- 0:00DANI: Honestly, none of the sound is going to be ideal
- 0:02today because I'm also getting over another cold.
- 0:06KARA: Yeah. So. Also flying, probably.
- 0:06DANI: Um, probably
- 0:09from going to Disneyland again. I always mask
- 0:12up when I fly and I'm like obsessive about hand
- 0:15sanitizer. Not that can't still be the cause.
- 0:18KARA: Right.
- 0:18DANI: But I'm going to let him in, right?
- 0:18KARA: Sure.
- 0:21For context, guys, Dani's cat-sitting a friend's
- 0:24cat for three weeks and he's screaming. How are
- 0:28you? How's LA? Warm.
- 0:28KARA: Yeah.
- 0:28DANI: Yeah.
- 0:28KARA: It's not too
- 0:32bad today, minus the blizzard coming up.
- 0:32DANI: I wish
- 0:35you hadn't told me about that.
- 0:35KARA: I'm sorry.
- 0:35DANI: We're
- 0:37talking into the future, so I'm just hoping that,
- 0:40like, it's not that big of a deal. Because it's
- 0:42so warm, I don't think the snow's gonna stick.
- 0:44I hope. Right? Isn't that kind of how snow works?
- 0:48KARA: Yeah. If it's warm enough.
- 0:48DANI: The reason it stuck
- 0:50so much was because it was like eight degrees
- 0:52last time.
- 0:52KARA: Yeah. Fingers crossed.
- 0:52DANI: Because I really
- 0:55can't. I can't do it. I can't do this again.
- 0:58I mean, what I'll do is I'll just stay entirely
- 1:00inside.
- 1:00KARA: Yeah.
- 1:00DANI: I didn't miss anything in New York?
- 1:03KARA: Literally, no. I did Valentine's Day, which was
- 1:06nice.
- 1:06DANI: Cute.
- 1:06KARA: I did an ASL tour at the Studio Museum
- 1:09in Harlem. Really fun. I've been going once a
- 1:12month to that museum. Having a great time. Then
- 1:15we got dinner and then we watched Sleepless in
- 1:16Seattle.
- 1:16DANI: Cute.
- 1:16KARA: Classic Valentine's Day movie.
- 1:20DANI: I've still never seen it.
- 1:20KARA: It's pretty good. It's
- 1:22cute. The other two movies I saw this month were
- 1:25Some Like It Hot, which I've seen already.
- 1:25DANI: Oh,
- 1:27so good.
- 1:27KARA: So good. A has never seen it, so we
- 1:30did that. And then I showed A, La La Land. I
- 1:33have a soft spot for La La Land.
- 1:33DANI: Oh my god, you
- 1:35are Paolo.
- 1:35KARA: Yeah?
- 1:35DANI: That's fucking crazy. It's his
- 1:38favorite movie.
- 1:38KARA: I think it's so sweet, and A
- 1:41didn't get into it.
- 1:41DANI: I hated it my first time
- 1:44watching it. I saw it with my parents. And I
- 1:47hated it because we're all like true musical
- 1:50heads.
- 1:50KARA: Okay.
- 1:50DANI: And obviously it's not like a true
- 1:53musical.
- 1:53KARA: No, I think the music...
- 1:53DANI: It's like an
- 1:56experimental musical almost.
- 1:56KARA: Yeah.
- 1:56DANI: That being
- 2:00said, it's really grown on me and now I love
- 2:02it. I think because I don't live in LA anymore,
- 2:04it's like a fun way to romanticize.
- 2:04KARA: I cried at
- 2:08the end and A was like, what are you doing?
- 2:10I was like, they support each other's dreams.
- 2:13DANI: Yeah, no, it's really heartwarming and also
- 2:16bittersweet at the end.
- 2:16KARA: And A was like, this
- 2:18is stupid. They're not together.
- 2:18DANI; Yeah, it's a
- 2:20tough movie. Did it make you want to go to LA?
- 2:24Were you watching it thinking, that's where Dani
- 2:26is right now.
- 2:26KARA: I did think that.
- 2:26DANI: You said, actually,
- 2:29no.
- 2:29KARA: Well, the first scene is everyone's stuck
- 2:32in traffic.
- 2:32DANI: Yeah, I know.
- 2:32KARA: Yeah.
- 2:32DANI: Which is, that
- 2:36opening scene was when my dad turned to me, he
- 2:38went, oh no. Like, in the theater.
- 2:38KARA: And then everyone
- 2:42gets out of the car and starts dancing on the
- 2:43freeway. It's like, now, I don't know, it took
- 2:47me years, but that's honestly Damien Chazelle.
- 2:49KARA: It's a love letter to LA.
- 2:49DANI: Yeah.
- 2:49KARA: I get it, and
- 2:52I love, I do love when Ryan Gosling and Emmett
- 2:54Stone are dancing, and you can see the beautiful
- 2:57sunset over LA.
- 2:57DANI: They have fantastic chemistry.
- 2:59I mean, Crazy Stupid Love is one of my favorite
- 3:01films.
- 3:01KARA: So good.
- 3:01DANI: Film capital F. I think it's
- 3:05up there with the greats.
- 3:05KARA: Yeah, with Steve Carell
- 3:07and the New Balance shoes.
- 3:07DANI: Oh, my God. Steve
- 3:09Carell is so hot in that movie.
- 3:09KARA: Who is?
- 3:09DANI: Steve
- 3:12Carell.
- 3:12KARA: He's hot in that?
- 3:12DANI: Yeah, I have such a
- 3:14crush on Steve Carell.
- 3:14KARA: I love that.
- 3:14DANI: Do you want
- 3:16to talk about the drama going on online in the
- 3:19ASL community?
- 3:19KARA: Yeah, so I lightly know about
- 3:22it. So basically, ASLPinnacle.
- 3:22DANI: Yeah, his response
- 3:26has been like the best.
- 3:26KARA: He is very well spoken.
- 3:29His name is Jason. And I found out about the
- 3:32controversy through him. But basically, two CODAs.
- 3:35DANI: I found out a lot messier. Because I follow everyone
- 3:37involved.
- 3:37KARA: I saw that you follow them. I don't
- 3:40follow the CODAs.
- 3:40DANI: All these, well I follow
- 3:42Claudia. I don't know if I follow the other kid.
- 3:44KARA: Yeah.
- 3:44DANI: Maybe I do. I've seen his videos a lot.
- 3:47KARA: Anyway, from what I know, jump in if I missed
- 3:50anything, but these two CODAs, Claudia and who's
- 3:53the other guy?
- 3:53DANI: I think it's Jacob.
- 3:53KARA: Jacob or something.
- 3:56DANI: His name's Jacob.
- 3:56KARA: He's young. He looks like he's
- 3:5819.
- 3:58DANI: Yeah, he's like a baby.
- 3:58KARA: The two of them got
- 4:01invited to Paris to work on this app where they
- 4:04teach sign. And you see clips of them, and it's,
- 4:07like, videos of them, like, teaching basic signs.
- 4:10But then Jason, who is a deaf man, he runs the
- 4:13ASLPinnacle Instagram. Big fan of him.
- 4:13DANI: Yeah.
- 4:16KARA: But he posted, like... This is not really your
- 4:19position to be doing this. While you guys are
- 4:22CODAs and ASL is your mother tongue, you are
- 4:25taking jobs from deaf people, basically. And
- 4:28that's kind of all I know about it. Do you know
- 4:29anything else?
- 4:29DANI: No, I mean, pretty much just that.
- 4:32A couple other deaf creators that I follow called
- 4:36them out a little less nicely which is their
- 4:39full right. I'm like here for the tea of it all.
- 4:41KARA: Jason was like shame on you and then tagged the
- 4:44two people.
- 4:44DANI: And unfortunately, Instagram like cut
- 4:48off his first video right as he was trying to
- 4:51say, like, this language is not yours to sell.
- 4:51KARA: Yes.
- 4:56DANI: And it cut off at, this language is not yours.
- 4:58KARA: Uh-oh.
- 4:58DANI: So then there was, like, a whole wave
- 5:01of people on the other side being like, whoa,
- 5:03whoa, whoa, you can't just decide that, like.
- 5:06KARA: It's not their language.
- 5:06DANI: That's why the second
- 5:07video he had to be like, yes, if you're a CODA,
- 5:09sign language is your mother tongue, that's not
- 5:12what I'm saying. Like, people, I feel like people
- 5:14were just, like, trying to misunderstand him
- 5:17on purpose, almost.
- 5:17KARA: Yeah.
- 5:17DANI: I don't know. Outrage
- 5:20economy. People, like, love to be mad. In this
- 5:23case, though, like, come on, guys.
- 5:23KARA: Yeah.
- 5:23DANI: Do you
- 5:26like all the Avatar memes I've been sending you?
- 5:28KARA: I said one thing about Avatar on the podcast
- 5:30and now every time you get like a weird Avatar
- 5:32Instagram reel, you have to send it to me.
- 5:32DANI: I
- 5:35do. I feel like they're for you.
- 5:35KARA: Thank you.
- 5:35DANI: People
- 5:38are being so weird about this movie.
- 5:38KARA: They are.
- 5:41DANI: And speaking of which, I liked Wuthering Heights.
- 5:44KARA: I didn't see it.
- 5:44DANI: Should we get to the show?
- 5:44KARA: Yeah,
- 5:47let's do it.
- 5:47DANI: I didn't look up this painting.
- 6:02KARA: Okay, it's called The Art of Painting.
- 6:02DANI: Yeah,
- 6:05I thought, I was like, surely that can't be one.
- 6:08KARA: It's a Vermeer painting.
- 6:08DANI: Oh, okay, it is one.
- 6:11KARA: And it depicts a woman in blue posing, she's
- 6:15holding a trumpet, and then a painter is painting
- 6:17her.
- 6:17DANI: Oh, okay.
- 6:17KARA: And the painting was once owned
- 6:20by Hitler.
- 6:20DANI: Oh.
- 6:20KARA: Yeah. It wasn't confiscated. It
- 6:24seems like the family voluntarily sold it to
- 6:27him. But, you know, like, the Nazis hoarded art.
- 6:30DANI: Yeah.
- 6:30KARA: For, like, any art they deemed, like, cool,
- 6:33Aryan art.
- 6:33DANI: Yeah.
- 6:33KARA: So that Vermeer painting was
- 6:36one of them. Anyways, I think it's just called
- 6:38that because Regina has an art show. I tried
- 6:41to do some, like, allegorical, metaphorical references.
- 6:44I was like, no. It's just because she had the
- 6:46art show.
- 6:46DANI: There's a lot of art in this episode.
- 6:49KARA: There is. A lot of signing, which I was delighted.
- 6:52DANI: A lot of signing, and not as much sim-comming
- 6:55as we're used to.
- 6:55KARA: I know. I was delighted.
- 6:55DANI: Paolo
- 6:58watched this episode with me, and he multiple
- 7:01times went, why are they talking if they're signing?
- 7:03KARA: Great question, Paolo. The first scene, Emmett
- 7:06is putting on his hearing aid, and he is practicing
- 7:10his speech therapy in front of the mirror. And
- 7:12one of the sentences is what. May I please have
- 7:15some pie? May I please have some pie?
- 7:15DANI: These are
- 7:17hard sentences.
- 7:17KARA: Yeah, I don't... When I did speech
- 7:21therapy, I don't remember having homework and
- 7:24given full sentences to repeat over and over.
- 7:24DANI: But
- 7:28maybe that was because you weren't starting as
- 7:30a teenager?
- 7:30KARA: Yeah, maybe. I remember doing sounds,
- 7:34but not sentences.
- 7:34DANI: He's playing catch-up.
- 7:34KARA: Yeah,
- 7:38he is playing catch-up.
- 7:38DANI: So maybe that's why.
- 7:40KARA: And yeah, this hearing aid seems very uncomfortable.
- 7:43It's because the captions keeps saying static,
- 7:45shrill.
- 7:45DANI: Yeah. I had a question about that logistically.
- 7:49Like, does he need the hearing aid to practice
- 7:52speaking?
- 7:52KARA: It helps to hear the sound of your
- 7:56own voice.
- 7:56DANI: But isn't the whole thing that he
- 7:58can't really still? And so he's having a hard
- 8:00time?
- 8:00KARA: Yes, but I think the hearing aid is going
- 8:03to help him feel the vibrations and hear the
- 8:06sound of his own voice better, to help him practice.
- 8:09DANI: Got it.
- 8:09KARA: Which I'll get into later because Bay
- 8:12is gonna try it out for herself.
- 8:12DANI: Yeah.
- 8:12KARA: Anyways,
- 8:15yeah, this hearing aid seems uncomfortable. Sometimes
- 8:17if hearing aids aren't working properly, they
- 8:20make this very high frequency feedback sound
- 8:23and it's very painful. It also seems like he's
- 8:25not used to wearing it. So every sound he hears
- 8:27is painful to him. Poor guy.
- 8:27DANI: This one girl that
- 8:31I follow, she has like a hearing husband. She's
- 8:34really pretty, blonde.
- 8:34KARA: Okay.
- 8:34DANI: I don't know her
- 8:37name. But she has this one video that went pretty
- 8:39viral of her being like, I haven't been wearing
- 8:41my implants for a couple of weeks and so I'm
- 8:44finally gonna put them back on and then she puts
- 8:46them on and she's like what's that sound and
- 8:48it's her breathing and all the comments are like
- 8:51I cannot imagine the overstimulation.
- 8:51KARA: It's so
- 8:54overstimulating.
- 8:54DANI: Yeah.
- 8:54KARA: It's so loud and it also
- 8:57doesn't sound like the way you guys sound it's
- 8:59like-
- 8:59DANI: Right.
- 8:59KARA: Brassy or tinny so it's just not that
- 9:02pleasant so and Emmett's not thrilled and then
- 9:05Bay comes in, jumps up behind him. And he's basically
- 9:08like, why are you here?
- 9:08DANI: Don't sneak up on him.
- 9:11KARA: I know. And then Olivia, Cameron's girlfriend
- 9:14comes in and is like, girl, I get it. Why don't
- 9:16you have some alcohol, you minor child?
- 9:16DANI: They
- 9:20really, they take her character, like, too far
- 9:22in this episode.
- 9:22KARA: Way too far.
- 9:22DANI: Like, there's just
- 9:25no way someone would be like that. Be like, have
- 9:28a shot or two, 16-year-old.
- 9:28KARA: Yeah, and Bay rightfully
- 9:31is like, what the fuck?
- 9:31DANI: Yeah. She says, what
- 9:33are they going to give you for your SATs? Heroin?
- 9:36And he, like, laughs. I'm like, it's not funny,
- 9:38actually.
- 9:38KARA: No. Now we're at basketball practice
- 9:41at Buckner. Simone is still holding a grudge
- 9:44after Daphne got that point guard position, and
- 9:46she's just not playing along. It's a team sport.
- 9:49You gotta be a team.
- 9:49DANI: We don't get a lot of Simone
- 9:52in this episode.
- 9:52KARA: Good.
- 9:52DANI: I know, thank God. I thought
- 9:55we'd get more of her being a bitch. I mean, she
- 9:57is a bitch in this episode, but, like, she's
- 9:59not that relevant.
- 9:59KARA: Yeah. And then Regina is
- 10:03preparing her art for the gallery, showing. She's
- 10:07adjusting some masks on the wall.
- 10:07DANI: Okay, she was
- 10:10annoying me this whole episode, I'm going to
- 10:12be honest. I'm, like, happy for her, but also,
- 10:15I don't know.
- 10:15KARA: I also guess they're showing more
- 10:17than one piece of her work. It seems like it's
- 10:19the Phoebe Bridgers Punisher piece and then the
- 10:21mask.
- 10:21DANI: And then the masks, yeah. But I feel like
- 10:24she made a big deal about having... Letting him
- 10:27show one piece. So then it's like, wait, what?
- 10:30There's two now?
- 10:30KARA: Yeah.
- 10:30DANI: But specifically, the
- 10:33Punisher piece is not for sale, but the masks
- 10:35are.
- 10:35KARA: No, the masks are not for sale, but the
- 10:38Punisher piece is.
- 10:38DANI: No, because she says later
- 10:41he's going to charge $500 for some old masks.
- 10:44KARA: But then later, Bay and Regina talk, and Bay
- 10:48goes, I noticed the masks and the wings weren't
- 10:50for sale, and I noticed the wings were made of
- 10:53bay leaves.
- 10:53DANI: Okay, that has to be a plot hole
- 10:55then. She explicitly is like, he's charging $500
- 10:58for some old masks. And then later on, she says
- 11:02about the Punisher piece, this one's not for
- 11:03sale.
- 11:03KARA: Really?
- 11:03DANI: Yeah.
- 11:03KARA: Interesting.
- 11:03DANI: Guys, what's
- 11:07the truth here?
- 11:07KARA: She makes $500 later.
- 11:07DANI: Yeah.
- 11:07KARA: I
- 11:11just don't know where from.
- 11:11DANI: He splits it. The
- 11:13gallery commission is 50-50. So he gets 250
- 11:17of that.
- 11:17KARA: But she gets a check for 500.
- 11:17DANI: I know.
- 11:20KARA: So I thought the piece was $1,000 and he
- 11:24got $500 already and then gave her $500.
- 11:24DANI: Oh my
- 11:27God.
- 11:27KARA: Guys, explain.
- 11:27DANI: What is the truth?
- 11:27KARA: Next scene,
- 11:31Kathryn's at a cafe with Brizia, Justina Mercado.
- 11:33Welcome back. This cafe is really cute. It had
- 11:36nice stained glass windows.
- 11:36DANI: I agree. It didn't
- 11:39seem like it belonged to KC.
- 11:39KARA: I don't know.
- 11:42DANI: Well, I mean, first of all, that cafe is in Los
- 11:44Angeles, California.
- 11:44KARA: I figured.
- 11:44KARA: We need to go
- 11:47to KC so we can stop ripping on it.
- 11:47DANI: So true.
- 11:50KARA: Brizia was fired from the hospital. under the
- 11:53guise of, like, erratic work habits and showing
- 11:55up late, like, twice. But we all know it's because
- 11:58she's a whistleblower.
- 11:58DANI: Yeah.
- 11:58KARA: And Kathryn's
- 12:01like, that's okay, you can get another job. They
- 12:02can't do that.
- 12:02DANI: Yeah, this is an episode of Kathryn
- 12:05being like, they can't do that, and her being
- 12:07like, well, they can, and they did.
- 12:07KARA: They can,
- 12:09and they did, and there's nothing I can do about
- 12:11it, because I don't have money for a fancy lawyer
- 12:13like you do.
- 12:13DANI: Yeah.
- 12:13KARA: And also, I am being blacklisted
- 12:16from getting any nursing job. Which sucks.
- 12:16DANI: Yeah.
- 12:19KARA: And if I can't get a job, I'm going to drop out
- 12:22of the lawsuit because I need to feed my family.
- 12:25DANI: Yeah. I mean, I guess, to be fair, like, Brizia
- 12:28is not getting – she won't get money from the
- 12:30lawsuit.
- 12:30KARA: No. She's just, like, doing them a solid.
- 12:33DANI: Yeah. So she's just, like, risking herself and
- 12:36her reputation.
- 12:36KARA: And her family.
- 12:36DANI: Yeah.
- 12:36KARA: She's like,
- 12:39why would I do that?
- 12:39DANI: I will say they're definitely
- 12:42– this is definitely motivated by them punishing
- 12:45her for speaking out. If I were a hospital, would
- 12:49I want to hire the nurse that very publicly is
- 12:51going, yeah, I'm pretty sure I switched those
- 12:53babies?
- 12:53KARA: Perhaps not.
- 12:53DANI: Probably not. But that's
- 12:56not what's happening here.
- 12:56KARA: No.
- 12:56DANI: For sure. I guess
- 12:58she'd be extra careful going forward with the
- 13:01babies. So it's probably fine.
- 13:01KARA: But it's also
- 13:03because they overworked her.
- 13:03DANI: Yes. Completely.
- 13:03KARA: Yeah.
- 13:06DANI: Okay. That's why.
- 13:06KARA: Great. Next scene, Wilke and
- 13:09Daphne are outside of Buckner walking around.
- 13:12DANI: Thank God Wilke's back.
- 13:12KARA: Thank God. They were
- 13:14both named Athlete of the Month.
- 13:14DANI: Yeah, kind of
- 13:17random. Random thing that exists. Is that a thing
- 13:20at schools?
- 13:20KARA: My school has Students of the Month,
- 13:23but not Athletes of the Month, I think.
- 13:23DANI: Okay.
- 13:25KARA: But they go all out for these students. You get
- 13:29a steak dinner, Kansas City Royal tickets, and
- 13:33free sports drinks. And then all you have to
- 13:35do is take, like, the corporate boosters. XS Rush
- 13:38which is Gatorade. It's Gatorade.
- 13:38DANI: Okay.
- 13:38KARA: All
- 13:40they have to do is basically take the corporate
- 13:42sponsors on a tour of the school and be like,
- 13:45thanks to your money we have these wonderful
- 13:47fancy things and with more money of yours we
- 13:51can make more fancy things, like the brand new
- 13:54aquatic center that we want to build.
- 13:54DANI: What is
- 13:56Buckner's deal?
- 13:56KARA: It's crazy. Drives me crazy.
- 13:56DANI: I never
- 14:00was exposed to like private schools like that
- 14:02so, yeah I don't know how accurate that is.
- 14:02KARA: Then,
- 14:06Bay is in an art studio learning to be an empath.
- 14:08She's blasting music in her headphones while
- 14:11repeating, May I please have some pie? May I
- 14:13please have some pie?
- 14:13DANI: I know, she's trying to
- 14:15understand Emmett. I felt really bad for her
- 14:18this whole episode because she's, like, trying
- 14:20her best and Emmett's really lashing out at her.
- 14:22KARA. Being a dick. Is totally... boy.
- 14:22DANI: Does he get good
- 14:26again? Does he pull himself out of this or is
- 14:28he like this the rest of the show?
- 14:28KARA: I don't know.
- 14:30I think he continues sucking.
- 14:30DANI: Oh, we only got
- 14:33like three good episodes before he turned into
- 14:35a brat.
- 14:35KARA: I know. Even when he said I love you,
- 14:37he was still a brat the entire episode.
- 14:37DANI: Yeah.
- 14:39But I will say Bay is a brat to everyone else
- 14:42this episode. So I guess the cycle's continuing.
- 14:45KARA: Regina comes up from behind and is like, stop
- 14:47that. You'll go deaf.
- 14:47DANI: You'll damage your hearing.
- 14:50KARA: And Bay explains, well, I'm trying to understand
- 14:53what Emmett's, what it's like to speak without
- 14:55hearing your own voice? And then she says, it
- 14:57feels like your voice is separate from your body,
- 14:59which I think is very true. I agree with that.
- 15:01When I don't have my implants on and I'm speaking,
- 15:03it does feel like. It's kind of untethered. Also,
- 15:06it's very hard to regulate pitch and volume and
- 15:10tone when you can't hear yourself. Hence why
- 15:12I think Emmett has the hearing aid on to practice.
- 15:15KARA: A says when I don't have my implants on and I'm
- 15:17speaking, I speak very softly because I can't
- 15:20hear myself. But when I was younger, I used to
- 15:22speak very loud. Again, because I couldn't hear
- 15:25myself. But you basically, as you learn speech,
- 15:29you just rely on vibration and muscle memory.
- 15:31I mean, speech is just... Your tongue's a muscle.
- 15:34DANI: Yeah.
- 15:34KARA: So it's all muscle memory at that point.
- 15:37DANI: I feel for Emmett. It's really scary to start
- 15:39that so late.
- 15:39KARA: Yeah. And then Regina says, I get
- 15:43it. I used to stick my head underwater to understand
- 15:45what it feels like for Daphne. I have no empathy
- 15:47for her.
- 15:47DANI: For Regina?
- 15:47KARA: Yeah. She said I used to
- 15:50stick my head underwater and then I didn't teach
- 15:52her sign.
- 15:52DANI: Right.
- 15:52KARA: Or get her hearing aids.
- 15:52DANI: Yeah,
- 15:55I was kind of wondering, like, when did you do
- 15:58that?
- 15:58KARA: Right. Anyway. I just went, I don't care.
- 16:01But first she said, I would like you to come
- 16:03to my art show. And the exhibit is called New
- 16:06Voices from the Prairie.
- 16:06DANI: Yeah.
- 16:06KARA: The Prairie?
- 16:06DANI: I
- 16:09know. Are we in the Prairie? Is Kansas City in
- 16:12the Prairie?
- 16:12KARA: No. Well.
- 16:12DANI: Is it?
- 16:12KARA: A prairie is like,
- 16:16when I think of a prairie, I think of nothing.
- 16:18DANI: I think of Little House on the Prairie.
- 16:18KARA: I think
- 16:20of grassland and prairie dogs. I don't think
- 16:23of Kansas City, a metropolitan area.
- 16:23DANI: Yeah, but
- 16:26is Missouri? Do they have a prairie?
- 16:26KARA: I don't
- 16:29think so.
- 16:29DANI: Guys, weigh in. I would love if a fan
- 16:32from Kansas City wrote to explain to us what's
- 16:35going on. And no, I will not be Googling it.
- 16:37KARA: And Bay even makes a statement like, it does
- 16:40sound like it's something like an ignorant, rich
- 16:43New York guy would call it.
- 16:43DANI: Yeah.
- 16:43KARA: She kind of
- 16:46rolls her eyes at the name of the show.
- 16:46DANI: Well,
- 16:48she kind of rolls her eyes at everything about
- 16:50the show. And I feel a little bad for Regina
- 16:54because Bay is being like such a brat about it.
- 16:58KARA: Yeah.
- 16:58DANI: Like I understand she should have just said
- 17:01I don't want to go.
- 17:01KARA: Well she originally says no
- 17:03but then I think she's like wait I should go
- 17:05because it's not because I didn't get in, but
- 17:07because it's my mom.
- 17:07DANI: Yeah well yeah Regina says
- 17:11I would really like you there and then she's
- 17:13like, okay I will come. But Regina does sell it
- 17:17as like, you can get to know people in the art
- 17:20world. I don't know. I don't go to a lot of gallery
- 17:23openings these days, but it was like something
- 17:25I did in LA. And I never felt like, oh, this
- 17:29room is full of like art insiders.
- 17:29KARA: You never
- 17:32know.
- 17:32DANI: But Regina's literally like, this will
- 17:35be like a networking opportunity for you. And
- 17:37I'm like, okay, maybe just say.
- 17:37KARA: Just come for
- 17:41me, your mom.
- 17:41DANI: Yeah. So. Which is basically ultimately
- 17:44what works. Yeah.
- 17:44KARA: Melody is having a garage sale
- 17:47or at least trying to attempt to have a garage
- 17:50sale.
- 17:50DANI: I know, we never actually see her have a
- 17:52garage sale.
- 17:52KARA: Yeah. She's just like sticking posters.
- 17:55Yeah. And Daphne is there helping out. And Melody's
- 17:59like, well, I could use the money because I'm
- 18:02not going to be able to coach girls basketball
- 18:04next year because they are cutting the team due
- 18:07to budget constraints. Classic thing about deaf
- 18:10schools. And then Daphne is like, oh, that sucks.
- 18:13I'm an amazing player. I should have stayed and
- 18:16help you. And then we would get funded. But girl,
- 18:19you hated them.
- 18:19DANI: There was a really weird, they
- 18:22chose some weird close-up angles on Melody signing.
- 18:25KARA: I wrote this too.
- 18:25DANI: Because it's like head cut
- 18:29out of the frame, like, mid-chest down.
- 18:29KARA: And
- 18:32it zoomed in on her hands, but, like, from behind.
- 18:35It was very strange. It was really distracting.
- 18:37They did it, like, three times during that scene.
- 18:39DANI: Yeah, it was very... I wonder if, like, something
- 18:41happened with the footage, genuinely, that they
- 18:45had to do that weird of a crop.
- 18:45KARA: Oh, I just thought
- 18:47they were trying to be artsy and be like, look
- 18:48at this beautiful sign.
- 18:48DANI: It wasn't a scene that
- 18:51called for it.
- 18:51KARA: No, it was so strange.
- 18:51DANI: It was
- 18:54very random. Anyway, Toby's also in his garage.
- 18:57He's practicing and Wilke comes by.
- 18:57KARA: The song
- 19:01sounded like the intro to Party in the USA.
- 19:01DANI: Also,
- 19:03I expected there to be some bad blood between
- 19:07Toby and Wilke about the band.
- 19:07KARA: No.
- 19:07DANI: But there
- 19:10doesn't seem to be.
- 19:10KARA: No, they say, hey
- 19:13guys.
- 19:13DANI: Yeah, well, he doesn't really care. But
- 19:15what he does care about is that Toby's dating
- 19:17Simone and Simone is being a cunt to Daphne.
- 19:20And he says so. He says, hey, maybe tell her
- 19:23to lay off.
- 19:23KARA: Your sister.
- 19:23DANI: And Toby is so, yeah,
- 19:26your fucking sister. Toby's so rude. He says,
- 19:29you want to get involved in a girl fight? Like,
- 19:32should I get you a training bra? What the fuck?
- 19:35KARA: So mean. That is your sister.
- 19:35DANI: It also like comes
- 19:38out of left field. I feel like Toby's usually
- 19:40not like that.
- 19:40KARA: Yeah that was not cool of him.
- 19:40DANI: No
- 19:44and Wilke's just like okay fuck off man
- 19:48and then well then Toby gets a call from Simone.
- 19:50KARA: Like he's a servant.
- 19:50DANI: Who's like, yeah, it was odd
- 19:53the way it was framed though like why if you
- 19:56live at home with your parents and you're a teenager,
- 19:58why do you need your boyfriend to go to the store
- 20:00and pick up diet soda for you?
- 20:00KARA: I don't know. I
- 20:04think she was like we have dinner plans, can you
- 20:06go get the food?
- 20:06DANI: In which case, not to defend
- 20:09Simone, but that would be fine.
- 20:09KARA: Right, but the
- 20:13way the phone call, we don't hear the phone call.
- 20:15DANI: No, we just hear Toby be like, yes, honey.
- 20:15KARA: Yes,
- 20:18honey, I'm writing this all down as I'm not writing
- 20:20this all down. But it makes him sound like a
- 20:23servant.
- 20:23DANI: Yeah, whatever. Yeah, so Wilke's helping
- 20:26Daphne prepare for this schmoozy tour that they
- 20:30have to take the XS Rush guys on. I was just
- 20:33confused about this. It felt odd to me.
- 20:33KARA: Do you
- 20:37want to just do the storyline and wrap it up?
- 20:39DANI: Yeah, I do.
- 20:39KARA: Okay. So basically, she was like,
- 20:42I'm dreading this tour because one, I can't hear
- 20:45well. And Wilke's like, I got you. First of
- 20:48all, Wilke, you need to learn some sign now.
- 20:50This is the time.
- 20:50DANI: Yeah. Even before there, when
- 20:53he's telling her about the tour and he says the
- 20:56XS Rush guys and she's like, the what? And he
- 20:59goes, XS, right? Like he like makes an X with
- 21:02his arms.
- 21:02KARA: Instead of signing.
- 21:02DANI: I'm like, at least
- 21:05the alphabet.
- 21:05KARA: At least learn the alphabet.
- 21:05DANI: It'll
- 21:08take you two days.
- 21:08KARA: They're boyfriend-girlfriend
- 21:10now, right? Or at least, they're at least seeing
- 21:12each other.
- 21:12DANI: They're like dating, dating, yeah.
- 21:14KARA: Yeah. It's time to learn some signs.
- 21:14DANI: Yeah.
- 21:14KARA: But
- 21:18basically, I guess what they do is they take
- 21:21the boosters on the tour. Once a month sounds...
- 21:24DANI: Once a month is so often.
- 21:24KARA: So often.
- 21:24DANI: Like, what's
- 21:28changing in that amount of time? But also, I
- 21:31guess, so it's a bunch of old white men. Surprise.
- 21:33And some of the old white men are on the board
- 21:36of the school.
- 21:36KARA: And some are the boosters.
- 21:36DANI: But
- 21:41at the time watching it, the visual is just like
- 21:46these two teenagers in the high school at night.
- 21:50KARA: Yeah, it was so odd.
- 21:50DANI: Leading this group of old
- 21:51men around.
- 21:51KARA: In a basketball court being like,
- 21:54thanks to your money, we have these bouncy new
- 21:56basketball floors.
- 21:56DANI: Yeah, and there's like a
- 21:58snack spread on the basketball court.
- 21:58KARA: It's very
- 22:01strange.
- 22:01DANI: It just felt like, why would these guys
- 22:03want to spend their time doing this?
- 22:03KARA: On like
- 22:06a Tuesday night. It's very weird.
- 22:06DANI: It's very strange.
- 22:08KARA: But it also seemed like a presentation, really,
- 22:11to ask for money for the aquatic center.
- 22:11KARA: Yeah.
- 22:13And I noticed one of the guys looks at Daphne,
- 22:16hears her deaf accent and goes, are you here
- 22:18on scholarship?
- 22:18DANI: Yeah.
- 22:18KARA: Crazy. And then Daphne's
- 22:21like, no, I do my academics at Carlton, which.
- 22:24DANI: No, in fact, I brought money to this school because
- 22:28I'm deaf. She should have been like, actually.
- 22:30KARA: I got disability funding for you fuckers. Yeah.
- 22:33And speaking of Carlton, the greatest deaf school
- 22:36in the world, you should give your money to
- 22:38them, actually, because Buckner's fine.
- 22:38DANI: Okay,
- 22:41this was a really hard scene to watch, I'm going
- 22:43to be honest.
- 22:43KARA: I agree with her, not the time.
- 22:45DANI: Exactly. I was like, Daphne, you're so right.
- 22:48They should be sponsoring more schools. They
- 22:51should be giving money to schools that need it.
- 22:52That being said, this is so inappropriate, and
- 22:55I know that she-
- 22:55KARA: So inappropriate.
- 22:55DANI: Like, doesn't
- 22:58really understand, because she didn't grow up
- 23:00in rooms like, like, in contexts like this, but
- 23:03you cannot just fucking - ask for money. It's
- 23:06giving five dollar cupcakes, like you cannot just
- 23:09be like well yes now give your money to Carlton,
- 23:12a school with which you have, I'm sure half those
- 23:16guys from XS Rush fucking went to Buckner.
- 23:18KARA: That's my thing, I was like these people probably
- 23:20went to Buckner so they have the incentive or
- 23:23like they want to support the school that they
- 23:25went to like they have no ties to Carlton.
- 23:25DANI: Like
- 23:27yes, do I think that a rich energy drink company
- 23:31should be using their marketing money for good?
- 23:34Sure.
- 23:34KARA: But why would they?
- 23:34DANI: But like not only why
- 23:37would they but like you cannot just be like, and
- 23:40by the way you should be funding this other random
- 23:43school you know nothing about.
- 23:43KARA: Right.
- 23:43DANI: No one's
- 23:45going to respond positively to that.
- 23:45KARA: No and even
- 23:48Wilke tells Daphne beforehand like please
- 23:50do this tour, it's so important to me.
- 23:50DANI: Yeah, and
- 23:53she's not fucking listening to him.
- 23:53KARA: She is not
- 23:55listening. And the board is trying to steer the
- 23:57conversation away to, like, the basketball court.
- 23:59And she's like, but please give your money to
- 24:01Carlton. And it's uncomfortable to watch.
- 24:01DANI: She
- 24:04also is dressed like a 10-year-old again.
- 24:04KARA: I
- 24:06know. We'll get more into this when we get to,
- 24:10like, the Occupy Carlton thing. But it's just,
- 24:12like, the hints of that Carlton is struggling
- 24:16financially.
- 24:16DANI: Yes.
- 24:16KARA: So keep that in mind. But yeah,
- 24:21anyways, Wilke's like, shut up.
- 24:21DANI:MAfter the scene,
- 24:24they get in a big fight in like a dramatic, dark,
- 24:27lit hallway.
- 24:27KARA: At Buckner.
- 24:27DANI: It's really was reminding
- 24:31me of High School Musical 3 when Troy Bolton
- 24:34goes to the school and like has his dramatic
- 24:36singing scene.
- 24:36KARA: And when the hallway spins.
- 24:36DANI: When
- 24:39the hallway spins and there's like lightning
- 24:41outside, like it felt like that.
- 24:41KARA: That's beautiful.
- 24:44DANI: Yeah.
- 24:44KARA: What song was that?
- 24:44DANI: Oh my God.
- 24:44KARA: Scream?
- 24:47DANI: Yeah. You make me want to scream. Yeah. Thank
- 24:51you.
- 24:51KARA: Anyways, Wilke's like, so what was that?
- 24:54That was not cool. She's like, but you guys have
- 24:56everything. He was like, I understand, but that
- 24:58was not the place and time.
- 24:58DANI: Right. And then he
- 25:01was like, I really needed that to go well. And
- 25:03she goes, well, you should have told me that.
- 25:04He went, I did. Okay, Wilke, but maybe you should
- 25:08have signed it to her. Maybe she would have listened
- 25:09to that.
- 25:09KARA: Yeah.
- 25:09DANI: Just a thought.
- 25:09KARA: That's kind of
- 25:12the end of that plot.
- 25:12DANI: We don't get a resolution.
- 25:14KARA: She doesn't apologize. She doesn't...
- 25:14DANI: No, that's
- 25:17the last we see of Wilke in that episode.
- 25:17KARA: Now
- 25:19we're at the Kennish house, and Kathryn and
- 25:21John are talking with Craig Tebbe, the lawyer.
- 25:24And Kathryn's like, guys, we have to help Brizia.
- 25:27And Craig Tebbe is kind of like, we cannot help
- 25:30her financially as much as you want to. It's
- 25:33going to destroy the hospital lawsuit.
- 25:33DANI: What he
- 25:35does say that surprised me was he was like, well,
- 25:37it's not illegal.
- 25:37KARA: It's not illegal.
- 25:37DANI: I was surprised
- 25:41by that. I feel like it would be. But it's not,
- 25:43I guess, just frowned upon.
- 25:43KARA: It's not illegal
- 25:44to help, but it's just not going to help them
- 25:47with the lawsuit.
- 25:47DANI: No, definitely not.
- 25:47KARA: Now Regina's
- 25:50at Melody's garage.
- 25:50DANI: I'm not positive
- 25:53about this, but I think this may be the first
- 25:56scene where they are not simcomming.
- 25:56Kara: Simcomming.
- 25:59I wrote this too.
- 25:59DANI: And there's no rhyme or reason
- 26:02to it.
- 26:02KARA: Is it because Daphne speaks too? Is that
- 26:05why they simcom?
- 26:05DANI: No. There's no way. No, because
- 26:08we've seen them together before by themselves.
- 26:11Regina's still fucking yapping out loud.
- 26:11KARA: I know.
- 26:13DANI: But they're just like, they're not in the scene.
- 26:16It's beautiful.
- 26:16KARA: She and Melody are finally.
- 26:16DANI: Yeah.
- 26:18KARA: Not simcomming. She just basically asked Melody,
- 26:21like, how are things going with Emmett? And she
- 26:23was like, not great. He's kind of pushing me
- 26:24away.
- 26:24DANI: Yeah.
- 26:24KARA: So we'll see about that. But now
- 26:28we're at Cameron's house and Bay is telling Emmett
- 26:31about the art gallery showing and she's like
- 26:34can you join me? And he says of course. The first
- 26:36next thing he's done this episode.
- 26:36DANI: And then she
- 26:39what she asked him how was school and he said
- 26:41I didn't go.
- 26:41KARA: Yeah well he shows her stickers that
- 26:44he made.
- 26:44DANI: He made these little miniature stickers.
- 26:46KARA: So a couple episodes back when Bay showed the
- 26:49art on the projector it was like the two of them
- 26:51on a motorcycle
- 26:51DANI: Yeah.
- 26:51KARA: And Emmett-
- 26:51DANI: It's a cute piece.
- 26:54KARA: It's a very cute piece and Emmett turned those
- 26:56into stickers and Bay is like great. And he goes,
- 27:00I worked all day on these stickers. I'm really
- 27:02proud of them. And she goes, all day? And he
- 27:04goes, yeah, I didn't go to school. In fact, I'm
- 27:06gonna dropout. Who needs history and biology and
- 27:10trig? And Bay's like, right. But don't you
- 27:14need those to, like, graduate high school? And
- 27:16he goes, well, I can just get my GED.
- 27:16DANI: So this
- 27:18was a hard scene for me to watch.
- 27:18KARA: Okay. He wants
- 27:21to become a photographer.
- 27:21DANI: As someone who was
- 27:24homeschooled.
- 27:24KARA: Right.
- 27:24DANI: Like, my brother got his
- 27:26GED.
- 27:26KARA: Right.
- 27:26DANI: He did not go to high school and
- 27:30graduate high school. Most homeschoolers who
- 27:33didn't go to high school just got their GED.
- 27:35KARA: Yes, but it's quite different. It's what, like
- 27:38four tests or it's seven hours total. I googled
- 27:42it. It's like four tests through the course of
- 27:44seven hours instead of, you know, like four years
- 27:46of high school.
- 27:46DANI: I guess my point is I agree with
- 27:51a lot of what Emmett was saying, but then ultimately
- 27:53don't agree with that choice for Emmett.
- 27:53KARA: But
- 27:57I think you need math and biology.
- 27:57DANI: Well I think
- 28:01that people should go at least to community college.
- 28:04I just like don't think that high school, like
- 28:09I think he's right to be like if I want to be
- 28:11a photographer why do I need to be like stressing
- 28:13out about failing trig.
- 28:13KARA: Okay.
- 28:13DANI: Passing trig, whatever
- 28:16but then the problem is is that Emmett's not
- 28:19actually applying himself
- 28:22and then I also feel like Emmett's not a go-getter
- 28:26enough to do that path.
- 28:26KARA: Right.
- 28:26DANI: Like, I have a
- 28:29lot of friends who, like, were like, I'm going
- 28:32to discard all that stuff and then go to college
- 28:34and then went on to grad school and, like, are
- 28:37doing amazing, really specialized things that
- 28:39they care about.
- 28:39KARA: That's great. Do you think there's
- 28:41a stigma against people who have GEDs when they're
- 28:43applying for jobs, though?
- 28:43DANI: I don't know. I imagine
- 28:46yes, but I guess it also depends on the job.
- 28:51I don't know. I've reached a point in my adulthood
- 28:53where, like, no one fucking asks about my education.
- 28:56KARA: That's true I think also-
- 28:56DANI: I think it's a tough
- 28:59start for sure and especially if you are a deaf
- 29:02kid like I think why give yourself another thing.
- 29:06KARA: Another barrier.
- 29:06DANI: Yeah another thing that like
- 29:09you're gonna have to convince some random person
- 29:13to give you a job that already might be biased
- 29:15against you. That being said Bay is kind of like,
- 29:19it feels kind of classist, her response.
- 29:19KARA: It did.
- 29:21DANI: She's like, oh, you're going to get your GED
- 29:23and then...
- 29:23KARA: And then work at the grocery store.
- 29:26DANI: Yeah, work at the grocery store. Like, what's
- 29:28wrong with working at the grocery store? And
- 29:30then also, like, I don't know. I just was like,
- 29:32I wish that Bay had been more like, okay, let's
- 29:37talk through your plan.
- 29:37KARA: It's one thing to get
- 29:39your GED and then go to college or apply for
- 29:43a community college program where you can do
- 29:45photography. But it seems like he's like, I want
- 29:49to drop out. I'll get my GED whenever. And then
- 29:52I just go outside and take some pictures. It
- 29:54doesn't seem like he has...
- 29:54DANI: Exactly. Emmett's
- 29:56plan is not a good plan.
- 29:56KARA: No. And the way he's
- 29:59saying it, it's going to be as if Bay is going
- 30:01to be so nonchalant and chill about it.
- 30:01DANI: Yeah.
- 30:04KARA: Is he delusional?
- 30:04DANI: I mean, that's the thing about
- 30:07Bay is, like, she loves her, like, fucking street
- 30:10art. But then also, she's, like, not rebellious
- 30:14in any real way.
- 30:14KARA: No.
- 30:14DANI: Like, she's, like, very
- 30:16much, like, but the system says you have to
- 30:19go to school. I guess I'm just saying, like,
- 30:21it's hard for me as someone who's like, yeah,
- 30:23that is true. That is a valid option.
- 30:23KARA: Yeah, it
- 30:26is. But you have to have a plan.
- 30:26DANI: You have to,
- 30:29like, you have to commit to that being, like,
- 30:31your alternative life and have more of a plan.
- 30:34I don't know.
- 30:34KARA: And he doesn't have a plan. He's
- 30:36just, like, fuck trig, basically.
- 30:36DANI: Right. So.
- 30:39KARA: Yeah. And Bay's having a mini heart attack. And
- 30:42I would, too.
- 30:42DANI: Yeah. I mean, I think if your 16
- 30:44-year-old boyfriend's like. I've got no plan.
- 30:46I have a dad that doesn't give a fuck about me.
- 30:48KARA: I'm not eating and I'm drinking.
- 30:48DANI: Yeah, I don't
- 30:51have my motorcycle anymore and I'm going to be
- 30:53a photographer. And also, guys, Emmett's photography
- 30:55is bad. So that's an important line of context
- 30:59here.
- 30:59KARA: Yeah, which Bay doesn't say, but maybe
- 31:01she knows.
- 31:01DANI: Yeah, maybe she knows in her heart.
- 31:03I don't know. Also, like, why did it take him
- 31:06all day to make those stickers? All day.
- 31:06KARA: I was
- 31:08like, it doesn't take that long to make stickers.
- 31:10DANI: The print already existed.
- 31:10KARA: Right. He was like,
- 31:13I worked so hard to make sure they were centered.
- 31:15You did?
- 31:15DANI: Okay, dude. Skill issue.
- 31:15KARA: I bet he slept
- 31:18till like 2 p.m. and then made some stickers
- 31:21in an hour and then Bay came over after school.
- 31:24DANI: Yeah. Anyway, she kind of rolls back. She, like,
- 31:27pretends she's not freaked out. And Emmett's like,
- 31:29oh, good. For a second there, you sounded like
- 31:31my mom.
- 31:31KARA: And she's like, ha ha, okay.
- 31:31DANI: Don't fucking
- 31:33say that to your girlfriend. That's a weird thing
- 31:35to say. That's a mean thing to say.
- 31:35KARA: I know. Anyway.
- 31:39Next scene, we're at the Kennish house.
- 31:39DANI: Yeah,
- 31:41and Kathryn's like, don't mind me. I'm just
- 31:43taking stuff to that hazardous waste dump. Do
- 31:46we think...
- 31:46KARA: Queen of environmental protection,
- 31:48Dani.
- 31:48DANI: Okay, why... This was, like, felt like
- 31:51product placement. But they're not selling anything.
- 31:54KARA: I think they did a scene to show the car that
- 31:57they have.
- 31:57DANI: Right. That's it. That was its only
- 31:59purpose. And she's like, I'm doing my part by
- 32:01taking this stuff to the hazardous waste dump.
- 32:04And Bay goes, while you're there, you might as
- 32:06well leave the gas guzzling SUV. And Kathryn
- 32:09gets a little look in her eye. Like, I have an
- 32:11idea.
- 32:11KARA: Yeah. Bay's wearing a crazy blazer. It's
- 32:14like really pointy sleeves. Really pointy shoulders.
- 32:17DANI: Bay's outfits this entire episode really killed
- 32:19me.
- 32:19KARA: But then she's like, Mom, why didn't you call
- 32:22ICE on Angelo? And Kathryn goes, well, first
- 32:25of all, I'm not a snitch. And then I realized
- 32:27what he did is really none of her business. And
- 32:30also, fuck ICE. She didn't say that, but she
- 32:31was like...
- 32:31DANI: It was implied in her tone.
- 32:31KARA: Yeah.
- 32:34KARA: She said, it's none of her business, and I knew
- 32:35it would break your heart if he left. And also,
- 32:38fuck ICE. And Bay's like, okay, cool. I just
- 32:42want to know when it's appropriate to intervene
- 32:45in a situation, basically. And Kathryn, I think,
- 32:49smartly says, will the person get hurt if you
- 32:52don't interfere? And Bay's like, hmm, thinking,
- 32:55thinking.
- 32:55DANI: I think she should have gotten to Regina,
- 32:59not Melody, if she wanted to avoid giving Emmett
- 33:03that sense of betrayal.
- 33:03KARA: But it helps their relationship
- 33:05later on.
- 33:05DANI: Yeah, it does, obviously. But I just
- 33:08think, like, I think I would have told my mom
- 33:11and been like, and do with that what you will.
- 33:13KARA: Yeah, that's fair. I'm just glad she went to
- 33:15an adult.
- 33:15DANI: Yes. That was good of her.
- 33:15KARA: Yeah, it
- 33:19does. Yeah, you're right. Regina would have been
- 33:21a good person. Then Regina could have broken
- 33:22the news to Melody.
- 33:22DANI: Yeah, but honestly, Regina's
- 33:25so unreliable. Maybe she just would have been
- 33:27like, whatever.
- 33:27KARA: And she's too busy with her art
- 33:29show this episode. Next scene, Daphne comes to
- 33:32Cameron's house to see Emmett.
- 33:32DANI: Because apparently
- 33:35they're still studying for trig.
- 33:35KARA: And Emmett shows
- 33:38up and he's like, shit, forgot about that.
- 33:38DANI: Yeah.
- 33:40KARA: Anyways, wanna shoot some pictures?
- 33:40DANI: And
- 33:42Daphne's like, no, I gotta go. She's gotta go
- 33:45on that fancy tour.
- 33:45KARA: And then he doubles down.
- 33:47He's like, no, I'm going to take pictures.
- 33:47DANI: He's
- 33:50being rude to her.
- 33:50KARA: Yeah. And by the way, these
- 33:53pictures aren't even for yearbook because I'm
- 33:55quitting yearbook.
- 33:55DANI: Yeah, he says the light is
- 33:57perfect right now. What is he going to go take
- 33:59pictures of? The trees?
- 33:59KARA: I don't know.
- 33:59DANI: I'm just
- 34:02confused. I'm just confused about Emmett's like
- 34:04photography goals.
- 34:04KARA: He lives in a suburban area.
- 34:06DANI: Yeah.
- 34:06KARA: I don't know. There's art everywhere.
- 34:09DANI: I mean, I guess when I was 16, I was probably
- 34:11doing the same thing.
- 34:11KARA: There are cathedrals everywhere
- 34:13for those with the eyes to see. I get it. But
- 34:15like, I don't know. But Daphne's like, so why
- 34:19are you quitting yearbook? You're the best photographer
- 34:20they have. And then Emmett goes, well, you were
- 34:23the best basketball player Carlton had and you
- 34:25left. And she was like, so that's different.
- 34:27I actually still go to school.
- 34:27DANI: But he's like,
- 34:30we're not different. Carlton's no longer the
- 34:32center of our worlds, which is true.
- 34:32KARA: Yeah.
- 34:32DANI: But
- 34:36I don't know how good of a thing that is.
- 34:36KARA: Right.
- 34:40DANI: Like, I don't think that Daphne has been made
- 34:42better by her exposure to Buckner.
- 34:42KARA: No. Having
- 34:46a Deaf community is good for you guys.
- 34:46DANI: Yeah.
- 34:48KARA: Yeah. This is now when Bay goes to Melody in
- 34:52her pointy blazer. And she goes, Melody, I'm
- 34:55worried about Emmett. He's not eating right. And
- 34:57he has been missing a ton of school. I noticed
- 35:00she said the word missed, but then she signed
- 35:03skip. Interesting. But Melody must know he's
- 35:06been missing school. She's the school guidance
- 35:08counselor. Like, don't the students get flagged
- 35:11if they miss a certain amount? It seems like
- 35:13Melody kind of knows, which is interesting.
- 35:13DANI: I
- 35:16think she's maybe... I understand, like, Emmett's
- 35:19grown enough that maybe it's best to let him
- 35:23go on his, like, ridiculous spiral and then see
- 35:27the consequences of his actions versus saving
- 35:30him from them.
- 35:30KARA: Yeah. I don't know. But then Bay
- 35:33is like, he wants to drop out, but she doesn't
- 35:36know how to sign drop out. So she signs, leave
- 35:39forever. And then Melody was interesting. She
- 35:41was being very curt about it and goes, is that
- 35:43everything?
- 35:43DANI: Yeah, she was very stone-faced,
- 35:46the whole interaction.
- 35:46KARA: Yeah.
- 35:46DANI: But then she warms
- 35:49up to Bay a little bit later.
- 35:49KARA: I think because
- 35:51she realizes Bay shared this because she cares
- 35:53about Emmett, as does Melody, of course.
- 35:53DANI: And then
- 35:56back at Cameron's place, Emmett's trying to practice
- 35:58speech therapy. And he's having a tough time.
- 36:01So he takes not one shot, but two.
- 36:01KARA: I find, I
- 36:06don't know. I feel like being drunk and having
- 36:08slurred speech is not going to help your speech
- 36:11therapy practice.
- 36:11DANI: Definitely not.
- 36:11KARA: He also gets
- 36:13a text from Melody and deletes it. It's art show
- 36:15time.
- 36:15DANI: And I hate everyone's outfit. Except for
- 36:19Melody's. I think Melody's is fine.
- 36:19KARA: She had a
- 36:21nice brown dress.
- 36:21DANI: She looks hot in it. But everyone
- 36:23else looks terrible.
- 36:23KARA: Regina looks crazy.
- 36:23DANI: Regina
- 36:26looks so crazy. She's wearing, like, a...
- 36:26KARA: A fuchsia
- 36:29blouse. And then, like, a skin-tight gray miniskirt.
- 36:33DANI: I think it's one of those 2012 situations where
- 36:36it's actually a dress. And it's, like, a color
- 36:38-blocked.
- 36:38KARA: Oh, it's attached.
- 36:38DANI: A color-blocked,
- 36:39attached, business casual dress.
- 36:39KARA: Right.
- 36:39DANI: It's
- 36:44awful.
- 36:44DANI: It's so ugly. The gray is really bad.
- 36:47And then Bay is wearing like this bright red
- 36:50dress with like a like early 2000s prom-esque
- 36:55like gem thing on the front, like design on the
- 36:59front. And then this little ruffly shrug.
- 36:59KARA: Like
- 37:01a feathery ruffly cardigan.
- 37:01DANI: I don't hate the
- 37:04shrug, but paired with the dress is so awful.
- 37:08It's just like so terrible.
- 37:08KARA: I was thinking I
- 37:10like the dress, but I hated the cardigan.
- 37:10DANI: Okay,
- 37:13well, we can divide the outfit. We can share
- 37:15it that way.
- 37:15KARA: Okay. Bay is reluctantly the art
- 37:18show in her weird outfit.
- 37:18DANI: Such a brat.
- 37:18KARA: Arms crossed.
- 37:22DANI: So rude in public.
- 37:22KARA: And Melody kind of, like,
- 37:25ushers them away. And is like, go do your thing.
- 37:28Go network. I think because she wants to flirt
- 37:30with people.
- 37:30DANI: That's what I was going to say,
- 37:32too. I was like, I feel like her and the art
- 37:35gallery guy could really hit it off.
- 37:35KARA: I know.
- 37:38That's what I thought.
- 37:38DANI: But they don't interact
- 37:40in this episode. But maybe later. Maybe I'm remembering
- 37:42something that happens later. I don't know.
- 37:42KARA: Yeah,
- 37:44but Bay, like, stomps around the gallery, looks
- 37:47at it all angrily, and then she slaps a sticker,
- 37:50her sticker on one of the columns.
- 37:50DANI: This is so
- 37:53disrespectful, I think.
- 37:53KARA: Yeah.
- 37:53DANI: That's so fucking
- 37:57rude to do. Just because this guy didn't pick
- 38:00your art, a 16-year-old, for the gallery, like,
- 38:04I don't know. Like, this is really burning bridges.
- 38:07KARA: I know.
- 38:07DANI: Also, she already knows that he doesn't
- 38:10like...
- 38:10KARA: She also already put up art across the
- 38:13street from the gallery.
- 38:13DANI: Yeah.
- 38:13KARA: That he called,
- 38:15like, Banksy wannabe.
- 38:15DANI: And he hated that. And
- 38:19then there's a couple.
- 38:19KARA: Oh, my God. Do you see
- 38:21what the guy was wearing?
- 38:21DANI: The hat. There's a
- 38:24very 2012. It's a 2012 hipster couple. It literally
- 38:27looked like Jack Antonoff and Aubrey Plaza.
- 38:27KARA: Oh,
- 38:29my God. He's wearing, like, a fedora.
- 38:29DANI: Yeah.
- 38:29KARA: But
- 38:32pushed back on his head.
- 38:32DANI: Yeah.
- 38:32KARA: A
- 38:35plaid button-up. And a bow tie. And the two
- 38:37of them are looking at Regina's, Phoebe Bridgers
- 38:40Punisher piece. Regina is in the distance listening
- 38:44in on their conversation. And they're looking
- 38:48at the art and the woman is referencing like
- 38:51the art catalog about the show.
- 38:51DANI: Yeah.
- 38:51KARA: And she
- 38:53was like, oh, this is from the artist whose daughters
- 38:56were switched at birth. And you can really see
- 38:58the pain in the art.
- 38:58DANI: And like the blood, like
- 39:01see how the red represents bloodlines.
- 39:01KARA: And like
- 39:03birth or something. Which is not what the art
- 39:05is about. But whatever, art is up to interpretation.
- 39:08DANI: Okay, wait. A couple of things. Regina would
- 39:11have known about the switch at this point when
- 39:13she made this piece. She would have.
- 39:13KARA: But she
- 39:15said this was about her-
- 39:15DANI: She got sober after
- 39:17learning about the switch.
- 39:17KARA: Right.
- 39:17DANI: She said what
- 39:19she said. Do I think that maybe a little bit
- 39:22it could be about that?
- 39:22KARA: Sure, why not?
- 39:22DANI: Sure,
- 39:24why not? Second, that's a way better story than
- 39:28yeah, it's just some like broken glass from bottles
- 39:30because I'm an alcoholic. Like if you're talking
- 39:33about like having a unique story.
- 39:33KARA: And that's
- 39:35what Patrick says.
- 39:35DANI: Right. We were just like kind
- 39:38of hating on the fact that they were like, you're
- 39:40such a unique voice and this is such a unique
- 39:42piece. And we were like, okay, how many fucking
- 39:44alcoholic artists have used beer bottles in their
- 39:47pieces? Probably a lot.
- 39:47KARA: Yeah.
- 39:47DANI: But this specifically
- 39:50does make it really unique. I think she's just
- 39:53caught off guard about the fact that people know
- 39:55about the story. But I was like, girl, I don't
- 39:58know if I'd be mad.
- 39:58KARA: It's quite marketable.
- 39:58DANI: It's
- 40:00so marketable. I feel like that piece now could
- 40:03be put in a museum.
- 40:03KARA: For sure. Yeah, but basically
- 40:07Patrick put the switched at birth story in the
- 40:10art catalog about Regina without consulting her
- 40:12first.
- 40:12DANI: Yes, he writes like Regina Vasquez is
- 40:15like an artist in Kansas City, whatever. He just
- 40:18says a few months ago, Regina learned that her
- 40:20daughters were switched at birth.
- 40:20KARA: Not true, but
- 40:22yes.
- 40:22DANI: Right. Well, yeah, not true. Again, has
- 40:25it only been a few months since that fucking...
- 40:28Because he goes on to be like, I thought it wasn't
- 40:30a big deal because the paper literally covered
- 40:32it when it came out. If that was a few months
- 40:35ago...
- 40:35KARA: Guys, explain the timeline.
- 40:35DANI: Ugh. Anyway.
- 40:39KARA: Bay is looking at Regina's mask art. And this is
- 40:42where she notices this is not for sale. So I
- 40:46think that weird artsy couple bought the Phoebe
- 40:49Bridges Punisher piece one.
- 40:49DANI: Okay.
- 40:49KARA: At the same
- 40:52time, Emmett shows up to the gallery with Cameron
- 40:56and Olivia.
- 40:56DANI: This feels crazy of him. Do you think
- 40:58he invited them or do you think they were just
- 41:00like, and we're going to come too?
- 41:00KARA: I don't know.
- 41:02DANI: Like, this is fucked all around.
- 41:02KARA: My guess is
- 41:05he was telling them, I'm going to go to the art
- 41:08gallery for Regina because Bay is going to be
- 41:10there. And maybe Olivia was like, oh my God,
- 41:12I love art. We should all go.
- 41:12DANI: Maybe. It happened
- 41:15off screen. I don't know. But like, this was
- 41:18such a bad idea.
- 41:18KARA: Because Melody greets Emmett,
- 41:21gives him a hug and immediately smokes alcohol
- 41:23on his breath.
- 41:23DANI: Even before that, Olivia and Cameron
- 41:26and her are not on speaking terms, it seems.
- 41:28KARA: I know. Bad idea. They must have known Melody
- 41:31was going to be there. She's her best friend.
- 41:31DANI: Yeah.
- 41:33Yeah, but she's like, oh, you've been drinking.
- 41:36KARA: You're not texting me and you're drinking.
- 41:36DANI: And
- 41:38he's like, what? No, he's such a bad liar.
- 41:38KARA: Such
- 41:40a bad liar. And then she immediately, angrily,
- 41:44confronts Cameron.
- 41:44DANI: And they have a full-blown.
- 41:47KARA: Full-blown ASL fight. Love this fight. But Cameron
- 41:51goes whatever, he's a teenager, he's enjoying life.
- 41:55DANI: She says something about like this is why he
- 41:57shouldn't live with you.
- 41:57KARA: He needs boundaries
- 41:57DANI: He needs boundaries
- 42:00and he's like he likes living with me and she
- 42:02goes of course he does. You live in a frat house
- 42:04and he goes, it's better than living in army barracks.
- 42:06KARA: Oh my god.
- 42:06DANI: Cameron. Step up and be a dad challenge,
- 42:10please.
- 42:10KARA: At the same time, Regina's confronting
- 42:12Patrick about the pamphlet, saying that he used
- 42:15her in her story. But then Bay's interrupting,
- 42:17saying, sorry, guys, there's a Deaf fight happening.
- 42:19DANI: Honestly, I was waiting for that pretentious
- 42:22hipster couple to be like, wow, I love this pop
- 42:26-up art.
- 42:26KARA: It's a beautiful language.
- 42:26DANI: No, I was
- 42:28expecting for them to be like, this is part of
- 42:30the art exhibit. Like, this is an art piece.
- 42:33KARA: This is performance art.
- 42:33DANI: Yeah. I thought that
- 42:35they were going to be like, wow, performance
- 42:37art.
- 42:37KARA: That would be, that would have been so funny.
- 42:39Olivia stupidly joins this fight as if she has
- 42:42any say in the matter.
- 42:42DANI: Olivia also, before they
- 42:44start fighting, is like giving Melody evil eyes.
- 42:48KARA: Yeah.
- 42:48DANI: What are you doing, girl? Just stay out
- 42:50of it.
- 42:50KARA: You are 22 years old.
- 42:50DANI: This is not your
- 42:53place.
- 42:53KARA: And then she goes, Emmett is actually
- 42:56very mature for his age.
- 42:56DANI: And she's like, when
- 42:58I was his age, we know when you were his age.
- 43:01Shut up.
- 43:01KARA: But we know when you were his age.
- 43:01DANI: And
- 43:02Melody says, oh, what, like two years ago?
- 43:02KARA: Basically.
- 43:06Awesome. Burn. But then Regina's like, hey. This
- 43:09is my gallery show and what if we took this outside.
- 43:12Cameron attempts to like guide Melody outside.
- 43:15DANI: And she's like, don't touch me.
- 43:15KARA: Yeah. And like
- 43:17hits him on the shoulder. Love this.
- 43:17DANI: But Regina's
- 43:20like, please not here, guys.
- 43:20KARA: Yeah.
- 43:20DANI: Let's go.
- 43:22And then Melody's like, if I, because of my job
- 43:25at the school, like if you were any other parent,
- 43:28I would call CPS on you.
- 43:28KARA: Not mentioning that
- 43:31he also wants to drop out.
- 43:31DANI: Which she brings up.
- 43:34She says this is why he wants to drop out of
- 43:36school.
- 43:36KARA: And then Cameron's like, who's saying
- 43:38anything about dropping out?
- 43:38DANI: Yeah.
- 43:38KARA: But then Emmett
- 43:40is looking at this conversation, immediately
- 43:42turns to Bay. Because Bay must be the only person
- 43:46who's told about dropping out.
- 43:46DANI: Yeah.
- 43:46KARA: And Bay's
- 43:48like, oh, so that's the sign for dropout.
- 43:48DANI: Bay,
- 43:51you're in trouble, girl.
- 43:51KARA: I like that during the
- 43:53whole fight. She's like. What are they saying?
- 43:55Oh, drop out. Oh, yep. Okay. Oh, that's the sign.
- 43:58Melody says to Cameron, so he is moving back
- 44:01in with me tomorrow. Or else I'm fighting for full
- 44:04custody.
- 44:04DANI: Yeah.
- 44:04KARA: They break up this fight. The
- 44:06fight's done now. And then Bay tries to go up
- 44:09to Emmett and he's like-
- 44:09DANI: Cameron says, go ahead
- 44:11and fight for full custody. So now they're going
- 44:13to be in like a court battle.
- 44:13KARA: Poor Emmett.
- 44:13DANI: Poor
- 44:16Emmett. But he does need to be living with Melody.
- 44:19Cameron is not a safe parent for him.
- 44:19KARA: Not at
- 44:22all.
- 44:22DANI: Which is kind of crazy. You are married
- 44:24to someone for 16 years, at least. Or you're
- 44:27with someone, at least, for 16 years.
- 44:27KARA: Were you
- 44:29not involved in Emmett's childhood at all?
- 44:29DANI: Yeah,
- 44:31was he just, like, not... I don't know.
- 44:31KARA: Bay tries
- 44:33to talk to Emmett after the fight, and he's
- 44:35like, just don't.
- 44:35DANI: Yeah, he speaks. He says, just
- 44:38don't.
- 44:38KARA: He speaks, just don't. And then he signs.
- 44:40And he says, aren't you happy you heard me talk
- 44:42now?
- 44:42DANI: Like, I don't think that's... I know for
- 44:44Emmett, that's been, like, turmoil that he's
- 44:46been going through this whole episode. I don't
- 44:47feel like it is for Bay.
- 44:47KARA: No.
- 44:47DANI: Bay doesn't actually-
- 44:50KARA: I think Bay's learning fast.
- 44:50DANI: Yeah and also at
- 44:53this point like if he was like I don't want to
- 44:55do speech therapy, Bay would be like, yeah that's
- 44:56fine. She didn't really, I know he like felt pressure
- 45:00from her and it was present at the beginning
- 45:02of their relationship. But I don't feel like it's
- 45:04there anymore.
- 45:04KARA: Me neither. I feel like Bay now
- 45:06has like quite an understanding and respect for
- 45:09sign that she didn't prior.
- 45:09DANI: Yeah.
- 45:09KARA: So, like, he
- 45:12really doesn't need to be torturing himself.
- 45:14But also, he hates living with his dad.
- 45:14DANI: He hates
- 45:17it. What a mess.
- 45:17KARA: Now we're at the Kennish house.
- 45:19I think it's the next day. Bay's in the kitchen,
- 45:21and then Regina comes in to get some coffee.
- 45:24DANI: This is really sweet.
- 45:24KARA: I have thoughts on this.
- 45:26DANI: Oh, okay.
- 45:26KARA: Yeah. But Bay first asks Regina, have
- 45:29you heard from Melody? Because Emmett's not talking
- 45:32to me. And Regina's like, no, but I think you
- 45:34did the right thing. And then Bay asks about
- 45:37the mask art and says it wasn't for sale. And I
- 45:40noticed that the wings that were next to the
- 45:42mask were made of bay leaves. And she's getting
- 45:44emotional. And Regina goes, yeah, I know. I don't
- 45:47think Regina would have expressed any of this
- 45:50to Bay if Bay hadn't asked, which is what drives
- 45:53me crazy about this interaction. And then she's
- 45:55like, yeah, I made it when I first found out
- 45:58that your name was Bay. That's kind of it. I
- 46:00know it's supposed to be like this heartwarming
- 46:02scene.
- 46:02DANI: I don't know. It worked on me.
- 46:02KARA: It didn't
- 46:04to me because Regina's kind of like, I know.
- 46:07DANI: Yeah, she's pretty gruff about the whole thing,
- 46:09but I feel like the symbolism in the art meant
- 46:12a lot to Bay.
- 46:12KARA: It did.
- 46:12DANI: And so I don't feel like
- 46:15she needed to expound on it very much.
- 46:15KARA: I just
- 46:19felt like Bay needed to, like, pull this love.
- 46:22DANI: Yes.
- 46:22KARA: Expression of love out of Regina instead of
- 46:25just receiving it.
- 46:25DANI: Yeah, the two of them are
- 46:27pretty emotionally closed off with each other
- 46:29still.
- 46:29KARA: Yeah, it's just tough to watch for me,
- 46:32personally.
- 46:32DANI: It is tough.
- 46:32KARA: Next scene, Kathryn
- 46:35meets up with Brizia on the street and she gives
- 46:38Brizia an envelope full of cash on this busy
- 46:41street in Kansas City in broad daylight.
- 46:41DANI: And
- 46:44I wrote down, what did she sell? We're about
- 46:46to find out, guys.
- 46:46KARA: We are about to find out.
- 46:47DANI: But I was like, what the hell? Also, I was like,
- 46:49how much money? Because she pulls it out and
- 46:51there's like a couple, you see a couple hundred.
- 46:54But then when you find out what she sold. It
- 46:56definitely was a lot more than that.
- 46:56KARA: Regina and
- 46:58Patrick are now at the guest house.
- 46:58DANI: Patrick comes
- 47:01to bring her her commission check, I guess.
- 47:01KARA: For
- 47:04$500.
- 47:04DANI: For $500. I guess for the Punisher piece.
- 47:07I don't know what's going on.
- 47:07KARA: And she's confronting
- 47:10him about taking advantage of her switched at birth story.
- 47:13But then he's like, but this is how your art
- 47:15gets power and sells. Hands her the check. And
- 47:17then she's like, oh, that's right.
- 47:17DANI: She flips
- 47:19immediately. She's just like, OK. And then they're
- 47:21like going to go out on a second date. Also,
- 47:24she says she hates Indian food, which is a red
- 47:26flag.
- 47:26KARA: What is your problem? Also, India is a
- 47:29very large and diverse country.
- 47:29DANI: I'm sure you
- 47:31don't hate all Indian food.
- 47:31KARA: Yeah, not cool. But
- 47:34yeah, she's like, OK, I'm done. Now it's product
- 47:37placement time.
- 47:37DANI: That was crazy. Okay, so Kathryn
- 47:42pulls up in a Prius, right? Isn't it a Prius?
- 47:45It looked like a Toyota Camry.
- 47:45DANI: Okay.
- 47:45KARA: It was a
- 47:47Toyota.
- 47:47DANI: I'm kind of car blind, so it could be
- 47:50anything. It doesn't matter. It's a hybrid.
- 47:50KARA: She
- 47:52never says the word Toyota.
- 47:52DANI: No.
- 47:52KARA: But she's like-
- 47:55DANI: Well, that's not the sponsorship.
- 47:55KARA: No.
- 47:55DANI: She pulls
- 47:57up in this little gray car and she's sitting
- 48:00in it in the driveway. And John comes out. He's
- 48:02like, what the fuck? And she's like, look at
- 48:04this cute little car. And he's like, what did
- 48:07you get in an accident? She goes, no, I bought
- 48:09it. And then he's speechless. And she's like,
- 48:13look, you can even play.
- 48:13KARA: You can play Pandora
- 48:16Radio.
- 48:16DANI: You can play Pandora Radio. And there's
- 48:18like a full close up of the Pandora.
- 48:18KARA: And the
- 48:20Toyota logo in the car. And John's like, that's
- 48:24all well and good.
- 48:24DANI: What the fuck?
- 48:24KARA: Why? Why do
- 48:27we have a new Toyota Camry? And then she was
- 48:30like, so I sold our gas guzzling SUV, I bought
- 48:33the Toyota, and I gave Brizia the difference
- 48:35in cash. She did this all in a day?
- 48:35DANI: I guess so.
- 48:38I guess she just went to the dealer.
- 48:38KARA: Yeah, I
- 48:40guess.
- 48:40DANI: Okay, how much cash do we think that was?
- 48:43KARA: Several thousand.
- 48:43DANI: At least. It was a Mercedes.
- 48:47KARA: Oh, I thought it was a Jeep. Okay.
- 48:47DANI: It's like,
- 48:49no, it was a G-Wagon.
- 48:49KARA: Okay, sure. Okay, so how
- 48:52much would that be? I don't know how much cars
- 48:54cost.
- 48:54DANI: A G-Wagon's like $40,000.
- 48:54KARA: I was going
- 48:57to say $40,000. And then a Toyota. A Toyota
- 48:59Camry.
- 48:59DANI: Like, I feel like she maybe gave Brizia
- 49:01like $10,000 to $20,000.
- 49:01KARA: Yeah, that is so much
- 49:04money.
- 49:04DANI: That's so much money. Kind of slay,
- 49:05Kathryn. She said, ally, I'm going to help
- 49:07out.
- 49:07KARA: She said, I'm going to help people who actually
- 49:10need the money. Really not great for the lawsuit.
- 49:13Not great. Morally, so cool.
- 49:13DANI: Morally, awesome.
- 49:15That rocks. John is pissed. And I do think he
- 49:19has a right to be mad because earlier in the
- 49:22episode, she's basically asking Craig, like,
- 49:24is there any way I can give Brizia money? And
- 49:27he was like, no, because they're going to be
- 49:28watching your bank account. So any like any pulling
- 49:32out any money is going to raise flags. So then
- 49:35her response is to do this. But don't you think
- 49:38they're also going to be watching Brizia's bank
- 49:40account?
- 49:40KARA: But they gave her cash.
- 49:40DANI: Yeah, but she's
- 49:43not going to just keep it under her mattress.
- 49:46KARA: Maybe she is.
- 49:46DANI: Okay, maybe. I immediately was
- 49:49like, well, they're going to get found out because
- 49:51they're going to be like, why does Brizia now
- 49:52have $10,000?
- 49:52KARA: My guess was that, are they not
- 49:56going to see that she sold her car? I guess because
- 49:58she did everything in cash.
- 49:58DANI: I'm just going to
- 50:01be like, yeah, I sold my car. That's not a crime.
- 50:04Like, I wanted a more efficient vehicle.
- 50:04KARA: I wanted
- 50:06Pandora Radio.
- 50:06DANI: Yeah, I needed Pandora Radio.
- 50:10KARA: Yeah, I don't know. I think it would work, honestly,
- 50:13if Brizia just keeps the cash and doesn't put
- 50:15it in her bank account.
- 50:15DANI: I just feel like I would never keep that much
- 50:20cash not in a bank account.
- 50:20KARA: A lot of people do
- 50:22though.
- 50:22DANI: Anyway.
- 50:22KARA: But yeah, basically Kathryn's
- 50:25like I just want everyone to be happy.
- 50:25DANI: Yeah.
- 50:25KARA: And
- 50:27that's really her character. She really does that
- 50:29a lot. She's like why- I can't believe things aren't
- 50:32fair. They should be.
- 50:32DANI: She's so mad. I like that
- 50:35John is like I can't talk about this right now
- 50:38and walks off and then comes back and is like,
- 50:39and another thing.
- 50:39KARA: He's pretty mad. Yeah. Daphne
- 50:42is at basketball practice and the coach confronts
- 50:45her about the tour and he's like so what was
- 50:48that about? I guess the boosters ratted on her
- 50:50and was like this weird girl kept promoting the
- 50:53deaf school. Cut to the next scene Daphne immediately
- 50:56goes to John and Melody at Carlton. The two of
- 50:59them are like planning basketball plays and she
- 51:02says let's save this team, guys.
- 51:02DANI: Her like striding
- 51:06in. She was like I'm gonna save the day.
- 51:06KARA: I'm the
- 51:09best player ever. Annoying. The three of them basically
- 51:12did, like, the jump in the air and the freeze
- 51:14frame.
- 51:14DANI: Yeah. Okay. And then Bay shows up to Carlton.
- 51:17God, everyone's going to Carlton this episode.
- 51:20KARA: Yeah.
- 51:20DANI: She's wearing a zipped Buckner sweater.
- 51:24Like, it's like a cardigan, but instead of buttons,
- 51:27it's a zipper. And it has, like, lace sewn down
- 51:31the front.
- 51:31KARA: I did see this.
- 51:31DANI: And the Carlton crest.
- 51:33And then, not Carlton, sorry, Buckner.
- 51:33KARA: Yes.
- 51:33DANI: A
- 51:36Buckner crest. And then she's wearing a Buckner.
- 51:40hoodie the same exact color that's also like
- 51:43a zipper thing pulled over it.
- 51:43KARA: It's cold out.
- 51:46DANI: It's actually, it is because you can see Emmett's
- 51:48breath in this scene which is crazy. They must
- 51:50have been filming so early in the morning because
- 51:52that never happens in LA.
- 51:52KARA: Oh sure.
- 51:52DANI: Anyway the zipper
- 51:54on zipper, I just couldn't, I couldn't do it. And
- 51:57then she's also wearing these like folded down
- 51:59booties.
- 51:59KARA: Okay. Nice. I didn't notice any of this.
- 52:03I love this. I did notice the Buckner crest because
- 52:07Again, Buckner has a huge fashion line. She goes
- 52:09to see Emmett at school and she's like, lovely
- 52:11seeing you here. And he goes, what, you're going
- 52:13to tell my mom?
- 52:13DANI: He's so salty.
- 52:13KARA: I know. And then
- 52:16she goes, so I care about you and I love you.
- 52:19And I thought you were in trouble. And Emmett
- 52:21like angrily yells, I'm happy. Everything is
- 52:24fine.
- 52:24DANI: Are you though?
- 52:24KARA: I am so sick of his behavior.
- 52:28I know he's supposed to be a cranky, surly teenage
- 52:30boy. I am sick of it.
- 52:30DANI: I just feel like, what
- 52:34does he want from people? I don't know.
- 52:34KARA: Yeah.
- 52:37DANI: I feel not, this isn't Bay's fault at all. It's
- 52:40not Bay's fault.
- 52:40KARA: No.
- 52:40DANI: But I feel like in the alternate
- 52:43timeline where him and Daphne started dating,
- 52:45none of this happens.
- 52:45KARA: You might be right.
- 52:45DANI: Like,
- 52:48I think all of this is happening because he's,
- 52:50like, expanded his world and is suddenly lost
- 52:53in it.
- 52:53KARA: That's true. He wouldn't have moved to
- 52:56Cameron's if he didn't have to sell his motorcycle.
- 52:58DANI: Yeah.
- 52:58KARA: If he wasn't arrested for doing the street
- 53:01art.
- 53:01DANI: Well, yeah. And just like he was trying
- 53:03to flee his mom's bad feelings about his relationship.
- 53:08But then he's turned around and is like poisoning
- 53:10his relationship.
- 53:10KARA: I know. It's awful. That's
- 53:13the end of the episode. He just like angrily
- 53:15walks away.
- 53:15DANI: He just says basically like, fuck
- 53:17you, bye, and leaves.
- 53:17KARA: And then credits roll.
- 53:19I think the one thing I liked about the episode
- 53:22was kind of like the conversion of the emotional
- 53:24arcs with Bay and Melody.
- 53:24DANI: Yeah, them being on
- 53:27kind of the same side for once.
- 53:27KARA: I know. That
