- 0:00Speaker 1: This is the Ben and Ashley I Almost Famous Podcast
- 0:03Speaker 1: with iHeartRadio.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Hey guys, welcome to the Almost Famous Podcast.
- 0:08Speaker 3: We have People editor People Magazine editor Dorry Jackson on
- 0:12Speaker 3: the zoom with us right now. And this is a
- 0:14Speaker 3: special episode because recently we heard that Ryan Gosling was
- 0:20Speaker 3: inspired by the men of the Bachelorette and he used
- 0:24Speaker 3: what he gathered from watching the show to create the
- 0:28Speaker 3: character of Ken, which he's now nominated for an Oscar for. So,
- 0:32Speaker 3: Dorry Variety did the interview, you guys did the write
- 0:35Speaker 3: up on it all tell us like, do you know
- 0:39Speaker 3: whether Ryan you specific guys or whether it's just like
- 0:43Speaker 3: the Bachelorette in general, the bacheloret and men in general.
- 0:47Speaker 4: So I don't know specifically if he drew inspiration from
- 0:51Speaker 4: particular guys which ones they were, But.
- 0:53Speaker 5: The proof is in the putting.
- 0:55Speaker 4: When you watch this movie and you look back on
- 0:58Speaker 4: it and you think about the Bachelor franchise, you can
- 1:00Speaker 4: just see it's so Bachelor coded. Yeah, we Broie ways
- 1:04Speaker 4: the guys are together, the ways in which the guys
- 1:07Speaker 4: are vying for Barbie's attention. It's so much like the
- 1:11Speaker 4: Bachelor Bachelorette franchise. And I don't know how I didn't
- 1:14Speaker 4: see it the first time, but when he said it,
- 1:16Speaker 4: I thought about it more and I was like, wait,
- 1:18Speaker 4: oh my goodness, this is wild.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Definitely a parody version of it.
- 1:22Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:23Speaker 4: Yeah, but this connection between The Bachelor and the Oscars
- 1:27Speaker 4: is my new favorite Roman empire at this moment.
- 1:31Speaker 6: Okay, so how often do you follow like reality television?
- 1:34Speaker 7: In general?
- 1:36Speaker 4: I watch more than I should, probably, But I did
- 1:39Speaker 4: something recently that said those who watch reality TV actually
- 1:43Speaker 4: possess a high level of intelligence. So I'm gonna say
- 1:46Speaker 4: I'm a genius and anybody else watches reality TV's a genius.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Well that where did that come from? We needed the
- 1:52Speaker 3: person who wrote that study on our podcast next.
- 1:55Speaker 4: Yeah, it was some scientific study that was done back
- 1:58Speaker 4: in twenty eighteen, and it just like resurfaced.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Interesting. Well, so this is the thing about Ryan, you know,
- 2:07Speaker 3: basing his character off of The Bachelorette. He's like, we're
- 2:10Speaker 3: dying to know whether or not he watches it regularly.
- 2:15Speaker 5: Well he said he guts.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:17Speaker 5: Yeah, he was saying he loves to.
- 2:19Speaker 4: Bachel your franchise, he's watching it in that interview.
- 2:22Speaker 2: I need to know the names.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Then you know what I mean, Like, it's like, okay, Ran,
- 2:25Speaker 3: if you're tied in on it, like we need your opinions, like,
- 2:28Speaker 3: come on the podcast.
- 2:31Speaker 4: Maybe I don't know's it's probably kind of weird because
- 2:34Speaker 4: maybe he watched your Guys this season at one point.
- 2:36Speaker 2: You don't even know, That's what I mean.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Like, I'm dying to know whether he watched, well, specifically
- 2:40Speaker 3: for Jared, because Jared loves right. I mean, everybody respects
- 2:43Speaker 3: and loves it. But like that would be so freaking cool.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Do you think that?
- 2:52Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know where I was going.
- 2:54Speaker 6: With the curiosity I have here is you know, you've
- 2:58Speaker 6: you've talked about how he watches the show, how he
- 3:01Speaker 6: used the show to build into his character on the movie.
- 3:08Speaker 6: What I mean without reading the article. So let's pretend
- 3:11Speaker 6: that that article has never been read, because I'll be honest,
- 3:13Speaker 6: I haven't read the article, So I have no idea
- 3:15Speaker 6: that I am.
- 3:16Speaker 7: Here to learn from you.
- 3:18Speaker 6: What negative and positive like characteristics do you think he
- 3:23Speaker 6: could take from the characters on the show into his
- 3:26Speaker 6: Barbie role.
- 3:28Speaker 4: Oh gosh, well, in terms of the negative, I hate
- 3:31Speaker 4: to think about that first, but the first thing I
- 3:33Speaker 4: thought of is when the guys are kind of butting
- 3:36Speaker 4: heads for attention with Barbie, and we see that.
- 3:38Speaker 5: With Ryan's kN and Sema Leise Kim.
- 3:42Speaker 4: They were both butting heads for that attention early on
- 3:46Speaker 4: in moving before they found what did they find?
- 3:50Speaker 5: Was it like nail something?
- 3:55Speaker 4: But you know what I'm talking about, if you saw it.
- 3:57Speaker 4: They found that and then they all came together and
- 4:00Speaker 4: that it was that broie thing that we see that
- 4:02Speaker 4: we love to see from the franchise, and like the
- 4:04Speaker 4: guys are all bonding, they're getting together, they're shooting jokes
- 4:07Speaker 4: and all that. So I see those similarities there very much.
- 4:12Speaker 6: You make a good point because what I think of
- 4:15Speaker 6: when you're when you were explaining that, I was like,
- 4:16Speaker 6: you know, has there ever been in Bachelor history a
- 4:19Speaker 6: moment where like the bachelorette has walked into the mansion
- 4:23Speaker 6: and felt like she doesn't belong like that that actually
- 4:26Speaker 6: like she's not welcome there. These guys are having a
- 4:28Speaker 6: good time on their own. The pool party's fine, okay, when.
- 4:31Speaker 4: The Clare season, I don't know, Yeah, I'm saying, like
- 4:35Speaker 4: everyone else is getting along, nobody's paying attention to me,
- 4:37Speaker 4: nobody cares, and I like having a couple of times
- 4:40Speaker 4: with the bachelorette, Like, I think guys can get into
- 4:43Speaker 4: their own zones sometimes.
- 4:44Speaker 2: I feel like Michelle did that too. She said the
- 4:46Speaker 2: same thing.
- 4:47Speaker 6: Christ The Sutter actually was laughing about that when we
- 4:49Speaker 6: were having drinks at the Golden Wedding. We were just
- 4:51Speaker 6: hanging out, and she was like, I remember walking into
- 4:55Speaker 6: the mansion and all these dudes are looking at me like, hey,
- 4:58Speaker 6: what are you doing here? We're having a good time.
- 5:01Speaker 6: Please take this guy on a date so the rest
- 5:04Speaker 6: of us can hang out where we don't want to,
- 5:05Speaker 6: like sit in this room for too long because it's
- 5:07Speaker 6: nice outside. And she always that's what she like first
- 5:11Speaker 6: admired about Ryan was that he was kind of quiet,
- 5:14Speaker 6: a writer, you know, here to read a lot, but
- 5:17Speaker 6: he was always very excited to see her, and she
- 5:20Speaker 6: didn't feel like all the guys are always excited to
- 5:22Speaker 6: see her.
- 5:22Speaker 7: So maybe this is.
- 5:24Speaker 2: The girls do not act like that.
- 5:26Speaker 7: No, I never felt.
- 5:27Speaker 6: I mean, there was a moment when I was the
- 5:30Speaker 6: Bachelor in the Bahamas where I walked into the room
- 5:32Speaker 6: and I was like, I don't think I'm the one
- 5:34Speaker 6: they want to see right now, Like, yeah, that was
- 5:37Speaker 6: after a really bad date. Everybody was super sick after
- 5:41Speaker 6: the swimming date. But that would be a terrible feeling.
- 5:44Speaker 6: That would actually be a fear of mine as the
- 5:45Speaker 6: lead on a show, going into then Ryan's character in
- 5:49Speaker 6: the Barbie movie where you and I when I watched
- 5:52Speaker 6: a movie, you feel for obviously Barbie because you're like, wait,
- 5:55Speaker 6: all this is changing and she's now the kid on
- 5:58Speaker 6: the outside looking in at the party she wasn't invited to,
- 6:01Speaker 6: wondering what happened.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Right.
- 6:04Speaker 5: Well, Luckily, in Barbie's case, she never really liked Ken
- 6:07Speaker 5: to begin with, So I think that may be a
- 6:09Speaker 5: little bit easier, But there's still those parallels though, for sure.
- 6:13Speaker 2: So do you think that.
- 6:17Speaker 3: I thought that when we first saw this article, I
- 6:21Speaker 3: was like, oh, okay, so he says bachelorette, but like
- 6:23Speaker 3: he probably means that he was his role model was
- 6:26Speaker 3: one of the bachelor's and.
- 6:32Speaker 2: A model.
- 6:38Speaker 3: I hadn't answer immediately on who would have been the
- 6:42Speaker 3: bachelor that he would have had his role model before
- 6:46Speaker 3: I tell you who I think it would have been.
- 6:49Speaker 3: But like, apparently no, he just he was more inspired
- 6:52Speaker 3: by the camaraderie between the guys and less of like
- 6:56Speaker 3: the one solo. Who do you think Dorry would be
- 7:01Speaker 3: like the Bachelor that he would have modeled it after.
- 7:03Speaker 4: I honestly don't know, because I just really see it
- 7:06Speaker 4: as the contestants mostly. I didn't do the lead in
- 7:10Speaker 4: that aspect. I was kind of seeing who was like
- 7:13Speaker 4: Jordan back in the day on what.
- 7:15Speaker 3: Was it that Oh my gosh, well, it's more like
- 7:18Speaker 3: Jordan model himself after Ryan's character, even though you're right
- 7:23Speaker 3: Jordan didn't come well kind of first, I guess becausemble yeah, yeah.
- 7:29Speaker 4: It reminded me of that, like back in the day.
- 7:31Speaker 4: That was the first person I thought of, like the.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Saw hair spray to make it like, yeah, Jordan Kimball
- 7:37Speaker 3: would have been before his time, like he could have
- 7:39Speaker 3: been the guy. Yeah, you know Dorry, I think he
- 7:42Speaker 3: cracked the code that was the guy. Yes, I was
- 7:47Speaker 3: thinking about Sean from this past season, because Sean and
- 7:51Speaker 3: Jordan are very much similar characters.
- 7:54Speaker 6: This is where I get confused, Ashley, because you claimed
- 7:58Speaker 6: even with an interview with Sean, you're like, he isn't
- 8:00Speaker 6: You're not Ken like, but you get the Ken name,
- 8:03Speaker 6: but you're not Kim But now you're still associated with Ken.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Did I ever really say that I was just trying
- 8:08Speaker 2: to be nice.
- 8:08Speaker 7: I'm sure, Okay, fair enough.
- 8:22Speaker 6: This is such an interesting thing. It's always fun dory
- 8:24Speaker 6: when people that we admire admit to watching the show,
- 8:31Speaker 6: admit to leaning in and like you said, maybe doing
- 8:34Speaker 6: it for just to get their mind off of whatever
- 8:37Speaker 6: craziness is going on. But in this article, in the
- 8:40Speaker 6: notes here, Ryan makes a comment that Ken was the
- 8:44Speaker 6: hardest role he's ever had to play. Right, Yeah, that's
- 8:49Speaker 6: so interesting to me for so many reasons. But I
- 8:52Speaker 6: want to get your take on why you think with
- 8:55Speaker 6: all the things that Ryan's done from movies where he's
- 8:58Speaker 6: had to dance in were movies he's had to be,
- 9:03Speaker 6: you know, emotionally, like really invested into, then Ken is
- 9:07Speaker 6: the hardest role.
- 9:08Speaker 7: Why do you think that is?
- 9:10Speaker 5: Well, Ken is.
- 9:10Speaker 4: A doll, so that's part of it. There's no real
- 9:13Speaker 4: character there outside of just like this doll. Like we
- 9:15Speaker 4: didn't really know who Ken was until this film, so
- 9:18Speaker 4: he had to kind of create this persona for Kim
- 9:22Speaker 4: Ken and make it his own, and that I think
- 9:26Speaker 4: he found that in The Bachelor. You know, a little
- 9:29Speaker 4: bit of research, he found his way and it works,
- 9:32Speaker 4: and here we are. He's now Best Supporting Actor nominated Oscar.
- 9:38Speaker 5: He could win.
- 9:39Speaker 4: I don't think he will, but it would be really
- 9:41Speaker 4: cool to be like, oh, yeah, he won.
- 9:43Speaker 5: Because he inspired his role face off The Bachelor.
- 9:46Speaker 7: Oh so good.
- 9:49Speaker 3: It's Jordan and Sean on the Beaches of Paradise. We've
- 9:52Speaker 3: cracked this code. Yes, they should feel really honored.
- 9:57Speaker 7: Well, And I was kind of confused.
- 10:00Speaker 6: You know, the team here at our podcast is very
- 10:03Speaker 6: excited about you coming on and talking about this and
- 10:06Speaker 6: talking about the article, but I was never It never
- 10:10Speaker 6: made sense to me on why this bachelor or Bachelorette
- 10:13Speaker 6: would be fitting for him to learn from. But with
- 10:17Speaker 6: your explanation, it makes complete sense to me now, because
- 10:21Speaker 6: it is it is a fraternity of guys kind of
- 10:26Speaker 6: butting heads, competing, for lack of a better term, trying
- 10:31Speaker 6: to make a name for themselves, trying to show up
- 10:35Speaker 6: so that they are recognized amongst the others, and trying
- 10:40Speaker 6: to come out ahead, which is exactly what this ends
- 10:43Speaker 6: up being when you watch the Barbie movie in the
- 10:46Speaker 6: role of kin. So it does make sense to me now,
- 10:48Speaker 6: and it's fascinating that this is where he went to
- 10:52Speaker 6: to study.
- 10:53Speaker 7: It's just very fascinating to me.
- 10:55Speaker 5: I mean, there's lots to be studied from the franchise, honestly, So.
- 11:00Speaker 7: I just spoke it. I just spoke at a college course.
- 11:02Speaker 7: I think Ashley spoke at this course too.
- 11:04Speaker 6: That literally is a whole course that studies behavior on
- 11:09Speaker 6: the show. Whatever season is airing, they watch it and
- 11:12Speaker 6: they analyze why people are doing what they're doing and
- 11:16Speaker 6: what's making them do that.
- 11:17Speaker 7: It's a whole college course.
- 11:19Speaker 2: I actually that makes sense human behavior.
- 11:22Speaker 4: Yeah, My senior year presentation for college for my communications
- 11:26Speaker 4: class was based off of reality TV dating shows in particular,
- 11:30Speaker 4: So there's lots to be studied with, you know, how
- 11:32Speaker 4: people think and move in that space. And I think
- 11:36Speaker 4: it really really worked well for Ryan taking that inspiration
- 11:40Speaker 4: from the Bacher of putting this into Barbie, the whole
- 11:42Speaker 4: Hembo culture.
- 11:44Speaker 5: It's all in Jordan.
- 11:49Speaker 2: I'm just to put out there. I thought it was.
- 11:52Speaker 3: I said last week, I was like, I think it's
- 11:54Speaker 3: Brad Wallmack if it was a lead, because isn't Brad
- 11:57Speaker 3: Walllmack just like a walking cat doll. Yeah, that's he's
- 12:02Speaker 3: like we haven't seen so much. We haven't seen much
- 12:04Speaker 3: of him in the past decade, but like when he
- 12:06Speaker 3: was a Bachelor twice, he was such a cun or
- 12:10Speaker 3: at least that's what I thought Ken was gonna be.
- 12:13Speaker 3: You know.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Ryan definitely made it a little bit more like well
- 12:17Speaker 2: of a.
- 12:17Speaker 5: Jordan nuanced and all that. All.
- 12:20Speaker 3: Yeah, well, all right.
- 12:22Speaker 6: The uh Barbie Came to life. It's a great movie.
- 12:26Speaker 6: Obviously Ryan is up for their Award for Best Supporting Actor.
- 12:31Speaker 6: It's very exciting that this is coming full circle to
- 12:34Speaker 6: the Bachelor family and Bachelor Nation. It always feels like
- 12:39Speaker 6: dory to close out here. When the Bachelor seems like
- 12:42Speaker 6: it's going away, it finds new breath in either for example,
- 12:47Speaker 6: the Golden or this season with Joey and then Charity
- 12:51Speaker 6: season that just finished, and then with Ryan Gosling publicly
- 12:55Speaker 6: supporting that he watched the show. I know there's people going, well,
- 12:58Speaker 6: if Ryan does it, I can.
- 12:59Speaker 7: Do it too. So it just keep staying alive.
- 13:03Speaker 5: No need to feel shame. The Bachelor franchise is and
- 13:07Speaker 5: always will be amazing.
- 13:08Speaker 7: So that's all right. Dorry, thanks for joining us. Awesome
- 13:12Speaker 7: awesome interview. Thanks for giving us.
- 13:14Speaker 6: Some insights into why Ryan Gosling chose the Bachelorette to
- 13:18Speaker 6: learn from For his role for Ken in the most
- 13:22Speaker 6: recent Bard movie. We really appreciate it, of course.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Thanks for having me see you, Dory. Thank you.
