- 0:26SPEAKER_05: Hello guys.
- 0:28SPEAKER_06: Hi.
- 0:30SPEAKER_06: Hello.
- 0:32SPEAKER_06: Welcome to our show.
- 0:34SPEAKER_06: That's still pretty loud, isn't it?
- 0:36SPEAKER_08: I'm gonna turn both of us down just a little bit.
- 0:40SPEAKER_06: Is that better?
- 0:41SPEAKER_06: Uh that's better.
- 0:43SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 0:43SPEAKER_06: If you say so.
- 0:44SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 0:44SPEAKER_08: Hey, it's uh the O'Brien and Doug show.
- 0:47SPEAKER_08: Is it?
- 0:47SPEAKER_08: The O'Brien and Doug podcast.
- 0:49SPEAKER_08: Well, I guess it's a show.
- 0:50SPEAKER_07: It's a show and a podcast.
- 0:51SPEAKER_07: It's a show and a podcast.
- 0:52SPEAKER_07: It's a podcast.
- 0:53SPEAKER_07: It's a show.
- 0:53SPEAKER_07: It's a pod show.
- 0:54SPEAKER_07: It's a showy podcast.
- 0:56SPEAKER_07: It's a showcast.
- 0:57SPEAKER_07: So he's Doug.
- 0:58SPEAKER_06: He's Brian.
- 1:00SPEAKER_06: And O'Brien.
- 1:02SPEAKER_08: O'Brien.
- 1:03SPEAKER_08: O'Brien.
- 1:05SPEAKER_08: Um, and it's episode 209.
- 1:08SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 1:09SPEAKER_08: Um, first things first, before we get going, I think we should recognize this.
- 1:18SPEAKER_08: Today is we're recording this on Tuesday, August 27th.
- 1:23SPEAKER_08: Which on this day in 1990.
- 1:26SPEAKER_08: 90, right?
- 1:27SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:27SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:28SPEAKER_08: Uh we lost a legendary guitar player.
- 1:32SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 1:33SPEAKER_08: Uh unmatched as far as I'm concerned.
- 1:35SPEAKER_06: Oh, there hasn't been one since.
- 1:37SPEAKER_08: No.
- 1:37SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:37SPEAKER_08: I mean, there's a lot of people that can sound like this TV Ray.
- 1:42SPEAKER_08: But obviously there's only one.
- 1:44SPEAKER_06: There's all there's only ever Stevie Ray ball.
- 1:47SPEAKER_08: Uh died in a helicopter crash.
- 1:49SPEAKER_08: Um, Eric Clapton said it best.
- 2:08SPEAKER_08: There's an interview I remember seeing, you probably saw it too, where he said.
- 2:15SPEAKER_08: He never seemed to run out of ideas.
- 2:18SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 2:19SPEAKER_08: It was like a channel, it was like an open channel.
- 2:22SPEAKER_08: And even Cla Clapton said that he struggles with, you know, like as he's playing, what he's gonna play next.
- 2:29SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 2:30SPEAKER_08: Um, but it was almost like Stevie Ray was just a a channel.
- 2:36SPEAKER_08: It was it was non- He didn't have to think about it.
- 2:38SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:39SPEAKER_06: That's the thing about Clapton, though.
- 2:41SPEAKER_06: He because he when he first saw uh Jimi Hendrix play, right?
- 2:45SPEAKER_06: He was like, oh, we're all in trouble.
- 2:47SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 2:47SPEAKER_06: You know what I mean?
- 2:48SPEAKER_06: You know, because he was like, this guy is on a different level than the rest of us.
- 2:51SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 2:51SPEAKER_06: So, you know, he's always been, you know, he's you know, he's a great talent in himself, but he recognizes he champions other people, yeah.
- 2:58SPEAKER_08: And he said, I think he said the first time he heard Stevie Ray was on the radio, and he had to pull his go over his guitar.
- 3:06SPEAKER_08: Oh, over his guitar, yeah.
- 3:07SPEAKER_08: He had to pull over his car.
- 3:08SPEAKER_06: Was he riding his guitar?
- 3:10SPEAKER_06: Wow, that's pretty neat.
- 3:11SPEAKER_08: He had to pull over his car, and he said before the end of the day I have to find out who that guitar player is.
- 3:16SPEAKER_08: And he did, obviously.
- 3:17SPEAKER_08: Of course, he shared the bill with Stevie Ray several times, yeah.
- 3:21SPEAKER_08: Including that fateful night.
- 3:23SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 3:23SPEAKER_08: That um I was about to say Clapton was headlining, wasn't he?
- 3:26SPEAKER_08: He was.
- 3:26SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 3:27SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 3:27SPEAKER_08: Um, and I guess it was an amazing show.
- 3:29SPEAKER_08: I haven't seen it.
- 3:30SPEAKER_08: Is that available anywhere?
- 3:31SPEAKER_06: I I seriously doubt it.
- 3:34SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 3:34SPEAKER_06: Because I I don't know.
- 3:36SPEAKER_06: I mean it should be, but I I doubt it because everybody's just gonna watch it going, uh.
- 3:40SPEAKER_07: Oh, accidentally this one.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Can it turn roll down the street?
- 3:53SPEAKER_08: And just so you know, um we're gonna feature Stevie Ray on the Wall of Tunes.
- 3:58SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 3:59SPEAKER_08: We're not gonna, we're not gonna, I mean, we'll I guess we'll pretend to climb the Wall of Tunes, but we're we're gonna do as a tribute to uh to Stevie Ray today.
- 4:06SPEAKER_08: Correct.
- 4:07SPEAKER_08: So I'm not sure what album we're gonna pick.
- 4:09SPEAKER_06: Doesn't matter.
- 4:10SPEAKER_07: They're all great.
- 4:10SPEAKER_07: They're all great.
- 4:11SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 4:19SPEAKER_08: It amazes me too the the the size of strings that he played.
- 4:23SPEAKER_08: Oh, they were like 13 or 14.
- 4:26SPEAKER_06: Yeah, they were huge.
- 4:26SPEAKER_06: They were like, you know, you know those cables you see on bridges right in about that size.
- 4:31SPEAKER_08: So his fingers must have bled a lot.
- 4:34SPEAKER_06: Well that I bet they were just like hard as rock.
- 4:37SPEAKER_08: Oh yeah.
- 4:38SPEAKER_06: You know, callused.
- 4:38SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 4:39SPEAKER_06: I bet they I bet it I bet you could like stick a knife into his finger and it wouldn't even go in.
- 4:45SPEAKER_06: I bet you're right.
- 4:47SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 4:47SPEAKER_08: I play tens and my my tips, the tips of my fingers.
- 4:51SPEAKER_08: And but when they say tens and fourteens, it's it's the thickness of the guitar string.
- 4:55SPEAKER_08: It's the gauge.
- 4:56SPEAKER_08: It's the gauge.
- 4:56SPEAKER_08: And so so a thinner string is easier to play.
- 5:00SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 5:01SPEAKER_08: And like a lot of those, um a lot of the shred guys, a lot of the guys that do the tapping and all that stuff, they play really thin strings.
- 5:09SPEAKER_08: Typically, right.
- 5:09SPEAKER_08: They play really thin strings because they're easier on their fingers and they're easier to play, and you only have to touch them just like you know, a little bit.
- 5:17SPEAKER_06: Well, it's good for it's good for fast playing.
- 5:19SPEAKER_08: Exactly.
- 5:20SPEAKER_08: Exactly.
- 5:20SPEAKER_08: And so the thicker the string, the better the tone, uh, but it's harder to play, especially bending them like this.
- 5:29SPEAKER_08: Oh yeah.
- 5:36SPEAKER_08: Yeah, we'll we'll talk about it a little bit later.
- 5:38SPEAKER_08: I mean, the he got a lot of his playing from Albert King and Freddie King.
- 5:41SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 5:42SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 5:46SPEAKER_08: So yeah, that's the first thing.
- 5:48SPEAKER_08: So uh rest in peace, TV Ray Vaughn.
- 5:50SPEAKER_08: Uh, how many years is it?
- 5:51SPEAKER_08: 34.
- 5:51SPEAKER_08: 34.
- 5:52SPEAKER_08: Well, he was 35 years old when he died.
- 5:54SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 5:54SPEAKER_08: So he'd been he would have been 69?
- 5:58SPEAKER_08: Something like that, yeah.
- 5:59SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 5:59SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 5:59SPEAKER_08: Unbelievable.
- 6:00SPEAKER_08: He would have still been killing it.
- 6:02SPEAKER_08: Oh yeah.
- 6:02SPEAKER_08: Still be killing it.
- 6:03SPEAKER_08: Oh yeah.
- 6:04SPEAKER_08: Well look at Buddy Guy.
- 6:05SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 6:05SPEAKER_08: I mean, Buddy Guy's still touring and stuff like that.
- 6:07SPEAKER_08: He's he's yeah.
- 6:09SPEAKER_06: I mean, BB King toured into his 80s.
- 6:11SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 6:12SPEAKER_06: So I mean, you know, come on.
- 6:13SPEAKER_06: He would he would have still been out there.
- 6:14SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 6:15SPEAKER_08: Oh yeah, for sure.
- 6:16SPEAKER_08: So we'll play some more Stevie Ray as the uh podcast rolls on, um, especially in the um Wall of Tunes.
- 6:23SPEAKER_08: Um Fantasy Football getting going.
- 6:25SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 6:25SPEAKER_08: I'm excited.
- 6:26SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 6:26SPEAKER_06: So you said I haven't heard from uh the only people that I know are actually playing are you, me, and cousin Larry.
- 6:32SPEAKER_08: Okay, so Bob.
- 6:33SPEAKER_08: So yeah, well, here's the thing.
- 6:34SPEAKER_08: So I just got this from Bob just as we were talking.
- 6:36SPEAKER_08: Oh, okay.
- 6:37SPEAKER_08: So let me clarify because all good in my family.
- 6:42SPEAKER_08: Quinn will play, and Noah is back in.
- 6:44SPEAKER_08: Okay, good.
- 6:44SPEAKER_08: Okay, so we got we got Quinn, Noah, and Bob.
- 6:46SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 6:47SPEAKER_08: You and me, cousin Larry.
- 6:49SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 6:49SPEAKER_08: So I haven't heard we haven't heard from Joko.
- 6:51SPEAKER_06: Joko, Shane, which I doubt we're gonna hear from Joko.
- 6:54SPEAKER_08: Um I'm sure Eli and Finn will be.
- 6:57SPEAKER_08: Eli and Finn.
- 6:58SPEAKER_08: Is that enough?
- 6:58SPEAKER_08: And Jude?
- 6:59SPEAKER_06: Eli Finn and Jude.
- 7:00SPEAKER_06: Is Jude playing?
- 7:01SPEAKER_06: I don't know.
- 7:02SPEAKER_06: Because I, you know, it's tradition to get our butts kicked by Jude.
- 7:05SPEAKER_06: It is.
- 7:06SPEAKER_06: So, you know.
- 7:07SPEAKER_08: So how many's that?
- 7:08SPEAKER_08: Uh well, hold on.
- 7:09SPEAKER_08: So so so Quinn, Noah, Bob, you meet, Cousin Larry, Eli and Finn, and what would be Jude and Shane?
- 7:21SPEAKER_08: No and Joko.
- 7:22SPEAKER_08: So that's eleven.
- 7:23SPEAKER_06: That's eleven.
- 7:24SPEAKER_06: Okay, so I'm gonna have to expand the league to 12 teams.
- 7:26SPEAKER_08: Well, if they if they uh you know what I'll send them, I'll send a message right now.
- 7:30SPEAKER_06: Yeah, because I I gotta know how many because we have to have even numbers.
- 7:34SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 7:34SPEAKER_08: Yeah, so let me just uh let's see.
- 7:39SPEAKER_08: Finn doesn't have his phone right now because Eli is at practice and he left his phone in his truck, but I'm gonna I'm gonna do uh message Jude right now.
- 7:47SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 7:47SPEAKER_08: Are you doing fantasy with us at this year?
- 7:55SPEAKER_06: Well cousin cousin Larry's gonna be playing in his work league and with us, so.
- 8:00SPEAKER_08: Uh well I think Eli does a league with his friends too.
- 8:03SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 8:03SPEAKER_06: Um which is good, I'm glad.
- 8:06SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 8:06SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 8:07SPEAKER_08: So I'll see maybe maybe Jude will answer me during the podcast.
- 8:11SPEAKER_06: So I figure we'll uh draft on Sunday.
- 8:14SPEAKER_08: This Sunday?
- 8:14SPEAKER_06: Yeah, this time because the game because the season starts the fifth.
- 8:18SPEAKER_06: So that's cool.
- 8:19SPEAKER_06: Might as well draft on Sunday.
- 8:20SPEAKER_06: That way everybody's sure ready to go.
- 8:23SPEAKER_06: Works for me.
- 8:23SPEAKER_06: We can make trades and whatever.
- 8:26SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 8:26SPEAKER_06: Because I know Jude will trade with somebody.
- 8:28SPEAKER_06: I'm sure he will.
- 8:29SPEAKER_06: He always does.
- 8:29SPEAKER_06: He always does.
- 8:30SPEAKER_08: He's he's one you don't want to mess with.
- 8:32SPEAKER_08: He's savvy.
- 8:33SPEAKER_08: He knows what he's doing.
- 8:34SPEAKER_06: Yeah, he's savvy.
- 8:34SPEAKER_08: Yeah, he knows what he's doing.
- 8:35SPEAKER_06: That's why he keeps winning.
- 8:36SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 8:37SPEAKER_06: So how many years in a row is it?
- 8:39SPEAKER_06: Three, four, something like that.
- 8:40SPEAKER_06: Ever since he's been playing.
- 8:41SPEAKER_06: I think every ever since he got into the league, he's won every year.
- 8:44SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 8:44SPEAKER_08: So the other thing was We had gigs.
- 8:51SPEAKER_08: We did have gigs.
- 8:52SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 8:52SPEAKER_06: And they were, for the most part, pretty good.
- 8:54SPEAKER_06: I mean, well, the Skinny Elvis gig was pretty great.
- 8:57SPEAKER_08: Yeah, that's right.
- 8:57SPEAKER_08: So it was our first show with Skinny Elvis.
- 9:00SPEAKER_08: It was our nine so that's our 90s rock band.
- 9:02SPEAKER_08: And I was a little worried when people started showing up and they were all kind of white-haired people look uh expecting the Star City Syndicate.
- 9:09SPEAKER_06: I was laughing on the inside because I was like, two songs, they're out of here.
- 9:14SPEAKER_08: And it you weren't wrong.
- 9:15SPEAKER_08: I wasn't wrong, some of them were like, some of them haven't left.
- 9:17SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 9:17SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 9:18SPEAKER_08: Um and it was in a metal building because it was raining out.
- 9:20SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 9:21SPEAKER_08: Uh, which is rough.
- 9:22SPEAKER_08: Um, but we had fun.
- 9:24SPEAKER_08: Oh, we had last.
- 9:25SPEAKER_08: Yeah, we had we had we had a good time.
- 9:26SPEAKER_08: And then the the the guy that was running the beer gardens, I don't know if we can say the name of the company, I'm not sure if we can say that or not, but but a big company that he owns a brewery in Bangor, he's like, I want to hire you guys.
- 9:39SPEAKER_06: After our first gig, that's pretty cool.
- 9:40SPEAKER_06: Wow, that's cool.
- 9:41SPEAKER_06: But I let's see if it actually.
- 9:44SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I know, I know.
- 9:44SPEAKER_06: I doubt a little bit of comments.
- 9:46SPEAKER_06: We how many times have we played a gig and people have been like, Oh yeah, we want you to play here and we never hear from them again.
- 9:52SPEAKER_06: We never hear from them again.
- 9:53SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 9:53SPEAKER_06: So it's like, you know, we'll wait, wait and see.
- 9:56SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 9:56SPEAKER_06: If it if it does, if it comes through, awesome.
- 9:58SPEAKER_06: If not, yeah, right.
- 9:59SPEAKER_06: We're not out at anything.
- 10:00SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 10:01SPEAKER_06: But it was really nice to see uh syndicate members show up.
- 10:04SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 10:04SPEAKER_06: Like, you know, OJ and Kelly and Sarah and Pat all showed up.
- 10:09SPEAKER_06: Oh yeah.
- 10:09SPEAKER_06: And uh and Melissa.
- 10:10SPEAKER_08: Yeah, you know, and they dig they they dug it too.
- 10:13SPEAKER_06: Yeah, well, I mean that's their that's their that's their era.
- 10:16SPEAKER_08: Yeah, nobody plays that stuff around here.
- 10:17SPEAKER_08: Wow, there's a couple bands that play some of it.
- 10:19SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 10:20SPEAKER_08: But uh yeah, we had a whole two hours full.
- 10:22SPEAKER_06: Yeah of uh two and a half hours.
- 10:24SPEAKER_08: Two and a half hours.
- 10:24SPEAKER_06: That was great, man.
- 10:25SPEAKER_08: Um so yeah, that was a successful gig.
- 10:27SPEAKER_08: And then and then we played uh that was Thursday night, last Thursday, and then we played a class reunion, the 50th class reunion, yeah.
- 10:36SPEAKER_08: Class of 1974.
- 10:37SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 10:38SPEAKER_08: Uh and we were essentially background music, but we're used to that.
- 10:41SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 10:41SPEAKER_08: You know, so much so that's nothing.
- 10:43SPEAKER_08: So much so that towards the end of the night we just started playing our own songs.
- 10:46SPEAKER_08: Songs songs that we wrote, and nobody cared.
- 10:48SPEAKER_06: Nobody even no nobody even thought anything was.
- 10:51SPEAKER_06: They were kind of grooving to it.
- 10:52SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I don't remember this song from 1970.
- 10:54SPEAKER_06: Didn't Bob Seager do this?
- 10:55SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah, it was about So yeah, uh, but it was it was good.
- 11:00SPEAKER_08: They paid us a little more than we were asking, so that's it's always good.
- 11:03SPEAKER_06: That was really funny because she came over and she's like, uh, you guys get paid 360, right?
- 11:08SPEAKER_06: And I I snapped my head over at you, and you were like, Yep.
- 11:12SPEAKER_06: I'm like, nah.
- 11:14SPEAKER_08: Uh wait till I tell you, uh, I'm not gonna do it on the podcast because it's just it's just not uh appropriate.
- 11:21SPEAKER_08: But I did get a c a text from uh Mr.
- 11:24SPEAKER_08: Morton uh because I did order some music folders through KMH.
- 11:29SPEAKER_08: But uh just read this, don't read it out loud.
- 11:33SPEAKER_08: Um but read that last part of the text because we've been talking about fees.
- 11:40SPEAKER_08: Does that blow your mind?
- 11:43SPEAKER_08: Whoa! Yeah, does that blow your mind?
- 11:45SPEAKER_08: That does blow my mind.
- 11:47SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 11:48SPEAKER_08: So What the flip, dude.
- 11:50SPEAKER_08: I know, so I think we're undercharging.
- 11:53SPEAKER_08: I think and you know, my wife is gonna get mad at me because she's been telling me that you and I should raise our rate.
- 11:58SPEAKER_06: I just think it's it's uh Well, if if we raise our rate, we're dropping back the hours.
- 12:05SPEAKER_08: Meaning meaning what?
- 12:06SPEAKER_08: So if we if we raise our rate by$200, we're gonna do it for two hours?
- 12:11SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 12:12SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 12:13SPEAKER_08: What does that make sense?
- 12:15SPEAKER_06: It does for me because I don't want to play for three hours.
- 12:18SPEAKER_08: Yeah, three hours is a long time.
- 12:19SPEAKER_08: Yeah, three hours is a long time.
- 12:20SPEAKER_06: Wow, that's a lot.
- 12:22SPEAKER_08: I know that I saw that and I was like, wow.
- 12:24SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that's crazy.
- 12:25SPEAKER_06: That's more than we charge as Common Crossing.
- 12:28SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 12:29SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 12:29SPEAKER_06: We were well, I mean, people got their money's worth with us.
- 12:32SPEAKER_06: Yeah, of course they didn't.
- 12:32SPEAKER_06: Because it was music and a show.
- 12:34SPEAKER_08: Not to say, 'cause so so so what Chris Morton had sent me was a text saying that a couple of local bands uh charge a certain amount of money to play at festivals and I don't know if the bars, I guess.
- 12:47SPEAKER_08: I don't know if they're playing in bars anymore.
- 12:49SPEAKER_08: I don't know if anybody playing bars anymore.
- 12:51SPEAKER_08: But uh but they they charge a l a lot of money.
- 12:55SPEAKER_08: And uh you know, they're worth that.
- 13:00SPEAKER_08: Right?
- 13:01SPEAKER_08: I mean, I think well some of them.
- 13:04SPEAKER_08: Um bands should be paid stuff like that, don't you think?
- 13:08SPEAKER_06: Yeah, but you gotta remember the area that's that's why I you know I keep saying and I mean those prices are probably low if you're in Portland or Boston.
- 13:18SPEAKER_08: No, I think it's just the opposite.
- 13:20SPEAKER_08: Because bands in Portland and in Boston, believe it or not, pay to play.
- 13:27SPEAKER_06: Oh, so they're so it's kind of like what Joko goes through.
- 13:30SPEAKER_08: Right, it's so it's exposure.
- 13:31SPEAKER_08: So it's like, you want to play here?
- 13:33SPEAKER_08: Okay, you pay you get people in here, and maybe I'll think about paying you.
- 13:38SPEAKER_06: Wow, that would suck.
- 13:40SPEAKER_08: Yeah, and that's that's and but it's always been like that.
- 13:42SPEAKER_06: Well, I'm sure, yeah.
- 13:43SPEAKER_06: I mean there's more talent down that way.
- 13:45SPEAKER_08: Yeah, up here, but there is that and my wife talks about this all the time, that Arusta County mentality where it's like, well, we'll keep the price low, that way we'll get work.
- 13:55SPEAKER_08: And you know, we're worth more, but we don't want to charge what we're worth because we want to keep getting work.
- 14:03SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I mean there there is such a thing as up here.
- 14:05SPEAKER_06: Well, I mean, because I mean it's not well nobody's made of money up here.
- 14:09SPEAKER_06: There are people that's true.
- 14:10SPEAKER_06: There's people that think they are, but they're not.
- 14:12SPEAKER_06: It's true, you know.
- 14:13SPEAKER_06: But when you come to festivals like Well, festivals is a different thing.
- 14:16SPEAKER_06: I mean, you have sponsors and you know, there's a budget and stuff like that.
- 14:20SPEAKER_06: But if if I'm if we're playing at a bar, I mean we're not you can't, I don't think you can charge that.
- 14:28SPEAKER_06: I don't think you can, man.
- 14:29SPEAKER_06: I mean, I I mean if you could, I mean, that'd be one thing.
- 14:32SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 14:33SPEAKER_06: But you're gonna rely on tips, man.
- 14:36SPEAKER_08: Oh yeah.
- 14:36SPEAKER_08: You know what I mean?
- 14:38SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I still I still love what we do, you and I.
- 14:42SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 14:42SPEAKER_08: Don't be don't get me wrong, I love playing in a band.
- 14:45SPEAKER_08: But you and I, as an acoustic duo, can show up and set up in ten minutes.
- 14:50SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 14:50SPEAKER_08: And we play for three hours, sometimes with a break, sometimes not.
- 14:54SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 14:55SPEAKER_08: And we make the same or more than we used to make in a band.
- 14:59SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 15:00SPEAKER_08: And and ten minutes to tear down and we're out of there.
- 15:03SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and we're gone.
- 15:03SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 15:04SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 15:04SPEAKER_08: I love that.
- 15:05SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 15:06SPEAKER_06: We're like the special forces of music, you know.
- 15:09SPEAKER_06: It's yeah.
- 15:10SPEAKER_06: We didn't be in your stat.
- 15:11SPEAKER_06: We just drop in out of helicopters and we shouldn't set up play and then we're gone.
- 15:15SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 15:15SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
- 15:16SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 15:16SPEAKER_06: So that's that's we're like SEAL team six.
- 15:18SPEAKER_08: And we can and we can play what we want, kind of.
- 15:21SPEAKER_08: You know, it's like, I've never done this song.
- 15:23SPEAKER_08: Well, we did some at the thing the other night.
- 15:25SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 15:25SPEAKER_08: We did a bunch of songs from 1974 that we've never ever played before.
- 15:29SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 15:30SPEAKER_08: I had the lyrics and the chords in front of me, and I said, Well, let's try this one.
- 15:33SPEAKER_08: And it went pretty well.
- 15:34SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 15:35SPEAKER_08: Most of them, most of them, you know.
- 15:36SPEAKER_08: So we could add that to our repertoire if we wanted to.
- 15:40SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 15:40SPEAKER_06: And it's I was about to say because the end of next month we're back down at the down under.
- 15:46SPEAKER_06: And uh, so maybe you know, throw some of that new stuff in it.
- 15:49SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
- 15:50SPEAKER_08: Yeah, exactly.
- 15:51SPEAKER_08: So so I I dig it that you know, especially we, you know, and we we get to harmonize with each other, and it's it's just a cool thing.
- 15:58SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 15:58SPEAKER_08: It's just but it's probably uh as much as I love this indicate, it's probably my favorite kind of gig is you and I.
- 16:04SPEAKER_06: Well, it's just because it's quick.
- 16:05SPEAKER_08: It's quick and it's a quick setup, it's an easy setup.
- 16:08SPEAKER_08: Um, you know, if the if the crowd is not listening, we don't care.
- 16:11SPEAKER_08: We don't care because it's like we're we're now now we're just playing.
- 16:15SPEAKER_08: We're playing for each other.
- 16:16SPEAKER_08: Playing for each other, yeah.
- 16:18SPEAKER_08: Which is fine.
- 16:18SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 16:19SPEAKER_08: So so that's cool.
- 16:20SPEAKER_06: Yeah, we're we're more used to people not when people listen, I get creeped out because I'm like, what what what are you what are you doing?
- 16:26SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 16:26SPEAKER_06: Are you are you actually hey white people, stop clapping?
- 16:30SPEAKER_06: You're clapping on you're clapping on one and three, I'm a two and four, you're I'm gonna go over there and break your hands.
- 16:35SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 16:36SPEAKER_06: You know, so yeah.
- 16:37SPEAKER_08: Um I want to go back to something we touched on last podcast, which was we started talking about hairbands, right?
- 16:44SPEAKER_06: Wasn't it a mixtape question?
- 16:45SPEAKER_08: No, that was that was that was a couple weeks ago.
- 16:48SPEAKER_06: We were when we we watched that uh trailer for that new.
- 16:50SPEAKER_08: Oh, that's right.
- 16:51SPEAKER_08: Um, so so we were talking about who we consider a hairband.
- 16:58SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 16:58SPEAKER_08: Uh it just so happens that Ultimate Classic Rock came out with the big four of hairbands.
- 17:05SPEAKER_08: So I want to read I want to read the beginning of the article, and then I want to see if your big four or big five, let's go big five.
- 17:12SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 17:12SPEAKER_08: Matches what mine is and what Ultimate Classic Rocks is.
- 17:17SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 17:17SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 17:18SPEAKER_08: So let me read uh part of that article because it's it's kind of interesting.
- 17:22SPEAKER_08: So the paradox of hair metal, this is on ultimate classicrockrock.com, by the way.
- 17:26SPEAKER_08: The paradox of hair metal is that anybody who claims to be a fan of the subgenre knows it's not real.
- 17:32SPEAKER_08: Interesting.
- 17:34SPEAKER_08: Uh it's a catch-all term for the pop-infused hard rock that dominated the sunset strip and commanded airwaves in the eighties.
- 17:40SPEAKER_08: Critics of this brighter, frothier strain of metal dismiss bands for caring more about their big hair and ridiculous clothing than their music.
- 17:48SPEAKER_08: Hence, hair metal emerged as a popular pejorative after the scene's drastic decline in the 90s.
- 17:55SPEAKER_08: Problem with hair metal is that it reduces a decade's worth of bands to a derogatory two-word phrase.
- 18:01SPEAKER_08: Critics unfairly lumped Van Halen, Montle Cru, Wasp, Queensrike, The Cult, Extreme, Guns N' Roses, Aerosmith, and numerous other bands under the same umbrella, even though they all had unique takes on the hard rock de jour.
- 18:15SPEAKER_08: Still I know, right?
- 18:17SPEAKER_08: Still, whether you accept or reject the hair metal label, there's no denying that it's taken root in the pop cultural lexicon.
- 18:23SPEAKER_08: And just as thrash metal had its big four, this subdrama has its tenth pole bands that came to define a movement.
- 18:31SPEAKER_08: Read on to see the big four of hair metal.
- 18:34SPEAKER_08: Okay, so they picked four.
- 18:35SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 18:35SPEAKER_08: I think maybe we should we could pick five.
- 18:37SPEAKER_08: Sure.
- 18:38SPEAKER_08: So so the first one that you think of when you think of hair metal, it must be the same one that I think of.
- 18:44SPEAKER_08: Poison.
- 18:44SPEAKER_08: Poison.
- 18:45SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 18:45SPEAKER_08: And that's on their list.
- 18:46SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 18:47SPEAKER_08: So there's poison.
- 18:48SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 18:49SPEAKER_08: I would say uh when I think of hair metal as the term, pro poison to me would be number one.
- 18:58SPEAKER_08: That would be the first one I think of.
- 18:59SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 19:00SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 19:01SPEAKER_08: So kind of expand, expand that thought.
- 19:05SPEAKER_08: Because I don't consider the cult hair metal at all.
- 19:08SPEAKER_08: Cult?
- 19:09SPEAKER_08: I know.
- 19:09SPEAKER_08: That's that's what they listed.
- 19:10SPEAKER_08: Why?
- 19:10SPEAKER_08: I don't consider Van Halen.
- 19:11SPEAKER_08: I don't see consider um um uh who was the other one that uh Queensreich.
- 19:17SPEAKER_08: Queensriche is not hair metal.
- 19:19SPEAKER_08: I don't consider I think it's progressive.
- 19:21SPEAKER_06: It is, but they did do the you know the hair thing.
- 19:25SPEAKER_06: The hair and the makeup thing.
- 19:27SPEAKER_06: Well, it was more like Je it was Jeff Tate more than it was the rest of the band.
- 19:32SPEAKER_06: I still don't but I yeah, I agree.
- 19:34SPEAKER_06: I I I don't consider them hair metal personally.
- 19:37SPEAKER_08: And to be honest, uh, and we've talked about this, I don't consider Jeff Leopard hair metal.
- 19:41SPEAKER_06: No.
- 19:41SPEAKER_08: Because they started in the 70s.
- 19:43SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 19:44SPEAKER_08: Um so anyway, poison.
- 19:46SPEAKER_08: Okay, so what is another one on in your top five?
- 19:48SPEAKER_08: Crew.
- 19:49SPEAKER_08: Motley Crew.
- 19:50SPEAKER_08: Okay, that is number five on their list, or for number four on their list.
- 19:53SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 19:53SPEAKER_08: So poison and the crew are in their top four.
- 19:55SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 19:56SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 19:56SPEAKER_08: And mine too.
- 19:58SPEAKER_08: Um who's another one?
- 20:02SPEAKER_08: See, that's where it gets tough.
- 20:03SPEAKER_08: I know.
- 20:03SPEAKER_06: Yeah, you're just like, I don't know.
- 20:05SPEAKER_06: Because there were so many.
- 20:06SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 20:06SPEAKER_06: Uh, you know.
- 20:08SPEAKER_06: I I would consider rat maybe-ish.
- 20:12SPEAKER_06: It was on the fringe.
- 20:13SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 20:14SPEAKER_06: Uh I would I would say rat was it was definitely hair metal.
- 20:17SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 20:18SPEAKER_06: Um But I mean, there were smaller bands like Britney Fox, but that were very hair metal.
- 20:25SPEAKER_08: Yeah, we're talking, but we're talking the top.
- 20:27SPEAKER_08: The big ones, yeah, I know.
- 20:28SPEAKER_06: That's what I'm saying.
- 20:29SPEAKER_08: So you said Poison and Motley Crue.
- 20:31SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 20:32SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 20:33SPEAKER_08: So we need uh three, four, and five.
- 20:35SPEAKER_08: Or maybe just three, four, I don't know.
- 20:36SPEAKER_08: Whatever you want to do.
- 20:38SPEAKER_08: So the echelon of hair metal.
- 20:44SPEAKER_08: And you can, and you can I don't know anymore.
- 20:46SPEAKER_06: I mean, I mean, I don't know what I consider to be hair metal.
- 20:50SPEAKER_08: So they lump all of that.
- 20:51SPEAKER_08: They they lump Def Leppard, they lump uh uh Queensreck, the cult extreme, gun they lump Guns and Roses.
- 20:58SPEAKER_08: Yeah, guns and roses never hair metal.
- 21:01SPEAKER_08: Right, Aerosmith.
- 21:02SPEAKER_06: Speaking of which, quick tangent, yeah.
- 21:05SPEAKER_06: We should start doing uh Used to Love Her in our acoustic set.
- 21:10SPEAKER_08: Yeah?
- 21:11SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 21:12SPEAKER_08: But I had to kill her?
- 21:13SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 21:13SPEAKER_08: Yeah, but that would be go overgraded the class of 1974.
- 21:17SPEAKER_06: Well, yeah, I mean they they weren't listening anyway, so it doesn't really matter.
- 21:20SPEAKER_08: That's true.
- 21:20SPEAKER_06: But I'm saying it's just it's just a fun song.
- 21:22SPEAKER_06: Oh yeah.
- 21:23SPEAKER_06: I heard it the other uh I was heard I was listening to 80s on eight on Sirius XM and Rick Springfield does his like hour-long show.
- 21:30SPEAKER_06: He does, yep.
- 21:30SPEAKER_06: And he played that.
- 21:31SPEAKER_06: He's like, oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 21:33SPEAKER_06: So I thought that was pretty great.
- 21:34SPEAKER_06: Cool.
- 21:35SPEAKER_06: So Oh, okay.
- 21:37SPEAKER_06: Anyway, tangent.
- 21:38SPEAKER_06: Uh we're we're back on ramp on today.
- 21:40SPEAKER_08: Hair metal.
- 21:41SPEAKER_08: Number three.
- 21:41SPEAKER_06: Uh I'm gonna say rat.
- 21:43SPEAKER_08: You're gonna say rat.
- 21:44SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 21:44SPEAKER_08: Yeah, rat.
- 21:45SPEAKER_08: Uh rat is not in their top five or top four.
- 21:48SPEAKER_08: Okay, who else?
- 21:50SPEAKER_08: Rat wouldn't have been in mine either.
- 21:52SPEAKER_06: I'm just I'm just trying to think back to you know, everybody that was.
- 21:55SPEAKER_06: What about uh docking?
- 21:57SPEAKER_06: Oh yeah, docking.
- 21:58SPEAKER_08: Yeah, they were different.
- 21:59SPEAKER_08: They were definitely here in.
- 22:00SPEAKER_08: So Darken.
- 22:02SPEAKER_08: Who else?
- 22:04SPEAKER_08: We could go just top four if you want.
- 22:06SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I'll just do four.
- 22:07SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 22:08SPEAKER_06: I'm having a hard time coming up with it.
- 22:10SPEAKER_08: Um I'm having a hard time coming up with um because I don't like I said, I don't consider Def Leopard or uh Yeah, Van Halen, Queensrake.
- 22:20SPEAKER_06: No, they're not hair metal.
- 22:21SPEAKER_08: But they're top four.
- 22:22SPEAKER_08: So I should should I reveal reveal their top four?
- 22:25SPEAKER_08: Poison.
- 22:26SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 22:26SPEAKER_08: Motley Crue.
- 22:27SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 22:27SPEAKER_08: Def Leopard.
- 22:28SPEAKER_08: Two and Bon Jovi.
- 22:31SPEAKER_08: Bon Jovi?
- 22:32SPEAKER_08: I never considered Bon Jovi metal.
- 22:33unknown: T.
- 22:34SPEAKER_06: Nah, they were more hard rock.
- 22:35SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 22:36SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 22:36SPEAKER_08: So let me uh actually let me give their order.
- 22:38SPEAKER_08: So Motley Crue was number five.
- 22:41SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 22:42SPEAKER_08: Uh Def Leopard number four.
- 22:45SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 22:45SPEAKER_08: Bon Jovi number three.
- 22:47SPEAKER_06: Nah, I don't get that, man.
- 22:48SPEAKER_08: Poison number two.
- 22:49SPEAKER_06: I tell you get that.
- 22:51SPEAKER_08: Uh yeah.
- 22:52SPEAKER_08: Oh, wait a second.
- 22:53SPEAKER_08: There was only four, right?
- 22:54SPEAKER_08: Did I miss somebody?
- 22:55SPEAKER_08: I don't know.
- 22:55SPEAKER_08: Hold on.
- 22:56SPEAKER_06: I can't I can't tell you.
- 22:57SPEAKER_08: I only did four, right?
- 22:58SPEAKER_08: So we only we only roll four.
- 23:00SPEAKER_08: Motley Crew was four.
- 23:01SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 23:01SPEAKER_08: Uh Def Leopard three.
- 23:04SPEAKER_08: Uh Bon Jovi two and Poison one.
- 23:06SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 23:07SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 23:07SPEAKER_08: See, I wouldn't have put Bon Jovi as hair hair band.
- 23:12SPEAKER_06: A hair band, yes.
- 23:13SPEAKER_06: But not hair metal.
- 23:14SPEAKER_08: Yeah, not hair metal.
- 23:15SPEAKER_08: No, not even close, right?
- 23:17SPEAKER_08: No.
- 23:17SPEAKER_08: I I I wouldn't have put less.
- 23:19SPEAKER_06: I mean, look, I mean look at poison.
- 23:20SPEAKER_06: Look at that picture of poison.
- 23:22SPEAKER_08: I mean, that is like that is the epitome of hair metal.
- 23:27SPEAKER_08: I would go with before I would go with um see to me, rat and motley crew come from the same uh school.
- 23:36SPEAKER_08: You know what I mean?
- 23:37SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 23:37SPEAKER_08: Uh that Sunset Strip L poison too.
- 23:41SPEAKER_08: Poison, Motley Crue, Rat Well, Dawkins.
- 23:44SPEAKER_08: Dawkins was on the Sunset Strip, right?
- 23:46SPEAKER_08: Well, so was Stryper, but they were the Rock Rock's regime at that point.
- 23:49SPEAKER_08: Oh, wait a second.
- 23:50SPEAKER_08: So Van Halen was on the Sunset Strip, too.
- 23:52SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I but I don't consider because they were in the 70s, 76.
- 23:56SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 23:56SPEAKER_08: Right?
- 23:56SPEAKER_08: I or 78.
- 23:57SPEAKER_08: I don't c I don't consider them hair metal.
- 23:59SPEAKER_08: No.
- 24:00SPEAKER_08: So I but I I I agree with you.
- 24:03SPEAKER_08: Poison, Motley Crue, Rat, Dawken.
- 24:06SPEAKER_08: Uh who else?
- 24:08SPEAKER_08: When I think of hair metal, I think of the Sunset Strip.
- 24:10SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 24:11SPEAKER_08: You said Britney Fox.
- 24:12SPEAKER_08: I don't think they're in the the top of the state.
- 24:13SPEAKER_08: Well, I mean, but they were definitely Cinderella.
- 24:16SPEAKER_06: Cinderella, yeah.
- 24:16SPEAKER_06: They I I don't know if I they're no they're not metal.
- 24:20SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 24:20SPEAKER_08: They were considered metal though back in the day.
- 24:22SPEAKER_06: Well, yeah, but you know that I mean we you know, with discerning ears, you would be like, well, this is more blues rock.
- 24:29SPEAKER_08: It is.
- 24:29SPEAKER_06: You know, with a with an edge.
- 24:31SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 24:31SPEAKER_06: You know what I mean?
- 24:31SPEAKER_06: It was never.
- 24:33SPEAKER_06: Of course, I mean, how can you be hair metal when you're singing, you know?
- 24:37SPEAKER_06: That's why I don't consider ACDC hair metal.
- 24:40SPEAKER_06: No, they're blues rock.
- 24:42SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 24:42SPEAKER_06: That's why and that's where I would put Cinderella.
- 24:46SPEAKER_08: I wouldn't put them with hair metal at all.
- 24:48SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 24:49SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 24:49SPEAKER_08: I agree.
- 24:50SPEAKER_06: Um I mean Tom Kiefer had the hair.
- 24:52SPEAKER_06: Don't get me wrong.
- 24:53SPEAKER_06: Well they all did.
- 24:54SPEAKER_06: Eric, Eric putting him the bass player, his hair was huge.
- 24:56SPEAKER_06: I mean he was huge, yeah.
- 24:57SPEAKER_06: And I don't I don't consider him hair metal.
- 24:59SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 25:00SPEAKER_08: Okay, the other thing that Ultimate Classic Rock has, and this is gonna be even tougher, if you had a hard time thinking of of the uh top four hair bands, um this is the top thirty rock riffs.
- 25:18SPEAKER_06: Ooh, interesting.
- 25:19SPEAKER_08: Uh and I'm not worried about naming all thirty.
- 25:21SPEAKER_08: I mean we'll name we'll name their thirty.
- 25:23SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 25:24SPEAKER_08: But you if you give me a give me a uh rock riff, like a classic rock riff that you should think would be on the list.
- 25:32SPEAKER_06: Scorpions.
- 25:33SPEAKER_06: Or rock you like a hurricane.
- 25:35SPEAKER_06: Not even on the list.
- 25:35SPEAKER_06: Not even what?
- 25:36SPEAKER_06: Not even on the list.
- 25:37SPEAKER_06: As soon as you hear that, you know exactly what song it is.
- 25:40SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 25:40SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 25:42SPEAKER_08: And I there's one song in there that I have to look up because I've never heard it.
- 25:46SPEAKER_06: Oh well.
- 25:49SPEAKER_06: They always put an outlier, and you're always like, what?
- 25:51SPEAKER_06: Nobody ever heard this song except you guys.
- 25:53SPEAKER_08: Okay, give me another one.
- 25:55SPEAKER_08: Um I definitely would have put Rocky Like a Hurricane on there.
- 25:57SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I mean that's that's obvious.
- 25:59SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 26:00SPEAKER_08: Um stuff you heard on the radio on the way over, or you know, you know, just because the core is classic rock.
- 26:11SPEAKER_06: Well, I mean what I would consider rock raps are probably different from what they would consider, like you know, top rock raps.
- 26:18SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 26:19SPEAKER_08: Just give me a few minutes and I'll see if they're on the list.
- 26:23SPEAKER_06: Uh in my dreams.
- 26:35SPEAKER_08: No Doncan on the list.
- 26:36SPEAKER_08: No Donc on the list.
- 26:37SPEAKER_08: No Don on the list.
- 26:38SPEAKER_08: Who's your other favorite band?
- 26:39SPEAKER_08: Rush.
- 26:40SPEAKER_08: Rush.
- 26:40SPEAKER_08: They're number 30.
- 26:42SPEAKER_08: Spear with radio.
- 26:43SPEAKER_08: It's the only Rush song on the list.
- 26:47SPEAKER_06: Yeah, but that uh well, I I guess so.
- 26:49SPEAKER_08: Is that the little I get that?
- 26:54SPEAKER_08: You got another one?
- 26:55SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 26:55SPEAKER_08: Think AC D C.
- 26:56SPEAKER_08: I think uh Oh wow, Back in Black.
- 26:59SPEAKER_08: Back in Black is number five.
- 27:00SPEAKER_06: Okay, yeah.
- 27:01SPEAKER_08: Uh and You Shook Me All Night Long is number 18.
- 27:03SPEAKER_08: So you've got two on the list.
- 27:04SPEAKER_06: Two on the list, okay.
- 27:05SPEAKER_06: That makes sense.
- 27:06SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 27:06SPEAKER_08: Anybody else?
- 27:07SPEAKER_08: Uh think legendary riff.
- 27:10SPEAKER_08: Like what's one of the first things you play when you pick up a guitar?
- 27:13SPEAKER_08: Smoke on the water.
- 27:13SPEAKER_08: Smoke on the water.
- 27:14SPEAKER_08: That is number two.
- 27:15SPEAKER_06: Ah, of course.
- 27:16SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 27:23SPEAKER_06: Is Hendrix on there?
- 27:24SPEAKER_08: Hendrix is on there.
- 27:26SPEAKER_08: Which one?
- 27:26SPEAKER_06: Uh probably Purple Haze.
- 27:28SPEAKER_06: Purple Hayes, number 11.
- 27:29SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 27:29SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 27:30SPEAKER_08: That's the only one.
- 27:31SPEAKER_08: Only Hendrix one?
- 27:31SPEAKER_08: Yeah, only Hendrix.
- 27:32SPEAKER_08: Interesting.
- 27:33SPEAKER_08: There's only, believe it or not.
- 27:35SPEAKER_06: I wonder, i is Van Halen on there?
- 27:38SPEAKER_06: For because I mean eruption.
- 27:40SPEAKER_06: Everybody knows eruption.
- 27:41SPEAKER_08: That's not really a riff.
- 27:42SPEAKER_06: Not a riff, but neither is right.
- 27:46SPEAKER_08: So eruption is not on there.
- 27:49SPEAKER_08: However, Panama is.
- 27:51SPEAKER_08: Ah.
- 27:51SPEAKER_08: At number number 21.
- 27:53SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 27:53SPEAKER_08: And unrelated well, kind of related.
- 27:56SPEAKER_08: Number three is the Kinks.

- 28:01SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 28:02SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 28:02SPEAKER_08: That doesn't make sense.
- 28:03SPEAKER_08: Um and there's two two Led Zeppelins on the list.
- 28:08SPEAKER_08: What do you think they are?
- 28:11SPEAKER_08: Uh Black Dog?
- 28:12SPEAKER_08: Nope.
- 28:14SPEAKER_06: Rock and roll.
- 28:15SPEAKER_08: Nope.
- 28:17SPEAKER_06: Stairway to heaven?
- 28:18SPEAKER_08: Nope.
- 28:24SPEAKER_08: A lot of loud.
- 28:25SPEAKER_08: That is number 29.
- 28:28SPEAKER_08: That's number four.
- 28:29SPEAKER_08: Of course not.
- 28:31SPEAKER_08: Immigrant song.
- 28:34SPEAKER_08: Yeah, is number 29.
- 28:35SPEAKER_06: Really?
- 28:36SPEAKER_08: Interesting.
- 28:36SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 28:38SPEAKER_08: Anybody else?
- 28:38SPEAKER_08: Let's see.
- 28:43SPEAKER_08: Oh, you're looking at me?
- 28:44SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 28:44SPEAKER_08: Oh, I don't know.
- 28:45SPEAKER_06: I don't know.
- 28:45SPEAKER_06: I can't think of any of that.
- 28:46SPEAKER_08: So there's another ACDC.
- 28:47SPEAKER_08: Did I mention that?
- 28:48SPEAKER_08: Uh Back in Black is number five.
- 28:50SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 28:52SPEAKER_08: Is number 18.
- 28:53SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 28:54SPEAKER_08: Uh A uh Aerosmith's Walk This Way is number 19.
- 28:57SPEAKER_06: Oh, yeah, that makes sense.
- 28:58SPEAKER_08: Uh let's see.
- 29:00SPEAKER_08: Uh Nirvana smells like Teen Spirit is number six.
- 29:04SPEAKER_08: Sunshine of Your Love from Cream.
- 29:06SPEAKER_06: I never would have put that on there.
- 29:07SPEAKER_08: Is number seven.
- 29:08SPEAKER_08: But it makes sense.
- 29:09SPEAKER_08: Uh Black Sabbath's Iron Man.
- 29:11SPEAKER_06: Oh yeah.
- 29:12SPEAKER_08: Is dude.
- 29:15SPEAKER_08: That's number eight.

- 29:25SPEAKER_08: Lagrange from Z Z Top, which is essentially a uh Johnny Hooker.
- 29:28SPEAKER_08: John Lee Hooker.
- 29:29SPEAKER_08: Yeah, but that's that that's number 13.
- 29:32SPEAKER_08: All right now from Free.
- 29:38SPEAKER_08: The Who.
- 29:39SPEAKER_08: I can't explain.
- 29:45SPEAKER_06: I might not have picked that one.
- 29:47SPEAKER_06: I probably wouldn't have put that up there, but I mean it makes sense.
- 29:50SPEAKER_08: Uh Ted Nugent Stranglehold is number 16.
- 29:54SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I get that.
- 29:54SPEAKER_08: Neil Young Cinnamon Girl.
- 29:58SPEAKER_08: It's a memorable riff.
- 30:00SPEAKER_08: Number 17.
- 30:01SPEAKER_06: I guess.
- 30:02SPEAKER_08: The police, every breath you take.
- 30:07SPEAKER_08: That's number 20.
- 30:08SPEAKER_08: Tom Petty's Running Down the Dream.
- 30:10SPEAKER_08: Oh yeah.
- 30:12SPEAKER_08: Only one Beatles song on the list.
- 30:16SPEAKER_08: At number 23, Day Tripper.
- 30:24SPEAKER_08: Montrose's Rock Candy is number 24.
- 30:28SPEAKER_08: Pink Floyd Money.
- 30:34SPEAKER_08: Right?
- 30:35SPEAKER_08: Uh Blue Eyes Dicult, Don't Fear the Reaper.
- 30:37SPEAKER_08: Oh yeah.
- 30:38SPEAKER_08: Number 26.
- 30:40SPEAKER_08: Uh Dire Straits, Money for Nothing.
- 30:42SPEAKER_08: Money, yeah.
- 30:43SPEAKER_08: Number 27.
- 30:44SPEAKER_08: And before I do the next one, number 28, because I want to listen to that one.
- 30:48SPEAKER_08: I never told you what number one was.
- 30:50SPEAKER_08: What do you think the number one rock riff is?
- 30:55SPEAKER_06: It's probably gonna be something stupid knowing alternate rock.
- 30:58SPEAKER_06: Uh I wouldn't say it's stupid.
- 31:04SPEAKER_06: Is it kiss?
- 31:05SPEAKER_06: Nope.
- 31:05SPEAKER_06: Okay, good.
- 31:06SPEAKER_06: I don't I don't care then.
- 31:08SPEAKER_06: If it's just as long as it's not kiss.
- 31:13SPEAKER_08: The stone.
- 31:14SPEAKER_08: The stones.
- 31:15SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 31:15SPEAKER_08: I can't get no satisfaction.
- 31:16SPEAKER_08: I can't get no satisfaction.
- 31:18SPEAKER_08: Number one rock riff.
- 31:20SPEAKER_08: Okay, so number 28.
- 31:23SPEAKER_08: Uh I don't know why this is on the list.
- 31:26SPEAKER_08: I've never heard this song.
- 31:28SPEAKER_08: That doesn't mean anything.
- 31:29SPEAKER_08: But I say I've never heard it, but let me play it and see if it's actually something.
- 31:36SPEAKER_06: Sounds like something out of the 90s.
- 31:39SPEAKER_06: It's new order.
- 31:41SPEAKER_06: Age of consent.
- 31:48SPEAKER_06: Would you put this on the list?
- 31:51SPEAKER_06: Absolutely not.
- 31:55SPEAKER_08: Oh, and I forgot.
- 31:57SPEAKER_08: One.
- 32:00SPEAKER_08: Um.
- 32:02SPEAKER_08: David Bowie, Rebel Rebel, is number 12.
- 32:06unknown: Yeah.
- 32:08SPEAKER_08: This was number 28.
- 32:12SPEAKER_08: Not to not to take anything away from New Order, but this is not one of the top 30 rock riffs.
- 32:19SPEAKER_03: I'm not the kind that needs to tell you just what you Yeah, I don't even I this is the first time I've even hearing it.
- 32:26SPEAKER_06: Me too.
- 32:26SPEAKER_08: Me too.
- 32:27SPEAKER_08: That's gotta be one of those, you know, where they compiled a list with a bunch of their writers and uh they lobbied to have their their list put in, you know, and and they kind of acquiesced and put new order on the list or something.
- 32:43SPEAKER_06: Well, it's probably the most annoying guy in the group.
- 32:46SPEAKER_06: Okay, we'll put it in if you'll shut up.
- 32:48SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
- 32:49SPEAKER_08: So uh Jude gave me a thumbs up, so Jude's in.
- 32:52SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 32:52SPEAKER_08: Uh and Eli just got here.
- 32:55SPEAKER_08: Let me text him.
- 32:58SPEAKER_08: Are you and Finn doing fantasy?
- 33:12SPEAKER_08: So yeah, uh the top 30 rock riffs according to Ultimate Classic Rock.
- 33:17SPEAKER_08: I would I agree with a lot of them.
- 33:18SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 33:18SPEAKER_08: Um there are there are some that I would put on there that weren't on there.
- 33:23SPEAKER_08: I still can't believe Rocky like a hurricane.
- 33:25SPEAKER_06: I know, that's one of the ones that I mean as soon as you hear it, you know exactly what's coming in.
- 33:30SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
- 33:33SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 33:33SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 33:34SPEAKER_08: Um a bunch of silly heads.
- 33:39SPEAKER_08: A bunch of silly heads.
- 33:41SPEAKER_08: Um moving on, we do have a new song.
- 33:45SPEAKER_08: Remember when uh uh a couple is it last podcast or the podcast before we played a new Brian Adams song?
- 33:50SPEAKER_06: Oh yeah, well it was a new song, it was uh Right.
- 33:53SPEAKER_08: It was an old one that he had written and and was it Kiss had done?
- 33:56SPEAKER_06: Yeah, War Machine.
- 33:57SPEAKER_08: No, no, not the not the no, we're doing that now.
- 33:59SPEAKER_08: Oh we didn't do more machine, we did rock and roll hell.
- 34:03SPEAKER_06: Rock and roll hell, yeah.
- 34:04SPEAKER_06: Rock and roll hell.
- 34:04SPEAKER_06: That's right.
- 34:05SPEAKER_08: And we're really impressed with it.
- 34:06SPEAKER_08: I wasn't really impressed.
- 34:07SPEAKER_06: No, it wasn't that good.
- 34:08SPEAKER_08: So so he's done another one because he wrote another song for KISS called War Machine.
- 34:13SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 34:14SPEAKER_08: Um and I don't know what it is because I listened to Brian's version, and it seems I don't know if it's uh recording techniques, um, I don't know, like because in the 70s everything just sounded maybe because it was on tape.
- 34:29SPEAKER_08: Well it was analog.
- 34:30SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:31SPEAKER_08: It just sounded meatier, yeah.
- 34:32SPEAKER_08: And um so I'll give you an example.
- 34:35SPEAKER_08: So here's here's Kiss's version of War Machine It's also that this is Kiss, it's a rock band, so it's I don't think people got the got the idea that it was a protest problem.
- 35:20SPEAKER_08: It's a protest on protesting.
- 35:25SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 35:33SPEAKER_08: People weren't listening to the lyrics.
- 35:53SPEAKER_08: You got how that sounds dyssonically.
- 35:56SPEAKER_08: And if you listen to Brian Adams' version, the uh co-writer of the song, um it just doesn't fly.
- 36:04SPEAKER_08: Uh plus the video is very anti-war.
- 36:09SPEAKER_08: Um, I'm not gonna do it.
- 36:39SPEAKER_06: Okay, number one, why not nobody to my nice try?
- 36:59SPEAKER_06: Okay, number one, you're not gonna drop flares while you're dropping a bomb.
- 37:04SPEAKER_06: I'm sorry, because that's just gonna confuse the you're reading a little too much of it.
- 37:09SPEAKER_06: Just protecting your stupid video.
- 37:24SPEAKER_06: Is that right at him?
- 37:25SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 37:25SPEAKER_06: He does a pretty good Tommy Lee Jones at first.
- 37:29SPEAKER_06: So does he suppose we're like the IA?
- 37:32SPEAKER_08: Yeah, call it calling all the shots.
- 37:37SPEAKER_08: I don't think there's anybody that is for war.
- 37:43SPEAKER_08: It's a necessary.
- 37:44SPEAKER_08: Sometimes it's a necessary well, you think about it this.
- 37:49SPEAKER_06: War is more of a natural state than peace.
- 37:53SPEAKER_06: I guess I never thought about it like that.
- 37:55SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 37:56SPEAKER_06: It's it's it's in human nature to take and you know, take by force if necessary, what you mean?
- 38:03SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 38:04SPEAKER_06: So to to live in peace is actually the anomaly.
- 38:07SPEAKER_06: War is actually more of a natural human state.
- 38:12SPEAKER_06: It's very I mean, it's a very Hobbesian way to look at it, but that's that's if you think about it, it's the truth.
- 38:20SPEAKER_06: What do you think of this sonically?
- 38:22SPEAKER_06: It kind of sucks.
- 38:23SPEAKER_06: It's thin.
- 38:25SPEAKER_06: It's very yeah, it's very thin.
- 38:28SPEAKER_06: I don't know if that's I don't know if that's on purpose or recording for us, and then what you know, I mean there's no there's no juice to it, you know what I mean.
- 38:41SPEAKER_08: It's an okay performance, I guess, but sonically it's just very weak.
- 38:48SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 38:49SPEAKER_06: Especially for a song called War Machine.
- 38:54SPEAKER_06: I mean the video's more badass than that.
- 38:56SPEAKER_06: Yeah, song.
- 39:15SPEAKER_08: You know, the last thing that he did was the last thing he released was um a live from what was the the theater in in London?
- 39:24SPEAKER_08: Uh the Odion?
- 39:26SPEAKER_08: No.
- 39:26SPEAKER_08: Um Hammersmith?
- 39:28SPEAKER_08: Nope.
- 39:29SPEAKER_06: The O2.
- 39:30SPEAKER_08: Uh Royal Albert Hall.
- 39:31SPEAKER_08: Oh, Royal Albert Hall.
- 39:32SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 39:33SPEAKER_08: He did it like he did like a um just a full live album from Royal Albert Hall.
- 39:41SPEAKER_08: And that was the last thing he released, which was like last year.
- 39:43SPEAKER_08: And then he puts out these two songs that were uh covered by KISS.
- 39:48SPEAKER_06: Is he doing a KISS tribute?
- 39:49SPEAKER_08: I don't know what he's doing, but I I suppose I mean you know, I guess maybe he's just trying to Maybe he's like, oh they're done.
- 39:55SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna make it just a tribute to be like, hey, congratulations, guys.
- 39:59SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna do crappy versions of your songs.
- 40:02SPEAKER_08: So it could very well be.
- 40:04SPEAKER_08: I don't know.
- 40:04SPEAKER_08: But uh and I like Brian Adams.
- 40:06SPEAKER_08: I'm I'm a big Brian Adams fan.
- 40:09SPEAKER_08: Um well I'm not a fan of these songs, though.
- 40:11SPEAKER_08: No, I'm not a very good I'm not really a fan of these songs either.
- 40:14SPEAKER_08: Actually, I say I'm a big Brian Adams fan.
- 40:16SPEAKER_08: Um I was a big Brian Adams fan up until uh well I liked Waking Up the Neighbors.
- 40:23SPEAKER_06: Well, probably when he did that song that you couldn't get away from in the 90s, uh from Robin Hood, yeah.
- 40:29SPEAKER_08: I even liked that song.
- 40:30SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I got to I got so sick of it.
- 40:34SPEAKER_06: Now that I hear it, I you know, and I hear it now, I still go into convulsions and stuff.
- 40:39SPEAKER_08: Yeah, no, radio did overplay it for sure.
- 40:41SPEAKER_04: And and and MTV and VH1 I did like the song and and I like that album.
- 40:50SPEAKER_08: Not as good as not as well as the album before it.
- 40:53SPEAKER_08: Um but it was after that album that I kind of lost Brian Adams for a while.
- 40:58SPEAKER_08: Um and and uh the stuff that he put out after that was very Saccharin, you know.
- 41:05SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 41:06SPEAKER_08: Um Into the Fire was my favorite Brian Adams album.
- 41:10SPEAKER_08: And that was the one after Reckless, right?
- 41:12SPEAKER_08: And the one that nobody liked.
- 41:14SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 41:15SPEAKER_08: But I thought it was awesome.
- 41:17SPEAKER_08: It was it was his best album in my opinion.
- 41:19SPEAKER_08: But whatever.
- 41:20SPEAKER_08: You know, every two each is owned, man.
- 41:22SPEAKER_06: I guess.
- 41:23SPEAKER_06: Exactly one or one.
- 41:25SPEAKER_08: Um we are going to um we're not gonna climb the wall of two.
- 41:29SPEAKER_08: Can we play mixtape now?
- 41:31SPEAKER_08: Oh, you want to do mixtape first.
- 41:32SPEAKER_08: Oh yeah, we gotta do mixtape first.
- 41:33SPEAKER_08: Uh, before we take a break.
- 41:34SPEAKER_08: So yeah, let's do that.
- 41:36SPEAKER_04: Yay, mixtape.
- 41:37SPEAKER_08: So the question from last week that we had to answer this week was something about a rocket or something.
- 41:46SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 41:46SPEAKER_06: Holy crap.
- 41:48SPEAKER_06: You've just discovered a rocket pack behind a trapdoor in the old barn behind your grandparents' house.
- 41:54SPEAKER_06: Five minutes of fuel.
- 41:55SPEAKER_06: What song do you play while rocketing across the sky?
- 42:00SPEAKER_08: Alright.
- 42:01SPEAKER_08: Do you want to do Cousin Larry's?
- 42:03SPEAKER_06: I will.
- 42:04SPEAKER_06: Let me get uh let me get my cellular device out here.
- 42:09SPEAKER_08: I'm gonna I'm gonna try and get uh this ready so that uh once you tell me I can find it.
- 42:18SPEAKER_06: What are we doing?
- 42:18SPEAKER_06: Cousin Larry's right?
- 42:20SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 42:20SPEAKER_06: Yeah, okay.
- 42:22SPEAKER_06: Alright.
- 42:23SPEAKER_06: This is what Cousin Larry said.
- 42:25SPEAKER_06: For this week's for this week's mixtape question, I first thought about putting on a rocket pack and what I would be thinking.
- 42:31SPEAKER_06: Oh god, don't let me die.
- 42:33SPEAKER_06: That made me think of Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins.
- 42:36SPEAKER_07: Is that the more sorry?
- 42:39SPEAKER_06: But then I thought about how cool it would be and what song would I be flying to.
- 42:44SPEAKER_06: The theme from Rocky, Gonna Fly Now, has always been a song that pumped me up, so I'm going with that as my choice.
- 42:50SPEAKER_08: Alright.
- 42:51SPEAKER_06: Which I think is a good choice.
- 42:52SPEAKER_08: I do as well.
- 42:54SPEAKER_08: So so when he hold on.
- 42:58SPEAKER_08: So when Cousin Larry gets the the uh rocket on his back.
- 43:16SPEAKER_06: Sure.
- 43:17SPEAKER_06: What's wrong with that?
- 43:18SPEAKER_06: I like it.
- 43:19SPEAKER_06: Yeah, me too.
- 43:21SPEAKER_08: Okay, do you want to go you or me?
- 43:23SPEAKER_06: Yeah, well, it's funny because he actually put my choice in there.
- 43:27SPEAKER_06: Danger zone.
- 43:27SPEAKER_06: Was it danger zone?
- 43:28SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 43:29SPEAKER_06: That's the only thing I can think of.
- 43:30SPEAKER_06: I was like, you know, cuz because as a kid, when that, you know, when Top Gun came out, man.
- 43:35SPEAKER_06: I mean, I was all about, you know, we were all about, you know, joining the Navy and becoming fighter pilots, you know.
- 43:41SPEAKER_07: So yeah.
- 43:43SPEAKER_06: So it only made sense.
- 43:44SPEAKER_06: It was the first it was the first thing that jumped in my head.
- 43:51SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I go with this too.
- 43:53SPEAKER_06: I mean, man.
- 44:22SPEAKER_08: Oh yeah.
- 44:22SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 44:23SPEAKER_08: That's a good choice.
- 44:24SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I thought I thought it was a good choice.
- 44:25SPEAKER_06: It's just funny he mentioned it, so I was like, when I first read it.
- 44:29SPEAKER_06: I was like, oh, you didn't choose it with me.
- 44:31SPEAKER_06: You want mine?
- 44:32SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I do.
- 44:33SPEAKER_07: All right.
- 44:35unknown: Here.
- 44:36SPEAKER_06: Oh.
- 44:38SPEAKER_06: Good choice, man.
- 44:39SPEAKER_06: Final counter.
- 44:40SPEAKER_07: I totally get that.
- 44:41SPEAKER_07: Yeah, so I got a rocket strapped to my back.
- 44:46SPEAKER_07: Come on.
- 44:47SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 45:01SPEAKER_08: So you're going to see when it takes a mum.
- 45:31SPEAKER_06: That's a good choice.
- 45:32SPEAKER_08: Oh yeah.
- 45:33SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 45:33SPEAKER_08: All right.
- 45:34SPEAKER_08: So the three choices are the Rocky theme, gonna fly now.
- 45:37SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 45:37SPEAKER_08: Uh Danger Zone from Kenny Loggins.
- 45:39SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 45:40SPEAKER_08: And Final Countdown from Europe.
- 45:42SPEAKER_08: Final countdown.
- 45:43SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 45:43SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 45:44SPEAKER_06: So our judge has her work cut out for us.
- 45:46SPEAKER_08: She does.
- 45:46SPEAKER_08: Alright.
- 45:47SPEAKER_08: Alright.
- 45:48SPEAKER_08: So what is So no?
- 45:50SPEAKER_06: We gotta do the winner from last week.
- 45:51SPEAKER_06: Oh, that's right.
- 45:52SPEAKER_06: So let me uh pull that up.
- 45:55SPEAKER_06: I always get that wrong.
- 45:57SPEAKER_06: Alrighty.
- 46:02SPEAKER_08: I don't even remember what last week's was.
- 46:04SPEAKER_06: Uh it was the uh slow motion um Oh gunfight.
- 46:09SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 46:10SPEAKER_06: So this is what our lovely and talented judge said.
- 46:14SPEAKER_06: This one was super tough.
- 46:15SPEAKER_06: All three songs would fit perfectly for a slow motion gunfight in different time frames.
- 46:21SPEAKER_06: Jukebox Hero is definitely 21st century fight scene worthy.
- 46:25SPEAKER_06: The ecstasy of gold is very western style, and of course, who doesn't love a good Clint Eastwood movie?
- 46:32SPEAKER_06: I actually just finished reading the book We Were Soldiers Once and Young.
- 46:35SPEAKER_06: I didn't know they made a movie about those events.
- 46:38SPEAKER_06: The song couldn't have been more perfect for those brutal battles.
- 46:40SPEAKER_06: I had to go with the bagpipes, though.
- 46:42SPEAKER_06: The words of the song are moving, replaying the scenes in the book while listening to the song to that song.
- 46:47SPEAKER_06: Very moving, very fitting.
- 46:50SPEAKER_06: And I love bagpipes.
- 46:51SPEAKER_06: Sergeant Mackenzie for the win.
- 46:52SPEAKER_06: There you go.
- 46:53SPEAKER_08: So congratulations, Doug.
- 46:55SPEAKER_08: Uh I still haven't seen that movie.
- 46:57SPEAKER_08: I want to find, you know, a couple hours here and there to watch it.
- 47:01SPEAKER_06: But I highly recommend it.
- 47:02SPEAKER_08: I will tell you, because I didn't think of that.
- 47:04SPEAKER_08: I had so my so after school today, my wife took my daughter to soccer while the boys were at their own soccer uh you know practice.
- 47:13SPEAKER_08: And so I was home by myself.
- 47:16SPEAKER_08: And I'm not gonna I wasn't gonna say anything, I don't know, maybe I'm not gonna say anything because my kids might listen to but when my daughter was home, she gave me her network.
- 47:36SPEAKER_08: The only reason I wanted it was because I wanted to see the new.
- 48:02SPEAKER_08: And the neutron dances in the movie.
- 48:04SPEAKER_08: And you know, rehash.
- 48:09SPEAKER_08: Um it's it's a little predictable.
- 48:16SPEAKER_08: Um some funny things.
- 48:19SPEAKER_08: You know, I mean it's it's Eddie Murphy.
- 48:22SPEAKER_08: Um but so far I could have gone without seeing it.
- 48:26SPEAKER_08: So far.
- 48:27SPEAKER_08: So far.
- 48:29SPEAKER_08: So we'll see how it ends.
- 48:30SPEAKER_08: Like I said, there's about an hour left.
- 48:32SPEAKER_08: But I mean, like the same the same scenarios.
- 48:37SPEAKER_08: Like he goes into a place and talks to a major D.
- 48:42SPEAKER_08: You know, he he um I don't know.
- 48:48SPEAKER_08: I mean, but the same setups.
- 48:50SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 48:51SPEAKER_06: You know, it's like it worked once like the the the new coming to America, exactly.
- 48:56SPEAKER_06: It was the same as a there's no new ideas coming out.
- 48:59SPEAKER_06: It's the same idea.
- 49:00SPEAKER_08: I hate to say I hate to say it, man, but the movie industry is and I get what they're doing because the people that loved Beverly Hills Comp, they want that type of thing again.
- 49:10SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 49:11SPEAKER_08: But we don't want the same thing.
- 49:12SPEAKER_08: We don't want the same thing.
- 49:13SPEAKER_08: Beverly Hills Comp 2 was good.
- 49:15SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it was pretty good.
- 49:16SPEAKER_08: Beverly Hills Comp 3 stunk.
- 49:17SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it was terrible.
- 49:18SPEAKER_08: It was an awful movie.
- 49:19SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 49:19SPEAKER_08: And so I was hoping that this one would kind of they would redeem themselves.
- 49:23SPEAKER_08: So far they have to a certain extent, but it's like rehashing the first movie.
- 49:27SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 49:27SPEAKER_08: Um Kevin Bacon's in it.
- 49:31SPEAKER_08: Oh, really?
- 49:32SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 49:32SPEAKER_08: That was cool.
- 49:33SPEAKER_08: Um I'm not giving anything away by you know, you know, Jeffrey, Paul Riser.
- 49:39SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 49:39SPEAKER_08: He's the chief now.
- 49:40SPEAKER_08: Oh, really?
- 49:41SPEAKER_08: That's funny.
- 49:42SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 49:43SPEAKER_06: So yeah.
- 49:45SPEAKER_06: This is not my locker.
- 49:48SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 49:48SPEAKER_08: So uh but yeah, I mean it's it's kind of neat to see things like that.
- 49:52SPEAKER_08: It's like, oh Jeffrey's the chief, yeah, you know, and um or or yeah, he's the chief of police in Detroit.
- 49:59SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 49:59SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 50:00SPEAKER_08: And there's other there's other kind of things that tie it all together.
- 50:03SPEAKER_08: I'm not gonna give it away, but um yeah, I'm I'm about an hour into it maybe, and and and it's just okay.
- 50:10SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 50:10SPEAKER_08: It's it's not bad, but it's it's just okay.
- 50:13SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 50:14SPEAKER_08: Not all you thought it would be.
- 50:15SPEAKER_08: Not all I thought it would be.
- 50:16SPEAKER_08: I was hoping for more.
- 50:17SPEAKER_08: I understand.
- 50:18SPEAKER_08: Um but I suppose, I mean, Eddie Murphy's how old now?
- 50:23SPEAKER_08: It's gotta be in the 70s.
- 50:24SPEAKER_08: Is he close to 70?
- 50:25SPEAKER_08: It's gotta be.
- 50:26SPEAKER_08: Oh no.
- 50:28SPEAKER_08: Yeah, he probably is.
- 50:29SPEAKER_06: I mean, because he was I mean, he was in Saturday Night Live in the 70s, early 80s.
- 50:33SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 50:35SPEAKER_08: He is 63.
- 50:41SPEAKER_06: Oh, okay.
- 50:42SPEAKER_06: So he's not as old.
- 50:43SPEAKER_06: He's not that bad.
- 50:44SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 50:45SPEAKER_08: He's not that bad.
- 50:46SPEAKER_06: Well, I'm 52, so he's only like 11 years older than I am.
- 50:49SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
- 50:49SPEAKER_07: Yeah, exactly.
- 50:50SPEAKER_07: Okay, so we're gonna come back.
- 50:52SPEAKER_06: No, no, no, we gotta do the new the new question, right?
- 50:56SPEAKER_06: Sorry, you just you just I don't understand, man.
- 50:59SPEAKER_06: I don't either.
- 51:00SPEAKER_06: Oh, this is a good one.
- 51:02SPEAKER_06: This is a good one.
- 51:03SPEAKER_08: I forgot there's three parts.
- 51:04SPEAKER_08: Three parts to mixtape.
- 51:05SPEAKER_06: Yeah, mixtape is a is a complicated game.
- 51:08SPEAKER_06: I mean, there's like chess and backgammon and mixtape.
- 51:13SPEAKER_06: Batgammon?
- 51:15SPEAKER_06: I can think of something.
- 51:16SPEAKER_06: You're right, that's really difficult.
- 51:18SPEAKER_06: I don't even know how to play it, so it must be.
- 51:20SPEAKER_06: Okay, so here we go.
- 51:22SPEAKER_06: The question for next week is best song for speeding down the Pacific Coast Highway at sunset.

- 54:10SPEAKER_06: I bet, you know, I bet Dr.
- 54:12SPEAKER_06: Seuss was like, man, that's so good.
- 54:13SPEAKER_06: I wish I thought of it.
- 54:15SPEAKER_06: Uh okay.
- 54:16SPEAKER_06: So here, there, and everywhere from the revolver album.
- 54:20SPEAKER_06: Oh.
- 54:21SPEAKER_06: That's not it.
- 54:22SPEAKER_06: That's not it.
- 54:23SPEAKER_06: That's that's still final countdown.
- 54:25SPEAKER_06: You can't fool.
- 54:26SPEAKER_06: Oh, there we go.
- 54:27SPEAKER_06: That's better.
- 54:28SPEAKER_06: That's a pretty song.
- 54:29SPEAKER_06: It's a pretty song.
- 54:30SPEAKER_06: I just want to listen to it for a second.
- 54:37SPEAKER_03: Making its day of the year.
- 54:42SPEAKER_06: Alright, read it.
- 54:43SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 54:44SPEAKER_06: With things starting to look up again in his romance with Jane Asher, Paul wrote what is widely regarded as his greatest love song.
- 54:53SPEAKER_06: Wanting to work with a structural challenge, he constructed each verse of the song around the three adverbs in the title.
- 55:00SPEAKER_06: When he recorded it, he imagined the light voice of Marianne Faithful.
- 55:05SPEAKER_06: Paul wrote here, there, and everywhere in June 1966 while sitting by John's outdoor pool.
- 55:11SPEAKER_06: He had heard the Beach Boys' newly released Pet Sounds, which impressed him with its musical complexity and innovative vocal arrangements.
- 55:20SPEAKER_06: Paul was particularly taken with the shimmering quality of God only knows and wanted something which captured the same mood.
- 55:28SPEAKER_07: That's it?
- 55:29SPEAKER_06: That's it?
- 55:31SPEAKER_08: Did you know that this is Sir Paul McCartney's favorite song he's ever written?
- 55:34SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 55:34SPEAKER_06: I think we talked about that.
- 55:35SPEAKER_08: Yeah, we did.
- 55:38SPEAKER_06: It is a wonderful song.
- 55:41SPEAKER_03: Each one gives me a side.
- 55:44SPEAKER_08: Structurally.
- 55:45SPEAKER_08: I mean, it's just melodically.
- 55:46SPEAKER_08: It's it's pretty great.
- 55:54SPEAKER_03: I want her everywhere.
- 55:57SPEAKER_06: Modulation.
- 55:58SPEAKER_03: And if she's beside me, I'm not sure.
- 56:00SPEAKER_06: Do you ever think there was a point he was like, I can never do any better than this song?
- 56:04SPEAKER_03: But to love bears to me.
- 56:07SPEAKER_06: But he's probably not.
- 56:08SPEAKER_06: But he didn't.
- 56:08SPEAKER_06: I mean he did, but you know, but you know, at the time, you're probably he's probably like, Man, I can never do a better song than this one.
- 56:15SPEAKER_06: I bet he did that.
- 56:16SPEAKER_08: But he but he worked toward it, I'm sure.
- 56:18SPEAKER_06: Well, I'm sure.
- 56:19SPEAKER_06: I need to write a song better than hearing.
- 56:21SPEAKER_06: But I mean, I mean I bet he was just like for a second.
- 56:24SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 56:24SPEAKER_06: After he got it finished, he's like, I think I've done a better song.
- 56:28SPEAKER_06: The best song I've ever written.
- 56:33unknown: And then we will.
- 56:47SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it is crazy.
- 56:48SPEAKER_06: There's people in 2024 that can't even you know play more than three chords.
- 56:52SPEAKER_06: This is true.
- 56:53SPEAKER_08: And they're and they're like superstars.
- 56:55SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
- 56:56SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 56:56SPEAKER_06: One of them's the eighth greatest guitar player in the last two decades.
- 57:02SPEAKER_06: I didn't say who it was.
- 57:04SPEAKER_06: You're gonna have to go back in her catalog and figure out who I'm talking about.
- 57:07SPEAKER_08: Her initials are TF.
- 57:09SPEAKER_08: I don't know if they gave it away or not.
- 57:11SPEAKER_08: Uh alright, so on this date, August 27th, 1990, tragedy struck.
- 57:20SPEAKER_08: Um was it Colorado?
- 57:23SPEAKER_06: Uh yeah.
- 57:24SPEAKER_08: I think they were like an open-air concert in Colorado.
- 57:27SPEAKER_06: Yeah, because they crashed into a ski hill.
- 57:28SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it wasn't Red Rocks.
- 57:30SPEAKER_06: No, it wasn't Red Rock.
- 57:31SPEAKER_08: But it was around it was like that type of so a lot of Clapton's band, was it Clapton's band?
- 57:38SPEAKER_08: Some members of Clapton's band were in there.
- 57:41SPEAKER_08: And then Stevie Ray.
- 57:42SPEAKER_08: Because everybody else decided that they were gonna take the bus.
- 57:46SPEAKER_08: Yeah, they were gonna stick around and stick around or take the bus or And I think he had another show to do it.
- 57:52SPEAKER_06: That's why he had to get out of there.
- 57:53SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 57:56SPEAKER_08: This, of course, is in dedication to his love at the time.
- 58:00SPEAKER_08: Her name was Lenny.
- 58:02SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 58:04SPEAKER_08: This is an instrumental, but I just if you study guitar, you just have to marvel at and it's there's something that Joko said to me one time that he liked, and I think we've talked about this.
- 58:19SPEAKER_08: He said I always had good touch.
- 58:21SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 58:22SPEAKER_08: And that's just that's that's like a feel.
- 58:24SPEAKER_08: That's a feel thing.
- 58:25SPEAKER_08: It's not necessarily technical, it's just it's it's uh you have a good Well it's it's rooted in emotion, it's not it's not a it's not a it's not a like, oh I have to play a C sharp nine here, you know what I mean?
- 58:40SPEAKER_06: It's just it's just like this sounds good.
- 58:42SPEAKER_08: And if you want just a smoger sport of touch and feel, it's Stevie Ray Bon.
- 58:50SPEAKER_08: Oh yeah.
- 58:50SPEAKER_08: Even in his tender moments like this, yeah.
- 58:53SPEAKER_08: I mean Do you have you want one you want to hear?
- 59:04SPEAKER_06: Because I Well, I just I've always loved his version of Voodoo Chow.
- 59:10SPEAKER_06: Anyway, but uh I'm not sure this is the same one.
- 59:18SPEAKER_08: This is a couple versions.
- 59:20SPEAKER_06: Well, I just like when I posted this picture of him, I the quote I love I don't play with a lot of finesse.
- 59:27SPEAKER_06: I usually play like I'm breaking out of jail.
- 59:30SPEAKER_08: Excuse me, you know.
- 59:32SPEAKER_08: Pretty accurate.
- 59:32SPEAKER_08: Pretty accurate.
- 59:35SPEAKER_08: And he had a kindred spirit with Jimi Hendrix.
- 59:39SPEAKER_08: I mean, there was a lot of uh similarities in their playing.
- 59:42SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_06: I just gave the goose phone.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_08: I know, I know.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_08: So what's the first when's the first time or what's the first song you ever heard from Stevie Ray Von?
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_08: Was it this?
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_06: I don't remember where it was.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_06: I just remember hearing, I was like, because I knew it was Jimi Hendrix, and I was like, but that's not Jimi Hendrix.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_06: You know, and then I was like, oh that's Stevie Ray Vaughn.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_08: I'm like, ooh, yeah, surprisingly, the first song I heard from Stevie Ray, and knew it was Stevie Ray Vaughn, was later in his recording career.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_08: Uh I think it was from Instead, it was Crossfire.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_08: Oh yeah.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_06: That was the first that was a huge song.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_08: Yeah, that was the first one I heard.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_08: Um and of course, then once you know you get into them, you go back and listen to everything.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_08: One that's very popular.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_08: Most most bands, what did they say?
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_06: Oh, this one they're gonna go, yeah.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_06: Not to be confused with Marvin Games Pride and Joy.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_06: Right, exactly.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_08: So an album came out in 1991, the year obviously the year after he died, which was a collection of it wasn't beast eyes, but it was like stuff that he hadn't put out yet.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_08: Um and it was it's still one of my favorite Stevie albums.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_08: Uh it's called This Guy is crying.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_08: But it's got it's got uh like this one, Empty Arms.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_08: Now keep in mind in those early days, there was no keyboard player to hold down the rhythm while he played lead.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_08: He did everything.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_08: Yeah, you can hear it right here.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_08: This is just him in double trouble.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_08: This is just guitar, bass, and drums.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_08: That's it.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_08: And it seems still full.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, da da da da da da da da.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_02: Do it wrong to run a bit.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_08: Was it is Vulu Shaw is that your favorite as well?
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_06: It's my favorite, but I mean there's so many.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_06: I mean like Texas Flood is so great.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_06: Um, what oh was it?
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I'm not just where a lot of people heard Stevie Ray the first time and may not have known it was on David Bowie's song, Let's Dance.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_08: Yeah, that was all Stevie Ray playing guitar.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_08: I think he one of the first things he did to kind of make a name for himself was he opened for Mick Jagger on tour for a while.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_08: How far he's bending those notes.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_06: And remember those strings are just Well, when you watch him play, I mean, these are basically tree trunks he's playing.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_06: And he's bending them halfway, three quarters up the fretboard.
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_08: Oh, yeah.
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_08: You know what I mean?
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_08: And you want to see something cool.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_08: I know you've seen this.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_08: If you uh want to see something cool from Steve Ray Vaughn, go to YouTube and and type in Steve Aray Vaughn string change.
- 1:04:39SPEAKER_06: Yes, it's a myth.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_08: That is it's so awesome to watch.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_08: It's seamless.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_06: It is seamless.
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_06: It doesn't miss a beat.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_08: Doesn't miss a beat.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_06: It doesn't miss a note.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_08: So he's he's in the middle of a s uh song playing a guitar solo, actually, and the string breaks, and so as he comes back into the verse and is singing, he takes his guitar off, unplugs it, his guitar tech comes up, gives him a new guitar, plugs it in, and does just start singing right back in.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_08: Doesn't miss a beat.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_08: It's amazing to watch.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_06: Awesome.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_06: I think he was on uh Austin City Limits.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_06: I think that's what it was, yeah.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_06: Yeah, only three.
- 1:05:23SPEAKER_06: I was actually watching PBS.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_06: Uh this was a while ago.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_06: Uh they were showing um it was Austin City Limits, but they were showing Stevie's first time on Austin City Limits.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_06: And then they played the very last time.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_08: Oh wow.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_06: The like back to back.
- 1:05:40SPEAKER_06: It was just it was just kind of cool to see.
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_06: Because the first, you know, he I mean he was an amazing play, but he didn't really interact with the audience that much.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_06: He was very kind of like thank you.
- 1:05:53SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:05:53SPEAKER_06: Kind of like kind of like Todd Park Moore.
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 1:05:56SPEAKER_06: Like, because we've met him a couple times, and he's completely different on.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_06: He's shy, yeah.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_06: He's very shy.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_06: And this is how Stevie Ray, but when they when they faded into the last performance, I mean he was like a capar.
- 1:06:08SPEAKER_06: On fire.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_06: Yeah, he was like he was with the audience, he was interacting.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_06: I think probably still and playing even better, if that's even possible.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_08: I think probably, if I'm not mistaken, so this first performance that you're talking about was just him in double trouble.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_08: Right?
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_08: Just bass guitar and drops.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and then the second time.
- 1:06:25SPEAKER_08: He had Reese Minans on keyboards.
- 1:06:27SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_08: And that fills out the sound.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:06:32SPEAKER_08: Yeah, he was he was on the the right trajectory.
- 1:06:35SPEAKER_08: I mean, he was Oh yeah.
- 1:06:36SPEAKER_06: I mean, he would have been just massive.
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_08: Oh, yeah.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_06: Massive.
- 1:06:40SPEAKER_08: Well, I mean, okay, here's a that's a good uh hypothetical or or just kind of a a neat question.
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_08: He's massive now.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_08: I mean, his leg so if he you do you think do you think if he hadn't have passed in a helicopter crash, he would be as big today as he is now?
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_08: He'd be bigger.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_08: You think so?
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_06: Because he'd be making more music and he'd be out and more people and then once the internet hit, more people would know him.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_06: You know what I mean?
- 1:07:13SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:07:14SPEAKER_08: So I mean, like, you got people like well, Kenny Wayne Shepherd.
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_08: Okay, Kenny Wayne Shepherd is a is a a great artist in his own right.
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:07:23SPEAKER_08: Stevie Ray Von clone.
- 1:07:24unknown: Oh yeah.
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_08: I mean he's he's But he's not Stevie Ray Von.
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_08: No, no, no.
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_08: But he is admittedly John Mayer.
- 1:07:31SPEAKER_08: Is huge Stevie Ravon.
- 1:07:33SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:07:33SPEAKER_08: You know, and he can play like Stevie Ray.
- 1:07:36SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:37SPEAKER_08: But I j I just saw a thing uh this morning, I think.
- 1:07:41SPEAKER_08: Eric Clapton was talking about John Mayer.
- 1:07:45SPEAKER_08: And how what an amazing guitar player he is.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_06: He really is.
- 1:07:50SPEAKER_08: Yeah, he is.
- 1:07:51SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_08: Um anyway.
- 1:07:53SPEAKER_08: I just threw that up.
- 1:07:54SPEAKER_06: You know, from a white boy from Connecticut.
- 1:07:56SPEAKER_06: I mean, he really does pretty well.
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_06: Oh yeah.
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_06: You know?
- 1:07:58SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:07:58SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:07:59SPEAKER_08: Uh alright, so I like that uh uh change of the What's the name of that song?
- 1:08:06SPEAKER_06: Changes?
- 1:08:06SPEAKER_06: No.
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_06: Uh Change in the Weather or Oh, couldn't Stand the Weather?
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_06: Couldn't Stand the Weather.
- 1:08:10SPEAKER_06: That is that is such a cool riff, man.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_06: Have you got that?
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_06: Oh, I do.
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_08: People have been trying to get his tone forever.
- 1:08:31SPEAKER_08: You're not gonna do it.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_08: You're not gonna do it.
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_04: There's a pedal that supposedly is Oh, it's not there yet.
- 1:08:54SPEAKER_07: Not yet.
- 1:09:14SPEAKER_08: I think it was in step that was the record that got me introduced to Stevie.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_08: That had Crossfire, it had tight rope.
- 1:09:22SPEAKER_06: Cr both those songs are freaking banging.
- 1:09:25SPEAKER_06: Oh yeah.
- 1:09:25SPEAKER_06: You know what I mean?
- 1:09:26SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:09:27SPEAKER_06: I mean, we're when you listen to Crossfire, you can't help but get like pumped.
- 1:09:31SPEAKER_08: Oh yeah.
- 1:09:32SPEAKER_08: You know what I mean?
- 1:09:32SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:09:33SPEAKER_08: That's one we should do as the syndicate.
- 1:09:34SPEAKER_08: That's got a big horn section, doesn't it?
- 1:09:36SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:09:36SPEAKER_08: Yeah, we should.
- 1:09:36SPEAKER_08: Well play it.
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_08: You got it, Drew?
- 1:09:38SPEAKER_08: I don't think I have it on this one.
- 1:09:40SPEAKER_08: Hold on.
- 1:09:40SPEAKER_08: That doesn't mean I can't play it because we have the technology.
- 1:09:43SPEAKER_06: I was about to say.
- 1:09:44SPEAKER_06: We got we got inter interwebs.
- 1:09:56SPEAKER_06: There's the video right there.
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_08: Um I think we could do this song.
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_08: I think this would be fun.
- 1:10:08SPEAKER_06: Sendican do this?
- 1:10:09SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I think so.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_08: Because it's uh there's tons of horns in it.
- 1:10:13SPEAKER_06: If I yeah, if I remember right, yeah.
- 1:10:17SPEAKER_07: That's not it.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_07: His name's not oh it's Stevie, not Steven.
- 1:10:22SPEAKER_07: Hold on, that's a totally different thing.
- 1:10:24SPEAKER_07: What do you told you?
- 1:10:25SPEAKER_08: I was like, what is this?
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_08: Steven Crossfire.
- 1:10:29SPEAKER_08: There it is.
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_08: There are horns, aren't they?
- 1:10:44SPEAKER_08: I thought there were.
- 1:11:12SPEAKER_08: Yeah, the chorus.
- 1:11:13SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I think you're right.
- 1:11:23SPEAKER_06: I know Yeah, right there.
- 1:11:27SPEAKER_06: I know what?
- 1:11:32SPEAKER_06: Just like a swell.
- 1:11:33SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:11:36SPEAKER_06: I guarantee you, if Stevie was still alive, he'd still be playing that freaking guitar.
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_06: I bet.
- 1:11:43SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 1:11:44SPEAKER_06: I mean it was he It was it was not about flash, it was about It was about the tone, it was about the music.
- 1:11:52SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 1:11:53SPEAKER_06: And he got it out of that guitar.
- 1:11:55SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 1:11:56SPEAKER_06: And he would never give that guitar up.
- 1:11:59SPEAKER_06: I mean, it was beat to crap.
- 1:12:01SPEAKER_06: I mean you every time you see it, you're like, because you used to like, yeah, list those horns.
- 1:12:06SPEAKER_08: Well, I think I think uh Fender started making I think Stevie Ray was one of the reasons Fender started making distressed models.
- 1:12:16SPEAKER_08: You know, like that that looked like they were they were worn.
- 1:12:18SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:12:19SPEAKER_08: Because that's what he played.
- 1:12:20SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:12:21SPEAKER_08: So but his his was really...
- 1:12:24SPEAKER_06: authentic.
- 1:12:25SPEAKER_06: You know what I mean?
- 1:12:27SPEAKER_06: I mean that's you don't get that.
- 1:12:30SPEAKER_06: That's from hours and hours and hours and hours and hours of playing and gigs and everything.
- 1:12:36SPEAKER_06: I mean, that's just a work of art in itself, that guitar.
- 1:12:52SPEAKER_06: John would get on board with this because it's a great bass one, right?
- 1:13:00SPEAKER_06: I'm definitely on board with this.
- 1:13:02SPEAKER_06: Heck yeah, man.
- 1:13:03SPEAKER_06: Heck yeah.
- 1:13:05SPEAKER_06: Captain Morton, take notes.
- 1:13:07SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I love that.
- 1:13:17SPEAKER_08: And you gotta sing it.
- 1:13:18SPEAKER_08: You'd be you'd be singing it.
- 1:13:19SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I'm Anthony.
- 1:13:21SPEAKER_06: I love you, brother, but you're not having this one.
- 1:13:23SPEAKER_06: I'm taking it.
- 1:13:24SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 1:13:26SPEAKER_08: For sure.
- 1:13:27SPEAKER_08: So, um 34 years ago.
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_06: Can't believe it, man.
- 1:13:31SPEAKER_08: Today, uh, we lost Stevie Ray Vaughn, a legend.
- 1:13:36SPEAKER_06: Um I like that video because you dressed like Clint Eastwood.
- 1:13:39SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_06: The man with the man with no name trilogy.
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_06: Yeah, you know, the poncho and the hat.
- 1:13:45SPEAKER_06: I just love it.
- 1:13:45SPEAKER_08: I just love the look.
- 1:13:46SPEAKER_08: And there's there's there's still stuff coming out.
- 1:13:48SPEAKER_08: I mean, they're still releasing Stevie Ray stuff.
- 1:13:51SPEAKER_08: Not lately, but I mean, um they're always finding uh there's stuff all over the place.
- 1:13:57SPEAKER_08: Probably, you know.
- 1:13:58SPEAKER_06: Um I mean I bought I bought I told you about that box that I bought from Stevie Ray.
- 1:14:02SPEAKER_06: I mean like one album is just like radio like early concerts that were broadcast over the radio.
- 1:14:09SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 1:14:09SPEAKER_06: And they were still amazing.
- 1:14:11SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:14:11SPEAKER_06: You know, and he was just you know, he was just starting out.
- 1:14:14SPEAKER_06: Yeah, you know, he wasn't legendary yet.
- 1:14:16SPEAKER_08: I've got some uh I I didn't tell you this, but I I've got some cuts that we're gonna open the podcast with and close the podcast with from Stevie Ray.
- 1:14:24SPEAKER_08: Just uh him talking.
- 1:14:27SPEAKER_08: So those what you hear at the end of the podcast and what you heard at the beginning of the podcast, that was Stevie Ray talking.
- 1:14:33SPEAKER_08: So there you go.
- 1:14:34SPEAKER_08: Uh okay, so that's episode 209.
- 1:14:37SPEAKER_08: Uh in the book.
- 1:14:38SPEAKER_08: 209.
- 1:14:39SPEAKER_08: I think it was 209.
- 1:14:40SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_08: Pretty sure it was 209.
- 1:14:45SPEAKER_06: I believe.
- 1:14:46SPEAKER_06: I mean, if it was, I believe it would.
- 1:14:48SPEAKER_06: I just can't believe it.
- 1:14:49SPEAKER_06: I believe it.
- 1:14:52SPEAKER_08: I'm pretty sure it was.
- 1:14:55SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 1:14:57SPEAKER_07: We'll do that.
- 1:14:59SPEAKER_07: Thanks, computer.
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_07: Let's see.
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_07: Yeah, 209.
- 1:15:01SPEAKER_07: Okay, good.
- 1:15:02SPEAKER_07: 209.
