- 0:03Speaker 1: Boublay Camp show man. We got a special guest in here.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Been trying to get this guy in here for a
- 0:06Speaker 1: very long time. Black is in the building. Welcome, Welcome.
- 0:11Speaker 1: It's so crazy because I saw the single cover for
- 0:15Speaker 1: your new record and your daughter's on there. Yep. And
- 0:20Speaker 1: is this the dark because in twenty sixteen, your debut
- 0:23Speaker 1: project's one of my favorite albums. Ever. So when you
- 0:26Speaker 1: were saying I got a baby on the way, I
- 0:27Speaker 1: think about it every day. I do this.
- 0:29Speaker 2: That's the baby, same baby, Yep, I am yep, how
- 0:32Speaker 2: many years later? Nine years old?
- 0:33Speaker 1: Now? Crazy?
- 0:35Speaker 2: Yes, it is crazy. It's crazy to even see it
- 0:36Speaker 2: every day, like you never get used to it. And
- 0:38Speaker 2: ever like, every time I look at her, I'm like,
- 0:40Speaker 2: you are that baby?
- 0:42Speaker 1: Yeah? Is it kind of surreal to think back like
- 0:45Speaker 1: we're approaching it's been ten years since that album.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Yeah, it has been about a decade since everything, So like
- 0:50Speaker 2: as we have been getting closer to the date this year,
- 0:53Speaker 2: I think the whole year has been just like I've
- 0:55Speaker 2: been reflecting because that time and this time are too
- 0:58Speaker 2: completely different, for sure.
- 1:00Speaker 1: One hundred percent. Man. And it's kind of crazy too,
- 1:03Speaker 1: because if you think all the way back then, Like
- 1:05Speaker 1: you're probably the last artist. I feel like I kind
- 1:07Speaker 1: of discovered through SoundCloud. It's like the wave of I guess,
- 1:13Speaker 1: like everyone kind of getting hip to certain artists on SoundCloud.
- 1:15Speaker 1: But I feel like, for me personally, my personal experience,
- 1:17Speaker 1: you're the last guy.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Like, yeah, I think that was like twenty sixteen might
- 1:20Speaker 2: be like the end or close to the end of
- 1:22Speaker 2: that era as far as just like new music discovery
- 1:25Speaker 2: on SoundCloud. Apple music was just like starting to pop,
- 1:29Speaker 2: and yeah, I feel like that was the end of
- 1:32Speaker 2: an era in the beginning of like where we are
- 1:34Speaker 2: right now streaming air Yeah.
- 1:35Speaker 1: And it's it's just been so dope to see like
- 1:37Speaker 1: your guys' whole movement out of Atlanta and like turn
- 1:41Speaker 1: into just so many suit I mean, look, kid's got
- 1:43Speaker 1: his own cereal.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, that's my brother, that's my guy for real.
- 1:49Speaker 1: But it's got to be crazy, man, Like you do
- 1:51Speaker 1: you ever reflect just over the last decade, like just
- 1:53Speaker 1: how far you've came and just you know where you
- 1:55Speaker 1: are now because you're kind of you're one of them
- 1:57Speaker 1: guys man, And then you you jump in and out
- 2:00Speaker 1: of the game when you're ready because you're otherwise.
- 2:02Speaker 2: I feel like you're very deal the way yeah, to
- 2:04Speaker 2: myself for a reason, but like, honestly, bro, like those
- 2:08Speaker 2: days they seemed like they were yesterday. Like me and
- 2:11Speaker 2: Jid at one point, I was sleeping on his couch
- 2:13Speaker 2: and working at his house whenever he would go to work.
- 2:16Speaker 1: The Spillage Village Origin days.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, he was delivering pieces and doing that, and
- 2:21Speaker 2: I was just had to create recording demos like twenty
- 2:23Speaker 2: four seven and before that, me and Mariva Maariva's in credit, yeah,
- 2:27Speaker 2: me and India Sean Me and you know Rory was
- 2:33Speaker 2: like lvrn's first artist.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Oh g yeah, the Freshman cover yep, kind of tailing
- 2:38Speaker 1: blog era guy too.
- 2:40Speaker 2: I was just like figuring out my way around that time.
- 2:42Speaker 2: That was a good time to also just like not
- 2:44Speaker 2: be on the scene and just be a student. So
- 2:46Speaker 2: it was like I got to see a lot of
- 2:48Speaker 2: my favorite folks and a lot of my peers just
- 2:50Speaker 2: like come up, do the right thing, say the wrong thing,
- 2:53Speaker 2: and I'm just like taking notes on like how the
- 2:56Speaker 2: game is and like how I want to present myself.
- 2:58Speaker 2: And by the time we were ready to go in
- 2:59Speaker 2: twenty six team, I think that was when I finally
- 3:01Speaker 2: felt like I found my voice, like I wrapped my
- 3:04Speaker 2: whole entire life. But twenty sixteen was a moment when
- 3:06Speaker 2: I was just like, I think I'm ready to release
- 3:07Speaker 2: a song like officially.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Yeah, because it's funny because if you listen to that
- 3:10Speaker 1: first album, it's like people can know you could rap.
- 3:13Speaker 1: I listened to that album, but it was not a
- 3:14Speaker 1: rap album. Yeah, yeah, it was a very personal album though.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, incredible man, thank you. The new album is
- 3:21Speaker 1: called Love is the New Gangster.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Explain, Oh, I think it's just my easy way of
- 3:27Speaker 2: saying that, like love, love is the cool thing to promote.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Like I grew up in an area where I could
- 3:33Speaker 2: have chose to do like the drug route, the gang route.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Yeah I could have.
- 3:40Speaker 2: I mean, and I had my moments when I just
- 3:42Speaker 2: like wasn't on the right path. But as I've gotten older,
- 3:45Speaker 2: I've just been able to see what actually means the
- 3:47Speaker 2: most to me. And you know, when you're younger, you're
- 3:49Speaker 2: trying to figure out how to fit in, You're trying
- 3:50Speaker 2: to figure out how to stay safe, You're trying to
- 3:52Speaker 2: figure out how to provide, and the setting isn't always
- 3:56Speaker 2: like it doesn't always like accompany you in the best
- 3:59Speaker 2: way to like do the right thing. So by the
- 4:02Speaker 2: time I was able to get myself, you know, have
- 4:03Speaker 2: my own money and figure out my own thing, I
- 4:05Speaker 2: was just like, I see, I see what's cool now,
- 4:06Speaker 2: Like I see, I see what gangster really is. It's
- 4:08Speaker 2: like taking care of your family and being an honest
- 4:10Speaker 2: person and looking out for folks like when you can
- 4:13Speaker 2: look out for them, and doing good business, like all
- 4:17Speaker 2: of the stuff that I didn't really have a mentor
- 4:19Speaker 2: around me to talk about and I have to figure
- 4:22Speaker 2: out through trial and errors, Like Okay, now for the
- 4:24Speaker 2: people who listen to me and the people who know me,
- 4:25Speaker 2: I get an opportunity to teach them.
- 4:27Speaker 1: And yeah, it's also like I feel like we need
- 4:30Speaker 1: a lot of love in the world right now for sure.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Where we can't w where we can get it, you
- 4:34Speaker 1: gotta kind of get it.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Right for sure for sure. And that's why I'd be
- 4:37Speaker 2: just kind of to myself, like at the crib for
- 4:39Speaker 2: the most part when I'm not on tour or not
- 4:41Speaker 2: dropping the album, Like I get my inspiration from the house.
- 4:44Speaker 2: So if my relationship is good, if my kids are good,
- 4:47Speaker 2: if we are out experiencing life and like the ways
- 4:50Speaker 2: that music has been able to provide for me. Then
- 4:52Speaker 2: like that's my version of like gangster, Like I get
- 4:56Speaker 2: to do this ill dreamed of and I get to
- 4:58Speaker 2: do it in a way that's like healthy and you know,
- 5:00Speaker 2: just it's good for us.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Well, it's almost like two, like you have to find
- 5:03Speaker 1: like once you have certain levels of success come right,
- 5:05Speaker 1: Like you kind of have to find your pockets of
- 5:07Speaker 1: inspiration in any places.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Yeah, it's difficult because.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Because like the bills are paid now, you know what
- 5:11Speaker 1: I'm saying. So it's like I got all right, Well,
- 5:14Speaker 1: you're a creative vessel, so it's like you got to
- 5:16Speaker 1: draw from everything now, you know. Yeah.
- 5:18Speaker 2: And then what I noticed too is as my career
- 5:20Speaker 2: moved on, like I had less to really complain about
- 5:24Speaker 2: unless it was self inflicted. So it's like if you're
- 5:26Speaker 2: still dealing with like the same relationship problems, if you're
- 5:29Speaker 2: still dealing with communication issues, if you still are facing
- 5:34Speaker 2: like the same that you are facing however many years ago,
- 5:36Speaker 2: like then you aren't progressing. So I just realized it
- 5:39Speaker 2: was time to grow up. Really, that's it. Yeah, if
- 5:42Speaker 2: you I don't need to be free black, you know,
- 5:44Speaker 2: for ten years later, like when you check in to
- 5:46Speaker 2: see how I'm doing right.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Right, right, right right, that's fair. Do you feel like
- 5:49Speaker 1: like kind of the tone of that album like followed
- 5:52Speaker 1: you around a little bit?
- 5:53Speaker 2: Hell yeah, I think I kind of like immersed myself
- 5:55Speaker 2: in it too, because it was that's how people were
- 5:58Speaker 2: introduced to me. So I kind of like be came
- 6:01Speaker 2: that character right, Like I had the hair, it was
- 6:03Speaker 2: covering my face. I'm performing, I'm like looking down at
- 6:06Speaker 2: the ground. My confidence and my like just how I
- 6:11Speaker 2: presented myself during that time wasn't It just wasn't as
- 6:14Speaker 2: like open as I am right now. Like during that time,
- 6:17Speaker 2: I was kind of just like a show of myself.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Yeah. And also I feel like twenty sixteen is also
- 6:21Speaker 1: like a lot of people like you are coming on
- 6:24Speaker 1: the other side of the weekend and Frank Ocean were
- 6:26Speaker 1: like kind of the mysterious.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Yeah, and that was cool too, Like Vibe.
- 6:29Speaker 1: It was like, you know, lessons more in terms of
- 6:31Speaker 1: putting yourself out there. That's why when you when you
- 6:33Speaker 1: drop East Atlanta love Letter and you were like haircut.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Yeah photo, you know. Yeah. No, to this day, folks
- 6:41Speaker 2: are still you always find like a few folks that
- 6:43Speaker 2: are like bringing the old black back or you know,
- 6:46Speaker 2: where's the old ye?
- 6:47Speaker 1: But does it feel weird when you do your show?
- 6:49Speaker 1: I mean, obviously you have records that your fans are
- 6:51Speaker 1: going to sing along, but it just feel weird performing
- 6:53Speaker 1: like it's all like problems like.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Hell no no. I mean I got out whatever I
- 6:58Speaker 2: needed to get out when I made that song, and
- 7:01Speaker 2: there might have been like a time period where performing
- 7:04Speaker 2: it felt a little counterproductive or just like weird. But
- 7:07Speaker 2: now I'm at the part where it's just like a
- 7:08Speaker 2: live experience, like it happened. That was me like at
- 7:12Speaker 2: peak frustration, peak creativity, peak toxic relationship and figuring out
- 7:18Speaker 2: like how to materialize that into a song form. So
- 7:21Speaker 2: I don't feel no way when I'm performing now it's
- 7:22Speaker 2: still bangs at every show.
- 7:24Speaker 1: What would you say, like sonically you're at pocket wise
- 7:27Speaker 1: because the new record is dope. Bird Flu's fire is
- 7:31Speaker 1: that kind of like where we're going to be getting
- 7:32Speaker 1: more of that on.
- 7:33Speaker 2: It's a good balance. I feel like we normally figure
- 7:36Speaker 2: out a good balance. Bird Flu obviously is more rap
- 7:39Speaker 2: leaning and I love it that way, just like finding
- 7:41Speaker 2: those pockets where I get to like chop up the
- 7:43Speaker 2: verses and then on the coors, just like make it
- 7:45Speaker 2: a little bit more melodic, but not go too crazy.
- 7:49Speaker 2: And then the next one that we're dropping is called
- 7:51Speaker 2: Sunday Again, and it's completely opposite. So I'm not wrapping
- 7:53Speaker 2: at all. Two changes on it, and it's more of
- 7:56Speaker 2: just like a just like a vibe. You know. It's
- 8:00Speaker 2: my dedication to Sunday, which was the only way that
- 8:04Speaker 2: I was able to mark how fast time was going
- 8:06Speaker 2: by in the last couple of years. It would be
- 8:07Speaker 2: Sunday again.
- 8:08Speaker 1: You'd like, damn, it's Sunday.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Yeah, literally, it would be Sunday again, and I would
- 8:11Speaker 2: say it to myself, and by the time we got
- 8:13Speaker 2: to make in the song, it just felt like, Okay,
- 8:14Speaker 2: I want this song to feel like how my Sundays feel.
- 8:17Speaker 1: The theme of your artwork, I mean, it's not all
- 8:20Speaker 1: of your artwork, but you know you have included your
- 8:23Speaker 1: kids throughout the process. Is that on purpose? Yeah?
- 8:29Speaker 2: And it's never like I don't think of it like
- 8:32Speaker 2: so far in advance or anything. It's not like on
- 8:34Speaker 2: the move board.
- 8:35Speaker 1: It's not used to have the face, you know what
- 8:38Speaker 1: I mean.
- 8:39Speaker 2: It's never on the move board like East and the
- 8:41Speaker 2: love Letter. Six happened to be at that shoot, and
- 8:45Speaker 2: we happened to like stage those moments and like making
- 8:48Speaker 2: a thing right there. But it wasn't like we have
- 8:50Speaker 2: to have the baby on the cover or right.
- 8:52Speaker 1: It just happened and you're like, yo, this shit.
- 8:54Speaker 2: We were like, yeah, that's the best photo and then
- 8:56Speaker 2: saying for this one, like this one, we planned to
- 8:58Speaker 2: shoot around having all the girls together because Six was
- 9:00Speaker 2: coming out here and my newest baby, Blaze is already here,
- 9:03Speaker 2: and we were.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Great names Blaze and Six. I love that.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Yeah, they were gonna be in the same space at
- 9:08Speaker 2: the same time. So I'm like, let's just, you know,
- 9:10Speaker 2: capture us together. We don't have no family photos with
- 9:12Speaker 2: just all three of us, and of course, uh we
- 9:15Speaker 2: have photos with all three of us, but the one
- 9:16Speaker 2: I landed on for the main cover is me and Six.
- 9:19Speaker 2: I thought that it was nice to just show like
- 9:21Speaker 2: the the time lapse from East Atlanta love Letter time
- 9:24Speaker 2: Laps is crazy. It's insane.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Yeah, it's crazy because when I was like looking back
- 9:27Speaker 1: and I was like, oh, I was like I saw
- 9:28Speaker 1: the heart and I was like, yo, that's crazy because uh,
- 9:31Speaker 1: the intro on on Free Black's one of my favorite
- 9:34Speaker 1: appreciate it. It's my favorite song of yours. And so
- 9:36Speaker 1: like I was like, damn this this, this is the
- 9:38Speaker 1: this is the kid that he was singing about on
- 9:40Speaker 1: the intro.
- 9:41Speaker 2: And her getting old her understanding of what's going on
- 9:45Speaker 2: is funny too. Every time I go back to Atlanta
- 9:47Speaker 2: and talk to her, it's just interesting to pick her
- 9:49Speaker 2: brain about like what she observes at this age, because
- 9:52Speaker 2: when she was a baby, she didn't really have an
- 9:54Speaker 2: opinion or say so. But now it's like.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Oh, like now she knows Dad's list.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like why do people want to take pictures?
- 10:02Speaker 2: And like okay, like oh I wish I was famous.
- 10:04Speaker 2: I'm like, I don't know what.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Does she think about being out there like where like
- 10:08Speaker 1: you know, hey, she likes it.
- 10:09Speaker 2: She likes it. She's but the cool thing is like
- 10:12Speaker 2: she's such a pure kid that even though she likes
- 10:15Speaker 2: it a lot, she doesn't really wear it. She don't
- 10:17Speaker 2: go to school like my dad is so and so.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Like hey check out the new single. Not at all.
- 10:21Speaker 2: She's like she's in her own world doing kid things,
- 10:23Speaker 2: playing video games, never getting in trouble, and she just
- 10:27Speaker 2: likes the idea of like like, oh you uh texting
- 10:31Speaker 2: Kevin Durant. I wish I could text my favorite basketball
- 10:34Speaker 2: player and I wish I was famous. And I'm just
- 10:36Speaker 2: like yeah, I'm like it's a little it's half and half.
- 10:39Speaker 1: I'm like, well, it's like I feel like a nine
- 10:40Speaker 1: or ten year old in twenty twenty six because I
- 10:42Speaker 1: have a twelve year old. It's like dealing with a
- 10:44Speaker 1: whole adult dude. Yeah, it's crazy. Yep, it's like having
- 10:47Speaker 1: like a little it is dude. And like I have
- 10:49Speaker 1: a son, so it's like having a real bruh in
- 10:51Speaker 1: the house.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Yeah, and especially when they ask questions, Like she's that
- 10:54Speaker 2: type too, So it's like if she sees anything or
- 10:57Speaker 2: hears a word she doesn't know, she's like what's that? Yeah,
- 11:00Speaker 2: what's that mean? What's that?
- 11:01Speaker 1: Then you gotta be careful yeah yeah, or you know
- 11:04Speaker 1: where you go the other direction? Like my son he knows.
- 11:07Speaker 1: He I'm like, where'd you learn that? Bro? He's like, Dad,
- 11:09Speaker 1: You're on the phone for like an hour and I
- 11:11Speaker 1: was listening to everything.
- 11:12Speaker 2: I was like, oh shit, yep, gotta gotta be careful.
- 11:16Speaker 1: You gotta be careful, man, Hey, man, don't forget odd
- 11:18Speaker 1: Socks Basics the only thing that's on my feet man,

- 12:43Speaker 1: is it being out here in la Is it a
- 12:45Speaker 1: little harder to kind of draw the inspiration from Atlanta still?
- 12:49Speaker 1: Or are you still able to obviously say two changes
- 12:51Speaker 1: on the next single. You've always you know, repped repped
- 12:54Speaker 1: the city in a real way. But is it is
- 12:56Speaker 1: it a little tougher like when you're not there?
- 12:58Speaker 2: I guess not difficult like to me for me, Like
- 13:01Speaker 2: I lived in Atlanta from age four until twenty four,
- 13:06Speaker 2: probably right, so I got everything I needed from Atlanta
- 13:09Speaker 2: to to just like that's just who I am. Like
- 13:11Speaker 2: I can't I can't forget it. Yeah, I can't really
- 13:13Speaker 2: forget it. I don't like have to go searching for it,
- 13:17Speaker 2: but out here, like my inspiration, like just from being
- 13:22Speaker 2: at the crib and just from taking care of my
- 13:23Speaker 2: babies is all that I need. Like my life is linear.
- 13:27Speaker 2: It's not like going backwards. I don't need to like
- 13:29Speaker 2: necessarily go back to the city to to be like reimmersed.
- 13:33Speaker 2: And even though I can't, it's.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Just yeah, for sure. It's just it's like a changing
- 13:36Speaker 1: city too. I mean, but you know what I love
- 13:38Speaker 1: about Atlanta. It's like, no matter what, the strip clubs
- 13:41Speaker 1: are still the strip clubs. Yeah, And it ain't like
- 13:43Speaker 1: you're going to go to Atlanta and they be like, man,
- 13:44Speaker 1: the Blue Flame closed.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Or something changed, and it's like, no, it's still there.
- 13:48Speaker 2: It's still there, still there. And anytime I go back, like,
- 13:51Speaker 2: I still feel at home. I still get to have fun.
- 13:53Speaker 2: We still can go out, and yeah, like I get
- 13:56Speaker 2: what I need from Atlanta.
- 13:57Speaker 1: What were you texting KD about?
- 14:00Speaker 2: Probably trying to get my daughter to a game, because
- 14:02Speaker 2: she she's already like met like Tree young and like
- 14:06Speaker 2: she's met some of her favorite basketball players.
- 14:08Speaker 1: She does. She she's sitting in the basketball.
- 14:10Speaker 2: She loves basketball like way different than I love basketball
- 14:13Speaker 2: at her age. Like I would get on two K
- 14:15Speaker 2: and I would just go to play. Now she's on
- 14:17Speaker 2: a roster like.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Doing bills, making trades.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Yeah, And I'm like, you spend more time on the
- 14:22Speaker 2: may do you spend playing the game, but she she
- 14:24Speaker 2: enjoys it.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Is she gonna play.
- 14:26Speaker 2: I don't know she's played before, she's done like organized
- 14:29Speaker 2: team basketball. But I think she likes the information of
- 14:33Speaker 2: it more than like the physical GM or a coach
- 14:36Speaker 2: something like that, something like that, because when it comes
- 14:38Speaker 2: to like the actual physical part of it where people
- 14:41Speaker 2: are pushing, and she's like, nah.
- 14:43Speaker 1: I just thought, because Katie is executive, like quietly be
- 14:46Speaker 1: behind the scenes, like with Hella rappers. You know what
- 14:48Speaker 1: I'm saying. I'm like, it's like, kat you gonna help
- 14:50Speaker 1: executive producer.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Oh yeah, now I know no basketball executive producers.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Unfortunately it happens. I think he did a drink album about.
- 14:57Speaker 2: To say, a few of them.
- 14:59Speaker 1: I think someone.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Most of them got labels, don't they. I' you hearing?
- 15:02Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 15:03Speaker 2: I heard that all the ball players want to be Yeah.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Yeah, So back in the day, Katie did have a label,
- 15:08Speaker 1: and so did like Carmelo and Carmelo Anthony signed Cassidy after.
- 15:13Speaker 2: I remember that because Castle was my favorite rapper for
- 15:15Speaker 2: a minute, yo.
- 15:17Speaker 1: If you know, you know, because I think people forget
- 15:19Speaker 1: like Cassidy's like punchline wise, he might be the greatest
- 15:22Speaker 1: of all time. Yea Castle, we're talking about straight punchlines.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Yeahs is different.
- 15:27Speaker 2: That was the air YouTube era for sure, when he.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Beat Freeways that battle. Did you ever watch that YouTube battle?
- 15:32Speaker 2: Of course multiple times?
- 15:34Speaker 1: Man, so good Man shout out to Cassidy Man all time.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Remember he came up in a freestyle like two years
- 15:40Speaker 1: ago and I was just like, oh my god, you're
- 15:43Speaker 1: still that guy. Don't You're still that.
- 15:45Speaker 2: I got a meum I gotta see on one day.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Oh Man, can you talk about just you know, you
- 15:50Speaker 1: and Cole have this synergy with each other. You guys
- 15:53Speaker 1: have timeless songs together. What what what is it about
- 15:58Speaker 1: working with Cole? You feel like you guys bring the
- 16:01Speaker 1: best out of each other.
- 16:02Speaker 2: It's just real people, that's really it. Like I don't
- 16:06Speaker 2: like to have to cut through like a facade of
- 16:08Speaker 2: what an artist you know is sometimes and it's just
- 16:11Speaker 2: nice to meet people that are on that same level
- 16:13Speaker 2: where it's just real conversations, real questions about how you've
- 16:16Speaker 2: been and how you doing, what are you inspired by?
- 16:19Speaker 1: Why?
- 16:19Speaker 2: And playing music And that's really it. So like the
- 16:22Speaker 2: first time that I linked with him, I played him
- 16:24Speaker 2: a couple of songs. And I think the second time
- 16:26Speaker 2: I linked with him might have been when I had
- 16:28Speaker 2: Pretty Little Fears. And that wasn't a moment of like
- 16:31Speaker 2: asking him to do anything for me. It was just
- 16:33Speaker 2: playing music and he was just like, send me that.
- 16:35Speaker 1: They send me that one.
- 16:36Speaker 2: I'm like, you ain't got to ask me twice at all.
- 16:38Speaker 1: That is that not your biggest song.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Pretty Little Fears? No, it's probably neck and neck with Problems.
- 16:46Speaker 1: It's up there.
- 16:47Speaker 2: Yeah, they're like those those two are in the top five,
- 16:50Speaker 2: but Problems probably still edges it out.
- 16:53Speaker 1: You know what's crazy is my son's twenty now and
- 16:56Speaker 1: he got hipped to you on the second album. Yeah,
- 17:00Speaker 1: it's like he's got a whole other perception of Like
- 17:02Speaker 1: I'm like, now you got to go back to that
- 17:03Speaker 1: first joint us.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's the coolest shit though. I like that
- 17:07Speaker 2: no matter how long you've been doing it, like every
- 17:09Speaker 2: time that you release a new project, you get away
- 17:11Speaker 2: of a new people who are just meeting you for
- 17:13Speaker 2: the first time.
- 17:13Speaker 1: One hundred percent, yeah, one hundred percent. Yeah. I think
- 17:17Speaker 1: like with Cole too, it's like, like you said, he
- 17:19Speaker 1: is like like, like I know a lot of people
- 17:21Speaker 1: were like his rollout was so different because he just
- 17:23Speaker 1: was like rolling around in the city. But like that
- 17:25Speaker 1: is like legitimately like who he is as a person person.
- 17:28Speaker 1: So it's like when you see like him going viral
- 17:31Speaker 1: for riding a ten speed in Manhattan. Yeah, that's how
- 17:34Speaker 1: we would like it, Like that's him, Like he's just
- 17:36Speaker 1: a normal dude.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, And I think it's cool that they like
- 17:38Speaker 2: marketed it that way anyway, because that's the point of
- 17:40Speaker 2: marketing anyway. So all the internet chatter and like it
- 17:45Speaker 2: doesn't make any sense. You you make a record, you
- 17:46Speaker 2: promote it.
- 17:47Speaker 1: It is still wild to me that people still call
- 17:52Speaker 1: you six lack.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that's forever.
- 17:54Speaker 1: That is going to be a forever thing for you.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Have you just came to peace with it.
- 17:57Speaker 2: The thing is, before anyone else called me that I
- 18:00Speaker 2: was in my own raps like it was that was
- 18:02Speaker 2: a normal, natural part of just the conversation. But we
- 18:05Speaker 2: kind of transition into like the meme troll era right
- 18:09Speaker 2: to where they think they discover something. You just got
- 18:11Speaker 2: to kind of let him have it and.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Just be like it's like and it's funny because my producer,
- 18:15Speaker 1: he asked, he's like it's black, right, not six Slacks.
- 18:17Speaker 1: I'm like, listen, man. Yeah, there are people who are
- 18:19Speaker 1: fans of this guy. There's and then there's like people
- 18:22Speaker 1: who just are like, Yo, what's the what's the dude's name?
- 18:24Speaker 1: Six Slack guy? And I'm like, dog, if.
- 18:27Speaker 2: They gotta if they got to pronounce alate that to
- 18:29Speaker 2: get it, then it's all good.
- 18:30Speaker 1: But they'll take it.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what. There's some folks who are just like, nah,
- 18:33Speaker 2: that's what I'm gonna call them because that's what.
- 18:35Speaker 1: Because that's what it says in my brain can't wrap around.
- 18:39Speaker 2: I'm just like, okay, yeah, it's It's good combo though,
- 18:41Speaker 2: and it makes for good merch too, so I'm never
- 18:43Speaker 2: tripping on that.
- 18:44Speaker 1: Yeah. Are you going to be planning a tour around
- 18:47Speaker 1: this release? Yeah?
- 18:47Speaker 2: We're doing. Yeah good, we're doing tour fall time, I believe,
- 18:52Speaker 2: like late fall. We're still putting it together now we're
- 18:55Speaker 2: out in it. But yeah, every album, every tour.
- 18:58Speaker 1: So can you talk about because I feel like we
- 19:00Speaker 1: don't talk enough about LVRN as like we always hear
- 19:03Speaker 1: about QC or TD, But I do feel like LVRN
- 19:07Speaker 1: is in that conversation. If you think about the amount
- 19:09Speaker 1: of like superstars that have come from that label, and
- 19:13Speaker 1: even on the management side there there's so much what
- 19:16Speaker 1: is I guess just kind of being a part of
- 19:19Speaker 1: that crew? What does it mean to you? And like
- 19:20Speaker 1: what are things that you've been able to kind of
- 19:22Speaker 1: pick up because they LVRN is very much It's a
- 19:27Speaker 1: unique situation in music because I feel like all of
- 19:31Speaker 1: the artists are very high integrity signings, you know what
- 19:35Speaker 1: I'm saying. It's like and I mean, Summer Walker's so crazy,
- 19:40Speaker 1: You're so crazy. There's just so much incredible talent on LVRN.
- 19:43Speaker 1: What does it mean to you being a part of
- 19:44Speaker 1: that crew?
- 19:45Speaker 2: Just really one on one, like I have been able
- 19:48Speaker 2: to see how other labels and other management teams move too,
- 19:51Speaker 2: So it's nice to know that, like what I'm a
- 19:53Speaker 2: part of is is a very special thing. Like I
- 19:55Speaker 2: don't know or think that other situations are like this
- 19:58Speaker 2: to where on the management side or on the label side,
- 20:01Speaker 2: Like you can count on them for you know, creative direction,
- 20:04Speaker 2: you can count on them for just a strong opinion,
- 20:07Speaker 2: like when you need somebody to like be honest about something,
- 20:09Speaker 2: you can count on them for handling. The tour side,
- 20:12Speaker 2: you can count on them for merch ideas. It's like
- 20:16Speaker 2: we're it's so in house that you know, sometimes you
- 20:20Speaker 2: wonder like how does how is it? Just how is
- 20:23Speaker 2: the industry set up in a way to where most
- 20:24Speaker 2: people don't have it like this? Like you need a
- 20:26Speaker 2: full team and a full like group of folks who
- 20:29Speaker 2: you can like have just regular conversations with about things
- 20:32Speaker 2: that you care about. So oh yeah, it's one on one.
- 20:36Speaker 2: They've been with me since before I dropped my first song,
- 20:39Speaker 2: and they were looking out for me just when it
- 20:42Speaker 2: was an idea of like I think we got something, so.
- 20:46Speaker 1: Have you obviously, uh spilit Village project that dropped a
- 20:50Speaker 1: few years ago was incredible. Are you guys? Would you guys?
- 20:53Speaker 1: I mean everyone's so busy now, but do you feel
- 20:55Speaker 1: like there's a possibility of you guys ever, Yeah, getting
- 20:58Speaker 1: everybody pulling everybody back to other for something. Yeah.
- 21:00Speaker 2: Always every few years, like we end up at an
- 21:03Speaker 2: Airbnb or ask somebody's crep working and then.
- 21:05Speaker 1: Like, hey, I think we got an album.
- 21:06Speaker 2: Yeah, and then me and Jid, like me and Jid
- 21:08Speaker 2: been talking about a collap album.
- 21:09Speaker 1: A joint album with you and Jid would go crazy.
- 21:11Speaker 2: We've been talking about that since like twenty fourteen, twenty thirteen, probably.
- 21:15Speaker 1: I mean listen, that is effectively thirteen years ago, so
- 21:19Speaker 1: I think it's overdue.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's my guy.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Do you guys have music that's just sitting on hard drive?
- 21:24Speaker 2: Yeah? We got demos. We got plenty of demos, like
- 21:26Speaker 2: from that era like twenty fourteen to like twenty eighteen,
- 21:29Speaker 2: we have plenty of songs. And then on the as
- 21:32Speaker 2: shit just took off for both of us, we made
- 21:35Speaker 2: less music together. But like the conversation is still like
- 21:39Speaker 2: as as consistent.
- 21:40Speaker 1: Hey, you guys gotta go into it with intent, like, hey,
- 21:43Speaker 1: we're gonna go in and we're gonna do this.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Yeah, we got to block out like a couple of
- 21:47Speaker 2: weeks that minimum. Yeah, like make it our thing. But
- 21:49Speaker 2: I think it was just like waiting for him to
- 21:51Speaker 2: do his album, waiting for me to do my album.
- 21:53Speaker 2: And now we're like at the place where we can
- 21:55Speaker 2: actually like fuck around.
- 21:56Speaker 1: He's got a metro booming album and the cut.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:58Speaker 1: Yeah, Well, if you could do a whole album with
- 22:01Speaker 1: a producer, who would it be? You could just lock it.
- 22:04Speaker 2: That's a good question, That's a really good question. Hmm.
- 22:11Speaker 2: You know, no Idea, no id be crazy.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Yeah, No Idea Ida one of the greatest of all time.
- 22:18Speaker 2: Yes, one of the greatest, and a lot of the
- 22:20Speaker 2: stuff that he's had his hands in, like in the
- 22:22Speaker 2: last few years, like people just wouldn't know because he's
- 22:24Speaker 2: not promoting it so hard on social media, like I
- 22:27Speaker 2: did this, but all the new artists that just kind
- 22:30Speaker 2: of like pop up in their songs and production sounds
- 22:32Speaker 2: so polished and the vocal sounds so beautiful. I'm like
- 22:34Speaker 2: it just has been leading back to him.
- 22:36Speaker 1: So I have a picture from Rock the Bells before
- 22:40Speaker 1: it was called before, not the new Rock the Bells,
- 22:43Speaker 1: the old school Rock the Bells from like twenty ten
- 22:45Speaker 1: to eleven. I have a picture with him and DJ Premier.
- 22:47Speaker 1: It's one of my favorite photos I've ever taken. I
- 22:49Speaker 1: ran into both of them at the same time backstage,
- 22:51Speaker 1: and I was like, yeah, oh my god together please.
- 22:55Speaker 2: No No Idea is one of my favorites for sure,
- 22:57Speaker 2: and like just a great guy too.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, super dope, dude man, super humble. It's crazy
- 23:02Speaker 1: too because it's almost like he doesn't have a tag.
- 23:04Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just he's just here doing his thing. And
- 23:07Speaker 2: if you know, you know, and.
- 23:08Speaker 1: So wild because it's like there's a whole generation of
- 23:11Speaker 1: producers like DJ Premieer doesn't have a tag, you know
- 23:13Speaker 1: what I'm saying. It's like, but all the new guys
- 23:15Speaker 1: like they have tags, so you're like, oh, yeah, yeah,
- 23:17Speaker 1: that's who made that.
- 23:18Speaker 2: I think it's because like the sounds were just very, very,
- 23:22Speaker 2: just distinct. Back then. It was like you knew when you.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Heard when you were timbaling.
- 23:26Speaker 2: Yeah, you just you absolutely you didn't need anybody to
- 23:29Speaker 2: be like Timbo like it was the production gives it away, offer.
- 23:32Speaker 1: It, yeah, one hundred percent. And I feel like now too,
- 23:35Speaker 1: it's like it's it's it's a branding thing because it's
- 23:37Speaker 1: like you I get it, like if I was to
- 23:40Speaker 1: start making beat type of like I need a tag
- 23:41Speaker 1: because that's because people will know your tag over anything.
- 23:44Speaker 2: Folks are reverting though. I feel like in the last
- 23:46Speaker 2: few years some of the records that I have, people
- 23:48Speaker 2: call me like very last minute, like take the tag off,
- 23:50Speaker 2: and I'm like, really, that's cool with me.
- 23:53Speaker 1: It's better for the music, ye low key yeah yeah.
- 23:56Speaker 2: But I think that's also like when they start to
- 23:57Speaker 2: get a little more motion too, they like they.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Doesn't need it. Yeah, yeah, I just I love I
- 24:03Speaker 1: love the Metro tag. I think Metros are Doctor Dre
- 24:08Speaker 1: of our time.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Yeah, Metro, I mean that tag. All his tags have
- 24:11Speaker 2: been necessary and.
- 24:11Speaker 1: He's got a few. Yeah, he's rolled them. He wrote
- 24:14Speaker 1: sometimes and roll out a new one. Yeah, Like when
- 24:16Speaker 1: him and Big Shonda that joint album, he rolled out
- 24:18Speaker 1: the big seOne.
- 24:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I love love Metro tag. That's a staple, yo.
- 24:23Speaker 1: So this album. How many cuts are on the album?
- 24:24Speaker 2: Man? We got sixteen total? It was fourteen originally, and
- 24:29Speaker 2: I added two bonuses in the last few weeks really
- 24:31Speaker 2: because I just never stopped recording.
- 24:33Speaker 1: So so the bonus is gonna come out after.
- 24:36Speaker 2: So one bonus will be on digital, like when it
- 24:38Speaker 2: first comes out, it'll just be label bonus, and then
- 24:41Speaker 2: the next one will come like a couple of weeks.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Later, is it. Because when you're at the level you are,
- 24:47Speaker 1: you have to turn in music for vinyl. So I'm
- 24:49Speaker 1: assuming the vinyl won't have the bonuses.
- 24:51Speaker 2: The vinyl will have the bonuses. So it's like we're
- 24:54Speaker 2: kind of doing different editions. If you got the vinyl,
- 24:56Speaker 2: then you have a very specific song that's only on
- 24:58Speaker 2: the digital got it?
- 24:59Speaker 1: Got it? Yeah, It's so crazy because you'll see like
- 25:02Speaker 1: people be like, yo, this album got changed up with
- 25:04Speaker 1: the vinyl. If you have the vinyl, yeah you got
- 25:07Speaker 1: you got a version of the song that a version
- 25:09Speaker 1: of the album that isn't on online or whatever.
- 25:11Speaker 2: Yeah, so the vinyl has a has the bonuses already.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Besides Titty Boy, who else is on the album?
- 25:18Speaker 2: Let's see? We got me and Quinn, We got me
- 25:24Speaker 2: and Mariba. We got me and a z Chi living
- 25:31Speaker 2: in La Leon Thomas? Who else is on the project? Change? Chike? Leon, Leon, Quinn,
- 25:42Speaker 2: Mariba a man.

- 26:59Speaker 1: three thirty three. Let's get back to the podcast. Did
- 27:02Speaker 1: Leon do any production on the song? So talented?
- 27:04Speaker 2: Me and Lee I've been working together for a minute
- 27:06Speaker 2: and normally like he has either had a hand in
- 27:08Speaker 2: production or vocals, but this time it was just feature
- 27:11Speaker 2: like as leon Thomas the artist.
- 27:13Speaker 1: It's gotta be pretty cool to watch his because he
- 27:15Speaker 1: has been around.
- 27:16Speaker 2: Yeah, and the years that we worked together, it was
- 27:18Speaker 2: always just kind of like from a writing or production side. Uh.
- 27:21Speaker 2: And this time it's just like, bro, I need this,
- 27:24Speaker 2: y like I just need I need you to do
- 27:25Speaker 2: some backgrounds on a chorus and he does. He does
- 27:27Speaker 2: like a little outro verse.
- 27:29Speaker 1: At the end and then shout out the Chike man Chick.
- 27:31Speaker 1: I loved crazy.
- 27:32Speaker 2: I love Chick ever since I heard him on school
- 27:34Speaker 2: Boy and then Kendrick. I like his presence.
- 27:37Speaker 1: I like his You're on You're on what school Way album?
- 27:40Speaker 1: Are you on? Crash Dummy?
- 27:41Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 27:42Speaker 1: It is it called crashed It's not called it's not
- 27:44Speaker 1: called crash Dummy with the it's just called crash talk,
- 27:46Speaker 1: Crash crash talk.
- 27:47Speaker 2: There you go, Yep, that's right.
- 27:49Speaker 1: That's cute. Man. I just saw a video. I don't
- 27:50Speaker 1: know if you follow school with cubit. Somehow he's getting
- 27:53Speaker 1: jacked mhm, Like he looks like he's a wrestler.
- 27:57Speaker 2: That makes sense. I mean, everybody getting healthy right.
- 27:59Speaker 1: Now, everybody accepts me and Neil.
- 28:03Speaker 2: It ain't too late.
- 28:05Speaker 1: It ain't too late, yo, so uh May twenty second
- 28:09Speaker 1: love is the new gangs to you do release music
- 28:14Speaker 1: and you'll go away for a couple of years. What
- 28:15Speaker 1: is kind of like is that? Is that is that
- 28:19Speaker 1: on purpose? Or are you very much like hey, when
- 28:21Speaker 1: I'm ready, like like you'll know when you're ready, Like
- 28:23Speaker 1: if you get inspired immediately, will you get back in.
- 28:25Speaker 2: Like it's I mean, I'm always working, so it's more
- 28:28Speaker 2: just like when I'm ready, I'm ready. I don't normally
- 28:30Speaker 2: plan to to like take off a couple of years
- 28:32Speaker 2: because it's no really off time for me, Like Bill's
- 28:35Speaker 2: got to be paid, right, No life has to continue
- 28:37Speaker 2: to just be supplied. So uh yeah, it's never a
- 28:42Speaker 2: plan two or three year hiatus. I just feel like
- 28:44Speaker 2: that amount of time like I'm able to actually live
- 28:46Speaker 2: and experience it and then come back and like have
- 28:49Speaker 2: something to give people.
- 28:50Speaker 1: When you're at a cycle and you're like, okay, the
- 28:52Speaker 1: album's out. Tours over how outside of being a father,
- 28:56Speaker 1: how do you spend your free time?
- 28:59Speaker 2: I think I've been working on my free time this
- 29:01Speaker 2: go around, Like every other time, it's my brain just
- 29:04Speaker 2: kind of kicks back into like I need to record
- 29:06Speaker 2: or I want to record or I want to get
- 29:08Speaker 2: I got to create, Yeah, like I got to create,
- 29:10Speaker 2: And only recently have I been trying to figure out
- 29:13Speaker 2: like how to pay more attention to like the time
- 29:15Speaker 2: I need outside of being an artist. So if I
- 29:19Speaker 2: can go on road trips, that's kind of like how
- 29:21Speaker 2: I play trips with my girl.
- 29:23Speaker 1: Road trips or a vibeo, you know, throwing some music.
- 29:25Speaker 2: California is easy to drive too, so it's just like
- 29:27Speaker 2: you go up the coast literally, if I want to
- 29:29Speaker 2: go to the Bay, if I want to go to Napa,
- 29:30Speaker 2: if I want to go to Ohio, if I want
- 29:32Speaker 2: to go to San Diego, like I can just get
- 29:34Speaker 2: to multiple places without having a sweat too much.
- 29:37Speaker 1: Are you a podcast or like music person? On the
- 29:41Speaker 1: road trip?
- 29:41Speaker 2: Music? Mainly when I'm doing like my quick drives around La.
- 29:45Speaker 2: I've been recognizing, like recently it's kind of been quiet
- 29:48Speaker 2: in the car, Like you just get in the car,
- 29:50Speaker 2: you won't turn nothing on.
- 29:51Speaker 1: My wife does not understand that about me. We'll get
- 29:54Speaker 1: in the car and I'll turn off. I'll just drive
- 29:56Speaker 1: in silence, Like I don't understand why you're driving in silence,
- 29:58Speaker 1: and it's like it's my whole life is music.
- 30:00Speaker 2: Literally, I'm like, either I need Pisa in this moment
- 30:03Speaker 2: or I'm thinking about every single thing that like I
- 30:05Speaker 2: don't normally have the time to process, like when I'm
- 30:08Speaker 2: around the house, right, So it's like I'm in the
- 30:10Speaker 2: car and my brain is just like problems.
- 30:12Speaker 1: I love driving alone too. Driving alone is the best
- 30:15Speaker 1: for sure music off just maybe I have it like
- 30:19Speaker 1: a diacoa. I love die coke fridge cigarette. I call
- 30:22Speaker 1: it die coke. I gotta work on my house.
- 30:24Speaker 2: I had an issue with coca cola for a minute,
- 30:27Speaker 2: but I kicked it, so.
- 30:28Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a thing. I had an issue with coca
- 30:30Speaker 1: cola for a minute, and I have an issue with
- 30:32Speaker 1: diet coke. I don't even like normal coke. Now, it's
- 30:35Speaker 1: it's the aspartame is. It's it's smacking. Okay, let's talk.
- 30:39Speaker 1: I want to go. Give me your Mount Rushmore of
- 30:45Speaker 1: Atlanta Rappers and then Atlanta singers.
- 30:49Speaker 2: Oh all right, Mount Rushmore. They're always my most difficult
- 30:54Speaker 2: because my brain just splits up a bunch of different ways.
- 30:59Speaker 2: Mount Rushmore Atlanta Rappers, you said, ms yep, okay, uh,
- 31:04Speaker 2: three stacks for sure. At the top. This is where
- 31:12Speaker 2: it gets a little crazy future. Okay, I think consistency
- 31:16Speaker 2: wise and output wise and.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Quality one of the greatest of all time for sure.
- 31:22Speaker 2: Three is where it gets a little crazy.
- 31:24Speaker 1: Because someone's feelings are getting hurt at for sure.
- 31:28Speaker 2: For sure, I feel like there's a there's a very
- 31:31Speaker 2: connected like peer line that goes through t I, Chezy, Gez, Gucci,
- 31:38Speaker 2: and for me, hm hmmm, I think I'm gonna go
- 31:45Speaker 2: tip t I yep.
- 31:47Speaker 1: Just got a gold rap first rap song of the
- 31:49Speaker 1: year to go gold that was released in twenty twenty six.
- 31:51Speaker 2: Yep, I saw that I'm gonna go Geezy Gucci and
- 31:57Speaker 2: I say that because together, yeah, yeah, like I can't.
- 32:02Speaker 1: I can't do one with its hard.
- 32:03Speaker 2: It's literally hard to rank them for me, like I
- 32:05Speaker 2: live to both of their music, Like throughout my high school,
- 32:08Speaker 2: middle school.
- 32:09Speaker 1: I always give it to j Z because I think
- 32:10Speaker 1: GZ has mark overall timeless albums for sure, bodies of work.
- 32:16Speaker 2: Now, g Z albums, Gucci mixed texts for sure for sure,
- 32:19Speaker 2: So they kind of like share that next tier.
- 32:21Speaker 1: I respect it, and.
- 32:23Speaker 2: I won't put j I d like at five because
- 32:26Speaker 2: that's like of the new era. Like, I don't know
- 32:29Speaker 2: anybody that can put worse together the way that he
- 32:31Speaker 2: put worse.
- 32:31Speaker 1: He is, you know, when we I always have this
- 32:34Speaker 1: conversation about like, you know, we had like the last era,
- 32:37Speaker 1: which was like Cole and Kendrick and Big Sean and Drake,
- 32:40Speaker 1: and I feel like the new era, it's like like
- 32:43Speaker 1: j I d Is. In that conversation, we're like, okay, man,
- 32:47Speaker 1: like a lot of people can't touch it.
- 32:48Speaker 2: And then from Atlanta specifically too, it's just like there's
- 32:51Speaker 2: nobody else that's doing what he's doing, so he's got
- 32:54Speaker 2: to be, you know, number one in some sense. So
- 32:56Speaker 2: I think of the new generation of lyricists that come
- 32:58Speaker 2: from Atlanta, it's not that many. And he's the.
- 33:01Speaker 1: Best honorable mention to Sahi the Prince whose sighs amazed.
- 33:05Speaker 1: As alien from the East Side, we just needed to
- 33:07Speaker 1: put out more music, Yeah for sure.
- 33:09Speaker 2: Yeah he's from the East Side as well. Crazy writer,
- 33:11Speaker 2: crazy rapper, amazing.
- 33:13Speaker 1: What's your favorite TI album I have? I just had
- 33:16Speaker 1: arguments with my boy about this because a lot of
- 33:18Speaker 1: people say King, and I'm like, that's kind of the
- 33:20Speaker 1: generic answer.
- 33:22Speaker 2: You would say that, but you had to I don't know,
- 33:26Speaker 2: like I was there when King was out and I
- 33:29Speaker 2: was at the Homies crib and we were all just kids,
- 33:32Speaker 2: and it felt like somebody like breaking through and crossing over.
- 33:36Speaker 1: Like oh, it was like it was very much the
- 33:38Speaker 1: crossover album where it was like, oh, t I is
- 33:40Speaker 1: the biggest rapper on the planet right now.
- 33:42Speaker 2: But for us, like as a kid during that time,
- 33:44Speaker 2: like that was the moment that you kind of championed
- 33:46Speaker 2: it the most. And that's why it hit the hardest
- 33:48Speaker 2: for me because it was like our favorite rapper.
- 33:50Speaker 1: I don't know how old you. I'm thirty nine, so
- 33:51Speaker 1: I'm pretty old.
- 33:53Speaker 2: Like a I thirty three, thirty four, I'd be forgetting
- 33:57Speaker 2: little six year gap like yeah, I was, I was
- 33:59Speaker 2: a nine.
- 34:01Speaker 1: Yeah, when I'm eighty seven. Babies.
- 34:02Speaker 2: So when it came out, I just remember where I was,
- 34:05Speaker 2: and I remember how important it was to it to us,
- 34:07Speaker 2: and I remember the debates, I remember the arguments.
- 34:09Speaker 1: I remember it's a great album. King is incredible. I'm
- 34:12Speaker 1: very much. It's a toss up between urban legend or
- 34:15Speaker 1: trap music for me.
- 34:16Speaker 2: I mean both are crazy. The only reason why I
- 34:18Speaker 2: say King is just because of where I was when
- 34:21Speaker 2: it happened and how it.
- 34:21Speaker 1: Was crazy and.
- 34:24Speaker 2: Yeah, and then obviously like those two from from just
- 34:26Speaker 2: like a.
- 34:27Speaker 1: What about Gez? What's your favorite GZ albums.
- 34:31Speaker 2: That could go forever? I mean because I like the
- 34:34Speaker 2: whole tam one of course.
- 34:35Speaker 1: Yeah, but I damn you think the recession.
- 34:38Speaker 2: Session was amazing. Recession was amazing.
- 34:41Speaker 1: So I think obviously one on one is the one,
- 34:43Speaker 1: but recession is so crazy.
- 34:46Speaker 2: Recession was crazy, and it was like, man, it was
- 34:49Speaker 2: just yeah, I would go recession too. I remember, I
- 34:52Speaker 2: remember how it felt to be living during It.
- 34:54Speaker 1: Felt like it was like he like it was like yo,
- 34:56Speaker 1: I feel like I felt that ship. And then my
- 34:58Speaker 1: President is Black was yeah, I was.
- 35:00Speaker 2: I was still young, but I understood. I'm like, yeah,
- 35:02Speaker 2: this is this is like top tier rapping, right.
- 35:04Speaker 1: What about singers Atlanta singers?
- 35:07Speaker 2: Mm hmm hmmm usher for sure?
- 35:12Speaker 1: Sure, let's go.
- 35:15Speaker 2: Myself for sure, cheater throw me some Atlanta singers right now.
- 35:23Speaker 2: Singers summer summer summer.
- 35:30Speaker 1: I forgot about Monica.
- 35:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel like I already get ushers at the top.
- 35:35Speaker 2: But I feel like Atlanta is such a hybrid sounding
- 35:38Speaker 2: type of place that you like, aside from the generation
- 35:41Speaker 2: that was like right before mine, where you had like
- 35:43Speaker 2: the girl groups and stuff like, it wasn't that many
- 35:46Speaker 2: people coming out just like singing, singing.
- 35:48Speaker 1: But see who we might be forgetting.
- 35:49Speaker 2: I gotta be forgetting somebody obviously of course. But I
- 35:53Speaker 2: was a baby, so like, I know they goes, but I.
- 35:56Speaker 1: Was, yeah, there's groups. It's like, okay, Jagged Edge is incredible,
- 35:59Speaker 1: but yeah, it's like amazing. Tony Braxton is from Atlanta apparently, Okay,
- 36:03Speaker 1: I don't know if that's I mean, Juice, Google Sierra
- 36:05Speaker 1: Shore Tierra.
- 36:07Speaker 2: That was the time. But I mean again, like I
- 36:09Speaker 2: was a boy, so I was really.
- 36:10Speaker 1: Just Lloyd Lloyd what it's got a dope voice. I
- 36:14Speaker 1: want to put him in the Usher TLC Summer Walker,
- 36:18Speaker 1: but he not. Lloyd's got joints up.
- 36:20Speaker 2: Yeah, let's go.
- 36:22Speaker 1: Lloyds got joints he one twelve low.
- 36:24Speaker 2: Key yeah, I mean all of the Jagged Edge one
- 36:26Speaker 2: twelve everything like so so death was ding during that time.
- 36:29Speaker 1: Was man, all the R and B groups, it was
- 36:31Speaker 1: all great, God rest their soul because I feel like
- 36:33Speaker 1: we can't have R and B groups anymore because everybody
- 36:35Speaker 1: want they cut, like if there's not enough money out there.
- 36:39Speaker 1: But like groups are like when I see a group,
- 36:42Speaker 1: I get excited because I'm like, man, we don't got
- 36:44Speaker 1: these no more.
- 36:44Speaker 2: That's because it's splitting that money full five ways.
- 36:47Speaker 1: Man, it's like an R and B groups. Rap groups
- 36:49Speaker 1: here like a thing of the past.
- 36:50Speaker 2: It don't worry. I was in the group when I
- 36:52Speaker 2: signed one of my first deals. It was four of us.
- 36:54Speaker 2: What was the name of your group, team Flight Team Flight, Yeah,
- 36:57Speaker 2: it was full four of us plus our manager who
- 37:00Speaker 2: was just a homie as well.
- 37:01Speaker 1: He was in the group.
- 37:02Speaker 2: No, he was just travel with So when we all
- 37:04Speaker 2: went to Miami, like, he was just a part of us.
- 37:06Speaker 2: And when we signed our first deal, we split. Technically
- 37:10Speaker 2: were supposed to split ten k oh four or five ways,
- 37:14Speaker 2: but we only got five of it. And that was
- 37:16Speaker 2: just like.
- 37:18Speaker 1: What's this like a production deal?
- 37:20Speaker 2: No, it was a label.
- 37:22Speaker 1: Who were you guys signed to?
- 37:23Speaker 2: We've been down this road before. I was signed the
- 37:27Speaker 2: floor Rider for a minute Floor Rider, Yeah, like twenty
- 37:31Speaker 2: eleven to twenty fourteen.
- 37:32Speaker 1: So was this uh when he was with po.
- 37:36Speaker 2: Boy, Yeah, he class everybody else. Yeah, that was that
- 37:40Speaker 2: was I was there every day, nice, every day.
- 37:43Speaker 1: Crazy flow Rider had that song with the song that
- 37:45Speaker 1: broke him was that birthday song? Oh yeah, birth and
- 37:49Speaker 1: then he just took that pop shit.
- 37:51Speaker 2: And was like, yeah, I was there during like I
- 37:53Speaker 2: feel like, what was the peak? It was like good
- 37:55Speaker 2: feeling and while I was and like oh.
- 37:58Speaker 1: Yeah yo, maas there was that weird I mean, did
- 38:01Speaker 1: were you ever in like influence to try to make
- 38:03Speaker 1: that kind of music?
- 38:04Speaker 2: That was all that was around me. So for a minute,
- 38:06Speaker 2: it was like.
- 38:07Speaker 1: Team Flight was sounding like it was it was our
- 38:10Speaker 1: own thing.
- 38:10Speaker 2: But it was just like if you're surrounded by pop
- 38:12Speaker 2: music twenty four to seven, then of course you're gonna
- 38:14Speaker 2: like try and write and get that placement. And then
- 38:16Speaker 2: of course you know, the A and rs are like,
- 38:18Speaker 2: well maybe you should try this, so maybe you should
- 38:20Speaker 2: keep this for yourself. And then that was around the
- 38:21Speaker 2: time it started clicking for me. I was like, no,
- 38:24Speaker 2: I'm starting to develop an idea of like the type
- 38:26Speaker 2: of artists I want to be Minu Frank, the Weekend, Janey,
- 38:30Speaker 2: everybody started to emerge around that time, and I was like,
- 38:33Speaker 2: there's something going on over here that I want to
- 38:35Speaker 2: be a part of.
- 38:36Speaker 1: And at that time it was like alternative R and B.
- 38:38Speaker 2: Yeah, but they didn't like they didn't see it coming
- 38:41Speaker 2: over there. They were like, Nah, this is where the
- 38:43Speaker 2: money's at.
- 38:43Speaker 1: It's so funny because I think that I was living
- 38:46Speaker 1: in Vegas during that time, and like Vegas was where
- 38:51Speaker 1: like that was like twenty ten eleven twelve was like
- 38:54Speaker 1: the peak of like whatever you would considered edm out
- 38:57Speaker 1: there yep. But think of the radio. I just think
- 39:01Speaker 1: of pit Bull at that time. Lmfao flow Right, like
- 39:07Speaker 1: Lady gy Gy yep.
- 39:08Speaker 2: That was all the time.
- 39:09Speaker 1: All the hip hop stations were playing Lady God Got Dog.
- 39:12Speaker 1: It was weird and like flow Rider and pit Bull
- 39:16Speaker 1: had the ship in the head they had like that
- 39:18Speaker 1: what was that pit Bull song with Neo the Time
- 39:20Speaker 1: of your Life? Oh my god?
- 39:23Speaker 2: I mean I get I get why they weren't listening
- 39:26Speaker 2: to me because.
- 39:26Speaker 1: But it's it's interesting because like, no shots to flow
- 39:29Speaker 1: Right are like great guy who's been in my club
- 39:30Speaker 1: and shit, like super dope dope artists, but like I
- 39:33Speaker 1: feel like it's like he's gonna eat forever, So it
- 39:36Speaker 1: doesn't really his level of success is insane. I think
- 39:39Speaker 1: he was part owner of that energy. But I think
- 39:42Speaker 1: like there are certain artists where you're like, like, can
- 39:47Speaker 1: you sell twenty thousand tickets? You know what I'm saying
- 39:49Speaker 1: in my head? Or can you sell out a tour?
- 39:51Speaker 1: You know what I mean to me? The hard Selle shit,
- 39:52Speaker 1: It's like I think it's like a lot doper to
- 39:54Speaker 1: build like people who are invested in you personally, because
- 39:57Speaker 1: you can have that connection with your fan base and
- 40:00Speaker 1: it just feels a little more space. But flow Rider
- 40:01Speaker 1: shout out to him.
- 40:02Speaker 2: Yeah, And there was a clip like on my first
- 40:04Speaker 2: album too, on the outro where there was like a
- 40:06Speaker 2: real time disagreement or argument happening in the studio. And
- 40:10Speaker 2: this was like when I first asked to be released
- 40:13Speaker 2: and I was talking to someone who works there, and
- 40:15Speaker 2: that was the conversation. It was just like I could
- 40:17Speaker 2: do this very specific thing and like become that type
- 40:20Speaker 2: of artist, or I could build like a core and
- 40:22Speaker 2: I could like work it a different way. And that
- 40:24Speaker 2: was kind of where we disagreed, and I just went
- 40:26Speaker 2: on about.
- 40:27Speaker 1: So you're in Miami in the time of time.
- 40:30Speaker 2: Yep, I was there.
- 40:31Speaker 1: Oh, South Beach was crazy.
- 40:33Speaker 2: It was, it was all crazy. It's super crazy when
- 40:35Speaker 2: you broke too, because it's like experiencing it happened.
- 40:37Speaker 1: But it's just like, yeah, yeah, dude, trust me. When
- 40:40Speaker 1: I did radio on Tampa and like we'd go to
- 40:42Speaker 1: Miami and I was, you know, making fucking fifty thousand
- 40:45Speaker 1: dollars a year, like struggling like at the time, like
- 40:48Speaker 1: try to support my kids and shit, and it's just like, damn,
- 40:51Speaker 1: this drink is thirty dollars.
- 40:52Speaker 2: Hit crazy. Now, they gave me a lot of money
- 40:54Speaker 2: to throw in the club, and I just look at
- 40:56Speaker 2: it slipping in my pocket, like I'm not throwing this
- 40:58Speaker 2: shit today.
- 40:59Speaker 1: I went through the same era of life, and I'm
- 41:01Speaker 1: kind of like low key still in that era where
- 41:03Speaker 1: if someone gives me their money to throw, I'm gonna
- 41:06Speaker 1: throw some of it from yeah, for sure, I'm gonna
- 41:09Speaker 1: throw a little bit of it for sure, but I'm
- 41:11Speaker 1: definitely gonna come on like yeah nah.
- 41:14Speaker 2: They was giving bread to folks who ain't even eight
- 41:16Speaker 2: that day. So it's like this is like, bro what
- 41:18Speaker 2: I'm not gonna throw this It's a brainer.
- 41:21Speaker 1: You know. Back in the day, I would go to
- 41:22Speaker 1: the strip club when I was super broke, and I
- 41:24Speaker 1: used to DJ at a strip club in Phoenix and
- 41:26Speaker 1: when that motherfuckers would make it rain and the ship
- 41:28Speaker 1: would fall like near me.
- 41:32Speaker 2: The step is slide.
- 41:34Speaker 1: And we got a phone bill paid for it.
- 41:36Speaker 2: I was there, but I was there, and I remember
- 41:39Speaker 2: like the moment when I finally saw him after all
- 41:41Speaker 2: of it too. I think I saw him in the
- 41:42Speaker 2: regular club and I saw him in a strip club.
- 41:44Speaker 1: Did you guys have a moment where yeah, hey man, Yeah.
- 41:46Speaker 2: It was it was all of it was. It wasn't
- 41:47Speaker 2: no pressure. It was just like and also I got
- 41:50Speaker 2: to be able to just have my little, my little
- 41:52Speaker 2: ego moment and just be like, you know, I can.
- 41:54Speaker 1: Do this now, yeah, like oh look I could throw it.
- 41:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I can go to the machine, you know, grab
- 41:58Speaker 2: a little bag and do my thing. So it was
- 41:59Speaker 2: it was nice to be able to like see it
- 42:01Speaker 2: for Did.
- 42:02Speaker 1: You guys ever have like a I guess, like a
- 42:05Speaker 1: convo where it was like, hey man, I know you left,
- 42:08Speaker 1: but I'm proud of you type shit.
- 42:10Speaker 2: I feel like there's something in the back of my
- 42:12Speaker 2: mind that makes me feel like it happened, even if
- 42:15Speaker 2: it was just like a quick DM or something. Yeah,
- 42:18Speaker 2: but never like a real conversation. Like I said, but I.
- 42:21Speaker 1: Think I think he signed Gorillazoh.
- 42:23Speaker 2: Yeah, he signs Oh. I remember when Z came. I
- 42:25Speaker 2: was done there before Zoe came.
- 42:26Speaker 1: So yeah, I remember I was doing radio in Tampa
- 42:28Speaker 1: and he brought Gorillazo to Club Sky and I was like,
- 42:31Speaker 1: Gorillazo and oh Rider just at the ball h what
- 42:35Speaker 1: is life? And Brus just at the bar with a
- 42:37Speaker 1: bottle of tequila. Yep, it's craziness.
- 42:40Speaker 2: Ye eleven to twenty fourteen? For me?
- 42:42Speaker 1: What is did fourteen? It was twenty fourteen? I think
- 42:45Speaker 1: that this happened. What is the most you've thrown out
- 42:47Speaker 1: a strip clubs? I just wonder it's like somebody who's
- 42:50Speaker 1: like a kind of an introvert singer songwriter, you know. Yeah,
- 42:53Speaker 1: I when you're in that mode, because you did put
- 42:55Speaker 1: the sixth that you know, the epe out that was
- 42:57Speaker 1: very much in homage to that.
- 42:58Speaker 2: Yep. And we did a little pop up Magic City
- 43:00Speaker 2: thing out here one time where we took.
- 43:02Speaker 1: Off what was that crazy girls? Yeah? Yeah, crazy crazy.
- 43:06Speaker 2: Close Yes, yep, so we uh I mean, But for me,
- 43:10Speaker 2: I still like in the back of my brain, I
- 43:12Speaker 2: just got my kids there, like right, I got my
- 43:15Speaker 2: kid got tuition right now, Like she's only in fourth grade,
- 43:19Speaker 2: but she goes to a good school. So at most
- 43:22Speaker 2: I'm thinking on a crazy night. I've done like around.
- 43:25Speaker 1: Twenty thousand dollars.
- 43:28Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, And this is like it's a lot,
- 43:30Speaker 2: it's a lot. But when you are, you know, in
- 43:33Speaker 2: collective unison with your guys, it's like, Okay, you get five,
- 43:38Speaker 2: i'll get ten, you get two things. Yeah yeah, And
- 43:41Speaker 2: I don't know, I ain't got nothing to prove to nobody.
- 43:43Speaker 2: So it's just if we go and we have fun,
- 43:46Speaker 2: that's great. But I'm definitely not breaking the bank or
- 43:49Speaker 2: like fucking myself up nowadays.
- 43:52Speaker 1: I just feel like the strip club is a great
- 43:53Speaker 1: place to eat food.
- 43:54Speaker 2: For sure. I'm trying to eat and I'm trying to like.
- 43:57Speaker 1: We don't have I mean, Sam's has okay food, but
- 44:00Speaker 1: doesn't have the you know, like in Phoenix we have Jaguars,
- 44:04Speaker 1: which is like you go there, there's a full kitchen,
- 44:06Speaker 1: like you get whatever the fuck you want. Like Atlanta
- 44:08Speaker 1: obviously the best chicken wings, you know, Lemon Pepper. Yeah,
- 44:10Speaker 1: it was built out of Magic City.
- 44:13Speaker 2: You know.
- 44:13Speaker 1: Well listen, man, the new album's coming out is May
- 44:15Speaker 1: twenty second.
- 44:16Speaker 2: Yeah, May twenty second.
- 44:18Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to it. Hopefully we don't have to
- 44:20Speaker 1: wait three more years for the next one. But it's
- 44:22Speaker 1: all good.
- 44:22Speaker 2: No no, no, no, you know how look.
- 44:23Speaker 1: I'll take I'll take black albums as they come.
- 44:25Speaker 2: Now, the motor has been running, and like I've been
- 44:27Speaker 2: cooking up with my boy Chottish Major in Atlanta, and
- 44:31Speaker 2: this is the like the easiest has been to make
- 44:33Speaker 2: music for me in a long time. So like the
- 44:35Speaker 2: way that we kind of cranked this project out, even
- 44:37Speaker 2: though it took the last maybe year and a half
- 44:40Speaker 2: to polish, we had ran through like half of the
- 44:43Speaker 2: album in probably like three months. So oh wow, I
- 44:45Speaker 2: know that we can like really dial in and make
- 44:48Speaker 2: some more music.
- 44:49Speaker 1: Is it? Like I always wonder when you are such
- 44:51Speaker 1: a like creative and you also can record yourself and
- 44:55Speaker 1: you're like I feel like for certain artists, like they
- 44:59Speaker 1: don't really have an option when the album's over. It's like, well,
- 45:01Speaker 1: like we got ten songs, it's over, Like, yeah, I
- 45:03Speaker 1: don't want to book any more studio time. But for you,
- 45:05Speaker 1: like when do you know like it's done?
- 45:10Speaker 2: Hmmm, I guess never, because.
- 45:14Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying. Yeah, it's like never.
- 45:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 45:16Speaker 1: Essentially, it's like just like you told me, all right,
- 45:18Speaker 1: have to be like hey man.
- 45:20Speaker 2: I'm telling you like to this day, there are songs
- 45:22Speaker 2: that things have been approved and they're out and their
- 45:25Speaker 2: love and whatever, but I'm like them, I wish I
- 45:27Speaker 2: could have just like added a couple more backgrounds on right, right.
- 45:30Speaker 1: Right right, and you'll hear it. Yeah, because you're a perfectionist.
- 45:33Speaker 2: You hear also like your ears, just I feel like
- 45:35Speaker 2: they get sharper as you get older. So like when
- 45:37Speaker 2: I thought I was popping my shit in twenty sixteen,
- 45:39Speaker 2: it was like I was in a sense, but when
- 45:41Speaker 2: I listen back now, I'm like my my voice control
- 45:44Speaker 2: and like my tone and everything just has mature. So
- 45:47Speaker 2: by default you listen to it and you're like.
- 45:49Speaker 1: Yeah, you get demo itis.
- 45:52Speaker 2: I've had it. Yeah, I've had it, Like first.
- 45:54Speaker 1: Album, playing themselves out of hit records with that shit. Yeah,
- 45:57Speaker 1: they're like, man, it's old. It's like no one's heard
- 45:59Speaker 1: this song but you and your friends. Yeah, I promise it.
- 46:01Speaker 1: I've had the biggest, huge artists play me songs and
- 46:05Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, this is the number one record, And
- 46:07Speaker 1: then I'll see them like two years later and I'm like, hey,
- 46:09Speaker 1: do you remember when you played me that song? Oh? Yeah, man,
- 46:12Speaker 1: that shiit. Now we decide not to put it.
- 46:14Speaker 2: Like what, there's one on the album right now, that's
- 46:17Speaker 2: that was like I feel like at minimum four years
- 46:21Speaker 2: in the making.
- 46:22Speaker 1: Fire which song the one with the Okay, so when
- 46:26Speaker 1: I hear that, I'll know that is a four year
- 46:27Speaker 1: in the making record.
- 46:28Speaker 2: Yeah, that's vintage. I love it advantage.
- 46:31Speaker 1: Is there anything special plan for the ten year anniversary
- 46:33Speaker 1: of Free Black?
- 46:34Speaker 2: Yeah, we always do a concert, so I'm pretty sure
- 46:37Speaker 2: we'll do something in Atlanta. And aside from the ten
- 46:42Speaker 2: year anniversary concert, we celebrating all year, so whatever, like
- 46:46Speaker 2: like a vinyl drop, Yeah, like I want to do
- 46:48Speaker 2: a vinyl drop. I want to do some more merch
- 46:51Speaker 2: and yeah, any like activations or events we can put together.
- 46:53Speaker 2: I'm pretty sure we'll figure to make it fun.
- 46:55Speaker 1: Kick it with a bear for all time sake.
- 46:57Speaker 2: I know the bear on the cover passed away, so.
- 47:01Speaker 1: I'm sure you live in California. We have bears here.
- 47:03Speaker 2: Yeah, No, that was that was a Hollywood.
- 47:05Speaker 1: You've got a lot to live for right now, though,
- 47:06Speaker 1: don't just kick it with bears all right? Well, listen, man,
