- 0:03Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to res Senner's Story. Hour as a
- 0:06Reminder is a reading service intended for people who are
- 0:10blind from other disabilities that make it difficult to read
- 0:13printed material. Today, we will continue with the book last
- 0:18time on the character Barcas. Your reader today is Diane.
- 0:24The story that we will continue with is Barkas the
- 0:28Most Fun and it was published by Chronicle Books. It
- 0:34has a copyright year of twenty twenty one and the
- 0:37author's Patricia nick Laughlin. And then, when it is dark,
- 0:44we'll do what your grandfather just always did on stormy nights,
- 0:48says my mother. What I ask He told stories, says mother,
- 0:53stories about when he was young. I'm young now, I say,
- 0:57I don't have any stories. We'll make up a story
- 1:00after dinner, says my mother. What will we call it?
- 1:03A winter's tale? Says my father. The story will be
- 1:07about us, I say, And Barcus and baby, of course,
- 1:11says my mother. We have dinner. Baby eats her own food.
- 1:15Barcus eats his food and three homemade biscuits, hiding another
- 1:19one in a sleeping bag for later. Outside, the wind
- 1:23blows small branches against the roof. My mother brings out
- 1:27some quilts. My father makes hot cocoa. It is time
- 1:31for the story. A winter's tale begins. My father Barcus
- 1:35thumps his tale against the floor. Not that tale, says
- 1:40my father. Once on a stormy night, a family cuddled
- 1:44in front of a roaring fire, says my father. Woof,
- 1:49Barcus knows he is family. I say, and baby too.
- 1:53Baby came to them on fairy weans, says my mother.
- 1:58That's not true. I say, it's a story, Nikki. Anything
- 2:01can be true in the story, says my mother. The
- 2:05dog Barcus was a master fire builder, says my father.
- 2:09He kept the family warm. Woof the cat Baby had
- 2:13brought her pen and paper. She was writing a poem
- 2:16about winter. I say, what was the poem, asked my mother.
- 2:20I think, for a moment, winter cone, a sparkling white,
- 2:23blowing wind all through the night. Baby wrote that, asked
- 2:28my father. She is a published poet. I say, and
- 2:32it's a story. Anything can be true. Family slept all
- 2:36through the night, except Barcus, who tended the fire. I yawn.
- 2:41My mother blows out the oil lamp and pulls her
- 2:44sleeping bag around her. Barkus yawns, his squeaky dog yawn?
- 2:49How does the story in I asked, yawning to the
- 2:53family lived happily after after, says my father, as expected, woof,
- 2:59Barcus's wolf is soft and sleepy. My eyes closed, as expected,
- 3:05I say our next. Such stories are about different careers
- 3:10that one can be when they grow up, and the
- 3:13first one is called I Want to Be a Teacher,
- 3:17and it was published by Harper an imprint of Harper
- 3:19Collins Publishers has a copyright Your twenty twenty one and
- 3:24the author is Laura Driscool. My sister Stella is learning
- 3:29to talk. I'm teaching her some words. Can you say Mama,
- 3:34I ask her. Mama, says Stella. Can you say Dad, Dad?
- 3:40I ask Stella Dad Dad. Stella says Dad smiles. You
- 3:46are a good teacher. Dad says to me. I have
- 3:49taught Sella to Stella to say bye bye. I have
- 3:53taught Stella to say no. She can even say our
- 3:57sister's name, Lucy. Oh see Sys Stella. I point to myself.
- 4:04Can you say Noah? I asked, Stella stuffed cereal into
- 4:08her mouth. I try again, no Ah, Noah, I say,
- 4:15Stella's done talking. I want Stella to learn my name.
- 4:19We will try again later. I tell her it is
- 4:22time for me to go see my own teachers. I
- 4:25know a lot of teachers. Miss Finch is my school teacher.
- 4:29In our classroom, Miss Finch teaches us to read new words.
- 4:33Miss Finch teaches us about important important people. Miss Finch
- 4:38teaches us how to be a good friend. Some days
- 4:41I go down the hall to Miss Boy's room. She
- 4:44is my speech teacher. I repeat after Miss Boyd the
- 4:49rabbit is out in the rain. I say, my r
- 4:53sounds are getting better. On other days, our class goes
- 4:56to the art room. Mister Case is teaching us to
- 5:00about the color whill did you know that red and yellow?
- 5:04Meg's orange? Our gym teacher, Miss Finn shows us how
- 5:07to play blob tag at recess. It is so tiring
- 5:12and so fun. You have to use teamwork for this game,
- 5:16Miss Finn tells us. At home, I get a snack.
- 5:20My sister is at the table with her math tutor.
- 5:22Gin Jin knows lots of cool tricks for adding big numbers.
- 5:27In the living room, Mom is having her tuba lesson.
- 5:30Her tuba teacher comes once a week. How do I sound,
- 5:34mom asks? I give Mom a thumbs up. She is
- 5:38not perfect, but she is way better than when she started.
- 5:42After dinner, Dad takes me to my swim lesson. My
- 5:45swim teacher Tim teaches me ARMStrokes and bubble blowing. At
- 5:50the end of the lesson, I swim across the whole pool.
- 5:54I knew you could do it, Tim says. The next
- 5:57day is Saturday. Mom takes Stella, Lucy, Rocket and me
- 6:01to meet another teacher. Dan is a dog trainer, a
- 6:05teacher for Rocket. I say, Dan nods and ads, I
- 6:10will also teach you how to teach Rocket. One thing
- 6:14Dan teaches us is not to let Rocket to eat
- 6:17off the table here that Stella, I say, you have
- 6:21to say no Rocket, No, says Stella. She shakes her
- 6:25head and Stella Granson points at me. No. Stella says,
- 6:31ah no, Noah, Stella can say my name. You did it, Stella,
- 6:38I say, I'm so proud of her. It feels good
- 6:41to be a teacher. Our next story is titled I
- 6:45Want to Be a Police Officer, and it was published
- 6:48by Harper. An imprint of Harper Collins Publishers has a
- 6:51copyright of twenty eighteen and the author of our book
- 6:55is Laura Driscool. I am learning all about bike safety.
- 7:00If Sir Green checks my helmet, looks good, Eva, she says,
- 7:04snug around your head. That stratt fits well. You are
- 7:07ready to ride. Officer Green is in the bike tent
- 7:11at Town Safety Day. She already put more air in
- 7:14my tires. She put a bell on my handlebars. She
- 7:18tested my brakes. I know Officer Green from school. Officer
- 7:22Green is at school when we have fire drills. I've
- 7:25seen Officer Green all around town. She makes me feel safe.
- 7:30When I grow up, I want to be just like her.
- 7:33I see lots of police officers at Town Safety Day.
- 7:36One of them has a dog. I'm Officer Bell, he says,
- 7:40this is Gus. Officer Bell and Gus are in the
- 7:44Cane nine Unit. Gus is a search and rescue dog.
- 7:48Gus uses his sense of smell to fine missing people,
- 7:51says Officer Bell. I love animals. Offerer Bell is so
- 7:56lucky he gets to be a police officer with a
- 7:58dog partner. Another police officer is making ID cards for kids.
- 8:03She takes my photo and my fingerprints. She tells me
- 8:07it will be handy for your parents to have this
- 8:10ID card in an emergency. The officer's name is Detective Win,
- 8:16a detective. I say, do you solve mysteries? Sort of?
- 8:20Detective Wind says, when a crime takes place, I try
- 8:24to find out what happened. I make a lot of
- 8:26phone calls. I talk to a lot of people. I
- 8:29ask a lot of questions. I'm good asking questions. Maybe
- 8:34I should be a detective. Trooper Jones is talking to
- 8:38kids about car safety. He lets us sit in his
- 8:41police car. Trooper Jones is a state trooper. His job
- 8:45is to keep rods and highways safe. I always wear
- 8:48my seatbelt. He says. It's a law that keeps us
- 8:52all safer. I make sure drivers follow all the rules
- 8:57of the road. I am pretty good remembering rules. I
- 9:01would probably be a good state trooper. Officer Perez hands
- 9:05out flowers about wilderness safety. He is the game warden.
- 9:11Is that like a police officer for the woods? I ask, yes,
- 9:15says Officer Perez. I love working in the great outdoors.
- 9:19On the way home, I see police officers in the
- 9:22parking lot. They keep the traffic moving slowly but safely.
- 9:26One officer stops the cars so I can walk my
- 9:29bike across the road. It is Officer Green. Did you
- 9:33have fun at Town Safety Day? Officer Green asked me yes.
- 9:38I say, I did not know there were so many
- 9:40ways to be a police officer. Police officers work hard
- 9:44to make every day a safe day. Our next book
- 9:48is titled I Went to Be a Scientist, and it
- 9:51was published by Harper in imprint of Harper Collins Publishers
- 9:55as a copyright eear of twenty twenty four. The author
- 9:58is Laura DRIs. We set sol today on a ship
- 10:03headed for the North po My mom is in charge
- 10:06of a team of scientists. They record well songs, they
- 10:10take photos of their flukes. These scientists are marine biologists.
- 10:15Marine biologists study animals that live in the water. Like
- 10:19all scientists, they watch, listen, and collect facts. They test
- 10:23ideas to see if they are right. Some scientists try
- 10:27to find the cause of a problem. Some of them
- 10:30try to solve problems. All scientists want to learn more
- 10:33about our world. There are lots of scientists on our ship.
- 10:37Each one has something to study while we are at sea,
- 10:41and I get to help. Eve studies water. She is
- 10:45a hydrologist. I am testing how clean the ocean water is.
- 10:50Eve says, I help her get today's water samples back
- 10:54on the ship. I bring the water to bend. He
- 10:57puts it under a microscope. I am counting tiny life
- 11:00forms in the water. Then says he is a microbiologist.
- 11:05I help Rosa with her underwater scanner is on the
- 11:09underside of the boat. We control it from a computer.
- 11:13I am making a map of the seafloor. Roses says.
- 11:17Rosa is a geologist. She studies the earth and how
- 11:20it changes up on deck, Jim wants to know what
- 11:25the sea floor is made of. Jim studies earthquakes, why
- 11:28and where they happen. Jim is a seismiologist. Many strong
- 11:33earthquakes take place underwater. Jim says. Em is at the
- 11:37weather station on the bridge. I help record the air
- 11:40and water temperature. Emma is studying ice near the North Pole.
- 11:44Some ice is melting. Emma wants to know how fast.
- 11:48She is a climate scientist. We go with Tye and
- 11:52Lena into the ice. Ty studies the weather. He is
- 11:56a meteorologist. Lena studies polar bears. She is a zoologist.
- 12:02Nat has come along to look into space. The sky
- 12:05at sea is so clear. He lets us look through
- 12:08his telescope he is filming a meteor shower. Nat is
- 12:13an astronomer. There's so much to find out about the world.
- 12:18A botanist might ask, what plans do these like this?
- 12:22An epidemiologist might ask what causes a disease? A physicist
- 12:27might ask what is the universe made of? Now? That
- 12:31is a big question. Maybe someday I will try to
- 12:34answer it. Our next book is called I Want to
- 12:37Be An Artist, was published by Harper an imprint of
- 12:40Harper Collins Publishers, has a copyright ear of twenty twenty
- 12:44four and the author is Laura Driscoll. Papa, I shall
- 12:50come see my art. My grandpa has come to my
- 12:53school's art show. I love it. Papa says, it looks
- 12:57like me. The next week, Papa takes me downtown. We
- 13:01are going to another art show. It will be fun
- 13:04for you to meet other artists, Papa says. The paintings
- 13:08are huge and colorful. Papa knows men. Who is a painter.
- 13:13She shows me the brushes she uses. I also meet Ned.
- 13:17He is a sculptor. I create shapes for metal. Ned says,
- 13:22meaning Ned a real artist. I say, my art does
- 13:25not look like theirs. You are a real artist too,
- 13:29says Papa. There are all kinds of artists. Come on,
- 13:32I'll show you. We take the train to Papa's workspace.
- 13:36Papa is a hand lettering artist. People hire Papa to
- 13:40make signs and invitations. Other artists work in the same building.
- 13:45Papa's friend, Ellie, is a potter. I make bows and
- 13:49faces from clay. Ellie says. Ben is an illustrator. He's
- 13:53creating art for a book. Ray is a graphic designer
- 13:57for a magazine. I lay out the text and art
- 13:59Rey page Race says. Liz is an animator. I make
- 14:04many drawings called frames, She says. Liz clicks through the
- 14:08frames quickly. The dog seems to move. Terr is a photographer.
- 14:13She's doing a photoshoot on the roof today. My photos
- 14:17going ass in catalogs. Terra says. On the way home,
- 14:23we walk through the park. We see a cartoon artist.
- 14:27We get him to draw us. A woman is selling
- 14:29her plant drawings. I am a botanical botanical artist, she explains.
- 14:37Close to home, we walk by a group painting a building.
- 14:40Want to help. A woman ask us we are working
- 14:43on my mural. My name is Rosa. I am a muralist.
- 14:47Rose explains, each person paints a small part. At the
- 14:51end it will look like this. Rosa shows me your plant.
- 14:55It reminds me of my art work. We are making
- 14:59art here on the side of a building. Pop is right,
- 15:02art and artists are everywhere. Our next book is called
- 15:07I Want to Be An Engineer, and it was published
- 15:10by Harper and Imprint of Harper Collins Publishers has a
- 15:13copyright You're Of twenty twenty one. The author is Laura Driskol.
- 15:18My big brother Joe. He's going to a new school.
- 15:21Not just any school, Joe says, an engineering school. I
- 15:26am not sure what that is, but it looks like
- 15:29engineering needs lots of Joe's favorite things, space and rockets.
- 15:33When Joe grows up, he wants to build rockets. It
- 15:37is called aerospace engineering, Joe says. The principle gives us
- 15:41a tour. She asked me, maybe someday you will come
- 15:44here too. I shake my head. I do not like space,
- 15:48I say, I like robots. I show her my robot dog.
- 15:53Engineering is not all about space, the principal says. Engineers
- 15:58are problem solvers. We use science to plan and build things.
- 16:02There are all kinds of engineers. I am an engineer,
- 16:05Mom says on the way home. Huh, I thought Mom
- 16:09was an architect. I am an architectural engineer. Mom says,
- 16:14I made plans for buildings. They have to look nice,
- 16:17they have to be buildable, and they can't cost too
- 16:20much to build. It is a puzzle. The next day,
- 16:25Mom takes me to work with her. There are many workers.
- 16:29They are building a building that Mom designed. There are
- 16:32lots of engineers here. Mom says, we need an engineer.
- 16:36When we check in at the office, I make sure
- 16:38the building is built strong and safe. He says, from
- 16:41the concrete at the bottom to the roof on top.
- 16:44He is a structural engineer. Down in the basement, workers
- 16:48put in pipes. Some pipes bring water in, this engineer says,
- 16:53others carry wastewater out. They run all through the building.
- 16:57She is a plumbing engineer. Upstairs, workers put in wires
- 17:01and cables. Some will carry electricity to lights, fire alarms,
- 17:05and more. The electrical engineer decides where they all go.
- 17:09Some cables are for phone lines and computers. How many
- 17:14does this floor need? The network engineer will decide. Outside
- 17:19an engineer takes notes which way should the solar panels face?
- 17:24How can the building be more earth friendly? He is
- 17:27an environmental engineer. Another engineer just got here. He's going
- 17:33to work on the elevator. This engineer is an expert
- 17:36on how machines work. He is a mechanical engineer. Want
- 17:41to meet my helper as the mechanical engineer. My helper
- 17:45climbs up the elevator. Shift, It drills hosts in the concrete,
- 17:49and it does it all by itself. It is a robot.
- 17:52I shout, my mom, says, guests, who designed that robot?
- 17:57An engineer, I asked? Mom nods a robotic engineer, She says,
- 18:02just think I could make robots. I want to be
- 18:06an engineer. Our next set of books are about Tie
- 18:12Tie's travels. Super Tie is our first book about Tie,
- 18:20and it was published by Harper and the imprint of
- 18:24Harper Collins Publishers. It has a copyright eer of twenty
- 18:29twenty five and Kelly Starline Lyons is the author. Ty
- 18:37loves superheroes. He watches them on TV. He read books
- 18:41about them. Tie place with super toys. He loves how
- 18:46they help. I wish I was a superhero hero. Ty
- 18:51digs in his claw said, He smiles. Ty puts on
- 18:54his cape. He puts on his mask. Ty is ready
- 18:57to save the day. At the store, Tye sees a
- 19:01man with lots of bags. The man needs help. Ty

- 19:21the day. At home, Ty sees mama looking for her keys.
- 19:25Mama needs help. Ty uses his super sight. He finds
- 19:29them in a flash. He saves the day. Super Tie
- 19:34takes a break. He flies planes with his brother Corey.
- 19:38Ty makes his plane sore. It sails across the yard,
- 19:42higher and higher. Then uh oh, the plane is stuck.
- 19:46Ty must save the day. Ty uses his super breath. Nothing.
- 19:52Ty tries his rocket shoes. The plane is still too
- 19:55far away the Supersit is no help. Ty sinks to
- 19:59the ground. He pulls off his mask. I'm not super
- 20:03at all, what's wrong, Tie, Corey asks. Tye points to
- 20:07the plane. I can't get it down. Ty says, thy
- 20:12wife's his eyes. I need a super friend. Corey looks
- 20:16at the plane. He looks at Ty. Stay right here,
- 20:19he says. Corey runs inside. A new superhero shows up.
- 20:25His maskleans his cake flaps like wings. He winks at Ty.
- 20:31Ty smiles, super Corey, can you help? Corey uses his
- 20:35super arms. He shakes the giant tree. The plane lands safely.
- 20:40Tied cheers. Here comes super Tie and super Corey. Being
- 20:45a superhero is fun, but having a super brother is
- 20:50even better. Our next book is called Ty's Travels show Time,

- 21:20sail on the sea. I see a boat in nick spatter.
- 21:25Time to bake. My teacake smells so good? What else
- 21:29can I do? I look around? Then I see them
- 21:33red drums. That drums set is all alone. It's quiet
- 21:38in waiting. It wants to be played. What do I do?
- 21:42I step on stage? It's showtime. The spotlight shines. I
- 21:47hit the drums, wrap a tap tap, I play fast
- 21:51and slow. I play hard and soft. I bob my
- 21:55head to the beat. People groove as I play. Next,
- 21:59I see it guitar. I strum the strings, throum, a
- 22:03thrum thrum. I rock to the music. The crowd grooves too.
- 22:08Look at that piano. I press the keys, plink the plink, plink,
- 22:12My fingers fly. The piano sings like a bird. I
- 22:17wish I could play everything at once. I frown and
- 22:20look around. I see my friend Ari. I see my
- 22:23friend Jazz. I smile and walk over. Want to make
- 22:27a band. I race to the drums. Ari grabs the guitar.
