- 0:07Speaker 1: This is Kevin Sports very Daily. You're bringing you the
- 0:10Speaker 1: Folkstone and Hive Sports show right here on one of
- 0:12Speaker 1: five point nine Radio Folkstone. On today's show, we have
- 0:21Speaker 1: local football including FA Cup news news from Folkston Rugby
- 0:26Speaker 1: Club as their season gets underway. Folks Optimist hockey season
- 0:30Speaker 1: begins on Saturday. And I've got loads of running news
- 0:38Speaker 1: including the Dover Waterfront Park runs, second Birthday, My Day
- 0:47Speaker 1: in Riot on the mic at the Ancient Trails, thirty
- 0:50Speaker 1: and fifteen k run, the list of venues where our
- 0:56Speaker 1: local park runners have been around the globe, news of
- 1:02Speaker 1: a check presentation with money raised from the Virtual folks
- 1:05Speaker 1: Don ten mile Race, and a lovely story of two
- 1:11Speaker 1: great friends who trained together for their very first marathon
- 1:15Speaker 1: and are going to chuck in any other sporty snippies
- 1:18Speaker 1: I can find. So let's get this show on the
- 1:26Speaker 1: road with a belter now recently picked up that the
- 1:33Speaker 1: Rolling Stones are to call it a day. They have
- 1:40Speaker 1: planned in twenty twenty six a massive farewell tour called
- 1:44Speaker 1: One Last Riot. They'll be playing gigs in London, North
- 1:48Speaker 1: and South America, Asia and Australia. So what better way
- 1:53Speaker 1: to start the show with one of my favorites Black
- 2:02Speaker 1: turned this one up loud. They wanted to be into
- 2:17Speaker 1: the Rolling Stones. They're on the road for the last
- 2:30Speaker 1: time next year. And you know what the Rolling Stones
- 2:38Speaker 1: they started, they joined, They formed together in nineteen sixty two,
- 2:43Speaker 1: So next year it would be an incredible sixty two
- 2:46Speaker 1: years on the road. That's amazing, isn't it. That's that's
- 2:50Speaker 1: longer than a lot of our listeners I should think
- 2:52Speaker 1: have been alive. Right, So okay, time for some football
- 2:57Speaker 1: news now? Where were the cricket season over and the
- 3:00Speaker 1: football season well underway? Of loads of local football news today.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Last Friday, yes, a Friday evening focused in victor be
- 3:07Speaker 1: Maystone United to nil in the second the qualifying round
- 3:10Speaker 1: of the FA Cup in front of over twelve hundred
- 3:13Speaker 1: spectators at Chatham Towns Ground and by the sounds of
- 3:17Speaker 1: it it was no fluke result. In the third round
- 3:20Speaker 1: they'd been drawn away against it was either Westfield or
- 3:23Speaker 1: Horsham who went to a replay Tuesday evening, Worsham coming
- 3:27Speaker 1: out of the winners. So this time will be played
- 3:29Speaker 1: on Saturday, September the twenty seventh. Meanwhile, the back to
- 3:34Speaker 1: league action on Monday against Avery, which was away where
- 3:39Speaker 1: all the games are away at the moment, Hoday, where
- 3:41Speaker 1: the result was a five to two win, placing them
- 3:43Speaker 1: second in the table this coming Saturday. It's a way
- 3:46Speaker 1: to a purchase here in the league. And judging by
- 3:49Speaker 1: the fixture list, the first home game on the new
- 3:52Speaker 1: artificial pitch is scheduled for Tuesday the fourteenth, This also
- 3:56Speaker 1: against Avery as it happens, but of course this could change.
- 4:00Speaker 1: I'd probably get an update from Adriaan when he comes
- 4:02Speaker 1: in on Saturday and see just exactly if they are
- 4:06Speaker 1: on schedule. Meanwhile, elsewhere, high Town picked up three valuable
- 4:11Speaker 1: points against the Chiselhurst glebe Of beating them two to one,
- 4:15Speaker 1: both goals coming from Key and Scott, and I thought,
- 4:18Speaker 1: do you know what, I'm sure I know that name,
- 4:21Speaker 1: and yeah, right enough. Kean came into the studio with
- 4:24Speaker 1: his mum and dad and his teammate Leo when he
- 4:27Speaker 1: was playing for the Invictor Under Nines, which was nine
- 4:30Speaker 1: years ago, so it's good to see he stayed in
- 4:33Speaker 1: the game and he's doing well. Highest match this week
- 4:36Speaker 1: is in the second qualifying round of the FA Voles
- 4:39Speaker 1: against a team called Athletic Newman Newham Athletic Newham who
- 4:44Speaker 1: played their football in the Essex Senior League at the
- 4:47Speaker 1: Bobby Moore Sports Hub in Dagenham. Now that's just five
- 4:51Speaker 1: miles up the road from where Bobby was born in Barking.
- 4:54Speaker 1: So this game is scheduled for three pm kickoff at Reechfield's.
- 5:00Speaker 1: In the NLG Kent County Football League, Hawkins, who are
- 5:03Speaker 1: now third, lost four to one to home to Fulkenwood
- 5:06Speaker 1: who are currently top, and New Romney lost two on
- 5:09Speaker 1: away to Bexley. This week both teams turn their attentions
- 5:12Speaker 1: to the Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield where Hawkins are drawn
- 5:16Speaker 1: to AC Ashford, who play one division below them, and
- 5:20Speaker 1: they actually play at the Judy Row Stadium ian Ashford.
- 5:23Speaker 1: New Romney are at home to Sporting Club Thamesmead Reserves
- 5:27Speaker 1: who are thirteenth in the Premier whilst New Romney are fourteenth.
- 5:30Speaker 1: So that looks like a pretty close game. And last
- 5:34Speaker 1: Sunday the in Victor Ladies conceded a late goal against
- 5:37Speaker 1: Park regis As at Sittingbourne. Final score was one to all.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Their next matches at the stadium in Cheriton on Sunday
- 5:43Speaker 1: against Ramsgate. But just let me remind you Victor Ladies
- 5:47Speaker 1: have been promoted into a higher league. This will be
- 5:50Speaker 1: their third game of the new season, so they're currently
- 5:53Speaker 1: holding their own with one win and one draw. We'll
- 5:57Speaker 1: returning to the FA Cup. Several Kent clubs played last Saturday,
- 6:01Speaker 1: so here are the scores and as the draw was
- 6:03Speaker 1: made last Monday, the winner's opponents in the next round.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Ashford United nil Chathamtown three, Chersey two, Cray Valley Paper
- 6:13Speaker 1: Mills three, Deal two egg and one. Ebbsfleet United beat
- 6:18Speaker 1: Ashford Town. Now Ashford Town come from Middlesex. They beat
- 6:22Speaker 1: them by five goals to nil. Farbara beat Dover for one.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Faversham beat Maidenhead one nil. That's a great result and
- 6:30Speaker 1: there were three drawers. Standing drew two all with Tumbridge Angels,
- 6:34Speaker 1: but Tumbridge Angels won the replay six to one. Whitstable
- 6:38Speaker 1: drew one all with Chichester winning the replay one nil.
- 6:41Speaker 1: What is it about Whitstable and the Cup? Once again
- 6:46Speaker 1: there is another great result and Welling drew one all
- 6:49Speaker 1: with Slough but they lost one. They lost the replay
- 6:52Speaker 1: one nil, so the drawer threw up some interesting ties.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Faversham from the Isthmian Southeast League are drawn away against
- 7:00Speaker 1: the National League South Ebbsfleet two divisions are higher. Gray
- 7:05Speaker 1: Valley paper Mills are at home to Tunbridge Angels. And
- 7:08Speaker 1: now this is one I like. This is a real
- 7:09Speaker 1: choice fixture. Chathamtown are at home to deal Town and
- 7:13Speaker 1: which the ball are at home to Hungerford. And you
- 7:17Speaker 1: know what, I think it's worth giving. We don't hear
- 7:19Speaker 1: much about them actually, but lidd Town worth giving them
- 7:21Speaker 1: a mention as they slip down to the Skeffold League
- 7:25Speaker 1: First Division. But they are playing in the Favars on
- 7:28Speaker 1: the twentieth away to a team called AFC von Denians,
- 7:33Speaker 1: whose home ground is the historical with Dean Stadium. Now
- 7:37Speaker 1: that might ring a few bells with you guys out there. Now.
- 7:39Speaker 1: It's traditionally known as an athletics stadium, famous for being
- 7:43Speaker 1: the home track of a certain mister Steve Ovac, and
- 7:46Speaker 1: it was the home of Brighton ho Vale Win between
- 7:48Speaker 1: nineteen ninety nine and twenty eleven before the building of
- 7:52Speaker 1: their new Falmer Stadium now known as the Ames. But
- 7:57Speaker 1: with Danel like all football stadiums, it's really it's like
- 8:01Speaker 1: all football stays with a track round it. Even the
- 8:04Speaker 1: West Ham's London Stadium, which I've been to watch the
- 8:07Speaker 1: Diamond League. It's great for athletics, but you're miles away
- 8:10Speaker 1: from me all the action at a football match. Still,
- 8:13Speaker 1: I'm going to keep you an eye on this one,
- 8:14Speaker 1: that lid, and good luck to you in the vas.
- 8:18Speaker 1: One more thing. The FA Trophy second qualifying round is
- 8:21Speaker 1: on Saturday and the only local game of note is
- 8:25Speaker 1: Deal Town who are at home to Ashford United and
- 8:29Speaker 1: along Saturday they met in the league with the home team.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Ashford were the winners by two goals to one. So
- 8:34Speaker 1: which way will it go this time? Well? Do you
- 8:36Speaker 1: know what? We just have to wait and see. Okay,
- 8:39Speaker 1: So now let's keep the show rocking. It's time for
- 8:41Speaker 1: Abody to take that and with Lulu and relight my fight.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Take that with a little tajo Lulu there out of
- 9:19Speaker 1: a great track in it. Okay. Well it's time for
- 9:24Speaker 1: some rugby. Well the local rugby season has started and
- 9:29Speaker 1: both folks and teams began with a win. The first
- 9:31Speaker 1: fifteen played away against Medway. Second fifteen in the London
- 9:35Speaker 1: and Southeast Division Counties two in the Kent section. They're
- 9:38Speaker 1: a bit of a mouthful, but I'll do that once
- 9:40Speaker 1: and I won't tell you for the rest of the season,
- 9:43Speaker 1: just remember it anyway. They beat them sixty three points
- 9:46Speaker 1: to twenty four, whilst the Seconds were at home to
- 9:48Speaker 1: deal Betsanger Seconds and they beat them forty two points
- 9:52Speaker 1: to fourteen. Now the Seconds this season are playing in
- 9:55Speaker 1: the Kent Rural League. But what a start overall if
- 9:59Speaker 1: you look at it this one it was one hundred
- 10:01Speaker 1: and five points four and thirty eight against. Next Saturday,
- 10:06Speaker 1: the first team are at home two Thunny Wonderers in
- 10:08Speaker 1: the Papa John's Cup and the Seconds are away to
- 10:11Speaker 1: Sittingborn Well, it's hockey time again. This season sees the
- 10:16Speaker 1: start of the hockey season with eight men's fixtures and
- 10:19Speaker 1: five ladies. The men's first eleven travel away to Woking
- 10:23Speaker 1: and the Ladies first are at home to Mauldern Russets.
- 10:26Speaker 1: So if you've missed your hockey fix, there are six
- 10:29Speaker 1: home games scheduled at the Three Hills. The first one
- 10:32Speaker 1: is the Ladies' fourth team who are playing against the
- 10:34Speaker 1: Tunbridge Wells at eleven o'clock and it's back to back hockey.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Then the last game is the Ladies first team at
- 10:41Speaker 1: three point thirty. So one I pop down to the
- 10:44Speaker 1: Three Hills and support the ever growing teams of the
- 10:47Speaker 1: Folkston Optimist Hockey Club. I do have all the fixtures
- 10:50Speaker 1: in front of me, but well, i'll tell you all
- 10:52Speaker 1: day to read them out. So I'm going to rely
- 10:54Speaker 1: on Amy, a future guest of the show. She's promised
- 10:57Speaker 1: to come on the show, Amy Bumpstead. She is the
- 11:00Speaker 1: media guru. I don't know what the club would do
- 11:02Speaker 1: without Amy, or I really don't, but she will be
- 11:05Speaker 1: posting all the fixtures to me and to the rest
- 11:08Speaker 1: of the media in the town, and I'll be reading
- 11:12Speaker 1: them out next Thursday. So now, now, we've said on
- 11:16Speaker 1: the show several times about songs and what they mean
- 11:19Speaker 1: to you and what they remind you of where you've been.
- 11:24Speaker 1: It could remind you of growing up, your first girlfriend, holidays,
- 11:28Speaker 1: you know. But even some songs do remind you of
- 11:32Speaker 1: sad times. And the next one is coming up. It's
- 11:35Speaker 1: for me will stick in my mind for a long
- 11:37Speaker 1: long time because only a couple of days ago it
- 11:40Speaker 1: was a sad day when I said goodbye to a
- 11:43Speaker 1: colleague of mine from your tunnel, Mark Higgins. Now, the
- 11:49Speaker 1: crematorium up at Hawkins was absolutely rammed. It really was.
- 11:53Speaker 1: It was a very popular chap and it shows by
- 11:56Speaker 1: the amount of people that turned up to say goodbye
- 11:58Speaker 1: to him. I got a lot to thank for Mark.
- 12:01Speaker 1: When I moved from one job to another from freight's
- 12:05Speaker 1: train crew back in the day, Mark really helped me,
- 12:11Speaker 1: looked after me and his colleague Andy Andy Lewis, who
- 12:15Speaker 1: read a lovely eulogy out to Andy. He helped me
- 12:20Speaker 1: ever so much as well. So it was good to
- 12:22Speaker 1: catch up with Andy and a lot of other colleagues.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Always happens in it on a funeral or perhaps a wedding.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Sometimes you catch up with people sorry that you haven't
- 12:30Speaker 1: seen for a long time. Anyway, this was one of
- 12:33Speaker 1: the songs at the service, and I just felt it
- 12:35Speaker 1: was my little tribute to Mark. So rest in peace, Mark,
- 12:54Speaker 1: another turning by the box, stuck in the world done.
- 13:03Speaker 1: That's right. I hope you had the dime of your life,
- 13:10Speaker 1: green day, time of your life. And that was a
- 13:18Speaker 1: little tribute to Mark Higgins. And I've just remembered that
- 13:21Speaker 1: I must tell you about this little word touch that
- 13:24Speaker 1: the family did. There was a memorial card. Now, now
- 13:28Speaker 1: have you ever worked with Mark anyway? Is always put
- 13:30Speaker 1: the kettle on, let's have a cup of tea everywhere
- 13:33Speaker 1: you went. And what they did they clipped a little
- 13:37Speaker 1: little envelope if you like, with a little picture of
- 13:41Speaker 1: Mark and a tea bag inside it. What a great touch.
- 13:44Speaker 1: It really made me chuckle. That did. Okay, So let's
- 13:47Speaker 1: ramp the sharp a little bit, and we don't want
- 13:48Speaker 1: to be too sad. Things of life goes on, is
- 13:51Speaker 1: say to say, But now where were you? Do you
- 13:53Speaker 1: remember this video? Yeah, turn back time? Well, if share
- 14:26Speaker 1: could turn back time, it would be great, wasn't it.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Now you remember this video? Of course you do remember
- 14:33Speaker 1: that one with all the sailors on the battleship and
- 14:36Speaker 1: Chaer was dancing around and the group was playing in
- 14:39Speaker 1: the background, and I do believe her son was actually
- 14:41Speaker 1: on guitar. And can you remember what she was wearing? Well,
- 14:46Speaker 1: it wasn't much, I'll tell you that. Right. This is
- 14:48Speaker 1: a sports show, so we better crack on. Well now then,
- 14:51Speaker 1: I've had a very busy time at running events recently.
- 14:55Speaker 1: On Saturday, I headed over to Dover in the thunder
- 14:58Speaker 1: and the rain, wondering whether the Dover Waterfront Park runs
- 15:02Speaker 1: at Second Birthday will go ahead because it was really
- 15:05Speaker 1: bad day, you know. I was there at seven forty
- 15:08Speaker 1: five and found the solitary figure of run director Amy
- 15:11Speaker 1: Stimpson sheltering from the rain, glued to the weather forecast
- 15:14Speaker 1: on her phone. Was it on or was it off? Anyway,
- 15:19Speaker 1: just after fellow run director Max Ramsley turned up, the
- 15:22Speaker 1: weather changed and it was all systems go, so big
- 15:25Speaker 1: thanks for tuning up Max and stopping the rain. One
- 15:28Speaker 1: hundred and seven brave runners were on the start line
- 15:30Speaker 1: as I cheered them around with some classic tunes. Big
- 15:33Speaker 1: thanks to Amy, whose nails are quite a bit shorter
- 15:36Speaker 1: these days. And a big thank you to the Port
- 15:38Speaker 1: of Dover for the continuous use of their land for
- 15:41Speaker 1: the park run course. And well done to visually impaired
- 15:44Speaker 1: Hazel Groves. I love speaking to Hazel. Yeah where it was?
- 15:48Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I love speaking to Hazel. She's such a
- 15:51Speaker 1: chirpy lady for someone that's visually impaired, you know, she's
- 15:55Speaker 1: a great inspiration. And it was a one hundred and
- 15:58Speaker 1: fiftieth milestone and run. Oh and by the way, how
- 16:02Speaker 1: lucky were we On the way home? The heavens opened
- 16:05Speaker 1: well Sunday it was an early star for the Rye
- 16:07Speaker 1: thirty K fifteen K ancient trail run. The start was
- 16:11Speaker 1: in the narrow Rye High Street, where we were joined
- 16:15Speaker 1: by the jovial town crier, who started the race with
- 16:17Speaker 1: the historic readout of Rye and the trails, and then
- 16:21Speaker 1: he roared when I ring my bell, run like hell.
- 16:26Speaker 1: The total of five hundred and fifty two finishes crossed
- 16:29Speaker 1: the line and once again the rain stayed away. The
- 16:31Speaker 1: only hazard on the course was a hornet's nest which
- 16:34Speaker 1: didn't like being disturbed in the middle of the countryside
- 16:37Speaker 1: as the runners went by, and took their revenge by
- 16:40Speaker 1: stinging several competitors. However, the fabulous First Day team were
- 16:43Speaker 1: on the scene, quickly administering antihistamine and Cole Compress's football.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Don't you just love a trail run anyway? Well donees
- 16:52Speaker 1: go to James Barney, Joe Carroll, Phil Haynes, Linnea Stockhol,
- 16:56Speaker 1: Paul Hannay and Phil Moore who completed the fifteen K.
- 17:01Speaker 1: I'm not sure about those shorts, Phil, and well done
- 17:05Speaker 1: to Simon Ramsay, Phil Heathfield and Jenny Heathfield who completed
- 17:09Speaker 1: the thirty K. Jenny picking up a couple of hornets
- 17:12Speaker 1: things on the way, but she's all right. Now, Okay,
- 17:17Speaker 1: time for some music now from two thousand and one.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Let's crack on with a bit of Shakira, Shakira, Shakira.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Who else puts their name in a song today? I'll
- 17:40Speaker 1: not saying Tom Jones Tom Jones anyway, right, So we're
- 17:45Speaker 1: gonna crack straight on. This is Kevin Daly on the
- 17:47Speaker 1: Midweek Sports Show and we've got a bit more running
- 17:49Speaker 1: news coming up in the meantime. What about a bit
- 17:51Speaker 1: of a one republic No I could live. I don't
- 17:53Speaker 1: tell him the truth where there's a shadow when republic
- 18:06Speaker 1: in twenty sixteen, wherever I dove right? Some more part
- 18:12Speaker 1: run news now. Park run venues last Saturday saw Jason
- 18:16Speaker 1: Crockford at Gunnersbury in West London. Greg Dixon was at
- 18:19Speaker 1: Lymington in the New Forest. John Eaton was at Tilgate
- 18:23Speaker 1: in Crawley, West Sussex. Debbie Jeffrey found her park run
- 18:27Speaker 1: at Ottershaw in Surrey. David Botting found his way to
- 18:30Speaker 1: Thomas Mills Park Run in Framing, Framlingham, also in Surrey.
- 18:35Speaker 1: Kevin and Anne Whitby were in Tottenhason Devon for the
- 18:38Speaker 1: Sharpham Estate Park Run. Andy Noble and Leslie clant Seed
- 18:42Speaker 1: did the Battersea Park Run and further afield, Lee Brewer
- 18:45Speaker 1: and Louis Major were in the USA at the same
- 18:48Speaker 1: venue as Simon Coffee attended recently, that was at the
- 18:52Speaker 1: Claremont Waterfront Park Run in Orlando. Brian Davis, after finding
- 18:57Speaker 1: a park running Dusseldorf, recently competed in the Vingis Park Run,
- 19:01Speaker 1: which is in the capital of Lithuania. And listen to
- 19:04Speaker 1: this one. Finally, Nikki Goodwin and Kai Yan run at
- 19:08Speaker 1: the West Coast Park Run, which was actually in Singapore.
- 19:13Speaker 1: So wow, where do these tourists find these part runs?
- 19:16Speaker 1: I love this section of the show and I've got
- 19:18Speaker 1: to thank Folks and Running and Athletics Club. To be fair,
- 19:21Speaker 1: they do put it on their website, but I kind
- 19:24Speaker 1: of dig in a little bit deeper and find out
- 19:26Speaker 1: a little bit more about the park runs and there
- 19:29Speaker 1: have been some fantastic venues around the world. So I'm
- 19:32Speaker 1: sure that if you are a runner, you go away
- 19:34Speaker 1: on holiday anywhere, what's the first thing you do? Look
- 19:37Speaker 1: for a park run? Anyway, Tuesday evening I attended a
- 19:41Speaker 1: check presentation at the Three Hills. Now this is really interesting.
- 19:45Speaker 1: This is very clever at this one. With several medals
- 19:48Speaker 1: left over from the Folks to ten, Sonja May came
- 19:51Speaker 1: up with the idea of organizing a virtual ten miler
- 19:54Speaker 1: for the folks and running and Athletic club members to
- 19:57Speaker 1: run in their own time and raise money for charity. Now,
- 20:00Speaker 1: South Kent Mind won the ballots of chosen charities and
- 20:04Speaker 1: present and South Kent Mind trustee and former Running Club
- 20:08Speaker 1: member Dave Warbrook with Eve. They presented him with a
- 20:12Speaker 1: check for six hundred and ten pounds. So what a
- 20:15Speaker 1: great idea, Sonya. Congratulations go to Sonya. So simple, isn't it.
- 20:19Speaker 1: It just needed a little spark and some think of it,
- 20:22Speaker 1: And so well done to you. Okay, so we've still
- 20:25Speaker 1: got some more running news, but I'm going to break
- 20:27Speaker 1: it up with a soul now. You might have heard
- 20:29Speaker 1: me say that I do love powerful female vocalists and
- 20:33Speaker 1: you can't get any more powerful than Celine Dion. When
- 20:40Speaker 1: I was young, Nevin need got a voice. She's tiny,
- 21:21Speaker 1: isn't she. She hasn't been around for a while, she
- 21:23Speaker 1: hasn't been very well, but even at the peak of
- 21:26Speaker 1: her career, she's tiny. How can such perfect loud vocals
- 21:31Speaker 1: come out from such a tiny little frame. Amazing. Okay,
- 21:35Speaker 1: so my final running story is about two good friends,
- 21:39Speaker 1: Lauren Hart and Amy Howard, who trained together for their
- 21:42Speaker 1: very first marathon. Now. They wisely chose Richmond in London
- 21:46Speaker 1: as their venue as this was one of the flattest
- 21:48Speaker 1: courses around. Now. Chatting with both of these determined ladies recently,
- 21:53Speaker 1: Lauren told me that even after twenty two weeks of training,
- 21:57Speaker 1: she felt a mental and a physical pain at twenty miles,
- 22:00Speaker 1: but always knew she was going to finish. She said
- 22:03Speaker 1: that the six weeks of school holidays was hard, juggling
- 22:06Speaker 1: the training with two young children, Wren and Madison, and
- 22:10Speaker 1: a shift working partner, but they were all waiting for
- 22:12Speaker 1: her at the finish, which was an incentive of course,
- 22:15Speaker 1: and with her eight year old son Wren, he was
- 22:17Speaker 1: holding up a card saying my mommy can do hard things.
- 22:21Speaker 1: Lauren finished safely and said it was a relief to
- 22:24Speaker 1: get over the finish line. Amy's training was going well
- 22:28Speaker 1: until she hit a calf injury. She wisely rested up beforehand,
- 22:32Speaker 1: not wanting to make it worse, but it started playing
- 22:35Speaker 1: up after thirteen miles in the race, so she decided
- 22:38Speaker 1: to take it a little bit easier in the second half. However,
- 22:41Speaker 1: the training paid off and Amy told me there was
- 22:45Speaker 1: more highs than lose, and it was an amazing feeling
- 22:48Speaker 1: when she crossed the finish line. And added bonus knowing
- 22:50Speaker 1: that her boyfriend Adam, who's a fellow runner, so he
- 22:53Speaker 1: understands what she was going through, he was waiting for
- 22:55Speaker 1: at the end. And now this is a lovely story
- 22:58Speaker 1: of two friends who helped each other through the weeks
- 23:01Speaker 1: of training to complete their very first marathon, something they
- 23:04Speaker 1: will never forget. Now, it does take courage to sign
- 23:09Speaker 1: up and run that twenty six point two miles that
- 23:12Speaker 1: very first time. Okay, you know there are runners around
- 23:15Speaker 1: there that have done twenty odd marathons, but that very
- 23:18Speaker 1: first one is the toughest one mentally, you know when
- 23:21Speaker 1: you're in full of self doubt. But now I think
- 23:24Speaker 1: the reality of what they've achieved is only now slowly
- 23:28Speaker 1: sinking in. So a big thanks to Lauren and Amy
- 23:31Speaker 1: for letting me share their stories. Now this one's for you,
- 23:35Speaker 1: two ladies. This is another powerful vocalist but it's got
- 23:39Speaker 1: a little running theme to it. It's called run to you,
- 23:43Speaker 1: and it's by Whitney Houston. Well us well another powerful
- 24:20Speaker 1: female vocalists. You've gotta have mora minute. There aren't many
- 24:24Speaker 1: of them about it. Let's face it, Winnie Houston and
- 24:30Speaker 1: that was for Lauren and Amy run to you. They
- 24:33Speaker 1: were running to the finish line where their family and
- 24:35Speaker 1: boyfriends and children were at their very very first marathon.
- 24:40Speaker 1: So congratulations, enjoy the moment. Right So now, of course
- 24:46Speaker 1: this show Hour's really gone, has been a great hour.
- 24:48Speaker 1: You know, a lot of a lot of chat with me,
- 24:50Speaker 1: but a lot of great songs coming out now. I
- 24:54Speaker 1: have been talking in recent weeks about the firewalk right now,
- 24:58Speaker 1: I couldn't get down there. I wish, I really wish
- 25:00Speaker 1: I had it gone. But Joe Toldhurst from South Kent
- 25:04Speaker 1: mind send me in this report so I will read
- 25:06Speaker 1: it out exactly as it came in. As the sun
- 25:09Speaker 1: set On Friday, the twelfth September, flames lit up the
- 25:13Speaker 1: night as South Kent Mine hosted its sponsored Firewalk challenge,
- 25:17Speaker 1: raising vital funds to support mental health services across the community.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Dozens of brave participants faced the heat, walking barefoot across
- 25:25Speaker 1: burning embers in a powerful show of courage and solidarity. Together,
- 25:30Speaker 1: they raised a staggering amount for South Kent Mind, helping
- 25:34Speaker 1: the charity continue its mission to provide mental health support
- 25:37Speaker 1: for local people. A special thanks goes to Saga, the
- 25:41Speaker 1: event's headline sponsor, whose colleagues not only entered teams but
- 25:45Speaker 1: also took on the challenge themselves and even lit the
- 25:47Speaker 1: fire to start up the evening sorry, and to UK Firewalk,
- 25:52Speaker 1: who led participants safely and inspired them every step of
- 25:55Speaker 1: the way. Joe actually said and I quote the atmosphere
- 26:00Speaker 1: was electric and the bravery of our walkers was incredible.
- 26:04Speaker 1: We are so grateful to everyone who took part, to
- 26:07Speaker 1: Saga for their amazing support, and to UK Firewalk for
- 26:10Speaker 1: leading such an unforgettable event. The money raise will make
- 26:14Speaker 1: a huge difference for local people struggling with their mental health.
- 26:18Speaker 1: South Kept Mind would like to thank all who took
- 26:20Speaker 1: part and supported the event. Every step across the flames
- 26:24Speaker 1: has helped fuel hope and strength for those in need
- 26:27Speaker 1: of mental health support in South Kent. So there you go.
- 26:30Speaker 1: That was really successful and I'm sure I'll be catching
- 26:33Speaker 1: up with Joe very shortly. Does play hockey for the
- 26:37Speaker 1: Optimist first team. So I'm sure I'll see him somewhere
- 26:39Speaker 1: and just find out how much money they've raised. But
- 26:42Speaker 1: they've really come to the forefront, haven't they a South
- 26:44Speaker 1: kep mind, they've got the driving force now of Joe
- 26:48Speaker 1: and his team and that they are really out there
- 26:51Speaker 1: putting out events and getting their name known and of
- 26:54Speaker 1: course sharing their stories. And just want people know that
- 27:00Speaker 1: there is a place for you there to have a
- 27:02Speaker 1: chat if you've got any mental health problems. Okay, so
- 27:05Speaker 1: we're going to ramp it up a little bit. This
- 27:07Speaker 1: is a classic from nineteen eighty three. Have you ever
- 27:10Speaker 1: got up at the karaoke and sung this one? I
- 27:13Speaker 1: bet you have uptown girl, Billy Joel. I should have
- 27:33Speaker 1: changed that around really and played we didn't start the
- 27:36Speaker 1: fire that one right? Okay, where it's needy, time to go.
- 27:41Speaker 1: But I just want to say that if you want
- 27:44Speaker 1: to come into the studio you've got a sporty story
- 27:46Speaker 1: to tell, then you know, Doby Shy, get in touch
- 27:50Speaker 1: with me Kevin Day via Facebook and we'd love to
- 27:54Speaker 1: have you in. You know, you might you might have
- 27:56Speaker 1: a child, a son or a daughter that's excelling in
- 27:58Speaker 1: sport and you know you want to just bring them
- 28:01Speaker 1: in av a chat and promote what they're doing, promote
- 28:05Speaker 1: their club. It's great. That's why this is what community
- 28:08Speaker 1: radio is all about. So we'd love to see you, right,
- 28:13Speaker 1: So I think it's about it from me. Now. Next
- 28:15Speaker 1: week's show, we've got two guests. We've got a race
- 28:18Speaker 1: director from the Folks and Rotary Half Marathon, Ray Johnson,
- 28:22Speaker 1: which is happening on Sunday, the twenty eighth of September,
- 28:25Speaker 1: and we've got Tom Aspinall who will be one of
- 28:27Speaker 1: the team running the race raising funds for South Kent.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Mind I'll be back on Saturday between ten and eleven
- 28:33Speaker 1: with Ad who will, no doubt afloads to tell us
- 28:36Speaker 1: about last week in Scarborough. But we will of course
- 28:38Speaker 1: have plenty of sport news for you, so stay dry
- 28:42Speaker 1: and you know we'll see you on Saturday
