- 0:12Hello friends, it is shown here. It is Friday.
- 0:18It is Friday. You have made it to the end of
- 0:21another week. And for most of us, today is not
- 0:23a day where we rush off to work. Today is a day where we might
- 0:28gather with our communities, come together to commemorate
- 0:31this day, worship together in amazement and awe, and what our
- 0:37God has done for us today. Today is Good Friday.
- 0:42Good because of what God has done for us today.
- 0:46Good, because it's only because of today that we can come before
- 0:53our God. We do not have to read the book
- 0:55of Exodus and Leviticus to work out how we need to be wholly
- 1:00before our God. We just show up.
- 1:03We just show up because Jesus has done all that work for us
- 1:07and today is the day we read all about what work that is.
- 1:12It is a brutal reading. It is hard, but it is testament
- 1:18of how much we are loved and what our God is willing to go
- 1:22through for us, their friends. With a heavy hearts, we read
- 1:27this story recorded in Mark chapter 15.
- 1:43Very early in the morning, the leading priests, the elders and
- 1:48the teachers of religious law, the entire High Council, met to
- 1:52discuss their next step. They bound Jesus, led him away
- 1:58and took him to pilot the Roman governor.
- 2:02Pilot asked. Jesus, are you the King of the
- 2:06Jews? Jesus replied.
- 2:09You have said it. Then the leading priests kept
- 2:14accusing him of many crimes and Pilot asked him, Aren't you
- 2:18going to answer them? What about all these charges
- 2:23they are bringing against you? But Jesus said nothing much to
- 2:28pilots surprise. Now it was the Governor's custom
- 2:32each year during the Passover celebration to release 1
- 2:35prisoner, anyone the people requested.
- 2:39One of the prisoners at that time was Barabbas, A
- 2:42revolutionary who had committed murder in an uprising.
- 2:46The crowd went to Pilot and asked him to release a prisoner,
- 2:49as usual. Would you like me to release to
- 2:53you this King of the Jews? Pilot asked for he realised by
- 2:59now that the leading priests had arrested Jesus out of envy.
- 3:03But at this point, the leading priests stirred up the crowd to
- 3:08demand the release of Barabbas instead of Jesus.
- 3:12Pilot asked them Then what should I do with this man you
- 3:17call the King of the Jews? They shouted back.
- 3:22Crucify him. Why?
- 3:25Pilot demanded. What crime has he committed?
- 3:30But the mob roared even louder. Crucify him said.
- 3:36To pacify the crowd, Pilot released Barabbas to them.
- 3:40He ordered Jesus flogged with a lead tipped whip, then turned
- 3:45him over to the Roman soldiers to be crucified.
- 3:50The soldiers took Jesus into the courtyard of the governor's
- 3:53headquarters, called Pretorium, and called out the entire
- 3:58regiment. They dressed him in a purple
- 4:00robe, and they wove thorn branches into a crown and put it
- 4:05on his head. Then they saluted him and
- 4:08taunted Hail King of the Jews, and they struck him on the head
- 4:14with the raid stick, spit on him, and dropped to their knees
- 4:19and mock worship. When they were finally tired of
- 4:23mocking him, they took off the purple robe and put his own
- 4:28clothes on him again. Then they led him away to be
- 4:32crucified. A passerby named Simon, who is
- 4:38from Cyrene, was coming in from the countryside just then and
- 4:43the soldiers forced him to carry Jesus Cross.
- 4:46Simon was the father of Alexander and Rufus, and they
- 4:51brought Jesus to a place called Golgotha, which means place of
- 4:56the skull. They offered him wine, drugged
- 5:00with MUR, but he refused it. Then the soldiers nailed him to
- 5:05the cross. They divided his clothes and
- 5:08threw dice to decide who would get each piece.
- 5:12It was 9:00 in the morning when they crucified him, a sign
- 5:17announce the charge against him. It read The King of the Jews.
- 5:24Two revolutionaries were crucified with him, one on his
- 5:27right and one on his left. The people passing by shouted
- 5:32abuse, shaking their heads in mockery.
- 5:35Huh. Look at you now, they yelled at
- 5:38him. You said you were going to
- 5:39destroy the temple and rebuild them three days.
- 5:43Well then save yourself and come down from the cross.
- 5:48The leading priests and teachers of religious law also mocked
- 5:51Jesus. He saved others.
- 5:54They scoffed. Pit, he can't save himself.
- 5:58Let this Messiah, this King of Israel, come down from the cross
- 6:03so he can see it and believe him.
- 6:07Even the men who were crucified with Jesus ridiculed him.
- 6:12At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until 3:00.
- 6:18Then at 3:00, Jesus called out with a loud voice.
- 6:24Eloy Eloy, Lema Sabachthani. Which means, my God, my God, why
- 6:35have you abandoned me? Some of the bystanders
- 6:39misunderstood and thought it was calling for the prophet Elijah.
- 6:43One of them ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, holding
- 6:47it up to him on a Reed stick so he could drink.
- 6:51White, He said. Let's see whether Elijah comes
- 6:54to take him down. Then Jesus uttered another loud
- 6:59cry and breathed his last, and the curtain in the sanctuary of
- 7:07the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
- 7:13When the Roman officer who stood facing him saw how he had died,
- 7:17he exclaimed. This man truly was the Son of
- 7:22God. Some women were there, watching
- 7:26from a distance, including Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of
- 7:32James the Younger, and of Joseph and Salome.
- 7:37They had been followers of Jesus and had cared for him while he
- 7:41was in Galilee. Many other women who had come
- 7:45with him to Jerusalem were also there.
- 7:50This all happened on Friday, the day of preparation, the day
- 7:54before the Sabbath. As evening approached, Joseph of
- 7:59Arimathea took a risk and went to Pilot and asked for Jesus's
- 8:04body. Joseph was an honoured member of
- 8:07the High Council and he was waiting for the Kingdom of God
- 8:11to come. Pilot couldn't believe that
- 8:15Jesus was already dead, so he called for the Roman officer and
- 8:19asked if he had died. Yet the officer confirmed that
- 8:23Jesus was dead, so Pilot told Joseph he could have the body.
- 8:30Joseph bought a long sheet of linen cloth, then took Jesus
- 8:35body down from the cross, wrapped it in the cloth and laid
- 8:40it in a tomb that he had carved out of the rock.
- 8:44Then he rolled a stone in front of the entrance, Mary Magdalene
- 8:49and Mary the mother of Joseph. So where Jesus's body was laid,
- 9:06Lord, in this time of silence, ahead we just come before you,
- 9:11and aware of all you have done for us,
- 9:55Thank you for your sacrifice. We pray this in your precious
- 10:02Name Jesus. Amen.
