- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the me Eater podcast coming at you shirtless, severely,
- 0:13Speaker 1: bug bitten, and in my case, underwear listening podcast. You

- 0:22Speaker 1: I'm hunting, I need gear that won't quit. First Light builds,
- 0:26Speaker 1: no compromise, gear that keeps me in the field longer,
- 0:30Speaker 1: no shortcuts, just gear that works. Check it out at
- 0:34Speaker 1: first light dot com. That's f I R S T
- 0:38Speaker 1: L I T E dot com. All right, everybody joined
- 0:44Speaker 1: today by someone that Krinn and I have been texting
- 0:47Speaker 1: back and forth about having on for it might be
- 0:50Speaker 1: six years crazy. Krinn was like five because they can't
- 0:55Speaker 1: do math.
- 0:56Speaker 2: I think it's six December nineteenth.
- 0:58Speaker 1: That article no, no, I meant I was making about
- 1:00Speaker 1: it's so long you?
- 1:02Speaker 3: Yes, yes, I was.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Since she was a little gal, a little girl. We've
- 1:05Speaker 1: been texting back and forth about having on. Rob sand
- 1:08Speaker 1: from Iowa and what what brought this up? People text
- 1:14Speaker 1: you articles all the time, and I didn't know that
- 1:16Speaker 1: many years ago we get an article years ago headline
- 1:21Speaker 1: New York Times article. Someone sends us this article headline
- 1:24Speaker 1: the bow hunting influencer of Iowa Democrats. Rob did not
- 1:29Speaker 1: write these heads you did not, he didn't write these articles.
- 1:34Speaker 1: A line from so then the I studied journalism a
- 1:37Speaker 1: little teeny bit. What do you call the the headline
- 1:41Speaker 1: and then head out the like lead, lead led right
- 1:46Speaker 1: the sub Then there's the nut graft there somewhere is it?
- 1:50Speaker 1: The lead? The lead? Rob sand figured out how to
- 1:54Speaker 1: win statewide office as a Democrat in Iowa, and now
- 1:58Speaker 1: the presidential contenders are seeking his counsel. Yeah. It goes
- 2:04Speaker 1: on mister sands fondness for hunting. See this is really
- 2:07Speaker 1: a story about hunting. Mister sands fondness for hunting, cultivated
- 2:11Speaker 1: during his childhood years in rural Iowa, but also conveniently
- 2:15Speaker 1: appealing to the state's more conservative constituents, helps explain why
- 2:20Speaker 1: he was the only non incumbent Democrat to win statewide
- 2:25Speaker 1: here in twenty eighteen, all thanks to hunting.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Uh.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Then the Telegraph, here's another headline, robbedn't right, He's gonna blush.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Uh Oh, the gun toting Christian who could help Democrats
- 2:38Speaker 1: win over Trump voters. Rising star party is spooking Republicans
- 2:42Speaker 1: and Ruby red state of Iowa. A sentence from that
- 2:44Speaker 1: article goes, Rob Sand, Oh, yeah, there's a gun toting
- 2:48Speaker 1: Christian from rural Iowa who goes deer hunting. Of all
- 2:52Speaker 1: things that I'm added, I'm editor, I'm adding that of
- 2:54Speaker 1: all things, who goes deer hunting, drives a white Ford
- 2:57Speaker 1: F one fifty pick up and open speeches by quoting
- 3:01Speaker 1: the Bible. Another article Wall Street Journal, Meet the Democrat
- 3:07Speaker 1: who Republicans fear in Red state America. Here's here's a
- 3:11Speaker 1: sentence from the article. Rob sand could almost pass for
- 3:15Speaker 1: a Republican. He frequently quotes the Bible, owns two sig
- 3:19Speaker 1: sour handguns, goes deer hunting each fall, and asks audiences
- 3:23Speaker 1: to sing a few verses of America the beautiful at
- 3:26Speaker 1: the start of each campaign event. So these articles they
- 3:31Speaker 1: build and build and build, and then we're like, maybe
- 3:33Speaker 1: don't have this guy in and talk to him. Uh,
- 3:35Speaker 1: but most were gonna talk about a big old Bucky killed. Yeah,
- 3:38Speaker 1: that'll be more fun. That's the main thing. My auditing head.
- 3:42Speaker 1: And all of these sentences are like, not quite true,
- 3:44Speaker 1: not quite true.
- 3:46Speaker 3: I now drive a Silver f one fifty.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Oh some little minor differences. Yeah, the white one hit
- 3:51Speaker 1: like one seventy, and the camfazers were going out and
- 3:54Speaker 1: with all the body damage that was on it, it
- 3:56Speaker 1: made more sense to buy a new one. Got it.
- 3:58Speaker 1: But there's a quote the only thing worse than being
- 4:01Speaker 1: written about it's not being written about. You could switch
- 4:06Speaker 1: my in my business. That's probably true. Yeah, you could
- 4:08Speaker 1: switch it. You know you can switch it. Oh. Also,
- 4:12Speaker 1: I forgot to mention he's he's running for governor. There's
- 4:16Speaker 1: that he's running for governor and I iowas we're gonna
- 4:19Speaker 1: talk about that, but first we have to have our
- 4:21Speaker 1: entrepreneur spotlight. Back to Brooklyn Stevens. Right, Brooklyn Stevens, this
- 4:28Speaker 1: is your third time you've been on the show, believe
- 4:30Speaker 1: so okay, because she's trying to build her business it
- 4:33Speaker 1: FOURAL six Bone Works, so we have around on and
- 4:36Speaker 1: to check in with her. Harvest was down in Montana
- 4:39Speaker 1: this year because it was an exceptionally warm fall. It
- 4:42Speaker 1: was not much snow, hot, very hot, and she saw
- 4:48Speaker 1: it reflected in how many schools came into four L
- 4:50Speaker 1: six Bone Works. Yep, that's her leading theory. Tell us
- 4:53Speaker 1: about that.
- 4:55Speaker 2: I yeah, I mean I last year, I probably did
- 5:00Speaker 2: close to two hundred and fifty schools from January to
- 5:04Speaker 2: end of December, and that was not counting that it
- 5:10Speaker 2: would have been this January, like the the trickle in
- 5:15Speaker 2: of that season schools, which was probably another twenty or
- 5:19Speaker 2: so got it this year. I don't even know if
- 5:22Speaker 2: I'll get close to two hundred.
- 5:26Speaker 1: This cannot stand. Yep. And last I need to flood you.
- 5:29Speaker 1: They need to flood four or six bone works with skulls. Yeah,
- 5:33Speaker 1: I don't care if you've got to ship it from
- 5:35Speaker 1: another country yep.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Yeah, we bought specifically four to hold all of my heads.
- 5:41Speaker 2: A shipping container, so you didically.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Yeah, you own your own shipping container now.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like it's like a smaller one, but it's
- 5:50Speaker 2: still shipping.
- 5:51Speaker 1: So you've got capital expenditures into your business.
- 5:54Speaker 3: Yeah, that's deductible, definitely.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Uh. And you're thinking about so traditionally the school You've
- 6:01Speaker 1: done a bunch of schools for me, now you must
- 6:02Speaker 1: probably done a half dozen or more. Yeah. Yeah, all
- 6:06Speaker 1: turned out beautifully, zero complaints, Thank you, beautiful work. But
- 6:11Speaker 1: you're branching into your brand. You're going to branch into
- 6:14Speaker 1: the beetles stuff and some other hide hide stuff. So
- 6:18Speaker 1: tell tell folks about what your tell folks about your
- 6:21Speaker 1: sort of I don't know what you call it business
- 6:23Speaker 1: lingo your verticals? No, you know, I'm getting that.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Yeah, So the Beatles I got specifically for like the
- 6:34Speaker 2: smaller schools because it's it's hard to like boil them.
- 6:38Speaker 2: I would just put them in a crockpot and slow
- 6:40Speaker 2: cook them. But oh I just was not a fan,
- 6:43Speaker 2: and so I just got the Beatles. And then the
- 6:46Speaker 2: way I whiten things now, I can still decreases at
- 6:51Speaker 2: the same time, so I can still do it with
- 6:53Speaker 2: the smaller schools and it just makes it easier. Okay that,
- 6:56Speaker 2: and I'll sell the smaller schools too, like if I
- 6:59Speaker 2: can it. My buddies are big trappers, and so if
- 7:02Speaker 2: they don't want their skulls, like, they'll just give them
- 7:04Speaker 2: to me to feed them, and I'll just sell them
- 7:07Speaker 2: and I'll pay them for the school or whatever they want.
- 7:12Speaker 2: And then yeah, I did just get in to tanning.
- 7:17Speaker 2: I was dabbling in it before, but I just opened
- 7:20Speaker 2: for public, so I can't do really anything.
- 7:24Speaker 1: So someone got say, let's say someone was out and
- 7:26Speaker 1: they got a coyoke and they wanted to have it
- 7:28Speaker 1: done as a hanging decoration or they wanted to save
- 7:33Speaker 1: it up to get something made out of it they
- 7:35Speaker 1: could bring you. You would skin it, flash it, stretch it,
- 7:39Speaker 1: get it to the tannery, all that kind of stuff,
- 7:42Speaker 1: and return to them a finished product. Excellent. Excellent.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Yeah, and then I just now starting to get into
- 7:49Speaker 2: shoulder mounts. I did my first one last last summer.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Still a lot of things I need to work on,
- 7:55Speaker 2: but it turned out great for Oh I did. Yeah,
- 7:58Speaker 2: I think so, and I got a lots of good
- 8:00Speaker 2: feedback on it.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Oh, well, next time you come in, you should bring
- 8:02Speaker 1: in a shoulder mount. That's pretty exciting. So you're you're
- 8:05Speaker 1: on the path. Like John Hayes, better watch out.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I've talked to him quite a bit, and he's.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Better watch that. He's gonna start having to steer you wrong.
- 8:14Speaker 1: He's gonna start giving you. Hayes is gonna start giving
- 8:16Speaker 1: you bad advice. Yeah, yeah, he's gonna he sees you
- 8:19Speaker 1: coming in the rear view mirror and he's gonna start
- 8:21Speaker 1: giving you bad advice.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Right, yep.
- 8:24Speaker 1: He might not even be around anymore. I spoke to
- 8:26Speaker 1: him this morning. He was driving thirty miles an hour. Oh,
- 8:30Speaker 1: he was driving thirty miles an hour in a white
- 8:32Speaker 1: out behind a truck. We talked about what I would
- 8:36Speaker 1: say if he doesn't make it. I was gonna say
- 8:39Speaker 1: it with John. It was all about the animals, That's
- 8:41Speaker 1: all I was gonna say at is moral service. Now
- 8:43Speaker 1: it's gonna be like, you know, the dead ones.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Yeah, he's all about sounds fair.
- 8:48Speaker 3: You should remember that the pupil should never outshine the master.
- 8:51Speaker 3: That's what they say. He'll stay happy as long as
- 8:54Speaker 3: you keep telling him, I'm learning so much from.
- 8:56Speaker 1: You, that's yeah. Do that. If he tells you a
- 9:00Speaker 1: hot tip, don't be.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Like yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, don't tell don't tell him.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Oh I already knew that. Anything he says, oh, thank you.
- 9:09Speaker 1: The pupils should never outshine the mask, or if you're
- 9:11Speaker 1: a terrible bullshitter, just at least interesting, you know, keep
- 9:16Speaker 1: it in mind. Yeah, never call him and give him
- 9:19Speaker 1: a tip, because then, you know what I'm saying, Then
- 9:22Speaker 1: he might sayabotage, you know what I mean, because he's
- 9:25Speaker 1: he's got to watch out. Sure, he's the old guard.
- 9:27Speaker 1: You're the new.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Guard, right yep?
- 9:31Speaker 1: All right, Well, so tell people how to get ahold
- 9:34Speaker 1: of you. The bringing in the skulls.
- 9:36Speaker 2: I have a flyer at the Meter Flagship store downtown Bozeman.
- 9:41Speaker 2: My phone number information is all on that or my
- 9:44Speaker 2: Instagram is just four O six dop bone works. Message
- 9:47Speaker 2: me on there, my Gmail is on there, or if
- 9:51Speaker 2: you have my number, you know, it's just shoot me,
- 9:53Speaker 2: text whatever. That's the best way. I don't look at
- 9:58Speaker 2: my email very much, but you can get me.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Get a hold of me. If someone was down on
- 10:01Speaker 1: main Street, because because you work at the you don't
- 10:03Speaker 1: work at the media to store on main Street. Yep,
- 10:06Speaker 1: someone could just drop one off there. Huh is that
- 10:08Speaker 1: not legal?
- 10:09Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 10:09Speaker 2: I have a with Alec.
- 10:11Speaker 1: He knows what he knows. What's up? Okay, now tell
- 10:15Speaker 1: me the honest answer, like it doesn't it's not. The
- 10:16Speaker 1: honest answer isn't going to bother me. This is the
- 10:18Speaker 1: last question. Would you rather be home cleaning skulls or
- 10:22Speaker 1: rather be working at the store. Just tell me this
- 10:24Speaker 1: flat out honest answer.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Be home clean and clean skulls.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Yep. Okay, you're you're you're inspired, you're inspired. It's awesome.
- 10:31Speaker 1: All right, Well, good luck, thank you. Four h six
- 10:34Speaker 1: bone Works. Give the phone number.
- 10:37Speaker 2: It's gonna be four oh six four four eight four eight.
- 10:42Speaker 1: I got a second question or the second last question?
- 10:46Speaker 1: Do you prefer people to bring you skulls that are
- 10:48Speaker 1: rotten and full of maggots or fresh and frozen. Neither,
- 10:54Speaker 1: Oh really tell us, okay? And with this and with this,
- 10:58Speaker 1: the perfect customer brings the skull and what form.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Killed it that morning? It off that night, not skinned?
- 11:08Speaker 2: Just leave it to me, not skinned. I don't it's
- 11:13Speaker 2: something about the skin, I think, sucking in all that moisture,
- 11:16Speaker 2: and so I think if you just leave it on
- 11:19Speaker 2: there and then I can do it. I'll get it
- 11:21Speaker 2: done either the same day or the day after. And
- 11:25Speaker 2: I don't know what it is, but it's just like
- 11:27Speaker 2: the freshness. It really does make skulls come out wider
- 11:31Speaker 2: and not realistic.
- 11:32Speaker 1: So if they're not doing you a favor when they
- 11:34Speaker 1: skin it, I mean.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Sort of, I'm gonna now I charge to skin them.
- 11:39Speaker 2: But that's why that's what I really like to just that.
- 11:43Speaker 3: But she's also inviting her customers to do less work.
- 11:47Speaker 3: Just bring it to me, I'll do it. That's smart businesss.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Fooral six bone works. Get the phone number again.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Four six four o four eight four.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Eight Okay, Brooklyn, which one you like the most? Your
- 12:01Speaker 1: I know? On your contact it says brook but I
- 12:04Speaker 1: know he has Brooklyn. Am I doing? Am I wrong
- 12:06Speaker 1: when I say Brooklyn?
- 12:07Speaker 3: No?
- 12:07Speaker 2: It doesn't matter.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Okay, So you can pick customers, pick brook they can
- 12:11Speaker 1: pick Brooklyn. Steven's firl six bone works. Done a bunch
- 12:15Speaker 1: of work for everybody around here. You're doing Spencer's biggest
- 12:18Speaker 1: buck he ever got. Yep. Nice.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Wow, he's probably the biggest buck I've yarrowed so far.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Really, he's a picky man too. If he's happy, you'll
- 12:30Speaker 1: know you did a good job.
- 12:31Speaker 2: He's fussy, Yeah, little guy.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Fussy, little fellow. Likes everything kind of how he likes it.
- 12:40Speaker 1: They've been in his house. Likes everything he likes if
- 12:44Speaker 1: you if you move something, he knows he likes it,
- 12:48Speaker 1: just how he likes.
- 12:49Speaker 3: It's hard to live that way.
- 12:53Speaker 1: All right, you can take off, go clean some skulls. Yep,
- 12:56Speaker 1: thanks dude, appreciate it. Come by, Thank you God.
- 13:00Speaker 2: I already broke those rules.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Which ones skin skin didn't let it rot.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Still still in a box in the garage.
- 13:08Speaker 1: She skin didn't let it rot.
- 13:09Speaker 3: I also like to call me anything, you know. It's like,
- 13:11Speaker 3: you can call me anything. Just call me for your
- 13:13Speaker 3: text or means.
- 13:14Speaker 1: That's a good. Yeah, it's the only rule. Okay, Rob
- 13:17Speaker 1: sam Man, Let's let's start a little bit. Let's start
- 13:21Speaker 1: a little bit about we'll get it. I want to
- 13:23Speaker 1: talk about the buck. I want to talk about what
- 13:26Speaker 1: exact you do for a living, what you're fixing to
- 13:28Speaker 1: do for a living. You met, but let's let's start out. Uh,
- 13:33Speaker 1: let's start out back home and when you were a
- 13:34Speaker 1: wee lad. So one of one of the articles I
- 13:38Speaker 1: read about you made a lot gave a lot of
- 13:39Speaker 1: ink to the fact that you were, that you worked
- 13:42Speaker 1: in the poultry. I did it as a chicken catcher.
- 13:46Speaker 3: I did well technically capons capon catcher, so castrated chickens.
- 13:51Speaker 3: This is in northeast Ayle. I grew up in Tacora,
- 13:54Speaker 3: and so there's a factory on the east east side
- 13:59Speaker 3: of town, east out of town that we actually toured
- 14:02Speaker 3: when I was in third grade.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Okay, so you get to us how you got a
- 14:05Speaker 1: foot in the door.
- 14:06Speaker 3: That's exactly right. They were like, you look dirty. I remember,
- 14:09Speaker 3: I remember the little old ladies splashing some of the
- 14:12Speaker 3: giblet water on us as we were walking past. So
- 14:14Speaker 3: that was very that was thrilling. Definitely made me think
- 14:17Speaker 3: I have a career ahead of me and capons, but
- 14:21Speaker 3: I'm fourtunate.
- 14:22Speaker 1: I'm not like I if that was a trivia question,
- 14:26Speaker 1: I don't know that I would have gotten it right.
- 14:28Speaker 3: What a capon is?
- 14:28Speaker 1: Yeah? Usual? But but but how is the consumers not
- 14:32Speaker 1: buying a capon? This is this is a production term.
- 14:35Speaker 3: I can't tell you if they're marketed honestly as capons
- 14:38Speaker 3: are not. My job was walk into the barn, pick
- 14:41Speaker 3: up the capons, hand him to the guy on the truck,
- 14:44Speaker 3: and that was That was the end. And I was fourteen,
- 14:46Speaker 3: so I was paying attention to Yeah, five bucks an
- 14:49Speaker 3: hour cash. I don't know if I should say that. No,
- 14:53Speaker 3: they'll come for you. It was five bucks an hour cash.
- 14:57Speaker 3: It was good money and you could do it when
- 14:58Speaker 3: you were fourteen. And uh yeah, just huge barns. So
- 15:03Speaker 3: they pull these huge trucks in turn off the lights.
- 15:08Speaker 3: Like I said, capons are castrated meal chickens, so they're fattier,
- 15:12Speaker 3: bigger than usual, and you're just walking around. You grab
- 15:16Speaker 3: them by the legs, both legs. Both is great because
- 15:20Speaker 3: if you can get both, then they can't scratch, you.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Can't spurry or bite you exactly exactly.
- 15:26Speaker 3: No matter what, their last line of defense is always
- 15:28Speaker 3: to piss and shit all over you. Got it, So
- 15:30Speaker 3: that's going to happen, got it. That's what Fiel does,
- 15:33Speaker 3: is that right, grab them. If you grab him by
- 15:35Speaker 3: the ankles.
- 15:37Speaker 1: It's the only line of defense. So we uh, you know,
- 15:41Speaker 1: you grab grab the ankles. Hopefully you get both, pick
- 15:44Speaker 1: up another one. You know, maybe you get strong enough
- 15:46Speaker 1: six months later that you can do three at a time,
- 15:48Speaker 1: or try to get four if your techniques improving. Give
- 15:51Speaker 1: them to the guy on the truck and you do
- 15:53Speaker 1: that until all the trucks are full. So is this
- 15:55Speaker 1: one of those young kid jobs that a lot of
- 15:58Speaker 1: young kids come in and a lot of them leave
- 16:00Speaker 1: on day one?
- 16:00Speaker 2: Oh?
- 16:00Speaker 1: That was like like throwing hay bales. Tends to be
- 16:03Speaker 1: actually funny that you mentioned that. My buddy Andy Rasmussen,
- 16:07Speaker 1: one of my best friends. Uh, he came once, did
- 16:10Speaker 1: not go back to collect his pay. Then he's a
- 16:15Speaker 1: hard and he's a hard working dude.
- 16:17Speaker 3: He's uh, but this is just this was not his
- 16:20Speaker 3: not his bag.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Where I grew up, there's two jobs any kid could
- 16:24Speaker 1: get in. Every kid guy. Yeah, yeah, and it was
- 16:26Speaker 1: any kid could walk in and start peeling logs. Yep,
- 16:30Speaker 1: for log home. We don't have that. We don't have
- 16:32Speaker 1: that in Iowa. Thirty five cents of foot. I don't
- 16:34Speaker 1: know what it is. Not back the thirty five cents foot.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Any kid could walk in and he'd be like, have
- 16:38Speaker 1: at it to you? Peeling bark peeling bark off, you know,
- 16:40Speaker 1: like a nice log home has that hand peeled? Look? Yeah,
- 16:44Speaker 1: anybody could come in. There's no there was just the
- 16:46Speaker 1: application period. There's no there was no interview.
- 16:50Speaker 3: Are you swinging a hatchet?
- 16:51Speaker 1: No, it's a draw knife, okay, And it was just
- 16:55Speaker 1: simply sure, go ahead, yeah, ready you go. And most
- 17:00Speaker 1: people peeled a couple of feet of the log and left. Yeah,
- 17:03Speaker 1: there you go, There you go. And the other one
- 17:05Speaker 1: was working at the greenhouse filling flats.
- 17:09Speaker 3: With dirt that would probably be a little bit soil.
- 17:13Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, But it was like anybody could get it,
- 17:15Speaker 1: but not everybody wanted it.
- 17:17Speaker 3: Detasseling corn was the other one for Iowa. That's in
- 17:20Speaker 3: that too. Was your family agriculture. No, you could see
- 17:23Speaker 3: corn and cows out my bedroom window. But my dad
- 17:25Speaker 3: likes to say he was a farmer for six months
- 17:27Speaker 3: and then when he was six months old, they moved
- 17:28Speaker 3: off the farm.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Got it. So, yeah, so you didn't you were you
- 17:32Speaker 1: were egg egg adjacent, but not any family.
- 17:35Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right. Well, and everything if you're in small
- 17:37Speaker 3: town Iowa, you know kind of everything's egg adjacent to
- 17:40Speaker 3: a certain degree. So no, but yeah, first job was
- 17:42Speaker 3: catching chickens. Moved on from there to McDonald's for a
- 17:46Speaker 3: couple of years, and then the curve ball would be
- 17:49Speaker 3: I think my next job after that was working for
- 17:50Speaker 3: a local internet service provider, strangely enough, got it.
- 17:53Speaker 1: Yeah, so you went to law school in Iowa.
- 17:56Speaker 3: Went to law school at Iowa, and then went to
- 17:59Speaker 3: the Attorney General's US. After that seven years as the
- 18:01Speaker 3: chief public coruption prosecutor in Iowa.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Oh so that was gonna ask, Okay, so that's how
- 18:06Speaker 1: you became aware of that there's all this.
- 18:08Speaker 3: There is a state auditor. Yes, that's there's that.
- 18:11Speaker 1: There's stuff to do in the governments, right, got it? Yeah?
- 18:15Speaker 1: So what was that work? Now?
- 18:16Speaker 3: So I prosecuted most of the public corruption in Iowa
- 18:22Speaker 3: in that timeframe. So, like many states, we had a
- 18:24Speaker 3: film office tax credit of filmmaking tax credit. Uh, like
- 18:29Speaker 3: some other states, we screwed it up, and there was
- 18:31Speaker 3: a lot of frauds. So I prosecuted those cases. Also
- 18:34Speaker 3: uncovered the largest lottery rigging scheme in American history. That's
- 18:37Speaker 3: a crazy story. Actually, Oh that's a good one to
- 18:39Speaker 3: talk about.
- 18:39Speaker 1: Big version of that.
- 18:40Speaker 3: It was a great one to talk about here. There
- 18:42Speaker 3: were big Foot hunters involved. Yes, yes, so.
- 18:46Speaker 1: You the fact that you think that excites me, I'm
- 18:53Speaker 1: excited by it. I'm like.
- 18:57Speaker 3: Anti Bigfoot, all right. I mean I'm not anti his
- 19:00Speaker 3: existence or anti looking for him.
- 19:02Speaker 1: We've had lookers on we had a look around. Well, no,
- 19:06Speaker 1: she wasn't. She covered the lookers, yes, oh, okay, covered
- 19:11Speaker 1: she was a reporter.
- 19:12Speaker 3: She covered the lookers, all right, and.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Then she kind of was a little bit she didn't
- 19:16Speaker 1: want to condemn them. Yeah, because that's her sources there there. There,
- 19:21Speaker 1: They're they're people searching for truth in the world. You know,
- 19:24Speaker 1: that would been the kind of thing she would have said
- 19:27Speaker 1: on Yeah.
- 19:27Speaker 3: I'm not here to judge him. I'm just here to
- 19:29Speaker 3: tell you some of these jackpots were claimed. The guy
- 19:34Speaker 3: who was at the mastermind of it, it was his
- 19:37Speaker 3: job to write the computer program, was going to pick
- 19:40Speaker 3: winning numbers. He put a little bit extra in there.
- 19:43Speaker 3: And so his brother, who was a Justice of peace
- 19:45Speaker 3: down in Texas.
- 19:46Speaker 1: His brother, he got it back way up.
- 19:48Speaker 3: Yeah, state lottery so interesting. He actually worked for the
- 19:52Speaker 3: Multi State Lottery Association. So they ran the show for
- 19:57Speaker 3: different games across thirty eight different states. It's and Canadian provinces.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Got and this is not the kid where the ball
- 20:03Speaker 1: blows up. And though it is not okay, it's a
- 20:05Speaker 1: computer generator winner.
- 20:07Speaker 3: It's funny because they moved into the computer generated systems
- 20:10Speaker 3: after the triple six fix in Pennsylvania.
- 20:12Speaker 1: Not familiar. Uh, The triple six fix was a rigged
- 20:16Speaker 1: lottery jackpot with the balls right, but they injected die
- 20:20Speaker 1: into the sixes and so the sixes dropped down, which
- 20:23Speaker 1: technically speakings this is one of those weird things about
- 20:27Speaker 1: the ping pong ball. Ye yes, yes, yes, And this
- 20:30Speaker 1: is one of those weird things. Technically speaking, it's the
- 20:33Speaker 1: triple squix. Yeah, we should have a whole different podcasts
- 20:36Speaker 1: about this. They may have done. That's what I was
- 20:40Speaker 1: going to say, Like, you want to talk to you.
- 20:42Speaker 1: We got blood trails, but financial crime. If you involved
- 20:45Speaker 1: with the big Foot, that's your angle. The Bigfoot hunters right.
- 20:47Speaker 3: The triple six fits triple six fix in Pennsylvania.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Who okay, I don't want to spend too much time
- 20:53Speaker 1: on the triple six. Sure okay, sure, okay, So go on. Well,
- 20:56Speaker 1: so somebody who.
- 20:59Speaker 3: Forgot what human was was like, oh, if we do
- 21:01Speaker 3: this with computers, then no one will ever rig it.
- 21:03Speaker 3: And of course then Eddie Tipton came along, who's the
- 21:06Speaker 3: mastermind at the center of this one, and he rigged
- 21:08Speaker 3: a computer program so he would know he would be
- 21:12Speaker 3: able to rigged what was written. He wrote the program,
- 21:16Speaker 3: but then put a little extra in there. What so
- 21:18Speaker 3: that on one of three dates of the year, if
- 21:22Speaker 3: that date fell on a Wednesday or a Saturday, and
- 21:25Speaker 3: if the draw was happening after eight pm, rather than
- 21:28Speaker 3: going to the actual random number generator for the first seed,
- 21:34Speaker 3: it would go to a seven variable algorithm that he knew,
- 21:38Speaker 3: and so he could he could have people gone by
- 21:40Speaker 3: one hundred, two hundred, three hundred tickets and he would
- 21:42Speaker 3: know that he was hitting the jackpot in those three
- 21:44Speaker 3: hundred what yeah, yeah, yeah, crazy. And his brother is
- 21:48Speaker 3: a justice at the Peace down in Texas and a
- 21:50Speaker 3: big foot hunter, and so he tapped into his big
- 21:52Speaker 3: foot hunting network to help claim some of the tickets,
- 21:54Speaker 3: which I theorize.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Because he had like his associates. Yes, wow, and this
- 22:01Speaker 1: has got to be don't. Don't these folks have to
- 22:03Speaker 1: have a high degree of trusting each other. Yeah, because
- 22:06Speaker 1: you are looked at by the outside world as I'm sure.
- 22:09Speaker 3: You're laughed at.
- 22:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:11Speaker 3: Yeah, and so this you you you believe, I believe,
- 22:15Speaker 3: we know.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Yeah, we deserve this money. That's right, that's right. And
- 22:19Speaker 1: so his brother, the people that were the names, did
- 22:23Speaker 1: they even know their names are being used?
- 22:26Speaker 3: You didn't, they did. So what it was was.
- 22:28Speaker 1: I don't because they're being told what number to play.
- 22:31Speaker 1: They're being they I don't know that they were being
- 22:34Speaker 1: told what number to play. But the brother of the
- 22:37Speaker 1: Mastermind would go to them and say, hey, I want
- 22:39Speaker 1: the lottery, but my wife and I are on the outs,
- 22:43Speaker 1: or you know, something about like I don't want my
- 22:45Speaker 1: wife to know I'm gambling, something like that. Will you
- 22:47Speaker 1: claim the ticket. I'll let you keep ten percent. Just
- 22:50Speaker 1: do all of it cash, understand today, not the annuity thing.
- 22:53Speaker 1: I'll give you ten percent if you go claim it.
- 22:56Speaker 1: And so they'd go claim it, and then ten years
- 22:59Speaker 1: went by, there was a sixteen million dollar jackpot in Iowa. Actually, folks,
- 23:04Speaker 1: if you want to, if you got an hour and
- 23:06Speaker 1: you want to watch a documentary lotto dooc dot com,
- 23:08Speaker 1: you can watch the whole story there. Or I wrote
- 23:10Speaker 1: a book about it. I am.
- 23:11Speaker 3: I didn't have anything to do with making it. I'd
- 23:12Speaker 3: prefer you by my book. Personally, it's the winning ticket,
- 23:17Speaker 3: but crazy story. So we got to interview you know,
- 23:22Speaker 3: this bigfoot hunter down in way East, Texas, down in
- 23:26Speaker 3: the Bayou's ironically last named Conn.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Some of this stuff you just can't make up.
- 23:34Speaker 3: Really, yeah, yeah, and all they were like, yeah, he's
- 23:39Speaker 3: my bigfoot hunting buddy. The brother who was kind of
- 23:42Speaker 3: at the thread that connected from the mastermind actually got
- 23:47Speaker 3: interviewed about the very first jackpot went out in Colorado
- 23:51Speaker 3: by an FBI agent while he's in the hospital with
- 23:55Speaker 3: two broken legs from falling out of a tree while
- 23:57Speaker 3: bigfoot hunting. Wow, yeah, these guys are indeed, they're in
- 24:01Speaker 3: deep crazy story.
- 24:03Speaker 1: Well did this go to a jury?
- 24:05Speaker 3: It did when we only had we only knew of
- 24:08Speaker 3: the one Iowa ticket. So interesting wrinkle here. You know
- 24:12Speaker 3: you got your right to speedy trial. Ladies and gentlemen,
- 24:15Speaker 3: if you've been charged with the crime, you got your
- 24:17Speaker 3: right to speedy trial. In Iowa, you can have a
- 24:19Speaker 3: ninety day speedy trial rule. Normally the federal rules is
- 24:22Speaker 3: a year, but you can demand it in ninety days.
- 24:26Speaker 3: And this was a case that had kind of been
- 24:27Speaker 3: around for a long time. It got handed to me.
- 24:29Speaker 3: We did a little we pushed a little bit on
- 24:32Speaker 3: the investigation, got some good stuff, and then suddenly realized
- 24:34Speaker 3: that we got to indict this guy once we found
- 24:37Speaker 3: him out. We released the video of him purchasing the
- 24:40Speaker 3: tickets and got some good tips actually from a guy
- 24:42Speaker 3: in Maine. But we uh, not a big foot hunter,
- 24:45Speaker 3: not a big foot hunter, no, but a guy that
- 24:47Speaker 3: knew the mastermind was like that, Saidie Tipton.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Huh.
- 24:50Speaker 3: So we had to indict him real quick. And then
- 24:52Speaker 3: he demanded speedy trial under the Iowa rule for ninety days.
- 24:55Speaker 3: So we had this sense at that point where like, Okay,
- 24:57Speaker 3: this guy works at the Multi Say Lottery Association. It's
- 25:00Speaker 3: his job to write the program that picks winning numbers,
- 25:03Speaker 3: and here we have him buying and ticket. This thing's
- 25:04Speaker 3: obviously rigged. We have no hard evidence, we don't have
- 25:08Speaker 3: the computer. Right, it's all circumstantial case. And so of
- 25:13Speaker 3: course we're thinking multi SA lottery associations running games in
- 25:16Speaker 3: thirty eight states and provinces. This can't be the only one.
- 25:20Speaker 3: But he demands speedy trial, and so we go to trial.
- 25:23Speaker 3: We have a jury trial, We pick the jury the
- 25:26Speaker 3: day we start evidence. CBS This Morning covers this trial
- 25:30Speaker 3: says they got some computer expert on this guy's got
- 25:33Speaker 3: a pretty the defendant, he's got a pretty powerful argument
- 25:36Speaker 3: for a reasonable doubt because they don't have that hard evidence.
- 25:39Speaker 3: We won anyway, and then we're waiting for sentencing. It's
- 25:46Speaker 3: like a six week wait. You do this, there's a
- 25:48Speaker 3: pre sentenced investigation, so the Department of Corrections can make
- 25:51Speaker 3: a recommendation to the judge. While we're waiting, I get
- 25:54Speaker 3: a phone call from Texas and I recognize the area
- 25:56Speaker 3: code is his area code? Just my phone rings in
- 25:59Speaker 3: my cubicle. Answer the phone, Hey us, this Rob saying, yeah,
- 26:03Speaker 3: do y'all know the Adie Tipton's.
- 26:05Speaker 1: Brother won the lottery?
- 26:08Speaker 3: No? Yeah, maybe about ten years ago out west somewhere,
- 26:11Speaker 3: maybe a Colorado. I did not know that, Thank you,
- 26:16Speaker 3: And so the investigation. Then now we've got the tip
- 26:20Speaker 3: that we kind of needed to go to other state
- 26:22Speaker 3: lotteries that we technically don't have any you know, we
- 26:25Speaker 3: can't tell them give me this. But now we've got
- 26:28Speaker 3: some information, we can really go to them and say
- 26:31Speaker 3: you probably need to give us this, and they've got
- 26:34Speaker 3: a reason to do it. So investigation went on from there.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Did another state win up n Avingham or did you
- 26:40Speaker 1: guys get the who gets to host him?
- 26:43Speaker 3: It was interesting he served his time in Iowa. We
- 26:46Speaker 3: had great cooperation and really important work from the Wisconsin
- 26:50Speaker 3: Attorney General's office, David Moss up there and Joeanne Joy
- 26:54Speaker 3: credit to them a prosecutor and an investigating agent. And
- 26:59Speaker 3: then out in Colorado, Rob I think his name was
- 27:02Speaker 3: Rob Shapiro at the AG's office there they agreed, they
- 27:06Speaker 3: decided to do a prosecution. They didn't have much role
- 27:09Speaker 3: in the investigation, but Joanne and David really helpful. So
- 27:12Speaker 3: this is probably we think this is probably the biggest
- 27:16Speaker 3: multi state plea agreement since the founding of federal law enforcement.
- 27:21Speaker 3: Because we couldn't get the fence to take the case.
- 27:23Speaker 1: Is he in the who'scow? Now?
- 27:25Speaker 3: Who they went?
- 27:25Speaker 1: Now? Is he in jail? Locked up?
- 27:27Speaker 3: No, and now he's out, he's sort of like four
- 27:29Speaker 3: and a half years.
- 27:29Speaker 1: That's it.
- 27:30Speaker 3: Yeah, in now he has to he's my understanding, has
- 27:37Speaker 3: still got his sentence hanging over his head in Wisconsin.
- 27:40Speaker 1: Got it. So if he doesn't make good on his restitution,
- 27:44Speaker 1: which he better start doing, I think they can haul
- 27:46Speaker 1: him in in Wisconsin and throw him back in. But
- 27:49Speaker 1: he's down in Texas and he's probably playing lottery. I mean,
- 27:52Speaker 1: they'll win the restitution money. He might know what numbers
- 27:56Speaker 1: to pick. I don't want I want to tell you
- 28:01Speaker 1: about something. I don't want this take up too much time.
- 28:02Speaker 1: But do you hear about these dudes in Texas that
- 28:05Speaker 1: just did that. They won the lottery, but they won
- 28:08Speaker 1: it far and square. They these mathematicians, they kind of
- 28:12Speaker 1: it's a global network.
- 28:14Speaker 3: Was this the serial number thing? Like they figured out
- 28:17Speaker 3: a clue in the serial number? No?
- 28:18Speaker 1: No, no, no, they it's a global network. Or these
- 28:22Speaker 1: mathematician guys, and they just watch sweep steaks, raffles, giveaways, lotteries.
- 28:29Speaker 1: They watch them for vulnerabilities. So interesting in Texas they
- 28:33Speaker 1: realize that you could, if you're a business, you can
- 28:38Speaker 1: get your own lottery machine for tickets. I did see this.
- 28:43Speaker 1: So they just rent offices all over to state. They
- 28:46Speaker 1: don't open any businesses because it's not part of the thing.
- 28:49Speaker 1: You just need an address. They rent offices over to state.
- 28:52Speaker 1: They get their own lotto machines. They wait till the
- 28:56Speaker 1: jackpot gets to a certain bit and where they know
- 29:00Speaker 1: their expected value hits the This is the time, friends, families,
- 29:05Speaker 1: they are like, they're banking on they have it have
- 29:08Speaker 1: to be that. They can't be a split jackpot. Yep.
- 29:10Speaker 1: If it's a split jackpot, they break, even if they're
- 29:13Speaker 1: the sole winner. They clear tens of millions of dollars. Yeah,
- 29:16Speaker 1: and so they would. They would wait till it hit
- 29:18Speaker 1: that amount. There's actually and then they got seventy two
- 29:20Speaker 1: hours or something like that.
- 29:21Speaker 3: There's another story that's similar out of Michigan. Matter of fact,
- 29:25Speaker 3: Jerry and Marge go large. Oh, Jerry and Marge. Jerry
- 29:30Speaker 3: was some Michigan guy who just had a real head
- 29:33Speaker 3: for numbers and he noticed some pattern and some game
- 29:36Speaker 3: in Michigan and basically did the same thing.
- 29:39Speaker 1: There's there was.
- 29:40Speaker 3: It started with a newspaper or sorry, a magazine article,
- 29:44Speaker 3: and then it got turned into a movie. Oh great movie. Yeah,
- 29:47Speaker 3: they ran Michigan or not.
- 29:49Speaker 1: And they had seventy two hours, kids, wives, everybody. Yeah,
- 29:53Speaker 1: they ran every number, imprementation possibly by yeah, and then
- 29:57Speaker 1: had a storage system. They do the draw, they go
- 30:00Speaker 1: into their little thing like here's the ticket, right, they're
- 30:03Speaker 1: passing a lot like and I and as the last
- 30:06Speaker 1: I knew, everyone looked at it every which way looking
- 30:09Speaker 1: for why that's illegal. Yeah, as far as I know,
- 30:12Speaker 1: it's not. Yeah. So now that now, the Texas legislature
- 30:16Speaker 1: is like changing their rules to make it that.
- 30:18Speaker 3: You can't do that, and they're all mad and they're
- 30:20Speaker 3: trying to make it look like these people screwed up
- 30:22Speaker 3: because there are a bunch of politicians who don't want
- 30:24Speaker 3: to admit that they wrote stupid rules for a game that. Yeah,
- 30:28Speaker 3: these guys like we won far and square. Yeah, they
- 30:30Speaker 3: just how smart them. They're like, dude, you wrote these rules.
- 30:32Speaker 3: We read the rules that you wrote, we played the
- 30:33Speaker 3: game according to the rules.
- 30:35Speaker 1: Don't be mad at me, Eddie. That's right, that's right.
- 30:40Speaker 3: Eddie actually put a little extra code in there that
- 30:42Speaker 3: made it made it predictable. So that's why that's the difference.
- 30:45Speaker 3: That's why he went to prison. And these people got
- 30:47Speaker 3: a bunch of money.
- 30:47Speaker 1: These people get to hang out. Yeah yeah, all right,
- 30:50Speaker 1: one last thing then we're going to I got to
- 30:52Speaker 1: order in my head. Yeah yeah. So we talked about
- 30:55Speaker 1: the when you we're doing that Department of what it's
- 30:58Speaker 1: called again, like yeah, I was.
- 31:01Speaker 3: Yeah, so I was assistant Attorney general and prosecute atorney
- 31:03Speaker 3: general some violent crime, but the focus was financial crime.
- 31:08Speaker 1: And then you're now the state auditor.
- 31:11Speaker 3: That's right. That's an elected position elected in Iowa. Yeah,
- 31:15Speaker 3: so it's a mix in different states. Easiest way to
- 31:17Speaker 3: understand it is it's like closest thing to taxpayers watchdog.
- 31:20Speaker 3: So we audit tax spenders, not tax payers.
- 31:24Speaker 1: Give me an example of a tax spender, the state
- 31:27Speaker 1: of the state government, Highway Department, dot, Department of Education.
- 31:32Speaker 3: If a county or a city or a school district
- 31:34Speaker 3: hires us for their annual audit, we do their audit,
- 31:37Speaker 3: and then we do special investigations under certain circumstances.
- 31:40Speaker 1: Got it is that a competitive field if you go
- 31:42Speaker 1: to try to get elected.
- 31:44Speaker 3: Well sure, I mean, at the end of the day,
- 31:46Speaker 3: anytime you got a race, Iowa was still the at
- 31:49Speaker 3: its heart is a fairly competitive state that doesn't mean
- 31:52Speaker 3: that every race is competitive, but when you're looking statewide,
- 31:55Speaker 3: you know it can go either way.
- 31:56Speaker 1: So most people will run against you reason for a
- 31:59Speaker 1: period it's time. My mother was the treasurer of her
- 32:01Speaker 1: township thirty six square miles, all right, big chunk of ground.
- 32:05Speaker 3: I'm betting she didn't have a lot of competition for that.
- 32:07Speaker 1: She would sometimes it would be that no one would
- 32:09Speaker 1: run against it, yep, which makes it very easy to win.
- 32:12Speaker 3: That's that's much better. Yeah, I would prefer that. That
- 32:15Speaker 3: would be great. I could actually spend a lot more
- 32:17Speaker 3: time hunting and hanging out with my kids. So you
- 32:20Speaker 3: won that, Yeah, four years, re elected in twenty two.
- 32:26Speaker 3: And to your point, when I won in eighteen, that
- 32:28Speaker 3: was the first time in Iowa and in thirty six years,
- 32:31Speaker 3: which I think was my life. Basically I was thirty
- 32:33Speaker 3: six at the time, but basically the first time in
- 32:35Speaker 3: my life that a statewide incumbent Republican lost to a
- 32:41Speaker 3: Democratic challenger. So as auditor as no, for any state
- 32:46Speaker 3: wide I think any statewide office. We tend to re
- 32:50Speaker 3: elect our incumbents in Iowa. There's exceptions, but yeah, and.
- 32:54Speaker 1: We were talking about running for governor and we're not
- 32:58Speaker 1: going to get into this X. We're a top about
- 33:00Speaker 1: deer good running for governor. It's it's this is the
- 33:03Speaker 1: first time in some long period of time that it's
- 33:07Speaker 1: an open race.
- 33:08Speaker 3: Yeah, first time. Let's see basically since first time in
- 33:11Speaker 3: twenty years.
- 33:12Speaker 1: God, yep, yep.
- 33:14Speaker 3: So it was, uh, you'll going back to people on
- 33:18Speaker 3: the inside. One of the things that kind of made
- 33:20Speaker 3: me push to do it was so we uncovered a
- 33:23Speaker 3: record amount of mispent money in my first term I
- 33:25Speaker 3: get re elected. The response to Democrats and Republicans and
- 33:30Speaker 3: independence in Iowa re electing me was the legislature and
- 33:34Speaker 3: the governor passed the law so that state agencies can
- 33:36Speaker 3: hide evidence of misspent tax dollars from our office, can
- 33:40Speaker 3: hide I understand, I know, because why would you ever
- 33:45Speaker 3: do that? Right, that's wrong, it's bad. Yes, that's what
- 33:48Speaker 3: they did.
- 33:49Speaker 1: But help me understand, Like, what's the argument for hiding evidence?
- 33:53Speaker 3: Oh well, oh, that's that's the argument you got to make.
- 33:56Speaker 3: You gotta have words come out of your mouth. It's
- 33:58Speaker 3: all bs, the words that would coming out of their mouth.
- 34:01Speaker 3: We're oh, well, we're trying to protect your privacy, got it?
- 34:04Speaker 3: Privacy for waste fright and abuse of my tax dollars.
- 34:06Speaker 3: I don't want privacy for that.
- 34:08Speaker 1: Got it.
- 34:08Speaker 3: Every every government watchdog in the country that weighed in
- 34:11Speaker 3: on this law, Democrats, Independence, Republicans, they were all like, don't, don't,
- 34:16Speaker 3: don't do this. This is terrible. You're going to see
- 34:18Speaker 3: an increase in waste of tax dollars if you pass
- 34:21Speaker 3: this law. They passed it anyway because they because they
- 34:23Speaker 3: saw that we were like, you know, doing the job,
- 34:26Speaker 3: and they were like, hey, he's making he's letting people
- 34:31Speaker 3: know what's happening. We can't have that.
- 34:33Speaker 1: Got it. So but then you wont after that, No,
- 34:37Speaker 1: I got re elected. Then they did that, So that
- 34:40Speaker 1: made the job less fun. Oh.
- 34:42Speaker 3: I mean we're about to do something important. We're about
- 34:44Speaker 3: to tell people a big deal. We're trying to hold
- 34:47Speaker 3: people cutable. And they're like, h we don't want you
- 34:49Speaker 3: to look at that. Oh, well, what am I doing here?
- 34:53Speaker 1: Then? Huh?
- 34:55Speaker 3: There was a there was I remember one of the
- 34:57Speaker 3: quotes from someone who was like on the Government Oversight
- 34:59Speaker 3: Committee for the American Institute CPAs was like, if you
- 35:03Speaker 3: pass this law, you may as well make it so
- 35:04Speaker 3: you don't have a state auditor.
- 35:06Speaker 1: Oh. That's what they did, and that's what they're like, that's
- 35:08Speaker 1: what we mean. Yeah, they were like, perfect, let's pass
- 35:12Speaker 1: this sucker. That's just the endorsement they wanted. Huh yeah yeah.
- 35:16Speaker 1: So yeah, job suddenly became less interesting, less fun. I really,
- 35:21Speaker 1: I mean, this is a piece of this is rooted
- 35:23Speaker 1: in my faith. My faith, as those stories mentioned, very
- 35:25Speaker 1: important to me. One of the stories that always stuck
- 35:27Speaker 1: out to me in as a kid was Jesus flipping
- 35:32Speaker 1: over the tables of the money changers in a temple,
- 35:35Speaker 1: people in a position of trust and power right who
- 35:37Speaker 1: were abusing that trust and power. And I love the
- 35:39Speaker 1: work I was doing as a prosecutor, going after corrupt
- 35:42Speaker 1: public officials, corrupt financial advisors who prey on people's trust right,
- 35:47Speaker 1: who use their position to get more for themselves. I
- 35:50Speaker 1: love the work of holding people accountable who are in
- 35:52Speaker 1: charge of tax dollars, making sure that they knew that
- 35:55Speaker 1: someone was looking at them and didn't care about the
- 35:57Speaker 1: power that they had, but cared about whether or not
- 35:59Speaker 1: they were doing the right thing. And then you change
- 36:02Speaker 1: that law and you take that away, and it's like, well,
- 36:04Speaker 1: I don't want to do this anymore, and it makes
- 36:06Speaker 1: it all the more important to say. Sounds like we
- 36:08Speaker 1: need a new governor, someone who's going to give the
- 36:11Speaker 1: auditor their power back and do a bunch of other
- 36:13Speaker 1: good stuff at the same time. That's kind of the idea.
- 36:16Speaker 1: Let's jump into deer please. That's a sealed deal. That's
- 36:20Speaker 1: what sealed deal. Yeah, he got a really big buck
- 36:23Speaker 1: in an urban hunting program. Yes, yes, boom done, So
- 36:29Speaker 1: explain it. So you're in des Moines, yep, Okay, what
- 36:32Speaker 1: is the urban hunting program in des Moin?
- 36:34Speaker 3: What I can tell you of it. I've been doing
- 36:36Speaker 3: it for I think thirteen years. And many Iowa municipalities
- 36:40Speaker 3: have got an urban hunting program because we got big
- 36:42Speaker 3: white tail over the state and you know, they're eating
- 36:45Speaker 3: people's hostas and all that, and you always get a
- 36:48Speaker 3: divide on the people who want you to take them
- 36:50Speaker 3: and don't. But most cities have got a program bow
- 36:55Speaker 3: hunting only you got to shoot from an elevated position
- 36:58Speaker 3: so that your arrow's going into the ground, be in
- 37:00Speaker 3: a stand. You have to take an annual every single year.
- 37:03Speaker 3: You got to repass your marksmanship test so that they
- 37:06Speaker 3: always know is.
- 37:07Speaker 1: It a serious test?
- 37:09Speaker 3: It's not super I would call it a proficiency people
- 37:12Speaker 3: called it proficiency test. So it's like ten arrows from
- 37:15Speaker 3: fifteen yards and ten arrows from twenty yards at a
- 37:18Speaker 3: nine inch target. It's not hard, got it? And they
- 37:22Speaker 3: don't want you to take shots beyond about twenty five yards.
- 37:25Speaker 3: So yeah, like if someone said, hey, is he a
- 37:27Speaker 3: good shot? And you said it's proficient, proficient, Yeah, yeah,
- 37:30Speaker 3: that feels right. Yeah, you know what you're doing, and
- 37:33Speaker 3: tell me to get so ten shots ten I think
- 37:36Speaker 3: it's ten from twenty yards and ten from fifteen yards
- 37:39Speaker 3: at a nine inch target?
- 37:40Speaker 1: Got it? And you got to hit do you gotta
- 37:43Speaker 1: do a background check and all that.
- 37:44Speaker 3: I don't think if you had to do a background
- 37:47Speaker 3: check it would have been maybe at the beginning. You
- 37:48Speaker 3: do have to take a bow hunter's safety course at
- 37:51Speaker 3: one point in your life, which is awesome because I
- 37:54Speaker 3: did that when I was like fourteen, and so when
- 37:57Speaker 3: I found out about the Urban Hunting Program and it
- 37:59Speaker 3: was like already November the first year, I was like,
- 38:02Speaker 3: I gotta do what now? And I was like, oh, man,
- 38:04Speaker 3: I did that? Hey Dad, didn't I do that? Isn't
- 38:06Speaker 3: that class you made me take?
- 38:07Speaker 1: Yeah? Great?
- 38:08Speaker 3: Now I just got to go find my certificate. Okay,
- 38:10Speaker 3: but once you do that, so then so then it's
- 38:12Speaker 3: an incentive program. But but the landowners are participating, they
- 38:15Speaker 3: have to participate. Obviously there are parks and stuff. There
- 38:18Speaker 3: are parks, and there's a system for doing the park hunting.
- 38:21Speaker 3: I've always done private land hunting, either our backyard or
- 38:27Speaker 3: somebody I know. And then for this one, I locked.
- 38:29Speaker 3: I knocked a lot of doors. But yeah, there's parks.
- 38:34Speaker 3: What else do I need to add here? It's an
- 38:36Speaker 3: incentive system. So every year to get a urban buck
- 38:39Speaker 3: tag in the city of Des Moines, you got to
- 38:41Speaker 3: take three antlerless year.
- 38:43Speaker 1: The year before. Man, that's earn a buck on steroids. Yeah, yeah,
- 38:48Speaker 1: there's and it's different for because they're trying to lower
- 38:51Speaker 1: numbers and they don't want a lot of they don't
- 38:52Speaker 1: want a lot of funny business. Yeah that's right. And
- 38:55Speaker 1: they don't want big buck hunters flocking in.
- 38:57Speaker 3: No, they it's a it's a very like you got
- 39:00Speaker 3: to you got to earn that urban tag for a
- 39:02Speaker 3: antlered buck.
- 39:04Speaker 1: Okay, so twenty twenty four and it resets I gather.
- 39:09Speaker 3: Yes, and it doesn't get that gets you into the lottery. Now,
- 39:13Speaker 3: most years. Oh, if you're in the lottery, most lottery, Yeah,
- 39:17Speaker 3: most years. If you're in you if you get the
- 39:19Speaker 3: three and you make it into the lottery, you will
- 39:21Speaker 3: get an urban buck tag. God, but you're not guaranteed.
- 39:24Speaker 3: You may not. And so most years I've gotten one,
- 39:27Speaker 3: but there's other years where you don't.
- 39:29Speaker 1: And how are you showing that you got the three deer?
- 39:31Speaker 3: You have to check them in. So it used to
- 39:32Speaker 3: be in person and then I don't remember if it
- 39:35Speaker 3: was COVID or not, but they switched it to an
- 39:37Speaker 3: online system. You got to you got to fill out
- 39:39Speaker 3: your tag, you got to do your time, and you
- 39:41Speaker 3: gotta submit photographs too, so that they have some certainty
- 39:46Speaker 3: that this is a fresh, unique deer each time.
- 39:49Speaker 1: Got it. So the first year participating in the urban hunt,
- 39:52Speaker 1: no chance for bucks. You got to do your three doughs.
- 39:54Speaker 1: That's right, that's right, yep.
- 39:56Speaker 3: Oh yeah, and uh And this year a guy sent
- 40:00Speaker 3: me a picture I'd put a post up. I was like, hey,
- 40:06Speaker 3: I'm uh, I'd never done that before. Usually just hunted
- 40:10Speaker 3: where hunted. Hey, I'm looking for a big buck in
- 40:12Speaker 3: des Moine. I've got my urban buck tag. If you
- 40:14Speaker 3: know anyone, let me know if you.
- 40:16Speaker 1: Know anyone that has a big bug I neighborhood, if
- 40:20Speaker 1: you've seen a big buck in your neighborhood, let me know.
- 40:23Speaker 3: And this guy had met at a party like ten
- 40:26Speaker 3: or fifteen years ago.
- 40:26Speaker 1: That's one of those ones where you're like, it's so stupid,
- 40:29Speaker 1: it might work, yeah exactly, because like, well, who would
- 40:31Speaker 1: want to tell another guy about a big buck?
- 40:33Speaker 3: And that's the thing.
- 40:34Speaker 1: But it might be just a guy that doesn't care.
- 40:36Speaker 3: Yes, well, and a lot of these people are like
- 40:39Speaker 3: that that that buck's eating my hostas.
- 40:41Speaker 1: Yeah, that buck, this that the other. Because if I
- 40:44Speaker 1: did an all company email, yeah yeah, And I said,
- 40:46Speaker 1: if anyone knows about large buck exactly, let me know, right,
- 40:51Speaker 1: I wouldn't.
- 40:51Speaker 3: I'm not going to get replies. Yeah, but this is
- 40:55Speaker 3: the city of Des Moines. People want you to take
- 40:56Speaker 3: a deer, right and uh, A lot of people are
- 41:01Speaker 3: just like yeah, here you go. Now there's not that many.
- 41:04Speaker 3: There's now most of the hunters that are in the
- 41:06Speaker 3: program who knew of this buck were like, hey, man,
- 41:10Speaker 3: good for you. I did a lot of work, so
- 41:13Speaker 3: he gave me one. I had one picture, man, I
- 41:16Speaker 3: hoofed it.
- 41:17Speaker 1: But there's no way the buck is only using one property.
- 41:19Speaker 1: Oh no, he's he's all over. There are other people
- 41:22Speaker 1: that knew of him.
- 41:22Speaker 3: Actually the guy that measured him and and he this
- 41:25Speaker 3: is green measure. He measured two nine.
- 41:28Speaker 1: Yeah, so and he'd fill that is very very big.
- 41:34Speaker 2: Oh yeah, maybe we wait, should we.
- 41:38Speaker 1: Should? Well? Which which photo?
- 41:41Speaker 3: Or are we looking at the ones in the in the.
- 41:44Speaker 2: Dock, live live maybe trail.
- 41:47Speaker 1: In the autumn and the autumn of his life.
- 41:49Speaker 3: That's actually the picture he sent me.
- 41:51Speaker 1: That's literally the one he's like, Hey, this one lives
- 41:53Speaker 1: by me and so and so when I when I
- 41:55Speaker 1: when I came to and picked myself up up the
- 41:57Speaker 1: floor and looked again at that buck. He' said yeah,
- 42:00Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't want to waste your time,
- 42:02Speaker 1: but like this buck's hanging around, so it seems kind
- 42:04Speaker 1: of nice.
- 42:04Speaker 2: Yeah, describe. I mean that just looks like a tang.
- 42:07Speaker 3: Yeah, if you're if you're listening, main mainframe ten pointer.
- 42:11Speaker 3: In this picture, you can see a one big drop
- 42:13Speaker 3: time and a second smaller brow time which you can't
- 42:17Speaker 3: see in this picture is actually a second drop coming
- 42:20Speaker 3: off of that same g one go yeah, and he
- 42:24Speaker 3: and and What's the funny thing in the picture is
- 42:26Speaker 3: he looks young, but it's because his rack is so
- 42:29Speaker 3: huge and he's in velvet, so you know, there's always
- 42:33Speaker 3: a little shrinkage, but not that much.
- 42:36Speaker 1: When he when the guy reaches out. When the guy
- 42:38Speaker 1: reaches out, yeah, well, first off, how far I'm not
- 42:43Speaker 1: familiar with des Moies. Like what he says, it's in
- 42:45Speaker 1: this area. This is an area you.
- 42:47Speaker 3: I'm like, yeah, yeah, I'm like, where do you live?
- 42:49Speaker 3: He gives me his address, like thank you. You know,
- 42:53Speaker 3: have you seen him other places? He's like no, I
- 42:55Speaker 3: think he's only seen him once or twice. And from
- 42:57Speaker 3: that point I just go to work.
- 42:59Speaker 1: You know.
- 42:59Speaker 3: It's just this, This is scouting. It's just more complicated
- 43:02Speaker 3: when each postage stamp is another landowner. So I'm on
- 43:06Speaker 3: on X, I'm looking at where he lives. I'm looking at,
- 43:10Speaker 3: you know, topography, and figured out if I was a
- 43:12Speaker 3: buck over there, where would I go?
- 43:14Speaker 1: And I go.
- 43:15Speaker 3: I knocked doors, just cold knocked on people's doors. I
- 43:19Speaker 3: called people if I could get their phone numbers, just
- 43:21Speaker 3: called them up. Hey, my name is Rob. There's an
- 43:24Speaker 3: urban bow hunting program in de Moining to help.
- 43:26Speaker 1: Population controls all your prosecutor training. That's right.
- 43:30Speaker 3: Well, I'm just opening with a story, you know, just
- 43:32Speaker 3: letting them know why I'm calling. And I'm wondering if
- 43:36Speaker 3: you're interested. I've been in the program for thirteen years.
- 43:40Speaker 3: It's never any issues for anybody. But I'm looking to
- 43:45Speaker 3: hunt in your area, and I'm wondering if you'd be
- 43:46Speaker 3: interested in letting me hunt on your property. Happy to
- 43:48Speaker 3: answer all your questions. Some of the average acreage, oh
- 43:53Speaker 3: these houses, I means than less than an acre for
- 43:58Speaker 3: a lot of them, now a handful of them more
- 44:01Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm going out in the evenings
- 44:05Speaker 3: and knocking. I'm making phone calls. Some people are yes,
- 44:09Speaker 3: some people are now. Occasionally people know me. Like one
- 44:11Speaker 3: guy actually had my yard sign in his yard, so
- 44:14Speaker 3: I was like, okay, my odds here.
- 44:15Speaker 1: Yeah. But then on the other hand, there were folks
- 44:17Speaker 1: to you but yeah, I'll not hear about that, but
- 44:20Speaker 1: thank you for putting my yard signed up.
- 44:22Speaker 3: He's like, rap, sand, you're knocking my door. I was like, well, yes,
- 44:24Speaker 3: I am knocking your door, but you'll be surprised as
- 44:27Speaker 3: to why. And I'm setting up cameras, you know, trying
- 44:30Speaker 3: to figure out where where this guy is zero zeroing in.
- 44:34Speaker 3: And I had other people say, man, if I was
- 44:35Speaker 3: gonna let anybody hunt here, i'd let you. I'm with you,
- 44:38Speaker 3: But I'm not gonna let you hunt here, you know.
- 44:40Speaker 3: So it's just it totally depends, totally depends. Some couples,
- 44:44Speaker 3: you know, you'd have the wife would be the one
- 44:46Speaker 3: who's like, no, don't hunt your other couples is a
- 44:48Speaker 3: husband be the one who's like, no, we don't. I
- 44:49Speaker 3: don't want you to hunt here.
- 44:51Speaker 1: And so I'm just I'm I'm I'm hitting out, I'm
- 44:54Speaker 1: striking out here, I'm hitting singles here, setting up cameras
- 44:57Speaker 1: zeroing in over the course of probably six weeks and
- 45:00Speaker 1: summer time. Are you ever driving around and see.
- 45:03Speaker 3: It one time? Not driving but well, okay, I'm i'm am,
- 45:09Speaker 3: I'm on my bike. I'm either on my because I
- 45:11Speaker 3: would take bike rides in the neighborhood to scout. It
- 45:14Speaker 3: was bikeable from my house, and so I'd get on
- 45:17Speaker 3: my bike and instead of going east like I might
- 45:19Speaker 3: normally do, I'd go west and just bike around and
- 45:21Speaker 3: be like ooh, because you know, there's stuff you can't
- 45:24Speaker 3: see on on X you don't know, and you can
- 45:27Speaker 3: see the path and all that. So but one time
- 45:30Speaker 3: I drove into a property. I was going to go
- 45:33Speaker 3: knock the door, and I look over there and there's
- 45:36Speaker 3: one of the guys in his bachelor group, one of
- 45:38Speaker 3: the other bucks. Oh yeah, And so I was, you know,
- 45:42Speaker 3: hair on the back of my neck. It's like, all right, right,
- 45:44Speaker 3: we're in the right spot here. We're making progress. So
- 45:47Speaker 3: by the time we get to opening day, I got
- 45:51Speaker 3: three properties where I've had him moving in the daylight
- 45:54Speaker 3: on camera. What's opening day September sixteenth, something like that,
- 46:01Speaker 3: like middle of September, and I set up there's it's
- 46:06Speaker 3: been a southerly wind. So I set up on one
- 46:08Speaker 3: where I like my chances. I got permission from two
- 46:11Speaker 3: adjoining property owners. That's great because that means I can
- 46:14Speaker 3: be sitting in one, but it's a small property, so
- 46:17Speaker 3: I can shoot into the other. This is very helpful
- 46:19Speaker 3: because they both signed the document. You got to get
- 46:21Speaker 3: it signed document if you're doing private land.
- 46:23Speaker 1: I got an interrupt the story to say, well, clarifying question, Yeah,
- 46:26Speaker 1: what are the retrieval rules here?
- 46:31Speaker 3: You know, it's it's just it's be so careful that
- 46:36Speaker 3: the rules. Well, so technically speaking, in state of Iowa,
- 46:39Speaker 3: if you have an animal that you have taken, you
- 46:43Speaker 3: have you have legal capacity to take the most direct
- 46:47Speaker 3: line to that animal across someone else's property. Now you
- 46:50Speaker 3: ask law enforcement about that, and smart law enforcement. I'll
- 46:52Speaker 3: tell you. Please ask. It's not that you have to
- 46:54Speaker 3: ask permission. Just tell them. We don't want some we
- 46:57Speaker 3: don't want altercations. We don't want someone out there with
- 47:00Speaker 3: a gun being like, what are you doing on my property?
- 47:01Speaker 3: So proper courtesy, best practice, knock on somebody's door. Now
- 47:06Speaker 3: I've been I've been lucky. I have never had to
- 47:09Speaker 3: I've never had an issue with that. You do got
- 47:12Speaker 3: to let folks know that you're hunting there, if you're
- 47:16Speaker 3: if you're like next door, and so a lot of
- 47:19Speaker 3: these folks when I would call them and be like, hey,
- 47:21Speaker 3: I'm going to be hunting in your neighborhood. You know
- 47:24Speaker 3: I'm interested also in hunting on your property. So there's
- 47:27Speaker 3: a notification.
- 47:28Speaker 1: In all these years though, I mean, when you shoot,
- 47:31Speaker 1: you have to put the arrow. I noticed that, Yeah,
- 47:33Speaker 1: there's an arrow. There's a mark on that buck where
- 47:36Speaker 1: that mark is supposed to be. But that's got to
- 47:39Speaker 1: be a real thing. Yeah yeah, yeah, you know you
- 47:41Speaker 1: can't be chasing them three hundred yards.
- 47:43Speaker 3: No, you got to be careful.
- 47:45Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, So go on where were we you were?
- 47:49Speaker 1: You had two properties, shoot onto the other one.
- 47:52Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, because I got adjoining landowners, they both so
- 47:56Speaker 3: to do private you got to have them sign a document,
- 47:58Speaker 3: you know, the city's official document. The city's got to
- 48:01Speaker 3: come out and inspect the property and say like, okay,
- 48:03Speaker 3: these distances, separation requirements. Everything's good, all right, Yeah, yeah,
- 48:07Speaker 3: they're well. I mean I was hunting not far. You know,
- 48:12Speaker 3: this is urban hunting, right, Like the guys at Seek one,
- 48:15Speaker 3: you know they talk about about this. You got all
- 48:16Speaker 3: these new variables. Dogs, right, I've had dogs chase away
- 48:21Speaker 3: a buck before. You got people out there on a
- 48:24Speaker 3: walk in a park. You could have a biker out
- 48:26Speaker 3: there if you're in a park. And so they're real
- 48:28Speaker 3: careful about where people go. So opening day, I go
- 48:32Speaker 3: out that first full weekend, I sit Saturday twice, I
- 48:37Speaker 3: sit Sunday twice. Sunday morning, two minutes into hunting light,
- 48:43Speaker 3: I've been in my stand for forty five minutes.
- 48:47Speaker 1: There is is that him? Is it him?
- 48:51Speaker 3: And you know like, you know how when you're right
- 48:54Speaker 3: at hunting light, it's like, if you're in a field, great,
- 48:56Speaker 3: plenty of light, but if you're in the woods, still
- 48:59Speaker 3: not there. And because remember I mentioned I had seen
- 49:04Speaker 3: his buddy in his bachelor group, the buddy in his
- 49:06Speaker 3: bachelor group had one of the same drop times, narrower frame,
- 49:10Speaker 3: shorter times, but close enough that at two minutes into
- 49:15Speaker 3: hunting light under a bunch.
- 49:16Speaker 1: Of oak trees, I'm like, is it him? Is it him? God?
- 49:20Speaker 3: And I wait and I wait, and I probably wait
- 49:23Speaker 3: three minutes. That's probably all it takes for me to
- 49:26Speaker 3: be like, it's him. And by the time i'm drawn,
- 49:29Speaker 3: he's out of range.
- 49:31Speaker 1: So that's that. Oh, it was him. It was him.
- 49:34Speaker 1: It was him.
- 49:35Speaker 3: But I'm waiting because if I it was the buddy.
- 49:39Speaker 1: Wasn't You were worried about the looklike buddy.
- 49:42Speaker 3: I was worried about the look like buddy because I noticed, Okay,
- 49:45Speaker 3: this looks like him. It's a it's a big mature
- 49:47Speaker 3: You wanted to make sure it was not, Yeah, because
- 49:50Speaker 3: there is no you get your one, you know, and
- 49:53Speaker 3: I didn't want to screw this up.
- 49:54Speaker 1: And you paused, and there goes your opportunity.
- 49:56Speaker 3: Yeah, which I'm glad I did it. Yeah, you know,
- 49:59Speaker 3: but there he went. So what A week later, I'm
- 50:06Speaker 3: setting up a stand on another property and I turn
- 50:09Speaker 3: around in the areas so I freeze, can't move. I'm
- 50:14Speaker 3: there for ten minutes. Finally he just wanders away. And
- 50:18Speaker 3: so I had two sightings on him, and then the
- 50:20Speaker 3: next and then so let's see, So the first two weekends,
- 50:23Speaker 3: I'm out literally, I'm sitting Saturday till noon, lunch break,
- 50:27Speaker 3: hang out with my family, my family a little bit,
- 50:30Speaker 3: go out, sit for the afternoon into the evening both
- 50:32Speaker 3: Saturday and Sunday, skipping church. Lord forgive me. Uh October
- 50:37Speaker 3: then and then I see him twice in that timeframe.
- 50:41Speaker 3: And then like this first weekend in October, there's this
- 50:45Speaker 3: cold front coming in. I'm like, all right, this is it.
- 50:48Speaker 3: And I'm running for governor. By the way, at the
- 50:51Speaker 3: same time, I'm doing one hundred public town halls, one
- 50:55Speaker 3: in every single county across the state. And as this
- 50:58Speaker 3: cold front is coming in, by the way, I'm sitting,
- 51:00Speaker 3: I'm getting him on camera. Steve, it's eighty five degrees.
- 51:02Speaker 1: But why are you already running for governor?
- 51:04Speaker 2: Then?
- 51:04Speaker 3: How long you got to run find isn't that stupid?
- 51:07Speaker 3: Eighteen months?
- 51:08Speaker 1: You run for governor for eighteen months.
- 51:09Speaker 3: I wasn't even the first person in the race, but yeah,
- 51:12Speaker 3: campaigns are that long these days.
- 51:13Speaker 1: Yeah, so you're running for governor hunting.
- 51:15Speaker 3: I'm running for governor hunting and doing my day job
- 51:17Speaker 3: and trying to be a dad and a husband. Yeah,
- 51:20Speaker 3: some days are better than others. But you know, I'm
- 51:24Speaker 3: doing all these town halls all across the states. I
- 51:26Speaker 3: travel a lot, and here comes this cold front. Finally,
- 51:29Speaker 3: because again, this buck, this is a two hundred nine
- 51:32Speaker 3: inch buck. He's moving in eighty five degree heat. I've
- 51:35Speaker 3: got him on camera, you know. And so I'm out
- 51:39Speaker 3: there just sweating, sitting at my stand, praying that I'll
- 51:43Speaker 3: be in the shade because if the sun hits me,
- 51:46Speaker 3: it's over. But finally we get this cold front coming in,
- 51:49Speaker 3: and I'm like, Okay, this is it because I got
- 51:52Speaker 3: basically a day to hunt this cold front. After that,
- 51:54Speaker 3: I'm on the road and what I'm thinking is, you know,
- 51:57Speaker 3: I know there's other people who are looking for this buck.
- 52:02Speaker 3: I bet I've been. This is part of the reason
- 52:04Speaker 3: I'm hunting so hard, because if I don't get him.
- 52:09Speaker 3: When this cold front hits, he's probably going to be
- 52:11Speaker 3: moving more and someone else is going to put their
- 52:13Speaker 3: tag on him, which good for them if that's what happens,
- 52:15Speaker 3: Good for them. But I'm working hard when By the way,
- 52:18Speaker 3: I've never done much early season hunting before big fan
- 52:21Speaker 3: now because you can go out after work and you
- 52:24Speaker 3: still got two hours of daylight. Oh, which one of
- 52:26Speaker 3: the cool things about urban hunting. No, it's not like
- 52:28Speaker 3: dark at five o'clock. Yeah, and your commute to your
- 52:30Speaker 3: standards five minutes, so you're just like, all right, well,
- 52:33Speaker 3: drive over there and climb up. There's one property that
- 52:35Speaker 3: I hunt where i'm I'm I drive into a parking
- 52:38Speaker 3: lot at like a printing chop, and there's this chunk
- 52:41Speaker 3: of woods over there, and I just drive in back
- 52:43Speaker 3: park in the back corner, and I walk about thirty
- 52:45Speaker 3: yards and I'm in my tree. Can see your car, Yeah,
- 52:49Speaker 3: I can see my car. I can see people come
- 52:51Speaker 3: out for their smoke brakes. You know, like all these
- 52:53Speaker 3: different variables that just make the urban stuff a little
- 52:55Speaker 3: bit more complicated.
- 52:57Speaker 2: You got to do an episode urban Hunting Station.
- 53:00Speaker 1: It's it's it's a trip. I mean yeah, I'd have Yeah,
- 53:04Speaker 1: it's a trip. I'd like, dude, I'd be nerve. I'd
- 53:05Speaker 1: be it'd be nerve wracking. I I'd be all all
- 53:10Speaker 1: I'd be sitting there is being like, man, I don't
- 53:12Speaker 1: want to trail the deer all through the neighborhood. I
- 53:16Speaker 1: do know a guy.
- 53:17Speaker 3: I do know a guy I used to work with
- 53:19Speaker 3: who was at the Attorney General's office who had a
- 53:21Speaker 3: bad experience where somebody did not have fantastic arrow placement. Yeah,
- 53:26Speaker 3: and the and the deer, I think with an arrow
- 53:28Speaker 3: and it came into his backyard. But that is I've
- 53:30Speaker 3: been doing this urban program, I think for thirteen years.
- 53:33Speaker 3: That's actually the only story I know. God of a
- 53:35Speaker 3: bad thing.
- 53:36Speaker 1: Yeah, because probably people take it. They're so aware of
- 53:39Speaker 1: the problem they probably self limit. Yeah.
- 53:43Speaker 3: Yeah, and everyone who's in this program, it's a it's
- 53:46Speaker 3: a cool thing to be able to do. And so
- 53:47Speaker 3: we're we're careful, you know. So cold front. It's raining.
- 53:52Speaker 3: I go out in the morning, it's raining, I soak
- 53:55Speaker 3: through my boots. I come in for midday break, go
- 54:00Speaker 3: back out, put on my insulated boots instead, climb back up.
- 54:05Speaker 3: It's and then it just opens up it's dump and rain.
- 54:08Speaker 3: I'm like, okay, he's not gonna move in this kind
- 54:11Speaker 3: of weather. So climb out thirty yards to my truck
- 54:15Speaker 3: in this in this guy's driveway. Sit in my truck
- 54:17Speaker 3: for forty five minutes. It lightens up. It's still raining,
- 54:23Speaker 3: but it lightens up. I'm like, all right, we got
- 54:24Speaker 3: forty five minutes. Here, go back out there, climb back up.
- 54:30Speaker 3: You know, I'm sitting there for ten minutes to look up.
- 54:32Speaker 3: There he is, and what's you do rubbing? And I'm like, okay,
- 54:40Speaker 3: here we go. It's still it's still it's still coming down,
- 54:44Speaker 3: but it's not it's not terribly heavy. And the angle
- 54:47Speaker 3: he's at, the spot he's at, I have to get.
- 54:51Speaker 3: I'm in this really unique tree that like juts out,
- 54:55Speaker 3: and so I have my climbing sticks up to here
- 54:57Speaker 3: and then I can stand here even though the tree
- 54:59Speaker 3: keeps going one I'm like, I need to get lower.
- 55:02Speaker 3: So I get onto my top climbing stick and I
- 55:04Speaker 3: take like I take like two steps down. I'm at
- 55:07Speaker 3: full draw and I slip. Now I do saddle hunting,
- 55:13Speaker 3: and so I'm always trying to keep my weight in
- 55:15Speaker 3: my saddle and so instead of falling, I just twist
- 55:20Speaker 3: out around the tree.
- 55:21Speaker 1: Yeah, gotcha at full draw. I'm just I'm just on
- 55:24Speaker 1: a ride, because yes, yes, I'm just on this really
- 55:28Speaker 1: exciting ride.
- 55:29Speaker 3: And uh, I quit swinging. I bumped the tree, but
- 55:33Speaker 3: it's rating and I didn't make much noise because again
- 55:37Speaker 3: there's no hook. My weight is already in the saddle. Yeah,
- 55:40Speaker 3: it's kind of swing out. I stop swinging. I let down.
- 55:44Speaker 3: I just get myself back onto my climbing stick. I
- 55:47Speaker 3: look over. He's still rubbing. No idea draw, that's it.
- 55:57Speaker 3: Forty yards yeah, still raining. So and the best part
- 56:03Speaker 3: about this because you go back to, you know, the
- 56:05Speaker 3: importance of just your hunting in an urban area. You
- 56:09Speaker 3: really don't want to upset people. Yeah, yeah, I'm hunting
- 56:12Speaker 3: at a property where the driveway has a retaining wall
- 56:17Speaker 3: that backs up to it, so I can back my
- 56:20Speaker 3: pickup up, lower the tailgate, and without having to field
- 56:24Speaker 3: dressed the deer in the rain out in the sky's yard,
- 56:28Speaker 3: just drag him in like a loading bay, yes, a
- 56:31Speaker 3: literal loading bay for two hundred nine inch bucks. And
- 56:36Speaker 3: then words, you head my dad's place. He got me
- 56:39Speaker 3: into hunting. It was pretty cool to take that take
- 56:42Speaker 3: him over, and I you know, I've been like, well,
- 56:44Speaker 3: I mean Grant too. But like there were people that
- 56:46Speaker 3: I was texting about this buck, like I was going hard.
- 56:49Speaker 3: I've never and I'm not a this is the first
- 56:53Speaker 3: time really that I had like a People say, you know,
- 56:56Speaker 3: target buck. I've never really had like a target buck.
- 56:59Speaker 3: I'll kind of I'm I might set up some cameras
- 57:01Speaker 3: kind of see who's around and be like, oh, I'd
- 57:02Speaker 3: shoot that if I saw it. But I'm not naming things.
- 57:05Speaker 3: You know, I usually go out in November, I'm busy.
- 57:08Speaker 1: What'd you name him? Be honest with you. He didn't
- 57:11Speaker 1: have a name. No, now is just like the buck.
- 57:14Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, I mean his name now is two o nine.
- 57:17Speaker 1: But but like you know, my dad, it was one
- 57:24Speaker 1: of the people I'm texting with right, Like he got
- 57:26Speaker 1: me into bow hunting when I was a teenager. And
- 57:29Speaker 1: it was really cool to be able to pull up
- 57:31Speaker 1: that picture that you've got up there is we are
- 57:33Speaker 1: in his driveway, you know.
- 57:36Speaker 3: And uh it was, and so my dad and I
- 57:38Speaker 3: are just flipping out. We get to that's the family history. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 57:43Speaker 3: and my dad so he my dad's the first generation hunter.
- 57:47Speaker 3: I'm almost certain like he might. He might have done squirrel.
- 57:51Speaker 3: And obviously you go back enough generations and everybody's doing it.
- 57:53Speaker 3: But my grandpa, Bob, his dad wasn't a bow hunter anyways,
- 57:58Speaker 3: wasn't it wasn't a deer hunter. But my dad got
- 58:00Speaker 3: me into bow hunting and we'd go out and do squirrel.
- 58:03Speaker 3: We do a lot of fishing together too, But it
- 58:05Speaker 3: was a pretty cool thing to share that with him.
- 58:07Speaker 1: So did you just grab that thing and just drag
- 58:09Speaker 1: it over to the retaining wall? Yes, and just out
- 58:12Speaker 1: of there quick. Yeah.
- 58:15Speaker 3: Rain, it's raining. I'm wet. I don't want to be
- 58:19Speaker 3: out here any longer than I have to. And and
- 58:21Speaker 3: I mean, you think about this stuff and it's like, look,
- 58:25Speaker 3: you're gonna leave a gut pile out in a guy's property.
- 58:28Speaker 1: No, you don't want to, might you? Yeah?
- 58:31Speaker 3: But when I can just do this, then I don't
- 58:34Speaker 3: have to worry about it.
- 58:35Speaker 1: Oh yeah. I think discreet is the way.
- 58:37Speaker 3: To go, especially if you want to get permission again
- 58:39Speaker 3: for next year, you know.
- 58:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I want to jump something for listeners. Before we
- 58:43Speaker 1: started recording, Rob saying here shared with me that he
- 58:49Speaker 1: well he could share with you your tax during your plan,
- 58:52Speaker 1: which I think is not good.
- 58:54Speaker 3: But oh yeah, yeah, yeah, I want the taxidermist and
- 58:58Speaker 3: I'm open minded. But I shot this thing in the
- 59:00Speaker 3: rain and that if you look at that picture, it's
- 59:03Speaker 3: that you know, the rack's got a nice shine on it,
- 59:06Speaker 3: and I talked to the taxidermist about making it look
- 59:08Speaker 3: like that when it's done, like kind of like a
- 59:11Speaker 3: lacquer on it to give it a shine. Steve thinks
- 59:13Speaker 3: that's a dumb idea.
- 59:14Speaker 1: Really, you can't. You'd be corrupting it. You can't paint
- 59:21Speaker 1: the antlers. Well, like maybe you could rub a little
- 59:27Speaker 1: what's that stuff that when your mom when you're like
- 59:29Speaker 1: a little kid, your mom would sprayed on the wood
- 59:30Speaker 1: furniture old English, Oh like whatever, spray the wood furniture. Yeah,
- 59:38Speaker 1: with an aerosol can. Yeah, I mean maybe now and
- 59:41Speaker 1: then a touch, but it's you don't want to generate
- 59:46Speaker 1: your children. Yeah, child, what in the world is all
- 59:50Speaker 1: over the antlers.
- 59:50Speaker 2: In that picture?
- 59:51Speaker 1: There's a nice shine And they'll take there's a nice
- 59:53Speaker 1: shine the laquer paint. They're not gonna because it was raining. No,
- 59:57Speaker 1: they'll know the answer. They'll know the answer. So I'll
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: just be the you lackrit it and it was dumb.
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: I had I had one buck with a big Roman nose,
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: and I had him recreate the Roman nose.
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: I I just to me that it's not when when
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: you when you do a shoulder mount. It's not just
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: this is that deer, but it's this is that moment.
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: And I always like to tell people, by the way,
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: you want to see the rest of them.
- 1:00:24Speaker 3: Come on into the State Auditor's office. I like to
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: call it the public sector Cabella's. You walk in and
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: you're like, oh, a lot of deer in here, and
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: a buffalo, then a turkey. But to me, that mount
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: is like if you can have it, be that moment
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: and bring that moment back, that's that's unique.
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: You know. An argument you could be laying on me
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: that I would buy, h huh is if you were
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: saying to me, listen, man, it's my buck. That's how
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: I want it. Oh yeah, because that's how I remember it. Yeah,
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: but I'm stuck thinking about posterity. Yeah, future generations being
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: why grample the deer, that's right.
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: That's right, have like a spray bottle and every now
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: and then.
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: Just moist like a plant, like a plant.
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: Yes, now that you say to your friends, you say
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: your friends or future generations just say, hey, you want
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: to see what it looked like when I shot it,
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: and it just spreads.
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: Hey, I'll tell me. I'll tell my son world, I'll
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: tell my sons. Hey, buddy, you got to water the
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: plants and the buck and the two O nine.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: I love that because everybody wants to see what it
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: looked like when I got it in the rain. I
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: love that. I love that idea. Yeah, that's the idea.
- 1:01:35Speaker 3: You know, we'll see they haven't tried it before, and
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: One of the things I was thinking about when with
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: uh Brooklyn sitting here is like, how much do you practice?
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: You know?
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: I need to find somebody who's willing to just just
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: runry dry run in that before I do it on
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: that one.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: Well, yeah, they can just take some other little sheds
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: or take some racks and try to figure out a
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: good right John Hayes Bill help you with that. I
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: don't know who that Hayes tax urmy studio. All right,
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: all right, if you want to drive it here and
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: very far from here, it's a wrong direction. It's a
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: scovil Taxidermy Scovel Taxadermy and Warren County, Iowa. He's in
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: the same state, but he's real far away right here, right,
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: all right? If you factor in so, factor in uh,
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: factor in people that would be jealous, factor in people
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: that would be just uncomfortable or opposed to hunting, and
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: then factor in people that would just love it that
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: you got that buck. Yeah, yeah, just getting the big buck.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: If you had the way out in your head like
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: here I am, I'm running for covenor. Is getting the
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: big buck net positive or net negative? Because a lot
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: of guys are gonna be like, he don't deserve that
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: big buck. That's right, I should have gotten that big buck.
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: I'm not voting for him. There is a guy that
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: definitely was was definitely saying that. One guy definitely saying that,
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: and some people are like, how could he hurt that
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: beautiful thing? Correct? I just literally replied to somebody about that.
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: I'm threads today, Okay, you know, I was like, how
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: could you do this? I mean, it's one thing if
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: you're eating it, but you're just hunting from now. The
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: law in the state of Iowa literally is you have
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: to you can't waste the meat.
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: It's just there's an sounding level of lack of curiosity
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: right about hunting, you know this, like people who just
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: don't know like you, you have to you have to
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: eat the animal. It's literally the law in the state
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: of Iowa. People don't know that salvage requirements yep, that too,
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: that too. I don't know how it breaks down to me.
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: I love hunting. I like to talk about things that
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: I love. My social media presence, whatever channel you're on,
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: it's probably robsand Ia, although I think on TikTok it's
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: Rob's hand Iowa. But my social media presence is like
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: I am a human being. I will put up a
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: post about the brito that I had for lunch, I'll
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: put up a post about going hunting, and then I'm
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: gonna put up a post about how dumb it was
- 1:03:46Speaker 3: to make it so that the auditor can't look at
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: mispent tax money, you know, like it's it's just like
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: these are basically like me. They're my accounts, and I
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: understand that some people that might make them upset, but
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: like I'm not gonna I'm not gonna not be who
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: I am, are going to be who I am. And
- 1:04:01Speaker 3: if some people don't like it, that's okay, but other
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: people do. The other thing is and I kind of
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: like this. I love the idea of surprising people when
- 1:04:10Speaker 3: it comes to partisanship expectations. Yeah right, yeah, I like
- 1:04:15Speaker 3: that all that stuff you talked about, right, was like, Oh,
- 1:04:18Speaker 3: look at this guy. He sounds like a Republican, but
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: he's a Democrat. Do you know what I sound those
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: descriptions to me? I'm like, that just sounds like somebody
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: from small town Iowa. Like a lot of people in
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: small town Iowa do that. Those values, those traditions, those
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: don't belong to a political party. And I love the
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: idea of being like out there is like, yeah, I
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: am a Democrat. Yeah, I do like to hunt.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: Now.
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: I'm also out there as someone who thinks that we
- 1:04:41Speaker 3: should end the special legal privileges of the Democratic and
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: the Republican parties. I've yet to hear a good reason
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: for why we are stuck having the lesser of two
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: evils on every freaking ballot and feeling like, well, you know,
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: you've never done a thing for me, but boy, this
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: one I really don't like. So I guess I have
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: to vote for you, right, But uh, like I was.
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: I was an independent when I first registered to vote.
- 1:05:04Speaker 3: I realized not long after that that in Iowa to
- 1:05:08Speaker 3: vote in the primary, you have to join a party.
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: It's a close it's called close. You got it, closed primary.
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: Can I swear on this program? Yeah, like, don't say
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: anything crazy campaign. I just won't swear then. No, no, you
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: swear a little bits. That's a terrible idea. This is America.
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: You're going to be like it was BS.
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I was gonna say I could have got that
- 1:05:32Speaker 3: is BS.
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: Hogwash is good.
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: Yeah, you're telling me.
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: That's the less common one for Iowa. We got a
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: lot of hogwash. We got less horse, Bucky.
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: You're telling me in America, where we celebrate Independence Day,
- 1:05:46Speaker 3: we're going to tell independent voters that they are less
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: equal and they don't get to participate in our democracy.
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: That's hogwash, right, Yeah.
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: But that's what it is.
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: We have these we have these close primaries. Guys, we
- 1:05:55Speaker 3: have two private clubs that run the United States of America.
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: That's what it is. It is absolutely wrong, and I
- 1:06:02Speaker 3: think we should change it.
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: But I did.
- 1:06:05Speaker 3: I registered as a Democrat because I think Jesus is
- 1:06:07Speaker 3: for the little guy and my perception, particular at the
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: time of the Democratic Party is that was the party
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: for the little guy. I'm trying to make it stay
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: that way. And I also remember Clinton when he was
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: president as a Democrat, balancing the budget and using the
- 1:06:19Speaker 3: surplus to in part to pay down the debt. And
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: I was like a teenager, and I just remember thinking, like, oh, thanks,
- 1:06:24Speaker 3: because I don't have to pay for all that someday,
- 1:06:26Speaker 3: you know. And those are the reasons basically that our
- 1:06:28Speaker 3: registered as a Democrat for the most part. Also, as
- 1:06:31Speaker 3: a guy that liked to hunt and fish, I was like, well,
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: they want to keep the places I like to hunt
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: and fish clean and pure. And that's good too, but
- 1:06:39Speaker 3: that doesn't change the fact that, like, why should I
- 1:06:41Speaker 3: have to join a private club to exercise my sacred
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: right to vote?
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: That's messed up. Yeah, That's one of the thing I
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: talked about very when I talk about my own politics often,
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: or I talk about sort of the politics of hunting
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: and fishing. Often describe a put it negatively, I'll say,
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: you always have to be paranoid. Yeah. To put it positively,
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: which I never do, it would be that each side
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: helps you out in some ways. That's right. But yes,
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: when it comes to environmental protections, clean air, clean water,
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: right habitat preservation, we find a lot of friends in
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: the Democratic Party. When it comes to acceptance support of
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: the culture of hunting, firearm rights, people that are kind
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: of like out there and proud of outdoor heritage, we
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: find a lot of friends in the Republican Party. But
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: at the same time, I just I don't want to
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: use the word hate. I do not like. I don't
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: like the two party system. And it's not even the
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: system that bugs me. What bugs me is the way
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: the system enforces itself. Yes, do you know what I mean?
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: The way you have to It drives people insane if
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: you don't take all your views and fit them into
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: the box.
- 1:08:10Speaker 3: Get in the box.
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: And when you see someone in the political world, when
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: you see them, it's it's painful to watch when you
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: see someone and they get to the point where they go, Man,
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: I need to start pretending I think a thing I
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: don't think, because here I am in this complex world
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: and I need to BOXI five. So it's not it's
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: not even the parties I have a problem with. It's
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: not the two party system. I have a party with
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: I have a problem with how organized, and so there's.
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: A there's a reinforcing culture around the two party system.
- 1:08:46Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, and I say that at every one of
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: my town halls, we go in hard on how broken
- 1:08:53Speaker 3: that system is because it tells us there's only two
- 1:08:56Speaker 3: ways to think to your point, Yeah, we know, that's ridiculous.
- 1:08:58Speaker 3: There's literally five people in their room. That's five ways
- 1:09:01Speaker 3: to think right now. And so we start these things out,
- 1:09:03Speaker 3: we do, you know, we say the system is broken.
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: You've all been invited here to help change it. So
- 1:09:08Speaker 3: raise your hand. If you're a Republican, we clap for
- 1:09:10Speaker 3: the Republicans who are in attendance. Raise your hand. If
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: you're an independent voter, we clap for the independent voters
- 1:09:16Speaker 3: who are in attendance. And then say, I'm all big
- 1:09:19Speaker 3: on fairness, So let's clap for the Democrats too, right,
- 1:09:22Speaker 3: And then let's prove to ourselves but also to everyone
- 1:09:26Speaker 3: else who wants us to hate each other, because then
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: we're easier to control. Let's prove to everyone that we all,
- 1:09:32Speaker 3: despite our differences, can work together. Let's sing the first
- 1:09:35Speaker 3: verse of America, the beautiful Oh yeah, and so a
- 1:09:38Speaker 3: hundred times across the state of Iowa this year. We
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: did that. I don't lead it. The point is we
- 1:09:43Speaker 3: all sing. My microphone is like, you know, down by
- 1:09:46Speaker 3: my knees, and it's a wonderful moment for people to
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: just have this. Hold on a second, that's right. We
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: can just do this differently. Yeah, And usually by the
- 1:09:58Speaker 3: time that's over, there's one person in the audience you
- 1:10:00Speaker 3: can find who's having an experience, like feeling something right.
- 1:10:05Speaker 3: That's what I want us to push towards. I mean,
- 1:10:07Speaker 3: I look at what we did, what they did in
- 1:10:09Speaker 3: the state of Iowa, and I'm like, they literally are
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: so comfortable thinking that this is going to be one
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: party control forever that they passed the law that auditors
- 1:10:18Speaker 3: around the United States of all political persuasions said will
- 1:10:21Speaker 3: increase waste found abuse because they think they own this thing.
- 1:10:25Speaker 3: You know, the two party system fundamentally is broken. And
- 1:10:30Speaker 3: you pick an issue, right, could be water quality, could
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: be Second Amendment. Part of the issues around that issue
- 1:10:36Speaker 3: are where they are, and they are the magnitude that
- 1:10:39Speaker 3: they are because the incentive in the political system is
- 1:10:42Speaker 3: for people to throw bombs at each other and have
- 1:10:44Speaker 3: a food fight instead of actually sitting down and saying, hey,
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: let's figure out how we're going to solve this problem.
- 1:10:52Speaker 3: And if you break down those special legal privileges that
- 1:10:55Speaker 3: the Democratic and the Republican parties have and you give
- 1:10:57Speaker 3: us a real market for political candidates, we'll start to
- 1:11:00Speaker 3: see changes where we are in more control. We the
- 1:11:02Speaker 3: people are in more control of the politicians rather than
- 1:11:05Speaker 3: feeling like we're sort of stuck into supporting them. Yeah,
- 1:11:08Speaker 3: that's my number one thing. Any other issue gets fixed
- 1:11:12Speaker 3: more easily when you have as system that's actually responsive
- 1:11:15Speaker 3: to the people.
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: What does it look like when you're doing this as
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: you as you campaign, I'm not I'm not even clear
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: on how you guys haven't got to the primary yet,
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: no next June. How many people are in that there's
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: a Well, we'll.
- 1:11:31Speaker 3: Find out because the the qualifying for the ballot thing
- 1:11:36Speaker 3: like filing your paperwork to get on the ballot for
- 1:11:38Speaker 3: the primary, happens in like February February March. So maximum three,
- 1:11:45Speaker 3: one of them.
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: Is maximum three.
- 1:11:47Speaker 3: Well, who have announced, oh there could be any number
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: three on the Democratic side have announced. One's a nice
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: guy named Paul that's announced for many offices. And I'm
- 1:11:56Speaker 3: not sure that he's ever collected enough signatures.
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:12:00Speaker 3: The others a lovely nady named Julie that I've known
- 1:12:03Speaker 3: for years and I think the world of and and
- 1:12:07Speaker 3: then there's me, got it.
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: Yeah, And so this all plays out in November, so
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: so primary in June and then yeah, same data as
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: the midterms for the for the the election.
- 1:12:20Speaker 3: And then on the Republican side, there's five candidates over there,
- 1:12:23Speaker 3: I think, yeah, close to five.
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: Five. Krinn sent me a thing where you draw you
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: were drawing a distinction between politics and public service. Yes,
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: what's you take on that?
- 1:12:33Speaker 3: Well, it's kind of the piece of what we're talking
- 1:12:35Speaker 3: about here, right is, you know, politics is passing a
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: law that everybody who's an expert in auditing degrees is
- 1:12:43Speaker 3: going to make it harder to find misspent money public services.
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: The six Republicans and the Iowa House that voted against that,
- 1:12:49Speaker 3: despite the fact that their party wanted them to support it.
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: Good good for the six of them. They stood up
- 1:12:54Speaker 3: to do the right thing. I'm proud of every one
- 1:12:56Speaker 3: of them. And I look at every one of them
- 1:12:58Speaker 3: and I see, you know, yeah, we can have disagreements,
- 1:13:02Speaker 3: but you showed some courage on that day.
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: Good for you.
- 1:13:06Speaker 3: Public service is John McCain taking the microphone away from
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: that woman back in the debates when she was like,
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: you know, saying what I don't remember what it was specifically,
- 1:13:17Speaker 3: but like some kind of conspiracy theory about Obama. He
- 1:13:20Speaker 3: takes a microphone, he says, ma'am, and he just sort
- 1:13:22Speaker 3: of says, he says something positive about his opponent. That's
- 1:13:24Speaker 3: public service. What you're saying is a class act man. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:13:30Speaker 3: Like that's that to me, is that's that's public service.
- 1:13:33Speaker 3: So much of the pushes around party, show me people
- 1:13:39Speaker 3: who want to do it right, you know, show me
- 1:13:42Speaker 3: people who were there not to be a Democrat or
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: a Republican, but to try to do the right thing,
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: figure out what the truth is, and then do the
- 1:13:48Speaker 3: right thing. Those are the people that I want to
- 1:13:50Speaker 3: work with. I don't care if they're Democrats or Republicans
- 1:13:54Speaker 3: or independents or whatever. I want to work with people
- 1:13:56Speaker 3: who just are focused on like I'm trying to I'm
- 1:13:59Speaker 3: trying to do this, I'm trying to be right.
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: Here's a good example.
- 1:14:03Speaker 3: I'll toot my own horn here. I got elected in
- 1:14:07Speaker 3: twenty eighteen. First decision was who am I going to
- 1:14:10Speaker 3: put into two highest positions in the Auditor's office. I
- 1:14:13Speaker 3: picked an independent and a Republican who had made campaign
- 1:14:16Speaker 3: contributions to my opponent.
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: Oh yeah, so.
- 1:14:20Speaker 3: I put them in those highest positions because I want
- 1:14:23Speaker 3: to be a state author that's serving the whole state.
- 1:14:26Speaker 3: And I want everybody to know that whether or not
- 1:14:29Speaker 3: you supported me is not the determinant of whether or
- 1:14:32Speaker 3: not I'm going to listen to you, got it, And
- 1:14:36Speaker 3: I am here to serve everybody.
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: Now, people who like politics are like, Rob, that's the
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: wrong way to do this. You're supposed to punish the
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: people to oppose you. What do you do when you're crazy?
- 1:14:46Speaker 3: And my attitude to that is like, well, I'm not
- 1:14:48Speaker 3: trying to accumulate all the power. I'm trying to just
- 1:14:52Speaker 3: do the right thing, like the concept of statesmanship, right, Like, Okay,
- 1:14:55Speaker 3: the election's over, I won mean or meaner, Too bad
- 1:14:59Speaker 3: for you, But come on board. Even a broken clock
- 1:15:02Speaker 3: is right twice a day. You can be a part
- 1:15:03Speaker 3: of this too. I want your input. Every once in
- 1:15:06Speaker 3: a while, I'm almost slightly incorrect. What's your family think about?
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: This? Is your wife sweating it?
- 1:15:15Speaker 3: If you win? You know, it's a great question. She understands,
- 1:15:21Speaker 3: she's a believer in it. She understands why it's important.
- 1:15:24Speaker 3: She thinks we need a new direction in the state
- 1:15:26Speaker 3: of Iowa. She doesn't love it. She's got her own
- 1:15:31Speaker 3: actually her she runs her family business, which actually is
- 1:15:36Speaker 3: all about improving the efficiency of the food system.
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: You appreciate it.
- 1:15:39Speaker 3: I like to describe it as using the every part
- 1:15:42Speaker 3: of the proverbial buffalo. Oh so they take materials from
- 1:15:48Speaker 3: slaughterhouses around the United States and figure out something they could.
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: Do with it. Oh really yeah, yeah, yeah, it's rendering
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: and whatnot. On one of the things they do is
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: rendering God. Yeah, no, kid, Yeah, she.
- 1:16:00Speaker 3: Works there running it and so and so, you know
- 1:16:04Speaker 3: she did.
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: Politicians always say they're going to ask their wife or whatever.
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: They're gonna talk to their wife. They're gonna ask their
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: wife her. Do you actually go do that? Do they do?
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: Do they go say like, hey, can I run for governor?
- 1:16:14Speaker 3: The distinction I would make is the people who were like,
- 1:16:16Speaker 3: we sat down with our children and had a family discussion.
- 1:16:18Speaker 3: I'm always like, really, your children, we sent our shout
- 1:16:21Speaker 3: for family discussion.
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: That's see. You guys gotta go in the other room.
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: We're gonna have a family discussion, older yours, my daughter's
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: I got a I got a ten. My daughter's thirteen
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: in a couple of days, and I got a fifteen
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: years right, Okay, so we got two boys, they're nine
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: and eleven. We have the family discussion. Then they come
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: in and we tell them what it was there, We
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: tell them what was that's a lot closer.
- 1:16:40Speaker 3: That's a lot closer, and we'll explain why this decision
- 1:16:42Speaker 3: was made.
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: Right, and my like, no, we're not going to Disneyland.
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: And there's a thousand reasons why, but the biggest one
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: is we don't like Disneyland. Our boys actually thankfully have
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: never asked to go to Disneyland. But but no, like
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: will she and I talk about this absolutely, you know,
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: that's it's a big decision. She's the same with running
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: for state auditor too, you know, lower, lower office.
- 1:17:02Speaker 3: But still a big decision. When when politicians are like
- 1:17:05Speaker 3: we sat down and we listened to our kids to
- 1:17:07Speaker 3: I'm like, really, you let a nine year old decide,
- 1:17:10Speaker 3: like what you're gonna do with your life?
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: You run for higher yeah, or any office any It's
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: like yeah, right, no, right.
- 1:17:19Speaker 3: City council. I just be like, well, my kid, my
- 1:17:23Speaker 3: kid is a child. They don't understand what this means.
- 1:17:25Speaker 3: This is a big decision and it's important. We will
- 1:17:28Speaker 3: let them know what we've decided, similar to you. Yeah,
- 1:17:31Speaker 3: and no, they're not in the room, because if they're
- 1:17:33Speaker 3: in the room when Christina and I are talking about it,
- 1:17:38Speaker 3: then they're gonna have input regardless.
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure. Man. The part about it that really
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: gets me is, uh, maybe it hasn't happened yet, but god,
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: you gotta get some thick skin man.
- 1:17:48Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: Because towards the end, dude, they get ugly. They do,
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: they do. They're gonna be like, his book wasn't that big?
- 1:17:58Speaker 4: It measured two o seven. They're like, not net, that's right,
- 1:18:05Speaker 4: that's right. He's told you it was two o nine.
- 1:18:08Speaker 4: But that's gross. And we don't mean I'm saying girls
- 1:18:15Speaker 4: score a lot of that stuff.
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: You know. I've spent seven years in courtrooms, plenty of
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: plenty of criminal defendants and defense attorneys, you know, telling
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: people wrong about this or did a terrible job on that.
- 1:18:27Speaker 3: That's okay. I've run two campaigns already. I'm accustomed to it.
- 1:18:31Speaker 3: To a certain degree. But then there's also I mean,
- 1:18:34Speaker 3: the ultimate thing to me is just the serenity prayer.
- 1:18:36Speaker 3: I can't control what other people say about me. This
- 1:18:38Speaker 3: is a great rule for my serenity prayer, you know,
- 1:18:41Speaker 3: and I'll probably screw it up, but it's something to
- 1:18:43Speaker 3: the effect of God grant me the oh, the courage
- 1:18:47Speaker 3: a change the things I can, the wisdom, no, the
- 1:18:49Speaker 3: serenity to accept the things I cannot. Know the difference, Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:18:53Speaker 3: I can't control what other people say about me. I
- 1:18:56Speaker 3: know they're gonna lie about me. They're lying about me already.
- 1:19:00Speaker 3: All I could do is live my life and make
- 1:19:03Speaker 3: my own decisions and be honest with people about what
- 1:19:05Speaker 3: I believe and what I think we need to be doing.
- 1:19:07Speaker 3: And if they pick me, great. If they don't, that's
- 1:19:10Speaker 3: the right.
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: You can be like, screw y'all, I'm going hunting. That's right.
- 1:19:14Speaker 3: There are many days where let's not even get into it.
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: So would you be able to be like would you
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: be able to be the hunting like a hunting governor?
- 1:19:24Speaker 3: I mean, I just would be so. So both of
- 1:19:27Speaker 3: my jobs as both state auditor and as a prosecutor,
- 1:19:30Speaker 3: I can find ways sitting quiet in in a tree
- 1:19:33Speaker 3: stand to be productive.
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: Back in the.
- 1:19:36Speaker 3: Day when I was prosecuting and I'd have to like
- 1:19:38Speaker 3: maybe listen to a witnesses interview, Well I'll go listen
- 1:19:42Speaker 3: with one one one ear piece in while I'm in
- 1:19:45Speaker 3: a tree stand reading. I can read audit reports while
- 1:19:48Speaker 3: I'm in a tree stand on a tablet, you know,
- 1:19:51Speaker 3: on a and that works fine. I can read them
- 1:19:54Speaker 3: print it out. So there's a there's a way to
- 1:19:57Speaker 3: balance things. It's also just a really good place to
- 1:20:00Speaker 3: do some thinking. Just you're into you're in the woods,
- 1:20:04Speaker 3: you're by yourself. No, maybe you're thirty feet from a
- 1:20:07Speaker 3: parking lot, but it's not that different.
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: What are some environmental issues that that I mean, I
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: know you're got I think so often a policy on
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: at federal level.
- 1:20:17Speaker 3: Yeah, oh sure, sure, sure.
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: Well local like I think about things in my state,
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: I think about things in Alaska a lot, and I
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: think federal. So so you're whatever you bring up, I'm
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: probably not gonna know what it is. But give me
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: an example of of a habitat issue, an environmental issue
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: that's going on where you're at, how you look at it,
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: how you talk about it to people.
- 1:20:44Speaker 3: We've got a We've got a very much a percolating
- 1:20:47Speaker 3: issue with water quality right now. We've got a water
- 1:20:50Speaker 3: quality problem in Iowa, record beach closures this summer, very
- 1:20:56Speaker 3: high nitrate levels, just egg runoff. A lot of it
- 1:20:59Speaker 3: is egg runoff, but it's not exclusively agron off. And
- 1:21:02Speaker 3: the important thing I always try to get people to
- 1:21:04Speaker 3: remember is farmers are signing up for conservation programs and
- 1:21:07Speaker 3: getting turned away because these politicians won't put in the funding.
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: And to me, that's been a huge that that's federal. Yeah,
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: that's great, that's right, and that's been a huge headache. Man. Yep.
- 1:21:20Speaker 3: So some of it's federal, some of it's not. Opening
- 1:21:23Speaker 3: it up farmers. And this is survey after survey of
- 1:21:27Speaker 3: farmers and growers and producers in the state of Iowa.
- 1:21:30Speaker 3: They care about their impact on water quality, they care
- 1:21:34Speaker 3: about their impact on the environment, They want to do better,
- 1:21:37Speaker 3: survey after survey, but nine of farm income goes to
- 1:21:41Speaker 3: the biggest ten percent of farms. A lot of farmers
- 1:21:44Speaker 3: are just scraping by, and so they're putting together a
- 1:21:46Speaker 3: plan saying, hey, I'll put my money into this plan.
- 1:21:50Speaker 3: Here's what I'm going to do on this acreage on
- 1:21:53Speaker 3: this parcel. Here's what I'm going to do over there,
- 1:21:55Speaker 3: but I'm applying for the cost share because I can't
- 1:21:58Speaker 3: do this whole thing by myself.
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: Mm.
- 1:22:00Speaker 3: And politicians aren't funding the programs enough and that of course,
- 1:22:04Speaker 3: then the farmer's like, well then I can't do that,
- 1:22:06Speaker 3: and all the rest of us are saying, well, then again,
- 1:22:09Speaker 3: we don't see the improvements in water quality because it's
- 1:22:11Speaker 3: not moving fast enough.
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: Yeah, so they don't kill the program, they just don't
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: move the money to it.
- 1:22:16Speaker 3: Right, it's still there and they can say, oh, we
- 1:22:19Speaker 3: put this much into this program this year, But what
- 1:22:21Speaker 3: they don't tell you is actually that much was applied
- 1:22:23Speaker 3: for people want to do it, and instead they run
- 1:22:27Speaker 3: around and try to divide us from each other because
- 1:22:28Speaker 3: we got this again broken two choice system where they
- 1:22:31Speaker 3: just try to say, oh, if so and so is
- 1:22:33Speaker 3: talking about water quality, that means they're anti this or
- 1:22:36Speaker 3: anti that.
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: No.
- 1:22:37Speaker 3: Actually, a lot of the people who are farming, who
- 1:22:41Speaker 3: are growing, who are producing, they too want to help
- 1:22:44Speaker 3: improve water quality. It's politicians that aren't giving them the
- 1:22:46Speaker 3: money to do it.
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: Oftentimes, so putting so acridgenda conservation programs. It could be that.
- 1:22:54Speaker 3: I mean, it could be putting in terraces, lots of
- 1:22:57Speaker 3: different practices, could like improvements, ye, provements that just help
- 1:23:00Speaker 3: water quality. I mean, maybe it's we are we are
- 1:23:03Speaker 3: forty ninth in public land Iowa is, so maybe it's
- 1:23:07Speaker 3: having more public land, but maybe it's actually just having
- 1:23:10Speaker 3: more forty ninth forty ninth I would guess that. I
- 1:23:13Speaker 3: think eighty five percent of Iowa is farmed or used
- 1:23:18Speaker 3: in some way for agricultural production. So I'd like us
- 1:23:23Speaker 3: to improve that. You got a lot of folks access issues, Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:23:27Speaker 3: Like there's a couple of there's a couple of Facebook
- 1:23:30Speaker 3: bow hunter groups that I've been active in for a
- 1:23:33Speaker 3: long time, and you always get a little bit extra credit,
- 1:23:35Speaker 3: you know, if you're out there on public land to
- 1:23:37Speaker 3: fill that tag. But we still just don't have that
- 1:23:40Speaker 3: much by comparison to every other state. Do you guys
- 1:23:43Speaker 3: have good stream access laws? If you get into a river,
- 1:23:45Speaker 3: can you can you travel and.
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: Anchor and wait?
- 1:23:48Speaker 3: Or that's actually a great question. You can travel, I
- 1:23:53Speaker 3: don't know about anchoring. You can you could wade. I
- 1:23:58Speaker 3: don't know to what degree got it, I would imagine
- 1:24:02Speaker 3: because I'm just thinking mostly about like literally the size
- 1:24:05Speaker 3: of a lot of rivers in Iowa. We got some
- 1:24:07Speaker 3: of the best trout fishing in Midwest actually up in
- 1:24:09Speaker 3: my hometown in Decora. A lot of these streams are
- 1:24:12Speaker 3: teeny tiny. I mean you're talking about like nobody was
- 1:24:16Speaker 3: a fly fisher when I was growing up in northeast Iowa.
- 1:24:19Speaker 3: Because your stream is two and a half e whide.
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: Got it.
- 1:24:23Speaker 3: So you're you're you're standing there just plinking a spinner
- 1:24:26Speaker 3: in and reeling it up, not float tripping.
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: No, no, I'm with you.
- 1:24:31Speaker 3: And so waiting is like, you know, there's not even
- 1:24:35Speaker 3: why would you The only thing I'm going to do
- 1:24:37Speaker 3: by waiting is let trout trut know that somebody is
- 1:24:39Speaker 3: in that in that stream with them.
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: That the stream access thing and the water access thing is.
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: That's not something I discussed when I was grew up
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: in Michigan, but it's a huge issue out here. Sure,
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: sure with the with the larger rivers and whether you
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: get on them. And I've been I've been vocal about
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: the corner crossing stuff too.
- 1:24:57Speaker 3: I Mean that's just that's like such a no brainer
- 1:24:59Speaker 3: to me, Like, look, no one is doing anything to
- 1:25:03Speaker 3: your property. I'm going to go from this public parcel
- 1:25:06Speaker 3: here to that one that they touch each other. I
- 1:25:10Speaker 3: can't imagine the attitude of someone who says, like, no,
- 1:25:13Speaker 3: I don't want you to do that.
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: Well, i'll tell you the court. The courts all agree
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: with you.
- 1:25:17Speaker 3: Good, but it's not it hasn't been.
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: Is it done. It's it's done that it's done in
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: that the Ninth. So it was appealed and appealed and
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: appeal the ninth Circuit Court. So the Federal ninth Federal
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: Circuit Court ruled it it's legal. They tried to appeal
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: to the Supreme Court. They wouldn't hear it. Supreme Court said,
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: feel settled us. Great, they didn't take the case it.
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: What has yet to happen is the Ninth is Wyoming
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: only cover wark. That's only good in New Mexico. But
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: if you can rely on it still yeah, but the Tenth,
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: like I guess what would happen is right now, it'll
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: take a little time to see if people corner cross
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: and what prosecutor's attitude, because theoretically a prosecutor can still
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: try to prosecute it. You could. I don't think there's
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: a prosecutor in the State of Montana that it's going
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: to take that case. I would hope not.
- 1:26:15Speaker 3: There's no way I would think you'd have more people
- 1:26:16Speaker 3: upset with you about it than you would have happy
- 1:26:18Speaker 3: with you.
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: And why would you want to invite what happened down
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: in Wyhoming.
- 1:26:21Speaker 3: Well, and then especially what you're going to end up
- 1:26:23Speaker 3: with is like, Okay, look, technically speaking, the Ninth Circuit
- 1:26:27Speaker 3: decision doesn't apply outside of the Ninth Circuit, but we
- 1:26:29Speaker 3: all know it exists. We all know the Supreme Court
- 1:26:32Speaker 3: denied certification. At your point, so are you, as the prosecutor,
- 1:26:36Speaker 3: going to put all these resources into a case that
- 1:26:38Speaker 3: you think, at the end of the day you're probably
- 1:26:41Speaker 3: going to lose.
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: Yeah. And in the case, they relied on this Unlawful
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: Enclosures Act, which is an old grazing Act Unlawful Enclosures Act, oh,
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: interest that was cited and that applies here. Yeah, that
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: applies outside of the Ninth Circuit. Yeah, So it's like
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: there's still some level of confusion. It would have been
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: kind of cool if the Supreme Court had taken it. Yeah.
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: On the other hand, the w Yeah, yeah, it could
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: have been kind of cool if if they want to
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: just making it like just absolute law the land instead
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: just the ramifications are gonna be slowed. Yeah.
- 1:27:17Speaker 3: Yeah, still though, I guess I and and and that's
- 1:27:21Speaker 3: you know, and that's the other trick too, because if
- 1:27:23Speaker 3: you're if a lot of the folks that are out
- 1:27:25Speaker 3: there hunting public land is because they don't have access
- 1:27:27Speaker 3: to private lan. Yeah, and so they're not the kind
- 1:27:29Speaker 3: of person who's like, suit me, I've got the resources
- 1:27:31Speaker 3: to fight this out.
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: Now.
- 1:27:33Speaker 3: I'm betting that there's you know, uh, hunting advocacy organizations
- 1:27:39Speaker 3: that would cover their legal expenses. But do they know
- 1:27:41Speaker 3: that when they're standing there at that corner and they
- 1:27:43Speaker 3: want to do that cross.
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: That's what happened in whom But no, they didn't know that. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: you know, we spent we spent money on it. A
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: lot of people spend money on it. Yeah.
- 1:27:50Speaker 3: I listened to the I like the nature is nonpartisan. Guy,
- 1:27:53Speaker 3: you guys had one back, Yeah, yeah. A lot of
- 1:27:57Speaker 3: stuff that he says is kind of like in in
- 1:27:59Speaker 3: the same thinking is the sort of anti two party
- 1:28:02Speaker 3: system approach, just like we need to break break down
- 1:28:06Speaker 3: the boxes, just get people to the point where you
- 1:28:08Speaker 3: are free to think the way you think, tell people
- 1:28:12Speaker 3: what you believe. The other benefit of it, too is
- 1:28:15Speaker 3: I actually think you get the politicians have more and
- 1:28:18Speaker 3: of incentive to be honest about their opponents and to
- 1:28:23Speaker 3: be truthful because if you have Alaska actually is a
- 1:28:27Speaker 3: great example of this. They have a reformed system. They
- 1:28:31Speaker 3: have a single open primary, public primary. Every candidate is
- 1:28:36Speaker 3: on it. Every voter, including the Independence can walk in.
- 1:28:39Speaker 3: You just vote for your one favorite, and they send
- 1:28:42Speaker 3: the top four or five to the general election, and
- 1:28:43Speaker 3: then they do rank choice voting. The other thing I
- 1:28:47Speaker 3: think is pretty simple is approval voting. Here are four candidates,
- 1:28:50Speaker 3: vote for as many of them as.
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: You approve of.
- 1:28:52Speaker 3: Oh and so if you and me and Karin are
- 1:28:55Speaker 3: running for office against each other and we have approval voting,
- 1:28:58Speaker 3: I'm going to inherently understan that each of you have
- 1:29:00Speaker 3: a bunch of people that really want you to win.
- 1:29:04Speaker 3: But some of those people will also support me if
- 1:29:09Speaker 3: I behave in a way that attracts their support. So
- 1:29:12Speaker 3: instead of being like krinn is the scum of the
- 1:29:14Speaker 3: yearth you know, I'm gonna be like I like Krinn
- 1:29:16Speaker 3: all but deserves to die.
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: That's right, yes, right, But I don't want to take
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: it too far.
- 1:29:21Speaker 3: She's out to destroy your way of life. You know,
- 1:29:24Speaker 3: if instead I highlight areas of agreement, if I tell you,
- 1:29:28Speaker 3: you know, like I, Oh, we've texted for years, it
- 1:29:31Speaker 3: was so fun to actually, you know, if I say
- 1:29:33Speaker 3: positive things about somebody instead of running them into the ground,
- 1:29:37Speaker 3: then more of your supporters will also support me. And
- 1:29:41Speaker 3: maybe it's only thirty percent, but if I can get
- 1:29:43Speaker 3: thirty percent of your supporters to also back me instead
- 1:29:45Speaker 3: of five percent, that helps me win. So we could
- 1:29:48Speaker 3: have a system. It actually incentivizes civility honesty, right, because
- 1:29:53Speaker 3: if I'm lying, all your supporters can be like, that's
- 1:29:56Speaker 3: a lie. He's terrible. I don't approve of him. Break
- 1:30:00Speaker 3: down these walls, make politicians behave like normal people. Do that,
- 1:30:06Speaker 3: and we can start really solving a lot of problems.
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: After I've been more careful about this. But after Charlie
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: kirk Kirk was killed, I started being like, now if
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: I'm saying something, if I'm talking about a politician, I'll
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: be like, man, he loves his country, he loves his family.
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: I don't agree with him about Buffalo it is.
- 1:30:33Speaker 5: I think that's like I don't see how the eye
- 1:30:35Speaker 5: on that. But let's just clarify that's right. I think
- 1:30:37Speaker 5: that's loves America. I think that's a step in the
- 1:30:39Speaker 5: right direction. But you don't see people do it very often.
- 1:30:43Speaker 5: And this is you know what's funny too, is like
- 1:30:46Speaker 5: if I mentioned those those bow hunting Facebook groups I'm in,
- 1:30:50Speaker 5: they're like the two most supportive Facebook groups I've ever seen,
- 1:30:55Speaker 5: just people being like, good for you.
- 1:30:57Speaker 3: You know, someone to put a post up right then,
- 1:30:59Speaker 3: and it'll be someone who like, man, I've been hunting
- 1:31:01Speaker 3: for three years. I finally got my first deer. It'll
- 1:31:04Speaker 3: be a Spike book then, like every single every single
- 1:31:07Speaker 3: comment and maybe this is an Iowa thing that they
- 1:31:10Speaker 3: don't want.
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: They don't feel the need to tear them down.
- 1:31:12Speaker 3: No, everyone's like, dude, way to go, way to be persistent,
- 1:31:15Speaker 3: good for you. Like ordinary people we live in a world.
- 1:31:20Speaker 3: Part of human nature is working together, supporting each other.
- 1:31:26Speaker 3: And you look at the comments on these posts and
- 1:31:29Speaker 3: these Facebook groups for hunting, and everybody is in there.
- 1:31:31Speaker 3: They're not being like I would have shot that out
- 1:31:33Speaker 3: of giving them four years to a t. They're all
- 1:31:36Speaker 3: just like, way to go.
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: Shoot. What makes you proud?
- 1:31:39Speaker 3: If you're happy with that book.
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: We love that book. Way to go, good for you.
- 1:31:42Speaker 3: I was actually I just I just saw this article
- 1:31:44Speaker 3: about they just did I can't remember if it's like
- 1:31:47Speaker 3: light ar, but somebody up in the Andes found funnels.
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: Yeah did you see those? About that? Oh? They found
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: them under lake? Erie? Yeah?
- 1:31:56Speaker 3: Oh no, way, all right, So we're talking like tens
- 1:31:59Speaker 3: of thousands of years ago human beings are building funnels
- 1:32:02Speaker 3: two Hunt, I think I said, Eerie.
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: I think I said, Erie, you're supposed to stay here
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: on but please continue? All right, all right? One of
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: them you're a Michigan, one of them. Yeah right, I'm like,
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: I'm like, I know which one Michigan is.
- 1:32:15Speaker 3: Uh. But that's human history, that's human nature. People tens
- 1:32:20Speaker 3: of thousands of years ago building walls together to help
- 1:32:23Speaker 3: funnel animals into the right and easiest place to kill them.
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: Right before I did my buffalo Hunt read American Buffalo.
- 1:32:29Speaker 3: Love reading that book. Oh like you, But that was
- 1:32:32Speaker 3: so fun learning about because a lot of us I
- 1:32:34Speaker 3: didn't know, you know, pointing them to the now and now.
- 1:32:38Speaker 3: Of course I'm blanking on it, you know, getting them
- 1:32:40Speaker 3: to the hill where there's the drop on the other side,
- 1:32:42Speaker 3: the jump side. Yeah, but they're working together right to
- 1:32:44Speaker 3: make the job easier for everybody later on. But yet
- 1:32:47Speaker 3: here we are with this political system that incentivizes anger
- 1:32:50Speaker 3: and division and hatred and lying we're so much better
- 1:32:54Speaker 3: than it.
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: It's a mess. How It's gonna be hard for you
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: to answer, honestly. There's a there's a piece of marital advice. Yanni,
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: my buddy Yanni introduced me to it. Let's say you're
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: fighting with your wife, yeah, and then you realize you're
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: fighting about something you don't really care about. So what
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: they'll do is the say me and crann are having
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: a big fight about where this microphone would be, and
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: I realized at some point I'm arguing, like hell, but
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: I's just like, I honestly don't It doesn't really but
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: I'm just here. Why am I arguing? I'm just here arguing, Yeah,
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: And I love my argument, And I would wind up
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: saying it's a three out of ten for me. I
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: love that it's a three out of ten, right, And
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: Krin's like, well it's a ten, yeah, and you're ten
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: on that microphone. And I'm like, okay, that is a
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: great idea, Right, I'm gonna try to put that into practice. Yeah,
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: but you gotta be honest. But that's not the thing.
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: You got to be honest about shits. No, no, if
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: you set yourself like you put all this time, eighteen
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: months and all that. Yeah, how much do you get
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: in your head? How much do you get in your
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: head about what if you fail?
- 1:34:16Speaker 3: Not very much. I just work the hardest I can
- 1:34:19Speaker 3: every day against serenity, prayer. Yeah, you know, what if
- 1:34:23Speaker 3: I fail?
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:34:23Speaker 3: I'll think about that if I fail.
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: I've never been able to sit around being all depressed
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: about that idea.
- 1:34:28Speaker 3: I've never been a big anticipator, got it. You know,
- 1:34:30Speaker 3: like there's people who like, what's it going to be
- 1:34:33Speaker 3: like when I this?
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: When I that?
- 1:34:35Speaker 3: For for big things and for little things.
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:34:38Speaker 3: I'll find out when I get there. So this this
- 1:34:41Speaker 3: buck for two minutes into honey light when I saw him.
- 1:34:45Speaker 3: I typically do not get buck fever. I've taken I
- 1:34:50Speaker 3: want to say, eight popen young bucks. It's funny because
- 1:34:53Speaker 3: I capped out. I've got three between in the one
- 1:34:56Speaker 3: four four in the one fifties, like one fifty three
- 1:34:59Speaker 3: to one fifty nine. I've been stuck for years right,
- 1:35:03Speaker 3: But every one of those bucks I've never gotten. Really
- 1:35:07Speaker 3: the shakes. Okay, this buck I did. I wasn't thinking like,
- 1:35:11Speaker 3: oh I wonder if I'll get buck fever. Finally when
- 1:35:14Speaker 3: this buck shows up, it just happened. And then again
- 1:35:17Speaker 3: the second time when I'm putting up the tree stand,
- 1:35:20Speaker 3: it just happened. Third time, world around, cool as a cucumber,
- 1:35:23Speaker 3: got it. But I've just never been someone who's like, well,
- 1:35:25Speaker 3: what if I this, or what if I that life's
- 1:35:28Speaker 3: gonna happen By the time I get there, I'll figure
- 1:35:30Speaker 3: it out. What I can do right now today is
- 1:35:33Speaker 3: put all of my effort into making sure the outcome
- 1:35:35Speaker 3: that I want is the outcome that happens.
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: Got it? Yeah? Well, man, I hope that you come
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: out of this whatever happens. Yeah, I hope you come
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: out of this with the same spirit that you have now.
- 1:35:50Speaker 3: I appreciate that. I hope I do too.
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: I hate to see something bad happen. Yeah, I'm gonna
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: sit there watching now. On election night, I'm gonna be watching.
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: All right. All right, Well, we're freeling pretty good. The
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: only the only pole we've seen has us up by two.
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: But those aren't worth a whole lot. A lot's going
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: to happen between now and a year from nowns Man,
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: So we'll see where it goes up. By two in
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: the primary. No, no, in the they test.
- 1:36:15Speaker 3: This is a poll that tested me versus sort of
- 1:36:17Speaker 3: a Republican front runner or perceived front runner. Who knows
- 1:36:20Speaker 3: who it is at the end of the day. So
- 1:36:23Speaker 3: but that's, you know, worth a little bit more than
- 1:36:25Speaker 3: the paper it's printed on. At this point, we're happy
- 1:36:27Speaker 3: to see it. We're not surprised to see it. We're
- 1:36:29Speaker 3: just going to keep working hard every day. Are your
- 1:36:31Speaker 3: campaign sign is going to be your buck photo? Actually
- 1:36:34Speaker 3: I should send you, I should send you.
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: And it's like a griff and grin I used to do.
- 1:36:40Speaker 3: I used to do parades and I'd have my shoulder
- 1:36:45Speaker 3: mounts hanging off the side of my truck and my
- 1:36:48Speaker 3: and my my my sign would say Rob Sand for
- 1:36:53Speaker 3: State auditor bow hunter or no, it was like Rob
- 1:36:56Speaker 3: Sand bow hunter and state auditor. He'll find our buck.
- 1:37:01Speaker 3: That's good, it's fun. It's fun. I love every every
- 1:37:06Speaker 3: every campaign cycle. We've always had funny ads like making
- 1:37:09Speaker 3: fun of me. Big target. You know, you don't need
- 1:37:11Speaker 3: to be proficient for that one big target. But if
- 1:37:14Speaker 3: I can make people laugh, whether it's on a parade
- 1:37:17Speaker 3: or it's a TV commercial, like that public service you
- 1:37:19Speaker 3: asked about, public service, Like that is a public service.
- 1:37:22Speaker 3: We are living in very strange, oftentimes dark times. If
- 1:37:27Speaker 3: I can give you an opportunity to put a smile
- 1:37:29Speaker 3: on your face, like I have done a good thing,
- 1:37:31Speaker 3: that's good to Yeah. So yeah, we've we'll probably do
- 1:37:35Speaker 3: I don't know if we'll do something. We haven't really
- 1:37:37Speaker 3: talked about it, but we've done it in the past.
- 1:37:38Speaker 3: The TV ads haven't been hunting oriented, but the parade
- 1:37:41Speaker 3: floats have been.
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: I should probably ask you a couple of technical hunting questions. Sure,
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: when you're hunting those tight confines mm hm, and you
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: just can't have one running off you shoot mechanicals? Oh boy,
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: do we have this?
- 1:37:56Speaker 3: I got a long end.
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: I don't want to hit you with contentious No. No,
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: I don't want to you with like the gotcha stuff.
- 1:38:01Speaker 3: I got a long answer to this one. So I
- 1:38:04Speaker 3: used to shoot fixed blade. You got to take your
- 1:38:06Speaker 3: shirt off of thistle warm here, a little warmon here.
- 1:38:10Speaker 3: I used to shoot fixed blade.
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: Okay, then I saw this study from what is it
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: Quality Deer Management Association QDMA good, and.
- 1:38:22Speaker 3: Again like I'm a numbers guy. My in college, my
- 1:38:25Speaker 3: honors thesis was a statistical analysis on a data set
- 1:38:30Speaker 3: that I built with over forty thousand data points in it.
- 1:38:33Speaker 3: And so they're this cute. I think it was QDMA,
- 1:38:35Speaker 3: but it was out there on the internet. And they
- 1:38:37Speaker 3: did this study in a permit only hunting environment, I
- 1:38:40Speaker 3: think on a maybe on a military base. I'm pretty
- 1:38:42Speaker 3: sure it was in Maryland, and they found that mechanicals
- 1:38:46Speaker 3: gave you. Mechanicals gave you a higher recovery rate.
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: Got it.
- 1:38:50Speaker 3: That was all I needed. Again, like I'm I'm I
- 1:38:53Speaker 3: like truth. I like numbers, and even though I've been
- 1:38:56Speaker 3: shooting fixed blades, I read that, I'm like, all right,
- 1:38:58Speaker 3: now I'm shooting mechanicals. I switched to mechanicals, I think
- 1:39:02Speaker 3: at the same time I switched to the deep six,
- 1:39:04Speaker 3: like the micro diameter arrows, and so I got these ones.
- 1:39:08Speaker 3: I'm not going to get into brands, but yeah.
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: Because you lose all the voters, you know, I don't
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: shoot the other brand. I was into that sand guy.
- 1:39:19Speaker 4: And then he said he shoots rages, and now I
- 1:39:21Speaker 4: think he sucks.
- 1:39:22Speaker 3: I was gonna, ho there you go. I just don't
- 1:39:27Speaker 3: want to. It's less about that I didn't. I was
- 1:39:31Speaker 3: not satisfied with the performance. I switched back to the
- 1:39:35Speaker 3: same fix that I was using, just I knew they
- 1:39:38Speaker 3: were reliable.
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: I liked him.
- 1:39:41Speaker 3: But then when I travel on the state, there's a
- 1:39:43Speaker 3: few hunting archery shops. I'll go into one of them's
- 1:39:46Speaker 3: in El cater Iowa. The guy that owns this guy
- 1:39:47Speaker 3: named Dave, got.
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: To know him.
- 1:39:49Speaker 3: You know, I'll pop in, might only be once a year,
- 1:39:51Speaker 3: but pop in to say, IH to Dave, see what
- 1:39:53Speaker 3: he's got.
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: What he's got, and he gave me.
- 1:39:56Speaker 3: He was like, you got to shoot these because I
- 1:39:58Speaker 3: was telling him, you know, like I switched to mecanic
- 1:40:00Speaker 3: because I saw this study that says you get a
- 1:40:01Speaker 3: better recovery rate. But it's been really frustrating. I switched
- 1:40:05Speaker 3: to a two blade. I think the two blade if
- 1:40:07Speaker 3: you hit it, if your blades are not vertical, and
- 1:40:09Speaker 3: let's say you shoot quarter in a way right, Let's
- 1:40:11Speaker 3: say your blades are like this, You're going to hit
- 1:40:14Speaker 3: that deer and one is going to flip out and
- 1:40:17Speaker 3: the other one's not, and so all of the trajectory
- 1:40:20Speaker 3: and the energy of your arrow is going to twist.
- 1:40:22Speaker 3: Probably it's just not going to get you the pass
- 1:40:24Speaker 3: through that you want, and maybe that was the issue.
- 1:40:28Speaker 3: But regardless of what the issue is, Dave was like,
- 1:40:30Speaker 3: you got to shoot these, and he hands me a pack.
- 1:40:33Speaker 3: You want, we can talk brands, grim reapers. It's a
- 1:40:37Speaker 3: four blade mechanical and four blade mechanics, four blade mechanical,
- 1:40:41Speaker 3: so it's just you know, there's one that comes out
- 1:40:45Speaker 3: on each no collar on it, so it's like nothing
- 1:40:48Speaker 3: to mess around with. The ones I had had callers
- 1:40:50Speaker 3: on them, and I didn't buy him the first year
- 1:40:54Speaker 3: that he recommended him. I'm typically just like taking information right,
- 1:40:59Speaker 3: but eventually I just to buy him. Man, that's all
- 1:41:02Speaker 3: I'm shooting.
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: Now. That's a shot two o nine. That's what I shot,
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: the two and nine, two nine, that's what you shot
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: two O nine. I like the two on nine, So
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: like the four O nine beach Boy nine.
- 1:41:12Speaker 3: I should rewrite my four o nine. Thank you.
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: There we go. We're going to rewrite it my two
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: o nine. The problem name in bucks actual names. Yeah,
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: there's a story where there's two stories. Mark Kenyon had
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: a buck named Frank and he called someone and said,
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: I shot Frank No, and people can take that wrong way.
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: And Jeff Foxforthy has that story where he had a
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: buck named a person's name and he told his wife,
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: I shot I shot Dame, not who's dad from? Why
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: did you do that?
- 1:41:47Speaker 3: Do I need to pack you a bag?
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: Where are you right now? But yeah, I shot the
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: two O nine. I'm like, that sounds like a that's
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: a buck. Yeah, little split time, that's our drop point.
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: That's nine, that's right. Uh so yeah, I switched to
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: these grim Reapers.
- 1:42:03Speaker 3: Every single shot now just max forty yards and drop
- 1:42:08Speaker 3: hm big exit.
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: I'll check it out. They're pretty good. I like to
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: argue about this with Tony Peterson. All right, yeah you don't,
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: I mean no, but all right, I think it's an
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: interesting conversation. It's one of the more interesting ones I
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: think that there is in archery right now. Yeah, for
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: a while, I quit. I tried to. For there's a
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: couple of years when I tried to not argue about gear.
- 1:42:34Speaker 3: That's just like not possible.
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: I know, especially for you.
- 1:42:37Speaker 3: I might be able to get away with it.
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: You know. Those guys that do that, they're like, uh,
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: they'll say, well works for me. Yeah, like no, mony
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: like I could say to you, study after study after study,
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: right has shown that, well, that's what works for me. Right,
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: and it just shuts It's just shooting.
- 1:42:54Speaker 3: I'm shooting field points that works.
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: It works for me. Yeah, and it just shuts everything down.
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: So instead of arguing about gear, because I'll say, you know,
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: of course my boots are the best. Yeah, you know,
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: my headlamp is the best. My buddy recently observed you
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: always have the best headlamp, but you always have a
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: different headlamp.
- 1:43:14Speaker 3: That's a great point. That is such a good point.
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: That's frustrating, the one that you had a week ago
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: that was the best.
- 1:43:22Speaker 3: I'm picturing that Onion headline right now, World's worst person
- 1:43:25Speaker 3: just made an amazing point. Right, It's like, ah, you're right.
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: So I tried to quit. I'm back in though now. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: I'll argue about it, but I seriously I wish you
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: good luck, Thank you.
- 1:43:36Speaker 3: I appreciate that.
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I like, I like I want to I like
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: talking to people in the political space who don't want
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: to burn everything down.
- 1:43:46Speaker 3: Yeah, but you know, there's a great, a great line.
- 1:43:49Speaker 3: I'm trying to remember who said it, and I can't.
- 1:43:51Speaker 3: But any old meal can kick a barn down. Takes
- 1:43:55Speaker 3: a carpenter to build one. Yeah, we got a lot
- 1:43:58Speaker 3: of building to do.
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: Yeah we do. Yeah, glue and stuff back together. Amen. Yeah.
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: I hope you whatever happens in your campaign, you your opponents,
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: I hope you do that, and I wish you lucky
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: out on that night.
- 1:44:11Speaker 3: I'm gonna be watching, all right.
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: I appreciate that if we hear about Iowa all the time,
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: because you guys vote real early, and that's right, that's right,
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: it'll be easy track all Rob saying, Iowa, Iowa's state auditor.
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: You got it running for the position of governor.
- 1:44:29Speaker 3: And chief white tail bow hunter.
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: If you're in Des Moines and you don't like hunting
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: and you see a very large buck and you're in
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: town there, call Rob. That's right, don't call anybody else.
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: Please send photo of buck. Will provide venison. Thank you
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: very much.
- 1:44:55Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, thanks,
