- 18:37Let's do the. I just kept going, going, going
- 18:39until I got it to where it's at. Yeah.
- 18:40And I think it's a really strong song.
- 18:42It's one of my favorite songs. Absolutely.
- 18:44Putting the attention behind a song is like super important.
- 18:46Exactly. Yeah, so once I saw that and
- 18:48it's doing really well with barely any promo, honestly, like
- 18:51I put way more promo. It's so funny.
- 18:53The very first worst case scenario video that blew up was
- 18:55actually a backup idea because I was promoting Not my fault
- 18:58because Not my Fault just came out.
- 19:00The worst case scenario came out the October before and I was
- 19:02like, all right, we're going to do this like crazy video idea
- 19:04for not my fault. Like 3 of me are going to be
- 19:07playing Django with each other. And you know what?
- 19:09Just in case this video doesn't work, let's shoot one of where I
- 19:11drop by scream. And then that's the one that
- 19:14like blew up. And I was like, OK, let's keep
- 19:15doing worse. Honestly, it's so out of our
- 19:18hands. You.
- 19:19Never know. You never know.
- 19:21Like then you rolled the punches and then you started like
- 19:23working on that. One.
- 19:23Yeah. If someone said that was going
- 19:25to be my biggest song, I would not have believed them.
- 19:27It was crazy. There's definitely other songs
- 19:28that I would have thought would have been bigger.
- 19:30Yeah. But I mean, it makes sense in
- 19:31hindsight. So it's like all I could do is
- 19:32like, analyze why, why, why that happened.
- 19:35Yeah. As a math brain, I'm like, OK,
- 19:37what are the variables? What are the things that are a?
- 19:38100% you're going to want to replicate that success.
- 19:40Exactly. Yeah, so.
- 19:41That's how I am see with my videos and like we have
- 19:43everything I do. I'm like, OK, that did well,
- 19:45let's do it again. Yeah, exactly.
- 19:46More yeah. So I'm like, I'm always
- 19:48analyzing why did this work? Why did this go successful?
- 19:52You know, and I feel like I've already had that background in
- 19:54that space from the like just doing tik toks for a while.
- 19:57Totally and then and even in comedies, like I understand,
- 20:00like most videos on the for you page, if I see it, I know
- 20:02exactly why it went viral. So I.
- 20:04Like you can pick it apart, I can take.
- 20:05It apart and deconstruct it, yeah, so.
- 20:07Yeah, as a comic creator, I feel like I analyzed things so
- 20:09deeply, like This is why this did well and this what we could
- 20:11do and apply it to exactly what I want to do or what I'm looking
- 20:14for here. Yeah.
- 20:15So it's just a matter of like trying to do that with the song
- 20:18as well. Like why does the song do OK?
- 20:19It's a breakup song, sad song. Oh, the song in itself is a
- 20:22hook, You know, saying worst case scenario is a hook in
- 20:25itself. Like now you want to hear what's
- 20:27the rest, you know? And if I say it three times
- 20:29back, that is back. I have to listen because I'm
- 20:32curious. What is the worst case scenario?
- 20:33And then people wonder like what's the best case scenario?
- 20:36Exactly, exactly. You got to give the people.
- 20:38I just wrote a best case scenario.
- 20:40Best case, give the people what they want.
- 20:41I got to give people what they've been asking for two
- 20:43years. I was like, I can't make it
- 20:44corny. I think that's why I just like
- 20:46never did it because I was like, oh, it's going to be corny.
- 20:48But I found a way to like make best case scenario like.
- 20:51Not corny with the same producer from worst case scenario.
- 20:53So slush puppy to worst case scenario Gasti slush puppy,
- 20:57who's also on the Lulu. Love that episode.
- 20:59Please watch. He actually told me when he was
- 21:01here. I was like, Oh, J OS coming in
- 21:03and then he was like, I did his biggest song, worst case
- 21:06scenario, and I just did a song. For him that's case scenario.
- 21:08So funny. I don't know how much he told of
- 21:11the story, but slush puppy we literally for the first time we
- 21:14met we we had four hours and the third rider was like late too.
- 21:17He was like Uber got stuck in trafficker.
- 21:19Oh shit. And it's actually crazy.
- 21:21I was going to edit a video showing this, but I have the
- 21:24original voice note. Oh my God, when?
- 21:26We wrote the song. I would love to hear that.
- 21:28It is actually insane how quick we wrote this song because like
- 21:31we were just like, I was like, yeah, I just want like this type
- 21:33of vibe, yadda, yadda, yadda. Totally.
- 21:35And then like, yeah, I just like June 7th.
- 21:40There it is, June 7th, and he just started some guitar stuff
- 21:43and like usually like if I hear chords I like or whatever, I can
- 21:45start throwing melodies totally. And like throughout the day,
- 21:48throughout the years, I've always like if I come up with an
- 21:50idea, just like whilst talking, conversating, we say a word that
- 21:52triggers me. I'm like, oh, let me write that
- 21:53on my list. Yeah, I think like that day or
- 21:55the day before, I wrote down worst case scenario just as an
- 21:57idea. Yeah, so you.
- 21:58Pull it up. He starts playing the guitar.
- 22:00I see the thing. It's like the you'll see it's.
- 22:03So this is the full voice memo of when we wrote.
- 22:06Worst Case Scenario, trying to find the chords you know.
- 22:20That's so cool. So you can kind of hear them
- 22:27figuring it out, right? Yeah, you're like starting.
- 22:29There it is and I instantly say I fuck with
- 22:43that instantly. And you hear me watch first
- 23:06melody I throw. I like, I don't even want to
- 23:24pause just to see how quick you can.
- 23:25And he was like, bet yeah, that's so
- 23:43that was we wrote, that was literally 2 minutes, 2 minutes.
- 23:47That's crazy. And that's literally the song.
- 23:48Yeah, that's literally the song. It doesn't even deviate.
- 23:50Yeah. So we literally wrote the
- 23:51chorus. By the time the third rider came
- 23:53in, we were already on the first verse.
- 23:54And then he helped out. He he was killing it all.
- 23:57That's awesome process behind like songs being made.
- 24:00Yeah, yeah, no, I wanted to literally do a video on that.
- 24:02I guess I'll just clip this podcast but but I found this
- 24:07randomly. I was just like, Oh my God.
- 24:09Wait, that's the original audio? What the hell things are?
- 24:10Sharing that. But then the crazy part is he
- 24:12disappeared off the face of the earth for two years after that.
- 24:15I literally was trying to do multiple sessions.
- 24:17I was like, yo, such let's like do a follow up session because
- 24:19like, we never even like the original.
- 24:22Yeah, it's like demo vocals, right?
- 24:24Oh. Shit like the audio you hear is
- 24:26that same day. One session, we had one session,
- 24:284 hours, and like I wanted to go back and do other vocals and
- 24:31stuff, but then like he was a schedule busy and I was like all
- 24:34right, shoot, we'll just drop the song.
- 24:35Shut the hell up. He was like, yeah, it sounds
- 24:37fine. He sent me a mix.
- 24:38It literally sounded the same as the demo.
- 24:39I was like cool, whatever, mix 1.
- 24:42And then I was like all right, let's just upload it.
- 24:44And then it sends like, you know, I think the very first
- 24:47post I posted when it came out already had the song triggered
- 24:50at like 3K plays a day. And then it like simmered down
- 24:53to like 1K play a day. And then when I posted that
- 24:55second video in May with the ice cream dropping, it jumped up to
- 24:5810K plays. How crazy is this?
- 25:00Like the song and all that shit, like, And I was like, what the.
- 25:02So yeah, it was going crazy. I'm hitting him up like yo,
- 25:05let's stop in the never and I finally get him while I'm doing
- 25:09this album mode. I'm like, look, slush, like
- 25:12we're sitting. I was like, I was like, Loki,
- 25:14I'm about to have to kidnap this kid.
- 25:16You. Have to like Moss him in a pot
- 25:17or something, yeah. I was like, we're going to make
- 25:19best case scenario and I need you for it because you did a
- 25:23worst case scenario and it just worked out timing wise.
- 25:27You know, I actually, like, put him in a knapsack and, like,
- 25:29yeah. Yeah, sometimes that's what you
- 25:31got, new producers. Like, no, but I, I, yeah, you
- 25:34just happen to be in LA at certain weekend.
- 25:36We scheduled a date and I, yeah, we just wrote best case
- 25:39scenario, little last last song we wrote for the album.
- 25:42Yeah, two weeks ago before this. So yeah.
- 25:44And now the albums done. Yeah, now the albums done, we're
- 25:46just mastering some of the tracks.
- 25:48Most of them are mixed. And yeah, finishing up some
- 25:51paperwork and ready to deliver. We're ready to hear.
- 25:54It well, you played it for me right before this and it's so
- 25:57fucking good. I want to talk about the album.
- 25:59So antidepressants, yes and ruined My life was the first
- 26:03single for the album yes. And you just put it out.
- 26:05Well, you had the other. Songs yeah, yeah, honestly, I
- 26:08didn't expect Small Fish, Big Pond to be on the album and then
- 26:10like when I put it together I was like oh, this kind of fits
- 26:12so I just threw that in there but it's.
- 26:13Such an optimist song, optimistic song.
- 26:16Like honestly, like genuinely makes so much.
- 26:18Sense yeah, so that's going to be the closer of the album and I
- 26:20put Ruined My Life as the opener of the album.
- 26:22It was originally going to be just a single.
- 26:24It was actually supposed to come out in November because we were
- 26:26working on that Ashley so funny when my song U-turn we we kind
- 26:30of like when we were making U-turn with Olivia Lenny Ian, my
- 26:34producer showed me the instrumental, the rough
- 26:38instrumental for ruin my life and like a rough concept be out
- 26:41on it. It was actually like way slower,
- 26:42different drums all this stuff. So I was like, I was like, save
- 26:45that for later, we'll do that. And then we wrote.
- 26:47And then like the next week we wrote Ruin My Life.
- 26:49We like change the tempo, all this stuff, all that.
- 26:51And then like, I was ready to release it.
- 26:53But then that's when we started realizing that some of these
- 26:55tracks that we were holding really sound good together.
- 26:58So once we started putting it into a project, it was like, OK,
- 27:02now I can specifically write like, what parts of the story is
- 27:04missing, you know? And that's what I wrote.
- 27:06Songs like words that aren't mine In December I wrote after
- 27:09the honeymoon because I was like OK, I need a song that goes from
- 27:11like this happy relationship into worst case scenario, what
- 27:14does this look like? And I wrote after the honeymoon
- 27:16which. You bring it back to next to the
- 27:18optimism. Exactly.
- 27:19And then I was like smart, let's put best case scenario after it.
- 27:21Really does follow a narrative. Yeah, exactly.
- 27:23So yeah, that's so good. Yeah.
- 27:25So Ruined my life. Was like the catalyst for
- 27:27creating the album. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 27:28And it just, Ian's a great producer.
- 27:30He just is really good at like movie soundtracks too.
- 27:32So the song just sounds like an intro and an opener to.
- 27:36Oh yeah, I like how it began and like it rises.
- 27:38Yeah, I think that's the perfect album.
- 27:39Yeah, honestly. Thank you.
- 27:41Thank you. Yeah.
- 27:41So I love the song. It sounds great.
- 27:44I'm excited to perform it. I performed it once at a Berry
- 27:46College for a college show but excited to do it on.
- 27:49You're going to be performing it a lot more soon this.
- 27:51Year, hopefully. Hopefully, yeah.
- 27:52So I'm trying to plan a tour for May so I'll I'll start.
- 27:57Where should where should Jo go? Yeah, I mean, I need to let me
- 28:00know. I'm going to.
- 28:01I'm going to drop a. Definitely LA.
- 28:03Yeah, of course. LA born and raised over here.
- 28:05So it's The One Show that I know I can at least get a guest list
- 28:08of 2 to 300. Yeah.
- 28:10Yeah. But I'll be there.
- 28:12That's the thing. Everybody in LA wants to go to
- 28:14the show for free. I'm like, how many of my friends
- 28:15want to buy a ticket? Let's see.
- 28:17I'm like. So opposite, I'm very, very good
- 28:19about like don't guest list me. I'm going to buy a ticket, I'm
- 28:21going to show up. I'm like, I just feel like.
- 28:23It's actually the artist like. I always want to buy the merge.
- 28:25Like, I think it's so important to show like, you care, you know
- 28:28what I mean? But I know, I mean, it depends
- 28:30on the artist. Like I'm like some artists, I'm
- 28:32like, OK, I'm I'm gonna be on guest list.
- 28:35I'm like, like if you need that. Like I was definitely like
- 28:37Bryce. Like I'm like, put me on the
- 28:39guest list. I mean, I would hope so.
- 28:41I would hope so. I would hope so.
- 28:42Bryce. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 28:43But but like, yeah, it's just, it just depends.
- 28:46It's it's all love, so. You're planning a tour then?
- 28:48Yeah, I'm planning a tour right now.
- 28:50First time planning a headline tour.
- 28:51I just came out three opening tours last year.
- 28:54That's awesome. And yeah, I want to prove to
- 28:56people I can sell tickets, and I think that will lead to me
- 28:58getting more opening tours for like, some of my dream artists
- 29:02like. It's like a dream venue in LA.
- 29:04You want to perform at Dream? Venue.
- 29:05Ooh, Staples Center. I mean, that's just like.
- 29:07Yeah, they just calling me Staples Center, but yeah.
- 29:10I'm born and raised here, so you know, just Kobe is one of my
- 29:13biggest influences and. Right, you want your album to be
- 29:17exactly 24. Minutes.
- 29:18I was, yeah, right now 20. 3 1/2 minutes.
- 29:22Yeah, yeah. And it was like, so it depended
- 29:24on what songs and what versions I have on the album, but it was
- 29:27really close to being exactly 24.
- 29:29I might not get that, so we'll see.
- 29:30Yeah, that's a crazy time without.
- 29:32I was just like, oh, it's so close to being 20.
- 29:34Four. Why 24?
- 29:35He's like Kobe, Yeah. Yeah, I was like, if it's close
- 29:38enough, I'll just add some extra Dead Space on the end of some
- 29:40songs and make it 24 exactly. But that's so funny.
- 29:43But yeah, it's a quick album, so so you know, you guys have time
- 29:46to listen. Well, I want to talk about like
- 29:47the album itself. So like a lot of the songs are
- 29:49kind of short. I know like the longest ones are
- 29:51like about 3 minutes. Yeah.
- 29:53So like, is that intentional? You want them to be short songs.
- 29:56I think just me having a short attention span.
- 29:58I just know how to attract people with short attention
- 30:01spans. That's so crazy.
- 30:03Like I just, I mean, I'd rather people loop a song than play it
- 30:06once. So Oh my God, I'm.
- 30:07Opposite. I feel like my songs are kind of
- 30:09really long. I love a bridge.
- 30:11If you got a lot to say. I have a lot to say.
- 30:16I love AI, love a bridge if it makes sense.
- 30:18I would never want to Force One. Me personally, I mean respect I
- 30:21feel like. When I was listening to the
- 30:23album I was trying to find a bridge and I feel like maybe did
- 30:26After the Honeymoon have a bridge.
- 30:27No, I had an instrumental. Oh it.
- 30:29Had a look an instrumental. Bridge.
- 30:30Kind of like an instrumental bridge.
- 30:31Totally, totally. And I started where's our mind?
- 30:35Thank you. Yeah, where's our mind?
- 30:36Has one we almost added. So I originally Stardust we'll
- 30:40see what version comes out, but I won't even mention who's on
- 30:43it. But there's we have a great
- 30:45there's a solo version and then a feature on it.
- 30:47And then so we thought about moving my old verse 2 into the
- 30:51bridge and we had that version printed, but we were just like
- 30:55it kind of felt better shorter. So we just like cut the whole
- 30:58verse 2 that I had. It's a quick album and kept yeah
- 31:00and kept the feature on there. But we'll see.
- 31:03It might be just a solo version out if we depending on how we
- 31:06figure it out, but of. Course, of course, of course.
- 31:09I mean hopefully really like you can put out all the versions.
- 31:12Yes, hopefully, yeah, that's that's the goal, so.
- 31:14I think my favorite on the album based on the first listening was
- 31:17at Hello. At hello love it yeah, I was
- 31:19with super good producer a OK he he does a lot of stuff with like
- 31:22Quinn 92 Chelsea Cutler their manager set that up Sammy
- 31:27sievers shout out to Sammy. It's actually funny because that
- 31:31song we made like we made it right one worst case scenario
- 31:34blowing up in 2024. Oh shit, and Sammy tells me all
- 31:38the time and and a okay, both their wives like love that song
- 31:43like that. We had version 1 and they were
- 31:45just like and they listened to a lot of music, mind you, like
- 31:47this is producers and music managers.
- 31:49They're like, my wife ran into the room and was like, what the
- 31:53heck? I would have been, who the heck
- 31:55is this? Yeah, who the heck is this?
- 31:56Yeah. So I mean, I love that song,
- 31:57too. And I think that's when, like,
- 31:59when I had ruined my life and hello, it was kind of like, OK,
- 32:02yeah, this is a body of work that I can make.
- 32:04OK. So yeah, and then we literally
- 32:07got like Stardust, like same time Corey Corey already had
- 32:10that song. Actually, it was a originally a
- 32:12Thai Verdus bitch, funny enough like a tie and a couple other
- 32:16people got hurt it and but yeah, it just it landed with me.
- 32:22I. Was going to say songs like Find
- 32:23their Home and then. Usually and we, we changed the
- 32:26song originally was like a breakup song.
- 32:28And I was like, oh, what if we make it like, because I like
- 32:32some of the words like it's like what, what, what is it?
- 32:35How do I keep lying to myself? And I was like, what do we make
- 32:37it just about like instead of why do I keep lying to myself
- 32:39that I'm I miss my ex, Why don't we make it?
- 32:42Why do I keep lying to myself that I'm nonchalantly in love
- 32:45with you when I really do love you?
- 32:47Yeah, so that's what we like. Change the song to it has a
- 32:49better feel. And yeah, just.
- 32:51I mean, the album starts pretty like it's going from this
- 32:53journey of like optimism and then like, you know, the sad and
- 32:55it goes right back to that high. Note.
- 32:57Yeah, exactly. Yeah, yeah.
- 32:58So that's the arc that I wanted to build in in this movie in
- 33:01world. I love that.
- 33:03So yeah. Wait how long did this album
- 33:04take? Like start to finish would.
- 33:06You say from when I knew that I was going to be an album or just
- 33:09one like, well. Because like you did ruin my
- 33:10life, you said in you wanted to put it out in November last
- 33:13year. You had as we.
- 33:14Wrote it in July. You wrote that one in July, then
- 33:17you were like, OK, maybe we'll make like a project around this.
- 33:19But you had hello like years prior.
- 33:21I had at hello probably the year prior, yeah, the July before, so
- 33:28July 2024 and. That was just like at the time.
- 33:31It's like standalone. Probably the oldest.
- 33:33I'm trying to think what's the oldest song on the album.
- 33:35I mean outside of Small Fish Big Pond which already is out
- 33:38because that song was made in October 2023.
- 33:42I would say the oldest song that is unreleased is at is Stay Up
- 33:48and I made that literally the day or the week after I shot the
- 33:51music video for it's case scenario.
- 33:53So like that was December 2023. And then and then some of the
- 33:57other songs just came about like and I was like OK, all these
- 34:00kind of coord together. Yeah, actually Stay Up wasn't
- 34:03even fully produced. It was just a loop.
- 34:05It was like we had the vocal on like a guitar loop.
- 34:09I kept sending it to different producers and then I started
- 34:12working more with Ian because like before working with like
- 34:15Ian Ian, the first song we did was Damage Ian Everson and then
- 34:20and after that the second song we did was U-turn.
- 34:25But before working with Ian, I really worked to like every
- 34:29producer like a lot like I, I have like 40 songs out and no
- 34:33producer had more than two songs.
- 34:34So I was constantly just like, Oh yeah, really.
- 34:37And the reason why it sounds cohesive is because I'm always
- 34:39Co creative producing as well. Like I, I definitely like am in
- 34:42very involved in production. I I actually have only written
- 34:45to two pre made beats, so most of my songs are made with the B
- 34:49and my my the writing at the same time.
- 34:51And like I play piano guitar. I understand theory.
- 34:53So like we'll get in there and I'll make sure like I'm.
- 34:56You're like originating a lot of it too.
- 34:58Yeah, exactly. So so yeah, it's it's it's it's
- 35:02very much like I, I love to be involved in the production of
- 35:05the whole song top to bottom. So before working with Ian, I
- 35:07was all over the place and then I was like, yo, you want to try
- 35:11out this this song too? That sends him the loop.
- 35:13And he produced that version a year.
- 35:15And it was honestly like the one that I was like, oh, this feels
- 35:17the most me. Yeah, totally.
- 35:19You know, because there's I have an EDM version, I have other
- 35:21stuff and maybe I'll drop those versions later.
- 35:22But I have so many different versions of that song because it
- 35:25was just a loop that I had for like, you can do a version of
- 35:28that one too. Yeah, exactly.
- 35:29Honestly, like shoot, we'll do a deluxe album because I feel.
- 35:31Like this one. Like it felt like very R&B
- 35:34leaning to me too. Yeah, and actually, like one of
- 35:38my favorite references, Jon Bellion, who left to open for
- 35:41one day. Putting it out there, John.
- 35:45He's a, he's a, he's a viewer of Delulu.
- 35:47Is he? Yeah, of course.
- 35:48Oh yeah, we love it. Yeah, him and Harry Styles
- 35:51together. Huge influence on my music for
- 35:54sure. Actually, John Bellion's the
- 35:56reason I even started writing music.
- 35:58Really honest. Yeah, 2016, my friend put me on
- 36:02to his music was 201516, but he put me on, I think it was 16
- 36:05because that's when the human condition came out.
- 36:07Oh yeah. But it wasn't even that.
- 36:09It was the song Woke the Fuck up.
- 36:11That was the first song that he showed me of Jon Bellion.
- 36:14And I was just so like drawn in to like how he can go to just so
- 36:18many different like areas and music.
- 36:22Like it just starts, it builds. It's like this big drop.
- 36:24And then he went to the piano. I was like, what is this?
- 36:27This is song? And I like, I never written a
- 36:29song before that. So I started writing like right
- 36:31after that. Like so Jon Bellion is literally
- 36:33like one of my biggest influence.
- 36:34Wait, that's like, genuinely an incredible story.
- 36:35Yeah, like you literally just clocks.
- 36:37Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's crazy.
- 36:39I would love to open for Jon Bellion.
- 36:40He's an influence. I've had a lot of friends that
- 36:42worked with him. But yeah, I just, I, yeah, huge
- 36:46influence. And then I listen to a lot of Ed
- 36:48Sheeran. It's time.
- 36:49And then like, I was always listening to Bieber.
- 36:52You mentioned in the studio we were just in when you played the
- 36:54album that Bruno was a Bruno is also an.
- 36:57Influence where I love Bruno, I love I mean I grew up on
- 37:00Michaels and I love like, you know, people that emulate the
- 37:03greats One of my favorite artists right now, Dominic Fyke
- 37:07Somber is great, Olivia Dean's great.
- 37:10I feel like there's tiny bits of everybody that I listen to in
- 37:13me, but at the end of the day it's it's really me totally so.
- 37:18But I love giving credit where credit's due.
- 37:20So there's a lot of. I love hearing where like
- 37:22people's inspirations and references aren't.
- 37:24Too. Yeah, it's all of the place.
- 37:25I definitely have R&B references as well.
- 37:27Like I listen to a lot of like Usher growing up and yeah,
- 37:31giving. I listen to a lot of Leon Thomas
- 37:32right now. Actually.
- 37:33This is Leon Thomas I like talk to on Spotify all the time,
- 37:37right behind like Dominic Fike and Omar Apollo and me and right
- 37:42listening to Malcolm Todd a lot. Would love to work with them
- 37:44too. Love to work with anybody that I
- 37:45just mentioned. Honestly, all those are great
- 37:47people. We're manifesting that.
- 37:48Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know what I feel like after
- 37:52the honeymoon is like super R&B tinged.
- 37:54Yeah, that ones coming out next. Yeah, I I wanted to like kind of
- 37:58show people that have that side because first time singing as
- 38:01you heard earlier was like gospel choir.
- 38:02So like I, I have an R&B voice ish.
- 38:06At least I can keep up with it, but like you.
- 38:09Played an R&B song for me like after the album I was like I
- 38:12think this is better. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 38:14So like I, I was just like, let me just like kind of like curve
- 38:17people there. It's funny because like when I
- 38:19first got into the industry and writing, like I, I was writing
- 38:22pop, but like I also wanted to make R&B and it just so happened
- 38:24that the first producers I was working with were just pop
- 38:26producers, but I just kind of like got stuck there.
- 38:29But it was cool like I like. Pops like feel like you're like
- 38:33oh, I should guide this to be in R&B direction, maybe I.
- 38:35Should go run producers. There's actually like 4 songs
- 38:37that I deleted from a catalog that I tried, but like, yeah,
- 38:41they're just like they're. Just wasn't landing.
- 38:42It wasn't landing and like it just it's just a matter of like
- 38:45which producers you're working with.
- 38:47I think also can influence that, but also if I took time to learn
- 38:50how to produce ideas in my head I probably would get that more
- 38:54off. But I got better at that like
- 38:55later. And I mean it takes time.
- 38:57Genuinely like developing your sound and also understanding
- 38:59your own Sonic identity. Yeah, yeah.
- 39:00So I mean, After the honeymoon was definitely like R&B ish.
- 39:03It's so popish. But like, yeah, I think I just
- 39:05also just write really catchy melodies.
- 39:07Yeah, totally. I.
- 39:08Think you have like a very distinct lane in pop music.
- 39:10I think it's very airy. I think it's very bright, you
- 39:12know? Thank you.
- 39:13Yeah, Yeah. I mean, I I love just a lot of
- 39:17catchy people and I just like making ear worms that like I
- 39:20want people to think of a word and it makes you think of my
- 39:22song. So.
- 39:23So whatever concept that is, whether it's guacamole or like,
- 39:26you know, there it is a worst case scenario.
- 39:28I love that one. Yeah.
- 39:30You know, just if you say a word, I want you to think of my
- 39:32song over every other song because it's just a sticky.
- 39:34Yeah, that's good, Good branding too.
- 39:37Thank you. So when you go in to make music,
- 39:39like do you think about it? Like do you just make the song
- 39:41first or do you think about like how you're going to like make
- 39:43videos about it? Like, do you think about how you
- 39:45can? Market it now definitely like
- 39:48it's kind of the same time like sometimes it's like the concept
- 39:50entirely first. I haven't done that in a while.
- 39:53I did that with like a couple of more songs, which I could go
- 39:56back to doing that. But now it's more so like I love
- 40:00coming up with a good concept. And I like thinking while I'm
- 40:02writing, like, OK, is this going to work in content?
- 40:05You know, and sometimes I'll change like a whole verse, like,
- 40:09you know, like to be honest, like Stardust, for instance, we
- 40:11wrote like multiple different verses for that song and.
- 40:15Right now it it's unreleased song, but like the start the
- 40:18song start like 4 stop, like boom boom boom, boom.
- 40:22How'd I end up here? Didn't mean to fall.
- 40:24And that's like we almost did a different one, But that's so you
- 40:28already it's a trend. It's like instantly A trend.
- 40:31I can put up fail, fail, fail, fail.
- 40:33How did I end up here? Like I think in that way, like
- 40:36I'm always thinking like what works on content but also makes
- 40:38sense with the song. So it's like I could have gone
- 40:40a. Different.
- 40:40You're trying to be in the middle for that exactly.
- 40:42OK. Interesting.
- 40:43I try to mean in the middle because I still care about the
- 40:45song. I'm always serving the song when
- 40:47I'm writing. And I tell people that all the
- 40:49time, like, like serve the song. Like like even if it means like
- 40:52I finish the song and this is not a marketable song.
- 40:54And maybe it doesn't come out or maybe it does.
- 40:55Like there's some songs I dropped and I served the song.
- 40:58I just had no content ideas for it.
- 41:01It's just like, I mean, people hear it eventually, you know,
- 41:05like if I really love it, I'll put it on the set list for the
- 41:08show. But yeah, it's like sometimes
- 41:10like it's, that's just what it is.
- 41:12Interesting. Yeah, but now I, I really try to
- 41:14meet in the middle. Like it's like okay, I serve the
- 41:16song, but I also like try to think as best like how can I
- 41:19promote this while I'm making it?
- 41:20Yeah, absolutely. Because marketing is like so
- 41:22important when it comes to music too.
- 41:23Like, you can make the Best Song in the world, you can make the
- 41:25best projects in the world, but if people don't hear it, then
- 41:27it's like, then what? Yeah, you know, exactly.
- 41:30That's such a challenge too. Yeah, I mean, even Frank Ocean
- 41:34talks about it. I can't believe I didn't mention
- 41:35him as a huge influence, but definitely was.
- 41:39I used to only listen to Frank for like a whole year.
- 41:42But. But yeah, he even mentions like,
- 41:45you know, thinking about you is the reason we have nights.
- 41:47Like, you know, like he has his poppy songs that love to have an
- 41:51audience to where you can do whatever you want.
- 41:52And I have songs that I'm already like going more into
- 41:56that OK story mode and more in depth and like I could be more
- 42:00of an artist, but like, I'm still in the.
- 42:01You can get both. Yeah, you could definitely do
- 42:04both. And I think that's what I kind
- 42:05of. It's a world that you build.
- 42:06Exactly, and that's why this is the first time I'm building a
- 42:08world with an album. And I'm excited for album 1, but
- 42:11as well excited for album 2. You're.
- 42:12Already thinking about it, yeah. What's your favorite Frank Ocean
- 42:15album? Oof, oof oof, I don't think.
- 42:22He has a lot. No, I know.
- 42:23But I'm like, they're so close to me.
- 42:25Oh my gosh, favorite. It's so hard to be like
- 42:28favorite, you hear me? When I'm like, oh, these are my
- 42:30top artists. I list like 5 you gave so.
- 42:32Many more than five. I was kind of.
- 42:34You're like 8. Yeah, I don't even know.
- 42:36Oh my gosh. Because I'm like, oh, if I name
- 42:38like Blonde, I'm like, oh, but I like like five of these songs on
- 42:41Orange. Then I'm like damn it's so hard
- 42:45because my favorite overall song, if I was going to say from
- 42:48Frank, is lost. OK.
- 42:49And so it's like, do I gravitate towards orange more?
- 42:53I feel like, yeah, I dumped you. I don't know.
- 43:01It's like the first time you're speechless.
- 43:02On the show, yeah. I don't know.
- 43:03I was like, I don't know which one's my favorite.
- 43:05That's favorite, too. But I do know that that's my
- 43:08favorite song. And honestly, it was Georgia
- 43:09Smith's cover of it that made me really love it more.
- 43:11I heard more of the lyrics, and then I went back and I could
- 43:13hear the lyrics. I just wasn't really listening.
- 43:15And I was like, wow, this is fire.
- 43:17Yeah. Totally.
- 43:19Yeah, you know you lost, right? Lost in the heat of it all.
- 43:25Miami. He was singing Yukon.
- 43:28Oh yeah, Yukon was just listening to his live
- 43:31performance of it. Oh, we got the Grammys.
- 43:33In the city, when we used to drive a Yukon, I pick up
- 43:38whenever you call in the pocket lighting to sign like are you
- 43:43with me? He I think.
- 43:46That was better than Justin. No, no, no, no.
- 43:49Justin's a go. Justin's a go.
- 43:50Right, right, Right. From you, but no.
- 43:55OK, that's awesome. Anything after the honeymoon?
- 43:57It's such a sad one too. It's like very much in the worst
- 43:59case scenario, like lyrically, it's sad.
- 44:01Yeah, lyrically it's exactly the same thought process as worst
- 44:05case. Cuz when we were writing worst
- 44:08case scenario I literally said I don't want it to be like I like.
- 44:13I try not to solve the problem in the song like I just want to
- 44:16talk about the problem. Interesting.
- 44:18And like, I don't want to be like preachy or like, you know,
- 44:20like, oh, hey, I'm about to break up, so I decided to leave
- 44:23you or whatever. Like I'm not.
- 44:25I just wanted to raise the question.
- 44:27So I'm actually worst case scenario, if you listen to the
- 44:28lyrics, it's really just the question.
- 44:30Yeah. Like what's going to happen
- 44:32after, like, where we're at? Like it's not technically the
- 44:35breakup, but it's the feeling of before we break up.
- 44:38Like, yeah, worst case scenario we end up falling apart and I'll
- 44:41be pouring my heart up on the stereo.
- 44:43It's like it's talking about like, what would happen.
- 44:45So I kind of did the same thing after the honeymoon.
- 44:47I was like what? What is the?
- 44:48What is the question before we even get here?
- 44:50Got it. And it was like, oh, after the
- 44:53honeymoon phase. Like what comes next?
- 44:54What comes next? Like do I still love you after
- 44:57the honeymoon phase? Are we still sticky?
- 44:58Are we still like, you know, So that's what that's what that is
- 45:02about. I just wanted to write the
- 45:03question. And I did the same thing with
- 45:04the best case scenario too. I just wanted to write like a
- 45:08song that honestly, I was like best case scenario, I wanted to
- 45:10make a song that felt like the breakup and a funeral at the
- 45:14same time. Oh, what?
- 45:16Yeah, I, I, it's a good concept. Yeah.
- 45:19I was like, because we could have gotten like, very detailed
- 45:21in the chorus. I know that such an idea.
- 45:23I was like, Oh yeah, we could talk about like, you know, her
- 45:25new man did this and that. And I was like, no, I wanted to,
- 45:27like, work because, like, the chorus is best case scenario.
- 45:32I only cry a tear no matter where I go.
- 45:35I'll see you everywhere. I wish you the best I do.
- 45:40But I know I'll be missing you so best case scenario I'll only
- 45:46cry a tear and I I wanted that to feel sad and like.
- 45:51Yeah, feel like. Sad, but also like anybody can
- 45:54feel like relate to it. Yeah, because yeah, we've we've
- 45:58all experienced loss and whether it's a loss of relationship or a
- 46:02loss of a loved one, I think like the chorus resonates there.
- 46:04The verse is you could tell the story.
- 46:05You could be like, you know, this is a relationship,
- 46:08whatever, but I just wanted the chorus to feel like, OK, this
- 46:11resonates with people that experience the feeling of being
- 46:15of loss. I'm like, can I tell you so like
- 46:17you have such a unique approach to songwriting.
- 46:19Like I have so many artists that come on the show.
- 46:21I'm a songwriter myself and I know so many artists.
- 46:23And I feel like the way you talk about describe is like all novel
- 46:26to me. Like how you write a song is
- 46:28very novel to me. Like I, I don't know, I'm like
- 46:31absorbing all of. It right now, I mean, I love to
- 46:33like, I love to be personal, but at the same time, instead of
- 46:36being like too specific and and there's so many different ways
- 46:40to write a song. Like I definitely want to get
- 46:41more specific, but I like to like be I like to really write
- 46:46about the emotion because I think that's like in back, like,
- 46:49you know, back in like analyzing the song of the work, like worst
- 46:52case scenario is very emotional. Totally.
- 46:54And I think like it was one of my more emotional songs.
- 46:56I think that connected and I think people connect to the
- 46:58emotion of the videos. Dropping ice cream is sad,
- 47:01dropping pizza is sad. And like like there was a lot of
- 47:04sadder videos that have better conversions and like I know some
- 47:07people that get views on songs doing similar stuff to me, but
- 47:10like their song isn't sad or stroking, striking an emotion
- 47:13totes so they they're not seeing the same conversion.
- 47:16It's not resonating. It's not resonating. 100%.
- 47:18I'm like, let me write about the it's.
- 47:20About connection. Genuinely.
- 47:21Exactly. Yeah, and that's the best way.
- 47:23See, you were like mastering it. Yeah, yeah, I'm still mastering
- 47:26it and there's so much. No, you're so good.
- 47:27I'm curious how you're going to like, do it for an album roll
- 47:30out now instead of singles. Yeah, yeah, it's going to be
- 47:33fun. That's what she was like.
- 47:35Imagine me with the budget. I know we keep talking.
- 47:38About that, yeah, yeah. We're getting that budget.
- 47:40Yeah, I mean, we're, we're talking to some people.
- 47:42You guys, we're gonna have to buy tickets for the tour.
- 47:44We're gonna see him in LA. Exactly.
- 47:46Please, please, please. Yeah, definitely.
- 47:48I yeah, I'm planning a a tour, but I'm as well planning a, a
- 47:51pre LA show and and hopefully March.
- 47:53We're thinking so we we should all go.
- 47:55This is a 2 day old concept, so we don't have exact dates and
- 47:58details yet. It's happening, but we're gonna
- 48:00perform that and we'll get it. Yeah.
- 48:01Oh, not the full album. I don't want to leave it all the
- 48:04way, but I will be performing a. Lot when's the album coming out
- 48:06I'm. Planning for April.
- 48:08April. Yeah, so I'm planning a single
- 48:09month until then. And it's done.
- 48:12Mostly, Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 48:13The songs are all decided and it's just being mastered.
- 48:16Like some songs are being mastered still and.
- 48:19So a single month until the album drops.
- 48:21Yeah, so. It's going to be we drop ruined
- 48:23my life in January after the honeymoons coming after
- 48:26Valentine's Day, right? And then what we got best case
- 48:30scenario, because everybody's been asking me for like 2-3
- 48:32years and then 8. People what they want.
- 48:34We'll drop the rest and just keep promoting.
- 48:36Love the year, but yeah, that's awesome.
- 48:38Yeah. Thank you.
- 48:39Yeah. We're so excited for that.
- 48:40Thank you. So then how strong are Bryce?
- 48:42You open for him? Yeah, and you guys are super
- 48:44close. Yeah, we met Bryce Vine 2021.
- 48:48And that's a funny story because the other part, I met Dominic
- 48:53Fact the same day. But that's a whole long story.
- 48:55Maybe I'll tell another, but that's my price.
- 48:58Yeah, price. Price is great.
- 49:01Yeah, we met. It's funny.
- 49:02I was listening to his music back when I was an Uber driver
- 49:06in like 201617. So you're Uber driving?
- 49:08Yeah, and I didn't realize who what his like his what he looked
- 49:12like. And so like when we met, we were
- 49:14just like talking da da da da da.
- 49:16And then like when he was dipping, he was like, yo grab my
- 49:18IG and I was like, cool. And he's like, it's Bryce mine.
- 49:20And I was like, did you Bryce, I think you were on my playlist.
- 49:25Like, yeah. And then like, like, it's like,
- 49:27I have no idea what you look like.
- 49:28So I heard his music and stuff and he saw my socials like, yo,
- 49:31you do social media like, oh, love help.
- 49:32And then we ended up building a great relationship where I.
- 49:35Helped. Wait, what the heck?
- 49:36He's so cool for that. Yeah, I would never do that.
- 49:40Yeah. And then yeah, I helped him with
- 49:43some campaigns. And then we just grew closer and
- 49:45closer. We start going out more and a
- 49:47lot of our friends got a lot of Musials already.
- 49:49And yeah, totally grew closer. And he let me actually open the
- 49:542022 for the first time. I opened four shows and just out
- 49:58of love because I was helping him with socials and stuff.
- 50:00And I was kind of like you, just out of love.
- 50:02Let me do that. And I think it was just a matter
- 50:04of like, you know, it made sense when worst case scenario started
- 50:08taking off. Like I was establishing myself
- 50:11more as a artist instead of being a social media creator.
- 50:13So his team thought it would make sense for me to open in
- 50:172025. So yeah, that's awesome.
- 50:20The first tour I got to open and then.
- 50:22Y'all are doing a lot together. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 50:24We did damage. So we did a lot of stuff.
- 50:27Great homie. And then after a nice hit me up
- 50:29and I was like, are you back in town?
- 50:30You can do, you could do my tour.
- 50:32And then I did a niece's tour and then I did half of the first
- 50:35half of that. And then I opened for Crash
- 50:37Adams right after. Damn.
- 50:38And now they're my room mates. Oh yeah, that's crazy.
- 50:41Yeah, yeah. Yeah, you mentioned that.
- 50:43Yeah, House of Youtubers who just like all, can bounce off
- 50:45each other and have ideas and. How is that like?
- 50:47Like, is it chaotic? Like it's fun?
- 50:51I mean, no, it's, it's fun. I think.
- 50:53I think it's all about like in general, I'm answering the
- 50:55question in general, living with like other creatives.
- 50:57I think it's all about the like which creatives you're living
- 51:00with. I think us, we are very high
- 51:02performers and them too, like actually, because before that I
- 51:06lived with like Johnny Valentine and like some other creators
- 51:09into like I can name creators. I've been living with creators
- 51:12since like 2020. So but I would say like I'm a
- 51:16high performer, but I feel like that they're like the highest
- 51:19performers I've ever seen. They work like a team, like
- 51:21crazy. Like they are, they're doing it.
- 51:24They're, they're doing the thing.
- 51:25They're like, they, their office.
- 51:27Yeah. It's like Wolf of Wall Street.
- 51:28It's just like a bunch of laptops and their computers
- 51:31monitors next to each other and they're running multiple
- 51:33accounts doing all this stuff. And like, it's, it's a whole
- 51:35thing. And that's motivating for me to
- 51:37see as well as like with the ideas I have.
- 51:38So we just share back and forth and like I'm already seeing like
- 51:42it impacts like my career and my impacts on them.
- 51:46So like it's, it's dope to see it's so.
- 51:48Cool to be like usually benefiting and.
- 51:49Yeah, exactly. So yeah, I think it's all about
- 51:51like witch creators, 'cause you know, like when you're around
- 51:53high performers, it makes you perform better, but if they're
- 51:55totally slack, there's slack, so.
- 51:57And there's Slack. Yeah, and also, like, are you
- 52:00around high performers that only care about themselves or are you
- 52:02around high performers that clock?
- 52:03Yeah, right. Like Vince from Cash Adams, his
- 52:06favorite song is After the Honeymoon.
- 52:07He's been playing it like crazy. It's not even out.
- 52:10I love when friends are supportive like.
- 52:11That Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, we're.
- 52:13Just talking about that with Entitled.
- 52:14Street. Yeah, you can.
- 52:15See who plays it. You can see who plays it.
- 52:17Yeah, yeah. All you people there were like,
- 52:19oh, I played your album and I'm like, you're.
- 52:22So full of shit. Literally like I can.
- 52:24See, like I can literally thank you Untitled.
- 52:26All my friends literally tell me all the time they're like, I, I
- 52:29see you playing my shit all the time.
- 52:30I'm like, yes, yeah, I listen. I.
- 52:32Love your shit. Yeah, exactly.
- 52:34No, I could see, like, the top people.
- 52:35I can even go down and be like, OK, this person listen, listen,
- 52:38listen to my album before it's even out.
- 52:40I'm like, cool. OK, so you know who a real 1 is.
- 52:42Yeah, I know who the real ones are.
- 52:43That's awesome. Yeah, Crash Adams just had two
- 52:46big videos with two Delulu alum Sophie Powers and Taylor Felt.
- 52:50Yeah, yeah. So yeah, that's awesome.
- 52:52Honestly, like I was the first one in their their series
- 52:56really. Well, OK, correction, I'm the
- 52:58first one to do give me a kiss, which was with a big song that
- 53:01blew up. But they had two freestyles that
- 53:03were real before, like or like every freestyles real, of
- 53:06course, but like they have two freestyles that were like more
- 53:10random is what I'm saying. Like freestyles that were like
- 53:14they were literally like in Santa Monica and just went up to
- 53:16like random people and like somebody came up and and like
- 53:19king vibe and like somebody else.
- 53:20And then I think one more person.
- 53:22But like, I was like, oh, like, let's do give me a kiss.
- 53:24And like, I remember Vince being like, no, it's not going to blow
- 53:27up. Like that song's too fast for
- 53:28people to freestyle. And I was like, hold my beer.
- 53:32Like let me hop on. Let me hop on this and it took
- 53:34off like 58 million views which was stuck at 7 K for years mind
- 53:39you like and it's crazy like God works in mysterious ways.
- 53:41I blew up on TikTok and I just repost my content on other
- 53:45platforms and I'll gain a following usually.
- 53:47I posted 900 videos on YouTube at this time.
- 53:49I just wasn't doing it. It was not going.
- 53:51And I'm talking like viral videos that I have like.
- 53:54With the viral YouTube Shorts. They just weren't going and it
- 53:57was just stuck at 7 K and I do the collab with them and my
- 54:00YouTube jumped up to 87 Ki got hit up by a bunch of labels and
- 54:03all this stuff like and then I finally had the momentum.
- 54:05Now my YouTube's like at 460 and it's still growing.
- 54:07But like I couldn't get out of like jail until I did that
- 54:10collab. And now it's like my music
- 54:12audience is YouTube, which is great because like all the other
- 54:15platforms, majority is came from comedy and I had to convince
- 54:18them now like YouTube blew up specifically for music.
- 54:21And I'm happy about that because like they expect music so which
- 54:24is cool. So but yeah, I, I, I was like
- 54:27the first to do give me a kiss. And then that series just kept
- 54:29going. And now they have so many songs
- 54:31they're doing well. But I, I met them back in like
- 54:332020. So like I've known them since
- 54:35they were smaller, the creators than me.
- 54:37And now they're kind of like the biggest creators in music that
- 54:40just. Are helping you guys are signed
- 54:41to the same management? Yeah, yeah.
- 54:43We, I, I, I refer them to Dylan. Wow.
- 54:46Social media. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 54:47That's awesome. So yeah, it's, it's been great
- 54:50and it's it's great to bounce off each other and just have a
- 54:52lot of good ideas. Yeah, that's super cool.
- 54:53I really like hearing that because I feel like they're in
- 54:55LA There could be like, really like, difficult people, bad
- 54:58people. Yeah, you know.
- 55:00Oh yeah, I know a lot. Oh yeah.
- 55:02For. Sure, name them right now.
- 55:05Yeah. Would you ever sign to a label?
- 55:08I don't think anymore I would. Ever you used to want to?
- 55:11I used to want, I mean, I used to think like, you know, and
- 55:13shout out Russ like I mentioned. I remember him mentioning like
- 55:16having 11 albums out and then doing a 5050 deal on one album
- 55:20and like getting that leverage and stuff.
- 55:22And I was like, OK, cool, 5050 deals.
- 55:24That's what you want, That's what you want.
- 55:26And I did a 5050 on worst case scenario.
- 55:28I'm just a math teacher and I think like labels are so used to
- 55:31finessing people and. Totes.
- 55:33I like it. Like I said, math major.
- 55:37I was a math teacher, not major. But anyway, like I just
- 55:39understand the numbers and I'm just like wow this is so
- 55:42ridiculous and I wish I understood it before but a 5050
- 55:44deal is not good, right? The only way I could ever even
- 55:47work with a label is if it's like 8020 artist favorite which
- 55:51is kind of a distro deal of anything.
- 55:53Yeah, I was like, I feel like that's.
- 55:54Impaled, yeah. And I mean, maybe Taylor's
- 55:55getting that, I don't know. Or like some huge acts are
- 55:58probably getting more major. Totally.
- 56:02What that what a 5050 means for people that don't know, it means
- 56:07let's say I give you 20 grand and it means that 50% of the
- 56:13song is going to be profit for the label and the other 50% is
- 56:17going to recoup on the 20 grand. In my case at what 15K advance?
- 56:24We had another five. We had 25 K marketing 46 grand
- 56:28owed owed. My song has I don't know how
- 56:31many streams 27,000,000 at this time.
- 56:33It's made damn near $100 million or 100K in in dollars.
- 56:38And I'm sure you see half of that is recouped and the other
- 56:41half is sort of recoupment. So I'm probably owed like one or
- 56:43two Ki haven't gotten it yet. But yeah, it's like I 27,000,000
- 56:47streams. Like kind of like.
- 56:49Yeah, I this song is making AKA month.
- 56:51I I, I would if I just cut that to myself because all the labels
- 56:54will do also because everybody's like, oh, it's just about with
- 56:57the right label. All they do is tell you to post
- 56:59more on TikTok totes. They run some ads but they tell
- 57:03you to do what you're doing. That's what I tell my talent.
- 57:05To do so, that's why I'm building a course.
- 57:06I'm going to teach you how to post on TikTok.
- 57:08But at the same time it's like. We're going to get that.
- 57:11Yeah, you don't hit that. Honestly, I was.
- 57:13Going to say you should like do more marketing.
- 57:14You're really good at it. Thank you.
- 57:16Especially for music, a lot of musicians struggle with
- 57:18marketing. With the budget, which we'll
- 57:22have soon, we'll have soon, but let's get that budget.
- 57:24But yeah, I, I, I just, I've been studying the game and I'm
- 57:27still always learning. Shout out Kobe for that because
- 57:29he's always like Kobe Bryant, the one of the greatest
- 57:31basketball players. Like I'm always a student in the
- 57:33game so I never feel like I know everything.
- 57:34I have a tattoo that says that. Yeah, love it, love it.
- 57:37Yeah, So I've always felt like I have Mamba mentality and same.
- 57:42Yeah. Even in a collaborative space
- 57:44like the arts, I just. I mean, yeah, it.
- 57:46Makes sense like a hard working mentality.
- 57:48That's awesome. Yeah.
- 57:50You're super positive. Thank you.
- 57:51Yeah. Like, genuinely thank you,
- 57:53brother. I feel like the entire time
- 57:54talking to you like from when you got to set, like you've been
- 57:56like, really, really like actually.
- 57:58Optimistic. I just, I just feel like God
- 58:00made me this way and I just like to share his light.
- 58:02And yeah, I just, yeah. OK JOI ask all my guests on the
- 58:06show yeah what their most do Lulu take is.
- 58:09Dang, you know I read that, Yeah.
- 58:12Did you figure it out? I was trying to.
- 58:13Figure it out. He texted me and he was like he
- 58:15does not know his dulu take. And then I like try to figure it
- 58:18out. And I came up with one.
- 58:20And then I completely forgot now that we're here.
- 58:21So oh, shit, just think of one. OK, I don't know.
- 58:24I like the Lulu take. I just feel like all my takes
- 58:26are reasonable. And that's what's hard to become
- 58:29a reasonable. And I'll take it's a reasonable
- 58:31take. What's a reasonable take?
- 58:33I don't even know. Give me an example of your Dulu
- 58:36take. Not a lot of Dulu.
- 58:37Take. Give me one.
- 58:38I'm, I think I'm going to be the biggest poster in the world.
- 58:42See, that's not the Lulu. That's pretty reasonable.
- 58:44See, that's what I'm saying. Like that's not like if I say
- 58:46that I'm going to be the I'm going to be independent artist
- 58:48selling out stadiums. I don't think that's the Lulu.
- 58:50I think not the Lulu. That's what I'm saying.
- 58:51That's why it's harder for me to come up with the Lulu stuff.
- 58:54I'm like, yeah, I was trying to think.
- 58:55I was like I maybe I'm just the Lulu so much that none of my
- 58:58think. The Lulu for it to happen.
- 58:59Or the Lulu. Yeah, but I'm going to sell out
- 59:02stadiums as an independent artist.
- 59:04I'm going to buy a. Ticket.
- 59:05You don't need a guest. List.
- 59:05Hey, thank you. Yeah, absolutely.
- 59:07Yeah, I'm going open for Ed Sheeran.
- 59:09I'm going to open for, I mean, we'll see if I can open for
- 59:12Justin Bieber too. I I feel like Ed Sheeran,
- 59:14there's alignment there. Like I just like I know like
- 59:16he's helped out so many cool like small artists and I know
- 59:18Justin has two and scissor and all these people that I want to
- 59:20open for, but also I just want to sell out the stadiums myself.
- 59:23Like I want to do it. You can headline.
- 59:25Yeah, exactly. I.
- 59:26Want to headline those stadiums as well?
- 59:27100% OK, maybe no Dululu take then, yeah.
- 59:31I mean, those are those. Are pretty reasonable.
- 59:32Those are reasonable. Yeah, that's what I'm.
- 59:34Saying I think you have to do Lulu, especially if you're going
- 59:36to be an artist. Like you have to have like this
- 59:38unwavering belief that you can do it.
- 59:40I yeah, there's no doubt in my mind.
- 59:42Yeah, absolutely. I mean, you're literally doing
- 59:44it. Right now, Yeah.
- 59:44I mean, I heard what Tyler, The Creator even say.
- 59:47Like it's just like he does not. Failure is not a thought that
- 59:50comes to his mind. Yeah, absolutely.
- 59:52Same Z, same ZI only do success and I don't even I can't even
- 59:55anticipate things not going well.
- 59:56It's either success or delayed success for me.
- 59:59Totally. I think that's my delulu take.
- 1:00:01Okay, not even. There's only success or delayed
- 1:00:04success, and there's no failure. OK, I love that.
- 1:00:07Yeah, OK. I'm right there with you on that
- 1:00:09one. OK, So going off of that, we
- 1:00:13close out every show by manifesting together.
- 1:00:14All right, let's manifest. So you're already talking about
- 1:00:16selling out stadiums. What else do you want to
- 1:00:18manifest? What do you want to speak into
- 1:00:19existence here in Dululu? Do you know what this is?
- 1:00:22Clock it. Oh T OK, I had to teach that to
- 1:00:26my producer. Though Oh no no no, we clock it.
- 1:00:28Yeah, he was like, I don't know what this little pinching thing
- 1:00:31is. Is it not clocking to you?
- 1:00:34Damn, you're a believer at the. Beach Oh yeah for sure you're
- 1:00:37police are a month younger than me.
- 1:00:38I grew up like in LA and like this is different stuff like.
- 1:00:42He went to 'cause he did the social.
- 1:00:43Media we had like mutuals and stuff he didn't like.
- 1:00:45That he wasn't like an influence on your album though, no.
- 1:00:47No, no, I've never met influence.
- 1:00:49Oh yeah, always. I think in general, just like
- 1:00:51his sound, I've I've always been like influenced by, but I grew
- 1:00:54up kind of like with a lot of mutuals.
- 1:00:56I just haven't met him myself. Right, right, right.
- 1:00:59We have a lot of mutuals that you actually, yeah that we both
- 1:01:03fuck with. So.
- 1:01:04OK, you'll manifest meeting him. We'll pass on this.
- 1:01:06Yeah, it'll be a great time. No rush.
- 1:01:08But I manifest. Meeting a lot of people that I
- 1:01:12love and adore but I manifest manifest 2 million monthly
- 1:01:16listeners minimum by the end of the year.
- 1:01:18I love that. That's so that's reasonable too.
- 1:01:20Yeah, that's a very reasonable one.
- 1:01:22Yeah, that was especially with this album.
- 1:01:23That was safe, huh? Was that safe?
- 1:01:25Yeah. Go back.
- 1:01:26Did I say? 5 million, say 101010 million.
- 1:01:2910 million monthly listeners. There you go.
- 1:01:30End of the year headline tour. Yeah, all of that.
- 1:01:32Yeah. OK.
- 1:01:33Yeah, I'm claiming from you. That's good.
- 1:01:36Let's do it. This was such a joy.
- 1:01:37Like, honestly, talking to you was so awesome.
- 1:01:39And like, hearing your album and getting to know, like, the
- 1:01:42process, Like, honestly, like the way you write songs.
- 1:01:44Like, I'm, I'm telling you, it's like super unique to what I know
- 1:01:47about how to write songs and like, what my friends tell me
- 1:01:49what other artists talk about on the show.
- 1:01:51Yeah. Thank.
- 1:01:52You it's a nice perspective. Thank you.
- 1:01:53Yeah, I'm still learning and I just want to keep making some.
- 1:01:57You're great. You.
- 1:01:57Gave really good feedback too. Thank you.
- 1:01:59Yeah. To just the music in general,
- 1:02:01like you're super talented. Thank you, brother.
- 1:02:03Oh, I want to talk a little bit about your next album that you
- 1:02:05started thinking about. Before we close the show.
- 1:02:09I do want to talk about this next album.
- 1:02:10You made me a song that you're like, this is the direction I
- 1:02:12want to go. And I was like this is better.
- 1:02:15You should do this. I'm only getting better.
- 1:02:17You are? Yeah, you.
- 1:02:19Already know you want a second album?
- 1:02:20You. Already know your second album,
- 1:02:21third album, all that stuff. Yeah, I'll just say the name of
- 1:02:24the second album will probably be self-titled.
- 1:02:26Just the Young Optimist. Oh my God that's sick.
- 1:02:30Yeah, self-titled. Yeah.
- 1:02:32So not jeofication. It's just just a young optimist.
- 1:02:35OK, yeah. Or even an optimist.
- 1:02:37We'll see. It might be just young optimist.
- 1:02:39OK, Yeah, I've always thought about making an album called
- 1:02:42Shower Thoughts. What this album is going to be
- 1:02:44more R&B leaning though it'll. Be it's I'm always a genre
- 1:02:48blender, right? So I don't think it'll ever be
- 1:02:50like one genre like you heard. There's a lot of range, but
- 1:02:53cohesiveness. But yeah, there'll be a lot more
- 1:02:55R&B and a lot more just different stuff in there and
- 1:02:57just like more experimental. OK, super.
- 1:02:59Exciting. That's next year.
- 1:03:00Yeah, Yeah. That's going to be next year.
- 1:03:02OK. Well, we'll focus on you.
- 1:03:03Might drop a single president for a year, but yeah, please.
- 1:03:06That song that you showed me, Yeah, you showed.
- 1:03:08I love that Loki. You should put it on this album.
- 1:03:10I Loki could have, but it's it's all good.
- 1:03:13I digress. We'll hear it at some point.
