- 0:06(Transcribed by TurboScribe.ai. Go Unlimited to remove this message.) Hi, I'm Chris.
- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:13In our current series, Imagining Work, we've been
- 0:16asking a question, what story about work am
- 0:19I living in?
- 0:20And we want to live in the story
- 0:21about work that God is telling on the
- 0:23pages of the Bible, so we've been looking
- 0:25at key images.
- 0:26We've got our final image in this episode,
- 0:29Emissary.
- 0:30What does it mean for us to be
- 0:31emissaries of Christ in our workplaces?
- 0:38Now emissary is an old-fashioned word.
- 0:40It's basically a synonym for ambassador or messenger,
- 0:43just somebody who's sent by someone else to
- 0:45do something.
- 0:46So I thought I might use a historical
- 0:47example.
- 0:48This is from about a hundred years before
- 0:50the life of Jesus, and it's within China.
- 0:55There was a general who had been expanding
- 0:57his territory that he oversaw, and his name
- 1:00was Ban Chao, and he sent an emissary
- 1:02named Gan Ying to travel all the way
- 1:05to Rome.
- 1:06So Gan Ying set out and moved west,
- 1:09and nobody from that Chinese empire had ever
- 1:12made direct contact with the Roman empire before.
- 1:16So Gan Ying was a trailblazer.
- 1:18He was sent to make a connection that
- 1:20had never been there before between these two
- 1:22empires, these two kingdoms.
- 1:24He made it as far as what was
- 1:26called the Western Sea, which we think means
- 1:27the Mediterranean Sea, but we're not sure.
- 1:30And then he didn't know how to get
- 1:31to Rome from there, so he ended up
- 1:32going back to China.
- 1:33But even though he didn't make it to
- 1:35Rome, that trail that he blazed, he and
- 1:38his companions, helped begin what became known as
- 1:41the Silk Road, the trade between the Chinese
- 1:44empire and the Roman empire.
- 1:46And so silk, which had been invented in
- 1:47China, was traded.
- 1:49Spices were traded.
- 1:50There was all this economic exchange.
- 1:51These two kingdoms that had been totally separate
- 1:53came together because there was this emissary who
- 1:57blazed the trail.
- 2:00I think that's a great image for us
- 2:01to bear in mind when we think about
- 2:02what it means for us to be emissaries
- 2:04of Christ.
- 2:06There's two kingdoms, two empires, that scripture speaks
- 2:09of.
- 2:10When we look at Paul's letter to the
- 2:11Colossians in chapter one, verse 13, he puts
- 2:15it like this, for God has rescued us
- 2:17from the dominion of darkness and brought us
- 2:20into the kingdom of the Son he loves.
- 2:24So, Paul's mapping out two empires, two kingdoms
- 2:27that are opposed to each other.
- 2:29There's the dominion of darkness, and there's the
- 2:31kingdom of the Son God loves.
- 2:34And all of us started out in the
- 2:36dominion of darkness.
- 2:37All of us were citizens of a dominion
- 2:39of darkness.
- 2:40But God sent Christ as an emissary from
- 2:43this other kingdom into our world, into our
- 2:46midst, in order to show us a different
- 2:49way, in order to make contact with this
- 2:51other empire, this other kingdom.
- 2:54And so when we come into contact with
- 2:56Christ, when we put our faith in him,
- 2:57when we begin to follow him, when we're
- 2:59baptized into his name and join his community
- 3:01in the church, we are transferred, we are
- 3:04rescued, we enter into the kingdom of the
- 3:08Son God loves.
- 3:10It's a new identity for us, a new
- 3:12community for us, a new citizenship for us.
- 3:16But in that exchange, being rescued from the
- 3:21dominion of darkness and brought into the kingdom
- 3:23of the Son God loves, there's a tension,
- 3:26because the dominion of darkness is the world
- 3:29outside the kingdom of God, people who have
- 3:32not yet come alive to God in Christ,
- 3:34people who are going about their business just
- 3:36as normal, as usual.
- 3:39And so we will interact with those people
- 3:42pretty much every day, depending on our life
- 3:44circumstances and who we have friendships with and
- 3:47who we see at work, we're interacting constantly
- 3:50with other human beings who are still in
- 3:53the dominion of darkness.
- 3:57And because of that difference, that sense that
- 3:59we believe we really have been rescued from
- 4:01something, and we really believe there are other
- 4:03human beings who haven't yet been rescued from
- 4:04that thing, the temptation is for us to
- 4:07be sectarian, for us to be holier than
- 4:10thou, to think, oh, I'm in the kingdom
- 4:12of the Son God loves, but they're still
- 4:13in the dominion of darkness, to make ourselves
- 4:16superior to them.
- 4:18But of course, this is against the logic
- 4:20of the gospel.
- 4:21We ourselves were rescued from the dominion of
- 4:23darkness, not because of anything good we had
- 4:25done, but because of God's grace for us
- 4:27in Jesus Christ.
- 4:29And so when we look at somebody else
- 4:30who's still in the dominion of darkness, we
- 4:32can't feel pride, we can't feel superiority, we
- 4:35recognize ourselves, we're just seeing ourselves in that
- 4:38person.
- 4:39And so a combative or a holier than
- 4:42thou, or even an us-them attitude is
- 4:44really inappropriate when we're interacting with other people
- 4:47who have not yet made that transition into
- 4:50the kingdom of the Son God loves.
- 4:53Rather than making other people feel inferior, it's
- 4:56actually the opposite.
- 4:58It's as we show special honor and special
- 5:00love towards other people because we see them
- 5:02with God's eyes, because we see them as
- 5:04the precious human beings that they are, that
- 5:06we begin to give them a hint of
- 5:09a kingdom that transcends normal pettiness, normal social
- 5:13interactions where people don't treat each other very
- 5:15well.
- 5:15It's as we bring something with us from
- 5:18the kingdom that we're a part of that
- 5:20we give people a hint and invitation that
- 5:23that kingdom could be real and that they
- 5:25could experience it.
- 5:27So when we think about this in the
- 5:28workplace context, I really love how Timothy Keller
- 5:31puts it in his book, Every Good Endeavor.
- 5:34We've had some quotes from this book and
- 5:35other episodes already, but he specifically addresses this
- 5:38temptation to be sectarian in the way we
- 5:41interact with with other coworkers.
- 5:44He says, Christians should not be seen as
- 5:45sectarian.
- 5:46Many Christians fail to identify themselves as Christians
- 5:49to their colleagues.
- 5:50They simply blend in.
- 5:52Others let their faith be known, but speak
- 5:53and act in a way that makes nonbelievers
- 5:55feel subtly or overtly marginalized or disdained.
- 5:59But if we have an integrated and non
- 6:01-dualistic understanding of work, we know that many
- 6:04people who are not believers are, through God's
- 6:06providence and common grace, given the gifts to
- 6:08do excellent work.
- 6:09So we will respect and treat those who
- 6:11believe differently as valued equals in the workplace.
- 6:15And at the same time, we will be
- 6:16unashamed to be identified with Jesus.
- 6:19If a Christian avoids both of these errors,
- 6:22he or she will be striking an unusual
- 6:24and healthy balance.
- 6:27So you kind of see these these two
- 6:29extremes that Timothy Keller is painting.
- 6:31He's saying, on the one hand, we can
- 6:33just blend in, right?
- 6:34It can we can make ourselves look as
- 6:36though we're part of the dominion of darkness.
- 6:37Nobody even knows that we're identified with Jesus.
- 6:40On the other hand, we can be sectarian
- 6:42in the way that we attempt to be
- 6:44identified with Jesus.
- 6:45We can be superior.
- 6:46We can reject other people.
- 6:48But the healthy balance between those two extremes
- 6:50is to really engage the people with us,
- 6:53to love them, to honor them as equals
- 6:54and to be unashamed to be identified with
- 6:58Jesus, to make it known that we're identified
- 7:00with Jesus.
- 7:02And this fits exactly what Jesus taught his
- 7:04disciples.
- 7:06Very famous passage that will be familiar to
- 7:07you comes in the beginning of the Sermon
- 7:09on the Mount, when Jesus speaks of his
- 7:11disciples being light.
- 7:13This is Matthew, chapter five, starting in verse
- 7:1514.
- 7:16Jesus said, you are the light of the
- 7:18world.
- 7:19A city on a hill cannot be hidden.
- 7:22Neither do people light a lamp and put
- 7:23it under a bowl.
- 7:24Instead, they put it on its stand and
- 7:26it gives light to everyone in the house.
- 7:29In the same way, let your light shine
- 7:31before others that they may see your good
- 7:34deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
- 7:38So it's really striking what Jesus says here.
- 7:40There's a couple of things that are actually
- 7:43different than what we might think.
- 7:44Jesus doesn't say, try really hard to let
- 7:47your light shine, right?
- 7:48He says, just let your light shine.
- 7:50He doesn't say a city on a hill
- 7:52shouldn't be hidden.
- 7:53He says a city on a hill cannot
- 7:55be hidden.
- 7:56Jesus is saying that when the light of
- 7:59God is inside of you, it is inevitable
- 8:01that that will be visible to other people.
- 8:03It's not something that you have to stir
- 8:05up from within yourself.
- 8:06It's just real.
- 8:08If you are really living with the light
- 8:11of God inside of you, that will be
- 8:13visible to the people around you.
- 8:15They will see your good deeds.
- 8:17And then what's the response?
- 8:18They will see your good deeds and praise
- 8:20your Father in heaven.
- 8:22People will draw a connection.
- 8:24They'll connect the dots between, wow, this human
- 8:27being lives this way.
- 8:28This human being has this kind of light
- 8:29in the way that they interact with other
- 8:31people and the way that they do their
- 8:32work.
- 8:32That must come from somewhere.
- 8:34That must come from some sort of source.
- 8:37It's interesting that Jesus doesn't say, talk to
- 8:39everybody about the light, right?
- 8:41He just says, let your light shine.
- 8:44And people will begin to connect the dots
- 8:46for themselves.
- 8:47Now, that doesn't mean we never talk, right?
- 8:48But it starts from simply, what's our character?
- 8:51What is our way of doing life?
- 8:53What kind of light are we carrying with
- 8:55us into our workplace?
- 8:58And so again, using this metaphor of the
- 9:01kingdoms, of the empires where we've made this
- 9:03transition, we are emissaries of light in the
- 9:08dominion of darkness.
- 9:09We're still in the world.
- 9:10We're still in relationship with all these human
- 9:12beings who have not yet made that transition
- 9:15to the kingdom of the sun God loves.
- 9:17And so we are the emissaries, the representatives,
- 9:20the ambassadors of Christ in those relationships.
- 9:24Now, that may sound really inspiring, but if
- 9:28you're honest with yourself, you may say, I
- 9:31don't know, I kind of feel like a
- 9:32two watt bulb.
- 9:34If I'm supposed to give people a sense
- 9:36of what the kingdom of light is all
- 9:37about, they're going to get a pretty garbled
- 9:39message looking at me.
- 9:41And if you feel that way, that's a
- 9:43sign that you're having genuine humility about your
- 9:45own flaws, your own weaknesses, the way that
- 9:48all of us fail to reflect the glory
- 9:50of God and the way we live our
- 9:52lives.
- 9:53But I want to give a word of
- 9:54encouragement here, and that's that if you think
- 9:57you're a two watt bulb, you are a
- 9:59solar powered two watt bulb.
- 10:02You know, occasionally there are street lights like
- 10:04this where there's actually a little mini solar
- 10:06panel attached to the street light because it's
- 10:08not hooked up to the electrical grid.
- 10:09It actually soaks up light during the day
- 10:12when the sun is out, and then it
- 10:13can be a street light at night when
- 10:16the sun is gone.
- 10:17And that's what it's like for us.
- 10:19We only pass along the light that we
- 10:21have received from God himself.
- 10:24It's not something, again, that depends ultimately on
- 10:26us or our strengths.
- 10:28It depends on God's goodness.
- 10:30When we open up ourselves to God's light
- 10:32and receive it, we are able to be
- 10:36transformed from the inside out.
- 10:37And then that's what we're carrying with us
- 10:39into our interactions with other people.
- 10:42The way that Paul puts it in Ephesians
- 10:435, 14 is, Awake, O sleeper, rise from
- 10:47the dead, and Christ will shine on you.
- 10:51The only way that we can be emissaries
- 10:52of light is if we let Christ shine
- 10:54on us in the first place.
- 10:57And as we soak up Jesus' light, we
- 10:59will be able to share it naturally with
- 11:01the people around us.
- 11:02We'll be unashamed to be identified with Jesus,
- 11:05as Timothy Keller says.
- 11:08So what does that look like in practical
- 11:10terms?
- 11:10Well, one thing is to speak of Jesus
- 11:13very naturally in your conversations with others.
- 11:16Just an example, I work at a food
- 11:18bank.
- 11:18It was started by a Catholic sister, and
- 11:21many Christians have been involved over the years,
- 11:22but it's not a specifically Christian or faith
- 11:25-based organization currently.
- 11:27And we were doing a training on diversity,
- 11:30equity and inclusion.
- 11:31And people said, hey, what's a stereotype that
- 11:33people might have about you?
- 11:34But it doesn't really apply to you.
- 11:36So it's kind of following the model of
- 11:38I am blank, but blank.
- 11:41And so I spoke up and I said,
- 11:43well, I'm a I'm a pretty traditional evangelical
- 11:47Christian, but I'm not a Republican.
- 11:50And, you know, it got a round of
- 11:51laughs, right?
- 11:51And I don't say this in order to
- 11:53make political commentary.
- 11:54I'm not a Democrat either.
- 11:57But just to point out, I was willing
- 11:59to say in this company-wide gathering, I'm
- 12:03a pretty traditional evangelical Christian, right?
- 12:06I wanted to identify with Jesus in that
- 12:09way.
- 12:09And I was unashamed to do that in
- 12:12that moment.
- 12:13Now, part of that is I've already been
- 12:15there for over a year.
- 12:16I have friendships with a lot of people
- 12:17in that room.
- 12:17People know who I am.
- 12:19They know my character.
- 12:20And so I know I'm not going to
- 12:21scare them off by saying that.
- 12:22At least I hope I didn't scare anyone
- 12:24off by saying that.
- 12:25But for me, that was a natural way
- 12:27to just be identified with Jesus in that
- 12:29moment.
- 12:30So I encourage you, as you have opportunities,
- 12:33don't hesitate to just be yourself as a
- 12:35Christian in your workplace.
- 12:36Somebody asks how your weekend was.
- 12:38You can mention what you did at church,
- 12:40right?
- 12:40Don't expect them to necessarily connect or be
- 12:43super curious about your faith right off the
- 12:45bat, although it's wonderful if they are.
- 12:47But just be yourself in the way that
- 12:48you speak about Jesus.
- 12:51And then second, as Jesus himself suggests, it's
- 12:54even more important that our deeds reflect the
- 12:57light.
- 12:57It's as we interact with our co-workers
- 12:59doing our jobs while being trustworthy people in
- 13:02relationship with our co-workers that they come
- 13:05to see that there's something about us that
- 13:07really matters.
- 13:08That's really significant.
- 13:10And so for me, that looks like really
- 13:13being attentive to what's going on in my
- 13:15heart during the workday.
- 13:17Am I tempted towards an attitude of complaint?
- 13:19Am I tempted to ignore uncomfortable emotions?
- 13:23Like if I'm really disappointed or sad about
- 13:25something.
- 13:26This comes back to what we talked about
- 13:27in our first episode, Reconciling With Our Pain
- 13:30at Work.
- 13:30That we have to let Jesus continue to
- 13:33shine his light on our hearts of our
- 13:35whole experience at work so that we're relating
- 13:37to other people in healthy ways.
- 13:40And then a final way to think about
- 13:42how to be an emissary of light in
- 13:44your workplace is to be that person that
- 13:47others can go to in a time of
- 13:49crisis.
- 13:50This connects a little bit with what we
- 13:52were talking about in terms of being a
- 13:53friend, right?
- 13:54You want to be that co-worker where
- 13:55somebody's having a hard time and they just
- 13:57need somebody to talk to, you are a
- 13:59safe person to talk to.
- 14:01So you can do that by listening well
- 14:02to others, by being relationally open to others,
- 14:05by being appropriate, vulnerable about your own difficulties
- 14:07with other people so that they don't feel
- 14:09afraid or judged if they share about their
- 14:11difficulties with you.
- 14:13And if you become that confidant, that trusted
- 14:16friend who people are willing to come to
- 14:18in a moment of crisis, that will open
- 14:20up opportunities for you to share your faith
- 14:22in very natural ways in those conversations.
- 14:26And again, it will always be in sync
- 14:27with what they already know of your character
- 14:29because of the friendship that you've built already.
- 14:33So you are an emissary of light in
- 14:35your workplace.
- 14:36And the way that you do that most
- 14:37faithfully is by letting Christ shine on you.
- 14:41And as you do that, the opportunities you
- 14:43have to be an emissary of light will
- 14:45develop naturally and organically in your work relationships.
- 14:49You don't have to be afraid.
- 14:50Even if you just feel like a two
- 14:51-watt bulb, you're a two-watt bulb powered
- 14:53by the powerful son of Jesus life himself.
- 15:01Lord Jesus, you are the son.
- 15:03You are the light that came into the
- 15:05world.
- 15:06And we want to be emissaries of light
- 15:08in our workplaces.
- 15:10Show us how to let our light shine
- 15:12and to trust that it's true that a
- 15:14city on a hill cannot be hidden.
- 15:17We pray that people would see our good
- 15:18works and praise your Father in heaven.
- 15:22Do your work in us as we do
- 15:24our work with you.
- 15:30Thanks for listening.
