- 0:00Speaker 1: Friday night, Miami absolutely rolled Stanford much to no one's surprise,
- 0:06Speaker 1: but I do want to talk about a couple of
- 0:07Speaker 1: different angles in this game. A couple of different things
- 0:09Speaker 1: about this. We are presented by prize picks here at
- 0:12Speaker 1: the power to make sure that you are subscribed well
- 0:14Speaker 1: over 200 people in here watching live. We appreciate you
- 0:17Speaker 1: this morning for joining us on a Sunday. Miami winning
- 0:22Speaker 1: by a lot and winning comfortably, not any surprise at all.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Could they have two Heisman Trophy finalists? Because I know
- 0:30Speaker 1: you're going to split the vote when you have a
- 0:32Speaker 1: quarterback and a wide receiver. But my week one overreaction
- 0:37Speaker 1: for them is that I think they have two. No,
- 0:40Speaker 1: I don't think they have two guys that deserve to
- 0:43Speaker 1: be in New York City for the Heisman, in my opinion.
- 0:45Speaker 1: The only question is whether or not they split too
- 0:47Speaker 1: many votes and it hurts both of them. Malachi, Tony,
- 0:50Speaker 1: we had the conversation of whether or not he was
- 0:52Speaker 1: as good as, or where he ranked with Jeremiah Smith.
- 0:55Speaker 1: And I don't know that I'm fully ready to say
- 0:57Speaker 1: that he's better. They're so different, even playing the same position,
- 1:02Speaker 1: but I, I, it ain't one and two to me.
- 1:04Speaker 1: It's one a and one B it's one a one
- 1:06Speaker 1: B a, he is. And I'll hear any argument that
- 1:10Speaker 1: you want to have that he's better. I'm not even
- 1:12Speaker 1: picking one because you cannot lose with either guy. He,
- 1:16Speaker 1: you want to play Miami did not run the ball
- 1:18Speaker 1: effectively and, And Mario got on that. Some of that
- 1:20Speaker 1: is Stanford just saying, hey, we're not going to let you.
- 1:22Speaker 1: We're going to crowd the box. My gosh, let them
- 1:25Speaker 1: run the ball. Because at least that takes more time
- 1:28Speaker 1: off the clock. Do not, to the other 11 teams
- 1:31Speaker 1: on Miami's schedule this year, do not. let Malachi Tony
- 1:35Speaker 1: do what he just did against Stanford because he can
- 1:37Speaker 1: do it every single time covering him one-on-one and not press.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Like you can't press, you can't play soft. He's as
- 1:43Speaker 1: good of a route runner as he is with the
- 1:44Speaker 1: ball in his hands. He is obviously got quickness and
- 1:47Speaker 1: speed and shiftiness. And my goodness, is he not insane?
- 1:52Speaker 1: And Mensah to come out here and look like he did.
- 1:56Speaker 1: obviously hooking up with bar Kate, hooking up with the
- 1:58Speaker 1: tight end, hooking up with Tony plenty of times. I
- 2:02Speaker 1: know it was Stanford. I know they had a lot
- 2:03Speaker 1: of guys out, but my gosh, they looked for real.
- 2:06Speaker 1: And they're, you know, my, again, my takeaway is that
- 2:10Speaker 1: Tony is just, he's insane. Last night should have been
- 2:13Speaker 1: his or Friday night should have been his very first game. Oh,
- 2:16Speaker 1: people forget. He reclassified.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:19Speaker 1: He should, he should have been playing as a high
- 2:21Speaker 1: school senior last year. And in his, well, it should
- 2:23Speaker 1: have been his first game. He sets a record that
- 2:26Speaker 1: had stood since 1984 with receiving yards for Miami. You
- 2:31Speaker 1: think about Michael Irvin and you think about Andre Johnson,
- 2:33Speaker 1: you think about all the guys they've had. He broke
- 2:35Speaker 1: a record that had stood for almost double his age.
- 2:38Speaker 3: No.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Quadrant triple his age.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:41Speaker 1: So ridiculous. Malachi, Tony. If the Heisman was this week,
- 2:47Speaker 1: I think he's my winner.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Tom, do you want to go or do you want
- 2:50Speaker 2: me to go?
- 2:51Speaker 1: I'll get right back to the clip, but first I
- 2:52Speaker 1: want to give some love to Prize Picks over on
- 2:55Speaker 1: the live show. We picked all of these picks that
- 2:59Speaker 1: you're seeing there on the screen. Make sure that you

- 3:09Speaker 1: about everything. So go check that out. We appreciate PrizePix
- 3:12Speaker 1: for their support. Now back to the clip.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Okay. I mean, like, you consider the level of competition, sure,
- 3:18Speaker 3: and the points that you guys made, at least from
- 3:19Speaker 3: a defensive standpoint for Miami. multiple starting offensive linemen for
- 3:24Speaker 3: Stanford unavailable in this game. And their only data point
- 3:27Speaker 3: was a victory against Hawaii. So it's like, okay, what
- 3:29Speaker 3: is Stanford really? Time will tell. Jury's still out, I think,
- 3:33Speaker 3: on the defensive line, replacing the pieces from last year.
- 3:36Speaker 3: So I'm still curious to see how Miami answers those
- 3:39Speaker 3: questions as the year goes on.
- 3:40Speaker 1: But still, this was a really solid performance.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Offensively, just felt different than it did last year which
- 3:46Speaker 3: is natural considering the turnover on the roster and that
- 3:49Speaker 3: they just didn't really need the running game but if
- 3:51Speaker 3: you take away three carries of 19 10 and 9
- 3:55Speaker 3: they averaged 2.8 yards per carry and i think there's
- 3:59Speaker 3: some new pieces along the offensive line they're still piecing
- 4:02Speaker 3: together so it's like all right cool like you just
- 4:04Speaker 3: It's early, so you give them a little bit of
- 4:06Speaker 3: a break there, and it's like, yeah, you threw the
- 4:08Speaker 3: ball for 400 yards, so you're not terribly concerned about
- 4:12Speaker 3: running the football in this situation. So have the offensive
- 4:15Speaker 3: line and defensive line taking the strides they need to
- 4:19Speaker 3: take coming off of last season, the pieces you lost.
- 4:22Speaker 3: Mensah looked at advertised play. Malachi Toney hitting multiple Heisman poses,
- 4:27Speaker 3: by the way, just like make it very clear. This
- 4:29Speaker 3: is about yourself and not this year. Right. Just making
- 4:33Speaker 3: it abundantly clear what your focus is on and not
- 4:36Speaker 3: the team goal. Right. That's interesting from week one. Good
- 4:39Speaker 3: for you, Malachi. Malachi looks fantastic. Darian Mensah. I can't
- 4:45Speaker 3: wait to see more because if it's an offense that
- 4:47Speaker 3: is force feeding Malachi Toney, I understand that. What's going
- 4:51Speaker 3: to happen against Notre Dame, which was really the best
- 4:55Speaker 3: competition you have on the schedule, where it's like, hey,
- 4:57Speaker 3: we're going to take away number one. That's what I'm
- 4:59Speaker 3: curious about with Darian Mensah. But I still expect him
- 5:02Speaker 3: to be able to get the ball around. I just, again,
- 5:04Speaker 3: the turnover every year, just because it's the same laundry
- 5:08Speaker 3: and the same logo, doesn't mean they're going to do
- 5:10Speaker 3: the exact same things they did last year. There might
- 5:13Speaker 3: have been the expectation that they'll run the hell out
- 5:14Speaker 3: of the football like they did last year quite well.
- 5:17Speaker 3: They might not need to do that this year. And
- 5:19Speaker 3: they also might figure out this running game as the
- 5:22Speaker 3: season goes on. Not to say Stanford gave them issues.
- 5:25Speaker 3: They did whatever they wanted. So I'm just wait and
- 5:28Speaker 3: see when it comes to the offensive and defensive lines
- 5:31Speaker 3: for Miami.
- 5:32Speaker 1: I thought the defensive line, just very quickly to counter that,
- 5:34Speaker 1: I thought the defensive line only getting one sack was
- 5:36Speaker 1: still really, really good. They impacted multiple plays. And so
- 5:42Speaker 1: I have a little more confidence in that side than
- 5:45Speaker 1: I do the offensive line. There were several holding calls
- 5:48Speaker 1: that Stanford was called for. due to that pass rush,
- 5:51Speaker 1: there were several plays where, um, quarterback had to just
- 5:55Speaker 1: get rid of the ball and throw it away because
- 5:56Speaker 1: that pass rush was coming or through a pretty poor pass. Um,
- 6:00Speaker 1: on the office side, I do agree with you. I
- 6:03Speaker 1: want to see more out of the running game last year. Um,
- 6:06Speaker 1: they didn't have a hundred yards rushing against FSU, but
- 6:09Speaker 1: it's because FSU played a billion guys in the box
- 6:11Speaker 1: and said, okay, beat us passing. And Malachi Tony said, absolutely.
- 6:15Speaker 1: So I, I think that is kind of a benefit
- 6:17Speaker 1: for Miami too. Cole is that they can, they they're multiple, right?
- 6:22Speaker 1: Like you want to, do you want to stack the box?
- 6:24Speaker 1: They are completely fine throwing it. You want to play back.
- 6:28Speaker 1: They'll run it down your throat. Um, but I do
- 6:31Speaker 1: think you want to see it. I do think you,
- 6:33Speaker 1: you know, like, let's see it happen. And I don't know, man,
- 6:35Speaker 1: we kind of looked at that Clemson game is like, okay, well,
- 6:37Speaker 1: this will be their first test. That's really a test.
- 6:41Speaker 1: And so like, when is their first test? I mean,
- 6:43Speaker 1: it might just be Notre Dame. We'll see if anybody
- 6:46Speaker 1: else can get up on them, but fam, you wake,
- 6:49Speaker 1: Central Michigan, Clemson, Florida State, like you're getting pretty deep
- 6:52Speaker 1: into the season without having any real tests. Maybe LSU
- 6:56Speaker 1: is just the greatest team of all time and Clemson
- 6:58Speaker 1: will be good. I don't know. But yeah, I want
- 7:01Speaker 1: to see it for Miami's running game, but I don't
- 7:04Speaker 1: know how many answers we're going to get until they
- 7:06Speaker 1: go to South Bend.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Dude, is it honestly a bad take to say, let's
- 7:10Speaker 2: just triple team Malachi Toney and figure out how to
- 7:13Speaker 2: go win without him? Like, just take him out of
- 7:14Speaker 2: the game. Like, defense coordinators, I think, would have a
- 7:16Speaker 2: better shot of just saying, here, beat us with your
- 7:19Speaker 2: rushing attack, Cooper Barcate, your depth at wide receiver, and
- 7:22Speaker 2: your tight end play, and we're just going to take
- 7:24Speaker 2: Tony out and have everybody cover him because we know
- 7:27Speaker 2: that he's just unstoppable. Because that's what it felt like. Guys,
- 7:32Speaker 2: there was a moment that he was literally in midair
- 7:35Speaker 2: turning upfield to be able to juke out a pair
- 7:38Speaker 2: of defenders. And you're just like, that shouldn't be possible.
- 7:42Speaker 2: you were doing it just it's it's not it's not
- 7:44Speaker 2: humanized it isn't and like you're just blabbergasted that this
- 7:49Speaker 2: is an athlete that still has another year of college
- 7:51Speaker 2: football left here's my hot take and I have this
- 7:54Speaker 2: hot take in the offseason and I had a bunch
- 7:56Speaker 2: of Miami people in the comments because I read all
- 7:57Speaker 2: your comments and I see how you love to belittle
- 7:59Speaker 2: people like us all the time um I said that
- 8:02Speaker 2: Darian Mensah would be a better quarterback than Cam Ward
- 8:04Speaker 2: I don't think I'm wrong Darian Mensah did everything that
- 8:08Speaker 2: you want to see now the thing is I will
- 8:10Speaker 2: throw out here I do not think that Darian Mensah
- 8:13Speaker 2: has an elite arm. That ball hangs in the air
- 8:16Speaker 2: far too long. But the thing that stood out about
- 8:19Speaker 2: Darian Mensah that I think Cam Ward took a little
- 8:23Speaker 2: while to get acclimated to in the Shannon Dawson offense. Timing, accuracy, delivery, decision-making, confidence.
- 8:31Speaker 1: All of it's there.
- 8:33Speaker 2: How many times did you watch as Miami's offensive line
- 8:35Speaker 2: was getting pushed back and he didn't feel the pressure?
- 8:39Speaker 2: He was unfazed.
- 8:40Speaker 1: All he did.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Let's just float it into the air, find a receiver downfield.
- 8:45Speaker 2: How many times did you watch that he had to
- 8:46Speaker 2: step up in the pocket, deliver a clean strike? Guys,
- 8:49Speaker 2: he had more touchdowns than incompletions in this game. I
- 8:53Speaker 2: don't care if you play Bumble Skunk University or Division
- 8:56Speaker 2: II Hootin.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Holla Hootin' Annie Tech.
- 8:59Speaker 3: You have more touchdowns.
- 9:01Speaker 2: It's a fantastic actual visual arts program. I just want
- 9:04Speaker 2: to give them credit.
- 9:05Speaker 1: If you tell me that.
- 9:09Speaker 2: You have more touchdowns than incompletions. That is elite level stuff.
- 9:14Speaker 2: And Darian Mensah was a top five quarterback going into
- 9:17Speaker 2: last season. Darian Mensah is a top five quarterback.
- 9:19Speaker 3: Going into this season.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that the main question that you have
- 9:22Speaker 2: today is, would you leave Mensah out of the Heisman
- 9:26Speaker 2: Trophy race? Because you have to have a guy that
- 9:31Speaker 2: breaks every single receiving record in. Because the only way
- 9:34Speaker 2: I do not see Darian Mensah going to the Big
- 9:37Speaker 2: Apple is is because if you only are taking one
- 9:39Speaker 2: Miami player and the guy has every record broken, he's
- 9:42Speaker 2: going to win the award.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Let's talk.
