Latest / Strictly Business / The Asset Class: Malcolm Charles
Transcript
- 0:00You're listening to Strictly Business Podcast with Lindsay Williams.
- 0:05The war against Iran by the United States and Israel has caused problems for markets
- 0:10globally,
- 0:12but particularly for emerging markets.
- 0:13And South Africa has not been spared with me as Malcolm Charles, Portfolio Manager
- 0:19at 91 in Cape Town.
- 0:21Last time we spoke, Malcolm, everything was going so well.
- 0:23And as always in markets, we knew that something must happen, but we didn't
- 0:28realise the extent
- 0:30of this particular happening.
- 0:32It really has been quite brutal, hasn't it?
- 0:34To be honest, Lindsay, it's been horrible.
- 0:36It has shaken the entire market, global market, as you said, and the
- 0:41ramifications, unfortunately,
- 0:43are dire for many, many economies.
- 0:45And I think the scarring for growth across, no one's going to be untouched by
- 0:51this.
- 0:51And that's the sad thing is, you know, so many countries were coming right.
- 0:58but projection was positive, inflation was muted, growth was going to be okay,
- 1:04interest rates were going to be cut in many jurisdictions.
- 1:07And every single one of those assumptions is now off the table.
- 1:11Yes, I think the question now is, is this just a blip?
- 1:14Or is this a change in trend?
- 1:17And I suppose when you look at it from an essay specific point of view, a couple of
- 1:22years ago,
- 1:23it might have been the second one, a change in trend.
- 1:26But now we've gone into this crisis, and it is a crisis, slightly better off than
- 1:32we might have been.
- 1:34No, absolutely.
- 1:36I think the silver lining is we went in pretty decent.
- 1:37We just had a fantastic budget where it was conservative.
- 1:41We had a ratings upgrade last year.
- 1:44The RAND had rallied dramatically throughout last year.
- 1:48Interest rates had been cut.
- 1:49Inflation was at 3%.
- 1:51So you can go on and on about how things were actually coming right.
- 1:54We were started to see decent growth,
- 1:58employment was even shown tentative signs of improving.
- 2:03So we were in a very, very good space to go into it.
- 2:07As you said, if it had been a couple of years ago when we couldn't even keep the
- 2:11lights on,
- 2:11then we might as well actually have turned everything off and almost given up.
- 2:14So the country was in a much stronger position, and it's always good to be in a
- 2:21strong position when the crisis hits,
- 2:23because then you can actually...
- 2:24Try and mitigate some of it, like we saw with the petrol price increase.
- 2:28You know, the minister announcing a three rand reduction in the levy.
- 2:32Now, we would not have been able to do that even a year ago.
- 2:37Yes, it's cold comfort, though, when you see the markets that I'm seeing on my
- 2:44screen now with the South African 10-year bond yield at
- 2:469.04%.
- 2:46Bear in mind, it's come down from exactly a year ago, Malcolm, exactly a year ago.
- 2:51Liberation Day was...
- 2:53Actually, you know, it's 364 days ago.
- 2:56Liberation Day put the South African bond yield at something like 11.15%
- 3:02for the 10 years.
- 3:03Now 9.04%.
- 3:05But it has been to, I think, below 8%, hasn't it?
- 3:09Yeah, no, no.
- 3:11So it depends on where your reference, if your reference point was a year ago, then
- 3:17we still, we fantastic.
- 3:19If your reference point was a month and a bit ago, then you're a little bit sad
- 3:22because, you know, the All Bond Index.
- 3:24on last month, gave up almost 7%, but it had given you
- 3:2929% from a year ago.
- 3:32So it really is the reference point.
- 3:35But to me, the sad thing is it was unnecessary.
- 3:39It's not something that's made the world a better place.
- 3:42And I think a lot of financial pain has been taken across companies, across
- 3:48people,
- 3:50across funds.
- 3:52And that's the new reality.
- 3:54It's a crazy reality right now.
- 3:56And it's a very volatile reality.
- 3:57Yes, it is.
- 3:59It was so unnecessary.
- 4:00And we could go on for a long time.
- 4:02But it's not our job to do that about what has happened in the last four weeks.
- 4:07But the reality is what we're going to do from now on.
- 4:10And what are you going to do over the last month?
- 4:12Have you been active in your portfolio construction?
- 4:16Absolutely.
- 4:17We've had to be very, very active because It wasn't something that was like, you
- 4:24know, a change of economic cycle.
- 4:26This was a shock to the system.
- 4:28So,
- 4:30you know, you couldn't really preempt it.
- 4:32So we've had to very quickly reduce risk.
- 4:34We've had to increase our optionality and our protection in portfolios and just try
- 4:41and preserve
- 4:43capital as much as we can.
- 4:45We're in a very different inflation and interest rate environment than we were a
- 4:48month ago.
- 4:48We would, you know, as a...
- 4:49as I mentioned earlier, we've gone from expecting two rate cuts in 2026 to, you
- 4:56know,
- 4:56if we get two to three hikes this year.
- 4:59I don't think anyone will be completely surprised.
- 5:02So, you know, we've had a changed portfolio risk.
- 5:07We've had a look to try and increase yield with very little risk associated with that
- 5:13yield.
- 5:15Whereas a couple of months ago, you were happy to take a lot more risk in the
- 5:19portfolio.
- 5:20So absolutely a very active time.
- 5:22But, you know, things change and you have to change with it and you have to adapt
- 5:28your view, adapt your portfolio.
- 5:30most importantly, bring down the risk in the portfolio.
- 5:33Yesterday, which was the last day of the first quarter of 2026, markets rallied
- 5:39strongly.
- 5:41Wallet price came down.
- 5:43Asset classes like equities went through the roof.
- 5:45I think the Nasdaq was up nearly 4%, for example.
- 5:46Bond markets rallied.
- 5:47In other words, yields coming down.
- 5:50And a lot of people might say that that was window dressing at the end of the
- 5:53first quarter.
- 5:55Other people will say, well, it's just another Trumpism, another careless comment
- 6:00from the President of the United States,
- 6:02and the markets reacted to that, and they should know better.
- 6:03But what do you think?
- 6:04Do you think that the worst is over, Malcolm?
- 6:08Yeah, it's an interesting question, because I think a little bit of both
- 6:11happened.
- 6:11I think, you know, there is a behavioral end of the first quarter sort of in some
- 6:16markets.
- 6:18And I think Trump is desperate for an off ramp.
- 6:21The problem is, it's a bit harder than you tariffs.
- 6:24Tariffs were one-sided.
- 6:25He decided to put them on so he could decide to delay them or take them off.
- 6:30When you're at war with someone, the other party needs to agree.
- 6:33And unfortunately, the longer it's gone on, if this was two weeks ago, I would
- 6:39have said,
- 6:40absolutely, it's an off ramp and he can claim his victory.
- 6:44And I think we would have been okay.
- 6:46The fact that it's gone on for a month and he's got ground troops in the area.
- 6:51I think you've got to be a little bit naive if you think that we can wrap up and
- 6:58say all the risk is off the
- 7:00table right now.
- 7:02I think caution remains and it's a little bit early to bet the farm on any markets
- 7:06right now.
- 7:07Okay, so you're saying to yourself the round has gone from 15.50 to 17 plus.
- 7:13The bond rates have done what we discussed earlier on.
- 7:17The South African Reserve Bank and the authorities in South Africa have been
- 7:24swift to move in a way that they couldn't have moved a
- 7:26couple of years ago.
- 7:28But are you waiting with your tender drive for something concrete to materialize in
- 7:32the next couple of weeks, hopefully?
- 7:34Yeah, I think that's the prudent outlook.
- 7:36You're tempted to go the human nature way and say, I'm going to back it against
- 7:41this.
- 7:41But we custodians of capital, we've got to do what's right.
- 7:45I don't mind missing the first little bit of a recovery as opposed to getting in too
- 7:52early and wiping out capital.
- 7:54So I think it's prudent to be a little bit more cautious.
- 7:56I think you can be a little bit more active in these markets when you have big
- 8:00swings.
- 8:02But to bet the farm on
- 8:04Trump miraculously finishing a war after a month, I think is probably a little bit
- 8:11irresponsible.
- 8:13Malcolm, thanks so much for your time and very good luck.
- 8:14And I look forward to our next chat, which might be sooner than you think.
